Editor’s note

Happy daze

hen I’m planning the next issue, I’m always on the lookout for cool, local people. And when I first chatted with Lauren Thomas, I was, in a word, stricken. I checked her Instagram and was immediately like, Wow, #GOALS! I mean, she has such a fantastic aesthetic when it comes to decor and style in general, and she and her family are living what I can only call a truly good life here in Jupiter. Of course, “the good life” is a pretty subjective thing. But to me, it means being surrounded by loved ones, creating a space for your family that you adore, doing the things that make you the happiest, and appreciating all of the blessings the universe has thrown your way. That’s the Thomases, in a nutshell. Lauren and her husband, Christian, are “homegrown” Floridians, both born and raised in the Jupiter area. And they have carved out a life for themselves and their two children that is quintessential Jupiter living. Get to know our cover couple beginning on page 36. I was at ArtisGras back in February, and I came upon some photos that blew me away. So much so, that I bought one, and it has become the focal point of my living room. Turns out, the artist is a local, Richard Auger, who travels all over Florida seeking out “unseen, raw, natural” spots in our beautiful state and captures them to perfection. Check out some of his work in “An Ode to Home” on page 56. Another feature I’m pretty excited about is “The Green Rush,” which delves into one of the biggest businesses thriving in Florida today—the cannabis industry. Turn to page 50 to learn about some of the progressive companies moving to our area—one native recently started a cultivation facility in Indiantown; another just moved his U.S headquarters to Jupiter this spring—and what it means to us in terms of jobs, the economy, and more. It’s not all about medical marijuana; compound cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant can be used in everything from beauty products to various home items. As someone who uses CBD oil to treat my rescue dog’s anxiety, I can honestly say I couldn’t be happier that people are starting to open their eyes to this “super ingredient” that is incredibly beneficial in so many ways. I hope you enjoy these features and all of the other content we have brought to our pages in this double May/June issue. Oh, and a giant “Happy Mother’s/Father’s Day” to all you moms and dads. No place like home

here aren’t too many people like me here—I’m a local, born and raised right here in Florida. I was born about 120 miles north in Cocoa Beach and have spent the past 25 years in the Jupiter/Palm Beach Gardens area. I consider myself “homegrown,” a true Floridian. Salt water runs through my veins, and I enjoy boating, paddleboarding, going to the beach, and all things coastal. I’ve met people from all over the world that have gravitated to Jupiter and agree there’s no place like it. We have the perfect combination of that laid-back vibe emanating from the most exquisite natural resources mixed with worldly influences from a melting pot of transplants and sprinkled with a little extra something to do for our year-round tourists. Speaking of homegrown, did you know Florida has one of the fastest-growing medical marijuana industries, with more than $1 billion in sales and expected to soar to $6 billion in the next 10 years? With a population of more than 21 million and a tourist population that averages around 130 million a year, Florida is positioned to be one of the largest marijuana markets in the world. The state’s large senior population likely factors into the booming medical marijuana industry. Many seniors feel that medical marijuana has fewer side effects and is safer than a lot of prescription pharmaceuticals. Health care has been a hot topic of late. The pandemic has catapulted our health care workers to hero status, and deservingly so. In this issue, we celebrate health care professionals with a special section, “Top Doctors,” that lists local physicians from PRS (Professional Research Services) who are top in their class and showcases their expertise in their field. Save this issue and refer back to it often as you make educated health care decisions for you and your family. As we head into summer, enjoy the long, lazy days and remember why we all love to call Jupiter home!

In turbulent markets, remain focused Volatility in the financial markets is a constant. Over the long run, taking advantage of these changes in value is what most investors hope to achieve. Managing the short-term swings, either up or down, however, can challenge even the most disciplined investor. HOW ARE YOU GUIDING YOUR CLIENTS IN TODAY’S VOLATILE ENVIRONMENT?

While the specifics of our guidance obviously vary by client, our recurring theme is: investment success is more likely to happen through thoughtful portfolio management. This means risk analysis, evaluating concentration, and leveraging quantitative and qualitative research. Volatility can muddle investor thinking. In our experience, a basket of investments hastily brought together during market swings can also bring with them unwelcome surprises: tax consequences, increased risk, lower returns and lost opportunity.

WHAT CAUSES MARKET VOLATILITY?

Wide swings in the marketplace can have many causes, and sometimes unknown causes. Changes in company management or unexpected earnings, for instance, can provoke responses that may cascade into sector-wide activity, and beyond. Political events, such as an election, or global events, such as our current pandemic, can trigger turmoil in the marketplace. Whatever the cause, investor emotion often runs high. Investors worry, should I sell, should I buy, am I missing out while others amass a future fortune?

HOW CAN PERCEIVED OPPORTUNITY REALLY BE RISK?

