FROM THE EDITOR

Last September, I was thrilled about Naples Illustrated’s cover story on football pro Michael Walker and his Naples upbringing. We packed that issue with stories of inspiring Neapolitans under the age of 35, but we’ve upped the ante with this 2021 version. I had a blast at this issue’s cover shoot with the five fabulous standouts from Naples, whom we carefully selected. Their energy and excitement was palpable. This year, there was more overlap between portrait time slots and more mingling behind the scenes, which made the shoot so much more vivacious. Wait until you see what these amazing young people have to offer! Their stories begin on page 66. A quick note on our cover guy, Dominic Blanco: We sent him and our other young gentleman in the feature, Philip McCabe Jr., to Élevée by Rickey in Naples to get a little extra special styling help. Both guys showed up on set with a hanging wardrobe bag full of swanky options that complemented their personalities. In person, you can tell that Dominic is literally a team player. The former MLB-er has returned to his home roost in Naples and was fist-bumping the photoshoot team. He was game for anything, including doing some American Ninja Warrior moves on the equipment at our playful location, Paradise Sports Complex in Naples. And a full-circle moment on last year’s cover guy, Michael Walker: This year, he is a background character in a feature we did on his childhood-buddy-turned-superstar-trainer, Anthony Tumbarello. Flip to page 92 to learn more about Tumbarello’s training trajectory, how he ended up being a secret weapon for Michael and several other professional athletes, and how anyone in Naples can arrange for a private session with the best of the best (although you may need some ice packs the next day). Another fascinating feature this month is on the wild panthers of Naples. On page 86, Marianne McNee reports in great detail on the good news about these incredible animals, which were on the brink of extinction. Learn more about looming concerns for panther welfare, and how they are intricately tied into problems that local livestock ranchers are facing. Next time you slow down at a panther crossing in town, you’ll be better informed. On a lighter note, we are introducing a new style writer to our mix: Robin Davis, who brings great creative flair to our Finds section (page 36), in which we highlight locally owned businesses. I hope you all had a great summer (which sometimes feels endless here on the Paradise Coast). To me, June, July, and August are a time to hang with my kids and bond with my extended family before school kicks back up. Have a sweet September.

Q&A

California Dreaming

NATALIE MESSENGER

Oliver Mikkelsen, age 28, son of Elizabeth and Paw Mikkelsen, owners of their eponymous bakery and pastry shop, grew up in Naples with his two sisters. However, he headed to California after college to learn his age-old trade—winemaking. Mikkelsen, a proud graduate of Barron Collier High School, is currently assistant winemaker and ranch manager at Villa Creek Cellars in Paso Robles (villacreek.com). Between checking on grapes and barrels, he took the time to share his insights with us on being a young winemaker.

INSIDER California Dreaming CONTINUED

NI: What made you decide to be a winemaker? Mikkelsen: My mother is from England and my father is from Denmark, so I grew up appreciating food and wine and the pairing of both. In high school, I had a friend who owned a winery in New York’s Finger Lakes region. I spent summers working there, and it came together for me. How did you end up in Paso Robles? After I graduated from UC Davis in 2015, I worked two harvests each year. I spent the winter at the Howard Park winery in western Australia, then worked at Ovid and Williams Selyem in California and O. Fournier in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region. Next, I spent three years at Epic Wines in Paso before I got the job at Villa Creek. What appealed to you about Villa Creek? Cris and JoAnn Cherry, the owners, were pioneers in the area. They opened a restaurant in Paso Robles in 1996, which became a local hangout for winemakers. Cris tried his hand at making a house wine for the restaurant, which became the Villa Creek Avenger; they purchased the property in

2003. They have a deep commitment to sustainability and biodynamic farming. What’s special about Paso? I love Napa and Sonoma, but those areas are practically monocultures; all you see is grapevines. There are cattle ranchers here, along with people growing barley and other agricultural crops. They call Paso “the last cowboy town.” It’s close to the ocean and I can fish, hunt, and hike. In addition to being more diverse and interesting, there’s more opportunity here to start a career. Describe a typical day. During the summer months, I spent most of my time doing vineyard work: tilling, mowing, and crop thinning. Since we farm biodynamically, we have sheep that we use as grazers—most of my morning is spent tending to them and moving them around

ANDRES HERRERA

There’s a new girl in town The stylish fashion and jewelry brand Kendra Scott opened a store in the Waterside Shops in April 2021. Loyal customers were eager to shop in person rather than online, while shoppers unfamiliar with the brand were interested to see what it was about. Sarah-Butler McKinney, marketing and philanthropic manager of Kendra Scott, says, “The great thing about Kendra Scott is we have products that appeal to 15-year-olds and 80-year-olds, so there is something for everyone.” Naples is an ideal location for this store because of the brand’s philanthropic focus. “Naples has a heart for philanthropy,” McKinney says. “Making ourselves an integral part of the community through philanthropy and retail is exciting, as is finding a customer base that feels as passionate about giving back as we do.” One unique aspect of this location is that all staffers are local. Keep your eyes out for a men’s line called Scott Bros, which launched in June 2021. (kendrascott.com) —Alexis Carson

to different parts of the estate. In the winter, when the vines are dormant, we’re monitoring different wine lots and blending the wines ready to be bottled. What’s your total case production? It’s small, about 3,000 cases between Villa Creek and Maha Estate. The two brands are marketed separately. Maha is the luxury line, retailing around $150 per bottle. Both labels are mostly blends of Rhône grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, which thrive in Paso Robles; for Villa Creek, we also bottle a Fiano, an Italian white wine. What does the future hold? I’d like to launch my own wine brand someday, but I’m sure I’d have to hold onto a full-time job in the beginning, so I plan to stay at Villa Creek. Land is extremely expensive now in California, though, so it’s not a good place to start out. Who knows— someday, I might even end up back in the Finger Lakes. —Mark Spivak

Joaquin Acuna has been playing soccer since he was five years old in Argentina, where he practiced in his backyard with his family. Now, this Golden Gate High School graduate is off to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville to play Division 1 college soccer. “My dedication grew once my dad told me I had something special,” Acuna says. Other family members also shaped Acuna into the player he is today and continue to fuel his drive to improve with healthy competition. “My brother and my cousins push me to play and dedicate myself more,” Acuna says. Putting in countless hours per week training, practicing, and conditioning, Acuna received interest from multiple colleges but chose to stay in-state. “UNF is for me,” Acuna says. “They embody the way I play soccer and I love the family sense they have.” After meeting his high school goals, Acuna hopes to stand out at UNF and advance the team’s trajectory. —Maddie Laufer

Cast a PASTEL Spell A Kalea Bay home looks pretty in pink (and other soft hues) with cozy textured accents By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Troy Campbell

045_ABODE2_0921.indd 45

When designers take a look at a property as a potential client project, their creative brains process every dimension in a way that’s completely different from your average home buyer. Consider Renee Gaddis—as she looked at the spectacular Gulf of Mexico from the sixteenth-floor windows of a once-plain North Naples home, she knew she could make something special out of the space. “We have done a lot of projects in Kalea Bay,” says Gaddis, the principal designer at Naples-based Renee Gaddis Interiors. “I wanted to do something fresh and different here—something colorful and more eclectic. The structure has traditional flair and coastal style. That’s why it feels so homey.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

Handcrafted, kiln-dried blue Zellige tile on the backsplash ties together the kitchen’s soothing hues and fun features, like animal-print barstools.

Instead of a bold smattering of Crayola colors, the 3,290-squarefoot, four-bedroom home’s palette riffs off the living room’s soft and inviting hand-knotted, silk-accented wool rug. “I loved the rug as soon as I saw it,” Gaddis says. “It reminded me of spring, and all of the Easter egg colors made me very happy. Its unique pastels—a petal pink, smoky blue, and a very light, almost aloeplant green—were my inspiration.” In the living room, the chaise lounge sofa has a mocha-stained wood frame with a pretty texture, adding tactile appeal. Clad in neutral-patterned chenille, the piece plays nicely alongside the light-green velvety swivel chairs. “We don’t use a lot of velvet because so many people think velvet is a warm fabric, but I think it is luxurious and like to use it,” the designer says. “Most of the fabrics we use are performance fabrics because most of our homes here are second homes and our clients want a turnkey, worry-free lifestyle.” Pink and white ottomans, which stand at the ready to relieve tired feet, also provide additional comfy seating. Woven rope detailing on the side table and lamp bases contribute to the space’s coastal attitude without taking away from the stylish, fun coffee table. At the far end of the living room, a trend-setting, custom built-in brass and wood dry bar is great for entertaining. 46 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Oversized layered glass pendants in the kitchen—sporting white glass on the inside and clear glass on the outside—collaborate with a dropped ceiling to delineate the very open area. For continuity, island end caps are made of the same type of wood as the rift oak flooring with a tung oil finish. On the backsplash, handcrafted, kiln-dried blue Zellige tile imparts an undulating, glossy surface with variations of color. At the counter, pull up a brass barstool featuring a blue and white animal print on the cushions. Adding some nautical whimsy to the casual dining space is a rope chandelier, while the variety of seating options reinforces the relaxed feel. “This eating area can be a nice little table for two, or the table can be turned to seat more people if they are doing some home entertaining,” Gaddis notes. To create a moment in the powder bath, Gaddis created custom oak paneling for the vanity wall, highlighted by a sky-blue silk cloth wall covering. A black built-in vanity and brass lights further glamorize the space. As an ode to Old Florida, Gaddis designed the wood headboard wall in the master bedroom to create a fresh take on the bamboo walls that were so prevalent in Florida in the 1970s. “I designed it and they used big panels of oak veneer. We did a big border for fun,” the designer says, taking stock of the room. “Barrel chairs covered in white boucle sheepskin are perfect for decompressing, reading, or kicking back and watching TV.” In the first of three en suite guest bedrooms, applying molding to the walls and painting it a soft petal pink created an inviting space. An acrylic and

