FROM THE EDITOR
VICKI BAKER/CHARLIE MCDONALD PHOTOGRAPHY
The event is so revered in Naples that the full name isn’t required. It’s simply known as Hats. When I joined Naples Illustrated last fall, I hadn’t even learned how to operate my office chair when I was given my millinery marching orders: You’ll need to be at Hats. And you’ll need to be wearing one. Festooned with a fascinator and sporting a red dress to reflect the Rubies and Roses theme, my first foray into the Naples social scene—Hats in the Garden—is widely considered to mark the beginning of season. Many part-time Naples residents, I’m told, who winter here starting in January, will fly in just for Hats and then head back north until after the holidays. Jane Purdy Berger planted the seed for this highly anticipated November luncheon and fashion show, which benefits the Naples Botanical Garden, in 2004. With season in full swing this month—and with spring filling the botanical garden with the same bold colors Berger prefers in her own home decor— we asked Naples native Caroline Ridgway to talk with one of the area’s most cherished grand dames. The story of Berger’s philanthropic legacy, “Garden Growth,” begins on page 74. Speaking of giving back to their community, Neapolitans will be pleased to note that Collier County recently was named the most philanthropic county in Florida, according to a study from financial technology company SmartAsset. Based on data culled from 2016 income tax returns, Collier ranked 143rd out of more than 3,100 counties nationwide and outpaced St. Johns, Palm Beach, Martin, and Indian River counties, which rounded out the top five in Florida. One of Collier’s largest fundraisers is the Naples Winter Wine Festival, which in January raised $15.8 million for the Naples Children & Education Foundation. Two philanthropists featured this month, vintner Grace Evenstad and Broadway producer Sandi Moran, have roles with the foundation and other local nonprofit and arts organizations. To find out Evenstad’s favorite view and farmers markets in Santenay, France, turn to Travel Journal on page 70. And to learn what whimsical accessory Moran wears to keep her hopping, see Sense of Place on page 176. As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” No community exemplifies these words better than Naples, where charity truly begins at home. We at Naples Illustrated salute your generosity and hope our pages inspire you to continue your philanthropic endeavors.

INSIDER Q&A: JAMES FARMER
Georgia native and lifestyle virtuoso James Farmer describes his aesthetic as “unapologetically Southern.” “Whether in design, cooking, day-to-day life, or entertaining, I hope my Southern roots are always reflected,” says Farmer, whose popular books range from A Time to Plant: SouthernStyle Garden Living in 2011 to his most recent title, A Place to Call Home: Timeless Southern Charm. “I may serve Lay’s potato chips at a dinner party, but I’d probably serve them out of a Waterford dish with a sterling scoop! I love to mix time periods and styles, which is what I believe makes life or a design unique and cherished.” The affable designer—think Martha Stewart with a drawl— will speak March 11 at Naples Tables, a luncheon of lavish place settings and such, to benefit The League Club’s Community Trust Fund. More than 600 guests are expected at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, which will showcase tables created by designers, florists, event planners, and other

local businesses. When asked what special touches he uses to make a client’s home feel special, Farmer replies with a laugh: “Their checkbook.”
Known for his sense of humor as well as his sense of style, the author says the event’s theme celebrating style, food, and fun reflects “all the things I live and breathe.”
For more of those things, plus his favorite fast-food restaurant in his hometown of Perry (about 100 miles south of Atlanta), turn the page for our Q&A. (leagueclub. org) —Loretta Grantham NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2019

How does your upbringing influence your style? I was born and raised in the same town where I still live, so childhood and adulthood aren’t that different. I’m still eating at the same Chick-fil-A, but now we have a Publix! I grew up on a farm, which made me hyperaware of the seasons and the importance of bringing the outdoors in. Because of this, I love to fill a beautifully appointed room with fresh blossoms from the magnolia tree outside or fresh pomegranates from the grocery store in order to bring natural elements into a home.
Table TITAN “When you channel a client’s personality and affinity for certain objects, it comes through in the aesthetic of the project,” Farmer says.
34
Continued NI: How did you get involved with entertaining and interior design? Farmer: I grew up in a family that entertains often, so learning to throw a party was handed down to me. My grandmother instilled in me that we eat first with our eyes, and that we feed people—body and soul—when they are at our table. I still live by those mantras today. Depending on how far back we want to go, I first started a business called Leaf it to Me when I was about 14 and was limited to a golf cart for transportation. I put flyers in my neighbors’ mailboxes and planted mums, decorated mantels, put out pumpkins. Anything they needed, they could leaf it to me! I studied art history and landscape design at Auburn University, so during college and in my 20s, I helped friends, family, and clients with weddings, flowers, and other events. As I moved toward interior design, my first clients were all relatives, so maybe they felt like they had to use me! Word of mouth proved to be the best advertisement as I began to grow my business. I think many of the aesthetics we strive to achieve with interiors can also be mimicked at an event or gathering. Entertaining and interior design share commonalities because the details are what make them personal and special.
Who was your greatest inspiration? No doubt, architect Frank McCall when it comes to design. But with cooking and entertaining, it would certainly be my grandmother, Mimi. I was standing in the kitchen as a young child, and she put me to work. Guess who got a hot biscuit before the other kids playing outside! Here I am four and a half-ish cookbooks later. What are the most important elements in interior design? Classic comfortability and my signature style of tradition with a twist melded together to form some type of harmony and balance. High and low, new and old—whatever it is that ultimately helps to make a client’s home a home. Home is an important word, and I think our clients appreciate fine homes that are chic and stylish but still comfortable and welcoming. How do you see your brand growing? We currently have projects that reach much farther than Georgia, so we look forward to continuing to expand our reach. I’ve found that roots and wings are the key to life, so it’s very exciting to work in my hometown but have clients in Connecticut, St. Louis, and beyond. My team is talented and hardworking, and we are very blessed to be where we are today. We look forward to new projects, new books, and new opportunities that come our way, whatever they may be.

Salute the Emerald Isle on St. Patrick’s Day with an IRISH PUB CRAWL through Collier County By Mark Spivak
1
Paddy Murphy’s: Two Irish exiles, Johnny McNaboe (of County Cavan) and Michael O’ Regan (of Kerry), opened this fixture of Fifth Avenue South in 1998. The decor features mahogany and bar rails imported from the old country for authenticity, and the beer list boasts Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks (from Ireland’s oldest brewery, located on the grounds of St. Francis’ Abbey). The menu is studded with comfort food such as meatballs, burgers, and fish and chips. There’s live Irish music five nights each week, and Paddy Murphy’s “celebrates every day like it’s St. Patrick’s Day.” (paddymurphys.com)
2
Shea’s at Lansdowne Street: You don’t have to be a Red Sox fan to enjoy your visit here, but it helps. Named for a street near Fenway Park, this successful branch of the original Lansdowne Street in Bonita Springs features a Green Monster scorecard, bites like lobster rolls and New England clam chowder, and a jukebox (probably tuned to “Sweet Caroline”) for those moments when the live music takes a break. Patriots and Celtics fans are welcomed, too. (sheasatlansdownest.com)
3
Johnny Malloy’s Sports Pub: Although named for a mounted policeman from Cleveland, Ohio, this Bonita Springs pub is Irish through and through. Culinary classics include corned beef and cabbage, a unique mashed potato pizza, and the Dublin Dip (similar to the French version but more patriotic). Wash it down with a large selection of domestic, imported, and craft beers, and focus on your favorite game among the bank of TVs. (johnnymalloysflorida.com)

Associations often define fashion. For Yves Saint Laurent, it was the way Paloma Picasso restyled vintage and made it her own that inspired him to mix elements from different decades in his designs. This season, Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello uncovered prints from the ’80s archives that reference artist Henri Matisse’s cutouts. Splashed across the sleek Kate monogram chain bag ($1,990), the prints illustrate how muses can be reinterpreted for a new generation.

