THE POWER OF TEN his month starts not only a new year, but also a new decade—which is an intriguing thought to process, considering how everyone was buzzing about the new millennium not so long ago. I don’t tend to get hung up on the calendar, but while searching recently for something in our archives, I came across the January 2000 issue of this magazine and thought it might be interesting to look back on Naples a decade ago. One thing in particular caught my eye: the masthead, or list of staff members and contributors employed by our company. While some of the names that populate this list have changed over the years, many individuals who were on that decade-old masthead still play vital roles at our company today. For example, Senior Account Executive Dee Wade celebrates her eighteenth anniversary with Palm Beach Media Group this month. And she is not the only one with longevity. Our team includes a number of people who have been with the company for 10 years or more, some of them advancing to top management positions. Our success is due in no small part to this stability. Our people are committed to the community and become established in it, often with a sense of service on their own time. Their involvement in both business and charitable organizations helps the community and makes us proud of them. In addition to these long-standing members of the PBMG family, we continue to recruit top talent within the publishing industry, especially those with expertise in the targeted areas that help us grow. We also identify and nurture up-and-comers with great potential and create opportunities for them to flourish. This combination of established and new talent strengthens our gene pool and keeps our performance at optimal levels. Ten years ago, while we may have had a strategic vision about our corporate direction and big-picture plans for how to get there, no one really knew what the future held. So, naturally, I’m quite pleased with where we are today—and especially happy with and for the people who have helped us on that journey. That said, I am looking forward to the promise of a new year—and what a new decade will hold for us. I hope you are too.

POWERFUL uring the summer, when things were hot and languid, restaurateurs, retailers, builders and residents had time to wonder what the season would bring. It’s here, and it’s powerful. The back-to-back blockbuster events that marked the official seasonal kickoff in mid-November included the opening of the Naples Botanical Garden (see pictures, page 20) and the Immokalee Foundation’s Fiesta of Fun, which raised $1 million. These happenings were joined by the Community School’s twenty-fifth anniversary Angel Ball, the Naples Equestrian Challenge’s Barn Dance, the first anniversary celebration of Sea Salt, and the annual NCH Hospital Ball, among many other events. Other venerable institutions have cause to celebrate. The Patty & Jay Baker Naples Museum of Art welcomes the return of glass artist Dale Chihuly for the museum’s tenth anniversary, and the Harmon-Meek Gallery marks the start of its forty-sixth season with an exhibit of works by its original opening artist, Jon Corbino (page 151). Bleu Provence is tastefully entering its flavorful second decade (page 42), as are the planners of this month’s Naples Winter Wine Festival (page 46). Lorraine and Bob McCashin have combined their love of Naples with their powerful passion for all things French in an Old Naples cottage (page 76). Bernie Simmonds has plugged in the future of his electrical contracting business by building a new corporate headquarters, complete with a heliport and potential manufacturing facilities for ULA electrical panels (page 126). There’s a certain electricity surrounding the power of engines, celebrated in the launch of a stylish Mercedes-Benz Gullwing SLS AMG (page 54) and designerinspired jet interiors (page 70). Luxury goes green with powerful, and planet-friendly, cars (page 82). The community and the nation will receive a jolt with a meeting of great minds at the first-ever Imagine Solutions thought conference in February (page 66), which will address the economy, education, energy, environment and health. Wade Imre Morissette isn’t famous merely because of his twin sister, alt-rock star Alanis Morissette. The former ambassador for lululemon, the popular yoga-inspired athletic apparel company, travels the world practicing and teaching yoga, incorporating his other passion, music. Wade’s visits to India, Africa, Fiji and other farflung places have enlightened and inspired him to live life to the fullest. NI spoke with Wade, who brings his practice to Bala Vinyasa Yoga, Naples, January 29-31. —Deanna Vella ■ Why choose yoga over other disciplines? I did karate and I hated that, because I didn’t like fighting. I kicked a girl in the head once, and I knew it wasn’t for me. I tried tai chi and that was better. But then I did yoga in California and it was great. ■ What do you love about traveling? Being able to see globally how we’re essentially all the same, especially in India and Africa, where the cultures may be totally different. But we all have stresses in our life and we all look for healing and an easy lifestyle. ■ Are you and Alanis close? We’re going to Hawaii together. She’s been instrumental throughout my life. She wrote the foreword to my book. Sometimes it’s nice to have a famous sister. I do get homesick, too, so hearing my sister sing when I’m away is great. ■ What does music mean to you? Music universally heals and touches people, and it makes you a more sensitive person. … I maintain a regular practice and let the music inspire me. I’m talking music across the board, everything from Madonna to Jack Johnson, to traditional Indian or African music. Alanis is always on my play list, too. She’s a huge inspiration for me.

