From the Publisher
Grateful. That’s a word that seems to be coming to my mind a lot lately. It’s the little things I am grateful for, like climbing into a warm bed at night with clean sheets, opening my refrigerator to find fresh vegetables and milk, a steady paycheck, a car in the driveway with gas in it, a driveway to call my own and a loving family. These are little things to us, but life-changing for many. So many of these everyday gifts we take for granted. I recently attended a luncheon hosted by the PACE Center for Girls. As I listened to each young lady speak of overcoming adversities I found hard to imagine, I noticed one constant with each speaker—pride. With the help and support of the center, these young ladies did not let the hand that was dealt to them set their course for life. Instead, they sought out a better direction and are now able to hold their heads high as they graduate from high school and prepare for a future that was once unimaginable. And then there’s the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction! I have never seen so many paddles raised at such a feverish pitch, and this was at an annual event that began over martinis and a girls’ night out. Who would have thought the simple concept of having an A-list celebrity autograph a plain martini glass, then have it decorated by an artist and auctioned off over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres would raise more than $500,000 in a single night? Brenda Melton, that’s who! Brava, Brenda. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit PAWS Assistance Dogs, which provides service dogs to disabled veterans, and Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization that transports U.S. military veterans to see their respective war memorials in our nation’s capital. I am grateful for the countless volunteers and charitable donations from this community that support organizations like PACE, PAWS and Honor Flight. I know I speak often about how appreciative I am for the philanthropic spirit, but I am reminded daily that this is a very special community like no other.

From the Editor It is often said the greatest wealth is your health, and how true it is. As we all dart around town trying to squeeze in all that we can during the social season, inevitably something has got to give. We may unwittingly skimp on sleep, miss a workout or eat unhealthy foods because we’re always in such a rush. In this Wellness issue, we go one-on-one with Naples neurologist and best-selling author Dr. David Perlmutter, who has been in the national spotlight for his tenets of healthy eating that he based on experience and research. What you eat can affect far more than your waistline, and turn to page 62 for what is sure to be “Food for Thought.” Beyond diet, chronic stress has long been known for having an impact on our health. Small changes can make a difference, though. Research has shown that simply being in nature—and we have plenty of lush, tranquil settings to choose from on the Paradise Coast—can tamp down our stress levels. A 2012 study in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning found that people who lived in the areas with more green space, compared to their urban counterparts, had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and reported experiencing less stress. In 2010, another study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found just stepping outside for a brief walk brightened people’s mood. Before you lace up your sneakers and head outside this spring to de-stress, let us guide you to a different side of nature through eight day-trips that will help you hone your explorer skills. Get started on page 66, when you step “Off the Beaten Path.” Whether you head out for a long hike or step outside in nature to just catch your breath and relax, remember there is indeed a reason why it’s called the Paradise Coast.

Eggs Benedict
Eggs benedict is a delicious brunch staple. As we mark National Eggs Benedict Day on April 16, Bites at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples shared its recipe for a bite-sized take on the popular dish.
recipe
Serves 4 Ingredients 8 eggs Splash of white vinegar 8 slices Canadian bacon Butter 8 slices of brioche Hollandaise sauce (recipe below) Baby heirloom tomatoes, roasted with salt, pepper and olive oil

nals that sea turtle nesting season is fast approaching. Thousands of sea turtles will converge on
In a pot, heat water and a splash of white vinegar until just below a simmer. With a slotted spoon, stir the pot to create a whirlpool. Carefully crack and drop eggs in, one at a time, allowing the swirling water to keep each egg intact. Cook for six to eight minutes, or until the white is just set and the yolk is still runny. Gently drain the poached eggs on a paper towel until they are ready to serve.

Hollandaise sauce: 2 egg yolks 2 cups clarified butter Juice of 1 lemon Tabasco, to taste Salt, to taste
Sauté Canadian bacon in butter until browned. Toast the brioche in butter. To serve, place the Canadian bacon on the plate, top with brioche toast, poached egg, and hollandaise sauce. Serve with roasted baby heirloom tomatoes. 26
In a small bowl over boiling water whisk the egg yolks and lemon juice. Whisk constantly until the mixture becomes fluffy and reaches 145 degrees Farenheit. Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in clarified butter until thickened. Season with Tabasco, salt and pepper to taste. Keep in a warm place until ready to serve. CHRIS BOTTI
Fabrizio Ferri
ON THE HORN While musician and songwriter Chris Botti’s fine features once landed him on People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People list, he’s not mere eye candy. The trumpeter’s artistry has led to collaborations with some of the most iconic music figures on the planet. Botti has worked with a who’s who of jazz and pop legends, from Sinatra to Sting, and his 2013 Grammy Awardwinning record, Impressions, pairs his playing with vocals by Andrea Bocelli, Vince Gill, Mark Knopfler and others. He’s performed in venues across the globe, from the Hollywood Bowl, to the Sydney Opera House, and coming up, Artis—Naples (artisnaples.org), where he’ll appear April 29. We talked with America’s largest-selling (four-million-plus albums) instrumental artist about his consuming passion. —Kat Smith
041-Insider Opener-0415.indd 41
NI: Does traveling for 250 to 300 shows yearly hinder writing and recording? Botti: Touring and writing are two very different mindsets, so you don’t necessarily write when you are on the road—or you don’t write anything good on the road. What is good is your performance, your “chops” are great when you play that much. So that affects your recording positively. Writing isn’t necessarily a huge passion for me like trumpet playing is; that’s what I do every day for four or five hours a day. How do you spend your scarce downtime? I lived in LA the last five years, then last July I sold all of my possessions and moved into my favorite hotel in New York. When I have days off, I love hanging out in my hotel and walking
around SoHo. I’m pretty much a one-trick pony. I am very focused on the trumpet. What effect did being on the 50 Most Beautiful People list have? Back then it gave people something to talk about on television. I think all those little pop culture things bring exposure. One of the biggest things I’ve ever done was play the national anthem at a Monday Night Football game a few months ago. I never thought it would go viral and have the impact it did. These wacky things come out of nowhere. Every day, I get up and play the trumpet, tour all over the world, but things like that come along [and make people notice]; it makes you scratch your head, in a positive way. What’s in the works? Our plan now is to do another live recording like Chris Botti in Boston, except somewhere else. It will be new material and new guests. The live Boston show was in such heavy rotation on PBS, we picked up many fans. A lot of people don’t really know what my show is. Yes, they know I play the trumpet, but they think it’s going to be a duplication of an album, and it isn’t that. When we come to Naples, we’ll have two singers and a classical violinist, and they are all on a super-high level of artistry. You look so moody on your album covers. Why so pensive? When I do a photo shoot I always end up that way, but it’s not really the way I am. I think jazz, the music, isn’t necessarily, “Hey, let’s all party.” Yet when we do our show there’s a lot of humor in it, and fun. There’s a disconnect. The record is made for listening in your house in solitude, whereas the concerts are meant for getting the audience going. « NAPLESillustrated.com | APRIL 2015

