Working in media and also being a bit of a true crime buff, I had an immediate connection with our cover star, Randi Kaye, when we met at the photo shoot back in June. An Emmy Award–winning TV news journalist, Randi has been on the front lines reporting on many of the major stories I’ve followed over the years for news programs and outlets like Nightline, World News Tonight, CBS News, and now for CNN. Plus, she and her husband, Ross Holland, are just incredibly cool people with hearts of gold. They welcomed us into their Singer Island home, a stunning penthouse overlooking the beach that showcases the talents of Ross—an artist with a knack for interior design—while their golden retriever, Gatsby, happily followed us around. I was heartbroken when Randi later reached out to tell me that Gatsby had unexpectedly passed away not long after the shoot. When they decided to get another dog, they adopted a blind pup they named Sunday and are now lovingly guiding him through life, introducing him to the sounds and glorious smells of life at the beach. Hearts of gold. Get to know a little more about Randi’s life and career—and see her and Ross’s beautiful home— in “A Nose for News,” beginning on page 38.

The power of community

Welcome to our October issue, a special edition that includes our annual Charity Datebook—a timely and useful resource for those who wish to participate in fundraising events supporting our local community. As season begins, now is the time to mark your calendar and secure tickets for luncheons, galas, and exhibits before they sell out. While event attendance is important to these groups, most also appreciate the help of volunteers to achieve their goals. I believe the power of a community is measured by how it cares for those in need and the compassion it shares. As Helen Keller famously said: “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a cause that hits very close to home for me. I am a breast cancer survivor. I’ve never mentioned that in this column before. Although I have confided in others who are walking a similar path, this is the first time I’ve had the courage to share my story publicly.

I was diagnosed in November 2015 when my wonderful physician (I’ll call her Dr. W) noticed a small lump in my breast that had not shown up during my annual mammogram screening. She quickly scheduled a sonogram and a biopsy. And then we waited….

That time waiting for the test results was torture as I was in a state of anxious denial. When the phone finally rang, I was driving. I pulled over so Dr. W could deliver the news—and it was not good. My abject shock was quickly followed by tears and a call to my husband, Keith, who is my rock. He calmed me down so I could make my way home.

A month later, I had a seven-hour surgery performed by two amazing doctors. I elected to have a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery and implants because I was less afraid of surgery than radiation and chemotherapy, which luckily were unnecessary for me.

I wish I could convey just how important the power of community was for me throughout this ordeal. I can’t imagine how I would have managed without my husband, sister, parents, family, and friends. I love each and every one of them and am so grateful to have them in my life.

If you happen to be navigating this same journey, my love and heart go out to you. For those who know someone affected by breast cancer, please take the time to reach out and offer whatever support they may need—or just to say hi. The conversation doesn’t have to be about how they feel or where they are in the process. In fact, a call to check in or to invite them to do something fun might be a welcome respite.

I still feel stressed when I go in for blood work every six months. I don’t think that worry will ever go away, but I have learned to deal with it by savoring every moment with my family and friends, enjoying travel, and taking part in community events. I am forever grateful to Dr. W, who saved my life. I am an almost eight-year survivor of breast cancer, and I’m looking forward to marking my 10-year milestone. In the time since my diagnosis, I’ve learned there is little that is more rewarding than helping others. Thank goodness there are so many incredible fundraising organizations in our area that allow me to do plenty of that.

In Melissa Pribish’s world, everything old is new again. The Jupiter resident has made a business out of giving old furniture new life, refinishing pieces and selling them at Do-Over Décor in Jensen Beach. “Growing up, I was taught to always see the value in things,” says Pribish, 49, whose greataunt Dorothy was an antiques dealer. “You just didn’t throw anything away.”

Pribish is one of 16 local artists whose pieces are sold at Do-Over Décor. The shop was opened in 2018 by Denise Aragona, 58, a Port St. Lucie resident who had recently started dabbling in furniture refurbishing at the time. She got the idea for Do-Over Décor when she realized her particular style didn’t appeal to everyone. “I decided to add vendors who share the same passion but each have a different style,” she says.

With an estimated 12 million tons of furnishings being discarded by Americans every year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, refurbishers like Aragona and Pribish are diminishing the impact on landfills. In addition, reusing old furniture means fewer trees are harvested for new furniture manufacturing.

