BRINGING MORE TO THE BOARDROOM Rothrock Construction builds an innovative design at Divosta Towers which captures a contemporar y twist on the ever yday office.

A

s you exit the elevators of Divosta Towers, you embrace a full glass view of Downtown at the Gardens, Palm Beach, and Jupiter Lighthouse. The boardroom is framed by Parasido marble columns that disappear into the ceiling, featuring water jet aluminum artwork that portrays the company’s operations.

The placement of the sitting area alcove is carefully carved into the lobby’s angled walls to avoid any disruption to the views.

Within the Business Lounge, the Negresco Quartz-

ite island is used for employee lunch gatherings. The ceiling is transformed with floating acoustical fractal clouds, hung at multiple heights for illumination, drawing you into a floor to ceiling glass office corridor.

Led by General Contractor Don Rothrock, Rothrock Construction was involved with the design team on several concepts throughout the project. Don has a master’s degree in Architecture and studied abroad, giving him a broader spectrum of design for his clients. “We were able to not only create a beautiful working

environment, but also capture the history of the company and the future of its growth. We showcased elements of the company through both artwork and use of materials. The office has transformed into a clean and modernized working space, while telling a personal story.”

Rothrock Construction brings another level of custom details when building for a client. They set themselves apart by being selective with projects, both commercial and residential, allowing for a more one-on-one personal approach of building.

SYLVESTER COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER: THE LEADER IN CANCER RESEARCH AND TREATMENT IN SOUTH FLORIDA

By Diana Gonzalez ylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System and the Miller School of Medicine, has been providing cutting-edge multidisciplinary cancer care to patients in South Florida for decades. Now, with new recognition as one of the top cancer centers in the country, researchers and physicians at Sylvester are committed to making more groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research and delivering the newest treatment options to patients.

Sylvester achieved National Cancer Institute designation last summer, making it the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and one of only two in the state. More importantly, this designation provides resources and momentum for continued growth that impacts patient care.

With this designation, Sylvester joins the highest echelon of cancer centers, one of a select group of 71 NCI-designated cancer centers nationwide, which includes world-renowned institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York and M.D. Anderson in Houston.

“The research we’re conducting advances global understanding of cancer, and plays an important role in serving our unique population and the greater marketplace,” said Sylvester’s director, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., who holds the Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research.

These trials help develop more treatment options and give hope to cancer patients. NCI designation provides greater access to cutting-edge therapies not available elsewhere.

As the only university-based cancer center in South Florida, patients often considered untreatable at other centers seek the unique level of expertise and experience available at Sylvester.

Vagabond Apparel Clothes for travels from a family-focused brand

O

ne of Elizabeth LeGore’s passions in life is traveling, and it’s a love she brought to Palm Beach Gardens in December with the opening of her boutique Vagabond Apparel.

The clothes at Vagabond are laid-back and beachy, with a Boho flair as many of the brands LeGore carries hail from California and Australia. She chooses items that fit a vagabond, which she describes as “being a nomad, traveling, and exploring new places and also not going with the flow.

“My goal is that when people come in here it’s a reflection of me, who I am, and my style, but also our community because our community travels,” LeGore says. “When you travel you want new outfits, and it’s a whole experience and feel. It’s our goal to help [customers] feel great about what they’re wearing.”

LeGore first opened her shop five years ago in North Palm Beach. “It was scary, and it was a lot of work, but I went for it,” she says. Over the years, however, Vagabond outgrew its location, and LeGore sought out Palm Beach Gardens as the new outpost.

“I wanted to be around more local businesses, and I chose this spot strategically,” LeGore says. “It gives you that local community feel, and I love that, and being able to partner with other local businesses is awesome.”

While Vagabond began as a women’s and men’s store, LeGore recognized the need to include more children’s wear after having a son of her own and noticing her customers were having kids as well.

“We kind of just fit it into our space at the other store, but here I wanted to [have a dedicated] kids’ section,” she explains.

While LeGore often finds herself wearing Vagabond clothing, her husband and 3-year-old son do as well.

