From the Editor

TAKING THE PLUNGE VANESSA ROGERS / HAIR & MAKEUP: PHILIP DOUGLAS

There’s something about the change of seasons, the marking of time, that seems to step up our sense of urgency. We can almost hear the tick-tock reminder to get up and get moving. Maybe it’s time to revisit that bucket list or finally take a deep dive into a passion project. This issue marks the sixth year of honoring our own version of local “super” heroes. Our “Super Men” feature places a spotlight on a handful of men who inspire us—whether it be for their creativity, bravery, philanthropy, compassion, sense of adventure, or a combination thereof. They are all standouts in our community; they don’t hesitate to jump in with both feet when called on to serve in their own unique ways. This year, we added a fun new dimension to the “Super Men” photo shoot: We brought in adoptable dogs from Humane Society Naples to be photographed with the men. Starting on page 54, not only will you get to know our Super Men, you also will meet lovable pooches hoping to find their fur-ever home. I dare you not to fall heart first for those charmers. A special thanks goes to everyone at Humane Society Naples, who brought the mobile unit and special trainer Bekah Coffing to help guide and care for the animals in the shoot. At press time, Patty the Chihuahua, whose pensive expression graces our cover and the inside feature, was still waiting for a new family. Booker, an 8-year-old hound mix, still needed a home as well. Will it be yours?

Insider NI: You stopped doing stand-up comedy for a while—why? Wayans: Every night, I’d do a set but realized I didn’t want to do the same thing over and over, so I started writing movies and TV shows. It wasn’t until I was up to play Richard Pryor that I started doing it again. I thought, “If I’m going to play the greatest comedian ever, I gotta get my ass back on stage.” That’s when I fell in love with it again. What inspired your new sitcom, Marlon? I’ve always wanted to do a family show, and it’s a chance to talk about myself and my situation. I feel that I have a different kind of story, one that shows even if you’re divorced, you still have children and have to put love first and keep that family connected. I can’t wait to show the audience that at the end of the day, it’s all about life and love. How did you hear of Off the Hook Comedy Club? An agent brought the idea to me and I was happy to do it since I’ve never been to Southwest Florida before. I figured, “Hey, it’s not Miami!”

Q&A MARLON WAYANS

For Marlon Wayans, comedy runs in the family. The comedian, actor, and screenwriter grew up in New York as the youngest of 10 children—many of whom are celebrities in their own right. Known for his hilarity in widely popular movies and parodies such as Scary Movie, White Chicks, and Fifty Shades of Black, Wayans also often writes and produces his own work alongside his siblings. His latest movie, Naked, about a man who gets stuck reliving the same hours before his wedding over and over again, was released in August on Netflix; his new TV sitcom, Marlon, loosely based on his own life, premiered on NBC in August as well. As part of a new stand-up tour, Wayans will appear at the Off the Hook Comedy Club (offthehookcomedy.com) September 14-16. — Anna Bjorlin

FIF TESY OF SAKS PHOTOS COUR

FASHION

September is here, and that means it’s time to reinvent your wardrobe. NI

recently spoke with Saks Fifth Avenue Senior Vice President, Fashion Director Roopal Patel about the colors, styles, and pieces everyone will be rocking this fall. (saksfifthavenue.com) —Mary Murray NI: What major trends for women do you expect to see this season? Patel: We’re really excited about the movement [toward] empowering women. Designers were affected by what’s happening in the world today and are dressing women in what we’re calling “New Power Suiting.” The return of the suit feels fresh and directional. It’s not just your classic suit of boardroom stripes or black; there’s a lot of novelty, whether it’s brocade, printed florals, crystal, diamanté. We also love the return of the jacket. A statement jacket can really bring out your personality. It’s also a decadent and opulent season, so you’ll see incredible texture with velvet, sequin, feathers. Some of our favorite shows of the season had this maximalist approach, like Gucci, Prada, and Saint Laurent to name a few. What trends are losing speed? There’s a little less fringe. Feathers are the new fringe. If you’re deciding between a fringe jacket or that featherembellished top, I’d probably go with the [latter]. What colors will be most popular? We saw designers experimenting with bold and graphic color. The one combination we love the most is a pink dress with a great red shoe. We love a pink and red combination. It feels unique. What about shoe styles? It is a boot season, and the most cov-

26

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

eted [style] is a Saint Laurent crystal boot. It’s this idea of twinkle toes, of really bling shoes done in a cool, modern way that isn’t just for evening. It’s also all about a white statement boot or a red boot. Slouchy boots with ‘70s glamour are trending. We saw some great slouchy boots at Saint Laurent, as well as at Isabel Marant and Gianvito Rossi. Combat boots, booties, velvet booties—there’s a boot wardrobe every woman is going to embrace. And handbags? When we think of power dressing, you’ve got the power suit but we’re also seeing a power bag, which is more structured. It has a top handle, and it's not so oversized that it feels like a work bag. Also, with all of the white boots, we do love a matching white bag. It complements a lot of colors and adds a little bit of wow. What are your go-to timeless looks and pieces you like to rock on a daily basis? I love having a new interpretation of a stripe. Is it a striped dress? A striped skirt? Being able to mix stripes with solids or even clashing it with another print is always great. And I love cargos— cargo coats, cargo jackets. It’s like my version of a denim jacket.

