Ah, September … such a bittersweet month. The summer—altogether too short—has come to a close; goodbye, quiet streets, flip-flops, hail-sized mosquitoes and lazy, long dinners with family and friends who aren’t in a rush to get to another place. As we transition into season, I realize I will have to wait 12 long months until my next birthday, and my girls’ bedrooms will soon be left in a seldom-seen pristine condition as they make their way back to their respective colleges. It’s funny how the things that used to drive me crazy are the things I miss the most while they are away. But there is so much sweetness to balance out the end-of-summer blues. The children at the bus stops with their new backpacks and pencil cases, anxious to meet their new teachers; all of my friends back in town from their various and sundry summer excursions; and a whole new treat to behold, a fabulous new look for Naples Illustrated! Our advertisers are always sharing with us that they love how their ads look in the magazine; the placement alongside the gorgeous photography and interesting editorial enhances their message. Now, we are giving them even more to love. We are bigger—almost an inch wider, making for eye-popping images and graphics—and better—we have redesigned our departments and features to make them even more engaging and relevant for our readers. Everyone at Palm Beach Media Group has worked long and hard on the redesign, and I have never been so proud of our magazine. When we gathered in our conference room for the debut of the new look, the creative players explained with pride how every new element will enhance the reading experience. The ooohs and aaahs were contagious. I must quote my mother and say, “I am all puffed up like a peacock!” Turn the pages and see for yourself. I hope you will agree, Naples Illustrated is better than ever!

win this!

Looking for a getaway, Palm Beach-style? You may be in luck because The Brazilian Court Hotel & Beach Club is offereing an irresistible prize to our readers. Situated in the heart of the tony island, the resort radiates that effortlessly chic Palm Beach lifestyle and is just blocks from the beach and famed shopping destination Worth Avenue. In addition to posh digs, the hotel is known for its culinary acumen—Café Boulud, need we say more?—and the ultimate in indulgence, the Frédéric Fekkai Salon & Spa. All of it (two nights for you and a guest, dinner and two spa treatments) may be yours if you head to naplesil lustrated.com/TheBrazilianCourt and enter for a chance to win.

The hardest part about planning a feature like this is that not all the candidates make it into the magazine. What started as a friendly, community-driven contest among 12 local heroes resulted in a tight race to pick seven men to appear in our printed pages. You can read about the five other exceptional and applause-worthy individuals online: Matt Berman, Andrew Daane, Patrick O’Connor, Sam Saad and Brien Spina.

Keeping Business Local The Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District unrolled a series of incentives for residents to make shopping at our local independent boutiques an even sweeter proposition. Get the 411 from us, and then treat yourself to some guilt-free retail therapy.

wanted to do and I said I wanted to be a baseball player! The strange part is that I never even watched games on television except for the World Series, and when I was drafted by the San Diego Padres, I seriously did not know there was a team called the Padres.

When the baseball calendar hits a fever pitch, chances are the voice guiding you through the games is none other than Naples’ own John Kruk, an ESPN commentator for nearly a decade on Baseball Tonight and a three-time All-Star first baseman with the Phillies, Padres and White Sox. Known for his humor (and calling it like it is), Kruk travels to stadiums across the country each Sunday throughout the regular season, but the majority of the year he’s a proud resident of Collier County. He tirelessly gives time to local causes, most notably Seacrest Catch more from John Kruk Country Day School (Kyle, on naplesillustrated.com. 11, and Keira, 8, children with

wife, Melissa, attend). Aside from helping with fundraisers—last year alone, his and others’ efforts brought in enough to pay for the construction of a softball field on the academy’s campus—he will often stop by gym classes on the fly to coach the kids. An accidental star who didn’t grow up thinking he was destined to excel in the big leagues, Kruk wasn’t even planning on playing ball in college until a team recruited him. —Dorothea Hunter Sönne Do you believe in fate? Yes, I guess I do. Everything happens for a reason. My mom told me once that when I was in the fifth grade, someone asked me what I

You are outspoken about your belief that children face too much pressure too soon. Any advice? My brothers and I played sports growing up because we loved to. I coach my daughter’s two softball teams, and I still get excited at games. I tell both my kids to not make Little League their number one priority. I’ve heard horror stories from around the state that parents force kids to focus on baseball and give up other sports. I think that’s the biggest crime. Believe me, playing other sports makes you a better athlete, period. What are your guilty pleasures? I like ice cream. But really, golf. I belong to Hideout, and I’ve gone crazy with trying to find the right clubs and perfecting my swing. It has become an obsession. Do you have a favorite sport? Softball. The girls who play it do so for the love of the game. There are no multimillion-dollar contracts and endorsement deals waiting for them. Because we built the field at Seacrest last year, the coach has said more girls are expressing interest. We’re hoping to set up clinics in November that will be open to the public with two Olympic softball players. Stay tuned. « NAPLESillustrated.com | September 2013

If you’re reading this hot off the press, you may be able to catch the penultimate night of the popular annual series as well when the five members of high-energy Vodkanauts jam on August 24. Also noteworthy is that both acts are making their SummerJazz debut. (naplesbeachhotel.com)

The concert and parking are free, but bring plenty of cash—the hotel’s beach bars stir up killer cocktails and other rockin’ refreshments.

See for yourself

There are now novel ways to make learning about our area’s past a blast. If you’ve wondered what the city looked like in the wake of massive Hurricane Donna, or before development radically altered the scene, the Naples Historical Society (napleshistoricalsociety.org) recently opened its Archival Viewing Center at 107 Broad Avenue, where visitors can access digital versions of an enormous trove of photos, documents and other images. Plus the organization is in its second year of offering a complete schedule of guided tours of Palm Cottage and Norris Gardens on a year-round basis. And for fun facts right at your fingertips, Naples Mayor John Sorey recently announced the completion of the city’s heritage trail app. The “Bronze Marker Story Map” is a free download (naplesgov.com), and you can zero in on details of local points of interest during the years 1886 to 1948.

A management consultant in the hospitality, private club and resort community arenas by trade, he also holds a real estate license and is a former personal trainer. He pursued his love of the arts with a stint as president and director of operations for the Naples International Film Festival, which is gearing up for its fifth anniversary season this November. “The festival is about people coming together to celebrate film—filmmakers and those who love the medium,” he says. For his latest venture, Rowe drew inspiration from his own experiences, the latest scientific research and Eastern philosophies. As the CEO and cofounder of The Joy Project International, he’s focused on the company’s just-launched Joybug, a behavior-modification software program. The idea behind it is that by sending users three to five emails a day with customized can-do messages, short meditation videos and a joy-o-meter to rate their mood, it will cause them to stop and focus on the positive things in life. “The intent with Joybug is to assist people in making better decisions, especially regarding exercise, nutrition and adhering to medical prescription and rehabilitative regimens,” he says. Joybug is available through participating businesses, mainly weight-loss centers, physical therapy practices and smoking-cessation programs (offered as an elective service to patients), but Rowe plans to offer it to the public soon. “People are hungry for optimism, passion, enthusiasm and love. Big kudos are in order for two Neapolitans, Glen Schwesinger and Gordon Kellam. The philanthropic-minded friends not only completed a grueling feat of mental and physical perseverance but also coordinated several fundraisers in town leading up to and following it—all with the goal of bringing more awareness to The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. Schwesinger, a trustee of the organization, came up with the idea for what became known as the Climb for The Shelter, and enlisted Kellam to be a part of the process every step of the way. The trek itself was a two-week round-trip to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak and the world’s tallest stand-alone mountain. While in Kenya, they visited a local women’s shelter before their ascent and recorded the journey through photos and video.