DESIGNING FOR A CAUSE Glenn Midnet, founder and CEO of Design Group West, Naples, a design firm, created Furniture for the Cure to pay tribute to those who have braved cancer. His mother’s breast cancer when he was a boy left an indelible impression. “I remember my mom putting her wig on in front of a vanity, feeling insecure,” Midnet says. “The idea of the Alyce chair came to me—curves and lines of a cancer ribbon.” During a fundraiser, he sketched the chair on a cocktail napkin. The idea developed into an entire collection of elegant furniture that incorporates the signature cancer awareness ribbon into each piece, named after someone who has battled cancer and inspired those around them. The first item, the Alyce chair, can be ordered online (furnitureforthecure.org) and delivered with a gift card containing an inspirational message. “It’s a way to reach out and let a loved one know they are not alone,” Midnet says. Ten percent of each sale goes to cancer research. —Chris Wells

KITCHEN ARTIST Delectable bites and luscious culinary presentations are a modern art form, as budding chef Deniece Vella knows. The 19-year-old has worked in Ristorante da Benito in New Jersey, which was recognized in 2008 with a Readers’ and Critics’ Choice Award by New Jersey Monthly. Celebrities like Derek Jeter and former President Bill Clinton have dined at da Benito, and Vella was in the kitchen, plating delicious meals. Currently, Vella works as a personal chef in Naples, creating foods for private parties and everyday eats. She also is finalizing and compiling recipes for a cookbook with easy-to-make dishes. —Deanna Vella

NOT TOO MANY COOKS Patsy Wright Gomez reads cookbooks instead of novels. The Port Royal resident has had a love of cooking that started in a large farm home in North Carolina, where she grew up with five siblings, her parents and grandparents. “Like many Southern farm homes, there were always excellent aromas arising from that kitchen,” she says. Gomez and her sister, Maria Wright Garver, were planning to compile a cookbook of their own favorites, but the project was shelved for years when her sister passed away unexpectedly. FANCY FOLK FRENCH BLEU PROVENCE CONTINUES TO MARRY THE FINEST OF FRENCH TRADITIONS AFTER 10 YEARS. BY CHELLE KOSTER WALTON

Meat that melts in your mouth. We’ve all heard that exaggerated description to indicate the ultimate tenderness of a filet mignon or other prime cut. The Kobe beef short ribs at Bleu Provence, however, award credence to the culinary hyperbole. Listed under the menu’s Viandes Mijotées (slow-cooked meat), the morsels of rich beef have stewed long in red wine before reaching the table in a shimmering reduction, served with hearty mashed potatoes and baby carrots. Rustic while luxurious, the dish demonstrates how the restaurant lives up to the Provence in its name with authentic French provincial cuisine. As for the blue part, that reflects in everything from the color of the walls to one of the cheeses on the appetizer plate to how you feel when you’ve reached the bottom of the duo black and white chocolate mousse dish, craving just a bit more—a little sad because it was so incredibly creamy and now it’s gone, but then the chocolate buzz kicks in. We started with the cheese plate, a selection of three soft creamy cheeses—a bleu, a Brie, and a Vacherin—served with figs and green apple slices. Nice, but I would have liked more variety in texture and an identification of the cheeses without having to ask.

We also sampled burgundy escargots, rimmed with parsley butter and heavy on garlic. Other starters explore traditional French cuisine and interpretations modernes: Provençal fish soup, French onion soup, warm French goat cheese and mesclun, pangrilled mussels, frog legs and tuna tartare. Along with the velvety short ribs, we tucked into an entrée of walnut-crusted

shrimp with guacamole. An inspired variation on deep-fried shrimp, it accomplished the same moisture seal but with the added bonus of nuttiness. The guacamole sounded like a strange accompaniment, but actually, with its citric squeeze, contributed a nice acidity to cut all that protein. Arugula and slices of mango and papaya finished the dish with color and texture.

The shrimp dish wasn’t what you might consider typical for a French restaurant, but Bleu Provence, now a decade old, has kept its clientele with its fresh applications, such as the pork chop glazed with honey sauce, or wild king salmon with creamy horseradish sauce and basmati rice. More classic, the braised lamb shank on couscous with figs reflects France’s North African influence, while sautéed sweetbreads with mushrooms and creamy lemon sauce is as purely French as the Eiffel Tower that marks items on the menu available for early dining. Wine weighs in heavily on the Bleu Provence dining experience. Its notebook of offerings can be daunting—1,700 varieties in all. To save ourselves from delaying our meal due to indecisiveness, we selected a Domaine Diochon Moulin-a-Vent 2007 from the short specials menu—a Pinot Noir blend that suited both our seafood and meat selections, and went equally well with the mousse dessert. But alas, it did come to an end, as all good things must. The tenth annual festival will be held January 29-31, with the theme “Expanding Horizons.” The format is similar to years past: Vintner Dinners on Friday evening in the homes of the trustees, pairing celebrity chefs with participating winemakers; Saturday’s auction at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples; and Sunday’s Celebration Brunch, which allows guests to mingle with chefs and vintners. “We got involved with the festival because it presented an incredible opportunity to help children at risk,” says Francis Rooney, who serves as 2010 festival chair along with his wife, Kathleen. All eyes will be on the auction as it unfolds on Saturday, and Rooney is grateful to the vintners who have stepped up and given generously. Ann Colgin will offer a cooking class at her home in Napa hosted by Thomas Keller, with a meal accompanied by Colgin wines. Star-struck participants may bid on a private dinner in Los Angeles with Kyle MacLachlan, actor and producer of Desperate Housewives, or dine with Judge Judy in Manhattan prior to paying a backstage visit to Regis and Kelly. Of the lots that combine wine and travel, perhaps the most tempting is a 10-day tour of South Africa conducted by Garen Staglin, with visits to Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek and Zelma Long’s Vilafonté winery, along with trips to Table Mountain and a game preserve. One innovation at the auction this year will be the Fund A Need lot, which will allow bidders to pledge money to help children. FIRST CLASS FINE WOODS A deceptively rustic retreat on Maine’s coast BY ROBERT RAGAINI

