FROM THE EDITOR
Once upon a time, weddings were as much about rules as romance. There was who sat on what side, who wore what color, who saw whom before the ceremony, and other Emily Post edicts that propelled many a bride into a protocol frenzy. When my oldest sister got married back in the ’70s, someone forgot to put candles in the church fellowship hall, and my horrified mother could barely stand upright in the receiving line from the shame. She would resurrect this oversight for nearly 40 years—“who’s ever heard of a reception without candles?!”—cementing the gravity of nuptial tradition. But that was something old. Today’s couples are embracing and expressing their personal style from savethe-date cards to seating arrangements and from more fashion choices to less cake frosting. We invite you to meet three brides with Naples ties who cleverly melded conventional mores with custom, au courant touches at extraordinary ceremonies that far surpassed standard fare. Whether at a private beach club, bucolic estate, or flourishing garden, their big days reflected not only their love but also their personalities. There’s Lucy Hayes Trombino, who sported bright pink stilettos under her classic Carolina Herrera gown; Brittany Wagner Scalia, whose bridesmaids wore jumpsuits; and Fiona Spahr Painter, whose table-number holders were little silver dinosaurs. Their stories, including how they met their husbands and what inspired their wedding themes, begin on page 54. Also in this issue, starting on page 23, we touch on two classic nuptial mainstays—tuxedos and monogramming—and discover a modern twist to each tradition that’s available in Naples. And for those planning a wedding here in town, you’ll want to visit page 26 for four venues that best portray the Paradise Coast, from tropical jungles to glowing sunsets. Ultimately, though, at least for many couples and their guests, nothing seals a lifetime commitment more completely than a thick, heavily iced slice from a towering wedding cake. But while still popular for some, three Naples bakers tell us that lighter layers and bite-sized treats, such as macarons and tarts, receive the most raves at today’s receptions. To see the sumptuous selections they created exclusively for Naples Illustrated, turn to page 70. We hope this issue uplifts and inspires you as you ponder getting married or reflect on the day that you and your betrothed exchanged vows. We also want to express our deepest thanks to the three newlywed couples who generously shared their stories and beautiful photographs with our readers. May you live happily ever after.

“I love a lady’s tuxedo,” says Dominic Lacquaniti. “In a sea of dresses, it shows power and confidence. When a lady walks in wearing a tuxedo, all heads turn.” The son of Rocco’s Tailor Shop founder Rocco Lacquaniti, who opened the Naples business in 1968, the younger Lacquaniti recalls attending a gala with a tuxedo-clad woman years ago and noticing the stir it caused. “She wore it with a white shirt, red lips, and her hair pulled back, and I knew I had something. It was different and elegant, and I could certainly see designing one in white
023_INSIDEROPEN_0519.indd 23
for a bride.” Lacquaniti, who plied his trade in textiles in New York before moving to Naples six years ago to continue the tailoring tradition started by his father, now will be designing under his own label: D. Lacquaniti Bespoke. The recently launched line includes custom-made jackets, pants, shirts, and suits for men and women, and, of course, tuxedos. For more about Lacquaniti, including his advice for when a bride should have her final fitting before the wedding, turn the page. NEW & NOW
Jacket REQUIRED cont. NI: What inspired you to launch your own label? Lacquaniti: I grew up in the clothing business because of my dad, but I never liked alterations. I figured that if I was going to fix problems, I was going to create my own. I’ve been doing custom clothes since 2013 as part of Rocco’s Tailor Shop, but I knew that I couldn’t create a national brand without a different name, which is how we ended up with D. Lacquaniti Bespoke. Right now, the line is strictly custom clothes. But next year, we plan to launch a ready-to-wear line. How did you learn your craft? I studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and at one point, when I was in textiles, I represented eight companies from Italy. But I love launching this line back home in Naples. This city is stylish yet relaxed, which is why I like things such as unconstructed jackets that have a softer fit. You can be comfortable and still look very put together. What’s your favorite thing to design? My genius is the jacket for a lady. Ladies spend a lot of time and money for a dress that gives them one look. But with a tuxedo, you can wear the pieces again and again. A friend of mine once paired her tuxedo pants with a gorgeous denim jacket. And, of course, you can wear the tuxedo jacket many different ways with pants or skirts. If a bride chooses a white tuxedo for her wedding, she can continue celebrating that day by creating new looks, both casual and formal. Speaking of alterations, when should a bride have a final fitting before the big day? My biggest tip for brides is that they should wait a minimum of two weeks before the wedding to do the final fitting. Every bride stresses, and most lose weight. Depending on how much work a gown or tuxedo needs, she’ll want to have the first few fittings several months out. But if she can hold off until about two weeks before the wedding for the final fitting, we can do the most accurate tailoring, and she’ll look her best. 24
Letter Perfect Whether on invitations or menus, embroidered linens or save-the-date cards, the trend with matrimonial monogramming is artistic personalization. “What we’re seeing right now are brides creating what I call a custom crest around one or two initials,” says Laura Melges, owner of Monogram Goods in Naples (monogramgoods.com). “Once I show them this type of thing—that they can include their pet or favorite sport or flowers or whatever’s important to the couple—they’re onboard. We had one couple who loved their dogs and had met on a tennis court, so we had an artist incorporate those elements into their design.” Embellished duograms, which feature either the two first or last initials of the couple, are popular as well. “You can’t use a monogram on a wedding invitation because the couple isn’t married yet,” says Sheryl Sashin, owner of stationer and gift shop Arabesque of Naples (arabesqueofnaples.com). “So we may start with a duogram on the invitation and then switch to a monogram on the wedding menu while using the same personalized artwork, such as a wreath of flowers, throughout all of the elements. It becomes a theme for the couple, and the continuity is nice.” Corinne Buonocore Strubel, whose family owns The Paper Merchant (thepaper merchantnaples.com), a Naples stationer since 1976, says custom-designed wreaths or crests sometimes extend even further than stationery and wedding accessories. “We’ve seen couples use the design they created on the dance floor at their reception,” she says. “And then from that day forward, it becomes an enduring symbol that can be used in a number of ways, like a family crest.” —L.G.

The Paradise Coast abounds with dreamy locales for your special day
Garden Grandeur Those searching for lush grounds and a dash of historic significance can look no further than Shangri-La Springs. This landmark property in Bonita Springs offers organic dining and will soon be able to host guests in its on-site hotel. Weddings can be held in light-filled indoor spaces or amid verdant outdoor areas comprising the namesake springs, a 95-year-old Mysore Fig tree, and Old Florida architecture. Your celebration will continue with customized meals featuring ingredients from the on-site garden, and conclude with dancing under a canopy of trees and stars. (shangrilasprings.com) Nautical Nuptials In Naples, waterfront weddings are de rigueur. Move from land to sea and exchange vows aboard the Naples Princess. This 105-foot yacht can ferry up to 149 guests around Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, making for a spectacular evolving backdrop. The ship has been dressed to impress with high-gloss cherry wood interiors, leather chairs, and a sophisticated sound system, as well as onboard catering. The best part: Dolphins playing in the ship’s wake and other feats of nature come free of charge. (naplesprincess cruises.com) 26