See page 60 for more on why our readers named Schwesinger a 2013 Super Man, and view the half-hour documentary of the kili experience on naplesillustrated.com.

Not-so-random act of kindness tinuing their quiet crusade in Collier County. The latest donation from the individuals who prefer to remain out of the public eye is a $6 million gift to St. Matthew’s House. The money was enough for the nonprofit to purchase and renovate a building on Airport Road to house a justopened thrift store and its gourmet catering operation. Proceeds from both go to supporting the 170 beds the group has across two shelters housing the area’s homeless population.

Portfolio performance is not a criterion because most advisors do not have audited track records. Barron’s Top 1,000 Advisors (2010-2013): The rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 of the nation’s most productive advisors. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Investment performance isn’t an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients’ risk tolerance than by an advisor’s investment-picking abilities. rom the beginning of his interactive luncheon, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s message was clear: “You think you know about sushi, but you don’t know anything,” he told his audience. and culture emphasize etiquette, and eating sushi— even in America—is not an exception. For example, nigiri must always be dipped in soy sauce fish-side down. “Fish-side down,” the chef reiterated to the crowd. Attendees watched as Morimoto, with deft fingers, produced piece after piece of beautifully geometric sushi rolls. Afterward, he escorted guests to the CIA’s NAPLESillustrated.com | SEPTEMBER 2013

kitchens to attempt the feat on their own, stopping between stations to offer advice and pose for photos. The luncheon was one of many anticipated events at Flavor! Napa Valley, Northern California’s annual food and wine festival benefiting programs and scholarships at the CIA at Greystone. Each year, the celebration delivers an impressive array of Napa Valley and CIA alumni celebrity chefs, restaurateurs, vintners, sommeliers and artisan food producers offering demonstrations, tastings, dinners, lunches and one-of-a-kind experiences. In 2012, food aficionados could observe the Forgione family chefs—father Larry and sons Bryan, Marc and Sean—cook a rib-eye steak to marbled perfection; listen to Chef Thomas Keller, who launched his remarkable career in Palm Beach, illustrate the importance of selecting fresh produce; discover Chef Christopher Kostow’s methods of harvesting and preserving vegetables; learn the art of making sushi alongside Morimoto; and witness an Iron Chef-style cooking competition between chefs Michael Chiarello and Geoffrey Zakarian. Other featured master chefs included Scott Conant, Johnny Iuzzini, Jeffrey Jake, Charlie Palmer and Cindy Pawlcyn. Each culinary demonstration concluded 42

with celebratory samplings or, in the case of Morimoto’s event, an astounding three-course meal with wine pairings. At tastings, oenophiles gleaned valuable knowledge from some of the industry’s finest, including Jon Bonné, wine editor at the San Francisco Chronicle; Kerrin Laz, wine director at Dean & DeLuca; Rajat Parr, wine director of the Mina Group; and Andrea Robinson, the only woman ever named Best Sommelier in the United States. From blind tasting competitions to wine and cheese presentations, experts indulged festivalgoers in their best wine secrets and tips. (Hint: When in doubt, choose sparkling wine.) The festival’s crown jewel, however, was the Appellation Trail, an exhilarating tasting trek featuring more than 100 wineries and 30 restaurants. Attendees explored Napa’s sub-appellations with a wineglass necklace, sampling everything from Albariño to Zinfandel. Demonstrations and tastings were housed in the castle-like Greystone Cellars building at the CIA, and the historic setting was more than fitting. Founded in 1889, it was the largest stone winery in the world, and today it operates as one of the most prestigious culinary

The only slight disappointment is the cabin. It’s gorgeous to look at, and I loved the simplicity of the dashboard layout with its two big dials and 8.4-inch touchscreen with simple Garminsourced navigation. But whereas the last generation Quattroporte was buttery soft, with slightly baggy leather and gorgeous detailing, this new version feels Teutonic—a little too cold and clinical for a Maserati. pling it with the latest ZF eight-speed rapid-fire automatic enhances the driving experience to a level of satisfaction equivalent to devouring a pint of pistachio gelato in one go. For the figure-hungry, acceleration from standstill to 60 mph takes a mere 4.2 seconds. Zero to 100 mph is covered in an equally rapido 10.5 seconds. The Maser won’t quit hurling itself towards the horizon until the speedo needle is kissing the 190-mph marker. Despite the car’s extra length, it’s considerably lighter than before—to the tune of almost 200 pounds. Much of that is because of the use of aluminum for most of its body parts, though the main chassis structure is fine Italian steel. On the road, these numbers add up to a beauty of a machine that drives as delectably as it looks. It’s a whopper of a car that somehow shrinks in size the harder you drive. Thankfully, the Maserati engineers resisted the temptation to follow the flock and switch to electric power steering and stuck with the more precise-feeling hydraulic setup. It shows in the laser-like way the car handles curves. And boy, is it quick. There’s an initial old-school hesitation

This Emmy Award-winning reporter on NBC2 became intrigued by travel and diversity at a young age, spending a month in a foreign country during summer breaks from high school. A volunteer gig at a radio station in his Georgia hometown, however, is what hooked him on broadcasting, and it’s been a rise to the top ever since. During the 2012 election season, he was the chief political correspondent for NBC2, and before that he covered events like NASA’s return flight after the Columbia disaster and Hurricane Wilma for the station. His innate curiosity and interest in learning have served him well, as lately we’ve enjoyed his “Good Question” segments. What philanthropy means: “To me, philanthropy means giving of yourself and not expecting anything in return. It means sacrifice that doesn’t involve the spotlight.” Why he loves Naples: “I could do what I do anywhere in the country— the world, really. I chose to live in Naples because of the quality of life. This lifestyle naturally attracts the best of the best. Different age groups, different professions—it doesn’t matter. I’m constantly meeting people at the top of their fields. I don’t know too many here who are really ‘retired.’ ” “Super” spots in Naples: “Naples Performing Arts Center—the hottest, most talented woman on the planet is the owner [his wife, Lori]. Roma’s Italian Restaurant on Fifth Avenue—ask to meet Ron, and go there hungry. Corey Billie’s Airboat Rides—it’s authentic, natural Florida at its finest. Toast Restaurant for the Bananas Foster French Toast—need I say more? The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club at sunset—it’s where I got engaged. I found out that if you show up around then for a proposal, people will clap for you.”