Insider Into the Woods
Beak Season
Capture a human’s-eye view of the plentiful avian treasures on the Paradise Coast with some tips from Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve naturalist guide Randy McCormick. “Seek out a place that birds frequent, such as a park, protected natural area, or depending on where you live, your own backyard,” he says. “Slow down, tune in and let yourself soak in the place for a while. Go somewhere you can give your eyes time to go from looking to seeing, and your ears from listening to hearing.” McCormick suggests visiting different environments (upland forest or coastal beaches, for example) to see a variety of birds. While it’s possible to spot rare birds, it is also rewarding to focus on common species, which McCormick prefers. His favorites include the swallow-tailed kite, roseate spoonbill, the American oystercatcher, the Florida scrub jay (a threatened species), painted bunting and the burrowing owl. Some important tips for novices: Use more than one bird field guide, because each has its unique take on what’s important. “They are like shoes ... you need to try them out and see which fit you best,” he says. Get to know the bird, not just its name. “It’s like people ... a name is meaningless if you don’t learn something about the person.” While seeking the best views and photographs, take care not to disturb the birds by using the correct equipment, such as high-powered binoculars, a spotting Bird Land Rookery Bay’s Randy McCormick scope and/or a camera lens capable of 300recommends these local spots for bird foot minimum optical zoom. The creativity of Naples-based artist Jackie Morelisse stretches far beyond paint on a canvas. She has also worked as a jewelry designer, a costume and set designer for theater productions in Southwest Florida—and now she’s adding furniture designer to her list of talents. Her latest undertaking is BouTeak by Jackie Morelisse Fine Furniture, a colorful collection made from reforestation hardwoods, designed by Morelisse and handcrafted in Finca Pangola in Costa Rica. “It allows me to express my love of color through the natural beauty of hardwood,” says Morelisse, who spent 15 years at Finca Pangola nurturing more than 700,000 reforestation tree species from which the furniture was created. The handcrafted and custom collection is available at Clive Daniel Home in Naples. (239-261-4663, bouteak byjackiemorelisse.com) —Brooke Blythe
Next Generation Gallerists
Following three years of planning and a search for the perfect location, sister duo Juliana and Kristine Meek bring a breath of fresh air to the Naples art scene with the introduction of their new gallery, Harmon-Meek | modern on 12th Avenue South. The daughters of William and Barbara Meek, owners of Harmon-Meek Gallery on Ninth Street South, the longest established art gallery in Naples, Kristine and Juliana represent the second generation and future of the gallery. “The name of the new gallery reflects our vision and what we want to showcase,” says Juliana. “We’ll feature modern and contemporary art pieces, but it’s also modern in the sense of a fun, fresh look that signals the start of a new generation of the gallery.” Featured this month will be works by Byron Browne (through April 4), and Walter Meigs, April 7 to 30. Within and beyond the fortified city of Marrakech, the revival of the riad is fueling a tourism boom to Morocco’s storybook imperial city. Selman Marrakech
A magnum opus from award-winning French designer Jacques Garcia, Selman Marrakech veers from ostentation, conveying Garcia’s vision of the marriage between an intimate, design-driven hotel and a private Moroccan home. Garcia’s signature touches like modish leather end tables are instantly recognizable; however, his profound use of a purple color palette and his role as architect in the hotel’s construction breaks new ground for Garcia. In fact, Selman’s Moorish architectural edge—thirteenth-century Marrakech meets
Andalusía hacienda—stems from Garcia’s structural vision following his first meeting with owners Saida and Abdeslam Bennani Smires. It was also during this meeting when Garcia learned of Abdeslam’s passion for Arabian thoroughbred horses, instigating an ingenious brainstorm to weave equestrian elegance into Selman’s fabric. Nowadays, dozens of these prized horses live like royalty on-site in trendy Garciadesigned stables. They freely roam the property twice daily under supervision of the stable manager, allowing guests to witness their blazing glory flush against the
backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. Their photos grace the hallways of the common areas, horse sculptures abound and several rooms overlook their manicured domains through arched windows. Another of Selman’s standout features is the 13,000-square-foot lifestyle spa, Morocco’s sole Chenot spa. Based on Dominique and Henri Chenot’s founding principles of biontology—“the study of the essence of life and its evolution,” which commingles Chinese and western medicine—the spa uses a holistic approach to health, wellness, skin and diet. It specializes in hydrotherapy, massage and beauty treatments as well as more med-spa-like cosmetic procedures and an all-out physical rejuvenation and rehabilitation program. (selman-marrakech.com)
Royal Mansour

the notion that Royal Mansour resides in a league of its own. A sumptuous collection of one- to four-bedroom riads (courtyard houses)—each with a solarium, plunge pool and vaulted sky roof—Royal Mansour is part living museum, part hotel and 100 percent apex of extravagance. Its decadent detailing and adornments are evident throughout— from carved plaster, hand-painted woods, zelliges and mosaics valued at several billion dollars to a Disney-style back lot that serves as ground zero for the legion of butlers, who appear in an instant to service any request. Beyond the enclaves of salmon-hued lowrises, a garden of orange and lemon trees leads to Mansour’s 26,000-square-foot spa. Inside, a colossal white atrium comes to life over tiers of arched, latticework frames housing two Moroccan hammams and mammoth spa suites, most with a private terrace and a plunge pool. Adjacent to the spa, Mansour’s water garden lobby is enveloped in bespoke zelliges and silver handrails. Surrounding the
lobby are style-driven common areas, such as the house library—where the ceiling opens like a book at the touch of a button. In the evening, Royal Mansour’s “wow” factor continues with the glow of thousands of custom lights and candles. It’s during this time when the hotel’s two restaurants take center stage. Both are helmed by Executive Chef Yannick Alléno, whose Paris restaurant received three Michelin stars earlier this year. At La Grande Table Marocaine, anticipate an evening of fine dining centered on authentic Moroccan cuisine; at La Grande Table Française, indulge in refined French cuisine in an ultraromantic setting where minutiae like handmade tableware exclusive to the restaurant are simply the norm. (royalmansour.com)

Among Marrakech’s colorful and clamorous markets, an unimposing entrance gives way to a serene collection of five riads, each with its own worldly motif—such as Riad Scheherazade, inspired by the African savannah, and Riad Bahia, defined by intricate white stucco work and minimalist decor. Details differ dramatically in each of the riad’s rooms, adorned with disparate furnishings, fireplaces, antiques and paintings. At every turn, La Sultana’s splendor dazzles, but guests quickly learn the term “understated” is relative in Marrakech. An amenity like Sultana’s pillared swimming pool—constructed of rare pink marble—may seem over-the-top but it is considered modest in this storied city. (lasultana marrakech.com) «