Sunset Solemnity Sometimes only a Naples sunset will do for a bridal backdrop, and the AAA Four Diamond–rated Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club delivers some doozies. This fullservice hotel has everything couples will need, including indoor and outdoor spaces to accommodate parties of all sizes, a first-rate culinary team, and event-planning support. For a seriously enamoring setting, opt for a ceremony on the beachfront lawn, with sweeping views of sugar sand beaches and the Gulf of Mexico. Wedding guests also enjoy access to the spa, pools, restaurants, tennis center, and golf course. (naplesbeachhotel.com)
Rainforest Romance For the bride-to-be who likes to walk on the wild side, the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens could be the perfect venue. Here, the chatter of tropical birds might accompany your vows, and the occasional jungle roar could accent your cocktail hour. There’s ample space for a ceremony, reception, and photos all within the zoo’s tropical grounds. Depending on the size of your gathering, location options range from Lagoon Loop, Black Bear Hammock, and the Rainforest Grove—the latter being the largest with seating for up to 350 with a tent or 400 without. Wedding packages also include a 20-minute animal encounter. (napleszoo.org)

DESIGN
ONE of a Kind
This unique local home merges Beaux Arts elements with PERSONAL touches By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Craig Hildebrand A particularly challenging issue for interior designers can be integrating a client’s treasured possessions into a new living environment. When Dwayne Bergmann, owner and principal designer of Dwayne Bergmann Interiors in Fort Myers, was presented with that very request, he embraced an aesthetic that is clean and modern as well as eclectic and timeless, thereby enabling him to incorporate the owners’ prized artwork and antiques into a thoroughly contemporary statement.

ABODE Marble floors and antiques updated with modern finishes bring a contemporary ease to the den and beyond.
“This home cannot be replicated and is not a design look that fits into any genre or coast,” he says. “The owners walked through a lot of model homes, and they wanted a unique look with their family pieces. We wanted them to have a vogue living experience.” Originally, the one-story property, located in the Estuary at Grey Oaks in Naples, boasted a Mediterranean vibe, complete with wood cabinetry and light-brown tiles. Bergmann eliminated the Tuscan traits in favor of a French-inspired approach, accented by an abundance of marble and a color palette of grays, metallics, blues, and light purples. “The house was dark, dreary, and had very little natural light,” he says. “We chose a Beaux Arts style so we could mix multiple style genres through multiple time periods.” To create a new feeling and brighten the 3,500-square-foot, four-bedroom home, Bergmann used white Calacatta marble flooring throughout. Walls were painted in a warm gray, with a slightly darker shade applied to the woodwork and molding to make them stand out. Bergmann’s successful marriage of the owners’ furniture and art with the Beaux Arts aesthetic is on full display in the opulent great room. The clients’ antique side tables and a heron painting by Shirley Greene complement two custom velvet sofas with reverse camel backs. The club chairs are finished in a Crypton performance fabric that has the look of tweed or twill. While the material is very practical (“I didn’t want the owners to have to worry about them,” explains Bergmann) it features a metallic thread blend that dramatically reflects the light. In lieu of a massive media cabinet that formerly dominated the room, Bergmann opted for a scalloped cabinet with just the right amount of sheen. In a similar vein, he swapped out heavy drapery with sheer panels that delicately frame 38

the clients’ Bombay chest. Custom wallpaper inside the moldings gracefully plays off of the drapes and showcases the flat-screen television, artwork, and lighting. Given the height of the room—which measures 14 feet tall—Bergmann knew it required a centerpiece. He decided to utilize an existing chandelier but updated it from traditional to glamorous by removing the shades, painting it a champagne-gold color, and adding crystals. A circular, mirrored coffee table and a wool Persian rug with silk threads of turquoise and teal complete the chic space that is both beautiful and welcoming. “This is not a ‘look-at’ room that is not used,” notes Bergmann. “The couple spends a significant amount of time in it.” Taking a cue from the sofas, the light-blue kitchen cabinets imbue this utilitarian area with joy. Bergmann swapped out dated hardware with more modern fixtures, and also flattened the high-hat countertops and replaced them with Calacatta gold quartz. The same Calacatta marble used for the floors extends to the back of the bar. Subway marble tiles and Silestone quartz appear on the walls and harken back to the home’s gray palette. In the dining room, Bergmann started with family heirloom Chippendale dining and buffet tables. To prevent the space from looking old, he brought in armless chairs upholstered
037_ABODE2_0519.indd 39
in a pink-blush fabric that complements the metallic-painted wood frames. As a counterpoint to the room’s antique furnishings, Bergmann designed a sleek buffet outfitted in a cherry blossom motif. “We relocated the mirror from the entry to the dining room and repositioned the owners’ artwork in a more purposeful way,” Bergmann says of this space and the home in its entirety. “We were looking for ways to incorporate pieces that are familiar and were acquired by the homeowners, [and weren’t] looking to change out their art collection.” The original den was dark and overly furnished, two factors that made the room feel quite small. By focusing 90 percent on function and 10 percent on design, Bergmann was able to strike the perfect balance between livability and enjoyability. A custom media center in a matte shade of dark blue accommodates office needs and also has a humidor for the owner’s cigar collection. Before The space features an array of finishes, textures, and materials. The back wall is covered in a rough wood hull (a type of grass cloth), and a set of club chairs are upholstered in a cream-colored

leather. The zebra fabric on the desk chair echoes the owners’ zebra rug and adds a certain sense of humor. On a sentimental note, the main artwork is a pair of portraits of the client’s grandmother and grandfather hung on opposite walls. Restful and resplendent, the master bedroom is as bright as it was once dark. Because the owners are dog lovers, Bergmann didn’t want to go overboard on custom linens, choosing instead high-quality, practical bedding that complements the nailhead headboard finished in chenille. Bespoke cabinets open to full hanging wardrobes that can fit all of the clients’ personal belongings. “The sitting chairs were favorites of hers and had always been part of the living room, so we reupholstered them and found a new home in the master
suite,” Bergmann says of the room’s sweet reading nook. Surrounded by Southwest Florida’s natural beauty and an open pool area, the covered lanai invites relaxation and communal celebration. Visually, the space—which also houses an outdoor kitchen and a wood-burning fireplace—represents a quirky deviation from the rest of the home, one characterized by the exuberant interplay of fun patterns and bright pops of fuchsia and lime green. As a whole, however, this area reflects Bergmann’s guiding philosophy of mixing beloved items with unexpected elements to arrive at a truly singular expression that honors the owners’ personalities, possessions, and points of view. «

ODE to Amsterdam
Europe’s current ‘IT’ city offers a multicultural mélange of pursuits By Mary Murray
Walking along Amsterdam’s curvaceous canals feels like stepping into a poem. Here, sights, sounds, and smells take on a lyrical life of their own. Buildings morph from piles of brick to old age personified, with tilting facades that reflect the passage of time. Bridges are not means of transportation but connective threads from one adventure to the next. Bountiful bikes erupt into a cacophony of bells and tire squeaks that perfectly captures the city’s energy. Tulips coalesce into a kaleidoscope of colors, an olfactory overload of perfumes. Amsterdam is unlike any other place on earth, and it’s fast becoming one of the most popular destinations of the twenty-first century.
045_ESCAPE_0519.indd 45
Heralded as the next Venice, Amsterdam has similar aesthetic charms— with its maze of man-made canals—but boasts a singular rebellious spirit. While many of its 20 million annual tourists will partake in the Red Light District’s nightlife, far more will find solace in a waterside stroll, visit world-class cultural attractions, dine at Dutch and global restaurants, and stay in stellar accommodations that merge Amsterdam’s iconography with luxury amenities. One such property is the Pulitzer Amsterdam (pulitzeramsterdam.com). Composed of 25 Golden Age houses, this stylish hotel is centrally located NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2019