Fall 2017 will be all about feathers and power dressing, predicts Patel. Put a posh spin on both trends with these flashy red feather pumps by Prada (above) and a cool blue suit from Haider Ackermann.

Finish your look with a structured power bag, such as this bold carryall from Gucci.

&

A statement jacket, like this graphic design by Dior, can elevate any ensemble and capture your personality.

Belle de Jour

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the movie Belle de Jour, in which Catherine Deneuve wore Roger Vivier’s “pilgrim” buckle heels. The film—and the shoes—became an instant global success. In honor of this slice of fashion history, creative director Bruno Frisoni designed a new pump with an oversized square buckle and chunky podium heel inspired by the design from the ’60s. Both the patent leather day version ($1,050) and the blinged-out velvet evening edition ($1,395) offer modern takes on the original’s elegant simplicity. Turn the page for more fall fashion. Timeless Elegance WHO: ADAM LIPPES, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF FASHION BRAND ADAM LIPPES SPECIALIZES IN: DESIGNER SPORTSWEAR LEGENDARY MENTOR: LAUNCHED HIS OWN LINE AFTER WORKING UNDER FASHION ICON OSCAR DE LA RENTA AS THE COMPANY’S GLOBAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR EYE FOR DESIGN: OFTEN FINDS INSPIRATION THROUGH INTERIOR DESIGN, INCLUDING FURNITURE, FABRIC, AND PATTERNS

Our job as fashion designers is to make women happy–a foundation I keep with me every day.”

What was the aha moment that made you decide to become a designer? Growing up in Buffalo and wanting to be a fashion designer was like saying you wanted to be a movie star. It wasn’t until I was in college, during a year abroad in Paris and really seeing the world, that I realized it was something I could do. Then I came back to New York for a coveted banking internship, realized that could not be my life, and decided to go for it. What is your connection to Naples? My father lives in town with his wife, Jody, and they’re big supporters. Jody secured my first private trunk show in Naples. Marissa Collections decided to carry the line this fall, so I’ll definitely be back soon for another trunk show. What sets your brand apart? We’re not trying to be the trendiest designer on the block. We’re really focused on creating luxury American sportswear a woman can go out in again and again, pieces she can mix into her wardrobe to keep and wear for ages. How did your experience at Oscar de la Renta influence your own line? Having not gone to fashion school, my apprenticeship was like going through the University of de la Renta. Oscar taught me everything, about quality of fabric, construction, fit, and how our job as fashion designers is to make women happy—a foundation I keep with me every day. What was the inspiration behind this fall’s collection? I was in India for a few weeks and met this incredible printmaker, who did some fine floral paintings with an overlay of gold and little gold flowers. We worked on patterns together, and I really developed the foundation for the collection there.

Designer Renée Gaddis was ahead of the trend with the design of this powder room in a private estate in Mediterra. To form the vanity feature wall, Gaddis book-matched two slabs of Illusion Blue quartzite with veining so intricate it resembles petrified wood. For visual continuity, the same material was used on the floating vanity countertop. RENOVATION STYLE

OPEN TO POSSIBILITIES

BEFORE

Jenny Provost loves a challenge. While walking through a condo renovation project at Trieste at Bay Colony, the president and principal designer of K2 Design Group (k2design.net) noted the clients’ disappointment with the peninsula kitchen, which felt dark and enclosed. “They said it was too bad they couldn’t have an island,” Provost says. “They had been told by others it was impossible.” True, it wasn’t easy, but she was determined to figure out how it could be done. It took nothing short of an engineering feat to redirect plumbing and supplies from the perimeter wall to the center of the kitchen, but Provost made it work, giving the clients their island in the process. “Once the space was fully open to the family room, everything changed,” she says. As part of one contiguous space, the kitchen had to look the part. Provost chose custom grain-filled white oak with low sheen for the cabinetry. Lighter and more sophisticated, the finish recalls the sands of the nearby Gulf and blends seamlessly with the millwork of the family room. The counters (“an absolute must-have at first sight,” she says) mimic the colors and movement of the Gulf, and the glazed tiles on the backsplash, known as “skinny bricks,” reinforce the water-hued palette. The result is a fresh, sleek space with plenty of possibilities for entertaining and family gatherings. And they said it couldn’t be done. « 44 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Veer off the river cruise mainstay and sail through emerging regions of Eastern Europe on the Scenic Black Sea Explorer By paul rubio