brass frame next to the teal green velvet headboards contributes to a romantic aura. Also delightful: the burled oak dresser beside the teal green velvet slipper chair and a giclée by Lisa Golightly. “People want to spoil friends and family that come down to visit,” Gaddis says. “A lot of our clients choose to have luxury in the guest bedrooms so their guests feel like they are truly on vacation.” Guest bedroom number two is so large and gracious that two queen beds were used. To create a spot for each bed, Gaddis applied nickel gap tongue and groove in a playful pattern and centered a woven rattan pendant over each bed. Brush-stroked wallpaper in the adjoining bathroom matches the guest room’s window panels and pillows. From the black-limbed chandelier to the single pullout sleeper chairs, the third guest bedroom is ideal for children and teens. This fun hangout even has custom built-in bunk beds and easy leather poufs. Outside, a framed living wall comprised of green vines brings nature’s art to the very comfortable terrace. For a seamless indoor/ outdoor look, the designer used wood floor tiles that match the tones of the wood flooring inside the home. Through this project, Gaddis has maximized cohesion and flow, creating an elevated and stylish design scheme that’s pleasing to the senses. “It is very different, and I love it,” the designer says. «

ESCAPE WANDERLUST

Rhino WARRIORS

The rhinoceros is facing a global extinction crisis due to poaching and habitat loss. But two conservation-focused programs are working to reverse the species’ tragic trajectory through mindful encounters with some of the world’s remaining rhinos.

PATRICK BENTLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

MEGHAULI SERAI, A TAJ SAFARI, NEPAL Think of Nepal, and images of Mount Everest and Buddhist relics likely come to mind. Far less known is the equally impressive ecological splendor—and extraordinary conservation efforts—of this small country in the Himalayas. Near Nepal’s southern border with India, Chitwan National Park stands proud as a refuge for Asia’s greater one-horned rhinoceros, one of three extant rhinoceros species found on the continent. With little promise remaining for Indonesia’s Sumatran rhino (population: fewer than 80) and Javan rhino (population: about 60), the greater one-horned rhinoceros is arguably Asia’s final NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

chance to prevent rhinos from disappearing entirely from the continent. Historically, this species’ habitat covered the entire northern part of the Indian subcontinent. After skirting extinction at the turn of the twentieth century due to hunting and human–wildlife conflicts, fledgling laws helped protect the remaining 200 individuals. Numbers hovered at dangerously low levels until more serious conservation action in the early 1970s, including the declaration of prime rhino real estate at Nepal’s first national park, Chitwan National Park, with an elaborate network of guard posts to protect wildlife. The park’s boundaries were expanded in 1977 and these jungle-filled lowlands were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Staunch protection and iron-fisted management by wildlife authorities in Nepal 54

and neighboring India achieved the impossible: By 2017, over 3,500 one-horned rhinos roamed grasslands around the Nepal-India border, with more than 600 in Chitwan. Safeguarding the rhino and its habitat of waving elephant grass and soaring Sal trees came with a bonus: Chitwan blossomed into a sanctuary for other beauties of the animal kingdom, from Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, langurs, and gharials to some 540 species of birds, including the highly photogenic peacock and the critically endangered Bengal florican. This trailblazing park also caught the attention of esteemed Taj Safaris (tajhotels.com/taj-safaris), which had pioneered a luxury tiger safari circuit in India. The brand felt the time was right to expose its clientele to the rare experience of trekking the elusive one-horned rhino—and its Jungle Book companions—in the forested lowlands of southern Nepal. In 2016 they debuted the 30-room Meghauli Serai, A Taj Safari, comprising a 13-unit safari lodge, 16 stand-alone villas, and a Rapti Mahal suite along the banks of the Rapti River. Balancing nature, luxury, and sense of place, the understated but impressive Meghauli Serai sets the scene for a memorable safari. Guest rooms overlook the grasslands, while a sleek infinity pool perches above the river. Local and national influences abound in the design and decor, from walls hand-painted with depictions of daily life in local Tharu villages to bathrooms adorned

with traditional Nepalese stone spouts and a chandelier of 10,000 Nepalese hand-painted beads illuminating the entrance lobby. From the eco-minded lodge, set out on twice-daily excursions with trained naturalists in search of the greater one-horned rhino in every way imaginable: by Jeep, canoe, or boat, or on foot or elephant-back. No matter the method, meet park authorities along the way and witness how Chitwan’s patrolling system has garnered such success. Trekkers can also look forward to quickly discovering the star attraction of the national park— whereas fleeting encounters are the norm when it comes to rhinos in other places, extended rhino spotting is hardly uncommon in Chitwan, as a healthy population translates to frequent sightings. Between the majestic rhinos and other charismatic fauna, this stunning tract of Nepal offers a rare glimpse into how the wilds of Asia once thrived—and still can. Thanks to Meghauli Serai, luxury travelers can now

053_NI_ESCAPE_0921.indd 55

partake in the fruits of a century-plus of rhino conservation—and do it in style. &BEYOND, SOUTH AFRICA From a combined population of hundreds of thousands prior to the 1900s and a range that spanned nearly the entirety of Africa, the presence of black rhinos and white rhinos has since dwindled to fewer than 25,000 individuals over

a habitat confined to select parklands and reserves within southern Africa. As the blackmarket price of rhino horn continues to rise, poaching rages, in turn fueling a race against time to save the continent’s final rhino populations. A standout in this often soulcrushing marathon has been conservation-led travel company &Beyond (andbeyond.com). Conceived in 1991 with &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, the company revitalized miles of overgrazed farmland in KwaZulu-Natal and reintroduced the region’s original biodiversity while investing in local communities in the form of schools and clinics. The first endangered species to make a return at Phinda was the white rhino, a species that is the cornerstone of &Beyond’s conservation efforts. Fast-forward to present day: The population at Phinda is considered to be one of South Africa’s most important white rhino reserves— so much so that nearly 100 individuals have been translocated from the Phinda reserve to other game reserves and protected areas in South Africa and Botswana in hopes of similar NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

Reaching a milestone 30 years in 2021, &Beyond—and its fans—have much to celebrate. success. Moreover, Phinda has endeavored to become a stronghold for the critically endangered black rhino; since partnering with the World Wildlife Fund on the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project in 2004, 30 black rhino calves have been conceived on the reserve. Nowadays, travelers can experience Phinda’s surfeit of rhinos—alongside an epic population of big cats—during a stay at any of the reserve’s six design-driven safari lodges. Encounter black and/or white rhinos on 4x4 road journeys; half-day, ranger-led walking safaris; or as part of a rhino research program, shadowing veterinarians and researchers to dart and notch the rhinos and collect pertinent data for species longevity. A Palm Beach LANDMARK is transformed into a design icon for a new generation By Daphne Nikolopoulos

The fourstory White Elephant Palm Beach features a neutral design palette accented by 120 original pieces of pop and modern art.

58

Since opening its doors in late 2020, the White Elephant Palm Beach has become a modern classic. It’s not because of its hip vibe or design-forward aesthetic, but rather because it honors a significant part of Palm Beach heritage even as it reimagines it for a new era. Before it was acquired by New England Development, the 1924-built property—originally a landmarked hotel servicing Colonel E.R. Bradley’s gambling casino—was an aging architectural gem. NED chairman (and part-time Palm Beacher) Stephen Karp saw potential in its terraces, arcades, and outdoor staircases and immediately envisioned the sister hotel to NED’s White Elephant Nantucket. Elkus Manfredi Architects, specialists in restoring historic properties, transformed the original Mediterranean Revival structure into a 32-key boutique

hotel with a residential feeling, down to the thoughtfully curated art. Though the architecture is classic, it feels anything but dated thanks to a host of contemporary counterpoints. Elevated materials like metals, Carrara marble, and hardwood floors are interpreted with a fresh eye. Furnishings are sleek and modern. The highlight is the art collection, consisting of 120 original pieces of pop and modern art. The most monumental, a 7-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe artist Fredrick Prescott, greets guests outside the main entry. In the lobby, a 54-inch round acrylic painting by Orit Fuchs commands attention and draws the eye to the rest of the collection, which includes works by Japanese-American painter Kenzo Okada, New York artist Donald Baechler, legendary painter Robert Rauschenberg, and others. Of note are the powder room sketches by Doodle Boy, a 10-year-old British artist who created the drawings with marker, incorporating a hidden elephant in each.

