THE LUXURY LIFELINE

I

ROBERT NELSON

n the past few months, various experts have declared that the turbulent economy of the past few years is finally beginning to settle down. Some have even announced that “luxury is back.” But in my opinion, true luxury never left. Luxury never has been defined simply by what’s big and expensive and conspicuously consumed. Instead, it is, and always has been, a reflection of such timeless virtues as superior quality, uniqueness, personalization and anything else that’s in limited supply and therefore available to a select few. And even though most of us have made some concessions in our acquisition habits lately, our standards and our taste for the very best things in life have not changed. Instead, we have refocused our interests on products and experiences that are worth the investment. For example, according to a recent report in Fortune magazine, business at Hermès was up 10 percent at the end of last year—and there’s still a waiting list for the highly coveted Birkin handbag, a hand-stitched item that takes months to make, keeping supplies scarce. Likewise, Britain’s Ultratravel magazine cites an increase in international bookings for “authentic” vacations, such as privately guided ecological visits to Africa, Asia or Antarctica to see vanishing natural wonders. Even something as simple as thank-you notes— an elegant touch in an otherwise impersonal world—are on the rise, according to one researcher who sees an uptick in stationery sales and use of postal services. This brings up another interesting point: While we appreciate, and indeed seek, luxury, we have not forsaken the things that really matter, such as our civic duties, philanthropy and interpersonal relationships. Overall, luxury spending is expected to grow worldwide this year, according to recent research conducted by Bain & Co. That’s certainly good news, and it reinforces the role Naples Illustrated plays as the most vital source of information about how we live in this community. As retailers slowly bring more luxury goods and services to market in these days of cautious optimism, aiming for your attention while you weigh decisions about future acquisitions, we’ll continue to serve as a trusted adviser, as we have done for so many years, by offering a selective mix of fascinating editorial and relevant advertising content that fits your unique interests. We trust you’ll continue to find value on every page of every issue of this magazine. To paraphrase the famous saying, luxury often is a necessity. But we’ll humbly suggest that information about luxury—true luxury—and celebration of its many aspects is just as necessary. That’s exactly why we’re here.

FROM THE EDITOR

STYLISH oris Reynolds, the official historian for the City of Naples and one of my favorite bon vivants, put her notion of style in perspective for me. We were attending the second annual fashion show for Ave Maria University scholarships at the invitation of Rosemary Coyne (mark your calendar for next year’s event January 26, 2011). Reynolds, an octogenarian whose birthday is this month, says she prefers to think of herself as stylish rather than fashionable. Her interpretation falls into this definition: “a comfortable and elegant mode of existence.” Other definitions of style have applications in a wide variety of areas, including botany, medicine and zoology. A style is also an implement used for etching or writing, the needle of a phonograph, and the gnomon of a sundial. Another definition of style applies to what is currently in fashion: “The fashion of the moment, especially of dress; vogue.” We focus on fashion in each issue with various departments, including this issue’s examples of a clear trend (page 40), watches (page 36) and fashionable footwear (page 31). Each issue’s tastemaker profiles seek what’s stylish from those in the know, including long-time fashion maverick Michael Vollbracht, who has an Old Naples connection (page 32), and Harper’s Bazaar Fashion Editor Avril Graham (page 34), who highlights the strength of Italian designers and culture to be featured at Marissa Collections March 11 (page 168). Our own Fashion Director Katherine Lande takes a look at the spring runway trends and visually interprets them in our annual “Runway to Reality” feature (page 74). Our home profiles in every issue exemplify this definition: “A quality of imagination and individuality expressed in one’s actions and tastes.” The home of Caryn and Bill Schuman in Trieste, designed by Jenny Carter of K2 Design, showcases their combination of imagination and individuality (page 90). We were thinking about this same definition of style—individuality and imagination—along with stylish living when we selected our first group of “People to Watch” (page 80). We introduce rising stars—people whose style is to throw the door wide open to opportunity. No matter what the definition, Naples Illustrated will continue to be your style gnomon, the part of the sundial that casts a shadow, based on a Greek word meaning “indicator,” “one who discerns,” or “that which reveals.” It’s just our style.

When it comes to hospice care in Collier County

‘The Final Act of Living Well’

You have a choice

Foundation for End-of-Life Care is changing the way we die

CHOOSE compassionate care right in the home.

CHOOSE the professionals who have been caring for patients in Florida for 32 years.

CHOOSE VITAS. VITAS brings hospice care right to our patients’ homes, even when symptoms require Intensive Comfort Care®. Our inpatient hospice unit at Physicians Regional Medical Center-Pine Ridge is a home away from home for patients who temporarily cannot be cared for in their homes.