Most of the pieces sold at the shop come from estate sales, yard sales, and neighbors’ castoffs that might otherwise end up in landfills. To create new pieces, the artists use a range of techniques including paint washes, layering, blended finishes, and colored wax to add dimension. Some, like Pribish, also incorporate transfers, stencils, and hand painting to create unique graphical designs. “I let the furniture speak to me,” says Pribish.

For budding furniture refinishers, Do-Over Décor also offers classes in basics and specific techniques including Furniture Painting 101, Resin Art, and Special Techniques. Pribish urges newbies not to be afraid to give it a go: “Just try it, because if you don’t like the results the first time, you just do it over again!”

Start with good bones. Pick a quality piece of furniture and examine it closely. Make sure you know in advance if it needs repair and how to fix it.

Prep is key. Spend a lot of time stripping, sanding, patching, and priming. The better the prep, the better your finish will be.

Start small. Begin with an easy piece like a small table, then work your way to more complicated projects.

JUPITER NATIVE PAIGE PADON JACKSON BRINGS A WEST COAST VIBE TO TEQUESTA AT ROW HOUSE

In the first chapter of her professional life, interior designer Paige Padon Jackson directed California-based Hollywood at Home, the decorating showroom of renowned interior designer Peter Dunham. Under her tenure, the shop amassed a fan following that included celebrities Ellen DeGeneres and Drew Barrymore, among others. It was during those West Coast days that Padon Jackson discovered the allure of vintage shopping. She loved procuring pieces with storied pasts and inherent personality and getting to know artisans from around the world, each with their own unique sense of style.

With a newfound love of treasure hunting and a refined sense of California style, Padon Jackson— who grew up in the Jupiter area—returned to her home state with her cinematographer husband and young son in 2007 and opened Row House. The boutique was originally located in West Palm Beach’s historic Northwood area, but earlier this year she relocated the business to Tequesta (she plans to open a new West Palm Beach location this fall).

Located on Tequesta Drive across from Casa Caña, Row House is a curio cabinet of exciting finds, filled with Padon Jackson’s thoughtfully cultivated collection of home goods and a tranquil, modern organic vibe that transports visitors to the serene Pacific Coast. “My aesthetic is very different than the typical Florida style,” says Padon Jackson. “I gravitate toward more neutral and saturated colors, and I love texture.”

She still finds the most joy uncovering unique items to add to

the shop’s collective interior. “Sourcing is definitely my favorite part about owning a store,” she says. “I absolutely love finding new products, and I buy things for the shop that I would want in my own house. Meet the newlyweds who celebrated their love in August with a sustainable wedding, courtesy of Loggerhead Marinelife Center

College sweethearts Rachel Shanker, 29, and Erick Espana, 30, met through a mutual friend while students at Florida Atlantic University. Over time, their friendship blossomed into romance, and they got engaged in June 2021. But two years later, they still hadn’t even set a date. When they heard about Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s contest to win a free sustainable wedding (valued at $45,000), they decided to toss their hats into the ring.

According to Loggerhead event manager Tonya Pellegrini, the couple was one of 145 who sent in a submission. Part of the submission process involved creating a 45-second video expressing why having a sustainable wedding was so important to the couple. Shanker and Espana’s video focused on their shared passion for preserving nature. “We’re both biologists at

heart and really love going out on the water and into Florida’s ecosystems and exploring, so our beliefs are really rooted in taking care of the environment,” says Shanker, who is the manager of education and conservation at Manatee Lagoon. The entries were narrowed down to five finalists by the North County Chamber of Commerce and Discover The Palm Beaches, and Shanker and Espana learned they were among the lucky bunch. In June, they received an invitation to come to Loggerhead for a photo shoot with the other finalists. But it was all a ruse: When they arrived, they were told that they were the contest winners!

“A tray of Champagne appeared, and then a news camera came out,” recalls Shanker, who was in disbelief. “They’d all been hiding, and then we were swarmed by happy people.”

The couple finally had a date—and a venue. The wedding would take place on August 18 in Juno Beach at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. Now they had just two months to plan their big day. Luckily, the prize included not only the venue but also

the bridal gown, catering, linens, a DJ, flowers, photographer, invitations, a two-night stay at Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa, and a planner to make things a little easier on them.

“We are so grateful to Loggerhead Marinelife Center and all the vendors that gave their time and services for the giveaway,” says the new bride. “I am still a little bit shell-shocked.”