With views of Bradley Park, the Park Suite consists of a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan living space, and a 1,200-square-foot rooftop terrace ideal for alfresco dining.

The four-story hotel is arranged around a courtyard that houses the swimming pool and outdoor seating for the signature restaurant, LoLa 41. This is the heart of the property, and it buzzes with energy, especially at night when the dim lights create a magical atmosphere. Though the hotel is steps away from Royal Poinciana Way—the town’s original Main Street—the courtyard feels secluded thanks to clever landscaping and an eye-popping design that turns the focus inward. Rooms and suites range in size from 510 to 3,000 square feet and are so tastefully appointed that you feel more like a guest in a private home. The most special spaces are the two penthouse suites, scaled for gracious entertaining or multigenerational gatherings. The terraces alone measure up to 1,200 square feet. From that aerie, the view encompasses the lush expanses of

058_QUICKTRIPS_0921.indd 59

Bradley Park and Palm Beach’s famous terra-cotta-tiled rooftops. In all of Palm Beach, there’s not a better venue than the Park Suite terrace for a private dinner under the stars. When it’s time to step out, the White Elephant offers complimentary use of bicycles or chauffeured rides in BMW 7-Series sedans. Either is a good way to explore the recently reinvigorated Royal Poinciana Way and its charming businesses. Where to go? Shop the eclectic high-fashion boutiques of Royal Poinciana Plaza, cycle or walk along the Lake Trail, stop for a Butterscotch Bomb ice cream cone at Sprinkles, pick up a novel to read by the pool at Palm Beach Book Store, and duck into the new Via Flagler by The Break-

ers (don’t miss the mini doughnuts at Main Street café). Like the White Elephant, the evolution of the old Main Street is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity—and the right way to experience today’s Palm Beach. (whiteelephantpalmbeach.com) «

ESCAPE TRAVEL JOURNAL

Exploring IN STYLE Callhan Soldavini has deep roots in Naples—she went to Lake Park Elementary, Gulfview Middle School, and Naples High School—and is now married to Neapolitan James Matthew Soldavini, whom she started dating right before college. A graduate of Stetson University, Stetson University College of Law, and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Soldavini works tirelessly as a human rights lawyer as a staff attorney at Legal Aid Service of Collier County. She also serves on the board of directors for Naples Pride and Pads 4 Refugees, Inc. In college, the Lake Park resident and avid traveler spent time in Europe and China and has had many global adventures with her spouse. “My travel regularly takes me to cultures and places that intensely contradict Naples,” she shares. “Most often, they are not nearly as clean, or beautiful, or safe. But they represent reality, and reality is easily forgotten in our beautiful bubble of paradise. I love to be reminded just how fortunate I am to call Naples home and, sometimes, bring back a lesson or meal from another culture to incorporate into my daily life here.” Below, Soldavini’s travel musings plus what’s next on the itinerary—this time with their new baby in tow. —Christina Cush

Where do you hope your baby’s first trip will be? Provence, the Highlands in Scotland, Iceland, or the Cotswolds. Where have you been that you hope to visit again? The Amalfi Coast of Italy overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea with fumes of lemons and flowers, cheese, and gelato, and lots of wine. We married in Ravello, Italy, in May 2018. Our rehearsal pool day and reception were at Villa Cimbrone, 20 acres that were once a private residence, now converted to a five-star hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Clockwise from top: Visiting ancient places; Hôtel La Comtesse in Paris; Hotel Escalante in Naples; Turkish coffee; Paying respect in a house of worship.

Is there a city you prefer? Paris, forever and always! Our favorite is Hôtel La Comtesse. Every room has a balcony overlooking the Eiffel Tower, it’s walking distance to many monuments and our favorite cafés, and serves the best breakfast. Describe your best meal on a trip. A bowl of noodles from a woman running a food stall on a long-tail boat during a canal tour of Bangkok, Thailand. List your favorite hotels. For tranquility, there’s the Arctic Treehouse in Rovaniemi, Finland, where you can watch the Northern Lights with a glass of wine in bed through floor-to-ceiling windows. The Peninsula in Chicago never disappoints, from the

food to the spa, bar, lobby, views, and five-star services. We recently tried the Only One Suite Collection in Mérida, a single suite located atop its famous perfumery with a private rooftop pool, and were floored by the attention to detail, interior design, immaculate cleanliness, and thoughtful functionality. Can you pick a top cultural experience? No one does gardens better than France: The Palace of Versailles and Giverny Gardens. Best spa on a trip? Chablé Yucatán, in the jungles outside Mérida, has a spa that overlooks a private cenote and incorporates traditional Western spa experiences and Mayan rituals. Where do you shop till you drop? For home goods, clothing, and accessories, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey, and the Medina of Marrakesh in Morocco. For highend shopping, the shops of Capri, Italy. Can’t travel without? My Away luggage set is durable and lightweight. I always bring a stylish hat and travelsize Revision Intellishade tinted moisturizer. I plan my outfits in advance, depending on where I’m going and the activities. My favorite shoes, Cole Haan Zerogrand sneakers, are extremely lightweight. I have them in white, black, and tan.

BONDED Goods

Aston Martin’s first SUV, the dynamic DBX, puts the sport in sport utility By Howard Walker There’ll come a time when Bond, James Bond, will hand back the Walther PPK, the MI6-issued Omega Seamaster, and the license to kill. He’ll get hitched, settle down, and no doubt have a couple of rug rats with Miss Moneypenny. The current 007, Daniel Craig, is 53, for goodness’ sake. Arthritis and AARP are just around the corner. Of course, with matrimonial bliss will come spatial needs. It’s no good rushing around in a classic ’60s two-seater—even one with machine guns and ejector seats—when there are baby seats to fit and IKEA flat packs to lug home. Taking it as a given that Bond will always drive an Aston Martin, the company has thankfully seen his dilemma and come up with the perfect new Bondmobile: the 2021 DBX (an SUV, no less). But this is not your typical sport-ute. Here is 62

arguably the sportiest, most agile, most dynamic loadhauling 4x4 out there—one sure to leave even 007 both shaken and stirred. It’s also arguably the most gorgeous SUV money, or even Moneypenny, can buy. With that trademark front grille, practically a carbon copy of the one on Bond’s much-loved 1964 DB5, it’s unmistakably an Aston. I love the swept-back windshield and swoopy roofline. I love that curvy, bulging hood which, I reckon, used Daniel Craig’s sixpack abs, showcased in Casino Royale, for design inspiration. Plus, it’s comforting to know that much of the DBX’s key technology comes courtesy of Mercedes-Benz. (Heck, even Aston’s new CEO, Tobias Moers, was formerly boss of Mercedes-AMG.) Pop that curvy hood

to see the fruits of the Aston-Mercedes partnership: Powering this new DBX is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that does duty in a bevy of Benzes, along with the Aston DB11 and Vantage. It’s been massaged by Aston to better suit SUV duty, cranking out an impressive 542-horsepower and muscley 516 poundfeet of torque. Mated to a Mercedes-sourced nine-speed automatic and rear-wheel-biased all-wheel drive, the DBX can scoot from standstill to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. But instead of borrowing a 4x4 platform from Mercedes, the company developed an all-new one for the DBX—an I-beam-stiff concoction of glued and riveted aluminum.

And it drives like a dream. Naturally, it’s quick—dial up sport mode and it will barrel away from a stoplight like a rock out of a catapult—but it’s not the hard-edged, blunt instrument it could have been. The snap, crackle, and pop exhaust is there, but it’s subdued, less vocal. In place of hard-riding sports suspension, the DBX features threechamber air springs for a smoother, silkier ride. They can even do double-duty, raising the body to wade through waist-deep water. Still, what will stagger you is the sheer agility when you start powering the DBX through curves. With an electronic antiroll system quelling just about any body roll, and the kind of precise, well weighted steering that feels hard-wired to your brain, it’s an SUV that thinks it’s a nimble sportscar. Inside, the Aston’s cabin is a joyous place to experience all this action. Most surfaces are slathered in buttery-soft Bridge of Weir leather with gorgeous double stitching. Pardo goes BIG

The Italian builder best known for sleek and slender day boats adds a stunning new FLAGSHIP CRUISER to its lineup By Howard Walker For our French lesson of the day, consider the phrase “en plein air.” Translated, it means “out of doors.” But it was also a term used to describe the practice adopted by Impressionist artists of painting from start to finish outside. Of course, there are always those who take en plein air to the extreme—like nineteenthcentury British painter Stanhope Forbes, who was reportedly photographed painting during a gale, his easel tethered down by ropes. Strange, then, that Italian boat builder Pardo Yachts should use a French phrase to describe the feeling you get stepping aboard their stunning new flagship cruiser, the Pardo Endurance 60; all’aria aperta sounds just as good. Either way, both phrases describe the way this sleek, ax-bowed 60-footer can transform its main salon into a magical open-air solarium at the mere touch of a few buttons.

