FROM THE EDITOR

I’ve only left the Sunshine State twice in the past 18 months, and that makes me feel a little cuckoo. The antidote is the Cush Family 7th Annual (well, except for last summer) Road Trip to New York and Connecticut. Look out Griswolds, we’re coming for you. Since we moved to Florida and away from our big combined family, Mike and I pack the three kids in the car and head north to catch up with longtime friends from high school and college and our parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. I am especially looking forward to hugging and seeing my parents in person for the first time since November 2020. I know my nieces and nephews are going to look so much more grown-up than they’ve been coming across on FaceTime. My parents and siblings are going to freak out about how much my own kids have matured. We have a barbecue planned for my dad’s eightieth birthday and although we’re keeping it simple and lowkey, I know it will feel epic after all this time apart. So many of you have expressed that you are ready to get out of Dodge, too. I mean, not that we are complaining about living in beautiful Naples. Yet, wanderlust is real and summer is usually a wonderful time to explore parts of the world that we haven’t seen yet and are curious about. Although enjoying sections of Europe might still be tricky, this summer there are plenty of ways to enrich your life with travel within our nation and abroad. It is likely going to be less spontaneous travel than some of us may prefer, but at least it’s something. To take the guesswork out of which countries are opening up, what the COVID-19 restrictions or protocols might be, and more, our travel experts in Naples are an expert resource. We talked to two of them in our Summer Fun issue. On page 30, we chat with Lisa McCarthy from Mad Travel about what’s trending in travel this summer. Then, on page 54, we talk with Olga Placeres of Preferred Travel about where’s she’s been, where she wants to go again, and what’s on her bucket list. For more inspiration to be adventurous, check out our cover star Adrienne Gilhart, who recently discovered she’s a natural at freediving and spearfishing (page 60). If you prefer adventures on dry land, we’ve got plenty of Florida foodie road trips (page 64) and RV state park guides (page 92) to add to your itineraries. Just don’t forget to pack the bug spray and sunscreen.

INSIDER DESIGN

If you’re a Downton Abbey fan, you may remember Lady Mary’s iconic blue pleated Delphos gown, worn in the 2019 movie. However, what you may not know is that the frock was produced in collaboration with the textile house Fortuny, makers of the original Delphos gown, created in 1907. And while vintage gowns may be what first come to mind when you hear the lauded Fortuny name, high fashion is only a small part of the story that brings them halfway around the globe to Naples. What’s so special about Fortuny fabric? Established in early-1900s Venice by noted artist, inventor, and designer Mariano Fortuny, the company continues to produce some of the world’s finest printed fabrics—made on the same machines in the very factory where it all began. The creation process involves secret techniques passed along in trust from one generation to the next. (continued)

The collection is also comprised of mohair velvets, cashmere/silk velvets, and striped wools, all in a colorful array, making them easy to blend with existing decor or new design schemes. “We are honored that our Naples showroom will be the area’s exclusive home for the fabulous Fortuny line,” says Daniel Lubner, CEO of Clive Daniel. “The match of such a revered name with the skill level of our design team will take our clients’ home interiors to the next level.” (fortuny.com; clivedaniel.com) —Lynne Groth

In looking ahead to the 2021 centennial of the Venice factory, Clive Daniel Home, one of Naples’ largest interior design firms and high-end furniture retailers, has added this exclusive Italian luxury brand’s textiles and furnishings to its lines. They kicked off the business relationship with a series of small events to introduce this elegant fabric to batches of clients, who had the opportunity to see and feel the yards of cloth, as well as learn about the brand’s heritage. “Clive Daniel shares our passion for delivering luxury and quality, and has led the way in their market for decades,” says Fortuny CEO Mauri Riad, who was on hand at the events to greet guests and share brand stories. The real beneficiaries of this partnership are Naples’ sophisticated interior designers and their discerning clients, who will have unparalleled access to Fortuny’s sought-after patterns and

BOATING 101

NAVIGATING THE FLORIDA GULF There has been a major increase in boat sales within the past 10 months in Southwest Florida. With more people out on the water, it’s important to remind residents about boating safety and where they can get licensed in Naples. George Kartsimas is the district staff officer of public education at the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He’s been working for the Coast Guard for the past 25 years. In his career, Kartsimas has served as a search-and-rescue pilot and in helicopter ops. But he says his most important job is what he does now at the Flotilla 93 station in Naples— teach recreational boating safety to residents. “An educated boater is a safe boater,” says Kartsimas. “The first thing law enforcement is going to ask you is whether you have a Florida 28

Boaters ID card, and if you say ‘yes,’ they’re going to smile because they know they’re speaking to an educated boater that took a Coast Guard class. If you say ‘no,’ they’re going to wonder why you haven’t taken the course.” Southwest Florida boating laws require boaters to have a Florida Boating Safety ID card, which can be earned through Kartsimas’ Basic Boating Safety and Seamanship course or an equivalent. In the class, students learn navigation, basic weather, Florida boating laws, GPS, and local tips. “In boating, there are laws and everyone needs to know what the rules of the road, or the sea, are,” he says. Soon, his boating classes will also be available online. (cgaux.org) —Mackenzie Griffith

INSIDER NAPLES NOTES

MAD ABOUT TRAVELING Lisa McCarthy and her husband Lee are dogloving outdoors enthusiasts who’ve owned and operated Mad Travel in Naples since 1994, when they bought it from the original founders. Like many couples who work together, they’ve figured out their groove: Lee is on the front lines with clients while Lisa handles the back-office stuff, and together they manage a team of selling agents. Lisa landed in Naples in 1985, when she came to check out her parents’ new digs on Marco Island. Lee hails from Michigan and moved to Southwest Florida to be in the hospitality business. After they met, they realized they were each other’s ideal travel buddy and life partner. “Our first big trip together was to Africa,” Lisa recalls. “We had the incredible opportunity to go on a safari.” Thanks to COVID-19, much of the McCar-

thys’ work throughout 2020 and into 2021 involved cancelling and rebooking clients’ trips. Now, Lisa is happy to report, “We have interest in future travel. People see value in what we do, and they wouldn’t want to navigate it themselves.” Recent clients are seeking domestic destinations with international vibes. Being wonderful researchers with long-established connections to travel suppliers, the McCarthys can send their clients “places in the U.S. they’ve never been to before,” Lisa notes. “We know where to go and we have people on the ground in those places to make recommendations and give personal service, so our travelers are always taken care of,” she adds. Although summer travel to Europe looks iffy, since some countries are still in and out of

SMALL BUSINESS

He’s got the BEETS

The Not a Burger is a gluten-free, non-GMO, plant-based creation by chef David Robbins. This veggie burger does not try to taste like meat—it’s just plants being plants. A mixture of beets, ancient grains, heirloom lentils, pigeon peas, and wholegrain oats marry to give a fresh flavor, providing a filling meal with 20 grams of protein and plenty of antioxidants per serving. Growing up in Hawaii, Robbins was surrounded by vegetarians and vegans, so he has long been sensitive to plantbased lifestyles. With this culinary venture, Robbins hopes to also appeal to meat-eaters and children. Robbins has crafted to-go kits that provide ingredients, directions, and preparation suggestions to feed four. The kit also contains tantalizing fixings such as locally grown organic lettuce, mushrooms, and heirloom tomatoes plus gourmet condiments and garnishes such as gochujang paste barbeque sauce, homemade white truffle veganaise, and artisan pickles from Naples Canning Company. BAY DESIGN RENOVATES ITS BRAND A week before the pandemic struck, Susan Bay, founder of the Susan Bay Design store, cut the ribbon of her North Naples location. Her store thrived as people sought to maximize comfort within their homes during the pandemic. Now the Bay Design Store is expanding its downtown location to include a 2,000-square-foot interior design studio specializing in architecture detailing and spatial planning. The private space will provide homeowners, builders, architects, and contractors a welcoming environment to discuss plans. Deana Skelly, one of the creatives heading the design of the studio, says it will give designers space to view and modify designs, present floor and furniture finishes, and display art and fabrics. “When clients come to the studio, we want them to feel comfortable, welcomed, and inspired in a space that showcases how we work,” Skelly says. The business will also be streamlining its name to Bay Design. Construction began in the late spring and the studio will be open by early fall. (baydesignstore.com) —Kalia Richardson

