Spring’s Renewal Every home needs a nook, a cranny, a niche to retreat to for some well deserved “me time” or solitude.
“E
very house where love abides and friendship is a guest, is surely home, and home sweet home, for there the heart can rest.” Henry Van Dyke said these words, and they still ring true today; for most of us long for a sanctuary in our homes—a respite, a refuge, a place where one can truly rest and escape the outside world. Every home needs a nook, a cranny, a niche to retreat to for some well deserved “me time” or solitude. For some, it’s a home gym/yoga studio, a private garden, or a chaise lounge by the pool; for others, it’s a home office, library and even a closet. (I like the latter!) In “Enclaves of Retreat” on page 38, we feature luxe rooms you can retreat to and on-point accouterments that multitask in style, providing both a functional space and a place for solitude. With a little help from a highly skilled and talented team, including interior designer Angela Reynolds, a Jupiter family turned an ’80s classic into a cool, contemporary and ultra-chic masterpiece, with clean lines and innovative appointments. Custom-built for “aquaholics,” the exterior rivals that of famed South Florida resorts that tourists flock to, with unique elements such as a multi-level pool, fireplaces, waterfall features, sun shelves and 50-yard-line sunset seats. Now, that’s a sanctuary! What could be more American—or more South Florida for that matter—than baseball? For a lot of fans, spring means one thing: spring training. Build it and they will come, and they are, as thousands flock to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium and the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches for this national pastime, filling the coffers of our No. 1 industry: tourism. Check out these fields of dreams in our feature “Baseball by the Beach” on page 52 and see why these top-notch facilities host major and minor league baseball teams, yearlong events, and keep the fans enjoying the experience, year after year. Spring has sprung, and spring cleaning isn’t just for closets; it’s for the soul as well. It’s a time for introspection, reflection, dreaming and planning—a time for new opportunities to bud. Spring is nature’s renewal; it’s the season of rebirth and regrowth. We’re glad this issue has found its way into your home and your heart. I hope you carve out some space and time for your own renewal!

Meet Two Susan G. Komen Warriors in Pink The annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in West Palm Beach has drawn thousands of individuals living with or supporting those with breast cancer each year, and it has raised millions of dollars to help combat the disease. Kelly Seitz and Pat Maher are locals who were recently selected as part of this year’s Susan G. Komen Florida Warriors in Pink, a national program that recognizes breast cancer survivors who are dedicated to finding a cure and mentoring those affected. One way the women are raising awareness and spending time with other local survivors and supporters is through Lighthouse Dragons, a dragon boat racing team that meets at Jupiter Lighthouse for practice three times a week and participates in international events. Better Skin Now THREE MUST-TRY OXYGENATING FACIAL TREATMENTS By M E L I SSA P U P P O
DMK Enzyme Treatment
Oxygen Rx Treatment
It’s been called the “‘Game of Thrones facial” and the “grandma facial.” Its real name is the DMK Enzyme Treatment, which during the process, gives skin a tight, cracked and wrinkled appearance. Administered at Linda Rae Skin Care—a DMK award-winning Paramedical Skin Care Clinic—the treatment (from $175) helps restore the health of skin.
At Life Time Athletic’s LifeSpa, pamper yourself with the Oxygen Rx Treatment (from $125), which Audrey Frendreis, senior spa manager, says helps to kill bacteria, lightens and brightens the skin, and promotes healing from within.
Tri-Lifting Glow Facial Treatment: Experience three extraordinary benefits in one with the Tri-Lifting Glow Facial Treatment (from $259) that guarantees immediate results, offered at Anushka Spa, Salon & Cosmedical Centre.
Benefits: It’s ideal for all skin types, and
Benefits: Patients will have soft, hydrated
inside out, getting it to function properly as it did when younger,” says owner Linda Rae. The enzyme treatment improves scarring and treats issues like rosacea and melasma.
it works wonders for clients with acne and those who have rosacea and sensitive skin. No downtime is needed, so you can resume your usual schedule and skin care routine the next morning. Plus, it’s safe enough for weekly treatments.
How it works: An enzyme masque is applied, which stimulates the skin. “It also increases collagen production and clears out fluid of the cell and tissue with reverse osmosis and lymphatic draining,” Rae says. The masque then hardens and tightens; some can actually feel their face pulsating at this stage. After, the skin is bright, plump and hydrated. This effect is referred to as “plasmatic,” when the capillary network is visible on the skin’s surface.
How it works: A gel base is mixed together with a magnesium peroxide powder and is applied to the skin and worked in for a couple of minutes. An activator is then misted onto the face, which in turn converts the mixture into oxygen. You’ll feel a bubbling sensation and warmth—the turning point in the treatment. Once massaged in again, an equalizer spray is used and facial extractions can take place. A citric acid spray is applied followed by vitamin C and a post-peel balm.
How it works: The journey to a lifting facial takes 80-minutes and is broken into three phases. It begins with microdermabrasion to reveal fresh, untarnished skin. From there, a 30-minute microcurrent facial massage lifts the face using NuFACE microcurrent technology. It’s followed by an oxygen-infused Intraceuticals serum custom-mixed for each client’s specific skin needs. Infused oxygen helps to regenerate the skin cells. While it’s being mixed, you’ll also receive a collagen eye and lip mask to help moisturize the face’s well-worked areas.

