My favorite thing about Jupiter is the family environment. It has a surprisingly smalltown feel close to big cities and provides access to my favorite outdoor activities, including golf and boating. There is no other city like Jupiter, and I am humbled to be serving our community.

How do you measure success?

Success is measured by how many patients’ lives I can impact daily, either through standard noninvasive medical care or surgical correction of any underlying deformities acute or chronic.

What is your passion?

My passion is providing the best healthcare that I possibly can by implementing the newest treatments and technologies. Currently, we have an excellent team that performs laser therapies for the foot and ankle along with regenerative medicine to optimize overall foot and ankle lower extremity function.

What do you do to stay motivated?

What keeps me motivated is knowing how I am making a difference on a day-to-day basis with my patients. I strongly encourage patients to do daily activities that contribute to their mental wellbeing and overall health. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends.

What conditions are typically treated in your practice?

Heel pain, ankle replacements, bunions, sports injuries, foot and ankle trauma, fungal nail infections and treatment of varicose veins of the leg.

What are the current treatments for patients living with heel pain?

Shockwave Therapy, Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy and Radiofrequency Therapy.

How often does your practice perform procedures in ambulatory surgery center setting?

We perform 90% of my procedures in an ambulatory surgery setting. The only procedures that we perform in a hospital setting are major reconstructive surgeries or procedures on patients with restrictive co-morbidities, such as obesity.

What role do PRP injections play in foot and ankle surgery?

We have done many PRP injections in our practice.

These injections mainly play a role in the regeneration of soft tissue. After three to six months, the human body will decrease the inflammatory healing process.

In patients with a chronic injury, one of the best options is to increase blood supply to the area. We have had very positive results with PRP injections.

In the ASC setting, we have used PRP injections to augment many of our soft tissue procedures, such as ligament repair. We are also using these injections to promote bone healing. In the surgical setting, we have seen the injections lead to quicker recovery times.

Editor’s note

Unbreakable bonds

I

t was such a joy putting together our family-themed October issue. I absolutely love hearing about the intricacies of different families, watching how family members interact with one another, and just feeling the overwhelming love they share. Editing this issue sent me on a trip down memory lane, thinking about how lucky I am to have been born into the family I have. We’re far from perfect (who is?), and each of us has our flaws. But one thing I’ve never doubted even for a moment is how much we all love each other. Incredibly lucky, indeed.

My sister, Laura, and I would often bicker when we were growing up (unless we were playing Barbies, at which time there was always an automatic temporary truce). But today, she’s the first person I call when I really need to talk to someone. Still, I couldn’t imagine having spent our childhood doing something like competing as teammates in professional sports—like Stuart siblings Audrey and Peter Foley do. The teens sail competitively together all over the world and clearly have great admiration for one another.

Our cover story, “Mom and Me,” honors the special bond between mothers and daughters, something I can completely relate to as my mom and I were incredibly close. For the story (page 32), we photographed a few local moms and their children—including cover models Jessica Namath and her beautiful daughter, Jemma—in matching fashions they styled themselves. It was so cool to see how proud these kids were to mimic their moms’ vibes!

My mom posing next to I can’t say I recall my mom and me ever “twinning,” but she her ’68 Mustang definitely inspired me to always be true to myself and to be confident in my own independent style (one of the many incredible things she passed on to me).

That’s just a small taste of what’s inside....We also showcase gourmet kids’ meals by local chefs in “Liven Up Your Lunch Box!” (page 40), offer a few ideas for a fun at-home family spa day (page 28), and so much more. T

he writer F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” While it might not exactly get “crisp” around these parts, there is still a discerning change in both air and attitude after the summer humidity starts to ease up. We look forward to cooler weather, fall wardrobe changes, pumpkin lattes, the social season, and the holidays.

I always enjoy this time of year, when season starts and our social circles rejoin after a long summer of vacations. It’s like seeing a long-lost friend after many months apart. For our local nonprofits, it’s time to make hay while the sun shines and everyone is in town.

They rely on this charitable season to carry them through the year and fulfill their fundraising objectives. Of course, this season will still be a bit different, but hopefully not as bad as last year. With more people vaccinated, and the Delta spike subsiding, we eagerly look forward to resuming our social agendas.