Escape

The 1,785-mile-long Danube River commences in Germany’s Black Forest and flows through 10 countries—more than any other river on Earth—before emptying into the Black Sea by way of Romania. Its upper reaches, long hailed as one of the most photogenic and popular routes on the river cruise circuit, pass through the best of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, where bucolic towns and medieval castles enchant at every turn. Beyond northern Hungary, however, the undeveloped and unpolished Lower Danube lacked the touristic value of its upper sibling, branding Budapest—and all its Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival riverside grandeur—the ideal Danube terminus. Cruise over. Roll credits. But due to a growing interest in authentic experiences off the beaten path as well as ease in accessing Eastern Europe’s once PAUL RUBIO

forbidden lands, luxury travelers began demanding a Danube sequel. And now they’re finally getting it. Introducing the Scenic Black Sea Explorer, an 11-day voyage by Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours from Budapest, Hungary, down to Bucharest, Romania, and vice versa—with three land-based overnights in the aforementioned capital cities and a seven-day cruise on the Scenic Jade to lesser-known Danube port cities in eastern Croatia (Osijek), Serbia (Belgrade), Romania (Giurgiu), and Bulgaria (Silistra and Russe). The Scenic Jade, the cruise line’s premier five-star ship, hosts 169 passengers, max. Through a handful of annual departures in October, April, May, and June, Scenic paves the way for maximum Lower Danube pursuits in just one week, all done in high style. Thanks to a comprehensive pricing structure that includes all shore excursions, transfers, WiFi, gratuities, alcohol, and meals, passengers are unrestricted when it comes to choosing their Scenic adventure. During the port day in Belgrade, for example, four excursions are offered, including a city tour with local guides, a cycling trip along quiet river paths, and a morning of tasting

and shopping in the street markets with the cruise culinary team. An endless glass of Champagne waits upon return, as does an impressive lunch spread featuring locally influenced dishes such as Serbian burek, the national version of the Balkan phyllo dough creation, filled with cheese or minced meat. Come afternoon, the cruise team whisks you to the sixth-century Belgrade Fortress for a private cocktail ceremony and sunset viewing in a magical, historysteeped setting, after which you’ll return on board for a gourmet, multicourse, wine-paired dinner. It’s up to you to decide how much or little to partake in; sunbathing, sleeping, and room service are always options. One spectacle not to miss, however, is the actual passage from Serbia to Romania through the Iron Gates gorge, which takes place mid-sailing. Wake up by 7 a.m. and edge over to your private balcony (every room has one) or head up to the expansive, ship-long top deck for panoramic views. The morning begins with the Lower Danube’s most inspiring scenery: tree-lined, limestone cliffs defining Serbia’s Carpathian Mountains on the right bank, medieval castles punctuating Romania’s Balkan Mountains on the left. Prior to the border crossing, arrive at the 140-foot rock sculpture of Decebalus, the final king of Dacia (modern-day Romania) before losing

to Roman rule in the second century. Finally, over several hours, squeeze through the series of navigation locks that comprise the Iron Gates before landing on the next frontier: Bulgaria and Romania. To be sure, this river route less traveled exposes the good, the bad, and even the ugly of this formerly isolated region. While there’s plenty of beauty and culture to be had, the region’s communist-era legacy—from stacks of abandoned concrete monoliths to lessthan-trusting locals—remains. If you’re looking for the kind of European fairy-tale charm that recalls Disney’s “It’s a Small World” or The Sound of Music, stick to the predictably picturesque Upper Danube. But if you have a penchant for exploring the unknown, can handle a bit of grit, and love to embrace outof-the-ordinary experiences, the Lower Danube rewards handsomely. Only the adventurous need embark. (scenicusa.com) «

Because all itineraries on the Scenic Black Sea Explorer begin or end in Budapest, travelers can extend their trip beyond the scheduled 11 days to revel in Central Europe’s hottest city and stay at the Aria Hotel Budapest, recently crowned Trip Advisor’s No. 1 hotel in the world. The immaculate Aria fuses high design and classical music, illustrating exactly why Hungary’s capital is reclaiming its precommunist title as the Paris of the East. Each stylish guest room celebrates a great musical legacy through sight and sound, and every nook of the property—from the rooftop bar to the subterranean spa to the central atrium atop piano-tiled flooring—is idyllic social media fodder. Poetry in Motion By Howard Walker

Audi’s redesigned R8 V10 Coupe is so fast, so powerful, so thrilling, it might inspire drivers to break into verse