The AKINA line features Shibori, an ancient Japanese dying technique.
AKINA Shop an array of one-of-a-kind, hand-dyed fashion and home accessories By Melissa Puppo
A
kina Johnson grew up doing arts and crafts on the weekends with her mother and sister. Sometimes it was tie-dye; other times it was crochet. Johnson shares the stories of her early years while sitting inside her home studio in Abacoa. It’s the space where she designs one-of-a-kind, hand-dyed fashion and home decor for her eponymous business AKINA, which she launched in 2016. Her studio is painted a refreshing aqua blue. Plush pillows designed in intricate indigo patterns sit near a window that’s cracked open, allowing a slight breeze to waft through and gently sway a collection of kimonos hanging on a clothing rack. There’s also a mirror and ballet barre (Johnson was a former dancer) that create a multipurpose space for her to conveniently exercise and hang up textiles for color matching all in the same place.
FROM HOBBY TO BUSINESS
The business came to fruition when Johnson’s sister gave her a book detailing Shibori, an ancient Japanese dying technique. As someone with a fashion design background, Johnson was crafting scarves for friends when one of them asked if she’d design a set of pillows. She was up for the challenge and executed it, turning a few pillows into a brand. Today, her line consists of home goods like pillows and linens, including napkins, tablecloths and table runners. “Basically, if it’s fabric and it’s white, I can dye it,” she says.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
First, Johnson folds her fabric and places hardware clamps strategically on the material before dying it to get the desired design. “I’ve used binder clips. I’ve used rubber bands, popsicle sticks,” she laughs. One of her most popular designs is kumo, which in Japanese can mean “spider” or “cloud” for its web-like aesthetic. It works in South Florida, with many adoring the style for its similarity in appearance to sand dollars picked at the beach. Johnson favors the opportunity to fill custom orders, through which she works with clients to carry out their visions. “A lot of times it has me thinking out of the box, having me do things that I normally wouldn’t’ do,” she says. “I really enjoy that because I get to come up with new color schemes.” And since Shibori is a Japanese method, she wanted to also incorporate traditional Japanese fashion with the brand. She has a loungewear line of kimonos, which have proven to be popular for bridal parties. Her collections include both long and short styles in silk, many of which are hand stitched. But, you can also pair one with a T-shirt and a great pair of jeans, or throw one over a bathing suit. Her designs are sold online and at local and national retailers, including Mecox Gardens in Palm Beach (additionally Dallas, Los Angeles and Napa), Decorators Unlimited, Island Home, Gypsy Life Surf Shop, House of Lavande and Lori Jayne.

Batch New Southern Kitchen and Tap A West Palm Beach scratch kitchen serving Southern favorites By Melissa Puppo
T
here’s a right way and a wrong way to serve chicken and waffles—and at Batch New Southern Kitchen and Tap they’re executed just right. Belgium-style cornbread waffles arrive tableside accompanied by chili-thyme honey and bourbonmaple butter to spread. The sweet tea-brined chicken is a perfect counterpart, making for one tasty meal.
NEW BEGINNINGS The eatery opened on Clematis Street in fall, serving up a menu specializing is new Southern cuisine. It’s the team’s second concept and third restaurant opening (Batch Hospitality Group also has its Gastropub brand in Delray Beach and Miami). “We’ve decided to label the restaurant as ‘new Southern’ because it’s definitely not the traditional ‘unbuckle the belt,’ heavy
Southern cuisine,” says Kevin Danilo, owner of Batch Hospitality Group. “We wanted to be able to pull from all of the different Southern flavors opposed to one specific region of ‘Southern,’ and we wanted the ability to put spins on classic items to give our guests completely new experiences.” ORDER UP For starters, the Cathead Biscuits come
with chili-thyme honey, seasonal local jam and bourbon maple butter. Or, pop HouseMade Bacon Tots in your mouth and wash them down with a garden-to-glass cocktail. Using a batching system, Batch serves some of its signature drinks on tap. A favorite is the Bootlegger, made with Ole Smoky Moonshine that’s infused with pineapple and jalapeño for a week before being carbonated with guava and fresh lemon juice. THE MAINS A few light options include a BBQ Jackfruit “Pulled Pork” sandwich and the plant-based Impossible Burger. The Shrimp ‘n’ Grits provides a spicy alternative to the classic with its infusion of jalapeño served with jumbo blackened shrimp and bacon jus. There’s also the Mac Attack—smothered in smoked cheddar and gouda with a topping of Frito dust. Customize it with extras like truffle oil, fried chicken and pecanwood smoked bacon. End on a sweet note with a jar dessert like Banana Puddin’. Our advice? Empty out the jar’s ingredients of custard, vanilla wafers, brûléed bananas and banana whipped cream onto a plate and mix together for a truly delicious experience.