Loggerhead always has sustainability top of mind when they host events. They decided to run this wedding contest, says Pellegrini, to shine light on how sustainable weddings can help our planet—and how to pull one off.

“Reducing carbon footprint is essential in creating a sustainable wedding,” she says. “Having the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner and dancing at one location helps cut down on guest travel, for example. We offer the couple locally sourced and seasonal food options and a plated dinner instead of a buffet to

cut down on food waste. We use only natural materials (rather than single-use plastics), recycled paper or digital invitations, and we rent decor, linens, plates, glassware, flatware, and chairs rather than purchasing everything. The florist uses seasonal flowers and foliage, and we highly encourage couples to reduce plastic waste by opting out of offering party favors to guests.”

Proceeds from all weddings hosted at Loggerhead support sea turtle research, rehabilitation, conservation, and education. The 12,000-square-foot certified green building can accommodate up to 300 guests in the Ocean Discovery Wing ballroom or 200 guests atop the Ocean Deck.

“It’s a beautiful venue, so I would definitely encourage anyone to get married there,” Shanker says. “I hope the publicity [of our wedding] brings new people not just to rent the venue space but also just to come and learn about sea turtles and conservation.” ❖

WITH A LIFELONG LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS, EMILY DARK IS BLAZING A TRAIL AS THE LEADER OF MARTIN COUNTY’S NEW ECOTOURISM PROGRAM

Emily Dark credits a lionfish with launching her career in ecotourism. Martin County’s new ecosystem restoration and ecotourism coordinator, Dark came to Florida in the summer of 2012 to study fish communities in the Florida mangroves. A student at Antioch University New England pursuing a master’s degree in environmental science with a focus on

conservation biology, she had landed an internship with the Smithsonian Marine Station, a research center in Fort Pierce specializing in biodiversity and the ecosystems of Florida. As an intern, Dark assisted scientists with fieldwork and also began conducting her own research on the invasive lionfish species.

“I fell in love with the Indian River Lagoon,” says Dark, 42. So much so

that she returned to Florida in the winter of 2013 to work on her master’s thesis, which focused on lionfish in the mangroves. Those visits would eventually change the course of her intended career path.

Dark’s love of the outdoors began early in her life. Growing up in New Hampshire with “very outdoorsy parents,” she recalls spending a lot of time camping as a child. After earning her undergraduate degree in anthropology with a minor in environmental science from Hartwick College in New York, she worked at an animal shelter and volunteered at an aquarium, thinking she would pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In 2006, she moved to Puerto Rico, where she led horse and kayak tours in the island’s bioluminescent bays before returning to New Hampshire in 2011 to begin grad school at Antioch.

After completing her thesis in 2014, Dark’s in-depth knowledge of the lionfish didn’t immediately land her a full-time job in the industry. But it did earn her some extra tips as a waitress.

“I was working at a restaurant in Vero Beach, and they started selling lionfish,” she says, recalling that she was management’s go-to server for all questions about the menu item. “They’d say, ‘Go talk to table 12!’ I sold a lot of lionfish.”

It wasn’t long before she landed a position doing what she loved. In December 2014, she joined the State of Florida’s Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves office, where she worked in natural resource management, participated in habitat restoration projects, and conducted research. In 2021, she was recruited by Martin County for the role of coastal management coordinator, and in November 2022 she was offered a new role with the county that combines ecosystems management and ecotourism. “This [hybrid position] is me in a nutshell,” she says. “It’s my passion for the environment combined with educating people.”

The Explore Natural Martin Ecotourism Program, which launched earlier this year, aims to educate residents and visitors on the responsible exploration of nature by engaging them in various outdoor activities and attractions. Over the summer—through partnerships with local organizations like the Treasure Coast Astronomical Society, Hobe Sound Nature Center, and Audubon of Martin County, as well as the Jensen Beach–based environmental consulting firm Ecological Associates Inc.—Dark began leading kids and adults on guided eco-walks, sea turtle nest excavations, moon observation nights, birding excursions, and edible landscaping classes. The county has also partnered with Leave No Trace—a national organization that

provides education, skills, research, and science to help people care for the outdoors—to expand the number of nature programs offered locally.