“I love what I buy,” she says. “Myself, my husband, my son—we all wear the clothes, and it’s a representation of our family.”

As Vagabond continues in its new location, LeGore plans to partner with her neighbors as well as participate in community charity events. In December, she launched a monthly giveback where Vagabond donates a percentage of sales to a local organization. “My goal is to create an environment of support for one another,” LeGore says.

Danielle Rollins 20 things to know about the Palm Beach interior designer, lifestyle entrepreneur, and author

I

t’s said that when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. If you happen to be celebrated lifestyle entrepreneur Danielle Rollins, you would promptly ameliorate the traditional sip with ultra-premium alcohol and locally sourced citrus, serving it in a smartly garnished glass with a crisp monogrammed napkin.

You can expect nothing less than au currant cool from the Dallas-born interior designer who authored Soirée: 18 Entertaining with Style, a colorful tome on the art of entertaining, a book her friend and fellow green thumb enthusiast Oscar de la Renta suggested she pen. The legendary fashion designer first floated the idea to her at a private charity dinner she hosted in 2009 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “He turned to me and said, ‘You entertain so beautifully and effortlessly. You should write a book for the younger generation that doesn’t know these things.’”

At the time, she was navigating a messy divorce, the final chapter of a relationship irreversibly marred by physical and emotional abuse. She was also caring for her then 8-year-old daughter who had been seriously injured in a go-kart accident the previous spring. The literary project turned out to be both therapeutic and beneficent. “I’m not one of those people who can take adversity and just say, ‘Well, that’s too bad.’ I have to do something good.” It explains why she contributes a portion of each book sale to domestic violence charities.

In 2012, the same year Soirée: Entertaining with Style was published, Rollins launched her eponymous lifestyle design firm, Danielle Rollins Interiors, which she helms from her home on Palm Beach Island. Her design aesthetic 1 is elegantly uncomplicated: create beautiful spaces that allow her clients to enjoy doing the things that matter in life. Five years later, she introduced a line of curated apparel that culled inspiration from silhouettes she had previously fashioned and received raves, like the perfect white shirt, a cotton ball skirt, and a little wrap hostess dress. The sartorial line now boasts more than 42 pieces and is sold on her website.

Bon vivants will also be happy to know her latest literary work, A Home for All Seasons: Gracious Living and Stylish Entertaining, is scheduled to debut this fall. Prince of Pictures After saying goodbye to Palm Beach in 1999, H.R.H Prince Michel de Yougoslavie returned in January to the tropical expanse he called home for 15 years

A

few days before the debut of Prince Michel de Yougoslavie’s first photography exhibition in the United States, the debonair royal, comfortably ensconced in the vibrant surrounds at Coe & Co. Photography Gallery on Royal Poinciana Way, chats amicably about how a self-taught hobby evolved into an all-consuming passion for the visual arts.

While holding a successful marketing job at a Geneva-based, due-diligence company, the grandson of Italy’s last king and the last regent of Yugoslavia experienced a moment of clarity. Craving something more existential than the self-gratification he received from his work, he discovered he was searching for a lightness of being. His business coach and former Palm Beach resident, Nicole Petschek, suggested he find a hobby he could practice daily.

“I remembered thinking back to when I was young and living in Versailles,” he says.

“I would carry around a little Kodak camera and take photographs on weekends and during lunch and dinner. I was always very happy with them.”

He purchased an inexpensive camera, then spent the next five years practicing an hour each day, shooting things like doorknobs, streetlamps, and other commonplace objects and themes.

At the time, “All my friends were saying, ‘Michel, we like your photos, you should do a show,’” he says. His response was usually the same: “I would tell them I didn’t even know how to do photos and that it was private or part of my therapy.”

When his uncle in Geneva invited him to display selections of his work in a weeklong show featuring three other Italian shutterbugs, he acquiesced.

“A friend helped me pick some photos, images that mostly represented nature [including one of a live bug in a dead flower].”

When the show concluded, the prince learned he had sold 30 photographs, while the other participants had only sold one each.