The formerly isolated kitchen now acts as a hub of the home and is adjacent to a formal dining room that features an antique reproduction table and a banquette.
O
ne of the main goals in any interior design project is to establish an aesthetic that is at once current and enduring. That task is made all the more difficult when stuck with opinionated architecture, such as that common in the Mediterraneanstyle homes so popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. When Bethany O’Neil of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design was retained to renovate this 15-year-old, two-story courtyard home in Pelican Marsh in North Naples, her primary purpose was to de-Tuscanize it. “The house was dark and depressing and the kitchen was completely blocked off, but the home had great bones,” she says. “We wanted to work with the architecture so we did what we could to simplify it.” The seasoned designer eliminated many of the signature Tuscan features (Corinthian columns, dark-cherry kitchen cabinets, and corbels) until she had a clean palette. Certain walls were
removed in order to open up the floor plan, while existing walls were painted Dover white with a variety of contrasting finishes. Continuing with that refreshing scheme, the dark woodwork casing and doors received fresh coats of a semi-gloss white. “My clients were looking for a light and airy South of France feeling,” O’Neil explains. “The couple wanted something soothing as they come here to relax.” In the living room, linen and velvet upholstered pieces produce a chic vibe. Mixing antiques and reproductions with contemporary items (primarily the lighting) ensures the space does not look reminiscent of a certain period or feel tied to a specific era. One of O’Neil’s biggest challenges was finding a way to conceal a huge 65-inch flat-screen television. She found her solution by shipping two antique doors from France and using them to hide the large entertainment center. Now, that

area just appears as an elegant doorway to the next room. “I built a bump-out to make it look like a doorway and wainscoted the inside,” says O’Neil, who had two years to work on the home. “The doors create architectural interest on this very large wall and are a beautiful focal point with a lot of reflection.” Within the living room and across the first floor, O’Neil kept the travertine flooring, with the exception of the kitchen and master bedroom where she opted to use European white oak hardwood. Initially, the kitchen was cut off from the rest of the house. By gutting the space, O’Neil was able to open it up, allowing for natural light to spill in. A subtle pattern on the marble medallion above the stove was formed with a water jet, while the Frenchinspired hood was made from bendable

Subtle nods to the sea, such as shells and coral, appear throughout the family room, where traditional pieces invite rest and relaxation.
wood. Etched glass pendants suspended from the coffered ceiling illuminate the quartzite island lined with a trio of cool yet cozy armless chairs. Keeping in this comfortable-luxe vein, the informal dining nook exudes a carefree vibe. A collection of seating options surrounds a circular table that facilitates communal conversations. Nearby, a low countertop that was previously part of the kitchen now operates as a bar and casual eating area. Designed for guests to linger, the formal dining space has a lounge feel. A soft and deep banquette takes the place of a booth at the reproduction table lined with a reeded apron. Chairs are upholstered in an aqua-blue woven fabric that acts as a lovely counterpoint to the chandelier’s delicate lines. A niche original to the home now houses a buffet table, a simple but clever repurposing of a quintessentially Tuscan architectural feature. Modern elements juxtaposed against traditional furniture and arched doorways work together to create an especially inviting family room. “We painted over the formerly crackled media center and changed out the speaker pieces with linen that was an exact match with the wall cover,” notes O’Neil. “We made everything fit without having to start over.” Bare white candles in glass hurricanes—some etched with Greek key detailing—lend warmth, while the ethereal interplay of light blues, rustic grays, and seashells speak to a Floridameets-France sensibility. One of the most magnificent items of furniture in the house is the grayish-taupe antique cabinet, built in France in the eighteenth century. By swapping out glass for wire, the piece takes on a rustic appeal reminiscent of the French countryside. 52

ABODE O’Neil turned a low counter that was once a part of the kitchen into a fully functional bar and eating area.
Groupings of botanical prints framed in silver leaf flank the cabinet and echo the Provençal style prevalent across the home. In the master bedroom, O’Neil removed the columns from the arched niche and introduced fauxtextured wallpaper. A starburst mirror made of quartz and crystal is one of just a few wall hangings within the serene space. The bed boasts silk and linen fabrics, while the bench is topped with velvet in a demure shade of pink. The room overlooks the pool, where loungers in white Sunbrella fabrics await relaxation and sun worshipping. “Crisp whites make the landscape colors more brilliant,” O’Neil says in regards to the outdoor furniture and accessories. As a whole, this remodel strikes the perfect balance between soothing and sophisticated. O’Neil successfully ushered the property into the world of contemporary design while staying true to her personal philosophy that all homes should be timeless. “I love the feel of the old mixed with the new and try to stay away from trends so the home will look as beautiful 10 years from now as it does today.” «

Discover what’s haute in the world of OUTDOOR kitchens By Liza Grant Smith It’s an entertaining inevitability that party guests end up in the kitchen. But today’s hosts are changing the game by moving the kitchen—and party— outside. These culinary spaces have become a mainstay in high-end Southwest Florida homes, with designs that strike a balance between style and functionality. Here, Matthew Chadwick of Chadwick Outdoor Kitchens shares what it takes to create the ultimate alfresco kitchen. Naples, Bonita Springs (chadwickoutdoorkitchens.com) NI: What are the essential items to consider when designing an outdoor kitchen? Chadwick: The first thing to consider is the layout. This would be an essential part of ensuring your outdoor kitchen fits your lifestyle and functions according to your family’s needs and how you entertain guests. If you gather your guests around the kitchen and interact while you cook, a bar would be a good element to consider. You can design an “L,” “U,” or galley-style bar depending on your space, how many people are cooking at the same time, and the need for a walking path through the kitchen. What elements do you feel are necessary in order to ensure form follows function? If possible, leave open countertop space left and right of key work stations like the grill or sink. This will allow for a raw meat side and a finished dish side at the grill and a clean and dirty dish space at the sink. Waste receptacles are another key element that many forget to consider. If you have a sink in your kitchen, a soap dispenser is often overlooked but is an important thing to have for washing your hands after handling food items. A vent hood over your grill is something many people think they can do without, but if your kitchen is under roof, I highly recommend an adequate outdoor-rated hood to remove heat and smoke. 58
NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEPUHL
“The first thing to consider is the layout,” says Chadwick, who notes that an outdoor kitchen should fit your lifestyle and function according to your needs.
This will also help minimize discoloration of your wall behind your grill and keep guests from getting smoked out. What trends are you seeing in outdoor countertop surfaces? It’s important to select the right material for your countertop in an outdoor kitchen. It has to be tough to resist scratches but also aesthetically pleasing. Traditionally, granite has been used as well as any hard, durable natural stone product like quartzite. Avoid using any manmade countertops that contain resins as they will tend to yellow and turn chalky in direct sunlight over time. Some newer products have entered the market that widen selections like Dekton, which is a manmade, super tough material that resists scratching and fading and comes in many colors and textures. Stainless steel countertops are a fine solution as long as they are of 304 or 316 grade steel and have a pre-scratched surface. Concrete countertops also offer many options with the ability to dye it any color and use a wide array of aggregates, colored glass, etc. With these countertops, however, staining can be an issue. What are some current must-haves for outdoor kitchens? The grill is the centerpiece of any outdoor
kitchen, and the quality of the grills available to consumers has drastically increased over the last decade. We now offer grills with multiple fuel sources like wood, gas, charcoal, pellets, etc. Other additions that have gained popularity are pizza ovens, side burners, decorative fire elements, and higher-end refrigerators offering rollout shelves, two-zone wine reserves, and ice makers. What are your thoughts on seating for an outdoor kitchen area? Whether you have a high bar or a countertoplevel bar, I recommend stools with no arms to fit more guests. If it fits their style, I even prefer a stool with no back for easy access and the ability to tuck them under the counter better when not in use. This is a casual look and won’t fit everyone’s vision, but functionally it works. At the end of the day, what is the key to a successful outdoor kitchen? Your outdoor kitchen should ultimately reflect your lifestyle, so success is different for everyone. Some clients are very specific about how they cook and need appliances that will accommodate those needs. Others are just getting into cooking or barbecuing and want a wide variety of appliances to play with. In the end, the success of a kitchen is measured by the experience from both sides of the bar. It’s about family and friends creating memories around a fire and eating great food with great people. These are the things that hold value and, if you have that, you’ve succeeded in my book.