A Naples resident since 1989, Schwesinger is a bold adventurer who, at age 20, spent a year traveling solo around the world, visiting 15 different countries. Currently the vice president of investments at UBS Financial Services, he combined his commitment to The Shelter for Abused Women & Children (he serves on The Shelter’s board, is on The Shelter’s Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence Committee and helped launch its Next Generation Committee) with his daring nature by completing the successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. He and his friend and climbing companion, Gordon Kellam, met the challenge Schwesinger had set to raise awareness and money for The Shelter. Aside from the actual scaling of the mountain, the two hosted multiple events in Naples before and after their journey and created a documentary film of their trek (which can be seen on naplesillustrated.com). Motto: “Listen more, talk less.” Literary figure he’d want to meet: “Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye—but at the age he’d be now, so 80. I’d like to speak with him about how people and life have changed over the years.” Why he did the climb: “I was motivated by two very different reasons, one selfish and one selfless. The selfish reason was to challenge myself—to see the mountain, to experience that part of Africa, to push myself, to take off the suit and tie and push away from the desk, to see if I had gotten as soft as I felt, to be proud of myself. The second reason, and the reason I actually made myself do it, was to raise awareness for The Shelter. It was the voice in the back of my head like when you are on mile 20 of a marathon. It was the force that said, ‘do something for the greater good.’” Personal style in three words: “Jeans, T’s, flops.” Something he can’t live without: “Friendship with a martini chaser.”

rick vogelgesang Raised in the Midwest in a small house with seven siblings, Vogelgesang had daydreams as a child that he would open a door to an expansive room—a secret wing to his home that he hadn’t discovered yet. He made that dream for a space of his own a reality at age 23 by building himself a house (he persevered through five rejections before the sixth bank awarded him a loan). And the general contractor has been dreaming and building big each day since. He first ventured into business in Minnesota, growing a prosperous construction company, and then he moved his focus to Naples. His son Jordan, 13, was diagnosed with autism when he was three, and now Vogelgesang donates time and expertise to organizations that help children with special needs, including building the interiors of physical and occupational therapy centers. Words of wisdom: “After learning Jordan was autistic, I was disoriented, but I started digging. In the end, after all that searching, I found that love and patience are the ultimate answer.” Who he counts on most: “My gorgeous and talented wife, Kelli. I did not think a girl like her actually existed. She is the nucleus of our family and my dream girl. I met her and our now-seven-yearold daughter Mischa Marie in 2007, and both my son Jordan and myself have been complete ever since.” How he spends a free day: “What’s a free day? My free time is between 5 and 6 a.m. with a good cup of coffee.” Personal style in three words: “Comfortable, classic, easy.” On the horizon: “The continued expansion of my company, West Bay Homes, and soaking up every minute I can get with my beautiful wife and our two children. These are good times!”

From Buffalo, New York, to the Great White Way to Naples, the founding artistic director of TheatreZone and head of the drama program at the Community School of Naples is an accomplished musician, conductor and director. When he is not working on dramas, comedies and musicals with renowned theater veterans and TV stars, he flies in for his seasonal productions to wow us, and works with young people. “I feel its important to share your knowledge and expertise with the younger generation, which is why I work closely with hundreds of grade school, high school and college students, helping them to gain the experience, confidence and self-esteem needed to achieve success in their future careers,” he says. Motto: “Just put one foot in front of the other and keep on going.” Why he chose Naples: “Naples actually found ME a decade ago while I was on tour here. I was offered a wonderful opportunity to create a theater company and do what I love every day. I feel extremely fortunate for my wife and I to be able to raise our three children in such a beautiful city, which also appreciates and supports the arts!” “Super” spots in Naples: “I love hanging out at Brio and The Real McCaw. But you will often find us at Bokampers Sports Bar & Grill because they are open after our shows and rehearsals.” Littleknown fact: “I played high school football for four years, and my team won a championship game against [former NFL star] Daryl Johnson’s squad.”

Edwards is known on the national stage as the managing director–investments and senior PIM portfolio manager of Moran Edwards Asset Management of Wells Fargo Advisors. He is well respected and lauded, having been named one of the country’s top financial advisors by Barron’s for the past four years straight. But to our community, where he has lived since he was in elementary school, he is even better known for his altruistic streak. He has been involved in a long, long, long list of nonprofits for four decades—“or five,” he says, “if you count student council.” He’s deeply dedicated to the Naples Children & Education Foundation and its Naples Winter Wine Festival (for which he and his wife, Terry, served as co-chairs in January), and he is also a champion for the arts. Edwards serves on the board of Artis—Naples, is an honorary chair for The von Liebig Art Center and opens his home’s personal fine-art collection to organizations for fundraisers. His heroes: “My wife. She can survive anything, including me. Jackson Pollock, the first American to lead the art world. Warren Buffett, who is smart, effective, humorous and has common sense. Oscar Wilde, for sarcastic, caustic, spot-on wit. Jay and Patty Baker—nobody has more fun doing more good. Myra Daniels, who enriched Naples through the arts and taught me so much. Tom Moran, my business partner, for his tolerance of my rants.” Literary figure he’d want to meet: “Captain John Yossarian from Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. He would understand me.” Perfect day in town: “On the golf course, a spin through The Baker Museum and then spending time with my family and two Great Danes. (My wife told me to say that.)” On his iPod: “Rolling Stones, Sinatra, Bach and Pit Bull.” Why he loves Naples: “It’s my roots. No better group of people in the world. How’s that for pandering—but it’s true.”

The Cleveland native worked his way through college at Kent State University, where he met his wife of 25 years, Kathy. They fell in love with Naples in 1995, and knew it was where they wanted to build a business—a true family jewelry store, owned and operated by a family for families. Bigham quietly devotes time and resources to many charity events and directs the company’s charitable giving to many worthy organizations. Even though he shuns the spotlight for his good deeds, he has been honored by both Champions for Learning (Man of Distinction) and the YMCA (Coach of the Year), and his business was named the “Coolest Store in America” by a retail trade magazine. The free-standing building has more than 8,000 square feet of showrooms with Rolexes and exquisite gems, and he lets nonprofits use the meeting space free of charge. “Super” spots in Naples: “For me, it’s the water. Out on a boat or at the Pier are terrific places for relaxing and taking in what Naples is all about.” Personal style in three words: “Casual, casual, casual.” His heroes: “My parents. They taught me from an early age the three values that have shaped my life: perseverance, respect of others and kindness. Give kindness, and it will be given back to you.” What philanthropy means: “An opportunity to change someone’s life forever.” Achievement he is most proud of: “I have worked with Kathy to build our dream and to raise two children (now in their teens) to embrace the values we have taught.” Something he can’t live without: Dessert. It seems as if he already has the super power of being in two places at once. Roland, an executive chef and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, now has his own business, Crave Culinaire, a personal chef concierge service and event company. It has been a resounding success since its launch early this year, and he’s traveling to points all over Southwest Florida to cook for clients and cater large parties. To those who know him, it’s amazing he gets any sleep because he also makes giving back a top priority. He’s passionate about assisting dozens of local groups—from learning to tango for Literacy Volunteers of Collier County’s Dancing With the Stars fundraiser and emceeing events for Cancer Alliance of Naples and Humane Society Naples to battling other chefs in cooking competitions for St. Matthew’s House. What philanthropy means: “Raising awareness of all voids of life, in an effort to help those in need. Philanthropy is a way of life for me, a way I can truly make a difference. I try to give back in some way to every person who touches my life.” “Super” spots in Naples: “I love lunch at MASA, dinner at Osteria Tulia, drinks at Osetra. Bha! After hitting a rough patch in 2008, the grass keeps getting greener for local golf clubs. Elizabeth Kellar examines how they’re swinging big—and scoring high.

