s much as I try to practice mindfulness and remind myself of all the things in my life I am grateful for, there are always days when I slip up and fall into a bit of a funk. It’s tough not to dwell on the negative sometimes. And then I meet someone who has gone through something truly heartbreaking, and my problems seem a lot less heavy. That was definitely the case with our cover stars, Camilo Villegas and Maria Ochoa. The pro golfer and his wife lost their precious daughter, Mia, when she was just 22 months old. Unimaginable. But together, they got through it. Not only that, but they managed to turn the tragedy into a positive for others, creating the Mia’s Miracles Foundation to help families going through similar crises. When I was at their home in March to shoot the cover, I was so in awe of their spirit. Maria’s mom and sisters were in town visiting from Colombia, and the whole family exuded so much joy and peacefulness. I’m so happy the couple was blessed with new baby Mateo this past December. And I wish them all the wonder in the world. Turn to page 34 to learn more about their lives and what’s new with their foundation. We do all have our own tribulations, though, and finding ways to get through those moments of difficulty is key to staying healthy. And these days, there are so many new methods of dealing with stress and anxiety—like utilizing animals as “therapists” and getting your body aligned with the vibration of the universe through sound healing. To learn about these alternative stress relievers and more, turn to page 48. Our annual Wellness Issue also includes stories on a local woman who, inspired by her husband who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, started a foundation that promotes a multidisciplinary approach to combating neurodegenerative disease (page 24); using gardening to nurture your soul (page 26); and much more. I hope these features impact your personal wellness positively in some way. Cheers to vibrating higher!

elcome to the May/June issue of Jupiter Magazine, our annual Wellness Issue. I look forward to relaxing and reading everything our editorial team has put together! We all have our own definition of what health is. What comes to your mind? While I was gathering my thoughts for this letter, I asked myself the same question. And for me, laughter and surrounding myself with good people are the first things that came to mind. My husband and I are grateful for our friends and for the activities we are able to do living in South Florida. As I’ve mentioned in previous letters, playing golf and tennis, riding bikes, taking long walks, and enjoying the water are some of our favorite ways to stay active and calm. So while a lot of people may say, “Health is wealth,” I believe happiness is key—especially when it comes to mental health. That’s why I chose to title my letter “health and happiness.” To me, these two words go hand in hand. The second thought I had was balance. My life is especially busy during season, and I have learned that saying no and slowing down at times is okay. Finding a balance between work, family, friends, and me time can be a challenge, but my body usually lets me know what’s appropriate and when. Like today, I decided to sit in my home office on a Sunday to catch up on some work. I was supposed to be at my tennis clinic, but instead I chose to have some quiet time and get a jump on the week ahead. Sometimes, we must do what is best for our body and mind to stay healthy. I also thought about my work life and how grateful I am to be publisher of Jupiter Magazine and part of such a wonderful community. It has been said that one of our greatest assets is the ability to generate income. But we must also be mentally and spirtually fulfilled to feel healthy. Over the past three months, I’ve attended and supported around a dozen charity events. (The photos below showcase some of these moments.) There are so many wonderful organizations in our area to support, and doing so fulfills me spiritually. I hope you enjoy the articles inside—and don’t forget to check out two special promotional sections, our luxury homes real estate guide and medical profiles of some local doctors in our area. Thank you for your readership of Jupiter Magazine, and I look forward to continuing to support our local community and businesses. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime!

IT’S HERE! SEE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CLUB! A LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP

32 YEARS AGO, JACQUELINE NUNEZ LEFT MEDELLIN, Colombia with $200 and her heart set on seizing the American Dream. Jackie was a dreamer through and through—characterized by her passion for independence, positive outlook, and gifted with the capacity to transform the ordinary to the extraordinary. Doubters and those who misjudged her did so at their own peril.

WWII Veteran Franklin Simon Still Has His Drive ROCK

Jackie and her husband, Dr. Rafael Nunez, understood that sacrifices would be necessary. Leaving behind her birthplace and the comforts of home was no small undertaking. However, their combined optimism and endurance against any adversity carried them through, as she worked long shifts and he studied for hours on end to pass his Medical Board exam.

THIS WAY

SCALING THE SUMMIT

DINOSAURS, COMPLIMENTARY WINE AND BEER, mini golf, and the iconic sounds from one of the most celebrated rock bands in history—what more could any Club Braman member of any age ask for?

In the valleys between the peaks, Jackie would privately entertain her own second thoughts, but the realities of Colombia during the 1990s went a long way in assuring her of their decision. She was immensely proud of her heritage, but her heart broke for the turmoil rollicking her home country and its citizens. Her beloved homeland faced an uncertain future; which inspired Jackie to redouble her commitment to bettering hers in the U.S.

Under the waning February sunlight, the Cox Science Center and Aquarium at Dreher Park remained open, exclusively for Club Braman members and their families. Entering past two burnished BMWs, visitors were greeted not by the typical bustle surrounding the exhibits, but by a tranquil atmosphere that nonetheless belied what was to come. Those of age followed the signs to the open bar, while the young and young at heart headed straight to the mini golf course and interactive science exhibits framing the Cox Amphitheater.