All Eyes On ANGUILLA
Eighteen months after Hurricane Irma ravaged Anguilla, the island’s most illustrious resorts have reemerged with new frills aplenty By Paul Rubio FOUR SEASONS RESORT AND RESIDENCES ANGUILLA Hurricane Irma’s path of destruction was far from equal across Anguilla’s 35.14 square miles, and pockets of the West End, home to the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla, sustained comparatively less damage. Consequently, this grouping of suites, residences, and villas adding up to 181 accommodations was ready for its close-up by March 2018.
Rewind to the months prior to Irma, when the property had shuttered to transition from a Viceroy-flagged resort to one of Four Seasons pedigree, a change that resulted in most turn-key inventory becoming available for private ownership. During that time, the Kelly Wearstler–designed enclave—and all its infinity-edged, silver travertine–laced excess—was polished and perfected to embody the current state of Caribbean cool. This made the post-hurricane goal simple: Turn back the hands of time to when the resort had re-debuted. Damaged elements, such as the low-rise glass balconies framing each unit, plentiful fire pits added in late 2016, and towering date palms at the Aleta pool, were replaced to appear as they did pre-Irma. Thankfully, interiors stood unscathed. (We were relieved to hear our favorite petrifiedwood tables, olive-tinted armoires, and carved-alabaster ornaments all survived.)
Storm stress notwithstanding, Irma did bestow a major gift upon the Four Seasons; she unearthed and repositioned mounds and mounds of fine-quartz sand, dramatically expanding the resort’s beaches. To be sure, the property had always occupied prime Anguillan real estate on Meads Bay and Barnes Bay. (A rocky promontory, which houses amenities like the 8,100-square-foot spa, seafood-centric Cobà restaurant, and the stunning Sunset pool and lounge, separates the two dreamscapes.) But nowadays, there’s even more room to amble, splash, sunbathe, and ogle the spellbinding turquoise waters. Combine that with superb service, a smart and sophisticated vibe, fabulous programming that includes the island’s best live music and fitness classes, and excellent, Instagram-worthy food and drink offerings—like tuna tartare served in a coconut shell and the Soya’s Thyme cocktail presented in a pineapple—and you’ll see why a Category 5 was no match for this bastion of West Indian glamour. (fourseasons.com/anguilla)
Lauded firm Rottet Studio reinvigorated the look of Belmond Cap Juluca with a design that honors the resort’s surrounds while also adding a dose of sleek island style. 62
BELMOND CAP JULUCA In the wake of Hurricane Irma, Anguilla’s grande dame, Cap Juluca, transformed tragedy into opportunity—for an epic facelift, that is. Some $40 million dollars later, the icon reemerged in December 2018 as the got-to-see-it-to-believe-it flagship Caribbean property of the esteemed Belmond brand. While the famed white-washed, Greco-Moorish exteriors and sparkling mile-long Maundays Bay beach remain, nothing else is the same. Rottet Studio’s redesign reveals an exciting departure from Cap Juluca’s long-standing classic style. The 108 oceanfront guest suites now ooze contemporary barefoot luxury, as seen in flowing natural fabrics, abundant sunlight, intricate patterned tiling, oversized bathrooms enveloped by walled botanical courtyards, and colossal terraces and balconies accessorized with conversation-inducing furnishings. A newly constructed infinity pool area segues to the main house by way of a staircase leading to a second decorative pool bejeweled in deep-green tiles and framed with a variety of seating alcoves overlooking surreal ocean blues.

As part of its reimagination, the resort has welcomed several big-deal food and beverage outlets, namely Cip’s by Cipriani, a spin-off of the Venetian culinary hot spot at Belmond Hotel Cipriani. It boasts a mix of light and rich Italian fare (the pumpkin lasagna is worth every calorie) with a hefty side of Venetian allure in seductive garden-themed environs. Also of note is The Cap Shack, a laid-back, palapa-topped beach shack at the far end of the property that specializes in spiked tropical drinks. With a fresh look and its inherent bounties, the Belmond Cap Juluca is not just enshrined in the history books of Anguilla opulence but has found its way into the next chapter alongside its headline-grabbing counterparts. MALLIOUHANA British entrepreneur Leon Roydon built Malliouhana in 1984. Fast-forward 30 years and the prized property was reborn as a boutique hotel, envisioned by the teams of SB Architects and TAL Studio and incorporated into the Auberge Resorts Collection. During Hurricane Irma, the stately, Moorishimbued resort atop Meads Bay fared surprisingly well. However, the period afterward spawned a perfect storm for an ambitious expansion and revamp across all 25 acres. The first new element, Café Celeste, opened in December 2018. This reincarnation of the hotel’s signature restaurant exemplifies the Auberge hallmarks of high-quality food and wine, so expect a French-influenced, Mediterranean menu with an incredible Napa-centric wine list to match. At press time, all else that’s new at Malliouhana shall be unveiled later this month, including a collection of 11 beachfront suites, the two-bedroom Turtle Cove Villa (with private infinity pool), a spa complex, a full beach club, and Leon’s Porch and Beach Bar, serving beach-conscious eats in a feet-in-the-sand setting. These additions will personify the pastel-hued, vintagechic Todd Avery aesthetic found within the existing buildings and common spaces. All take full advantage of Malliouhana’s sweeping ocean views across three bays and coves. It’s the type of design where every nook looks as if it was created with social media in mind. Anticipate blowing up your feeds with images of the tiered lobby accessorized with funky touches like circular mirrored tiles and a floor-to-ceiling collection of vintage deep-sea diving helmets, as well as selfies under the ruffled yellow umbrellas of the two-level infinity pool. CUISINART GOLF RESORT & SPA For decades CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa was synonymous with the lost-in-time Caribbean experience, harking back to when Anguilla first hit the jet-set scene in the 1980s. And following a November 2018 reopening, the long, lazy, carefree beach days of yesteryear can again be enjoyed at the resort—but this time with a twist. Since Hurricane Irma, CuisinArt embarked on a path of modernization that brought new life to the resort. Out are the tired interiors; in is a property that exudes coastal elegance, playing off a contrast between blues and whites, accented by sea-inspired art and sleek lounging areas. Living on THE EDGE
The Celebrity Edge embodies a new, HIGHDESIGN generation of big-ship cruising By Paul Rubio Four years and one billion dollars in the making, the just-launched Celebrity Edge consummates Celebrity’s futuristic vision for revolutionizing large-scale cruising. The game changer here? The design. This ship—the first in a new class for the brand—is an unapologetic ambush of the senses, rife with wow factor, personality-driven spaces, and curated on-board experiences that surprise and impress. It’s the world’s first ship completely imagined in 3-D, resulting in unparalleled transitions between indoor and outdoor areas. Standard guest rooms feature an Infinite Veranda, a boundaryfree division between the interior and balcony, where electronic windows reshape the space at the touch of a button. The open-air Magic Carpet lounge is a cantilevered venue that can slide along the edge of the ship and reposition
itself off a different deck daily. At 2,500 square feet each, the Iconic Suites, located above the captain’s bridge, reveal the most extraordinary of sea-and-land vistas through 82 linear feet of panoramic glass. To perfect the interiors of these state-of-theart creations, Celebrity commissioned big industry names like Kelly Hoppen, Patricia Urquiola, and Tom Wright. Together, the Edge team has conceived 1,467 glamorous staterooms, a stunning terraced pool deck (with suspended pathways and towering martini glass–shaped hot tubs, no less), a colossal spa, and more than a dozen food and beverage outlets each with its own bold character. For example, the Patricia Urquiola–designed Eden Rooftop garden restaurant is a trippy, Avatar-inspired,

tri-level lounge, bejeweled in palm fronds, hanging gardens, and Art Deco chandeliers. To complement the decor, molecular gastronomy and funky cocktails headline the menu and transformative, Burning Man–style performances take place nightly. With the new Celebrity Edge, the brand brings a floating, five-star micro-city to life, fostering destination status for the ship itself. Combined with preferred ports of call on itineraries through the Caribbean and Mediterranean, big-ship cruising never looked so chic—or exclusive. (celebritycruises.com/edge) «

