The next- generation Escalade / ESV. Is the arrival of the most anticipated generation of Cadillac’s crown jewel worthy merely of an introduction, or more of a coronation? We would argue the latter considering the level of design, craftsmanship and detail that transformed it into the epitome of luxury. The charge of taking an American icon and elevating it to new heights of perfection, perfection that existed solely in the hearts and imagination of the world’s finest designers and artisans was as exhilarating and monumental as the vehicle itself. Welcome to the Cadillac of Escalades.

ROLAND SCARPA

As we approach fall, and head into season, it’s exciting to see the building industry in Southwest Florida making a resurgence more quickly than most areas in the nation. In just one of several local examples, I spoke with Kathy Curatolo, the executive officer of the Collier Building Industry Association, and she enthusiastically shared that membership was up 20 percent, and permitting is on the rise for development, commercial and residential building. She went on to say growth has been so brisk that the staff at the Collier County Courthouse has been beefed up, reducing long waiting periods. She also mentioned that while her membership is moving forward with a more strategic plan, they remain cautiously optimistic about not moving too fast. By all accounts, the buzz is encouraging and it appears the recession is moving even farther away in the rear-view mirror. And there’s more. This summer, Naples made business headlines for topping Forbes’ list of Best Cities for Future Job Growth 2014. Based on Moody’s Analytics, our small town is expected to beat the 200 largest metro areas in job growth, with an annual rate of 4.1% through 2016. Now that’s impressive. All the numbers have been pointing to strong retail job growth in Florida, with Naples again leading the charge. We’re also receiving positive feedback on our special advertising sections in this Home and Garden issue. The SPACES and Design Guide are filled with trendy innovations in interior design, architecture, flooring, art, elegant plumbing fixtures, furniture, outdoor living and home renovations, just to name a few. As my team was working on these sections, the common remark from all the advertisers was, “We are not sure where all the customers came from, but we are really glad they are here!”

Haute Home

VANESSA ROGERS / Hair & Makeup: Philip Douglas

It seems we all smile a little brighter as we enter October. Neapolitans are gearing up for the social season—and we finally get a respite from the scorching summer heat. Of course, the more moderate temperatures mean you can head outdoors and truly enjoy your garden, while giving your home the once-over to figure out just how much it needs an update. Whether you decide on a complete overhaul or a simple refresh of decor and accessories, you’ll find plenty of expert advice in this Home and Garden issue. In “Haute Home Design,” beginning on page 76, we turn to several local interior design experts for the latest trends, plus advice on how to use them to find your own unique look. When it comes to entertaining at home, creating the right ambience is always top of mind. On page 92, you’ll find new ways to “Set the Mood” when you set the table. We feature tabletop accessories in six entertaining styles—from country French to seaside to sleek and modern—and everything in between. And you don’t have to be an avid gardener to appreciate “Botanical Beauties,” starting on page 84. It’s an up-close-and-personal look at several stunning blooms from the Naples Botanical Garden, which reopens later this month with a widely expanded visitor center, three new gardens and much more. The intimate portraits capture exquisite details you might ordinarily miss when strolling the gardens. One of the most unusual blooms is the popcorn senna, which boasts a vibrant yellow bloom that smells—you guessed it— like buttered popcorn!

Behind the scenes: Pictured with ann scott after a dinner at the governor’s mansion in tallahassee. For an indepth look at a day in the life of florida's first lady and how she found “A Passion to Serve,” turn to page 56.

Editor's pick: I always feel refreshed after a facial, but the HydraFacial at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples is my new favorite for delivering the best visible results. It painlessly resurfaces the skin, then plumps it with more hydration than you can imagine. skin looks radiant, and even improves more the next day. It’s the perfect pick-me-up before a big event.

Watermelon Gin Fizz In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re raising a glass with one of our favorite pink-colored cocktails and putting a sweet twist on the classic gin fizz. Serves 4 Ingredients 6 cups watermelon, cubed 6 oz. Plymouth Gin, (1 b/c oz. per serving) 8 tbsp. lime juice (2 tbsp. per serving) 1 b/d cups soda water (b/d cup per serving; can substitute ginger ale)

GreenMarkets2014

First, cube the watermelon. Line a baking sheet with wax paper, then evenly place two cups of the watermelon cubes on the sheet and freeze; these cubes will act as the perfect substitute for ice.

24

Place the remaining four cups of watermelon in a food processor or blender and puree. Strain the juice equally into four Old Fashioned glasses filled with frozen watermelon cubes. Stir in gin ( 1 b/c oz.), lime juice (2 tbsp.) and top with soda water (roughly b/d cup) per glass; garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Balancing careers as an actor and a professor at Florida Gulf Coast University, Gerritt VanderMeer will also tackle dual roles as John the Baptist and Judas in the quintessential ’60sera musical Godspell, which will be performed locally this month through a partnership between FGCU and Naples’ TheatreZone. As an engineering student in college, he took acting classes as a release from the pressures of studying. After recognizing he was spending most of his time doing theater when he should have been doing homework, he decided

to focus on his true passion and see where it took him. After playing a variety of roles on stage, and in film and television, including Men in Black 3 and The Good Wife, VanderMeer is in his third year of teaching at FGCU. He will appear in Godspell alongside his wife, Carolann, and some of his own students. We caught up with the handsome professor as he was preparing for the show. —Anna Bjorlin NI: What is the most rewarding part of your careers? VanderMeer: You get to work with interesting and talented people all the time! As a professor, it’s refreshing because every year there’s a new group of freshmen, and every year there are seniors whom you’ve known for a long time and they’re going off into the world. Acting is the same. Every job is temporary, so you’re always working with new and fascinating people. What is the best thing about working with TheatreZone? The people. They’re wonderful and generous, and extremely talented. Many who take part in it have had successful careers in New York and elsewhere, so they bring all that experience. It’s been a godsend because I came to Southwest Florida and didn’t know anyone. TheatreZone was a place where I could feel like I was part of something right away. Godspell runs October 2-5 at FGCU. Moving Pictures When photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank set about creating the portraits for her latest book, Young Hollywood (Assouline, 2014), she was conscious of continuing a kind of work she first explored more than a decade ago. In art school, where she majored in fashion, she took a photography course and loved it. For the class final, she styled 10 friends and took their portraits. “I think at 22, I felt something really magical,” says Frank, now 33, “a deep connection to photography and the process of photography.” Frank lived in Naples until she was five. Even after the family moved—first to London, and then to Napa Valley—they kept a vacation home in Naples, as “a place to rest and decompress and really just be together.” Frank’s cosmopolitan upbringing inspired her later work. After moving to New York City at age 26, where she spent two years as Anna Wintour’s assistant at Vogue, she began pursuing photography, which led to a 2010 show of her work at the Akris boutique in New York and her first book, American Beauty (Assouline, 2012). A collaboration with Michael Kors proved fruitful: The designer supplied clothes for Young Hollywood, wrote the introduction

and will be hosting a book party this month for Frank in Beverly Hills. The starlets who are the focus of her second book “see themselves as storytellers,” Frank says. “We’re both trying to tell a story together.” Frank conceived the book as a marriage of Old Hollywood and New Hollywood, doing research to catch the genuine flavor of bygone eras. She photographed Amber Heard at the Stahl House, a midcentury modernist landmark in the Hollywood Hills. She shot Isabel Lucas, her cover girl, in a 1972 Corvette in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu. At their best, her photographs capture an essence of place and character. The cover image bespeaks California car culture, the idea of movement, journeys of discovery, coming of age. Says Frank, “It was very much that retro moment with Isabel and that warm, golden California light.” —Brian Patrick Eha

October Skies

Spend a star-studded night out—but not on the town. Gaze skyward for spectacular shows this month, which include a couple of astronomical events you can enjoy even without a telescope. First, a lunar eclipse will take place October 8. Between 4:20 and 7:20 a.m., the moon will steadily get darker before turning red during the last two hours. The unobstructed

horizon of the beach will make for ideal viewing. The second event, the Orionid meteor shower, peaks on the nights of October 21 and 22. The best viewing comes between midnight and dawn, and all you need are your