239.649.2300 • 866.928.4827 VITAS.com

He was homeless in Collier County, and terminally ill. When he came onto service with VITAS Innovative Hospice Care®, he was placed in a nursing home with only the clothes on his back. VITAS hospice aide Sharon Whyte applied to the Foundation for End-of-Life Care and received a gift card to a discount store to buy her patient a wardrobe. And therein lies the mission of the Foundation for End-of-Life Care: Our goal is to transform dying into the final act of living well. The non-profit Foundation was established in 1999 to fund services that lie outside the realm of hospice care but are critical to the comfort or peace of mind of patients and their families. While VITAS was the founding supporter, the Foundation addresses the special needs of any hospice patient. In 2009, the Foundation approved 1,309 grants totaling $469,684 to assist 826 hospice patients with everything from grocery money to travel arrangements that brought a loved one to a patient’s bedside.

sharing of best-practice caregiving models. And it helps the Hospice Foundation of America implement clergy-to-clergy services, grief counseling and the annual National Bereavement Teleconference. The Foundation for End-of-Life Care relies on donations and bequests for funds. “Many of the donations come from VITAS patients’ families,” says Pippa Steinhart, general manager of VITAS in Collier County. “It was wonderful to receive funds from the Foundation in August for an air conditioner for a patient living in a mobile home in Immokalee. But it was that much nicer to know the money had been donated by families who had had good experiences with VITAS.”

But the Foundation reaches beyond individual patients. Its mission statement continues: We are committed to…supporting fundamental societal change through research, education and advocacy.

The Foundation has made good experiences possible for many Collier County patients and families—like the proud man who had helped build his Habitat for Humanity home. When terminal illness kept him from working, his mortgage and utility bills went unpaid. Last summer his VITAS team realized he needed more than medical attention. They contacted the Foundation for money to pay the mortgage and electric bill for a month. “He was so grateful,” says his VITAS nurse. “You could see his health improve. I think he literally breathed easier.”

To that end, the Foundation funds studies at hospices, teaching hospitals and academic research centers. It is a founding benefactor of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life. It makes grants to hospice providers to facilitate the development and

“The Foundation is a life-saver,” confirms Lori Reardon, VITAS social worker. “I first see what other family or community resources are available. But when those resources have been exhausted, the Foundation often— and quickly—comes through.”

VERY VOLLBRACHT Michael Vollbracht is a renaissance man with ties to Third Street South. The designer has been in and out of the fashion world throughout his life. He’s also the illustrator credited with creating Bloomingdale’s iconic brown shopping bag, as well as the female figure serving as the logo for the Third Street South area. A fine artist represented by the Wally Findlay Galleries, Vollbracht is back in fashion, selling his own line through trunk shows at Saks Fifth Avenue, and a lower end line to be featured soon on the Home Shopping Network. He will be in Naples for a lecture and fashion show in the tent at the Naples Art & Antiques Show at Trinity-by-the-Cove Church March 4 (naplesantiqueshow.org). Vollbracht will also have a trunk show at Saks in Waterside Shops March 4 and 5. —Kathy Becker

LUCKY CHARM

Ruggedly handsome actor Greg Vaughan, famous for his role as Lucky Spencer on the soap General Hospital, lends his looks and legs to NAMI, serving as Grand Marshall for the eighth NAMI Walks for the Minds of America March 20. Vaughn recently landed a recurring guest role on the TV show 90210. We chatted with People magazine’s 2002 Sexiest Man Alive about his career. —Kat Smith ■ Tell us about your charity efforts. Many people take for granted the gifts we all have. This event [NAMI] just touched me. If I can stand in the light for a second and support something like this, it’s a great thing. … I’m just a kid who had a dream and followed his heart, and I’ve had great success. I’m just glad I’m able to do what I do and find ways to give back. ■ What has been your toughest professional challenge? While I was on General Hospital, playing someone who had an addiction to hydrocodone. Becoming aware of that, and going to AA meetings, seeing other people’s struggles, and just the research that it took. I lost 20 pounds; I went through a physical change, but I was also in a darkness. It was very emotionally and physically challenging for me. ■ What dream role would you like? James Bond. It would have to be my own version. I loved Sean Connery. I also like the Matt Damon character, Jason Bourne. I like that kind of leading guy… the action, but something more of a deep political thriller with action.

They were also co-captains of the school’s cross country and track teams. The girls were members of CSN’s two-time state champion cross country team, and state champion 4x800-meter relay team in track. Taylor earned the Naples Daily News 2009 Winged Foot Award, and Chandler earned Academic All State honors. The sisters now attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they are both on the cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams. Although currently undecided on a major, both young women are considering math, engineering and economics. —C.W.