Nestled amid winding lanes on 60 birch- and fir-dotted acres near Kennebunkport, Maine, the vacation village Hidden Pond lures visitors looking for a serene sojourn. Automotive theater just doesn’t get any more theatrical than this. Stroll nonchalantly toward the fabulous MercedesBenz SLS AMG, tug gently on the door handle, and watch in wonderment as the door levitates skyward. Heads spin. Jaws drop. Children point with mouths agape. Elvis strolling arm-in-arm with Chewbaca from Star Wars wouldn’t cause this kind of reaction. For a double dose of amazement, ease up to the front of Truluck’s on Fourth Street and have your passenger synchronize her door opening with yours. Viewed headon, the sight is as majestic as an osprey about to take flight. Onlookers will erupt into spontaneous applause. Auto aficionados know all too well that way back in the mid-1950s, Mercedes built a sports car called the 300SL. Featuring the same kind of ascending portals, it was naturally nicknamed the Gullwing. Today you’d pay more than half a million dollars for the pleasure of owning one of these automotive icons.

This brand new SLS is the spiritual, and worthy, successor to that 300SL. It goes on sale in May with a price tag of just under $200,000. And, believe me, it’s worth every single red cent. I love this car, truly, madly, deeply. And not just because of its flappy doors. It’s the raw ferocity of its performance, the precision of its handling, the might of its braking. Fire it along a twisty back road and a ride on Space Mountain simply pales. It’s been developed from a blank page by Mercedes’ in-house tuning division, AMG. Power comes from AMG’s familiar 6.3-liter V8, but with a few racecarinspired tweaks that bump up the horsepower to a mighty 563—enough to rocket it to 60 mph from standstill in a mere 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed close to 200 mph. The most exhilarating Merc ever? You bet. Much of its projectile performance comes down to the car’s all-aluminum body, weighing roughly the same as a supermodel.

And speaking of bodies, the SLS’s breathtaking shape comes with just enough styling cues from the original Gullwing to acknowledge the parentage, but not too many to make it appear overly retro. I love the gaping front grille with its giant threepointed star, and those big, air-expunging side vents—both nods to the original SL. Ease yourself into the hip-hugging driver’s seat and the car seems to shrink around you. All-round vision is terrific. Taking cues from the original Gullwing, the cabin is a masterpiece of simplicity. There are just two dials set deep in a compact hooded binnacle, with a nav screen in the center of the dash and the stubbiest of shift levers. Yes, it’s a bit of a stretch to reach upward and haul down that gullwing door. Mercedes engineers did ponder making them poweroperated, but feared big electric motors would have added too much weight to the roof. That said, you quickly learn the technique of grabbing hold of the handle as you step into the car, pulling down the door as you drop into the seat. Prod the big “start” button on the center console and the AMG V8 fires up with the ferocity of Dale Junior’s Nascar stock car. It’s a rich, boomy, bellowy roar that, even at idle, will raise all those little hairs on the back of your neck. Pull back on the right-side paddle shifter controlling the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to engage “drive,” squeeze the throttle, and the SLS blasts away like it’s been released from some invisible catapult. This is simply one of the world’s most exhilarating, exciting and rewarding cars to drive. And while it’s in its element being thrashed around the racetrack, it’s also docile and tractable enough to make runs to the grocery store. Amazingly, this is just the first of a family of SLS models. Next up is a convertible roadster version, followed by an even more powerful Black Series model, followed by an all-electric version. With bigger winged doors, they might even be able to make one that flies. ◆

Two years into the project and still going strong. Márton Váró returned to Ave Maria, Florida in November to continue his work on the “Annunciation of Ave Maria”. Váró spent the summer in Carrara, Italy selecting the marble and sculpting seven of the fifteen pieces that comprise the sculpture. Váró completed the first block, the head of Mary, last spring and will be completing the final seven blocks of the sculpture at Ave Maria between now and May 2010. Váró has a studio work site set up in front of the Oratory and visitors can watch as this modern masterpiece takes shape. “There is nothing else like this anywhere in the world.” states Michael Windfeldt, the project manager, “Ave Maria is returning to the timeless tradition of recruiting the best artists in the world and asking them to create the masterpieces of the twenty first century. I believe they have succeeded. This project is truly history in the making” Váró will be returning to Carrara next summer to sculpt the two side sculptures of the Archangels Michael & Raphael. These two sculptures are seven and a half feet wide by twenty two feet high each. Together they are two thirds the size of the main sculpture of the Annunciation. W

hen golf and wine dinners began to lose their allure for Naples residents Randy Antik and Tom Everist, they put their heads together. These two successful businessmen and lifelong philanthropists recognized the major issues facing America, but felt there was a void when it came to private individuals actively pursuing solutions. The duo concluded that there is no better locale to base a foundation pursuing important social change than Southwest Florida, home to an estimated 250 retired Fortune 500 CEOs and 40 retired university presidents, and they created Searching for Solutions Institute. “There’s only so much golf you can play and wine you can drink before you begin to look for ways to give back,” says Everist, who heads a South Dakota manufacturing company and serves as the Institute’s chairman of the board. “Those involved in this effort come from different places, but arrived at the same interest of tapping into the country’s proven problem solvers to find solutions for five major issues.”