within the city’s Canal Ring, between Prinsengracht (the “Prince’s Canal”) and Keizersgracht (the “Emperor’s Canal”). It’s adjacent to the Nine Streets shopping district, is a block away from the Anne Frank House, and is walking distance from most must-see sights. But beyond its convenient locale, the Pulitzer Amsterdam’s setting is truly magical. Guests can enjoy a latte or cocktail in the garden while listening to a symphony of chimes emanating from Westerkerk—the same church bells Anne Frank wrote about in her diary. You can also embark on a canal tour aboard the hotel’s saloon boat, a circa-1909 vessel that sets sail daily for 75-minute, narrated excursions. The Pulitzer Amsterdam’s reverence for its hometown is apparent upon arrival. Step into its vestibule and gaze up at the piano suspended from the ceiling; it’s a replica of the one used in the first Prinsengracht concert, which occurs every August atop
its eponymous canal. To the right is a flower shop that speaks to Amsterdam’s indelible tie to all things floral. Dutch visuals continue in the lobby, where chiaroscuro-esque lighting gives way to check-in stations fashioned out of blue-and-white tiles. This attention to detail extends to the wellappointed guestrooms. No two are exactly the same, but they do share commonalities, such as headboards that echo the shape of the ubiquitous gables. Guests will also love the stroopwafels—two thin cookies joined by a wisp of syrup—left at turndown service. Other accommodations include lavish Collector’s Suites themed to hobbies like art, reading, and music. Within its design philosophy, the Pulitzer Amsterdam celebrates each building’s quirks and venerates their one-time occupants. While the suites take liberty in imagining the interests of bygone residents, the on-site restaurant, Jansz, sources decor cues from the main entrance’s past life as a pharmacy, complete with an array of apothecary curiosities. The eatery was named for the structure’s original owner, a coppersmith named Volkert Jansz, so copper elements appear throughout. The menu features familiar ingredients elevated to an artform, such as luscious lobster risotto and a delicate pea soup sprinkled with sausage. Prior to dinner, sip specialty drinks inspired by literary figures at the hip hotel bar. Amsterdam as a whole provides a window into the Netherlands’ gastronomic past and present. Venture down the block to arrive at Restaurant ’t Zwaantje (zwaantje-restaurant.nl), which began as a traditional Dutch brown café where locals could unwind with a libation and a small meal. Not much has changed across its selection of home-style favorites like chicken in the pot, a hearty tomato-based stew.

1606, Rembrandt was poised to take advantage of this boom—and he had the talent to back it up. The Rembrandt House Museum (rembrandthuis.nl) provides a picture of his life at the height of his success, to include period-accurate furnishings and demonstrations of his etching and paint-making processes. Visitors can walk through the studio where Rembrandt produced such legendary compositions as The Night Watch, and bask in the same sunbeams in which the master worked. Fast-forward 250 years, and another native son demands the spotlight. Vincent van Gogh turned to painting in his late 20s and created the majority of his oeuvre—some 2,100 pieces—over the course of a decade, before committing suicide at age 37. An impressive cross section of his output and personal effects are on view at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum (vangoghmuseum.nl). The artist’s letters illuminate his innermost thoughts, while works such as Almond Blossom, Sunflowers, and numerous self-portraits showcase his knack for channeling inner turmoil into transcendent art. To further experience van Gogh’s lasting influence, make a beeline to the nearby Moco Museum (mocomuseum.com) to enter Roy Lichtenstein’s immersive 3-D interpretation of van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles. Regardless of how you spend your days in Amsterdam, save plenty of time for simple meandering. To the floating flower market, where fixed barges bloom with rainbow hues. To a coffee shop, where rich chocolate milk and herbal refreshments form the ultimate Dutch duo. And to the quaint neighborhood nooks, where strawberry-blonde cats roam the same cobblestone streets that have long intoxicated generations of artists, storytellers, and travelers. «

For another slice of the city’s culinary heritage, savor an Indonesian rijsttafel, or “rice table.” Indonesia was once a Dutch colony, so its cuisine is commonplace in Amsterdam. This particular feast stars rice accompanied by a dozen or so small dishes plus pickled condiments, and it’s the best way to try a range of delicacies. Sampurna (sampurna. com) serves a handful of rice table options, all of which require at least two people to consume. To gain insight into what’s new and now, check out Foodhallen (foodhallen.nl). Envisioned as an open-concept industrial marketplace, this amalgam of food stalls runs the gamut from tacos to banh mi and all the dim sum in between. It’s the ideal place to kick back with a craft beer and let the day slip away as you sample one delicious bite after another. In step with its dining scene, Amsterdam abounds in outstanding attractions. Three of its most impactful sights revolve around a few of the Netherlands’ most famous former residents. Make reservations for the Anne Frank House (annefrank.org), where the Frank family hid for two years during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. An audio guide tells Anne’s story—and those of so many others who suffered and perished in the Holocaust—as you weave through the cramped annex. Clippings of movie stars glued to the walls reveal Anne as a typical teenager, one who longed to return to normalcy. Her diary, also on display, hints at her budding writing abilities and her dreams of a better, brighter tomorrow. Head over to Jodenbreestraat (“Jewish Broad Street”) to tour the home of one of history’s greatest artists. In the seventeenth century, Amsterdam became a hub for industry and trade, resulting in an era of unprecedented prosperity and growth known as the Dutch Golden Age. Within this milieu, the arts thrived as wealthy individuals commissioned portraits and other fine works. Born in

The new, mega-chic Baha Mar impresses as the mother of all megaresorts By Paul Rubio The phrase “bigger is better” doesn’t typically apply to luxury island resorts, but the new 1,000-acre, 2,300-room Baha Mar complex on Nassau’s dreamy Cable Beach tells a different story. Ten years and $4.2 billion in the making, Baha Mar is a self-contained destination housing multiple hotels under three trusted brands (Grand Hyatt, SLS, and Rosewood), as well as 42 restaurants and lounges, 11 swimming pools, and a 100,000-square-foot casino—the Caribbean’s largest. Add several dozen boutique shops, a flag-

ship ESPA spa, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, and, of course, a gorgeous wide beach with powdery white sands, and we arrive at the true—and possibly the original—definition of megaresort chic. What’s more, it’s just a one-hour flight from South Florida Despite its supersize, Baha Mar succeeds in delivering a personalized, world-class experience. Want an over-the-top, Vegas-style weekend on the beach? Overnight at The Reserve at Baha Mar, an exclusive hotel-within-a-hotel concept at the Grand Hyatt, where rooms glow from a whimsical mash-up of red lacquer inflections and flashy gold fixtures. High roll in the casino, party to the sounds of famous DJs at Bond nightclub, sleep off your hangover in the sun, and wake up later for retail therapy at resort boutiques like Rolex, Cartier, and Lilly Pulitzer. (Fun fact: This is how The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills rolled during a recent trip to Baha Mar.) Want a vacation that embodies understated beachside elegance? Check in to the Rosewood Baha Mar, where all rooms flaunt contemporary seaside flair and feature either a balcony or a terrace. Treat yourself to spa time, alternating between Sense, a Rosewood Spa exclusive to Rosewood guests, and the larger ESPA, accessible