In markets characterized by wide swings, investors can be tempted to sell at abrupt highs and buy at sudden lows. In so doing, they may end up with a collection of mismatched investments that run counter to their financial goals. And they may cash out on otherwise strong investments, eliminating the possibility of further long-term gains. While hindsight is always 20/20, in times of sharp surges and declines, it’s important to maintain a long-term view and focus on your primary reasons for investing.

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED FROM PAST MARKET SWINGS?

The field of behavioral economics is devoted to the study of the relationship between emotion and financial decision-making. Numerous studies have shown that investor behavior during periods of marked volatility—following a selloff trend, for example—can result in poor returns. A recent Dalbar study compared the 20year results of an average mutual fund investor to indices: the average investor, who sometimes resorts to market timing or other performancechasing strategies, underperformed based on measures of annualized returns and the growth of $100,000.*

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TODAY’S INVESTOR?

Investors should always keep in mind that the time value of money is perhaps the greatest factor driving its change in value. In plummeting markets, be sure you carefully evaluate the decision to cash in, closing the door on future gains. On the flip side, acquiring “bargain” investments when market momentum is feverishly optimistic may prove to be riskier than at first glance. When serious sums are at stake, we urge investors to seek professional advice.

n 2006, Suzie Dudas moved to a 10-acre parcel of land in Jupiter Farms intending to grow palm trees. But during an endless search for raw dairy in the area (she grew up drinking milk from glass bottles), she instead decided to buy a cow. Overwhelmed by the amount of milk the cow produced for her family, she began selling her grass-fed milk to the public, which led to eager locals attending weekly tours at her micro-dairy, Jupiter Creamery. “Before you buy rural milk, you need to see how the farmer treats the animals, how they’re fed, and how clean the equipment is,” says Dudas. “So I started giving these tours and selling milk.” In 2017, she launched the nonprofit Nourishing Food for Thought with the mission of teaching people where their food comes from and how to eat safely and

clean. She has since expanded the farm to house four cows, pigs, chicken, and sheep and sells everything from raw milk and butter to yogurt and soaps. On Thursdays, Dudas opens her farm to the public for those who want to get their hands dirty or pick up their order of milk and eggs. She also hosts weekly workshops and events throughout the year on things like soap making and bathing cows, which she posts online and shares via a monthly newsletter. For her most recent project, she has started a community “teaching garden” tended by volunteers, where adults and children can learn where their produce comes from and receive weekly instruction and gardening tips. other’s Day is a special Cara Belvin time to celebrate the wonderful women in our lives, but for those who have lost their mothers, it’s a time of reflection and healing. Cara Belvin lost her mother to breast cancer when she was just 9 years old and remembers thinking how she didn’t know any other kids in a similar situation. “That’s a really isolating experience,” shares Belvin, who is the founder of empowerHER, a nonprofit whose mission is “to empower, support, and connect girls and young women who have experienced the loss of their mothers.” EmpowerHER has raised millions of dollars to host Mother’s Day retreats and year-round events such as beach parties and yoga classes at no cost to families. Belvin has also created a one-of-a-kind mentorship program spanning the United States—and this Mother’s Day, empowerHER is bringing its nationwide Luminaria event to Jupiter. “Luminaria is such a powerful way to honor people,” says Belvin of the whimsical

spectacle that will take place across 10 cities this year. “It’s like a celebration of life.” Chaired locally by Jenna Mathis and 12 of her girlfriends, the Luminaria fundraiser allows those who have lost their mothers— or another family member—to purchase a bag on which a calligrapher will write the name of the person they would like to honor or remember. On Mother’s Day, the bags will be illuminated with a battery-operated, flickering tea light candle on the Jupiter Inlet, and those who purchased one will receive keepsake photos and a special video. ext spring, FAU’s Jupiter campus will unveil its new Neuroscience Building, a 58,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that will house the Brain Institute and more. According to Dr. Randy Blakely, executive director of the FAU Brain Institute and a professor of medical science, the new site is part of the university’s “Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence” and FAU President John Kelly’s focus on neuroscience as a pillar that “will define the institution’s programs and create knowledge that benefits society.” Here, Blakely outlines some of the new campus’s highlights.