Today the former real estate broker and 36

hedge fund executive, who now proudly shoots with a Leica, is rarely without his camera. When he’s not traveling around the world, he typically clocks six or seven photographic exhibitions a year and regularly gifts his works to charity, including a recent donation he made to a Palm Beach nonprofit supporting children with autism.

Here, he spills on inspirational shots, overcoming shyness, and snapping happy photos.

What do you receive from seeing life through a lens?

When I first look through my camera lens, everything is really small. Then, you transport [the images] onto your computer and they’re bigger. You print them and put them on the wall and they’re even bigger.

Seeing the finished project feels like giving birth. It makes you feel very happy at the end.

How has photography helped you personally?

When I started taking portraits, I was very shy about stopping people in the street, but I used it as an exercise to build confidence. I’ve found that most people are delighted to have their portraits done. My camera has Wi-Fi so I can send them to my phone then directly to the person via WhatsApp. Also, participating in exhibitions is very self-gratifying. It’s like unveiling and opening myself up to people at the same time.

Do you ever look to others’ photography for inspiration?

I love looking at photos, especially [those from] the old days. Right now, I’m in the gallery [Coe & Co.] looking at Steve McCurry’s “Afghan Girl” that was on the cover of National Geographic. It’s only $75,000, which makes me hope my $2,000 photo may get that someday.

Moroccan Magic A GIRLS’ ADVENTURE TO ANCIENT SPLENDOR

bn Battuta, a Berber Moroccan scholar known for his travel exploration, once said, “Traveling leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” That sentiment is exactly what my two girlfriends and I were hoping to experience during our adventure abroad to Morocco. To help ensure our travels would go smoothly, we looked to Abercrombie & Kent for their expertise.

A land of contrasts, Morocco’s magic lies in its depth of history that blends African, Berber, Arab, and European cultures. This harmonious integration is the culmination of epicurean specialties, architecture, and music spawning today’s Morocco. During our girls’ trip, we traveled to Casablanca and a few of the imperial cities of Fez, Rabat, and Marrakesh—my favorite.

The city is considered the “Pearl of the South” and once was the capital of an empire that stretched from Spain to Senegal. With its ancient medina, the old walled area of the city was fascinating. The

Exploring the souks, or marketplaces, of Marrakesh was amazing. We navigated winding, narrow streets lined with shops selling an array of goods, from jewelry and pottery to leather wares and intricate filigreed lanterns. Sights, sounds, and smells permeated the labyrinth of stalls, each filled with fresh fruits (you have to try the pomegranates!), dates, olives, and spices galore. The colors of coriander, cumin, saffron, turmeric, and cardamom pods laid out before me were mesmerizing. Harissa was the best: a savory paste of garlic, chilies, olive oil, and salt.

I was determined to continue this shopping excursion with a mission: I set my sights on searching for the perfect (and most fairly priced) Moroccan bowls to match the Mediterranean blue

It now embodies a trendy, vibrant energy, known for its art galleries, festivals, exhibitions, and famous designers who pop in for runway shows.

Incorporated into our stay in Marrakesh was a journey approximately 35 miles south on a narrow road up to the High Atlas mountains. On clear days, you can see Jebel Toubkal’s peak from the city.

The winding roads were lined with apple, walnut, and cherry trees rising upward to 5,900 feet.

We arrived at a tiny village in the Imlil Valley to visit with a local Berber family, who repeated “Marhaba!” as they invited us into their home. We sampled freshly baked Moroccan flatbread along with local honey, newly harvested walnuts, and sweetened mint tea. Giving us a glimpse into Berber life and customs, this traditional Moroccan greeting is meant to show their warm, welcoming hospitality.

From Imlil, we were transported to the world of Sir Richard Branson and his award-winning Kasbah Tamadot, a spectacular 28-suite hotel situated in the Atlas mountains. His parents found the Kasbah and dreamt of turning it into a Moroccan retreat, which Branson later purchased. It is now a part of the Eve Branson Foundation and Virgin Unite, and 98 percent of its employees are locals. Kasbah Tamadot also showcases the work of area artisans at the gift shop. There isn’t a shortage of activities either; options include mule riding, hiking up the mountains, a gorgeous pool for sunbathing, and cooking classes for creating delectable bites of local cuisine.