A Dinner Party for the Ages Loxahatchee’s best-kept secret is Swank Farm’s specialty events, hosted by Darrin and Jodi Swank. By Melissa Puppo
T
o get to Swank Farm, drive west—way west. Elaborate street names will turn to single alphabetical letters, and asphalt roads will turn to dirt. Drive slow enough to not miss the farm’s subtle entrance—an access point with a simple sign planted in the ground to welcome guests from near and far. While driving through, watch a golden sun dip over the 20-acre parcel, and you’ll begin to understand why the trek is necessary. * * * On a Saturday evening in January, 100-plus guests descended on Swank Farm to attend the Master Chef Milwaukee dinner, a culinary event welcoming three impressive chefs from the Wisconsin city to whip up an open-air, multi-course meal and wine pairing. The venue on the farm is as whimsical as the plates that are served. Long, rustic wooden tables topped with simple flower arrangements sit inside a pole barn without walls. Crystal glass bottles and lanterns are suspended from the ceiling; tealight candles create an intimate mood; and a band is perched at the front, playing a bit of country folk music to set the scene. But past the twinkle lights and Persian-style lamb chops topped delicately with baby turnips (plucked from this very ground) is a business. And at the center of it all is husband-and-wife duo Darrin and Jodi Swank, the owners of Swank Farm. It’s safe to say they are the ultimate dinner party hosts. For nearly two decades they’ve called Loxahatchee Groves home. (They’re upgrading from a 450-square-foot house they built in 2001 to what Jodi calls her “dream home,” which will feature a commercial kitchen to accommodate cooking classes.) When the Swanks first bought the farm, they grew and sold three items. “We were blown away at how much we were able to produce in such a small shade-enclosed area, so we had all this basil, all this lettuce, all this arugula, and now we’re like, ‘What are we doing with it?’” Jodi recalls. They began reaching out to distributors and bringing samples to local chefs to see if they were interested.
30
MARCH 2019
“This was a product these chefs have never seen and they were aching for something new—and we had it,” Jodi says. Soon, word spread about the little farm in Loxahatchee delivering on the farm-to-table movement. And today, Darrin and Jodi grow more than 360 varieties to share with local chefs in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties—and to the general public through local green markets. The farm churns out arugula, kale, chard and micro greens, to edible flowers and cucumbers grown hydroponically. “We have some of the best lettuce you’ll ever try,” Jodi says. “It’s clean. No sand. No dirt. No grit.” They also grow tomatoes, strawberries, onions, beets and more via half-gallon grow bags. But the best-kept secret is the Swank Attend an upcoming event: SWANK TABLE March 10 “Vegetable Love,” an all-vegetable feast March 31 “3030 Ocean Reunion Dinner” April 7 Sixth annual “Vetu De Blanc” April 28 The Three Little “Gloucestershire” Pigs MASTER CHEF March 16 Master Chef Louisville March 23 Master Chef Boston April 13 Master Chef Delray Beach May 4 Master Chef Miami
Table monthly events. The concept? Bringing the community together to bond over food with help from culinary masterminds. More importantly, it’s a chance to educate the masses on where their food is coming from. “It’s so important to know your farmer and support them,” Jodi says. Guests can enjoy brunches, themed dinners (during which Darrin gives guests a farm tour before a family-style meal) and Master Chef events. On this particular evening is a multicourse plated dinner consisting of grouper with butter-braised carrots, green beans, beurre blanc and micro sorrel; grilled rabbit loin with a rosemary olive oil crumpet, chevre and seasonal jam; and a delicious strawberry upside down cake with orange curd and basil whipped cream. What first began as a “lunch on the farm” in 2012 has turned into a social season filled with 18 calendar events. The Swanks’ success goes farther than planting and parties; they’re supporting the community in addition to feeding hungry stomachs. Each event benefits a local organization close to their hearts, including Palm Beach Opera, Pathfinders of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and Meals on Wheels of Palm Beach. “I work with several charities that have been with me since the beginning, like the Cultural Council [of Palm Beach County],” Jodi says. “They have an amazing arts program for children. You feel good when you give back.”

Playing her way More than four decades after taking her first swing, Suzy Whaley has become the leader of one of the world’s largest sports organizations.

S
uzy Whaley, who recently became the first woman in history to serve as the president of the PGA of America, remembers the first time she hit a golf ball. She was 9 years old, hanging out at the Cavalry Club in Manlius, New York, where she had just spent a few hours swimming with friends. “Some of the boys from the pool invited me to hit golf balls at the range with them,” she says. “But of course, I was in my swimsuit, which wasn’t allowed. Once the staff called my mom and she arrived, she didn’t scold me. Instead, she asked if I liked playing, and from that moment on, no one could get me off the course unless it was snowing.” Whaley’s mother, Mary Ann McGuire, was an avid golfer, but never pushed the sport on her daughter. Growing up, Whaley was active in all activities, from skiing to swimming. But once she discovered golf, something about the sport was different. “Golf is a huge family affair,” she says. “Maybe it was in my blood. What I do know is my mother, who was an amazing woman, is a big part of why I started playing.” Whaley challenged the status quo as the first girl to compete on the boys’ golf team at Jamesville-DeWitt High School near Syracuse, New York, and went on to receive a full scholarship to play golf at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where she studied economics. “I was actually going to enroll in law school after graduation,” she says. “But then I qualified for a PGA event, and I played well enough to gain attention from sponsors. And well, now the rest is history.” Whaley, 52, has hit many more milestones, including becoming the first woman since the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for a PGA Tour event—the 2003 Greater Hartford Open. She was the 370th PGA profes-

sional (and the ninth woman) to acquire her certification as a PGA Master Professional, which is the highest educational level offered by the organization. She is also the first woman to ever serve as an officer of the PGA of America, where she previously held roles of secretary and vice president before her appointment as 41st president. “I wouldn’t have these opportunities without the women who came before me who made it all possible,” she says. “I really truly credit that to my success. You can’t underestimate that power, so while I’m the first, there were many others who opened these doors.” In addition to her role as PGA president, Whaley acts as the PGA director of instruction at the Country Club at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens. “I actually took up the post right around the same time as I was made presi-
dent,” she says. “My husband and I were living in Fort Lauderdale and decided to move up to Palm Beach. Over the last couple of years as an officer, I missed the opportunity to coach and teach.” Whaley is also the owner of Suzy Whaley Golf, an organization that offers golf programs and corporate programs. Women and girls represent only about a quarter of all golfers, but Whaley’s leadership is poised to positively advance female representation in the sport for generations to come. “The sport has evolved so much from when I was a young girl,” she says. “I played with all boys, and now you have girls in high school playing on their own teams. But we’re still not where we need to be. I want more [people of diversities] to be introduced and invited to play the game. Perhaps in 10 years’ time, we’ll look even more different on golf courses, at least that’s what we’re aiming for.”