52

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

When mulling over the merits of Audi’s latest iteration of its R8 supercar, forgive me for reverting to the celebrated English poet and sonneteer Elizabeth Barrett Browning, or Lizzy B. to her friends. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Allow me to do just that and count the ways my love spilleth over for this $190,000, Lamborghini V-10-powered, all-wheel drive, twoseat projectile. 1. If looks could thrill. Seeing this Teutonic rocket ship in the metal can turn grown men into blubbering wrecks. It did me; I wept the entire week I spent with it. This car is beyond gorgeous, with its skislope roofline, bold honeycomb grille, edgy LED headlights, and blunt-instrument, mid-engine supercar stance. It’s such a refined, sophisticated evolution of the original R8 introduced back in 2006. 2. It has the power. I love that the R8’s 5.2-liter V-10 skips the now de rigueur turbochargers and superchargers to stick with raw, unvarnished, natural aspiration. It cranks out 610 horseys (there’s a 540-hp version, but why would you bother?), making it the most powerful production Audi ever. 3. It puts that power on show. To walk up to the R8 and gaze at that mighty V-10 exposed under its glass cover is like seeing the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. Good luck trying to climb into the

driver’s seat with throngs of slack-jawed gongoozlers admiring the motor every time you park. 4. It has the speed. Boy, does it have the speed. With quattro allwheel drive, masterful launch-control computer trickery, and an insane 8,500-rpm redline, this Audi slingshots from standstill to 60 mph in a mere 3.2 seconds—and sucks the air out of your lungs in doing so. The soundtrack as the tach needle rushes to the red is more soulful than Pavarotti in his prime. Top speed? A nontrivial 205 mph. 5. It moves like Jagger. No other supercar is this easy, this undemanding, this un-scary to drive crazy-fast. I swear your 90-year-old granny could hot-lap Sebring without palpitations. The car simply goes where you point it, thanks to precise steering, an agile and balanced all-wheel drive chassis, and clingy 20-inch tires at each corner. Yet, what sets the R8 apart in supercar circles is its limo-like ride comfort. 6. It shifts. That big V-10 is coupled to one of the most intuitive, fast-acting 7-speed dual-clutch automatics on the planet. The ratios are so tightly packed that, for rapid-fire shifts, there’s almost no reason to bother with the big, wheel-mounted paddle shifters. But then again, why wouldn’t you? Having fingertip control of 610 horses is like gaming with a PlayStation on steroids. 7. You get the best seat in the house. Sinking into the hip-hugging, racing shell seats is like entering a couture cocoon. Feel the soft caress

&

of the finest, hand-stitched, quilted nappa leather and Alcantara suede, accented by the kind of side bolstering that grips you tighter than a squeeze from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. 8. Its instruments are unreal. Audi’s 12.3-inch virtual cockpit digital display is the way instrumentation should be presented. I love how the single, super high-resolution screen can switch between Google Earth maps, media functions, and all the various drive mode settings, eliminating unnecessary distractions. 9. It’s built like a battleship. Next to a Porsche 911 Turbo, there’s no other vehicle this well-made, this obsessively focused on quality, or this much of a tactile joy. 10. It’s a true everyday supercar. Okay, a Lambo Huracán or McLaren 570S might look wilder and more exotic, but the Audi, especially the 610-hp R8 V10 Plus version I drove, just feels more complete, enjoyable, comfortable, and usable on a daily basis. So, how do I love thee, Audi R8? Elizabeth dear, I’ve lost count of the ways. «

JACK MULVENA WITH GAILLYN, TERRIER MIX, 2 YEARS OLD The president and CEO of Naples Zoo heard the call of the wild at a young age, describing himself as “that kid who was always running around in the woods.” Mulvena moved to Naples four years ago after serving as director of the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island. He grew up exploring the woods behind his childhood home in Delaware, and laments how few kids enjoy that same simple pleasure now. “What I love about the zoo is it gives children an opportunity to connect with animals and nature in a place parents feel is safe,” says Mulvena, who is currently focusing on the zoo’s $25 million capital campaign. This fall, the zoo will break ground on an animal hospital, followed by a new entrance experience complete with education centers, among other projects. What few people know: I have a tattoo on my left shoulder blade; I go to horror movies alone because my wife hates them; and I can’t sleep at night with my arm and hand extended off the bed because I’m afraid someone or something is going to grab me. Furry family: A 14-year-old golden retriever named Buddy and a 2-and-a-half-year-old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix named Jake, adopted from the Humane Society. Buddy’s a momma’s boy; Jake is a daddy’s boy—and all attitude. Aha moment: Several years ago, I forced myself to go on my normal early morning run even though I didn’t feel like it. On that run, I followed a young fox and saw a deer with a couple of fawns, two bluebirds, a bunch of goldfinches, and an American kestrel. Sometimes in life, magical and unexpected things happen when you force yourself to do something you didn’t want to do. Perfect day: Up at 5 a.m. for fishing in the Everglades. Tennis or golf with my wife in the early afternoon, followed by beach time and cooling off in the Gulf. For a late dinner, caprese salad and fennel sausage pizza sitting outside at Campiello, then a walk to Naples Pier and back.