Charity brews

Germany’s annual Oktoberfest takes place each September, but here in Naples, the main staple—beer—stars in a pair of local events this month. The suds will be flowing for more than just a good time; these happenings benefit local charities. On October 18, the Third Annual Brew-Ha-Ha Craft Beer Festival returns to Mercato to entertain while raising funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida. The event features live music by Rockin’ Horse SWFL, games, giveaways and a silent auction. Many brews, 50 different types, will be poured. “As if the 30 last year weren’t enough,” quips Angela Katz, development director of Ronald McDonald House Charities. Tickets are $30 in advance (rmhcswfl.org) and $35 at the gate. Later in the month, runners step off in the Fourth Annual Sunset & Suds 5K, presented by Naples North Rotary Club. After the race, registered runners meet on the beach for a party with paella, island tunes and a couple of frosty craft beers (for the over-21 crowd). Preregistration is $25 (raceit.com), and $30 day of. Proceeds will fund kits of essential items for women and kids who seek refuge at The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. —Kat Smith 36

Rosy Outlook One of our favorite products to raise awareness and funds during this Breast Cancer Awareness month: Jane Iredale Smell The Roses hydrating facial spritz ($29). The light spray cleanses, calms irritation, reduces redness and tightens skin with rose damascena flower oil while the floral scent perks up your mood. What makes it even sweeter is the company will donate 100 percent of sales profits of the spritz to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a national organization that provides people with trustworthy information and a community of support. Find the spray in Naples at UTopia Spa, Suzanne’s Images Inc., Waldorf Astoria Naples and Kara’s Skincare, or online (jane iredale.com). —K.S.

SWFL Charity TV

Chuck Ardezzone has a soft spot for charities. This month, his Naples-based film and television production company, ITZ Studios, launches a TV show that focuses on local nonprofits. Not long after the company began shooting commercials locally, Ardezzone was approached by a charity to shoot a video. Word spread, and he has since filmed more than 20 videos for other groups. “In the Naples area, there are a lot of people giving back to the community, and some charities don’t have a budget for marketing,” he says. “I know how valuable a video is and how they could use it to their advantage.” He began filming and creating 30-minute shows charities could use on websites and social media. Using the videos for television is something that Ardezzone is particularly excited about. “I want to get the word out there about all the charities that are helping people, not just the big ones. I also want people to realize, ‘Hey, my life isn’t that bad. I’m lucky to have what I have and it’s not going to kill me to take a few days out of my year or a few pennies out my pocket to help out.’ Because it’s cool to give.” SWFL Charity TV will run Saturday mornings at 10:30 on Comcast Cable TV (check local listings). —Anna Bjorlin

TEXAS REDUX An unexpected renaissance is gripping pockets of the Lone Star State, rebranding Texas as a catalyst of cool By Paul Rubio

Deep in the heart of Austin, Hotel Ella (hotelella.com) marks the latest entry in the city’s burgeoning hotel scene. Evolving from a cute college town to a metropolitan refuge for Texas eccentrics, the city embraces its slogan spirit of “Keep Austin Weird,” and Hotel Ella is no different. An adaptive reuse of a Greek Revival mansion, the 47-room hotel keeps history in style. The former abode of Goodall H. Wooten—son of University of Texas founder Thomas Dudley Wooten—and his wife, Ella, juxtaposes tradition and minimalism, resulting in a space where original family portraits peer over edgy sculptures such as Barbara Segal’s Obsessive Compulsive, a 2,000-pound marble Chanel handbag. Rife with modern works throughout, the hotel artfully blends with its trendy neighbors: the Contemporary Austin, the Blanton Museum of Art and the Mexic-Arte Museum.

Above: A serene terrace and the horse stables at the Inn at Dos Brisas. Below: Scenes from the art-centric Joule Hotel in Dallas.

Two hours east of Austin, the intimate Inn at Dos Brisas (dosbrisas.com) comprises 313 acres of prime Texas Hill Country, including a new 42-acre organic farm that’s placed the inn at the forefront of the Texas farm-to-table movement. The in-house restaurant has even coined nomenclature for its bespoke cuisine: pitchfork to plate. Garden-centric menus use the 400-plus fruits and vegetables harvested 52

on-site, complemented by locally raised beef and seafood from the Gulf of Mexico, flown in fresh daily. Beyond exalted cuisine, the Inn at Dos Brisas is a sanctuary of escapism—a sprawling ranch of Relais & Châteaux pedigree shared among nine luxuriant units, each inspired by Spanish manor design and opening to a private world of outdoor enthusiasm. With riding pursuits in the world-famous equestrian center, fishing, clay-target shooting, cycling and hunting, the Inn at Dos Brisas is an unapologetic immersion into the Texas good life. Farther north in Dallas, a citywide obsession with modern art is propelling the former oil industry megalopolis into jet-set stardom. Dallas brims with panache, as evident in the funky Bishop Arts District (home to more than 60 independent shops and galleries), the rising Design District and the world-renowned Nasher Sculpture Center and Dallas Museum of Art headlining the Art District. There’s even a hotel dedicated to the arts: the Joule Hotel

(thejouledallas.com), a Depression-era bank building turned five-star celebration of high design and riveting art by designer and architect Adam D. Tihany (who also transformed The Breakers’ Florentine Room into HMF). The Joule’s wow factor is palpable, beginning with Tony Tasset’s 30-foot Eye gazing at the hotel’s façade and continuing to the lobby’s art-in-motion cogged wheels and imagery of global subway scenes projected onto the walls. With art collections displayed across the hotel (including works by Andy Warhol and Tony Cragg), the haute design of the 164 guest rooms and eye-opening architectural elements like the cantilevered rooftop swimming pool, the Joule ambushes the senses. Art isn’t the only thing defining Dallas these days. Texans also pride themselves on hospitality, history and social status, all of which converge at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek (rosewoodhotels.com). Tucked into the city’s most prestigious neighborhood, Uptown Dallas, the 143-room hotel is built around a European-inspired mansion that has hosted the likes of Tennessee Williams and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Expect the Rosewood hallmarks of stellar service, elegantly appointed suites and high thread counts alongside experiences often reserved for A-listers, such as the live music sessions at the Mansion Bar and Chef Bruno Davaillon’s five-course menus at the Mansion Restaurant.

WINE TRAILS In 1659, Texas became home to North America’s first vineyard. Fast-forward 350 years, and the state is now sobering up and capitalizing on its diverse topography and microclimates to emerge onto the New World wine scene. Earlier this year, Wine Enthusiast ranked Texas Hill Country the world’s No. 3 Best Wine Travel Destination of 2014—a

commercialized Napa Valley. Raise a glass at Delaney Vineyards and Winery, a replica of an eighteenth-century French château that offers tastings from its vineyards, including the 10 acres enveloping the estate. If Grapevine whets your palate for Texas wines, consider a more in-depth trip through Hill Country, beginning west of Austin and continuing beyond Fredericksburg. Fortytwo vineyards dot this picturesque region, and while the experience isn’t quite as polished as California, the rewards and stories are always greater on the road less traveled. coveted list shared with Mendoza, Argentina, and Barossa Valley, Australia. Soon after, several Texas wineries—most notably McPherson Cellars in Lubbock and Becker Vineyards in Stonewall—took home multiple awards at national and international wine competitions. Given the state’s immense size and scattered vineyards (4,400 acres of grape country spread over eight American Viticulture Areas), developing a tourism infrastructure has posed challenges for Texas wine country. The solution: Foster a central location for showcasing Texas’ liquid gold. Enter the charming 36-square-mile microcity of Grapevine (grape vinetexasusa.com) near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, now the tourist hub of the Texas wine industry. Popular as day trips on the Dallas circuit, Grapevine’s seven eclectic wineries create a memorable urban wine trail. At Homestead winery, oenophiles sip a dozen award-winning varietals from the fertile Red River Valley in a century-old home. Pair delectable farm-to-table cuisine with local favorites at Winewood Grill (thewinewood.com), where the ambience and gastronomy recall a pre

051-ESCAPE-1014.indd 53

FOODIE AND COCKTAIL CULTURE Independent of Texas’ mounting wine profile, sister cities Dallas and Austin have also embraced the global foodie and artisanal cocktail revolution. Think: the craft beer movement, the small-batch vodka movement, chef-driven restaurants, ethnic eateries and experimental flavor combinations that border on genius. At Sway (swayaustin.com) in Austin, named a Top 50 Restaurant by Bon Appetit magazine, journey to remote reaches of Thailand in a seductive, contemporary setting and delight in incredible prawn miange (prawn, toasted coconut and grapefruit wrapped in betel leaf), som tam (green papaya salad) and salt-and-pepper calamari. At American brasserie CBD Provisions (cbdprovisions.com) in downtown Dallas, experience mixology at its finest with daring options like the mescal-heavy Dill Maguey or more conservative choices like Sloe Park Swizzle, a Texas take on the mojito using gin and lemon. Afterwards, feast on sublime Southern dishes such as black-eyed pea hummus, family-style whole day catch in sausage-and-okra gumbo, and pan-roasted quail.

