Also in this issue, beginning on page 94, are several fabulous tables from The League Club’s Naples Tables event, held earlier this year. This much-loved tablescaping spectacular featured the work of more than 55 designers and is a true feast for the senses. Though incredibly difficult, Naples Illustrated selected a handful of tables to showcase in this issue. Here’s hop ing you enjoy these as much as we do and perhaps find some inspiring ideas for the details of your next tablescape.
In this Home & Garden issue of Naples Illustrated, we hope you find a healthy dose of inspiration for your humble (or not-so-humble) abode, starting with our cover shot, which showcases the efflorescent garden of Naples resident Selma Net tles. Every corner of Nettles’ garden appeals. At its core, the space is comfortable and inviting, though several bronze and marble masterpieces within infuse a stately feel, including sculptures by renowned Már ton Váró, whose work graces the front of Ave Maria Catholic Church and the intersection of Collier Boulevard and Tamiami Trail East. In addition to her garden, Nettles—who has assembled a diverse, mesmeric collection of paintings, photography, sculptures, and other pieces—was gracious enough to open the inside of her art-filled home to us, too. Learn more about this art aficionado, her home, and her knack for perfecting the eclectic starting on page 86.
Designer and television personality Nate Berkus perhaps said it best, “Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love.” I hope as you flip the pages of this issue, you’ll discover a few ways to enhance your home. There’s no place like it.
To home and happiness,

To be truthful, I’ve lost track. But, I think I’ve lived in 14 different homes. From a historic home constructed in 1873 in Midland, Michigan, to a Southern-style resi dence in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the coastal contemporary I now inhabit here, each has been distinct and afforded unique and ample opportunities to conceptualize, design, and decorate. No matter where I lay my head, projects seem to find me. And I know I’m not alone. People relish their homes and love to make them hospitable, es pecially here in Naples. As we usher in fall and the home stretch of 2022, it’s a perfect time to turn our attentions toward our residences.
If you’re looking for ways to bring the bold into your home, flip to page 102 for a feature on statement pieces. You’ll find novel ideas for doors, bathtubs, countertops, and more. And if you have a love for lumber, you’ll likely appreciate our piece on the latest wood trends, which commences on page 116. Read about what’s au courant in the world of woods while also gleaning some practical tips for keeping hardwood floors looking their best.

Over the years, the design duo has worked on projects from Paris to Puerto Rico and Canada to the Cayman Islands. They have only missed “three, or maybe four states” in their years of designing homes, says Collins. They have also expe rienced the joy of traveling through Europe searching for both inspiration and unique pieces to fill their archives. It might take years, but they always seem to “find a per fect fit” for those treasures, adds Collins.

Collins and DuPont cut their design teeth while working at the same firm. It didn’t take them long to discover they worked well together. Both have Midwestern roots: Collins is originally from North Dakota, and DuPont is originally from Indiana. They have lived and worked in Southwest Florida since 1978. Together they founded the Col lins DuPont Design Group in 1987.
The pair’s timeless design philosophy, however, remains the same. “We stay away from the trends,” says DuPont. “The trends follow us,” adds Collins. “We like to say we are the creative juice.”

says that although the pandemic fueled the biggest adjustment with supply chain issues forcing them to change the way they did things, they also now notice a demo graphic shift, with a younger, more mobile, and more hands-on clientele emerging. Collins explains that “clients are seeking pieces that have meaning, provenance, are authentic, or handmade.” And with many clients already in possession of established and curated art collections, Collins says “our work now is less about finding the art than about assisting in placing it.”

The Conservancy, which leads nationally rec ognized Burmese python research and removal efforts, made record-breaking news this past year with the capture of the largest python to date in Florida—a female, weighing in at 215 pounds and measuring nearly 18 feet in length. Her belly was full of eggs—122 to be exact.
“They are not supposed to be here,” Bartoszek says. To report an invasive species sighting, call 1-888-IVE-GOT1, or use the IveGot1 mobile app. (conservancy.org) –G.S.
In 2013, the Conservancy established a python research program to better understand the be havior and ecological impact of the snake and to reduce the long-term effects this invasive species would bring to Southwest Florida’s unique natural environment and the native wildlife population.
Although the Burmese python is a “beautiful and amazing creature,” he quickly emphasizes “they wreak havoc in the local environment by depleting the surrounding native wildlife.” Barto szek points out that hatchling pythons were first spotted on a roadside in Collier County in 2009 by a scientist who was specifically looking for them.
NATURE SERPENT STALKERS
Scientists hypothesize that the Burmese python (Python bivittatus) slithered into Florida sometime in the 1970s, most likely as a result of the thenburgeoning exotic pet trade. The unwelcome legless and carnivorous creature, known for rapid reproduction, quickly became a major menace to the bio region. Ian Bartoszek, wildlife biolo gist and environmental science project manager for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, declares the invasive species “the wildlife impact issue of our time.”
Since 2013, the Conservancy has removed more than 1,000 pythons weighing in excess of 26,000 pounds from approximately 100 square miles in southwestern Florida. From November 2021 to March 2022, Bartoszek reports an additional two tons of pythons were captured and humanely re moved by his team of biologists at the Conservancy.

Eventually inspired to start her own practice, Orion fondly recalls, “An drea Clark Brown was unique in her brilliance, and she used it with purpose and elegance to sculpt space in a way that communicated her understanding of what it means to be human.”