Press one to power down the huge, darktinted salon side windows. Press two to open the full-width concertina-style doors to the aft deck. Press three to power down the vast side sections of the hull to almost double the width of the rear teak-decked cockpit. With everything open, it creates the coolest beach club this side of Saint-Tropez. En plein air, indeed. Founded in 1973, Cantiere del Pardo—based in the town of Forlì near Italy’s Adriatic coast— has been building a lineup of Grand Soleil performance sailboats. They’ve built more than 4,500 to date. But it was in 2017 that the yard really got into its stride with a switch to turning out walk-around, center-console, go-fast day boats. The Pardo 43 was followed by the Pardo 50 in 2018 and the Pardo 38 last year. But it seems existing Pardo owners wanted something bigger to spend more time aboard

with friends and families. The result is the spectacular Endurance 60, which makes its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival this month. The hull is from the drawing board of Swiss naval architect Davide Leone with an interior by Milan-based Nauta Design. As with Pardo’s day boats, the 60 sticks with that trademark reverse bow, the pop-out anchor cradle, and high bulwarks capped with teak. Add to that a pair of huge hull windows on each side and that distinctive big-windowed cabin with fullwidth, angled-back forward window and curvy roof design. On top of it all, there’s a spacious, low-profile flybridge with loungers galore. Just gazing at the deck, it feels like every inch has been maximized to provide the most usable space—from big foredeck sun pads to massive side decks to the vast cockpit with room for a table for six. As for those fold-down

Inside, the salon layout is equally bright, breezy, and open. Placing the galley right by the cockpit with all those opening windows makes entertaining (and keeping the frosty rosé flowing) a literal breeze. Forward in the salon is a big comfy sofa and high-low table, along with the indoor helm to starboard.

Below deck there are three en suite staterooms with a full-width master midship, a forward VIP that can be a double or V-berth, and a third cabin with two singles. They’ve even managed to squeeze in generous crew quarters. Part of this spaciousness is down to equipping the 60 with twin Volvo IPS drives way back at the stern. Take your pick from 550-horsepower IPS 700s or 625-horsepower IPS 800s, but according to Pardo, the 800s

should give a top speed of 25 knots and an easy 20-knot cruising speed. Throttle back to 10 knots and it should average 10.5 gallons an hour with a range of around 700 miles. Zach Germain, of Naples-based Pardo distributor Germain Yachts (that’s Naples, Florida, not the Italian one), says the first Endurance 60s in the United States should arrive before the end of the year, with a nicely loaded version priced around $2.5 million. There’s another French phrase, in addition to en plein air, that I think perfectly describes this exquisite new Pardo—magnifique! «

DOMINIC BLANCO “I was born with a baseball bat in my hands,” says Naplesborn Dominic Blanco, who signed with the Seattle Mariners at 18. After three years in Seattle, he played for two more for the Minnesota Twins. He attributes his professional success to his parents, who left Cuba and landed in Naples just before Blanco’s older brother was born. When Blanco was three, his grandfather made him a batter box with a ball dangling from the ceiling on a string, and he would swing for hours. He made the varsity baseball team as a freshman at Gulf Coast High School and got drafted a week after graduation. “I will never forget that feeling,” he says. “I got that day tattooed on my arm.” The next day, he flew to Arizona for training. Now, at 25, his professional baseball career is in the rearview mirror, but not far behind. He’s back in Naples, now at the helm of his own sports agency and a 501(c)(3) charity. Blanco started his own nonprofit foundation in 2019 to inspire kids through art, music, and sports. Blanco taps his entrepreneurial side with the same gusto and dedication he put into baseball. Even as a Little Leaguer with Golden Gate National, Blanco paid attention to his team’s skill. He was always at least two or three years younger than his teammates. “Playing with older, stronger, and faster kids made me a better ball player,” he says. “It forced me to compete.” It is also one of the reasons he feels strongly about community service. Throughout his professional years, Blanco called his agent about local charities that worked with youth sports. “It is important to give back,” says 66

Blanco, who sent his own bats and gloves to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and sports camps in Naples. Blanco also lived in Los Angeles for three years, where he launched the sports agency and his foundation, and extended his professional network. “I still wanted to be involved in the game,” he says. “Sharing my experiences and connections with other athletes at the start of their professional career was the right move.” Home was calling and he came back to the Gulf Coast. “I moved back to gather myself, dig deep, and think of how I want to impact this earth,” he says. Shortly after his return, Blanco recruited Rick and Amy Lademann, strength coaches at Beyond Motion in Naples, who’ve trained some of the world’s top athletes, to host a week-long conditioning camp for professional baseball players at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort. Blanco is also working on putting on his second charity golf tournament and fishing tournament next summer to raise funds for local youth sports. Last fall, his organization donated more than 200 units of school supplies to Avalon Elementary School in Naples. With a real estate license under his belt, Blanco is also working on his general contractor’s license. “Real estate is my favorite investment; that’s something I’ll do my whole life,” he says. To unwind, he fishes near Cape Romano. He loves that everything in Naples is 20 minutes away. “I can go from wearing boots and riding a horse in the Estates to driving west and watching the sunset on the beach.” —Yelena Alpert

JEANNETTE DERA-SERAPHIN

IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO ALLOW MY STUDENTS TO KNOW THAT IF THEY’RE HERE, AND THEIR HEART HAS LED THEM HERE, TO TRUST THAT."

68

Naples native Jeannette Dera-Seraphin points to her third-grade after-school program at Shadowlawn Elementary School as the spark for her interior design career. Sewing pillows and other creations during the class revealed her joy in artistic projects. “From there, I was always seeking things that would allow me to create,” she recalls. “I was always wanting to leave an environment or a space better than the way I found it.” Despite Dera-Seraphin’s talent, her parents were hesitant about her pursuing her passion in college. Coming from a family of 12 children, she was following a different path from her four older siblings’ more traditional careers—and art school was expensive. Ultimately, her parents gave her a year to try the residential diploma program at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. With that, Dera-Seraphin says, “I had nowhere to go but up.” Her awards and accolades not only convinced her parents and herself that she belonged in art school, but showed her younger siblings that they, too, could follow their dreams. A subsequent design position in Atlanta opened her eyes to the art and culture of a big city, but the 2008 recession decimated jobs and brought her home to Naples after earning her bachelor’s degree. She now reflects that the move helped her weather the storm and pursue her next steps: teaching design and earning her master’s degree from Miami International University of Art and Design. Through her experiences, Dera-Seraphin connected with students whose parents also questioned their artistic careers. “It was important for me to allow my students to know that if they’re here, and their heart has led them here, to trust that,” she explains. In 2015, an opportunity to teach in Paris for four months at the Paris College of Art further developed her art and career while solidifying her family’s support for her chosen path. Dera-Seraphin initially had no plans to return to her hometown, but says her heart led her full circle. After meeting her now-husband Melex in Naples in 2017, they’re raising their 3-year-old son near her family while she realizes her dreams of working in design, which she has combined with real estate. Coming back helped her appreciate the town from a new perspective, letting her “see Naples as the gem that it is.” Now, the 39-year-old translates this view into her design work to deliver the retreat and recharge her clients seek. Whether she’s showing a property’s potential or designing a space, she lives for the final walkthrough when clients proclaim, “This is exactly how I envisioned it.” Outside of work, when she’s not enjoying the beach with her family, Dera-Seraphin gives back to the community through nonprofit work. In one project for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Myers, she helped create a room where parents could stay while their child was in the hospital. She also mentors young women through her church. In introducing them to career options and inspiring them to pursue their dreams, she hopes to impact their lives just as her third-grade teacher did for her. —Erika Klein

JULIE VAN TONGEREN

I'M LEARNING MORE AND MORE THAT I’M THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT, WHEN THERE’S A NEED, I WANT TO FULFILL IT.”