THE FACILITY The Neuroscience Building will allow FAU to house 20 principal investigators/faculty; a similar number of research faculty and postdoctoral students; and about 100 high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, who will each engage in state-of-the-art research training. The first floor will house the Center for Comparative Medicine, doubling FAU’s capacity for behavioral and physiological analysis. The Center will provide opportunities for scientists and their trainees to advance medication leads and dissect the impact of

Express YOURSELF Three Jupiter-area students foster their artistic side and come out on top in Palm Beach Dramaworks’ annual playwriting contest

or the fourth year in a row, Palm Beach Dramaworks hosted its annual Young Playwrights 10-Minute Play Contest, open to young playwrights in grades 9-12 throughout Palm Beach County who want to focus and fine-tune their written works. This year, the works of three northern Palm Beach County students were chosen (among seven others) out of 80 submissions: Alexa McCulla, a senior at The Benajmin School (Fall from Grace), and seniors Carlyn Serpone (The Trathe Tribe) and Barrett Vargas (Ghosts of Graduation Past) from Jupiter High School. Each of the 80 short plays was read by a team of professional theater artists and scored on dramatic conflict, characterization, character relationships, research, and creativity, says Gary Cadwallader, director of education and community engagement at Palm Beach Dramaworks. From there, 20 finalists were

chosen, and written suggestions were sent to the finalists who were then given one week to make revisions and resubmit. “Carlyn, Barrett, and Alexa created stories that are universal to the human experience,” says Cadwallader. “They each touched upon an aspect of human conflict that really resonated with the professional theater artists. Barrett wrote about a high school valedictorian reflecting on the oppressiveness of an overbearing and driven parent; Alexa wrote about a young college student presented with a dilemma by a professor she idolizes; and Carlyn wrote about four students sitting around a campfire telling a scary story about a community of people who embrace superstitions.” Each of the 10 winning playwrights had their work read by a professional actor in front of an audience via Zoom in March and received a published anthology of plays and a $250 cash prize. palmbeachdramaworks.org

Sea turtle nesting season: the lowdown

ow through the end of October, thousands of loggerhead, leatherback, and green sea turtle mothers will use our beaches and lower dunes to nest and lay eggs. Last year, Loggerhead Marinelife Center documented more than 16,900 nests and estimate that 800,000 hatchlings were produced from last season alone. Do your part by following LMC’s “Respect the Locals” campaign, which includes keeping your distance from eggs and nests; allowing hatchlings to crawl to the ocean on their own, without your assistance; turning off the lights at your house (artificial lighting can lead sea turtle hatchlings astray); and filling holes on the beach and knocking over sandcastles so hatchlings are not hindered as they journey to the ocean. t is quite an accomplishment to achieve greatness at the highest level of golf. It is even more impressive when you do so while constantly fighting Type 1 diabetes. But seven-time LPGA winner Michelle McGann, 51, has spent a lifetime learning how to live with the disease. “My whole family was shocked when my mom, who is a nurse, gave us the bad news when I was 13,” says McGann, who grew up in Palm Beach County and fell in love with golf at age 7. “We worried that I would never be able to play golf again.

But we soon realized that if we educated ourselves about this disease and managed it carefully, I would be able to pursue my passion and become a professional golfer.” McGann joined the LPGA Tour at age 18 after winning three Florida State Junior Championships and graduating from Rosarian Academy. With her strong, upright swing that had to be tempered on some of the tour’s shorter courses, McGann became a solid player and won many tournaments while struggling with her sugar levels. “I had to guess how much insulin I should take,” she recalls. “I lost the U.S. Women’s Open in 1993 because it went so low, I didn’t know where I was or what I was doing. Fortunately, my dad was with me.” Since those days, detection has improved with new technology—today, McGann wears the Tandem Insulin Pump that works with a Dexcom sensor to control the amount of insulin received. She gets readings on her phone and her wristwatch, and her parents, brother, and husband also see the numbers in case she falls asleep. Her success in the LPGA coupled with product endorsements—she is currently a brand ambassador for JoFit women’s sports apparel—have enabled her to give

back to the community via The Michelle McGann Fund (themichellemcgannfund. com). In 2012, she and her husband, Jonathan Satter— former Secretary of the Department of Management Services for the state of Florida, whom she married in 2010—wanted to do something to help families with diabetic children. “I was lucky to have a nurse for a mom, but that is not the case for everyone,” she says. “We hoped to empower families by giving them support and education. We send kids to camp and give suggestions on proper preventative and treatment protocols.” To raise money for the fund, they host an annual golf tournament at Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, where McGann goes around the course and hits a shot with each child. “I love to see who is benefiting from our foundation, and I can hear the kids tell stories while we golf,” she says. Outside of her foundation work, McGann spends her days taking acrylic painting lessons, where she creates portraits of pelicans, fish, leaves, lobster, crabs, seashells, and her goldendoodle, Teddy. She has also been engaging in back therapy three times a week as rehabilitation from surgery she underwent last year for two herniated discs. She says she is eager to eliminate the back pain so she can resume the Legends Tour, the official women’s senior tour of the LPGA. “I want to play the July tournament in Fairfield, Connecticut and others after that,” she says. “I have spent quality time with my family during the pandemic and was lucky to enjoy the Florida blue skies and ability to be outside. But I am eager to get back to playing golf!” ❖