Ultimately, Dark hopes to create as many opportunities as possible for people to get to know the natural world around them and understand the importance of preserving it. “My goal is to build a sustainable program that engages residents and visitors so they want to take part in stewardship,” she says. “People don’t protect things they don’t connect with.” ❖

After moving from Indiana to Florida, Jupiter-based physician Bill Wunder was ready to spend more time with family doing the things they love—including many days on the water aboard a new World Cat 325CC

For Dr. Bill Wunder and his wife, Debbie, a move into semi-retirement from Noblesville, Indiana to Jupiter, Florida wouldn’t be complete without enjoying the water activities their new hometown has to offer. Luckily, a three-day schedule for Wunder as a primary care physician with Jupiter Medical Center leaves plenty of time to take advantage of that.

Along with their three kids and seven grandkids, the Wunders enjoy everything from relaxing at the sandbar to offshore fishing. Upon moving to town in 2019, Wunder purchased a new 27-foot center console from a dealer in Stuart, but it quickly became apparent that more onboard space was necessary for this large family.

A return trip to Ocean Blue Marine looking to trade up led to an unexpected turn. The salesman pointed out a new World Cat 325CC, which initially offered zero appeal to Wunder. After the salesman urged him to “just take it for a ride before you decide,” a sea trial was arranged—and Wunder was immediately impressed with both the soft ride and the generous amount of deck space for his large crew.

It’s no secret that catamaran boats can offer a ride unlike many others in choppy weather, and this is often the factor that closes the deal for manufacturers such as World Cat. This proved to be the case with the Wunders when they decided to purchase the

325CC. But equally impressive to them was the amount of room to work around onboard this design. The fact that these boats carry most of their beam all the way forward, rather than tapering to a point, adds plenty of extra real estate to lounge around

or fish within. Add to this the inherent stability of a dual hull and it’s easy to see why so many folks favor World Cats as family-friendly vessels.

On the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, luxury hospitality brand Aman has introduced its signature Asian-infused minimalism and serene spaces, bringing a moment of calm to a city known for its electric energy.

Award-winning television journalist Randi Kaye covers major news stories all over the country, returning home to her penthouse oasis on Singer Island to recharge

Throughout her career as an Emmy Award–winning television news journalist, Randi Kaye has flown with the Blue Angels, witnessed the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, and covered high-profile murder trials. Although her work brings her all over the country, it’s Florida where she feels most at home and engaged. “There’s so much news here,” says the Singer Island resident. “Florida Man is always busy. I like that I can just get in my car, drive down the road, and start reporting.”

Born in Yonkers, New York and raised in New Jersey, Kaye comes from a family of four children, whose parents were a kindergarten teacher (mom) and an executive with pet care company Hartz (dad). She recalls reading newspapers and watching the news as she was growing up and says it was at age 14 when she realized she could make a living as a reporter. “I had a crush on a boy whose father was a news anchor,” she says. “I was invited to a party at his house, and I spent the entire time talking to his dad about what he did. When I went home, I told my father that I wanted to be a reporter.”

After graduating from Boston University in 1989 with a degree in broadcast journalism, Kaye set her sights on a career in television news. She recalls working with a coach to learn how to read the teleprompter without standing up to follow the scroll, as she once did, and then sending out tapes to local stations where she hoped to land a job. A few offers came—one in Akron, Ohio and another in Binghamton, New York—but she decided to turn down these small-town opportunities and head straight to the Big Apple. She moved to New York City, figuring she would get by on temp work until she could find on-air employment in Manhattan.

She broke into the industry as a staff assistant on ABC’s Nightline before becoming Peter Jennings’ assistant on World News Tonight. She covered Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign

from his home state of Arkansas. In 1992, when she was 25, she went on the air for the very first time, reporting on the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s bear-tagging effort in western Arkansas’s Ouachita Mountains.

“It was an amazing experience,” she recalls of the nonviolent tagging process in which a bear is temporarily tranquilized to allow scientists to perform health monitoring like weighing and blood work, as part of the effort to track and help the animals. “I got to hold bear cubs in my jacket to keep them warm while [scientists] worked on the mama bears.”

She spent more than a year working as a reporter and anchor for the ABC affiliate in Little Rock, where she covered the Whitewater investigation, the death of Clinton’s mom, and more. Then it was off to Dallas for a stint with Good

Morning Texas. After that, it was on to Minneapolis, where she covered Jesse Ventura’s run for governor for the city’s CBS News affiliate.

It was in Minneapolis that she met her husband, Ross Holland, in 1997. “He had this mysterious air about him,” Kaye recalls of first meeting him at a house party. “He didn’t come on strong, and he was sort of a challenge to figure out and get to know. I liked that it didn’t come easy, though he was interested. He was super cute and just really kind and very funny.”