I

In Naples, golf is a way of life. In the recent past, however, that way of life has faced some challenges. As the economy struggled, many clubs and communities throughout Florida and the United States confronted financial hardships, and at the same time, statistics showed golf losing popularity—a potentially disastrous trend for Collier County, home to an estimated 90 public and private golf courses. For some Naples clubs, this meant it was time for innovation. For others, it was a call to refocus on the factors that had once brought them prosperity. But whatever the methods, local country clubs have shown their ability to rally, and they’ve been growing at an unexpected yet welcome pace, bucking the lingering national slump. Now, there’s no doubt that Southwest Florida country clubs have changed—and for the better.

Grey Oaks Country Club (this page and opposite) has seen its membership base diversify, thanks to several ongoing initiatives.

Not your father’s country club Traditional. Serious. Old-fashioned. Sharon and William Kiehl knew they didn’t want to belong to a club that was anything at all like that.

A dip in the game’s popularity a few years back proved to be the catalyst that sparked many Naples-area clubs to innovate, as well as refocus on the elements that spurred their creation.

Colorful landscapes surround Quail West’s signature hole. Opposite: Bay Colony’s course is slated for a major makeover. 74 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Two years ago, after renting at various communities around Naples, the couple fell in love with Grey Oaks, thanks to its central location and overall atmosphere. The Kiehls describe the staff and club members as easygoing and energetic, characteristics that fit their style. “We don’t feel old yet,” William says. “We’re still very active in life, and we wanted that in a community. We found that here.” Susan Mullican, a 12-year resident of Grey Oaks and chair emeritus of the Grey Oaks board, describes the community as being “young at mind.” In addition to the club’s 36 holes of golf, there are on-site educational and cultural opportunities, which she believes serve to entice a younger generation of club members. To date this year, the average age of the new Grey Oaks member is 55. “Our ability to attract younger members and keep that growing within the club speaks to our health and financial well-being,” Mullican says. Attracting and maintaining affluent younger members has been part of the key to the recent success at Quail West, too. The average age of the club’s newest 20 members is just 51, according to Jennie Taylor, Quail West membership director. Unlike the traditional snowbird member, these individuals may still be working, but are interested in enjoying some of the perks of a Florida country-club lifestyle now, rather than wait until they are in full retirement mode. Quail West has seen 60 new home contracts since the start of 2013, more than three times the total number of contracts in 2012. “They’re not here for a six-month basis, they’re here for a long weekend,” Taylor says of these younger residents. “They’re here when the kids are

Bay Colony’s course has had sufficient allure to keep membership at maximum capacity since 2004.

off from school, when they can get here, with a view to being here more in the future.” Recognizing that these younger members may have a more fluid schedule, Quail West works to provide them with the flexible services and offerings that meet their ever-evolving needs. Within Quail West, there’s an array of activities for all members, not just those who play golf, Taylor says. And if golf suddenly becomes an interest, it’s easy to help these members hit the links, notes Scott Smith, Quail West’s head golf professional. The aim is to keep it effortless, he explains. “One day, they’re signing their papers to become a member and the next day they can become involved,” Smith says. “We have that type of openness.”

Competitive on the course and beyond As country clubs strive to keep their leading edge, they are finding new ways to reinvigorate their most important assets. Bay Colony Golf Club is preparing to completely

refurbish its 20-year-old course, which was designed by golf architect Robert von Hagge. Slated to begin in April 2014, the renovation reflects a four-and-ahalf-year, long-range plan, an initiative that is made possible in part by the fact that club membership has remained at its 300-member maximum capacity since 2004. Rather than simply fix individual places of concern, club leadership believes that such an overhaul is the best way to continue to offer the highest level of golf experience and ensure lasting member satisfaction. “We’re staying ahead of the curve,” says Andy Zullo, director of golf for Bay Colony. “We’re doing this when a lot of people would say, ‘why do you need to do it?’ We’re doing it to maintain the best possible product in the marketplace. We’re not waiting for things to go bad.” At Tiburón Golf Club, the emphasis is on industry partnerships, and specifically on adding notable names to the club experience, explains Jim Magnusson, the club’s director of marketing and membership

sales. One of the newest amenities for club members is the TaylorMade Performance Lab, a custom club-fitting process once reserved for PGA and LPGA tour players; Tiburón’s is one of just 18 in the United States. The club also recently added PGA TOUR Academy golf education programs. The name of the club itself is a play on its course designer’s nickname—Greg Norman, a former top-ranked PGA golfer, is still called “The Shark” (tiburón means shark in Spanish) and each December he hosts the Franklin Templeton “Shark” Shootout, a tournament at Tiburón that attracts the game’s top pros. “People are always looking for added value,” Magnusson says. “That was kind of our strategy, to seek out partnerships to add value to the membership.” Few clubs have sought to reinvent themselves as thoroughly as Talis Park. Once owned by distressed homebuilder WCI Communities, Talis Park found new life after being purchased by Florida developer Syd Kitson in 2011. The community boasts a golf course designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman, two of the game’s greatest architects and one of only two courses jointly designed by them worldwide. A longtime high-rise resident in Naples, Jim Proctor, first played this course four years ago, and he distinctly remembers lingering on the tenth fairway. At the time, he reflected on the pleasantness of the experience. Then, in 2013, he decided to make Talis Park his new home, and he now lives on that tenth fairway. “I think the plans they have here going forward are very exciting,” Proctor says. Among those plans are multimillion-dollar improvements to the course, including drainage and beautification, as well as an expanded golf studio. The course also features a type of turf called Sea Dwarf Paspalum Grass; part of this turf’s appeal is that it can grow in water, which means the course’s water features will always have a lush, green edge, regardless of fluctuations in water level. Experts also consider the turf to be environmentally friendly and well suited to playing golf. In addition, Talis Park is adding several new community amenities. Phase One of Vyne House, the Talis Park clubhouse, is slated for completion later this year. Vyne House will include a fitness center, spa with hair and nail services and a combination restaurant and marketplace known as Fiona’s Market Café. The clubhouse represents what John Hillman, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Kitson & Partners,

describes as giving members a club experience that is relevant to their daily lives. “A lot of people look at luxury in today’s world and see maybe it’s not quite as ostentatious as it used to be,” Hillman says. “We talk about this casual elegance. We want to create a place that embodies that soulfulness. It’s okay to wear blue jeans to the club. It’s okay to come as you are.”

