DRAWING POWER ne recent morning while driving around town—and wondering why more Floridians don’t own convertibles—I thought about how much our state has changed in the last 20 years. That’s my point of reference, because I made Florida my home around that time and soon after bought the company that publishes this magazine. People typically choose to live here for two reasons—business or pleasure, and often both. For me, after enough Michigan winters, Florida offered temperate weather and unforgettable geography. But the timing was fortunate. As one of the country’s fastest-growing states with a booming affluent population, Florida presented good business opportunities to anyone who could meet an increasing demand for products and services (including magazines) necessary for living the good life. Even at highway speed, it was apparent many others had reached similar conclusions during the past two decades. The view from the driver’s seat told the story. New beachfront condominiums, gated luxury communities, modern office buildings and upscale shopping destinations, all built to serve so many people sold on the Sunshine State in some way—some 8.8 million new Floridians since 1990. The skyline proves how we’ve grown up. I don’t pay much attention to those who say we’ve grown out. The attractive combination of opportunity and oasis hasn’t changed, not even in recent years. It’s almost impossible to imagine things any other way. Indeed, after a small step backward in 2008, Florida’s population rose last year—just as it has for 49 of the last 50 years. In fact, one Washington research firm thinks Collier County’s population will increase by as much as 9 percent by 2012. And those newcomers should find an expanding economy and job growth under way, according to a forecast from the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Economic Competitiveness. Sure, there will be challenges in the years ahead, as there always are. Twenty years ago, our country was working its way through similarly uncertain times, and while we didn’t know it at the time, Florida soon would experience unprecedented growth. Ever an optimist, I hope our current circumstances will have a familiarly pleasant outcome as the result of deliberate, examined thinking. I am certain, however, about what author Zora Neale Hurston wrote long ago: “Florida is a place that draws people.” As we enjoy the last few days of spring, it might be worthwhile to find a convertible, put the top down, go for a drive and remember why this is so.

hether your idea of liquid luxury is the dragonberry mojito at M Waterfront Grille or an early morning kayak trip on the back bays, Southwest Florida offers a variety of sparkling opportunities to enjoy the area’s abundant liquid luxuries. In the rush to attend prolific seasonal events, we may forget to stop and appreciate the watery world around us. Sometimes we don’t really see the glitter as spectacular as diamonds at every turn until we entertain guests who inspire us to focus on our paradise through fresh eyes. The idea of seeing again what we may take for granted inspired this issue. For example, some may look at the Gulf of Mexico and see calm and gentle waves. For others, the Gulf is a place to challenge nature through surfing, where the gentle Gulf sometimes churns enough to inspire an enduring desire to seek waves the world over. Join some surfers who learned in Naples and now annually ride the waves in Costa Rica (page 56). Kevin Sweeney sees the world’s waterways from the bottom up. A diving instructor and photographer, his images give us an intimate look at the underwater artistry and vivid colors of the oceans (page 50). Some people look at sea creatures and shells and see creatures and shells, but artists see unprecedented beauty worth enhancing or imitating. The sea inspires fine jewelry creations (page 22), artistic furniture and decorating whimsy through the art of coquillage (page 18) and shades of azure for all reasons (page 20). During the hectic months, Naples can be about “see and be seen.” During the summer in Naples, it can be all about the sea and reconnecting with the natural beauty that drew us all here.

MOTHER OF PEARL Judith Auclair knows necessity is the mother of invention. When an interior design client needed a uniquely Floridian focal point, Auclair used shells to embellish a piece of furniture, creating a knockout work of art. That accidental entry into the world of coquillage fits well with her knowledge of European antiques 3

and the popularity of shellwork during the eighteenth century. Through the years, demand for her fantastically embellished chandeliers, lamps and furniture has grown so much she closed her antiques store on Fifth Avenue South to spend more time on her art, which

CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Fans of daytime drama will flock to Marco Island to mingle with popular actors at the annual SoapFest Charity Weekend May 1516. More than 20 soap stars will help raise money for local children’s charities, including Eden Florida’s Eimerman Center. A new event this year features a play reading followed by a cocktail reception. Other events include Art 4 Autism, A Night of Stars, Celebrity Bartender Bash, and Cruisin’ Boozin’ & Schmoozin’. John Driscoll, who plays Philip “Chance” Chancellor on The Young and the Restless, talked with NI about his participation. (soapfest.com) —Kat Smith ■ Which event in SoapFest are you most looking forward to? It’s hard to choose, but I love the cruise. And I really enjoyed painting with the kids. It’s interesting to see how they react as soon as you get there, and then as they warm up to you. ■ What motivates you to devote time and attention to charity? Charity is very important, not just a blind charity where you write a check. This is special—there are organizations that do strong work but don’t always get the notoriety they deserve. I believe it’s our duty to help out where we can, due to our positions or resources. Giving becomes very addictive. ■ Do you fish or golf? My grandparents used to live at High Point, so I visited Naples frequently. I love to swim, and the Gulf waters are not as cold as the Atlantic Coast. Fishing is peaceful and I love the challenge in landing the fish. While I golf, I have a

NOVEL IDEAS Recently, Naples resident Kristy Kiernan published her third novel, Between Friends. The book, set in Naples, chronicles the experiences of two lifelong friends who face the moral implications of embryo donation and in-vitro fertilization, organ donation, and what we owe—or think we owe—friends and family. Between Friends follows Kiernan’s Catching Genius, a book club favorite in its fifth printing, and Matters of Faith, an IndieBound Notable Selection and a 2009 bronze medal winner at the Florida Book Awards. Kiernan is currently at work on her next novel, A Thousand Cranes. —Christina Wells

LET’S GET PHYSICAL When the Naples Gators Youth Football and Cheerleading program needed help with physicals this year, Dr. Joel Ying of Physicians Regional Medical Center came to the rescue. Ying, a specialist in pediatrics and internal medicine, not only conducted the service, he did so free of charge. Ying opened his doors on a Saturday for more than 100 children who took advantage of the health screening. “Many of these kids would have not been able to pay for this service,” says Naples Gators President Steve Quinn. “We are proud to be associated with such a wonderful man who cares so much about the lives of so many.” —C.W.

INSPIRED BY ART Naples resident and international children’s author Joan J. Curley has published her seventh book, Lucian’s Boat. Curley refers to it as a simple, elegant story about nature’s wonder and the cyclical nature of time. Inspired by a painting titled Low Tide by award-winning artist and illustrator Tom Cardamone, the book features drawings by the artist, and an image of the original work that inspired the story. Lucian’s Boat is a tale of growth, and the continuing renewal in children’s dreams for the future. “The story is not just for children,” Curley says. “It is also for parents as they witness and nurture the growth and development of their children. I hope to inspire parents to tune into their children’s interests—no matter what they might be.” —C.W.

PRINCELY SUMMER

Monaco offers perfect vacations for jet-setters and families alike. BY KIMBERLEY LOVATO

MICHAELA HART

It’s hard to think of Monaco without accompanying images of mega yachts and racecars, dashing tuxedo-clad gents and real-life princesses. In truth, this vision is not far off. Every year, thousands of visitors from around the world fly, sail or drive their Ferraris to the fairytale principality on France’s southern coast to soak up the sublime Mediterranean climate and enjoy scenes plucked straight out of a James Bond (or Grace Kelly) flick. But visitors will be surprised to find Monaco is accessible to us mere mortals too, with a familial appeal and an overflowing calendar of summer

MUSICAL MONACO The royal courtyard of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco is the enchanted location for a series of outdoor performances in July and August by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a must for classical music lovers. HIGH SPIRITS SPOOKILY AGILE AND HAUNTINGLY SMOOTH, DRIVING ROLLS-ROYCE’S NEW GHOST IS A TRUE OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD EXPERIENCE. BY HOWARD WALKER

32 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Ghost. Never has the name of an automobile so perfectly encapsulated its character. The way this magical machine glides oh-so-silently across the blacktop, seemingly suspended on a bed of fluffed-up feathers, is nothing less than ghostly. As for the surge of power from its mighty twin-turbocharged V-12 engine as it compresses you firmly, but gently, into the seat back? Truly spirited. And the only way to describe this car’s jaw-dropping ability to scythe through curves and corners like some hot-shot sports car? Totally, utterly spooky. Of course, you could characterize Rolls-Royce’s brand new Ghost super-sedan as phantom-like, but that analogy is best reserved for the Ghost’s grander, more formal sibling. Here, in fact, is your everyday, drive-it-to-the-mall Roller. While the $380,000 Phantom ideally should be steered by a man wearing a peaked cap and answering to the name Jeeves, the $245,000 Ghost is for the complete, selfish, hedonistic enjoyment of the owner. Don’t think of it as a baby Rolls. It’s only 17 inches shorter than a Phantom, which means it still measures