Holland, a real estate investor and also a talented artist, might have played it cool, but he recalls being instantly attracted to Kaye. “I just thought she was adorable and had a great smile,” he says. Holland didn’t yet know what Kaye did for a living, and she liked it that way. It meant they were able to get to know each other as individuals rather than Holland viewing her solely as a television anchor. They discovered they shared a passion for tennis, among other things, and in 2003, they decided to get married.

At Gay Head Lighthouse in Martha’s Vineyard, they tied the knot—with absolutely zero fanfare. “It was just four people,” Holland says. “Randi, me, the guy who married us, and the guy who let us in the lighthouse.”

In December 2004, Kaye landed at her current employer, CNN, joining the team as a national correspondent. The newlyweds began splitting their time between New York and Atlanta, where the network is headquartered. At CNN, Kaye covers breaking news and provides in-depth investigative reports for the show Anderson Cooper 360. A self-described true crime buff, she has reported on and hosted CNN documentaries about major stories like the LAPD manhunt for cop killer Christopher Dorner, the Jodi Arias murder trial, and the Boston Marathon bombing.

When her mother was diagnosed with

lung cancer, Kaye began commuting to Florida on weekends to spend time with her in Boca Raton, where she resided. “After she passed away, I moved back to Atlanta,” says Kaye. “I soon realized how much I missed the beach and Florida, so Ross and I started looking for a place here. We ended up on Singer Island because it’s quiet, and there is the

water and some nice restaurants.”

They bought a “decorator ready” condo there 10 years ago, which means it was fundamentally a shell and renovationsavvy Holland could make it their own. Holland, who has a knack for interior design, spent a year figuring out exactly what he wanted to do and then got to work designing every detail of their new home. He used Venetian plaster on the walls (“I love the texture,” he says) accented with reclaimed barrel oak. He decorated the space with comfortably rustic

Restoration Hardware furniture sprinkled with vintage pieces he customized with visual reminders of some of their favorite places. He even designed and created the stunningly unique dining table himself. “We call the design of the residence an amalgam of industrial farmhouse and California beach house,” he says.

On the walls is some of Holland’s own artwork. His large, boldly colored paintings incorporate words, numbers, binary code, and geometric shapes—all tools used to

communicate with others and make sense of the world, he explains. A favorite piece hangs in the master bedroom: It’s a large, red canvas filled with texture, binary code, and the word “smitten,” a none-too-subtle reminder of Holland’s affection for his wife, which he gifted her one year for their anniversary.

Both dog lovers, the couple adopted a 1-year-old golden retriever in 2016 they named Gatsby. Their “spunky ball of fluff” quickly became a regular at local haunts like Sailfish Marina and the off-leash park in Juno Beach, where Kaye says he loved to lap up all the attention he got from everyone.

Sadly, at press time, Gatsby passed away unexpectedly at 8 years old—a tragic turn of events that devastated the couple. “Gatsby had a personality that would just make your heart melt,” says Kaye. “Some of our best memories

are with him.”

Without Gatsby, Holland says there was “a big hole” in their life. That’s why they made the decision to jump back in and adopt a new golden, whom they named Sunday (their favorite day of the week). Sunday was born blind, but he is adjusting well to his new life with his doting parents—and he is a much-needed blessing for all.

“He came into our lives when we needed him,” Kaye says. “We just want to give him a ton of love.”

After jewelry designer Lauren (Krestalude) Hubbard of LK Bridal Designs

in Stuart met her future hubby on Facebook, the lovebirds planned a modern wedding with bohemian-chic touches in their own backyard

Popping life’s most amorous question can be a daunting task, and that is especially true when one’s significant other designs gasp-worthy engagement rings for a living.

Robbie Hubbard, who is president of sales at Complete Synthetic Turf in Stuart, always knew that when it came time to propose to his girlfriend, Lauren Krestalude (now Hubbard), he would need to do something truly special. Lauren grew up in the jewelry business and owns LK Bridal Designs and Anchor Jewelers in Stuart. “I didn’t want to underwhelm someone who sees and hears a lot of great stories from guys who do a really good job [with their proposal],” Robbie says.

The couple first met on Facebook in 2017—Lauren made the first move. “I saw his picture in the ‘People You May Know’ section, and one of my friends urged me to friend request him with a message,” recalls Lauren. “She said, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ So I did.”

