From the Publisher

This year Naples Illustrated launched a new custom magazine, Dine239. A celebration of dining, the guide has been embraced by visitors and residents. With distribution at hotels and resorts around the area, our seasonal guests get a vivid look at the bourgeoning restaurant scene on the Paradise Coast—which is still a fitting nickname for the area, even if El Niño has delivered an extra large dose of precipitation this year. It’s much better being here than watching snowdrifts pile up. Our annual visitors have been packing the boutiques from uptown to downtown, along with the golf courses and restaurants all over the area during their well-deserved vacation time. For the locals, however, daily business surges ahead unabated. The March issue of Naples Illustrated is historically one of our largest in both editorial and advertising content. As I write this just days before going to press, the phones continue to ring as clients request additional advertising space and test the definition of the word “deadline.” It pleases me greatly to know the stories we publish, and the audience we serve, are valued by the community at large. Our publications and website are trusted resources for what is current and trending in and around Naples. Print—that most reliable medium—is alive and well in Southwest Florida. Two years ago we launched a concerted effort to increase the number of Naples Illustrated subscribers. This year we have surpassed 18,500—a significant number in our small but growing City of Naples, and the total continues to rise. Circulation now exceeds 30,000 copies per issue on average. In a busy month like March, the print run grows to nearly 33,000. These increases allow the magazine to reach an influential and even more diverse readership throughout the Naples area. This area is no longer simply a seasonal getaway. It has grown in both year-round population and its influence on the future of all Southwest Florida. As challenged as we are by a few more weeks of busy streets and full reservation books, we know these visitors and seasonal guests hold the key to the future growth and success of Naples. It’s a future we at Naples Illustrated embrace and look forward to being a part of for many years to come.

It’s no surprise that Naples is a small town with an enormous heart. Philanthropists in our community personify the popular saying “to give is to receive.” Take Jay and Patty Baker. There is no mistaking the joie de vivre on their faces when making a charitable donation, whether it’s raising a paddle at an auction or gifting millions of dollars in one fell swoop— and then turning around to give again and again. The Bakers have been planting the seeds of philanthropy in Naples for more than 20 years and watching the community transform with their financial nourishment. In this issue, we profile the Bakers as they announce their latest gift exclusively to NI in “To Naples, With Love,” which begins on page 76. You’ll see how the couple’s passions and compassion are aligned, for each other as much as for the community. In a sentimental gesture during the cover photo shoot, Patty Baker disappeared for a moment, and returned to be photographed wearing a pair of red pumps. Her wide smile hinted that there was a story behind those shoes. Indeed. As it turns out, she bought them just before her first date with Jay. She was an hour late for the date because of a shoe sale. That was 30 years ago. They still chuckle at the memory, and the fact that she still has those red shoes, which now grace our cover. Speaking of grace, it’s time again to shine the spotlight on “Leading Ladies,” our annual feature that profiles five exceptional women in our community. While these women range widely in experience and profession, from entrepreneurs to business executives to philanthropists, they are similarly remarkable in that they have each seized opportunities to embrace our community in inspiring ways. Turn to page 84 to find out who we’re honoring this year. Carpe diem!

BILL ENGVALL

Find more laughs with Bill Engvall at naples illustrated.com/Engvall

The Guy Next Door When you see Bill Engvall live, the good-natured persona he projects is the real deal. The person on stage, he says, is the same guy you see at the mall, the library, or the gas station. When people see his show, he wants them to feel like they are sitting in their living room and he’s the funny guy doing the talking. The comedian and actor will bring his laid-back comedy show to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers March 29. (239-481-4849; bbmannpah.com) —Kat Smith NI: What influences your material these days? Engvall: My wife, Gail, and I built a house. I’m going to market a new bumper sticker: “If you think you know your spouse, build a house.” When you buy a house, you don’t think about stuff like drawer pulls and towel bars because they are just there. When you have to go and pick them, it just sucks. I also talk about the last year, which wasn’t great health-wise. After being on Dancing With the Stars, I had to have my knee replaced, so I talk about that. After that, I got kidney stones, and then I got shingles. I told my wife I didn’t even want to go to the doctor anymore. I’m afraid they’re going to look at me and say, “Just sell him for parts.“ What else have you been working on? I’ve been doing a lot of independent films. I did one the year before last called Catching Faith, a little family faithbased movie. I just did another, coming out at Christmas this year, where I play a down-on-his-luck street-corner Santa. A week after, I flew to Mississippi and shot a movie that is just going to shock people. It’s not a comedy. I play a killer. I always want to do things that stretch me and stretch the way people think about me. Any plans to write another book? Not as of yet. That little book I wrote, Just a Guy (St. Martin’s Press, first edition, 2007), unfortunately came out the same time as my television show. I said, ‘Don’t release it at the same time because it’s going to get buried in the media.’ That was a good book, and I wish more people had a chance to read it. I wanted to tell people that even those with normal lives can have an interesting story. You don’t have to have been beaten or a drug abuser or whatever. I wanted to say it’s okay to be normal.

GIVING BACK:

For more than 11 years, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a 40-foot-long clinic on wheels operated by Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida, has provided free dental, medical, and vision care to the underprivileged children of Collier County. But when Richard Craven, who sits on the Care Mobile advisory council, learned in late 2014 just how great was the need for similar care among adults, he and his wife, Ginger, pledged to help Healthcare Network purchase a second care mobile that would treat entire families. Thanks to the Cravens’ gift of $300,000, the Health & Smiles Care Mobile will hit the road this month. The original mobile clinic sees nearly 2,800 patients annually, and the new mobile unit will have a similar capacity. “There are so many more in need, and with a mobile unit you can go to schools, you can go wherever the need is,” says Ginger, who first began visiting Naples with her husband 40 years ago. The need is indeed great. More than 65,000 adults in the county don’t have primary dental care, and, in 2013, more than 18,000 sought dental care at emergency rooms. To address the urgency, the new care mobile will be on the road four to five days a week, visiting community centers, schools, YMCAs, and even residential areas. The Cravens got involved with Healthcare Network in the spring of 2014 at the organization’s annual golf tournament and fundraiser, where they committed to cover the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile’s operating expenses. But the Cravens’ latest gift took Steve Wheeler, Healthcare Network’s vice president of development, by surprise. For many years, the Cravens, who moved to Naples from Minneapolis in the early 2000s, donated only to Christian organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and their church, St. John the Evangelist. Wheeler asked why the couple was now donating so much money to Healthcare Network. Richard replied, “Ginger and I decided that if what you’re doing isn’t God’s work, then we don’t know what God’s work is.” «

Growth

Better agriculture is growing on State Road 29 just north of Immokalee. The University of Florida Southwest Florida Research & Education Center recently completed a $2 million expansion, with three new labs and offices for six new faculty members. The center serves as a tool for growers, farmers, and other clients in Collier, Charlotte, Glades, Hendry, and Lee counties. The faculty members have expertise in disciplines including agriculture, citrus horticulture, and plant pathology. “The expansion will allow us to bring on some disciplines that this center has never had before,” says Center Director Dr. Calvin Arnold. “We will now be able to house a weed scientist, a microbiologist, and an agricultural engineer.” The expanded facility will allow faculty members to continue research focused on solving a number of horticultural problems affecting Florida as a whole and specifically Southwest Florida. Arnold says the center will help solve problems faced by citrus and vegetable growers, making them more profitable while also better protecting the environment. —C.K.