Honoring a Legend
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Florida Southwest has renamed its local scholarship program the Andrea Clark Brown AIA Florida Southwest Scholarship Program in honor of the late renowned local architect who designed such notable Naples landmarks as Sugden Com munity Theatre, the “Butterfly House,” and St. Agnes Catholic Church, to name just a few.
From top: Rendering of new Naples Senior Center; Jay and Patty Baker with pups.
Initially founded by the Naples Jewish community and Jewish Family & Commu nity Services, the Naples Senior Center opened its doors in January 2014 as the first senior center in Collier County. The center, for individuals 60 and older, pro vides services addressing the emotional and social needs of seniors in Collier and southern Lee counties. Since opening, membership has grown from 80 to more than 1,400 members. An average of 40 different social, educational, and wellness programs are offered each week, thanks to more than 200 trained and vetted volunteers. (naplesseniorcenter.org) —G.S.
The local scholarship program was estab lished in 2018 to encourage students to pursue careers as registered architects. The commit ment on the part of the architectural students is significant in terms of time, effort, and cost. With this in mind, AIA Florida Southwest cre ated a program to help establish a continuous stream of local talent accepting the challenge. The organization hopes that after completing their formal education, the local students will return to Southwest Florida to enjoy a reward ing career in architecture.

We have so many exciting projects in the works. My large exhibition of all my work over the last 15 years is on display at SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, which has been exciting. We just opened a new store called The Collective West in Connecti cut, and our interior business is really growing with two hotel projects in the works and a restau rant. We are just really proud that we get to work and create magical things every day.
I wanted this collection to feel modern and stylish, just like one of my dresses. [The pieces] have an element of statement and sculpture, which was so impor tant to me. I wanted them to feel special and not just be functional chairs that take up space. They also have vintage references from the ’60s and ’70s, which are my favorite eras in furniture design.
Christian Siriano offers customers “a full Siriano lifestyle” with state ment-making fashion and furniture collections.

When Robyn Lang-Shankland, interior designer at Bonita Springs-based Freestyle Interiors, was tasked with updating a five-bedroom, Gulf-front home in Old Naples, her client requested an elevated Mediterranean look. “The home was filled with beautiful Mediterra nean architectural details, and although the brief was to make the home more current, lighter, and brighter, it would have been criminal to remove all of its opu lence,” she explains.
During the 5,330-square-foot dwelling’s re juvenation, most of the stonework was preserved, as were the columns and hand-carved stone accents, the swooping stone staircase, and the iron balustrade. Many of the home’s dark wood details were also spared. A major change, as directed by the client, was replacing the original marble floors and decorative inlays with Italian walnut hardwood. “Wood is warmer and softer,” notes Lang-Shankland.
The first phase of the remodel took six months and was finished just before Thanksgiving, when family members from Maine came to gather for an annual holiday celebration. “Removing and replacing stiff, uncomfortable furniture from the house and adding comfortable sofas and chairs was incredibly important,” notes Lang-Shankland, adding that with the new furnishings in place, the family often found themselves spending time in the formerly seldom-used great room.

The formal dining room bears no resem blance to the dark space it once was. Designed to accommodate large family gatherings, no details were overlooked. “The homeowner is extremely spiritual and loves crystals, so we used natural stones and crystals throughout the home,” says Lang-Shankland. In the evening, the dining space glows like a starry summer night with Swarovski crystals embedded into the hand-painted ceiling while a custom chan delier of polished nickel and cascading crystals casts subtle light over the room.

The soil in Southwest Florida is fairly poor and not suited for growing many annuals and cut flowers. I recommend planting in raised beds, beds off of direct soil, or you can even create mounds of good soil on top of existing soil. My raised beds are only 6 inches above the soil line, but the higher you go, the better your yield.
1
Full sun is required for most cut flowers. Watch your yard for a year, as the angle of the sun changes from season to season. The area of your yard that gets the full sun all day throughout the year is the area you want to place your cut flower beds.
Good soil is key for plants to thrive. To grow the strongest and best-looking plants, you need to add more nutrients to the soil with compost. I usually do a mixture of half topsoil and half compost.
I would highly recommend killing off the existing turf or weeds where you want to put your bed. A great way to do this is scalp the existing plant material (cut it very low) and then place cardboard over top of it. Make sure you remove all tape and plastic from the cardboard as the plastic will never break down. Then you can add your soil directly on top of the cardboard, which will break down over time.

Plants take time. Be patient and make sure they are getting the correct amount of water. I also like to use natural fertilizers like fish fertilizer on all my cut flowers and vegetables. It is diluted with water, so I apply with a watering can.
The more you harvest your flowers, the more blooms you are going to get. Just like any plant, the more you pay attention and address issues sooner, the healthier your flowers will be.
Mulching helps a lot if you want to keep other weeds out. It is also a great way to add more nutrients to the soil. My favorite is FloriMulch because it is made using invasive melaleuca and does not have any dyes in it. Water is key! Especially in the dry season/winter, once the rains stop, it is essential to water your cut flower garden. I water almost every day during the dry season. Drip is best, but a sprinkler works perfectly fine, too. Even hand-watering, which is a great way to assess your plants and check for insects or pests, works.