Once considered a dreary rust belt casualty, Pittsburgh tells a different story today. Bustling restaurants, world-class museums, unique neighborhoods, and tech giants like Google have helped restore the city to the glory intended by industrialists whose wealth stimulated growth in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For easy access to it all, stay downtown, which boasts lodgings to suit every sensibility. Completed in 1916, the Omni William Penn Hotel (omni hotels.com/pittsburgh) looks to Pittsburgh’s historic grandeur with awe-worthy architecture. The Fairmont Pittsburgh (fairmont.com/ pittsburgh), on the other hand, embodies the city’s metropolitan elegance. The woman behind a cherished Naples charity event reflects upon her life and the passions that fuel it By Caroline Ridgway | Photography by Vanessa Rogers
M
any years ago, when philanthropist Jane Purdy Berger had a chance encounter on an airplane, she had no idea it would one day help her to establish an event that encapsulates Naples’ charitable essence. Equal parts chic and benevolent, this luncheon has largely contributed to the prosperity of a beloved Southwest Florida organization and the beautification of the community. At the time of that fateful flight, however, Berger’s sights were set on Columbus, Ohio. Relaying the story with her signature smile and spark, Berger explains that she was en route home from traveling abroad with her husband, Chuck, when she met famed designer Carleton Varney. “I didn’t know who Carleton was at first, but immediately noticed his style,” says Berger, who was in the process of relocating her family to Ohio. “He said that if I was going to ask him to change seats the least I could do was buy him a drink. We talked for hours.” Varney boldly inquired of his new acquaintance what she might do to stay busy in Columbus. Berger—with nary the first written word of an official plan but a lot of ideas, flair to spare, and superb instincts—shared her intention to bring a formal garden party with a fancy hats theme to the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The concept, respectfully borrowed from New York’s renowned Central Park Conservancy bash of similar styling, would prove a great success. When the Bergers moved to Naples in 1999, she sensed that the burgeoning Naples Botanical Garden would be the ideal setting for a comparable event. New to town and still building a network of connections locally, she fought to get traction. “Those years were a challenge and very defeating at times,” she says. “But I knew it was a winner.” She ultimately succeeded in staging the first Hats in the Garden in 2004 along with co-chairs Leslie Fogg, Barbara Finn, and Anne LaGrippe. None other than Carleton Varney, by that time a friend, would help host. Although still several years removed from the garden’s official public opening, Hats in the Garden became a signature event. Berger and her cohorts were intent on delivering a magnificent experience that would establish a benchmark. The inaugural Hats, as it came to be known, took place under a tent in the parking lot adjacent to the administrative building. The salad course was served in vibrantly adorned hat boxes, and the tables 74

were draped and styled with panache under Varney’s guidance. As an ardent supporter of the Naples Botanical Garden, Berger believes “it has a way of talking back to people. It connects with them.” She credits this power and dedicated leadership with cultivating the early characteristics of Hats and the garden itself. “We give to the garden, not to get from the garden,” she says. “The garden has been my life.” Brian Holley, the garden’s founding executive director, is quick to note Berger’s foundational part in turning the vision of the Naples Botanical Garden into a reality, stipulating that the success of Hats in the Garden enabled it to “grow, develop education and conservation programs, and serve our community.” Describing his “wonderful, thoughtful friend,” Holley identifies color and passion as Berger’s defining characteristics. With a bold mind and open heart, she was a driving force “for the garden and for initiatives she believed could make a difference.” Kathleen Kapnick, who co-chaired Hats in the Garden during the early years, praises Berger’s immense creativity and ability to translate inspiration into reality. “She never simply 76
walks down a street,” Kapnick says. “She stops at every store window, studies it, and finds an element that she stores in her memory to use at a later date.” When planning Hats, Kapnick notes that Berger’s attention to detail was always in full force. “She would send me internet links and photos and bits of fabric. She would describe, for example, a table arrangement that she had seen in a restaurant entrance 10 years previously in Milan with such detail that I didn’t even need a photo. It was not always clear to me how it all fit together, but eventually the picture emerged in all its brilliance.” Combining her singular aesthetic sense with a nuanced understanding of what the Naples Botanical Garden needed to thrive, Berger and her husband were able to make an early, lasting mark on the organization. “The garden has been the lucky beneficiary of much of her creative genius,” says Kapnick, who points to Berger’s “tenacity but also her diplomatic skills and infectious enthusiasm.” The Bergers’ imprint is felt throughout the Naples Botanical Garden, where she remains on the board of directors. “I’m certainly proud to be known for this garden,” she says,
explaining that every aspect of the 170-acre parcel of land was intentional. The visual presentation of the gardens had to be stunning, but the overall appeal and functionality— including the on-site café and gift shop (which bears the Berger name)—had to be held to an equally impeccable standard. These principles have enabled the Naples Botanical Garden to mature swiftly and resulted in high-level accolades. In 2017, the garden was the youngest ever to receive the Award for Garden Excellence from the American Public Gardens Association. The garden has also evolved from a treasured local resource into a meaningful member of the international community of public gardens, partnering and collaborating in compelling ways. These relationships have proven vital, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma when other gardens sent their staff to Naples to aid in clean up and recovery efforts. Among the more than 220,000 thousand annual visitors to the Naples Botanical Garden, it’s likely that a good many stop by the Smith Children’s Garden. Here, they’ll find a tall Royal Poinciana with painted stripes around its base. The tree, dubbed Chuck,
NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

was named in honor of Chuck Berger, who died in 2008. The tree’s colorful accent is an homage to his penchant for sporting brightly hued socks, a sartorial trademark his wife helped to originate. Berger met her husband when she was working for Neiman Marcus, and she attributes a great deal of what she has known and applied in a philanthropic capacity to her early days at the apex of fine retail during that industry’s golden age. Details and relationships matter. Berger notes that, at Neiman Marcus, there was always room for new ideas, and developing leadership was encouraged. Regardless of position or responsibility, each staff member was kept apprised of meaningful updates, and there were opportunities to be exposed to charity and high style. Throughout her life, Berger has sought to extend charitable opportunities to young organizations. The Bergers, both individually and collectively, have supported Artis—Naples, the Shelter for Abused Women & Children, the Community Foundation of Collier County, and the United Arts Council of Collier County, among others. Currently, Berger is especially enthusiastic to be aiding the growth of the Gulfshore Playhouse. Just as the next generation of charities is worthy of encouragement, so are up-andcoming donors and volunteers. Recognizing the challenges these budding philanthropists face, busy with careers and family obligations, Berger is hopeful that leadership will continue finding ways to “create real, sustaining involvement for younger supporters, over and above one-time events, based on genuine interest in the cause.” With many local groups and ideas still in their infancy, Naples presents numerous prospects for action. Berger is a proponent of the chance “to get in on the ground floor and do something really interesting,” she says, adding that “passion is what it’s all about.” For her part, Berger’s zeal for giving back has significantly impacted the local community. Her philanthropic spirit—and commitment to getting the job done—has not only brought purpose to her time here in Naples, but it has resulted in enduring projects that will ripple throughout the area for years to come. «

MASERATI LEVANTE TROFEO V-8 POWER TO THE FEW
Until Ferrari unleashes its own sport-ute in a couple of years, super-high-performance SUV lovers might want to consider Maserati’s 2019 Levante Trofeo V-8. How come? Under its sculpted, power-bulged aluminum hood sits a new 3.8-liter, twin-turbo 590-hp V-8 monster hand-assembled by the USSV RHINO GX artisans at Ferrari in Maranello. JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE TRACKHAWK DETROIT DYNAMO There’s only one number that matters, and it’s 707. That’s how many horses this Jeep’s 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 cranks out. Oh wait, there’s one more: 3.3. That’s the number of seconds it takes for the Trackhawk to lunge off the line and catapult to 60 mph. Zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds—that’s quicker than a V-12 Aston Martin AMR. Why does anyone, apart from Mario Andretti, need a 707-hp sport-utility vehicle? Because it’s probably the most fun you can have chauffeuring the kids to Krispy Kreme. Engage Launch Control, take a deep breath, and it’s the closest you’ll get to taking an ejector seat ride out of an F-16 fighter. And oh, the noise. As the trash can–sized supercharger delivers its 11.6 psi of boost, a wailing whine erupts. It’s the same sound as a twister in a trailer park. Come off the throttle and the angry snap, crackle, pop is pure tailpipe techno. What’s equally impressive is the way this 5,360-pound hulk carves curves. A cocktail of sticky Pirelli rubber, adaptive damping, and stiff springing helps the Trackhawk change directions like a spooked gecko. Yes, $87,000 is a lot to pay for a Jeep. But maybe not for a Ferrari-eater that can happily tow a 7,200-pound bass boat.
RANGE ROVER SV COUPE WHEN TWO DOORS ARE WAY COOLER THAN FOUR Just when you thought Range Rover prices couldn’t get any loftier, behold the magnificent two-door Range Rover SV Coupe. It’s all yours for a mere $295,000. Why a two-door when a Range Rover is all about versatility? Because it represents niche luxury, in much the same way the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Bentley Brooklands Coupe did a few years back. And there’s history here, too; the very first Range Rover, built in 1969, was a two-door. The SV Coupe is the latest creation from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division and is nothing less than a hand-built masterpiece. While it looks like a regular Range Rover, only the hood and lower tailgate are unchanged.
86
Open the door and it becomes clear where that $300 grand goes. The cabin is awash with the finest diamond-quilted, semi-aniline leather, as well as walnut and sycamore veneers. Of course, this being a product of SVO, buyers can pretty much pick any materials and colors they want. Powering this classy coupe is Land Rover’s potent 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 specially uprated to 557 hp. Expect it to slingshot you from rest to 60 mph in 5 seconds. Just 999 examples of this very special Range Rover will be offered, with first deliveries expected this year.

