ADVERTISMENT

From the Publisher

If it weren’t for the post-Christmas dent in my wallet, I would not believe January is here again. As I close the door on 2013, it is bittersweet. It was a year that saw the sorrowful passing of our founder, Ronald J. Woods. While Ron was always proud of our flagship publications— Naples Illustrated, Palm Beach Illustrated and Weddings Illustrated—he knew the intensity of the 2013 growth of the company’s Custom Publishing Division was a true nod to our success. This year we are proud to introduce Salut!, the magazine of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. This year’s chairs, Adria Starkey, Linda Richards Malone and Anne Welsh McNulty, agreed with our vision to help get the word out about the festival and the charitable organization it benefits, the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), in the form of a custom publication. This informative magazine shares the 13-year history of the festival, highlights how the proceeds help the children of Collier County, touts the volunteers who make it happen, and introduces this year’s vintners and chefs. Salut! will be available at all festival events. As publisher, I have the privilege of being surrounded by charitable organizations and the philanthropic people who sustain them. In my efforts to ascertain additional knowledge of what each organization does for this community, one at the top of the list is the NCEF. While it may not be as well known as its major fundraising event, the Naples Winter Wine Festival, the impact it has had on our community is enormous. More than $110 million has been donated to help underprivileged children in our area since 2001 through the numerous children’s charities that benefit in some way by the generosity of the NCEF’s gifts. In keeping with Ron’s special compassion for children and his desire to always give back, Naples Illustrated is also proud to be a sponsor of the 2014 NCEF Naples Winter Wine Festival so that we too can share the vision of making a profound and sustaining difference in the lives of children in Collier County. It’s all for the kids!

When shopping at nonprofits, I was dazzled by Safari: A Photicular Book, Available at the Naples Zoo. the book uses scanimation technology to make animals appear to leap across the pages in 3-D! For more charitable finds, turn to page 52. 26

As we start a new year, many of us will make a pledge to turn a new leaf, to improve something—whether it’s our health, relationships, business or the world we live in. Wanting to leave the world a better place is part of what philanthropy is all about, and it’s what we’re focusing on in this issue. The Naples community is long known for its generosity, with one of the most shining examples being the Naples Winter Wine Festival, which gets under way later this month. Turn to page 98 to learn how the seeds of such a successful fundraising event were planted more than a decade ago. Looking to the future, we also spotlight a handful of young Neapolitans who are among the next generation of community leaders. Find out what drives their passion for giving back in “Just Cause,” where you’ll find their profiles starting on page 68. Of course, there are countless ways to support the community and the nonprofits whose causes you believe in. We thought we would make it easy for you to help with “Good Will Shopping” on page 52, which features more than a dozen ways to support a charity while shopping. During this month of resolutions, you may also be attempting to fine-tune what you’re going to spend time on this year, in an effort to focus on what you truly enjoy. If curling up with a great novel is a favorite pastime, you won’t want to miss Sue Monk Kidd’s latest work, The Invention of Wings. On page 84, the award-winning novelist, who makes her home on the Paradise Coast, shares insight on her journey as a writer, as well as her unwavering determination to embrace every day with courage, take risks and dare big. The characters in her novels are just as inspiring. And we hope you will be inspired when you read her story. Finally, sports fans are champing at the bit for the upcoming Super Bowl, as well as all the fun festivities that come with the famed sporting event. This year, we put a gourmet twist on the tailgate, and you can find all the delicious details by turning to page 38. Cheers to a happy, healthy new year.

New Year, Healthy Start: I’m not usually a huge fan of protein powders, but after discovering Reserveage Organics Grass-Fed Whey Protein (Vanilla) at Nature’s Garden in Naples, I’m hooked. It’s low carb, packs 20 grams of protein and tastes delicious in a blender with organic milk, ice cubes and just a sprinkling of frozen blueberries.

recipe

As the NFL playoffs heat up into a crescendo of super proportions— ahem, Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2—we want to dish up a recipe to make that tailgate, or couch-gate, a hit. When it comes to a simple yet delicious snack, nothing beats a deviled egg. Here, we’re serving a spicy number that’s sure to bring the cheers. Enjoy.

t

Sriracha Deviled Eggs 12 large free-range eggs 1/3 cup mayonnaise 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 4 teaspoons Sriracha hot sauce 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar Cilantro, finely chopped Kosher salt Fresh ground pepper Hard-boil the eggs; cool, peel and halve them. Carefully remove the yolks, reserving the whites for later. To mash the egg yolks, set a sieve over a bowl and gently push the yolks through with a fork. This will ensure an even, fluffy egg-yolk paste. Mix in mayo, Sriracha sauce, mustard, vinegar and cilantro. Season with salt and pepper to taste; combine until even and smooth. Add mixture into a Zip-Loc bag with a half-inch cut on one corner to allow piping. Evenly pipe the yolk mixture into the reserved egg white halves. Top with a pinch of cilantro. For more recipes, check out our guide to a DIY deviled egg bar at naplesillustrated.com/DeviledEgg Bar. Then, turn to page 37 for our take on gourmet tailgating, featuring an irresistible menu. 28

NI: What are you looking forward to in Naples? DKG: It will be wonderful to be there in the middle of February! And I’d love to get to a Red Sox spring training game, especially after our World Series win. Did you think as you worked on the book it would make for a riveting movie? During the time I was with Steven Spielberg during the Lincoln movie, we talked about what I was doing on Teddy and Taft. He had seen manuscript pages. It’s great to think of working with that team of people again. When you’re writing you’re much more solitary. So it’s just such an extraordinary experience to be part of that group. Writing the new book, did thoughts of how it could be a blockbuster film have an effect? Once Lincoln was made, I began to think a little bit visually about what makes a scene as opposed to just the written word. I’m not sure it changed anything I was writing, except when I was working on

Author, historian, TV commentator and master storyteller. the 1912 Republican Convention. It’s so dramatic— policemen, people are fighting each other, knocking each other down, they’re yelling and booing— then I knew, oooh, this would make a good scene. It does become a little part of your writing. How can journalists today get the public engaged as they did during the Progressive era? The key always is, as [publisher] S. S. McClure said and that I believe strongly, the story is the thing. That’s what moves people. It’s not just abstract facts, or constant yelling back and forth. McClure said, “There’s no one left but all of us,” meaning the public has to be involved in what’s happening in Washington, or nothing will get done. We’re very much at that stage now.

ERIC LEVIN

Doris Kearns Goodwin’s latest book The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism (Simon & Schuster, 2013) provides a riveting account of the relationship between the nation’s 26th and 27th presidents and the remarkable times during which they served. A preemptive deal for movie rights was inked by DreamWorks, the studio behind the Steven Spielberg-directed film Lincoln, inspired by Goodwin’s Team of Rivals. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author will captivate attendees at The League Club’s luncheon February 7 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. (theleagueclub.org) —Kat Smith

Founded in 1986, The Club brings together Naples women who are or have been members of a Junior League to socialize and seek ways to support our community. Proceeds from this luncheon, titled “Doris Kearns Goodwin, Inspiration & Anecdotes Presented by IberiaBank,” will benefit the club’s Community Trust Fund, which has made charitable grants totaling more than $2.7 million over the past 27 years to numerous deserving nonprofits that help local children, families and others in need.

A Tailgate Touchdown Menu by Chef Brian Roland, Crave Culinaire Styling by Margaret Short, Margaret Events Photography by Vanessa Rogers

Are you ready for some football? With Super Bowl XLVIII just a little more than a month away, fans are gearing up for the party that goes with it. If you can’t make it to the big game, you can still indulge in a tailgate-inspired soiree of your own. We’re helping with some inspiration. Chef Brian Roland of Crave Culinaire crafted a menu that elevates the tailgate with a gourmet twist. Guests can kick off in style with bacon-caramel popcorn and heirloom beet and goat cheese verrine. Those who prefer lighter fare on game day can nibble on cucumber-tuna tartare puffs with tequila-avocado-lime mousse. Fans with heartier appetites can indulge in pineapple-soy braised pork belly sliders and prosciutto, fig and Gorgonzola flatbread pizzas. 38

Rolls-Royce provided by Naples Luxury Imports

A deliciously chilly ending rounds out the meal, featuring Pinot Noir-wild berry and peach popsicles topped with lemon crème fraîche and micro basil, served along with macarons and fresh berries. The elegant, relaxed setting was styled by Margaret Short, owner of Margaret Events in Naples. The scene features a 2013 Rolls-Royce Ghost as the backdrop amid a plush arrangement of pillows in shades of tangerine and silvery grey, complemented by casual groupings of sunburst tulips. A football ready for tossing a few spirals and a bottle of vintage bubbly complete the picture of a winning day. —Teri Evans

Along the Beach in Naples, Emile A. Gruppé, gift to the NAA Collection by Mr. and Mrs. Warren Ajemian

