She captured this vibrant February afternoon as a featured plein-air artist in the annual Canvas on Third fundraiser. “I chose hot pinks to represent the generosity and heartfelt support in our community for so many helpful organizations,” she says. A graduate of Cornell University, Wesselmann has “painted through revolutions in Third World countries to ambassadorial soirees in the capitals of Europe, from exotic bazaars to French cafes.” Her work is represented in local galleries.

hat a difference a year makes. Where to start? I never thought that I would see the day that charities in Naples, Florida—one of the most philanthropic communities in America—would be struggling, but, then again, no one could foresee any of the things that began to unfold in early 2020. We started publishing the Naples Charity Register 20 years ago to fill a community need. As Naples was growing, so were the needs of the less fortunate. The community’s philanthropic spirit swelled and numerous nonprofit organizations were sprouting. Support organizations were forming for everything from medical needs, abuse, mental illness, veterans, legal aid, scholarships, and animal welfare to art and historical preservation. We wanted to provide you with a comprehensive guide so that when it was time to follow your own passion and choose which organizations you could help to make a difference, you had it at your fingertips. This year, with so many businesses closed, the needs have grown considerably. As I witness the daily struggles of charities and event chairs grappling with “how to make it work” in a world where we can’t gather in large groups to break bread, I have been most impressed with the community’s creativity. Formed out of desperation to fill the need, innovative initiatives of all sorts have popped up, from virtual live bidding sites to help you feel the energy of the crowd, drive-in events where you never have to leave the security of your car, swag bags delivered to your home with the bidding paddles along with the ingredients for the perfect cocktail (the proven ingredient for higher bidding!), and full-blown dinner kits for two home-delivered in preparation for an online, live cooking demonstration. The challenge is real. Don’t let the fact that several in-person events are a bit delayed this year hinder your donations. They are needed more than ever. Do what you have always done to keep the momentum going! Ditch the yoga pants and go to Marissa’s or Waterside Shops and buy that dress. Set up an appointment and have Philip Douglas or Epiphany Salon give you that glamorous look that makes you feel beautiful or handsome, adorn your dining room table with an arrangement from the Garden District, then call Charlie McDonald and have him capture your portrait—you will forget you are anywhere but The Ritz! Yes, I may sound like I am offering shameless plugs, but buying local is another great way to support our community. We have changed our format a bit this year to accommodate the changing world of philanthropy, incorporating various fundraising opportunities, not just the in-person events. Now, more than ever, charitable organizations are relying on Naples’ phenomenal philanthropic spirit.

he Naples Charity Register is a 20-year tradition introduced to the Collier County community by the publisher of Naples Illustrated to showcase the effervescent events and invaluable impact of local charitable organizations and passionate philanthropists. This year’s issue is a bit different than past, loyal readers and contributors will see. Because this year, of course, is different. We all are operating under a new normal with a set of rules that continues to be rewritten by the novel coronavirus. The pandemic has dramatically altered our daily lives and the operations of the 440 nonprofits that work tirelessly to make this a stronger, more vibrant community. Each one has been challenged financially and operationally, and each continues to redefine ways to push forward in their missions. This year, the Naples Charity Register is focused on the community’s resilient response to the pandemic. We talk with the major foundations that kept struggling residents and nonprofits afloat amid dire financial times (page 16) and the social service agencies that pivoted overnight to provide their services (page 18). We celebrate how the local business community united to assist frontline personnel and their own employees (page 26). We examine the seismic shift in education (page 20) and the hard-hit performing arts community (page 64). We also look ahead, through the 55-plus charity listings (page 37), which highlight how these organizations are moving forward with special events—in-person, virtual, or combined—and fundraising appeals and campaigns. And because we all need a little glamour and sparkle in our lives, we have included another tradition: a dazzling, nature-themed jewelry spread (page 30) that emboldens through beauty. Typically, these pages are brimming with social photos, but they are reduced this year, reflecting the fact that large gatherings were canceled by spring 2020. We have included social photos in the charity listings featuring seasonal soirees from organizations participating in this year’s charity listings. We hope you are inspired to continue supporting the causes that are most important to you. The community needs to continue rowing together today to positively shape tomorrow’s new normal.