This innate drive moved Jackie to take a leap of faith: in 2000, she and her husband invested all of their savings into their first Palm Beach County medical practice, Soma Medical Center, P.A. Initially, they were short on cash, but long in faith. Taking full advantage of the freedom offered by her adopted home country, Jackie and her husband’s primary care, internal medicine, and pediatric practice would soon grow beyond their dreams.

or adventure seekers and longtime friends Cole McIlvaine and Will Dimaio, who love the surf and sand, a rainy summer day in 2020 could have meant endless hours of boredom. Instead, while the bad weather raged outside (and the pandemic was in full force), the local teens hatched a business inside Dimaio’s family garage. “We were scrolling on TikTok and saw this guy making a skimboard,” recalls North Palm Beach resident Dimaio, 18. “We figured we had nothing else to do, so why not?” They headed to Lowe’s, picked up plywood, epoxy, glue, and brushes, and got to work. “We had never used tools before,” Dimaio says with a laugh. a quick tutorial from Dimaio’s dad on the use of power tools, they spent the day sawing, sanding, and sculpting their first board. On a whim, McIlvaine grabbed a piece of charcoal from the Dimaios’ outdoor grill and sketched a few letters on the board. “When we finished and looked at the board, we thought it looked kind of primitive,” says McIlvaine, 18, who lives in Tequesta. “So we named the board ‘Caveman.’” In August 2020, they officially launched the namesake Caveman Board Company. Today, Caveman has expanded to sell not only skimboards but also skateboard decks and branded apparel via the company website (cavemanboard.com), and Dimaio and McIlvaine have sold their boards to customers as far away as New Zealand and Australia. But their business plans don’t end there—the duo, who have been best friends since the seventh grade, are looking to expand into local surf shops and also plan to design Caveman NFTs (non-fungible tokens). Their goal is to introduce at least 25-30 NFTs this year, and buyers of these one-of-a-kind digital art pieces will receive future discounts on Caveman products. At work on a They are also constantly crafting new skimboard and improved skimboards. “We’ve been experimenting with different kinds of wood and focusing on making the boards as light as possible,” says McIlvaine. Their boards—which range in price from $65 to $100—are made with natural wood, and the business partners are keen on helping the environment. “For every product sold, we plant a tree through One Tree Planted (onetreeplanted.org),” says McIlvaine. “I love the idea of giving back.”

f you haven’t yet played, you’ve at least likely heard about pickleball. The sport—which is like a cross between tennis, Ping-Pong, and badminton—is quickly taking over as one of the most-played games in the area. Just ask Huy Nguyen, head pickleball pro at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis & Pickleball Center. He teaches the sport at the city’s newly expanded center and has seen increasing numbers of people gravitating toward it, especially tennis players. “More and more tennis players are starting to play pickleball because it’s easy to pick up games,” he says. Pickleball first came on the sports scene in 1965. In 1984, the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA) was formed and today boasts a membership of more than 53,000 players. Nguyen explains the basics of the game: Like tennis, you hit a ball over a net, serve from the baseline, and play either singles or doubles. Unlike tennis, however, pickleball is played with a solid wood or composite paddle (shaped like a PingPong paddle but bigger) and a plastic ball with holes in it. Scoring is in increments of single points. Aside from tennis players, Nguyen says the pickleball trend is being driven by local seniors who are choosing a more active lifestyle. And that is trickling down to younger generations. “A number of young people see their parents or grandparents play and become interested in playing themselves,” he says. —Valerie Staggs

Trying to find the perfect gift, stressing over how to get the kids involved, and wondering if Mom needs yet another “I Love Mom” mug... But you don’t have to worry this year because I’ve sourced a few unisex gifts that both parents will love. Let’s start with an experience. For me, the best gift is spending time with my kids. So I thought, what would get my child to hang out with my husband and me? A movie night! Convincing everyone will be easy when they see these super cool popcorn spices from Dellcove. Buy plain corn and have a taste-test party to sample all the spices. Then serve it in these chic popcorn bowls by Crate & Barrel, which are a great gift for Mom or Dad. Another experiential gift is taking your parents for a custom hat fitting. Kai Lassen makes gorgeous hats and just opened a new showroom in town on East Indiantown Road (you can also order online). You may not be able to spring for a hotel getaway, but you can bring the vibe of an escape to your parents with Lindsay Silberman’s new Hotel Lobby line of candles. The scents—like Island, Linen, and Miami—are reminiscent of swanky hotels and are totally relaxing. If you are looking for a more out-of-the-box gift, how about a mirror? Not just any mirror though—I’m talking about Mirrors by Lina. Made from disco balls, these are more like works of art. A custom book is another thoughtful gift idea. I love the Wonderbly books, which let you create your own unique, personal story. I’ve created so many of them for my family. Lastly, you can never go wrong with food, and I have the perfect suggestion: a Perfect Bar. These are an all-time favorite for a reason. They’re good for you, organic, and taste amazing. nutritional counseling, support groups, and much more to community residents living with neurodegenerative disease. Elgort’s husband, Steve, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 11 years ago and is the inspiration behind the foundation. The couple moved away from New York to start a healthy lifestyle journey in Palm Beach Gardens, hoping to delay the progression of his Parkinson’s. Elgort says the goal of moving south was to find

the best resources and specialists to help her husband thrive. The search eventually motivated her to start her own organization. “The social worker in me wanted to help not only my husband but also other people living with neurodegenerative disease,” she says. Launched in February 2020, Mind, Music, and Movement initially offered only virtual programming because of the pandemic, but Elgort has since found a new home for the organization at Tropical Sands Christian Church in Palm Beach Gardens. The foundation’s programs have grown to include The Voices of Parkinson’s Chorus, which focuses on voice and facial muscles to improve confidence, volume, diction, and breath; Dance for Fluidity, designed to promote a creative, mind-body connection that can help delay the progression of neurodegenerative disease; and yoga and movement classes to help with balance, strength, core, stability, flexibility, and breathing. “We believe in taking a multidisciplinary approach to helping [families who are living with] neurodegenerative disease,” says