The Price of Luxury Can Kia convince upscale car buyers to drive a $66,000 K900?
By Howard Walker
Can a non-luxury brand sell luxury? Consider Kia, the South Korean automaker best known for its hip-hoppin’ hamsters, 100,000-mile warranties and cheap-as-chips econo-cars. Last year, it rocked the automotive world by having the sheer audacity to unveil a $66,000 super-luxury sedan. Before you dismiss it, know that the K900 is a breathtaking piece of rolling luxury that makes a tempting alternative to any Lexus LS 460, Jaguar XJ, Audi A8, BMW 7 Series or S-Class Benz. But just how important is value at this narrow end of the automotive market? Are luxury car buyers prepared to give up the prestige of a Mercedes three-pointed star or BMW roundel to save $10,000 to $40,000? No surprises here: They’re not. In its first six months on the market—a time when there’s typically a burst of customer clamor to be first on the block—a mere 1,050 new K900s found owners. The fact remains luxury is so much more than buttery leather, shimmery chrome and whisper-quiet V-8s. It’s about image and prestige. In the week I spent with the K900, the repeated reaction from friends and onlookers was: “Sixty grand? For a Kia?” Luxury is also about the experience. The joy of buying a Louis Vuitton bag

or an Hermès tie comes from walking into the store and soaking up the opulence and elegance. Going into a Kia store is still a little like entering Sears, with the same focus on value by the sales staff. But imagine a K900 without the Kia badge and all the baggage that goes with it. Judged on merit alone, can it really stack up against the best Germany, Japan and Britain have to offer? This is a pretty wonderful machine. For starters, it’s huge. Its 17foot length and 120-inch wheelbase are right up there with the LS 460, the BMW 750i and Audi A8. Dr. David Perlmutter’s theories on diet and dementia have placed him squarely in the national health spotlight
By SCOTT EYMAN | photography by vanessa rogers
The human brain weighs three pounds, contains a thousand miles of blood vessels and more connections than there are stars in the Milky Way. It amounts to 2.5 percent of our body weight, but consumes 22 percent of our energy … when it’s resting. The health and science of the brain is Dr. David Perlmutter’s profession, but one particular aspect of it is also his obsession: the symbiotic relationship between what we feed the brain and how it functions. After 30 years of study and poring over hundreds of scientific papers and medical studies, the Naples neurologist and author has come to believe that sugar, carbohydrates and certain kinds of wheat contribute mightily to various brain disorders such as dementia, ADHD, migraines, and even depressed libido. Perlmutter believes that dementia, if not resolutely preventable, can be rolled back, at least somewhat. “You can regain cognitive function,” he says. “Not what you had when you were 21, but to a good extent.” His book Grain Brain (Little, Brown and Company, 2013) features grabby chapter headings such as “The Fatter You Are, The Smaller Your Brain,” earned recommendations from Dr. Mehmet Oz and has been a fixture on The New York Times best-seller list. Grain Brain has been published in 27 countries and has 650,000 copies in print. His latest book, Brain Maker

(Little, Brown and Company, 2015), which focuses on how gastrointestinal issues affect the health of your brain, will be published April 28. When it comes to many neurological disorders, Perlmutter’s generalized answer is a low-carb, highfat diet, with plenty of vitamin D and exercise. He’s not referring to just a leisurely walk around the block with the dog, but as much cardio as you can take, with “huffing and puffing.” The specific villain in his dietetic cosmology is gluten. He believes high levels of fat—the good kind, not trans fats—are key to peak brain functions. Perlmutter believes that a high-fat diet can cut the chances of dementia by as much as 40 percent. Along with his insistence on proper nutrition, Perlmutter is adamant that we need to advance beyond the idea of a single pill to cure every disease, if only because that mindset presupposes a tolerance for illness in the first place. “I believe prevention is actually preferable to looking for a cure,” Perlmutter says. “The old hypothesis was that Alzheimer’s was caused by a chemical lack, so they developed a drug to allow that chemical to accumulate. The drug doesn’t work, but that’s all there is, so doctors prescribe it and feel they’ve done their duty. A one-drug treatment for disease is NAPLESillustrated.com | APRIL 2015

not going to happen with a multi-factorial disease like Alzheimer’s. The key is to prevent dementia and heart disease before they occur, and that’s what I’m trying to do.” Unlike so many residents in the state, Perlmutter is a native Floridian; he grew up in Coral Gables, the son of a neurosurgeon. His initial ambition was a career in meteorology—the National Hurricane Center was located right on the University of Miami campus—but, he says, “The physics overmatched me.” Other youthful enthusiasms included fly fishing and playing the guitar, all of which he has maintained in his roster of activities. He initially came to Naples for his medical residency because it enabled him to continue with his fishing and decided to stay. There was no epiphany, no one patient that led Perlmutter to his theories. “I’ve always been out of step in a positive way—chance favors the prepared mind, but the key word is prepared. I saw recurrent themes developing in my patients. For instance, there are factors that often show up in autism—C-sections, heavy use of antibiotics, and gastrointestinal issues, what I like to call gut bacteria reoccurrence. These influence brain chemistry and the expression of your DNA.” Deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 68 percent between 2000 and 2010—and by 2014, an estimated 5.2 million Americans were living with the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Perlmutter acknowledges
that part of the increased rate of dementia is due to the fact that people are simply living longer. “To a degree, it’s a function of an aging population, but I don’t believe it’s a natural function of the aging process. Even if you live to be 85, the odds are only 50-50 that you develop Alzheimer’s. But now we’re seeing dementia show up in 40-year-olds! Type 2 diabetes is exploding, and that’s a preview of coming attractions—type 2 diabetes doubles your risk of Alzheimer’s.” He explains that since Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis are inflammatory diseases, the brain is “basically on fire” and elevated blood sugar only makes it worse. “Food is information, sending signals to our DNA moment by moment,” Perlmutter says. “Traditionally, humans never ate highcarb diets except during harvest, in late summer or early fall, when fruit came into season, but now we have carbs 365 days a year— sugar is added to nearly all processed food.” Perlmutter is a slender, fit 60-year-old, with the customary assurance found in highfunctioning medical professionals. His diet— Grain Brain contains more than 30 pages of recipes—is not much different than the socalled paleo or caveman diet. “If something has worked for two million years, we should probably keep doing it,” Perlmutter says. The Mediterranean diet also earns his approval, containing as it does lots of olive oil, nuts,
beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and wine with meals. Perlmutter believes if you modify the Mediterranean diet by removing all gluten-containing foods and non-gluten carbs, it’s “the perfect diet.” He is quick to point out that dementia is less frequent in Mediterranean countries, partially, he believes, because the people exercise more. Perlmutter’s decisiveness extends to his personal life—he met his wife on a blind date and fell in love as soon as she opened the door. He proposed two weeks later. He and Leize have been married for 28 years, and have two children, an artist and a young doctor. The doctor has received some pushback in response to his theories, among them his assertion that, as he says in his book, “cholesterol is at most a minor player in coronary heart disease and represents an extremely poor predictor of heart-attack risk.” On the other hand, he is firmly in the medical mainstream in his belief that “smoking,