EQUESTRIAN QUEST Tania Siniard and Steve DiCarlo are passionate about horses. The business partners show and train hunters and jumpers at Cavallino Farms at the Triple V Ranch Equestrian Center in Naples. Their training program stresses sportsmanship and teamwork with horses and other riders, as well as personal excellence. While the Cavallino Farms show team has earned numerous ribbons, there is much more than the competition itself. “Real blue ribbons aren’t won in the show arena, but at home during hours of work and dedication,” Siniard says. “And the greatest satisfaction of all comes from the connection riders feel when they and their horses begin to think and move as one.” “Not only do horses teach us how to get along with nature,” DiCarlo says, “they also allow people to overcome obstacles and reach goals in life.” —C.W. 46 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

ART AND SOUL

Culture and spirituality merge in the Balinese town of Ubud. BY DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS

In the book Eat, Pray, Love, author Elizabeth Gilbert paints a picture of a verdant Eden in Bali where authentic spiritual teachers and healers mingle with tourists and expats looking to find, or reinvent, themselves. It’s appropriate that the Love portion of the title refers to this tiny Indonesian island, because the reference couldn’t be more appropriate. There is much here to love, and though the once-pristine paradise has long since been discovered, the vibrancy of the culture is irresistible. Ubud, the little artists’ colony in the island’s interior where the final portion of Gilbert’s memoir is set, has managed to maintain its identity and charm despite the onslaught of tourism. Set in the midst of terraced rice fields, where strawhatted farmers work the land on misty mornings, the town is known as the spiritual home of the Balinese arts, from painting and silversmithing to music and dance. Everywhere you turn there is an artist’s workshop or a Barong performance. I contemplate this as I stand on the terrace of the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, watching a group of young girls move rhythmically to the sounds of traditional Balinese instruments. Their headdresses, delicately crafted of tooled leather and frangipani blossoms, shimmer and quiver to the beat. With swan-like movements and wide eyes they tell the story of lost princesses and fallen kings. All the while, the sounds of tiny gongs, cymbals and the xylophone-like gamelan harmonize with the rushing waters of the Ayung River. The hotel, one of two Four Seasons properties on the island (the other is on Jimbaran Bay), is itself a work of art. On the approach, it doesn’t look like a hotel at all. You first encounter a lotus pond, in the midst of which is a bowl of fire, with a footbridge above the water. It isn’t a pond, exactly, but rather the roof of the main hotel, an elliptical structure

that cascades down a hillside to the river’s edge. You descend to the lobby, and on down to the restaurants, spa and library. The architectural theme of descent is repeated in the villas, which are sprawled across 18 acres of gardens. The roof is a pond, and steps lead down to the villa itself. Decorated in a contemporary Asian style, each villa’s simplicity is warmed by teak furnishings and Indonesian textiles. Private plunge pools and outdoor showers allow guests to connect with the outdoors, which plays a significant role in the Sayan experience. By design, every road leads to a pond, or a jewel of a garden, or the shores of the Ayung.

It’s hard not to feel the spirituality to which Gilbert was referring. There is a meditative quality in Ubud, owed as much to the peaceful surroundings as to the artistic leanings of its denizens. In a woodcarving workshop, the artist looks serene as he chips away at a teak log that will ultimately become a sculpture of a mythical garuda bird. In a tiny roadside theater, a puppeteer practices a disappearing art: performing scenes from the epic Ramakien with antique shadow puppets. Even the homes, with their carved wood doorways and temple-like architecture, look like works of art. Gilbert’s memoir may have turned the spotlight onto Ubud, but the town’s character isn’t changed for it. Life—and art— happen as always: languidly, blissfully and with reverence for tradition. fourseasons. com/sayan ◆

GERMAN CON BRIO AUDI SQUEEZES A LAMBORGHINI V-10 INTO THE ENGINE BAY OF ITS R8 SUPERCAR. THE RESULT? MAGNIFICO.

BY HOWARD WALKER

52 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Think of it loosely as mixing a little Gewürztraminer and Asti Spumante. Audi’s latest iteration of its sensational R8 supercar— the new R8 V-10 5.2 FSI Quattro—gives the best of both. It’s what happens when you take an R8—one of the most gorgeous creations to roll on four wheels— and swap the Audi-built V-8 with a hot-tempered Lamborghini V-10 spark-ignition engine that is similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo V-10. Bellissimo! Why would Audi engineers do that? Because they can. The burgeoning Audi AG owns Lamborghini, so, in oversimplified terms, it was just a matter of Fritz calling up Luigi, ordering a batch of V-10s from the Lamborghini parts store, and modifying them to fit. It’s not as if the R8 was in desperate need of an injection of increased power. Its standard 4.2-liter V-8 has at its disposal a corral of 420 thoroughbred horses that can thrust the aluminum-bodied R8 toward the horizon with the urgency of the starship Enterprise going into warp speed. For those few sports-car aficionados who live by the mantra that too much power is never quite enough, the 525 horsepower from the Lamborghini V-10 is just what the good doctor ordered. And it’s an absolutely intoxicating combo. Whereas

the V-8 is all big biceps and aural muscle, the V-10 screams to an insane 8,700-rpm redline, hitting the high notes like Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma. For the stopwatch clickers, those extra 105 horses and two additional cylinders mean the difference between hurtling from standstill to 60 mph in a