At Pakpao (pakpaothai.com), a petite Dallas eatery run by Food Network celebrity chef Jet Tila, indulge in the weekend Thai Bloody Mary brunch with a DIY bar that features multiple handcrafted mixes and dozens of toppings and garnishes, perfect for washing down hefty plates of goong obh woon seng (steamed prawns with mung bean noodles) and authentic pad thai. Similar to the surprising art, wine and hotel scenes of Texas, the increasing foodie culture signals the opening of a brave new world of Texas urban and country cool. « NAPLESillustrated.com | OCTOBER 2014

Una Piccola Supercar

Alfa Romeo finally returns to the United States with its high-tech 4C mini-rocket. Will it be amore? By Howard Walker Who didn’t tumble head over heels in lust with the fire-truck red Alfa Romeo Spider convertible in the 1967 film The Graduate? The vision of the oh-so-pretty Spider Duetto roadster, a fresh-faced Dustin Hoffman behind the wheel and a magical Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack in the background did wonders for Alfa Romeo’s stateside image and sales. It didn’t matter the Spider was about as powerful as a Toro ride-on mower—and offered roughly the same kind of driving thrills. It was Italian, red and a convertible. Alas, since then, Alfa has tried in vain to seduce Americans with such junkers as the 75 and 164 sedans and a past-its-sell-by date Alfa Spider Graduate special edition. Come 1995, Alfa Romeo’s tenure on American soil was toast.

54

There were endless promises of a triumphant comeback. In 2008, Alfa shipped in two gorgeous Alfa-badged supercars: the 8C Competizione coupe and 8C Spider. But by 2010, it was arrivederci all over again. Now, Alfa is back—sort of. Sales have just begun for the Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe, a bottle rocket of fun and feistiness that seemingly picks up where the Lotus Elise left off. The plan is to relaunch Alfa in the United States with 500 of the uncreatively titled Alfa 4C Launch Edition. These individually numbered cars with forged wheels and fancier trim will sticker at $69,095. If those versions fly off the shelf, the 4C Coupe will go on sale at a more broadly appealing $55,195. For now, Alfas will be sold by 86 mostly Fiat and Maserati dealers, with whispered targets

of around 1,200 units in a year. Make no mistake, at $55 grand, the 4C is a veritable Kmart Blue Light Special simply because it’s the only car in its class to feature an expensive carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. This is Formula 1 technology—the way Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini and pretty much all other supercar creators build their cars. Its benefit? The carbon-fiber tub itself tips the scales at a mere 236 pounds. Even with the suspension, engine, transmission and single

cup holder, the car weighs just 2,465 pounds. As any auto racer worth his Piloti driving shoes will assure, the less a car weighs, the faster it will go; the quicker it corners, the more immediately it stops. This little Alfa 4C does all that and way more. Power comes from a mid-mounted 1.7-liter turbocharged and direct-injected fourbanger. It’s mated to a six-speed twin dry clutch automated manual transmission that sends all 237 horses to the rear wheels. And boy, is it quick—as though fired from a circus cannon. Click the stopwatch and 60 mph comes up from standstill in fewer than 4.5 seconds. Sitting what feels like like a half an inch from the ground makes it seem even quicker. Turn that flat-bottomed steering wheel— yowza. There’s no power assistance here, nothing to dilute or anesthetize the inputs. It’s just pure, racecar-like precision.

PRICE: From $69,095 ENGINE: 1.7-liter turbo 4-cylinder POWER: 237 hp TORQUE: 258 pound-feet TRANSMISSION: 6-speed manual automatic 0-60: 4.5 seconds TOP SPEED: 160 mph LENGTH/WIDTH: 157.5/73.5 inches WEIGHT: 2,465 pounds WHY WE LOVE IT: Because this fun-filled mini-rocket brings Alfa Romeo back to the States.

The 4C’s styling is pretty but not gorgeous like the boat-tailed Duetto or the 8C Competizione. It looks a little too toy-like, as though it shrunk in the wash. Also questionable is the logic behind launching the 4C in the United States as a coupe and not a convertible. In a car like this, drivers want to see and be seen, to feel the wind on their faces and to enjoy the unfettered snap, crackle and pop of the awesome exhaust note. Maybe instead of investing in that fancy carbon fiber body, Alfa should have simply spent its money on funding The Graduate Part 2: Mrs. Robinson’s Revenge. «

A Passion to Serve From being an advocate for children to restoring the beauty of the governor’s mansion, Ann Scott relishes all aspects of her state role. We travel to Tallahassee for a firsthand look at a day in the life of Florida’s first lady.

It is a moment she never would have imagined, and nearly four years later, Florida’s first lady Ann Scott still recalls it vividly. It was January 4, 2011, inauguration day—the day her husband, Rick Scott, officially became the state’s governor. Even as the evening’s pomp and circumstance wound down, she recalls having boundless energy. “After everyone had gone to bed, I was running around trying to make the house look warm, homey and inviting,” says Mrs. Scott, whose permanent residence is in Naples. “I stood there and thought, ‘I can’t believe I’m actually standing in the gover

nor’s mansion.’ I had to pinch myself.” She still approaches her role as first lady with the same bright-eyed awe and reverence as the moment she stepped into it. “I always tell everyone that I’m truly honored and humbled to be their first lady,” she says. “I love everything I get to do; most of it is with children.” Today, Mrs. Scott and her husband of 42 years are undoubtedly on the campaign trail, hoping to soon experience a moment of déjà vu, as the incumbent Republican governor is up for reelection against Democratic challenger Charlie Crist in November.

Before the campaign switched into high gear, I spent a day and a half with the first lady in Tallahassee for an in-depth, firsthand look at her life inside and out of the governor’s mansion. She shares her influences and inspiration, the children’s causes she champions, and why she initiated and led a complete overhaul of the mansion’s decor. As a vibrantly active first lady, Mrs. Scott places her passion for reading and literacy front and center, launching the Summer Literacy Adventure among other children’s initiatives. Her daily schedule would be considered a whirlwind pace for even the most NAPLESillustrated.com | OCTOBER 2014

fervent planners, yet she greets everyone she meets like a summer breeze— refreshingly warm, familiar and always welcoming. Mrs. Scott typically starts her mornings at the crack of dawn with a personal trainer, followed by breakfast and a review of the schedule. “It seems we’re always discussing the schedule because it’s constantly changing,” she says with a smile. “You have to learn to go with the flow with this job. That was one of the hardest things to get used to, because I’m a planner. You’d plan something and it would get changed. But change is good.” On a sunny spring morning, the photographer and I arrive at the mansion just after 9 a.m. to shadow Mrs. Scott for a day. We follow the black SUV, with the first lady and security team inside, and head to our first stop.

a large room and the first lady quickly engages them, asking questions about the books they like and how often they read. She then picks up two books and asks them to choose the one she will read to them; they vote by a show of hands. Majority rules. She smiles and casually remarks that is how a democracy works, too. “Push yourself to read books that challenge you,” she says to the young students. “Keep a dictionary, look up words you don’t know and then use them because that’s how you remember them.” Mrs. Scott is noticeably persistent in her encouragement. She later tells me that when she was a young girl, her family couldn’t afford books, so she relied on the library to indulge her love of reading. “In fourth grade, I read all the biographies. I loved reading about other people’s lives,” she says, noting that she was currently reading a historical book about first families and, when she was growing up, her early inspiration was Jane Austen. “I loved learning new words and pushed myself to read harder books; and it helped me in school. That’s why I always encourage the kids.” NAPLESillustrated.com | SEPTEMER 2014

Ann Scott greets Paisley Cafe Owner Kiersten Lee, and later shares the Viva La Florida cookbook.

