Everything changed the day I drove Roxanne Pulitzer’s Porsche. I’d just interviewed the socialite and author for a story, and she offered the wheel on our way back to my office. When I hit the gas, my head snapped back like I was on a rodeo horse, and my body pressed so deep into the seat that I thought the car was going to swallow me whole. In the time it took for Pulitzer’s 911 Targa to go from zero to 60, which was about five seconds, I became obsessed with the physics of speed—and with the exhilaration and freedom of a well-made ride. In this travel-themed issue, we salute the summer road trip not only for the memorable destinations but also for the joy of the journey itself. When Neapolitans Brynne Peck and Lani Liuzza visited a Fort Lauderdale boat show two years ago, they got toasty—and creative. “We were so uncomfortable in the sun that we decided to sit down for a minute, and we began to wonder, why are all of us exposed?” Peck recalls. “There were swarms of people shopping for expensive boats who we knew also spent a lot of money on their skin, but their faces, necks, and arms were baking. So we had a glass of wine and took out a notebook to jot down ideas. Sunglasses don’t cover enough, and not everybody wants hat head.” But what these stylish shoppers would want, the friends surmised, was an upscale accessory, not a utilitarian item. “We were inspired by the hardware and roping found on beautiful yachts,” Peck says. Behold Bimini-me, which she calls a “modern expression of the 26
parasol,” made of water-repellent UPF50 [Ultraviolet Protection Factor] sailcloth and named after fabric Bimini tops on boats. The Bimini-me sunshade has a slightly shorter handle and smaller circumference than a golf umbrella so it’s more manageable and less obtrusive, explains Peck, who, like co-designer Liuzza, is originally from Newport, Rhode Island. “Naples has really embraced it. We did a trunk show recently in Port Royal, and people loved them, especially as gifts because they come in a keepsake box.” The entrepreneurial pair are pounding the pavement at outdoor events and selling their practical parasol online. Lauren Demarest and Veronica Kennedy still laugh about being named “Naples Notables” by their teachers when they were classmates at Naples High School. “And now, after both having careers in New York, we’re doing business together in Greece,” Demarest says. The best friends who met their freshman year moved back to Naples after college and then ended up in the Big Apple in 2011, where Demarest was an advertising copywriter and Kennedy worked in operations for an investment bank. Although their professions took different paths, their passion for fitness and travel did not. “Two years ago, we totally fell in love with Greece, but we had a problem finding a great outdoor workout,” Demarest says. “Yoga retreats were days or even weeks long, and we wanted to do more than just go running. The few things we found involved a private session, and we wanted the motivation of a group. Plus, nothing was easy to find online.” Both are avid users of ClassPass,
an app that allows members to book classes at studios in 50 cities with one monthly fee, but Mykonos, Greece, wasn’t on the list. “When you’re on vacation, you still want to have a routine,” Kennedy says. “The trend in fitness is community, and we decided to blend that with tourism and wellness, and build something ourselves.” Sweat Vacay, a website they’ve launched for classes in Mykonos and hope to expand worldwide, allows users to book beach yoga in SantAnna and mat Pilates in Cine Manto, for example. “What makes Sweat Vacay different is that the classes are always outside and taught by local trainers,” Demarest says. “Our mission is to keep the local flavor of every location but take the work out of finding a class and signing up.” (sweatvacay.com) —L.G.

A bespoke African vacation promises AUTHENTIC ADVENTURES and LIFE-CHANGING MEMORIES ANDBEYOND

In their travels across the continent, Andrew Fentiman and his wife, Jacqueline, have encountered male lions in South Africa and met with Samburu warriors in Kenya.
I
n her seminal 1937 book, Out of Africa, Danish author Karen Blixen evokes the romance that attracted generations of adventurers, tourists, wildlife lovers, and animal hunters. “Everything that you saw made for greatness and freedom, and unequalled nobility,” she wrote. Andrew Fentiman personally responded to Africa’s siren call, first as a safari guide in East Africa in the late 1970s and then as founder and president of Safari Consultants of London, based in Southwest Florida. The English-born resident of Bonita Springs draws upon his 40 years of experience to recreate the old-world glamour and style of African journeys for global clients, including celebrities and royals, that showcase the continent’s wildlife and culture. “Most people want to see ‘the big five’ [lions, elephants, leopards, Cape buffalo, and rhinos] and have some kind of cultural encounter with tribes,”