At age 23, Naples resident Alexa Lindquist was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and has been bravely battling the disease. When a few of her close friends reached out to local business owner Ken Lawson of the Naples Beach Brewery about hosting a fundraiser to help pay the young woman’s medical bills, he and the rest of his team rose to the occasion. They hosted a large group of friends, family, and community members for a night of craft beers, food trucks, and unwavering support. Naples Beach Brewery donated 20 percent of all proceeds from the evening to Lindquist’s medical fund. Lawson also has pledged to donate $1 from every sale of Naples Beach Brewery’s two top selling beers—Line Dropper and Latitude Adjustment—to the fund through the end of April. —Christiana Keyes

It is easier than ever to spoil our furry companions in Naples, thanks to Shear Luxury Pet Styling salon, recently opened by Jennifer Tedaldi and Yoselin Bravo on the corner of Golden Gate Parkway and Goodlette-Frank Road. After working in the industry for several years, the two master groomers decided it was time to create a place of their own. The salon includes two grooming stations, a variety of all-natural primping products, and a menu of lavish services, including fur dyeing, feather extensions, “pawdicures,” facials, even mud baths. Whether you favor an American Kennel Club standard breed clip, a customized cut, or something a bit funkier, your pet will leave the salon in high style.(shearluxurypetstyling.com) —C.K.

Kids Who Care

Who says spare change doesn’t add up? Students at Calusa Park Elementary School in Naples recently raised $2,823 to help 4-year-old Hannah Ahlquist, the daughter of one of the school’s teachers. The little girl was left a quadriplegic after her family’s SUV was hit by a car running a red light. The students raised the money through the Giver Program, which was created by local organization Charity for Change. The 29-week program teaches kids about the importance of giving through in- and afterschool activities. Every six weeks, the children vote on a different charity to help. “In this case, the kids all knew Hannah and her mom, so there was no question that everybody wanted to help her,” says Karen Conley, president and CEO of Charity for Change. To raise money, students brought in their spare change, hosted miniature fundraisers, and earned money by completing math questions and character education puzzles, activities funded by Charity for Change donors. Conley l cipa Prin Lynda adds, “The children are always so Walcott, engaged with the program, and Hannah and Ana it really helps to build their emAhlquist, Karen pathy, compassion, and sense of Conley community.” –Anna Bjorlin

Style TAKE FLIGHT by katherine lande

Air travel has become a chore, but it has roots in romanticism. For Chanel’s Spring 2016 show at Paris Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfeld turned the Grand Palais into a utopian airport, transporting guests to a faraway land— sans security check. Pieces like this handbag ($1,800) and a suite of airplane brooches ($475–$525) reflect Lagerfeld’s love affair with flight. Turn the page for more top trends straight from the spring runways.

Classic Elegance WHO: Hayden Lasher, fashion designer and entrepreneur FAMILY TIES: Great-grandniece of iconic fashion designer Henri Bendel BELGIAN BAGS COLLECTION: A New York-based brand of handbags designed in collaboration with Belgian Shoes, featuring the same structured silhouette, fine Italian leather, and signature bow detailing

BY ANNA BJORLIN NI: Did you always want to go into fashion? Lasher: Yes. My family has deep roots in fashion, and the landscape of our conversations tends to revolve around art, history, and style, so it’s always been a big interest of mine. The idea for the handbags had been in my brain for years. I spent around five years gathering experience. I studied in New York and Paris, and got some professional experience at Michael Kors, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Oscar de la Renta before starting my own line in 2014.

My mother gave me a great sense of color. She mixes and matches colors to make unexpected statements, and that’s what I wanted to do with the bag.

How did Henri Bendel inspire you? His designs transcend time. Looking back at some of his designs now, you see how they’re still relevant today. That’s what I was trying to do with the Belgian Bag—create something that’s classic. It’s not a trend or an overnight sensation but something you can carry for the rest of your life that will always be fashionable and stylish. What sets your brand apart? The bags are handmade in New York, and the quality of the materials we choose are really important. Also, some of our colors are limited-edition, so we only make a certain number of them. I like the idea that the women carrying them can feel the handbags are special and not something many people have. How did you get involved with The Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s Old Bags Luncheon? I’m happy to support an organization that helps prevent and protect women from domestic violence in whatever way I can. I’m donating one of our Belgian Bags, a really beautiful one I figured was best suited for Florida. It’s made of vanilla pebbled leather with pink lambskin piping and has a hot pink suede interior. It goes perfectly with tropical colors.

• After dinner, linger in the Living Room for hot cocoa and conversation. If you’re lucky, Dan Matthews may lead a singalong on his grandfather’s player piano. • Sit on the front porch and watch the hummingbirds gather around the feeders and nectar plants. • Take part in one of the educational talks in The Swag library. t’s just after 7 in the evening, and the sun is about to descend behind the steelgray mountain range in the distance. The clouds have settled among the peaks, and a chill needles the air around the private resort that sits 5,000 feet above sea level. A white-haired gentleman wearing a tweed sport coat walks across the great lawn and greets his guests, who are lounging on Adirondack chairs and admiring the view. There are hugs and laughter, underscoring the feeling of a house party with friends who clearly have been here before. understated luxury. They even have a special name: Swaggers. It’s easy to fathom the lure of this place, which begins at the gated entrance. Press a call button to be granted admission, then drive two and a half miles and 1,000 feet up a winding road before coming to a compound of timber cabins, gazebos, undulating lawns, and a profusion of flowers. All is silent, save for the wing beat of hummingbirds and the song of the wood thrush. Mountain peaks—the Great

It’s a small retreat, and it will stay that way. “We have a good balance,” Dan says. “Folks can get to know each other, if they so choose. We don’t want to ruin that.” Deener handled the design herself, imbuing suites and public areas with the sensibility of the mountains and the sense of sinking into a cashmere blanket—cozy yet luxurious. Her touch is evident everywhere: A watercolorist, Deener has painted several of the landscapes adorning the main house. And every Wednesday, at the top of Gooseberry Knob, she personally hosts a picnic with a huge Southern spread of grilled fare, gorgeous salads, and homemade desserts. The Swag feels special because it was originally conceived as a private residence. Dan and Deener Matthews bought the 250-acre property in the late 1960s and built their summer home with repurposed centuries-old logs from several states. “This was a recycling project in a way, a labor of love,” says Dan, an Episcopalian priest and rector emeritus of New York’s Trinity Church on Wall Street. The Matthews decided to open The Swag to guests in 1982, when they hosted some Knoxville World’s Fair VIPs who were more taken with the views than with the fair itself. They began with a few rooms and evolved into 14 splendidly appointed suites, featuring such elements as copper tubs, outdoor showers, in-room saunas, and stone fireplaces.