#StrongTogether FOUNDATIONS AND PHILANTHROPISTS UNITE ON PANDEMIC AID by Cathy Chestnut

OVID-19 was a fast-moving crisis from the beginning. True to form, Naples’ top foundations and philanthropists joined forces to provide immediate emergency relief to residents and operational support for many of the 440 local nonprofits that serve as Collier County’s social safety net. Responding to a disaster is not new for the Community Foundation of Collier County, which set up disaster relief funds for Hurricane Irma in 2017 and the red-tide crisis in 2018, and has become what Community Foundation President/CEO Eileen Connolly-Keesler calls “the community’s philanthropic first responder.” The Community Foundation’s board established the Collier Comes Together Coronavirus Relief Fund, which collected $1.5 million in donations. The fund was initially lifted by board member do-

nations and a $350,000 gift from the Brynne & Robert Coletti Fund of the Farmer Family Foundation. It was a serendipitous surprise, Connolly-Keesler says, because it was the first time the Coletti Fund had contacted her organization, and it made a huge difference. “It helped us in fundraising in the early weeks,” she says. “That was a lifesaver for our community in many ways.”

EXPEDITING DOLLARS What’s remarkable about Collier County is the way the major foundations collaborate. The Community Foundation was in constant contact with the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, and other Southwest Florida foundations to assess critical needs, avoid duplication, and coordinate response. The United Way of Collier and the Keys

was also actively involved in the response network. “There was a very coordinated effort in the region—it was huge,” Connolly-Keesler says. “The silver lining, if there is such a thing, was that as funders, we have developed tighter relationships, and that will continue on.” Foundations typically fund specific programs. As it became obvious that nonprofits’ financial resources were drying up, the grantors switched gears to provide funding for operating costs. The Schulze Foundation moved up its scheduled board meeting so it could immediately distribute approximately $3 million in grants, says Mary Beth Geier, the foundation’s Florida director. “Our board recognized that agencies may have greater needs and concerns outside of their general programs and we wanted to give them an opportunity to ask for funds in a different fashion so they could

best serve the community,” she says. In addition to its spring grantmaking, the Schulze Foundation issued another $1 million in emergency funding for regional organizations providing basic needs, and established the Best Buy COVID-19 Relief Fund for laid-off and furloughed Best Buy employees. The League Club also freed up more than $400,000 in virus-related grants to 44 area nonprofits for operational costs. “We’re proud to be flexible enough to address this need,” says League Club President Gigi Stewart. The 2020 Naples Winter Wine Festival was a record-breaking event with its largest attendance, generating the highest proceeds in its 20-year history. When the NCEF’s Grant Awards Ceremony in March was cancelled, the organization proceeded with the issuance of more than $20 million in grants to 43 nonprofits and agencies, including the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, St. Matthew’s House, Legal Aid Services of Collier County, and Friends of Foster Children Forever.

SUPPORTING NCH Collier Comes Together also included the NCH Healthcare System Matching Grant Challenge. The Community Foundation’s initial $25,000 was immediately matched with $25,000 by NCH Board Trustee Bill Allyn through his donor-advised Bill and Penny Allyn Fund administered by the Community Foundation. Donations totaling $273,825 were earmarked for protective equipment, sanitizing robots, testing supplies, ventilators, and other resources. Other top donors to the challenge grant included the Robert J. Eaton Fund at $100,000 and The Brookdale Foundation Group at $50,000. “It’s absolutely incredible how the community has rallied and supported the health system. NCH is here for the community, but the community has

really rallied for NCH,” says NCH spokesperson Amanda Lucey. “This is going to be an ongoing health-care concern.”

PLANNING AHEAD Looking forward, Connolly-Keesler says, the major foundations and agencies, such as United Way, will continue to work together. But, she says, there is a real need to establish a dedicated disaster-relief fund, and the Community Foundation is working toward that goal as part of a new capital campaign. Collier Comes Together “raised $1.5 million, which is great, but it would have been better to have it readily available,” Connolly-Keesler says. “We need to make sure we have money in the bank to make sure we can move quickly for any disaster that comes our way.” NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

By Cathy Chestnut COVID-19 was a jarring awakening, but just as each of us learned to navigate the new reality, so have Collier County nonprofits. Local social service agencies tackled some of the deepest, most urgent pandemic-fueled issues. They made sweeping changes to provide critical services, finding that some adaptations will remain staples of their operations. “Everyone got forced to be in this world we’re living in,” says David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health CEO Scott Burgess. “With all of us, we’re building the boat as we row.” Food insecurity skyrockets with pandemic-related job and income loss.