WATERY influences abound in this reimagined Marco Island condo By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Naples Kenny Nothing says sophisticated Florida living like an oceanfront view enjoyed with a glass of Champagne. Savoring life on the water is intrinsic to the Paradise Coast, and it served as inspiration for this whimsical Marco Island renovation. Dawn Harmon, principal at Naples-based Little Palm Design Group, joined forces with fellow interior designer Kirsten Workinger Young to reimagine this circa-2006, three-bedroom, 3,248-square-foot condominium nestled on the twenty-second floor. Their goal: Infuse their clients’ personalities and lifestyle into an open concept. “He is from Finland, so we turned one of the bedrooms into

a sauna,” Harmon explains. “She loves water and sky colors [such as] turquoise, blue, and periwinkle. We used those fresh and clean colors for the palette. The sparkles and bubbles from Champagne were used to create a theme.” This ode to all things aquatic begins in the foyer. An artistic river— fabricated from custom-colored glass tiles that were cast into one piece and set into the existing marble floor—flows from the private elevator entrance. An architectural side table incorporates detailing that resembles a wave and is crowned with seashell statement pieces. Deep-blue walls serve as a counterpoint to the large image of azure waters. The Champagne references also start here, in the faux Italian micro-plaster cloud ceiling finished in a golden hue and accented with a cast-resin bubble chandelier. Intentionally asymmetrical, the bespoke media cabinet in the great room has a driftwood finish and features many storage nooks. For example, pocket doors open to reveal a Champagne refrigerator outfitted
in the same shade of orange as the label on Veuve Clicquot, the owner’s favorite libation. This piece echoes Harmon’s overall intention for the immediate area. “For the great room, they wanted a nesting space,” she says. “The sides turn up on the sectional sofa so they can sort of settle into it.” Harmon demarcated the music alcove from the great room by spotlighting the Steinway baby grand piano. Here, tiny pinholes placed over a preexisting light create the effect of twinkling stars illuminating

the instrument. Horizontal wood separations on the large mirror prevent it from looking like a massive flat surface while still adding reflection and the illusion of space. The kitchen embraces the colors of the ocean and the home’s natural light. The jet-cut glass tile and marble backsplash dances against the white wood cupboards. A trio of barstools boasts periwinkle-colored leather on the inside and an embroidered pattern comprising every
shade in the palette on the outside. An oversized island with a creamy quartzite countertop enables the couple to cook together, while the adjacent wine tower invites festive imbibing. Whether used as party trick or a study in practicality, a dining table fits inside the island and can be pulled out as needed. Lucite ghost chairs complement the table’s high-gloss top and augment the feature’s sense of ease. The formal dining area is a natural extension of the kitchen. A dropped cloud ceiling mimics the clients’ teak table and chairs, while a floating custom credenza covers the length of the back wall. “Geometric diamond cuts, kind of like a puzzle, were used on the wall mirror so it is not a flat piece, and it reflects all of the water back into the space,” Harmon notes. The water imagery continues in the master bedroom, where a woven grass cloth wall is offset by two contemporary nightstands dressed with sea glass knobs and lamps that parrot coral. In the master bath, a cast pierced-resin chandelier with scalloped edges reigns above the porcelain tile and an ottoman upholstered in an indoor/outdoor suede fabric. A glass tile waterfall inset in the walk-in shower increases the luxurious spa-like environment. The powder bath edges toward a more contemporary feel with an unusual vessel sink and a faucet mounted on the mirror. A swimmer print titled “A La Mode” and two images of sliced agate imbue the small

space with a gallery-esque aesthetic. What was once a bedroom is now a spa to relax in before or after using the authentic Finnish cedar sauna fabricated by 41 West in Naples. While the textured tile appears to be limestone, it is actually porcelain. Real pebbles were used in the two horizontal accent bands. From the artistic entry to the soothing spa, this condo celebrates the majestic setting and speaks to the owners’ interests. “For this home, we brought the outside in,” says Harmon. “The design was built around a happy couple who enjoy life together.” «