New Kid on the BLOCK ROBERT “CLAY” KANZLER SHARES HIS LARGE-SCALE OIL PAINTINGS IN A RECENTLY OPENED GALLERY SPACE IN DOWNTOWN STUART

isitors to Stuart’s First Friday gallery walks may have noticed a new artist space during their most recent stroll. RCK Gallery, the first gallery by oil painter and seasonal Stuart resident Robert “Clay” Kanzler, opened its doors in March to add to the already robust downtown art scene. And while his work has been represented by other galleries in places like New York, Detroit, and Boston, Kanzler is looking forward to having his own space to feature other artists and host events and fundraisers. “I can really make a difference with this place, which is so exciting,” says Kanzler. “I can actually move and shake.” He chose Stuart for his gallery location because of its ever-growing community of makers, and he has already begun recruiting local artists for future exhibitions. Kanzler, who grew up between Jupiter Island, Maine, and the suburbs of Detroit, loved to draw as a child and spent his summers attending art school. It wasn’t until age 15, however, that his skills really began to develop. “My mother saw an ad by a professional at the

Center for Creative Studies [in Detroit] who was doing tutorials,” he recalls. “She hired him to do tutorials with me for the summer, and my life was never the same. I was hooked.” After attending Trinity College and Rhode Island School of Design, Kanzler moved to Vermont and began focusing exclusively on oil painting. His large-scale pieces—which average 6 feet-by-6 feet in size— cover a variety of subjects, including portraits of friends and family members (he is a relative of Henry Ford) and seascapes that remind him of his childhood roaming Jupiter Island. There are several recurring elements in his paintings, but each one is unique in its use of lighting and color. “None of my paintings look like I had intended,” he says of his work, which, because of its size, can take the better part of a year to complete. “That’s why I keep painting—they just take on a life of their own.” Over his decades-long career, Kanzler has shared his talents in many ways, volunteering as the artistin-residence for a Vermont high school for 12 years and at a prison for 6 years. He also uses art to share his faith and help those who may be suffering by incorporating their hands, faces, or other features into his artwork as a form of prayer. Says Kanzler: “My artistic dream would be that someone stands in front of one of my paintings and is so touched by God and by his beauty that their life changes—that there’s

an energy to them that can reach out and help someone.” Kanzler splits his time between homes and personal studio spaces in Stuart (where he has had a residence since 2004), Maine, and Vermont. He spends most of his time enjoying the ocean, volunteering, and, of course, oil painting. hether it’s a wedding, a family or school reunion, or some other important event, times like these call for a little extra effort if you want to put your best face forward. Dr. Valerie Barrett of RENU Medical Aesthetics in Tequesta (renuforyou.com) often sees patients who are looking to enhance their natural beauty and bring luminous energy to their faces ahead of special occasions. Here, she offers her advice on how—and when—to prep for the big day. 1 YEAR TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT: This time frame is all about maximizing the benefits of procedures that work with bodily processes like collagen production. Since optimal results are seen with multiple sittings, Barrett says it’s important to get a jump at least six months before the event. She recommends exploring a series of Cool Laser treatments, which employ CO2 lasers to remove damaged skin and stimulate collagen production to treat wrinkles, age spots, and acne scars, as well as tighten skin and even tone. To lift areas that will be shown off in dresses and enhanced by makeup—think the neck, décolletage, chin, or brows—Barrett touts the efficacy of Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound imaging to stimulate natural collagen and elastin production in hypertargeted areas.

6 MONTHS TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE: If you’re considering enhancements like fillers or Botox, Barrett advises doing so a few months prior to the event so there is time to make tweaks if necessary. She notes that her patients are often most pleasantly surprised by the changes they see from filler— small amounts added to the cheekbones can bring joyful youthfulness to the face and brighten the eye area, while applications to the hairline can lift the jaw and corner of the mouth and open the eyes (a bit like the effect you get from wearing a ponytail). 2 MONTHS TO 1 WEEK BEFORE: As the event nears closer, Barrett encourages a conservative approach to skin care, opting for only gentle treatments and at-home regimens. Facials not only brighten, exfoliate, and enhance glow, she says, but they also work wonders on the mind—a bonus if you’re starting to stress a little about the big day. She also advises adding a medical-grade SPF 30 sunscreen to your skin care routine ASAP if you haven’t already. “Studies show that if you do nothing but wear sunscreen for a month, you will see improvements in your skin,” she says. Plus, she notes, using a medical-grade hyaluronic acid serum or gel can help plump the skin instantly. And don’t forget to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. ❖

hen Lauren and Christian Thomas entertain in the backyard of their Jupiter Inlet Colony mid-century modern ranch house near the beach, the relaxed, barefoot vibe feels like home in the best sense of the word. The couple, who grew up in the area—she in Juno Beach and he in Jupiter—are intensely creative and passionate about the life they share with their two children in this idyllic, tiny municipality at the southern tip of Jupiter Island. On a crisp, clear day in March, they sit outside at the long teak table adjacent to the pool sipping margaritas and espresso while their flowered shar-pei, Simon, snoozes under the table. “There’s such a laid-back feeling to life in Jupiter,” says Lauren of their indoor-outdoor lifestyle. “Today, I have no shoes on, and I like leaving the sliding glass doors open and feeling the air from the ocean and seeing the kids go in and out of the house all day.” On this particular day, the soothing strains of a John Coltrane LP spinning on the custom-crafted walnut console in the living room