Not to be missed is the Swag Bar, a peanut butter-chocolate confection that is the best motivation to hike a few extra miles. Bonjour, Baccarat

The Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York has curated accents and experiences that will make guests feel like French royalty. Here, we outline five must-dos for every roi and reine in training. By Katherine Lande

1

Take part in afternoon tea. There’s no better way to channel your inner Parisian

than to experience an afternoon of high tea. Served daily in the Grand Salon, the Baccarat Hotel’s afternoon tea menu features a delectable list of French teas, sandwiches, and les petites douceurs. For the ultimate Marie Antoinette experience, chase your thé with a glass of Ruinart Champagne.

2

Zip around Manhattan in the Citroën City Car. For the ultimate city experience, take the Baccarat’s vintage 1970 Citroën DS for a spin. It’s by far the chicest way to pick up a dress at Bergdorf’s, meet friends for dinner and drinks, or take in a Broadway show. The chauffeured red sedan will take guests to any destination within 15 blocks of the hotel, so step out and show up in classic French style.

3

Marvel at the crystal Harcourt wall. The Baccarat Hotel’s interior stuns with

bespoke crystal, and no piece is more beguiling than the grand Harcourt Wall. Located behind the hotel’s entrance, the wall comprises 2,000 Harcourt glasses laid horizontally and illuminated with LED panels. Walk by several times throughout the day to see the wall subtly dance with illumination.

4

Coupe De Thrill The shining star of this year’s Detroit auto show, the supercool LC 500 sports coupe injects excitement into the Lexus lineup By Howard Walker We’ve all seen those dreamy auto-show concept cars brimming with blue-sky technology and angry-appliance styling. Lexus pulled the silk off one, the LF-LC Concept, at the Detroit auto show back in 2012. I remember gazing at it, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, thinking there was no way in a year of Sundays they’d ever put it into production. Surely, this was just another dream machine designed to grab 15 seconds of fame on the 6 o’clock news. Guess what? They’ve gone and given it the thumbs-up. This time next year, the LC 500 will be in a Lexus showroom near you, stickering for around $100,000 and going head-to-head with the BMW 650i, the Porsche 911 coupe, and the Maserati GranTurismo. It’s a bold move for Lexus to throw its resources behind a flagship model that isn’t a flavor-of-the-moment, tall-riding, luxury SUV. The fact is, two-door luxury coupes are the unicorns of the automotive world, and they sell in very small quantities. Regardless, we love them, we want them, and we dream of having them in our driveways. Just gazing at this new LC will make any car lover want to grab the keys and head for the nearest serpentine back road. Beyond looks, this LC also has all the right performance credentials. 70 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

A big, thundering, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8—the same one that motivates Lexus’ hotshot RC F coupe and GS F sedan—sits under the hood. A paddle-shifter 10-speed automatic channels 467 horseys to the rear wheels. And this puppy can race from zero to 60 in less than 4.5 seconds. What’s more, Lexus hasn’t built it around some existing handme-down platform but started with a brand-new, state-of-the-art rear-wheel-drive architecture concocted from a mix of carbon fiber, aluminum, composites, and high-strength steel. Lexus boasts it’s the stiffest, most rigid chassis it has ever built. Expect the next generation of Lexus LS sedans to use a version of it. But it’s the car’s drop-dead gorgeous styling that will likely have buyers reaching for their AmEx Black Cards to snag a spot on the waiting list. Just look at the thing—it’s a work of art. Up front, it features an even bigger, more dominating version of Lexus’ new signature spindle grille featuring a 3-D mesh texture.

Love On the heels of numerous multimillion dollar gifts, Jay and Patty Baker step up once again to raise the bar in philanthropy and help transform Naples By Brian Patrick Eha | Photography by VANESSA ROGERS

Ever since founding Gulfshore Playhouse in 2004, Kristen Coury has dreamed of creating “a Tony Award-winning regional theater” in Naples but has lacked a venue to match her ambitions. The not-forprofit theater in Naples stages its plays in the Norris Community Center, a city building that also hosts many other cultural activities. When Coury recently found the perfect spot for a new theater, as part of the Naples Square downtown development, she turned for help to longtime patrons of the arts Patty and Jay Baker. As Gulfshore Playhouse season donors, the Bakers have been giving at the $100,000 level for several years, and Coury had a feeling she could count on the couple again. She just didn’t know the gift would be $10 million. As a result of this donation, which was revealed exclusively to Naples Illustrated, Gulfshore Playhouse in a few years will move into 76

a 56,000-square-foot professional theater, where it will put on a mix of new material and classics, creating original shows that its director hopes will make the jump to Broadway. The new facility will contain a 400-seat main auditorium—double the capacity of the Norris Center—and a 175-seat studio for more intimate performances and children’s theater. Plans call for rehearsal spaces, an educational wing with classrooms, an art gallery, and a café. The total cost of construction will be $40 million, but the Bakers’ gift is more than enough to get started. “Thanks to the Bakers,” says Coury, “we are going to have one of the best regional theaters in the country.” Such gifts are wholly in character for the Bakers. For the past two decades, their philanthropy has fueled major development projects and enriched the cultural fabric of Naples. Even if you don’t know them, you know their handiwork—the institutions and attractions that bear their name: The Baker Museum, Baker Theater, Baker Tower, Baker Field. “I always say we like to lay eggs where we nest, and we definitely nest here,” Patty says. Though they have called Naples home for the better part of two decades, Patty was born in the small town of Sykesville, Maryland. After high school she studied nursing, but after a year, “I flunked out—and saved hundreds of thousands of lives,” she quips. She became a flight attendant for United Airlines and later enrolled at Hunter College in 78