Experience central China’s natural and man-made marvels aboard the SANCTUARY YANGZI EXPLORER By Paul Rubio
F
rom the Amazon to the Irrawaddy, upscale river cruising is opening access to locales once limited to backpackers willing to rough it off the beaten path. In China, the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer fills this niche, presenting a luxury-spiked voyage through the most scenic stretch of the 3,915-mile Yangtze River, the longest in Asia. Between the port cities of Yichang and Chongqing, the all-balcony, 38-cabin, 24-suite vessel snakes through the narrow canyons and mountainous splendor of central China’s Three Gorges. And whether choosing the three-night itinerary upstream or the fournight itinerary downstream, both the destinations and the journey leave lasting impressions. Throughout it all, travelers are exposed to the striking contrasts of today’s China—the good and the bad. Start with an excursion to the Three Gorges Dam Project near Yichang. The world’s largest hydroelectric power structure and its turbine, lock, and ship-lift excess is an

engineering wonder that makes the Hoover Dam look like child’s play. However, between construction and reservoir flooding, it has displaced 1.3 million people, forever altering the physical, cultural, and ecological landscapes of central China. This change is most palpable when ogling the juxtaposition of drab, Tetris-stacked monoliths comprising “new cities” against the sparkling bridges connecting both sides of the Yangtze. On an excursion along the Shennong Stream, a smaller ferryboat ventures deep into Avatar-like scenery, where high among the mist-shrouded limestone cliffs lie hanging coffins of the Tujia people, an ethnic minority that calls this region home. A traditional sampan (open-air wooden boat) ride follows, led by the last generation of local fishermen who delight through song and storytelling in hopes of keeping their customs alive. Another day, cruisegoers are privy to a guided market tour in Fuling—try a hundred-year egg, if you dare—succeeded by a visit to a national library for a heritage-rich afternoon. Look forward to tea ceremonies, cal-
ligraphy demonstrations, the sounds of the Chinese zither, and bian lian (facechanging) performances that reflect a China of yore. The journey, too, mirrors a theme of contrasts. With the largest room product on the river and a trustedbrand backing, the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer is regarded as the most luxurious cruise on the China market. The ship was even dry docked in 2017 for a refurbishment to reflect modern Chinese design with textiles, artwork, and furnishings sourced from area vendors. While the refresh is most visible in the guest rooms and dining room, worn hallways, paint-chipped exteriors, and several dowdy common spaces reveal an incomplete facelift. Not to say this isn’t the finest ship on the Yangtze—it is. But, it’s nowhere near the league of the high-end river cruise products found in Europe, the Amazon, or the