Remember that statistic about how golf was losing popularity? Well, it might be a bit misleading because times are changing. At the end of 2012, the number of rounds played in the United States increased 2.6 percent, boosting year-to-date gains above 6 percent. Meanwhile, women golfers represent one of the most rapidly growing segments of the sport, reports the National Golf Foundation, although nationally only about 19 percent of all golfers are women. At Grey Oaks, that percentage is significantly higher. About 48 percent of the club’s players are women, notes Leslye Dyke, Grey Oaks’ head golf professional. “Years ago, I remember the mentality was you did business on the golf course and entertained customers on the golf course, and it was mostly the males who did that,” Dyke says. “It’s changed so much. Females have so much influence now.” Throughout Grey Oaks’ history, women 78

have played a key role. The Grey Oaks Country Club was founded by Judy Sproul, and Sproul’s daughter, Katie, is the current president of Halstaff Partnership, Grey Oaks’ developer. Dyke believes many courses—especially older, more established courses—are often designed with little thought for women players. That has never been the case at Grey Oaks, where the needs of the women members are consistently at the forefront. Particularly with women players, it’s important to understand the role golf occupies in their lives. Grey Oaks has found that participation in its nine-hole ladies’ program far outpaces that of its 18-hole ladies’ program, as many women want to be able to have more time to enjoy other activities. Women are more likely to want to incorporate golf into a family outing and seek the help of the club staff to plan an event. Finally, Grey Oaks offers designated Ladies’ Days at the club and holds

the Grey Oaks Annual Ladies’ Invitational Golf Tournament. As the club looks forward to the future, there’s no doubt that women members will remain an essential part of its winning formula, says Jim Butler, the general manager of Grey Oaks Country Club. “We’re going to continue to do that; we’re going to continue to offer a diversity of locations for women to play,” he says.

Shooting for success The changes that clubs in Naples have made have put them on firm footing to cater to today’s audience—and to keep gaining ground. What just a few years ago was in danger of losing its relevance is now poised for longevity. In Southwest Florida, the game has proved to be more than a way of life for a select few. Golf means home, and it is here to stay. « NAPLESillustrated.com | SEPTEMBER 2013

ith wine, as in life, we tend to be creatures of habit. Most of us find something we like and stick to it—partly out of a need to create a comfort zone, partly out of fear of the unknown. There are more than 10,000 varieties of wine grapes, so it seems a bit silly to go through life drinking nothing but Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Remember the first time you decided to forgo a wellcrafted vanilla in favor of Cherry Garcia? The same sense of discovery and feeling of reward is waiting for you at the wine shop, with a little prodding and guidance. Here is our short list of favorites.

1. Newton Merlot, Napa, 2008 ($50)

6. Skouras Moscofilero, Peloponnese, 2010 ($15)

Even Miles from Sideways would like this one: The nose is beautifully nuanced, the texture is pure and ripe, and the wine is graced with good acidity, soft tannins and mouthwatering black fruits. Newton’s commitment to healthy and sustainable farming comes through loud and clear.

Burgundy-trained George Skouras has been one of the key figures in the renaissance of Greek wine over the past few decades. His Moscofilero is rich and generous, with notes of candied citrus in the mid palate giving way to hints of white pepper on the finish. This is a dream with fish and shellfish and a good match with white meats as well.

2. Georges Duboeuf Brouilly, Beaujolais, 2011 ($15) Remember real Beaujolais, the stuff we used to drink before Nouveau stole the market? The best wines come from the 10 crus, and Brouilly is known for being among the most full-bodied and complex. This bargain stand-in for Burgundy is sturdy and satisfying, with good acidity and a core of rich black fruit.

3. Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Rare, Champagne, 2002 ($160)

Founded in 1785, Piper-Heidsieck somehow became one of the forgotten Champagnes over the next few centuries. The Cuvée Rare is its hallmark bottling, produced only in the best vintages. The 2002 is a blend of 70 percent Chardonnay and 30 percent Pinot Noir, made in what winemaker Regis Camus calls “a chiseled style”; it is beautifully concentrated, with an intense palate imprint, pinpoint acidity and exotic flavors of citrus, kiwi and passion fruit.

4. Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano, Arnaldo Caprai, Umbria, 2005 ($60) Anyone who has visited Umbria knows the joys of Sagrantino di Montefalco. This one is full-bodied, rich and smoky with an assortment of peppery black fruits. Made by a family winery established in 1971, it matches perfectly with red meats, lamb and game dishes.

5. Marchesi Antinori Cervaro della Sala, Umbria, 2010 ($48) After 700 years and 26 generations, Antinori has learned a thing or two. On the surface, this wine seems to break all the rules; it is primarily composed of Chardonnay, a grape not native to the region, and made with skin contact, a controversial method for white wine in general. In the hands of winemaking guru Renzo Cotarella, however, it’s one of Italy’s most glorious whites: ripe and packed with green apple, citrus and vanilla, and capable of long-term aging.

82

7. San Pio, Mastrojanni, Tuscany, 2009 ($35)

2

Georges Duboeuf Brouilly subs for pricier Burgundy.

This entry-level red from Mastrojanni, a well-known Brunello producer, is a blend of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 percent Sangiovese Grosso. The wine spends 18 months in barrel and six months in bottle before release. The result is a rich and full wine, with good acidity and flavors of black raspberry and melting chocolate. Ripe and supple, it’s a pleasure to drink.

8. Bodega Diamandes Gran Reserva, Valle de Uco, 2007 ($38) Diamandes is owned by the Bonnie family, proprietors of Château Malartic-Lagraviere in Bordeaux. The wine is made by famed enologist Michel Rolland, and part of the production goes into Clos de Los Siete, while the rest is bottled under the Diamandes label. This 70/30 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon is crammed with sweet, old-vine fruit and overtones of raspberry jam—concentrated yet seamless and delicious to boot.

3

Piper-Heidsieck’s Cuvée Rare is a statement maker.

9. Steele Cabernet Franc, Lake County, 2009 ($17) Native to the Bordeaux region, Cabernet Franc forms part of the blend in the Médoc and the Right Bank; floral and vegetal, it adds complexity to reds in California as well, as it is sometimes bottled by itself in the Golden State. Vintner Jed Steele’s version is bright and juicy, with classic bell pepper aromas and rich flavors of cassis and dark berries.

10. Hirsch Grüner Veltliner No. 1, Austria, 2010 ($18) Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s most widely planted white wine variety. It gained a foothold in the United States around a decade ago when it began inundating wine lists in Las Vegas, of all places. This mainstay wine from Hirsch is bright and crisp, with flavors of lemon, lime and white pepper. Bring on the oysters!

At the Taylor Lane Vineyard, the vines grow on horizontal trellises. This creates a canopy that lets in the right amount of sunlight for maximum ripening, allows for proper air circulation and permits sheep to graze on low weeds.

Less familiar grapes handled with innovative and careful techniques yield satisfying wines that are a refreshing change of pace. At ch창teau Malartic-Lagraviere the wine is left to age in an air-conditioned cellar with controlled humidity levels.

16. Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé, Épernay ($45) 11. Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir, Taylor Lane, Sonoma, 2010 ($20) Better known for Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner family is producing a series of carefully crafted Pinot Noir from different regions. The 2010 Taylor Lane comes from highaltitude vineyards on the Sonoma Coast. Concentrated black cherry flavors mingle with earth notes on the palate, and the finish is assertive and memorable—an elegant and succulent wine to drink with game fish as well as white and red meats.