filter out to the yard, as the Thomases sit for an alfresco lunch prepared by Lauren. Today, she is serving a family favorite: cilantro-lime rock shrimp tacos seasoned with her own blend, drizzled with homemade cilantro-lime sauce, and topped with shredded green cabbage and Cotija cheese. She has also created an artfully arranged charcuterie-style plate of cubed cheeses, nuts, and fresh fruits like kiwi and grapes. The table is an effortless tableau adorned with greenery, colorful fruit, and fresh flowers from the yard. After lunch, 16-year-old Ella gets ready for a volleyball game, as 12-yearold Brayden helmets up, grabs his board, and skates the ramp he helped his dad build in the yard. Through her Instagram (@the.modern.hippie.way) and website (themodernhippieway.com), as well as an upcoming lifestyle book that focuses on cooking, table design, and entertaining, Lauren shares her inspiring vision of domestic bliss and artistry on this island enclave. Music, food, flowers, and decor work in concert to set the stage for stimulating conversation and memorable gatherings, whether it’s just Lauren and her husband, the entire family, or an intimate gathering of friends. a recent edition of Architectural Digest Italy), is responsible for the physical setting of their idyllic life. He transformed their 1958, approximately 2,000-square-foot home into an

oasis that is reminiscent of life in the 1950s and 1960s, when the goal was to enjoy life’s simple pleasures at home with close-knit family and friends. Their combined talents mesh well, Lauren notes: “Christian’s specialty is creating space; mine is making people feel special when they come to our home.” Beach-lover Christian says he discovered Jupiter Inlet Colony when he surfed in the area as a teen and, from then on, decided that this was the ideal place to live. After graduating from Auburn University, he met Lauren, a University of Florida grad, through their fathers, who worked in the same office. Ten years later, the two married at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens—and in 2012, they finally had the opportunity to purchase their dream home in Jupiter Inlet Colony. From the beginning, Christian’s plan for the design was clear. “We wanted to strip it back to the architect’s original vision and open it up to the

outside,” he says. But beyond creating a clean, open, midcentury aesthetic, he and Lauren envisioned a true family home that suited their Jupiter lifestyle—where nothing is off-limits, and everything improves with age and wear. Christian covered the walls with Thomas Melhorn’s proprietary white wax plaster, which develops into a patina with age and never needs to be painted. The furniture is a mix of vintage and custom, much of it upholstered in white, which doesn’t deter them at all. “This was designed to be a beach house at the end of the day,” says Lauren. “A lot of people see the white furniture and think it’s untouched, but we live on it.” Adds Christian: “This is a small house, and every inch is designed to be lived in. There are scars, but in a good way—like the place where Brayden ran his skateboard into the wall. Nothing is too precious to use because, ultimately, your family is most precious, so why would you hold back?” Memories in the making of a rich family life are everywhere. Ella’s favorite part of the house is the living room and its stereo console. “My dad and I come out here at night and, instead of watching TV, we listen to records,” she says. Hanging over the

kitchen table, sheets of rice paper inscribed with love notes in different languages and messages and drawings made by family and friends sprout from a paper chandelier by artist Ingo Maurer. “We rotate the messages every once in a while,” says Christian as he unclips a drawing by a very young Brayden and then, laughing, puts it back. “I have to keep this one up.” Outside, when they’re not plunging in the pool or perfecting a frontside 180 on the skate ramp, the family is likely at the beach, a three-minute walk from their home. Christian surfs and kitesurfs, Brayden skimboards, and Lauren enjoys morning beach walks with Christian and Simon. Ella and her friends like to hang out at the private Jupiter Inlet Beach Club, where Christian volunteers to oversee the grounds and exterior of the two-story building. This foundation of an active, community-centered family life has served them well during the COVID pandemic and, in fact, Lauren feels it has reinforced their quality-over-quantity mantra and brought them closer to what’s important—like family mealtime. “I feel a deep family connection happens over meals,” she says. “I think the kids appreciate every night

when we’re all a family together, so I make a big deal of it. Food is my love language. I want to raise kids who have felt the love of being cared for.” Time at home is precious because during the school year, the kids are in perpetual motion: Brayden, a sixth-grader at The Pine School in Hobe Sound, runs cross-country and plays

