FROM THE EDITOR
Building Momentum
MEGAN DIPIERO
I wasn’t supposed to be on the roof, but I didn’t know any better. (Sort of.) When the owner of the house I’d rented near downtown Naples was having some work done last year, my curiosity required a clandestine ascent. So I scaled the ladder to take a look, much to the horror of the surprised general contractor, who feared that I’d plummet to certain death on his watch. (I thought he’d gone to lunch.) To lighten the mood, I joked that I was scouting locations for a new Beyoncé music video, “All the Shingle Ladies.” He wasn’t amused. But I got an idea. With construction booming on the Paradise Coast, why not talk to some of the most powerful women in the industry, the real Shingle Ladies? Meet Gay Thompson, whose father’s firm built the Hertz Arena in Estero (plus 18 more arenas in Florida, including the BB&T Center in Sunrise and the American Airlines Arena in Miami); Heather Henning, a fourth-generation builder whose company is pounding nails all over Naples; and Collier Building Industry Association board member Cali Clardy. Their stories begin on page 58. As the world continues to discover what we already know—that Naples is an enviable blend of boundless generosity, understated sophistication, and natural beauty—the demand for home-related resources grows. Enter the Naples Design District, a retail and dining destination that caters to those seeking upscale decor, art, fashion, and on-trend treasures. To learn more about the district, including 10 merchants not to miss, turn to page 74. Also this month, take a moment to relish the talent of eight Naples-based interior designers. Whether you’re pondering a luxurious lanai, a dynamic dining room (purple!), or an ethereal bedroom for seaside-themed slumber, we have your inspiration, beginning on page 80. While the latest home and design trends reflect Naples’ cosmopolitan vibe, there’s still an enduring respect for the vintage aesthetic of yesteryear. Nowhere is this more evident than at the flamingo pink Gondolier Inn, a downtown charmer recently renovated by new owners, including Keble Pryce, his wife, Katherine, and her mother, interior designer Kristen Williams. For more on their terrazzo-floored labor of love, see our Insider Q&A, starting on page 25. Naples is building in momentum—both literally and otherwise—and amid the excitement, we invite you to explore this issue in the laid-back way that makes our city so enticing: Toes in the sand with a gorgeous sunset on the way.

Q&A: KEBLE PRYCE
All INN Good Time
JOHN EDER/MARKER4PHOTOS.COM
Everything’s changed at vintage Florida-style gem The Gondolier Inn, but everything’s still the same as well. One difference is the smiling face behind the front desk. That would be the co-owner and operator, Jamaican-born Keble Pryce, who entered the hotel business after working in his mother’s catering company. “I got a job here in the States working as a server,” he says. “A couple of years later, I met my wife, Katherine, in Nantucket. I was the manager of The Nantucket Hotel, and she was the manager at the White Elephant hotel.” The couple began visiting Naples in 2015 and noticed The Gondolier, a louvered-window, terrazzo-floored charmer in Old Naples. Where some developers might have seen the place as a teardown, Keble and Katherine fell hard for its old-school vibe. Turn the page for our Q&A about the renovation. (gondolierinn.com) —John Eder

INSIDER Q&A: KEBLE PRYCE NI: What’s the history of The Gondolier Inn? Pryce: Henry and Leona Harer opened what was then called The Gondolier Apartments in 1958. They were from St. Louis. She promoted the business with shell art classes, and he took guests to the best fishing spots a ound town. The property was in the Harer family for six decades, and their son, Henry, who managed the hotel until he died in 2018, lived in what’s now our lobby. How did you come to acquire it? When we came to visit Katherine’s parents, we saw the place and were really excited about it. It wasn’t for sale at the time, but we would come in and talk to Henry and tell him if he ever wanted to sell, sell it to us. We used to bring him gift baskets, just so he’d remember us! When Henry passed away last year, there was a small sign out front, ‘For Sale by Owner.’ His sister sold it to us [including Katherine’s mother, designer/developer Kristen Williams, who’s restored other historic homes in downtown Naples] after we came and talked to her about our passion for hospitality and for the hotel itself. She had other offers,

but when we told her our vision—to restore it, not tear it down—that was important to her. She grew up here, too, and wanted to see it carry on. That was last year. We had our grand opening in March of 2019. How has the renovation been received? So many locals have stopped by and told us how glad they were we kept it as it is. We replaced the driveway, fi ed some drainage issues, updated the TVs, and put in Wi-Fi. My mother-in-
law is the interior designer. She did every room differently, in an eclectic and fun Florida style, classic but modern. How’s business so far? Great! We’ve been booked solid ever since we opened. This coming season we have a lot of long-term bookings. Customers who’ve been coming here for years say Henry would’ve loved what we did. That’s important to us because you can’t ignore six decades of history.

The Revs Institute, one of the most visited attractions in Naples, recently finished eighth in a national poll of 10 Best Attractions for Car Lovers. A panel of experts partnered with 10Best editors from USA Today to pick the initial 20 nominees, and readers determined the top 10. Revs presents the Miles Collier Collections of more than 100 significant automobiles built between 1896 and 1995. These vehicles, some of the rarest in the world, blazed technical trails and redefined aesthetic standards. Neapolitan car buffs will want to take several laps around the museum, which is a haven for scholars, preservationists, and passionate connoisseurs of automotive history. “I love creating peaceful spaces,” says Naples interior designer Lisa Khan. “As we create peace around us, it creates JO RI peace within us. There’s KE so much going on today that we need special places within our homes to transition from the outer world to the inner world, even if we only spend a few minutes in that sanctuary.” The Ohio native, who moved to the Paradise Coast in 1997 and started Lisa Kahn Designs three years later, says life transitions triggered her to rethink her career, which is when she added “micro sanctuaries”—which could be a space as small as the end of a couch— to her portfolio. “I was feeling kind of burned out, and I was looking for a deeper meaning to what I do. I wanted to know what made me different from other design professionals, and this was it. I was going through a divorce at the time, and my daughter, who has special needs, needed a calm, safe place to balance herself, so
I created a toolbox for her so she could retreat. This really started working for her, and I thought, ‘Why did I only create this space for her? I also need to be able to refresh myself after a long day.’” Kahn, who’s taking online courses to earn a master’s degree in transformational psychology, decided to create an online course herself—Seven Days to Sanctuary, which is available on her website—to teach others the why, how, and where of in-home harmony. Among her advice is to set your intention; include a natural element, such as a plant; and commit to a ritualistic time and task each day, such as 20 minutes of writing in a journal after work. “Everything in your life starts to shift when you follow this system,” she says. PET NEWS
POOCH PARADISE
As more and more national accolades are unleashed on Naples, it’s no surprise that the city recently was named a top destination to visit with your dog. Researchers from Reviews.
28
com crunched data from TripAdvisor, Touropia, and other sources to create the list, which ranked Naples No. 12 out of 567 cities for its overall canine hospitality (and No. 2—behind Nashville—for most dog-friendly restaurants). “The greater Naples area is proudly petfriendly, and visitors love bringing their dogs to stroll our main downtown shopping and dining districts of Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South,” says Jack Wert, executive director of the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Conven-

STYLE Undercover ROCK STARS By Katherine Lande
Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative director at Valentino, doesn’t design from an ivory tower. Instead, he finds inspiration for the house’s romantic silhouettes on the streets. For his 2019 Fall Winter Collection, Piccioli paired up with Jun Takahashi from Undercover— a brand that epitomizes Japanese cool with its punk rock graphics—effectively bringing the raw poetry of streetwear into the atelier. Focusing on love, a value Valentino holds in the highest regard, Takahashi created a dark fantasy with collages of kissing neoclassical sculpture busts and lush roses wrapped in chains that adorn accessories and garments in the line. Blooming with emotion, the simple yet complex prints speak for themselves: Every rose has its thorns but is beautiful nonetheless. Clockwise from top: Valentino Garavani Fall Winter 2019 VSling bag ($2,175); Rockstud Undercover leather crossbody camera bags ($1,875 each); Undercover ankle boots ($1,275).