Extensive national research—including identifying ways to create a better society; studying and talking to leaders of existing idea conferences, companies and foundations; and determining that capable people are willing to help, particularly in Southwest Florida with its retired and executive community—led to the Institute’s first endeavor, February’s two-day Imagine Solutions Conference. The meeting takes inspiration from world-class thought-leader conferences, such as the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Festival, and in California, the Milken Institute Global Conference and the TED Conference. Antik, a long-time participant in such events, noted a dearth of similar thought centers on the East Coast. A discussion to change the area’s thought landscape spread from Antik and Everist to include a local board of directors, as well as a national advisory board. “This conference provides an opportunity to literally impact millions of lives,” says Antik, CEO of the Institute. “It’s all about creating knowledge that is actionable.” JANUARY 2010 67


to begin the creative process of imagining solutions that will result in a better world. I am honored to be a part of this forward-thinking endeavor.” The 600 conference attendees will hear from and mingle with noted academicians, entrepreneurs and scientists. Speaker Keith Bellows, editor in chief of National Geographic Traveler, is excited to be participating. “It will open people’s minds to a whole new way of thinking,” he says. “For me it’s like going to an intellectual Woodstock.” Post-conference activity will include seminars, salons on single-interest topics, and ongoing dissemination of information to attendees and speakers, resulting in what Institute Executive Director Lynne Groth calls networking with a purpose. “We must learn before we can act,” Groth says. “These thought leaders will not only discuss issues, but will also present one or two actionable ideas that could lead to solutions.” The goal is identification of “make-a-difference” leaders in the community who will become agents of change. Their active support could include mentoring and funding local pilot programs. “We hope to enable our audience to get things done through their own abilities,” Antik says. “We want to empower the next generation of leadership. After all, this is where we place our bets.”

Imagine Solutions speakers represent nine universities, 14 companies and 20 foundations. “The problems of the world today are both compelling and complex,” says Wilson G. Bradshaw, president of Florida Gulf Coast University and a member of the Institute’s board. “Their solutions require new ways of thinking and innovative approaches. FLYING HOME DESIGNERS TURN AIRCRAFT INTERIORS INTO LIFESTYLE SPACES. BY LOLA THÉLIN

Mauricio Cabal has designed it all—from luxurious bedrooms with spacious bathrooms to game and dining rooms, and even prayer rooms. The catch? Cabal is in the airplane business, and the rooms he designs are the interiors of private aircraft like a Boeing Business Jets 747. Flying calls to mind images of uncomfortable seats, cramped lavatories and frigid temperatures, but for Cabal’s clients, comfort is key, especially at 36,000 feet. Wi-Fi high-speed Internet, LED screen televisions, exotic woods and spacious bathrooms featuring showers are common amenities on a private plane. The motto for these industrial designers and their

clients could be “the more exotic and refined, the better.” While trends in aircraft interiors include home-like styles and amenities, design requests vary according to the owner’s desires, personality and lifestyle. As for materials, they are certainly luxurious. “We use real leathers, veneers, exotic woods, granite and marble. For fine fabric, wool and silks. There’s also high-tech materials that have been developed for aerospace exclusively, like flame-retardant acrylics and suede,” says Cabal, who owns an eponymous design firm in Parkland, which is listed on Boeing Business Jets’ website as an industrial design firm with experience designing VIP and executive interior jets. Leathers are featured throughout these planes. Designers often use embossed, matte, calfskin or suede leathers where clients gather, while full-grained and untreated leathers are used on surfaces that can be seen but not touched, such as above cabinets. Joan Simonsen-Hickok of Simonsen-Hickok Interiors in Naples says her most memorable amenity request was for a piano. “Before [the client] got into the corporate world, he was a song and dance man, and he loved playing and singing songs when he flew, so we had to incorporate a mini-grand piano.” Boeing spokeswoman Vicki L. Ray remembers touring the Boeing 747 of a royal family that included a throne. “It was an airline seat that had been adapted to look more like a throne,” she says. As for the rest of plane, Ray describes it as tasteful decorations with lots of gold tones and small religious icons. Most owner requests include modern, comfortable designs that reflect their personalities. “Our client’s design brief required a futuristic modern design [like Star Trek] … only with warmth and texture,” says Jenny Carter, president of K2 Design Group in Bonita Springs. “The fact that these ‘lounges in the sky’ are speeding people across the globe is such a statement on technology and how far we’ve advanced. Well, it just begs for modern design to wrap itself around the modern aircraft.”