That said, at the time of writing this letter, several charities—some of which may be featured in this issue’s Charity Datebook—have canceled their fall events, so please check in with the organizations to find out whether their events are still on. Our Charity Datebook is a service to our readers and the organizations that are vital to our community. The compilation of worthy charities and their fundraising events serves as a resource for longtime residents and newcomers alike to help align their interests and affinities with the charities of their choice, attend their events, and give generously. With events being canceled or postponed, please consider giving a direct monetary donation to help them continue their missions. I believe we all have a moral obligation to do what we can and serve where we can. Through acts of service, we get more than we give in return.

owntown Palm Beach Gardens is about to look a whole lot prettier, thanks to Emmanuel Gonzales. The Lake Worth artist was chosen out of more than 30 applicants to transform the premier retail destination into a work of art as part of its current renovation. “I am just honored I was picked to create these displays,” says Gonzales, whose art panel installation includes illustrations of Florida’s flora and fauna such as flamingos, oranges, and various bird species (pictured here).

The artwork will be on view for a year before the next art competition. Recently, Gonzales has been live-painting at venues across South Florida, including the W Fort Lauderdale and the stage at Rosemary Square, and he debuted a solo show at Howley’s in West Palm Beach. PGA National Resort & Spa recently unveiled The Staple Course, in honor of golf course architect Andy Staples, and The Match Course, which debuted in September. Both layouts are part of the resort’s ongoing $100 million capital revitalization. “The thought process behind both projects was to add a greater element of fun to the golf experience at PGA National,” says Director of Golf Jane Broderick. “The addition of The Staple Course not only adds a new golf experience, but it truly is a new social venue as well.” Chosen for his creativity and sensitivity to the environment, Staples designed a figure-eight layout that creates a natural gathering spot with picnic benches and Adirondack chairs sprinkled throughout the property. Broderick says the course appeals to all levels: “Beginners find it fun and less intimidating, while better golfers can use it to hone their short game skills.” She notes that the key to playing the course is to bring three clubs and your putter. There are no set tees, in the traditional sense, and the course challenges your creativity in shotmaking. The Match Course is “where the tradition of the game will define the future of the sport,” says Broderick. In place of the industry norm of multiple sets of specific tees on each hole, PGA is marking maximum and minimum yardages, allowing players to start anywhere in between. Ever find yourself eyeing a certain novel but not sure whether it’s worth the time? Jupiter resident Hannah Sims has you covered with Hush Reading. She launched the Instagram book review account to keep herself busy during the COVID lockdown, Hannah Sims and it has since blossomed into a growing community with more than 8,000 followers. She posts weekly, detailing various genres of books she has read and offering succinct, honest reviews. The 26-year-old—whose older sister, Jena, is engaged to golfer Brooks Koepka—says creating the account was an obvious pandemic remedy that followed her mom’s advice: “If you learn to love to read, you will never be bored.” Sims was a literature major in college and says she has always felt at home in the library and understands the obstacles aspiring readers face. “There are so many different genres out there, you just have to find the right one for you,” she advises. Stop by JoJo’s Farmers Market for all sorts of locally sourced goods and get in a workout at the same time

here’s a new spot in town to peruse local goods: JoJo’s Farmers Market at Carlin Park in Jupiter. Founder Riley Burns created a new community gathering place out of a desire to help others. In 2006, her mother, Joanna, passed away from lung cancer, which prompted Burns to pursue pre-med at Florida Atlantic University. She later decided that Western medicine wasn’t her calling and began adopting a holistic lifestyle. “I found myself in a little bit of a crisis, and that’s when I became a yoga teacher and found that path of healing for myself,” says the 23-year-old, who is also a certified fitness manager at

Orangetheory and a hot vinyasa yoga instructor. Burns works alongside friend Aliza Russell to host the monthly green markets, which will be ongoing throughout the year. Guests can expect to meet upward of 75 vendors offering everything from CBD tinctures to all-natural cleaning products to homegrown produce.

The market begins at 9 a.m. and includes by-donation boot camp and yoga classes.