Waddy Thompson

A beautiful evening at Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

Teens Making a Difference Most high school students spend their free time on social networks, attending sporting events and keeping up with the latest fashion trends. Two local teens have decided to close their laptops and closet doors to create something special for others in the Naples community. Olivia Wetzel and Cloe Feldman, both 16-year-old juniors at Barron Collier

Milestones

A sixtieth anniversary in Naples is worth noting. In 2014, two venerable institutions are celebrating six decades and looking ahead to bright futures. As part of its sixtieth celebration, the Naples Art Association presents a special exhibit titled “Diamonds: The Naples Art Association’s Collection” in the round galleries and lobby at The von Liebig Art Center, January 18-March 1, with works from the NAA’s collection of 200 mid to late twentieth-century paintings, sculpture, photography and mixed media pieces. This special display will document the legacy of the forward-thinking artists who established the city as a vital arts community. (naplesart.org) Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary observes its sixtieth with “Celebrating the Roots of Corkscrew,” a yearlong series of events focusing on the history of the largest remaining old-growth bald cypress forest in the world. Every month, Corkscrew will spotlight a landmark cypress tree selected by Sanctuary Director Jason Lauritsen. Each is distinguished by a unique characteristic (fattest, tallest, most popular animal hangout), location, or a special role within the habitat. The dozen trees will be commemorated on T-shirts, mugs and banners. While visitors are drawn to Corkscrew by the diverse fauna, the Sanctuary staff aims to highlight the majesty of its 700-year-old trees, which were saved from deforestation by disparate environmental groups and local citizens who pooled funds to purchase the land from Collier Enterprises and Cypress Tidewater Company. To get the community even more involved, Corkscrew is calling for mementos, photos, postcards, souvenirs and other objects collected over the years by visitors to create an exhibit with the archives and, ultimately, establish a museum. (corkscrew.audubon.org)

NEW IN TOWN Lilly Pulitzer’s iconic fashion house has established a retail store in Waterside Shops, marking the late designer’s first standalone retail boutique in Southwest Florida … Meanwhile, downtown Naples welcomes a new gem to its shopping district. Kristoff Jewelers, which opened on the corner of Fifth Avenue South and Park Street, specializes in large and rare diamonds, custom-designed jewelry, estate pieces and fine timepieces.

Cloe Feldman, Olivia Wetzel

High School, started a club in September with a charitable mission, inspiring teenagers to give back to the community in more ways than one. “We’ve always loved helping other people and wanted to get more involved in the community,” say the founders. Teens for a Cause will introduce students to multiple local nonprofits, including Champions For Learning (The Education Foundation), Habitat for Humanity and The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. The club creates the opportunity for students to complete their community service hours for graduation by organizing different volunteer efforts throughout the Naples area. “We are trying to show the community that as teens, we too can make a difference,” says Olivia. When the club isn’t holding special-event meetings with guest speakers from local charities, the members are busy making children’s blankets and pillows for donation. With compassion and perseverance, Teens for a Cause is paving the way for young adults to start giving back. —Jenna Choate

Modern Miracles fountain of youth Chanel newest star on the antiaging stage is Le Lift ($165), an anti-wrinkle firming cream whose active ingredient comes from the edulis plant. Available in three textures, Le Lift is a flawless combination of science and beauty. (Saks Fifth Avenue, Naples)

Our favorite delicacy is now served on the vanity table. The Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask ($300) by La Prairie harnesses the powers of caviar extracts to moisturize and improve skin’s firmness. Escape Tuscan Holiday

Revel and relax like a movie star at the five-star Castello di Casole. By ROBERT RAGAINI

057-Escape-0114.indd 57

With a whoosh of flame, our hot-air balloon rises above the rooftops of the Castello di Casole boutique resort and private residence club. Within the vast view of the rolling Tuscan landscape, the beauty of the golden-hued castle on the highest hilltop dominates the scene. Other elements we spy on our tour (arranged by the resort) that juxtapose old with new are the new infinity pool in its garden setting, perfect rows of grapevines and farmhouses dotting the estate, where 200 NAPLESillustrated.com | JANUARY 2014

years ago the occupants tilled the soil. The farmhouses have been lavishly renovated, and purchased by members of the Timber Resorts Residence Club which owns the estate. The private homes are available for rentals. At the heart of the five-star Tuscan resort is the castle itself, with roots dating back to the year 998. Among the castle’s interesting inhabitants during its thousand-year history was aristocratic film director Luchino Visconti (1969’s The Damned and 1971’s Death in Venice), who owned what is now the main hotel villa of the castle compound in the 1960s. In those days, Visconti hosted a glittering array of Hollywood royalty, including Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. When Colorado-based Timbers Resorts bought it in 2005, the intent, according to CEO David Burden, was “to bring a piece of history alive.” Although only one tower remains of the original tenth-century castle, old stones, terracotta tiles and reclaimed wood have been used in the recent restoration. The renovated 4,200-acre property opened last year with 41 suites in the manor house and 28 villas created from the farmhouse ruins. These are restored and finished in Tuscan style with luxurious modern amenities. “We combined the new with the old,” says Timbers Re-

sorts Design Manager Alison Moore. “The bathrooms use a modern, Italian approach with a lot of glass and mosaics. They’re really sensational.” The Castello is a boutique hotel with terraces, a pool, a fitness center and a spa inspired by the region’s fragrances and natural approach to diet and exercise. Among the most popular accommodations are in the Oliveto Suites, located in new buildings located among lush grapevines and olive trees. Distinctly nonrustic, they are contemporary and stylish, but “guests feel the life of the farm, of the vineyards,” says Silvia Anichini, villa operations manager. Another vineyard element can be found under the vaulted ceilings of the old wine caves, which house the 5,400-square-foot Essere Spa. A favorite treatment is the Sacred Nature Ritual, 110 minutes of pure indulgence using olive oil infused with orange and cinnamon from the groves on the estate. When not in the mood for relaxing, guests find many activities to enjoy. Guests can take authentic cooking, art and language classes, attend outdoor concerts, tour vineyards, and bike, hike, walk and ride horseback on the extensive trail network. Sportsmen and women can hunt cinghiale, wild boar, with game wardens leading the hunt. If hunting truffles is more your style, in season locals and visitors follow guides under oaks and poplars in search of the elusive mushroom. For the cooks among us, kitchens in private villas are dream creations rendered in ochre and slate, vintage antiques, marble sinks and the latest pasta makers and chef’s ovens. Hand-painted Gianfranco Ballerini refrigerators can be stocked in advance by the staff. In Tuscany, of course, food is front and center. Sublime flavor is the mission within Chef Daniele Sera’s fine dining restaurant, Tosca. Under Murano glass chandeliers surrounded by restored stone walls, dine

on the chef’s inspired creations, including mackerel and clams with organic lemons, risotto with saffron and braised veal shank and millefeuille with wild strawberries. More casual dining is equally delicious at Pazzia, where homemade pastas, gelati and espresso are overshadowed only by the hand-tossed pizza. During the day, excursions can be arranged to San Gimignano and Monteriggioni, known for their Renaissance towers. And a guided trip to Florence may include not only the renowned museums, but access

to exclusive boutiques producing one-of-a-kind items as well. Winery tours in the area are a must, as Tuscany is home to the Sangiovese grape, used in producing Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Super Tuscans. Bar Visconti, named for the movie director, is the spot for a convivial and sophisticated evening. The bar overlooks the dining terrace and pool area and features a wall fresco by a Tuscan artist. The atmosphere was designed to recall those lively parties Count Visconti was famous for hosting. A millennium in the making, Castello di Casole captures the heart and soul of Tuscany and combines it with the best modern comfort. (castellodicasole.com) ÂŤ

A Ghostly Wraith Rolls-Royce’s dramatic new Wraith coupé combines head-spinning style with outrageous performance. By Howard Walker Rolls-Royce does spooky exceedingly well. Just the whisper of the word “Phantom” can send an icy shiver down the backs of any prospective buyer. Then again, that frosty chill is more likely to come from the prospect of penning a check for the Phantom’s $400,000 asking price. The spooky nomenclature continues with the latest Ghost sedan. With so many hauntingly badged models, maybe there should have been a Stephen King edition along the way. And now comes the Wraith, Rolls-Royce’s exquisite new twodoor coupé, the most powerful and dynamic car in the company’s storied history. The Wraith name actually dates back to the late 1930s, when it was worn by a stately and upright Rolls with flowing fenders and huge stand-alone headlights. The definition of the word, according to Merriam-Webster, is “the exact likeness of a living person seen usually just before death as an apparition.” While this new Wraith is closely related to the Ghost sedan, its character is very different. Although you could never describe it as a sports car—at around 5,400 pounds, it’s too much of a porker for that— there’s an urgency and agility here that will surprise and delight the enthusiast driver. 62

From a design perspective, it’s also much more than simply a two-door version of the Ghost. There’s huge visual drama in the way the roof cascades down to the car’s rear bumper like an Aspen ski slope. The car is imposing but not exactly beautiful. There’s something a little awkward and ungainly about the angle of the rear window and the thickness of the rear roof pillars. Adding two-tone paint—a $7,750 addition to the car’s $284,900 base price—only seems to heighten the awkwardness. There are no complaints when you ease open one of those massive rear-hinged coach doors (never call them suicide doors) and slide into the driver’s seat. The cabin of this new Wraith simply defines magnificence. Take the woodwork. It’s a type of Brazilian rosewood; Rolls-Royce calls it Canadel after the house in the South of France where founder Henry Royce used to spend his winters. The grain of the veneer is actually canted rearwards at 55 degrees, giving an arrow-like effect that runs through the cabin. You have to see it to believe it. Make no mistake: The Wraith is an accommodating four-seater with plenty of legroom, kneeroom and headroom for those in the back. Those huge doors also make getting into the individual rear seats surprisingly easy.