He replied, and they exchanged numbers. Two weeks later, they met up in person.

“He texted me, ‘I’m going to the golf course if you want to meet me there,’” Lauren recalls. “I replied that I had my daughter with me, and he was like, ‘Cool, I have my son.’ So we both brought our kids, who were both in kindergarten at the time, and met for the first time at Palm Cove Golf Course.”

Lauren and Robbie Hubbard tied the knot in their Palm City backyard in February 2023.

It was a perfect pairing, and a year later, Robbie and his son moved into Lauren’s Port St. Lucie home. The following November, he proposed at Fort Pierce’s White City Park. “It was just before my thirtieth birthday,” Lauren says. “My best friend Jessica came into my store and handed me a manila envelope from Robbie with a note inside saying my birthday weekend was starting now and I had to turn over my car keys and get into Jessica’s car.”

Inside the car, she found a gift—a pair of Tory Birch sandals and an iPad containing a video with memorable moments from the past year that Robbie had personalized with music. For the next half hour, Lauren was on a scavenger hunt, making stops at boutiques like Monkee’s of Stuart, where gifts like a blue dress Lauren had once admired online and a diamond-monogrammed Yeti cup were waiting. When she and Jessica returned to the car, they found snowboarding goggles, ski passes, and airline tickets— departing to Breckenridge, Colorado in six hours.

The next stop on the scavenger hunt was White City Park, and as they made a loop around the lake, Lauren spotted Robbie standing there with both of their children. She didn’t notice the photographer hiding a few yards away: “The only thing I remember is looking at Jessica like, ‘Holy [expletive], is this happening?’ and her forcing me out of the car because I was frozen.”

It was there that Robbie proposed with a ring that Lauren had unknowingly fashioned for herself. “A few months before, I had attended a five-day jewelry conference in Louisiana,” she explains. “At the time, Robbie was helping me with marketing so he came

with me.” In one of the sessions she attended, participants used computer-aided design to conceive the engagement ring of their dreams—and Robbie was paying attention. He sent her design off to be professionally cast. “I had no idea he had put the whole thing together,” says Lauren.

After the proposal, the couple headed to Casa Amigos in Port St. Lucie to celebrate with friends and family members before departing for their quick trip to Breckenridge. When they returned from Colorado, they agreed that the wedding planning would have to wait. The couple wanted to prioritize having their first baby together, whom they named Colby. Then they were busy moving into a larger home in Palm City. And then they learned they were expecting another baby—this time a girl, Spencer—in May 2022.

With a new home base and two new kids in their growing family, the couple was now ready to get down to wedding business. Robbie’s own parents had tied the knot at home, and he and Lauren decided a small backyard wedding was exactly what they wanted. To help them plan the perfect day, they turned to Jade Smith of Stuart-based Island Party Rentals and Unearthed Rentals, whom Lauren had known for many years and even designed her engagement ring.

For the overall design, the bride wanted an elegant and bohemian-chic aesthetic. “We included lots of natural colors and combined them with deeper hues like terracotta, rust, and slate blue,” Smith says. One important and unique element? “Market lighting!” Lauren says, referring to the trendy and delicate string lights. “They have a modern look that I absolutely love. My favorite elements were the lights and the neon sign with our name.”

On February 4, 2023, 200 of the couple’s closets friends and family members gathered under those market lights to celebrate Lauren and Robbie on their wedding day. As guests strolled into the couple’s backyard, local musician Alexa Kajangu performed Jason Mraz covers and soulful ballads by crooners like Jack Johnson. They nibbled on hors d’oeuvres from Chef’s Table and drank signature tipples served from a circular, 20-foot bar crowned with the couple’s last name in neon lights. In a boho-imbued lounge area, guests could mingle and relax, and a photo booth bus courtesy of Good Times Roll was parked on site to capture all the memories.

The bride, stunning in an A-line dress by Essence of Australia, walked down the aisle with a bouquet of roses, pampas, and wildflowers as Kajangu sang a tear-jerking rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The groom looked dapper in a light blue State & Liberty suit, floral necktie, and white Nike Air Force 1 shoes that matched his groomsmen.

