From the Publisher
You will probably hear this a lot from me—our home and garden issue is always one of my favorites. Not only does it have all of my hobbies rolled up into one beautiful package, it is also one of our most requested issues by our readers. This time we’ve got everything from gardens artfully designed by world renowned landscape architects to homes that I would be able to move into tomorrow with nothing but my toothbrush and feel at home. The design talent in our area is unmatched! And as I think about the many luxurious ways to spruce up a home, it’s also worth pointing out that this season is already showing such promising signs of a recovering economy. With doubledigit percentage increases in home sales in all price ranges in the real estate market here, it is refreshing to hear the big sighs of relief from the industry that was hit the hardest. When you drive in any direction you’re likely to see a new development under construction, while the developers diligently try to replenish the depleted inventory of new homes. That being said, while promoting our special section, “Spaces,” for the design industry, we heard from so many of the designers that business is booming, and they were all looking forward to a very lively season. Browse through our Spaces section and check out the designers’ styles, and see if one has that personal touch you have been searching for. We have also made finding just that right fit a little easier with our Design Directory. Whether you are looking for that perfect flooring for your home yoga studio or finally gearing up for that kitchen remodel you have been coveting, we have the contacts right here and only a phone call or email away. So while you flip through the beautiful pages of this issue, remember that it’s okay to linger a while, grab that second cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy! I know I plan on it. Happy decorating!

As we usher in the fall, we’re reminded how the start of a new season always seems to bring a sense of renewed optimism. We freshen our wardrobes and look for unique ways to refashion our homes. In this issue, we’ll explore several spectacular homes from the inside out as we shine a spotlight on home and garden. For outdoor inspiration, you’ll find a handful of impressively sculpted landscapes— including custom water features, a cozy cabana and more—by turning to “The Great Outdoors” on page 58. If your focus is more behind closed doors, take a look at “Makeover Magic” on page 76 for the inside scoop on a luxurious makeover of a Naples home, with expert tips sprinkled in along the way. And if your decor style is more sea-centric, you'll find beachy inspiration on page 46. Of course, it’s also October, which means Halloween is on its way and so are the celebrations. What’s on trend in costumes? Check out Insider, starting on page 31, plus our pick for adding a touch of spooky elegance to your home for the holiday. Finally, the issue includes some of your feedback on the recent redesign of the magazine (which made a splash in the September issue, just before I came on board). You’ll find a sampling of reader comments peppered throughout our pages—and the praise nearly made our team blush. In the coming months, you’ll see more refinements as we work every day to improve upon the last. And we always want to hear from you on what is working—and what could be better. You can see all our Web extras by turning to page 22. Then, reach out to us through our website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or simply write me a letter. I’m listening and ready to usher it all in.

Makes 6 6 Jules Destrooper Almond Thins 1 banana Nutella 1 tbsp. of cinnamon and sugar Peel and slice banana to fit atop almond thins, about 2 inches apiece. Halloween is one occasion that has us morphing into Lady Mary Crawley, Daisy Buchanan, a groovy sixties chick or Marilyn Monroe, but the swirl of season also brings a profusion of themed gatherings for which a costume is de rigueur. For unique getups suitable for a Jazz Age party, a ‘50s sock hop, an Austin Powers shindig and everything in between, Neapolitans in the know rely on the artistic eye of Quenby Tyler at Audrey’s on Tenth Street South, who mines a trove of vintage (and reproduction) dresses, shoes, gloves, hats, bags and jewelry, to fashion a stunning outfit. “We’ve been getting a lot of requests for 1920s-themed clothing for events in town,” says Tyler. “Downton Abbey is also popular.” Along with her mom, Sonja Tilley, the shop’s owner, and niece Ashley Means, the staff decks out clients from head to toe. The Audrey’s team also keeps careful account of who’s wearing what to each event, ensuring each partygoer creates a singular sensation. (audreys-attic.com) —Kat Smith