New York, from which she graduated summa cum laude in 1982 with a degree in art history and theater. His wife’s twin passions, Jay says, have been a theme in their lives ever since. As a self-made businessman, Jay spent several decades building his career and fortune, which have enabled him and his wife to give so generously today. He grew up in Flushing, Queens, where his mother owned a millinery store, and at age 81 he still retains the New York accent of his youth. As a boy, he helped in the store—unwittingly preparing for a career in retail. During his college years at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, his future was anything but certain. “My parents wanted me to have a profession. I’m Jewish, and they said, ‘You have to have a profession,’” he recalls. “I don’t think I was smart enough to be a doctor, and I hated blood. And I didn’t want to be a lawyer. So we all decided I’m gonna be an accountant. I took a few semesters of accounting and I did well, but I didn’t enjoy it. So I came home my sophomore year and said, ‘I’m enjoying school very much, and I thank you for everything. But I don’t want to be an accountant.’ My father says, ‘What do you want to be?’ I said, ‘I want to be a businessman.’ He said, ‘My God, you’re going to the Wharton School and you’re not going to have a profession!’ I think he thought I was finished for life.” After graduating and completing a two-year stint in the U.S. Army,

he found himself casting about for what to do next. Aptitude tests pointed him toward retail, so he enrolled in the Macy’s training program, spending the next nine years working his way up to store management, followed by executive positions at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. When his mentor, the president of Saks, became head of retail for British American Tobacco, which owned Saks and Kohl’s, among other retailers, Jay followed him into the corporate office and later met Patty in 1985. Their lives were about to change on a grand scale. Jay, along with other senior managers, purchased Kohl’s, then a lowrent department-store chain with only 39 retail outlets, from British American Tobacco. Jay became the company’s president and married Patty three years later, in 1989. By the time he retired in 2000, he had grown Kohl’s to 300 stores and $3.8 billion in annual revenue. Having retired to Naples, the couple began looking for new ways to invest their abundant time and energy. Says Jay, “People said, ‘Well, you’ll start another company.’ And I’m thinking to myself, ‘How the hell do you build another Kohl’s?’ And maybe I didn’t want to work eight days a week.” They reflected on their good fortune, the values their families had instilled in them. “Even though our parents didn’t have very much money, they would give back small sums of money, they would devote their time,” Jay says. “We said, ‘We should do something to give back.’ And that’s how it all started.” Soon after moving to Naples in the mid1990s, the Bakers made their first significant 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

donation in the community. Patty went to lunch with a woman representing The von Liebig Art Center, which provides studio space and classes for artists. “I told her that we would give $25,000, and she was very excited, and then I said, ‘. . . a year for five years,’ and she started crying.” The couple’s philanthropy increased dramatically from there. In 2007, at a gala for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Naples Philharmonic, the Bakers cornered Myra Daniels, founder of the Philharmonic Center for the Arts, and told her they wanted to give $10 million to endow the center’s fine-art museum in Pelican Bay. They had already donated $1 million to finance one of the 30,000-square-foot museum’s 15 galleries, which opened in 2000. Jay had joined the Phil’s board of directors the following year. Their newest gift enabled the museum, renamed in the Bakers’ honor, to sustain itself in perpetuity. Today the Bakers’ donation still makes up more than 50 percent of the museum’s endowment. Kathleen van Bergen, the CEO and president of Artis–Naples, says the Bakers “are essential to our continued success. They are instrumental not only in supporting the arts but in attending, in production, in seeking out visual and performing artists they enjoy.” As an example, she points to the Yves Saint Laurent and Halston exhibit on display at the Baker Museum through March 6. The pieces in the show were drawn from the permanent collection of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s museum in New York. The Bakers, who are major donors to FIT, connected van Bergen with people at the museum to have the exhibit brought to

Naples. “I think they’re a perfect example of people who have established what they stand for and what they believe in, and then support it voraciously,” adds van Bergen. In 2012, the Bakers received the Naples International Film Festival’s Voice of the Arts Award for their contributions to the local arts scene. Patty served on the Naples Players’ board for years, chairing two fundraisers that together raised more than $3.5 million. In addition, the Bakers have donated nearly $2 million to the community theater. Patty is not only an enthusiast of the arts but an active participant. An investor and producer of Broadway shows, she was excited last December to have six shows running at the same time: Hamilton, Something Rotten, and Matilda, which she invested in, as well as Beautiful, China Doll, and Fiddler on the Roof, which she helped to produce. One of the first shows she produced was the musical Memphis, for which she won a Tony in 2010. Yet the Bakers are not content to confine their philanthropic outreach to the arts. Dr. Allen Weiss, the president and CEO of Naples Community Hospital, has known the couple for years, and his institution has benefited from their generosity. A decade ago, Patty and Jay gave $5 million for the construction of a six-story tower on the hospital’s north campus. The new building added nearly 200 patient beds to the campus, an increase of nearly 400 percent. Most recently, in February, the Bakers came up big again for the hospital, pledging $15 million to renovate its downtown operating rooms and expand its palliative care service. As of now, the palliative care team treats 15 to 20 patients a day, but soon, Weiss says, they will be able to care for two to three times as many. The downtown hospital has been renamed NCH Baker Hospital. Best of all, the Bakers’ gift will go a long way toward opening a new outpatient palliative care center, relieving pressure on the Baker Tower’s in-patient service. Palliative care is not only about end-of-life treatment but also about managing chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure. “If you can measure total amount of suffering, these people with long-term debilitating diseases suffer more than those getting run over by the proverbial bus,” Weiss says. 82

I like to say we’re living our legacy, because instead of waiting until we’re dead and have no idea where the money is going, this way we get to see where it’s going and see the results. —PATTY BAKER

At home with Jay Baker, a devoted New York Yankees fan with a long-held passion for baseball.

Palliative care is unpopular, he adds, even an “orphan,” because it does not lend itself to the kinds of heroic, life-saving efforts that are the pride of Western medicine. “And to take that up as a mission? The Bakers want to help people,” he says. “They have a real passion for folks who are suffering and need relief.” In total, the Bakers have donated about $23 million to NCH over the years, making them the hospital’s largest donors. The couple has given more to NCH, in fact, than to any other organization other than Wharton, Jay’s alma mater. Their impact on health care in Southwest Florida, according to Weiss, has

been “transformational.” “It’s kind of heady when you’re driving down and you see a sign that says Baker Museum, or you see the Baker Tower at the north campus of the community hospital,” Patty says. “It’s a kind of little flicker in the heart.” But she emphasizes that putting their names on buildings is not about self-aggrandizement. Instead, she says, they are hoping to prick the consciences of other wealthy residents of Southwest Florida, inspiring them to give. According to Weiss, the tactic works. “Having the endorsement of folks like the Bakers— who are very discerning, and very smart, and very savvy—it’s just great for other people to see,” Weiss says. During the fiscal year that ended September 30, NCH raised a recordbreaking $34 million. Including the sizable new gifts to NCH and Gulfshore Playhouse, the total amount the Bakers have donated to a variety of organizations in Naples is on the order of $55 million. “One of the advantages of a place like Naples,”

Jay says, “is that it’s far easier in a smaller community to make a bigger impact.” Among a myriad of other local philanthropic endeavors, the Bakers support the Humane Society Naples, PAWS Assistance Dogs, and Collier County Honor Flight, a nonprofit that takes local veterans to visit the war memorials in Washington, D.C. Last November, the Bakers took part in one such flight. But their generosity is not limited to Naples. In recent years they have given eight-figure sums to Hunter College, whose board of trustees Patty sits on; to Mount Sinai; and to Wharton, endowing the Jay H. Baker Retailing Center. “We’ve been very blessed,” Patty says. “It feels good to give back. I like to say that we’re living our legacy, because instead of waiting until we’re dead and have no idea where the money is going, this way we get to see where it’s going and get to see the results. And it’s just amazing to see the difference it can make in a community and in individuals’ lives. I think that’s what we were born for.” « Naplesillustrated.com | MARCH 2016

Naples offers much more than just a pretty face. The Paradise Coast glows with the many gracious and accomplished residents who are the area’s heart and soul. NI celebrates five of these highly regarded Neapolitans—smart, stylish women who help make our city the fairest of them all.