The happiest people I know are usually the most generous.”

TOM MORAN WITH EVA, PIT BULL, 4 YEARS OLD

A dedicated father to six children, four dogs, and two cats, Tom Moran rarely sees a dull moment. After first visiting Naples during college, he returned following graduation to join a local investment firm and later married Sandi, a fifthgeneration Floridian. Their clan includes three biological children, two children they fully embraced as part of the family after their mother—a longtime friend—passed away, and a Chinese international student who has been living with the Morans since high school. As founder and managing partner of Moran Edwards Asset Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, Moran ranked as the No. 1 Financial Advisor in Florida in 2017 by Barron’s magazine. His talent in the finance world is matched only by his philanthropic efforts, which almost always involve children. Over the years, he and Sandi have been board members for several local children’s organizations, as well as trustees for the Naples Children and Education Foundation, serving as chairs for the Naples Winter Wine Festival in 2015 and 2016. Personal hero: My father, Thomas J. Moran. He overcame childhood polio, enlisted at age 18 in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, was a New York City cop for 27 years, completed 15 years of night school, had a 50-mile commute to work, and was married for 55 years. He ate my mom’s meatloaf all that time and never had the heart to tell her he didn’t like meatloaf. “Super” hidden gems: Amore Restaurant, my wife’s hamburgers (Sandi Burgers), and Old Collier Golf Club. Words to live by: Four things you cannot recover: the stone after the throw, the word after it’s said, the occasion after it’s missed, and the time after it’s gone. 56

We started as two people just trying to do something nice for our veterans. There’s a saying that success is measured by the lives you touch. If true, I think we have been successful.” SEAN LUX WITH YANCY, SOUTHERN CUR, 1 YEAR OLD

It should come as no surprise that Sean Lux, an Air Force veteran with family members who served in World War II and a wife who was an officer in the Navy, co-founded Collier County Honor Flight. Lux and his wife, Debi, launched the nonprofit three years ago as a regional hub of Honor Flight Network, which honors America’s veterans for their service by flying them to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials built for them. The Luxes first served as guardians for a flight through the national organization. “There were three people from Naples on the flight, and my guy was 96 years old and had waited over two years to take his flight,” Lux says. “So we started our own hub out of Naples that now covers Collier and Lee counties.” To date, Lux’s organization has escorted 841 World War II and Korean War veterans to D.C. “Through their Honor Flights, these veterans understand that we have not forgotten the sacrifices they made for us, and we hear over and over again how it was the best day of their lives,” says Lux, whose charitable work also helped send him down a new career path from software engineer to law school at the Ave Maria School of Law, where he will graduate in December. Can’t live without: My wife, Debi. I would be lost without her to keep me in line. What few pople know: I have an incredible sense of humor, but most people only see the serious Sean; when I commit to something, I never, ever give up; and I love just being at home with my wife and “furry” family— one wonderful dog and four equally amazing cats. Bucket-list topper: A trip to Normandy and a stop in Ireland on the way back.

In the fire service, it’s so rewarding to help people, especially when you can save their lives, houses, dogs, or cats.” KYLE RAMBOSK WITH BOOKER, HOUND MIX, 8 YEARS OLD

A Naples native, 28-year-old Kyle Rambosk helps protect the community through his role as interim lieutenant and paramedic at the City of Naples Fire Rescue. He says growing up in a household dedicated to public service had a great impact on his life; he credits his father, Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, as one of his biggest influences. Kyle began pursuing his dream of becoming a firefighter right after high school. Just completing the rigorous physical and mental training is quite an accomplishment, and Kyle’s roles have expanded to include everything from being part of a dive rescue to serving as a medic on the Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team. “The toughest part of my training was S.W.A.T.,” says Kyle, who has also received several Collier County Phoenix Awards that honor first responders who successfully resuscitate cardiac arrest victims. “We had to go through the same type of school police officers go through, which is an entire week of intense training with anything from shooting and physical agility to learning movement techniques and dealing with exposure to different gases.” Perfect day: Paddleboarding and hanging out in a hammock on an island. Superpower wish: To teleport so I can go anywhere in the world. Top of his playlist: “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bucket-list topper: Climb Mount Rainier, Washington’s highest peak. Best advice received: Keep moving forward. You can’t change things in the past, so you just deal with them and keep moving. Words to live by: Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Naples is a place where I felt I could truly create my own life. It is where innovation, creation, and selfdetermination are fully supported in a way that is really unique.”