Our approach addresses the whole person, including physical and mental well-being.” Program offerings are also available for caregivers, seniors, and others in the community who are interested in increasing their mobility, promoting their health, or just looking to expand their support system and friendship with peers. “Socialization and mental health are critical to the senior population and for those caring for someone too,” says Elgort. “Our classes for caregivers and spouses are free. I honestly feel that our program is for everyone.” Many locals utilize the programs onsite regularly, while others throughout the country join virtually. Elgort’s future plans include offering comprehensive, integrative programs that will bring together local physicians, social workers, health professionals, fitness specialists, and other experts to enhance the lives of those living with neurodegenerative disease. “I hope it keeps building,” she says. “The love, nurturing, and laughter that occurs on a daily basis through Mind, Music, and Movement is beautiful to see. True GROWTH How the simple act of tending to plants helps us stay mindful while healing from the inside out by ABIGAIL DUFFY

BUTTERFLY GARDEN

Pinder’s tips for creating a blissful space for nature’s fluttering beauties

• Choose a sunny spot • Plant flowers like milkweed to feed Monarch caterpillars

• Plant penta and salvia to attract butterflies of all sizes • If planting indoors, plants in the pothos

family (philodendron, thaumatophyllum, epipremnum aureum) are resilient and forgiving. Vining plants are vigorous and grow roots from their internodes, so if you mess up, you can always salvage pieces and start again.

“F

lowers to the people” is more than a motto at Pinder’s Nursery, which has served the green thumbs of Palm City since 1975. It’s a promise to empower the community through nurturing gardens (both indoors and outdoors) and helping people discover mindfulness in tending to plants. Terri Pinder, founder of The Community Garden Center at the nursery, helps gardeners of all skill levels understand how plants can help them create a profound connection to themselves, to other gardeners, and to previous generations. Here, she discusses the wellness benefits of plant parenting and how to get started on your own plant therapy journey. pindersnursery.com

How does taking care of plants contribute to overall wellness? Plunging your hands into the earth has spiritual, psychological, and physical benefits. Science says that the microbes that live in rich, fertile earth create a warmth that you can feel at the center of it. When you pull your hands out, those microbes are aerosolized. You breathe them in, and they feed your own microbiome, which enhances the production of serotonin and melatonin—two neurotransmitters essential to calmness, restorative sleep, and general healing. The garden provides a direct path to that. Can you explain how tending to plants relates to mindfulness? Gardening reminds us of a quality of mindfulness called equanimity (mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper).

Clockwise from top: Philodendron verrucosum houseplant; Terri Pinder; once you have chosen a spot for your garden, Pinder says to pay attention to how you experience that space.

It’s when we are okay with the way things are. Being in the garden means accepting what’s happening right now. It all comes down to choice, and when you make a choice, you see immediate and unclouded responses from that plant. Any advice for beginners? I think you always begin with the end in mind and ask yourself what you want to gain from your garden. I usually advise people to start small, with a container or a pot. Pay attention to what the plant experiences and then adjust. Paying attention helps you recognize patterns, and those patterns are so reassuring. They take us back to the seasons and the predictable things, offering a sense of security. When you’re picking a space for your garden, in addition to being small, make the expectation realistic. Plants need water, light, soil to stabilize them, and nutrients, so choose a place that can provide the basics. Once you find a spot that suits what you want to accomplish, notice how you experience that space. This is where the intentionality and mindfulness begin—choosing a place that supports your success. ❖

Later, a basketball scholarship to The University of Tampa would offer the time to reinforce his passion and expose him to broader horizons as an angler. A longing to retire and spend more time near his true source of happiness—the waters of South Florida—led Cohen to one day find himself admiring an unfamiliar bay boat on Florida’s Gulf Coast during a tarpon outing. He eventually discovered the identity, a Morada 24, and knew he had to have one. After a trip to Stuart to tour the Islamorada Boatworks factory, Cohen and his wife, Kathi, not only pulled the trigger on a new Morada 24,

n March 2020, the COVID outbreak was about the furthest thing from Maria Ochoa’s mind. She and her husband, professional golfer Camilo Villegas, were too busy worrying about their 17-month-old daughter, Mia, who had gone from being a “very active little monkey” to tired and unwilling to eat. Doctors thought Mia could have been teething or struggling with some type of virus. But when the child started grabbing her head one sleepless night, her parents knew it had to be something more. “I called a family friend of ours in Colombia who is a pediatrician, and he told me I needed to take Mia to a neurologist,” recalls Ochoa. Ochoa and Villegas had already been through so much life together. The Jupiter residents had known each other since they were both 12 years old living in their hometown

of Medellín, Colombia. “We were always close growing up but never dated, even though I always thought she was pretty and interesting,” says Villega. “We always had a lot in common and would see each other a lot because we had many of the same friends.” Opportunity—golf for him, nonprofit work for her—would eventually bring both of them to the United States, at separate