to all Baha Mar visitors. Relax with a good read while sunbathing at the Quiet Pool, before having a light lunch at Costa, a seafood-forward Mexican restaurant presented as a series of islands and landbridges surrounded by koi ponds. Come evening, savor a multicourse dinner at steak house Carna by Dario Cecchini, an eighth-generation Italian butcher and TV personality. Here, the focus is on simple, honest ingredients and showcasing the best-of-the-best charcuterie, premier cuts of meat from around the world, and sublime shellfish selections. Side dishes like the charred sweet corn and whipped potatoes are equally epic. Looking to be the next Instagram darling? Book at the SLS Baha Mar, where rooms ooze a classic, South Beach–inspired, white-on-white aesthetic. Hang among an easy-on-the-eyes crowd during DJ-led afternoon pool parties, where you can rent your own cabana for added swagger. This is also the perfect place to show off your latest Vilebrequin swim trunks. We recommend picking up a pair from the three-piece limited-edition capsule collection designed by Baha Mar’s creative arts director, John Cox, and available at the in-house Vilebrequin outpost. Pop out of your cabana for a Bahama Mama at Out Island Bar; the legendary, rum-based cocktail was invented here in the 1950s at the bar’s former incarnation within the Nassau Beach Resort. Walk with Baha Mar’s resident baby Caribbean flamingos daily at 3:30 p.m. For better selfies, book alone time with your new feathered friends by organizing a private feeding with the resort’s CFO, or “chief flamingo officer.” In the evening, begin with aperitifs in the design-forward Monkey Bar and move on to French-pressed cocktails

at Sky Bar, the only rooftop bar in the Bahamas. Then embark on an Asian dining adventure with an omakase tasting menu at Katsuya by Starck, or refined Chinese cuisine at Shuang Ba, where house-made shrimp and pork dumplings, handcarved Peking duck, and Baijiu-based cocktails are served in an exquisite, Chinese-influenced dining room. While all of this sounds very adults-driven, there’s another dimension to Baha Mar that’s all about the kids. The hotels warmly welcome families, though Grand Hyatt attracts the lion’s share. Young ones can look forward to choosing between a half-dozen family-friendly swimming pools, beachside fun-in-the-sun, nonmotorized watersports, mesmerizing fountain waterworks, encounters with marine animals and birds, kids’ menus at most restaurants, and, soon, a massive water park. Best of all, couples, families, and groups can mix and match experiences across Baha Mar’s prolific offerings to pen their ideal Bahamian getaway. Baha Mar succeeds where other megaresorts have failed by giving travelers the luxury of choice and delivering world-class products, inclusive of stellar service. Operating on such a large scale typically compromises quality, but not here. Indeed, the new Baha Mar has surfaced as an idyllic island getaway for every type of traveler. BMW’s exquisite 2019 8 Series convertible is an open-top grand tourer EXTRAORDINAIRE By Howard Walker

hed a tear for poor, unfortunate Isadora Duncan. On the fateful night of September 14, 1927, the sultry American dancer and bon vivant climbed aboard a racy open-top convertible in Nice on the French Côte d’Azur. The flamboyant Madame Duncan had been gifted a long, flowing, hand-painted silk scarf, which she wore draped around her neck. As the sports car sped away, the scarf got caught up in one of the spoked wheels and... well, you can guess the rest. She was 50. Thankfully, there’s no need to sport such a scarf—at least for warming purposes—if you’re driving the gorgeous 2019 8 Series convertible from BMW. How come? It’s equipped with neck warmers. At the touch of a button, toasty air cascades from outlets integrated into the front seats. Not all that useful here in the Sunshine State come summer, but divine on a chilly January evening when you fancy a little alfresco cruising. This new convertible is the soft-top version of the potent flagship 8 Series coupe that went on sale toward the end of last year. For the time being, only one model is on offer, the M850i xDrive convertible starting at $121,400, or $9,500 more than the coupe.
52
PRICE: FROM $121,400 ENGINE: 4.4-LITER TWIN TURBO V-8 POWER: 523 HP TORQUE: 553 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC 0-60: 3.8 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 155 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 191/75 INCHES WEIGHT: 4,736 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE IT’S THE ULTIMATE TOP-DOWN DRIVING MACHINE.
This is convertible styling at its most striking. With the top lowered, that high waistline and angled-back windshield make this broad-shouldered four-seater look like it’s charging along at 150 mph even at standstill. The front end doesn’t disappoint, either. BMW transformed its huge kidney grille into a piece of jewelry; on our dark-blue test car, it came in a stunning matte copper finish. In terms of functionality, this convertible is a cloth-topped marvel. The multilayer roof lowers in a mere 14 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph. Raise all four side windows, pop in the standard mesh rear windblocker, and there’s hardly a rustle in the cockpit, even as the speedo reaches triple digits—let alone the amount of breeze needed to flutter a silk scarf, should you dare to wear one. BMW describes this new ride as a full four-seater, but that rear row

is really best suited for small kids—or very tolerant adults prepared to endure pain and suffering for a short jaunt to the beach or a local eatery. But what they lack in room they make up for in foldability. Bend flat the 50/50 split backrest and you’re left with a good amount of space to hold big bags. There’s also a sizable pass-through from the trunk to carry lengthier items. The cabin itself is a lovely place to be. The front seats are beautifully contoured and very huggy. The quality of the leathers and plastics is impeccable. The design of the seat paneling and stitching is master craftsmanship at its finest. As for the huge crystal shift knob, it looks
and feels like it came off of a Waterford decanter. Mechanically the convertible follows the track of the 8 Series coupe with just one engine available: BMW’s sensational twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. It cranks out an impressive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That’s more than enough to punch this hefty 4,736-pounder (roughly 260 pounds more than the coupe) to 60 in just 3.8 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. This force is transmitted to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic. To help ensure the convertible corners like it’s on invisible rails, the rear wheels steer and all four dampers are electronically adjustable. This is one glorious car to drive. It’s blisteringly fast, super responsive to the throttle, and wonderfully smooth and refined. Crossing continents in this grand tourer—top down, naturally—would be an absolute joy. But just to be on the safe side, maybe leave the long, flowy scarf at home. «

Although based in New York City, Lucy Hayes often visits Naples, where her parents, Sara and Webb Hayes, now live. The bride wore a Carolina Herrera gown, the bridesmaids sported custom dresses by Camilyn Beth, and the flower girls donned outfits designed and made by Lucy’s mother.

lthough she’s called New York City home for seven years, Naples is Lucy Hayes’ happy place. So when she and Chris Trombino married a year ago, there was no question about where the wedding would take place. “Florida is so bright and happy, and Naples is so cheery; I always envisioned getting married here,” she says. “When Chris and I go to Naples, we ride bikes and walk into town and go to the beach. Naples is magical.” Lucy balanced her own version of Florida’s casual elegance with strong family ties to tradition. The daughter of Webb and Sara Hayes, she chose to have her April 7 wedding at a private Naples beach club, selecting bold hues of orange and pink as her colors. “I wanted something people hadn’t seen before,” she explains. “When I started planning my wedding, I couldn’t get pink and orange out of my mind.” But before the color scheme and event details could fall into place, the bride had to meet her match. Lucy‚—who is the namesake of the wife of her great-great-great grandfather, former U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes—grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, but spent many vacations and holidays in Naples, where her grandparents owned a home and where her parents now reside about 70 percent of the time. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she is currently a recruiter in the Brooklyn advertising firm Elephant. Chris, a graduate of Fairfield University and director of equity trading at Strategas Research Partners, was raised in Huntington, Long Island, where his parents, Tony and Cathy Trombino, still live. The story of how Chris and Lucy came together is a cinematic “meetcute.” Though she felt sparks when they met at a party at his New York City apartment, she turned him down the first three times he asked her out. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to go out with him,” she says. “It’s just that he asked me out on a Monday night, and I’m not going out on Monday. And then he wanted me to go skiing with some of his friends, and I don’t ski.”