For a well-lit property that can appear radi ant even after sunset, consider path lighting, low-lighting, and up-lighting. Areas to il luminate include focal points that can be seen in the distance, plantings and flower beds, specimen plants, fountains, pools, ponds, pathways, sculptures, gazebos, and more. Lighting can also be added outside prominent windows to draw the viewer’s eye past the glass, adding a visual extension to a space.

f you sign up for an agave tasting at Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Mexico’s Los Ca bos region, be prepared to walk out with more than a buzz. In addition to sips of some very fine mezcal and raicilla, you’ll get a taste of the mythology of the places where the agave spir its are distilled. Take sotol, for example. Out in the desert, the story goes, sotoleros catch a rattle snake and dunk it in the firewater, fangs and all, until it drowns. That microdose of venom is sup posed to be good for the health, to add vigor. We’re told it’s a local legend. Maybe.

Zadún sits at the crossroads of desert and sea, between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortéz, so its story revolves around the rugged environ ment of Baja California Sur. Baja is famous for winter whale-watching, and Zadún’s perch atop a hilly landscape is the ideal place to observe the rituals of these gentle giants. From December to April, humpback and gray whales travel to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortéz—“the aquar ium of the world,” accord ing to Jacques Cousteau—to mate, calve, and nurture their young. Sometimes they’re so close to the coast, you can lit erally see them breaching from the terrace of your villa. For a more intimate encounter, your personal tosoani (a brilliant combination of concierge and butler) can arrange a private 2-hour boat excursion with the
flavors of a region while providing next-level luxury. Each of the Reserves has a unique nar rative that’s tied to the locale and its people.
While nothing outranks whale-watching on the bucket-list scale, the Ambassadors offer a wide spectrum of programs to keep guests of all ages engaged. On a rainy afternoon, sign up for the chocolate-making experience. It starts benignly enough with a history lesson, where you’ll learn that cacao beans were once more valuable than gold and that Montezuma drank 50 cups of chocolate a day, then progresses to a hands-on part that will make you appreciate that bar of Godiva in a whole new way. After roasting, peeling, and grinding the cacao beans, you’ll simmer them in hot milk with the spices of your choice. No instant gratification here, but good things—in this case, the drink of the Aztec gods—are worth the wait.

Whether dining at Humo or one of the more casual restaurants, music continues into the night, resonating across the hillside. I’ve come to the Mercedes-Benz research center in rural Immendingen (south of Stuttgart) to take a closer look at this visionary Vision EQXX. Right now, the EQXX is a concept car, with no plans for production. But the lessons learned from this advanced piece of engineering and technol ogy will be incorporated into pretty much all upcoming Mercedes EVs.
Climb aboard and the surprisingly production-ready cabin feels part George Jetson, part Mercedes E-Class circa 2030. It’s packed with some really cool features, like a massive, pillar-to-pillar, 47-inch touchscreen. The interior uses lots of sustainable, non-animal materials too, includ ing upholstery made from cactus, mushroom roots, and vegan silk. The funky blue shag mats on the floor are a mix of bamboo and recycled plastic water bottles. Need a snack? Chew on a seat.
THE GROUNDBREAKING MERCEDES-BENZ ELECTRIC SEDAN THAT CAN GO 747 MILES ON A SINGLE CHARGE
Mercedes achieved a drag coefficient of 0.17, making the Vision EQXX the most aerodynamic road car ever.
But there’s hope on the horizon. The remarkable Mercedes-Benz Vi sion EQXX can go for an astonishing 747 miles on a single charge. To put that into perspective, 747 miles is roughly the distance from New York to Chicago, Miami to Charlotte, and L.A. to San Fran and back. In a recent record-shattering run, the EQXX whizzed across Europe, from Mercedes headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, to Silverstone, England.
I’m a range anxietist. Each time I get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle with a longish drive ahead, a tsunami of fear washes over me. Am I going to run out of juice before I can find a socket? Along with beaches, gators, and Key lime pie, the one thing Florida has in abundance is sunshine. So, when a boatbuilder comes up with a luxury cruiser that’s 100 percent powered by the sun, it’s worth taking notice.
But space—and plenty of it—is a huge part of the appeal here. At al most 30 feet wide, it’s half as wide as it is long. The outside entertaining areas are truly vast, whether it’s the full-width rear cockpit, the spacious flybridge, or the sunken deck on the bow. Inside, you could hold a party for 20 in the salon and it would still feel empty. Add to that the large galley and dining area, plus the choice of three or four cavernous cabins, includ ing a master that takes up one entire hull.
However, for those who live by the mantra that life is too short to own an ugly boat, this might not be the craft for you. With its boxy superstruc ture, black-framed vertical glass, slabby hull sides, and Kansas-flat roof, it’s all function and not a lot of form.

Today, I’m in Fort Lauderdale, slathering on the SPF 50 and trying out the Silent Group’s newest power cat, the $3-million-and-up Silent 60.
There is something totally soothing about gliding along with only the sound of water bubbling up in the wake, feeling the sun on your face, and knowing that it’s not costing you a dime in fuel. Miller tells me that one Silent 60 owner made the decision to buy after tiring of using his 80foot Italian motor yacht for family weekend trips from Lauderdale to the Bahamas and spending more than $12,000 on fuel. He’s not alone. Right now, more than 30 Silents are awaiting construction at the builder’s yards in Fano, Italy, and Istanbul, Turkey. In addition to the 60, there’s an 80 and even a superyacht-size 120-foot version.