Brighter Days Ahead

Upon shedding its gloomy Tuscan roots, this 8,500-square-foot home in Quail West Golf and Country Club transformed into a timeless, traditional comfort zone By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Randall Perry Photography Paint is powerful. When you cover mustard, brown, and dark green ceilings and walls with icy blues, silver, and soft whites, the result is similar to opening all the doors and windows and filling a four-bedroom home with fresh air. Pops of blush further extend a breezy color palette. “I don’t think there was a surface in this house

that wasn’t painted, polished, or embellished in some way,” says interior designer Beth Walker-Fenton of Jinx McDonald Interior Designs in Naples. The overhaul took nearly a year to complete, as all of the faux treatments were removed—most notably, the round yellow living NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2021

room pillars—and were replaced with serene touches like custom white wood columns. The clients opted to keep the rare sunny travertine flooring running throughout. Because the home was sold fully furnished, the new owners gradually eliminated the ubiquitous heavy window treatments. Walker-Fenton worked many existing pieces of furniture into the design and gave them new life. “The goal was to lighten the home and give it an air of effortless sophistication,” the designer says. “We didn’t want it to feel heavy or stuffy.” Most months, the designer’s clients reside on a small estate in England. But once winter sets in, the couple commutes across the pond. When in Naples, they entertain guests frequently, and often serve appetizers and drinks in the gracious living room. To make this space inviting, Walker-Fenton selected high-end performance fabrics for the two companion chairs adjacent to the living room sofa. Edged in European embroidered tape, they are fabulous and practical. Design details are important to the clients and can be found throughout the residence. In the living room, every other pleat on the window cornice features a tiny button sewn into the

To tie the breakfast nook (below, right) in with the kitchen, the same fabric was used in the nook’s cornice and on the back of the kitchen bar chairs. middle of the fold. On the valance’s bottom, a band of hundreds of sparkling crystal balls runs fully across, creating a gentle shimmer—like faraway stars hovering above the wall of French doors. The striking design opens to a flowery terrace and tranquil pond. “It is the little details she wanted throughout the home that make it so amazing,” WalkerFenton says. “It elevates it and takes it to a different level.” In the formal dining space, a linear version of the silver-leafed living room chandelier overlooks the elegant glass-top dining table. The painting is from the owner’s personal collection. “Guests feel so comfortable having dinner in the dining room that they linger in there, and that’s what you want in a

dining room,” notes the designer. Initially painted a heavy cream with a glaze, the kitchen cabinetry was refinished and painted an off-white. Countertops were replaced with Taj Mahal quartzite. “Taj has more depth than granite, with its wispy and dramatic marble-like veins, and is far more handsome and is as resilient,” the designer explains. To tie the breakfast nook and kitchen together, the same fabric on the kitchen bar-chair backs was applied to the nook’s cornice. The very comfortable family room is all about relaxing. In the back of the media room, the custom sofa was the perfect shape and size, so Walker-Fenton simply re-covered it in a very soft performance fabric in a velvety, frosty blue. Walls were updated with a rich grass cloth. Fully carpeted, the relaxing master bedroom suite is where the owners have cof-

selected by an information technologist, which was created to make the look more appealing. To soften the stone and other hard surfaces in the master bath, the designer painted it a soothing white. Next, she appointed it with tufted ottomans and jewelry-like lighting and pulls. The large crystal chandelier overhead further accentuates the space. All three guest bedrooms are en suite. While most have budget-friendly pieces, the blue bedroom features a custom striped bench at the foot of the king-sized bed. Outside, plush chairs and sofas ensconced beneath a rich, dark-stained cypress wood ceiling ensure time spent in the fresh air is pleasant. The owners selected the giraffe sculptures in the opening above the fireplace. At night, the home’s exterior is the star of the show: It lights up to highlight the home’s

fabulous landscaping. “The couple couldn’t be more thrilled,” Walker-Fenton says. “Pre-COVID, they spent only two or three months here, but with travel restricted, they were so grateful to have such a lovely place to hunker down. It worked out nicely for them.” «

The outdoor space has plenty of seating to accommodate guests and ensure their time in the fresh air is comfortable.

Adds Howlett, “Soft white walls and cabinetry act as a background for the art collection, while the warm wood tones create an inviting atmosphere with playful colors placed throughout with accessories. ith a complement of waterfalls, ice caves, black-sand beaches, and glacial volcanoes, Iceland offers an otherworldly escape for Americans who have completed their COVID-19 vaccinations. While a visit to the capital city of Reykjavik is a must-do, a two-hour drive to Iceland’s South Coast gives travelers access to some of the island’s most awe-inspiring attractions. Southern Iceland’s wide-open spaces offer plenty of room to socially distance. While the Fagradalsfjall volcano—which began erupting near Reykjavik in March—remains untamed, Iceland has kept the COVID-19

The South Coast offers epic waterfalls, including Gljúfrabúi: Concealed by a cliff, it often sits unnoticed next to the tourist-favored, 200foot Seljalandsfoss waterfall. To get there you’ll wade through a shallow stream into a mossy cave, where gushing water theatrically cascades into a small pool lit as if by a spotlight. Or visit the mighty Gullfoss falls—unique in that you can take in their glory from above instead of below. But Iceland offers more than just waterfalls. For bubbling mud pots and boiling hot springs, make your way to the Geysir geothermal area or try Thingvellir National Park (thingvellir.is/en), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and drift apart. If you skipped the Blue Lagoon, stop at the nearby Secret Lagoon (secretlagoon.is) to dip in a lesscrowded, man-made pool fed by hot springs.

You’ll feel the power of Mother Nature on the volcanic black-sand beaches of Reynisfjara, where towering sea stacks jut from the Atlantic Ocean and powerful waves thunder ashore. The jagged basalt cliffs (a backdrop for cinematic works like Game of Thrones and Star Wars) are a perfect spot to snap Instagram-worthy pictures—but beware of sneaker waves, which have swept away unsuspecting visitors. To see the landscape from a slower pace, opt for a tour via native Icelandic horses by making reservations at Skeiðdvellir (skeidvellir.is), a horse-breeding farm. Guided tours take riders through scenic meadows in the shadows of volcanoes and glaciers. If you visit southern Iceland during winter, explore the area’s ethereal ice caves with a guide from Southcoast Adventure (it’s dangerous to explore ice caves on your own) (southadventure.is). Inside a glacier atop the Katla volcano are wind-carved walls of curved ice in brilliant hues of blue. You’ll walk, crawl, and sometimes slide on your belly through mysterious passageways. Turn off your flashlight and the ice will twinkle like a star-filled sky.