Donna Cruthis, a designer for General Dynamics whose subsidiaries are worldwide, was asked to design Star Trek–style pocket doors that slide open and closed with the touch of a button. She’s also designed a jet based on the interior of the owner’s car. She had to send the upholstery technician to the car to replicate the seat for the aircraft. Simonsen-Hickok opts for soothing colors that convey a sanctuary feeling while reflecting a client’s persona. “Homes are geographically influenced. A home in Montana is rustic. A penthouse in New York is urban,” she says. “Then [the plane] is going to reflect their personalities. It says a lot about the person’s lifestyle.” While the overall look and feel of the aircraft are important, Simonsen-Hickok, Carter and Cabal all emphasize designing while maximizing the space. “Form follows function, and that’s very important,” Simonsen-Hickok says. “Everything has to be functional, yet still carefully chosen with an aesthetic consideration.” Designers must work with manufacturers to meet all Federal Aviation Administration specifications and guidelines for the engineering, design, amenities and furniture, as well as adhere to weight requirements, “pull tests” to check the attachments of furniture, and fire safety regulations for fabrics and materials.

The lavatory, which can include a makeup area, vanity and shower, often includes counters made from marble or granite. Weight constraints require designers to have the material lightweighted (cut down to a quarter-inch thick) or designers opt for a lavish veneer that weighs much less. Cabal once received a very impractical request: “A flying casino for a Russian corporation. They wanted a craps table. Can you imagine a little bit of turbulence?” he says. There also was a request for a sky roof, which Cabal did not build, and a pointing device (“a must for all Middle Eastern airplanes,” says Cabal) that tells you your position to Mecca for prayer time. Cabal admits that almost anything can be fulfilled when enough money is involved. “I don’t think that there is a limit of what can be done if you throw enough money at it, but obviously, there has to be some level of common sense. Common sense is uncommon in this group.” With all of the demands, precise details and custom work for all the furniture, cabinets and fabrics, designers can be easily overwhelmed, but they continue to have fun pushing the limit. “This is not a business where you can practice without being totally mad about airplanes, like me,” Cabal says. “Usually the crowd you find here is hooked for life on aviation.” ◆ JANUARY 2010 75

ven with years of studying magazine clippings and design books, followed by years of planning every inch of space, right down to niches for specific antiques and furniture collected during Bob and Lorraine McCashin’s 41-yearmarriage, some happy circumstances in their new Old Naples home just happened. The entertainment center by Tradewind Designs had wood ornaments. Lorraine searched online and found cabinet knobs that match the ornaments perfectly. She also found knobs for the kitchen that look like they were painted to match the kitchen tile. During one of her many trips to Marbleworks three years ago, 76 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Lorraine spied a marble sink now installed in the bathroom off the office. When she first inquired about it, the price was too much. A year later, the sink was still there, and she asked again. Even when things didn’t go exactly to plan, they worked out. Tiles that were chosen for the risers of the stairs to the guest quarters were too big. The tiles were used instead to make a surround for the outdoor fireplace. “I actually like them better there anyway,” Lorraine says. A tête-à-tête she bought in Dallas and refurbished, which was destined for the foyer, wouldn’t fit through the front door or through the French garden gate, so she met some of her new neighbors by having them help lift it over the fence.

Some of the plans changed. Originally, a fountain was to nestle next to a bear topiary they brought from their other Naples house. Lorraine found a statue of a woman that she liked better for that space. “I really love creating and finding interesting things,” she says. The ceiling fans on the lanai are like ones they saw and loved at their favorite French bistro in New York. After searching the Web, Lorraine finally found them locally at Wilson Lighting. The antiques they collected at salvage yards, flea markets and antique stores during 28 years of travel and three years in Paris for Bob’s career with Electronic Data Systems based in Dallas were often drawn into the house plans by architect Jonathan Kukk. “Every niche had something in mind before we came here,” Lorraine says. “I think everything did just what it was supposed to do.” Even the bedroom set they have had since they got married was modified to fit in the guest bedroom. “It’s so much fun to do that instead of buying new things,” Lorraine says. Since moving in, Lorraine has only had difficulty placing pieces of art. One painting is of a favorite bistro, La Goulue, that is now closed. The artist put Bob and Lorraine into the scene. “I think the art has been the most challenging,” Lorraine says. “I’ve moved things around.” In many ways, the couple’s planning paid off. In the living room, Lorraine wanted to recreate the look of beams she had seen in a cha-

pel in Dallas. Because she knew what she wanted, builder BCB Homes was able to install the beams by crane before the house was under roof. “It’s much more efficient to do it that way,” says Joe Smallwood, president and CEO of BCB Homes. “The other way to install them is to start on the ground and jack them up into a completed ceiling. They are huge, 1,000 pounds each. Lorraine had this thing dialed in on paper before we even started. The house fits on the lot so perfectly. It’s a testament to proper planning.” Planning also made the cottage energy efficient, unlike the older French homes it was modeled after. “It has super-high-performance glass and is super-high-efficiency,” Smallwood says. “The energy rating is high.” After so many years focusing on designing, building and furnishing the house, one wonders where Lorraine will put her energy now. She says she might consider helping a friend in Washington with her house. But she’s done with her own. “I love how it came out,” she says. “There’s nothing I would do differently, nothing I would change.” While clearly Lorraine was the driving force for the project, Bob says he’s happy with the result. “I love it—the front porch, walking to the beach club on Sunday nights,” he says. “It’s a real neighborhood, and that’s important for me.” ◆ 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

We ask for paper instead of plastic. We put our recycling bins out for collection. We even watched Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, all the way to the end without dozing off. (Well, almost.) But when it comes to the luxury car or truck in our driveway, it hasn’t been as easy to do our bit for the environment. But times are changing, and so are vehicles’ green profiles. Here are 10 luxury automobiles that are good for the planet—and our driving instincts.


Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid You’ll love this. A big, high-zoot S-Class Mercedes that can average more than 26 miles to the gallon on the highway and deliver the lowest CO2 emissions in the luxury segment. If this brand new S400 Hybrid were any greener, its middle name would be Kermit. Mercedes engineers went for the simple but elegant solution of slotting a skinny, lithium-ion battery-driven 20-horsepower electric motor between its new high-efficiency 3.5-liter V6 and seven-speed auto. This high-tech combo provides a healthy 295 total horses—enough to zip the big Benz to 60 mph from standstill in just 7.2 seconds. It won’t run on electric power alone, but it comes with such eco features as stop-start and regenerative braking that puts juice back in the battery when you hit the brakes. MPG: 18 city, 26 highway Price: $88,825 NI Green Rating:

BMW 755ih Hybrid BMW adopts the same “mild hybrid” technology as Mercedes’ S400 Hybrid for its upcoming ecofriendly 755ih, which is due in showrooms by this summer. Only this time, BMW sticks to its “Ultimate Driving Machine” mantra by coupling the 20-horsepower electric booster to its thundering 4.4-liter twinturbo V8 and eight-speed automatic. The resulting combo packs a whopping 455 horsepower and the kind of torque that can uproot tree stumps. Yet with its stop-start feature and regenerative braking, it should improve fuel economy by around 15 percent compared to the regular 750i. That puts it at around 25 miles per gallon on the highway. The real tragedy, however, is that BMW doesn’t offer its remarkable new 740d twin-turbo diesel stateside. Its staggering performance is matched by 40 miles per gallon economy and best-in-class CO2 emissions. Lexus LS 600h L Imagine having the on/off switch of a nuclear power plant under your right foot. One press of the gas pedal and you lunge forward like the starship Enterprise going into warp speed. This is the wondrous sensation of piloting Lexus’ flagship LS 600h L hybrid. A 240-cell pack of nickel/metal-hydrid batteries juice a big electric motor that, in turn, boosts the power of the Lexus’ big 5-liter V8. The result is a combined 438-horsepower. And all that power is delivered to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The good news is that the car drives like it has a V12 under the hood. The bad news is that the car’s fuel efficiency is ho-hum at best—20 city, 22 highway. But forget about the economy and enjoy it for what it is—arguably the world’s most luxurious car. Audi Q7 TDI I’m an enormous fan of modern “clean” diesels. Apart from offering dramatic improvements in fuel economy, range and exhaust emissions, they are true torque meisters. Come up behind a slower vehicle, step on the throttle, and they deliver the kind of low-rev thrust normally only experienced by the guy who gets shot out of the Ringling Brothers circus cannon. That’s why I love Audi’s new sevenpassenger Q7 TDI. With 406 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3-liter V6, it delivers a bigger punch than George Foreman in his pregrilling days. That, and 25-to-the-gallon real world highway economy, 600 miles between fill-ups and 25 percent fewer emissions than an equivalent gasoline motor. For that road trip to see Uncle Waldo in Des Moines, there’s no finer long-distance cruising machine. MPG: 17 city, 25 highway Price: $51,725 NI Green Rating: 84 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED


Fisker Karma Some crystal ball gazers already are predicting this could be the luxury sports sedan of the future. Looking curvier than Beyoncé in Spandex, the low-slung, Lexus LS460-sized, four-door Karma is the work of ace California-based Danish designer Henrik Fisker. Together with military contractor Quantum Technologies, he’s created a clever gas-electric hybrid that couples 5.8-second 0-60 performance with real environmental friendliness. The secret is its bank of advanced lithiumion batteries that amp up two whopping 201-horsepower electric motors. Fisker claims they’ll give the Karma a range of 50 miles on electric power only. Need more range? That’s when the GM Ecotec four-cylinder kicks in to extend the range to more than 300 miles. The highly anticipated Karma is scheduled to go on sale by next spring with prices starting at $87,900. There’s even a convertible version in the works. MPG: 100 (claimed) Range: 50 miles Price: $87,900 NI Green Rating:

Tesla Roadster Okay, I fess up. I was the first to predict that Tesla would end up out of cash and on the scrap heap before its first car reached production. Now where’s that humble pie to eat? By the middle of this year, the Silicon Valley start-up had delivered its 500th $101,500 electric Roadster and seemingly still has plenty of orders on the books. Celeb owners include George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Michael Dell and a host of others. Ecocar lovers seem to revel in its staggering supercar performance (0-60 in 3.7 seconds) coupled with a 240-plus mile range and a recharge cost of $4. I’m still no fan of its kit car-like looks and the $100-grand sticker still makes me shudder, but the little Tesla is a real success story. Me? I can’t wait for the four-door, mini-Maserati Model S sedan that’s due in 2011. MPG: 105 Range: 244 miles Price: $101,500 NI Green Rating: JANUARY 2010 85