lacrosse. Ella, a sophomore at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens, plays varsity volleyball and is also on the travel volleyball team. When they are hanging out at home, there are often friends with them—the Thomas home is a coveted gathering spot, and for good reason. “Whenever my kids’ friends come over, I bring out whatever I have in the cabinets,” says Lauren. “It could be cookies and popcorn, or I might make tacos.” Her talent for setting the stage, which she says comes naturally, was so well-received on her Instagram account that she decided to expand her brand with a lifestyle book (to be published late 2021/early 2022) that showcases her flair for casual, beachy entertaining. “I love inventing, using a night or a meal as a blank canvas and with kids running in and out of the house, jumping in the pool, or playing lacrosse in the yard,” she says. “Even when it’s just my

husband and me, I try to make it fun and different. I don’t want to just open a can of beans. My goal is to inspire people to find joy in the art of cooking see that there’s beauty in it.” Both Lauren and Christian are dedicated to nourishing the roots they’ve planted in Jupiter and protecting the type of smalltown life that is vanishing in many parts of the country. A local history buff, Christian intentionally set up his office in Jupiter’s historic downtown, on Town Hall Avenue, and is devoted to

preserving the area’s rich history. He and Lauren love to ride bikes across the bridge to local restaurants and support small businesses in the area. But there’s nothing quite like the feeling of coming home to their haven in Jupiter Inlet Colony. “As soon as you cross the bridge to the island, it feels like an escape,” says Christian. The iconic lighthouse is a welcoming beacon—literally and figuratively. “At night, the beam sweeps right over our house and reminds us that we live in this truly special place.” ❖

THE OTHERWISE CONSERVATIVE TREASURE COAST IS QUIETLY BECOMING FLORIDA’S CANNABIS HEADQUARTERS

n just a few years, the Treasure Coast might well become an international hub for one of the country’s fastest-growing industries, with a major research center helping to lure start-ups and other companies to the area. This may all sound familiar, but it isn’t about Scripps and the biotech industry. It’s about an industry that is only recently legal but that already employs thousands of people locally: cannabis. “There are deep agriculture roots in Martin and St. Lucie counties, and there’s a potential for this business to be a good economic driver for the foreseeable future,” says Brady Cobb, a graduate of Martin County High School and founder of a cannabis start-up that is now worth multimillions. With a government-supported research lab (the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory) and thousands of acres of farmland that could potentially be converted to grow houses, it seems an area known for its largely conservative culture could soon become home to a not-so-conservative, booming industry.

An attorney with his own law firm, Cobb got into the finance side of the cannabis business in 2012 and also began lobbying in Tallahassee and D.C. for changes to laws surrounding marijuana. His interest in it all was sparked while he was taking care of his ailing father, Clyde Walton “Bill” Cobb, who decades ago became a drug smuggler after an unexpected encounter. He had been on his Pensacola farm one day when a tractor-trailer broke down nearby. The drivers asked the elder Cobb if they could store some things in his barn for a bit; in exchange, they promised him $70,000. Cobb agreed—and that decision served as the first step in becoming a major dealer for Pablo Escobar. Cobb was arrested on smuggling charges in 1983 and served time in prison. Once he was released, he fell ill with prostate cancer, which would eventually take his life in 2010. He smoked marijuana to ease his pain and, seeing how much it helped his father, the younger Cobb decided he wanted to do something to help others. In 2018, he bought a small medical marijuana company, which he renamed One Plant, and began

the task of quickly scaling it up. He started out in 2020 with one dispensary and a small grove in Ruskin on Florida’s west coast. By the end of the year, he had opened seven dispensaries and had built a brand-new, 54,000-square-foot cultivation facility in Indiantown, employing 265 people across the state. Last year, he took the company public, and this past January, he negotiated a merger with Cresco Labs for $213 million in stock. Cobb says it made sense to base his business in the area. From a distribution standpoint, Indiantown is only a couple of hours from both Orlando and Miami. And the local government, he says, “has been a partner, and the support has been tremendous.” Florida’s medical marijuana laws require any company selling marijuana to be vertically integrated, meaning a firm like One Plant must grow the plants and have its own distribution system and retail operation. One Plant’s facility in Indiantown is among the state’s most technologically advanced. The hybrid greenhouse, which sits on a 33-acre farm, houses 10 5,000-square-foot cultivation rooms, each with customizable climate control and adjustable shade or sun systems, depending on what the plants need. The irrigation and fertigation system also can infuse CO2 when the plants need it. Because the greenhouse so closely controls the climate, it can operate in a “perpetual harvest,” meaning that staff harvests and replants one of the flowering rooms every seven days. “Our team takes a tremendous amount of pride in how clean the garden is and how happy and healthy our plants are,” says Cobb, who calls his greenhouse staff a “dream team of cannabis cultivators and purists.” To track how the plants are