New Jersey native Kathleen van Bergen has held positions in large markets including Chicago, Philadelphia, and St. Louis, and experienced concerts in more than 100 halls in two-dozen-plus countries. Yet the statuesque arts executive is as happy and at home in Naples as she has been in larger cities. She likes that the people come from many different places and backgrounds, which makes for creating a “best-of” kind of community. While she heads out of town on occasion for a bit of big city energy, van Bergen also enjoys cooking meals in her own kitchen, sharing food and laughs, occasionally playing her violin, with friends. As deeply dedicated as she is to her post at Artis—Naples, though, free time is scarce. Her dedication is paying off. In less than five years, van Bergen has led Naples’ premier cultural center to a new level. She recently announced a campaign to raise $50 million, beginning with a $15 million gift from board members Kimberly K. Querrey and her husband, Louis A. Simpson, to sustain Artis—Naples and its initiatives for generations to come.

Signature style: Black pants and a bold jacket. I wear a lot of black, but I also like a good solid color instead of a pattern. The last thing you want on someone 6 feet tall is a really large pattern. Contemporary artist I’d like to bring to Artis—Naples: Many people would love to see Adele, and I would love to see that songbird on our stage, but she’s obviously performing in much larger venues. The intimacy of our space is not ready for that yet. I would love to see Idina Menzel here—she is a real star. One thing I love about artists of her ilk is when you can combine them with the sound of the Naples Philharmonic, there is something so special about that. Recent reads: I’ve been enjoying the Piggy and Gerald series by Mo Willems, notably, I’m a Frog! (Disney-Hyperion, 2013). Although I read a great deal, there is nothing better than reading a book with my toddler nephew, Aiden—especially for the fourteenth time! Bucket-list topper: Going down under for a concert at the Sydney Opera House.

Words to live by: ‘You perform the way you practice!’ A great lesson from my violin days. It’s not only appropriate to anyone who performs, it is applicable to life.

ADRIA STARKEY

Collier County President, FineMark National Bank & Trust With a glance at Adria Starkey’s list of philanthropic and professional accomplishments, one wonders how she ever finds time for it all. Currently active on the boards of Healthcare Network, Gulfshore Playhouse, and Baker Park and serving in various capacities for numerous other groups, Starkey just completed her tenth year as a trustee for the Naples Children & Education Foundation and cohosted her tenth vintner dinner this year for the Naples Winter Wine Festival. Though she finally said no to adding any more organizations to the list, that doesn’t stop nonprofit groups from asking her for advice. While she says that makes her feel like the “little old lady with wisdom to share,” the stylish brunette certainly does not look that way. The 27-year Naples resident, whose career in finance spans three decades, has some surprises on her resume. She’s proud of some real estate development she did in Collier County years ago, which included the building on Fifth Avenue South where Bistro 821 was the first business to lease space. Plus she once had a gig for which she became a card-carrying member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a job at the Crystal River nuclear plant assisting the manager. Despite her hectic work and charity schedules, Starkey still finds time for personal pursuits, including boot camp workouts, yoga, improving her golf game, and playing the piano—a hobby she took up at age 50. Although she claims she is “horrible,” she still loves to play. Most meaningful honor: The Edison College LIFE Award received in 2008, which stands for Leadership in Fostering Education. I was just so shocked, and I do care tremendously about education and young people. It touched my soul. Can’t leave home without: If my husband, Jerry, is with me, I need nothing. Otherwise, I need my phone and a credit card. Fashion statement: Casual, relaxed, and for work, fitted and professional. Always buy quality. Books read recently: I have been reading far too many business books. And I read a number of books about Appreciative Inquiry [a model for analysis, decision-making, and creation of strategic change, particularly within companies and other organizations]. I also read Broadcasting Happiness, which was the book that led me to other books on the study of Appreciative Inquiry. Now I am looking for a good novel to just get lost in.

I am not ever thinking about retiring. I am thinking about how I can do what I like to do all the time. NAPLESillustrated.com | MARCH 2016

KIRSTEN FERRaRA Entrepreneur and Philanthropist

Kirsten Ferrara’s education, from preschool through college, was administered by the religious order School Sisters of Notre Dame. The New York native credits those formative experiences with instilling a consciousness of charitable giving that guides her life. Ferrara says she thrives on chaos, which partly explains why she was drawn early in her professional life to the hectic world of trading, serving as a junior trader of NASDAQ commodities, and later as a senior trader for overthe-counter market-listed stocks and bonds. Now officially retired in Naples, where she has lived since 2007, Ferrara is still a fireball, throwing her energy and talent into fundraising for myriad nonprofit groups, from Habitat for Humanity to Florida Cancer Specialists and the ELS for Autism Foundation. An animal lover who is often seen around town with her toy poodles Spaetzle and Goulash, Ferrara also supports the Humane Society Naples and the ASPCA. Ferrara lately has been busy as the event chair for the Old Bags Luncheon, a major fundraiser for The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. Aside from her charity engagements, the fashion-loving Ferrara owns Heart & Soul Boutique, which sells an eclectic array of home goods, clothes, shoes, and jewelry to bring “a little affordable luxury to Naples.” Favorite local places: Naples Zoo and restaurants Sea Salt and Le Lafayette. Can’t leave home without: My cordless cell-phone battery charger, tinted blue sunglasses, and the emergency money that I pretend to forget about until I need it. Personal style: During the day it’s easy, jeans and jackets; then dressy girlie dresses at night—matching shoes and purses are a must! Words to live by: Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:31) Title of my autobiography: Bring it On … A Life Of Fun And Fulfillment Guilty pleasure: Grace & Shelly’s Cupcakes at Mercato. The chocolate-covered pretzel is my favorite. Stress reliever: Getting things done. It makes me feel good to check things off my to-do list. What to bring to a desert island: A satellite phone, an ice-cold Coke, and for sure a mode of transportation back to Naples. Go-to item: My big pom-pom car key chain. I have not lost my keys in 10 years. Bucket-list toppers: To find a way to empty the shelters of animals without homes. Animals have so much love to give and so many humans are in search of love, it seems like a simple fit to me. And to travel to the Galapagos Islands.

There’s an old adage that says when you want something done right, give it to the busiest person in the room.