The Garden District centerpieces included tropical-hued flowers placed around illuminated branches and large palm leaves. For dessert, guests dined on donuts, mini Key lime pies, and a cake from Tony’s Off Third made of vanilla and chocolate layers covered in vanilla icing.
On their eventual first date, a snowstorm stranded them in the pub underneath Chris’ apartment building, a turn of events Lucy considers kismet. “It was sleeting and snowing, and he told me he had reservations for dinner at a restaurant, but we couldn’t get there in the weather, so we just ordered some food in the bar. We really got to know each other, and it was perfect. It’s now our favorite bar.” The proposal came a little more than two years later, on April 1. “Chris was turning off the radio and doing all these things to make me not realize it was April Fools’ Day because he didn’t want me to think it was a joke when he proposed,” Lucy says. They drove to the Hamptons for a beach weekend, though Lucy wasn’t too enthusiastic. “I took some convincing. It was raining, and Chris told me he wanted to see the waves on the beach, but 58
that’s not something he usually wants to do. He got down on one knee on the beach and asked me.” When the time finally came to walk down the aisle on her father’s arm, Lucy savored every second. “I always envisioned that moment would be special,” she says. “When I was walking down the aisle and I saw Chris peeking around peoples’ heads to see me, I will never forget it.” For her big day, the bride wore a classic, strapless gown by Carolina Herrera. But beneath the hem there was a glimpse of bright pink stilettos from a now-defunct brand called Hollywould. “My mom bought them for me when I was 14 and said, ‘One day you will wear these on a special day,’ and I never took them out of the box until my wedding, 15 years later. They were on sale and there was only one size left—my size.” To carry out her vision of an elegant-yet-casual tropical wedding, Lucy turned to florist and family friend Rufino Hernandez, owner of Garden District in Naples. “We had an instant connection that I’ve never felt with anyone except my husband,” she says. “He understood what I wanted and had a thousand ideas. It was love at first sight.” Hernandez outdid himself with the table designs, decorating each in a different color scheme using orange, purple, and pink, all massed around palm leaves and sparkling branches. “It looked almost like a tropical forest,” Lucy recalls. The Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church is so close to her parents’ house in Port Royal that the wedding party was able to dress at the house and walk to the church for the ceremony. An

hour later, they all boarded trolley cars for the short ride to the club. The couple’s 240 guests dined on a seafood buffet of crab, shrimp, and lobster, as well as a carving station. Afterward, they all danced until midnight. For Lucy, music is “one of the most important ingredients to a successful wedding.” ATL Groove Factory, a multipiece band, drove through the night to get to Naples, a trip that was well worth it according to the bride. “They really know how to throw a party,” she adds. Today, Lucy can’t think of a single thing she would change about her wedding. The only unsettling part of the planning process happened roughly six months prior to the event, when Hurricane Irma blew through the state in September 2017. “We went down to Florida in November and there were a lot of trees down, but everyone in Naples is so much more optimistic than they are in New York City,” she says. “Everyone at the church and the club just said ‘Oh, it will all be great.’ And it was.” «

Countryside Two Chicagoans with Naples ties say I Do at a picture-perfect Wisconsin estate By Loretta Grantham Photography by Bob and Dawn Davis
CHIC Nearly four years ago, Brittany Wagner and Daniel Scalia began building their life together at a hardware store—of sorts. “It sounds crazy, but we actually met at a Restoration Hardware,” she says of the home furnishings company, “and we realized when we looked at some of our pictures that that was the inspiration for our wedding. The Restoration Hardware in Chicago is awesome, like a conservatory, and I was there having brunch with my friends. One of them knew Dan through work, and when he came over to say hi, she introduced us.”

Brittany Wagner and Daniel Scalia wed at Riverbend, a private club reminiscent of an English countryside estate. The bride, whose parents, Shelly and Ralph Stayer, live in Port Royal, wore a gown by Berta Bridal.

The daughter of Shelly and Ralph Stayer of Naples, who works in marketing for the family’s Johnsonville sausage business, and the Boston-raised sports media executive wed September 1 in Kohler, Wisconsin, about two hours from Chicago where the couple lives. “We got married at Riverbend, an estate about 15 minutes from where I grew up—I’m a Wisconsin girl, born and raised—and what’s funny is that I’d dreamed of getting married at Riverbend my entire life,” Brittany recalls. “It’s this incredibly special place, and I couldn’t picture anywhere but there, and then we found out that they typically had only 100 to 150 people for a wedding. We didn’t want to exclude anyone because of a capacity limit, so I was devastated. Kohler is a small town, and there was only one venue— inside a ballroom at The American Club—that would work for around 400 people, but it wasn’t what I had in mind. My sister, Brooke, suggested that that we just drive over to Riverbend and take a look, and I refused. I thought, this is the most beautiful place in the world to me, and I don’t want to be reminded of that and be told no.” As luck would have it, the property’s general manager saw the pair cruising around and asked them to come inside—“he talked us off the ledge,” Brittany jokes—and Riverbend was able to partner with The American Club resort, which had a kitchen large enough to accommodate the couple’s guest list. She and Dan also wanted the ceremony, cocktails, and reception to be at the same location “so people could have different experiences without having to go somewhere else,” she explains. At Riverbend, a former governor’s mansion built in 1923 and designed in part by the world-renowned Olmsted Brothers, who created Central Park in New York City, guests could roam in and out of the sprawling private club and onto the meticulously landscaped grounds. “That’s how we ended up with a big tent with a clear, hard-top roof because we wanted a venue that held everyone for the ceremony, and we also wanted people to be able to see the trees and the river, and then we were like, ‘Oh, my gosh! This looks like Restoration Hardware in Chicago!’” The retailer had just opened its RH Chicago location, in a historic brick building with a glass- and steel-enclosed garden courtyard café and rooftop park, when the couple met in 2015. They got engaged about two years later and contacted Naples-based wedding planner Milda Vaivada and Chicago event designer Vince Hart of Kehoe Designs for advice. “One thing I loved about Vince is at the first meeting, he said, ‘Let’s not even talk

The couple, who said their vows surrounded by family and friends from Naples, Boston, and Wisconsin, wanted wedding elements that appealed to every guest. The vintage Ford Ranchero pickup they used as a Prosecco truck was discovered for sale on a Wisconsin country road.