POWER FILE Price: From $284,900 Engine: 6.6-liter turbo V-12 MAX POWER: 624 hp MAX TORQUE: 590 pound-feet Transmission: 8-speed auto 0-60 mph: 4.6 seconds Top speed: 155 mph (limited) Length/width: 207/76.5 inches Weight: 5,380 pounds Why we love it: Because it’s the

most powerful, most dynamic and most fun to drive Rolls-Royce ever.

Once there, you’ll count the minutes until sundown. That’s when the driver can switch on the Wraith’s unique Starlight headlining. This $13,000 option features a perforated leather roof panel illuminated by 1,340 fiber-optic lights that twinkle like a starry night sky. Because each of the fiber optics is hand-woven, no two Starlight roofs twinkle the same. The folks at Rolls-Royce are happy to tell stories of owners requesting a galaxy of stars to precisely reflect the night sky on the very day they were born. Chances are, however, drivers won’t have much time to gaze upwards at twinkling roofliners because they’ll be having way too much fun piloting this automotive powerhouse. Under that pool-table-long hood resides a 6.6-liter, twin-turbo

V-12 that can unleash an insane 624 hp, which is 61 hp more than in the Ghost. Pedal to the floor, the Wraith is capable of scything from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and not quitting until the speedo is kissing the 155-mph mark. For a car that tips the scales at around 2.7 tons, the Wraith feels devastatingly quick. But unlike every previous Rolls-Royce, it boasts of its performance credentials with a deep, barrel-chested soundtrack like the one heard at NASCAR. Although it is definitely not a sports coupe—the car is too big and heavy for that—it does feel remarkably nimble and light-footed through the curves, thanks to its laser-precise steering and stiffer suspension. A Rolls-Royce that’s a blast to drive? Now that’s very spooky. «

Just Cause The Naples community has long been famously generous, and the caring nature of the city’s elders flourishes in the next generation, too. Meet five young Neapolitans who inspire us with caring, thoughtful efforts for deserving causes. A common thread in their stories: All say they were influenced by the good example set by their parents or grandparents. By Kat Smith | Photography by Vanessa Rogers 68

A Naples resident since moving from New England in 2002 with her husband, Adam, Yvonne Bourk, 37, joined the leadership committee for PACE Center for Girls Collier when the organization was looking to host its inaugural Love That Dress! event. Bourk, a wealth advisor and vice president with BB&T Wealth, says she was attracted to the energy and mission of PACE, which focuses on the unique potential of girls and young women, and seeks to provide each an opportunity to find her voice and achieve her potential. “How can you not want to be involved with such a great cause!” Bourk says. The mother of two (Chloe, 6, and Levi, 4) continues to work on behalf of PACE and others. “Aha” moment: It was participating in Love That Dress! for PACE Center for Girls. To observe the dialogue between a professional woman and a PACE girl is truly inspiring. You may get involved with the idea that you are going to change a young girl’s life, but the life you change may very well be your own. Wisdom to share with young people: Create a vision based on your specific gifts, talents and tools. Find a cause you are passionate about and truly understand how you would like to be utilized. Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible. Words to live by: “Begin with the end in mind.” This omits the noise and distractions of a set goal and can be applied to many facets of life. Latest initiatives: l Women Tomorrow, an event that engaged young women in the Champions for Learning's Take Stock in Children Scholarship & Mentoring Program by creating real-world experiences with leading women in the community. l An initiative with the Exotic Owners Club of Southwest Florida to jointly present Wish Drive 2013, a charity event for Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida at Mercato.

Born Philanthropist Allison Durian was born and raised in Naples, where her family has lived for more than 40 years. The 32-year-old returned to her hometown after college and has been active in the community ever since. When not working at her job in exhibitions and inventory control for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Durian devotes her time to a number of local programs. “Philanthropy for me has always been something I just do; it is a part of who I am,” she says. Earliest philanthropic effort: I recognized a need at my high school for a program that encouraged philanthropy and volunteering within our community. I started a Philanthropy Club to get other students involved in various projects around town, starting with Habitat for Humanity and St. Matthew’s House. Memorable moments: Learning how many people are benefiting from our David Lawrence Center group’s efforts, meeting grateful scholarship recipients, and high-fiving my Girls on the Run running buddy after a great practice are all great rewards for the time and energy spent. Wisdom to share with young people: Think outside of yourself. Sometimes helping others only takes a minute, but you leave a lasting impression on them by the kindness that you have shown. Words to live by: “Do justice. Love kindness. Walk humbly.” Latest initiatives: l The David Lawrence Center Young Executives, a group whose primary goal is to help with the ongoing improvements for the Center’s Immokalee campus, as well as create a fund that can provide financial assistance for those who are unable to pay for the services. l The Naples Junior Women’s’ Club and its scholarship committee. l Girls on the Run, an emerging program here in Naples that teaches young women the importance of positive thinking and staying active.

Animal Instinct Rhode Island native Charles B. King, 39, followed his parents to Naples about a decade ago after having vacationed in the area for years. As a child, King was influenced by his grandparents’ kindness to stray neighborhood dogs, as his grandmother would prepare meals for them every day, “and by prepare, I mean cook,” says King, now an attorney. “At any given time, my grandparents would have two or three formerly stray dogs living in their house as pets.” Today he shares his home with two pups of his own. “Edith and McGruff are shelter dogs. I failed at fostering both dogs in that I refused to return the animals,” he says. Earliest philanthropic effort: I spent a day at a soup kitchen just before Thanksgiving. I remember peeling butternut squash for eight hours, and how difficult it was afterwards to get the orange color out of my hands. The staff and patrons were so thankful for the effort. To me, it was not a big deal, but their appreciation for my small sacrifice was overwhelming. Memorable moment: My most rewarding week was spent outside New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I worked with other volunteers in the Best Friends Animal Society, rescuing abandoned animals from the flooded areas. A vacant field served as our animal shelter and campground. The conditions were horrendous, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. It opened my eyes to how productive I can be when focused on a challenge. Wisdom to share with young people: Explore volunteer opportunities early in life. It may take some time to discover what you are most passionate about. Everyone should have a cause. Identify the problems you see in society and those who need support, then work to make a difference. Even if you do not have time to spend hours volunteering, you can show your support by funding others who are working to make that difference. Words to live by: “Root for the underdogs.” (Pun intended.) Honors for charity work: My rewards take the form of dog licks. Latest initiatives: Board member and Canine Coach volunteer for the Humane Society Naples. I am proud to be part of a dedicated volunteer crew who generously give up their time every day to improve the animals’ lives. Also, my law practice involves a large amount of will and trust drafting, so I offer my services when a potential donor contacts the society with questions or legal needs.

GOAL-ORIENTED After graduating from Syracuse University in the Northeast, Sandra Edwards, 37, decided to move to a warmer climate 12 years ago. She made Naples her home, where she lives with her husband, Curt. As the youngest of four girls, she quickly became influenced by her older sisters, and at a young age, her parents encouraged them to participate in their church to help the less fortunate. “I learned how even the smallest contribution through bake sales, craft fairs and holiday bazaars can have a lasting impact on another individual,” says Edwards, who is an occupational therapist at Moorings Park. “Aha” moment: Last year, I had the privilege of attending Meet the Kids Day, with the Naples Children & Education Foundation [NCEF]. I witnessed children sharing stories of how their lives have benefited from the money raised by the foundation. It was amazing to see how a new pair of eyeglasses, an otherwise ordinary object, could renew a child’s interest in school and life at home. Memorable moment: This year, Friends of the Foundation is on target to raise $100,000! This proves to me that even a grass-roots project can succeed. Our entire committee is dedicated to meeting the goals established from the beginning and we have maintained our focus on the children. Wisdom to share with young people: It’s easy to sit back and say, “Maybe next year will be the year I start to give back to the community.” It’s important to be present and get out there to meet like-minded people with a passion for helping others. I can promise one thing—that getting behind something you believe is more rewarding than choosing to passively observe the world around you. Words to live by: “Embrace your passion when you find it.” Latest initiatives: Committee member and co-chair with Brandie LaFond of the Friends of the Foundation supporting the NCEF [which founded the Naples Winter Wine Festival]. The dynamic group of professionals seeks to bring awareness of the need to help local underprivileged children. The core of our mission is to serve the community through seven long-term initiatives—oral health, early childhood learning, health care, out of school, mental health, vision and childhood hunger.