11 a.m. Early lunch at Paisley Café After a slight time change in the schedule, we head out for an early lunch at Paisley Café, a delightfully quaint spot that is popular with the mansion staff and just a half-mile from the governor’s mansion. As we walk in, we are led to a cozy round table with a privacy curtain in the back. The first lady orders the Chicken Salad Salad (homemade chicken salad atop spring greens, toasted almonds and dried cherries). The conversation quickly turns to family. Mrs. Scott talks about her two daughters, Allison and Jordan, and three grandsons, Auguste, Quinton and Sebastian. She recounts how she would set aside an hour each night before bedtime to read to her daughters, and how they continued the tradition at an even earlier age with their own children. “Allison started reading to Auguste when he was 10 weeks old and did the same

thing with Quinton,” says Mrs. Scott, adding that Quinton loves Thomas the Train books, popular for its familiar refrain: I think I can! I think I can! “I’ve got some new books for her and all the grandkids coming this weekend,” she adds. After the plates are cleared and we make our way to the door, we’re greeted with a beaming smile from Kiersten Lee, the café’s founder and owner. The first lady embraces her and they chat at a rapid pace, as if they were longtime friends. Within minutes they discover Lee’s brother-in-law’s sister was once the hairstylist for Mrs. Scott’s mother in a small town in Alabama. “What are the chances?!” says Lee, who pulls out her cell phone and asks the first lady if she would

take a group selfie with her. “Sure!” says Mrs. Scott, with a touch of Texas twang hinting at her Southern roots. “She’s so humble, and when she talks to you, she’s so interested in you,” Lee later tells me. “She’s giving you hugs. She’s just lovely. She’s a class act.” Lee says she was also pleasantly surprised to receive the Viva La Florida cookbook a week later, signed by the first lady. The collection of favorite recipes from first ladies of Florida was a nod to the quincentenary celebration of Florida last year. It was conceptualized by Mrs. Scott and produced by the nonprofit Florida Governor’s Mansion Foundation, dedicated to preserving state history. “We had to go back in the archives to find out which recipes were probably the first ladies’ favorites and then we incorporated those,” says Mrs. Scott, noting her family recipe for Italian Cream Cake is included as well. “My kids love it, and I make it for special occasions as it takes about a half-day to make!” The cookbook project was funded by private donations and all proceeds go to support the Mansion Foundation. Meanwhile, back at Paisley Café, Lee says the first lady has since been back for lunch. Lee remembers she ordered the same thing: Chicken Salad Salad.

As part of her focus on children and literacy, the first lady visits hospitals to share her “Love.Read.Learn!” journal with new moms—and meet the newborns.

The scrapbook-style journal was created in partnership with the nonprofit Volunteer USA Foundation and contains reading tips, plus helpful information for new moms. The first lady’s passion for children extends to those without families as well. Since taking on the role as first lady, she has brought many foster children to the mansion, inviting them to dinner, and doing what she can to help. “We would sit and talk about their hopes, dreams and aspirations,” she says. “One

young man wanted to be a sports broadcaster, so we arranged for him to spend a day with a sports broadcaster.” Even before her husband became governor, Mrs. Scott volunteered with Liberty Youth Ranch in Bonita Springs, a safe haven for abused children. “I wanted to find a way to give back to the community and, after donating something to the ranch, I happened to see they needed interior designers,” she says. “I worked at the consignment shop doing the interior decorating and loved it. Rick could always tell when I had been there that day. It let your creative energies flow.” The first lady’s passion for interior design began at an early age, as she recalls constantly rearranging her bedroom and then taking on other rooms of her childhood home. “Even now, I’ll take a day and change everything around,” she says. “You get inspired by things you see when you travel, or it could be just a feeling you want a room to have.”

2:30 p.m. Tour of the governor’s mansion Arriving back at the mansion, Mrs. Scott walks us through the private and public sides, which she was inspired to redecorate

when they first moved in. The mansion has since received a complete makeover, thanks to private donations to the mansion foundation. “It was built in 1956, and nothing had been done to it in 30 years,” Mrs. Scott says. “I shared with Rick that it would be nice to preserve the history of the Florida governor’s mansion and bring it back to its beauty.” The first lady put a plan together, which was approved by the Governor’s Mansion Commission. “We wanted to give it a fresh face,” she says. “It was new paint, fabrics, draperies, new wallpaper. In the dining room, the Zuber wallpaper from France is the only one that remained.” “Carole, we’ll need to fix this rug in here again; it scooches,” Mrs. Scott says to Carole Beck, the mansion’s curator, as we walk through the rooms. “We had 300 people here last night,” she says, turning back to me. “Things get moved around all the time. And then we’ll adjust the rugs and they’ll be good for a while. I tend to tweak as I go.” In keeping with the mansion’s Greek Revival style architecture and eighteenthcentury design, Mrs. Scott hired a historical designer to help guide the redecorating pro-

cess, particularly in the entrance hall, state dining room, reception room and state bedroom, which are considered historical areas. “In the state bedroom, the fabrics were disintegrating, and we gave that room a whole new look,” she says. “We took down all of the heavy draperies that were keeping the light out and installed plantation shutters. I did it upstairs in the bedrooms first and then incorporated over here and people love it on the public side. It makes everything so much brighter.” The stunning art dotting the walls are on loan from museums all around the state: Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota; Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville; Orlando Museum of Art; Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art in Daytona Beach; and Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West. “I took Carole with me and picked art that I thought would be appropriate for the gov-

ernor’s mansion, but also art that I liked,” she says. Walking into the Florida room, which is not considered a historic room, Mrs. Scott was able to show a little more of her personality. She replaced a broken couch, while adding a table and chairs, a bench and other accessories. “I wanted the Florida room to say Florida,” she says. “I’m not matchy-matchy. You’ll see some aqua and green, and then I brought in the corals, the warm reds, the blue—colors you would associate with Florida.”

pated events began nearly two years ago as a way for the governor and first lady “to bring leaders together from all around the state,” Mrs. Scott says. “It’s networking, too, but the dinner is really just to thank them for what they’ve done for their communities and the state of Florida.” The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, and the first lady sets the tone for the evening, welcoming everyone with a warm smile—and an encouraging nudge to mingle. “I’d like each person to stand up, introduce yourself and say where you’re from so you know who you’re having dinner with,” Mrs. Scott announced to the attendees, which included a handful of Neapolitans. “You can share as much or as little as you want.” The first lady speaks with such confidence and ease that one would never know she actually grew up with a paralyzing fear of public speaking. It stemmed from an incident in sixth grade, when she was ridiculed while giving a report in front of her class. It is an experience she has recounted many times publicly, and one she now sees as a positive. While she says she still gets nervous before having to speak in front of people, Mrs. Scott partly credits her husband for pushing her to step outside of her comfort zone. “Rick always encourages me to do things I might not do otherwise, and it makes me

a stronger person and gives me more selfconfidence,” she says. “She’s a gracious and elegant ambassador for Florida,” says acclaimed Florida artist Christopher Still, who was also seated at the first lady’s table at the dinner. His La Florida triptych paintings are on display at the entrance to the mansion. “A lot of people want her attention, and I was struck with her ability to address almost anything going on around her in a very thoughtful way,” Still adds. “You would not know that she had so many other things on her plate.” Despite her dizzying schedule with few, if any, breaks to catch her breath, at the end of

Why Naples: We took a trip to Naples when our daughter was on spring break one year and fell in love with the town and its Midwest influence. The people are so warm and friendly. They want to figure out ways to give back to the community and make it a wonderful city. There’s no place like home: We have a daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren in Naples, so we try to get back as often as possible. Our other daughter [and her family] live in Texas, and we’re working on them to move to Florida, too! In our home, everything is how we left it. Naples is home for us. Favorite places to take the grandkids: We love to go to Food & Thought. We typically take our first grandson Auguste there. Our daughter Allison and son-inlaw Pierre will join, along with their son Quinton. We like to visit the Naples Zoo, C’mon (Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples), Naples Botanical Garden and the Conservancy (of Southwest Florida). Where she dines: Sea Salt, Campiello, Café Lurcat, Bleu Provence, and clubs including Naples Yacht Club and Port Royal Club, especially in season; we don’t have a lot of notice sometimes.

the evening Mrs. Scott still appears as fresh as an orange blossom in early spring. As guests begin to trickle out of the mansion, the first lady is still chatting with several people at the door and enthusiastically smiling for candid snapshots. Her role as first lady is one she wears well, like a rare gown you try on for size and serendipitously becomes the perfect fit. “I was coming from private life to public life, so I had no idea what this was like. You move to a new city, new house, new job— and there’s no job description,” she says. “The job is what you make of it, and I love my job. I always feel like I’m evolving.” « NAPLESillustrated.com | OCTOBER 2014

While varying shades of blue are always popular on the Paradise Coast, interior designers say blue is also on trend beyond our shores. Blue is considered a particularly beautiful accent to neutral grays.