I’ve always been out of step in a positive way. Chance favors the prepared mind, but the key word is prepared. — Dr. David Perlmutter excess alcohol consumption, lack of aerobic exercise, overweight and a diet high in carbohydrates are important modifiable risk factors.” Whether it’s through praise or criticism, he’s comfortable with his status as an outlier: “I resonate to outliers.” But, he says, “if the facts on the ground change, then I will change my position. I review scientific papers in my field every evening, but I believe that the broad strokes are indelible. Will there be nuanced changes? Sure.” More than 80 percent of Perlmutter’s practice, at the Perlmutter Health Center in Naples, comes from out-of-town patients. A fairly typical one is Frank Thorn, who lives in Boston and works in securities regulation. Thorn was in his 20s and beset with lethargy as well as inexplicable skin problems. Nobody in Boston could figure out what the problem was, so Thorn’s relatives in Naples canvassed locals for a doctor who could help. After Thorn came to Naples for a consultation, Perlmutter recommended substantial changes in diet, emphasizing proper nutrition with some use of supplements. “Within weeks, I noticed I had more energy and clearer thought processes,” Thorn says. “He removed all glutens from my diet, and focused on vegetables, grass-fed beef and wild fish.” For exercise, Thorn runs and swims. All this was 10 years ago. In the interim, Thorn says, he has “referred many people to Dr. Perlmutter.” “This was always my destiny,” Perlmutter says. “My father was very classically trained— by the book. I obviously don’t do the same thing, but I feel a significant level of comfort in doing what I do. I feel comfortable thinking outside the box, but the best option of all is to make the box bigger.” «

The “big” in Big Cypress refers to its size. At 729,000 acres, it can easily overwhelm visitors. For a perfect introduction to the environment, take a drive along Loop Road, which is about 7 miles east of Highway 29 off Tamiami Trail at Monroe Station. Especially in the morning hours, you are likely to see alligators, huge softshell turtles, anhingas, egrets, herons, ospreys and hawks. If you are lucky, a river otter may also make a cameo appearance. The entire loop is 45 miles, though about halfway through, Loop Road reconnects to Tamiami Trail to bring you back to where it starts. The best time to drive Loop Road is in the dry season as the first stretch of Loop Road is unpaved. (239-695-2000, nps.gov/bicy) Best for: Sunday drivers, safari photographers, wildlife watchers Insider tip: Stop at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center before you drive Loop Road to learn about the preserve’s ecology and history. In the morning, manatees often congregate around the boardwalk outside. NAPLESillustrated.com | APRIL 2015

J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island
CHELLE KOSTER
With three campuses on Sanibel Island, the “Ding,” as locals call it, provides countless opportunities to observe wildlife by foot, bike, paddle, car and tram or boat tour. Its newest trail takes visitors into freshwater habitat via boardwalk to a two-story observation deck, ideal for spotting alligators, river otters and coastal birds. The Wildlife Education Boardwalk also helps you identify a variety of creatures with replicated tracks and scat. Scat? Yes, that’s right: biologists’ term for animal poop. Kids love to look at the realistic scat reproductions and guess what kind of animal did that. Then they open the box and find the answer plus educational tidbits on the diet and lifestyle for everything from alligators, white ibis, black snakes, bobcats and other critters that frequent the habitat. (239-472-1100, fws.gov/refuge/jn_ding_darling) Best for: Families with young detectives, curious minds Insider tip: To get to the boardwalk, follow Indigo Trail under the free Visitor & Education Center. You can walk the trail anytime, even on Fridays when Ding’s scenic Wildlife Drive is closed.

Otter Mound Preserve Trail, Marco Island What to do: Go for a hike and a history lesson Centuries ago, Calusa tribesmen walked this island, feasting on shellfish and building midden mounds from the leftover shells. Despite development over the years, Marco Island has retained two of the mounds. Otter Mound Preserve Trail, on the southeastern end of the island, circles the forested site of one such mound. It is named for the property’s more recent owner, Ernest Otter, who used the hundreds of ancient whelk shells he found on his land to shore up terraces he built around the mound starting in the 1940s, something of a landscaping wonder. Interpretive signs along the 800-foot mulch-carpeted pathway through tropical hardwood hammock tell the mound’s history and impart information about the site’s historic plants, such as native gumbo-limbo trees. Hikers can see the impressive terraces, a historic outhouse, and often wildlife, such as armadillos and indigo buntings. (239-252-2957, colliergov.net) Best for: History and botany geeks Insider tip: Visit the Marco Island Historical Museum before or after your trail walk for background on the Calusa, depicted in realistic vignettes. 68

Koreshan State Historic Site, Estero What to do: Canoe and kayak to Mound Key Archaeological State Park Paddle into the past from Koreshan’s canoe launch to Mound Key, believed to be the ceremonial center of the ancient Calusa kingdom thousands of years ago. Jesuits once established a mission there—the first of the Spanish New World, but it was short-lived because of violent Calusa clashes. The 5.5-mile paddle takes you down the lovely, oak-lined Estero River, designated a Florida Paddling Trail, to Estero Bay. The Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is known for its populations of dolphin and wading birds. A nature trail with interpretive signage explores 39-foot-high Mound Key, built from more than 2,000 years’ worth of human habitation. You can rent canoes at Koreshan or bring your own paddle craft. Nearby Estero River Outfitters rents kayaks and canoes. Koreshan’s College of Life Foundation (collegeoflifefoundation.org) offers a shorter, three-hour guided paddle including equipment, from Lovers Key State Park. Mound Key has no facilities, so come prepared. (239992-0311, dev-flparks.gotpantheon.com/park/ mound-key) Best for: Experienced paddlers, peace seekers, dolphin fans Insider tip: Plan to extend your visit to Koreshan, and tour the park’s intriguing historic settlement.

Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, Everglades What to do: Mountain bike along Janes Scenic Drive Famous for its rare wild orchids and bromeliads, Fakahatchee Strand is one the easiest and most fascinating accesses to Everglades habitat you will find. To get the most adventure out of the state park, head down the unpaved Jane’s Scenic Drive with mountain or hybrid bikes. The 11-mile (one-way) road penetrates thick, subtropical forest atop the strand that rises above swamp waters. You could drive the roadway, but biking allows you to spot the rare orchids and other native flora and fauna, including cypress trees and a stand of native royal palms. Birds flock to the protected wetland, particularly at a feeding pond about 10 miles in. Other denizens of the wet, shadowy world include Florida panthers, black bears, mangrove fox squirrels, Everglades minks, alligators, white-tailed deer and various snakes. (239-6954593, floridastateparks.org/park-history/fakahatcheestrand) Best for: Strong cyclists, serious wildlife watchers Insider tip: Three hiking trails—actually, old cypress logging tramways—traverse the strand off Janes Scenic Drive. Park your bikes at the trail gates and walk their 1to 2-mile lengths. NAPLESillustrated.com | APRIL 2015