about the wedding or your vision. I just want to talk to you and feel you out. Once I get to know you outside of the wedding world, then we can introduce all of the wedding craziness,’” Brittany recalls. “We knew that we had a big group coming up from Naples, and we knew we were going to have a ton of friends and family from Wisconsin, plus Dan’s side from the south side of Boston, and the most important thing was making everyone feel comfortable.” In keeping with that, the couple included contrasting elements that
were both casual (a vintage Ford Ranchero pickup that Brittany’s parents found for sale on a Wisconsin country road that they turned into a Prosecco truck) and formal (Dan’s white-jacket tuxedo at the reception, which he changed into after wearing a suit during the ceremony). They also wanted the wedding party’s attire to be something the participants could wear later, so Brittany chose navy Hayley Paige chiffon jumpsuits for her bridesmaids, and Dan selected custom suits for his groomsmen. “It’s great because we get texts and pictures all the time from our friends saying, ‘I wore the suit again!’ or ‘I wore the jumpsuit again!’ and it’s so fun,” she says. Brittany, meanwhile, wore a gown from Israeli designer Berta Balilti that was only the third dress she’d tried on. “There’s a funny story to that, too, because it was like Riverbend. It was meant to be. My mother was going to meet my sister and me in New York, and I felt this huge pressure to find a dress during that trip. So I started getting super nervous, and Brooke and I were talking about it and having a couple of mimosas in Chicago, and she said, ‘Let’s walk across the street [to a bridal shop] and try a few on.’ I remember coming out in the dress and thinking, ‘Oh, no! This isn’t supposed to happen like this!’ It was a total accident that we found ‘the one,’ and we decided not to say anything to Mom.” Shelly Stayer and her two daughters met in Manhattan a few weeks later, and it was in the third boutique, L’Fay, that the bride tried on the same gown from Berta Bridal that she’d worn in Chicago. “It was it!” she recalls. “So that’s when we had to tell Mom that I’d tried on the

dress before. I hadn’t wanted a sweetheart, strapless, half-trumpet, halfmermaid-type dress—I was determined to do something different—but that’s exactly what I got.” Brittany paired the gown with heels from family friend and wedding guest Salvatore Ferragamo and carried a bouquet with a locket that contained a picture of her late father, Larry Wagner. For the afterparty, she sported a sparkly Gatsby-era cocktail dress by Naeem Khan that reflected the 1920s vibe of the Riverbend estate—arched windows, ivy-covered walls, and an English countryside feel in the comfort of her Wisconsin roots. “Everything came together exactly the way it was supposed to, and I got to get married in the place I’d dreamed about since I was a little girl,” she says. “It was an absolutely perfect day.” «

Brittany’s Naeem Khan flapper dress reflected the Roaring Twenties era of Riverbend and was perfect for a dance with her stepfather, Ralph Stayer (opposite page). Daniel also changed for the reception, swapping a custom suit for a tuxedo.

A young couple embraces their love of nature for their Naples nuptials

lorida natives Fiona Spahr and Patrick Painter are passionate about the state’s abundance of tropical gardens. It’s only fitting that some of the area’s most picturesque natural settings have played key roles in their relationship. Fiona, a Sotheby’s real estate agent based in Wellington, and Patrick, who serves as general counsel for Hedrick Brothers Construction in West Palm Beach, met through a mutual friend at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. Fiona grew up in Naples where her father, Stephen Spahr, is senior vice president at Janney Montgomery Scott and her mother, Sharda Spahr, owns the Old Naples Surf Shop. For 15 years, Fiona wintered in Wellington and competed in the Winter Equestrian Festival. It was at a festival luncheon where she first encountered Patrick, who was raised on Florida’s east coast. Three years later, on New Year’s Day, Patrick popped the question at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach. While the gardens were actually closed that afternoon, Patrick had a friend who secured him a key, Fiona explains. “He wanted it to be a surprise, which was very sweet,” she says. “I knew we were going to meet his family for an early dinner that evening, but the walk around the garden when it was closed 66

Fiona purchased her Vera Wang gown at Ever After in Miami. She wanted a timeless dress that was simple and elegant but also a little romantic, so she reworked the top to incorporate off-the-shoulder straps made out of the same Chantilly lace as her cathedral-length veil, also made by Vera Wang.
was kind of out of the ordinary, so I wasn’t really surprised. It was lovely. We had the entire park to ourselves for about an hour and a half, and he set up a little picnic with Champagne.” For the nuptials, the couple returned to Fiona’s hometown and celebrated at the Naples Botanical Garden on April 7, 2018. The lush location houses many venues across its 170 acres, and Fiona and Patrick ended up staging their wedding in four unique spaces. The need for so many locales grew out of a “happy accident,” according to Fiona. At the time, the original garden they’d wanted for their reception was dominated by a 40-foot-tall animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex that was part of a special dinosaur exhibit. “That was a big surprise. At first, I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to have to have a dinosaurthemed wedding,’” she says, laughing. “I even made little silver dinosaurs to hold the table numbers.” In the end, they kept the table-number holders but decided on the progressive garden 68
reception instead. Luster Designs set the tone from the start by creating a custom watercolor crest and artwork reflecting flora from the Naples Botanical Garden, which appeared on the save-the-date cards, invitations, welcome boxes, napkins, and escort cards. Although Fiona and her mother were in sync with each other regarding the wedding plans, they realized they could use some expert help pulling it all together. Margaret Short of Margaret Events is a family friend, and the three meshed well. “She is so calm and collected, and I love her outlook,” Fiona says. “It seemed like the best natural fit.” When it came to design, Fiona and Margaret let the gardens dictate the decor. “Patrick and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, and we wanted it to be natural but elegant with a slight British West Indies island flair,” Fiona says. “We tweaked the decor according to which garden we were in.” After attending the early evening ceremony on the Performance Lawn overlooking natural

wetlands, the 125 guests strolled to the Lea Asian Garden for cocktails. Dinner was in the Kapnick Caribbean Garden, followed by dessert and dancing until midnight at Kapnick Hall. While it was a little challenging to plan each part of the reception in a different venue, the various spots reflected the couple’s love of gardens and their travels to the Caribbean and Bahamas. Vintage furniture from Unearthed Rentals gave Kapnick Hall the West Indies touch, while floral arrangements by Grace Lakes Florist paid homage to the verdant surrounds. Highlights included a huge driftwood piece overflowing with fuschia bougainvillea that hung over the dance floor. The wedding party’s table was graced with one long arrangement starring pink king protea mixed with blush roses and hydrangeas. The menu, courtesy of Lurcat Catering, was Floridian with a nod to each garden’s identity. Cocktail hour in the Lea Asian Garden, for example, featured spring rolls, beef empanadas, and a spicy fish dip. The signature cocktail was citrus-infused Champagne. Dinner entrées included roasted chicken or mahi-mahi. “I didn’t want anything heavy,” says Fiona. “I wanted it to be light and tropical.” In keeping with that theme, the meal concluded with a banana cake topped with chocolate and caramel ganache. The couple, both scuba divers, chose the tiny Kamalame Cay in the Bahamas for their honeymoon.

They make their home in West Palm Beach and, although Fiona has put away her riding boots for now, she still enjoys being a spectator. She even occasionally takes Patrick to Wellington Equestrian Festival events at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center—the site of their first meeting and the beginning of their love story. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2019

EASTERN Influence Shrimp teriyaki with udon noodles has been a popular fixture of the DaRuMa menu for the past five years. The preparation begins by searing zucchini, napa cabbage, broccoli, bell peppers, and shiitake mushrooms in a wok. After adding the udon noodles, the stir-fry is tossed with soba sauce (a mix of soy, oyster, and hoisin sauces, with a hint of sesame oil), topped with sautéed shrimp, and finished with a touch of teriyaki. “The flavors are very refreshing,” says executive chef Alejandro Van Duzee. “The crispy vegetables contrast with the softness of the noodles, and the soba sauce adds a note of tangy sweetness.” (darumarestaurant.com)