Jumping in Neapolitans are well acquainted with the culinary and civic contributions of Tony Ridgway, now in his forty-third season as a Naples restaurateur. Now on the local scene is his daughter, Caroline Ridgway, 33. The third-generation, full-time Neapolitan moved back to Naples in 2012 after living in Philadelphia for college, law school and a job in policy and government affairs in health care. She says, “When I moved back to Naples, it was never a question that I would find ways to contribute, and I am lucky to have found a couple of really terrific organizations to jump in with right away.” Ridgway now works in compliance and business development for HFI LLC, a local privately held investment portfolio. Earliest philanthropic effort: One of the earlier sustained volunteer experiences I had was at the Immokalee Horse Trials [which raised money to benefit the migrant population of Immokalee], a founding initiative of The Immokalee Foundation in the early ’90s. I am a horseback rider and my trainer was involved in the planning and execution of the event along with Parker Collier. Wisdom to share with young people: I think it can be intimidating for young professionals to consider themselves “philanthropists” because we don’t have the monetary resources to drive change, but we can help in other ways. Start small and be open to opportunities for involvement that may come your way. It’s the whole pebble in the water phenomenon: One small action can have far-reaching consequences. Don’t worry if you feel like right now your capacity to contribute is limited; it will grow. Do what you can. Words to live by: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” (Leo Buscaglia) I’m sure we can all think of an instance where a small compliment or other minor victory really turned around an entire day. Latest initiatives: l The Next Generation Committee for The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, and working on a new signature event to debut in May. l Planning committee for the Naples Zoo’s ZOObilee 2014. l Planning committee for the 2014 David Lawrence Center gala. I am a huge proponent of mental health and wellness support.

Yachts By HOWARD WALKER

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show may be over this season—but here’s a dazzling peek at eight of the most innovative new superyachts to hold you over until fall.

Jazz

From the creative mind of renowned architect Zaha Hadid comes a line of superyachts that look more like spaceships than boats. Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Hadid has partnered with Hamburg, Germanybased Blohm + Voss to design a family of five 295-foot “Unique Circle Yachts,” all based on a 420-foot master prototype. The first, Jazz, has already been commissioned and is being specified and detailed by naval experts Blohm + Voss. The yachts look much like Hadid’s ethereal architecture—all glacier white with fluid dynamics. Mimicking her Miami condominium project One Thousand Museum, the yachts were designed with an exoskeleton, which connects the various levels and decks of the ship with expressive diagonals. The whole design evokes the organic structural systems found in natural marine formations. Inside, stark pod-like furniture (similar to that found in the Hadiddesigned Roca London Gallery showroom) fills the captain’s deck. The five yachts in the Unique Circle Line will be designed to owner preferences, making each one unique. (zaha-hadid.com)

Lunar

By definition, motor sailers tend to offer the worst of all worlds: They motor like a Hummer on two cylinders and sail even worse. The new Polish-built Conrad 115 motor sailer Lunar may just break that mold. First, the Conrad’s looks: Designers Newcruise of Hamburg, Germany, have given this all-aluminum, 115-foot ketch superyacht styling at its finest. That wavelike sheerline, the straight-up bow, the rolling edges to the superstructure, the silver-painted hull … it’s all absolutely gorgeous. She’s a ketch with twin carbon masts and cutter rig. And there are no grinding winches here; everything is hydraulic. As for the “motor” part of the motorsailer, she’s powered by a couple of Cat C18Ds, each good for 725 horses. That’s enough to shove her along at 14 knots. And with her 1,340-gallon tanks brimmed, Lunar should be good for South Florida to St. Barths without topping off. Not that you’d need to with all those sails. Below decks, there’s a choice of four spacious en-suite cabins, while on deck there’s a mini pool to cool off in, plus a hydraulic bathing platform for those back dives with a half-twist. Lunar was commissioned for a Baltic billionaire who intends to sail her to the far corners of the earth, though the folks at Conrad will be happy to replicate her. (conradshipyard.

M

There seems to be an economy of lettering in modern-day yachtnaming. After Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s A and the Perini Navi Group superyacht P2, now comes M, a bold new composite-hulled 132-footer from the family-owned Istanbul yard Bilgin Yachts. Reverse bow styling is nothing new. It goes back to pre-World War II warships, though Melnichenko’s submarine-like A arguably brought it back into fashion. Bilgin’s M is the latest superyacht to incorporate this head-turning nautical design cue, which is reckoned to pierce through the waves more smoothly than a conventional bow. H2 Yacht Design penned the exterior and interior of this $15 million silver bullet. Powered by twin V-16 MTU oil-burners each cranking out a healthy 2,400 hp, the 195-ton M will scythe through those waves at 23 knots max and cruise leisurely at 18. Inside, she’s very much on the SoHo loft-style side, with lots of sleek and sexy Macassar ebony and zebrano timber, plus lashings of leather and designer fabrics. Eight guests can relax very comfortably in a quartet of cabins, with zero-speed stabilizers to calm those Mediterranean swells. While M was built only last year, she has already hit the usedboat market. Last time we looked, the sticker on the windshield read $12.6 million. (bilginyacht.com) 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Prima

Like Toyota’s hybrid, this new 131-foot Columbus Prima has two

giant electric motors that allow it to cruise silently and with zero emissions. But if anyone makes a Prius analogy, just whip out the RINA Green Star Plus Award given to Naples, Italy–based yacht builder Palumbo Shipyards by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. The secret of the Columbus Sport 130 Hybrid’s environmental friendliness is its hybrid system of fuel-sipping generators charging up batteries that provide juice to those twin electric motors. As long as you’re content to amble along at 7.5 knots, it’ll likely cruise for eternity—or at least 5,000 nautical miles. Want to go faster? That’s when the big-muscle diesels kick in and the knots rise to an impressive 25. Helping to save on diesel is the lightweight aluminum used for Prima’s semi-displacement hull and swoopy superstructure. She may not be the prettiest yacht in the harbor—the towering sides, bulbous bow and steely-bronze paint created by Hydro Tec Naval Architecture make her look a little industrial. But there’s no doubt her new Russian owner is ecstatic. Below decks, there’s a quartet of beautifully finished cabins featuring a mix of light fabrics and dark marble. One of the exterior highlights is its massive rear deck that the designers call “The Beach Club.” Prima’s rumored cost is in the region of $30 million. (columbusyachts.it)

Adastra

At more than 138-feet long, Adastra is the second-largest trimaran yacht ever built. Its owners, billionaire Hong Kong shipping magnate Anto Marden and wife Elaine, commissioned it for longrange ocean exploring. Designed by United Kingdom–based John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs Ltd. and built by McConaghy Boats, Adastra is so technologically advanced it’s like a cross between a Star Wars fighter and a James Bond toy: You can control this watercraft with an iPad from up to 150 feet away. Inside, there are accommodations for nine guests plus a crew of six in

078-Yachts_0114.indd 81

cabins made even more eye-catching by the sweeping curves of the main hull. Finding a straight edge in this floating masterpiece is a challenge. Although it has massive, 800-gallon tanks, Adastra was designed to be a fuel miser. It’s built using a glass fiber and Kevlar sandwich with Corecell foam and tips the scales at just 52 tons. There are no fancy jet-drives or turbines delivering the power. Under the “hood” is a single Caterpillar C18 diesel producing 1,150 hp. While top speed is 22.5 knots, it cruises at an easy 17 knots, giving Adastra a 4,000-mile range. As for the price, we’ve heard estimates of around $15 million. (john-shuttleworth.com)

Only Now

The winner of Boat International magazine’s World Superyacht 2013 award, the gorgeous Only Now may be the perfect-sized luxury yacht. At 111 feet bow to stern, 24 feet wide and just 5.6 feet deep, it’s spacious enough to comfortably accommodate friends and family, yet not so big that you can’t slip into a sheltered anchorage. And with twin 1,700-hp Catapillar C32s pushing her to an easy 22 knots, the Only Now from Istanbul-based Tansu Yachts has the pace to match her grace. Turkish yards have long been masters at working with wood, and Only Now takes the technique to the next level with its light yet super-strong wooden and epoxy hull and superstructure. Tansu Yachts worked with the naval architects and engineers at Diana Yacht Design to shape Only Now’s head-turning lines featuring that distinctive, wave-cleaving axe bow and square-edged, slightly militaristic top. There are accommodations for up to six guests divided into three spacious cabins. The centrally located master features a walk-in wardrobe, his and hers en-suite bathrooms and an office. And the ship’s gym is just a short jog away. (rizatansu.com)

Lady M

Italian design, Wisconsin craftsmanship—when it comes to building superyachts, that seems to be the magic combination. Lady M is Sturgeon Bay–based Palmer Johnson’s latest and arguably greatest jewel that made a splash last summer. The sleek, 213-foot, all-aluminum beauty gets its achingly gorgeous design from Venice-based Nuvolari & Lenard, which gave her a sweeping bow section that gives this megayacht a low-slung, hunkereddown look that somehow shrinks its considerable size. The sweep of the roofline, which starts at the front of the wheelhouse and cascades to the swim platform, makes Lady M look racy even when at anchor.