MARTHA FLIGG Philanthropist

It’s easy to spot Martha Fligg at the many charity events she attends, with her elegant bearing and striking platinum hair. She and her husband, Jim, a retired petrochemical industry executive, moved to Naples in 1999, and over the years have supported such philanthropic entities as the Naples Children & Education Foundation, for which they serve as trustees. Fligg also is a trustee emeritus for The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. The Community Foundation of Collier County Women’s Philanthropic Network honored her as one of its 2011 Women of Initiative for her commitment and leadership in inspiring all women seeking to make a difference through philanthropy. Fligg and her husband spent their first four years in Naples working on their dream home in Bay Colony, where they lived for 13 years. They recently sold it and are looking for a condo on the beach. The couple wants a simpler life so they can “just shut the door,” and travel to Jim’s native Australia to visit their two daughters and three grandkids, and other places they want to go. Right now, they are planning to meet their family in Hawaii in June for a vacation, since it’s halfway in between, where they will celebrate the birthdays of two grandchildren and Jim, which fall within a 10-day span. Each summer the Fliggs spend a month at a condo on the coast of South Carolina that’s been in Martha’s family for a long time, and travel extensively. Personal style: Pretty simple—no frills, lots of beige or cream colors. Woman who inspires me: My sweet mother; no matter what adversities came her way, she held her head high and just simply “handled it.” Even though she is no longer with me, I look to her for guidance and miss her every day. Secret talent: Still a secret to me! Stress reliever: Walking outside and on the beach. Go-to fashion items: I like small bags. Sometimes it might be Louis Vuitton, and Chloe now has a nice little one, but I don’t look for particular designers. I go into shops wherever we travel or wherever we are and I just look for what gets my attention. Bucket-list toppers: Africa, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; I’ve never been to either. When Jim was working I was fortunate to get to travel the world, but I have never been to Africa and I want to see the animals.

My mother used to say, ‘Martha, you have to stand up against the wall,’ when hardships arose—meaning, hold your head high and move on with a smile. NAPLESillustrated.com | MARCH 2016

INGRID AIELLI

Co-owner, Sea Salt and Barbatella

I always believed that a person’s professional life is judged on what they have done for others.

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Ingrid Aielli radiates generosity and warmth. She has a knack for making everyone who meets her feel welcome, from A-list celebrities, to underprivileged kids at the annual Christmas Eve lunch she and her husband, chef Fabrizio Aielli, host at Sea Salt, to everyone in between. The Czechoslovakian-born Aielli’s caring nature is evident in myriad charitable undertakings, including her recent participation on the committee for the American Cancer Society Bucket List Bash, and serving on the board of Angels Undercover, a charity that provides clothing to Collier County schoolchildren in need. She was named the Woman of the Year in 2001 by the nationwide Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and locally, she received the Champions for Learning’s Glass Slipper Award in 2011 for her dedication and service to the children of Collier County. Through Sea Salt, she and her husband support a long list of charities, including both the Naples Winter Wine Festival and Southwest Florida Food & Wine Fest, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Youth Haven, Champions for Learning, and Naples Botanical Garden. Ask what she prizes most, and Aielli says she treasures experiences—like meeting for drinks with friends, taking in a Broadway show, or walking on the beach with her husband. When the Aiellis have free time, they enjoy cooking with others, either at home or at their friends’ homes, although Ingrid reveals her cooking skills “are below zero. I just pretend I am chopping and helping.” Secret talent: I like to connect others, putting people together who may be able to help each other in a personal or professional matter. Current musical favorites: My 6-year-old son Adrian seems to dictate my favorites. Last year it was the Frozen sound track. This year it’s “The Eye of the Tiger.” Perfect Naples weekend: Fishing with my husband in the Gulf of Mexico, then cooking the fresh catch with friends. Guilty pleasure: Cranking up Abba until Fabrizio gets home. Of course I sing along. Fabrizio likes Pink Floyd, so you can just imagine. What a difference. Favorite restaurants: Outside of our restaurants, I frequent Food & Thought and enjoy the terrace at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort. Go-to fashion item: My Ray-Ban sunglasses. What to bring to a desert island: A sun umbrella and a great bottle of French rosé. Bucket-list topper: I would love to see my favorite opera, La Bohème, at the Sydney Opera House.

global influence

Chef Petar Al Kurdi has been meticulous in planning and operating Petar’s Restaurant, which he opened recently with his wife, Ana, on Bonita Beach Road at U.S. 41. The young chef began his culinary education at 15 in his native Bulgaria, and his resume includes stints in restaurants in the Northeast, the Cayman Islands, and The Ritz-Carlton Resorts of Naples. The fine-dining menu is small but well balanced, offering starters like butternut squash risotto, lobster bisque, and a Mediterranean salad that reflects his Bulgarian roots. Sophisticated entrées include lobster linguine with fresh herbs, house-made lasagna, and braised Wagyu beef short ribs with mushroom sauce. Says Al Kurdi, “We are careful to not spread too thin. It’s always quality first.” The restaurant has no freezer or microwave, so each dish is made with all fresh ingredients, many locally sourced. Positive buzz has kept the team hopping nightly, and with just 32 seats indoors plus some tables outside, reservations are recommended. (239-494-1343, petarsrestaurant.com) —Kat Smith

With its prime location in the heart of Fifth Avenue South, well-selected wine menu, and sleek modern-meets-comfortable decor, the restaurant now has all the ingredients to be a premier dining destination with its new chef. David Nelson, who oversaw the kitchen at Truluck’s for several years, has brought a fresh culinary outlook. His goal is to offer dishes featuring his own twist via complex sauces and unexpected garnishes that elevate the food to the level of the restaurant’s high style and ambience. A couple of standouts on the menu include scallop ceviche with perky notes of lemongrass, ginger, and lime juxtaposed with a swirl of Serrano-spiked avocado mousse, and Colorado lamb chops with chimichurri sauce and horseradish goat cheese crème fraîche. A final upgrade is new pastry chef Anthony Valerio, whose decadent sweets are well worth the calorie splurge. (239-403-7170, avenue5naples.com) —K.S.

The renovations include new paint and carpet for the entire building, as well as new booths in the Claw Bar & Tavern. The majority of the work has gone into refreshing the main space. New elements include Italian chairs, paneling in mahogany tones, and a black-and-white mangrove mural that helps blend the interior with its coastal exterior. Tierney and his team also have adjusted the lighting and have redone the ceiling with sound-absorbing fabric. “In Naples, people are conscious of sound,” Tierney says. “They want to be able to hear each other across the table, so we put a lot of the focus on that as well.” (239-591-3837, bayhousenaples.com) —A.B.