Essential Relief The Salvation Army of Collier County immediately streamlined its online application process for gift cards for food and essential supplies, and for rent and utilities assistance. The 24/7 system allows applicants to upload hardship documents without missing work or standing in long lines, and for requests to be quickly vetted for a fast turn-around. It’s a process the Salvation 18

Army and United Way of Collier and the Keys will continue to use as they partner to distribute the county’s CARES-funded Rent and Mortgage Assistance Program. The Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida faced a 40 percent increase in food need amid school closings, job and income losses, and disruptions in food-supply channels. From March to late June, it distributed almost 11 million pounds of food through 150 Southwest Florida partner agencies. The food bank launched drive-through distribution sites and ramped up its volunteer force to staff them. Harry’s Helpings shelf-stable food kits providing 15 well-rounded meals—originally designed to be distributed through public schools—were instead distributed at the drive-throughs. The food bank staggered volunteer shifts and bought an additional warehouse conveyor belt to expedite sorting.

Focus on Mental Health Virtually overnight, the David Lawrence Center, Collier County’s only comprehensive mental health center, went from having two telepsychologists to 100. “It was a really amazing response in challenging circumstances,” says Burgess.

The David Lawrence Center provided a full continuum of services virtually for families and individuals of all ages, including doctor consultations and case management. New clients can now apply online and be evaluated for services, a process that required an in-person office visit in the past. Some services simply couldn’t move online, such as inpatient admissions, residential recovery, the pharmacy, and in-home client visits. The biggest challenge was ironing out solutions for those who don’t own devices or have internet access. Computer-access areas were established on the David Lawrence campus where clients could link up with their doctors and counselors. “We’re trying everything we can to mitigate issues and support people the way they need to be supported,” he says. “I think everybody is adjusting pretty well to the new normal, our clients and our staff.” Overall, he says, the tele-solution, whether through a monitor or on the telephone, has been highly effective for 75 percent of clients. The other 25 percent “have more significant challenges and difficulty.” Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse were exacerbated by the pandemic—and are expected to rise—due to fear, uncertainty, and

financial duress. PTSD and burnout in health-care workers increased, while 60 percent of mothers caring for children reported elevated stress, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. David Lawrence is “definitely providing many more services than the year before going into COVID,” Burgess notes. By late June, it was providing 17,000 more services than 2019 and had admitted 1,300 new clients from March to June. Inpatient treatment soared, maxing out capacity. Many had already been dealing with moderately treated or untreated mental health and substance addiction issues that were compounded by isolation and stress, he says. Online intake and tele-counseling will remain a mainstay for clients who prefer it. Burgess learned how to continue public education and outreach. He’s hosted virtual presentations for community groups ranging from 10 to 100.

David Lawrence also launched a multi-pronged marketing campaign to spread the news about the expanded online services—and remind residents they don’t have to struggle alone. “We need to stay focused on the issues and the outcomes that treatment can bring, and continue to raise awareness of how beneficial treatment is to individuals, families, and communities,” Burgess says. “We need to keep focused in these unusual times.” NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Seismic Transitions Traditional, environmental, and specialized education in Collier County make a monumental, all-virtual shift to fulfill their missions BY KELLY J. FARRELL

At the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic, Collier County’s educational and environmental institutions and nonprofits speedily pivoted as schools and brick-and-mortar locations shut down, forcing educators and advocates to dip into their wells of creativity and technological innovation to deliver their critical missions and outreach online. Fueled by a passion for education, these organizations were stalwart in adapt-

ing to change. “We cannot lose these connections,” says STARability Foundation Executive Director Karen Govern.

CONNECTING VIRTUALLY The seismic transition from classroom to distance learning required putting computers and internet access in the hands of all students. This is precisely what Collier County Public Schools

did, as well as area educational nonprofits, including Redlands Christian Migrant Association and The Immokalee Foundation, both serving low-income, agricultural families. The STARability Foundation serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and provides vital socialization opportunities, so quarantining was a particularly disconcerting situation for Govern and her clients. “One of

the tenets of our mission is to connect our participants to the community, keeping them active and engaged, so they’re not in isolation,” she says. “Suddenly, they were back in isolation.” Within a week of the government shutdown, online connection resumed and a full schedule of programs evolved. A bevy of new, virtual classes became sustained offerings, such as yoga with Salima Silverman of BKS Yoga Studio and improv with Craig Price of The Naples Players. Participants gained new technological skills and learned alternative methods of communication. Before the pandemic, physical space limitations created a waiting list, but many who were waiting for services could enjoy online offerings, including occupational training, Govern says.

Another local organization, Champions For Learning, made the best of distance education and boosted its online college- and career-readiness programs and workshops for 375 students. For the first time in 30 years, the Golden Apple Awards dinner at a local resort was canceled but the celebration went on: A special documentarystyle program featuring the academic innovation of 52 Teachers of Distinction and the Golden Apple winners was broadcast on NBC-2. Staying relevant, the Holocaust Museum and Cohen Education Center sent out a robust and content-rich weekly newsletter and quickly pivoted to the virtual world, bringing the lessons of the Holocaust to the forefront during a time of social strife. Holocaust Museum CEO/Presi-

dent Susan Suarez notes, “Everything going on reinforces how important it is to teach people, especially young people, to not be someone who discriminates, to not be a bully, a perpetrator, or a bystander,” says Suarez. “Just because you’re not the targeted group right now, doesn’t mean someday it cannot be you.”