This coastal-contemporary property features neutral tones balanced by pops of blue and coral. Spacious gathering areas, both inside and out, accommodate the owners’ penchant for entertaining.
A
five-minute walk in either direction from this twostory home leads to the Gulf of Mexico or Third Street South. “One of the reasons my clients selected this home was because of its great location,” says Lisa Ficarra, president of Ficarra Design Associates in Naples. Within the property, however, Ficarra notes that they wanted a respite from Third Street’s lively restaurant and shopping scene, which led her to embrace a soothing yet high-end aesthetic. “Collaboration was key in this project,” explains Morgan Scott, an associate designer with Ficarra Design Associates. “The clients wanted to bring in characteristics of Naples with the color palette and textures. They wanted the home to have an island vibe. We thought of that with each piece.” A neutral palette, offset by splashes of coral and blue, was used across all 6,169 square feet. For flooring, the design team opted for a wide-plank oak wood that varies in shade, structure, and knots. A light-taupe hue graces the walls, while coffered ceilings appear throughout the project. Drama abounds in the airy foyer, where striking glass pendants are suspended through the center of a floating “U” staircase. A dark stain on the sapele wood treads and corresponding handrail increases the wow factor. Because the couple enjoys entertaining, the design team wanted to provide them with ample seating. Instead of the typical great room layout, they selected four arm chairs—clad in a durable, elegant chenille-and-linen blend—to facilitate conversation. Forged-iron tables lend a charm of their own. Calacatta porcelain shelving, outfitted with custom lights, bookends a painting by Evelyn Patricia Terry and highlights the clients’ exquisite colored-glass collection. 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Ficarra notes that this type of transitional area is becoming a more common request among her clients. “I think, in general, people are doing sitting areas and family rooms,” she says. “Most don’t want two formal rooms. Instead they are asking for a television-viewing room that leads to the outdoors and a sitting room that opens to the dining area and flows to the outdoor spaces.” A double-sided gas fireplace, made of Calacatta porcelain, partially divides the living and dining areas. To augment the dining room’s aesthetic, crosscut oak beams were applied to the coffered ceiling. The adjacent wine room is bathed in light, and the stacked-stone wall
at the rear creates quite the bold focal point. “The wine room adds an extra area of entertainment,” Ficarra explains. “The clients did not want the dining room to be too formal. It is romantic and special.” In the kitchen, the owners can keep their vino selections chilled in a built-in wine refrigerator. Here, a beige quantize countertop with a leathered finish perfectly complements the modernity of the jet-cut marble backsplash. Dark wood pops against the mostly white space, whereas bronze frames make an industrial-chic statement when used on the low-back barstools upholstered in a taupe, pebbledleather fabric. Taupe-colored seating also appears in the laid-back family room in the form of leather recliners. The inviting sofa, covered in a soft linen, leaves no doubt that this space is meant for relaxation and designed to facilitate the clients’ love of entertaining. “The family room seats a lot of people,” says Scott. “The clients like the juxtaposition with the dining space as they can just pull some dining chairs from it to accommodate when needed.” A 14-foot-high cypress ceiling and recessed screens and shutters that appear and disappear with the push of a button are just a few examples of the numerous amenities in the fabulous outdoor living area. Here and in the summer kitchen, the designers created custom displays to showcase the clients’ 20-year-plus collection of shells

from local beaches. Just beyond, Christmas palms integrated into the pool design ramp up the shell-stone deck’s tropical ambience. The clients found the blue blown-glass sculptures at an art fair and placed them on the outside walls to break up the large expanse of white. For the powder room, the designers selected a backlit quartzite countertop and backsplash to create star power in what could have been a dull nook. The master bath is far more spacious and features a his and her shower with a quartz bench and a large rain showerhead. “The onyx porcelain tile on the shower walls is durable, similar to marble, and easy to clean,” Smith notes. “We are using it more and more.” The main-floor master bedroom exudes a tranquil vibe, complete with textured fabrics and large windows that invite the outdoors in. The bespoke linen headboard echoes the clean lines of the crisscross ceiling beams, which further define the room’s height. Custom finishes and a faux-crocodile leather desk with brass rings provide the guest room (one of three on the second floor) with all the comforts associated with a five-star hotel. The equally luxurious guest bath is covered in a delicate yet impactful gray and white leaf-print wallpaper. It also boasts a deep tub ideal for long soaks. Delighted to be living close to friends, family, and an array of wonderful restaurants, great entertainment, and fabulous shopping, the owners of this chic residence plan to enjoy it for a long time to come. «

BEST COAST Aurelie Platt, CEO of Jalan Jalan Collection, reimagined some established coastal design traditions to create a gorgeous space in this Naples home. “We wanted the design of this Naples luxury home to refle t the style of its owner: down-to-earth yet elegant and refined,” she says. “This brand-new home called for a modern coastal vibe, which is why we incorporated a spectacular stainless steel sideboard and contemporary accents. The use of organic materials, such as a natural teak-root dining table and a mother-of-pearl chandelier, provides warmth and depth. The mix-media, Americana-style painting and orange leather dining chairs were key elements to bring this room to life.” Miami (jalanmiami.com)

GREEN Machine
Consider these five strategies to improv the ECO-FRIENDLINESS of your home By Liza Grant Smith
The why: Composting reduces solid waste and
extends the life of existing landfills. t also can imbue soil with beneficial utrients. The how: The practice has come
a long way from the days when you threw everything in a big pile in the backyard. New compost innovations include everything from Alabama Sawyer’s elegant countertop wooden bins ($180, shop.goop.com) to the more industrial Envirocycle ($260, envirocycle. com). While the countertop version is perfect for compostables such as egg shells, coffee grounds, and fruit peels that can be sprinkled in your garden, the Envirocycle is an all-inclusive outdoor composting system that arrives ready to use. Simply fill wit compostables and turn the composter three full revolutions every three days. The design includes vents that increase airfl w into the drum and create optimal composting conditions.
«
NEED A LITTLE MORE HELP? Hannah and Tom Rinaldi launched Naples Compost in 2018 to educate on the value of composting. The firm offers residential scrap pickup services (a great option for those who have a HOA that doesn’t allow outdoor composting bins), and the couple also serves as a resource for anyone with questions on the ins and outs of composting. OPT FOR SUSTAINABLE FLOORING OPTIONS The why: Upping the sustainability of your flooring material means d creasing your environmental impact.
The how: While bamboo floo s have gotten a lot of
play in this category, cork floo s continue to gain momentum. No trees are cut down during the corkharvesting process. Instead, bark is stripped from Mediterranean cork oak trees and then regenerates within a few years, resulting in no damage to the tree. Manufacturers like Pompano Beach–based APC Cork (apccork.com) have come up with a variety of stylish shades, textures, and surface patterns to choose from. Visit Pro Floors & Cabinets in Naples (profloor .biz) to check out the brand.
INSTALL LOW-FLOW SHOWERHEADS The why: Ordinary showerheads are regulated to have a maximum fl w rate of 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM). Replacing just one showerhead with a WaterSense labeled model can save a family an estimated 2,900 gallons of water annually. The how: There are plenty of options that meet WaterSense specs of 2 GPM or less but still have cool bells and whistles. Take Kohler’s Purist 1.75-GPM showerhead ($184, us.kohler.com). Its three distinct sprays are all enhanced by Katalyst technology, which infuses 2 liters of air per minute to deliver a powerful spray. Kohler products can be purchased at Wool Kitchen & Bath in Naples (woolkb.com).