Sailing Siblings STUART TEENS PETER AND AUDREY FOLEY SHARE A PASSION FOR SAILING COMPETITIVELY ALL AROUND THE WORLD—TOGETHER eing born in Miami’s Mercy Hospital overlooking Biscayne Bay may have given the Foley siblings an affinity for the water. But years later, a two-week summer camp at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo stimulated their interest in sailing and, soon after, competing.

“I love the competitiveness of sailing,” says Peter, 18, who is lauded for his intellect, precision, strategy, speed, and tactics on the water. “I am a natural. I build off of talent, and I love sailing. When it’s cold and windy, I go out.”

His younger sister Audrey, 15, is fearless on windy seas and shares the same passion as her brother. “Sailing makes me feel independent, and competing allows me to focus all of my interests at once,” she says. “People are amazed that I am young and brave and sail in gnarly winds and storms. But I love it!”

Today, the Stuart-based Pine School students spend as much time as possible sailing around the world as a team tackling competitive events. They often race together as members of the United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA); since 2015, they have qualified as members and competed all over the world, including places like Spain, Belgium, and Bermuda.

The Foley siblings have attended more than 75 regattas in 30 countries on five continents and have also won a few championships, including the 2019 C420 Junior Olympic Sailing Festival in Jensen Beach and Peter’s first-place win in the 2018 International Optimist Regatta in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. They somehow manage to balance their sailing competitions with various high school activities. “We intend to keep improving our sailing, doing schoolwork, and entering competitions when we are on break,” says Peter, who notes that they finished sixth in the i420 North American Championship Regatta in Miami last year and, this past July, competed in the 420 World Championships in San Remo, Italy, for the very first time.

The first-generation sailors have lived all over Florida and in Chicago. Two years ago, after their father, a financial adviser, opened an office in Palm Beach Gardens, the

family—including their mom, who manages their sailing careers—bought a home in Stuart. Not far from their dad’s work, it is also close to the U.S. Sailing Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach. “We both like the peacefulness of Martin County, and in addition to the Sailing Center competitions, we sail our family’s armada of boats around here,” says Peter.

Over the years, the duo has sailed boats like the I420, C420, HS420, Snipe, Laser, 29er, RS Feva, RS Venture, Hobie Cat, and Sunfish. They have also trained a great deal on the family’s 8-foot Optimist.

of the time, there are natural spills and chills during the excitement of competition. “If one of us fails to do something [right], we get upset with each other,” says Peter. “It’s hard not to fight, but we’re always civil.” Audrey agrees: “Things happen so fast when we’re sailing, it’s tough to keep up the pace. But when we are out there, we are partners.”

The Foleys are considered by their peers to be among the best youth sailors in North America. They started their careers as preteens, sailing in the big U.S. regattas like Newport, Rhode Island; Marina del Rey, California; and Lake Forest, Illinois.

From there, they tackled international waters, where they were immersed in new cultures and met diverse people who have since become friends. “Traveling has given us new perspectives and experiences,” says Audrey, who headed to Ireland in August to race in the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Youth World Championships after finishing up the Worlds in Italy. “We have bonded with so many different people around the world.

I see them every year and now realize that the world is a small place.”

Locally, both Foleys will continue to participate in varsity sailing as part of their Pine

School activities. Peter won Pine’s Male Athlete of the Year Award for 2020-2021 (he also plays tennis, golf, and basketball).

Audrey, who likes to play golf and paint when she’s not sailing, was honored at Pine with a 2021 Sportsmanship Award.

In coming months, the siblings will continue pursuing their passion for competitive sailing. Wherever their dreams may take them, both intend to utilize the memories they make along the way to become better human beings. As Peter so beautifully puts it: “The lessons I have learned in sailing will continue to guide me to be the best person I can.” ❖

THE BENEFITS This trio of powerful pantry staples coats tresses with moisturizing protection to help mend split ends and up the shine factor.

Ingredients 1 avocado, pitted and scooped 1 tbsp. raw honey Preparation In a bowl, mash together the avocado and honey to form a paste. Spread the mixture all over the face and allow to sit for 20 minutes.