066_YOUNG FACES_0921.indd 71

Julie Van Tongeren has dedicated her career to issues ranging from education to accessible green spaces to children’s health. Now, at age 35, she combines those experiences at the Community Foundation of Collier County, where she supports all of the area’s nonprofits—and their missions—at once. When she joined the foundation after moving to Naples in 2019, she wondered if she’d still feel a connection to the issues she’s passionate about. She set those concerns aside quickly after she started at CFCC, explaining, “I feel it even more.” Through collaborating with local organizations, she says, “I’m learning more and more that I’m the type of person that, when there’s a need, I want to fulfill it.” Van Tongeren’s Jesuit education at Boston College ingrained its mantra, “men and women for others,” which she has kept throughout her career. During a 2008 trip to China to support her sister, who sailed in the Beijing Olympics, Van Tongeren was exposed to the need present in the world through traveling around the countryside. After returning home to Detroit, she began working with a family foundation focused on rebuilding the city. She then worked for a range of organizations and issues until she and her husband, Drew, moved to Naples for his job. As the Community Foundation’s vice president of development, Van Tongeren regularly engages in her favorite part of philanthropy: “matching the need with the person who’s passionate about it.” She’s noticed that when Naples residents learn about local issues, they often want to get involved. Soon after beginning her position, she helped launch the “Your Passion. Your Collier” campaign, bringing together more than 100 nonprofits to address community needs including mental health, education, and disaster relief. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation helped fund nonprofits that couldn’t hold normal events and distributed funds to food pantries. “One of the major roles that we play in the community is this kind of philanthropic first responder,” she notes. Despite the difficulty of building a network in a new town, especially during a pandemic, Van Tongeren is now graduating from the Leadership Collier program and successfully reached her two-year milestone at work. She has found Naples to be a generous and accepting community. Even with the fear and uncertainty of the pandemic—starting, for her, when she and her husband closed on their new home the day everything shut down—she feels blessed to be in Naples. Besides at first feeling like she was on “perpetual vacation,” she has enjoyed exploring the area in their boat and playing tennis, and is considering joining the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Van Tongeren hopes to instill her community and family ideals in their first child, Hollis, born in July. She and her husband recently indulged their love of travel and exploring the outdoors with a babymoon to Montana for hiking and snowshoeing. They’re looking forward to their new adventure, beginning with introducing their son to their 8-year-old shepherd mix, Tilly, and then seeing him grow up and leave his own mark on the world. —Erika Klein NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

DANIELLE VIENS-PAYNE

ONE OF MY 2021 GOALS IS DOING MORE OF WHAT MAKES MY HEART HAPPY AND BRINGS ME JOY." 72

When she was younger, growing up in different towns along the East Coast and in the Midwest, Danielle Viens-Payne lined up her American Girl dolls for pretend lessons or to play teacher with kids she babysat. Studying education in college at the University of Maryland, everything seemed on track for her to achieve her dream of having her own classroom. Then, an instructor gave her some unexpected advice: Don’t do it. “She said, ‘You are the type of person that wants to catch the kids that fall into the cracks,’” Viens-Payne recalls. “‘You’re not going to be happy.’” The words were a “wake-up call” for Viens-Payne and left her uncertain about her next steps. Struggling with her career goals her senior year, she chanced upon a nonprofit position—and found her purpose working to motivate and empower Hispanic youth in Baltimore. In 2016, she moved to Florida for the warmth, sunshine, and to be closer to her mom. She quickly got a job at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, where she’s been ever since. Now, at age 33, she’s the leadership development coordinator working at the Naples and Immokalee locations. Viens-Payne enjoys creating a community for kids and providing experiences she missed as a child. “I was that kid that would come home alone after school, do my homework, and wait for my mom to come home,” she explains. “I wish I had a Boys & Girls Club when I was growing up.” Many of the kids attend the club from kindergarten through senior year, and some may spend more time at school and at the club than with their families. Viens-Payne says she loves watching them grow and seeing the spark in their eyes as they discover their talents. She expresses pride that all her seniors this year are not only graduating during a pandemic, but have a plan for their future. Her future goals? “One of my 2021 goals is doing more of what makes my heart happy and brings me joy,” she says. It’s no surprise that this means volunteering. Part of her work already involves serving on the board of the Alliance for Period Supplies of SWFL, which distributes period products to local women. Their efforts meet a need that Viens-Payne has realized is prevalent. With peace of mind from the supplies, she notes, recipients can “go to school or work and know that their biological needs are taken care of.” Next, she hopes to improve animals’ lives through volunteering with the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center or the Humane Society. When she’s not helping others, Viens-Payne enjoys beach nights with friends, dancing, and meditation. To prepare for her day, she follows a morning routine involving yoga, stretching, and a message of empowerment—and teaches kids she works with to do the same. She believes her success with the kids results from her actions coming from a genuine place. “I’m not just telling them to walk the walk,” she explains. “I’m actually doing it myself.” —Erika Klein

I’VE BEEN BLESSED TO TRAVEL THE WORLD AND EXPERIENCE SOME EXTRAORDINARY HOSPITALITY, FROM HOTELS TO RESTAURANTS TO COCKTAIL BARS. ALL OF THOSE ARE DRIVING MY VISION."

PHILIP MCCABE JR. Most 5-year-olds skip school to watch cartoons, but Philip McCabe Jr., now 25, played kindergarten hooky to shadow Naples’ legendary hotelier and developer Phil McCabe Sr.—also known as Dad. By the time he was in elementary school, young McCabe had a delicious taste of hospitality. As a 10-year-old, he was already behind the scenes at the now-closed McCabe’s Irish Pub on Fifth Avenue. “I was in the kitchen cutting carrots way back when,” he says. “In the heat of the operation, being a little devil, probably.” As a motivated high-schooler, the budding developer worked summers as a concierge at The Inn on 5th in the Club Level. “I genuinely want to make people happy, to give them an experience,” says McCabe, who oft recommends The London Club to clients looking for a cocktail and good jazz. Fastforward a decade and McCabe is at the helm of The Vine Room, a speakeasy set to open this fall. For a time, McCabe traded his hospitality skills for tennis—he played competitively at Barron Collier High School and was recruited to play for four years at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he studied economics. “Tennis really helped cultivate a teamwork mentality, something to take with me as I move into my career in hospitality and development,” he says. After spending his junior year studying abroad in Lausanne, Switzerland, the hospitality hub of Europe, then graduating college, McCabe moved back to Naples to work on capital investment and operations projects for the family business, Gulf Coast Commercial, two years ago. The Vine Room is one such project.

066_YOUNG FACES_0921.indd 75

“I really wanted to open up my own speakeasy restaurant,” he says. “I’ve been blessed to travel the world and experience some extraordinary hospitality, from hotels to restaurants to cocktail bars,” he says. “All of those are driving my vision.” McCabe likens this venture to something out of Narnia: once you walk through the ivy-covered door, you’re transported to the roaring ’20s. The speakeasy will also serve an espresso martini called McCabe’s Irish Coffee to honor its beloved namesake. The hope is to turn the Vine Room into a destination “you have to go to when you’re in Naples”—much like the legendary McCabe’s Irish Pub that drew in locals and tourists alike for 16 years with its Dubliner decor and chicken pot pie. When McCabe isn’t catering to clients, he unwinds with live music; he’s even trying to learn the piano. “I am working on one of my favorite piano pieces of all time, Clair de Lune by Debussy,” he says. “It is therapeutic for me to play.” He also ventures out to Artis—Naples, Naples’ Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Gulfshore Playhouse, and the Naples Players, where he once sang a Cabaret solo—lederhosen and all. To entertain his taste buds, McCabe favors Bleu Provence for its orange and Grand Marnier duck confit and Chardonnay from Meursault, poured by friend and sommelier Clément Cariot. For McCabe, Naples wouldn’t be Naples without its sunsets, noting that he would think of the golden sky to ease homesickness while he was away in the rainy, frigid Northeast for school. Today, he runs along the beach daily. “There is nothing quite like it,” he adds. —Yelena Alpert « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2021

FELINES OF THE FOREST A FASCINATING UPDATE ON NAPLES PANTHERS AND HOW THEY’RE HOLDING THEIR OWN IN COLLIER COUNTY BY MARIANNE MCNEE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY STATON

In the 1980s, Florida schoolchildren chose the Florida panther as the state's official animal. Conservation efforts have helped the species begin to rebound after hitting dangerously low population counts.

086_PANTHER_0921.indd 87

Want some good news about building up the population of a revered, but endangered, fourlegged species? The Florida panther, voted as the official state animal by Florida schoolchildren in the 1980s, has been on the receiving end of special attention for more than 40 years—with positive results. Collier County residents can be proud of the rebound from a mid-1990s low count of 20 to 30 panthers, when inbreeding was challenging their survival, to a recent estimated count of 120 to 230 panthers in Southwest Florida.

“The panther population in Collier County is doing well,” reports Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission panther biologist Dr. Dave Onorato. “We’re in a much better position than we were 25 years ago. The population is stable, maybe even increasing, but we think we are in a good spot overall right now.” This outcome is a testament to the many individuals— from biologists to conservationists, farmers, cattle ranchers, legislators, private residents, and others—who have given their ideas, land, time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears to maintain a critical piece of the Florida ecosystem. The biggest news for panthers developed this past summer, when Governor Ron DeSantis signed two pieces of legistlation: the landmark Florida Wildlife Corridor Act (FWCA) and Senate Bill 100 (SB

100), scrapping some proposed MultiUse Corridors of Regional Economic Significance (MCORES) toll roads. The FWCA provides $400 million to create corridors that connect diverse habitats for Florida’s wildlife, including major watersheds, ranches, and forests. “This has the potential to be of great benefit for many fish and wildlife species in Florida,” Onorato comments. “Protecting vital wild habitat linkages in perpetuity via some form of protection would be a win for wildlife and improve prospects for the continued range expansion of Florida panthers to the north.” The FWCA will use some of the funds to protect Florida Forever conservation land acquisition projects and Florida wildlife projects. SB 100 repeals the MCORES toll

roads program for the Southwest Connector, although two of the proposed highway projects, the Northern Turnpike Extension and roads connected to US-19, are still on the books, awaiting further action. The challenge now is to keep recovery going in view of newer problems that cannot be solved by the panthers’ bending to the crosswinds of modern life. Florida businesses and residents are coping with livestock depredations; a new panther illness, increased road-safety issues, development pressures, the hope for better compensation programs for cattle and hobby livestock predations, and land management issues are all swirling around Naples-area panthers like a hurricane.