82

And racy she is. Equipped with twin MTU V-16s delivering 4,600 hp apiece, she cruises at 25 knots and tops out at 28. Throttle back to a calmer 12 knots and she’ll cross the Atlantic on her 21,000-gallon tank. This full tri-deck, with its generous beam of 31 feet, has acres of space. There are five lower-deck staterooms, generous crew quarters and a massive master stateroom with a private balcony. And she’s built for fun. On board, there is a cinema, a huge aft deck with a Jacuzzi pool, an indoor gym and a fold-out helicopter pad, plus an elevating crow’s nest to check out the sights when you tie up quayside in Cannes. Aeroboat

There are superyachts and then there are super yachts. The breathtaking Aeroboat, from the drawing board of Britain’s Claydon Reeves, is going to cause jaws to drop and craniums to rotate from Naples to St. Tropez’s Nikki Beach when it eventually hits the water. Powering this 48-foot, carbon fiber-hulled projectile is a 2,100-hp Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12. Yes, the one that powered the famous Spitfire World War II fighter plane. If you’ve ever heard the distant, full-throated roar of a Spitfire on flyby, you probably still have ringing in your ears. Now imagine the sound as the Aeroboat thunders past the jetty at speeds up to 50 knots.

Thankfully, this rocket-boat is equipped with a two-stage exhaust that provides a fully hushed system, providing calm and quiet docking Design-wise, the long bow of the Aeroboat hints at those epic PT109 motor torpedo boats that JFK crewed on in World War II, while the stern has the flavor of a high-speed vintage hydroplane. Legendary British boat builder Green Marine has the contract to build the boat. However, because Merlin engines are so rare, just 10 of these extraordinary high-speed day boats will be built, each with a $3 million to $4 million price tag. (claydonreeves.com)

Ghost

Dutch master yacht-builder Feadship and De Voogt Naval Architects created the edgy, radical lines of this 180-foot, all-aluminum rocketship for Holland’s Ghost Yachts. From her knife-like bow to her creased stern and folded-paper style superstructure, Ghost is a stark, clean-lined beauty. Coupling lightweight alloy construction with an advanced hull design featuring a mix of hard chines and round bilge sections, Ghost can slice through the water like a knife through butter. And with her meager 7-foot, 4-inch draft, she’ll go into anchorages few other megayachts can reach. While her twin V-12 MTU diesels deliver a combined 6,920 hp, these power plants are smaller than a yacht of this size might normally use. Yet pedal-to-the-metal, she’ll hit an impressive 29 knots, while 11 knots will give Ghost a transatlantic range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. Alberto Vismara of the Undicimetriquadri interior design group crafted accommodations for eight in four spacious cabins together with a sprawling master. The decor is said to be on the minimalistic side with lots of brushed aluminum and light veneers. Right now, Ghost’s design is just that—a design. But with every detail now complete, Ghost Yacht founder Bjorn Moonen hopes to have the ship in build in the very near future. (ghost-yachts.com) «

Wings

FindinG HER

The deep yearning for a place to belong is a common thread in the human experience and a powerful theme Sue Monk Kidd returns to again and again in her best-selling novels. Her latest work, The Invention of Wings (Viking, 2014), is inspired by historical figure Sarah Grimké. She was one of two real-life sisters who were among the earliest pioneers for women’s rights in early nineteenth-century Charleston, South Carolina. The powerfully stirring novel focuses on the relationship between Sarah and fictional urban slave Handful, who becomes her handmaid. “A writer really shouldn’t compare her literary children, but for me this is my best work,” says Kidd, whose literary themes often focus on gender and race equality. “My characters are always trying to find that place of belonging. I was searching for that myself in my 20s.” In the 1970s, Kidd had what many would consider an idyllic life: a husband, two toddlers, a station wagon and a dog. Yet she struggled with an intensifying restlessness. Ironically, she felt homesick in her own home.

Marco Island’s celebrated author Sue Monk Kidd on her journey as a writer and the courage she found to allow herself to soar. BY TERI EVANS

“It grew over the years, the needing to express myself creatively through words,” Kidd says. Marking a milestone in her life apparently stirred the courage to reveal herself. “I remember it was my thirtieth birthday. I walked into my kitchen where my family was sitting at breakfast and just announced: ‘I’m going to become a writer!’” says Kidd, now 65 and a resident of Marco Island. “I hadn’t planned to do it. It’s taking out your courage pieces at a time and then leaping off and jumping in over your head. I became a writer by really jumping in over my head, no doubt about it.” In her journey as a writer, Kidd penned nonfiction for years, finding her voice in memoirs until she neared yet another milestone—one that would nudge her to turn inward once again. “When I was approaching 50 it felt like my

writing had kind of gone to seed, as if something had run its course. I wanted to become a novelist and I was trying to gather my clarity and courage to do that,” says Kidd, who then began taking trips with her daughter, Ann—traveling to Greece, Turkey and France. “We all have these passages where life takes new turns and we have to reimagine our lives or reinvent ourselves or see what else there is inside of us that wants to be expressed. I was at one of those places creatively.” At 53, she published her first novel, The Secret Life of Bees (Penguin, 2003), which was widely lauded in literary circles and became an award-winning feature film in 2008. As her third novel is released this month, Kidd shares her insights on truth, courage and why the Paradise Coast just might find its way into her next literary work. Edited excerpts follow. was very inspiring to see that graceful flow with her wings behind her. Feather figure: I’ve been collecting feathers for many years. I have owl feathers, osprey feathers and all kinds of feathers that are reminders of that part of our life that wants to be free—that wants to soar. I’m sure that is the reason I had feather collectors turn up in my novels.

Scheduled for release January 7.

Memorable quote: “Go into yourself and see how deep the place is from which your life flows,” by poet Rainer Maria Rilke. I believe creativity comes from this deep place inside of us that he’s speaking about. There’s so much our conscious mind can do, but it’s this deeper place that can create and cause our work to soar in a different, new way.

What matters: One of the guiding things in my life is being true to myself. To even understand what our truth is can be quite an endeavor, and not parrot someone else’s truth that belongs to a family, friend, religion or political party.

I always wanted to write from my most authentic voice to tell my truth, then stand by my truth ... that always took a kind of courage.

Finding a muse: The black Madonna is an iconic spiritual symbol I discovered when I was traveling. I was so entranced with her imagery and iconography that I began to study what she was about. She stands for resilience, strength, authority, courage, compassion and inclusion. She’s about no one being left out. She became very muse-like to me and I put her prominently in my novel, The Secret Life of Bees. Her writing space: I have a room that’s floor-to-ceiling books around the walls and I have images of black Madonnas, besides a vase of flowers and an array of seashells. I also have rocks from where I have traveled that mean something to me. One is from Sarah Grimké’s graveside when I visited her resting place. There are also postcards of artistic pieces from the Louvre. The Winged Victory of Samothrace is a favorite piece. It

On courage: I always wanted to write from my most authentic voice, to tell the truth of my experience and then express that truth from my imagination. That always took a kind of courage. I don’t leap out of airplanes and skydive but I always try to take creative risks and dare what I can with my work and my life, trying to evolve it. Daily ritual: My husband and I watch the sunrise and I usually take a 45-minute walk along the Gulf. I love the light in the morning and the rhythm of the waves. The sounds, the smells, and the sensuality of this place where the Gulf touches the beach— I love that edge of life. It has to do with nurturing a contemplative environment that can fuel my work. On writing with her daughter: It was one of the best experiences of my life to write Traveling with Pomegranates (Penguin, 2010) with Ann. She worked for years

on it and one day she called and said, “Mom, would you like to write this book with me? I’m only telling half the story.” She wanted my voice in the book. Of course, I leaped at it. It’s a mother-daughter story as well as a travel book, but it’s also the story of me becoming an older woman trying to kind of re-find my creative bearings, which I had lost at that point. And Ann at the other end of life trying to set out and find her way.

mother-daughter duo: "It was one of the best experiences of my life to write Traveling with Pomegranates with Ann," says Sue Monk Kidd.

Next chapter: While I probably won’t be thinking about a new book until the summer, I would be surprised if it didn’t have connections to Florida. An important part of my life is the place I’m in. I want to relate to that place and write about that place.