ACCESSING THE OUTDOORS Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center closed alongside the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s Dalton Discovery Center, the Naples Zoo, and Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The 110,000-acre Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve maintained its research but was forced to change its public education components, says Barkoukis. Boat tours remained popular. A happy surprise, he reports, was the popularity of Audubon Florida’s “Breakfast with the Birds” virtual lecture series, which generated a worldwide audience and made clear that Rookery Bay didn’t need to lose communication with seasonal visitors and volunteers. Naples Botanical Garden brought the gardens to the public through blogs and gardening tips, which proved popular as many took up gardening for the first time during stay-at-home orders. “Priorities remained clear,” says Donna McGinnis, president/CEO of Naples Botanical Garden. “People, then plants, then bringing the garden to the people.”

FUTURE FUNDRAISING There is no doubt that fundraising has become more challenging because of canceled galas and events and philanthropic dollars being funneled to pandemic relief, though major supporters are sticking closely by organizations they are passionate about. Rookery Bay had its best fiscal year in its 32year history as of July, despite canceling its annual Bash for the Bay. “We canceled our fundraiser 48 22

hours beforehand,” Barkoukis explains. “Sponsors, donors, and ticketholders donated funds right back to us. That was a good feeling.” Naples Botanical Garden canceled its muchanticipated Hats in the Garden seasonal kickoff in November 2020, yet the 43 women who were spearheading the event collectively donated approximately what they anticipated raising, says McGinnis. Going forward, plans for donor engagement range from increasingly exclusive to more inclusive. Rookery Bay will offer exclusive “A Day in

the Life” videos that follow Rookery staff adventures and research for a day in pristine locations. Naples Botanical Garden plans private picnics and “un-galas” for those who enjoy casual, downto-earth outings and events. The 2020 STAR Gala raised a record $1.2 million, but Govern doesn’t know what to expect in the coming year. Creating a capital campaign to build a STARability community center is part of the three-year strategic plan but Govern describes the future of fundraising as “the milliondollar question.”

hen COVID-19 swept into Southwest Florida, the Naples business community jumped into action. Local businesses and organizations stepped it up and stepped in to provide food, cash, and necessary supplies to hospitals and medical staff, first responders, teachers, the unemployed, and the disenfranchised. “I don’t know that there are many other examples of such incredible community support around the country as provided by Naples,” says NCH Healthcare System Chief Development Officer Jim Mahon. “This was just a textbook example of coalescing together as a community when times get tough.” Following are a few heartwarming examples of organized compassion and outreach during a most difficult time.

Safety

Naples-headquartered Arthrex—a global leader in manufacturing orthopedic equipment and technology—produced and donated hundreds of pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as N95 masks, surgical gowns, and protective eyewear, to Southwest Florida hospitals in March and loaned medical-grade sterilization units. By late June, the company had donated more than 12,000 face shields and nearly 500 plexiglass

hoods to protect medical staff while intubating intensive-care patients. Locally and beyond, recipients of Arthrex’s generosity included health systems, surgery centers, doctors’ and dentists’ offices, assisted-living and long-term care facilities, schools, and first responders. “It’s been a total team effort to make this happen,” says Christopher Adams, Arthrex’s vice president of global medical education.

Protection equipment came from another unexpected source. With fabric from the costume shop, staff and volunteers at The Naples Players produced 1,000 masks for NCH. Theater staff also built plexiglass intubation boxes. “As soon as we stopped performing, our immediate thought was not to furlough any staff and to make an impact on the community,” says The Naples Players CEO Bryce Alexander. Throughout Collier County, restaurants corralled their staffs to prepare warm meals and distributed restaurant gift cards. Rebecca Maddox, owner of Three60 Market and Celebration Park, launched the 50,000 Meals Fund to keep dozens of workers employed and thousands of people fed with healthy, customized meals. “I’ve never seen such hungry and desperate people,” she says. When restaurants shuttered, she picked up the phone seeking donations from regular customers to create the 50,000 Meals Fund, and the response was overwhelmingly generous. “They knew us, and knew we were trustworthy,” she says. The fund provided customized meal deliveries for an array of local 28