SPA SPRITZER [serves 6] Ingredients 32 oz. sparkling water or seltzer 16 oz. Ocean Spray Pink Cranberry Passion Fruit juice drink 1/2 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries 1 tbsp. lime juice 1/2 fresh lime, sliced 1/4¼- inch thick to garnish Preparation Pour sparkling water (or seltzer) and juice into a large drink container. Stir gently to combine. In separate glasses, add frozen mixed berries and ice. Pour juice and sparkling water mixture evenly into each glass. Top with lime juice and garnish edge of glass with a slice of fresh lime. ❖

ince opening its doors in late 2020, the White Elephant Palm Beach has become a modern classic. It’s not because of its hip vibe or design-forward aesthetic, but rather because it honors a significant part of Palm Beach heritage even as it reimagines it for a new era.

Before it was acquired by New England Development, the 1924-built property— originally a landmark hotel servicing Colonel E.R. Bradley’s gambling casino—was an aging architectural gem. NED chairman (and part-time Palm Beacher) Stephen Karp saw potential in its terraces, arcades, and outdoor staircases and immediately envisioned a sister hotel to NED’s White Elephant Nantucket. Elkus Manfredi Architects, specialists in restoring historic

properties, transformed the original Mediterranean Revival structure into a 32-key boutique hotel with a residential feeling, down to the thoughtfully curated art.

Although the architecture is classic, it feels anything but dated thanks to a host of contemporary counterpoints. Elevated materials like metals, Carrara marble, and hardwood floors are interpreted with a fresh eye. Furnishings are sleek and modern. The highlight is the art collection, consisting of 120 original pieces of pop and modern art. The most monumental, a 7-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe artist Fredrick Prescott, greets guests outside the main entry. In the lobby, a 54inch round acrylic painting by Orit Fuchs commands attention and draws the eye to the rest of the collection, which includes works by Japanese-American painter Kenzo Okada, New York artist Donald Baechler, legendary painter Robert Rauschenberg, and others. Of note are the powder room sketches by Doodle Boy, a 10-year-old British artist who created the

drawings with marker, incorporating a hidden elephant in each.

The four-story hotel is arranged around a courtyard that houses the swimming pool and outdoor seating for the signature restaurant, LoLa 41. This is the heart of the property, and it buzzes with energy, especially at night when the dim lights create a magical atmosphere. Although the hotel is steps away from Royal Poinciana Way—the town’s original Main Street—the courtyard feels secluded thanks to clever landscaping and an eye-popping design that turns the focus inward.

Rooms and suites range in size from 510 to 3,000 square feet and are so tastefully appointed that you feel more like a guest in a private home. The most special spaces are the two penthouse suites, scaled for gracious entertaining or multigenerational gatherings. The terraces alone measure up to 1,200 square feet. From that aerie, the view encompasses the lush expanses of Bradley Park and Palm Beach’s famous terra-cotta-tiled rooftops. In all of Palm

Beach, there is not a better venue than the Park Suite terrace for a private dinner under the stars.

When it’s time to step out, the White Elephant offers complimentary use of bicycles or chauffeured rides in BMW 7-Series sedans. Either is a good way to explore the recently reinvigorated Royal Poinciana Way and its charming businesses.

orn in New York City but raised primarily in Jupiter (and having also spent time in Los Angeles during her high school years), Jessica Namath rocks a style that is unpredictable and diverse, a reflection of the different places she has lived and the looks that have inspired her during her travels.

“My style can range from classic to bohemian depending on my mood and the occasion,” she says. “One day, I might be channeling the city in head-to-toe black, and the next you’ll find me barefoot in a tie-dye shirt and shorts.” A photographer and environmental activist who currently serves on the Village of Tequesta’s Environmental Advisory Committee, Namath is dedicated to preserving the town she grew up in for future generations. “I’m an advocate for the water, natural areas, and native species that I strongly feel must be protected,” says the Tequesta resident. “I’m also involved in our family businesses and curated the art and historical decor for Charlie and Joe’s at Love Street, which aligns with my passion for historical preservation.” For this photo shoot, Namath chose to dress herself and her daughter, Jemma, in clothing and jewelry by another Jupiter native, Brooke Hartman, owner and designer of Sea Lustre. Says Namath: “I try to shop locally and sustainably whenever possible, supporting companies that do good and care about the environment and their effect on it.”