KEY KITTY FACTS • Genetic restoration: In 1995, eight Texas cougars were released in southern Florida. There has been a steady increase in the panther population since then.

Multi-dimensional as these problems are, the overriding need for panther survival is as present as ever. This elusive apex predator plays an important role in balancing Florida’s ecosystem. “If you lose the balance between prey and predator, you’ll have an increase in your prey species, which will impact your vegetation,” explains Erin Myers, acting director of

the Florida Panther Wildlife Refuge. “Feral hogs aren’t native and are extremely destructive. Ranchers north of the Caloosahatchee River, where there aren’t as many panthers, will tell you how much habitat destruction they cause. There are also long-term vegetation imbalance impacts affecting fire and hydrology. All ecosystems in South Florida are fire-dependent.”

COEXIST WITH THE BIG CATS The Florida Cattleman’s Association (FCA), with 3,500 members, has played a critical role in preserving panther habitat. Yet they are also facing a challenging landscape. Many support the panthers and provide much of the land on which they move from corridor to corridor. But ranchers are

086_PANTHER_0921.indd 89

also dealing with calf depredations, and while there are compensation programs in place, livestock losses must be verified by officials, and sometimes, proof of panther action is elusive. Land tracts are large; day-today supervision is not possible. In addition, generational thinking around

• Recent land parcel preservation: Cypress Cove Conservancy, Conservation Collier’s Gore Tract, Edison Farms (Lee County), State of Florida purchase of Devil’s Garden area (Hendry County), and more. • Male panthers moving north: Trap cameras and other tracking systems are recording some panther movement north. • Female panther reproduction north of the Caloosahatchee River: Females have been seen north of the river for the first time since 1973. •Kitten births recorded in Collier County: Three new kittens observed in North Belle Meade, Collier County, in January 2021.

HOW TO BE A PANTHER PERSON THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO HELP THE PANTHER, OR PUMA CONCOLOR CORYI, INCLUDING WHAT'S BELOW. • To report sightings of live, dead, or injured panthers, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Wildlife Alert Hotline: 888-404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC or *FWC on a cell phone. • Support the Florida specialty license plate program. • Look out for panther-crossing signs posted in neighborhoods near important habitat. • Watch The Wild Divide (2021) on YouTube, presented by the Florida Wildlife Corridor.

what is the best path forward is evolving. Many ranching families have noble intentions and callings to continue their legacy, while the pressure to sell land to real estate developers, or for alternative land uses such as agriculture or mining, is very present. In response, the federal and state governments, private conservation groups, and wildlife agencies work hard to mitigate problems. “The panther world is a diverse ecosystem covering several habitats, so we have to approach the situation from many angles,” says Amber Crooks, the Conservancy of

Southwest Florida’s environmental policy manager. “First, we are looking to protect habitat in core areas. Second, we are working to preserve wildlife corridors so that animals can get from one point to another, and third, we are encouraging road builders to incorporate underpasses. Everyone agrees that the human–wildlife conflicts should be addressed, and measures to reduce them implemented.” The Conservancy offers the Florida Panther Compensation Program, remunerating livestock keepers with 100 or fewer cattle for a panther

The Florida panther will continue to be on the endangered species list until there are three distinct established colonies. Today, there's only one in southern Florida. The most common cause of panther death is vehicular strike, followed by intraspecific aggression and starvation.

predation. Defenders of Wildlife also help build protective pens, sometimes working with the Conservancy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Services Administration Livestock Indemnity Program also repays ranchers for lost cattle, but only at 75 percent of market value. Federal guidelines make it hard to prove panther predation, adding to the frustration. Florida offers the more flexible Rural and Family Lands Protection Program, which has no funding this year. Liesa Priddy, owner of JB Ranch in Immokalee, is a member of the FCA and a former FWC Commissioner. She reports the concerns many ranchers have. “On the one hand, panther habitat is decreasing, yet the number of panthers is going up,” she explains. “People with livestock feel that the carrying capacity for panthers in our area has

086_PANTHER_0921.indd 91

been exceeded and, therefore, the human–wildlife conflict is becoming a greater concern. In addition, it’s almost impossible, under current guidelines, for larger ranchers to receive any compensation for cattle losses due to panther predation. What we’d like to see developed is a program that compensates landowners who provide habitat for endangered species, essentially a payment for ‘ecosystem services.” Even with the new legislation and updates, this dedicated group of stakeholders will need to continue to overcome these problems, find new solutions, and seek out some sort of middle ground. “For many, just knowing that the panther is out there roaming amongst the wild areas of Collier County is what makes living in Southwest Florida gratifying,” says Onorato. “The Florida panther will figure out how to survive if given the chance; they’ve done so for millennia.” «

PANTHER PROBLEMS Endangered species status continues: Panthers will come off the list when there are three distinct established colonies. Today there is only one in southern Florida. Habitat loss: With Florida’s increasing population, development pressure continues. Annual panther deaths statewide: The average is about 25 per year over the past five years, due to vehicular strikes (most common), intraspecific aggression, and starvation. Feline leukomyelopathy: A neurological disease seen in some panthers starting in 2018, resulting in weak back legs. Research is ongoing. A

nthony Tumbarello has an image saved on his phone. He looks at it like some people look at photos of their kids—daily and for inspiration, motivation, and a reminder of the value of hard work. It’s a screenshot of his bank account. The total at the bottom: only $63. It wasn’t long ago that Tumbarello was broke—just two years prior—and it was because he was putting every dime he earned and every moment he had into starting his own gym, which is now open and called CTP: Coach Tumbarello Performance. “I look at it all the time,” Tumbarello, 31, says of that bank account screenshot. “Any time I’m thinking about taking it easy, I’ll look at it.” His timing was terrible for opening a training business—it was the height of the pandemic—so the only option he had was to bring clients to a tiny speck of a place, a 250-square-foot garage where he was living in the St. Croix Apartments. He built it, in just a matter of months, into a place where locals go to get their asses handed to them; in a remarkably short time, it also became a place where pro athletes were lining up—including professional soccer, football, and baseball stars, the names you hear on ESPN. Tumbarello grew up in a sports-obsessed household in New York. His dad was a Jets fan, his mom a diehard for the Dolphins (mostly because her maiden name was Marino); his brothers liked the Chargers and Tumbarello stayed loyal to his dad’s Jets. They’d go to church in their mismatched football jerseys. “Football was always the driving force for us,” Tumbarello says. They moved from New York to Naples in 2001, when Tumbarello was in middle school, and he grew up on the Bonita Springs used car lot his dad owned, a place that became his playground and where he learned business. At 5-foot-6, Tumbarello ignored anyone who told him he didn’t have the stature to play football. “Yes, everybody’s going to look huge next to me,” he jokes. “It doesn’t even phase me. I always thought I was the biggest guy

in the room.” He played football at Gulf Coast High and then St. John Neumann during his senior year. He played for Iona College but the school dropped its football team after his freshman year, so Tumbarello came back home to play semi-pro for the Collier Carnage. He tried out for the UFL and made the Omaha Nighthawks, but an injury ended his pro career before it really began. Tumbarello had no idea what life looked like without football, so he took a job coaching for Estero High for two years. Then he worked at LA Fitness for a few years before becoming a trainer at Total Athletic Performance, where he met one of his mentors, Derek Touchette. In 2018, he took a job at a gym in Tampa that he says “just didn’t work out.” He worked as a marketing intern for a startup tech company, and when the relationship with his fiancée ended, Tumbarello took a screenshot of his two-digit bank account balance and moved in with his dad in Naples. Tumbarello returned to working for Touchette and “that’s when we just blew up”—when he combined the marketing skills he had learned with what he knew about training. That summer, Tumbarello ended up with nine pro athletes to train, including Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew and Naples’ own wide receiver, Michael Walker, who recently got picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles. The pros kept telling their friends about Tumbarello; he was