Style-loving Neapolitans are as keen to keep their homes up-to-the-minute as they are to dress their fashionable best. We tapped six savvy local interior designers to break down seven of the latest trends—from white walls to bright colors and mismatched proportions—and suggest ways to best incorporate these elements while keeping an eye towards Southwest Florida sensibilities.

TRUE BLUE All shades of blue have long been popular in interior design for Southwest Florida, where many homes are surrounded by aquamarine waters and bright blue skies. But interior designers say blue is also on trend beyond our shores. “Blue is very harmonizing in Florida. We are doing work around the country, and we are seeing the same thing beyond Florida,” says Glenn Midnet, president and CEO of Interiors by Design West at Mercato in Naples. A wide spectrum of blues can evoke varying emotions. “We want our homes to reflect the peacefulness that softer blues bring us, and on the other side, you can dial up more intense blues for the playfulness they bring,” says Susan Bay, owner and president of Bay Design Store in Old Naples. Try this: Mixing blue and white achieves a subtle nautical influence. “Crisp blues and whites are ever popular and fitting for the Naples lifestyle,” says Minka McDonald, vice president of interior design, Jinx McDonald Interior Designs in North Naples. From stunning chandeliers to luxurious islands, the hard boundaries in the kitchen have all but disappeared as it is seen more than ever as a venue for entertaining.

ENTERTAINING KITCHENS

HEDRICHBLESSING Photographers

The kitchen has transformed into functional entertaining areas while also becoming increasingly glamorous, with elements ranging from stunning chandeliers to lavish islands and breakfast nooks. “The movement to kitchen-as-gathering place for family and friends has, to a considerable extent, been prompted by the popularity of flowing great room architectural plans that have eliminated the traditional hard boundaries between the kitchen and the home’s living and entertaining areas,” says Debbie DeMaria, owner and designer of Vogue Interiors in Bonita Springs. “Rather than being isolated behind closed doors, the kitchen is more frequently an integral part of the grand open space and serves as a venue for celebrating the art of cooking while entertaining.” TV cooking shows and a trend towards healthier eating have also had their effect on kitchen design. Enter luxury equipment such as coffee faucets and steam ovens. Try this: Add to your kitchen’s versatility and functionality with this suggestion from Renee Gaddis, principal designer at Renee Gaddis Interiors in North Naples: “Luxuries that are affordable and a must are the induction cooktops that boil water in less than two minutes and have a sleek, simplistic look for any style kitchen.”

All shades of white are on trend, and experts recommend adding pops of color to balance the neutral tone.

You’ve heard of 50 shades of gray. This year, 50 shades of white are pushing into gray matter and beige territory. “From white-white to crème to a very slight cast of petal, the whites have really become the new beige,” Bay says. “They are often replacing gray as well for basic upholstery. Walls, too, are most often seen in pure shades of white.” Gaddis agrees: “All shades of white walls are trending right now. Don’t be afraid to match the trim to the walls and/or cabinetry. In regard to the paint sheen, just say no to semigloss. Satin is the new trim finish, which is not as glossy. It gives the trim a more casual Florida feel.” Both designers recommend pops of color to balance neutral whites. Bay likes to use bold contrasting trim hues like turquoise, hot mango, kiwi, fuchsia, corals and sunny yellows. Try this: Gaddis suggests more ways to infuse color into whiteness: “Paint your interior doors black, red or a greige,” she says. “Also, try painting your old furniture with bright, fun lacquer and mix it with old stained case goods [wooden furniture].”

Your furniture and accessories need not all perfectly match. And the sizes of the various pieces in your rooms don’t have to be proportionally similar. What’s with all of this rule bending? Designers say mixing it up actually makes your home more inviting. “Two unmatched sofas in a room, a floor lamp paired with a table lamp—symmetry gives a room comfort, but a little unexpected accessory or over-scaled mirror gives it interest,” says Gaddis.

Furniture styling and pairing have indeed evolved beyond the traditional, opening up countless new possibilities in interior design. “An eclectic blend of prints can make a space feel contemporary when high-contrast colors are used,” says Midnet. Try this: Midnet suggests mixing contemporary clean lines with earthy natural accents such as stone cocktail tables, petrified wood finishes and raffia trims. Tonal washed finishes give a soft feel that mixes well with rich, dark colors like stone gray and ash. Experts say it’s time to step outside traditional design rules. Mixing furniture styles or adding unexpected accessories in a room can make your home more inviting.

One way to extend the indoors out is to use tile planks on lanais and other outdoors spaces that resemble the interior flooring for a cohesive, continuous look.

INSIDE OUT Florida decor has traditionally focused on bringing the outdoors in via windows, lanais and potted plants. That trend has been reversing, designers say, to further blur structural limitations and send the indoors out. “Many are finding the comfort of outdoor living with comfortable fabrics and furniture that are outdoor-worthy,” says Shari Summers, president and owner of Summerfields Interior Design in the Naples Design District. It’s now the norm to see outdoor living spaces replete with full kitchens, island bars, fireplaces and other features as extensions of the home. This is largely a result of an improvement in fabrics and other

076-design trends-1014.indd 81

materials that can withstand Florida’s salty, humid seaside climate. “Outdoor furniture has come a long way in the past years—from the styling to the structure,” says Gaddis, noting that outdoor furnishings now come in a multitude of textures, materials and colors help make outdoor spaces more appealing and comfortable. Try this: Flooring is a great way to blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. “We are seeing wood floors used in the interior of many homes, and a way to keep a cohesive, continuous look is to use tile planks on lanais and outdoor spaces that look like the wood from the interior,” Gaddis says. PRECIOUS METAL

Metallics are influencing everything from wall finishes to accessories, adding a shimmery elegance to any room.

“Metallics are also showing up in softer, subtler ways, such as mixtures of silver and gold that produce champagne tones,” says DeMaria, noting that she sees metallics influencing fabrics, wall finishes, accessories and plumbing fixtures. Midnet sees a lot of metallic elements at the manufacturer level and likes to incorporate them in his design work. He says even mixing different metallic finishes works. In furniture, metallic accents on tables are on trend as well, adds Summers, noting examples of rustic wood finishes paired with black, shiny silver or gold metal frames. Try this: “Consider soft, woven metallic fabrics to add a little shimmer to a casual room, and bold metallic wallpaper to add drama as lights reflect off of ceiling detail insets and accent walls,” says Midnet.

Bright splashes of color, whether seen in furniture, area rugs or other accessories, create a bold visual effect.

BRIGHT & BOLD An explosion of color can be seen across the home, from furniture to fabrics, accessories, wall coverings and area rugs, according to trend trackers. “Color is back in a big way,” McDonald says. “Painted furniture is in. Whether the pieces are painted with a matte or lacquer finish, furniture looks bright and fresh when painted in blues, greens, reds and white.” The designers we polled point first to furniture to illustrate the trend. Bay offers examples: a bright turquoise Chippendale china cabinet or mismatched French cane chairs painted entirely in “a shocking fuchsia.” “It has become a bit overwhelming, actually, with the use of color like spinning the color wheel. Whatever really bright colors come up, use them all!” says Bay, noting that the Fabric Fair in High Point, North Carolina, revealed a range of overthe-top bold colors that created a strong visual impact. Try this: Gaddis of Renee Gaddis Interiors suggests using colorful pillows, art and other accessories to introduce the trend into the home, since they can be easily swapped out as styles and trends change.