close to 18 feet nose to tail. There are Caribbean islands that are smaller. What’s different about this car is its character. To reveal that the Ghost shares many of its greasy bits with BMW’s top-of-the-line 7 Series— BMW has owned Rolls-Royce since 1998—explains where it gets its speed and agility. And while that big, honking V-12 is related to the same one powering BMW’s sybaritic 760Li, for the Ghost it’s beefed up to a massive 6.6 liters to deliver a staggering 563 horsepower. It makes the Ghost, quite simply, the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever. Couple that with a Teflon-smooth 8-speed automatic and you have the ability to whoosh from standstill to 60 mph in an unthinkable 4.8 seconds. Gulfstream G5 jets on takeoff don’t cover ground this quickly. But the numbers are essentially meaningless. What is so truly, utterly remarkable about the way this car performs is its ghostly silence. Angels breathing, or Marcel Marceau in deep conversation, make more noise than a Ghost wafting along at 100 mph. And when you step on the gas to shake off those nasty paparazzi, there’s no roaring of

the engine or jolts from transmission kickdown. No, the V-12 simply unleashes its tree-stump-pulling 575 lb-ft of torque, the 8-speed auto performs its magic, and the car simply lunges toward the horizon as if being released from some invisible catapult. As the lucky driver, you take it all in from the elevated, Barcalounger-like comfort of the front throne, surrounded by more varnished wood than in a Maine boatyard and enough glove-soft leather to open an Hermès boutique. But the real joy is reserved for rear-seat passengers, who get the full royal treatment with a sofa-like bench that wouldn’t look out of place in the pages of Architectural Digest. In Rolls-Royce tradition, you enter through rear-hinged coach doors, stepping into a cocoon-like wonderland of perforated leather and fold-down picnic tables. Toggle a switch on the center armrest and the seatback reclines to encourage in-journey

snoozing. I never wanted to leave. The Rolls-Royce engineers have created an air suspension system designed to keep the Ghost perfectly flat and level, even when the car is cornering hard. So there’s no slithering from side to side when the driver is having way too much fun. Make no mistake, this is no mere automobile. Think of it as a rolling bubble of serenity, an escape capsule from the daily commute. A car to relish every day instead of just for special occasions. This is certainly one friendly Ghost I prefer to a Phantom any day. ◆ Automotive Editor Howard Walker can be reached at NIedit@ naplesillustrated.com.

SUMMER FLAVORS The summer offers the perfect opportunity to try new tastes at restaurants that opened during months when reservations may have been difficult to get, and calendars were full of social and charitable events. Sampling restaurants in a more leisurely manner is one of the benefits of being in Southwest Florida all year. Call ahead, though, because some restaurants change their hours during the summer or close to give their hard-working staff a chance to refresh. Here are some of the newcomers to the Naples dining scene: ■ Bert’s Seafood & Chowder House brings the taste of New England to Fifth Avenue South, with fried whole belly clams, clam chowder, and fish and seafood flown in daily. Also open on Fifth Avenue is Rossopomodoro in the former Fifth Avenue Pharmacy location. Rossopomodoro is a chain started in 1997 in Naples, Italy, with 80 locations, mostly in Italy, where it is the largest pizza chain. One of the owners, Francesca Neri, visited Naples, Florida, on vacation and now owns a home here. ■ Rudi’s European Cuisine offers a German and European menu in North Naples at 107th Street and U.S. 41. It is run by Chef Rudolf Fers, his wife, Maria, and children Tobias and Nadine, who relocated to Florida in 2008 from Frankfurt, Germany. An outdoor area with a tiki bar, waterfall, stage and seating offers a Neapolitan beer garden. ■ Tony C’s Place is a gourmet food market and café in the Neapolitan Shopping Center that combines the talent of Chef Annie Prizzi and Italian specialty food epicureans Tony and Carol Losacco. The market will feature pasta sauces, fresh salad and sandwich bars, a bakery, prepackaged meals and homemade soups.