The staff is exceptionally friendly, yet not intrusive—eager to please guests. The resort is stunning, but with low-key elegance, allowing guests to ensconce themselves into the rhythm of the island. The archipelago is comprised of 40 islands and cays that lie at the southeast end of the Bahamas chain, 575 miles southeast of Miami. In 2017, Hurricane Irma devastated the area with its slowmoving Category 5 winds of more than 200 mph. Each villa has its own outdoor fire pit lounge area and private oceanfront infinity pool with an optional private chef. EYOND THE MINUTIAE OF BASEBALL, a world in which statistics rule and every at-bat is a game within a game, there is a magical place called spring training, which is much more about ambiance, sun and fun—and Florida. From Dean Dogs to racing presidents, spring training baseball is uniquely appealing in Palm Beach County, where Jupiter’s Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium and FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach host four major league teams and 25 percent of spring training games, according to a Palm Beach County Sports Commission report. The Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals call Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium their spring training home, and the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals make camp at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. Dennis Grady, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, calls the respective ballpark experiences a microcosm of the Florida philosophy. “Travel and tourism is the No. 1 industry in Florida and No. 1 in Palm Beach County,” he says, “so that means you have to be darn good at customer service if you want to maximize your strongest economic engine. Both of those facilities maximize the return on the dollar.” The experiences at these facilities result in a combined annual economic impact of about $114 million, according to an analysis by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. It is a significant slice of the $687 million of economic impact for the state as reported by the Florida Sports Foundation. The impact study includes jobs, wages and tourism spending. While spring training is step one for potential most valuable players such as the Astros’ Jose Altuve or the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter, Grady says the ballparks are staffed by everyday MVPs. “The ushers and staff who work those facilities are the most outstanding people,” he says. “Many are retirees who know and love the communities. “I listen as they answer the questions of the fans— how to get to the waterpark, airboat rides, where to go and eat, how to get to the beach—and they are just the friendliest and most helpful representatives to the fans. I have to stand back and say, ‘mission accomplished.’”

oger Dean Chevrolet Stadium was built in 1997. The spring training home of both the Cardinals and Marlins is a common ground for uncommon teams. The Marlins are immersed in nine straight losing seasons and are in the throes of another rebuilding project. The Cards almost always contend and have strung together 11 straight winning seasons. The prospectus is enhanced by this year’s addition of perennial slugger/first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Despite starkly different paths, the Marlins and Cards have both won two World Series championships during the past 22 years. The stadium in which these two paths cross is a special destination for vacationers from St. Louis and to the expansive Miami fan base. “For nearly two decades, the Marlins have

been fortunate to call Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium our home,” says Claude Delorme, the Marlins executive vice president of operations and events. “The ballpark and surrounding complex are in such a convenient location for our organization—just a short drive from Miami—and for our fans.” The 6,800-seat stadium includes space for an additional 200 fans in the outfield grass berm area. The stadium offers views for fans at picnics, traditional seats, the Bullpen Club’s bar-style seating or the rightfield “party deck.” Among the stadium’s standout features, Delorme says he likes the “Cassidy Cool Zone.” “It provides a great vantage point to watch the game action, and the picnic-table atmosphere is a nice change of pace for watching a game,” he says. Stadium Media Relations Coordinator Andrew

Miller enjoys his workplace. “It’s a prime location for spring training, always 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and a unique atmosphere in a vibrant community,” he says. Plus, he notes there are six backfields per team for fans to view practices, including some spaces that are specialized for outfield or infield only. The vast concession menu includes one particularly enormous item: the signature Dean Dog. This one-third-pound grilled frankfurter, which Miller says “is a meal,” is original to the stadium. The Dean Dog days roll on throughout the summer. When spring training ends, the stadium gets busier. “This is the only stadium in the country to host two minor league teams at the same facility,” Miller says. Depending on scheduling, either the Jupiter Hammerheads or Palm Beach Cardinals play a home game every day of the Florida State League regular season.

“Y
ou can go home again,” say most third base coaches in defiance of Thomas Wolfe’s 1930s novel. So too says Miami Marlins center fielder Lewis Brinson. The 24-year-old grew up in Fort Lauderdale and graduated from Coral Springs High School. He was a firstround draft pick by the Texas Rangers in 2012, broke into the majors with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2017 and returned to South Florida last year. He’s dealt with injuries and is looking for a breakout season after compiling a modest .199 average last season. “I grew up a Marlins fan. It is literally a dream come true to be playing for them now and to be able to represent my hometown team on the field,” Brinson says. “It’s the close proximity to home. I don’t have to worry about moving from home to Arizona and then back every spring, like I did before I played for the Marlins. And it’s also nice that my family is so close and can come up here to see me.” Brinson’s opportunity is as unique as the setting offered by the Marlins spring training home in Jupiter. “It is very rare in baseball that a family can take a short drive from their home and see their favorite team play at spring training, and can get upclose-and-personal with their favorite players in the unique atmosphere and proximity that spring training provides,” says Claude Delorme, the Marlins executive vice president of operations and events.

ITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches is a more than $135-million facility and is “pure and simple, the newest car on the street,” Grady says. “It is brand spanking new and has a wow factor.” There is no vagueness about who uses this facility, which opened in 2017. Two 30-foot statues of team logos distinctly mark the homes of the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros. The quality of play is at a high level. The Astros are but two years removed from their first World Series championship season. That is noted in a left field logo. The Nationals, due to a strong pitching staff led by Max Scherzer, remain contenders. Two years ago, the Nationals left Viera and the Astros exited Kissimmee. Both of those facilities are considered to be excellent, so their new destination had to be greater. Ballpark of the Palm Beaches is a 160-acre complex that features a fan-friendly stadium with room for 7,700 (including a picnic berm) as its centerpiece, along with six practice fields per team. This season will also have several fun events at the ballpark for fans, including a special St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Seniors Stroll the Bases, Pre-Game

Catch on the Field, six Fireworks Nights, Bark at the Park events, Signature Sundays and numerous giveaways. A Washington Nationals spokesperson notes that West Palm Beach is a vibrant city and has been well-received by the entire Nationals organization, stating that FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches has become a destination in the local community, and feels like a second home. Fans may enjoy games while seated in the shade, from a 360-degree wrap-around concourse, on the Banana Boat Lawn, within suites or on party decks. The concessions are as varied as the Capitol Hill Grill, the Lone Star Cantina or the Craft Corner with 32 craft beers on tap. Racing presidents called the Rushmore Four (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt) are an in-game treat for fans at Nationals games in Washington. The West Palm Beach version of the race matches “retired” large-headed mascots of William Taft, Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolidge. Astros Senior Manager of Com-

munications Steve Grande says their team’s mascot Orbit is present at all games as well. But if uniforms are more your taste than costumes, Grande adds “there is fan access on the practice field. Morning workouts are open to the public and give fans close access to our players as they prep for that day’s game and the regular season.” FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches has set itself up as a destination for all seasons. It hosts elite tournaments, community walks, corporate functions, concerts and festivals among other events. Five athletic fields offer the opportunity to host major soccer and lacrosse events. The campus includes a walking trail, a 12-acre city park with a playground, green space, lighted basketball courts and pavilions, as well as seven multi-purpose fields for youth sports. Regardless of whether one indulges in a Dean Dog or cheers on the portly William Taft caricature in the ex-presidents’ race, the dedicated and casual baseball fans will find the best spring training has to offer in Palm Beach County.

On Spring Training Past By Bernard McCormick
W
orld War I was just getting serious. Woodrow Wilson, having taken over the presidency from William Howard Taft, was trying to figure out what to do about it. Jackie Robinson was minus 4 years of age. He would not come along until 1919, a year after the Great War ended. Florida, at least the part that was civilized, was only about half the occupied geography it is today. The southeast coastal cities were mostly infants. Fort Lauderdale had just been incorporated as a city. It was 1915, and a baseball field, which would be named for Jackie Robinson decades later, had just been built. Like its namesake, Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach would one day be a hall of fame site, on the national historic register, as the oldest Florida place where baseball spring training would be played. It did not actually host spring training until years later, but it was there when the time came. As with most of the spring training fields, which followed over the next several decades, Jackie Robinson Ballpark no longer hosts a major league team. The last team to use it was the Montreal Expos in 1980. It honors Robinson because in 1946, when segregation was still the order for most of the south, Robinson was starring for a Dodgers minor league affiliate in Daytona when they played the Brooklyn Dodgers in an exhibition game. It was a first integrated game involving a big league team. Robinson officially broke the big league’s racial barrier when he moved up to the Dodgers the next season.

For years, Florida was the only game in town for spring training, but as baseball expanded westward, Arizona, with its Cactus League, became a competitor to the Grapefruit League. Today all but a few of the original Florida training fields are still used, but not by big league teams. The lesser fields of dreams host college and minor league teams. Newer facilities, which often look like HO gauge versions of the big league ballparks, have appeared in towns that hardly existed when spring training first discovered the Sunshine State. The southeast coast, which once had a half-dozen major league training sites, including two of the most famous, is now down to only three. The two newest, covered in the main story, are both in Palm Beach County. A bit farther north, Port St. Lucie has First Data Field (1988), which has been home from the beginning to the New York Mets. Two of the facilities that had the most impact on their communities no longer have major league tenants. Dodgertown in Vero Beach is a unique facility and still an active venue with college and some foreign teams. Now known as Vero Beach Sports Village, it occupies 67 acres and still has villas that were once filled with veterans and rookies for one of baseball’s legendary franchises. Holman Field was unusual in that it had no outfield fences. There were stands along the foul lines, but in the outfield, fans used to sit on the grassy embankment surrounding the field. A row of palm trees had painted yellow markers halfway up the trunks and the umpire judged a home run if it passed above the paint. It was so popular with Brook-