breathtaking 3.7 seconds instead of a slightly less breathtaking 4.4 seconds. Not that from behind the wheel you’re going to notice the difference; V-8 or V-10, your body is still going to be compressed into the back of the seat and your eyelids peeled back like you’ve been riding an F-16 on full afterburner. Of course, with the R8’s standard Quattro all-wheel drive, there are no smoke-belching burnouts as the rear wheels fight for grip. With all four 19-inch Pirellis grabbing the blacktop like Velcro on velvet, the R8 just lunges off the line. Yet despite this over-serving of Italian horsepower, the R8 remains a pussycat to drive—albeit a cougar on caffeine. It’s happy to chug along in rush-hour traffic, or do the run to the grocery store. And unlike so many hard-core supercars, the R8’s suspension soaks up lumps and bumps like a Lexus. Its cockpit too is the height of civility. It’s easy to climb in and out without needing a course in limbo dancing, and there’s no shortage of leg- or headroom for the vertically enhanced. In true Audi fashion, the quality of the fixtures and fittings is stunning—the simplicity and clarity of the instruments, the tactile beauty of its salami-thick steering wheel and knurled-edged gear shifter. Gorgeous. Speaking of gears, you have the option of a six-speed manual shifter or a six-speed R-tronic manual-automatic. Unless you’re desperate for the car to do the shifting for you, stick with the manual. You can read a chapter of War & Peace in the time it takes for the automatic to change gears, whereas the manual has the click-click precision of flicking on a light switch. To have a little Italian soul in your Teutonic Audi will cost you $146,000 for the six-speed and $155,100 for the R-tronic, while the V-8 six-speed costs $114,200, and the R-tronic $123,300. Make no mistake, though; when the tachometer needle spins toward that soaring redline and you feel the punch of 525 Italian stallions, it’ll have you singing like Luciano. ◆

WELL-AGED Former Miami Dolphins football Head Coach Don Shula is known for longevity. He recently celebrated his eightieth birthday. His 1972 Miami Dolphins record-setting undefeated season still stands. He was head coach for 33 years, 26 with the Dolphins, and is the winningest NFL coach ever, with 347 career victories. Add to those records Shula’s Steak House at the Hilton Naples & Towers. Shula opened his first restaurant in Miami in 1989. The Naples Shula’s opened in February 2000 and has remained a popular destination for prime beef in the sometimes challenging Naples restaurant scene. Naples is also an occasional destination for Shula himself, for restaurant events and golf tournaments organized by 1972 Dolphins quarterback and Naples resident Earl Morrall. This year’s tournament, celebrating its tenth anniversary, benefits children’s charities and the Jackson Laboratory. It starts with a dinner March 14 at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, and the tournament is March 15 at The Golf Lodge at The Quarry.

GOOD STOCK When Bentley Village celebrates is twentyfifth anniversary in April, it will undoubtedly be in a tasteful way. The 156-acre, country club–style retirement community has five kitchens to serve 50,000 to 53,000 creative meals a month during season, crafted since 1996 by Executive Chef Ed Padden and the community’s other Culinary Institute of America–trained chefs. Fresh stock is made on-site daily from scratch in 55-gallon pots to form soups and sauces. The chefs also make their own breads and pastries, as well as ice cream, with a changing selection of 16 specialty flavors plus whole-bean vanilla. Prospective residents are invited to Chef’s Table events to get a taste of dishes the community kitchens offer, including mashed red and purple Okinawan sweet potatoes, and goat cheese and pesto on a grilled sun-dried tomato panini. The focus is not only on flavor, but on wellness too. Most of the community’s culinary staff are certified dietary managers who focus on healthy eating.

AHOY! There’s no better place to celebrate the rich history of boating than at the Naples Yacht Club, founded in 1947. Naples artist Paul Arsenault’s 72-foot mural was recently unveiled in the club’s Yardarm dining room. It depicts landmarks including the Gordon’s Pass Fish Camp, Naples City Dock, Port Royal boathouses and Crayton Cove. The mural fits into the club’s guiding principle of “preserving historical tradition while building for the future.” The yacht club recently completed the first phase of a multiyear renovation by creating a two-story addition designed by Naples architect David Humphrey to the club’s 1960 location on Naples Bay. 58 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