USE NON-VOC PAINT
The why: Most paints contain volatile organic compounds (or VOCs), hazardous chemicals that are released into the air when you paint a wall, leading to indoor air-quality problems and potentially serious health risks. The how: In response to concerns, companies have devel-
oped low-VOC and zero-VOC paints. The Real Milk Paint Co. (realmilkpaint.com) let history guide its paint development. Milk paint dates back thousands of years, when it was used on cave walls and artifacts. The company’s paint is a modern variation made from the same basic ingredients, resulting in an all-natural and completely biodegradable product. Real Milk Paint is available at Retro Home in Fort Myers (retrohomellc.com).

GET CLEANER CLEANING PRODUCTS The why: Traditional cleaning supplies can contain harmful chemicals that, despite making their way to waste water–treatment plants after going down drains, can end up in waterways. Over time, this poses a threat to water quality, fish, and other animals
The how: Give up hazardous cleaning completely with the Branch Basics Starter Kit + Oxygen Boost ($69, branchbasics. com). The key component is the company’s Concentrate, a plant- and mineral-based, multipurpose formula made without harmful preservatives or alcohol. Dilute the concentrate with water in the BPA-free plastic spray, foam, and laundry bottles that come with the set and clean everything, from tough grease to the dirty hands of a toddler. Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas scenes, clockwise from top left: Snorkel with mega manta rays; relax at the spa or observe the night sky at Sky; dine underwater at Sea; indulge in a floating breakfast spread.
ANANTARA KIHAVAH MALDIVES VILLAS This Maldives resort sets the bar for overwater excellence. From a swoon-worthy setting in Baa Atoll to over-the-top amenities and unwavering service, this is the bucket-list island experience lovers seek when dreaming of the Maldives. First, get swept away by the dramatic natural backdrop. The resort branches above and across Kihavah Huravalhi, a picture-perfect island in Baa Atoll, a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with dazzling turquoise waters and biodiverse coral reefs. Mounds of sugarloaf sands envelop the entirety of this lush island, blanketed in palm trees, screw pines, and native orchids. Sandy lanes, etched through the dense foliage, allow guests to traverse the island by bike or foot to reach on-land amenities, while wooden bridges lead to overwa-
ter extensions. Wade into the blue-ombré waters, submerge, and enter another dimension. The thriving house reef teems with Moorish idols and blue tangs—that’s Gill and Dory in Finding Nemo terms—performing their latest synchronized swimming routines. Go deeper as spotted eagle rays and green turtles lead the way; venture even farther and join the seasonal migration of mega manta rays. Next, luxuriate in Anantara Kihavah’s thatchedroof overwater pool villa. A sleek and sizeable infinity pool lies at the villa’s core, replacing a traditional living area and directly accessible from all nooks, including the high-design bedroom, the wow-factor bathroom, and the sprawling sundeck. In-villa enticements—like a queen-sized bed swing, a duo of overwater hammocks, and a sunken, glass-bottomed bathtub—lend to the ultimate in private moments. Yet there’s one moment you’ll want to make public: the Instagram-perfect floating breakfast served in the comfort of your infinity pool. This buoyant tray of lobster benedict, smoked salmon, fresh fruits and juices, pastries, and top-shelf Champagne drifting toward the Indian Ocean is the true apex of food porn. Finally, leave your love nest and discover the resort’s next-generation amenities. There’s an astronomy-themed rooftop bar, Sky, home to the Maldive’s largest telescope, plus an otherworldly underwater restaurant, Sea, with front-row seats to Baa Atoll’s prolific marine life. There’s a glorious spa, Cocoon, staffed by an Ayurvedic specialist and touted as the Maldives’ first and only luxury med spa. The island nation’s sole Muay Thai boxing ring is also found here, run by a professional boxer. At

At Anantara Kihavah, guests can dine in the sand and take in the views in their overwater pool villa (above). Niyama’s ocean pavilion suite (below) boasts a private infini y-edge pool.
160-feet long, Anantara Kihavah’s principal infinit pool is one of the Maldives’ largest. Five beautifully appointed restaurants satisfy all foodie cravings from Mediterranean fare to local catch to Japanese teppanyaki, but you can also choose to dine on a private sand bar or in your villa. All the while, island staff and a dedicated villa butler make this journey through overwater utopia a flawles and fabulous one; even the smallest requests are honored with gusto. Anantara Kihavah proves that heaven is just a long-haul flight away. (anantara.com) NIYAMA PRIVATE ISLANDS MALDIVES Most resorts in the Maldives cater to couples seeking privacy and relaxation—but not all. Case in point: Niyama Private Islands Maldives, which presents an alternative paradise, one with action-packed days, a family-friendly feel, and plenty of social happenings set in an extreme tropical dreamscape. Connected by a small bridge, Niyama’s two islands are aptly named Play and Chill. Play is ground zero for watersports. Fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, kneeboarding, wakeboarding, windsurfing, parasailing, kitesurfing, water skiing, and Jet Skiing are just a fraction of the 32 water activities on offer. Yet none garners as much attention as the surfing. Here, the surf breaks directly on the island’s southern shore, creating a world-class point for all levels. Those with more skill can also ride the waves at Kasabu and Hocus Pocus, a five- and 10-minute speedboat ride away, respectively, while admirers can watch the action from the Surf Shack bar, rum cocktail in hand. Thanks to a colossal kids’ club and kid-approved amenities aplenty in the pool and beach areas, Play also attracts the lion’s share of family travelers, who typically reside in the island’s beach bungalows.

Dressed in contemporary decor, Niyama’s two-bedroom ocean pavilion (above) is large enough for a family. An aerial view of Niyama (left) highlights its overwater accommodations.
Having said that, families with a penchant for all things overwater can choose from a private cluster of villas called the Crescent, which can accommodate groups traveling together, up to 14 adults and eight children. Meanwhile, on Chill, the Maldives’ more familiar romantic side is on full display. The water pool villas hover over the crystalline shallows, each with a partial open-air shower, private pool, day bed, and deck with stairs leading directly into the water below. Drift Spa is a stunning feat of transitional indooroutdoor architecture, where forest greens and ocean blues illuminate understated treatment sanctuaries. From Chill’s northern tip, catch the 10-minute ferry to Niyama’s floating dining and entertainment complex, underscored by modern fine dining restaurant Edge. Come sunset, DJs spin house music at
Edge; on Saturdays and Wednesdays the fun rages late with a glow party at the underwater nightclub Subsix. Upon return to your luxe lair each night, a newsletter details the endless potentials for the next day. Think early morning yoga, aqua Zumba, coconut painting, TRX suspension training, and beach soccer for the adults; dolphin spotting, sand-art classes, and kite fl ing for the kids; dining in the treetops and movies under the stars for everyone. Of course, there’s always the option to perfect the art of doing nothing and simply admire the exquisite surrounds. However, Niyama has found a niche with travel-savvy couples and families who ever questioned if boredom could strike while being marooned on a remote tropical island. The answer here: absolutely not. National Treasure Fashionable man-about-town Adam Mahr opened luxury boutique A Mano in Washington, D.C.’s charming Georgetown neighborhood in 1994. Six years later, he added a Naples location in the Third Street South historic area, bringing his well-curated selection of imported pottery, crystal, gifts, attire, and accessories to Paradise Coast shoppers. Mahr grew up in the Baltimore suburb of Greenspring Valley, Maryland; earned degrees from Rollins College in Winter Park and the Sorbonne in Paris; and now spends ample time in Naples. But for all of his travels, he’ll always have a special place in his heart for D.C., a global destination where evening aperitifs generally mean talk of style, substance, and scandal. —Caroline Ridgway