Mekong, so set expectations accordingly. In addition, the ship caters mainly to Chinese tourists, most of whom have booked on an à la carte basis. This can create some confusion for both staff and passengers who’ve reserved sailings marketed through the United States and Europe in which all meals, beverages, and excursions are included. What the ship sometimes lacks in overall finesse, it makes up for with onboard programming. Rise and shine daily to tai chi lessons, make dumplings with the chef, and attend lectures on Chinese arts and crafts, foot reflexology, and traditional medicine. Opt for multiple treatments in the surprisingly affordable spa, where the therapists are remarkably dexterous. Commentary is also excellent when it matters most. Guests are called outside for the separate breathtaking crossings through the Xiling, Wu, and Qutang gorges to learn about their historical importance while admiring the natural grandeur sandwiched between emerald cliffs. It’s times like these that the ship’s imperfections disappear, when the jaunt down this river less traveled begins to surface as one that makes the trek to the other side of the globe totally worth it. Oh, you didn’t hear that two of television’s most popular shows ended this past spring? Oops, sorry for the spoiler. It seems fewer of us are buying majestic 7 Series BMWs in preference to the three-row X7 SUV. Sales of Cadillac’s lovely CT6 sedan pale in comparison to the Escalade. Mercedes’ tasteful S-Class? A fraction of what the XXL-sized GL-Class sells. But there’s still something appealing about a sleek, low-to-theground high-end sedan. It might come down to ease; there’s a simple pleasure in a ride that doesn’t require a ladder to climb into nor a captain’s license to maneuver through the Trader Joe’s parking lot. 54
Feast your eyes on Audi’s newest flagship A8—the redesigned, fourth-generation 2019 A8 L quattro—and tell me you don’t love its classic, black-tie look and restrained, dignified elegance. Okay, I’ll relent: Audi may have gone a little overboard on the “restrained” bit. Positioning this new Audi alongside its predecessor is a bit like seeing the Hemsworth brothers together. Is that Liam? Or maybe Chris? No, definitely Liam. Heck, I don’t know. Every body panel has been changed, though you might not immediately know it. What’s hard to miss, however, is that enlarged angular front grille, the bigger wheel openings covering gorgeous 20-inch rims, and the resculpted rear end. And trust me, you’ll want to splurge on the “dynamic lighting package,” which comes with a rear-end light show worthy of Las Vegas on the Fourth of July. Using new OLED technology, the full-width rear lights respond to you locking or unlocking the car by performing a choreographed dance that’s pure Disney. To heighten its flagship status, Audi is only offering this A8 in longwheelbase form. Smart move. Stepping into the back of this stretched limo is guaranteed to induce more oohs and aahs than sinking into a warm bath. The amount of space is amazing. Cross your legs and your feet still won’t come anywhere near the seat in front. And talk about

Volkswagen I.D. Buzz All you tie-dye hippies and children of the ’60s, rejoice: Volkswagen is bringing back the legendary microbus. And this time, it’s going to be an eco-friendly, all-electric version. Reaction to the VW I.D. Buzz concept van at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show was so passionately positive that Volkswagen execs have finally given the go-ahead to a production model that’ll land at dealerships in 2022. Just like VW’s upcoming Buggy, the I.D. Buzz will have its batteries mounted under the floor powering a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, with the option of another electric motor up front to make it all-wheel drive. Depending on battery size, VW is talking about a zero-emission range of between 200 and 340 miles. And as with the original, it’ll be an ideal beach hauler, with space inside for up to eight and room on the roof to carry as many surfboards as you need. Roll on 2022, dude.

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz was inspired by the beloved VW bus that first emerged on the scene in 1950. But while that version only offered 30 hp, this new model boasts 369 hp from a duo of electric motors. Another bonus is the battery, which can regain roughly 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes using a patented VW fastcharging system. That translates to more time on the road and lounging at the beach.

Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric, drop-top Smart cabriolet might not be good for too many things—a range of just 57 miles sees to that. But as far as Florida beach cruisers go, it’s just about perfect for zipping around Naples. Much of its appeal comes down to its charming, cartoonish look, from its smiley-face grille to its wide-as-it-is-long stance. As a city car it’s a delight to drive; step on the throttle and it scoots off the line like a spooked gecko before whirring along in near silence. See that prime beachfront parking space and you’re nabbing it, courtesy of the Smart’s minuscule 9-foot length and astonishing 22.8-foot spin-on-a-dime turning radius. Inside there’s room for two and a teeny trunk that will swallow a couple of beach bags. Sadly, Mercedes will stop importing Smarts to the United States by the end of this year, but there will be plenty on dealer lots for the foreseeable future. Grab one while you can.