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN THE BESPOKE BEHEMOTH Here’s a Trivial Pursuit teaser for you: Name the world’s largest diamond. Those who answered Cullinan can go to the top of the class. When it was discovered at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in 1905, it was the largest rough diamond ever found, measuring 4 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. Given this illustrious history, Cullinan is a fitting name for the new jewel in the Rolls-Royce lineup. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing in at 5,864 pounds, this whopper of an SUV rolls on a modified Phantom platform and, for the first time in a Rolls, comes with four-wheel drive. As one might expect, this $325,000-andup soft-roader is filled with surprise-anddelight features, including Phantom-style rear-hinged “suicide” doors, a split-rear tailgate with a drop-down lower section perfect for polo season, and two small jump seats and a table that slide out from a compartment beneath the load deck for alfresco picnicking. The turbine-smooth, 6.75-liter V-12 yields towering performance and fluid rides across even the gravelliest of parking lots.
5 MIL-SPEC HUMMER H1 MR. SCHWARZENEGGER, YOUR NEW RIDE AWAITS Old Hummers don’t die; they get transformed into $220,000 luxury style statements, courtesy of Mil-Spec Automotive. While AM General, makers of the original military-grade H1, tried to offer a civilian version, it was just too crude, slow, thirsty, and uncomfortable to appeal to anyone except Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger. Enter Mil-Spec, short for Military Specification. It takes old H1s (the last ones were built in 2006) and strips them down to bare bones. Out goes the wheezing Detroit Diesel motor and in comes an uprated Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 turbo diesel packing 500 hp and a stump-pulling 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The H1’s original interior is then jettisoned and completely replaced with high-quality materials, new instruments, and a thumping sound system. You still only get four rather narrow seats and a center console that takes up most of the cabin, but huge amounts of sounddeadening material will keep things quiet. Mil-Spec’s first offering was its socalled Launch Edition four-door with an open back and a $218,499 price tag. It has now followed up with its No. 002 model with a closed, slantback hardtop and perforated leather interior. It can be yours for around $290,000.

7 BENTLEY BENTAYGA THE POWER OF THREE Once there was one, now there are three. Bentley’s mighty Bentayga 4x4 debuted as a flagship $229,000 V-12 back in 2016, but the lineup has now expanded to include a V-8 version and a V-6 hybrid. Choices, choices. Yet for the ultimate in sybaritic indulgence, it’s hard not to crave the flagship V-12. Here, a massive twin-turbo 12-cylinder nuclear reactor with 600 thoroughbred horses produces truly thrilling performance, coupled with silky-smooth refinement. Not that the new $165,000 V-8 version will leave you wanting. In fact, with 542 hp and less weight under the hood, it is arguably the sportier of the two, delivering a delicious exhaust note and revving eagerly to a 6,800-rpm redline. Against the stopwatch, the V-12 is still king with its zero-to-60 time of 3.9 seconds compared to the V-8 at 4.4. Details are still emerging about the Bentayga Hybrid, though we know power comes from a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 coupled to a huge battery pack. Total power is said to be around 400 hp, with 100 hp coming from the electric motor. The eco-Bentley should travel for up to 31 miles on EV power alone, with the battery capable of recharging in just 2.5 hours on a 240-volt plug. 88

ALFA ROMEO STELVIO QUADRIFOGLIO THE FERRARI OF SUVS
They call it “The Green Hell.” The infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack is is a 12.9-mile, 154-turn roller coaster through Germany’s Eifel Mountains. There’s no more challenging speed test of man or machine, so it was a monumental achievement when Alfa’s new 505-hp Stelvio Quadrifoglio rocket ship annihilated the ’Ring lap record for SUVs. What’s so remarkable about the Stelvio QV isn’t simply its breathtaking performance—we’re talking zero-to-60-mph acceleration in 3.3 seconds—but rather its sensational handling. This really is the sports car of sport utilities. The combination of laser-precise steering, perfect balance, leach-like grip, and no-roll cornering makes you forget you’re driving a high-riding SUV. Throw in massive Brembo stoppers and a fourwheel-drive system that can direct 100 percent of torque to the rear wheels, and you have the Ferrari of off-roaders. A poet could write sonnets to adulate the Stelvio’s Ferrari-derived, 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 and the torrent of power it unleashes. Add to all this spacious accommodations, versatile load-carrying, and the fact that it’s Italian, and it’s one bella macchina.

MERCEDES-BENZ G63 THINKING INSIDE THE BOX You don’t mess with success. Take Mercedes’ iconic Geländewagen, aka The Big G. That square-edged, no-nonsense design has been pleasing a loyal following for more than 40 years. So, when the time comes to give this legendary 4x4 a makeover, what do you do? Nothing—but also everything. Yes, that unmistakable shape looks unchanged; even the exposed door hinges and quirky fender-top turn signals remain. Yet the body has grown in length by a couple of inches and, most importantly, widened by 4.8 inches, dramatically improving interior space. It also has a new, stiffer chassis and independent front suspension for a smoother ride, new steering for sharper handling, and an updated, high-luxe interior. Old-school purists who adored the no-frills G-wagen may squirm, but the rest of us will say, “About time.” There’s now a choice of two twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8s. While the G550 sticks with the 416-hp version, the G63 gets a 4.0 to replace the twin-turbo 5.5. With a horsepower increase from 563 to 577, this high-powered brickon-wheels can blast to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds. While the G-wagen has lost none of its astonishing offRANGE ROVER SV redesign, COUPEthe big improvement here road capability with this WHEN TWO DOORS ARE WAY COOLER is in refinement. It’s just a lot easier to live with.
LAMBORGHINI URUS A RAGING BULL FOR THE ROUGH
10
A Lamborghini SUV? Not as crazy as it sounds. Back in the late 1980s, the artisans at Sant’Agata Bolognese built a military-grade off-roader called the LM002, fitted with a V-12 from a Countach supercar. On second thought, it was as crazy as it sounds. Fast-forward to today, and there’s a new SUV sporting that raging bull badge. The 2019 Urus (not the most flattering name) will be the $200,000 practical daily driver every Huracan and Aventador owner craves. In developing this hard-charging SUV, Lamborghini execs quite rightly decided not to reinvent the wheel. Being part of the massive Volkswagen Group, they went shopping in the parts store. The Urus’ 641-hp twinturbo 4.0-liter V-8 is a version of what Porsche used in the Cayenne and Bentley in its Bentayga V-8. The rear suspension is also from the Bentayga. That dashboard screen? From Audi’s A8. And the body is built in Slovakia, the same place turning out Audi Q7s and the Porsche Cayenne. The Urus, however, is still a true Lamborghini, with wild, head-turning styling and insane levels of performance. Think zero-to-60 in 3.5 seconds and a 190-mph top speed. And given that the Urus is some kind of wild ox (or so we’re told), its throaty, snorty soundtrack seems just right. «

GULF COAST INTERNATIONAL PROPERTIES WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG-TERM SUCCESS? I believe being honest and professional, with an emphasis on stellar customer service, is the key. Good customer service means meeting expectations, but excellent customer service means exceeding them and going above and beyond. Being immersed in our community is also key. Giving back to where we live, work, and play is essential in the paradise we call Naples. WHAT QUALITY SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD? Having an intimate knowledge of the Naples luxury real estate market and a proven track record. I grew up here, went to school here, and am raising my kids here. Naples’ fabric is in my blood, and I’m carrying on the tradition of luxury real estate from my dad’s business. WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? My dad, my wife, my children, and surrounding myself with highly motivated professionals. I’m blessed to have my wife and three children and the support of an amazing team. 1144 Third Street South | Naples, FL 239-434-2558 | gcipnaples.com

YORMAK EMPLOYMENT & DISABILITY LAW WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG-TERM SUCCESS? My love for what I do: helping workers throughout Florida. Since opening Yormak Employment & Disability Law in 2011, I’ve refused to be complacent. I’ve always been one to embrace new challenges and I won’t shy away from difficult cases. My long-term success couldn’t have happened without surrounding myself with great people who share the same ideology; all while having fun too. WHAT QUALITY SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD? The challenges from my hockey career as a goalie at Bowdoin College developed the qualities that serve me well in court. Every goalie and successful trial lawyer needs a quiet, calm confidence, but maintaining it isn’t always easy, particularly when thousands of fans cheer for my demise or an opposing lawyer tries to knock me off my game. Nearly nothing rattles me. And that quiet confidence, coupled with my passion to win, helps my clients. WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? My mom who was an accomplished trial attorney before women were accepted as trial attorneys. She passed far too early, but she was a champion of equality. She instilled in me a passion to help others-from working for an innocence project, to working for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, to devoting my practice to help employees. She inspired me and still does. And thanks to her, I knew what an affidavit was by age 5. BENJAMIN H. YORMAK, ESQ. Owner

I think my expertise in a full range of design services is very attractive to clients. I offer creative solutions to home or condo renovations along with full working drawings which gives me an advantage. Also, I am constantly updating my knowledge of sources for new materials and technology in the design world.