alm Beach Gardens resident Emily Pantelides—owner of Pantelides PR & Consulting and a CBS12 news host—has loved fashion for as long as she can remember. She says it was her mother who served as her inspiration. “She wore these clear slippers covered in white feathers around the house, then would turn around and put on a gold lamé skirt for dinner,” recalls Pantelides. “I wanted to be just like her, and I still do. I think her fashion gene got passed down to me.” And now that passion for fashion is being passed down to her own young daughter, 4-year-old Alexandra. “When I was Alexandra’s age, all I used to do was go in my mom’s closet and try on her clothes and shoes,” she says. “Now it’s payback time because I have a little mini-me in Alexandra. She’s always in my closet taking anything that sparkles and honestly can walk better in my heels than I can!” Pantelides is all about high fashion (note the couture Gucci glam she put together for this photo shoot) and considers herself a risk-taker when it comes to style. “I love trends, and I love to find ways to incorporate runway looks into my day-to-day attire,” she says. “My creative outlet is fashion; I can’t get enough. During Fashion Week, I gobble up runway looks like it’s my job, and I’m on a first-name basis with the people at Net-a-Porter.” Locally, she says she finds great high-end looks at her friend’s store, Jennifer’s Designer Exchange in Palm Beach Gardens.

upiter native Dr. Jeanmarie Connor, who co-owns Premier Pediatrics as well as Scarology, is someone who loves living in Florida and being on the water and has a naturally optimistic sensibility. One of her mottoes? “If you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine.” Those traits are reflected in her fashion choices. “You can usually find me in boating or loungewear, or anything bright and nautical,” she says. “For me, fashion is about more than getting dressed—it is an opportunity to show my optimistic sense through my style.” Dr. Connor loves to shop locally (favorite boutiques include Blueline Surf & Paddle Co., Vagabond, Sea Lustre, and Lilly Pulitzer) and says she and her daughter, Caroline, enjoy putting together coordinated looks. The Tea Whisperer

F

rom the time Nella Fusco was 9 years old, she had stomach issues. Always either diagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), her ailment caused her to spend years in and out of the hospital, never fully understanding the underlying root of her problems.

Nearly 13 years later, a friend and health coach introduced her to kombucha. Every day, Fusco would drink 16 ounces of the fermented, lightly effervescent tea, and within a week, she noticed a colossal difference. Her GERD went away, and the IBS settled down. “It was the pinnacle of when I realized what fermented foods could do,” Fusco, 34, says of the beverage that changed her life.

As the owner of Whispering Oak, a Fort Pierce–based kombucha company, Fusco is now changing the lives of others as well. “Figuring out how to make the best product that actually helps people without jumping on a trend that’s really big right now is what’s most important to me,” she says.

Part of being the best has to do with her brewing process.

While kombucha is normally brewed in stainless steel vessels or glass, Fusco brews hers in American oak barrels. “Microbes and bacteria love porous wood,” she says of the two most essential

components in kombucha. “They flourish because there’s constant air flow, so it creates this rich environment for the microbes and bacteria to have this beautiful community.”

Recognizing that the word “bacteria” doesn’t necessarily bring with it a positive connotation, Fusco explains that the human body has nearly 40 trillion microbes. When those microbes begin to deplete, bad bacteria will grow and stomach ailments can arise. “A huge portion of our immune system starts in the stomach,” she says.

A one-woman operation, Fusco brews 20 to 50 gallons of kombucha in eight oak barrels for about 30 days. She makes the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY), which is central to preparing kombucha. A pellicle that grows in harmony on the top of every fermentation barrel, the SCOBY feeds off of the sugar and tannins from the tea. Fusco flavors each batch with seasonal fruits, roots, and vegetables and

uses a pump, the closest thing to a machine she uses, to transfer the kombucha to the kegs. The end product is handmade, organic, and a perfect balance of sweet and sour, just as Fusco says kombucha ought to be. The beverages can be found in health food stores like HHH Organics in Stuart and Peggy’s Natural Foods in Hobe Sound, as well as at local markets like Market on

Main in Stuart, where Fusco can be found every Sunday.

The mom of a 6-year-old son, Zion, Fusco says it’s her mission to make a delicious product that helps families the same way it helped her. “I did this because of what it did for me, because I knew it was working for me,” she says. “And I know it’s going to work for everybody else too.” whisperingoakkombucha.com

The Chainsaw Master

D

eep in the Florida swamps, where the murky water is as still as the alligators that skulk beneath it, Scotty McAllister is on a mission. In a small boat with a winch in tow, he navigates through low tide in search of driftwood. For most, the fallen cypress and cedar trees often found in the swamps are useless. But for McAllister, they are the cornerstone of his work.