36

times. Villegas moved to the States to attend the University of Florida and launched his professional golf career in 2004; Ochoa was in law school in Colombia at the time. Both had recently gone through breakups, and they decided the timing was right to start dating, even though it would be long distance at first. In 2008, Ochoa moved to Miami to work with the nonprofit Give to Colombia, while Villegas was quickly becoming a force on the PGA Tour. By 2014, he had won four Tour championships, including The Honda Classic at PGA National in 2010. The couple moved in together in Jupiter in 2012, and one night, as the sun began to set, Villegas proposed to Ochoa on a paddleboard. They married in 2014 and, both from close-knit families, they were excited to have children. But Ochoa struggled to get pregnant for three years before Mia was born in 2018. Now the new parents were facing the terrifying unknowns about their child side by side. Villegas called friend and fellow golfer Jack Nicklaus and told him of their plight. Nicklaus—whose own daughter, Nan, had a bout with pneumonia in her youth that inspired his lifelong commitment to children’s health care, most notably through the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation— immediately empathized. He arranged for Mia to be seen at his namesake hospital in Miami right away. The family arrived in Miami on March 14, and one day later, Mia was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer. “That whole time

in the hospital, Maria was unbelievable,” says Villegas. “I probably cried in the hospital more than she did.” Ochoa says she drew strength from her faith as well as self-care. “The doctors told me I had to take care of myself too,” she says. “So when I could, I would come up to our home in Jupiter for a day to walk on the beach and recharge. I made sure I had those healing moments for myself as I tried to trust the process and the universe.” Tragically, Mia succumbed to her illness and passed away in the hospital that July. Ochoa and Villegas were utterly devasted. “There are no words that will ever describe or do justice to what we went through and what other families go through,” says Ochoa. At the height of their grief, the couple found purpose. They decided to turn Villegas’ charitable foundation into Mia’s Miracles, which supports children and families in

Florida and Colombia who are enduring similar medical struggles. “Under the circumstances, we were very blessed,” says Ochoa, who serves as the foundation’s president. “Yes, Mia had a tough diagnosis. But we had all the support and financial resources so we could be there for her 24/7. Not all families are as fortunate as we are, and I want to do everything in my power to help them.”

38

During hard times, Ochoa knows how crucial it is to bring a smile to a child’s face or relief to a family in pain. Working with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, she says Mia’s Miracles identifies and “adopts” families that could benefit from financial assistance to pay for things not covered by insurance, such as rent, groceries, and therapies. The foundation also has a fund that covers more specific emergencies. “The Christmas before last, there was a young patient at Nicklaus who was alone for four months getting treatment because the family in El Salvador couldn’t afford to be there too,” Ochoa says. “So we got the mom a visa so she could come here. We do so many different things like this for families, from burial services to activities for kids to self-care baskets for moms with babies in NICU units.” In 2021, the couple gave back to the doctors and nurses at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital who did everything they could for Mia. Through the foundation, they created two areas called Mia’s Serenity Space for Staff—one in the oncology unit and the other in the pediatric ICU—where employees can go to take a moment for themselves and recharge. And this year, Mia’s Miracles will be donating a NICU unit to a hospital in Colombia. “It’s an amazing hospital, but they don’t have enough capacity,” Ochoa says. “Every month, they have to turn away 50 babies, and those babies don’t make it. This will change that.”

As the couple poured their hearts into the foundation and tried to heal from their loss, Ochoa began wondering whether she could have another child and, if so, whether it would be healthy. At the same time, she also didn’t want to rush the grieving process. She wanted to be certain she was ready and able to give a newborn the same love and attention she gave to Mia. “Maria was hesitant [to try again], which was understandable,” says Villegas. “There was a mental battle, and some mixed feelings to overcome.” Last year, their miracle arrived. Ochoa found out she was pregnant in March 2021 and gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Mateo, in December. “It’s kind of funny because Mia was born at 7:56 p.m., and Mateo was born at 7:56 a.m.,” Ochoa says. “When they told me the time of birth, I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I believe Mia sends me little messages from time to time, and this was one of them. So I knew everything was going to be okay.” The couple misses Mia every second of the day, but they are enjoying life with Mateo, whom Ochoa describes as “beautiful, peaceful, and calm.” She loves the serenity that comes with living near the water and time spent with her little boy. Meanwhile, Villegas has been doing what he does best, logging 13 appearances around the world thus far on the 2021-2022 PGA Tour (as of press time in April). When he’s not away playing tournaments, he relishes relaxing at home with his wife and son and enjoying sunsets with them from their backyard overlooking the Loxahatchee River. “Maria probably wishes we would travel more, but when I’m home, I want to be home,” he says. Life is beautiful for the loving family—but still, it’s bittersweet. “It’s hard to put it into words,” Ochoa says. “I am so happy and feeling such joy for this tiny being who is so cute. But there’s not one second of my day that I’m not thinking of Mia. At the same time, I have learned to experience joy regardless of not having her with us.” The trick, perhaps, is to live as though Mia is still with them, at least in spirit. “Mateo has brought smiles to this family,” Villegas says. “And we find ways to talk to him about his sister. We talk about her all the time, about how she’s looking down from heaven and being with us.” Mia will always be a part of their family, and her parents will continue to make miracles in her name. mias-miracles.org ❖

ounging around the edges of a ballet studio one evening, nine teenage students await their turn to perform. Some chat in hushed tones, while others gently stretch. Suddenly, the score of Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella soars from the sound system and all eyes turn to 17-year-old Devon Luxton as he leaps into the center of the room to rehearse his upcoming role as Prince Charming. A moment later, he is joined by 16-year-old Raelin Flanigan, who is dancing as Cinderella, and the two perform a complicated pas de deux with the encouragement of director Jean-Hugues Feray. “Don’t over-attack,” Feray instructs after one hard landing. “Go easy.” He peppers his advice with praise, using the words “good” and “nice” frequently as he analyzes each movement.