CAPIOLA PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG-TERM SUCCESS? Choosing a career in medicine that is focused on helping others to succeed. Helping patients and families work through drug abuse and addiction, as well as depression and anxiety problems, is what makes my work successful on a daily basis. Each person’s success automatically becomes my success.
WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? I am always inspired by the beauty in this world. Mother Nature is one of the biggest inspirations, with her masterful use of color and texture. My passion for design and color has propelled me to succeed. It’s also helpful to have grown up immersed in a family of architects and designers. I am most inspired by traveling the planet and seeing creativity in different countries, both architecturally and artistically.
WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? The automatic assumption that we are responsible for whatever choices we make. I keep that in mind when helping others to succeed. Success is really about being responsible for your own needs and goals, and the needs of anyone that you can help along the way. Do that every day; success and happiness easily comes.

THE LOCAL NAPLES WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG-TERM SUCCESS? I found something I love to do. I realized relatively early that there were some things I enjoyed doing and other things I didn’t. I enjoy my routine. I wake up every day excited to cook and create for my guests. I have a loyal staff and, most importantly, a supportive family.
WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? My upbringing has inspired me. I grew up in a small farming community in Minnesota. We were very poor, and from a young age I learned the benefits of a strong work ethic. If you work hard enough you can achieve anything. I feel proud that I grew up that way, and those words of wisdom inspire me to continue achieving.
WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? It is easy to be inspired to cook with beautiful produce from Inyoni Farms and Worden Farms, pork from Palmetto Creek Farm, and local seafood from Blue Star. I am inspired by the bounty Southwest Florida has to offer. Finally, my parents have been a big inspiration along the way. My mom taught me the fundamentals of cooking, and my dad taught me to never give up.

VANESSA ROGERS
Brooklyn-born Peter Della Rocca distilled four generations of Italian-American restaurant experience into his colorful and nutritious arugula and fried-egg salad at Parmesan Pete’s in Naples. Grilled chicken is chopped and mixed into the dish for texture and protein, along with traditional ingredients such as cannellini beans and pignoli nuts. The greens are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena. Topped with a fried egg and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, the salad makes a satisfying luncheon entrée or a shared appetizer for two at dinner. “I like to look at classic dishes and come up with my distinctive personal touches,” Della Rocca says. “When each original component tastes good, I know the final product will be delicious.” (parmesanpetes.com)

Jane’s Garden Café serves brunch every day and specializes in breakfast classics.
LOCAL FAVORITE
Jane’s Garden Café on Third When Jane Wood opened her café in 2005, Third Street South was one of the sleepiest parts of Old Naples. The area has become much busier over the years, but her approach hasn’t changed. “I wanted to open a place where everyone would feel welcome,” she says. “I sometimes go out alone, and I know that single diners—occasionally men, but especially women—aren’t always comfortable in restaurants. And because I think of Sunday brunch as a special treat, I wanted to have a place that served brunch every day of the week.” Today guests can still have breakfast or brunch any time the restaurant is open, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Eggs Benedict is the most popular item, and there are seven variations
incorporating bacon, smoked salmon, or lobster, as well as a low-carb version with portobello mushrooms and spinach. The Vegan Ranchero Veggies run a close second. Wood is quick to attribute her success to her employees. “When I interview someone, I always try to find out how friendly they are,” she says. “If they seem to enjoy talking to people, I hire them. We have a dedicated core of regulars thanks to the staff; they remember the customers’ names, what they drink, and details about their families. “For me, it’s more about the experience than the food. You’re not just eating—you’re having a good time and creating memories.” (janesgardencafe.com)
THE BUZZ ON HONEY Beekeeping might seem like a strange business for Tom May, a cellist with the Naples Philharmonic, but it’s actually part of his heritage. “My mom was a musician, and my dad and grandpa were both beekeepers,” May says. “I started at age 6 when my dad paid me a dime for each case of honey I bottled and labelled.” As an adult, May received his first hive as an anniversary gift from his wife in 1999. He now has 85, and his hobby has morphed into the Naples Honey Company. He and his family sell their honey at three local farmers markets, and the product is carried by retailers including Wynn’s, Lucky’s, and Nature’s Garden.
His story is far from unique. Other hobbyists, such as Ron Bender at Naples Bees, have seen production grow exponentially; from an initial harvest of 10 pounds, Bender now reaps 600 pounds annually. He prides himself on producing a raw, chemical-free, hive-to-bottle product, and sells his excess online. “A lot of imported honey is either contaminated by chemicals or watered down with corn syrup,” Bender says. “The real distinction is between raw and processed honey. Whenever you heat it to process it, you’re destroying all the elements that make it healthy.” There’s a strong environmental component to honey, as well: At least half of the produce we
consume is pollinated by bees, so they’re essential to the world’s food supply. Even so, Bender cautions against the dream of becoming rich from a backyard hive. “If you count the number of hours and the cost of equipment, it’s really a moneyloser. It’s more a labor of love.” (naplesbees.com; napleshoneycompany.com)

We even like it here in the summer.” The Nicholsons own two wine brands: Napa’s Nicholson Jones, founded in 2003, and a new Coombsville estate called Covert. Both are small-production properties (1,200 and 700 cases, respectively) and are under the supervision of winemaker Julien Fayard, who trained at Château Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux and is a protégé of Napa superstar Philippe Melka. While there are differences in approach between the two wineries—Nicholson Jones buys fruit from leased vineyards, while Covert owns an estate vineyard producing Cabernet and Syrah—they share Fayard’s terroir-driven style. “Julien is the glue that holds everything together,” Nicholson says. “He deals with specific vineyards that farm to his specifications and works in an Old World tradition that reflects the character of each site.”
Part-time Neapolitans Cal and Pam Nicholson run both Nicholson Jones and Covert wine brands.
That style is resonating with consumers. The Nicholson Jones wines are featured at Naples restaurants such as The Continental, Bleu Provence, Sea Salt, and Fleming’s, along with selected retailers. A barrel of the Covert Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the top lots at Auction Napa Valley 2018. Nicholson has no plans to expand at the moment. “At this level of production, wine is personal,” he says. “It should be a fun adventure for our customers since it’s way too much fun for us to make it.” (nicholsonjones. com; covertestate.com)

DEVILISH DELIGHTS
Deviled eggs date back several thousand years to when Roman chefs served boiled eggs in sauces filled with herbs and spices. In the thirteenth century, Spaniards were the first to remove, mash, and season the yolks before stuffing them back into the egg. From there the craze swept across Europe to Britain, and eventually to America. Fannie Farmer is credited with creating the modern deviled egg—bound with mayonnaise and flavored with mustard and paprika—in Boston in 1896. Local chefs are taking advantage of the dish’s potential. At Osteria Tulia, chef Vincenzo Betulia spikes his version with salmon roe, chives, and cayenne. Betulia’s Gallic restaurant, The French, serves a variation on the Ocean Prime classic oeufs mimosa with chives and domestic caviar. HobNob’s deviled deviled eggs eggs are filled with sugar-cured bacon and a tomato jam, while BrickTop’s adds simple syrup and sweet relish to the yolks before finishing the presentation with candied-brown sugar bacon. By far, the most upscale version can be found at Ocean Prime. The yolks are flavored with white truffle oil, English mustard, and freshly squeezed lemon juice, then topped with shaved black truffles and American hackleback caviar. “It’s a perfect way to begin a meal,” says supervisor Matt Johnson. “The truffle essence adds an intriguing aroma, and the tang from the mustard and lemon juice stimulates the taste buds and encourages the appetite.”