12. Terrazas de los Andes Torrontes Reserva, Lujan de Cuyo, 2010 ($15) Terrazas was established in 1960 by Moët et Chandon out of a belief that Argentina possessed the potential to make world-class wine. The operation is an international affair, headed by Hervé Birnie-Scott, a Frenchman from Sancerre who worked in California, Australia and New Zealand before immigrating to South America. This version of Torrontes, Argentina’s signature white wine grape, has bright acidity, flavors of tart green apple and fresh citrus, and a long finish with echoes of grapefruit and orange zest.

13. Numanthia, Toro, 2008 ($55) It’s no exaggeration to say Numanthia is the wine that made the Toro region of Spain famous. Made from ancient, low-yielding Tinta de Toro vines, the 2008 is plump yet graceful, filled with flavors of blackberry, cassis and fresh herbs—remarkably supple and drinkable for such a large-scaled wine, with food matchups ranging from fish to red meats.

14. Château D’Esclans Whispering Angel, Côtes de Provence, 2011 ($20) After years of decline in America, dry rosé is back. Whispering Angel is the entry-level wine from Sacha Lichine’s Château D’Esclans, and it’s a beauty—structured and elegant with flavors of red berries. As for food pairings, remember the advice of Julia Child: Rosé goes with everything.

15. Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho, Melgaço, 2010 ($25) Perched near the Spanish border in the region of Melgaço, Soalheiro destroys the myth that all Vinho Verde is light, crisp and inoffensive. The nose exhibits hints of lime blossom and tropical fruit.

For many years, an affordable rosé Champagne was the impossible dream; then Nicolas Feuillatte, France’s bestselling Champagne house, came to the rescue. Made primarily from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the wine is solid and well proportioned. Luscious flavors of strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb coat the palate and linger on the mouthwatering finish.

17. Nivole, Michele Chiarlo, Piedmont, 2011 ($15, 375 ml) This sparkling Moscato d’Asti is semisweet, low in alcohol and high in acidity, with an enticing nose and a plethora of ripe fruit flavors. Generally served as a dessert wine, it can also double as an aperitivo according to your taste. This is a sexy Tom Jones kind of wine, to be sure— although you can get a considerable amount of pleasure by pairing it with a fruit tart.

11

Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir, earthy yet elegant.

18. Foppiano Estate Petite Sirah, Russian River Valley, 2009 ($17) There’s no connection between this grape and Syrah— Petite Sirah is closely related to a variety called Durif in southern France and has flourished in the California climate. Foppiano Vineyards, a family operation founded in 1896, has made a specialty of it. Moderate use of new oak and gentle cellar practices combine to bring out the sturdy black fruit and pepper accents of this full-bodied wine.

19. Carneros Pinot Meunier, Domaine Chandon, Napa, 2011 ($35)

12

Terrazas de los Andes Torrontes Reserva, packed with crisp notes.

Any wine geek can tell you Pinot Meunier is one of the three varieties in the classic Champagne blend, but it’s unusual to find it vinified by itself without bubbles. The Chandon version displays earthy flavors of dark berries, anise and minerals, with a vivid contrast between its intense flavors and smooth texture. Crafted by winemaker Joel Burt, it is a distinctive and charming bottle.

20. Alois Lageder Pinot Bianco, Alto Adige, 2010 ($16) We all know about Pinot Grigio, but who has tasted the joys of Pinot Bianco? Discover them in Lageder, a biodynamic and sustainable winery founded in 1823. This version has an enticing floral nose with hints of almonds; the wine is medium-bodied and crisp, with fleshy flavors of citrus and peaches. It is equally at home with cheeses and cold meats, fish and shellfish. «

13

Numanthia is remarkably supple and foodfriendly.

TRENDING NOW

On Location

By Dorothea Hunter Sönne

The Local brings the farm-to-table movement to Naples with a winning (and Collier-based) recipe. Every now and again, a new concept appears in the restaurant world, one which is both good for us and has long-term staying power. Like sushi and small plates before it (our waistlines, hearts and worldliness are still in a state of gratitude), the current craze sweeping through dining scenes both small and large, near and far, is the locavore movement. You know it’s a bona fide trend when the game’s biggest players are rushing to open restaurants on the theme—New York’s Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ABC Kitchen is thriving, Tom Colicchio introduced Riverpark and its compan

ion farm not too long ago and Laurent Tourondel’s debuted his latest, BLT Market—all of which source and serve nearly their entire menus from vendors within a short driving radius. In Naples, we are lucky to now have our own place to call home that touts home-sourced products. Opened in the spring, The Local hits the nail on the produce crate’s head with its leafy green salads, herb-flecked hand-rolled pastas and simple yet expertly grilled fish caught in our own backyard. It’s the first independent venture for entrepreneur Jeff Mitchell, NAPLESillustrated.com | SEPTEMBER 2013

In terms of what’s made it to our table, we’ve relished the Caesar with “Lo-Cal” dressing (yes, their version is lower in calories) and the salad of organic lettuces and heirloom tomatoes. TIP Sheet: Even in the off-season, Handsome Harry’s Third Street Bistro (handsomeharrys.com) is a dependable spot for late-night drinks and live music on its sprawling outdoor patio (7 to 11, Thursday to Saturday), but before springing for a martini, consider its extensive wine list. Shop Fresh Beat the heat—and get fresh produce and local artisanal products—at the Shoppes at Vanderbilt’s indoor farmer’s market. The two-year-old, 52-week-peryear festive fair normally blankets the parking lot each Saturday, but organizers have made some exciting changes. Through October, it has shifted to occupying an enormous retail space near the perennial breakfast favorite Toast (read: fully air-conditioned), and, most significantly, it added Friday hours and an Art Walk Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. Starting the weekend with good food, good art and sweat-free strolling? We’ll go for a bite of that. And assuming others will too, after October, the organizers are hop-

w

ing to keep hosting a Friday fair under air and have the regular Saturday market outside. (2355 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Unit 190, 239-273-2350)

This month, get to know the award-winning chef and restaurateur behind Third Street South’s popular Sea Salt and Barbatella, Fabrizio Aielli—what foods he loves, where he stocks his pantry and what he does with his time off. By Alicia Hauser Where do you go out to eat in town? Because of the business I’m in, it’s pretty long hours every day. When I have a day off, I don’t want to go to a restaurant, because when you go, you see people. Whether it’s a customer or somebody in the same line of work, you’re going to end up talking about business. The one thing I love to do when it’s my day off is to go to a friend’s house—almost every single Sunday I go to a friend’s house, and she cooks for me. What else do you do for fun? I spend time with my wife and friends. I love almost anything with an engine— cars, boats, but the thing I do most for fun, really, is cook. Where is your favorite place to buy groceries? For my house, 90 percent is from Food & Thought. My wife is there almost every single day for lunch. It is a superb place; when we opened Sea Salt, I learned a lot regarding the organic world from Frank Oakes [Food & Thought’s founder]. We have a farmer now who grows a lot of organic vegetables for us. He started it out of passion, and he does hydroponic growing—that way he can control the nutrients, and he does a wonderful job. So most of the vegetables at Sea Salt are organic? Whatever is possible for us to get, yes.