The Dolphin Explorer, Marco Island What to do: Join in an up-close-and-personal research study of dolphin There’s nothing like a dolphin sighting to turn a boat excursion magical. With the Dolphin Explorer, passengers are more than mere observers, they become part of a research study that began in 2006. The Ten Thousand Islands Dolphin Project is the only survey to track wild bottlenose dolphins in Southwest Florida. Dolphin researchers lead daily trips to find and photo-record the local dolphin population. Passengers enjoy unique opportunities to help spot, photograph, observe behaviors and sometimes even name newly sighted dolphins. The survey team has catalogued nearly 200 dolphins to date, named by passengers from around the world. The excursion departs from Rose Marco River Marina on Marco Island and cruises the waters of Ten Thousand Islands and Rookery Bay, stopping at uninhabited barrier islands for shelling. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. (239-642-6899, dolphin-explorer.com) Best for: Fans of the Dolphin Tale movies, kids of all ages Insider tip: Shaded areas and bathroom facilities onboard accommodate families, who also get a complimentary souvenir photo.
Big Shark Fishing Charters, Goodland What to do: Catch and release sharks Bull sharks, lemon sharks, hammerheads, blacktips, spinner sharks and Atlantic sharpnose sharks: Capt. Chris DeWitt can put you on these fierce fighters in the backwaters of Ten Thousand Islands—without having to depend on weather conditions to head to deep waters for them. He is one of a select group of local captains permitted to charter in Everglades National Park waters. DeWitt can arrange a private half- or three-quarters-day adventure. He puts multiple lines in the water with various kinds of bait to maximize his clients’ opportunities to reel in thrashing sharks up to 7 feet long for immediate release. He also will search out tarpon, snook and other prized catches, but says shark fishing constitutes 60 to 70 percent of his business. “People just love the thrill of it, pulling something up to the boat that could eat them,” said the charter guide of 15 years. “They like to take a lot of nice pictures.” (239-2534248, bigsharkfishing.com) Best for: Extreme anglers, Shark Week fans Insider tip: Big Shark Fishing customizes adventures to the wants of the group and does not combine charter groups in a boat.

future In just five years, your choice of a new luxury car could be between one you drive or, more likely, one that drives itself By Howard Walker
I
t was a George Jetson vision of the car of tomorrow: a stylized illustration from the pages of Popular Science, circa. 1957. It showed a sleek, glass-canopied sedan with more fins than a Discovery Channel special on great whites, gliding along a wide highway. Inside, Dad played dominoes around a square-topped table. Mom 72 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED in her cardigan sat alongside, while two well-behaved kids sat smiling in the back. It took only a moment to realize this scene of rolling domestic bliss was possible because the car was performing the seemingly impossible: driving itself. Back in the fifties, that was the stuff of dreams—to get into your car, tap a button and zoom down the highway, the car piloting itself, allowing you the luxury of reading, knitting, catching up on correspondence or playing dominoes with your brood. Fast forward to November 2014. A battleship-gray Audi A7 sedan cruises the Las Vegas strip and eases up to the gate of the massive Consumer Electronics Show after covering more than 550 freeway miles from Silicon Valley. There’s nothing special about that—until you learn that it made the trip without a single person taking control of the steering wheel.
Back in the fifties, autonomous cars could only be visualized through dreamy illustrations (left). Today, driverless cars are fast becoming a reality, such as this Audi A7 sedan showcased at CES last November. 72

Brave New World: One obvious benefit of driverless cars is not having to actually drive. What to do with all that free time? The XchangeE all-electric sedan by Swiss concept carmaker Rinspeed, based on a Tesla Model S, offers no fewer than 20 seating options. The “movie theater” option (above) allows passengers to face rearwards in reclining jet-like seats to watch Hollywood’s latest on a 32-inch ultra-high-def screen with full surround-sound Harmann stereo. There are computer screens and keyboards, as well as a built-in Amici espresso maker when you hold that four-party business meeting at 75 mph on I-75.
Audi A7 has a variety of sensors to allow the car to drive itself
Make no mistake: The dream of the driverless car is fast becoming a reality. And it may be sooner than you think. At November’s CES show, Ford CEO Mark Fields said he expected fully autonomous cars to be on the streets by 2020. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn plans to have a self-driving Nissan in the showroom by that year. Audi says its next-generation A8, due in 2017, will be capable of driving itself with full autonomy. Google, which has already logged more than 700,000 miles with its fleet of self-driving Priuses, also predicts to have selfpiloting cars by the end of the decade. It even unveiled a funky robo-car prototype in December. 74

You can already stroll into a MercedesBenz showroom and drive away in a car capable of driving you down the freeway with your hands off the wheel. But for the time being, Mercedes’ litigation-phobic lawyers won’t allow you to do it for more than 10 seconds. Take the latest S-Class range. Engage its Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, set the speed you want and it will obediently follow the vehicle in front, braking when it slows— even coming to a full stop—and accelerating when it moves off. It will perform its duties at speeds as fast as 120 mph and through curves. Couple that with the Active Lane Keeping Assist system, and the car will stay perfectly Mercedes Benz S 500 centered in its lane. Equally impressive is its Stop and Go Pilot feature, which taps into the car’s 12 ultrasonic sensors, several radars and halfdozen cameras. This lets you drive hands-free for as long as you want at speeds as fast as 6 mph, taking the pain and suffering out of bumper-to-bumper, stop-start traffic. And when you get to where you’re going, the car’s Active Parking Assist will find a space that’s big enough and magically ease itself in, taking full control of the steering and brakes.
Other automakers are not far behind. Cadillac recently announced it will introduce its so-called Super Cruise system within the next two years with follow-the-leader features similar to Mercedes’ Distronic Plus. At Volvo, the all-new XC90 SUV, arriving this summer, will have the ability to detect and avoid collisions with not only other vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists. It will also be able to park itself in perpendicular spots. How cool is that? And—a first