CHEF GERALD SOMBRIGHT

Sea scallops, chorizo hash, corn puree Above: Chicharrones Below: Loaded Yucca Fries with Barbacoa Beef

With roots in St. Louis barbecue followed by a 15-year culinary journey in fine dining, Gerald Sombright brings an intriguing fusion of flavor profiles and culinary techniques to his current role as chef de cuisine at Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort’s new fine-dining eatery Ario. Sombright’s career includes working with acclaimed chefs like James Beard Award winner Lou Rook III and helming the PB&G kitchen inside the Four Seasons Resort in Orlando. He expertly balances refinement—he takes 48 hours to create exquisite foie gras—with earthy prowess, such as dry-aging meat in-house to deliver a flavorful and moist Flintstone-sized grilled tomahawk steak. It’s all in keeping with a culinary approach that he calls “archaic flavors with a modern touch.” —Liza Grant Smith Gerald Sombright

Culinary style: Nostalgic edible. Every meal is evocative of a memory past, present, or future, and I’m cooking from that place of modernization of memory. “Aha” moment: Fifteen-plus years ago, I was working as a prep cook and the chef had a photo of Auguste Escoffier on the wall of the kitchen. I had no clue who it was. I asked the chef, who said, “If you don’t know, it’s your responsibility to find out.” So I went around the kitchen and someone was kind enough to tell me who Escoffier was—the father of French cuisine. There was something that clicked in my brain at that moment: These people care so much about something they do now that they also care about its history. It was really cool that people cared beyond a paycheck. Culinary trend that’s passé: Pork belly. Although I was in Miami last week and had pork belly that was cured like bacon and put on a BLT—it was really good. Inspiration for new dishes: I go to Korean BBQ at 4 a.m.; my grandmother’s kitchen; Rice Krispies treats; Vietnamese noodles … I go to all these places of bright, vibrant, meaningful, memorable flavors and use them with the flavors of the future, or things I’m really inspired by at the moment. I marry them with ingredients I’ve never used and techniques I’ve never done. Go-to ingredient: I add star anise to braises and stocks, and make it a nuance instead of the star. I love it when it feels simultaneously savory and sweet, and the balance that it creates. Ingredient he avoids: I hate truffle oil. Real white truffles don’t taste like perfume. Current food obsession: Right now, it’s probably oysters. I’m so enamored of fresh oysters that I order them in every restaurant I go to. Favorite chef: Heston Blumenthal, because of the book he wrote, In Search of Perfection (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2006). He Burrata, herb cracker, takes classic dishes and figures out ways and basil oil, baby tomato ingredients to make them perfect. Just a steak, just a roasted chicken, just a simple dessert … How do you dedicate the time and energy to do those things perfectly?

A Woman’s Touch

Cheers to five women winemakers whose stars are on the rise in a historically male-dominated industry

At the Paul Hobbs Winery, Megan Baccitich oversees the vines and wines.

By Mark Spivak

Andrea Johnson Photography

There is a theory backed up by serious scientific research that suggests women are better wine tasters than men. The research was conducted by Professor Linda Bartoshuk at the University of Florida, who discovered a percentage of the population has more taste receptors on their tongues than others, and more of those “super tasters” are women. If that is true, we can assume that women must be better winemakers as well. Despite the fact that most studies find only 10 percent of U.S. wineries currently Clockwise from have women in charge below: Pam Starr of their cellars, things raises a glass; Lynn are starting to change. Penner-Ash; Paul Hobbs barrel room; The shift is largely due Megan Baccitich to the impact of the first generation of female winemakers, who made huge contributions in the field. Barrett, dubbed “the first lady of wine” by Robert Parker; Helen Turley, superstar consultant and proprietor of Marcassin; Merry Edwards, master of Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley; and other luminaries, such as Cathy Corison, Eileen Crane, Delia Viader, and Mia Klein. The following are five women to watch in the years ahead. Pam Starr, Crocker & Starr, Napa Valley: In 1997, Starr (the former winemaker at Spottswoode Winery) teamed up with grape grower Charlie Crocker to resurrect a historic vineyard in St. Helena that dated back to the 1870s. Their small-production gems include a stunning Sauvignon Blanc, reds such as Cabernet Franc, Stone Place Cabernet Sauvignon, and a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc called Casali. She also collaborates with Drew Neiman on Bridesmaid, a line of Bordeaux-style blends. (crockerstarr.com) Megan Baccitich, Paul Hobbs and Crossbarn, Sonoma: A native of Healdsburg, Baccitich grew up literally surrounded by vines. Since 2006 she has worked closely with the legendary Paul Hobbs to produce stellar wines from some of the best sites in both Napa and Sonoma. Both at Paul Hobbs and Crossbarn, she follows the philosophy of careful vineyard management followed by natural winemaking devoid of manipulative techniques. (paulhobbswinery.com) Lynn Penner-Ash, Penner-Ash, Oregon: Penner-Ash was a trailblazer in the Northwest; after moving to Oregon with her husband, Ron, in 1988, she became the state’s first female winemaker at Rex Hill. The couple launched their own winery 10 years later. They make Viognier and

(pennerash.com) Sally Johnson, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Napa Valley: Johnson fell in love with wine during a college semester in France and eventually became winemaker at Sonoma’s St. Francis Winery & Vineyards. In 2007, she joined Pride Mountain at the historic Summit Ranch on top of Spring Mountain. Abode Gardens Under Glass Terrariums, the glass planters that were all the rage in the ’70s, have regained

their place at the trendy table in recent years, especially among creatives. A fun, time-efficient way to hone your green thumb, it’s a wonder they ever left. “Having a terrarium indoors brings life to the room, because you are bringing the outside in,” says Andrea Grace, adult education manager at Naples Botanical Garden, who hosts terrarium workshops. “It is also an art form of sorts.” Turn the page to learn how you can design your own glass-encased garden. —Liza Grant Smith

When layering your terrarium, leave about two-thirds of the glass container as open space, says Andrea Grace, adult education manager at Naples Botanical Garden (naplesgarden.org). Grace offers expert guidance on building your own miniature indoor garden.

• 1 inch gravel • Very thin layer of Sphagnum moss • 1/4 inch horticultural charcoal • 2 inches soil • Plants • Gravel or sand as top-dressing, if desired • Accent figurines

Where to display them: Indoors is best. Most of the plants that do well in terrariums require low light.

Open containers with succulents (part sun/full sun): Lightly moisten surface of soil once a week. Let it dry out completely before watering again.

Open containers with woodland plants (shade/limited filtered sun):Water once a week, misting plants occasionally. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Prune regularly to keep plants at the desired size and shape.