In Iceland, a glacier cave tour should be accompanied by a guide. A stay at Hotel Rangá is the perfect way to recharge in luxury after a long day spent exploring icy landscapes.

ICELANDIC HOSPITALITY

To spend days exploring, refueling is key. Don’t miss lunch at Friðdheimar (fridheimar.is), a beautiful greenhouse where you’ll dine on delicious tomato-inspired dishes and sip drinks among colorful crops. Or stop in at family-run Efstidalur Farm (efstidalur.is), where they turn their cows’ milk into organic ice cream in a

range of flavors every day. When it’s time to recharge, opt for a stay at Hotel Rangá (hotelranga.is), a luxury hotel perched along the East Rangá River. The countryside retreat recalls an elegant log cabin, with rooms boasting soaking tubs, balconies, and heated bathroom floors (welcome luxuries after outdoor explorations). Tangerine DREAM

Lamborghini’s new fast and furious Huracán EVO RWD Spyder is a party for the senses By Howard Walker We all know about endorphins, the spunky polypeptides produced by the body to stimulate feelings of immense pleasure. Eating chocolate and drinking wine are great endorphin releasers, but there’s another source of endorphin production that’s far more effective than any Godiva or Pinot Noir. Let me introduce you to the newest offering from Lamborghini, the tangerine dream machine known as the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder. The endorphins this 602-horsepower, V-10 engined beauty delivers are up there with hearing Pavarotti hit the high notes of “Nessun Dorma” or receiving a basket of kittens to cuddle. 56

There aren’t enough superlatives in Webster’s to adequately describe the way this hurricane-force machine can slingshot itself off the line, dragster-style. Nothing prepares you for the ensuing mayhem as this rocket ship spins its rear wheels like a Fourth of July pinwheel, lunging at the horizon in a haze of flambéed rubber. I’ve driven plenty of superfast cars; this one scared the snot out of me. Time, perhaps, for CliffsNotes on the raging bull from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. Introduced in 2014, the Huracán replaced the much-loved Gallardo as the first rung on the ladder of Lamborghini ownership. Over the

years it evolved first into the Huracán Performante, then the EVO. But it always stuck with all-wheel drive to help wrangle all that power—and keep drivers out of the hedgerows. For purists, having all-wheel drive has been a bone of contention. They argue that it somehow desensitized the car, taking away the raw, driverfocused, laser-precise responses. Last year, however, the wraps came off the Huracán EVO RWD, with that honking mid-mounted 5.2-liter V-10 spinning just the rear rims. More nimble and tailhappy, it instantly became the most fun-driving old-school Lambo money could buy. And speaking of lira, the base price of the Florida-orange Spyder convertible is $229,428, around $15,000 more than the $214,366 Coupe version. Must-have add-on options easily take the sticker north of $250,000. Toggle a switch and that tight-fitting canvas roof powers back, disappearing beneath a hard cover in a mere 17 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. Top down, the Huracán makes a terrific convertible, with hardly any wind

buffeting, even at close to triple-digit velocities. Having the top dropped is all the better for inhaling a manic Guns N’ Roses soundtrack. Inside, you sit in hip-hugging carbon fiber–shelled seats, gripping a wheel that looks straight out of a race car. The theater that goes into operating this orange projectile is so very Italian—flick up a big red flap to hit the start button, pull back on an oversized lever to engage reverse, and shift gears with paddle shifters the size of elephant ears; Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick would feel right at home. This newest Huracán is a pure and passionate assault on the senses. In today’s hyper-car world, 0-to-60 in 3.3 seconds is nothing special: There are kid-toting Teslas that get there in 2.4, as will the all-wheel-drive Huracán EVO. But the fury of the RWD’s acceleration, the brutal 8,000-rpm upshifts, and that truly spine-tingling, hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck-raising soundtrack makes it feel like the Starship Enterprise hitting warp speed. Rear-drive-only boosts those endorphins. The

ESCAPE HIGH SEAS

The Return of PILAR

Ernest Hemingway’s LEGENDARY fishing boat has been reborn in the new Wheeler 38 By Howard Walker

W

es Wheeler remembers the call. It was Andy Garcia on the phone. The Untouchables star was making a movie about Ernest Hemingway and his longtime fishing captain, Gregorio Fuentes. Garcia needed to find a replica of Papa Hemingway’s beloved boat, Pilar, and was looking for suggestions. Wheeler is the great-grandson of the Wheeler Shipyard founder. Back in 1934, Hemingway took delivery of a fresh Wheeler 38 Playmate from the Brooklyn yard, paying the then-princely sum of $7,495 for the black-hulled beauty. Christening it Pilar, the nickname of his second wife, Pauline, Hemingway owned the boat for 30 years, chasing big-game fish around the Caribbean and writing most of The Old Man and the Sea from its cockpit while docked in Havana. Alas, nothing came of the movie, which was to have starred Anthony Hopkins as

58

Hemingway, with Garcia playing Fuentes. But it did rekindle a dream for Wes Wheeler. “I decided I wanted to bring Pilar back to life and build a brand-new version using the newest technologies,” he tells me during this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show. Doing so would be a challenge. His greatgrandfather’s company had shuttered in 1965 after building more than 3,500 boats. But Wheeler knew every inch of Pilar after a visit to Havana with Hemingway’s niece, Hilary Hemingway, in 2012. She had co-written the Hemingway & Fuentes movie script with Garcia and had asked Wheeler to fly down and measure the original Pilar in case a movie replica had to be built. Fast-forward to March of this year and Wheeler is giving me a tour of his brand-new Wheeler 38, which is rocking gently at the dock. It’s hull #1, but he hopes to build more for any classic-

boat enthusiasts with around $1.3 million to spare. Legend, as the new boat is called, is a body-double of Hemingway’s beloved fishing boat; everything above the waterline is a perfect copy, based on Wheeler’s exacting measurements from the Cuba trip and historic documents kept by his great-grandfather. Below the waterline, however, her hull has been modified to run fast, at speeds up to 34 mph—more than twice what Pilar could achieve—and include the kind of features Papa Hemingway could only dream about. In place of a single 70-horsepower Chrysler gas motor, Legend features twin 370-hp Yanmar diesels, with a super-quiet Cummins Onan generator to run the air conditioning and a SeaKeeper gyro stabilizer to tame any rock and roll. Rather than investing in a new boatyard, Wheeler turned to the wooden boat artisans at

Brooklin Boat Yard in Brooklin, Maine. They crafted the new hull from cold-molded epoxy and fitted it out using Douglas fir, rich African mahogany, and teak. As in Pilar, the huge cockpit is perfect for reeling in those fighting tuna and swordfish, while the long hardtop does a good job of providing shade from the sun. Two large cockpit sofas make an ideal place to enjoy a refreshing Cuba libre when happy hour hits. Wheeler is especially proud of the way the

helm station keeps modern technology hidden away to retain the traditional look and feel of Hemingway’s original. To fire up the twin diesels, you need to slide open a small varnished mahogany panel; to program the autopilot and speed and depth read-outs, you lift another mirror-varnished panel. Another highlight is Legend’s classic stainless-steel steering wheel: Brooklin Boat Yard tracked down a 1934 original, digitized it, and had a new one cast.