for Volvo—the car will brake when making a left turn if it senses an oncoming car. All this takes Volvo one step closer to fulfilling its pledge to eliminate crash-related deaths in cars by 2020. BMW, too, is at the forefront of semi-autonomous technology. At the CES show, it demonstrated its upcoming Remote Valet Parking Assistant on one of its i3 electric cars. Pull up to the front of, say, a shopping mall, activate the system using a smart-watch app, jump out and the car will trundle off into the parking structure, find a space and park itself. When you are finished with your retail therapy, tap your smartwatch screen and the BMW will miraculously reappear where it dropped you off. But all this is just small-fry when you take out the crystal ball and look at the real future of autonomous cars. It’s a world where vehicles don’t crash, speed, run red lights, drive drunk or fall asleep at the wheel. You wouldn’t need parking spaces, because the autonomous car will pick you up, drop you off and retreat to some subterranean holding pound. As for the morning school run, trips to soccer practice or drives to the gym, summon an autonomous car and, just like a chauffeur service, it will pick you up, drop you off and be there when you’re finished. The implications for improving the quality of life for the elderly, those with disabilities and those without a driver’s license are simply huge. Teen driving? History. All this technology can’t come soon enough. According to the report “Self-driving Cars: The Next Revolution” by the consulting firm KPMG, there were six million crashes in the United States in 2010, resulting in nearly 33,000 traffic deaths. Ninety-three percent of those were caused by human error. And those crashes send 2.3 million people to the hospital at a cost of almost $300 billion every year. According to the report, traffic collisions in the United States are the leading cause of death for those between the ages of 4 and 34.
But it’s not just the loss of life that will be affected by driverless cars. KPMG estimates the average commuter spends 250 hours a year behind the wheel, resulting in time lost for more gainful activities. Let’s not forget the stress-escalating game of “Find a Parking Spot.” According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s MIT Media Lab, 40 percent of the gas usage in congested urban areas is through the simple quest of finding an empty spot. “Autonomous cars are no longer the realm of science fiction,” Adam Jonas, the leader of Morgan Stanley’s global auto research team, says in a statement. “They are real and will be on the roads sooner than you think.” Exactly when? Jonas predicts by 2026, all the issues of liability, infrastructure and consumer acceptance will be overcome. By 2046, he sees a true automotive utopian society with 100 percent autonomous vehicles on the road.
the implications for improvinG the quALITY OF LIFE FOR THE ELDERLY, THOSE WITH DISABILITIES AND THOSE WITHOUT A DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE SIMPLY HUGE. Balancing those predictions, Colorado-based Navigant Research believes by 2035, global sales of autonomous vehicles will reach more than 95 million annually, representing 75 percent of vehicle sales. ABI Research, another firm, believes by 2032, half of all new cars sold will be autonomous. For now, those pesky liability issues are causing automakers to scratch their heads. If the radar on a self-driving car doesn’t detect a child chasing a ball into the street, who’s to blame: the driver, who’s checking his Facebook page, or the manufacturer? This is why, for the foreseeable future, drivers of autonomous cars won’t be able to take a nap, read a newspaper or use a laptop. They will have to be alert and awake to take back control at any time. There’s also the little matter of government legislation. Right
BMW’s latest technology is a Remote Valet Parking Assistant for its electric cars, activated by using a smart-watch app.

Luxury in Motion
Mercedes-Benz has a vision of the self-driving car of the future. And it’s all about luxury.
The F 015 Luxury in Motion self-driving concept car by Mercedes-Benz is described as a private retreating space.
now, only California, Nevada, Michigan, Washington, D.C., and, yes, Florida allow the testing of self-driving cars on the road. Speedy legislative changes will be needed if robo-cars are to be in production by 2020. But sit back for a second and take in the sheer enormity of what is happening to the way we’ll drive. Cars that can drive themselves are just around the corner. In a release, Dr. Thomas Weber, Mercedes-Benz’s head of research and development, sums it up best: “Autonomous driving is one of the greatest innovations since the invention of the motorcar.” To which George Jetson would undoubtedly reply: “Hoobadooba-dooba!” «
072-feat CARS-0415-2.indd 77
It could be an extra from a sci-fi blockbuster. Harrison Ford behind the wheel in Blade Runner. Tom Cruise reclining in the back seat in Minority Report. What you’re looking at is the F 015 Luxury in Motion, Mercedes-Benz’s vision of the self-driving super-luxury car of the future. Strange name, exciting concept. Unveiled at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, it was built to showcase how the car is growing beyond its role as mere transportation and into what Mercedes describes as a “private retreating space.” Here, four occupants can relax in huge, almost retro-looking white leather armchairs that swivel to allow face-to-face interaction—just as in that pen and ink illustration from 1957. A game of dominoes, anyone? Six ultra-wide display screens wrap around the car’s interior for the ultimate in Cinemascope movie watching, Facebook updating, video conferencing or Google searching. And if you don’t like the view outside, at the tap of a screen the car’s windows project different vistas. Outside could be Athens, Georgia; inside Athens, Greece. The interior space is huge. The car’s wheelbase stretches over 12 feet, which is almost two feet more than in the latest SClass. Getting in and out is easy thanks to saloon-style doors that swing out a full 90 degrees. Powering this ovoid-bodied limo would be a plug-in hybrid fuel-cell system designed to provide a 700-mile range on electric power alone with zero emissions. “Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society,” Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, says in a statement. “The car is growing beyond its role as mere transportation and will ultimately become a mobile living space.” —H.W.

Veggie Stars
Move over, bacon. Out of the way, kale. Brussels sprouts are here to stay as one of the trendiest foods featured on menus. The 2015 Zagat Dining Trends Survey of 10,000 American diners shows kale and bacon, the oncetrendy foods that were “in” last year, are not feeling the love from diners in 2015. But 45 percent of people said they still love Brussels sprouts. Sure, mom would be proud, but aren’t Brussels sprouts just another vegetable? Apparently not, considering their widening popularity. USS Nemo (ussnemorestaurant.com) is one of many Naples restaurants offering a Brussels sprouts dish on its menu. Chef-owner Nicolas Mercier’s spin on the dish is serving the sprouts fried with shrimp, sweet soy, orange and almonds. How’s that for a trendy (and delicious!) way to eat your veggies? —Brooke Blythe

confidential Chef Giuliano Matarese “I was born to be a chef,” says Giuliano Matarese. “From the time I was two or three years old, I wanted to cook and I wanted to come to America.” He made that journey at the age of 21, moving from his native Naples, Italy, to New York City, where he worked under Charlie Palmer at Manhattan’s famed Aureole, among other restaurants and chefs. In 2010 he enhanced his public profile with an appearance on the Food Network’s popular show Chopped, competing against other chefs to make dishes from a mystery basket of ingredients within a strict time frame. The following year he took the reins as executive chef at Sale e Pepe, which serves Southern Italian cuisine at the Marco Island Beach Resort. And as Chef Matarese shares in this interview, the smells of his grandmother’s kitchen linger with him. —Mark Spivak
Bruschetta Rustica, grilled country bread with salame Felino, sunnyside up quail egg and vincotto
Pan-seared Pacific halibut fillet with Mediterranean chowder variation, watercress and preserved lemon puree
First meal he prepared: I was 11, and my mother had a doctor’s appointment in the evening. We were four boys at home and we were getting hungry, so I cooked for the family as a surprise. I prepared pasta pizzaiola in the Naples style, in a spicy tomato sauce with veal cheeks, and had the table set when my parents came home. In his home fridge: I use a lot of imported items, and shop every day as I would in Italy. You’d typically find bacalao from Norway, dry-aged sheep’s milk cheese, and a spicy fish spread from Calabria. For a romantic evening: I’d make a pasta dish with fresh langoustines, zucchini and pecorino cheese—light but enticing.
Patience is a virtue: Training is the most important part of my job; it’s a big responsibility to groom the chefs of the future. I don’t mind repeating something a thousand times if I have to. A chef’s critical ingredient: Passion. If they have it, you can see it in their eyes. And if they do, they deserve as much time and effort from me as I received 18 years ago. What he learned from Chopped: I’m a detail-oriented perfectionist, so the time limit was a problem for me. But it was a great opportunity to display my skills and receive clear, honest feedback from the judges. Your flaws are exposed and it can be a painful experience, but I like challenges. The art of food: A chef is like a painter mixing paint on a palette: the perfect tomato, or just a tablespoon of the right olive oil, can change a dish completely. He would most like to cook for: My grandmother. I didn’t see her again after I left Italy, and I hope she would be impressed with me. After that, I’d like to create a meal for someone who never had the chance to have a great culinary experience in a restaurant. I’d love to open their eyes.