It has been refreshed with new paint and signage along with an enhanced audio-visual system. Celebrate the grand reopening in elegant style with decadent Lobster Manicotti. Chef Jorge Nolasco’s creation features sherry and butter-poached Maine lobster alongside pasta shells filled with ricotta, mozzarella and baby spinach, all topped with shaved Parmesan. Ghanian native Andy Hyde developed his unique cooking approach after earning a culinary arts degree in Germany, where he grew up, and years of globe hopping. He’s worked under the direction of some of the world’s most iconic chefs, from Gordon Ramsay, to Thomas Keller, to Sven Elverfeld, to Grant Achatz. After a stint at Achatz’s Chicago restaurant Alinea, Hyde thought he would return to Europe to find his next mentor with an eye towards a restaurant of his own. His friend Liam Blake, a Brit he had worked with at Alinea who had moved to Naples for a gig as sous chef at Old Collier Golf Club, convinced Hyde that Naples was the place for him. After cooking at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Club for a year, Hyde jumped on the opportunity to be top chef at La Bazenne on Fifth, where he has the freedom to apply what he’s learned during his decade of experience. In this interview, Hyde talks about his many influences, as well as how he tweaks French cuisine for Florida palates and manages to incorporate some intriguing local ingredients. —Kat Smith

Chef Andy Hyde REALITY TV: What you see on television about Gordon Ramsay is realistic. That’s just how we’d get trained, with that attitude. I am a firm believer in walking the line between genius and madness, and he did that. The trick is how to control it. FRENCH + FLORIDA: It’s important to remember French techniques and ingredients, then try to find similar ingredients here and marry that together. I cut heaviness of French classical food with the lightness of Florida ingredients. I did my homework— there are so many ingredients here that nobody’s looking at. I’ve foraged for ingredients, such as pennywort, or dollar weed. But on lawns it was full of pesticides. Now Happy Foods of Southwest Florida grows it for me. If you research pennywort, it is the best thing that I have found for your heart and for blood flow. FALL FORAGE: For this season, one favorite dish is bourbon woodchip-glazed quail with micro root vegetables and parsnip puree. Then we do a pine needle-glazed venison. Pine needles grow here everywhere. I try to get them from tallest branches. Whenever you see a brother climbing a tree wearing a chef jacket, that’s me! HIS INFLUENCES: I always find a way to relate flavors of different cuisines and incorporate them. One example from my memories of Ghana is the octopus. Ghanian cuisine is very spicy so you can’t distinguish any flavors balanced in the dish. I use espelette spice, ground from peppers grown in the Basque region. It’s not superspicy but has a paprika-mild spiciness. I marinate the way we marinate in Ghana, with lemon, chili flakes and parsley for 24 hours. We plate it on slate. In Africa, I didn’t see too much fancy porcelain. We serve it with cherry tomatoes and charred broccoli rabe. And we add a lemon verbena pesto, with no cheese, just a little olive oil and basil. MUST-HAVE INGREDIENT: Vinegar. I always have a white balsamic, Banyuls and verjus, because I believe salt and vinegar are the most important ingredients in the kitchen. You can just give me salt and vinegar with any ingredient and I’ll make you a beautiful dish.

Burger Meister

When Todd Brooks moved to Naples four years ago to renovate the once-popular restaurant Lindburgers, he had his work cut out for him. After changing owners twice, the eatery was in disrepair and failing to attract the crowds it used to. Drawn by its history, Brooks bought the restaurant, rebuilt it, rechristened it Brooks Gourmet Burgers & Dogs, and began greeting new and familiar faces. “We hang our hat on hospitality,” Brooks says. “We have great burgers, but also a very personal restaurant. Everyone who walks in our door, we try to shake their hand and know who they are.” Brooks’ hard work appears to be paying off. His restaurant was featured in a recent list of the 10 best burger restaurants in America, as voted by TripAdvisor members. “I think we got that ranking because of our loyal customers,” Brooks says. “That’s how we set ourselves apart from our competition.” The food surely helped the restaurant’s reputation, too, with a lineup of tasty specialties, such as the signature Todd’s Way burger topped with a fried egg and crisp bacon. Or, if you’re really daring, there’s the donut burger—a traditional burger topped with cheese and bacon sandwiched between two glazed donuts. (naplesburgers.com) —Anna Bjorlin

Not one to stick with the status quo, Executive Chef Michael Mueller returns to Café & Bar Lurcat, bringing a dynamic new format to the popular restaurant. “I redesigned the menu with new categories—Seasonal Market, Traditional and Voyage,” Mueller says. Seasonal Market dishes will change quarterly to focus on the best seasonal ingredients from local farms and fisheries, while just one or two of the Traditional offerings will be switched out at a time so fans of Lurcat’s classics can still enjoy the dishes they love. The most intriguing element is the Voyage section, which will change entirely each month or so and offer dishes to coincide with a theme suggested by current events or a particular area of the world, for example. The first of these “voyages,” launching late this month, centers on the cuisine of France, with dishes like Octopus Terrine, Grilled Foie Gras Torchon, and Roasted Côte de Veau. Diners also have the option of a four-course tasting menu, with or without wines. Mueller plans special dinners with food and wine pairings accompanied by commentary by visiting winemakers, too. He’s revving up the restaurant’s social media presence to interact with customers and gain their input to update the menu. “The intention is to excite without alienating,” he says. —Kat Smith

PARADISE Dainty. Delicious. Divine. These are the words that describe the fresh, handmade miniature donuts from local donut shop Peace, Love & Little Donuts. Father and daughter duo Bob Marino and Kara Barefoot launched the grand opening of their new 1970s inspired donut shop on Tamiami Trail just a half-mile north of the old location in Naples. The store serves up a wide array of flavors, from old-school classics plain, glazed, cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar, to new-school renditions that combine classic elements with other desserts—such as boston crème; s’mores; piña colada; apple pie; strawberry, blueberry and cherry cheesecake; banana split, chocolate pretzel with sea salt; chocolate chip cookie dough; and maple bacon. What’s even better is that each donut is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. “We are a true family-owned and operated small business. Peace, Love & Little Donuts is so grateful and thankful for all of our Naples customers who come to the shop to see us and spread the peace and love,” says Barefoot. Celebrating the stone crab season, which officially starts October 15, The Old Naples Waterfront Association (ONWA) kicks off the claw-cracking October 24 to 26 at Tin City. Along with the seafood delights, drinks, live music and dozens of vendors, there is plenty on tap to entertain the kids, such as face painting and bounce activities. Prefer to be on the water? Discounts on sightseeing cruises, paddleboard and kayak rentals will be offered to festival attendees. (stonecrab festival.org) —Isaac Espinosa

Sense of Place The Mediterranean-like climate of California’s Central Coast makes Paso Robles ideal for creating Rhône-style wines By Mark SPivak

El Paso de Robles, the full name of the place we all know as Paso Robles, translates as “The Pass of the Oaks.” This wine-producing giant has an interesting history, beginning with the nearly extinct Salinan Indians, who knew it as The Hot Springs long before the Spanish missionaries arrived. The tribe flourished in California’s Central Coast in the area now known as San Luis Obispo County. By the time Paso Robles passed from Mexican to American control in the nineteenth century, it was world famous for the restorative powers of its mineral hot springs. The industry catering to the crowds seeking the benefits of the springs gradually gave way to wine making, with the first commercial winery established in 1882. Later on, the area drew the spotlight when Ignace Jan Paderewski, the famous Polish musician and statesman, planted vines on his ranch there in the early 1920s. He was one of the first to realize that the hot days and cool nights of the region’s Mediterranean climate were perfectly suited to Rhône varieties such as Syrah, as well as California’s heritage grape, Zinfandel. Despite that, as American wine drinkers of the postWorld War II era developed a taste for Cabernet Sauvignon, most Paso vintners concentrated on that grape— particularly large wineries such as Meridian and J. Lohr, which sprang up in the 1980s. Although Gary Eberle, one of the area’s pioneers, planted Syrah as far back as the mid 1970s, in 1989 a

Plan a trip to Paso during one of its annual festivals, such as Vintage Paso.