Hat tricks
Before the social season officially kicks off with the Naples Botanical Garden annual Hats in the Garden, the hunt for the perfect topper to wow the luncheon crowd is on. We asked Marilyn Hellman of Marilyn’s Distinctive European Fashion, Naples, to clue us in on the top three trends. First, Hellman says, get ready to bring on the drama because dramatic and edgy shapes, and feathers are in. Next, look out for hats in shades of gray. And finally, consider a vintage 1920s look as The Great Gatsby craze is still in full swing. Hellman recommends choosing any “brim you can handle,” and notes that younger women are gravitating to fascinators. For personalized advice, reserve your seat for Hellman’s complimentary seminar “Picking the Right Hat,” October 16, then shop the wide assortment of designer chapeaux from Philip Treacy (who has created looks for Lady Gaga and Britain’s royal family), Stephen Jones, Misaharada and more. Local merchants stand up for breast cancer awareness month.
The La Vie En Rose designs can be customized to commemorate a loved one or celebrate freedom from cancer.
Whipping out a credit card feels good, and this month shopping can actually save lives. Local jewelry designers Amanda Jaron of A. Jaron Fine Jewelry (ajaron.com) and William Boyajian of Port Royal Jewelers (portroyaljewel ers.com) are both committed to contributing time and talent to help others in need. Taking a cue from the Candy Ribbon Cuff Jaron designed for breast cancer charities last year, the duo teamed up for a collection called La Vie En Rose, including cuffs, hoop earrings and rings in sterling silver with pink sapphires and gold accents. Fifty percent of the collection’s sales benefit Cancer Alliance of Naples, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Garden of Hope and Courage. The designers will create a unique cuff to be raffled at the charitable Fourth Annual Stiletto Sprint October 19 on Fifth Avenue South. Saks Fifth Avenue at Waterside Shops is partnering with Cancer Alliance of Naples for the annual Key to the Cure (KTTC). The fundraiser, hosted by Saks and Physicians Regional Hospital, kicks off October 17. The party is a perfect opportunity to have fun and scoop up the collectible KTTC logo tee (this year’s is designed by Emilio Pucci and sported by spokeswoman Jennifer Aniston). All charity T-shirt sales and a portion of all purchases at Saks during that weekend will benefit Cancer Alliance of Naples. (saks fifthavenue.com) Blue Martini in Mercato is pushing the charity envelope this month as its staff dons pink corsets for a cause. The lounge is partnering with the American Cancer Society and hosting a Pink Party October 5. Try the featured Tickled Pink cocktail ($1 per drink goes to charity). Entrance fee: $10 charitable donation.

Main Squeeze Grab a straw and sip down some good health at the juice bar that opened this summer on Fifth Avenue South. Raw Delicious, an extension of The Café makes the most of the raw diet and juicing trends, offering freshly pressed juices and smoothies using a variety of fruits and veggies. The drinks cover a wide range of options for every taste. Looking for a light, refreshing midday snack? Try the Watermelon Detox Refresher, a combination of watermelon and mint. For something more filling, try the Super Stamina Smoothie, made with mango, pineapple, banana, whey protein and coconut water. For that added boost of energy and protein, whey shots can be added to any beverage. The bar also fills the bill when you want to meet for drinks but it seems too late for coffee and too early for cocktails. —Olivia LeClair

HANNITY
Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity can be seen on his eponymous program, Hannity, weekday evenings, but don’t be surprised if you run into him around town. The talk show host and author retreats to his Naples condo as often as his schedule allows. Like many of us, he first found the city while visiting for business and fell head over heels. The conservative pundit talked with NI about his career, his Naples experiences and his family. NI: What do you think of our city on the Paradise Coast? SH: That’s what I call Naples, paradise. I get off the plane, and as I’m driving into my little place there, everyone’s outside running and doing other outdoor activities in the middle of winter. I’m thinking, “Why do I live up north in the cold?” Naples is just beautiful. I love Fifth Avenue South, the beach, the golf and the people. How did you discover Naples? I used to do a lot more speaking engagements earlier in my career. I went 34