Volkswagen I.D. Buggy No doors, no roof, no worries. That’s the idea behind Volkswagen’s new, take-it-to-the-beach I.D. Buggy, a contemporary spin on the VW-based dune buggies of the swinging ’60s. But instead of an old Beetle motor, this one is bang up-to-date with electric power. While Volkswagen is calling the Buggy a concept, word is there are firm plans to have it in production within the next couple of years. Using Volkswagen’s innovative MEB electric skateboard chassis, the Buggy comes with a 62kWh battery pack and a 200-hp electric motor. That’ll get you from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and up to 155 miles on a single charge. VW designers have captured the look and feel of the original Meyers Manx beach buggy, with its sweeping curves, angled windshield, and lack of doors. The entire interior is made from waterproof materials for hose-it-out cleaning, with a basic canvas top to protect against that stray shower. Originally designed as a military vehicle for the British army, the modern Moke has taken on a chic life all its own. The electric version is supremely customizable and available in an array of colors as well as camouflage. Prices for a new Moke start at $17,975.
Full disclosure here: This is my personal 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. I’ve owned it for more than 20 years, and for 20 years it has been the best beach cruiser on the planet—and the biggest head-turner. If your budget can’t accommodate a $300,000 lime-green Lamborghini convertible, a $20,000 ’76 Eldorado convertible will garner just as many dropped jaws and selfie snaps. This car is so huge—stretching more than 18 feet—it practically warrants its own zip code. You don’t so much park it as dock it, preferably with the help of several small Smart cars acting as tug boats. But nothing compares to the way I feel driving this thing top down, six passengers squeezed on the two big Barcalounger-like bench seats, and a little Jimmy Buffett on the stereo. While a monster 500-cubic-inch, 8.2-liter V-8 powers this beast, it surely runs on molasses because it’s so whisper-quiet and refined. We won’t talk about fuel economy, however. Purchase a restored or well-looked-after example for around $20,000, and every trip to the beach will become a joy ride.
Fiat 500 Spiaggina In 1958, the Fiat 500 Jolly was the coolest, cutest beach cruiser money could buy. Italian playboy and Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli commissioned Turin coachbuilder Ghia to slice the top off a pint-sized Fiat 500 and create a runabout for him to carry aboard his 82-foot sailing ketch, the Agneta. Ghia went on to forge another 400, and potential owners can expect to spend up to $100,000 for an original. Or you could order a brand-new Jolly from Garage Italia Milano, owned by Agnelli’s charismatic grandson, Lapo Elkann. Based on the latest Fiat 500, the 500 Spiaggina—a name derived from the Italian word for beach—is brimming with la dolce vita. Taking cues from a classic ’50s speedboat, the windshield has been cut down, the front seats replaced by a bench covered in two-tone, waterproof leather, and carpeting has been updated with nautical cork decking. And don’t forget the built-in spray shower for a quick spritz before aperitifs. 66

WaterCar Panther Is it a car that thinks it’s a boat? Or a boat that wants to be a car? Amazingly, the California-built WaterCar Panther is pretty impressive at being both. On land, it looks and drives like a stretched Jeep Wrangler, capable of speeds up to 55 mph. When it comes time to tread water, the Panther will splash right in and part the waves at up to 44 mph. Power comes from a rear-mounted 3.7-liter 305-hp VTEC Honda V-6 that drives either the back wheels or a marine water jet. Not enough might? One owner had the company install a 500-hp 6.2-liter Corvette V-8. Once in the water, pull back on a lever to make the wheels retract into the glass-fiber body and engage the jet drive—a feat achieved in 15 seconds. If there was a template for the perfect beach cruiser, it would be Jeep’s rugged Wrangler. Any Wrangler, in fact. From a cheap and cheerful “beater” off Craigslist, to the shiniest 2019 version, the Wrangler is the most fun open-top four-seater on the market. But this latest model—the one Jeep aficionados lovingly refer to as the JL—is a huge step up in terms of comfort, refinement, and quality. While it boasts a taller body and a longer wheelbase, it looks the same as before; anything too radical would have caused Jeepsters to riot in the streets. Under the hood, the standard engine is still the 3.6-liter V-6, but now there’s also a highly appealing 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor with some serious muscle. Couple this with a smoother ride, better transmission shifts from a new 8-speed automatic, and a massive improvement in interior trim, and the latest Wrangler is hard to resist.