HEALTHY FOOD Food and comfort have gone hand in hand for a long time. Award-winning chocolatier Norman Love of Norman Love Confections will provide some comfort to Hope HealthCare Services by donating five percent of Hope-related sales to the hospice care organization for one year. To contribute to the comfort of chocolate for the comfort of Hope HealthCare patients, order online at Hope.NormanLove.com. St. Matthew’s House provides comfort to the homeless and people with addictions through its homeless shelter, structured recovery program, feeding ministry, food pantry, and transitional housing, all of which exist entirely on donations. With more than 50 percent of Collier County’s public schoolchildren on reduced-cost or free lunches, the community need for the food pantry and feeding programs increases in the summer when those meals are no longer available, says Lisa Ellison, director of development. Besides making a donation, another way to help the programs is through use of SMH Catering, which helps train servers and chefs for the area’s hospitality industry while raising funds for St. Matthew’s House programs. STILL SUPER TUSCANY’S REVOLUTIONARY REDS SHOW STAYING POWER. BY MARK SPIVAK

Although coined in the United States, the term “super Tuscan” has become emblematic of the wine revolution that has occurred in Italy over the past few decades. Super Tuscan wines contain grape varieties not native to their region. It all started with Tignanello, a Chianti Classico made by the Antinori family. In 1971, Piero Antinori decided to blend a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon into the wine; as a result, he was forced to give up its DOC appellation and label it vino da tavola, or table wine. This audacious step led to the inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah into many of the traditional wines of Tuscany. Other branches of the Antinori family also helped blaze the trail. His cousin, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, had been growing Cabernet Sauvignon on his Bolgheri estate since the 1940s; the first commercial vintage of that wine, Sassicaia, was offered to the public in 1968. Ornellaia, an estate founded by Piero’s brother Lodovico, began 38 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

producing a Cabernet Sauvignon blend in 1985 and caught the attention of both wine writers and top collectors. By the 1990s, it seemed that every famous winery in the region was producing a super Tuscan. Terrabianca made Campaccio, and Tenuta Querciabella came out with Camartina—both blends of 70 percent Sangiovese and 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Argiano, an estate dating to 1580, released Solengo (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah), while Castello Banfi jumped into the ring with Summus (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah). Le Macchiole in Bolgheri introduced Paleo Rosso, composed primarily of Cabernet Franc, along with a single-vineyard Syrah called Scrio. While Chianti had originally contained Canaiolo and small amounts of white grapes, several wines (Felsina Fontalloro and Cepparello) gained distinction by being made from Sangiovese alone. Regardless of grape varieties, super Tuscans had several things in common. To begin with, most were expensive.

according to Piero Antinori. It was delicate in texture yet almost Port-like in flavor, with distinctive scents of soy, balsamic vinegar and stewed fruits. Fading slightly but surprisingly well-preserved, it provided a glimpse of twentieth-century wine history. ◆

The cost of planting new vineyards, aging the wine in new French oak barrels, and hiring the best “flying winemakers” (those who travel the world making wine) as consultants placed their retail prices in the $50 to $100 range. For another thing, the wines were far more appealing to American palates than old-style Chianti had been. The addition of grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, plus new oak, gave the wines an aroma and flavor profile U.S. consumers could relate to. How well do super Tuscans age? Do they stand the test of time? A glimpse at the answer was provided recently at an exceptional vertical tasting of Tignanello, which showcased excerpts from the wine’s four decades of production. The tasting was hosted by Alessia Antinori, the twenty-seventh generation of the family to be involved in the estate. The current vintage, 2006 ($95), was fresh and balanced, with tangy black cherry fruit and a long, juicy finish. The 2001 was a powerful wine, deep and resonant, with gamey scents of truffle and bacon fat. The equally impressive 1997, from a celebrated vintage in Tuscany, was pure and remarkably poised, accented by an abundance of cherries and blackberries. Even though the 1989 was starting to decline, it displayed a range of spice notes and an elegant, luscious texture. The highlight of the evening was the 1971, the year that provided the “turning point from quantity to quality” in Italian wine,