Lincoln MKT We Americans have clung to the notion that if you want a luxury car or SUV with real power, it had to have a good ol’ V8 under the hood. The folks at Ford are now showing that a high-tech V6 can do the same job, while using a lot less gas and producing far fewer emissions. Its new 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that’s powering the surprisingly sexy Lincoln MKT seven-seat, all-wheel drive crossover, does a fine job of delivering V8 thrust but with 22-to-the-gallon highway economy. The beauty of the EcoBoost is that all 350 pound-feet of torque is delivered from just 3,500 rpm, which means awesome passing power and slingshot acceleration out of a tight curve. MPG: 16 city, 22 highway Price: from $49,995 NI Green Rating:

Jaguar XJ With its gorgeous, coupe-like styling, panoramic glass roof and Bentleyesque interior, Jaguar’s all-new 2010 XJ is going to be the gotta-have luxury sedan when it lands in showrooms early this year. But behind all the style and elegance is an impressive sustainability story. For example, its complete body is made from lightweight aluminum that makes the car lighter and more fuel efficient. With its 5-liter naturally aspirated V8, it should average an excellent 26 to the gallon on the highway. Also, more than 50 percent of the body structure is made from recycled aluminum. That’s the equivalent of 9,000 aluminum Coke cans. And the cool thing about recycled aluminum is that if it takes 100 percent of energy to create new sheet aluminum, only 5 percent is required to recycle waste into sheet metal again. Hard to believe, but five minutes behind the wheel of BMW’s latest 3-series—the 335d—will have you, too, singing the praises of this hard-charging oil-burner. The reason? Mid-range torque. This is the instant-on thrust you get when you floor the throttle to pass that lumbering 18wheeler on a tight two-lane. Cadillac Escalade Hybrid When gas prices spiraled past $4 a gallon, nothing symbolized automotive gas-hog excess more than Cadillac’s lardy Escalade SUV. Trouble is, if you love to transport seven in the lap of luxury and maybe haul a boat at the same time, there’s little to match the leather-lined comfort of an Escalade. So to project a more ecofriendly image, and even gain a nod of acceptance from the Prius crowd, the Escalade Hybrid makes sense. Mating a heavy-duty 300-volt electric motor to a 6-liter V8 results in 20-to-the-gallon economy in the EPA’s city cycle, which is a 50-percent improvement over the regular gas version. You also should see 21 to the gallon on the highway. Probably more important, however, are the nine badges and decals on the body proclaiming the Escalade’s hybrid status. One could compare architect Stephen Hruby and electrician Bernie Simmonds to alternating current and direct current. Hruby wears Prada suits and drives a Porsche. Bernie Simmonds, founder and president of E.B. Simmonds Electrical Inc., wears jeans and cowboy boots and prefers a Harley-Davidson. that is both current and ready for growth for Simmonds’ 28-year-old company, which specializes in commercial, industrial and public electrical utility systems. In October, the company moved to the new 30,000square-foot complex made up of a three-story office building plus a combined warehouse, shop and storage building. Simmonds has 20 employees including his wife, Lyne (pronounced “Lean”), who serves as CFO and company secretary. To Simmonds, it was more than just a building. “I spend by far more time here than at home,” he says. “I like my business, my job, and now I like the place where I work." When Hruby redesigned an office on Fifth Avenue South in 1998 for Architects Unlimited, he hired Simmonds. “His ideas caught my eye,” Simmonds says. “It’s the office I envisioned having one day.” In 2000, Simmonds bought the property for the new building. In mid-2004, the design began, and site work was under way in late 2007.


Hruby had to make Simmonds’ dreams functional. “His idea was an elevator with stairs wrapped around it, like something Humphrey Bogart would get out of,” Hruby says. “I said, ‘That’s nice, but it doesn’t meet code.’” The solution was a glass elevator in a central atrium that you can walk all the way around. “It really freaked out the elevator people,” Simmonds says. “They wanted a 40-horsepower motor. I wanted a 25-horsepower motor so it would go as slowly as possible. Every time you look in a different direction, you enjoy the stonework.” The next challenge was making the required fire stairs visually interesting, instead of a typical boxed-in stairwell. The poured concrete steps are cantilevered off a central pillar, with a glass wall letting in light. “We wanted the stairway to be like a sculpture,” Simmonds says. Another challenge was the planned heliport on the roof of the warehouse building. “One day I want to be

a helicopter pilot,” Simmonds says. “Beyond that, our business has to do with disasters and recovery. A helicopter could one day be part of the business.” Although the area is zoned to allow heliports, the plan was rejected by the county until Simmonds’ lawyers were able to write an ordinance that would set guidelines for the first heliport in Collier County. Other ideas confounded contractors and suppliers. The exposed ceiling beams on the third floor are rusty and still have the chalk numbers that identified them in the yard. “The contractor asked us two or three times over, ‘Is this the way you wanted this?’” Hruby says. While the building showcases the business, it also reflects Simmonds’ non-business passions. Hunting trophies and favorite artwork hang throughout. “This building epitomizes Bernie; it has a rough side, but it’s very refined,” Hruby says. “He’ll hunt bear, but he appreciates art. There’s the ashlar limestone wall and mahogany doors—the refined and rustic play off each other.” ◆ JANUARY 2010 127