First Data Field, opened in 1988, is the spring home of the New York Mets. The stadium, just off Interstate 95 in St. Lucie West, has 7,160 seats, plus room for fans on the outfield berm. That idea was introduced by the old Dodgertown in Vero Beach, except Dodgertown for years did not even have a fence between the outfield and the fans.
lyn fans that many people later retired in Vero after getting to know the area through the Dodgers. Bobby McCarthy, owner of the popular Bobby’s Restaurant, just off the beach, recalls the days when Dodgers blue dominated the community. His restaurant featured photos of the team and was a magnet for players and fans alike. “We opened in 1981, and the Dodgers won the World Series that year and again in ’88,” he says. “There’s no question that Dodgertown made the town and our restaurant a go-to place. We still see Ron Perranoski (former Dodgers pitcher) because he lives here. But the Dodgers left 14 years ago, and new people who moved in the last 10 years don’t even know the Dodgers were here.“ Similarly, if not on such an intimate scale, Fort Lauderdale was for more than 30 years identified with the New York Yankees. When opened in 1962, Little Yankee Stadium was one of the first of the modern spring training sites, with a contemporary design and sprawling locker rooms. Yankee greats of that era were popular figures around town; some became winter residents. The popular Yankee Clipper Hotel, now the B Ocean Resort, took its name from Yankee great Joe DiMaggio’s nickname. The Yanks also had a minor league team using the field. Modern it may have been in its day, but it did not have room for surrounding training fields and facilities that teams desired in later years. When the Yankees left in 1993, the

Boston Red Sox and later Baltimore Orioles kept a major league presence until 2009. Today, renamed Fort Lauderdale Stadium, it is used mostly for soccer events. The Dodgers left Vero Beach after 60 years at Dodgertown. The Yankees abandoned Fort Lauderdale after 33 years. There is no guarantee of community loyalty when it comes to spring training. There are, however, examples of long relation-
ships. The Detroit Tigers came to Lakeland’s Henley Field in 1934 and are still there, although they play now at the newer Joker Marchant Stadium. The Philadelphia Phillies put Clearwater on the baseball map when they began training at Jack Russell Stadium in 1955. Sixty-four years later in 2004, the Phils made their spring home in Clearwater at the more modern Bright House Networks Field, now Spectrum Field.

Waterfront Properties’
Andrea Roth
Tops $30 Million Sold Over Last 12 Months Jupiter - Juno Waterfront Condominiums by Bella Group
Andrea2019-GMG.indd 2-3
Promotion
Andrea Roth sold over $30 million of Jupiter - Juno Beach real estate in the last 12 months. Her exclusive domain for nearly a decade at Waterfront Properties is the Jupiter - Juno condominium market. Andrea represented four times as many condo buyers as her closest competitor during the same time period. That’s more than significant—it’s exceptional. When asked about her success, Andrea pointed to marketing and “sheer hard work.” “I focus on creating a marketing plan that is custom designed to maximize my customer’s goals,” Andrea said. “Marketing is a major component of success. With the right marketing, we create more showings, which leads to more sales at higher prices. No one does Internet marketing better than Waterfront.” Andrea was referring to the combination of Waterfront Properties’ highly regarded team of in-house real estate marketing specialists, agent coaching by Waterfront leaders, and 6,000 internationally award-winning property exposure websites that capture qualified buyers from the local market, across the country and internationally. Whereas nine out of ten real estate purchases began as an Internet search last year, 87% of all sellers worked with a realtor. The combination of Waterfront’s digital resources and Andrea’s “sheer hard work” make for a successful one-two punch. Terri Allen has been both Andrea’s seller and buyer over the course of eight transactions. In a single year, Andrea sold Terri four properties and then resold each of them. Terri said, “I spent 35 years in commercial real estate acquisitions nationwide, and likely did about a billion dollars in transactions before relocating to Jupiter from Louisville, Kentucky.” She went on, “I was used to a high level of professionalism on the commercial side that you usually don’t see in residential real estate.” By contrast, she described Andrea as exceedingly knowledgeable and meticulous, adding, “Andrea is very organized and has terrific follow through. She is so very upbeat.” Adding the ultimate compliment, Terri concluded, “Honestly, I’d like to spend more time with her.”
Originally from Buffalo, NY and, later, Chicago, IL, Andrea’s own corporate background and training, including an MBA, defines how she works with sellers and buyers, and how she regards her workplace. “In my corporate days it was called ‘best practices.’ That’s what I call what we’re doing at Waterfront. We are always evolving, but we have a core corporate culture of best practices.” It’s also clear that Andrea has a personal set of best practices she abides by. “I can’t leave anything undone.” Andrea’s sellers and buyers see that hyper-efficiency as one of the keys to her success on their behalf. Splitting time between Kansas and Palm Beach County, Larry Marney has also sold and purchased properties with Andrea. Selling or buying, Larry said, “With Andrea you have two decisions to make. If you’re buying, pick the property you want. Decide what you want to pay. If you’re selling, decide what you’ll let a property go for.” He said the next thing any client should do is get out of her way. “It will be done and it will be done perfect. I didn’t even go to a closing. She handles everything and she does it extremely well.” As confident as she is upbeat, Andrea’s knowledge of the Jupiter - Juno waterfront condo market is evident the moment you engage her on the subject. The numerous sight unseen purchases she’s accumulated over the years evidences this fact. Having joined Waterfront in 2010, Andrea said, “Every year since I’ve been here has been better than the last.” Coming off a phenomenal 12 months where she sold well over twice the dollar volume of her nearest competitor, Andrea is off to a fast start with all signs pointing to 2019 as another year of professional and personal bests. The married mother of three “amazing boys” is very focused on family, which grew recently with the addition of a rescue “doggie” from Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch. Waterfront Properties Owner Rob Thomson said of Andrea, “She’s a total pro. Anyone who works with her, that’s what they’re getting.”