When Luxton and Flanigan finish, the next dancer immediately steps to the center of the floor. To say these dancers’ schedules are disciplined is an understatement. Many of the teens start their day at 6:30 a.m. and head straight to the studio after a full day of high school classes. But the payoff is huge. On May 15, these dancers—all students at the Paris Ballet and Dance school in Jupiter, which was founded by Feray—will take to the main stage at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts to showcase Feray’s choreographed

version of the classic Cinderella. The show will be followed by a guest performance featuring two renowned principal dancers: Brooklyn Mack, who has performed with the American Ballet Theatre, and Nicole Graniero of The Washington Ballet. They will be dancing a pas de deux from Marius Petipa’s Le Corsaire. Many of the dancers who study with Feray have essentially grown up with him. “Most of these kids have been with me since they were 4 or 5 years old,” he says. “They’re like my own kids.” The admiration is mutual. As the teens file out of the studio after rehearsal, they stop to shake Feray’s hand, thank him, and say they’ll see him the next day. The Kravis performance of Cinderella is a couple of years in the making. It was originally scheduled to be the school’s tenth

hen Jupiter native Devon Luxton attended a production of Billy Elliot: The Musical at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, he knew he’d found his passion and future career. The story of an 11-year-old male ballet student in England inspired Luxton, also 11 at the time, to ask for lessons. His mother, Julie, a former professional dancer herself, enrolled him in the school at Paris Ballet and Dance on his twelfth birthday. “At first, my mom asked if I wanted to take hip-hop, but I knew right away that I liked ballet,” says Luxton, who is starring as Prince Charming in the Paris Ballet production of Cinderella at the Kravis Center May 15. A senior at the A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Luxton has exceeded expectations in his five years at Paris Ballet, quickly racking up national awards at the annual Youth America Grand Prix, often referred to as the “Olympics of ballet.” Recently, he earned a prestigious training spot at the Dutch National Ballet Academy in the Netherlands. After a round of video auditions, Luxton was one of 177 young dancers worldwide invited to audition in-person in Barcelona at an event attended by international ballet company directors looking for new talent. In the final round,

46

Luxton was one of only 10 dancers to be offered a position as a trainee with a company, a dream come true for the teen. “The Dutch National Ballet was the company I wanted,” he says. Before he attends the academy’s two-year training program this fall, he’ll spend the summer abroad, honing his skills in intensive classes at Princess Grace Academy at Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and the Royal Ballet School in London. Paris Ballet founder Jean-Hugues Feray is justifiably proud of Luxton and says there was never any doubt he would cast his talented student in the lead male role in Cinderella this year after the student who was originally slated to dance the part two years ago graduated and went off to the Houston Ballet Academy. “Of course, I had Devon in mind,” says Feray. “This year, [Luxton] will be graduating as well, so it’s extra special that he is in the lead.”

anniversary show. But then the pandemic hit. It was no doubt a disappointment, but there was also a positive side to the two-year delay. “I was only 13, almost 14, when I got the role of Cinderella,” says Flanigan, a Jupiter native. “Since then, I’ve definitely matured as a dancer, and now I feel more ready. Devon and I have been partnering for three years, and we’re used to performing together.” Feray chose to stage Cinderella partly because it has so many roles. There are 65 students in the cast (he even added roles for a dozen of his youngest students as Cinderella’s lucky charms). “We originally did this production in 2016, and I thought it was time to bring it back,” he says. In a way, the production brings Feray full circle in his career. As a teen, he was selected by ballet star Rudolf Nureyev to dance in his choreographed version of Cinderella at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples, Italy. He went on to perform as the lead in several other versions of the classic fairy tale. “I was so blessed to dance with such incredible choreography,” says Feray, now 49. Feray was destined to perform. At the age of 10, he was one of only six boys chosen out of 250 students to attend the Paris Opera Ballet School. He went on to the Paris Conservatory, graduating with the highest prize in ballet, awarded by a unanimous jury decision. From there, he danced with a few professional companies, including the French Ballet National of Nancy, where he scored a coveted soloist spot at the age of 20. This was heady stuff for a boy from Caen, in the Normandy region of France. One of four children, his mother originally thought ballet might be a possibility for one of her two daughters, but it was Feray who took to it. “From a young age, I knew I had to be on stage,” he says. After being invited to dance with Ballet Florida, he left France for the United States in 2000. He always knew that eventually he wanted to teach. And in 2009, after 20 years as a professional dancer, he founded Paris Ballet and Dance and revealed the school’s first performance in the spring of 2010. The nonprofit conservatory followed in 2013 in Abacoa before relocating to the current location on Jupiter Park Drive.