TRUE NORTH
Vacation VIBES For Naples residents unable to schedule a trip to the Hamptons this summer, there’s now a local alternative. Entrepreneur Brad Parker opened The Hampton Social in Mercato last December. Although Parker operates a handful of restaurants in the Chicago area, this is his first venture outside of the
Midwest. Thankfully, he is just as enthusiastic about Southwest Florida and the Paradise Coast as he is about the trendy Long Island vacation mecca. “My grandparents lived in Naples when I was growing up, and I have fond memories of the time I spent here,” he says. “I wanted to create a space that was fun, relaxing, and gave people the sense they were truly on vacation.” He describes The Hampton Social as “an East Coast lifestyle seafood restaurant.” The menu is an eclectic mix of raw bar items, brick-oven pizza, handhelds, bar bites, and small and large plates. The centerpiece of the wine list is the Rosé All Day section, comprising a dozen options ranging in style from Bon Jovi’s Hampton Water to the
classic Domaines Ott. The emphasis on this easy-drinking, approachable, and affordable libation captures the atmosphere of the Hamptons, which sometimes suffers from a shortage of pink wine at the height of the summer. “We didn’t feel there was a similar concept in Naples or elsewhere,” says Parker. “It’s a place to hang out with friends and family, share food and wine, take pictures and post them on social media. More than just a restaurant, we wanted to create a fullon experience.” (thehamptonsocial.com)
classic chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin to pumpkin spice, coconut pecan, and Reese’s peanut butter cup double chocolate. He opened his first store on Davis Boulevard in 2016 and moved to a larger facility in Kings Lake Square this past March. The heart of Mitch’s Cookies is the dessert bar and soda fountain. It recreates a traditional 1950s malt shop, complete with an antique cash register, swivel chairs, and a refurbished Hamilton Beach mixer. As Mitchell notes, the appeal cuts across generational lines. “People my age will
order a milkshake and relive their high school days. When the kids come in, they actually put down their cell phones and get involved. We like to say that customers take a step back in time and create new old-fashioned memories.” (mitchscookies.com)
Cookie Cutter William “Mitch” Mitchell may be famous throughout Naples for his cookies, but he’s really in the nostalgia business. “Our cookies remind people of their childhood,” says the owner of Mitch’s Cookies. “They weigh nearly five ounces and are very cakelike, with a chewy center. The ingredients are all natural, just like the old days; we don’t do gluten-free or sugar-free. My mother was a great baker, and I think I inherited the gene from her.” Mitchell started baking as a hobby and gave his cookies away as gifts. Over the years, he developed the 30-plus recipes he sells today—everything from 90 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

DON’T ROCK THE BOAT ONE OF NAPLES’ MOST ICONIC RESTAURANTS IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT, BUT DON’T PANIC: IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL AT THE DOCK. When Vin DePasquale opened the eatery in 1976, Crayton Cove wasn’t yet a household name. His first advertising campaign was “I bet you can’t find us,” with prizes doled out to the lucky explorers who did. Over the years, however, The Dock has become firmly rooted in the community. DePasquale and company started the Great Dock Canoe Race, now run by the Naples Junior Chamber, and helped organize the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. DePasquale also befriended Doug Traina, who approached him last year
about buying the restaurant. They eventually worked out a deal, although DePasquale will retain ownership of Riverwalk in Tin City. He’ll also stay on as a consultant to mentor Traina’s son Daniel in the fine points of running a complicated restaurant. “I probably couldn’t have designed a better exit strategy,” says DePasquale. “I wasn’t ready to retire completely. And the Traina family will need some advice on how to manage a high-volume establishment with virtually no storage space. They’re very sincere about keeping the flavor of the place exactly the way it is.” For residents and tourists alike, The Dock is far more than a restaurant or watering hole with a great view. “We have employees who have been here for 40 years,” DePasquale says. “And we’re on a first-name basis with many of our customers. Over time, we’ve become part of the fabric of Naples.” (dockcraytoncove.com)

Time After Time
How MILLENNIALS are impacting the alcohol industry, now and in the years to come
Sensing a shift in the market, Diageo purchased Seedlip, which creates nonalcoholic spirits. Pictured here is the Garden Spritz made from Seedlip products.

ROB LAWSON
By Mark Spivak The hottest beverage trend for 2019 is turning out to be low- and no-alcohol drinks—but not for the reasons you might expect. According to industry sources, the shift has three main drivers: 1. The baby boomer generation, which has consumed a large amount of the high-end wine sold in recent years, is aging and drinking less. 2. The millennials exploding on the consumer horizon have less disposable income for now, and they tend to be unimpressed by factors such as designated vineyards and superstar winemakers. 3. While red wine has been touted as having positive effects on cholesterol and heart disease (remember the French Paradox?), studies now suggest that no amount of alcohol is good for your health. All these factors have combined to produce a seemingly perfect storm in the alcohol sector. While the total decline in U.S. alcohol sales was only slightly less than 1 percent last year, the fact is that consumption has been receding for several decades. The hardest-hit category is beer. If you don’t think so, consider this: Last June, giant brewer AnheuserBusch InBev created a role for a chief non-alcoholic beverages officer. Faced with declining demand for Budweiser and other products, the company is investing in spiked coconut water. They are not alone. Molson Coors is turning to kombucha, and Diageo— home of dominant brands such as Smirnoff—has purchased a minority stake in a nonalcoholic spirit called Seedlip, made from fresh herbs, vegetables, and spices, and distilled in copper pot stills just like the real thing. However, there’s also some good news. Talk to anyone in the industry long enough, and you’ll discover that millennials are the Holy Grail. For producers, decoding the preferences of this generation can mean the difference between mere survival and winning the lottery. While millennials tend to be supremely health-conscious, preliminary research indicates that they’re not drinking less. Instead, they tend to restrict their drinking to social situations (as

as it’s difficult to charge hundreds of dollars for wine in a can. Even though the millennial generation has yet to hit its peak earning years, they’re as quality-oriented as their forebears. They tend to prefer alcoholic products that are artisanal, handcrafted, and small-batch, and have been one of the prime forces behind the burgeoning craft beer movement. Nielsen also found them to be value-conscious, with 40 percent equating price and quality (as opposed to 27 percent of boomers). Based on this data, what can we expect to find in the alcohol sector 20 years from now? Look for more variety and innovation, a closer correlation between quality and price, more personalized and distinctive brands—and a stronger emphasis on products that are lower in alcohol.
JAKOB LAYMAN
opposed to keeping alcohol at home), they monitor their consumption carefully, and they are generally fussier about quality choices when they do drink. While it’s obviously impossible to generalize about a huge group of people, some data points are emerging. According to Nielsen, millennials only account for a quarter of U.S. adults over 21, yet they represent 35 percent of beer consumption and 32 percent of spirits consumption. The Wine Market Council finds they drink 42 percent of the wine consumed in this country. They’re adventurous; they’re twice as likely as boomers to drink canned wine, for example, and more likely to try something new when they go out. Yet, as mentioned, they’re typically unimpressed by the grand châteaux of Bordeaux and Napa. This is grim for some legendary wine estates,
Seedlip’s Garden 108 spirit is a blend of hay and pea distillates paired with rosemary, thyme, spearmint, and hops.