water view gives a space gravitas, grasps the imagination and provides a backdrop that is constantly in motion. It is everything nature intended. For many seeking to stake their claim on a piece of South Florida’s most desirable lots, waterfront is prime real estate. Angela Reynolds, the internationally renowned designer who counts Celine Dion and Elin Nordegren as her clients, is not only big on flowing views, she’s also big on liquid assets. “I love incorporating water in my designs,” Reynolds says. “Water creates an experience of calm and serenity.” It’s not a novel notion: from the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal, fountains and reflection pools have captivated for centuries. Touring one of Reynolds’ latest completed projects, a 9,000-square-foot remodel along Jupiter’s Intracoastal, one is first greeted by the commanding stone, wood, steel and glass entrance, juxtaposed by large steps that appear to literally float atop water. “Water softens the grandness,” Reynolds says. “It makes it more approachable and ethereal.” Green, tropical plants of various sizes and textures surround the narrow water channels and the two basins on either side. A 10-foot glass door pivots to enter. “The door really sets the tone,” Reynolds says. When the Reilly family purchased the home, it was a 1980s ultra-modern relic, exuding the coolness of Madonna in her heyday—leather skirts and Aqua Net. Yet the family knew that with the right team, it could—like the pop queen—be reinvented. “It was a challenge,” Amy Reilly says. “We were looking to transform a home that was dated with round walls and stairs in the middle. We wanted a family-friendly, contemporary home. And most importantly, we needed it to work for our busy family of six. Out of all the designers we interviewed, Angela was the most visionary.” Along with hiring Reynolds, the Reillys brought on award-winning architect Mitchell O’Neil and Affinity Construction Group. The biggest structural challenge was removing the ceiling in the family room and kitchen to build a second-floor base that would allow for an upstairs addition. “We actually ended up with another 2 feet of ceiling height for the kitchen and family room,” Reilly says. Reynolds, who loves ceiling decor, took a cue and added beautiful, ebony wooden slats

in the new ceiling. It became an interior and exterior motif. For the sunken living room, a popular ’80s feature, Reynolds gave it a refresh by designing a custom sofa from New Design in Fort Lauderdale. The sofa hugs the stairs as if it had been grafted to them. “This room was one of the more challenging ones, because of those stairs,” Reynolds says. “But challenges force me to come up with solutions that are exciting.” The dark ebony coffee table with its edgy abstract angles (another custom build) pairs precisely with the tailored sofa and the Bolier side chairs. The room’s fabric, a study in different shades of gray (though not quite 50!), is made for outdoor use. Reynolds wanted to make sure the room was not off limits to the couple’s four children. A saltwater aquarium and oversized-but-thin Restoration Hardware chandeliers complete the look. Along the opposite wall, a glass-encased wine room holds more than 400 bottles—another liquid feature. For the dining room, Reynolds constructed a custom chandelier by assembling a variety of single Arteriors pendants in various sizes and adding a metal ceiling plate to unify the pendants, changing the way it cascades and diffuses light.

Different levels add interest in a backyard that mirrors the most coveted boutique hotels
“We looked at so many different options,” Reilly says. “And now I have something so unique and elegant created by Angela’s team. I love it.” The original marble floors in the home were in great condition, but Reynolds softened the feel of the kitchen with wide, white oak planks that would contrast with the dark ceiling. “I like to mix and match different types of wood,” Reynolds says. “Sometimes clients are afraid to incorporate contrast, but it only adds layers of beauty. We are past the era where everything needs to match.” White shaker cabinets keep the look timeless, while the glass uppers showcase beloved objects without fear of playful children. Off the kitchen, the home opens up to a completely redesigned backyard space. Almost every inch of soil was turned over to create the pièce de résistance, conceptualized by landscape architect Tony Grimaldi. “In Florida, there is such a focus on exterior spaces,” Reynolds says. “No one is hanging out in the formal dining room; we are hanging out by the pool. Our goal was to capture the feeling of an inviting, boutique hotel.” The space is multi-leveled, continuing its use of fluid elements leading up to the awesome Intracoastal access. The pool, newly minted, has a hip, white plaster shell and features white, antislip tile that seamlessly dips into the water. “Joe’s Point,”named after the home’s owner, is a separate sitting area off the pool that can only be accessed by walking over wet steps and a gentle waterfall feature. The outdoor furniture at Joe’s Point is from Restoration Hardware. Above, a pergola from Arcadia opens and closes depending on weather conditions.

(top) Who said a family room needs to be closed in? This is Florida, after all. Resysta composite on the walls is incorporated into the custom furnishings for a look that is cool and contemporary. (bottom) All-weather chairs and materials make this space usable and kid-friendly yearround.
“Joe’s Point is at the edge of the pool, near the water,” Reilly says. “It is the most relaxing place to end the day.” The backyard also boasts a covered canopy that feels like a family room, with cozy, custom sitting pieces made from Resysta composite, an all-weather material. The same composite is used on the ceiling, harking back to the kitchen’s design. On the opposite end, another zen spot has been carved out along a rectangular fire pit. It is sunken, like the living room inside. Weather resistant, blue sofas give a burst of color and manifest clean lines. But the best part? The front row seats are for watching the famed Florida orange and pink skies that begin and end the day. The pool, large enough for laps and certainly large enough to hold spirited afternoon parties, is an exercise in restraint, simplicity and multileveling. There is a shelf for youngsters to wade in or mothers to soak up vitamin D atop icy white, Brown Jordan swim chaises. Alongside, there are more thematic floating steps, this time leading into the water. “We enjoy every inch of the backyard space,” Reilly says. “I’m so grateful to our entire design team in how they created something so functional and so chic.”