MAC ATTACK
Take a deep breath and buckle up for a WILD RIDE in McLaren’s 710-hp 720S coupe By Howard Walker Does the world really need a car capable of piercing the atmosphere at a mind-warping 212 mph? Or catapulting away from a stoplight and reaching 60 mph in 2.7 seconds? Does it need a car that stickers at $284,745? Or, in the case of the very nicely loaded version I’ve been piloting, an Amex Centurion Card– melting $353,140? Of course, it doesn’t. It also doesn’t need Nike Air Mag Back to the Future sneakers priced at $14,500 a pair or Hermès Birkin bags at $16 grand a pop—if you can even get one. But in the immortal words of blonde bombshell Ulla in the musical rendition of The Producers: “When you got it, flaunt it. When it comes to flaunting it, McLaren’s 710-horsepower 720S screamin’ meanie is in a league of its own. Just look at the thing. Those twin-hinged dihedral doors, that teardrop roofline, those air-gulping intakes so big they could swallow a small labradoodle. If you’re craving one of the most complete, focused, and thrilling driving machines capable of tingling each and every nerve ending with the press of a start button, this is it. The 720S is part of McLaren’s Super Series, and it’s a big step up in 56
terms of power, performance, and purity from the 570S in the Sports Series. This car defines cutting edge, from its full carbon-fiber body structure that’s the lightest and strongest in the industry to the world’s most advanced suspension system. Like every McLaren, the 720S is built by an offshoot of the company that constructs McLaren Formula One race cars in England, in a building that is more akin to an operating theater than a car plant. So, what’s it like to drive? In a word of three syllables: stupendous. Reach into one of those door orifices, squeeze a hidden button, and it magically opens forward and upward. The door top is cut into the roof, so sinking into the hip-hugging driver’s seat is easier than it looks. This is a race car’s cockpit. It’s simple, functional, focused, and tight— consider a week on Keto before climbing aboard. Unlike some rivals, this McLaren feels far from claustrophobic inside. The windshield is huge, as is the rear window. Our test car also came with the optional, but highly desirable, overhead Plexiglas clear panels to add light. Press the big, red Start button on the center console and prepare to grin like the Cheshire Cat at the angry snap and snarl that explodes from

the exhausts. Seismologists will register a 7 on the Richter scale. Children and small pets will run for cover. Angry neighbors will dial 911 to complain. But for lovers of fast machinery, this is José Carreras singing Verdi. When you stand on the gas and watch the tach needle zing round to the 8,100-rpm redline, the howl from that twin-turbo V-8 mounted behind your right ear is enough to elicit tears of joy. That and the sheer ferocity of the acceleration. In full-on launch mode, this Big Mac slingshots off the line in brutal, breathtaking fashion. No Disney rollercoaster comes close to quickening your pulse like this does. Nothing less than a sinewy racetrack can challenge the McLaren’s handling capabilities. This car simply goes where POWER FILE it’s pointed in the most poised and heart-pounding way. It’s PRICE: FROM $284 ,745 ENGINE: a race car, pure and simple. 4.0-LITER T WIN-TURBO V-8 Yet the wonderment of the 720S is that when you’re not in POWER: 710 HP TORQUE: 568 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 7-SPEED the mood to be an Andretti, it can be chill, too. MEET THREE WOMEN BUILDING NAPLES THROUGH FAMILY TIES IN CONSTRUCTION BY LORETTA GRANTHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA ROGERS Shot on location at Raymond Building Supply, Naples
CALI CLARDY
OPERATIONS DIRECTOR, REFINED BUILDERS & CONSTRUCTION Cali Clardy has learned to never leave home without a pair of black flats “I used to get yelled at when I’d show up without OSHA-certified shoes,” she says, referring to Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines. “If there’s an accident, you can be fined. At the very least, though, you have to wear something sensible, like flats or sneakers.” The Kansas native fi st stepped on a construction site as a kid growing up in Osawatomie, about 60 miles southwest of Kansas City, where her father sold new homes and her aunt and uncle were general contractors. After graduating from a small high school (“we only had 73 in the senior class”), she enrolled at Kansas State University intending to study environmental engineering but soon realized that home design was a better fi . Clardy moved to Naples in 2000 and began working for Lely Development, which shortly thereafter was sold to Stock Development, now a statewide builder. It was then that she met her future husband, 58
Mitch Clardy, who was a Stock project superintendent at the time. Now he and business partner Vinnie Cannamela own Refined Builders & Construction in Naples, where she works as operations director. “I really enjoy interacting with clients,” says Clardy, who oversees contracts and permits, and helps homeowners select cabinets, floo s, roofing materials, and finishing touches. Refined does renovations and builds new homes in Naples communities such as Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, Tiburón, and The Moorings. When she’s not on a job site with a nail gun—her favorite tool—Clardy stays busy keeping track of sons Triston, 16, and Ryan, 9. She’s currently on the executive board of the Collier Building Industry Association and has chaired the trade group’s annual Sand Dollar Awards Gala. Although both she and her husband know how to hang a shelf (and then some), Clardy says he’s in charge when they’re working around their house in Naples. “I make sure to hand him whatever tool he asks for,” she says. “But the good thing is, I know what he’s talking about.”

HEATHER HENNING PRESIDENT, THE HENNING GROUP
Heather Henning has scaled the corporate ladder to the top post in her family’s construction company, but she’d rather leave real ladders to someone else. “When I was in college, they were teaching me how to weld on a metal roof,” says the fourthgeneration builder, who earned an engineering degree from the University of Iowa. “I found out that I’m not only a terrible welder, but I also have an insane fear of heights.” Henning’s great-grandfather, Lars Henning, was a Danish brick mason who immigrated to North Central Iowa, where he built barns and silos. He founded Henning Construction in 1924, and his two sons expanded the company to include carpentry and home building. Within a few decades, the firm had construction projects around the world and was considered an expert in agricultural industry ventures. In the late 1990s, Henning Construction—which would eventually become The Henning Group—expanded to Florida, and Heather Henning moved south to run the company. In her role as president, the licensed general contractor oversees contracts, risk management, and administration.
058_SHINGLE-LADIES2_1019.indd 61
“I initially planned to be an international business major and had dreams of jet-setting all over the world,” says Henning, who discovered during college summers that she liked to work outside, especially when it came to operating the chute on a cement truck. (“That was a lot of fun,” she says, laughing.) She chose to live in Naples—where her company’s projects range from Discovery Village at Naples to condo renovations in Park Shore—after family vacations on the Paradise Coast. “Like everyone else, I love the weather,” says Henning, who has a 10-year-old daughter named Reese. “But I also love that Naples has a small-town feel while seeming big. You can meet people here and forge relationships.” Henning has served as vice president of the Collier Building Industry Association and was among those who received a Florida Home Builders Association Women of Distinction Award in 2010. She’s also involved in numerous philanthropic causes and civic organizations, including the Naples North Rotary Club and Greater Naples YMCA. But when it’s time to work, she puts the gala gowns aside. “For the most part,” she says, “I’m really just one of the guys.”

GAY THOMPSON PRESIDENT, CEMENT INDUSTRIES
When Gay Thompson was a little girl, her father would take her to job sites where she’d play in the sand. Once he discovered that she knew how to count, however, he put his daughter to work. “When I was about 6 or 7, he had me help process invoices by putting them in numerical order,” says Thompson, whose father, William Thompson, and a partner—along with three employees and a used concrete mixer—started Cement Industries in 1953. Since then, the Fort Myers firm has built 19 arenas, including the Hertz Arena in Estero, and the two largest arenas in Florida, the BB&T Center in Sunrise and American Airlines Arena in Miami. Thompson, however, had planned to join the diplomatic corps, not run the family business. After studying French at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she lived in Geneva, Switzerland, then returned home to Southwest Florida. “My dad said, ‘You’re the oldest, you’re a college graduate, and you get things done. Every company needs a [tough boss], and you’re it.’” One of seven children, Thompson operates the company with two siblings, Senior Vice President Brown Thompson and Carmi Terrell, a corporate secretary. “I’m fascinated by what we do because I get to see rocks and pieces of metal become complex buildings,” she says. “It’s even more amazing when I think about how it all started with a handful of people and one truck.” In addition to Naples projects that include Arthrex and Avita, an assisted living facility that’s under construction, Cement Industries also produces Spancrete hollow-core slabs, which are used between floo s in high-rises and other structures to help reduce noise. When she’s not serving on trade association boards and working with civic organizations, Thompson writes fi tion longhand—specificall , romance stories set in Great Britain’s early nineteenth-century Regency era. “I have a college student type them, and then I share them with family and friends,” she says. “My favorite tool isn’t a trowel or anything related to cement like people might think. My favorite tool is a pen.” «