TASTE MIXOLOGY
To Your HEALTH
Recent evolutions in spirits and mixers are making it easier to imbibe without guilt By Mark Spivak
From left: Koval distillery in Chicago and dry gin; Square One basil vodka.
Is it really possible to consume a healthy cocktail, or does the concept exist somewhere between oxymoron and wishful thinking? Over the past decade, more and more organic spirits have appeared on the market. Square One Organic Vodka, founded in 2006 by Allison Evanow, is a pioneer in the category. It is made with 100-percent organic American rye and pure water from Wyoming’s
Teton Mountains, and its original recipe is also infused with basil, cucumber, and bergamot. Koval Distillery in Chicago produces a full line of organic and kosher spirits including vodka, gin, brandy, liqueurs, and grainto-bottle whiskies. Minnesota-based Prairie Organic Spirits makes gin and vodka from single vintage, non-GMO corn. There are many others but even spirits that are not certified organic are being made more carefully. The revolution that began in the 1990s with brands such as Grey Goose and Patron Tequila introduced the concept of connoisseurship—something previously reserved for wine drinkers. Even on the generic level, more spirits are composed of better ingredients and contain fewer additives and less methanol. Fans of mixed drinks now have much healthier options in the mixers themselves. FeverBritish brand Fever-Tree does not use any high-fructose corn syrup in its tonic water, ginger ale, or ginger beer. Tree launched in England in
2004 and is now distributed across the U.S. Its tonic, ginger ale, and ginger beer are free of high-fructose corn syrup, which can be found in popular labels such as Schweppes and Canada Dry. Back in Brooklyn, Q Tonic produces all the classic mixers plus Q Kola (flavored naturally with kola nuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and vanilla). These alternatives are reinforcing an obvious truth: If your cocktail is 75-percent mixer, shouldn’t the mixer be as good as the spirit? One of the easiest ways to create a healthy cocktail is to substitute an antioxidant fruit for one of the drink’s standard components; this is probably the reason so many pomegranate martinis and blueberry smashes are appearing on cocktail menus. There are variations on these antioxidant cocktails but most contain vodka combined with two or three freshly squeezed citrus juices along with a dose of Aperol, the Italian aperitivo made from bitter oranges. If you want a shortcut, there are many citrus-infused vodkas on the market, and some producers take it even further (e.g., Van Gogh’s acai-blueberry expression and the triple-threat Absolut Berri Acai,

which contains flavored acai, blueberry, and pomegranate). On the most basic level, bartending culture has changed dramatically. It’s now common to use freshly squeezed juices in cocktails, whereas 20 years ago canned or premixed was the standard. To get an idea of the difference, check the ingredients of Mr. & Mrs. T Sweet & Sour Mix, one of the most popular commercial brands. A serving of 3.5 fluid ounces contains 20 grams of highfructose corn syrup. It also has preservatives (potassium sorbate and sodium metabisulfite) as well as Calcium Disodium EDTA, an organic pollutant that appears on the FDA’s toxicity watchlist.
While it’s easy enough to beat up on commercial sweet-and-sour mixes, the fact is that many bartenders are making their own simple syrups, bitters, vermouth, and even cordials and liqueurs. These components have expanded the flavor range and creativity of today’s cocktail lists. The debate over whether or not alcohol is good for you won’t end anytime soon, but meanwhile you stand a much better chance of drinking a handcrafted libation with more healthful elements. «

True BLUE Though it may look far from natural, the sky-blue hue popping up in everything from juices to desserts owes its striking appearance to the ocean’s superfood: algae. Blue majik, derived from spirulina, is thought to be one of the most nutrient-dense foods, with its color originating from C-phycocyanin, a protein rich in amino acids and antioxidants. Due to its slightly fishy taste, blue majik is best masked by other, stronger flavors like vanilla, peppermint, and tropical fruit, and bonded with a fat source such as coconut milk or yogurt. Alternatively, it can be embraced in savory dishes. Find it locally at For Goodness Sake, Naples and try your hand at creating an Instagram-worthy smoothie bowl or chia pudding. (fgsnaples.com)

Dr. Nika Priest-Allen is board-certified in ophthalmology and practices at Quigley Eye Specialists in Fort Myers, Naples, and Punta Gorda. She specializes in cataracts and glaucoma and works with adults ages 21 and older. Here, she speaks with NI about the practice of ophthalmology and the basics of glaucoma. (quigleyeye.com)
Dr. Diane Brzezinski, DO, Board Certified in Internal Medicine, has been practicing in Naples 18 years. She won the Naples Daily News Reader’s Choice Award for Best Physician 8 years and was named GulfShore Life’s Top Doc 5 years.

NI: How frequently should people visit an ophthalmologist? Priest-Allen: The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a baseline eye examination around the age of 40. We recommend those with a family history of eye disease have an exam in their late 30s. After 50, everyone needs an eye exam annually to measure eye pressure and assess the optic nerve’s health. What is glaucoma and how common is it? Glaucoma is a disease where the pressure within the eye is too high. It is a lifelong chronic but manageable disease. Untreated, it can eventually cause blindness. Approximately three million Americans have glaucoma. Typically, it affects people 50 and older but occasionally affects younger individuals. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? There are two broad categories of glaucoma—open angle and narrow or closed angle. Open angle is the most common and usually treated with eye drops and office-based laser treatment. Typically, open angle glaucoma has no symptoms and is similar to a clogged drain that is draining very slowly. Closed angle is anatomic crowding of the normal structures (the cornea, iris, and lens) in the front of the eye and causes sudden blockage of the fluid that flows within the eye. It can be sudden, can cause pain when the eye pressure elevates, and requires immediate treatment. It is treated with office-based laser. Measuring eye pressure is only one of the tests for glaucoma because what is a normal eye pressure for one person may not be for another. Everyone over age 40 should have his or her optic nerve health checked annually. Can glaucoma be prevented? Unfortunately not, and it is totally unrelated to high blood pressure. Being super healthy does not help to avoid the disease. Twenty to 30 percent of people with glaucoma have what is considered average eye pressure. That’s why it is so important to have a complete eye exam annually. Do you recommend eye vitamins? There are a couple of eye vitamins that are good for eyes in general, such as Ocuvite and PreserVision AREDS 2. What are the latest treatments for glaucoma? We have various kinds of drops and laser procedures, and I do quite a few of the minimally invasive surgeries that weren’t available 25 years ago when we had only one or two types of very invasive surgeries. Laser treatment is much less risky and vision recovers more quickly. We do most laser in the office, but anything surgical is done in the same-day surgery center. PROMOTION

Drew Chapman
Cosmetic Surgeon & Reconstructive SPECIALIST
By Mary Thurman Yuhas
For the past four years, Dr. Drew Chapman has practiced podiatry at the East Naples office of the Family Foot and Leg Center. He specializes in podiatric foot and ankle surgery and sees children and adults. NI caught up with Chapman to discuss proper foot health and care. (naplespodiatrist.com)
Be the BEST VERSION of you.
NI: Why do most people come to see you? Chapman: People usually come in for pain, most specifically heel pain. A lot of my patients play golf, tennis, or pickleball. I also have quite a few who come in for their toenails. Finding the underlying cause of the pain early can save a lot of grief down the road. Do our feet affect the rest of our health? Absolutely! Our feet are the foundation for the rest of our body and support us from sunup to sundown. Our quality of life can be deeply diminished when our feet cause us pain. How should we care for our feet? First, buy supportive and properly fitting shoes that are the right length and width. For those with deformities or crooked toes, finding shoes that accommodate and stretch is crucial. People with diabetes should check daily for calluses and blisters or a cut since their feet often have a diminished sensation for pain. Conditions such as toenail fungus and foot odor cause embarrassment and sometimes pain. How do you treat them? The first thing I do for thick and abnormal-looking toenails is take a biopsy to identify the problem as things other than fungus can cause the condition. Proper diagnosis is the way to treat it. Foot odor is generally caused by bacteria on our skin, usually made worse by moisture. This can be from sweat or wet shoes. In addition to keeping our feet clean, we need to treat our shoes as they harbor the bacteria. I recommend washing shoes in the washing machine and air-drying. If the shoe cannot be washed, I recommend removing the insoles and spraying them inside and out with an antimicrobial spray, such as Lysol, and air-dry overnight. This can cut down on the odor tremendously. Is it wise to wear high heels on a frequent basis? My feeling is that they’re not necessarily a bad shoe, but they can irritate foot problems such as arthritis. They can also irritate bunions and hammer toes because of the small and often pointed toe box. People with weak ankles should not wear them because of the instability they cause. Open-toe shoes are a better choice because there is more room. As we grow older, what should we do to ensure we are doing all we can to care for our feet? As we age, the miles on our feet go up as does the wear and tear. Remember to moisturize them, and applying suntan lotion helps.

