Rays of SUNSHINE

If you look at the back of my SUV, you won’t find a vanity license plate. However, I do admire the creativity, humor, and even brassiness these tags sometimes convey to an audience of highway-faring strangers. A few weeks ago, during my morning commute, one of these emboldened pieces of aluminum gave pause and made me smile. The owner of this Florida-registered musing, in my estimation, had encapsulated life in the Sunshine State with a mere seven letters: BUSY LVN.

There’s no denying summer brings a slower pace to Naples, but that doesn’t mean there’s a dearth of delightful pursuits. For some, the season affords time to really get busy living and indulge in activities that are so difficult to make time for during the in-season bustle—as is the case for Scott and Jennifer O’Dell, the handsome couple gracing this issue’s cover. Starting on page 72, learn more about the O’Dells, long-time Naples residents and dedicated philanthropists, including how they pass a perfect summer day in paradise as well as how they warm the hearts of others.

We also explore summer recreation and relaxation on the road. Our editors put on their traveling caps and culled the best of the state to bring you a 14-page compilation of road-trip-worthy destinations. Beginning on page 78, discover fabulous fare and unique eats, Florida’s most amazing outdoor and wildlife adventures, and the best hotels and resorts to rest your head.

For me, summer is more spirited and refreshing with delectable sips, so I’m excited we’re able to shine light on a handful of fruitful Florida wineries. In “Uncorking the Sunshine State,” author Jules Aron, a talented mixologist and drink enthusiast, surveys five properties that use mostly Muscadine grapes as well as tropical fruits and citrus varieties. Flip to page 102 to learn more about these lesser-known estates and check out a few wine-based cocktail recipes, too.

Finally, the phrase “busy living” also applies to Kaleigh Grover, our highly esteemed publisher. After 17 years, Kaleigh has decided to take a much-deserved retirement. While our offices won’t be the same without her deft leadership, wonderful wit, and bright smile, we are thrilled for her as she begins her next chapter on a charming farm nestled amid the rolling hills of the Bluegrass State. She will be sorely missed in our great community.

Here’s to Kaleigh, a wonderful summer holiday, and a life of busy living!