Vanderhall Venice Want to draw attention like a Meghan and Harry sighting at J. Crew? Then head to the beach in a Vanderhall. These blast-to-drive, open-top three-wheelers are the creation of Provo, Utah–based Vanderhall Motor Works. Imagine the thrill of riding a motorcycle but sitting securely in a glass-fiber body with your passenger alongside. These are true pieces of automotive art, with craftsman quality and stunning detailing. Power comes from a trusty General Motors 1.4-liter four-cylinder cranking out 180 hp and spinning the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic. And boy, are they fast. Zero-to-60-mph sprinting takes just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph. Prices kick off at around $27,000 for the single-seater Venice Speedster, but there are no fewer than seven Vanderhall models to choose from, including an all-electric version, the Edison. As a beach cruiser, it does, however, have one fundamental flaw: a shortage of storage. But a towel and a tube of sunscreen will fit just fine. «

Even before retiring with a Super Bowl ring in 2005, former St. Louis Rams guard Tom Nutten was passionate about food and wine. “I’ve always been a self-proclaimed foodie,” he admits. “I enjoyed experimenting at home on family and friends, and I always felt there was a better meal just around the corner.” Nutten fell in love with Spanish cuisine during a visit in 2013 and opened his eatery, Lamoraga, a year later. Inspired by a restaurant in the southern region of Andalusia, the Naples Lamoraga serves a menu of classic items such as octopus, garlic shrimp, Catalan seafood stew, and Paleta Iberico Bellota ham.

While paella (pictured) is the best-selling dish, Nutten is partial to the Piri-Piri swordfish. Chunks of fish are marinated in a sauce of mild capsicums, olive oil, and spices, then skewered with onions and red bell pepper, and served over soft polenta and sautéed arugula. Beyond the Schmear Don Quixote tilted at windmills; displaced New Yorkers search for an authentic bagel. At times, both quests seem doomed to disappointment and failure. The truth is, an authentic bagel is in the eye of the beholder. Ever since it originated in the Jewish community of Krakow, Poland, in 1610, the bagel has spread around the world, morphing in the process. Residents of the Big Apple may believe they have a monopoly on it, but there are many styles to choose from—Montreal, Chicago, East Coast, and London, to name a few. While they’re now available in supermarkets and on breakfast buffets at chain hotels, those items are nothing more than clumps of white bread molded into the shape of a bagel. And in all honesty, it’s not easy to find an authentic bagel in Manhattan anymore, either. Two Naples establishments are ahead of the curve. At Straight from New York Bagels (straightfromny.com), transplanted New Yorker Kurt Sexton has been turning out 18 varieties, including bialys, since 2007. There’s a similar story at Brooklyn Dough with a Hole (239-231-3159). Steve Batitsas opened the Naples outpost in 2017 following 25 years operating five bagel shops in New York and New Jersey. Both Sexton and Batitsas follow the traditional method of boiling before baking. Aficionados will tell you that only two things truly matter when it comes to bagels: They shouldn’t be more than an hour or two out of the oven and should always be consumed untoasted. When should you toast a bagel? Only when it’s stale.