allocated a portion of its reserves—$200,000— to buy gift cards from 31 locally owned restaurants to give to every NCH employee, and 5,100 fire, police, and EMT personnel. “Our mission was to support our local restaurants who were struggling, and to show our gratitude to the first responders for working tirelessly to keep us safe always, but especially during this difficult time,” says Port Royal Homeowner's Association Executive Director Jenna Heiderman. The association’s generosity inspired Dan Groom, owner of The Dock at Crayton Cove, to donate $7,000 in gift cards to medical workers and first responders. Patrons pitched in another $1,100. “Naples is such an amazing place to live, especially when you see how everybody rallies around each other,” he says. organizations and marginalized groups, including the homeless, farmworkers, senior shut-ins, and Alzheimer’s patients. “I wanted to provide them with the same thing we eat and serve at Three60—something hot and healthy. I wanted to provide 20 minutes of joy,” Maddox says. Her team has distributed tens of thousands of meals and will continue to do so until the 50,000 Meals Fund runs dry. Maddox gets emotional talking about the positive response from food recipients and the smiles on her employees’ faces. “It’s been quite significant and lifechanging,” Maddox says. Other entities also saw the need to give restaurants business while nourishing frontline workers. The Port Royal Homeowner's Association

Food insecurity rose precipitously alongside unemployment, emerging as a top priority. Meals of Hope President/CEO Stephen Popper says the nonprofit organization—serving up to 11 food banks each week—saw demand double from up to 1,400 families each week prior to the pandemic to nearly 3,000 families. Meals of Hope normally spends about $100,000 annually to purchase food, but it spent more than $430,000 from March to mid-June. “It’s a very difficult situation,” Popper says. Organizations like the Naples Area Board of Realtors (NABOR) were aware of the acute need. It redirected general operational funds to

purchase local farm crops that couldn’t be distributed. The fresh produce went to food banks including Meals of Hope, St. Matthew’s House, and Benison Center in Immokalee. With 500 crates of corn to distribute, NABOR President Lauren Melo hauled 50 crates to Everglades City in her own truck. “People were in line down the street and around the corner,” she says. In addition, NABOR spent more than $12,000 on free restaurant meals for frontline workers, and individual members contributed another $6,000. “Once you start doing this—the gratitude you get and the people that you can impact—it feeds your soul,” says Melo.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Gulfshore Playhouse

Darkened stages, empty seats: The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on performing arts organizations. While it’s temporarily diminishing cultural enlightenment in Collier County, the crisis has plunked the organizations at a crossroads. Forging ahead takes analytical thought, planning, and a lot of moxie. Being the creative types, local cultural institutions took performances, readings, and instruction to audiences virtually as they painstakingly plotted reopening their doors. The Bonita Springs Center for Performing Arts offered several regular online arts classes, including music instruction and an array of acting work-

shops—including cabaret—for youth, adult playwrights, and acting coaches. Many had fun with YouTube, such as Gulfshore Opera and Naples Philharmonic musicians (ever heard of a contrabassoon?), while Opera Naples’ #KeepONSinging streamed popular arias and included a fundraising component. TheatreZone created behind-the-scenes content for “Zoom into the Zone,” curated by founder and artistic director Mark Danni. The Naples Players stayed in the spotlight virtually by offering improv and comedy for teens and adults, “Fairy Tale Mornings,” and dance lessons “designed for small spaces at home.” Gulfshore Playhouse offered a variety of interactive Zoom presentations on topics ranging from Shakespeare to the role of a casting director.

The pandemic comes at a critical time for Gulfshore Playhouse, which is a third of the way through its $50 million The Next Stage capital campaign to build the 44,000-squarefoot Gulfshore Playhouse Theatre and Education Center at the corner of First Avenue

South and Goodlette-Frank Road. Since 2006, the company has staged performances at Norris Community Center. For more than a decade, founder and producing artistic director Kristen Coury has envisioned a community jewel incorporating a 350-seat main stage, 125-seat experimental studio, education wing, rehearsal spaces, a welcoming lobby with a café, garden, and rooftop terrace. The project has garnered impressive philanthropic support, beginning with Jay and Patty Baker’s initial $10 million for the property purchase. Construction costs are estimated at $33.7 million. How does she plan to move forward? “One step at a time,” Coury says. “I’m not exactly risk-adverse. Starting and running a theater takes a certain amount of patience and faith, and this is another new challenge that’s been put in my way.” Coury not only remains undaunted—she’s fully optimistic that ground will be broken by March and the center will open by late 2023. “All systems are go,” she says. “We’re devising ways to move forward. Getting back to work, that’s the most important thing. We need to get back to life and do the thing that we do. We make art; and there’s nothing like the live theater experience.”