For 35 years, 57-year-old McAllister has made his living sculpting aquatic and land animals. With a chainsaw and grinder—tools that once covered his arms in scars—he has created sailfish, manatees, dolphins, bears, giraffes, pelicans, and eagles. For the last 10 years, however, his area of expertise has evolved; he now carves bird and fish heads on the ends of the wood he collects along the riverbanks of Florida.

Traveling to places like St. John’s River and Cypress Springs, McAllister gathers logs in their natural state. Whether they’re clad in barnacles, have roots that jaggedly branch out, or are stained with a reddish hue from Mother Nature’s touch, he leaves them virtually intact, carving on one side. “Sometimes I’ll twist the log around 100 times before I see the fish,” says McAllister. “I see a fish in almost everything now.”

He ventures into swamps to procure material that cannot be found on the beach— material that has been petrified after years of baking in the sun, is impenetrable from bugs and rot, and does not crack. “It’s all about the wood,” he says. “Even my dog’s name is Woody.”

A Michigan native, McAllister moved to Jensen Beach in the late 1980s. He was selling sunglasses along the Jensen Beach Causeway when he met a guy named Gary Vaughn, who was carving animals. He paid Vaughn $1,000 to teach him his craft, and together they began making creations out of cypress and cedar logs. As he gained momentum, McAllister started selling his goods from Key West up to northern Maine and showed his art in state fairs and renowned art shows, often winning first place.

Today, McAllister is semi-retired. His kids are grown, and he and his girlfriend are enjoying life on the river in Fort Pierce. But you can still find his pieces at local South Florida markets, including the Fort Pierce Farmer’s Market, where his booth is always one of the busiest. He’ll be easy to spot: He’s the easygoing guy with an arm tattoo that reads, “Don’t yank my chain.”

Q

uietly sitting in the corner of a Panera Bread in Palm Beach Gardens, Ashley Belford is trying to post her latest design on her company’s social media page, to no avail. The signal is sluggish.

She, on the other hand, is not.

Looking up from her phone, Belford unveils a resplendent smile that complements her sun-kissed skin and blueish-green eyes. The deep taupe-colored tank top and white elastic-waist shorts she’s wearing are adorable indeed—but it’s her jewelry that is the pièce de re´´sistance of the ensemble.

The dangly, tassel hoop earrings perfectly match her top. And the bracelets—a wicker bangle, beaded stones, and a white geode—are at once chic and casual. The whole look screams vibrant, trendy, and approachable—a fitting description for the owner of the handmade jewelry company known as Tassel Soul.

A Jupiter native, Belford, 41, began making jewelry seven years ago. She had seen a pair of earrings on a TV show that she wanted. They were hot pink and magenta but, at $200, a bit too pricey. She went online, searching the internet for material and wholesale vendors, until she was able to find all the pieces to re-create the earrings for a fraction of the price.

That’s how it started. Soon she found herself making

more earrings for herself, as well as for her sister and friends. People would post pictures of her earrings, creating a demand around them. She expanded her creations to include beaded bracelets and necklaces, selling them on Etsy, Facebook, and Instagram. Then wholesale and retail stores, like Tide and Table in Tequesta, wanted a piece of the action.

Having a background in interior design, Belford has always possessed a creative eye, but she also had a practical goal in mind. “I wanted to make pieces for women who like to be stylish and fun but also for moms who have budgets,” she says. Her three sons— Ryder, 12, Cooper, 10, and Zane, 7—help her dye beads or load the car during art shows, and she keeps her prices between $10 and $50.

Belford has since teamed up with another local mom and business owner, Tristan Whitaker, to offer customers something new. The founder of Love Hate Apparel, Whitaker, 43, makes local- and beach-inspired tops by hand in her Jupiter home, sometimes with the help of her daughters Hope, 9, and Georgia, 6. The poly-cotton blend she uses gives the tops a soft, breezy feel. And the fact that she has zeroed in on Jupiter living as one of her themes has given her line a competitive edge.