here’s a change taking place in the heart of Naples. While the city has always lured residents and visitors with its promise of a laidback, luxury lifestyle, it’s also gaining attention for its potential for growth, both in terms of professional opportunities and cultural cachet. Between support from local government entities and the imagination and camaraderie exemplified by area business owners and creatives, it seems Naples is poised to start a new chapter of economic prosperity. One such destination that captures this moment in time is the Naples Design District, which blends a relaxed, coastal vibe with the kind of upscale shopping, restaurants, and real estate typically reserved for more urban settings. In 2018, like-minded community leaders and design district business owners joined together to officiall form the retail and dining destination, which spans 10 blocks between Fifth Avenue South and Seventh Avenue North, bordered by U.S. 41 and Goodlette-Frank Road. Today, the design district is fulfilling the founders’ vision of serving those in search of unusual finds and an eclectic mix of art, design, style, food, and culture. Dez Ryan Odegaard, who operates Odegaard art + design, discovered the Naples Design District shortly after moving to nearby Naples Square. Having lived in New York City for more than 30 years, she could relate to the neighborhood’s character and diversity, and her interior design background exposed her to some of the national brands now available in the design district. “I had been to Kravet in New York City, and I was delighted to discover this beautiful, little building with the level of product I was used to,” she says of the home furnishings company that operates a location in the Naples Design District. “It is just a super fabric supplier.”

“
WE WANT TO PRESERVE NAPLES CHARM, WHICH IS WHY PEOPLE COME HERE.” —David Fruscione While finding national brands like Kravet may have been the initial attraction, Odegaard is more excited by the design district’s boutiques and galleries. “I peered in the window of Method & Concept and quickly became acquainted with Chad [Jensen], the gallery owner,” she says. “I bought accessories from Republic of Decor and Garden District, so I knew David [Fruscione] and Rufin [Hernandez]. All of the business owners I have met have a creative energy and a distinct point of view; they’ve introduced a freshness into a design culture that has become homogenous.” 76
Fruscione, owner of Republic of Decor and president of the Naples Design District Association, agrees with Odegaard’s assessment of the diversity and depth of products and services offered. “We don’t want to be a one-note neighborhood,” he says. “It’s a nice mix of old and new, small and big. We want to preserve Naples charm, which is why people come here.” New development is also bringing change to the neighborhood and the promise of economic growth. Two residential projects from The Ronto Group, Eleven Eleven Central and Naples Square,
are centrally located within the design district, which is also adjacent to such landmarks as Cambier Park and Tin City to the south and Bayfront and the Gordon River to the east. “With all the residential development nearby, more foot traffic will create a neighborhood that supports our local businesses,” Fruscione says. Adds Fátima S. Khokhar, managing principal of Naples Meridian Group within Premier Sotheby’s International Realty: “Given the expansive residential development in Naples Square and Eleven Eleven Central, the design district provides a vibrant and creative outlet that equally supports and enhances the opportunity for future residential projects within this emerging micro neighborhood.” Gulfshore Playhouse, meanwhile, purchased a 3-acre tract in Naples Square, with plans to build a 56,000-square-foot complex that will include two theatrical facilities and an education wing. “Culturally speaking, with the future inclusion of the Gulfshore Playhouse, [which is] sure to become a cultural landmark, and through the public art initiatives we are working on, the Naples Design District will be an attractive area for all to walk, experience, and enjoy,” says Chad Jensen, an artist, furniture maker, and designer who is the founding director of Method & Concept. The Naples Design District’s newest project, The Collective, is scheduled to be open for the upcoming season. Covering approximately 64,000 square feet, the three-story building will feature retail shops, showrooms, and an urban café, as well as rooftop

parking for 167 cars. The vision for The Collective was to create a lifestyle concept that unifies construction, architecture, and design professionals in order to address clients’ needs in one location. “New homeowners can meet to discuss their floo plan, tangibly touch products, and see finishes in The Studio; browse the galleries or showrooms; and purchase decor for their home all at one time and in one place,” says Randy Kurtz of Kurtz Homes, one of the tenants and visionaries behind The Collective. “To add to the experience is The Collective’s outdoor courtyard and two-story restaurant.” These retail and residential additions are now easier to enjoy thanks to enhancements along
Central Avenue, such as the inclusion of bike lanes, roundabouts, and extended sidewalks. “Central Avenue is now the main pedestrian path and will eventually connect to downtown and the beaches,” Jensen notes. “This will make the district truly a walkable destination and weave us into the fabric of the community, especially as we see the area become more residential.” Central Avenue is also the endpoint of the Gordon River Greenway, a scenic trail that skirts the Gordon River. Although the Naples Design District only celebrates its fi st officia birthday this month, its future looks bright. With help from the local government and the Community Redevelopment Agency, which
MICHAEL CARONCHI
oversees and guides private and public initiatives to spur economic development, the design district hopes to achieve several goals. “Our objective is to heighten awareness with more signage, lighting, and benches that will help create a sense of place, just as Fifth Avenue and Third Street have done,” Fruscione explains. “With time, we would like to be one voice that helps to create standards and guidelines—in collaboration with the city and development community—so we can preserve the charm of Naples and the design district.”

A SPACE ABOVE EIGHT NAPLESBASED INTERIOR DESIGNERS SHARE A FAVORITE ROOM By Mary Thurman Yuhas
The clients were so pleased after Renée Gaddis, principal of Renée Gaddis Interiors, completed their Naples project, they commissioned her to design their 900-square-foot condominium in Manhattan. Offering stunning views of New York Harbor, the great room required a full renovation, including new flooring, c verings on the walls and ceiling, lighting, and furnishings. In a space full of curiosities and bohemian-style prints, the teal color—selected by the clients—acts as a unifying thread. The condo represents a deviation from Gaddis’ typical designs, but she rose to the occasion to arrive at a fun and funky end result. (reneegaddis.com)

THE DESIGNER: BETHANY O’NEIL THE ROOM: COASTAL-CHIC GREAT ROOM
Soft, soothing colors lend a casual feel to this sophisticated, coastal-style Vero Beach vacation home by Bethany O’Neil, principal and owner of Bethany O’Neil Interior Design. While the space boasts elements typical of old-world elegance—including an abundance of luxuriously upholstered furnishings, stylish draperies, and curated antiques— O’Neil minimized the formality by painting the case goods white, evoking an equally light and airy atmosphere. For whimsy, she selected informal chairs for the dining table, which later became her favorite pieces because of the balance they bring to the room’s overall richness. (bethanyoneil.com)

THE DESIGNER: DWAYNE BERGMANN THE ROOM: PLAYFULLY PURPLE DINING ROOM
82
Once a nondescript, seldom-used living room, this space took on a whole new life after Dwayne Bergmann, principal of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors, transformed this Naples home. Now, the fun and tasteful formal dining room is the fi st area guests see and a place where family and friends congregate and linger over lively conversations. To achieve the room’s relaxed yet upscale appeal, Bergmann surrounded the lacquered walnut table, set atop a curved acrylic base, with Alice in Wonderland– inspired chairs from Spain. The sleek buffet table was imported from Italy. Overhead, two posh—but not overly serious—custom lavender chandeliers complete the artistic dining space. (dwaynebergmann.com)