From there, we headed to Fez, which is considered the cultural heart of Morocco. In addition to having the University of Al-Qarawiyyin—regarded as the oldest university in the world—its ancient, ninth-century Fezel-Bali (Old Fez) has been amazingly preserved. In fact, no cars are allowed on the 9,000-plus lanes, alleyways, and souks, where many residents are craftsmen working with bronze, leather, and pottery.

We ended with Merzouga and a journey to the desert as our parting adventure. Sleeping under the stars in a Bedouin tent was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the vastness and colors of the dunes of the Saharan Desert are incomprehensible.

Camel treks are a must on the Erg Chebbi dunes. Besides the sheer fun of riding a camel, we were provided “cameleers:” bedouins in their native dress who lead visitors into the vastness of sand which seemed to go on forever. Salim, our very own cameleer, took us on a special journey.

When we arrived at the dune, he unrolled a ruby red Bedouin rug onto the sand, took what appeared to be a handful of twigs from his sack, and made a small campfire. After, he prepared the ubiquitous Moroccan sweetened tea and served it to us along with warmed walnuts and honey.

What’s most surprising in the world’s largest desert is the intense silence, which is deafening but idyllically quiet, magnifying any minute sound to serious clarity. Stargazing became our evening event—we tried to see who could find the Milky Way or spot the next shooting star for the chance of another wish. My wish was already answered. howcasing five legendary courses for the golf lover, PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens is known as South Florida’s premier golf, vacation, and spa destination. PGA National Resort recently announced it has retained Staples Golf Design to lead a reimagination of the Squire Course. As one of five distinct 18-hole courses, four of which are on property, the Squire Course was originally designed by the renowned duo of Tom and George Fazio and has not had any significant updates since opening.

ublicly owned by the Village of North Palm Beach, the North Palm Beach Country Club welcomes all locals. The clubhouse originally opened in 1963 and was the hub of social activity and important life events for generations until it was demolished in 2018. Now an elegant, new, 37,000-square-foot clubhouse has been built and features panoramic views of the golf course from the banquet room, dining area, patio, and bar. A mini-golf putting green as well as fire pits were added to the back patio in addition to a renovated pool and deck described as having “a resort feel.”

She credits her husband for finding their current digs in Ranch Colony, a luxurious, gated golf and equestrian community east of I-95 and approximately three miles west of where they were living. They purchased the 20-acre property in 2015, which, save for a garage, was empty, and decided, they would sit on it.

The tipping point for Beth came when their neighbor’s Ranch Colony property went up for sale. “It was like, ‘Okay, now we have to make big adult decisions about the future. Do we really picture ourselves here with more land?’” The answer was yes, they did.

After nearly a year of negotiating, the Asplundhs found themselves the newly minted owners of a second 20-acre estate, this one imbued with a circa-1990s house, a large pond, and enough capacity for a new sanctuary that would feature a state-of-the-art breeding program for endangered crocodiles. At press time, Kyle has already bred Chinese alligators twice in captivity.

At first, Beth debated about hiring a decorator, then conceded 58

she needed a pro to realize her dream home. “With the internet at your fingertips it feels like you can do it yourself, but as soon as I started to think about paint colors, I said, ‘Nope, I cannot.’”

They hired Harold Smith of Smith & Moore Architects in Palm Beach and JMA Interior Design principal Jackie Armour, who had come highly recommended by a tennis pal of Beth’s.

They tasked the creative duo to transform the rundown residence into a cozy setting with a modern farmhouse-chic charm.

“We’re country-ish kind of people, so we wanted a home that would fit our personalities really well,” Beth says.

Because Beth and Kyle planned to keep the property for the long haul, they wanted a master suite that would be a tranquil oasis and act as an escape for when guests slept over.