Whitaker made a few shirts for Tassel Soul. And then, she says, “Ashley posted a picture with a caption that said, ‘Tassels and Tanks,’ and I knew we had something.” The two women partnered to create the now-popular monthly subscription boxes, where they pair a tank top with jewelry at a discounted price.

They have some other ideas in the works, especially for the holiday season, and they’re talking about expanding their partnership to include the artwork of another local business owner. W

hen Brittney Hurt talks about her adolescence, it’s as though she is recounting the life of someone else. It’s a story marred by trauma that involves living in 30 different foster homes, being separated from her twin sister at 13 years old, and then sexually trafficked a year later.

By all accounts, Hurt could have wound up another statistic, destined to live a life of poverty, mental illness, addiction, or crime.

But nothing could be further from reality. Today, the 29-year-old wife and mother of three is thriving—and so is her business. Hurt is the founder of Native Armor, a company dedicated to brewing potent and delicious elderberry syrup, and she and her business

partner, Ashley Lancelot, are knocking it out of the park.

Elderberry is an antioxidant-rich medicinal herb that Hurt procures from the European strain Sambucus nigra. Every week, she and Lancelot brew the organic berry, refrigerating it in amber bottles in a kitchen in Port St. Lucie. They add cinnamon, clove, ginger, and Manuka honey to pack a powerful, immunity-building punch.

Hurt started out making the syrup for family and friends. At 11 weeks pregnant with her first child, she was in the emergency room with the flu and a 103-degree fever. Her doctor prescribed Tamiflu, but while she was desperate to get better, she was even

more desperate to keep her baby safe from any risks associated with the drug. Torn, she began researching natural alternatives.

She came across a recipe that incorporated elderberry as an ingredient and gave it a shot. After 24 hours of drinking the tea, her symptoms were gone.

A concoction of elderberry syrup and Manuka honey became her go-to elixir.

“Whenever I heard a sneeze I didn’t like, a runny nose, anything, I would turn to elderberry,” she says. “Making it from scratch and adding Manuka honey is the best way.”

It wasn’t until her third pregnancy in 2019 that Hurt’s husband suggested she launch an elixir business. “I thought, noone is ever going to buy this,” she recalls. “And I don’t know why, but I decided to give it a name.” In that moment, as the words “Native Armor” rolled off her tongue, her vision unfolded and her business took off.

Lancelot, 33, radiates joy, a sense of purpose, and an intoxicating energy. And since she came on board, the company has seen record-breaking sales (a portion of which are donated to The Inner Truth Project, a nonprofit organization on the Treasure Coast that helps victims of sexual violence).

The women became business partners in March, and Native Armor products are sold in natural retail stores as well as farmer’s markets including Stuart’s Market on Main, the Fort Pierce Farmers Market, and the St. Lucie Mets Community Market.

This past July, Stuart Main Street introduced something new to the Market on Main: a Kids Market, where young entrepreneurs showcased their precocious talents and business acumen. Children stood behind their booths—which were filled with everything from homemade pastries and organic quail eggs to sugar scrubs and handmade crafts—beaming with pride. River Robbins, a 3-year-old CEO of a lemonade stand, handled his own transactions. Nearby, siblings and artists Carmella and Ben Rodriguez talked about their inspiration (for Carmella, it is nature’s bounty; for Ben, it’s his sister, Carmella). Tristan Gray displayed his handmade hardwood shelves, and sisters Gemma and Chloe peddled their custom dog tags.

Some of the entrepreneurs exhibited heart-melting timidity, but all were professional. “Not only does [the market] teach entrepreneurship, but it also teaches social skills, responsibility, and work ethic,” says Candace Callahan, executive director of Stuart Main Street. “We are the incubators for small businesses with big dreams.”

KidSanctuary Campus Making a difference in the lives of local foster care children HISTORY OF KIDSANCTUARY CAMPUS KidSanctuary Campus was established in 2009 by local Philanthropist, Connie M. Frankino and today has four debtfree cottages on a secure 10-acre campus in West Palm Beach for local at-risk foster care children who receive 24-hour care in a family style home, until they are reunited with parents, adopted, or age out of the system. Today, more than ever, this campus is a vital resource to our community due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the increased need for the placement of foster care children.