ALL-DAY FIESTA The next generation of Mexican cuisine arrived in Naples in February with the opening of Rocco’s Tacos in the former Masa space at Mercato. Exuberant owner Rocco Mangel launched his first location in West Palm Beach in 2007 and now operates eight in Florida as well as one in Brooklyn. Just how exuberant is he? Mangel’s trademark move is to jump on top of the bar and dispense shots of tequila to get the party started. Theatrics aside, he’s really a purist. “We assembled our recipes during travels throughout the U.S. and Mexico,” says Mangel, who also logged stints at a few L.A. food trucks for background and experience. “Everything is made fresh daily, and we use the freshest ingredients possible.” That commitment is reflected in the house-made sour mix, customizable gua-
camole prepared tableside, and handmade tortillas cooked on a traditional Savor creative tacos in a high-energy atmosphere. Mexican comal, or flat griddle. The menu boasts something for everyone, from chorizo and carne asada to healthier choices and vegetarian dishes. Other than freshness, Mangel’s obsession is tequila. More than 300 varieties are offered, from entry-level choices to bottles selling for well over $1,000. His personal favorite is Clase Azul Reposado, although he’s been known to reward lucky customers with shots of Patron. Last October, the Naples Bay Resort & Marina transformed their Catalina Café into Café on the Bay, with an emphasis on the famed family-owned coffee brand founded in Turin in 1895. TAMING OF THE SCREW In recent years, winemakers and consumers alike have warmed up to the concept of the screwcap

orks have been the preferred method of sealing wine and spirits bottles for centuries. After the Industrial Revolution replaced mouth-blown glass bottles with the cheaper machinemade versions, corks became uniform in size and even more popular. Over time, they’ve evolved to represent part of the mystique of the wine-drinking experience. It’s no wonder then that screwcaps were immediately viewed as the red-headed stepchildren of the wine world when they first appeared. Many consumers looked down on them, associating the screwcap with subpar libations, such as Boone’s Farm, best enjoyed in convenience store parking lots. That image gradually changed as quality wine from Australia and New Zealand flooded the American market; before long, some unassuming California wineries were also adopting alternative closures.

The issue of cork taint accelerated the acceptance of the screwcap. No one seems to know exactly where this fault came from, but it rendered wine undrinkable. Napa’s PlumpJack Winery (which also owns two other esteemed properties: Odette and Cade) estimated that as many as 8 percent of wine bottles sealed with cork were ruined by taint. In 2000, PlumpJack took the radical step of bottling half of its 1997 Reserve Cabernet in screwcap and half in cork. For the first time, consumers were offered the opportunity to pay $150 for a wine with a screwcap closure, and it paved the way for other top estates to follow suit. (PlumpJack continues to bottle half of its Reserve output that way, along with a portion of its estate wine.) The jury is still out on the question of how well screwcap wines age relative to their cork counterparts. The University of California at Davis conducted a study on 600 bottles of Cade Sauvignon Blanc, and after

five years found little difference between the bottles sealed with cork, synthetic cork, and screwcap. There have been numerous informal tastings of the 1997 PlumpJack Reserve Cabernet that compare the two closures side by side after intervals of 10 to 15 years. In every case where the wines were tasted blind, participants found the screwcap version to be fresher and more vibrant. I recently had the opportunity to sample the 2016 estate Cabernets from Cade ($110), Odette ($155), and PlumpJack ($145), all bottled under screwcap. The deeply colored, mountain-grown Cade had a fragrant nose redolent of boysenberry jam. It was rich and concentrated in the mouth, with a panorama of dark berry flavors and hints of crushed herbs. The addition of 12-percent Petit Verdot and 7-percent Malbec added to the wine’s texture and stiff tannins. Odette, from a 45-acre vineyard in the Stags Leap district, was virtually opaque and nearly black. The cool, refreshing nose yielded whiffs of minerals, anise, black plums, and mint. Despite its fierce concentration, it was also graceful and balanced, with supple tannins and a fine herbal edge. Good acidity offset the wine’s viscous texture, and the exceptionally long finish resonated with an assortment of black fruits. The nose of the flagship PlumpJack Cabernet was clean and fresh,
with recessed aromas of dark berries and new oak. On the palate, notes of ripe blackberries mingled with mocha and baking spices. The medium-bodied texture was accented by pinpoint acidity, and the wine was an absolute pleasure to drink—far more so than many Napa Cabernets at the same or higher price. While we don’t know how these wines will age, there’s much to recommend now. We’ve come a long way from the convenience store parking lot. «