VANESSA ROGERS

Favorite spots on Marco Island: I love to sit out on the dock at Snook’s [Snook Inn] and watch the dolphins and eat shrimp. I enjoy Quinn’s at the Marriott on the beach, where I just walk the beach and enjoy the activities around there. At any moment we can see dolphins outside of our windows and manatees, and ospreys flying and the bird life. These things are magical. «

Journey of a Lifetime

The 18 couples who became the founding trustees of the Naples Winter Wine Festival.

How the seeds of a charitable idea morphed into the philanthropic powerhouse that is the Naples Winter Wine Festival. By Teri Evans When the founding trustees of the Naples Winter Wine Festival (NWWF) launched the inaugural fundraising event in 2001, none could have imagined the phenomenon it would become. The theme of this year’s festival, which takes place January 24 - 26, is “Celebrate the Journey.” And what a journey it has been, not only for the 150,000 children served, but also for the festival’s founders, who have seen the impact the fundraiser has had on the community through the years. To date, the festival’s auction has raised more than $110 million, plus another $24 million in sponsorships and donations, making it the most successful charitable event of its kind in the country. At its roots, NWWF began with a simple yet powerful pledge: to raise enough money

098-feat wine festival-0114.indd 99

to make a profound difference in the lives of children in Collier County. The seeds of the idea were planted in late 1999, when several of the founding trustees (ultimately, 18 couples signed on for the first one) would come together at each other’s homes for fine wine, good food and conversation. Many enjoyed collecting wine and two couples owned vineyards, so when the conversation turned to helping children in the community, it appeared fitting they would decide to start a wine auction. “So many charities were trying to fund productive programs for kids but they didn’t have enough money,” says Jeff Gargiulo, chair of the first NWWF in 2001 and owner of Gargiulo Vineyards in Napa Valley. He and his wife, Valerie Boyd, are among the founding trustees of NWWF.

Once the decision was made to move forward with a wine festival, each couple made a financial commitment of $10,000, covering the expenses of the event so all the money raised would go to helping underprivileged children. Monthly meetings followed to divvy up responsibilities, playing on the strengths of everyone involved. For example, founding trustee Ned Sachs is a lawyer, so he helped to draft the bylaws. “Charities often operated in silos, and we thought if we all worked together we could build a better mousetrap, where the collaboration and partnership would be better,” Sachs says. As part of that collaboration, they organized a meet-the-kids day at the festival, a way for charities to show attendees where their donations would be going. NAPLESillustrated.com | JANUARY 2014

You can take away all the success in business and careers to know you left a legacy of helping. It doesn’t get any better than that. —Denise Cobb

Clockwise from top: First checks presented to Youth Haven and the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County in 2001; founding trustees Jeff Gargiulo and Valerie Boyd in 2003; and the original auction catalog from the inaugural Naples Winter Wine Festival in 2001.

“You get a chance to listen to some of the kids speak on how it has changed their lives,” says Frank Hussey, who, along with his wife, Mary Pat, are founding trustees. “I think that had the biggest impact. When we see the children who hadn’t been succeeding and now they are, it makes you feel good.” The heartstring tug of the children’s stories, coupled with the auction and intimate vintner dinners led to a total of $2.2 million raised during the festival’s first year, far more than the trustees had expected. “It was the couples together that made it a success,” says Denise Cobb, a founding trustee, along with her husband, Brian. “Everyone had unique talents. The business-minded people coupled with the event-planning and fundraising skills of others. We also had access to private planes; we knew we could get a lot of vintners if we could fly them in privately. We put them up in our homes.” Each year that followed, the festival continued to raise even more money. The trustees established the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF) as an umbrella organization that

distributed the funds raised from the festival to various local charities. “We wanted to make a sustaining difference with the money and be good stewards,” says Frank Hussey. Beginning in 2006, the NCEF began to launch strategic initiatives for the children it served. For example, it started Lunchboxes of Love to stave off childhood hunger. There is a children’s vision program to provide screenings, exams and eyeglasses. In addition, the NCEF Pediatric Dental Center at Edison State College and the NCEF Early Childhood Center both opened in East Naples in 2008. There are also after-school programs and initiatives to improve children’s health care and mental health. Founding trustee Mary Pat Hussey is the current chair and long-time board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, which is a beneficiary of the NCEF. “We serve more than 50,000 meals in the summer and when I see all the programs going on at Boys & Girls Club, seeing the game room and gym filled is so exciting,” she says. “I get goose bumps because where would these kids be otherwise?” Aside from the Boys & Girls Club, more than 30 charitable organizations have been beneficiaries of money raised from the festival over the years. “Getting involved with [NWWF] was probably the single most rewarding thing we’ve ever done in our lives,” adds Cobb. “You can take away all the success in business and careers to know you left a legacy of helping. It doesn’t get any better than that.” «

On getting involved: I’ve been a trustee for a number of years and other people have stepped up and done this, so I felt a big sense of responsibility. It always goes back to it’s for the good of the kids. Where would our community be if we didn’t have the Winter Wine Festival?

On getting involved: In January 2003, my late husband and I were house hunting in Naples, but were concerned it was too staid and quiet. Scott Lutgert invited us to the wine festival. We were so impressed, not only with the generosity of the patrons, but with the excitement under the tent! We bought the house, became trustees and hosted our first vintner dinner in 2005.

Philanthropy means … giving back in a way that you can see the difference you’re making in the community. Writing a check is one thing, but there’s so much beyond that. When you see the need, it’s so evident you can actually make a difference. Collier County needs it so everybody works hard to make it happen. If she were bidding at the auction … I’ve heard spectacular things about the around-the-world trip; I’d love to do that with my husband. There are also some larger group trips, and one that’s so out of the box is the trekking mission to Everest base camp. I love to hike. I’d love to do that. She’s most looking forward to … taking a moment under the tent to sit and connect with everyone. I love the people I’ve been working with— the chefs, the vintners. After sending what seems like a million emails and connecting with them over the year, I want to take a minute with them to reflect on how this all came together.

098-feat wine festival-0114.indd 101

Philanthropy means … a positive force for change, a way for those who have done well to do good. No matter how successful we have been, at one time or another we have benefited from the help of others. If she were bidding at the auction … one of the most unusual items is the Everest adventure, starting out in Kathmandu, traveling to beautiful sites along the way and trekking to Mount Everest base camp. Takes my breath away just to think of it, though I admit I would really have to step up my game to make it! She’s most looking forward to … perhaps my favorite is the vintner dinner, when you get to know one another in an intimate setting. We always have a cover band, so I remember the guests by which band played that night. They may pretend not to remember how much they danced, but we have the photos to prove it.

On getting involved: I have been involved in philanthropy my entire life so I liked the challenge of building something from scratch. Many people asked, why the children of Collier County? Wherever they’re from, if they can be helped to reach their potential, the possibilities are limitless. Like ripples on a pond, they could be president one day or find a cure for cancer. Philanthropy means … to be involved in the place where one lives and help those less fortunate. My mother’s passion was children’s causes. She brought me along as a young child to a school for children with cerebral palsy. Empathy and caring were instilled in me at a young age. If she were bidding at the auction … I’m an adventure traveler so it would be the trip to Israel or the one to Everest base camp. It’s the first time we’ve offered those. There is also a trip to Cuba that would appeal to me, but I’ve gone twice already. She’s most looking forward to … the auction, where we raise money for the children. It’s loud, a lot of fun and lasts up to six hours, but it goes by like the snap of a finger. In 2007, we auctioned a special Rolls-Royce. Two men held their paddles up until it went to $2 million. The man who won was 90. The other man bought another car for $1.3 million at the same auction. NAPLESillustrated.com | JANUARY 2014

FOR THE LOVE OF

Classics

Why invest in art that merely hangs on a wall when you can own a drivable masterpiece? Now is the time to invest in, and enjoy, a classic automobile.

M

odern cars are just that: modern. Climb in, turn on, drive away. With a few exotic exceptions, the experience tends to be as exhilarating as piloting a washing machine. No wonder we text too much behind the wheel. But owning a classic—now that’s different. Daydream for a second about the hedonistic, grin-inducing joy of cruising south on Gulf Shore Drive in a lipstick-red ’65 Mustang convertible with the sun on your face, wind in your hair and Windex-blue Gulf to the right. If you have the urge to own a classic, you’re not alone. Demand for collector cars, especially those lovingly restored in top condition, has never been higher. And neither have the prices.

The collector car world is still abuzz at the news that a classic Ferrari 250 GTO race car, one of just 36 built between 1962 and 1964, changed hands in October for a staggering $52 million. Before that, at the August RM classic car auction in Monterey, California, one collector bid $27.5 million for a rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider. Even the humble, pint-sized 1958 Fiat 600 Jolly ragtop at RM’s Amelia Island auction in the spring sold for an unbelievable $110,000. Whether you’re looking for a classic as a solid-return investment or simply want a hot car to cruise around in during the weekend, you won’t be disappointed with one of these models.