Chef James LeFebvre, Dr. Manuel Peña
Cravers of crawfish can get their share of the mini-lobster-like crustaceans at the Fifth Annual Crawfish Boil benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County April 11. The New Orleans-style party is sponsored by its founder, Dr. Manuel Peña, a Naples plastic surgeon who had hosted his own crawfish boils years ago. “I began having them at my house and raising money for my mission trips to Latin America and Africa with organizations such as Operation Rainbow and Operation Smile,” says Peña. “We had a lot of fun and success, but it grew too big for a backyard.” In 2005, when he joined the BGCCC board, he noticed the nonprofit’s main fundraisers were out of reach financially for many would-be donors, and came up with the idea for the BGCCC Crawfish Boil. While it was free to the public the first four years, this time there is a $25 entry fee that will go to support the club, which is expanding with a new facility in Immokalee. The shindig brings a truly authentic taste of the Big Easy to the Boys & Girls Club campus. “Our chef is Jim LeFebvre, a Cajun friend of mine from Baton Rouge. He has been cooking crawfish for about 40 years,” Peña says. The family-friendly day includes live music, kids’ activities, a cigar tent for grown-ups, a photo booth and crawfish races. L’Chaim!
Toast the holidays with a kosher wine fine enough to impress any connoisseur By Mark SPivak
Whether or not you’re Jewish, it’s hard to claim that early exposure to Manischewitz and Mogen David inspired your love of wine. Unfortunately, these brands constitute the only experience of kosher wine that many consumers have. The sweetness of the Concord grapes (and the addition of high-fructose corn syrup, in the case of Manischewitz) is generally sufficient to nip a wine-drinking hobby in the bud. Equally unfortunate is the fact that high-quality kosher wines are now made all over the world, and many consumers are unaware of their existence. What makes wine kosher? For starters, the wine must contain only kosher ingredients, including yeasts and fining agents. It must be handled during winemaking only by Sabbath-observing Jews, and the process is supervised and certified by a rabbi. There is an additional category of mevushal wine:
mevushal literally means “boiled,” although today the product is more likely to be flashpasteurized to preserve the aromatics. Once treated this way, it may be handled and poured by non-Jews and still remain kosher. As we approach Passover, connoisseurs searching for kosher wines have a number of choices. The two most widely distributed brands are Yarden, made by Israel’s Golan Heights Winery, and Baron Herzog, which bottles a collection from many different California appellations. Both wineries produce at least two dozen offerings in an assortment of grape varieties, styles and prices. Wine lovers who are interested in exploring upscale, boutique kosher wines should consider the following options. Many are sold locally; the entire product line may not be available, but additional labels can be readily found online.
Bazelet HaGolan: The motto of this small-production Golan Heights operation is “the secret is in the soil”—specifically, the volcanic basalt soil for which the winery is named. Prices for the Reserve Merlot and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon hover in the $50 range, an excellent value for a carefully crafted, vineyarddesignated wine aged for nearly two years in barrel.
Domaine du Castel: This small, family-run operation in the Judean Hills was the first Israeli winery to receive 90 points from Robert Parker. The wine to buy is the Castel Grand Vin ($70), a Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. 112 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
112-POUR-0415.indd 112
2/27/15 11:56 AM
Dalton Winery:
Ella Valley Vineyards:
Founded in 1995 in Galilee by the Haruni family, who moved to Israel from England, Dalton’s most popular wines are its two Canaan blends retailing for less than $20. The red combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Sirah with dollops of Syrah and Mourvedre; the white is an off-dry mélange of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Muscat.
Napa-trained Danny Valero traveled across Israel in search of the perfect vineyard site before landing in the Valley of Ella. The wines are full-bodied and concentrated, made from low yields; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah sell between $15 and $30.
Yatir:
Flam Winery:
Despite being owned by Carmel, Israel’s largest winery, Yatir’s production hovers around 15,000 cases, tiny by today’s standards. It is best known for its flagship wine, Yatir Forest ($85), a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
This is another family affair: Veteran winemakers Israel and Kami Flam launched their own business in 1998 with their children Golan, Gilad and Gefen. Their Reserve Syrah ($48) and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($60) have garnered high praise from critics. «

Berry
Healthy This month marks the start of blueberry season, and we now have yet another reason to stock up on this delicious superfood. Of course, we all know the tiny berries are bursting with huge health benefits, including antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. Now, the latest research shows they may also help keep blood pressure in check. A small study, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, focused on 48 post-menopausal women with borderline hypertension. Half the participants consumed a tablespoon and a half of freeze-dried blueberry powder (equal to a cup of blueberries), and after two months they experienced a 5 to 6 percent drop in blood pressure compared to the women who ate powder with no blueberries. Researchers also found the blueberry powder spiked blood nitric oxide levels by around 68 percent. Nitric oxide, which helps widen the blood vessel walls, may be at least partly responsible for the lower blood-pressure levels, researchers say. —Teri Evans

Spring is a time of renewal, and when it comes to your beauty regimen, that means taking a fresh look at your skin. Exfoliation is an important part of the process—and not just for your face. Body scrubs slough off dull, dead skin cells to encourage new growth and help polish the skin from the neck down. There are countless types of scrubs, but most are based in either sea salt or sugar. Sugarbased treatments tend to be a milder exfoliant, suggested especially for sensitive skin, because the sugar granules are smaller and rounder than the jagged salt particles. Sea salt scrubs, though, are known to help draw toxins from the body and soothe sore muscles. Whether you’re leaning towards salty or sweet, consider this sampling of local treatments to help get your glow back this season. SALTY Tropical Marine Body Polish at The Spa in The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club (naplesbeachhotel.com) includes a gentle massage and combines sea salts and marine algae for the exfoliation, followed by a rich cream to hydrate the skin. (50 minutes, $130)
GLOW
Exotic Mediterranean Wrap at SpaTerre in LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort (laplaya resort.com) is a sea salt scrub that includes argan shells and beeswax, followed by a body wrap of aloe vera and mint. It includes a scalp or foot massage. (50 minutes, $140) SWEET Anti-Aging Guava Nourishing Wrap at The Spa at Marco Island Marriott (239-6422686) starts with a scrub made of raw cane sugar, followed by a body masque of warm shea butter and a botanical blend that includes guava, rich in vitamin C. (50 minutes, $160) Chocolate Raspberry Brown Sugar Scrub at the Spa on Fifth in the Inn on Fifth (innonfifth.com/spa-on-fifth) is a delicious treatment gently removed with warm towels and includes rich hydration, as well as a head and foot massage. (60 minutes, $125) —Teri Evans
Mind, Body, Soul … and Massage Feeling utterly drained as we wind down (at least a little!) from the height of season? The Ritz-Carlton, Naples (ritzcarlton.com/naples) is taking massage to another level for those in search of that coveted mind-body-soul connection. A recent addition to the spa menu is a Chakra Balancing massage that uses gentle, sweeping strokes to focus on the seven energy centers in the body. The chakra system has been around for centuries in ancient healing practices. The energy centers start at the crown chakra at the top of the head all the way to the root chakra at the base of the spine. The massage includes seven unique essential oil blends for each of the energy centers, like rose and geranium for the heart chakra, and healing affirmations to melt away tension, while ushering in pure relaxation. Even intense type A personalities are sure to lose all sense of time while indulging in this hug for the soul. —T.E.