Sea Salt Chef Fabrizio Aielli is a master at marrying organic local produce, wild-caught fish, naturally raised meat and poultry with modern cooking techniques in astounding dishes that are almost too beautiful to eat. 1186 Third St. S., Naples (239-4347258, seasaltnaples.com) Swan River Seafood & Fish Market Restaurant, market and raw bar, Swan River is consistently great for fine seafood. 3741 Tamiami Trail N., Naples (239-403-7000, swanriverseafood.com) Truluck’s Seafood, Steak & Crab House The atmosphere is elegant in this fine dining restaurant. Truluck’s owns its own local fisheries, so the catch is always fresh. The bar is sophisticated and festive, with piano music and a lively crowd. 698 Fourth Ave. S., Naples (239-530-3131, trulucks.com) The Turtle Club Fresh seafood, fine steaks and chops are nearly overshadowed by the spectacular beachfront setting overlooking the Gulf. 9225 Gulfshore Drive N., Naples (239-592-6557, windward hospitality.com) USS Nemo Undersea Cuisine & Adventures Everything on the menu is a cut above, but the signature miso broiled sea bass is hands down one of the best dishes in town. USS Nemo is also the seat of the power lunch scene. 3745 Tamiami Trail N., Naples (239-261-6366, ussnemorestaurant.com) Yabba Island Grill A fun place for visitors and locals, Yabba is like a Caribbean vacation, with neon-colored cocktails, bright decor and late night music on Fridays and Saturdays. 711 Fifth Ave. S., Naples (239-262-5787, yabbaislandgrill.com)

Château Roubine (left) and Château d’Esclans (right) have earned a following in America. From the Rhône region, Michel Chapoutier’s Marius (center) retails for around $12.

The wines of the South of France are very much like the region itself—elegant, generous and delightful, filled with sunlight and conjuring up images of life as it should be lived. The area is best known for dry rosé, which was extremely popular in America before the White Zinfandel epidemic swept the land. The popularity of the original pink-hued vin has been on the rise again in recent years—and fortunately so. The wines are crisp and bright, touched by the faintest suggestions of tannin and red fruits. The best-known versions come from Côtes de Provence, Les Baux de Provence and Bandol. For a friendly introduction, try Whispering Angel ($20) from Château d’Esclans, which is owned by Sacha Lichine, son of the late Alexis Lichine, who was partly responsible for introducing French wine to the United States. When it comes to food matchups for these rosy-toned wines, remember the advice of Julia Child: “Rosé goes with everything.” Along with Bordeaux, Provence is unique among French wine regions with a classification of wine estates as opposed to vineyard areas. Fourteen properties were deemed crus classés (or classed growths) in 1955, and the indication on the label is a guarantee of quality. The most commonly available in the States are Château du Galoupet and Château Roubine. The most common red grape is Mourvèdre (also popular in the nearby Rhône Valley), although Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are being more widely planted. Popular white grapes in Provence include Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Ugni Blanc. Whether white or red, Provençal wine has a different aroma and flavor profile than the wines Americans usually drink. Many who have spent time in the region insist they pick up scents of rosemary, thyme, lavender and other wild herbs native there. The reds tend to be distinctly earthy on the nose, although fruit emerges easily on the palate, while the whites are generally devoid of barrel aging, which makes their herbal characteristics more pronounced. Either way, it’s best to judge them on their own terms rather than compare them with California Chardonnay or Cabernet. Keep in

mind that these wines are designed to go with food; the whites are a dream with shellfish, while the reds match well with wild game and red meats. To the west of Provence lies the Languedoc-Roussillon, the largest wine-producing region in the world. Historically, this area has been more associated with mass production than quality—particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, when vintners focused on turning out “fighting varietals” designed to compete with inexpensive wines on American supermarket shelves. To a certain extent, this is still true: Look closely at a low-priced bottle of “California” Pinot Noir, and often you’ll find the wine comes from this French region. In recent years, however, quality has been on the rise in the Languedoc-Roussillon as a new generation of young winemakers focuses on cultivating the area’s natural strengths. The best-known appellations are Coteaux du Languedoc, Corbières, Faugères, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and Côtes du Roussillon-Villages. A good introduction to the new wines of this area is Marius, made by powerhouse Rhône winemaker Michel Chapoutier. It’s available in red, white and rosé versions and retails for $12. In the $20 range, check out the wines of Gerard Bertrand, Hecht & Bannier, Château Léoube and Château de Jau. Any of these options will provide a supple and fragrant match to grilled dishes and are as easy on the palate as they are on the pocketbook. We call that living well. «

Aging with Grace & Power

As Moorings Park opens the doors to its new Center for Healthy Living, the whole Southwest Florida population stands to benefit.

By Dorothea Hunter Sönne The entrance to Moorings Park on Goodlette-Frank Road just south of Pine Ridge Road has all the hallmarks of an upscale residential development—pretty landscaping, prominent signage and a large guard house. What you wouldn’t know from a passing glance is that it is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), and one of the country’s leading ones at that. But don’t let anyone hear you say it. Even those deeply involved with the nonprofit, Medicare-certified, 83-acre community recoil upon hearing the term. “CCRC often comes off like a dirty word,” says John Little, M.D., board chair and former Mayo Clinic physician. “I blanch at it. I’m a baby boomer. I hear it and think, ‘Oh, that’s scary.’” Moorings Park is indeed a place where residents are in their golden years, but it has risen above the 3,000-plus other developments like it nationwide because of its forward-thinking programs, on-trend and luxurious facilities (this is Naples, after all), and the staff members’ genuine concern for the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of the 700 people living there. The vast majority of them are very active and live independently in condos like others you’d find at any local gated community. Just under 200 people are in assisted living and skilled nursing arrangements. In case you were wondering, the criterion for reaching that point is when you need help doing three or more basic daily activities, such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, getting dressed, etcetera. The main differences, however, between Moorings Park and other developments like it are in the amenities and the extensive staff (or, to use their own epithet, “partners in caring”). The latest facility to debut, the Center for Healthy Living, embodies both. Nearly five years in the making, it came about as a result of annual research conducted with Moorings Park residents. Study after study showed people wanted more wellness options. In 2009, the preexisting Michael A. Petti Center for fitness quadrupled in size (and still remains open), and in 2010, all asphalt pathways on the grounds were replaced with joint-friendly rubberized material to encourage walking. Yet still people craved more.