doing, the company created a proprietary tech program called AllLeaves. And to get the product to customers, One Plant utilizes an e-commerce platform and a home delivery system. Cobb isn’t the only one who has realized the geographic benefits of the Treasure Coast. One Plant may soon be surrounded by many more cannabis companies, says Roger Brown, CEO and president of ACS Laboratory, which has offices in Boca Raton and a cannabis research facility near Tampa. According to Brown, Martin and St. Lucie counties have the available farmland and existing farmers that the cannabis industry needs. “Driving out to the One Plant facility, you see that it’s surrounded by farmland,” he says. “That land is owned by pretty substantial

corporate growers. All of those farms are revenueproducing, and are they going to make more money growing ornamental flowers or strawberries than they are growing marijuana or hemp?” It’s a rhetorical question. Medical marijuana has only been legal in Florida since 2016, yet the industry recorded more than $1.2 billion in sales last year. By 2030, the industry is expected to hit $6 billion in annual sales here. The industry grew 93 percent in its first year, and Florida now has nearly half a million medical marijuana patients. Fifteen thousand local cannabisrelated jobs were added last year, bringing the number Dirty Lemons, one of Floridians working in the industry to more than of the cannabis strains grown at 30,000. The cannabis industry is so important to the One Plant state that dispensary employees were labeled “essential workers” during the pandemic lockdown. research hub with marijuana cultivation areas, says Jeff Greene, a Fort Lauderdale–based lobbyist for the Florida Hemp Council. Greene suspects that will happen soon, and when it does, it will likely bring even more marijuana, hemp, and CBD companies to the area. This new world of legal cannabis isn’t just about patients who buy medical marijuana and CBD oil at dispensaries to treat ailments. Among the many cannabis-related companies here is Neptune Wellness Solutions, a Canadian company that is in the midst of relocating its headquarters to Jupiter. Neptune specializes in extracting compound cannabinoids from the marijuana plant to be used in products ranging from deodorant to household cleaners, says President and CEO Michael Cammarata. “This plant is a super ingredient,” he says. “It’s going to change beauty items, home items, and the medicine cabinet, all for different purposes.” Cammarata, a Jupiter local, came to this realization about cannabis back when he was CEO of Schmidt’s Naturals. The company was looking for plant-based ingredients that could replace chemicals (like aluminum in deodorant). Research showed that cannabinoids

could be used in many of the products Cammarata’s company produced, but nobody was producing the number of cannabinoids the health and beauty industry needed to make the switch. So in 2019, he invested millions of his own money into Neptune and turned it into a cannabinoid-producing specialist. And it’s clear there is a market for it: Neptune nearly doubled in growth in the past year alone. At Neptune’s new U.S. headquarters in Jupiter, Cammarata will focus on producing cannabinoids that can be used in all kinds of products, while also working on federal and state cannabis legislation and educating Americans on the uses of cannabis as a super ingredient. Even as the Treasure Coast continues to see a boom in the cannabis industry, other parts of the state aren’t yet as welcoming to the growing business. There are more than 270 dispensaries currently operating in Florida today—with about a dozen in Martin and St. Lucie counties alone—but Jupiter, for one, has banned dispensaries within town limits. Cannabis law expert Dustin Robinson says that will likely change soon, citing evidence that “70 percent of Florida voters” support legal dispensaries and that Jupiter residents currently simply travel to Stuart dispensaries or opt to have product delivered to their homes from companies outside of town. The bottom line, says Brown, is that it all comes down to money. As long as marijuana is classified as medicine, the state can’t tax it and get in on what is quickly becoming one of the most profitable industries around. If it is converted to recreational use in the future, that opens up the door for hundreds of millions in tax revenue a year for Florida. That lure of tax revenue is changing what it means to lobby

Durée Ross had been in the publicity business for nearly 20 years when she got a call that stumped her. It was from a real estate developer who was investing in a CBD company, and he needed her help promoting it. She remembers thinking, CBD? As in marijuana? She had little firsthand experience in that area, but for years she had been splitting her time between South Florida and Colorado, so she knew cannabis had already become a big industry in other parts of the country. She quickly assembled her team at Durée & Company and set them on a task: They were to learn everything they could about marijuana, from research and legal issues to the science and what it does to the body. “As a publicist, if you’re selling a product, you have to understand it and you have to believe it,” she says. t’s not often someone can merge two lifelong hobbies into a career path, especially one that allows for so many people to reap the benefits. Jupiter resident Richard Auger has combined his passion for nature and aquatics with photography to create striking images that are sure to convince even the biggest skeptic that Florida is so much more than sky-high palms and grandiose beaches. “There’s so much to Florida that people don’t know exists,” says the 38-year-old photographer. “We have one of the most diverse, beautiful aquifer systems in the world. Photographing Florida—wild and unseen Florida—has allowed me to communicate what this place has meant to me my whole life.” Born and raised in South Florida, Auger grew up swimming in natural springs, scuba diving in the Keys, and fishing with his family. Although he had always been interested in taking photos, his first—and only—official photography training came in the form of a high school darkroom class.