Spring is fast approaching, which isn’t necessarily a good thing if you’re an allergy sufferer. For those looking for an alternative to antihistamines, consider these natural remedies. Keep in mind: While some research supports their beneficial roles, more study is needed—and, as always, check with your doctor before taking herbal remedies or supplements.
8 Facts About Your Foot & Ankle Regenerative medicine for joint pain available. PLatelet Rich Plasma inj. for achilles / heel pain / wound care to avoid surgery.
Herbs: A literature review funded by the National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health found the shrub butterbur is effective in curing allergy symptoms like itchy eyes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a preliminary study suggests stinging nettle could also help reduce sneezing and itching related to hay fever.
*without proper care could lead to surgery *we have exclusive Shockwave therapy for the pros, now open for everyone
Nutrients: Test-tube experiments have discovered quercetin—a flavonoid that gives fruits and vegetables like apples and parsley their color— stops the release of histamines and may prevent symptoms like a runny nose, watery eyes and facial swelling, according to the University of Miami Medical Center. Citrus is an excellent source of quercetin, the center says, which is good news for allergy sufferers: “Vitamin C supports the immune system, which can be helpful to overcome allergies,” says Anna Maria Clement, a naturopathic medical doctor, licensed nutritionist and co-director of the Hippocrates Health Institute, a natural healing center in West Palm Beach. Crusty, yellow nails are a sign of infection.
Diet: Consider adding yogurt to your diet: Numerous studies, including 2008 findings from the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, have reported signs of clinical improvement among allergy sufferers who consumed probiotics. The effects of the healthy bacteria have been particularly examined among children who are allergic to pollen; for instance, a popular 2007 study from the University of Milan’s pediatrics department reported reduced symptoms among preschoolers who consumed fermented milk for one year. “Usually, environmental allergies are increased because of the lifestyle a person has,” Clement says. “Exercising too little, having a bad diet or ingesting too much sugar can all increase and aggravate allergic responses. We recommend changing your lifestyle to improve your allergies, eat a diet of raw living organic foods, get plenty of exercise and enjoying a sauna, as they help to detox the body.” —Liza Grant Smith

Balance More Barres If you can hold onto a ballet barre, you can do the workout at Pure Barre. Its low-impact, isometric approach to exercise has grown in popularity in recent years because of its accessibility to people of all ages and fitness levels. The second Southwest Florida location of the franchise (the first is in Naples on Pine Ridge Road) opened its doors recently in Estero. The classes do not require dance experience, and instructors are happy to answer questions about the moves after class. Just be sure to bring a pair of sticky socks to prevent slipping. Flex Time
As the baby-boom generation ages, yoga offers an effective way for seniors to gain core strength and flexibility, which is key to preventing falls, according to a recent study by the University of Miami published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “People who are at risk of falling often hold back from challenging themselves physically,” says Kiersten Mooney, owner of Bala Vinyasa Yoga in Naples (239-598-1938, bvyoga.com). “That’s why we need to encourage them to build strength, and doing yoga is a great way to start.” Mooney’s studio offers Gentle Yoga and Therapeutic Yoga classes specifically designed for seniors and others with limited range of motion. The classes feature a sequence of movements and poses, including balance work, to increase reaction time and help get seniors used to moving up and down. “I love preventing unnecessary injuries and helping people stay vibrant and active, and the best way to do so is through movement,” Mooney says. —Anna Bjorlin

Artist Julia Kostsova, a young and gifted painter, has been fascinated by color and shape since childhood. The Siberian-born Kostsova, a graduate of the famous Repin's Art Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, is known among public and private collectors around the world for capturing movement and moments in their immediacy on the canvas. Her impressionistic style will be on display in the exhibit “Neapolitan Moods”—a series of new oil paintings capturing such local scenes as the beach at Lovers Key and the night lights on Fifth Avenue South—April 1 through 22 at Gallery on Fifth/Russian American Museum of Art in Mercato. Giving BACK
Paving Pathways to Education is what brought Naples residents Don Fites and Joyce Hagen together. Married nearly two years now, the couple first met at a board meeting for Valparaiso University, where they are both alumni. Their passion for education also has guided their philanthropic involvement with The Immokalee Foundation. When Fites visited the nonprofit’s Immokalee Technical Center, he saw an opportunity to help train young people to work with heavy equipment, a skill that leads to lucrative jobs that are in demand. “There’s a place in the world for a lot of people who do not end up going to college,” says Fites, a former CEO of machinery giant Caterpillar. “I thought, what are we going to do to help those people?” Answering his own question, Fites conceptualized and helped launch The Immokalee Foundation’s Heavy Equipment Technicians Program in 2010. He also contributed funds through his Fites Family Charitable Trust, and worked to secure collaboration with the Caterpillar Foundation, Kelly Tractor (a Caterpillar dealer) and the District School Board of Collier County. The two-year program has yielded about 25 graduates to date, all now employed in the industry. It is just one of several ways the nonprofit assists underprivileged children of Immokalee with education, vocation and life skills. “When you drive from Naples, 40 miles east to Immokalee it is like driving into a third world country,” Fites says. “It strikes you to see the wealth and beauty of Naples [contrasted against] the absolute poverty that many people in Immokalee live in. They are proud people. They want to succeed, and it makes you feel good to try to help them.” At the 2014 Charity Classic Celebration, Fites contributed $200,000 in a matching fund to incentivize other donors at the nonprofit’s annual fundraiser. This year, Hagen will chair the November event. “It’s about looking at the individual needs of the kids and being there with resources along the way,” says Hagen, also an Immokalee Foundation board member. “The dream is that they are contributing members to society, they’re able to realize their dreams, and if they want to get out of Immokalee and start a life somewhere else, they will have all the tools to do that.” «