THE DESIGNER: KELLY KURTYKA THE ROOM: GLAM DINING ROOM
TOM GIBBONS PHOTOGRAPHY
To pull this stunning Naples dining room together, Kelly Kurtyka, lead interior designer at Interiors by Design West, used bold yet timeless elements, including black-and-white-checked marble flooring. n addition to grounding the room, the flooring also sets the tone for the transitional space. Refle tions from the trio of crystal Ralph Lauren chandeliers bounce off of the custom antique mirrored wall and lend a sense of glamour. Kurtyka created the rectangular tray ceiling— complete with dropped drywall beam detailing and crown molding—and painted the recess a much darker hue to accent its architectural qualities. The walls are clad in a woven silk covering, further augmenting the romantic ambiance that permeates this room from top to bottom. (dwest.com)

THE DESIGNERS: NAN WRIGHT AND CAITLIN HEATH THE ROOM: PARTY-READY LANAI
The clients in this 10,000-square-foot seaside residence surrounded by untouched mangroves in Naples called upon Nan Wright, owner and creative principal of Wright Interior Group, and Caitlin Heath, associate creative director, to produce a classic beach home. To create a seamless fl w between the indoor living area and the generously sized outdoor space, the designers introduced pocket sliders. Because the clients entertain alfresco frequently, Wright and Heath selected comfortable, durable, and attractive outdoor furniture. One of the many amusing features is the 9-foot-long, living-edge custom coffee table. With ottomans tucked underneath for extra seating, it can be used for informal dinner parties or cocktails and aperitifs. (wrightinterior.com)

THE DESIGNER: SARAH ANDERSON THE ROOM: COLOR-CONSCIOUS KITCHEN
What started as a small project in Naples for Sarah Anderson, principal of Designing Naples, quickly blossomed into an entire home renovation. To arrive at this bright and colorful kitchen, Anderson began by lowering the 16-foot-high ceilings to 12 feet, eliminating the space’s former silo feel and appearance. Next, she removed all of the gold tones, allowing her to work with a white palette. Replacing the dark cabinetry and dated, yellowed flooring yielded another d amatic transformation. The result: A modern, cheerful kitchen that refle ts the effervescent family that calls this charming residence home. (designingnaples.com)

THE DESIGNER: KIRA KRÜMM THE ROOM: DREAMY, NAUTICAL BEDROOM
080_DESIGNROOMS_1019.indd 85
Kira Krümm, principal designer of Koastal Design Group – Kira Krümm & Co., loves to design bedrooms, or, as she refers to them, “private sanctuaries for dreaming.” Because this master bedroom is so large and features 13-foot-high ceilings, Krümm’s challenge was to showcase the space while keeping it cozy and interesting. Inspired by the island lifestyle on Marco Island, where the home is located, she selected a soft color palette with a balance of crisp whites, linen-colored walls, and deep blues. An oversized canopy bed, offset by shiplap wainscoting on the walls and oceanic art prints, turned the imposing space into a relaxing haven. (koastaldesigngroup.com)

Karen Larson, founder and principal of Broad Avenue Studios, worked closely with the owner and architect of this Naples home to take full advantage of its waterfront setting, with the goal of creating a harmonious marriage between the alfresco living space and the dramatic seascape. The eyeline of the infinity poo extends into the water, forming the perception of one continuous natural vista—a view visible from every corner of the home. With an outdoor area designed to accommodate their young, active family, the clients appreciate that whether they are cooking in the summer kitchen, watching TV, or simply relaxing on the lanai, the open floor plan ma es it easy to keep an eye on their children. ALISON CRAIG HOME FURNISHINGS, NAPLES Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: A successful interior is not determined by the cost of its components. The Alison Craig signature look is all about achieving a high-end space at a great price. Mixing up your rooms “high and low” is a good practice because it keeps the total cost of your room lower and also ensures that you have an interesting blend of pieces, rather than having it look like it was lifted out of the pages of a specific brand’s catalog. Q: WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY? A: A new take on black and white. In tandem with the current fashion runways, the classic black and white combination makes a modern impact in home furnishings. From Park Avenue to Palm Beach, the graphic details are

delivered in high contrast via glossy black wood against white upholstery. Intermixed black and white surface treatments demonstrate the power of this timeless duo that never goes out of style. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: The design team at Alison Craig will help you create rooms that reflect your individual style, whether it be seaside tropical, classic Old World, modern chic, or relaxed and casual. With some of the best-known brands in the industry—such as Theodore & Alexander, Stanley, Hooker Furniture, and more—at their fingertips, the talented team will assist you in choosing not only the right furnishings but also the perfect accessories, art, Karastan rugs, lighting, and more.

JETT THOMPSON HOME Q: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATION? A: Travel continues to inspire me in design and in my everyday life. A recent trip to Africa gave me the opportunity to work with several local craftsmen on textiles, fine jewelry, and beadwork. The Northern Range Trust offers support to these groups in microfinance, teaching them to support themselves with their local craft. Subtle tweaks on color combinations have resulted in beautiful jewelry, belts, bags, and textiles—all while supporting local communities. Who wouldn’t be inspired by that? A little less perfect and a little more authentic. Q: WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF SPECIALIZATION? A: Residential interiors. We are a lifestyle boutique and design firm that showcases our love of the unique and organic, mixed with clean, classic pieces. Having a store allows our clients to come and browse, share their likes and dislikes and experience a variety of styles. This is the foundation of our design philosophy: carefully curated design tailored to the individual personality, wants, and needs of each client.

TASTE By Mark Spivak
Nouveau MEXICO VANESSA ROGERS
Shortly after Agave opened in 2011, a cook from Agua Caliente re-created this paella mixta from his childhood. Containing chicken, shrimp, and mussels, it differs from the Spanish version in its intense tomato broth and the substitution of mild Argentinian sausage for chorizo. Saffron, garlic, and a battery of spices are reduced along with red rice to form the flavorful broth. Each dish is cooked to order, and the ingredients must be layered and timed to perfection. “This is our homage to the Mexican paella,” says general manager Holly Stek-Sleep. “Many diners have high expectations of paella, and every cook has a different style. You can meet those expectations as long as it’s delicious.” (agavenaples.com)

TASTE IN SEASON
STONE CRABS
«
Dozens of local eateries serve the delicacy, but the best known is Truluck’s (trulucks.com). The restaurant operates its own fishing fleet in the Gulf of Mexico and promises crabs “from our traps to your table in 24 hours.” Every Monday night, Naples foodies can indulge in unlimited stone crabs for a low, set price.
«
Although it technically begins with the blessing of the fleet in Everglades City in September, Florida stone crab season runs from October 15 to May 15. Insiders will tell you that the six weeks prior to the New Year are the best time to snag the sweetest, most succulent meat. Stone crabs are found in the waters from Connecticut to Belize, but they are most closely associated with the Sunshine State. Much of that connection is due to the legendary Joe’s Stone Crab on Miami Beach, which is the largest buyer in the country. Stone crabs are the ultimate in sustainable seafood, as no crabs are killed: One claw is removed, and the crab is returned to the water to regenerate.
If you want to get up close and personal with these gems of the sea, mark your calendar for the Naples Stone Crab Festival (stonecrabfestival. com), taking place October 25-27 at locations on the waterfront including Tin City and Bayfront. Live music, arts and crafts, and 20 food booths will provide the perfect kickoff to the season
fresh produce. The other part of the equation is a personal touch: Hindes gets to know what regulars want, and their food is frequently ready even before they order. “Everyone who comes here for the fi st time falls in love with the place,” she says. “We’re fortunate here in Naples to have a clientele that understands differences in quality, and we’re able to get to know them even if they’re only here for four months.” The menu is both encyclopedic and eclectic, combining the best of Midwestern and New York deli traditions. Best sellers include the Reuben and Cuban sandwiches, as well as the grilled Italian sub stuffed with ham, capicola, salami, and provolone. With long-term employees (the two cooks have logged 10 and 20 years, respectively) feeding as many as 200 customers a day in season, working at Tropic Chill is a labor of love. One tradition that has survived more than two decades is serving guests a small portion of ice cream, sorbet, or sherbet. “That way they leave with a sweet taste to remember us by.” (tropicchill.com) Grab a deli favorite, including large club sandwiches.