Some of his favorites: Dining: Vergina, Chops City Grill, Skyline Chili Golf: Tiburón Golf Club Tennis: Cambier Park The waterfront: Riding Jet Skis in the Gulf or exploring the mangroves with his two kids, and fishing Perfect evening: Dinner on Fifth Avenue South and live music in Sugden Plaza
to Naples three or four times. One time I brought my wife and kids with me. We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples and my family loved it. How often do you visit? My kids have busy schedules, so unfortunately not as often as I want—a couple of times a season. We spend two weeks around Christmas, and I try to sneak in a few long weekends. Naples is definitely my future home. We hear you are a tennis fan. Is it a family affair? My kids don’t want to play with me anymore because I’m not as good as they are. My daughter is 11 and my son is 14, and they play USTA tournaments. My kids play much more tennis than I do and at a much higher level than I ever did. Tiburón has courts, and we play at Cambier Park; it’s the nicest place with some of the bestkept tennis courts I’ve seen for a public facility. —Dorothea Hunter Sönne
Royal Treatment Dutch native and Bonita Springs resident Jantiena Fieyra has a passion for sharing singular experiences. Known locally as the creator, producer and host of travel show Carpe Diem TV, Fieyra is now working on a new series titled Royalty and Nobility with Jantiena Fieyra, which will showcase royal families in Europe. Her curiosity was ignited by the news this year that Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands would abdicate in favor of her son Willem-Alexander. She hopped on a plane to Europe with the goal of digging up the nitty-gritty of royal families. As recently as last year, Fox 4 and cable channel My TV 8 aired Fieyra’s Carpe Diem TV episodes, which documented her travels to some of Europe’s most elegant destinations. She explored St. Moritz for “white-turf” horseracing in the snow, visited Florence to showcase the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella (one of the world’s oldest makers of fragrances) and crisscrossed Milan, London and Paris for Fashion Week. Fieyra is working with a distributor to pitch her new series to networks in the United States and abroad; she expects it to air sometime next year. This Just In The old adage to “write what you know” clearly figured into the work of Marco Island resident Don Farmer, who has penned his first novel, Deadly News (Headline Books, 2013). While the career newsman is the author, he relied on his wife of 41 years, Chris Curle, to help shape the story. “Chris’s contributions were a major part of the project. She did much of the research and proofreading. She also helped with character development,” Farmer says. The journalists, whose careers collectively span 99 years, have reported on countless major news events and covered legendary figures. In Deadly News, the action begins with a movie star’s murder, the ensuing news coverage and the police investigation. The plot is set in Atlanta, Florida and London. Farmer says, “We had so much fun creating characters and putting them in real places here in Southwest Florida.” Catch Farmer and Curle in person at Barnes & Noble in Naples October 19 and at the Art League of Marco Island’s fundraiser October 25. —Kat Smith

Storytelling design
Vicki Woolington (left) and Brandi Lucrecio of Kenundrem Design Studio turn discarded items into unique treasures.
Vicki Woolington and Brandi Lucrecio, a mother-daughter team, are the owners of Kenundrem Design Studio, Naples, and count more than 30 years of combined experience. The two repurpose and recycle materials to re-create any living space. These home transformers scour Southwest Florida for inspiration, tapping whatever they find useful, from an old spoon to a jar of pennies. Woolington is a self-taught designer who would take scraps of doors and windows and piece them together to make something new. “I started refinishing furniture as a hobby, and once I played with the products I realized distressing was my passion,” she says. Brandi took what she learned as a child to the next level, earning a degree in design from the American Intercontinental University of London. Kenundrem’s motto is to “define your style within your lifestyle.” Rooms should tell a story of your life. The designers listen to client’s stories, and then surround them with memories they can see daily. To illustrate: former MLB pitcher Don Carman and his wife, Kathy, are world travelers who own a home in Naples. Their bed is made of materials found in Guatemala and their home’s outdoor space reflects a recent trip to Paris. “Kenundrem has made my house feel alive again,” says Kathy. “I love telling my guests the stories of each and every piece.” —Jenna Choate