Relocating the first-floor master bedroom upstairs and removing the wall separating the new master from a guest room provided additional square footage for a walk-in closet and a luxurious en suite bathroom covered top-to-toe in shell stone.

The ceiling’s soaring effect was achieved by partially elevating the roof and building out the northern wall to accommodate a covered lanai overlooking the pool.

For the overall design playbook, Jackie mixed rustic furnishings and accoutrements with hues and textures similar to those found at Yosemite, a national park she had recently visited that left a lasting impression.

Touring the Asplundhs’ residence for the first time, she remembers, “I just couldn’t stop taking pictures of all the color combinations. When you look at the stone from the mountains then at the pebbles in the sand by the trees on their property, it’s almost visually overwhelming.”

Jackie purposely kept the main rooms aesthetically neutral. In the master bedroom, low-profile furnishings, like a stump table and a pair of Lee Industry chairs, offer clear sightlines of the rural and soothing landscape. A handmade rug, one of many plucked from a prominent rug store Kyle’s late-sister-in-law had owned, warms the floor while honoring her memory. Additional floor coverings balance out the copious wood tones and weave in more color and texture.

A custom, 8-foot-wide bed, similar to one the couple slept in during a trip to Montana, graces the western wall.

From the horizontal perch, the couple can catch panoramas of the verdant preserves and local wildlife such as wild hogs that roam freely around the property.

“There are all these beautiful oak trees you can see from the window,” Jackie says. “You almost feel like you’re in a treehouse.”

Two guest bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bathroom hold court on the opposite end. A spiral staircase leads upstairs to a bonus room in the attic that Kyle’s nieces and nephews use as a private retreat while grown-ups have the rest of the house to spread out.

A soothing palette of taupe, cream, gray, and white tones, coupled with wide-plank hardwood floors, ramp up ocular interest and unite the downstairs living spaces, which include a home office and a soundproofed entertainment room separated by a see-through, saltwater fish tank.

room as does a wraparound bookshelf the designer conceived in a dark stain.

Elegance and a nod to lodge life take center stage with heavy, stone-topped tables and comfortable leather chairs reminiscent of the traditional wing variety seated beneath a pecky cypress ceiling stained a soft taupe. Then there’s the mash-up of metals, like iron lamps and heavily textured couches covered in oatmeal Lee Joffa linen and embellished with nailheads the designer hammered herself. “When you look at the overall scale of the room, every detail helps make more sense of the space,” Jackie says.

In the family room, a moose head wall accessory, which came with the property, offers silent assessment of everyone who enters.

A bank of sliding glass doors opposite the taxidermy leads out to the sun-dappled patio. Ledge stone used to accent the base of the home’s exterior also covers a wall tricked up with an 85-inch flat screen television and a fireplace. Original cabinetry was refaced and accessorized with bright crocodile watercolors and vintage photos of Alligator Joe in Palm Beach.

The room’s oversized proportions at first proved a conundrum Jackie solved by creating two distinct seating areas. In front of the television, she positioned a large sectional—perfect for long game day afternoons or a quiet movie night—and placed a set of wingback loungers near the fireplace that guests could use for a fireside chat.

Jackie didn’t fuss with the kitchen’s flow. Instead, she refinished the cabinetry in a creamy dove white hue, replaced the hardware, and flowed in an island, quartz countertops, and a subway tile backsplash.

Situated between the kitchen and family room, a breakfast wing with windows on three sides pulls in beryl hues from the pond and native flora. Classic bamboo blinds were selected, in addition to an expansive table ideal for an impromptu brunch or savoring a second cup of coffee.

In the dining room, dark paneling, similar to the deep hue in the living room, brings fresh contrast and an added layer of depth.

ackie Armour launched her eponymous, Jupiter-based company, JMA Interior Design, in 1996. Since then, she’s designed some of the most eye-pleasing residences and yachts in the country and on the high seas. Here, she dishes on design trends, DIYs, and upping a room’s “wow factor.”