Closed containers with woodland plants, no succulents (shade only): Water only by the teaspoon or simply mist them, if

needed. You should hardly ever need water. If you notice a lot of condensation, leave the lid off for a few days. Prune to maintain shape, if desired. 136 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Interior design legend Mario Buatta lists Mariah Carey, Barbara Walters, Malcolm Forbes, and Billy Joel among his many high-profile clients. His propensity for using chintzes, replete with textures, patterns, and stripes, earned him the moniker “The Prince of Chintz.” Buatta, whose personality is famously as colorful as the rooms he creates, comes to Naples this month as the special guest at a members’ event for The League Club and a luncheon for members at the Naples Yacht Club. We talked with the designer, whose opulent rooms shown here are from the 7-pound, 432-page book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration (Rizzoli, 2013). —Kat Smith

NI: Explain your signature “Undecorated Look.” Buatta: You can walk into people’s houses, and it can look just like the decorating floor of a department store. It doesn’t look like anybody lives in these places. They have no personality. My “Undecorated” rooms have personality; they look like real people live in them. The furniture is real, and there are things they may have collected over the years. You don’t want to live in a house that looks like it’s been all dolled up. You want to live in a house where the rooms are comfortable, and people are enjoying them. What design trend should disappear? Gray-beige—what we’ve been living with from the ’90s. I grew up in a traditional house that was filled with art deco, art moderne. I hated it. My stylish Aunt Mary loved chinoiserie. That’s where it all started when I was a little boy. My great love has always been English country style: lots of floral chintzes, different fabrics, classical furniture, occasionally a modern piece thrown in. I like a very cozy, contemporary look.

Scott Frances

Is there a project or client you would love to work with today? Those people are all gone. There are few people today to look up to. Yesterday you had the salon ladies, like Babe Paley, Pat Buckley—all those grande dames of New York. You used to want to see how they lived, where they dined, where they traveled. You wanted to learn everything about them. Most people around us today tend to be more democratized. They all wear the same shiny yellow hair, or the same handbags. There are no more Diana Vreelands. What project are you most proud of? I’d say certainly the job I did for the White House guesthouse, the Blair House, in 1988.

Balance (App for thAT) Ever wonder if the beauty products you buy are truly as natural and organic as they claim to be? The Think Dirty app is an easy way to learn what’s in more than 350,000 products by scanning the barcode or searching by product name. It not only alerts you to potentially harmful ingredients, but also explains why they are harmful. The mobile app rates each product with its color-coded dirty meter, which ranges from clean (green) to half ’n’ half (yellow), to dirty (red). You can also search for “cleaner” alternatives after you dump the dirty ones. (thinkdirty app.com)

Landmark Hospital opens in Naples Hospital patients in town now have another option when it comes to longterm care. Landmark Hospital of Naples, the city’s first facility designed specifically for the long-term care of people with complex medical conditions, began accepting a small number of patients last fall and expects to be operating fully by later this month. The seventh and largest Landmark Hospital to be built thus far, the Naples facility features 50 private rooms, several operating rooms, a full lab, and a pharmacy. It will receive patients referred

from Collier and Lee County hospitals who need longer periods of time to recover, generally about 30 days. “What I’m excited about is the new prototype design for the acute care industry,” says Jimmy Dascani, CEO of Landmark Hospital. “By receiving patients from Collier and Lee County hospitals, we help them free up bed space while providing the patients a safe and comfortable place to recover that is tailored for improvement over the long term.” (239-539-1800, landmark hospitals.com/naples.aspx) —A.B.

Protect Your Pet The one aspect of your overall estate plan that may give you the most peace of mind By Judy Martel Every so often, a sensational headline about famous pets grabs the spotlight: hotel magnate Leona Helmsley’s $12 million trust for her dog, Trouble, for example, or fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s bequest of $82,000 for the care of his three pooches. Tales of excess aside, for many, a beloved pet is a faithful companion that owners want to ensure is properly cared for in the event of their death. Choosing the best method to accomplish this depends on how legally binding you want the arrangement to be. Once you’ve identified a potential caregiver, you have three options for drafting an agreement. Attorney Julie A. Calligaro, author of Estate Planning for Pet Owners, walks us through your choices.

1

Letter of Instruction

This is the most informal of the three documents, says Calligaro. Basically, you’re leaving the caregiver a set of instructions regarding your wishes as it relates to the care of your pet. It is not legally binding, meaning there is no recourse if the caregiver opts out and decides to give your pet away, neglects to care for it, or, worse, decides to have the pet put down. A letter of instruction is akin to a pet owner simply saying, “I trust you, and here is the information I think you’ll need to take good care of my pet,” explains Calligaro. 148 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Because there is no formal funding involved with a letter of instruction, many owners also set up a bank account that is payable on death to the caregiver. But once again, there is nothing legally stating that the caregiver must use the funds solely for the care of your pet.

keep caregivers honest knowing they’ve made a commitment.” A contract can also specify that if the pet dies, the remaining money is directed to another person or charity. But again, you’re essentially trusting the caregiver to respect the contract, says Calligaro.

2

3

Contract

One step up from a letter, a contract is prepared by an attorney and signed by the pet owner and the future caregiver. With this method, there is a little more security in that it is legally binding, at least technically. However, warns Calligaro, keep in mind there is no guarantee the contract will be enforced. “In theory, it sounds great because the caregiver should feel some pressure from it being a legally binding contract,” she says. “But from a practical standpoint, who’s going to tell? The pet can’t report wrongdoing. Who’s going to enforce it? Not likely anyone. So it’s really just something to

Pet Trust

The most formal—and binding—of the three options, a statutory pet trust is legal in most states, including Florida. You will appoint a trustee (who should not be the same person as the caregiver) to make all decisions involving the care of your pet, including how the caregiver may use any funds you have set up for your pet. “The trustee will control the purse strings,” says Calligaro. In addition, if the caregiver and trustee disagree about anything regarding the pet, the trustee will rule. And should the caregiver pass away before the pet or become too sick to continue care, the trustee has the authority to name a new caregiver. «

Agenda A strong spiritual connection to the natural world dominates the works of three featured artists at Gardner Colby Gallery this month. Viewers of the exhibit “Contemplating Nature will be enthralled by the vastly different ways in which painters Doug Foltz and David Kidd and assemblage artist Ran Adler pay homage to the boundless beauty in nature, frequently in abstract form. The exhibit begins with a reception open to the public (an RSVP is requested) March 2 and runs through March 16. (239-403-7787; gardnercolbygallery.com)

MS Gal Linda Bartok adds her dot to Debbie Heil’s car.

Spot On March is National MS Education and Awareness Month, a time to learn about the autoimmune disease that afflicts approximately 400,000 Americans. Neapolitan Dr. Debbie Heil, a retired physician who has been living with multiple sclerosis for several years, founded the Heil-Luthringer Foundation in 2007 with Lisa Luthringer to educate people with the illness, their families, care givers, and health-care providers. Recently Heil launched MS Gal, an awareness campaign and initiative to expand the foundation’s online and offline connections for those living with MS, as well as educate them, their families, and the community about the disease. As part of the initiative, Heil created the MS Gal Polka Dot Awareness Challenge to bring attention to MS through the image of polka dots on a red background. You may “spot” Heil around town in her red Mercedes—she placed large, white dots all over the car to represent each of the organization’s members who have MS.