I was 16 when he passed. If I could talk to my dad today, I would tell him I feel like I am making a difference. I am working toward a PhD in biochemistry at that campus, the No. 2 ranked program in the nation. We are developing antibodies designed to direct people’s immune cells to kill their cancer. The work we’re doing at Scripps Research has the potential to help so many people.” Rebecca Goydel, doctoral student, Skaggs Graduate School of Chemical and Biological Sciences, Jupiter, Florida

Winning a national championship at Florida State was: awesome. We won a state championship at Dwyer in high school, and then we won a national championship in college. All 22 of our starters from that Florida State team made it to the NFL. That’s a very special team.
2
The first thing I thought about when I received the call that the Buffalo Bills were drafting me was: that my dream of playing in the NFL was coming true. Then I thought about how different it was going to be playing football outside of Florida for the first time in my life, and how I was going to one of the coldest places I’d ever been. I’m very happy to be back in the warm weather of Miami now.
3
People might be surprised to know that life in the NFL is: filled with very long days. I’m in the building at 6 a.m., then I’m working out before the 8 a.m. team meeting. After that,
it’s offense and defense meetings at 11:30 a.m., practice until 2 p.m., eat lunch, and then have meetings from 3:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. It’s a longer workday than anyone realizes.
4
For me, the best thing about the off-season is that I get to: hunt, play golf, hang out with the guys outside of football, spend time with the family and have home-cooked meals at home. And being back home in Florida means I can now choose when I want to travel to cold weather.
5
Being the grandson of golf great Jack Nicklaus means: that I see him differently than everyone else does. He’s just my grandfather, just like everyone else who has a grandfather. But everyone else sees him as the greatest golfer of all time. When I went to the Masters, it really put into perspective for me how much he means to people and to the entire world of golf.
Butcher Shop Blackberry Mojito: 2 muddled blackberries and mint leaves .25 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces Don Q Rum 1 ounce lemon juice Shake, strain and serve over ice. Top with soda, garnish with fresh blackberries and mint leaves.
After winning state championships in football and lacrosse at William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, O’Leary headed to Tallahassee to play football at Florida State. During a celebrated collegiate career he was named a consensus All-American, won the John Mackey Award as college football’s most outstanding tight end, and set FSU’s all-time record for most career receptions by a tight end, all while winning three conference championships and the final BCS National Championship in 2014. In the 2015 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected O’Leary and he played three seasons with the team prior to joining the Miami Dolphins in 2018. An avid outdoorsman who especially enjoys hunting and playing golf, O’Leary currently resides in Jupiter Farms.

T
here is a man who once ran for president who is only remembered today because he once ran for president. Although he did not say it at the time, it was later revealed that he knew he did not have an Afghan’s chance of being elected, but he ran because he thought it would double his speaking fees. In the current political context, that is about as good a reason as any for the many people we never heard of who are exploring a run for the nation’s highest office. Almost all the unknowns are Democrats, which suggests they think that after the present occupant, anybody can be elected. With a few exceptions, these people have not formally announced. They simply say they are exploring the possibility of running because so many people tell them they could make America great again. We also cynically suspect they figure they could also get some campaign contributions, which they will figure out a way to use in the next city council race. Not to speak of speaking fees. Part of the lure of exploring higher office is that these would-be candidates always seem to get immediate recognition. As this rant was being prepared, the Miami Herald reported that among the unknowns who are exploring running for president is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, a place nobody has ever heard of unless you follow college football. His name is Pete Buttigieg, and the Herald reported that he “received a full day of coverage from cable news networks and plenty of ink from news outlets when he announced that he was launching an exploratory committee this month.” The Herald also wrote that closer to home, Wayne Messam, the little-known mayor of Miramar, a town in western 144

Broward County, is testing the water. This man is little remembered as a player on Florida State’s 1993 championship football team. To be accurate, the report said he is “pondering” entering the race. Pondering is a preliminary step before actually “exploring” the idea of a candidacy. ccordingly, we are pondering exploring the idea of exploring entering this crowded field, largely because everyone seems to want a fresh face, no matter how ill qualified, and we think we could make the country great again and attract some nice campaign contributions to boot. We are a rigid conservative, believe firmly in the constitution and its original intent, even if we don’t know what that intent was. We also believe in the nine commandments. The only one we doubt is the one against stealing. Searching for something to set us apart from the many others seeking contributions to explore a run for the highest office, it occurs that we were almost born to explore. Both our high
A
school and college were nicknamed the Explorers. It seems that back in the 1920s a Philadelphia sports writer thought schools named La Salle (there is one in Miami) were named after the man who claimed the Mississippi River for France. That would be René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (Bobby for short). He has a nice street named for him in Chicago. However, the schools are named for St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers religious order, who came up with the idea of educating disadvantaged boys— a group into which we fit naturally. That by itself should get us the support of liberals. We also favor Medicare and higher education for all. In fact, everything should be free, including cocktails in South Florida bars. That way we would not need to pay for anything and could do away with taxes. That should be popular with those with unearned income of $1 million or more a year. And those are the same people who ponder ways to blow their money and tend to support hopeless candidates just because they exist. Finally, we will devoutly work to take money out of politics, with the exception of campaign financing. We would explore means of controlling the pernicious influence of money, with graduated tax exemptions for contributions to those pondering, exploring and ultimately actually running for the highest office in the land. We can’t speak for all the other candidates, but we can assure our supporters that if we got enough money for merely pondering and exploring a race for the top, we would withdraw gracefully, and leave the world as the perfect place we know today. gulfstreammediagroup.com