MATTHEW HUDDLESTON WITH PATTY, CHIHUAHUA, 2 YEARS OLD

Creativity and inspiration are always at the forefront of Matthew Huddleston’s mind. The event designer’s 50Fifty Creative Services company has thrived in Naples for more than 23 years—quite the feat for an entrepreneur in a small town that’s ever-changing. What Huddleston originally started as a modest floral company in Naples is now renowned for the special events he and his business partner, Louis Boutier, create, many of which are fundraisers for local charities, including the upcoming American Red Cross Gala celebrating the organization’s 100th anniversary in Southwest Florida. As 50Fifty has gained acclaim, the company has been expanding nationally and internationally, though Huddleston says there’s no place like home and he remains “forever dedicated to Naples.” Personal heroes: My parents, who at 88 have shown me what enduring love is, and who, from the time I could understand them, told me I could be and do anything I wanted. Hidden talent: Singing. I performed in New York for the majority of my 20s. I still sit at the piano and sing almost every day. In fact, I sometimes “hear” an event before I see one when I’m designing. Can’t live without: Chocolate and working out—unfortunately, in that order. Superpower wish: Teleportation. I could see my family in New York City, pop over to Angkor Wat for a moment of meditation, go for a walk along the Seine, watch the sunset on Laguna Beach, and be back in bed before 11 p.m. That beats any private jet. Bucket-list topper: Seeing Earth from space. «

This front wheel drive, straight-8 convertible could spin heads along every inch of the Sunset Boulevard. View it in profile and it stands prouder than a soldier at Buckingham Palace. Only the sweeping fenders, rounded hood, and peculiar headlights offer some visual relief. But this glorious white-and-blue example, which was loved by just one owner for 69 years, looks spectacular from all angles.

By all accounts it was a lovely car to drive, with nimble handling, a spritely performance, and a sumptuous ride. Mechanical drum brakes at each wheel, however, made stopping in a hurry a nail-biting affair. The 1931 model was all about style and grace. By 1928, design pioneer Harley Earl was heading up GM’s fabled Art and Color Division (shorthand for the styling department). His finesse is evident in the V-12’s flowing fenders and prominent chrome grille. Today, the V-12 and its unique look make a wonderful entry into ’30s classic car collecting. «

FARMERS MARKET:

FOODIE FINDS

You don’t have to wait until season to hunt down foodie treasures at local farmers markets. One of at least a couple that run year-round, Third Street Farmers Market convenes downtown every Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. The region’s first, it opened in the mid-1990s. Here are three tasty treats you won’t want to miss as you navigate the scents and tastes among fall vendors. (thirdstreetsouth.com)

Calamondin bundt cake: The only U.S. producer of exclusively calamondin products, made from eponymous Ping Pong ball-sized citrus fruit grown in Cape Coral, Calamondin Cottage creates three sizes of cakes—all of them moist, tangy, and sweetly glazed. (239-321-1894)

Sundried morels: Pineywood Morels owner Karen Knotek travels each summer to Oregon to hunt for these precious, meaty gems. She then brings them back to Arcadia to sun-dry them, retaining their full flavor and nutritional value. $25/ounce. (floridablueberrysandmorels.com)

Black Tulip Coffee beans: It sources whole, organic beans from unusual places like Ethiopia, Bali, and Guatemala, and small-batch roasts them in Naples. Bags of coffee beans start at $12 for 8 ounces. Buy a wakeup sample at the market for $3-$4 per cup of fresh drip- or cold-brewed joe. (blacktulipcoffee.com)

Boozy Desserts

Adding alcohol to a dessert can immediately spike its appeal and popularity. Just look at bananas Foster, a classic fiery rum concoction created in the 1950s. Around Naples, restaurants are putting their own spin on sweet and boozy treats.

"

LIQUORS LEND THEMSELVES WELL TO THE SWEET SPECTRUM OF COOKING,” SAYS DAVID LANI, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT CATCH 41 IN NAPLES. “DRINKERS AND FOODIES ARE INTRIGUED BY HOW CHEFS ARE INFUSING ALCOHOL WITH SWEETS FOR A GREAT FINISH TO THEIR MEAL.”

"

IT IS DIFFICULT TO EXPLAIN WHY IT IS SO SPECIAL,” SAYS OWNER TOM NÜTTEN OF LAMORAGA, “BUT ITS NAME SAYS IT ALL.” The crowd-pleaser at Lamoraga is A Little Piece of Heaven, which layers light and fluffy Grand Marnier-infused ice cream on a thin layer of sponge cake with a sugary topping.

The Beer Stout Pud

ding

Catch 41’s dinner menu boasts three booze-spiked concoctions. Most unusual, the Beer Stout Pudding includes a Midnight Express Espresso craft beer made in Bradenton. Layers of pudding alternate with beerinfused whipped cream and crumbled vanilla wafers in a Mason jar, topped with fresh berries and mint. Crème de menthe liqueur fortifies Catch 41’s skillet chocolate lava cake, made with imported Belgian chocolate, fresh mint, and white chocolate chips. Newest to the menu, a French toast invention involves dipping sliced yellow pound cake in a RumChata cream liqueur egg wash, then rolling it in coconut flakes and flash-frying. Wait, that’s not the end of the spirits: A topping of vanilla ice cream, bourbon caramel, and fresh berries finishes it off.