To get technical for a second, this 60 comes with Silent’s E-Power propulsion pack, with its twin 268-hp electric motors and 207-kWh lithium-ion batteries. It’s good for 7-knot cruise speeds with a claimed— though optimistic—15-knot top speed.

“I’m not a minimalist,” says Nettles, with a chuck le. She explains that she purchased the home in 2004 as a second residence—she also owned a home in New Hampshire at the time. Built in 1958 and consid ered vintage for Southwest Florida, Nettles admits she bought a “quirky old house.”
Nettles also admits to loving the “colors and sculpt ed, yet wild look, of English gardens.” She credits Hungarian sculptor Márton Váró and local landscape designer Lawrence Perillo, a principal at Blue Land scape Contracting Group in Naples, with helping cre ate the hybrid Italian/English garden she walks me throughNettlestoday.hadmet

Quirkiness aside, Nettles had a plan for her pur chase. “Art is my passion, along with gardens,” she says. Creating the garden on this property took prece dence. Between 2000 and 2010, Nettles visited Italy a dozen times. “I love Hadrian’s Garden Villa in Rome,” she says of a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the ruins and archaeological remains of an immense villa complex. Nettles made copious notes during her visit, hoping to create a smaller yet similar looking space of her own one day. “I wanted traces of history everywhere—both personal and cultural,” she says.
Gardens are a work in progress and constantly undergo reinvention. Natural disasters, especial ly, necessitate change. Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, Perillo was tasked with the redesign of nearly 90 percent of the garden that was original ly completed in 2008. Perillo, a Naples resident since 1995, is a certified arborist with a bachelor’s degree in plant science. “He kept the colors and designs of an English garden and created a sense of hidden rooms,” explains Nettles. “He really lis tened to what I wanted.” Today, Nettles describes it as a “symmetrical garden, a little ruffled around the edges, but a peaceful place, grounded by theOversculptures.”time,Nettles purchased more of Váró’s sculptures: five live outside in the garden and six

smaller ones reside inside. Her favorite, however, is the first one she bought the night she met Váró, called simply Female Torso. Today, Nettles’ garden plays host to a diverse collec tion of sculptures. There is a bronze sculpture of two dancers by Vietnamese artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen. A smaller bronze and stainless steel ribbon sculpture, cre ated by Paige Bradley, an American sculptor, is a copy of the original she gave to her husband, Victor, as an engagement gift. Nettles also has a cement face hidden in her garden’s banana grove. “It’s not significant art,” she claims, but “just for fun.”

Nettles considers herself a very organized person and thought she could easily take on the role of general contractor for the remod eling project. New to town, she admits that she “did not know anyone, nor how things worked,” nor, she quickly found, “were con tractors interested in rebuilding a small house.” Eventually she passed the remodeling baton to a contractor and along with ample ag gravation, the house was completed in 2008.
Along the way, many of her friends ques tioned why she was even building a garden and why she wouldn’t just raze the little old house. Nettles herself acknowledges what she was doing was ridiculous. “If I had been practical, I would not have this house. I was underwater on it; I did not know Naples and thought I could do it all.” Ultimately though, she says, “I met great people, and I now have an excellent team to take care of the house andNettlesgarden.”concedes she became what she calls a cliché; although she was only going to live in Naples part-time, she started visiting more
Like a docent at an art gallery, Nettles guides me on a tour of the first floor of her home. As we travel from the foyer down the hallway to the kitchen and a large living area, art that was dark and more serious gives way to more en ergetic, fun pieces. Smaller-size sculptures are featured, like an orb of ceramic bluebirds resting on a side table by local artist John Car roll Long. A smaller Váró sculpture of a female face, sitting on an antique table, is said to be the likeness of the artist’s daughter. As we become more comfortable conversing and enter the
Once the garden came to fruition, Nettles realized her “little old house could not stand up to the grandiose garden.” Undaunted, she embarked on yet another project; she tore down walls and replaced windows, rebuild ing the house from the ground up. Her goal was to maintain the basic footprint and feel of the home, while widening doorways and re sizing and revamping rooms, like the kitchen. Most importantly, she wanted “the house to sit comfortably in its natural setting.”
Finding the Magic
“Art is a bit of an obsession for me,” says Nettles. Of the pieces she owns, she says, “I think they are all beautiful, although not nec essarily classics.” There is a common thread in the art she chooses: “My mind can enter every painting, and I can walk around in it.” Nettles might not easily remember many of

“My art is basically an autobi ography of my life—for better or worse,” she explains. Nettles has been collecting art for 30 years and states she has always had an inter est in art—reading and making lots of notes about it. Interestingly, her formal postsecondary education has nothing to do with art. She earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Salem College and a graduate degree from Harvard in learn ing psychology. Although she has often stated she is done with buying art, if she sees something she must have and the budget allows, she will find a place for it. Has she passed on her passion to her grandkids? She’s not sure, but she mentions that they all stay in regular contact. Net tles also prioritizes giving back to the community, seeking those causes that focus directly on sav

Reflecting on how she successfully grew her spe cial paradise, Nettles identifies three factors: “do what you love, don’t listen to naysayers,” and “find a little bit of magic.” For her, the magic was in the form of Váró and Perillo—serendipitous encounters with people she might never have met had it not been for her desire to cultivate her passions. «
Whimsy and wonder emanate from this elegant, elongated table designed by Jayne Menke, owner of Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sherie Lynch Marek. The table features the art of Fort Myers-based artist Carlos Gámez de Francisco, who was born in Cuba. Gámez de Francisco’s work is heavily informed by the Russian Academy and often transforms history and reality into things they sometimes are not, including the provocative.
“I wanted to make the table impactful and bring art into an everyday setting,” says Menke, who hopes to open a gallery in Naples sometime soon. “I selected Carlos’ work because his paintings have such unique personality and celebrate the beauty of women.”