MISSION Our mission is to ensure that each child that lives on campus receives the benefits of a sense of belonging and permanency in a caring and positive environment that nurtures self-esteem and hope.

WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW KidSanctuary Campus is reaching out to local community leaders for support to help us to complete and name the campus and build an Enrichment Center. The new Angel Crossing Enrichment Center will be a refuge where intervention programs, educational tutoring, case management, mentoring, social initiatives and family visitations will be scheduled for the children living in our cottages.

IMPACT To date over 100 children have resided on campus with some of them staying as long as six years. The children are some of the most vulnerable in the foster care system and they come to our cottages with mental, physical and educational challenges.

Many of them are behind in their academic performances and some are at least two years behind their current grade level.

The new Enrichment Center will empower the children and give them the space and tools they need to enable them to be able to do their work at grade level. Our Community Partners will design and schedule programs that will further enhance their

social and emotional well being, giving them clear direction and vision for a brighter tomorrow.

SUPPORT THE COMPLETION OF THE CAMPUS AND THE ANGEL CROSSING ENRICHMENT CENTER Proud to announce that we have broken ground to build the new Enrichment Center and are in the final Phase of construction in our Development Plan. We are happy to report that we received our first 1 million-dollar gift toward our 3.5 million dollar goal and have raised another $500K in pledges towards this 1000 Wishes Campaign. Our greatest wish is to have a matching 1 million dollar donor that will name the campus and help us complete the final Phase of our Development Plan. We also have other naming opportunities available at different donor levels in the Enrichment Center and throughout the campus.

he cucumber avocado tartare at Farmer’s Table in North Palm Beach puts two of October’s seasonal ingredients front and center. The appetizer was an instant hit when the restaurant opened in 2019, and it’s not unusual for the kitchen to prepare more than 30 dishes to order on a busy night. “Our goal was to have Culinary Director Michael Schenk invent chef-inspired versions of classic dishes

ana Greek Fusion, which opened in April in Harbourside Place, is committed to bringing authentic Greek cuisine to Jupiter. The restaurant is operated by the Chasomeri family, who grew up in Athens, Greece. Laz, a former Taverna Opa franchisee, serves as the chef, while his sister Anna anchors the front of the house.

“Mana means mother in Greek, and most of our dishes are based on our mother’s recipes,” says Anna. “My brother has been cooking since the age of 12 and spent most of his childhood in the kitchen. I love to interact with people, so we’re a good combination.”

Their success is also due to the popularity of the Mediterranean diet: No butter or cream is used, and Laz prefers to cook with olive oil from Crete. Everything in the kitchen is prepped daily from scratch, and ingredients not found in the United States are flown in from Greece. Some of the most popular

appetizers are the grilled octopus and the stuffed calamari (filled with baby shrimp, asparagus, tomato, and onion); entrées include village lamb, slow-roasted for five hours and served with carrots, potatoes, and fresh herbs, and the Mana paella, which features orzo in place of rice. Chef Laz caters to special diets with dishes such as handmade, vegetarian Impossible kefte—plant-based “meat” patties seasoned with a proprietary blend of herbs, spices, and chimichurri before being grilled.

The innovative cocktail list begins with perennial favorites such as margaritas and martinis and moves on to creations like the rakomelo made with raki, Greek honey, and cinnamon and served hot or cold, and the Colossus of Rhodes (bourbon, elderflower liqueur, lemonade, simple syrup, and basil).

There has been a revolution in Greek wine in recent years, and anyone who remembers retsina is in for a pleasant surprise. Mana offers a short but carefully chosen introduction to modern versions of classic varieties. Standout whites include Mantinia Moschofilero, an exotic and aromatic grape native to the Peloponnese, and Boutari Kretikos, made from an indigenous variety from Crete. Interesting reds range from syrah from the island of Evia to the King of Hearts by Nico Lazaridi, a blend of merlot and xinomavro.

The Chasomeris view Mana as a work in progress, and they spent this past summer enlarging and renovating the patio, adding an awning to protect diners during bad weather. Above all, they are cheerleaders for the cuisine of their native country.

“Cooking in Greece varies from one region to another,” says Anna. “But wherever you go, the food is healthy and amazing.”