Artificial intelligence is already changing how we think and talk about money—and how we INVEST IT By Judy Martel Today’s new tech buzz phrase is “artificial intelligence” (A.I. for short) and it’s muscling in on much of day-to-day life, including the design and potential management of investment portfolios. Although there is plenty of controversy surrounding the precise definition of A.I., it basically involves programming computers to go beyond gathering and analyzing data to the ability to build upon past intelligence and essentially get smarter, according to Sam Ransbotham, associate professor of information systems at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. EquBot has launched an equity exchange-traded fund that relies on A.I. to vet and choose all stock holdings—a leap from machines routinely being used to replace some human activity limited to the analysis and gathering of data, explains Ransbotham. Model portfolios tailored
to groups of individuals (for example, risk-averse retirees who need income versus growth-oriented young professionals) typically have been crafted based upon huge amounts of data that machines have reviewed and analyzed. In that respect, it’s a great example of automation taking over the tasks that would be time-consuming and expensive for humans. “Then you let the advisers use the information to make recommendations, scan the investment horizon, and factor in politics and current news,” Ransbotham says. But as A.I. advances to essentially have a mind of its own and act accordingly, there are questions about how to prevent it from going rogue. Consider Knight Capital’s 2012 software glitch that precipitated the buying and selling of $440 million in stock within 45 minutes of the market opening. These types of mistakes can be swift
126 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Most dentists don’t understand the importance of a healthy oral system.
and enormous because the computer is programmed to instantly react to data and make judgments, Ransbotham notes. Growing pains are to be expected. “These technologies are still immature and there will be painful learning experiences going forward,” he adds. “I think there is a valid concern about this.” When A.I. is deployed in situations that require interpretation based on human parameters, such as in the creation of individual financial plans, it still falls short, Ransbotham believes. “As an example, computers can predict the way a certain judge will rule based on past cases and although it will be pretty accurate, it doesn’t necessarily tell us that the rulings are morally right,” he says. “There are imbedded biases. We’re not dealing with the gold standard of truth.” But by eschewing the range of emotions—including greed and pride—that can trip up humans, A.I. also can avoid the expensive human financial mistakes and fraud that have occurred in the financial industry. For example, Jérôme Kerviel, a trader with French bank Société Générale, was convicted of losing $6.7 billion in risky trades in 2008. In another case, Kweku Adoboli, a trader for Swiss bank UBS, was convicted in 2012 for losing $2.3 billion of the bank’s money and committing fraud to try to cover it up. A.I. can also deliver a level of investment management previously unavailable to average portfolio holders. “Most people could never afford to have a dedicated team of advisers looking at their situation and making recommendations,” Ransbotham says. “You can get close to that with A.I., which can learn about you and tailor investments to you.” As the use of artificial intelligence expands in the financial world, there will be a need for increased regulation and transparency, says Ransbotham. His view of the future of A.I. in investing is one of “tempered optimism,” he explains. “There’s a lot of potential with A.I. and a certain amount of inevitability because we’re already down this path.” «

And we strive to educate each and every patient on the facts. Did you know that at least 80% of American adults have gum inflammation/disease? Gum disease is linked with blood vessel disease, heart attacks and strokes. Gum disease and tooth loss also increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, if an individual has diabetes and bleeding gums, the risk of a premature death increases by 400 to 700 percent. Essentially, your mouth talks to your body and your body talks to your mouth. To assess each patient’s oral health, we have an Oral DNA test available. This provides us with concrete evidence of the high-risk bacteria living in the mouth. When these tests come back with high levels of high-risk bacteria, we have an array of methods we can use to fight these bacteria and make sure that they will never come back. Here at the office of Dr Mantikas, we strive for optimal dental fitness. What’s a healthy outside without a healthy inside? The answer is simple. It’s nothing. So, YOU work on the outside and WE WILL work on the inside.

Scenes from Disney on Ice presents Frozen clockwise from top left: Hans and Anna; Elsa; Anna and Olaf the snowman.
Is the wintry wonderland of Arendelle calling your name? You don’t have to wait until Frozen 2 arrives later this year to reunite with Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and the rest. Experience this modern animated classic like you never have before in Disney on Ice presents Frozen at the Hertz Arena in Estero, March 15-17. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen, Frozen follows Anna and the friends she makes along her journey to track down her sister, Elsa, who has accidentally brought ceaseless arctic weather to her kingdom with her ice powers. When it premiered in 2013, Frozen enchanted audiences the world over and went on to win two Academy Awards for Best Animated Picture and Best Original Song for “Let It Go.” That megahit earworm and others will help bring this story to life on the ice—with a few toe loops thrown in for good measure. THE FLUTE MAN Few sounds are as captivating as those from a flute. Its high-pitch aural dance has enamored audiences for centuries and pleased practitioners such as George Washington and Leonardo da Vinci. One of the world’s most famous flautists—of this era or any other—is Sir James Galway. Over his decades-long career, this native of Northern Ireland has sold more than 30 million records and played for such dignitaries as Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II, and a trio of U.S. presidents. On March 28, he’ll perform at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers. The program will include pieces by composers such as Gabriel Fauré, Philippe Gaubert, and Francis Poulenc, as well as Irish folk songs by David Overton and Hamilton Harty’s “In Ireland Fantasy.” Toward the end of the evening, his wife and fellow flautist, Lady Jeanne Galway, will join him for Franz Doppler’s “Andante and Rondo Op. 25.” (bbmannpah.com)

JOKIN’ JOEL Noted comedian and infamously sarcastic human Joel McHale will perform at Off the Hook Comedy Club in Naples March 8 and 9. For more than 10 years, McHale shared his pop culture commentary—from bizarre Home Shopping Network segments to trippy misadventures on kids’ shows, and all the reality television craziness in between—as the host of E!’s The Soup. In the scripted realm, he’s best remembered as the wise-cracking narcissist Jeff Winger on the NBC series Community. More recently, he penned a memoir-comedy tome entitled Thanks for the Money: How to Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be and hosted his own talk show on Netflix. McHale will serve up his signature brand of wry humor and that megawatt smile during his two-night stint at Off the Hook. (offthehookcomedy.com)

SENSE OF PLACE

Sandi Moran
, the Tony Award– winning producer behind such shows as Once, Anastasia, and Once on this Island, is a fifth-generation Floridian. Born in Miami, she moved to Naples as a young girl and went on to earn an English degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Moran and her husband, Tom, are founding patrons of Opera Naples, and they continue to have ties to many local arts organizations and children’s charities. Even with six kids of her own, three dogs, and two cats, Moran manages to find time to chair the Naples Children & Education Foundation and serve as a board member at Gulfshore Playhouse.

Best advice ever received: From my husband, early in our marriage: “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” It’s probably why we’ve been married for 32 years.

1. Favorite vista: I love the New York City skyline. It has so much energy, history, beauty, heart, and soul. 2. Dream car: My BMW 750i, dark navy with all the bells and whistles 3. Next purchase: Every year I treat myself to a new Loro Piana piece. This year it was a classic black cashmere cape with chinchilla fur trim. 4. Signature accessory: A frog brooch by David Webb. I wear it almost every day. He has attitude. 5. Next travel destination: Every year I go to Aix-enProvence, France. I am going to Argentina in the fall, an auction lot that I won at the Opera Naples gala. 6. Binge watches: Sherlock, the British version of Sherlock Holmes 7. Beloved restaurant dish: Veal parmesan at Amore Ristorante 8. Favorite splurge: Hotel rooms with a beautiful view. Recently it was Hôtel Ritz Paris overlooking Place Vendôme. 9. Style icon: Audrey Hepburn 10. Go-to junk food: Potato chips. They’re great with wine, too. 11. Next goal: Another Tony Award for one of my upcoming Broadway musicals—Hadestown, Moulin Rouge, or Tina: The Musical. Also, helping Gulfshore Playhouse build their new performing arts center.