092_Tumbarello_0921.indd 95

getting so many calls, he realized it was time to start his own thing. At first, he was running it out of that tiny garage and the field at North Collier High School. He realized he needed a bigger space, and in September 2020, he opened a 2,000-square-foot facility in the Byrnwood Trade Center off Old 41. He got so busy so quickly that he brought on a couple trainers to help, and he figures he’ll be adding several more by the end of the year. “I’m very proud to say I paid for it all myself,” he says. Since expanding, he has worked with Krishawn Hogan of the Saints, pro soccer player Katie Johnson of the Chicago Red Stars, and Twins outfielder Max Kepler. Twins’ lefty reliever Lewis Thorpe heard about Tumbarello from a friend. As soon as they started working together, Thorpe says they immediately had a connection. “You know, we just matched,” Thorpe says. “He was a good fit for me. He doesn’t just give everyone one program. He creates programs to what he sees what’s going with you and what you’re going to need to help you to succeed. He keeps things light and keeps it fun.” Uncommon for pro ball, Thorpe grew up in Australia but was still one of the top prospects when he signed in 2012. The Twins sent him to the Gulf Coast League, but he had Tommy John surgery (UCL surgery) that caused him to miss all of 2015 and 2016. He made PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2020

his comeback for the Fort Myers Miracle and then finally made it to the majors in June 2019, but had a season the Twins Daily blog called “an unmitigated disaster,” with Thorpe’s fastball dropping in velocity and an ERA of 6.06. When Thorpe showed up to Tumbarello’s gym, he needed help, a regimen that could get him in killer shape before spring training this year. On March 7, he made his debut for 2021, striking at the top of the Rays’ batting order and helping solidify his chances of staying in the majors this year. He gives Tumbarello a lot of credit for getting him ready for the season, in part because Tumbarello shared his own story of nearly going broke. “He told me that story, and then I saw how he’s pushing himself every day to where he wants to be,” says Thorpe. “It’s inspiring. It makes you want to work harder.” NFL wide receiver Michael Walker trained with Tumbarello this off-season. He was a free agent and needed to stay in playing shape while he tried out for a new team. Walker had back surgery last year, so Tumbarello tailored a workout to help his recovery. The work concentrates on the mechanics of the exercise, making sure Walker has a neutral spine, without arching his back or putting too much pressure on his injury. “That’s been huge for me,” Walker says. “A lot of guys can give you a standard workout, but Anthony sits down and figures out your goals and where you’re trying to go.” Though Walker ultimately had success, finding a home with the Eagles, he had a lot of adversity and challenges along the way but never gave up. This positivity and unrelenting drive 96

are something he shares with Tumbarello. “He’s been through it all,” says Walker, who has known Tumbarello from the time they were both kids. “It is one of the coolest things, to see where he is at right now. He is not ready to stop. He’s got big dreams and big aspirations.” This summer, Tumbarello worked with about a dozen professional athletes, who train alongside business professionals, moms, and even high-school athletes, all doing custom

routines. He says that more than anything, his clients see his work ethic and it’s what pushes them to try harder. “I grind my face off,” he says. “I’m up at 5 every morning and there are nights I don’t get home until 9 or 10 at night. My weekends are just programming, training, online marketing; I’ve been putting away 80 or 90 percent of my income for a while. My goal is to make this the biggest training facility in Florida and I think I can do that in a couple years.” (ctptrain.com) « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER | JUNE 2020 2021

ABOUT THE LIST Naples Illustrated partnered with the firm Professional Research Services and asked licensed Collier and Lee counties attorneys who they would recommend (other than themselves), in the area. Attorneys were allowed to name three colleagues in each specialty. Nominees were then evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the status of their licenses, and their standing with The Florida Bar. Qualifying attorneys who received the highest number of votes are reflected on the following list.

JAMES A. BOATMAN, JR., ESQ. Jim Boatman is a well-known litigator and the founder of Boatman Ricci, one of the highest-rated local law firms with offices in Naples, Marco Island, Clearwater, and Tallahassee. He is also a principal at Trinity Title. Boatman Ricci is a full-service firm with litigation DNA, supplemented by practitioners in areas such as trust and estates, real estate transactions, intellectual property, employer-side employment, and criminal defense. Beyond being named as a Naples Top Lawyer, Boatman has achieved an AV-Preeminent Rating by his peers and consistently receives Martindale-Hubble’s “Client Distinction Award,” given to less than 1 percent of all AV-Rated lawyers. As a follower of Jesus, Boatman seeks to be “truth guided, relationship driven” in all his endeavors. This slogan adorns Boatman Ricci’s offices and encompasses the firm’s culture and dealings with clients, adversaries, and the court system. Being “truth guided,” Boatman believes that when one advocates from a position founded in objective truth, that advocate’s argument resonates uniquely. Being “relationship driven,” Boatman provides the same high level of diligence and

efficacy whether the client is a Fortune 500 company that needs to aggressively prosecute litigation or an individual who simply needs pragmatic consultation. Outside of the office, Boatman is a family man. He is happily married to his wife, Joy, of 29 years and is father to four children, two biological and two adopted out of local foster care. Away from the rigors of legal work, when he isn’t spending time with his family, Boatman unwinds at Sebring International Raceway, where he has been a high-performance driving instructor for many years. In business, as well as family and social affairs, Boatman’s faith in Jesus Christ is central. He is always ready to weave the Gospel into his work and hobbies. Whether he is sharing his testimony with a client or giving a word or prayer at a local assembly, Boatman is more than happy to disciple anyone the Lord leads to him. Jim Boatman at Boatman Ricci is an excellent choice when looking for an effective lawyer who can be trusted to have your best interests at heart when conflicts arise.

Naples native Colette Wetzel founded Cultured, her charcuterie board business, shortly after moving to Austin in 2016. “My mother is French-Canadian and she was one of ten children,” she recalls. “I grew up participating in big family celebrations. I loved having a part in hosting them, and it inspired my passion for food and entertaining.” She specializes in arrangements of artisan cheeses, cured meats, fruit, and organic produce for groups ranging from 40 to 200, along with small boxes and DIY grazing platter kits for individual consumers; olives, capers, jams, and savory spreads such as hummus round out the presentations. While she hopes to expand her business in the years to come and partner with national companies, she says she remains focused on her goal of helping people to “experience the love of life’s uncomplicated pleasures.” (culturedatx.com)

EAT + DRINK OPENING

Southern Comfort Barry Larkin and Adam Nardis first met in 2014, when Larkin opened The Continental as bar manager and worked with Adam’s wife, Erin. Both men wanted to open their own restaurant, and their friendship blossomed. They realized that dream last year, when they unveiled Seventh South Craft Food + Drink in the space formerly occupied by Seventh Avenue Social. “We wanted a place that was both comfortable and consistent,” says Larkin. “We’re off the beaten track, so our goal was a restaurant with a neighborhood feel. We wanted someplace with reasonable prices that people could visit every week, not just on special occasions.” Nardis’s innovative menu contains starters such as white asparagus soup and an ahi egg roll; his most popular entrée is tagliatelle with seven-hour ragout and his grandmother’s meatballs. Behind the bar, Larkin works with his team to create a seasonally changing list of cocktails such as Dear Dad (house blend of rums, banana and bitter liqueur, and chocolate walnut bitters) and Iceberg Theory (Codigo Rosa tequila, maraschino liqueur, grapefruit, bitters, and basil). The wine list is extensive and carefully chosen, with an emphasis on smaller properties that are difficult to find. In the end, it all comes down to oldfashioned hospitality. “I visit every table in the course of the night,” says Larkin. “What I love most about the business is having the opportunity to talk to guests.” (seventhsouth.com) JUAN NERIS

Eggs Benedict from Seventh South Craft Food + Drink is just one element that conveys the comfortable neighborhood feel.

During the pandemic, some folks baked sourdough bread, others took up knitting, and Maria Low and James Crombie began growing sprouted vegetables for themselves. They enjoyed the bounty so much that they opened Naples Microgreens (naplesmicrogreens. com) one year ago. “During the pandemic, we noticed that people were more interested in taking care of their health and boosting their immune system,” says Low. “Microgreens are easy to grow, and they only take between eight and 20 days from planting to harvest.” The key ingredient is sulforaphane, which tests have shown may be effective against the development of diabetes, cancer, and a host of other diseases. Putting that aside, there’s an intrinsic benefit to catching the plant at the very beginning of its development cycle. “When seeds first sprout,” says James, “they’re loaded with nutrients which they later use to help the plant grow.” Low and Crombie focus primarily on consumers and supply grow kits that provide a DIY option. Humberto Quintero, owner of The Naples Micro-Farm (thenaplesmicrofarms.com), sells both to the public and to local restaurants such as Chops and Pazzo! in Naples, as well as T42 and the Barefoot Beach Club in Bonita Springs. The greens have an unexpected appeal beyond their use as a garnish. “Children seem to like them,” says Quintero, “and it’s easier to get them to eat microgreens than fully grown vegetables.” While Quintero typically grows and sells 60 pounds per week, Low and Crombie view their business as more of a passion project. “Educating people is more important to us than money,” Low says. “Growing and eating microgreens is a simple process for an exquisite reward.”