Star Quality 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet The 1960s four-seat Mercedes-Benz convertibles have long been a favorite of Neapolitans, providing perfect roomy transportation for friends and family to the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club for lunch. A hugely appealing model is the 220SE, with its economical six-cylinder power. Around $60,000 buys a nicely restored model, while this 220SE sold recently at auction for $82,500.

Luxe Deluxe 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Is there a more elegant way to cruise through Naples to your yacht than behind the wheel of an early-’60s Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud sedan? Stately, refined, classy and oh-so-British, the Cloud is the Rolls-Royce in which they say the only thing you can hear while driving is the ticking of the clock. Around $50,000 or so will buy a well-maintained model. As for the joy of owning it—priceless.

Rolls-Royce

No car epitomized the shagadelic ’60s in England more than the E-Type. Although it was undervalued for so long, prices are now rising fast, reflecting the car’s immense appeal. Gorgeous to look at and a delight to drive, the E should continue to appreciate in value. While this golden beauty sold at auction in July for $104,500, a roadster in good condition can be had for around $80,000.

Rock ‘n’ Roll 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible Is there a more perfect Florida cruiser? Fifties Caddies were the undisputed kings of American luxury cars, with their acres of chrome, huge V-8 power and Barcalounger-style seating for five. Yes, they’re big and bulky to drive but hugely fun to just glide in around town. Prices start around $60,000.

Beach Baby To witness just how super-heated the collector car market is now, cast your eyes on this delicious 1958 Fiat Jolly. Last year, this surrey-topped, wicker-seated, no-door beach cruiser sold at RM’s Amelia Island auction for a staggering $110,000. Back in the ’50s, Fiat’s yacht-loving chairman, Gianni Agnelli, asked his designers to build him a tender for his vessel. So many of his friends wanted one, the Jolly was built in limited numbers. Before being sold to its new owner, this car spent most of its life in Florida.

The Gold Standard 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider At the RM auction in August in Monterey, California, this stunning 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sold for $27.5 million, making it the most expensive road car ever sold at auction in the United States. It’s one of only 10 North American Racing Team Spider dropheads built between 1967 and 1968, powered by a 300-horsepower, four-cam V-12. And the good news? All the proceeds went to charity.

The Racer 2005 Ford GT

Darin Schnabel ©2013 Courtesy RM Auctions

The world was shocked and awed when Ford recently decided to celebrate its 1960s victories at Le Mans with its GT40s by building a modern-day version of the race cars. Between 2004 and 2006, Ford hand-built 4,038 hip-high GTs powered by a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8. It was Detroit’s first true supercar. Originally priced at around $150,000, prices have soared to over $200,000 and they’ll only continue skywards. This 2005 model sold at auction in April for $231,000 and was worth every cent.

Ferrari. Just the mere mention of the name will give any car lover goose bumps. But prices have long been going through the roof, leaving less-appealing models like the Mondial and boxy 308 GT4 Dino to be snapped up by misguided bargain hunters. The most sensible Ferrari to collect these days is the easy-to-maintain 360—the Spider, rather than the coupe. Around $80,000 will buy a good convertible. This 2002 model sold at auction in August for $104,500.

Are the firm’s client relationship managers paid for sales or service? A. Q. Are the firm’s portfolio managers paid based on assets under management or on long-term performance? A. At Bessemer Trust, wealth management is our only business, and we’ve been doing it for over 100 years. We’re privately held and always have been. We don’t have to answer to some parent company’s short-term earnings objectives or cross-sell products for them. We have no hidden agendas. What’s more, our owners and employees literally invest their own wealth right alongside that of our clients, so you benefit from a lot of very careful thinking. Our client service teams have no financial incentive to recommend one manager or asset class over another. They are entirely focused on serving our clients’ needs. And our portfolio managers are compensated based on long-term performance, not on short-term returns or assets under management since such incentives can taint judgment. Portfolio performance is not a criterion because most advisors do not have audited track records. Wealth management and investing in the global economy Harnessing the power of the global economy As the U.s. economy continues to grow at a slower pace, and as yield becomes increasingly harder to find, investors are searching for more ways to boost growth in their portfolios. That’s why looking outside the U.S. is so important right now, not only in terms of diversifying your assets, but also in diversifying your portfolio to help protect against another potential downturn in the U.s. economy. the stephens Group can help you identify opportunities that give you the best exposure to the global marketplace while at the same time helping to minimizing your risk. Global perspective, local presence Group Principal, Jason E. Stephens, Senior Vice President, has seen firsthand the enormous economic potential that an energetic, entrepreneurial workforce can have abroad when regulation is loosened. On a recent visit to south America, Jason experienced the potential boost that Brazil will receive from hosting the World Cup in 2014 and then the Summer Olympics in 2016. There are a multitude of infrastructure projects in this region including in surrounding countries that make Latin America an exciting region to keep an eye on. Also, consider Europe, which is starting their recovery from the global meltdown. Many European equities yield over 4%1 and with the potential of an economic recovery mirroring the U.S., Europe could be a great investment for a portion of your assets. On a local level, Jason’s team includes fixed income specialist and municipal securities principal Richard B. Marchisio and senior portfolio manager and equity specialist Russell L. Roth. Together, they bring nearly a century of combined experience.

We are determined to stick to our resolution to make healthier choices in 2014. Lucky for us, the mixologists at Bites in the Lobby Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, shake up the Jade Nectar, a refreshing cocktail with good-for-you ingredients, including cucumber and aromatic yuzu leaves. While one might wag a finger at the vodka, the Ketel One Citroen in this libation is infused with green tea, which has 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and veggies by some estimates. Bill Telepan

As chef and owner of the highly acclaimed Telepan restaurant in New York, one would assume Bill Telepan grew up experimenting in the kitchen. But his path to the kitchen, he readily acknowledges, was purely accidental. “I never cooked at home. I was outside all the time, playing sports or running around and getting in trouble,” says Telepan with a hearty boyish laugh. Even so, his love of food was always obvious. “Every time there’s a family function, the first thing we ask is, how is the food? We’re all into food; not like foodies, but we like to eat and we like the food to taste good.” Growing up in New Jersey, he started working in restaurants during high school to save money for a car and college. “It wasn’t until a few months after I left it that I realized it was what I wanted to do,” says Telepan, who went on to study at the Culinary Institute of America before ultimately opening his own fine-dining establishment. For the Naples Winter Wine Festival this month, Telepan has been tapped as the Chef de Cuisine. This is his fourth time taking part in the annual charity event.

FOR THE VINTNER DINNER: The wine is so important, so I gather the wine experts and they move me towards foods that go with [the selections]. And then, if a [specific wine] goes with scallops, for example, I’ll ask if we should go in the direction of artichokes or potatoes. And if we’re preparing duck, should it be earthy or a little fruity? From that point, I put the menu together. FAVORITE INGREDIENTS TO COOK WITH: Olive oil and a little chili flake to spice things up. MOST EXOTIC MEAL: Daniel Boulud and his team once cooked for about 40 chefs, and the meal included three various preparations of tripe and ortolan, a small bird that you can eat whole, bones and all. That was pretty wild. I’D LOVE TO COOK FOR: The band Radiohead. They would be fun. PET PEEVE: I don’t like mistakes to be made twice. FAVORITE DISH: My daughter makes a mean spaghetti Bolognese. She wanted to do it, so I taught her. It’s so fun to watch her cook. She’s 12. SECRET FOOD OBSESSION: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. CHILDHOOD CRAVING: My mom’s stuffed cabbage. She always makes the cabbage rolls, which is basically pork, rice, a little tomato juice and sauerkraut. But she also puts in pork ribs and smoked kielbasa. So good! —T.E.

Bubbles of Distinction Celebrate extraordinary moments with an equally extraordinary bottle of Champagne. By Mark SPivak

Above: Salon Champagne. Right: Vines at Champagne Krug.

Champagne is a mirror of the good life in all its forms— the beverage we choose for celebration and commemoration, to mark a milestone, or reward ourselves for a job well done. For those times when only the rarest and finest will do, here are three top choices: Krug: It’s fitting that Olivier Krug was chosen to be the featured vintner at this year’s Naples Winter Wine Festival. For six generations, Champagne Krug has epitomized excellence, providing a special experience prized above all others. The house was founded in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, an immigrant from the German city of Mainz. “My great-great-great grandfather had a vision,” says Olivier. “He knew that Champagne was about pleasure. His dream was to create Champagne that would be superlative every year, regardless of the quality of the vintage.” There are many factors that set Krug apart, but the most important is careful and artful blending, which is responsible for the wine’s complexity, harmony and finesse. The cornerstone of the production is Grande Cuvée ($210), referred to by some as a “multi-vintage” rather than nonvintage Champagne, containing wines from at least 10 different vintages, some of which are as old as 15 years. Salon: In the early years of the twentieth century, a Parisian furrier named Eugène Aimé Salon had a vision. He was convinced that Chardonnay grapes from Le Mesnilsur-Oger could produce Champagne of great elegance and so superlative that it wouldn’t be necessary to add the customary Pinot Noir or Pinot Meunier. Today, most connoisseurs believe he was right. He began making Champagne solely from Chardonnay grapes, a wine he shared only with friends. The first commercial release of Salon was 1921; there were a total of 37 vintages made during the twentieth century, an average of four per decade. The wine is powerful and ripe, with prominent acidity and a strong mineral underpinning. It’s not easy to find, and averages $350 per bottle when available, but it is one of the most singular experiences in the world of Champagne.