Immanuel Lutheran Church’s lead pastor, Chad Fair, officiated the ceremony and delighted everyone with a humorous speech laced with golf jokes—and jabbed at the time it took for the couple to tie the knot. “It was a longstanding joke with Robbie’s mother, who said she

wrote our wedding date in pencil because of how many times we changed it,” Lauren says, laughing.

After the couple exchanged vows, guests enjoyed a post-ceremony cocktail hour while the bridal party rushed to take photos before the last rays of sunlight dipped beneath the horizon. When they returned to the reception, it was time to party. As the bridesmaids hit the glossy dance floor edged with marquee letters, they waved glow sticks to the beat of Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Then it was the groomsmen’s turn, who formed a huddle before strutting in to the NFL Sunday theme song.

Dinner was a swanky, buffet-style feast with options like filet mignon carving stations, a live-action pasta bar, and a do-it-yourself mashed bar. Desserts included carrot cake, Funfetti, red velvet cupcakes from Publix Martin Downs, and a pint-sized layered masterpiece of lemon cake and raspberry compote. During dinner, the newlyweds shared their first dance, and by the time the fatherdaughter dance wrapped, everyone was on the dance floor.

When the festivities wound down just after 11 p.m., some of the bridal party and their spouses wanted to keep the party going at a local bar. Trying not to be party poopers, the exhausted newlyweds boarded the rented bus and headed to a pub in town. But with four young kids at home, they were out of practice with the late-night scene. “Normally, we go to bed the same time as our kids, so staying up that late was really a thrill,” says Lauren. “But Robbie and I were so tired, we made it as far as the Harpers parking lot.” ❖

Stuart’s new Frazier Creek Brewing and Distilling Co., which opened its doors in May, started out as a business idea eight years ago. It began with a group of local friends— Etienne Bourgeois, Aron Trocchia, Peter Hibberd, Dan Rogers, and Rory Macey—who all have a passion for craft beers, home brewing, and homemade libations. They decided to combine their individual talents, skills, and enthusiasm and open a “brewstillery” (brewery and distillery) in downtown Stuart.

Frazier Creek currently offers 18-plus craft beers on tap (made in-house) including the best-selling, double dry-hopped Turbo Series IPA, while slushie machines serve up piña coladas and rum runners. The brewstillery makes its own vodka, gin, limoncello, and rum, which are available for purchase by the bottle. “We do not purchase neutral spirits made elsewhere or take any shortcuts,” says Bourgeois. “We make our beverages the way they were made in Potsdam, Germany in the nineteenth century, with the help of modern technology of course.” (A bit of history: Stuart, Florida was originally named Potsdam by Otto Stypman from Potsdam, Germany.) Adds Bourgeois: “We love our local history and believe that incorporating that history and geography into the brewery is important for our community.”

On the food front, Frazier Creek has partnered with local restaurants that will deliver to customers. Thursday through Sunday, there is also a food truck on-site, and Bourgeois says the team is working with the city to be able to expand that service at Frazier Creek. Is there anything more quintessentially South Florida than the ocean? Yet there aren’t too many restaurants right on the water, which makes the opening of Latitudes at Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa restaurant much more significant to the community.

Restaurant, a 15year staple at the resort. “While we will never forget Sinclair’s, Latitudes offers a completely new and vibrant dining experience that complements our one-of-a-kind location,” says Christine Metzger, marketing manager for Opal Collection, which owns the resort. “Latitudes features an open concept ideal for enjoying our beachfront location. Our upscale yet comfortable atmosphere and our five social and dining spaces create an intimate and inviting dining experience for every occasion.”

While locals enjoy bites at various spots on the inlet and Intracoastal, Latitudes is Jupiter’s sole restaurant set right on the Atlantic Ocean itself. In the main dining room, bartenders show off their skills from inside the glass-enclosed Spirit Room, a unique interactive feature of the space. Jupiter’s Latitudes joins a concept that is operated at four additional Opal Collection resorts: Sunset Key Cottages in Key West, Delray Sands Resort in Highland Beach, The Resort at Longboat Key Club in Longboat Key, and Wentworth by the Sea in New Hampshire. “Latitudes is inspired by our oceanfront location and love for sailing,” says Metzger. “Our goal for Latitudes was to create a space where guests could enjoy modern American coastal cuisine in a cool yet comfortable setting inspired by sailing culture. Open for breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late-night bites, the restaurant has all the must-have coastal town dishes on the menu, such as ahi tuna tacos, crab-encrusted Florida grouper, tuna poke, and grilled octopus.