GRILLING

In Florida, we’re fortunate to be able to grill nearly year-round. Most masters of the barbecue gravitate toward burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and steaks; grilling vegetables, however, requires precision, care, and some specialized knowledge. “With meat and fish, you would typically salt [it] before putting it on the grill,” says Jeff Mitchell, owner/ chef at The Local. “Salt leaches out the moisture from vegetables and makes it difficult to get good flavor from them, so salt them after cooking. Remember that vegetables also have sugars, which will make them caramelize.” Mitchell’s tips for the home cook are simple: preheat the grill; keep it clean; brush it lightly with grapeseed oil before

putting anything on it; and oil your vegetables. Know where your hot spots are; vegetables are more likely to burn than meat or fish. (thelocalnaples.com) Another local veggie grilling enthusiast is Shannon Morgan. This vegetarian participated in an Eggfest cookoff sponsored by the manufacturers of the Big Green Egg and fell in love with the Kamado-style grill. She serves as a brand ambassador and creates recipes such as cauliflower wings and beet burgers. With vegetables, she advises keeping the temperature at 350 and reducing the amount of flame. “Before cooking, raise the grill grate to keep the vegetables away from the heat source. There’s always the risk of having them drop through the grate, so use a perforated grill pan or skewer them together to form a kebob. Kamado grills retain heat well and make it easy to control the temperature, so feel free to experiment— people need to realize how versatile vegetarian cooking can be.” (instagram.com/biggreeneggfoodie)

Small greens, big benefits

You’ve probably seen small, delicate bunches of greens atop soups, pizzas, and salads. Microgreens, the young form of vegetables, do more than provide decoration and a tasty crunch: According to a study in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, these superfoods contain more minerals and nutrients than their full-grown versions. Humberto Quintero, owner and grower at The Naples Micro-Farm, started off growing microgreens for himself and his family several years ago. (Learn more about The Naples Micro-Farm on page 122.) Now, his company offers nine varieties of microgreens, all grown to order in seven to 10 days for freshness. If you’re new to microgreens, he recommends starting with broccoli or cabbage. Whichever microgreens you try, he says, “they will enhance flavors, make dishes look beautiful, and are way healthy.” Try his recipe below for a nutritious take on coleslaw. (thenaplesmicrofarms.com) MICRO COLESLAW (SERVES 4) Ingredients 4 cups chopped or shredded green cabbage 1/ cup finely minced onion or shallot 4 1 tbsp. olive oil 1 tbsp. white vinegar 1 handful red cabbage microgreens 2 tbsp. sour cream or mayonnaise 1 pinch of sugar and salt (to taste) Instructions In a large bowl, toss together the green cabbage, onion, and red cabbage microgreens until combined. Next, prepare the dressing by whisking together the sour cream or mayonnaise with the vinegar and olive oil. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture; mix until combined. Add sugar and salt to taste. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

BALANCE OPEN SPACES

HAPPY TRAILS A new trail will give Naples residents and visitors a dedicated area to walk, run, and bike. Naples Pathway Coalition (NPC), the nonprofit working to create the Paradise Coast Trail, envisions a 70-plus mile track connecting Naples, Bonita Springs, Collier Seminole State Park, and other Collier County locations. “This is a significant need for the area,” says Michelle Avola-Brown, executive director of NPC. “If you look at trail maps of Florida, it’s like they forgot Southwest Florida.” AvolaBrown explains that besides promoting wellness, the trail should provide a safe and environmentally friendly transportation alternative

for residents, as well as increase tourism, jobs, and property values of nearby homes. The trail is currently undergoing a feasibility study and environmental reviews, which will likely take around 14 months to complete. While there may be future delays, Avola-Brown hopes construction can start on sections of the trail next summer, with segments opening to public use as they are completed. She estimates approximately five to 10 years to finish the entire trail, adding that continued community support, including from local homeowners’ associations, is vital to keep the project moving. “Trails are just open for everybody, any fitness level, any interest level,” says Avola-Brown. “There’s something anybody pretty much can do on a trail.” (naplespathways.org)

PET SAFETY

Dogs and Cane Toads When you take your dog for an evening walk, watch for cane toads, also known as bufo toads. These non-native amphibians secrete toxins that can sicken or kill animals that bite or lick them, such as dogs. “Curious pets are most often at risk,” explains Dr. Sterling Sigmond, a veterinarian at Naples Coastal Animal Hospital. She recommends being watchful of pets that love to explore their environments, like terriers and retrievers, during times that toads are particularly active: during the summer, after it rains, and from dusk to dawn. To reduce the risk, Sigmond suggests keeping your pets inside at night and making your yard less attractive to toads by keeping your grass short, covering swimming pools, filling holes around structures, and turning off outdoor lights that attract insects (a food source for toads). If your pet contacts a toad, they may paw at their mouths, drool, vomit, or have a seizure. Sigmond advises immediately flushing your pet’s mouth and face with water before seeking veterinary care. One cane toad’s toxins can be fatal to a 20- to 30-pound dog, she notes. (naplescoastalvet.com)

YOGA FOR GOOD As a new college graduate, Lauren Fox was working as a yoga teacher back home in Naples and remembers a friend being unable to afford the drop-in fee for a class. Her friend’s mother had recently passed away from cancer and Fox knew she needed the class, so she ended up paying, despite having little money at the time herself. “I just remember thinking, how can people afford yoga when it’s this expensive?” Fox recalls. The experience inspired Fox to found Donation Yoga Naples. The organization holds yoga classes on the beach with participants paying the amount they can afford, typically $10 to $20. “I’ve never turned anybody away,” says Fox. “All I ask is that those people who don’t donate money just clean the beach.” The organization, which focuses on “seeing peace signs over dollar signs,” also gives back to the community by donating 50 percent of all proceeds to local nonprofits, switching each month between human and animal-focused causes, such as United Way of Collier County and Friends of Rookery Bay. Fox hopes to expand the number of teachers and classes, helping more people enjoy yoga. (donationyoganaples.com)

DRIVE-BY WORKOUTS Ever wanted the gym to come to you? Thanks to COVID-19, certified personal trainer John Skokna started a mobile gym using a customized trailer. He takes his Skokna Strength Performance Unit to parks, driveways, and sports fields, where it folds out into a training area with squat racks, kettlebells, pull-up bars, and more. “Anything you can think of that you’d have in a gym can be found in my trailer,” Skokna explains. He believes the trailer can continue to help people meet their workout goals even as life and fitness return to normal after the pandemic. Besides removing the stress of finding time for a trip to the gym, the trailer lets you exercise outdoors, providing fresh air and vitamin D. Everything is sanitized after the previous person or group, and Skokna’s personalized attention ensures proper form to avoid injury and to give you the foundation to return to a gym when you choose to. “Whatever your goals are, those are my goals,” he notes. “Both physically and health-wise, I’ll meet you wherever you’re at.” (skoknastrength.com)

The Freedom Waters Foundation provides therapeutic boating, fishing, and adaptive sailing programs for children and adults with disabilities or life-threatening illnesses, as well as veterans and atrisk youth. Founder and executive director Debra Frenkel first entered the boating world while working as a social worker in Chicago. “I was getting pretty burnt out and kept seeing sailboats in my head,” she remembers. She learned to sail and volunteered with a disabled sailing program, then ended up running several such programs herself over the following decade. One of the first people she met in the industry, John Weller, later became the co-founder of Freedom Waters Foundation. A cancer survivor, he wanted to hold boat outings for children with cancer and soon encouraged Frenkel to start her own foundation. She launched it in 2006, choosing the name after a Paralympic sailor friend told her he kept going out on the water because of the freedom it offered. After 15 years, the organization provides more than 3,200 on-the-water experiences annually. Frenkel recalls the first veterans’ event drawing only two participants, both of whom seemed uncomfortable to be there. But after their fishing trip, she says, “They were totally changed men—smiling, talking, laughing.” One of them helped Frenkel expand the veterans’ program, bringing the next trip to 142 veterans and leading to established year-round veterans’ events. Frenkel says her favorite part of running the foundation is “making people smile, feel loved, and giving them a memory for a lifetime.” As the organization works toward building a national presence, more people will have the opportunity to benefit from boating experiences. “Being out in nature, being one with water, it is just a natural therapy,” Frenkel explains. “People at the end of all of our trips are always more relaxed.” With an average of 300 volunteers per year helping in the Naples and Fort Lauderdale offices and on the water, the organization builds a greater sense of understanding and tolerance for differences. BEAUTY

Elegant, inimitable, and timeless, the iconic Chanel N°5 celebrates its centennial this year. In 1921, Coco Chanel and renowned perfumer Ernest Beaux crafted a fragrance for the modern woman that Chanel had been “waiting for.” Thus, N°5 was born. In the 100 years since, N°5 has remained a staple for sophisticated wearers around the globe, with hints of jasmine, rose, sandalwood, and vanilla warming the famously clean top notes. To celebrate captivating the senses for a century, the fashion house released the Factory 5 Collection, a whimsical limited-edition capsule designed to capture and layer upon the unforgettable scent. Join in on the fragrant fête with The Shower Gel ($75), The Sparkling Body Gel ($85), The Soap ($45), N°5 Eau de Parfum ($138 for 3.4 fl. oz.), and The Bath Tablets ($75). —Abigail Duffy

She’s married to James Bloom, who has worked in the community for 28 years and is currently the undersheriff for the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, and they have three kids: Gavin (23), who also works in the Collier County Sheriff’s Office; Cassidy (17), a junior at Community School of Naples and a nationally ranked volleyball player; and Maille (12), a sixth-grader at Community School and a dog whisperer to their three pooches. Within a 10-mile radius, Bloom can access her parents, in-laws, and siblings. A proud alumna of Florida Gulf Coast University, Bloom’s career as the founder and creative director of Oh Snap Media is focused on photography, videography, event coordination, and media marketing services for Naples’ Fifth Avenue South and the downtown historic district.