Her design style I like a lot of pattern and color and mixing antique and modern pieces. I don’t mind mixing metal colors, like brass and polished nickel. I think when you start to match things too much, though, it just becomes very staid and flat looking.

Telling a home’s story through design I’ll bring in family memorabilia or heirlooms that have been passed down. If we don’t have that, we come up with our version. It requires getting in touch with what you’re really about, which is sometimes the hardest part—that deep dive.

Home design shows: love or loathe They’re wonderful because they’ve opened up a new arena for people to understand interior design and what we do. The bad part is that, on television, they’re working with very unrealistic numbers and time frames. So, people think, “Wow, we can do all this stuff to our house,” when the reality is they really can’t because they have misinformation.

Great design needn’t reflect your reality I had a client whose house had a very global feel and was heavily textured—no head mounts just tons of African textiles and some art. It looked like she’d been on an African safari when she had never even been to Africa before.

Favorite (and least favorite) current trends Shiplap, I love. I wish the all-white kitchen would go away. We [designers] are so tired of them.

The entire project, lengthened by add-on projects and some structural delays, took nearly two years to complete, but the Asplundhs just chalked it up to experience.

When they weren’t tending to their other businesses (Kyle also owns Hydra Motor Works, a high-performance automotive shop in West Palm Beach and recently acquired a resort on South Bimini), the couple would stop by the work site regularly, whether for a meeting with their contractor, Frank Tricarico of Metz Construction, or simply to observe the work in progress.

For Beth, who enjoys trolling real estate online and watching home design shows like Fixer Upper, the experience left her with plenty to contemplate. “I was really happy when it was done, but I learned a lot and I was like, ‘I kind of want to keep doing this!’ It was so much fun.”

As for the taxidermy moose head, the couple’s keeping it. “He’s a great mascot with a friendly face,” Beth says, smiling. “And although he’s not native to Florida, he still represents our love for wildlife.”

The sign of a good interior designer In my world, if you’re not super organized and tech-savvy, you’re not going to thrive. If I’m on a job site and [in need of] a plumbing spec or a drawing, I can easily access it from the Dropbox app on my phone. Many people are still dealing with paper, so if they forget to bring something to the job, it’s time and money wasted for the homeowner.

Simple ways to “wow up” a room Spray paint. I once had a client who didn’t have a big budget but wanted the house to look relevant. We took all the furniture outside and sprayed it white. The place looked amazing.

DIY tip from the top Go to the grocery store and buy one of those flower bunches for $3.50. Get a small, square glass vase from a craft store, like Michaels. Cut the flowers short and put them in the vase with water and pebbles or sea glass at the bottom.

It’s an instant floral arrangement for under $10 that looks professionally designed.

hen a husband and wife work together professionally, it can be both satisfying and challenging. For interior designer Eloise Kubli and her husband, Arthur, a general contractor, the roles are clearly defined. “When it’s a design project, Eloise is the conductor,” Arthur says. “She is in charge. She tells us what to do, and my team and I do it.”

Kubli, who—with her husband—owns Collective Construction and Design in Plantation, demonstrated her talent for orchestrating a project when the two worked together on a three-story Sailfish Point oceanfront mansion in Stuart. The complete renovation involved smart-home wiring, impact-resistant windows and doors, and a new, high-profile barrel tile roof and copper flashing as well as reconfiguring interior layouts to open living spaces and emphasize views. She kept the beige shell stone flooring in the main living areas and some of the molding. “The home was very traditional and architecturally chopped up,” Kubli says. “But they wanted a combination of contemporary and traditional elements.”

The homeowners, a businessman in the mortgage industry and his wife, are avid boaters and love the beach. They also enjoy golfing, so the oceanfront property in a community with a Jack Nicklaus course was a perfect fit. With four kids in college and friends who visit, the couple’s 10,000-square-foot home with three bedrooms and five baths, plus a separate guest house, has become a gathering spot.