DIVE By Kathy Becker Photography by Kevin Sweeney

For Kevin Sweeney, founder of SCUBAdventures, the diving bug hit first, followed quickly by his desire to show others what he saw underwater through photography and by teaching them to dive. For Sweeney, diving, photographing and teaching work together. The photographs he has been taking underwater since 1973 inspire others to visit the deep, so he teaches them. He stays in the water by taking groups of students and other divers to his favorite spots around the world several times a year. 50 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

MAY/JUNE 2010 51

On a weeklong trip with divers to the Bay Islands of Honduras this spring, he shot 1,500 photographs. “It shows people who don’t dive what’s down there,” Sweeney says. “A small portion of people dive, but once you know about the underwater world, bringing pictures back up is providing a service.” One of his favorite parts of photography is lighting shots to bring out the vivid colors of the creatures in the sea. He also likes how photographs make something a couple of inches long, like a Christmas tree worm, appear big and beautiful. 52 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

“Photography is a bonus for us. People see the pictures and say, ‘Hey, I want to go there.’” 54 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Photographing also makes the dive experience more interactive. “Instead of just observing, there’s a reward,” he says. “There’s the after-dive fun of the pictures.” Some of his favorite places to dive are the Cocos Island off Costa Rica, Bonaire in the Caribbean, and Fiji. Although he’s surrounded by water in Southwest Florida, the Gulf waters do not offer many dive opportunities. “We don’t have it here,” he says. “It’s not quality water I can rely on. It’s too unpredictable, and you have to go too far out.” However, Naples is centrally located to a lot of good diving on the east coast of Florida and the Keys, and the Caribbean is just a couple of hours away. “Photography is a bonus for us,” he says. “People see the pictures and say, ‘Hey, I want to go there.’” u

SURFIN’ TURF Years after riding storm waves on the Gulf Coast, Neapolitan surfers meet twice a year in Costa Rica for the rides of their lives. BY SHAWN HOLIDAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE O’ROURKE

It’s the quintessential surf shack, albeit a magnificent three-story, five-bedroom, solid concrete bungalow that would be suitable in any Naples neighborhood. The cottage, located on a hill overlooking choice waves in Costa Rica, is owned by Naples attorney Chuck Kelly. Each May and September, he hosts a guys’ gathering of childhood friends who began surfing more modest waves near the Naples Pier. Through the years, the now middle-aged surfers have kept in touch as they continue searching for their own endless summer.

Dude Kelly is the ultimate dude. An accomplished estate planner and avid athlete, he created a posh beach pad in Costa Rica, where the agenda revolves around surfing. In his “board room” are more than a hundred surfboards to use just outside his back door at Playa Negra on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. For the eighth annual reunion at Casa Ola Perfecto, House of the Perfect Wave, Kelly invites old pals Pat Murphy, Kurt Neuman, Don DeVoe, Mike O’Rourke and brother Shaun Kelly, along with some 56 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

other surfers to the house he built in 2002. The reunion has grown to include a variety of guests whose main connection is surfing. The northwest coast of this beautiful, rugged country is well known for providing consistent waves for surfers of all levels to find their groove. “It’s just time in the water,” Kelly says. “And the more you surf, the more you want to surf better waves. This place in Costa Rica is a true treasure.” An Internet tide clock lets the surfers know the potential for waves during their visit. “I can’t recall ever seeing such a long period swell!!!,” Chuck enthuses in an e-mail blast to guests before the trip. “WOW!! Sweeeeeeeet!!” Upon arrival, the guests descend into a laid-back weekend where up to seven share a room with bunk beds to live like

fraternity brothers, although in luxury digs and without the mad keg parties. Surfing is the sole occupation, and meals are delivered twice a day to the casa, which has amenities including satellite TV, wireless Internet, a pool, two kitchens and a master suite upstairs. The pathway to the shoreline is lush grass irrigated to get the barefoot warriors beachside with only a board and leash. “There are times I don’t even leave the house,” Kelly says. “I think the vibe has a lot to do with Costa Rica.” Kelly and his brother grew up on the east coast of Florida, surfing on rented boards at South Beach before the family moved to Naples in 1966. Faced with a small town and flat water, they had to make do when winter and summer storms spat out waves. The Kellys were

MAY/JUNE 2010 59

close enough to the beach to seize the moment. Soon some classmates, including O’Rourke, Neuman and Murphy, joined them, and DeVoe showed up often at a decent spot near the Naples Pier. “We built racks to tow our boards behind our bikes so we wouldn’t have to rely on our parents,” Kelly says. “They called us the Lowdermilk gang, because we also surfed there.” Back then, only the young or foolish would attempt the puny waves offered by the Gulf of Mexico. Recreational options were limited for the youngsters of Naples, so surfing provided an exercise in patience and persistence. DeVoe, whose father started the eponymous car dealerships in Naples, says that surfing is something his whole family now participates in, but 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

his passion began with a bunch of bored kids. “We lived for the weekends,” DeVoe says, admitting that work took him away from surfing for 20 years. “This is so much fun; why did I ever quit?”