VISITING PASO Paso Robles hosts many festive events. Major annual happenings include Vintage Paso (March), the Paso Robles Wine Festival (May) and the Harvest Wine Weekend (coming up October 17-19). The best accommodations can be found at The Oaks Hotel, the Hotel Cheval, the Adelaide Inn and La Bellaserra Hotel. Three facilities still offer the hot springs experience that made Paso famous—the Paso Robles Inn, River Oaks Hot Springs Spa and Franklin Hot Springs. If your goal is to visit wineries, plan ahead. Remember that many facilities are too small to offer public tours, and can’t receive you without an appointment. When you’re ready to take a break from wineries, check out the Children’s Museum or the Pioneer Museum, the art galleries at Studios on the Park, the Hunter Ranch Golf Course or the Ravine Waterpark. Other must-sees include the Hearst Castle in San Simeon and the historic Mission San Miguel Arcangel, established in 1797, which are main tourist attractions in the area. For more information on these and other attractions in Paso, visit pasowine.com and paso robles.com.

remarkable thing occurred: Château de Beaucastel, one of France’s top producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, established a winery outside Paso Robles in partnership with American wine importer Robert Haas. They planted their 80 acres with Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, and the Rhône craze was launched. Today there are more than 150 wineries in Paso, most of which primarily produce full-bodied red wine. The conventional wisdom is that the best vineyards are located west of Highway 101, where they benefit from the cool breezes coming off the Pacific Ocean. Many of the wineries (such as Saxum Vineyards and Linne Calodo) are tiny operations that produce sought-after bottles usually purchased through a mailing list. One of the best known is Turley Wine Cellars, the king of Zinfandel, which makes 28 different wines from 35 vineyard sites. For seekers of more accessible producers, the best introduction to Paso is Hope Family Wines, which produces five different labels, including Liberty School and Treana. Liberty School, which began as the second label of Caymus Vineyards and eventually became a brand in its own right, is a remarkable value. The varietals that Liberty produces includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and a red blend called Cuvée. These wines are satisfying and wellcrafted—at an attractive average price of $15 a bottle. «

Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Living on the Gulf Coast, the majority of my inspiration is found in nature. Using a coastal color palette that pulls the tones of the water, sand and surrounding greenery makes for a naturally harmonious living space. From rustic wood to oyster shells to rough crystals, I draw ideas and inspiration from even the most subtle nature-based accents.

Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Residential custom homes. Working side by side with clients to create a space reflective of their vision and their lifestyle is priceless. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing the beginning stages, like the interior detailing, to the ending phases, like the bedding and linens, come together. Unifying the multifaceted areas of design in a unique, cutting-edge way that directly correlates with the client’s vision is profoundly rewarding.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Less is more. Getting rid of the clutter accentuates the elegant lines and beautiful silhouettes in a home’s architectural details while allowing the furniture to stand out and be appreciated. I’ve also noticed a new trend towards a more classic design that incorporates clean, strong lines with a transitional to contemporary flare.

Godfrey Design Consultants Inc Q: What is your design inspiration? A: My inspiration comes from new product design, such as new fabrics and finishes that really catch my eye. I love designing a space around an amazing texture and color. I am inspired by great architecture and art.

Q: What is your area of specialization? A: I specialize in designing luxury homes, condominiums, commercial properties and yachts. My team is large enough to offer full service yet small enough for personal attention. Creativity, attention to detail and implementation is what I love. I’m passionate about design, and it shows.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Some key trends that I am spotting are clean lines, unique details, textures and contrast with a combination of well-defined quality furnishings. I’ve seen a departure from modern, sleek interiors to a more eclectic, traditional look, keeping the newest in home-building products. My clients want to come home to a warm, inviting, living environment.

Design West In Mercato Q: What is your design inspiration? A: For me, design is inspired by three factors. One is the fashion industry; textiles, color and fashion trends lead to interior design trends, which is why we are proud to bring Ralph Lauren Home to our design center in Mercato. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel. The more you are exposed to different customs and countries, the deeper your creative well. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Design has been moving towards the integration of natural, organic elements. Contemporary, clean lines mixed with earthy, natural accents are trending. Tonal “washed” finishes give a soft feel that mixes well with rich, darker colors. Backgrounds are becoming lighter and more neutral, using layers of texture. Bigger outdoor

kitchens, patios and outdoor luxury items will continue to be the rage. The integration of technology with a refined design aesthetic is also in demand. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: We specialize in high-end residential interior design, floor planning, furniture, custom cabinetry, accessories and installation. From the concept stage through the entire building process, we provide turnkey design and project management. Our designers have varying styles and ideas, and collaborating as a team helps us achieve award-winning results in tune with each client’s desires. Integrating brands like Ralph Lauren Home and Bang & Olufsen, we create a unique blend of casual luxury and timeless elegance as can be seen in the 2015 Golf Magazine National Dream Home, for which Design West has been selected as the design team.

Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Our creative force is ignited by glamour and style. We love to watch people’s reaction when they are first introduced to exceptionally wide planks and long lengths, which offer a surface with more panache and fewer seams. As a fifth-generation artisan-owned manufacturing company, Legno Bastone creates custom flooring that fits each client’s vision and lifestyle. We create the perfect floor using our expertise in finish, texture, space planning, balance and aesthetics. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Europe is famous for its fine traditions of craftsmanship; it is the source of countless masterpieces over the centuries. Today, this tradition remains Legno Bastone’s most valuable asset, essential for the

production of a luxury floor. Our wide planks have organic, natural tones and a European feel accented with a coastal, casual touch individualized by the client. Each plank is oiled and has its own fingerprint in the form of the beautiful grain. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring provides unremitting attention to scale and proportion accompanied with a balanced yet rich aesthetic. Our creations seamlessly layer contemporary and traditional elements. Every plank is handcrafted by European artisans and designed to evoke a sense of romance, comfort and luxury. Alison Craig Home Furnishings, Naples Q: What is your design inspiration? A: A successful interior is not determined by the cost of its components. We are all about achieving a highend look at a great price. Mixing high- and low-budget elements into a room is a good practice because it keeps the total cost of the room lower and presents an interesting mix of pieces, rather than looking like an imitation of a brand’s catalog. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Tribal prints, as seen on the fashion runway, are making their way into the home. With origins from Indonesia to North and South America, tribal motifs deliver an exotic

look without being overpowering. These single-color prints deliver a reference to hand-blocked patterns that transition between style categories. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: The design team at Alison Craig can help you create rooms that reflect your individual style, whether it be island tropical, classic Old World, modern chic or comfy and casual. With some of the best-known brands in the industry—such as Theodore & Alexander, Stanley and Henredon Leather—at our fingertips, our design team will assist you in choosing not only the right furnishings but also the perfect accessories, art, Karastan® rugs, lighting and more.

Q: What is your area of specialization? A: I get the most satisfaction from creating a beautiful residential interior. I love the process of getting to know my clients and bringing to life what they envision. The personal interaction motivates me to do my best to make them love their home.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: I would say there is a strong trend toward more color and texture in fabrics. Richly embroidered linens with more transitional patterns are quite popular. Case pieces and upholstery that have lovely, elegant details are taking the place of overly modern designs.

Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Vogue’s award-winning designers view interior spaces as broad canvases offering endless possibilities for creativity. Our inspiration starts with our clients. We create designs that reflect their unique personal styles and aspirations. With that in mind, a piece of art, a swath of fabric, an architectural detail, textural elements or a unique color can inspire a complete design. We believe a well-designed room should please the eye, stimulate the mind, be welcoming and excite. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Homeowners are trending to open living spaces featuring transitional designs with contemporary twists, light wood tones and architectural details such as geometric ceiling designs. Neutral backgrounds that work with different furnishings and collected items are preferred, along with pops of color from fabrics, artwork and accessories. Various colors are being brought to life by mineral tones, especially metallic and sleek textures. Also prevalent are the vibrant tones of sea colors, golds, grays, taupes and aubergine. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Whether it’s a commercial project or a private residence, Vogue’s licensed interior designers work with remodel and newbuild clients and contractors from concept through completion to create and execute compelling designs. For more than three decades, Vogue has created luxurious, comfortable spaces in which to live, work and play—places where people feel warm, welcomed and at ease. We believe a glimpse into a home or business should be aesthetically pleasing, effortlessly functional and extraordinarily experiential.