Over the years, many of Feray’s students have gone on to professional careers. One of his current conservatory students, 17-year-old Clare Keavy, is graduating early and will most likely join the Sarasota Ballet next year as a trainee. She is dancing the role of the Fairy Godmother in Feray’s production of Cinderella. Not every student wants to continue on to a professional career, and that’s just fine with Feray. “I don’t teach just to make pros,” he says. “I want them to succeed. The discipline and respect they learn from ballet will always be with them.” Watching his students perform in Dreyfoos Hall at the Kravis Center marks another career milestone for Feray. “It’s a special place to me,” he says. “Just the smell when I go into the theater brings back so many memories of when I performed there (with Ballet Florida). It means a lot to me to see my kids dance there.” parisballetdance.com; for tickets to Cinderella at the Kravis Center May 15, visit kravis.org ❖

f you’ve been feeling more stressed recently, you’re not alone. In the annual Stress in America survey conducted by The Harris Poll, researchers noted that the level of stress in America is reaching unprecedented levels. “Essentially, we are walking, talking pressure cookers of stress with no outlet of release,” says Matt Cardone, a Palm Beach Gardens–based meditation expert. “Anytime we are unable to adapt to a demand in a real-time circumstance, we incur stress. It can be tremendously destructive.” Everyone responds to stress differently, and finding the right therapy to help relieve your stress is key to good mental and physical health. Luckily, new methods are popping up all the time, and many of these therapies are offered right here in our area. Here are seven alternative stress relievers to try today.

SOUND HEALING

F

or Barbara Spaulding, a Stuart-based master sound healer, relieving stress is about changing our brain rhythms. Spaulding uses sound therapy to realign brain waves on a cellular level. “Everything in the universe is vibrating, and everything has its own unique frequency,” Spaulding explains. Sound therapy uses musical instruments, sounds, and vibrations to adjust a person’s brain waves to an optimal level. Says Spaulding: “Our goal is to train the frequencies of body and brain to a healthy level.” Keith Cini, owner of Agape Healing Arts in Tequesta, describes sound therapy as “harmonizing the vibration in our own body.” Lately, he says he has seen an influx of people looking for stress relief. “People are trying to gather tools to help themselves,” says Cini, who uses items such as tuning forks and Tibetan healing bowls in his practice. Spaulding and Cini encourage patients to use sound therapy at home. “Once we determine a person’s home note or soul note, they can buy a bowl that plays that note,” says Spaulding. Over time, the stronger, more consistent frequency will overcome the lesser, weaker frequency that leads to stress.

through life struggles by interacting with horses. Copeland explains that since horses communicate mainly through body language, they are highly in tune with emotional vibrations. “They seem to know exactly how to behave to open up one’s own ability to find solutions to troubling conditions,” she says. Copeland recalls a woman who suffered from PTSD and severe anxiety. Shortly into her session, the horses started exhibiting behavior reminiscent of the woman’s life. “I remember all three of us having goosebumps and her asking, ‘How do you make them do that?’ Our answer was, ‘We don’t.’” At Harmony Hope Stables in Palm City, founder Kristi Huddleston harnesses the power of horses and combines it with

MORNING: Meditation Starting your day with a short meditation can keep your mind focused on the present. Meditation expert Matt Cardone tells us how: Find a comfortable seated position with back support, then close your eyes and take three to five deep breaths. Invite your awareness to the senses, first by focusing on the sounds you can hear. Next focus on smell and the air entering and filling your body with a warm, healing light and emptying back out with ease. Now shift your attention to taste. Lastly, begin to bring awareness back to your body. Take one more deep breath and slowly open your eyes.

music to help children. She started the Harmony & Horses program after experiencing the healing power of horses and music firsthand. “Both have played a role in my own journey in life,” she says, noting that something as simple as grooming a horse can have a calming effect on a child. “Horses are highly intuitive around humans and their emotions,” she explains. “If you’re stressed, a horse will reflect that back at you. Horses need humans to be calm.” Music is integrated into the program through group music therapy, music classes, and daily music experiences that even the horses get in on. Huddleston recounts the story of how one horse helped a child who was having trouble calming down. “I called [our horse] Harmony over, and she went right over to one of the guitars and started strumming the strings with her teeth,” she says, noting that the child immediately started laughing.

BEDTIME: Herbal elixir The right herbal tea mix can alleviate stress, anxiety, and sleep problems. Jupiter-based registered herbalist and flower essence practitioner Gina Kearney says to look for teas with herbs such as reishi, ashwagandha, skullcap, holy basil (tulsi), licorice root, and schisandra. These herbs contain adaptogens that help the body adapt to and moderate stress and nervines to nourish, support, and restore the nervous system. For a restful sleep, choose a tea with herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, lavender, licorice root, passionflower, hops, and linden.

n addition to horses, all kinds of animals can play a big role in stress relief— especially dogs. At Jupiter-based Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch, they offer a program called Shelter to Service Dog, which provides canine companions to veterans to help with issues like Jupiter-based PTSD. “With dogs, there is no judgFurry Friends pairs ment,” says Curry Krasulak, Furry trained canines with veterans to Friends’ director of development. help with issues like PTSD. “Whether you leave the house for five hours or five days, it’s the same to them. They give unconditional love.” Krasulak says their dogs are trained to meet the needs of each individual veteran. For example, a dog may be trained to stand behind its owner or “block” to prevent people from getting too close, a big cause of stress and anxiety in many people with PTSD. MONTHLY: Full moon ritual A full moon ritual is about dedicating yourself to your own healing. Deena Rahill, creator and owner of Stuart-based HI Mindfulness Forums, explains: Each month, on the new moon, set an intention for yourself—basically, a new beginning. Then, on the full moon, let go of what no longer serves you, letting the moon’s power allow you to release what you need to and then restore you.