Vibe The year-round climate of Costa Rica’s Pacific Strip is similar to May in Naples, with steady breezes to blow away the accumulating steam. The climate, beautiful countryside and stable government have been attracting foreigners for decades. “It makes me forget everything,” Shaun Kelly says. “When I’m here, I don’t even think about work. For me, it’s a complete escape.”

Clockwise from right: The surfers relax in Kelly’s place. When the sun sets, fishing is good. Plenty of gorgeous sunsets are seen from Kelly’s pool.

62 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Costa Rica has become a surfing mecca with decent waves those young Neapolitan boys could only dream about. The paradise is only a two and a half hour flight from Miami. Kelly’s Land Rover, with a snorkel for the engine, comes in handy on the drive through dusty roads lined with steep ditches. He’s had water up to the windows trying to get to his casa. But when the group arrives, fresh fruit and ice-cold beer are waiting. A local masseuse is on standby to remedy any damage inflicted by the Pacific. One of the regulars is George Hawn, who also learned to surf on the Gulf Coast, only in Port Aransas, Texas, which boasts up to 250 days of surf each year. Hawn, a real estate developer in south Texas who moved to Naples full-time in 1993, helped found the Texas Surfing Museum. All four of his daughters have taken up the sport. “They all enjoy it,” he says. “I thought they ought to learn because it was something I enjoyed, and I met great people.”

Stoked Although he has surfed on five continents, from the tropics of Naples to the arctic waters of Chile, Kurt Neuman, who now lives in New Jersey, has his best ride in years. After shooting the barrel just as the sun drops, two locals who witness his ride high-five him as he paddles back out, asking about his age. While growing up in Naples with the gang, he could only dream of such rides. “It’s exhausting, physically and emotionally, but the rush is an incredible feeling,” says Bill Thomas, who lives in Naples and is a family office executive to the Collier family. Growing up in Orange County, California, Thomas learned to surf at age seven. Now the waves keep him young, along with riding his Harley, playing guitar and going to Metallica and Aerosmith concerts with his teenaged kids. “This is what keeps the drive alive,” he says. “And to have such an understanding spouse … it’s amazing. She views it as a gift.” u MAY/JUNE 2010 63

TIDE AND TRUE

Late spring is a good time to celebrate the surrounding waters. Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve holds Dive Into Oceans family fun day May 1. Visitors can try scuba and enjoy presentations about sea life, movies, lab tours, guided walks, a touch tank and interactive aquariums and exhibits. June 8 is World Oceans Day, officially recognized by the United Nations, to encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to all with hopes of conserving it. Plans for Rookery Bay’s celebration include environmental movies and interactive presentations. For World Oceans Day at the Naples Zoo, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums joins forces with Dr. Seuss, whose beloved children’s book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish celebrates 50 fun years. Families will get to know funny fish and learn how everyday actions impact their ocean home; 239-262-5409. A Naples institution, the Great Dock Canoe Race, themed Let the Games Begin, offers canoe races for teams of all levels, decorated canoes and a costume parade, at Crayton Cove May 8. Jointly sponsored by the Dock and Riverwalk Restaurants, it benefits Lighthouse of Collier; greatdockcanoerace.com. The show includes an extensive collection of memorabilia, including each of the princess’s Christmas cards featuring photos of her sons, and items related to other royals, such as a robe worn by a page during King George VI’s coronation. WINGS TO SOAR The Winged Foot Scholar Athlete Award was established by Dr. Charles Karpas, a former member of the Heisman Trophy Committee, and other members of the Collier Athletic Club in 1989 to recognize exceptional senior scholar athletes from each Collier County high school. Since the award is modeled after the Heisman Trophy, it is especially fitting that the keynote speaker at this year’s awards dinner will be Tim Tebow, 2007 Heisman winner and All American quarterback. Tebow, well known for both his record-breaking football seasons with the University of Florida Gators and his dedication to faith, charity and family, perfectly embodies the qualities the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation seeks to honor. The banquet takes place at the Naples Grande Beach Resort May 27; call 239-280-3258. 102 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Don’t fool yourself… APPEARANCE MATTERS! THE PROCEDURE: “tummy tuck” – Bafitis Integrated Liposculpture Abdominoplasty (“BILA”)