“We are always looking for areas where we can have the most impact,” says Daniel Lavender, president and CEO of Moorings Park. “We are very serious about having people stay young and active, and physically fit and functional, for as long as possible. We see it as our responsibility—we’ve developed a reputation for that.” The new structure does not disappoint. Created by the Wegman Design Group and occupying the third floor of a new building on the west side of campus, the 37,000-square-foot center’s formula was based on overall wellness with a focus on injuryand illness-prevention. Dr. F. Michael Gloth, a geriatrician and former Johns Hopkins University professor, is there all day, every day and serves as the personal physician for each resident. The facility also has a clinic and outpatient rehab facility—plus the latest high-tech machinery that can be used for diagnostic tests, like bone-density exams. Also high-tech are the latest Keiser workout machines. Aside from being specifically designed for an aging population with attention to flexibility and range of motion, they store workout data from session to session to easily measure progress (how

The facility aims to change the face of wellness by merging elements of a traditional gym with professional health care for a total lifestyle approach. Directors hope to soon open memberships to the general public.

much weight was lifted, the number of repetitions, what exercises were done). To boot there’s a huge group fitness room that has recumbent spin bikes, which put less stress on the lower back, and it’s impossible to miss the Alter G antigravity treadmill, which looks like it belongs on a spaceship. It’s one of only two in Southwest Florida. (The other is at Florida Gulf Coast University.) Once you’re zipped into place, a giant air bubble fills up around your lower body and removes 15 to 85 percent of your body weight, so no one can come up with a good excuse to avoid running. Top all of that off with an auditorium with state-of-theart acoustics and monthly guest speakers like an osteoporosis expert from Columbia University, two outdoor Zen gardens, a healthy-eats café, Max-Wellness store, five licensed personal trainers for hire and a full-service spa with four treatments rooms. The next stage is letting new people in. Moorings Park plans to offer memberships for the Center for Healthy Living to the public (and buying one would ultimately give people priority if they were to decide to permanently move into Moorings Park). As of the summer, there were already 200 names on the waiting list for these yearly memberships. Moorings Park has been in such high demand (its population almost doubled over the past decade, and new buildings have sprouted up like weeds) that just as the board of directors announced the opening of the Center for Healthy Living, they announced a new project as well—they’re developing an adjunct campus, Moorings Park at Grey Oaks. It will be another CCRC

with independent, assisted and skilled-nursing living arrangements. But remember: Don’t call it that! “I’ve traveled extensively and visited CCRCs, and there’s nothing like this in the country in terms of the scope of services and the quality of life, quality of the buildings and quality of the programs offered,” says Alan Korest, a board member and octogenarian. “I got involved because I was intrigued by the concept— how you could live your later years productively and healthily. It had such potential. It’s a very special community.” « NAPLESillustrated.com | september 2013

If you crave something low-key … Try stand-up paddle boarding. Surprisingly simple for beginners and a great workout for the entire body (especially your core), the sport keeps growing in popularity. The boards are wide so you can stay balanced, and falling into the water is a welcome treat. The Old Naples Surf Shop (oldnaplessurfshop.com) offers clinics for novices, private lessons and rentals. And if you care to kick it up a notch, the Wellfit Institute (wellfitinstitute.com) runs yoga classes where participants are on paddle boards in the Gulf off the Naples Beach shore.

If you crave extreme thrills … The 60-acre lake at Sugden Regional Park (colliergov.net) is normally a tranquil spot for paddle boating, sailing or kayaking, but it’s also the place in Naples where you can learn to waterski. Users can check off ingredients, bookmark favorite recipes and search by keyword. For a greater jumpstart, combine the app with its online companion program. —Mary Gibble

this park is that there are no boats in the lake. A network of overhead cables pull people around, and there’s a full obstacle course that can be raised out of the water for advanced extreme sportists to attempt jumps, flips and more.

If you crave high intensity … Ironmen athletes-in-training can get their fix September 22 at the Paradise Coast International Triathlon (eliteevents.org). The first leg of the race (which attracts participants from all over the country), is a 1,500-meter swim around the perimeter of the lake in Sugden Regional Park followed by a 10K run and a 40K bike ride.

Members of the Naples Art Association will strut their best stuff in the Sixth Annual Non-Juried All Artist Members Show of Shows Exhibition September 9 through November 9 at The von Liebig Art Center. The yearly display offers a chance for artists of all skill levels to share their creations with the public, featuring pieces like the work shown here by Veronica Benning, Dracena Bouquet, IV. “Painting is the beauty of one spot of color with another. I go to a place where patterns cross physical boundaries and where two-dimensional vision reveals directions,” she says in her artist’s statement. For more information, see naplesart.org.

Rare Birds: J.N. “Ding” Darling Surprisingly, no Southwest Florida gallery or museum has a permanent collection of works by Pulitzer Prize-winning early twentieth-century cartoonist, artist and part-time Captiva Island resident J.N. “Ding” Darling. The pioneering wildlife conservationist (for whom the National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is named) was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as director of the U.S. Biological Survey, the forerunner of the Fish & Wildlife Service. Darling started the Federal Duck Stamp Program, designing the first Duck Stamp, along with many other conservation initiatives. On September 26, we will have an opportunity to see some 15 “Ding” Darling works along with the artist’s tools and personal items in an evening hosted WGCU Public Media at the Gallery on Fifth at Mercato titled “The Hidden Works of J.N. Ding Darling.” WGCU presents this special showing in conjunction with the release of a TV documentary: America’s Darling: The Story of J.N. Ding Darling. Additionally, Darling’s family has provided a limited-edition print of his work Fishermen I Have Met: The Old Sanibel Slip for the event. Copies will be available for $125 to anyone who has paid the $50 entry fee to the one-night exhibit; proceeds benefit WGCU Public Media. As an added bonus, guests also will have the opportunity to explore the gallery, which is the only Russian art gallery and Russian/American Cultural Center in Naples. CMYK Giving BACK Ron McGinty

Creating Safe Havens With so many kids in Collier County unable to care for themselves, Ron McGinty feels compelled to reach out to as many of them as possible. His passion is fueled by personal experience and family ties—his two youngest brothers became his wards as they struggled with mental illness and addiction, and both passed away in their 50s. McGinty considers his life’s journey “a gift from above,” because it made him a strong advocate for those in need. He spends much of his time involved with Youth Haven, an emergency shelter for abused, neglected or abandoned children. He is also a Guardian ad Litem, representing the interests of young people involved in litigation. “Children are God’s creation, but they can’t help themselves,” says McGinty, founder and retired director of Matrix Resources Inc., an information technology staffing company. “They don’t have the ability or the resources. If we don’t help these kids, they will end up in very bad places.” McGinty serves as director of development for Youth Haven. The organization provides a temporary home for children removed from the care of their parents or guardians by the court system. The average stay for residents is 70 days; about 45 percent return to Youth Haven at some point, and 50 percent of the girls have been sexually abused. “There are no easy answers,” McGinty says. “The Children’s Network of Southwest Florida gives us $100 a day toward each child’s care, but the actual cost is $160. Our fundraising must make up the difference.” McGinty’s current mission is generating funds for the establishment of Haven House on the 25-acre Youth Haven campus, which will offer refuge to Collier County’s approximately 1,000 homeless children. A significant portion of these kids are with their parents, but according to the sheriff’s office, 200 children live on the streets by themselves. The goal is to open the door of Haven House by the end of this year. McGinty is fully engaged in the project. “I only have one way to work and that’s all in,” says McGinty, who spends two hours a day on social media outreach seeking support for the program. “I hope to build awareness about the needs of these children and get people involved,” he says. “If just one child ends up becoming successful and builds a loving family, then we have done our job. My dream is to touch that one person.” «