Down below, the layout has changed dramatically from Hemingway’s bunk beds and spartan feel; comfort wasn’t too high on Papa’s priority list. Forward, there’s now a comfy master cabin with a double bed and a convertible dinette in the saloon, along with two custom leather chairs and a well equipped galley and head. “It really has been an exciting and rewarding project to recreate what is often described as the most famous fishing boat in the world,” says Wheeler. “My next dream, naturally, would be to take her down to Cuba and relive a few of Hemingway’s adventures.” «

an you dive 60 feet underwater and hold your breath for 80 seconds while shooting a prized fish? Adrienne Gilhart can, making it back to the top of the water’s surface with a gorgeous catch and a feeling of accomplishment. Gilhart sought out challenges early on. She jumped in the pool at age two, started swim lessons at three, rode horses at six, learned to scuba dive at ten; she swam competitively for many years, but just two years ago, she discovered a love for spearfishing. Little did she know, this new adventure would lead to winning the women’s division of the 2020 Florida Spearfishing Tournament after shooting a 25-inch hogfish. NI caught up with the adventurer days before she set out to Key West and the Dry Tortugas for some deep-sea challenges. NI: How did you become interested in freediving and spearfishing? Gilhart: Two years ago, my boyfriend, Casey Panepinto, and I went to the Florida Keys to go freediving and lobstering. I was 25 feet down in gorgeous, clear water, waiting for Casey to help me get the lobster. He kept signaling me to come up, but because I can hold my breath for a long time, I kept waving him down. That’s when Casey realized how good my breath hold was. The spearfishing started shortly after, when we went out on a friend’s boat. I was going to work on my freediving. When I went down, bull sharks were everywhere. I wasn’t scared, but I didn’t have a gun. We came up and Casey said I needed to have a gun for safety. Someone mentioned that there was a black and white fish 50 feet down if I wanted to shoot it. Back underwater, I saw the fish and I took the shot. That was it. I was hooked. Tell us about winning the 2020 Florida Spearfishing Tournament Women’s Free Diving Category. We were in the Tortugas for my birthday, and hogfish were in my category for the Spearfishing Tournament. This was 62

something I really wanted to accomplish. The tricky part is that hogfish are hard to see, as they camouflage by not moving. On the fourth dive, I finally saw one. Suddenly, I became extremely calm. I thought, This is what I’m supposed to do. I lined it up and took a shot. I stoned the fish. It was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. Turned out this 25-inch hogfish was the winning entry, and damn, it sure tasted good. What’s a perfect day in Naples for you? I’d wake up early and head to Benchmark Equestrian to ride horses. I’m an amateur, but I help train horses for competitive jumping. On my way home, I’d go to Meridian Café with my pup Joey for a late breakfast. After that, I’d throw on a suit from Old Naples Surf Shop and head out to the boat to catch dinner. If we snag something, we’ll invite friends over to enjoy a freshly speared fish. If we don’t, we’ll stop by Lake Park Diner or Celebration Park, as they’re outside and we can show up in our boat clothes. Any thoughts for folks who might be interested in unusual hobbies? Yes! Do not back down from the challenge of learning everything you can. It’s important to pursue your passions whether they are related to a career or not, because you’ll have a happier life. Every day is another opportunity to make it count. Never be afraid to ask questions or reach out to people who inspire you. I’ve been lucky to meet incredible people along the way, from my horse trainer and swim coaches to my amazing boyfriend, Casey. Go for it! «

WHERE TO STAY The variety of accommodation types at the five-hotel collection that is the Kimpton Key West (kimptonkeywest.com)—from original Bahamian-style “conch cottages” to elegant guesthouses—isn’t the only draw of the digs. Foodies will find lots to love, too: Book a Hemingway Affair for an intimate dining experience for two to 14 people in the two-story Hemingway Suite, during which a personal chef will prepare a multi-course meal suited to guests’ tastes; for a more casual culinary detour, kick back at poolside bars with a can of Cayo Hueso, the hotel’s own brew crafted by local Waterfront Brewery and exclusively available at Kimpton Key West.

When it opened in 2007, The Ravenous Pig (theravenouspig.com) heralded the city’s arrival as a serious food destination. Nearly 15 years later, owners James and Julie Petrakis continue to grow their gastropub into one of the best restaurants in the South. The addition of former Dovecote chef-owner Clay Miller as chef de cuisine only solidified the Pig’s rep as the place to indulge in elevated pub fare with a Southern twang (mulard duck ham, lamb saddle, or pork burnt ends, anyone?). On tap are small-batch craft beers produced by the Ravenous Pig Brewing Co., which is situated next to the restaurant’s newly constructed family-friendly beer garden.

Kevin and Maria Ruiz have garnered a loyal, almost obsessive following for presenting upmarket takes on classic Peruvian fare at their pop-ups. When they finally opened Papa Llama (papallamaorl.com), a brick-and-mortar operation in Orlando’s Curry Ford West district, they were greeted with a buzz. The bright, modern space reflects the dishes Kevin fires up in the sizeable kitchen, like chicharrón de calamar with herbaceous wakatay salsa, and a snappy arroz chicken chaufa with smoky ají panca, Peruvian choclo, and bok choy. The focused selection of natural wines purposefully veers into the esoteric.

Staying at The Alfond is more than a getaway—proceeds from the hotel support Rollins College’s premier scholarship fund, offering up to 10 full scholarships each year to first-year students. And don’t overlook the hotel’s prestigious art collection donated by Rollins College alumni Barbara and Ted Alfond. Designed as an imaginative extension of the college’s Cornell Fine Arts Museum, more than 300 pieces by established and emerging artists are displayed on rotation throughout the hotel’s public areas.

Deli Desires (delidesires.com) opened this year to major buzz—hardly surprising given the credentials owners Hannah Jaffe and Nathan Sloan bring to their Colonialtown breakfast-and-lunch joint. Jaffe cooked alongside L.A. notables Jessica Koslow and Michael Voltaggio, while Sloan worked under James Beard Award winners Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo at seafood joint Son of a Gun. But it’s the bialy—the nonboiled, malt-free counterpart to the bagel with a caramelized onion, or smoked jalapeño and muenster, center— that the pair spotlight at their hip little takeaway joint. Get one filled with gravlax, labneh, or even scrapple (this is not a kosher deli), or opt for the corned beef “big mac” served on a Martin’s sesame seed bun. THE GORE NATURE EDUCATION CENTER IS OPEN THIS SUMMER FOR PRE-SCHEDULED WEEKEND TOURS; MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AT CCLANDKEEPERS.COM

Deciding to move to Naples while vacationing in Southwest Florida has been known to happen, especially as of late. However, Christy Duff’s journey to Naples residency is unusual, and a bit more old-fashioned. In 2017, her doctor in northern New York thought a warmer climate would help her overcome continued health problems. This was the type of classic prescription that once sent United States presidents and industry bigwigs to the Sunshine State. Christy and her husband, Shane, thought they’d try Naples, maybe just for six months. After the Duffs married in 2006, they honeymooned at the La Playa Beach & Golf Resort. So, when Christy had to find herself a healthier place to live, she naturally thought of Naples. One day, after relocating here in December 2017, they toured the Rookery Swamp, the no man’s land off the interstate on the way to Miami. They were a thousand miles from where they used to live, but they felt even further than that, like they had been transported to the primordial world of the dinosaurs. The natural limestone that once served as a seabed rises and falls there, as trails cut through firebush and around ancient cypress. “There’s such beauty in it,” Christy recalls. “It’s just so raw.” With her health improving, Christy and Shane made a home in Naples and continued exploring nature. They also chose a meaningful quest: to preserve swamps like the one that had so captured their imagination. Shane now sits as board president of the Cypress Cove Landkeepers, a nonprofit that aims to buy and preserve as much of Southwest Florida’s native land as it can. Christy spends a lot of her free time working for the organization, handling their robust social media presence and taking classes through the University of Florida’s Florida Master Naturalist Program, planning for what’s next. The Landkeepers’ efforts began with the $203,000 purchase in 2019 of 10 acres that were once the home of late zoologist Bob Gore. The stilt home he designed himself is