BEFORE

AFTER

By Dr. Harold Bafitis Appearance Does Matter! They say that your eyes are the window to your soul, but what about your tummy and torso?

Nothing is as bad, and negative to your overall appearance and ego, than an out-of-proportion torso and lower abdomen. Other people are unfortunately drawn to the defect rather than to the inner beauty of the individual. Compounding this problem is usually an inability to keep your abdomen flat, especially after a full meal. A lower abdominal bulge that will not go away, even after endless sit-ups. There is usually loose skin with significant stretch marks, especially after pregnancy or previous surgery. Often there is excess fat in the flanks and back. Even a compounding abdominal incisional hernia can be part of this “tummy” experience so common to women – even showing up in men. Often the gluteal area has lost its fullness; and now there is a “flat bottom” with a full rounded tummy!

WHY CIRCUMFERENTIAL TIGHTENING WORKS Usually removing loose skin alone cannot solve the problems stated above. To achieve results as seen in these dramatic preop and postop photos, newer and advanced, integrated procedures are employed. Often a “beer belly” as seen above can be completely corrected in a special modified surgery. Often, tightening abdominal muscles will provide internal support that will last a lifetime. This can be achieved by correcting any hernias that are present, as well as lipoplasty of the anterior and posterior hip rolls, low back and the entire abdomen. The circumferential contouring can create a dramatic improvement. The last step will be creating a more natural oval shape to the umbilicus (belly button) which will enhance a natural contour of the abdomen. With new fat grafting techniques, a fuller, more youthful gluteal (derriere) can be created that lasts!

CHALLENGES Dr. Bafitis has taken this surgery to a new level with his “BILA” procedure. By combining liposculpture, fat grafting, circumferential tightening, and abdominoplasty, this procedure can now be done with only IV sedation, or in selected patients monitored “awake” sedation. Patients no longer have to be bent forward for weeks and have worries about excessive tension at the incision line. The patient is usually up and walking within a few days (24-48 hours). Drains are limited and often not necessary. The patients and results speak for themselves.

Don’t trust the most difficult cosmetic procedure to someone less than an expert in the field.

GIVING BACK

DANCE PARTNER BY CHRISTINA WELLS

When it comes to charitable giving, Naples resident Eva Sugden Gomez strives for maximum impact. Education is key, she says, because the gift of knowledge keeps on giving. This philosophy, coupled with Sugden Gomez’s passion for the environment, fueled her decision to bequeath $2 million to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. The money will fund a new environmental planning center on the organization’s Collier County campus. The Sugden Gomez Environmental Planning Center will serve as the headquarters for the organization’s administrative, science, and policy offices, wet and dry laboratories and collaborative meeting spaces. When completed in 2011, the U.S. Green Building Council Gold LEED Standard building will be a testament to green and sustainable building and a model for others to follow. “I have such a strong interest in saving our planet and the species that live on it,” Sugden Gomez says. “I hope the work that will take place in this facility will raise awareness about the changes each of us needs to make out of concern for our environment. Its green building design is setting an example.” Sugden Gomez’s grant to the Conservancy enhances her extensive charitable resume, which continues the legacy of her parents, Herbert J. and Margaret S. Sugden. In addition to the environment, Sugden Gomez is dedicated to the wellbeing of children, and she embraces a passion for theater and the other arts. Sugden Gomez supports Florida Gulf Coast University, the American Red Cross in Lee and Collier counties, the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee, World Dance Arts Foundation, the Naples Players, the Naples Philharmonic, Smile Team, Child Fund, Opera Naples and the National Wildlife Foundation. It should be noted that Sugden Gomez is a competitor as well as a philanthropist. At the time of her interview, she was training for ballroom dancing’s World Pro Am Competition held in Nassau, Bahamas.