NOURISH
Life on the WEIL SIDE He was ahead of the curve in pioneering the field of holistic health and integrative medicine—and in rocking the facial hair that’s now de rigueur for hipsters everywhere. Author Andrew Weil, MD, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and the force behind a growing brand of wellness products and services, visited Naples recently for an event benefiting Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida. Weil discussed healthy aging, integrative medicine, the future of our health-care system, and food. The founder and co-owner of True Food Kitchen restaurants—which operates a location in Naples—emphasizes diet and nutrition as key to a healthy lifestyle. Turn the page for NI’s interview with the wellness guru. (drweil.com; truefoodkitchen.com)

BALANCE
Life on the WEIL SIDE, cont. NI: When and why did you begin studying natural and preventive wellness? Weil: I have a lifelong interest in plants, something that I got from my mother, and which she got from her mother. That led me to be a botany major as an undergrad at Harvard, and that started me on a career interest in medicinal plants. I also have a longstanding interest in the mind and how the mind interacts with the body.… I had begun looking at alternative medicine when I was in college, so I had all of these interests that go back a long way. When I finished my medical training, I felt that I hadn’t learned anything about how to keep people healthy and prevent disease. I also felt a lot of what I was taught to do in the way of treatment caused too much harm. I just felt there had to be better ways. How can people navigate the sea of conflicting health information out there? First, I would recommend my books, website, and newsletter as sources of valid information. I change what I say as science
changes. I also suggest people try to find a practitioner trained in integrated medicine. Our center’s website lists all our graduates, and they’re in all states and highly qualified to answer questions of that sort. About the beard. When did you start growing it? Thanksgiving Day of 1970. It’s become a trademark. I originally grew it because I started losing my hair at 16. My beard was very heavy, so I was always fighting to keep hair on the top and get it off the face, and I finally decided to let it do what it wanted. I got incredible criticism for it back in those days when beards were completely out of fashion. I finally watched it become so fashionable. What’s something we can do right now to live healthier? In the realm of nutrition, the simplest advice I can give is to avoid eating refined, processed, and manufactured food. It’s that simple. It’s causing all the problems. You want to eat whole, natural foods, as close to the way nature produces as possible.

A GRAIN OF SALT
Salt Cave
In halotherapy, participants recline in a calming, cave-like space while breathing in salt particles. Proponents say it helps heal many skin conditions, improves athletic performance, and eases respiratory problems. Although the treatment has been available for more than a century, so far few U.S. scientific studies have been conducted to support the medical claims. However, Norman Edelman, MD, a senior scientific advisor to the American Lung Association, recently shared his belief that salt therapy can relieve symptoms of obstructive lung diseases because the salt particles draw water into airways, thereby thinning mucus and making it easier to expel. Although the jury is still out on proven health benefits, halotherapy has scores of followers and its relaxing effects are confirmed. Locally, it’s offered at the Salt Cave (saltcave.us) and Salt Therapy Grotto & Spa (salttherapy grotto.com). Consult your doctor before trying halotherapy if you have a serious health issue.

Most dentists don’t understand the importance of a healthy oral system.
WE DO!
While it may not be as easy as uttering “Alexa, make me fit,” advanced technology can optimize fitness results. The Exercise Coach in Naples is a high-tech smart gym that relies on computers, robotics, and data collected for each individual instead of traditional weights and machines. It’s the first of three Southwest Florida franchises planned by Neapolitan Tom Wooden, who formerly worked in financial services. The studio offers personalized programs that maximize muscle-building efficiency in two 20-minute weekly workouts. The sessions combine technology with one-on-one guidance from certified coaches who blend strength and interval cardio training. “I started out with a business-analysis approach,” Wooden says. Ultimately what convinced the former U.S. Air Force officer to pick this franchise is that “it was unlike anything I’d ever experienced in a gym. That’s what closed the deal, doing the workout and experiencing the results.” (northnaples.exercisecoach.com)
FRIZZ NO MORE
Leave the halo to the angels. To tame that aura of humidity-affected hair, turn to the experts. Tanya Krochuk, franchise partner of Blo Blow Dry Bar in Naples offers these tips. (blomedry.com/locations/blo-naples) • Start at the sink. Use a shampoo and conditioner that seal the cuticle, such as Unite’s Lazer Straight Shampoo and Conditioner. • Products are key. Krochuk’s favorite product to beat humidity is Color Wow Dream Coat. “It’s a one-of-akind anti-humidity sealant that acts as a raincoat for your hair, keeping your mane perfectly tamed. And it lasts three or four shampoos.” • Use the concentrator nozzle. After rough drying hair, always aim the concentrator down the hair shaft to help minimize frizz and maximize smoothness. • Dry hair, then dry some more. Make sure hair is 100-percent dry or it will frizz up the minute you step outside. • The finish. Unite Glossing Spray has anti-humectants and gives hair added shine. Or, apply a very small amount of Unite’s Smooth & Shine. • On the go. Carry a travel-size styling cream like Color Wow One Minute Transformation to calm frizz and moisturize dull ends throughout the day.
099_BALANCE_0519.indd 103
And we strive to educate each and every patient on the facts. Did you know that at least 80% of American adults have gum inflammation/disease? Gum disease is linked with blood vessel disease, heart attacks and strokes. Gum disease and tooth loss also increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, if an individual has diabetes and bleeding gums, the risk of a premature death increases by 400 to 700 percent. Essentially, your mouth talks to your body and your body talks to your mouth. To assess each patient’s oral health, we have an Oral DNA test available. This provides us with concrete evidence of the high-risk bacteria living in the mouth. When these tests come back with high levels of high-risk bacteria, we have an array of methods we can use to fight these bacteria and make sure that they will never come back. Here at the office of Dr Mantikas, we strive for optimal dental fitness. What’s a healthy outside without a healthy inside? The answer is simple. It’s nothing. So, YOU work on the outside and WE WILL work on the inside.

Second NATURE Artists have long sought solace and inspiration in nature. Claude Monet—who dedicated decades of his life to painting his famed Water Lilies series—found flora so captivating that he once said, “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.” While Monet’s Giverny might be a few thousand miles away, Naples and the local landscape is also a worthy muse. Beginning May 3, the Naples Botanical Garden will showcase one area artist’s interpretation of Southwest Florida’s ample beauty in “Natural Oasis: The Art of Mally Khorasantchi.” Born in Germany, Khorasantchi moved to Florida in 1992 and swiftly embraced her adopted home in her paintings and collages. Over the past decade, she’s shown throughout the state and on a national level, including a solo exhibition at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. “Natural Oasis” will feature 10 of Khorasantchi’s pieces on display at Kapnick Hall through September 2. Access to the special exhibit is included in admission to the Naples Botanical Garden. (naplesgarden.org)

MEMORY LANE WHEN REFLECTING UPON PLAYWRIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, NEIL SIMON RANKS AMONG THE VERY BEST. THE AMERICAN DRAMATIST—WHO PASSED AWAY LAST SUMMER AT THE AGE OF 91—PENNED DOZENS OF SCRIPTS AND SCREENPLAYS, RACKED UP NUMEROUS ACCOLADES, AND EVEN HAD A BROADWAY THEATER NAMED IN HIS HONOR DURING HIS LIFETIME. FROM MAY 1-26, THE NAPLES PLAYERS WILL STAGE ONE OF SIMON’S MOST BELOVED WORKS, THE MEMORY PLAY LOST IN YONKERS. WRITTEN IN THE EARLY 1990S BUT SET IN 1942, THE STORY FOLLOWS TWO TEENAGE BROTHERS WHO GO TO LIVE WITH THEIR GRANDMOTHER AND AN AUNT WHO, AT 35, HAS NEVER LEFT HOME AND RESIDES IN A STATE OF ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. TOGETHER, GRANDMA KURNITZ AND AUNT BELLA FORM A DISHEARTENED ODD COUPLE (IN CONTRAST TO SIMON’S MOST FAMOUS PAIRING OF FELIX AND OSCAR), CREATING A TENSE HOME ENVIRONMENT FOR THE BOYS. THESE ELEMENTS MAKE FOR A CATHARTIC DRAMA AND FREQUENTLY HUMOROUS TALE THAT EARNED SIMON BOTH THE TONY AWARD FOR BEST PLAY AND THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR DRAMA. (NAPLESPLAYERS.ORG)