076_DUFF_0721.indd 79

now the Gore Nature Education Center, which the Landkeepers are restoring to use as a welcome center and hub for educating visitors on the value of wild local spaces. Gore got the preservation bug in the early 1980s, when he began purchasing land piece by piece to create a 180-acre sanctuary. Back then, Gore had recently retired and was renting a condo on a golf course in Naples, plotting out an idea he had dreamed about for decades: to create a sanctuary. His son, Dan Gore, recalls coming to visit his father in 1986. They spent the night looking for a sighting of Halley’s

Above, Shane jumps up to the sign that hangs over the original driveway into Naithloriendun, the name zoologist Bob Gore first gave to the lands he transformed into a sanctuary in the 1980s; at left, native flora and fauna thrive thanks to Gore’s efforts and the ongoing efforts of the Duffs.

Comet while talking about his dad’s efforts to assemble various parcels of untouched forest. Dan Gore returned to visit his father again in 1990. By then, Bob Gore had built his cracker-style home on an elevated spot, 10 feet above the nearby swampland. During the day, the Gores cut the first trails through the property; at night, they stayed up late playing music that rang out through the forest. They’d wake in the morning to the sounds of the jungle around them. “It was truly a magnificent house in the middle of the forest,” recalls Dan, who now lives in Port St. John and has worked as a software developer for the space industry for 32 years. When Bob Gore died in 2017, the land passed to a trust in hopes of preserving it. That almost didn’t happen, and Dan says he feared it would end up in the hands of a developer. Instead, local environmentalists Bobby Lee Davenport and Jo Vaccarino worked to raise the funds and create the organization that would become the Landkeepers. Then the Duffs showed up, and Dan says they’ve been “extremely instrumental in making sure this moved forward. Once they got on board, this idea really picked up its pace.” Once Shane and Christy saw the Gore property, they were smitten. “There was just something about the property. It was unique,” Shane says. “We realized that if we could get school kids out there, we could change the way they see the world around them and the way they interact with the world around them.” For the Duffs, the project is a diversion from their life up north. Before they came to town, Christy spent 10 years running an organic health care spa in Troy, New York; Shane, meanwhile, continues his work as the director of market development for Alair Homes, which builds high-end houses. He also owns a consulting business and often has a couple other projects cooking. It has been that way since he was 14 years 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

old and went out on his own, getting a GED not long after and landing a job at a body shop. Sure, it’s ironic that Shane, working for a homebuilder, wants to stop growth from spreading east. But he says action is needed to keep Naples from continuing to sprawl. Hopefully, the Duffs say, their work will preserve one of the last pieces of native Florida: the same wild swamp that convinced them to make this place home. The Landkeepers had been working on securing the funding to purchase Bob Gore’s property for years when the deal finally closed in 2019. Shane says next they’ll look at buying more land, and then adding conservation corridors that could allow animals to travel between preserves. Just on the lands Bob Gore preserved, you can find a zoo’s worth of native critters, including bears, coyotes, owls, panthers, and spotted skunks. One of many community partners, the Naples Garden Club is on deck to resuscitate fruit trees and create a garden along the wooden boardwalk that runs up toward the welcome center. When those plants are installed and in bloom, they will create an organic greeting to the nooks and crannies in the nearby nature trails. In 2020, an anonymous donor contributed $400,000 to the Landkeepers, money the organization is using to rehab Gore’s home. Now, Christy is focusing her attention on developing programming for the school field trips the nature center plans to host starting this fall. Next up on the agenda is hiring an executive director and identifying neighboring lands that can also be acquired. “We really need to get as much of that land under conservation as possible,” Shane says. «

See the 1991 film City Slickers before visiting this state park, an 1876 cow camp where cowboy heritage remains alive and kicking. Perhaps the most entertaining aspect is the living history reenactment each weekend, which transports visitors to a time when a “cow hunter’s” life was spent herding cattle between Florida’s cow camps and downtime was spent on hard ground beside a campfire. Payment in Spanish gold doubloons was a decent enough incentive, say the actor cowboys, but probably few of us city slickers would last a day. Boat, canoe, fish, stargaze, or hike more than 13 miles of verdant pathways—keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer and bald eagles—or venture out on horseback through well groomed trails. VISIT FLORIDA

Hundreds of manatees call this large St. Johns River spring home, and although swimming with them isn’t permitted, it’s nearly impossible not to encounter one of these gentle sea cows: the cheeky fellas take great delight in swimming alongside humans and partaking in aquatic adventure. Snorkel through crystal-clear waters, float with an inner tube (rentals available) down Blue Spring boil’s natural lazy river, or launch a kayak for a zen-like wander through lush woodland areas surrounding the spring. Possibly as famous as the manatees are the cavern and cave diving opportunities—restricted to certified cave divers—and scuba diving, which is allowed only with a buddy. Visitors say the hidden and mysterious underwater holes lead to otherworldly places and swear it is one of the best places in Florida to scuba dive. Don’t miss a visit to the Thursby house, the well preserved nineteenth-century home of European settler Louis Thursby, who hoped to strike it rich with an orange grove and a steamship pier. The largest uninhabited piece of land between Key Largo and Big Pine Key engulfs visitors in the pristine beauty of wild, undeveloped mangrove swamps, rockland hammocks, and seagrass beds. Get wild on a Saturday night and join the local astronomy group for some memorable stargazing or strike out on your own and search for wildlife within the 1,000-acre sanctuary, which is a centuriesold migration route. Visitors can also kiteboard or paddleboard on the Atlantic, kayak through Curry Hammock’s picturesque waterways, hike through miles of nature trails, and fish for tarpon, snook, redfish, and mangrove snapper on the shoreline. A state fishing license is required but can be readily obtained online. (floridastateparks.org/parks-andtrails/curry-hammock-state-park)

VISIT FLORIDA

A picturesque drive south toward Key West will yield what is arguably one of Florida’s most famous snorkel spots—John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. Adjacent to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the country’s first undersea park, it’s considered an underwater Grand Canyon, offering a rare glimpse into colorful coral formations. The outside world is left behind when exploring delicate ecosystems via glass-bottom boat, kayak, canoe, or scuba diving here. Thick mangroves provide shelter for inexperienced snorkelers, and these quiet respites sometimes yield close encounters with curious manatees, sea turtles, and dolphins. A short hike through the park exposes an ancient artesian well hidden within mangrove swamps, while walking trails through tropical hammocks lead to picnicking, bird-watching, and fishing spots. Thirty-nine RV sites are available, all dog-friendly with electric hookups and a long list of amenities, from barbecue grills to interpretive programs and handicap accessibility. FLAMINGO AT THE EVER