Knickerbocker served as a U.S. Marine from 2010 to 2014 and now trains dogs at the Furry Friends 27-acre ranch in Palm City. “Petting a dog lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), so just the presence of a dog makes a vet feel comforted,” she says. “I give back now hoping to give others the same experience I’ve had.”

like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins that make you feel good. Float pods are low-gravity, so the near-weightlessness of the environment relaxes the body as well as the mind, elongating the spine and easing neck and back pain. “I find stress, pain, and inflammation often go hand in hand, and if you can reduce one, chances are you’ll reduce the others as well,” says Ringler.

SALT THERAPY

“W

e are in a more stressful time in the world right now,” says Jamie Gonzalez, owner of The Salt Suite in Palm Beach Gardens. Gonzalez says that engaging in salt therapy increases the negative ions in our bodies. She explains: “Negative ions are the happy ions. Positive ions are things like dust and pollutants, and they knock out the negative ions.” At The Salt Suite, pharmaceutical-grade salt is blown into a room by Halo generators during a 45-minute session. The salt air reduces inflammation and detoxifies the body, causing an antidepressant effect. Salt therapy also increases oxygen in the body and improves sleep, both of which reduce stress. “What truly makes the salt room relaxing is the quiet space, no technology, and just focusing on breathing,” says Laura Barnes, owner of Southern Salt Therapies in Port St. Lucie. “Our far infrared–heated mats also tone down anxiety, soothe, and calm.” Far infrared is a type of heat that is distributed beyond the top tissue layers of skin and works with the circulatory system. Barnes takes salt therapy one step further, offering restorative salt yoga classes. “Breathing in pure salt air while moving through a restorative practice brings a double dose of healing,” she says. omfort and relaxation are two of the biggest benefits of float therapy, a sensory-deprivation experience that takes place in a float tank. Matt Ringler, owner of True REST Float Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, has been reaping the benefits himself for years. “I began floating five and a half years ago for my own stress and sleep issues,” he says. Floating at True REST involves entering a “float pod” filled with water and dissolved Epsom salts. You control your own experience, choosing silence or music, darkness or light, and closed lid or open lid. The goal, explains Ringler, is to reduce external stimuli to lower the brain’s production of stress hormones, allowing for increased production of hormones like melatonin and neurotransmitters

hile float and salt therapy promote the benefits of quiet and relaxation for stress relief, dance therapy uses movement to treat the mind and body in conjunction. Marian Chace pioneered this form of therapy in the early twentieth century. A dance instructor, Chace encouraged her students to express emotions and unburden themselves through dancing, which resulted in increased feelings of well-being in her students. Chace’s discovery eventually led to the formation of the American Dance Therapy Association, which provides training and certification for dance movement therapists like Alexia C. Ioannides. A licensed psychotherapist, Ioannides has been using dance therapy to help patients in her Palm Beach practice since 2014. “Dance movement therapy is about how mind, body, and spirit are interconnected,” she says. “Changes in the body affect the mind, and vice versa.” Dance therapy is not dance in a traditional sense—it’s not performance based, but more about the act of movement. Ioannides explains that a dance movement therapist will mirror a patient’s movements, creating kinesthetic empathy. “Basically, I feel what you are feeling,” she says. “It’s extremely powerful.” ❖

Loosely translated to “taking in the forest,” this practice emerged in Japan in the 1980s and eventually evolved into guided experiences and forest therapy, a passion of Sara Piotter, senior environmental educator at the Environmental Learning Center in Vero Beach and a certified forest therapy guide. “What I love about forest therapy is that it’s about giving people ideas for taking a moment out and slowing down,” she says. Mark Pinsky, MD Pinsky Plastic Surgery

Nonsurgical aesthetic rejuvenation has come a long way over the years, and what once required invasive surgery with extensive downtime can now often be achieved with relatively quick office-based procedures with little or no time off. Staying at the forefront of these advancements is board-certified plastic surgeon Mark Pinsky, MD. Because of the doctor’s involvement with research and development leaders like Allergan, Galderma, and Merz, his team hears about new technologies before they enter the market. Each year, this award-winning practice evaluates innovative treatments on the market, conducting extensive research to find the best solutions for its patients. Some of the latest and exceptional technologies offered at Pinsky Plastic Surgery include Emsculpt Neo, Morpheus8,

FaceTite, AccuTite, and Revance RHA. While people like to take advantage of new and improved aesthetic treatments, it can be difficult to know which are the best and who’s best qualified to perform them. That’s why it’s important to find a plastic surgeon with the experience and wisdom to provide optimal results. As a board-certified doctor, Pinsky and his team receive the most advanced and insightful training from around the country for these devices. They are also fully committed to exceptional patient care through safe and remarkably effective procedures. Patients continue to seek out Pinsky Plastic Surgery as their specified resource for new and legacy technologies. We invite you to visit us and find out why.