The Counter at Mercato serves up Spiked Shakes, but staff refers to them as “adult milk shakes,” thanks to the shot of liquor that fortifies their popularity. Out of the five different flavors, “Thin Mint is the most popular by far,” says bartender Mark Anthony Good. “Red Velvet is second.” Bailey’s Irish Cream and crème de menthe liqueur add to Thin Mint’s blend of vanilla ice cream, ground chocolate chips, and whipped cream. For the Red Velvet, a red wine blend and fresh strawberry puree tint it pink. To its vanilla ice cream base, bartenders also add chocolate syrup, whipped cream topping, and a chocolate chip garnish.

Taste Gluten-Free

Goodness

GLOBAL

You could say that Ruth Wardein had an epiphany when she realized Naples was ready for its first gluten-free bakery with a dedicated storefront. She had been baking for decades to suit her and her father’s celiac diet. As gluten-free ingredients appeared on the market, Wardein, a ballet teacher, began baking for customers and selling at farmers markets in 2012. She envisioned a “safe place” for those like her, where they could indulge in remembered comfort food and sweet treats without having to worry that gluten would crash the experience. Epiphany Gluten-Free Bakery opened in North Naples this summer, after selling from the storefront’s sidewalk for many months. Wardein bakes more than 50 sweet and savory treats, which are also customized for vegan, dairy-free, low-sugar, Paleo, and a slew of other diets and sensitivities. Her café menu features pancakes, waffles, chicken potpies, pizzas, soup bowls, and “other things you miss if you’re gluten-free,” she says. “Food is emotional. It’s hard for people to change.” But Wardein says she experiments extensively to find the right taste and texture for her gluten-free versions of comfort-food favorites. “I feel like a mad scientist,” she says.

Chianti wine region

Barone Ricasoli winery and Brolio castl e

The Call of Chianti Following decades of disfavor, Chianti has finally found its place in connoisseur cellars BY MARK SPIVAK

Hannibal Lecter aside, Chianti was not a very popular wine in America for many years. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was mostly consumed in Italian restaurants with red and white-checkered tablecloths, where it was the cheapest and worst wine on the list. More often than not, it was poured from a straw-covered bottle called a fiasco that, when empty, would be outfitted with candles and used as decoration, earning a reputation as the poor man’s candelabra. This sad turn of events was surprising, considering Chianti has a long and Coltassala has hints of fabled history. It was made in Tuscany vanilla, cacao, as early as the thirteenth century, and and fruit. the first attempt to delineate its production area occurred in 1716. Baron Ricasoli invented modern Chianti (which is a blended wine) at the Brolio estate in 1872, with the goal of lifting the region out of poverty. Ricasoli’s blend survived for more than a century and was codified in the Italian wine law in 1967: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Canaiolo, and 15 percent white grapes (Trebbiano and Malvasia). At the time, Italy was still 100 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

languishing in the aftermath of World War II, winemaking technology was primitive, and quality tended to be poor. By the 1990s, however, Italy had joined the European Union and was producing wine for export. Some winemakers wanted to make Chianti exclusively from Sangiovese, but a revolutionary group had started to incorporate Cabernet Sauvignon into their wine, making it more appealing to an international clientele. The Super Tuscans were born. Today, it’s difficult to find a bottle of Chianti that doesn’t contain some Cabernet, and the Chianti Classico region between Florence and Siena turns out some of the world’s most accomplished wines. The good news is prices haven’t yet caught up to some of their exalted neighbors, like Bolgheri and Brunello di Montalcino. Here are a few favorites, mostly Riserva wines aged for the minimum of 24 months before release: CASTELLO DI AMA: Equally famous for stunning art installations as it is for wine, Castello di Ama turns out the region’s most collectible bottles, including Vigneto La Casuccia ($160) and Vigneto Bellavista ($175), as well as the unusual Merlot-based L’Apparita ($180). CASTELLO DI VOLPAIA: A founding member of the Chianti League in 1250, Volpaia is an ancient winery that has been revitalized in the modern era. Its wines range from Coltassala ($60, a Riserva) and Balifico ($40, a Sangiovese/Cabernet blend) to the blockbuster Chianti Il Puro Casanova ($165).

Designed with high-energy savings in mind, the Antinori Nel Chianti Classico winery has minimal impact on the environment.

BADIA A COLTIBUONO: Located outside the village of Gaiole, this restored monastery features a hotel, a restaurant, and a cooking school as well as a winery. While its Chianti Riservas are excellent, connoisseurs reach for the Sangioveto di Toscana ($60), a 100-percent Sangiovese wine only produced in superior vintages. ANTINORI: With a lineage of 26 generations going back to 1385, this family-run winery has had more than enough time to get it right. Highlights include the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello estate ($45) and the Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione ($55).