LIVING ROOM A bold graphic painting adds a splash of color to the living room’s muted color palette. Gray panels with white embroidery frame the windows, and a gray and blue wool area rug is soft underfoot. A baby grand piano near one of the glass doors creates a focal point, and a tête-à-tête takes the place of a typical sofa. “The living room is long and narrow, so I felt it was important to have a sofa that’s open from both back and front to create a more approachable look,” Kubli says.

upholstered in tufted gray cotton with silver striations, while ice blue chenille on two wing chairs adds texture. Smokey stone crowns a cocktail table with a brass and stainless base.

DINING ROOM In the dining room, walls gleam with blue LusterStone. “I used a different color to help define the dining room,” Kubli says. “I also wanted to give it more depth and shine.” A painting in the same style as the one in the living room, as well as similar embroidered window panels, create continuity. The maple table has pyramid corner detailing; suspended above is a chandelier of pillow-shaped fused glass, hand laid in a cobblestone effect.

KITCHEN A stunning backsplash and countertops of blue and green quartzite slabs recall colors of the sea in the kitchen, while pure white cabinets create a clean, fresh look. Illuminating the island are pendants made with horizontal layers of Murano glass.

“They’re not perfectly shaped, so they have an organic look, and they work together with the chandelier in the dining room,” Kubli says.

FAMILY ROOM In the home’s former layout, the TV sat against the windows because it was the only location free from glare. To solve the problem of the screen interrupting the magnificent ocean view, motorized shades and furnishings were arranged in a more stylish configuration. A wall unit with a gray metallic finish adjacent to the windows now holds the TV and also provides storage. The unit, which floats above the floor and is illuminated from underneath, complements the rift-cut oak and iron cocktail table and gray leather sofas. Two side chairs upholstered in blue and gray chenille also have rift-cut oak frames. Between the chairs is a brass-based table with a quartzite top. A platinum and gray shag rug with textured variations grounds the furnishings.

MASTER SUITE A 36-foot-high oculus with a circle of windows visible to the outside is a dramatic entry to the master suite. LED rope illumination around the perimeter of the existing wood-paneled ceiling adds further drama, and suspended from the center is a

spiral-shaped chandelier finished with silver leaf and a cylinder of crystals sparkling within. “It’s very simple and contemporary but still dramatic,” Kubli says.

Changing the shape of a wall with awkward angles in the master bedroom simplified the floor plan and opened the stunning ocean views.

Shimmering white stacked quartzite clads a feature wall that houses a ribbon fireplace and a TV screen; the rest of the walls in the master suite are finished with white LusterStone. The designer removed the coffered ceiling, creating detail instead with rectangles of wood molding that surround a large circular crystal chandelier. A richly textured white, blue, and gray rug softens high-gloss walnut flooring.

The bed’s head and footboards, curved to replicate the shape of ocean waves, have gray maple frames with eggshell leather insets. A white linen duvet and shams with gray embroidery dress the bed. Swivel chairs upholstered in blue chenille with silver threads and a gold leaf table with a mirrored top and bottom form a seating area.

The master suite is complete with two separate baths. The husband prefers to have his clothes displayed openly, so Kubli designed a closet with no doors. A gray maple storage island is topped with dark gray Caesarstone; above it hangs a chandelier with a matte black finish and rough-cut crystals. In the wife’s bath, Kubli opened the views by replacing mullioned windows with sheets of clear glass.

Floors in both areas are white marble; countertops are white Caesarstone.

PATIO The designer paneled the loggia’s plain cement ceiling, as well as a cement bar, with cypress, but kept the bar’s shell stone top. In front of the pool, she replaced glass blocks with clear glass; bar stool cushions match the color of the water.

“The owners love the changes,” Kubli says.

“Their family and friends love them too, and that makes me happy. We brought today’s styling to a home that makes you feel like part of the sea.”

Vintage Wine and Charcuterie Unwind at a cozy wine bar in Tequesta

fter returning home from a long day of work or errands on Friday and Saturday nights, Laura and David Marquez would put together a charcuterie platter to share, open a good bottle of wine, and sit outside to talk. This relaxing routine later sparked the idea to open Vintage Wine and Charcuterie in Tequesta, which offers a homey place for guests to enjoy each other’s company.