Outdoor Screens at the Touch of a Button!

Automated roll-up screens for residential and commercial applications are the newest technology for large openings. At the touch of a button they provide the ideal environment for insect, sun and/or privacy control.

When the screens are lowered there is minimal reduction in ambient light, outward visibility and air flow while keeping out windblown debris, insects, and other pesky critters. When not in use they vanish to leave a completely unobstructed view of nature.

151-Balance Opener-1014.indd 151

Flotation tanks have been around for decades. Isolation tanks, sensory deprivation tanks and Restricted Environmental Stimuli Therapy (REST) were popular in the ’70s, and the technology has resurged lately in cities like Boulder, Colorado, and L.A. The theory is, when your mind and body are cut off from any distractions they can recalibrate. We found flotation therapy locally at Naples Massage & Neuromuscular, which cites several ailments that floating can ease—such as back and chronic pain, depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia and other health issues. Dr. Tabatha Petersen, who runs the clinic, says floating allows you to deeply relax, which eases stress and promotes healing. The flotation tank contains a solution of water and Epsom salts, which allow the body to float weightlessly. The water and air are heated to match body temperature, while light and, usually, sound are eliminated. “Flotation helps your body maintain homeostasis,” Petersen says. “Homeostasis is your body’s ability to maintain that perfect chemical balance. Unfortunately, none of us really maintain that with all of the stresses that we have. One hour in the tank is equivalent to four to six hours of REM sleep.” (naplesmas sage.net) —Isaac Espinosa

Easy Healthy Eats

With the busy social season upon us, we are more pressed for time, which often means healthy eating habits can get lost in the shuffle. What’s a health-minded person to do? Let one of these local chefs dedicated to good-for-you food (and deliciously convenient delivery) cook for you. BY Anna Bjorlin

De Luca’s Healthy Meal Plan Delivery After growing up in the kitchen peeling carrots and potatoes with his father, Chris De Luca followed in his footsteps and became a chef. Today he focuses his delivery service on providing healthy meals for people too busy to cook. “A lot of my friends have kids and spouses and full-time jobs,” De Luca says. “They didn’t have time to spend with their families. So I started working for a few friends, preparing meals and charging them, and more people started to catch on. It just evolved into this whole business.” ●  High-protein meals with 100-percent organic produce ●  Weekly create-your-own meal plans, pay as you go 239-776-0101, eatcleanhealthy.com Fresh Fit Foods After his brother opened a CrossFit gym, Chad O’Connor was inspired to start his own complementary business, preparing healthy gluten- and dairy-free paleo meals for those who were focused on fitness. He has expanded his base to include consumers who just

want to eat healthy. “All of my meals come delivered in Styrofoam containers with ice packs, so the meals stay cool for hours. To come home and have food sitting there, ready for you to heat up and eat, is a great feeling,” O’Connor says. ●  Six-week cycle of menus consisting of lean protein and fresh vegetables ●  Lunches, dinners and family-style meals offered 239-595-2503, freshfitnaples.com InnerG Health Fuel A certified holistic health counselor, Lori Quinn was inspired after working with clients and finding a common theme: everyone wanted to eat healthier but didn’t have the time or knowledge to prepare the meals. So Quinn started making meals for friends, and her business soon grew into a full delivery and pickup service. “When you have healthy food readily available, it helps to avoid making unhealthy choices,” Quinn says. ●  Gluten-free meals ●  Ideal for raw, vegan and vegetarian lifestyles 239-572-1979, innerghealth.com Raw Juice Girl Delivered Nicole Mariani was introduced to the benefits of juicing after her father began following a healthy diet that she believes helped heal him from a life-threatening disease in 1991. After battling cancer herself, she began to focus on creating cold-pressed organic vegetable juices as part of her lifestyle. “It was an interesting journey, figuring out what made me feel better; that’s what makes me so passionate about it,” Mariani says. ●  100-percent organic, cold-pressed raw vegetable juices and juice cleanses ●  Seasonal recipes made with local produce 239-231-8744, rawjuicegirldelivered.com

In the Stretch

Move over, Yogalates and Zumba. There’s a new workout in town, which uses the Da Vinci BodyBoard, named for its method of sculpting the body to fit the symmetrical figure of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. The foldable, portable board is rigged with several fitness bands and can be used in numerous exercises for cardio and resistance-training benefits. Take classes at the R3 Body Method Studio (r3soulsurfer.com) in Naples, or buy a board online (davincibodyboard .com) to work out at home. Online memberships provide access to weekly videos that focus on everything from rehabing injuries to cardio to resistance training. Each fast, high-intensity class consists of one-minute intervals followed by 30-second breaks. The board’s inventor, Floery Mahoney, stumbled upon the idea after tying fitness tubes to furniture legs in her home to exercise. “I’ve been a runner my whole life and I was attending boot camps, but I was just getting bigger,” she says. “I was trying to tone up more, so I started messing around with fitness bands. I figured out the size of the board I needed, made a prototype, and we’ve been rolling ever since.” —A.B.

NI: What is the MD factor? Cederquist: The “MD” stands for metabolism dysfunction, a medical condition that makes gaining weight easy and losing weight very difficult. Last year, 89 percent of the patients with weight issues I saw in my practice had evidence of it. How do you think we got to this point? The nutritional guidelines for Americans that came out in the late 1970s stressed a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. This diet can work for the young and extremely active, but causes weight gain as you age. Add highly processed foods to a carb-focused diet and your body is in worse shape than before you ate. Meals should be a healthy balance of lean protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats derived from real, whole foods. What inspired you to write the book? Since 1998, I have worked with people who wanted to lose weight, but found it difficult. This book came out of the profound transformation in health and well-being when their metabolic problems were identified and treated with the correct meal plan. The MD Factor Diet lets me share my knowledge and treatments with everyone. What’s one change someone could make today to improve their nutrition and health? An important key to reversing the MD factor is eating more protein. We don’t store protein in our bodies. If we don’t take in enough from our diet, our bodies break down muscle tissue to meet our needs. Most people eat a large protein serving at dinner, and not much the rest of the day. Breakfast is a challenge; most breakfast items are low in protein and high-carbohydrate. I recommend eggs, or a combination of eggs and egg whites, chicken or turkey sausage, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, and protein shakes. —Lauren Daniels

Giving BACK

Leading with Heart

F

For more than 50 years, Reid Carpenter has dedicated himself to the service of others. He spent his early 20s focused on volunteer outreach to gang members in Hell’s Kitchen in New York. But a turning point came in 1961, when he moved to Pittsburgh and met Sam Shoemaker, the Episcopal priest who inspired Alcoholics Anonymous. Carpenter says the priest helped him create “a vision that was far more expansive and far more inclusive” than any he’d had before, one that culminated in establishing the Leadership Foundations in 1978. The nonprofit now has 74 chapters nationwide, including one in Immokalee, of which Carpenter is the president. He moved to Naples with his wife in 2004 and saw need in an impoverished area of Collier County. “We try to ask what is this community weeping about? What is breaking its heart?” says Carpenter, now 75. “For the people of Immokalee, the answer was always kids, kids, kids.” Everyone involved in charity work competes for limited resources, so rather than champion a single cause, Carpenter’s organization seeks to connect and support others who are already doing good work in many areas, such as school dropout prevention and treatment for substance abuse. The foundation’s local chapter partners with community groups on several initiatives to help at-risk kids, including leadership training, career planning and financial literacy education. One of the most exciting is a young entrepreneurship program in which Immokalee High School students complete a university course on consumer food-product development and create their own products to bring to market. The kids also learn how to give back. Since October 2013, dozens of high school student volunteers have packed more than 100,000 meals for Meals of Hope, a nonprofit that supplies healthy meals to families in need. “We think that love is the most powerful force in the world,” Carpenter says. “We just provide the adult undergirding for these kids to flourish.” «