MEAT ME AT TROPIC CHILL Tropic Chill Deli has been one of Naples’ most popular breakfast and lunch spots for the past 22 years. Taking over on the cusp of season might have been intimidating for some, but not for Donna Hindes. “My parents had restaurants all their lives in Chicago,” says Hindes, who came on board last December. “I was washing beer glasses behind the bar at the age of 5.” Part of Tropic Chill’s success can be attributed to its attention to detail. The deli meats are delivered daily from Thumann’s in New Jersey; Cusano’s Bakery in Coconut Creek ships in bread every day; and Oakes Farms supplies the 108 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Golden Anniversary Longevity is usually not a word associated with Florida restaurants, so it’s all the more remarkable that Alexander’s is celebrating its twentyfifth anni ersary this year. Alexander Bernard came to Naples from New England to open Margaux’s, where he served as chef and co-owner for fi e years. One day he stumbled upon an abandoned coffee shop on Tamiami Trail North and was intrigued by the lush, serene courtyard. With the encouragement of his wife, Monika, he opened in 1995 “She’s been the biggest influenc on me in moving toward healthier cui-
sine,” Bernard says of his wife, who has a background in dance and nutrition. “We now do a special health-oriented menu—two appetizers and two entrées—that changes regularly and has become extremely popular.” Another influence in his armto-table repertoire are his summer sabbaticals in Europe and California, which he takes while Alexander’s shutters from May through September. The restaurant reopened on September 26 and will serve lunch and dinner throughout the season. Once each month the chef emerges from the kitchen for his popular cooking classes

that attract a devoted clientele. While Bernard has witnessed many changes in customer preferences over the years—including a newfound hunger for ethnic cuisines—he believes keeping tabs on trends and remaining aware of his diners’ desires has
helped him stay in business for a quarter of a century. “You have to work hard and keep the restaurant fresh, but the most important thing is interacting with your guests and knowing who they are,” he says. “You can have the best food and the best service, but ultimately the customers need to know that you want them there.” (alexandersnaples.com)

RAISE A GLAS Chris Zazo isn’t the only Naples resident to own a California winery, but he might be the most unusual. A self-described blue-collar guy, he grew up on a dirt farm in Akron, Ohio, where his family mined peat bogs. After achieving success as a roofing co tractor, he decided to follow his dream and founded Hailstone Vineyards. “It’s a passion project,” he explains. “We’re not making a lot of money, but I’m doing what I love.” Hailstone’s 600-case production supplies many of the top restaurants and retail shops in Naples, along with three other markets around the country. Zazo owns no vineyards, which allows winemakers Tim Milos and Chad Alexander to carefully source specific g owers and rows of vines to produce their Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The 2013 Impact Cabernet is Zazo’s favorite, and local wine personalities seem to agree. “Hailstone’s 2013 Cabernet is in its prime right now,” says Liset Zelaya, sommelier at Sea Salt. “It’s supple, dense, dark, and rich— everything any Napa wine lover could want. It’s a pleasure to introduce it to our guests.” (hailstonevineyards.com)

NI’s guide to Kentucky’s MUSTTRY BOURBON distilleries
ANGEL’S ENVY
By Mark Spivak
PETER FRANK EDWARDS
MAKER’S MARK
Start at Angel’s Envy (above), which hosts tours every day except Tuesday. Continue on to Maker’s Mark, where visitors can embark on a one-hour tour or the longer Maker’s Immersion experience that includes a maturationstyle tasting.
Looking for a fall travel destination that combines beautiful scenery with some of the greatest spirits—and nicest people— on Earth? Those who head for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail will be in good company, as more than one million people visit the distilleries each year. The starting point is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center in downtown Louisville, where you can gather information and plan your trip. While the trail currently comprises 16 distilleries, remember that Buffalo Trace and Barton 1792 are not included, having opted out after being purchased by the Sazerac Company. In most cases, distillery tours are offered daily for a nominal fee. If you find the choices overwhelming, here are some essential stops. Angel’s Envy: Lincoln Henderson, the man responsible for Woodford Reserve, Gentleman Jack, and Jack Daniels Single Barrel, founded Angel’s Envy in 2006. Located on Louisville’s Main Street, Angel’s Envy crafts its whiskey in micro-batches and finishes it in port barrels, resulting in a rich, soothing style. Four Roses: Master distiller Brent Elliott took over when the legendary Jim Rutledge retired in 2015, but Four Roses is still as special as ever. Pay a visit to this historic distillery on the Salt River in Lawrenceburg and be sure to snag the Limited Edition Small Batch, if the opportunity presents itself. Heaven Hill: Founded in 1935 and still family-owned, Heaven Hill is headquartered in Bardstown, once the epicenter of bourbon production. Fifth-generation master distiller Craig Beam crafts spirits under brands such as Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, and Old Fitzgerald. Jim Beam: The legacy goes back to 1795, when Jacob Beam sold his first bottles of corn whiskey. Made in a sprawling facility in Clermont, Jim Beam is now one of the largest and most recognizable brands in the world. Don’t miss the Small Batch Collection: Knob Creek, Basil Hayden’s, Baker’s, and Booker’s.

Maker’s Mark: The Samuels family purchased Burk’s Distillery in Loretto in 1953 and began producing its distinctive square bottle with the red, wax-dipped seal. Today, visitors can dip their own bottles, if they so choose. The unique taste of Maker’s Mark is due to red winter wheat replacing rye in the mash bill. Wild Turkey: Lauded master distiller Jimmy Russell (aka “the Buddha of Bourbon”) has worked at Wild Turkey for 64 years and is now assisted by his son, Eddie. Standouts include Kentucky Spirit, Rare Breed, and Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel. Woodford Reserve: Kentucky’s smallest and oldest distillery is a National Historic Landmark situated on the spot where Elijah Pepper began making whiskey in 1812. Take part in the Corn to Cork tour to learn all the interesting factoids, like how triple-distilled Woodford is the only bourbon made in copper pot stills. If time or logistics prevent you from leaving the city, don’t fret: Angel’s Envy isn’t the only distillery in town. A stretch of Main Street has been transformed into Whiskey Row, which houses the Old Forester, Rabbit Hole, and Michter’s Fort Nelson distilleries, along with the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. And don’t forget to schedule a visit to the Four Roses Barrel Loft. As you might expect, there’s no shortage of bourbon bars in downtown Louisville either. For a slice of history, try the Brown Hotel lobby bar or the bar at the Seelbach Hilton, which dates to 1905. More contemporary venues include Bourbon’s Bistro (offering 130 labels) and Proof on Main in the trendy 21c Museum Hotel. «

For an in-depth exploration of the Woodford Reserve distillery (above and left), opt for the Bourbon Legacy Tour, which concludes with a tasting of the brand’s bourbon and a historic cocktail.

BALANCE NOURISH
GOURD FOR YOU Pumpkin shines on National Pumpkin Day, October 26, and, of course, Halloween. This nutrientrich fall staple packs high amounts of antioxidants, beta-carotene, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and E. Add it to baked goods, desserts, soups, salads, and more to protect eye health, regulate blood pressure, and reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, and stroke. Because it’s rich in fiber and low in calories (about 49 in a cup), eating pumpkin may aid in weight loss by augmenting satiated feelings. Celebrate the good gourd with a loaf of pumpkin spice bread from Epiphany Gluten Free Bakery in Naples. Or pick up a package of Paleo Fit Pancake Mix and follow Ephipany’s recipe for a pumpkin-infused breakfast classic. (epiphanyglutenfree.com) PALEO PUMPKIN SPICE WAFFLES OR PANCAKES 1 B⁄e cups Epiphany’s Paleo Fit Pancake Mix 4 eggs 2 tbsp. oil 2 tbsp. molasses B⁄c cup pumpkin puree 1 tbsp. vanilla extract or spiced rum 1 tsp. allspice 2 tsp. cinnamon B⁄e tsp. nutmeg Whisk eggs, oil, molasses, pumpkin puree, and extract until combined. Add Paleo mix and spices, and whisk until there are no lumps. Cook waffles or pancakes as normally preferred.