This harmonizes effortlessly with the floral arrangements spanning the heart of the table that include hydrangeas, peonies, daisies, and others. The tablescape’s capstone is the pastel bags containing guests’ table favors, which coordinate but don’t distract from its many flights of fancy.

ABLE TALK
The League Club’s Naples Tables event has skyrocketed, becoming a beloved philanthropic event in our area. More than 55 designers developed stunning tablescapes, raising funds for a worthy cause. As Christina Inslee, Naples Tables public relations director, recounts, “849 League Club members, friends, and designers embraced the opportunity to raise a record $635,500 for The Community Trust Fund.”

The Stuff of Dreams
While the field was fierce, Naples Illustrated has selected a few standout tables to share.
Gámez de Francisco’s imaginative art appears throughout the table on small canvas reproductions but is also on display in unexpected spots, including on plates and the vertical banners affixed to the back of guests’ chairs. The table is swathed in a custom-made light blue cloth with vivid flowers that add intense pops of color.

Perfect for an afternoon garden party or for bringing the outdoors in, this table flourishes fabulously—down to every imaginative detail. In collaboration with assistant designer Amy Bruener and floral designer Silvana Harper, Katherine Goodman, designer and owner of Naples-based Up for Grabs, explains she values the Naples Tables event for the creativity and ideas it imparts to attendees.
Garden Gathering
Setting the stage for this color-rich table is a leaf-themed tablecloth that coordinates seamlessly with layered placemats: a plum-hued one at bottom and a green-leafed one atop. The gold touches on the Bugatti flatware, the napkins, and the bird-graced plates radiate and add warmth, while the crystal water goblets and Champagne flutes evoke a baronial spirit without sliding into stuffiness. There are plenty of playful touches, too, including oyster-shaped salt wells and cored lemons holding white, cotton towelettes. As for the latter, which plays off the garden party theme exquisitely, Goodman notes, “I saw this idea years ago and thought it would be a great touch to the table.”

Goodman explains, “I love the event because it helps to inspire people, giving them ideas about what they can do at home. Plus, it’s for a wonderful cause.”
As Hop Up Shop Owner Penelope Kernen relates, “The Rabbit Run dinnerware featured on the table setting is part of our classic, core collection and is a great base for all the color and design in the line. … Playing up the bunny theme was an ode to Bunny Williams, this year’s honorary speaker, who sat at our table.”
Guests sitting at this animated table, designed by Hunt Slonem’s Hop Up Shop, will surely raise a glass to the bold and beautiful. Slonem, whose birth year aligns with the Chinese zodiac sign of the rabbit, is well-known for his design creations that showcase butterflies, tropical birds, and of course, bunnies.
Hares make an appearance throughout this vivid tablescape steeped in vibrantly toned details anchored by a gold-hued canvas. Multicolored lacquered placemats, a variety of plates and bowls, linen embroidered napkins, bunny-based vases holding jewel-toned roses, and other inclusions from the Rabbit Run collection whisk-er away guests as they await their culinary delights.

Monochromatic tones impart zen-like vibes to guests at Garden District’s muted table.
While many Naples Tables creations embrace the bold, this muted masterpiece by Naplesbased Garden District and Rufino Hernandez, owner/creative director, fascinates and enthralls its Hernandezonlookers. explains the table is designed to convey “a sense of peace and serenity.” At center stands the tree of life, from which calla lilies and glass waterdrop ornaments hang. White Buddha statues enhance the table’s zen-like mood. From pom-trimmed placemats to gold-embossed plates to coordinating striped napkins, all underpinned by a cappuccino-colored embroidered tablecloth, the table’s subdued, monochromatic tones help ensure guests relax and enjoy—perhaps even to the point of enlightenment. Natural colored palm frond fans artfully placed around the floral centerpieces suggest a relaxing tropicalEnhancingenvironment.the already impressive centerpiece are toffee roses combined with white calla lilies and white plumes, which inject both texture and dimension to the table. Every detail indicates careful consideration was given—even the seating. Wood-framed, webbed-cane chairs ensure guests sit comfortably while simultaneously enriching the table’s overall organic vibe.

hallways of The Beverly Hills Hotel, provides a backdrop for the pink placemats, polychromatic plates, and blushcolored napkins cinched by daisy-inspired napkin rings. Cups and saucers, flatware, and glassware complement the tablescape’s aesthetic but remain understated—no upstaging here. Also simplistic are the table’s floral arrangements, which contain verdant hydrangeas and aptly incorporated stargazer lilies. And the glitz and glam of it all doesn’t end for guests when they depart this A-list setting. The table favors ensure guests enjoy rock candy, lollipops, and Hollywood-themed cookies in style—while sporting retro sunglasses in classic black.
Lights, camera, action! This star-studded table in pink and green tints—created by Leilani Bennett, creative design director of Bennett Interiors/Home Philosophie in Na ples, alongside Brielle Cheff, Tim Holobinko, and Leila Alhassan—dishes out a hearty help ing of old Hollywood glamour. Tablemates will have plenty to remark about, including a sun dry Tinseltown cast that includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Robert Redford, and Audrey Hepburn who appear in perfectly placed black-and-white photographs.