McCabe’s Irish Pub & Grill

NEWCOMERS Seasonal residents are always looking for what’s new and worthy of exploring when they return to the area. A couple of places to note: Decanted, Naples’ newest wine shop and tasting bar, at the southwest corner of Pine Ridge and Goodlette-Frank roads. The bar also offers microbrews and imported beers, sake, and wine accessories and equipment. Events will be held for Inner Circle members, and a free wine club includes complimentary tastings, wine dinners, classes and private events. Decanted was opened by Bonita Springs residents Al Fialkovich and Jessica Palmer, who were inspired by Napa tasting room experiences. The landmark McCabe’s Irish Pub & Grill added four high-definition televisions, a digital sports entertainment package and new menu items to make the authentic pub appealing to sports enthusiasts. Enhancements include Sunday and Monday evening Sportsman Specials, with pitchers of McCabe’s Red Lager and Spicy Irish Wings. Traditional live entertainment continues on Sunday night. The sports features are in addition to the pub’s deep Irish roots, re-created in the spring of 1997 by a company north of Dublin, which copied every detail of an authentic Irish pub and brought the pieces in containers to be assembled by six Irish journeymen and two painters on the ground floor of The Inn on Fifth. Cachaça is the national drink of Brazil. Nearly 1.5 billion liters are produced each year, making it the third most popular spirit in the world. Like some types of rum, cachaça is distilled from sugarcane, and is available in both light and gold versions. Lighter colored cachaça is mass-produced in column stills, bottled without aging, and primarily used in cocktails. The amber variety is made in small pot stills, like Cognac, and aged in various types of wood barrels before release. This type of artisan cachaça has become enormously popular in the United States over the past few years. “I wanted to introduced a truly premium cachaça to this country, one that reflected the Brazilian heritage in the right way,” says Matti Anttila, founder and owner of Cabana Cachaça. Anttila worked in Brazil after college and discovered the spirit. When he returned to this country and couldn’t find it, he decided to create his own. “I found a distillery that was small, innovative and had great quality control. We spent some time refining the formula, and launched the brand in June of 2006.” A single-estate cachaça, Cabana is double-distilled and aged for nine months in native Brazilian barrels. The result is a spirit that is rounder and smoother on the palate than most, with a refined taste profile and light citrus notes. It is typical of the small-batch cachaça that Americans have begun to find so intriguing. Connoisseurs seek out brands such as Rochinha, which has been made on the same small farm since 1902; aged in oak casks, it is available in five- or 12-year-old versions.

cocktail culture in this country is changing the pattern, as more Americans prefer to make their cocktails with smoother, aged cachaça. Purists drink it from a snifter, and find it to be as satisfying as premium rum, tequila or Cognac. ◆ Mark Spivak is the author of spivakonwine.com. He can be reached at Niedit@naplesillustrated.com. Cachaça is distilled from sugarcane.

GRM, which is matured in three different varieties of wood and is said to resemble a premium tequila añejo, also has quite a cult following. Since 1840, the local arririba wood of southern Brazil has provided the solera system that makes Armazem Vieira both unique and exceptional; its rare 16year-old cachaça can easily fetch $125, if you can find it. Beleza Pura was created by Olie Berlic, a former sommelier at Manhattan’s Gotham Bar and Grill, who tasted more than 800 cachaças before creating his own. He swears that his product is so clean and natural that it’s impossible to get a hangover from drinking it, but this claim hasn’t been scientifically verified. Premium cachaça has arrived in the States partly as a result of the influence of Leblon, a brand created in Brazil in 2005. Gilles Merlet, a master blender from Cognac, is responsible for making the spirit in small copper pot stills and aging it in XO Cognac casks. Bacardi recently invested in the company, which has helped catapult Leblon into the mainstream. In part, the cachaça craze can be traced to the popularity of the caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. The drink is essentially a mojito without the mint. To make one, muddle half a large lime together with two teaspoons of sugar; add several ounces of cachaça and a cup of ice, and shake vigorously. The caipirinha is turning up at clubs around the nation and is a fixture of Brazilian restaurants, where it is sometimes prepared on carts that are rolled through the dining room. Traditionally, Brazilians used industrial cachaça in caipirinhas, but the booming MARCH 2010 61

the mystic PANACHE DESAI Since he was a child, Panache Desai has been gradually building spiritual awakening through sessions that he started with 20 to 30 people. He now draws more than 150 attendees per session throughout the United States. Since marrying Neapolitan Jan Goldsmith in December 2008 and adding her marketing expertise to his mission, he has expanded his tour schedule and website. In one month in Florida, he visited 20 cities. Desai’s primary message is that people are okay the way they are. “It’s about coming into loving acceptance of themselves,” he says. “They wake up and see how loved, accepted, awesome, supported, elevated and encouraged they are.” Next year, he plans to expand to more places. “From this it will go global itself. This is the only country populated by people from all over the world.” ON TIME OR TARDY? “I’m English. I’m on time. the entrepreneurs STEVE KRAMER & KATHY ELLIS More than seven years ago, Kathy Ellis, 50, a licensed esthetician, started concocting cosmetics and beauty products in her kitchen. She had great merchandise, but didn’t know how to market it. Enter her boyfriend, Swiss-born Steve, 42, a computer programmer whom she met on match.com. He showed her how to sell on eBay. They dabbled in traditional retail with Spa Excel for a few years, but the online business outgrew their ability to handle orders. Now the couple’s business, coastalscents.com, has contracted with overseas manufacturing plants and has a distribution center in Naples. Started with about $2,000, the enterprise has become a multimillion-dollar cosmetics company. For three years they worked seven days a week with no salary, but they now employ many, including Kathy’s sister and brother. ON TIME OR TARDY? “Always five minutes early,” Steve says. “To be late is disrespectful.” TITLE OF LIFE STORY: Swiss Meets West or Technology Meets Creativity LEARNING CURVE: “I could write a book about how not to open a business. So many things happened we never expected,” Steve says.