His natural talent was immediately apparent: He won a Gold Key regional award from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers for a black-and-white infrared photo he shot in the Florida Everglades. He went on to attend Florida State University, where he completed a business degree as his passion for photography continued to grow. When he graduated and took his first “adult job” in accounting, his priorities began to shift back to his roots. “I had been doing photography all along for fun, a little something here and there,” he says of the two years he spent working as an accountant. “I did the Winter Park [Sidewalk Art Festival] as an ‘emerging artist,’ and I just blew out everything I brought on the first day. A few months after that, I quit my job and started doing art shows full-time.” His first series as a professional photographer, titled Florida Noir, was shot entirely on black-and-white film from 2010 to 2014 and earned Auger more than $60,000 at juried art competitions. The series includes images from all over the state—from the Panhandle to the Keys, and several rivers and springs in between. “It was a love letter to Florida,” he says. “I shot that series to make art, not to sell it, but it did really well anyway.”

Over his 10-plus-year career, Auger has toggled between film and digital photography, recently adding aerial and underwater equipment to his tool belt. The fresh perspective has allowed him to showcase certain ecosystems— like a coral reef several miles off Dry Tortugas National Park or the hidden creeks of the St. Johns River—in a new and unique way. “There’s a lot to discover out there,” the artist says of his subject matter, which is almost exclusively Florida naturescapes and currently focuses on vibrant colors and panoramic shots captured with digital equipment. “I’ll go out at 4 in the morning and wait for the sun to hit the sabal palms in the middle of nowhere. Linda Gordon is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program and Doctor of Nursing Practice. She has practiced with the leading cardiologists in Pittsburgh for 30 years at Allegheny General Hospital and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). This provided a strong background in acute care and risk reduction for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Raymond Tsao completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and is board-certified in medical oncology, hematology, and internal medicine. His research on pancreatic cancer and lymphoma has been published and presented in national cancer meetings. t’s a family recipe that came from one of my cousins in the Abruzzo region [of Italy],” says Lynn (Lina) Reisigl, who started Jupiter-based Lina’s Crema di Limoncello in 2013 with her late husband, James, and their son, also James. “We originally made it in my kitchen as a hobby. People loved it and started asking for bottles, and we eventually decided to bring it to market.” Her version uses light cream

blended with lemons in a wine base, resulting in a drink with 14 percent alcohol; its smoothness allows it to pair well with both appetizers and desserts. he team at Brick & Barrel Pub brought a new dimension to downtown Abacoa in January with the opening of Duke’s Tacos & Margs. “We wanted to create something that wasn’t solely Mexican in style,” says owner David Schroeder. “We’re focusing on what we call ‘American street tacos,’ which have echoes of Los Angeles and the flavors of our other favorite regions.” The restaurant also reflects the current trend toward more casual restaurants that feature the same quality levels as fine dining establishments. “The pace is quick and fast,” says Schroeder, “and it gives us the opportunity to create a relaxed environment that’s much more fun.”

Thomas Op’t Holt, director of culinary operations, has crafted an innovative menu that begins with a creation called “Fish on Acid.” A new take on classic ceviche, it features shrimp marinated in house-made ketchup and fresh local citrus to boost flavor and octopus slowcooked for tenderness then steeped in juiced jalapeño and cilantro. In addition, raw oysters are available from Washington State, British Columbia, Cape Cod, and Martha’s Vineyard. In preparing tacos, Op’t Holt utilizes the Nixtamal process, which has been popular on the Mexican peninsula for thousands of years. Heirloom corn is first soaked in an alkaline solution before being ground

between volcanic rocks to produce a fluffy mixture with more aroma and flavor. The resulting tacos are easier to digest and higher in nutritional value. The key to the culinary program at Duke’s is flexibility. The initial offering of taco fillings includes prime beef, Texas BBQ brisket, Southern fried chicken, and crispy fish, but Op’t Holt plans on changing the menu frequently to use available fish, meat, and produce in the market. “That’s the advantage of using local and seasonal ingredients,” says Schroeder. “Carnitas are great, but we don’t want to get locked into serving them year-round if some amazing fresh vegetables are available.” Beverage Director Peabo Powell has compiled a cocktail list filled with distinctive margaritas. The most popular are Strawberry Fields (Herradura Blanco, muddled strawberries, lime, rosé, and foam) and #Ghosted (Corazon tequila, lime, agave, mango habanero shrub, and bitters). Powell’s goal is to offer a collection of 150 tequilas and mezcals. In addition, Schroeder has traveled to Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail to source private edition barrels from Bulleit, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, and Heaven’s Door; a personalized barrel of Herradura tequila is also in the works. Wine lovers may feel neglected here, but there’s a healthy selection of craft brews in cans and on tap.