Glass artist Dale Chihuly is coming back to Naples, but in truth, he never left. Since Chihuly’s work was one of the first exhibitions at the Naples Museum of art in November 2000, three of his works in the museum’s permanent collection have become iconic symbols of the museum. The 20-foot-tall Red Chandelier in the dome of the museum is a photo favorite, and many have dined beneath its spirals or marveled at its sinuous 1,200 individual pieces, weighing about 2,000 pounds. Inside the museum, the lobby is highlighted by a three-story-high blown-glass Chihuly Icicle Chandelier, reminding Floridians of the aesthetic potential of ice with its impressive blue and white icicles highlighted by a skylight in the stairway. The Persian Ceiling on the third floor of the museum was donated by Patty and Jay Baker, whose names were added to the museum in 2008 when they donated $10 million. The colorful glass bowls and shapes float overhead and give the viewer the feeling of being under the sea. The museum opened with the exhibition Reflections of Chihuly in November 2000, and a visit by the artist himself inaugurated the museum. In celebration of the museum’s tenth anniversary, Chihuly will return January 30 for a lecture about his work and the exhibition, Chihuly: Recent Work, on display January 23-April 25. COLLECTOR William Meek has been quietly bolstering the art oomph of Naples for decades. This month, the gallery he heads, the Harmon-Meek Gallery, celebrates its forty-sixth year since being founded by Foster Harmon in 1964. For decades, Meek opened his gallery to schoolchildren, and paid for buses to transport them to experience art until the early 2000s. He worked with artists the gallery has represented to create permanent collections at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, before the Naples Museum of Art was built 10 years ago, and at the von Liebig Center for the Arts. Now he is spearheading efforts to make sure the Children’s Museum of Naples, scheduled to open in late 2010, has a permanent col-

lection of art to exhibit. A collection of paintings and sculptures, arranged through Meek and donated by artists, estates of artists and collectors, will depict “Children as a Subject in American Art.” Eventually, Meek would like to include artwork that depicts animals. The rotating exhibit of two pieces in the collection at the museum will include an interactive television monitor where children can learn about the art and artist. This month, Harmon-Meek Gallery will provide a peek at the museum’s art collection, along with part of the 2,000-object collection of native masks and objects

from around the world donated to the museum by Dr. Ernestine A. O’Connell of Venice, which will be used by the museum in its educational programming. None of the pieces being shown in the Children’s Museum exhibit will be for sale. “We want to build excitement and awareness for the museum,” Barbara Meek says. The exhibition will be at the gallery January 3-15. The gallery plans to present an exhibition January 17-30 of work by Jon Corbino, the first artist to exhibit at the Harmon Gallery when it first opened. Dog behavior expert Patricia McConnell (above) will be in Naples January 6 and 7 to help demystify Fido’s quirks at two events to benefit The Brody Project for Animal Assisted Therapy. HOPE FLOATS A pair of young filmmakers, Ira Mowen and Luca Antonucci, came up with a simple idea that would create a visual “travelogue” of sorts, featuring some of the world’s great places, like New York’s Central Park and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The artists attach a video camera to 40 red helium balloons, release them from a notable site, then retrieve them and download the images. The resulting footage is shared online with fans around the globe. The project has been covered by CNN and other networks, and garnered some awards. Mowen and Antonucci have chosen Naples as the site for another installment of the Balloon Tour. Sponsored by Third Street South, the days leading up to the Balloon Release January 10 will include activities to benefit Freedom Waters Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides boating and other marine activities to children with serious illnesses, disabilities, or special needs. Children and families of Freedom Waters will gather at the Naples Pier on release day to watch as the balloons take off. Red balloons will grace the fronts of Third Street merchants and Honor Cards will be available for purchase January 5–8. The cards will have space for the name of giver and an honoree; proceeds go toward Freedom Waters’ major fundraiser, Painting My Tomorrow, at the Philharmonic February 14. YOUNG AT HEART BY CHRISTINA WELLS

Anne Welsh McNulty believes in being hands-on when it comes to charitable giving. “I want to know the people running the organization,” she says. “I want to understand not only that their heart is in the right place, but that they are driven, competent, focused on outcomes and best practices, and really doing the best possible job for clients.” McNulty and her family support a wide array of charitable endeavors locally, nationally and globally through the John P. and Anne Welsh McNulty Foundation. She serves as the 2010 grant committee chair for the Naples Children & Education Foundation, the charitable arm of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. She’s currently working on the foundation’s newly launched behavioral health initiative, which seeks to erase the stigma associated with mental illness, extend the continuum of mental health care, and establish more effective links between pediatricians and other providers of physical and psychiatric care. McNulty is involved with the Aspen Institute and its programs for young leaders around the world. Her work with the organization led to creation in 2008 of the John P. McNulty Prize, which honors the memory of her late husband and seeks to recognize and celebrate young leaders and their efforts to address the foremost social, economic and political challenges of our time. The award is juried by an international panel comprised of prominent entrepreneurs, academics, philanthropic leaders and public figures, including Madeleine Albright and Bill Gates Sr. “John was a very charismatic leader,” says McNulty of her spouse, who died suddenly in 2005 and was a senior partner at Goldman Sachs. “He pushed people, especially the young people working with him, to achieve excellence and expand their vision.” The McNultys launched another program in John’s honor, the McNulty Scholars Program, at his alma mater, St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, providing scholarships, mentoring, research and professional development for women in math and science. “John and I were so lucky to be in the financial sector during the long boom era, and we set up our focused fashion,” she says. “I am carrying on the vision we shared.” ◆