96

One of the country’s most famous national parks is at Florida’s southern end, where a million and a half acres of swamps, subtropical jungles, and sawgrass marshes beckon visitors to commune with nature. Fourteen endangered species reside here, meaning you’re immersed in untamed beauty. Yet the adventures are easily and comfortably navigable with plenty of modern conveniences. Choose relaxation or adventure with hiking and biking trails, kayak and canoe rentals, exotic wildlife and bird-watching perches, and world-class fishing. Several campgrounds abound, yet the Flamingo Campground is quickly rising to visitor “favorite” status for its seemingly infinite Florida Bay views, refreshing year-round breeze, and camping options. The newest—and only “glamping” alternative on the list—is Flamingo’s safari-style Eco Tents. Slightly elevated off the ground, these fully furnished tents have electricity plus a dresser, bookshelf, queen or two full-sized beds, sheets, removable bug-protection screen, and private outdoor patio seating area. Showers, a community grill, and a marina store are nearby for all the essentials. RV camping is just next door with 65 spots, many with electrical hookups. Don’t feel landlocked, though. Boat options are abundant with single and double kayaks and canoes for rent, as well as motorized skiffs and pontoons. For another adventurous overnight option, a limited number of Flamingo Adventures Houseboats are available–complete with A/C while docked. Outfitted with two bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, galley, gas oven/range, and fully stocked kitchen, these floating homes sleep up to four adults and two kids, the ideal family getaway or romantic retreat. With its charmingly restored buildings amidst resplendent Victorian gardens, Koreshan is named for a late-1800s pioneer who established his new religion, Koreshanity, on the banks of the Estero River. Step back in time into 11 homes and buildings preserved on the National Register of Historic Places. Every Sunday, a farmer’s market engulfs the historic settlement with fresh and locally produced goods, from vegetables and honey to soap and artisan breads. Embark on natural adventures throughout the 135-acre park, including hiking and bird-watching through a pine flatwoods habitat and along bamboo trails. Kayak and canoe rentals are available to paddle through Estero River’s brackish tidal waterway out to Estero Bay. Beyond the abundant redfish, snook and mullet in its waters, the area is famed for freshwater bass fishing during hot summer months and saltwater fishing nearby. Return to childhood hide-and-seek with the park’s self-guided “Geo-seeking” adventure to unearth hidden trinkets, treasures, and information hidden by Geocachers. A special website—geocaching.com/play— provides clues. (floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-park)

CRUISE AMERICA: This national chain has several local South Florida locations from which to rent three types of RVs that range in size to accommodate three to seven people. With optional kitchen and bath/sleep rental kits available, little is needed to hit the road. (cruiseamerica.com) CITY RV RENTALS: If the rockstar tour bus always held secret appeal, then the Class A motorhome fulfills a fantasy. Sleeping from two to six people, it has a proper bedroom, fold-out living room couches, two slide-outs for additional space, A/C, a kitchen, a shower (often a tub, too), closets, and even an entertainment center. Yes, it has the worst fuel economy, but it’s less than the yacht, right? (cityrvs.com)

The ROYAL Treatment

The Chef Rachid Platter at Kareem’s Lebanese Kitchen gives diners a chance to sample nearly every appetizer on the menu. “Lebanese cuisine is light and healthy,” says co-owner Rachid Eido, who worked at various Four Seasons and Intercontinental properties and served as a personal chef to the Saudi Arabian royal family before coming to Naples. “We don’t cover up vegetables with spices or sauces, and nearly every dish is vegan.” The plate contains hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, grape leaves, falafel, fatayer spinach, kibbeh with labneh aioli, moussaka, and eggplant salad. “Our food is meant to be shared,” he says. “This sampler is perfect for first-time customers, who can experience a range of dishes so they know what to order when they come back.” (kareemskitchen.com)

EAT + DRINK OPENINGS

Bar Tulia meets Mercato Fortunately for Naples, chef Vincenzo Betulia feels we can never have enough of a good thing. In April, he branched out from 5th Avenue South and brought a second location of his popular Italian gastropub, Bar Tulia, to Mercato. “I wanted to be in North Naples from the beginning,” he says, “but couldn’t find the right location. When Mercato offered me this intimate location, I took the opportunity to expand and innovate.” Bar Tulia at Mercato has an eclectic menu focused on the cuisine of the southern Mediterranean (think Spain, Morocco, Corsica, Sicily, and Sardinia). Betulia describes it as a hybrid of his three restaurants: there’s garganelli with lamb neck sugo from Osteria Tulia, steak frites from The French, and original Bar Tulia favorites such as the bucket o’ fried chicken. A wood-burning pizza oven turns out Roman-style pies, and new cocktails such as the Tangerine Painkiller complement the food. Decor is warm and rustic, with outdoor seating for 75 diners. The executive chef at the new location is Kayla Pfeiffer, formerly in charge of the kitchen at The French.

COOK BOOK

The Furlong View Chef Vincenzo Betulia recently blessed Naples with another Bar Tulia.

“She comes from a culinary family,” says Betulia, “and she’s young and talented— she started with me at 21 and just turned 25. She has an incredible amount of energy and passion.” Betulia views his new location as a building block in his campaign to elevate the local dining scene. “Our clientele in Naples is sophisticated and well traveled, and it’s exciting to be able to expand their possibilities. The concept of Bar Tulia is to give Naples something it didn’t have.” (bartulia.com) Head to Bar Tulia at Mercato for pizza pies, new cocktails, and more.

You may not believe that life begins at 80, but don’t tell that to Eleanor Furlong. The Naples resident has just published her first cookbook, A Taste for All Seasons (Covenant Books; $39.95). “At 83, I didn’t start with the goal of writing a cookbook,” she says. “I just started reminiscing about my childhood and the role food played in it, and the book just evolved. For an Italian family, the celebration of life takes place around the kitchen table.” A Taste for All Seasons is a love letter to simple, straightforward Italian cooking. The recipes are clear and easy to follow, and they’re arranged by time of year. Furlong covers everything from sauces and stocks to appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Throughout the book, she emphasizes the importance of fresh and non-processed ingredients, which were part of her heritage. “I didn’t know that tomatoes came in a can until I was an adult,” she admits. She sees the book as an accomplishment rather than a stepping stone to fame or fortune. “For me, success is identifying what your goals are,” she says. “If I sell books, that’s fine. But my goal was to write the book, so my ambition is complete.” As a former registered nurse who specialized in mental health, she views herself primarily as a change agent: “When I was writing it, I thought in terms of healthy eating habits and health education. Food, to me, is medicine, and the right foods can help develop your body and mind.” (erodiof.com)

FARM

Family MUSHROOM

After his stepfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, Jor’El Schustrin was watching a video about the beneficial effects of lion’s mane mushrooms on the disease’s symptoms. Coincidentally, Schustrin was already growing mushrooms on a small scale; he began administering them and noticed a distinct improvement in his stepfather’s focus and memory. The hobby morphed into a business, and he founded Stropharia Mushroom Farm with his brother Sheth. While the “farm” is located in an industrial warehouse, the growing techniques are antiseptic and space-age. Cultivating them is a complex process that takes place in custom-built tents: a liquid culture is first poured into petri dishes, then colonized with grains such as rye or millet; the mushrooms are grown in substrate blocks that use hardwood oak and soy pellets to simulate a tree. It can take anywhere from two to nine months, depending on the variety. Stropharia’s mushrooms have been a sensation with local restaurants, appearing on the menus of Hyde N Chic, Sails, Hogfish Harry’s, and A Table Apart. Schustrin also sells them at local farmer’s markets such as Pine Ridge Road, St. Paul’s, and Mercato. Lion’s mane remains his favorite variety, both for its taste and medicinal qualities; in the