the phoenix HEATHER PHILLIPS Heather Phillips thought she was in “heaven” in the late 1990s when she worked her way up to managing the upscale Heaven Cigar Bar in Naples. She was, until owner/financier David Mobley was arrested for a multimillion-dollar investment scam and the bar closed. The unemployed Phillips decided to take the bar’s vanilla-flavored Heaven cigar and make a business out of it, using a $20 Wal-Mart phone, an old computer and the few contacts she walked away with. She bought the rights to the name, developed a marketing plan that included beautiful promotional models, and grew the business to include 14 different flavors. She moved from her spare bedroom to a 3,200-square-foot distribution center and office in Naples, expanded her staff to 12, including outside sales reps, and this summer launched Red Lion, the company’s first full-flavored cigar made with tobacco from five countries. She’s working on international distribution as well as an organic infused cigar, finding success long after the 1990s cigar boom fizzled. ON TIME OR TARDY? “I strive to be on time, but typically, I’m always tardy. It’s something I’m working on.” LEARNING CURVE: “More like a slope. I’m not a person who picks up a manual or a book. I’m definitely a hands-on, visual learner.” HIDDEN TALENTS: “I’m very seaworthy. I grew up on Cape Romano and took a boat to school. I can race through the Ten Thousand Islands on instinct alone.”

the queen of hearts APRIL MASINI When April Masini dropped out of college to go to New York and start her modeling and acting career, she auditioned for The Actors Studio, not realizing the program was a collaboration with The New School’s masters-level theater program. She was accepted. “It never occurred to me to be scared. I didn’t know.” From there she got a role in the soap All My Children. She was married from 1995 to 2000 to Al Masini, the creator of Entertainment Tonight, Star Search and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, who taught her about the television industry. They moved to Hawaii, where Al retired and April ran Al Masini Productions and Masini Television & Film. After working with Al on Baywatch, Miss Universe and Pacific Blue, she was asked by the Learning Annex in Los Angeles to teach a class on how to date a model. The class sold out in two hours. “I’m an accidental advice giver,” she says. Four years ago she wrote her first of four books about dating, and has since written 1,500 columns for her advice site, askapril.com, ranked the No. 1 relationship advice column by Google. She produced the film Blue Crush, has been a movie screener for industry awards for six years, has optioned the show Mistresses of the Rich and Famous, and is developing a TV program called The Love Judge. ON TIME OR TARDY? “On time, unless I’m lost. I’m chronically lost.” TITLE OF LIFE STORY: Why Not Me? MOTTO: “Beauty fades, dumb is forever. Beach and Sea CARYN AND BILL SCHUMAN CREATE AN OASIS ON THE SHORE. BY KATHY BECKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG THOMPSON

Bill and Caryn Schuman have known for decades what Naples is about, having visited the area for 23 years. “My in-laws were here, and each year we would take our young children at the time to stay with their grandparents,” Caryn says. “It was always our dream to buy a house of our own.” A few years ago they bought a designer-ready unit in Trieste at Bay Colony, loving the expansive views, including The Ritz-Carlton on the beach on one side and The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort on the other. Their home serves as a vacation getaway while Bill works as an attorney in Chicago. In a few years it will become a seasonal residence, where their three daughters may one day visit with their children. MARCH 2010 91

NICK SHIRGHIO

“The location and the views are what interested the Schumans,” says Jenny Lind Carter, president of K2 Design Group, Bonita Springs. “They wanted something unique.” The process started with finding an interior designer who could fulfill their dream, with a modern aesthetic. The Schumans interviewed four or five design firms, and found Carter through an advertisement and her work. “We wanted it to be light and airy, not cluttered,” Caryn says. “We took the view and brought it inside, with turquoise water and earthy tones, but more contemporary. We wanted a look we hadn’t seen in a lot of models.” Carter’s challenge was to re-create the space—which already had walls with primer paint, concrete floors and finished bathrooms and kitchen—using existing materials and finishes when they made sense for the overall design. Nearly everything else was custom-created for the Schumans.