How to HYDRATE Here’s a familiar scenario for Floridians: It’s time for your daily power walk or golf outing, but it’s 92 degrees and 100-percent humidity. The key to weathering the weather? Proper hydration. NI asked Barbara Lewin, a Naples-based registered dietician, sports nutritionist, and integrative nutritionist, for guidance. “Fluid needs vary based on your size, level of training, environment, and fitness level, so it’s important to know your individual sweat rate,” she says, adding that fluid intake should be about the same as your loss from sweating. Dehydration or a decrease in weight of 2 percent can affect performance, and further losses can lead to serious heat illness. To determine sweat rate, weigh yourself before working out. Keep track of the fluids you drink, and then weigh yourself after the workout. Do this on several occasions with different workouts to determine your sweat rate. For every pound lost, consume 2 to 3 cups of fluid, Lewin says. Keep in mind that drinking plain water may not be adequate. “When we sweat, we’re not just losing water but also electrolytes,” she explains. “Diluting the sodium concentration in the body can result in hyponatremia. If working out for more than an hour, I usually recommend some type of electrolyte replacement. This can be done with foods that are good sources of potassium and sodium along with fluids, or you can use a sports drink.” For those who prefer to bypass the commercial variety, Lewin shares an easy recipe here. What’s the most important item of equipment for any female athlete? Her sports bra, of course. But for a sports bra to do its job well (i.e. provide comfort, support, and confidence) you’ll need to start with a proper fitting with a trained professional, advises Russ Kozar, owner of Fleet Feet in the Bell Tower Shops, Fort Myers. A perfect fit is in the DNA of this specialty running and walking shop, renowned for expertly measuring athletic shoe size. “We interview each customer,” Kozar says. “You want to know what activities they’re going to be doing. Do they have any preferences? Do they like padding? Underwire? We get training through corporate [and have] a series of videos on bra fitting. Once you learn and constantly do it, it’s an easy process to do a couple of measurements. Then we talk about the levels of support.” Sports bras fit differently than everyday bras because they are more compressive and used for a specific activity. “Many women wear a band that’s too big or a cup that’s too small,” adds Kozar. “If the band isn’t tight enough it’s not going to support. If the cup is too small it’s not going to contain. It can be difficult to do it on your own.” Once you’ve made the selection, be sure to take good care of the sports bra so that it takes good care of you. Few live shows inspire the same sense of awe as those by Cirque du Soleil. Since forming in 1984, the Montreal-based entertainment group has grown from a team of 20 street performers to a traveling troupe of 1,400 artists from more than 50 countries. From July 17 to 21, this “Circus of the Sun” will take up residence at Hertz Arena in Estero to introduce audiences to the wonder of Corteo. The narrative follows Mauro the Dreamer Clown as he observes and participates in his own funeral procession. Despite this macabre concept, Corteo presents a joyous, carnival-like atmosphere, one filled with floating angels, leaping acrobats, and death-defying stunts executed on poles, teeterboards, beds, and even chandeliers. Comedian Carlos Mencia will take the Off the Hook Comedy Club stage July 5-7. Born in Honduras and raised in the United States, Mencia got his start on the Los Angeles stand-up circuit and went on to appear on television shows such as In Living Color and Moesha. His career took off during the 2000s, when he headlined the successful “The Three Amigos” comedy tour and made his pop-culture breakthrough as the star of Mind of Mencia, which aired on Comedy Central between 2005 and 2008. was so enamored with the Paradise Coast that, in 1992, she bought a home in Naples for frequent getaways with family and friends. A fourth-generation Oklahoman whose greatgrandparents were pioneering ranchers, the luxury real estate professional has embraced the local philanthropic scene. She co-chaired the Naples Winter Wine Festival, which supports the Naples Children & Education Foundation, in 2007 and 2014.