Brothers Sheth and Jor’El Schustrin together founded Stropharia Mushroom Farm.

kitchen, he’s fond of black poplar (pioppino) mushrooms, which are also grown in Italy. “They’re great on pasta,” he says. “They have an earthy, nutty flavor, and the stalks taste like asparagus. While all mushrooms are medicinal to a degree, people are moving away from meat. These are great substitutes.” The Schustrins are currently working with Dardanelo Coffee to produce a lion’s mane Colombian coffee and collaborating with Wanderlust Ice Cream to make a shiitake-flavored ice cream. Within five years, they hope to increase production from the current 80 to 100 pounds weekly to 500 pounds or more per week, and acquire a property to establish a dedicated facility. EAT + DRINK WINE

A Vino VAULT

Like people, wine sometimes has trouble aging gracefully. For optimum results, it needs constant temperature and humidity, as well as absence of light, sound, and vibration. Carl’s Wine Vault, which opened in February, offers practical solutions for every level of collector. “Naples is a vibrant wine community, and demand for storage outweighs supply,” says Bruce Nichols, proprietor of The Wine Store. “Even if they have fabulous cellars in their homes, most collectors are always in need of space for overflow wine.” Nichols has offered storage lockers in his facility for years and manages private cellars throughout the area. Husband-and-wife team Rachel Keller and Dana Sjostedt, owners of Carl’s, initially brought him on as a consultant to share his expertise. He explains that the customer base for the project is broad. “We’ve created a unique model for wine storage,” he says. “In addition to consumers, we cater to restaurants, distributors, and auction houses. Those bulk customers can have their purchases shipped to Carl’s and delivered as needed.”

Rachel Keller, one of the owners of Carl’s, which offers reliable wine storage.

The facility is built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and has two generators as well as a backup system using solar energy and a Tesla Powerpack. One side includes space for private collectors, with monthly prices ranging from $125 for a locker holding 24 standard cases to $325 for one that accommodates 60; on the commercial side, distributors and auction houses can rent space for upwards of 20,000 cases. Carl’s also functions as a concierge service, accepting consignments for customers and providing inventory management in addition to delivery. And who was Carl? A member of the Greatest Generation; Carl Sjostedt (Dana’s father) fought with Patton’s Third Army and won a Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Purple Heart. His determination to protect his country is matched by his son’s desire to safeguard his clients’ wine collections. (carlswinevault.com)

EAT + DRINK OFF THE VINE

Wine-Country Crawl

This summer, EXPLORE lesser-known wine regions within America’s borders

By Mark Spivak

F

or wine lovers yearning to get back on the vineyard trail this summer, there’s bad news and good news: Many European countries may not be accepting visitors, but emerging wine regions in our own country still await discovery. If you’re looking to explore beyond the usual suspects in California, Oregon, and Washington State, consider these lesser-known areas: Finger Lakes, New York State: The pioneer of the region was Dr. Konstantin Frank, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in the early 1950s and found the climate to be perfect for Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Today there are over 130 wineries in the area concentrated around Lake Ontario as well as Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, and Canandaigua Lakes. A good place to start is Dr. Frank’s winery in Hammondsport, which remains family-run. Other top destinations include the Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, known for top Rieslings, as well as Hearts and Hands, Heron Hill, Lamoreaux Landing, Glenora Wine Cellars, and Wagner Vineyards. (fingerlakeswinecountry.com)

TEXAS HILL COUNTRY WINERIES

TEXAS HILL COUNTRY WINERIES

Clockwise from above: Finger Lakes wine country; wine tasting in the Texas Hill Country; strolling Becker Vineyards; fresh pour at Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard.

Texas Hill Country: Ranked as the fifth-largest wine-producing state, Texas has attracted the attention of serious oenophiles in recent years. The Texas Hill Country AVA has nearly 100 wineries clustered around Fredericksburg. Cabernet and Tempranillo are popular, along with hybrids such as Black Spanish and Blanc du Bois. Must-see wineries include Becker Vineyards, a pioneer in the region since 1995 and the first producer to cultivate Viognier; Fall Creek Vineyard, where Susan and Ed Auler have been producing Bordeaux and Rhône-style blends since 1975; Fredericksburg Winery, where the Switzer family makes everything from white and red table wine to port and sherry; and mavericks such as Spicewood, Crowson, and Bending Branch. (texaswinetrail.com) Virginia: In the Colonial era, settlers in Virginia were required by law to plant vineyards; although it’s now optional, there are nearly 300 wineries scattered throughout 10 distinct regions and eight recognized AVAs to show for it. The largest is the 227-acre Trump Winery (the former Kluge Estate) on the Monticello Wine Trail, purchased by the former president in

The bestknown is the Biltmore Winery, located outside of Asheville on George Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre estate, with dozens of bottlings ranging from Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec to Riesling, white Rhône varieties, and sparkling wine. Pioneers include Paumanok Vineyards, known for their award-winning Chenin Blanc; Bedell Cellars, famous for their benchmark Bedell Musée, a Bordeaux-style blend; and Lenz Winery, founded in 1978 and specializing in Merlot. SAFETY

Everybody in the Pool! Swimming is the perfect activity for the hot summer months in Southwest Florida. But because water is everywhere in Naples (canals, ponds, pools, the Gulf), you’ve got to be careful, especially with little kids around. “The skill of knowing how to rescue yourself and survive

107_BALANCE_0721.indd 107

in the water is necessary and vital,” says Jilian Navidonski, manager of Naples Swim School (naplesswimschool.org), where she teaches swimming with her sister and the school’s director, Mary Navidonski. Read on for five important water-safety recommendations.

BALANCE

Everybody in the Pool! 1. Rethink swimming and age. Jilian says they teach everyone from babies to people in their 80s. “There’s no right or wrong age for swim lessons or gaining confidence in the water,” she adds. To become proficient, Mary estimates about three months of lessons a few times a week.

CONT.

2. Use the buddy system to watch your swimmers. Take turns watching your kids or group, especially in a crowded pool or in the Gulf. Even if there’s a lifeguard, Mary points out, “their eyes can’t be on everybody and every situation.” 3. Use the buddy system to swim. You shouldn’t swim or dive on your own. “If you do swim laps at home by yourself, be smart about it,” says Jilian. She suggests bringing your phone to the edge of the pool or being able to tap your smartwatch to send a text or call 911 if you start feeling out

of breath or lightheaded. 4. Take a CPR course. It’s easier than ever to learn CPR. “There’s a lot of options out there,” says Jilian. You can find courses both in person and online. Then, Jilian explains, “if something happens, you’re able to step in.” 5. Keep calm. If you or someone else gets into trouble in the water, it’s vital to

be prepared and stay levelheaded. “If somebody gets hurt, if somebody’s actively drowning, it’s about the instinct kicking in and not panicking,” Jilian says. “Know you have the skills to respond, or that you have the ability to get yourself out of that situation.”