Got the DIY bug? Take a quick break from Pinterest and try your hand at Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging. Ikebana International of Naples hosts regular meetings at Moorings Presbyterian Church, as well as seminars and special events throughout the year. A tradition dating back to ancient Japanese and Buddhist traditions, there are more than 3,000 different types, or schools, of flower arranging. The Naples organization focuses on three of those. Each element of an arrangement represents a greater symbol, such as heaven, Earth and mankind. Arranging blossoms and leaves just so unites the elements in their natural hierarchy. The study of Ikebana is considered a lifelong pursuit to its most dedicated students—but new members are welcome at any time to the local group. Escape Ecuador’s Mashpi Lodge, set high amid the western slopes of the Andes, has become the ne plus ultra of jungle chic.
Cloud Break By Paul Rubio
The love match between nature and luxury may not be a new one, but it’s making news in Ecuador’s super-biodiverse cloud forest. The recent opening of the superbly designed Mashpi Lodge opens a new chapter in luxe exploration in the tropical Andean highlands—a fascinating world of dramatic waterfalls, rare orchids, 45foot leafy ferns and otherworldly fauna. The resort’s high design, high thread counts, foodie fantasias and stellar service have enticed the full spectrum of jet-setters to immerse themselves in this mystical retreat engulfed in mind-blowing biodiversity and inspiring topography.
049-Escape-1013.indd 49
Mashpi, which means “friends of the water” in local dialect, rises to glory on a plateau in the center of 3,200 acres of protected forest ranging up to thousands of feet in elevation. The reserve spans myriad ecosystems, including the World Wildlife Fund-designated ecoregion Chocó-Darién Moist Forests. Nearly 500 species of birds merge on this precious tract of Earth, only 68 miles northwest of the country’s capital, Quito. These birds also share the land with native oddities like tayras (weasel family), elusive kinkajous, ocelots (daintier cousins of the jaguar) and margays (small, arboreal spotted cats).

Masphi was conceptualized with two central purposes: to introduce tourists to the natural bounties of Ecuador in a luxurious “eco” setting and to create a working research facility to foster and spearhead regional conservation initiatives. The project represents a sustainable option for the nation’s biological heritage that allows humans and other species to benefit. The lodge is a true man-made marvel. Sliding open the two-story castle-like entrance door reveals an unlikely modernist union of dollhouse and greenhouse. Its 24 units are connected by open staircases (nuts and bolts exposed), separated by thick, avant-garde valentine-red lattices. The steps are interrupted by numerous high-design elements to ponder, including pliable chairs cushioned with wine corks and coffee tables constructed from concentric hollow tree trunks. Enveloped in glass, both the guest rooms and the public spaces grant endless panoramas of rain-forest grandeur. Neither televisions nor artwork are needed to illuminate the minimalist white rooms; the strata of green foliage and vibrant birdlife provide more than ample visuals. Its airport’s late-arriving inbound and crack-of-dawn outbound flights often require visitors to stay within this burgeoning city—one of two of the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites—before or after a cloud-forest sojourn. This gives vacationers a chance to explore the charm and grandeur of colonial Old Quito. Plant yourself in the heart of national history at the regal Casa Gangotena, a reinvented mansion overlooking picturesque Plaza San Francisco. The 31-room hotel dazzles with stunning detail, including restored handpainted Belgian tin ceilings, earth-toned three-dimensional carpeting and upholstery, massive bouquets of white roses and ubiquitous orchids, and a fairy-tale courtyard and atrium adorned with pieces from Quito’s archaeological museum. privacy within the rooms, the curtains lower at the touch of a remote, just in case peeping toucans lurk. Every day a new adventure beckons within Mashpi’s cloud forests. By 6:30 a.m., the lodge’s professional naturalists gather on the rooftop with high-tech telescopes adjusted and binoculars in hand to greet early risers, ready to point out a hundred fascinating species of local birds. After breakfast, the day is split between morning and afternoon forest excursions conducted by a personally assigned naturalist. Guests may choose from guided walks along easy, medium or difficult trails to seek out exotic flora and fauna. Another option is Mashpi’s Life Center, an annex of the lodge that serves as a
working research facility, where visitors can learn about current projects on butterfly reproduction or simply relax on loungers high amid the mountains. It’s possible to spy 18 species of hummingbirds fighting, mating and communing around feeders. You can also feel like E.T., flying high through the forest canopy on an aerial bicycle. Alternatively, sleep in and bask in the surrounding beauty from within your glass-encased cocoon. Come afternoon, rest by a waterfall with a chilled bottle of Chardonnay and let the winged wonders come to you. Engage in as many or as few activities as you’d like, but in any case, be flexible, as the tempestuous weather of the cloud forest mandates a plan B at all times. Gourmet meals at the all-inclusive Mashpi Lodge fuel visitors for the twice-daily adventures. Rise and shine to a hearty breakfast spread that includes Western favorites along with fresh exotic fruits like gooseberry, granadilla and dragon fruit (raw or juiced). For lunch, feast on Ecuadorian fish ceviche garnished with corn nuts, popcorn and homemade vegetable chips. Or sample a variety of beautiful salads with sweet and tart fruit dressings, then round out the meal with grilled choclo (a sweet, thick corn) and lean meats. Save room for a few trips to the ice cream bar, showcasing six unique flavors daily (from passion fruit to cocoa nib to beer) and a fun toppings counter. NAPLESillustrated.com | october 2013