Triple Treat
Hydrate and smooth skin while also reducing lines and wrinkles? Yes, please. That’s what DermalInfusion, a three-in-one exfoliationto-serum technology, delivers according to Jennifer Alvarez Linguidi, an advanced holistic aesthetician and owner of Purely You Spa in Naples. The noninvasive treatment—now offered at the certified-organic spa—exfoliates, extracts, and infuses deep below the skin’s surface with botanical-based serum in this one-and-done approach. DermalInfusion reportedly also minimizes sun damage, reduces hyperpigmentation and inflammation, and calms rosacea and acne. Linguidi says the treatment requires no downtime and can be used on all skin types. She recommends a series of four to six treatments for optimal results. “We are thrilled to be the only place in Southwest Florida to have this advanced resurfacing technology, which is super antiaging,” Linguidi says. And we strive to educate each and every patient on the facts. Did you know that at least 80% of American adults have gum inflammation/disease? Gum disease is linked with blood vessel disease, heart attacks and strokes. Gum disease and tooth loss also increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, if an individual has diabetes and bleeding gums, the risk of a premature death increases by 400 to 700 percent. Essentially, your mouth talks to your body and your body talks to your mouth. To assess each patient’s oral health, we have an Oral DNA test available. This provides us with concrete evidence of the high-risk bacteria living in the mouth. When these tests come back with high levels of high-risk bacteria, we have an array of methods we can use to fight these bacteria and make sure that they will never come back. Here at the office of Dr Mantikas, we strive for optimal dental fitness. What’s a healthy outside without a healthy inside? The answer is simple. It’s nothing. So, YOU work on the outside and WE WILL work on the inside.

Pet ownership can come with a host of health benefits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites research that shows that bonding with a pet can help increase fitness, lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It’s also great for your mental health, with pet ownership lessening feelings of loneliness and leading to increased joy. For those interested in canine companionship (and the benefits that come with it) without the full-time commitment, the Humane Society Naples offers a daily Rescue Recess. The program allows visitors to check dogs out of the shelter for two hours or longer depending on the time and day. You can take a dog to various locations—HSN has plenty of ideas—or to your home to hang out. You’re not the only beneficiary, of course. Because the program gets dogs out of the shelter for an extended period of time, it helps the pooches eliminate extra energy and lower their stress hormones, too. “Even if it’s just taking a buddy home to watch Netflix, it’s a win-win for all involved,” says Jonathan Foerster, HSN’s director of community affairs. The program is open to anyone 16 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license and a vehicle to transport the animal safely. HSN provides a leash, collar, water, dish, Frisbee, and balls, and all dogs are outfitted with an adopt-me vest. Participants are encouraged to share images of their adventures with #RescueRecess in order to help their friend find a “furever” home. And if you fall in love with your short-term companion, you can adopt it through the humane society. (hsnaples.org/recess)

LEAVE A TRAIL For adventurers who take the road lesstraveled or folks who tend to lose stuff, the Breadcrumb mini location marker is a godsend. The small device can be used as a personal safety beacon or to keep tabs on people, places, and things, even when there’s no cell service. Controlled via a free tracking app, it connects to a smartphone through Bluetooth and can continuously plot its location on the app’s map using GPS. When within a 150-yard range, the app guides you to the device with bright LED lights and an alert sound. When not in range, its last known location is always displayed. Users can share access with others through the app so that they, too, can locate the device and remotely activate the lights and sound. Although it has many applications for outdoor enthusiasts, it also can keep track of myriad personal items, such as your luggage, keys, and parked car. (breadcrumbtech.com)
Salut! THE MAGAZINE OF THE NAPLES WINTER WINE FESTIVAL
SAW THE LIGHT Dona Parker’s story is an example of a bad situation leading to a beneficial outcom . She became ill after inhaling mold during a home remodel, and that negative experience eventually inspired the former interior designer to pursue a new career path as the owner of Tree of Light Whole Body Rejuvenation Center in Naples. After months of respiratory troubles and being frustrated with prescription medicines, Parker turned to photobiomodulation, a form of light therapy used to treat various ailments, injuries, and pain symptoms. For her whole-body LED light therapy, Parker had to commute to Florida’s east coast, spurring her to want to bring the technology closer
to home. She bought an ARRC LED light therapy chamber and says she’s the fi st to offer it in this area. At Tree of Light, she also has an infrared sauna, another therapy that had helped her to detox. According to Parker, medical research shows that these light therapies improve circulation, increase nutrient transfer to cells, reduce inflammation, and det xify cells of wastes and free radicals. She also stresses that it’s not just for those with health issues. “I call it preventive medicine,” she says. “Most clients just want to keep their bodies in optimal condition. I have a lot of athletes that come in because it’s great for quick sports recovery and performance.” (treeofli htcenter.com)

FLOWER of the Flock Since opening in 2000, East West Fine Art has become a vital voice on the Southwest Florida art scene, one dedicated to spotlighting Russian and Eastern European fine artists. From October 4-18, its gallery at Mercato will present “Color Me Happy!” an exhibition of bright abstract florals by Russian artists Irina Nogina, Natalia Litosova, and Alexander Fyedorov. As gallery co-owner Leeza Arkhangelskaya notes, flowers have long been prevalent in Russian art and decor. “We can trace elaborate floral depictions in art to pre-Christian times in Russia,” she says. “These folk floral motifs are present in wood carvings, embro dery, and paintings on wood.”
135_AGENDA_1019-2.indd 135
While Arkhangelskaya points to numerous historical references—including Khokhloma, a style of wood painting characterized by its vivid flower, berry, and leaf patterns on ornamental housewares—she adds that contemporary artists, like those in the exhibit, are eager to move beyond these traditions and the still-life imagery commonly associated with flowers “One of their biggest goals and challenges is to paint loosely, to give an impression, to convey an emotion, a mood, a fleeting moment, rather than creating a stiff, flat, photo-like, and emotionless painting,” she says. “A semi-abstract approach conveys a modern spirit of casual yet sophisticated living.” (eastwestfineart.com NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2019

DAME FROM DUBLIN Former Celtic Woman Chloë Agnew will perform at the Marco Island Center for the Arts as part of its Musical Interludes series October 24. Music is in Agnew’s DNA. She was born in Dublin to performer parents—her father is an oboist and her mother is the entertainer Adèle “Twink” King—and was only four weeks old when she appeared on television for the fi st time. Fast-forward to age 14, when Agnew became one of the original members of the Irish vocal group Celtic Woman. In this role, she toured all over the world, singing for such dignitaries as former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. After nearly a decade with the group, Agnew decided to pursue a solo career and released her debut EP, The Thing About You, in 2018. (marcoislandart.org)

FALLING SLOWLY
Music has the power to transform lives and forge deep relationships. At least, that’s the message at the core of the charming hit musical Once, onstage at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers October 5. The 2007 film f the same name introduced audiences to “Guy,” a down-on-his-luck Irish busker, and “Girl,” a Czech fl wer peddler who happens upon Guy while he’s performing on the streets of Dublin. Guy is at a turning point in his career—if you can even call it that—but Girl’s passion for his talent proves to be a huge influence on him both professionally and personally. Of course, love stories are seldom simple, and while Guy and Girl hit it off usically, they face challenges when it comes to finding harmo y as a couple. Throughout their week together, they pen hauntingly heartbreaking odes such as “Falling Slowly” and “If You Want Me,” tunes that helped the Broadway adaptation earn the Tony Award for Best Musical.