The elevator foyer sets the tone. Although it is considered a common space, Carter and the Schumans wanted to make an impression. A backlit offset wall creates a soft glow. A customdesigned table made in Colombia of wenge wood echoes the shape of a round mirror and a circular custom floor mosaic of granite, marble and onyx. A free-form blown-glass light fixture adds a purple accent. The wenge wood appears again in custom furniture in the dining room, with pieces accented by light laminated goatskin that’s almost like an acrylic. Caryn says the goatskin was definitely a unique material. “We took Jenny’s guidance,” she says. “She has a good eye for unusual things and putting them together.” A delicate crystal chandelier and sconces provide a contrast to the dark wood in the dining room. “The light fixtures take the standard Queen Anne chandelier with crystal and make it linear,” Carter says.

Clockwise from top left: Caryn and Bill Schuman enjoy the views and the weather at their Naples home. Jenny Carter changed the original peninsula counter to an island to make the kitchen more open. The Schumans continue to add accessories to their home, and changed the picture shown here in the dining room for another.

The Schumans collected most of the art and accessories. Some of the art came from a gallery Caryn’s sister had; others were found in the area. While in Sedona, the Schumans fell in love with a glass sculpture by Dino Rosin from Murano, Italy, and were delighted to find one at New River Fine Art in Naples. “It was our first art purchase in Naples,” Caryn says. They commissioned a painting for the dining room that didn’t work for that spot. They thought they found a replacement at The Keg Steakhouse & Bar in Naples, where Caryn fell in love with an abstract painting by Josiane Childers. The manager wouldn’t sell the piece, but put her in touch with the gallery it came from, and eventually the artist created another painting for the restaurant so that the Schumans could have the work they loved. “We joke with our friends that they might smell steak and potatoes in the dining room,” Caryn says. “I saw it, loved it and had to have it.”

For shelves in the dining room, the couple found three wooden pots with quartz tops by Steven Potts at the Bonita Beach Art Festival. “We’ve been gathering things,” Caryn says. “Even when I’m in Chicago, I’m drawn to things that would work out at our home in Naples.” The wenge wood and goatskin were also used for custom furniture in the master suite. In the master bathroom, Carter used the original vanities, but added new fronts and hardware. She also kept the shower and tub, but re-plated the fixtures. Mirror frames were created, and Italian mosaic tile was added in long, thin strips behind the tub and on the floor. In the more casual areas of the home, Carter used grain-filled and treated white oak for cabinets and walls. Just inside the entry, a sliding wall by Raleo made in Costa Rica features wood pellets to create texture and movement. The wall conceals storage. The same finish is used in alternating rectangles of white oak on the enterMARCH 2010 93

tainment wall in the living room, where another sliding wall conceals a small wet bar. Furnishings are modern Italian, with accents in teal and turquoise. The effect is calming, like the sea and sand, where the Schumans like to spend their time when they are in Naples. “Our two favorite things are walking on the beach, with the dolphins and diving pelicans, and walks along Clam Bay estuary, where you never know what you are going to see,” Caryn says. “For us, it’s heaven, and we wanted to bring that inside.” Carter was told by building professionals she couldn’t remove a peninsula bar area in the kitchen to create an island, but she was able to run plumbing under the floor. The kitchen palette was set by the green and blue granite with a bold fossil pattern selected for the countertops. White oak was used for the custom cabinets. The backsplash, with raku-style glazed clay subway tile in shades that complement the counters, is the same one Carter has in her own home. 94 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

What makes the kitchen and breakfast area perfect for eventual visits by children and grandchildren are the leather stools and bay window breakfast nook banquette, made with buttery, waterproof light-blue leather. “We will be having visitors, family members, younger children,” Caryn says. “We want to be able to live there, so if someone is covered in sunscreen, we want them to be able to sit down and have a drink without taking a shower.” The office, created so that Bill can work while he’s in Naples, also acknowledges the future. The computer screen doubles as a television, and the sofa pulls out to a bed. For now, the Schumans have been enjoying their home as a getaway. “We aren’t there long enough to really be huge entertainers, but we are starting to have people visit and entertaining that way,” Caryn says. “I have two ovens and have yet to use them, because we still love going out to restaurants. But friends and family are lining up to visit.” ◆

JUKEBOX HEROES

The Naples Music Festival, the biennial blockbuster party on Third Street South to benefit the Garden of Hope and Courage, rocks the town March 21, bringing three bands, food and drinks, and dancing in the street. Hard-rocking Foreigner will play past hits, like “Hot-Blooded” and “Cold as Ice,” plus music from the new album, Can’t Slow Down. The Spinners bring classic R&B vocals, while high-energy Powerhouse returns with its potent horn section. There will be cool VIP lounges decked out by local designers, and VIP seats will be at Sea Salt for the first time, added to Campiello, Tommy Bahama, Handsome Harry’s Bistro and Ridgway Bar & Grill. The “Living on a Prayer” Raffle will include 10 club-level tickets, courtesy of PNC Bank, to see Bon Jovi at the Bank Atlantic Center, with a Campiello-catered limo ride aboard the Marino Group’s VIP Limousine Coach. Money raised is used for care of the garden on the NCH Healthcare System’s Naples campus. The talent draws crowds, but “not enough people know the garden is there,” says Amy Lane, garden executive director. “It’s first and foremost for the patients, but it’s for the whole community.” For general admission and VIP tickets: 239-434-6697, naplesmusicfestival.org. —Kat Smith