Castello di Ama’s Chianti estate

FONTODI: The Manetti family has lovingly renovated and maintained this estate since 1968. The Vigna del Sorbo Riserva ($85) is a perennial favorite, but the benchmark wine is Flaccianello della Pieve ($135), 100 percent Sangiovese and aged in French oak barrels. BARONE RICASOLI (BROLIO): The winery where it all started is now the largest estate in the region, lauded for the Castello di Brolio Gran Selezione ($55, Sangiovese blended with Merlot and Cabernet) and Colledila ($65, 100 percent Sangiovese from a vineyard that has been part of the property for centuries). «

Balance Take Flight This season, some beachgoers will enjoy a bird’s-eye view of our coastline with an exhilarating parasailing ride. While ascending hundreds of feet in the air may seem daunting, parasailers are fitted with a life jacket and strapped securely into a harness. The parasail wing, which resembles a parachute, makes you feel like you’re floating, all while attached to a tow line on a boat. The ride ends with a gradual descent back onto the boat—and the panoramic views of the Gulf are more than worth it. When you’re ready to ride, Bonita Jet Ski & Parasail (bonitajetski.com) takes off from Bonita Beach, behind Doc’s Beach House restaurant, and offers heights of 600 feet or 1,200 feet. There are also photo options, so you don’t have to bring a camera or phone. Owner Bill Hanson recommends scheduling a morning ride to avoid afternoon showers. Don’t miss the optional water dip at the end of your flight to cool off your toes. Farther south, Marco Island Watersports (marcoisland watersports.com) features parasailing adventures that offer a spectacular view of the Ten Thousand Islands. Fly solo or opt for the twoor three-person ride to share the experience. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and reservations are recommended. —Anna Bjorlin

RISING STARS Gulfshore Playhouse’s Fifth Annual New Works Festival returns September 7-16 with a fresh lineup of plays, as it brings together playwrights, actors, and directors from across the country. For the second year, Gulfshore Playhouse (gulfshoreplayhouse.org) will use a system of blind submissions reviewed by volunteer readers before narrowing the pool down to four finalists. The festival allows audience members a glimpse into what the playwriting process looks like, while providing the playwrights the opportunity to work with professional actors and directors to hone their plays. “When the plays come to us, some are ready right off the bat for professional production and just need a tweak or two to satisfy the playwright,” says Jeffrey Binder, associate art director at the Gulfshore Playhouse. “And other plays we love to take on because the idea presented is incredible, but the play is in its earliest stages and may need

to be heard aloud and wrestled with to bring out its fullest potential.” This year, the fifth play will be a workshop of one of last year’s finalists, Miss Keller Has No Second Book, by Deb Hiett. “We’re workshopping that piece this fall to give Deb an opportunity to make changes, updates, and test out some ideas before its first full professional production this spring by Gulfshore Playhouse,” Binder says. —Savannah Christensen

Sense of Place

AMALFI COAST

1

Cynthia Carlson

MICHAEL CARONCHI

began designing jewelry as a teenager growing up in Minnesota and quickly realized it was more than a hobby. “People started noticing the jewelry I made for myself and wanted me to make it for them,” she says. “By the time I was 18, I was designing pieces for stores.” Today, Carlson marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of her namesake fine jewelry store in Naples. Her passion for jewelry began as a child, during many travel adventures with her parents. “We were rock hounds,” she says. “We would collect exotic rocks and shells on 2 the islands and make seashell jewelry with beads.” She still has trays of rocks, shells, sea glass, and even driftwood at home—all treasured keepsakes from her adventures. 1. Thrill of the hunt: We’d go to Lake Superior in the fall and hunt for agates all day long. When I travel now I like to collect sea glass on the Amalfi Coast. I’m always searching for that unusual piece. That’s where the love of all gemstones came from. I appreciate what goes into finding it. Words to live by: 2. Favorite escapes: Lake Minnetonka for wakeboarding and sailing; Telluride for Smile—it’s a universal mountain biking and hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. language. 3. Esteemed fashion designers: Prada and Hermès for shoes and handbags because they’re timeless and last forever. 4. Best stress reliever: Hot power yoga with Gus at Green Monkey, Naples. 5. Favorite gemstones: I’m all about blue—sapphire, turquoise, and aquamarine. The colors of the water and sky. 6. Go-to scent: Le Cherche Midi #1 signature scent. I was so obsessed with it that I purchased the company in the spring. It has a cult following, and it’s such a great scent. 7. Bucket-list topper: Maldives and Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. 8. Beloved charity: Cancer Alliance of Naples. All the proceeds stay in Collier County. I have lost several family members to the disease, and I know almost everyone’s family has been touched by it as well. 7