Dom Pérignon Oenothèque: This isn’t the stuff you buy at Costco. At rare intervals, the house of Moët rereleases exceptional vintages of Dom Pérignon, Champagne that has rested comfortably in the cellars of the châteaux at Épernay. They are disgorged before release, and typically have a lower dosage (sweetness) level than the regular Dom. These bottles are rare gems, and prices reflect that: They start around $400 for recent vintages, and climb as high as $1,600 for older years. The even rarer Oenothèque Rosé hovers around $1,000 per bottle. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to taste the 1990 and 2000 Oenothèque Rosé with Vincent Chaperon, winemaker for Dom Pérignon, who works under Chef

du Cave Richard Geoffroy. Chaperon is a self-described risk-taker who views the process of creating Dom as an existential challenge. The 2000 is full-bodied and elegant in the mouth, with expansive flavors of wild strawberry and red raspberry. The most remarkable aspect of the wine is its finish. Rich and haunting, it seems to continue for a full minute. As good as it is, it pales next to the 1990, which has an amazing nose of pastry dough, tropical fruits and candied red berries, along with whiffs of mushroom and truffle. It is intense and complex on the palate, with unfolding layers of rhubarb and red fruits. And the finish? I’m still thinking about it, and that’s what I call length. «

Balance WINTER WORKOUT Who needs snow? Gather the kids and head to Germain Arena in Estero for indoor ice skating this winter. Aside from public skating, the arena offers eight-week programs for lessons in hockey, figure skating and, of course, the basics of just staying vertical on the ice. We love that it’s also a great calorie burner and quad workout—plus, skating sharpens your balance. No figure eights required! (skateeverblades.com)

Balance

Better Your Game There’s more to improving your golf swing than putting in more time on the green.

By Lauren Daniels

Looking to make your swing more efficient, improve ball strike and increase driving distance on the golf course? Simply putting in more hours at the gym or the driving range may not get the results you are after. “A lot of people think that working out is enough,” says Mike Edwards, exercise physiologist and owner of Fitness Inside and Out. Golf is a sport based on a rotational movement, so “even if you have a fitness program, chances are you aren’t doing exercises that will help with that,” he says. But there are golf-focused fitness facilities in Naples that offer specialized training to improve your game. Starting with a multifaceted individual assessment, these programs combine exercise physiology, physical therapy and golf-centric instruction. Here are three local facilities to consider, whether you're a seasoned pro or weekend golfer.

(App for thAT!) Determined to stick to your fitness resolution this year? Runkeeper can be your reality check. The mobile app tracks your workouts, including distance and calories burned, and keeps a log of your progress. Simply choose from about a dozen types of workouts (or add your own), put in the time or upload a map and then get moving. The app can also create workouts based on your fitness goal, workout frequency and skill level. How’s that for motivation? (runkeeper.com) —T.E.

Fitness Inside and Out, Naples: The physical therapists and trainers here will assess balance, posture, strength and flexibility issues as they relate to the golf swing. The idea is to look at what each individual needs to improve his or her game, then tailor an exercise routine to address those needs. “Best case [scenario is] someone would work with us and with a golf pro,” Edwards says. “The professional offers lessons and instruction and we are working on what may be preventing you from achieving those goals.” (naplesfitness.com) Best for: Perfect for frequent travelers, the team at Fitness Inside and Out will design a program that can be done at-home or on the road. Elite Physical Therapy, Naples: Holding certifications from both the Titleist Performance Institute and Nike 360 Golf, the licensed physical therapists in the company’s Golf Fitness Link program are golf professionals and medical professionals. The golf swing can cause stress on the joints and other issues, says co-founder Ryan Senkarik. “Working out with a golf pro, for example, they may want you to get further into the back swing, and we look at the physical limitations of why you can’t get there,” he says. A customized, one-on-one training program is designed to fix those issues and get you back to playing more golf— faster. (eliteptofnaples.com) Best for: Intense golfers who have plateaued will benefit from the all-angles approach. Total Athletic Performance, Naples: The coaches at Total Athletic Performance look beyond golf to athleticism in general. “Most of the golfers we see need flexibility and power,” says Derek Touchette, the company's sports performance director. “They lack the range of motion needed to achieve their swing and the lack of power to be able to hit for distance.” The coaches will focus on building stamina, strength and power, incorporating exercises like squats and lunges, as well as the TRX suspension training system. “We are not golf coaches; we don’t focus on the swing. That’s what all of these great golf coaches around Naples are for. We are building an athlete.” (tapnaples.com) Best for: The weekend golfer who wants to improve his or her handicap—and overall fitness.

Whether you are a seasoned runner or just looking to get back into shape for the New Year, there are two opportunities to kick off your commitment to fitness this month. The HITS triathlon series (hitstriathlonseries .com) comes to Naples January 11 and 12 at Vanderbilt Beach. The following week, more than 2,000 runners will take to the streets January 19 for the Naples Half Marathon starting in Cambier Park in downtown Naples. (napleshalfmarathon.net) What to wear: The weather in Southwest Florida is unpredictable. Mitch Norgart, president of Gulf Coast Runners and a marathoner with more than 30 races under his belt, recommends layering with a long-sleeve Tshirt you don’t mind losing. “This way if the morning is cool, you can wear the longer layer, and then ditch it as you warm up,” Norgart says. What to eat: Dietitian Betsy Opyt of Healthy Concepts Nutrition & Fitness Counseling in Naples (who will be running the half marathon) recommends high-

carbohydrate foods with minimal protein and fat. Heavy eaters should try a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon and chia seeds. “Cinnamon helps dilate the blood vessels for circulation and chia seeds hold water for hydration,” Opyt says. Light eaters can opt for a dairy-free fruit smoothie for an easy-to-digest breakfast that will fuel the run. If you fall somewhere in between, a bagel with honey and cinnamon is hearty enough to stave off hunger without weighing you down. What to drink: Staying hydrated is essential to training for—and completing—any race. If you’re not prepared, experts say dehydration can set in soon as 15 to 20 minutes into a race. Electrolyte-enhanced beverages will help replace vital elements lost through sweat.

Soup-er Bowl The Empty Bowls project is a grassroots organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for global hunger through art and expression. The annual Empty Bowls Naples will take place January 25 in Cambier Park. For a donation of $15, guests are asked to keep an empty bowl made by a local schoolchild as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Attendees select a handcrafted bowl created by a student, then enjoy a variety of soups and bread provided by local food purveyors, a silent auction, pottery demonstrations and music. There will be bowl-making and painting workshops. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event. The proceeds benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida. Empty Bowls Naples raised $54,000 last year, which enabled the food bank to provide $324,000 worth of food to those in need. (empty bowlsnaples.org) —Ashley Scott

Giving BACK

A Generation Ahead

VANESSA ROGERS

E

Ellin Goetz and Michael Watkins have been giving back to the Naples community for decades. While the causes they champion may be different, the couple’s end goal of helping the next generation is the same. For Goetz, protecting the environment became a passion when she was growing up in Staten Island, New York, in the 1960s. When she was 10, her parents took her to a rally aimed at stopping a highway from being built through the island’s wild lands that had served as her playground. “To see that rapid development of a place that was dear to me had a big impact. And when I came to Naples, I saw this beautiful, low-populated place and the vast changes starting here, too,” says Goetz, a landscape architect. “How do you balance the natural world with our needs? That is the huge challenge.” It is one that she has embraced in Collier County without pause. In the late 1980s, Goetz started the Southwest Florida Land Preservation Trust, which preserved land through donations and easements. She then became part of a grassroots effort that led to Conservation Collier, a county program under which lands were purchased so they could be preserved and opened to the public for everything from horseback riding to hiking. Goetz is also on the board of the Everglades Foundation. While her focus remains steadfastly on the environment, her husband has aimed his efforts on helping the underprivileged children who will be living in it. For more than a decade Watkins has made contributions to the Education Foundation of Collier County (now called Champions for Learning), a nonprofit that invests in innovative ways to help students learn. He has also been on the board of Fun Time Early Childhood Academy for 10 years and involved in the program for nearly two decades. “When you help kids grow up nicely, the whole world is better,” says Watkins, whose family owns The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. “It’s a wonderful way to build a strong America.” —Teri Evans