MARCH 2010 ADMIRING DIANA Princess Diana is widely remembered for her efforts to bring international attention to landmines, AIDS and other issues, while her charisma and personal style continue to fascinate fans around the globe. Admirers can learn more about Diana this month, when the Naples Art Association brings events featuring the Princess of Wales’ dresses and other royal memorabilia to the von Liebig Art Center. The exhibit Princess Diana: Dresses of Inspiration opens with a preview reception on March 12, and runs through June 27. Highlights include 20 dresses, shoes and a doll collection. As an exhibit curated with individual owners, several items have never been displayed before and visitors will hear new personal stories. On March 10, the Princess Diana: Dresses of Inspiration Legacy of Giving Gala, inspired by the princess’s compassionate spirit, will raise funds for local charities Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Inc. and the NCH Mammogram Foundation. The evening includes a meet-and-greet with the owners of the gowns, a gourmet dinner and a raffle. Darren McGrady, who spent 15 years in royal service to Queen Elizabeth, shares insights about Princess Diana with his lecture “Dining Like Diana: Stories from Her Personal Chef,” March 13 at the von Liebig Art Center, and March 14 at the Jolly Cricket restaurant. The latter includes a brunch with items featured in McGrady’s cookbook, Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen. As for why Diana’s popularity endures, Ginamarie Pugliese, assistant director of the von Liebig Art Center, says, “As a girl, I watched Diana’s wedding on television. There’s still a mystique; every girl wishes to be a princess. The nonprofit and charity work she did spurs others in the field to keep giving. Diana was a forerunner, a groundbreaker.” For information: 239-262-6517, ext. 115; naplesart.org. —Kat Smith

THAT’S ITALIAN! Marissa Collections, the Italian Trade Commission and Harper’s Bazaar will celebrate classic Italian style March 11 with food, fashion and jewelry at Marissa Collections. Named a Harper’s Bazaar Style Leader since the list’s inception, Marissa Collections was selected by the Hearst Corp. and the Italian Trade Commission as one of 10 stores of 150 nationwide participating in the promotion to host the special cultural events as part of a campaign to promote Italian products. The campaign started in September with advertising (“If you speak fashion, you speak Italian”) and a kick-off event in New York. Another part of the effort was to take representatives of 55 retailers to Italy to meet new designers, go to the showrooms and experience Italian culture. Jay Hartington of Marissa Collections went to see the fashion shows in Milan, where he discovered designers Frederica Rettore and Pellini for the store. “We re-looked at a few vendors that were reinventing their brand—for example, Gianfranco Ferre and Fratelli Rossi,” Hartington says. “We will most likely bring them in over the next year.” The party at Marissa Collections will highlight Italian food, wine and style, with food by Campiello, Italian liquors and models in clothing by Italian designers, including Brunello Cucinelli and Valentino. GIVING BACK

HAVE A HEART BY CHRISTINA WELLS

Four years ago, Kathy Friday collapsed from cardiac arrest while working out at Quail West Country Club. Quick action by her trainer, who knew cardiopulmonary resuscitation, plus the availability of an on-site automated external defibrillator (AED), saved her life. The story has a very happy ending. Last April, a healthy Kathy and her husband, Fritz, donated $300,000 to the American Heart Association to ensure that every Collier County Sheriff vehicle is equipped with an AED. The Fridays are long-established humanitarians. Fritz’s family created the Friday Foundation in Wisconsin, which helped build community libraries, sports facilities, vocational schools, hospitals and cultural museums in the various towns in which the family’s canning business operated. Fritz continued and increased the charitable giving throughout his years of running Friday Canning Corp. Now part-time Naples residents, the couple has elected to give back by contributing to Habitat for Humanity, a nursing scholarship for Naples Hospital, Research Chairs at the University of Wisconsin, the Natural History Museum in Cable, Wisconsin, and most recently, the defibrillators for the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. “Fritz and I are big believers in helping where we see the need, be that financially or in like donations of time and effort,” Kathy says. “To have the power to uplift a community, right a wrong, and encourage the next generation to have hope and belief is a power to strive for every day.” The Fridays have thoughtfully chosen their personal role models. Fritz admires the principled President Lincoln, and the philanthropy of Bill Gates and his wife. Kathy’s heroes are all the individuals who make a difference through hard work and devotion to the well-being of others. “The best way to help a community is to be a part of it and do what you can to enhance it,” Kathy says. “We have attempted to pass this they have reached out to their respective areas with time and money as well.” ◆