SKIN CARE

SUNSCREEN SMARTS Sunscreen is vital for healthy skin, but how do you choose the right one? First, understand the two main types. “Chemical sunscreens use various chemicals to absorb UV light, whereas the physical or mineral ones use metal oxides like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide,” explains Dr. Keith A. Harris, a board-certified dermatologist at Harris Dermatology (harrisdermatology.com), which has locations in Fort Myers and Naples. “They both do the same thing; they just do it in different ways.” Chemical sunscreens tend to blend better, but their ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream—though Harris points out that no negative effects have yet been found. Mineral sunscreens aren’t absorbed into the blood, but often leave a white sheen on the skin. Harris says what really matters is using a sunscreen that is water-resistant, broad-spectrum (meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays), and at least SPF 30. Check if your sunscreen fits those requirements or try one of these:

1

Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50 from Colorescience comes in four shades and can be brushed onto your bare face or over makeup. Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, this mineral sunscreen includes antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to protect and hydrate your skin. (colorescience.com)

First sold in Cocoa Beach, Australian Gold offers a variety of sunscreens containing ingredients from Australia. Its Plant Based SPF 50 Lotion offers chemical sun protection while nourishing your skin with coconut oil and aloe vera. (australiangold.com)

3

Bare Republic’s Mineral SPF 50 Sport Sunscreen Spray in Vanilla Coco provides a fully mineral sunscreen in an easy-to-use spray bottle. This reef-friendly, dye-free sunscreen that’s made in the U.S. also includes hydrating grape and carrot seed oils. (gobareoutside.com)

Consider a “bubble travel” itinerary to areas practicing extra safety precautions. Recent destinations by Naya Traveler include Mexico, St. Martin, and Marrakesh, Morocco.

RECIPE

Watermelon Sorbet Staying hydrated is a must during the hot summer months, but chugging water can get old quickly. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, oranges, and zucchini offer a tastier way to keep your thirst at bay. Plus, as registered dietitian/sports nutritionist Barbara Lewin (sports-nutritionist.com) points out, they offer nutrients like potassium and fiber. At 90 percent water, watermelon helps you hydrate while providing antioxidants and vitamin C, as well as possibly benefiting muscle soreness and heart health. Whether you go for watermelon or straight water, Lewin emphasizes that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already on your way to being dehydrated. “It’s important to drink throughout the day,” she says. Watermelon can be used in salads, blended into a drink, or made into a sorbet. Here is Lewin’s tasty and refreshing watermelon sorbet recipe:

HEALTH

Bubble Travel You can take precautions to help keep yourself and others safe—or wait just a little longer to start traveling again. If you choose to travel, Naples-based infectious disease specialist Dr. Gary Bergen recommends getting vaccinated and waiting two weeks after the final dose to build up full protection. If you plan to fly on a commercial plane, you can follow these safety measures:

• Keep your mask on • Frequently wash your hands or use hand

sanitizer • Stay socially distanced as much as possible • Skip situations where you might remove your mask around other travelers, such as airport restaurants

Bergen suggests checking State Department recommendations and avoiding areas with surging case counts or virus variants. Travel services can help you meet any COVID-19 testing or other requirements for your trip. One service, Naya Traveler (nayatraveler.com), also offers special “bubble travel” itineraries to areas practicing extra safety measures, with recent destinations including Riviera Nayarit in Mexico, St. Martin in the Caribbean, and Marrakesh in Morocco.

PLAY

Sand Sensations INGREDIENTS 2 cups of chopped, seeded, cold watermelon 1 large ripe banana, chilled 1 tbsp. lime juice DIRECTIONS Blend all ingredients until smooth. Freeze in 4-ounce individual dessert cups for the adults or popsicle molds for the kids.

107_BALANCE_0721.indd 109

Next time you go to the beach, don’t just watch your kids play in the sand—join them. “Learning how to play, for many adults, is just as important as work,” explains Dianne Durante, a marriage and family therapist at Anchor Counseling in Naples. It can also help kids develop key life skills. Sand “changes, just like we change,” Durante notes. When a structure crumbles, “we can help kids learn how to handle when things don’t go the way they want them to.” Younger kids also develop hand-eye coordination as they carry, pour, and shape sand. “It’s a whole-body experience; that’s what

makes it so healthy,” Durante points out. If you need new sand toys, companies like Pufferfish (pufferfish.fun) offer durable options made from upcycled fishing nets and recycled plastic. Sand castles are a staple, but Durante recommends encouraging kids to get creative with a sand dollhouse or a racetrack. When a wave washes it away, it’ll be time to build something new. ON DISPLAY

The Everglades as Muse Adorable Monique captures mangroves, birds, and other flora and fauna of the Everglades with her vibrant palette and expressive strokes in acrylics. Born in Chicago and raised in Central America, the award-winning artist is now based in Southwest Florida. Her work has been shown in public installations in Broward and Collier counties and is on display in her Un Tributo al Educador mural in Intibucá, Honduras. Her paintings have been exhibited at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and on the cover of the Naples Charity Register. Her artist’s statement declares that she believes “in the mission and vision to preserve natural

resources, hoping that my art may speak to the audience and create consciousness towards nature.” Check out her work in “Connections in Nature: The Art of Adorable Monique” at the Naples Depot Museum through August 28. Over at the Immokalee Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch, well-known Marco Island painter Jo-Ann Sanborn, a.k.a. “The Everglades Artist,” is featured through July 17. The artist recently became fascinated with the ranch’s history and the livestock that provided

its lifeblood for a century. She pours her perspective into whimsical acrylics in “On the Hoof: Portraits & Landscapes by Jo-Ann Sanborn.” The 27 pieces in the exhibit are for sale; a portion of the proceeds benefit the Friends of Collier County Museums. FAVORITE THINGS Ellin Goetz moved to Naples in 1984 after earning a masters degree in landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts. She joined her thenboyfriend (now husband) Mike Watkins, who’d just started running his family business, The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. Goetz grew up in Staten Island, New York, went to Vassar College, and was pretty much a Northeast gal until she was bit by the love bug. Currently, she works with all sorts of bugs, flowers, and plants as the president of Goetz + Stropes Landscape Architects Inc. in Naples and interacts with residential clients, neighborhoods, and businesses. “I work creatively with wonderful people who care about their outdoor environments,” she says. “I try to enlighten them on living more lightly on the land and respecting the natural rhythms all around us.” These values are put into action through her volunteer work with The Everglades Foundation, where she’s focused on healthy bodies of water. Below, Goetz’s top spots in town to…

Cheers to girls’ night out: “I love my beach at Third Avenue North; it’s a solid group of neighbors who congregate.”

Bleu Provence

1. Enjoy a date: “Love the porch at Ridgway Bar and Grill, and Bleu Provence is great.” 2. Experience art: The Naples Botanical Garden. “I had a hand in designing it and in getting Naples curious about their environment.” 3. Be sporty: “I have ridden horses my whole life. In my summers in southern Vermont, near Woodstock, I enjoy carriage driving, a sport that takes you across country obstacles under a timing sequence.” 4. Eat with family: Kelly’s Fish House. “The beams inside are encrusted with shells and the servers have been there for 49 years. It’s fun to sit outside and feed the catfish.” 5. Have a business coffee: Tony’s Off Third 6. Get away from it all: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary 7. Get takeout: Siam Thai 8. Splurge on clothes: “J. McLaughlin is a corporate partner with The Everglades Foundation, and they have a line of merch designed to benefit it.” 9. Shop for gifts: Summerfields. “It’s owned by my good friend.” 10. Chill in the spa: “I used to love the spa at the Naples Beach Hotel, but that’s closing. So, I have to find a new place. Until then, beach walks will give me a natural pedicure.” —Christina Cush Siam Thai