“It’s a second home to just grab a nice glass of wine, some appetizers, and enjoy yourself for a little while,” Laura says.

Walking through Vintage, that “homey” feeling is immediate: Mismatched chairs and sofas fill the floor while eclectic art pieces dot the walls and tabletops. While David chose most of the art himself, some pieces were gifted to the couple from customers.

“We’ve got a different vibe here,” David says. “You aren’t going to find another place like this anywhere.”

The couple first met while working at the same restaurant. They then started their entrepreneurial business together

with a food truck, Xtreme Risotto Fusion, seven years ago while living in Miami, and have since relocated to Palm Beach Gardens.

“What we like in Tequesta is the support for the small businesses,” Laura says about their decision on where to open the brick-and-mortar location. “That’s something you don’t find in a lot of areas.”

Inside, guests often pick their seats carefully after surveying the variety of cozy cushions.

“The ones who come constantly already know their spot,” Laura says. “New customers tend to wander around.” After picking the perfect perch, patrons can head to the bar to sample some wine.

Eight wines are always available to try, with one being swapped for something new every week. Vintage is also stocked with Florida beers in cans and on draft, including selections from Tequesta Brewing Co., Funky Buddha Brewery, and Wynwood Brewing Company.

Laura notes that most of the beers they provide come from breweries Prosciutto and arugala flatbread they’ve been to before and whose product they enjoy.

When they opened, Laura and David didn’t want Vintage to be solely for those 18 or 21 years and older. “It’s just the three of us—my husband, my daughter, and me—so wherever we go, she goes,” Laura says. “We’re family, and this is a family place.” The couple stocks the wine bar with apple juice and a vintage Nintendo as well, so parents can enjoy themselves while their kids play.

For a pre-dinner snack or peckish post-meal, patrons can partake in the second half of Vintage’s namesake: charcuterie.

The cheese and meat selection at Vintage changes as the couple finds new varieties to try. Boards are built with two, four, or six meats and cheeses chosen by the guests. Each board also comes with jelly or a preserve, a small jar of honey, olives, and tiny toasts.

While the wine and charcuterie are available every day Vintage is open, the best time to visit is on the weekend. Along with local musicians on Fridays and Saturdays, Laura and David also park their food truck outside Vintage’s window, allowing patrons to order small plates from their changing menu.

The biggest misconception about fighting in the UFC is: big muscles matter.

We often equate size, strength, and muscle mass to dominance, which in fighting couldn’t be further from the truth. Technique, tactics, and speed are far more important. That and the belief that MMA is barbaric.

To the untrained eye it may seem so, but the techniques are extremely complex. While it may look wild and spastic, the highest-level competitors in fighting are playing full-contact chess.

The celebrities I was most surprised to learn were fans of mine are: Actress Laura Prepon (Orange is the New Black, That ’70s Show) watched me do stand-up comedy at the Laugh Factory in L.A. during a shoot for our reality TV show Dana White Lookin’ for a Fight. I was stoked she knew who I was from my fighting days. Also Herschel Walker, who was just as excited to meet me as I was to meet him. And I’d say the legendary actor Mickey Rourke, who I met at a fight in L.A. recently. He knew exactly who I was. I still can’t believe it.

Something I learned about myself as I made the transition from professional fighter to professional coach was: I’m a much better coach than I was a fighter. Fighters today aren’t coached properly, but it was much worse back in my day. With a more wholesome training approach encompassing mind, body, and spirit, I would have become a world champion.

Developing my craft in improv comedy and acting has provided me: a creative outlet to express my artistic prowess. As a fighter, I always considered myself an artist. When I retired from competition, I channeled that energy into theater and film. Fighters who come out of retirement to fight again often do so because they have nothing to fill that void in their soul.

I hope people will realize my career, and more importantly, my life was truly all about: giving. As an entertainer, I try to give people a good time. As a coach, I try to give my fighters a career. As a human being, I give kindness and hope to everyone, hoping that they will do the same.