There’s no doubt Wilfredo Emanuel has a knack for setting tables that marvel. This one, which the HGTV Table Wars star designed for Naples Illustrated, required an extensive installation and is based on a concept meant to mimic an NI magazine cover. As Emanuel explains, “I designed a frame that looks like a magazine, open on the side; if you look from far [back], the table is inside of the frame, so it looks like the actual cover.”
Green hydrangeas and other flowers pair with intricately braided palm leaves that are sculpted to form the centerpiece—a work of art in and of itself. While the black-shaded flatware is unique, the touches of gold that grace the table, including on the Champagne flutes, are what bestow shimmer and sparkle to the tablescape. «
Hands down the tallest table at the event, this creation’s details are just as impressive as its immensity. The black, white, and green colors used throughout the tablescape impart energy and vitality to guests making themselves cozy in pine-shaded velvet chairs. A tablecloth in a spirited black-and-white print sets a regal, luxurious stage for the dynamic details that rest upon it, including the lime-hued placemats taking the shape of fronds. Coordinating in color but diverse in pattern are black-and-white striped chargers and plates, as well as black-and-white polka-dotted bowls. Black-and-white striped candlesticks in matte black holders along with a black-and-white striped teapot add intensity, but these are well-balanced by the lush greenery found on, in, and around the tablescape.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
By Gaylene Salomons and Jane E. Enos
Forget making a statement; make a bold declaration with the dolls of Mariana Monteagudo, a highly recognized international contemporary artist, who creates mixed media sculptures from repur posed, upcycled materials. Monteagudo, who now lives in Miami, descends from a family of ceramists in Venezuela, and her work is rife with mystery, often addressing the obfuscated.
While personalizing their newly built home in the Park Shore area of Naples, Michael and Jodi Noble chose to design a custom door for their home office, situated just off the foyer. Bonanno assisted them with creating an 8-by-5-foot barn door of clear insulated glass outlined in white ash. At the door’s center and constructed also from white ash is an interlocking circular figure, a shape that is echoed in other rooms of their home.
This freestanding bathtub designed by Enzo Berti, carved from a single block of marble, welcomes the body with an ergonomic embrace. The tub rests on an iron base and appears to float in the air, free from its weight. With its upper profile at varying heights, entrance is facilitated, creating a stylish yet practical bathing space.

NAPLES HOME DESIGN EXPERTS ADVISE ON HOW TO INCORPORATE THE LATEST TRENDS IN WOOD TO COMPLEMENT THE BEAUTY OF SUNNY SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
“Wood creates endless possibilities,” says Ryan Hollenbaugh, president of Palm Brothers Remodeling. “It adds depth and character to a room. That’s what makes it so beautiful.”
Following are tips on how the latest in wood trends can elevate the decor of homes along the Paradise Coast. THE

NOT KNOTS. White oak dominates the Naples market, partly because large knots and texture have fallen out of favor for floors. “It’s clean, elegant, white, and bright, with a tight grain and minimal streaks or knots,” says Chris Cosentino, president of the Hadinger Company of Naples. “The days of distressed wood are out in Southwest Florida.”
FLOORINGHADINGEROFCOURTESY
EXPAND IT. Wider floor planks are in—some as wide as 12 inches, which is double the width of years past. But fear not. Chevrons and basket weaves still impress in entries and small areas. “Lately, though, clients want custom-engraved patterns in the foyer,” says Maciej “Machi” Dogiel, floor specialist/sales manager at Naples Flooring Company. “Nobody wants what their neighbor has.” As homeowners lighten up when it comes to hues underfoot, color currents have drifted from chilly white to warm honey tones, he notes.
That’s purely practical, says Hollenbaugh, who’s designed only one coffee bean–colored floor since moving to Naples from Boston. “Dark floors are like black cars. They show dirt more readily,” he says.
GO NATURAL. Some homeowners may seek emotional-escape rooms in tough times. “They want to bring nature
DON’T FAKE IT. If you want to be in fashion, invest in real hardwood floors over faux hardwoods of vinyl or tile. “The true beauty is hardwoods,” says Cosentino. “No planks are alike, so it’s like putting a piece of art on your floor.”
UPDATE IT. Freshen up your all-white kitchen by adding honey and natural wood tones. Or go bold, as in the current trend of contrasting islands and tray ceilings with more than one shade or texture, says Otterbeck.
DEFINE IT. Teak “ribs” or panels from the ceiling down a wall define areas within an open floor plan. So do ceiling trays, which also can ramp up the drama of chandeliers. “How we treat the ceiling really defines the room,” Hollenbaugh says.
“We’re doing a lot of contrasts, so most cabinets may be one color, with another color at the perimeter,” she says. “We’re seeing navy, black, and baby blues in kitchens and bathrooms. People are hav-
inside,” says Cori Craciun, owner of Sticks & Stones Collection. “Live-edge and two-toned wood consoles and tables are our best sellers right now. They’re warm and welcoming.”
ALLIKRISTÉOFCOURTESYHAMILTONLORI
“They remind me of driftwood from the ocean,” says Hollenbaugh. Still, the dark browns that are popular up north have migrated south with some of his snowbird customers in the form of floating wood shelves, cabinets, and entertainment centers.
says Matt Riley, CEO at Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild. “They might feature brassclad trim and wood interior panels.”
PARE IT. If you want to be in vogue, go beyond the pale. Deeper shades like chocolate are à la mode in northern climes, says Erin Otterbeck, vice president of operations in Naples for AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design. Even so, grays and white befit coastal sand and surf, so they won’t wash away soon.
Favored wood trends in Southwest Florida include use of natural tones in kitchens, darker ceiling beams, wider floor planks, live-edge tables, ceiling trays, and mixed trim pairings such as stone and metal.
PAIR IT. Mix things up. Use different materials—stone and metal trims, for instance.“We’re seeing wood, stone, and metal being integrated in vanities and cabinets,”
Beams add country flavor to an abode, with today’s versions leaning toward darker, rough-hewn looks. Regardless of hues, beams look best on high ceilings. Otherwise, they can bring down a house, making it visually claustrophobic. That’s also why restraint is needed in the number of beams or trays. Mute or lighten up colors from below.