Lychee LOVE

O

ne of the most intriguing fruits is the lychee. These small, easy-to-peel tropical fruits native to South Asia boost the immune system, aid in digestion, and improve blood circulation, among other benefits, and they’ve been popping up in everything from desserts to cocktails to vegan ceviche. For many in the United States, lychees are imported goods—but South Floridians can pick them directly off the tree when in season. One place to check out is O’Berry Lychee Grove in Jupiter. “Lychee season usually starts at the end of May, God willing,” says Edwin O’Berry, owner of his

family’s namesake business. “It usually lasts one to two weeks, depending on how well the trees produce.” Locals interested in picking lychees at the grove receive a bag and a fruit picker, though O’Berry recommends visitors bring their own bag to help reduce the amount of landfill and pollution. His U-Pick offers 400 lychee trees in Brewster and Mauritius varieties as well as longans (another tropical fruit) and is open by appointment from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting, during season. Turn to page 96 for a cocktail recipe that incorporates fresh lychees. Book an appointment at the Grove: 561.262.8660 MAY/JUNE 2022 | JUPITER

FRESH Catch

S

eminole Reef Grill debuted in March, creating a new boatto-table category in local seafood restaurants. The key to the restaurant’s mission is a commercial fishing license that allows staff to buy directly from fishermen. This gives them access to the freshest possible daily catch, while most restaurants are required to deal with middlemen. Every item on the fishing boats is dated and stamped via Renowned local marine artist Carey a tracking system Chen painted this mural that enables the inside the restaurant. fish to be audited. As a result, the restaurant offers up to 10 different varieties of fresh catch daily. “We have the most experienced and knowledgeable

94

team of restaurant people I’ve ever seen in one place,” says General Manager Shelly Kolar. That group includes owner Jerry Hansen, a veteran restaurateur who owns Johnny Longboats on Singer Island, as well as managing partner Bruce Caprara, who managed Jupiter Ale House and Carmine’s in Palm Beach Gardens. (Kolar also owned several restaurants in her home state of Iowa.) Chef Andy Diep is a sushi master who forgoes expected sauces like spicy mayo and relies on the flavors and integrity of his ingredients instead. Standout dishes include the maple jack salmon, lobster thermidor, and chef’s signature French onion soup and swordfish au poivre. Caprara is partial to the house-made smoked fish dip and macadamia nut–crusted grouper, while Kolar enjoys shrimp scampi and the flatbread garnished with shrimp and marinated goat cheese, served with a mango barbecue sauce. There are nine different salads to choose from. Raw bar selections vary from day to day, depending on what shellfish are available in the market.

Highlights from the non-seafood side of the menu include slow-braised short ribs, double-thick bourbon-glazed pork chops, and chicken giardiniera (free-range breasts with hot pickled Italian vegetables, served over buttered rigatoni). The well-rounded wine list features whites that range from the light and crisp end of the scale (Albariño and Vinho Verde) to profound bottles such as Kistler’s Les Noisetiers Chardonnay or the Puligny Montrachet from Domaine Alain Chavy in Burgundy. Stellar reds include Pinot Noir from Beaux Freres and Kosta Browne, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Schrader, Plumpjack, and Hundred Acre. Several carefully chosen examples of Japanese sake complement the sushi bar selections. The restaurant’s boat-to-table theme is enhanced by the artwork of Carey Chen, the renowned local marine artist whose work has gained national and international fame. Chen executed the vivid 30-foot mural of sea life behind the sushi bar, and more than a dozen of his prints are on view at the restaurant. Some of his nautical-themed clothing and merchandise are offered for sale as well. Seminole Reef Grill seats slightly more than 200 diners inside, with space for an additional 50 on the terrace. The restaurant’s motto is “Key West casual meets Palm Beach elegance,” and the principals are confident they have a winning formula. “This is a challenging time to be opening a restaurant,” says Kolar. “But we’re fearless with what we’ve created, and we think it will be exciting for the area.” seminolereefgrill.com

t’s lychee season! Stop by Kabuki Sushi Thai Tapas in Palm Beach Gardens to enjoy a Lycheetini—a martini that blends fresh lychee nectar with cranberry and vodka. “The Lycheetini pairs extremely well with all of the dishes on our menu,” says Ann-Marie Sementelli, Kabuki’s general manager. The restaurant typically sells about 40 Lycheetinis on a busy evening. Part of the cocktail’s popularity is the way it complements highly spiced dishes. Plus, availability is never an issue for Kabuki. “We use fresh lychees when they are in season and freeze them for use in the off-season,” says Sementelli. “This allows us to have the drink on our menu year-round.” Try your hand at making a Kabuki Lycheetini with this recipe. kabukiwpb.com KABUKI LYCHEETINI [makes one drink]

INGREDIENTS 2 oz. vodka 1 ½ oz. lychee nectar (recipe below) ½ oz. cranberry juice PREPARATION Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add vodka, lychee nectar, and cranberry juice. Shake until chilled, then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with peeled lychee. TO MAKE LYCHEE NECTAR Since lychee season is short, fans of this cocktail can make a large batch of nectar and freeze it. Peel the skin and remove the seed from 15 lychees. Blend the lychees with 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar until smooth. Strain to remove pulp.