“Recently we did a kitchen island in turquoise,” Hollenbaugh says, but the rest of the kitchen was in a neutral tint.

1. By all means, clean your wood floors, but skip polish. “You simply need to clean wood,” says Chris Cosentino, president of the Hadinger Company of Naples. First, find out the finish from the manufacturer to determine the type of cleaner needed. Then use a mop with a microfiber pad—not a broom, which could scratch the surface.
The key is proportion. It’s one thing to create a powder room in olive green, as one client did, and quite another to drown an expansive living room in a surprising shade, Otterbeck says. Chocolate vertical-grain cabinets work well between a light white-oak floor and a white ceiling with matching chocolate beams.
TIPS TO KEEP WOOD FLOORS
NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2022 119
2. When cleaning, don’t go natural. Vinegar can dull or erode finishes, according to the National Wood Flooring Association. Also, excess water can warp wood, so avoid steam cleaners and string mops.
3. Don’t refinish floors unless they are solid hardwood. “Those are extremely rare in Florida, where most floors are 1/4-inch thick due to the weather,” Cosentino says. The sole exception: Natural oil–finished floors may need oil reapplied in the most trafficked areas.

One place to buy superfresh stone crab all season is at the family-owned Grimm’s Stone Crab Inc. in the “Stone Crab Capital of the World,” Everglades City. It’s fun to visit the docks and see the catch come off the boat. Be sure to pick up the necessary mallets and shell crackers along with Key lime pie while you’re there. Fresh, crisp apples are synonymous with fall weather. Although we are not known for our apple orchards in Florida, we can certainly enjoy their bountiful fruits. Celebrate the slightly cooler temperatures and the season of harvest with my recipe for the Apple Blossom Fizz. In this fresh take on a whiskey fizz, apple juice, a squeeze of lemon, and a delicate jasmine syrup add zing. Topped with kombucha, this sparkling drink will brighten up any October occasion.

The Skinny ON SKIN
A good complexion results from regular, customized skin care. Pur pose Advanced Esthetics, which recently opened in downtown Na ples, offers standard services like facials and chemical peels, but it also provides free consultations and a personalized treatment plan. Licensed aesthetician and owner Genevieve Gosset wants to both help treat issues and educate clients. “The skin is your biggest organ and … that’s what people see,” she says. “I just love everything about the skin, on the medical and the beauty side of it.” Turn the page for several of Gosset’s tips to help care for your skin. (purposenaples.com) –Erika Klein
Genevieve Gosset, owner of Purpose Advanced Esthetics
Use vitamins. Vitamin A can help treat acne and reduce fine wrinkles. Gosset recommends starting gradually to help your skin adjust, since it may cause dryness and irritation at first. Applying vitamins C and E can help protect skin and provide antioxidants. “If you use the A, C, [and] E vitamins and you protect your skin with a sunscreen, I think this is really a good package that everybody should be using,” Gosset says.
Apply sunscreen, then apply it again. Putting sunscreen on your face in the morning is a great start, but don’t stop there. It’s important to reapply throughout the day.
Follow a regular routine at home. You can’t wave a magic wand—or just go get a facial—for perfect skin. While you can get regular professional treatments, she says most of the work happens at home with a regular regimen for morning and evening. “It’s like going to the gym; you cannot just go once and believe you’re going to have super abs after,” Gosset says.
If you’ve ever started to feel a headache or nausea in the car, you know motion sickness can make traveling an ordeal. Antihistamines are a common treatment, but taking them can make you feel drowsy and miss out on your trip, and drugs can cause side effects and reactions in some people. Carol L. Roberts, MD, medical director at the Naples Center for Functional Medicine, suggests natural remedies instead. Roberts recommends ginger as particularly effective for seasickness or airsickness. She pre fers fresh ginger, but notes that ginger capsules or tea work, too, as does ginger candy— just watch the sugar content. Her other primary recommendation for motion sickness is cocculus, a plant extract and homeopathic treatment you can find in health-food stores as small tablets. “I like to start with natural things, balance the body, and see what hap pens,” Roberts says. “If you need a drug, it’s always there.” (naplescfm.com) –E.K.
Create a routine you love. “I don’t believe in having 100 products at home,” says Gosset. “I’d rather have a few products that people like.” She adds, “It has to be simple; it has to be efficient; and it has to be products that you’re going to love to put on your skin.” —E.K.

Fizzy, sweet-tart, and ubiquitous, probiotic-packed kombucha has become a staple sip for the health-conscious. Naples resident Ashley Hadad started making the fermented tea for fun when she became interested in health and wellness after graduating from college, and eventually realized she could make a better version than many commercial products. She perfected her recipe and sold her kombucha to restaurants before starting her own business, True North Kombucha Hadad’s fermented beverages, which may help promote a healthy immune system, can be found at The Farm Stand at Naples Canning Co. You can try making it yourself at home, too. “It really is easier than you think,” says Hadad. For more, you can find numerous recipes for DIY kombucha online. (truenorthkombuchalife.com) –E.K.
Walking barefoot on the beach is not only relaxing, it may also improve your health. Earthing, also known as grounding, involves direct physical contact with the earth and its natural electric charge. Jennifer Khosla, a mind-body wellness practitioner and owner of Lean and Green Body in Naples, engages in the practice daily. “On days I can’t make it to the beach or the park, I walk through my backyard barefoot, connecting with the ground beneath me,” she says. “It helps lower my stress, rids me of any anxiety I may be experiencing, and helps me to stay present in my life.” Though few studies have been done on earthing, some research indicates it may reduce pain, stress, and inflammation while improving sleep and blood flow. Earthing is easy to do, and with these potential benefits, there’s little reason not to try it. (leanandgreenbody.com) —E.K.

BEYOND THE SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT
For guys who are interested in a pedicure but feel self-conscious in places that mostly cater to women, the recently opened Naples location of Hammer & Nails Grooming Shop for Guys has your back. “What’s missing in men’s grooming in Naples is the ‘total man care,’ as we call it,” says owner Rick Sander. “The traditional barber shop does haircuts and possibly a straight-razor shave, but we take it a few steps further,” offering beard shaping, hand and foot care, massage, and more—as well as haircuts. Sander says stigma exists around some services for men, such as manicures and pedicures. With that in mind, the shop seeks to help men feel comfortable with large leather chairs, a private, relaxed environment, and a beer or wine. “I think guys want to look good, they want to feel good, and they could be proud of it,” he says. such as magnesium, vitamin D, zinc, and omega-3s. In fact, magnesium deficiency has been linked with low melatonin production.
There are numerous ways you can improve your sleep through your diet. For example, cherries, especially tart cherries or Montmorency cherries, have been shown to increase melatonin levels; consuming just 6 ounces of cherry juice can increase the body’s ability to use tryptophan. Plants and herbs—including chamomile, valerian, and lavender—can also help relax the nervous system. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your pillowcase, dilute it and apply it to your forehead, or add culinary lavender to your tea. Read on for more tips for better sleep.

Melatonin is a hormone that the brain’s pineal gland produces in response to darkness. Maybe you’ve heard of the importance of seeing the sun first thing in the morning and avoiding screens in the bedroom to help set your circadian rhythm (the internal clock that controls the sleepwake cycle). When we have trouble sleeping, we often chalk it up to too much stress, too many intrusive thoughts, too much blue light, or an overall feeling of restlessness. When that sleep-wake cycle feels off and sleep is hard to come by, many of us are quick to turn to sleeping pills or synthetic melatonin. However, what most people are unaware of is that your gut produces 400 times more melatonin than your brain does. How does this work? The gut microbiome (a collection of trillions of gut bacteria) converts nutrients from your food into serotonin, which is the moodstabilizing hormone that can be thought of as the building blocks for melatonin, the sleep hormone. The body does this beautifully, if the gut microbiome is balanced and we are getting adequate nutrition and vitamins—primarily an amino acid called tryptophan and vitamins

For centuries, the seeds from these eastern and southern Asian plants have been harvested and cold-pressed for their nourishing oil, renowned as a beauty secret of geishas in Japan. Camellia oil is lightweight yet rich in moisturizing oleic acid, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, B, D, and E. It also lends an intoxicating note to fragrance. The new season at Artis—Naples kicks into high gear this month. This year’s overall theme, “Distance— Devotion,” reflects how the world has dramatically changed over the past three years through division and maladies. As CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen explains, the importance of love, loyalty, and shared experiences needs to be emphasized.
From exhibitions to performances, art in its myriad forms inspires humans to overcome the distance and division in life, whether real or perceived, and to focus on the importance of love and devotion.

A rare sighting of two double ghost orchids (Dendrophylax lindenii) blooming in the Flor ida Everglades was captured by Naples-based photog rapher Dennis Goodman in June 2012. These somewhat frog-shaped perennial flora only bloom once a year—and for approximately a week—if at all. Typically, ghost orchids are found in subtropical regions and can be spotted in Florida growing on the pop ash, pond apple, and bald cypress trees. Goodman, who is a self-taught photographer, waded through chest-deep swamp waters to capture this elegant pair that seemingly floats against a deep, verdant backdrop. He owns and operates a gallery in Naples, located at 941 Fourth Avenue North. manphotography)tography.com;(dennisgoodmanpho@dennisgood