Outer Limits Clockwise from top left: Glass Window Bridge; The Cove’s pink beaches; Sidney Torres and fiancée jennifer savoie; cool luxury reigns in the oceanfront cottages; the infinity pool.
54
A game changer for a rugged island, The Cove is upping the ante for luxury travel in the Bahamas.
As you drive through Eleuthera, one of the Bahamas’ Out Islands, you cross a narrow passage called Glass Window Bridge and do a double take: Is the water beneath the bridge clear, calm and turquoise? Or is it indigo with crashing waves? Behold one of the island’s more charming mysteries. On this spot, the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean converge to create this stunning juxtaposition. On one side of the bridge is the deep ocean whose waves crash on a rocky shoreline; on the other is a lagoon-like sea so clear you can practically see the grouper swimming. That contrast is typical on this island, where on any day it is possible to alternate between rugged nature and pure luxury. Eleuthera is one of the Bahamas’ wildest, least developed islands, but it also has resort offerings that stand among the world’s best. Top among those is The Cove, a complex of seaside villas and cottages perched along a rocky promontory flanked by pink sand beaches. New Orleans businessman Sidney Torres bought the 40-acre property, transforming it to the tune of $15 million and infusing it with a sense of urban chic and a young, infectious energy. “Everybody thinks [Eleuthera] is a laid-back surfer’s haven,” Torres says. “You wouldn’t expect to have five-star service and a sense of wow here. But that’s what we wanted: to change the way people thought of the outer islands.” Torres, 38 and usually dressed in top-to-toe
black, looks more like a rocker than a hotelier; a product, perhaps, of his past life as a personal assistant to Lenny Kravitz. But his business savvy is uncanny. In New Orleans, he renovated historic buildings into boutique hotels, developed commercial and residential real estate, and built a sanitation company in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He’s clearly brought the same vision to Eleuthera with big changes such as the addition of a pair of three-bedroom villas, construction of an ultracool bar at the edge of the point and hiring of Bhutanese butlers with a top-notch service ethic. One of those butlers, Kezang Dorji, is an absolute dream. He immediately puts villa guests at ease with his gentle manner, urging them to list their likes and dislikes and to leave the rest to him. And indeed, nothing escapes his keen eye for detail. It’s like traveling with your own staff. The resort itself is a study in minimalist chic, with clean lines, natural surfaces and lots of cool white fabrics. The oceanfront cottages and villas are mere steps from those pink beaches. There are other accommodations on property—garden view rooms and bush cottages nestled in the thicket— but the oceanfront is definitely the way to go. Through October, The Cove offers private plane transportation from Fort Lauderdale and two nights in a three-bedroom villa for $16,500. Small price to pay for paradise. Luxe Treatment With creature comforts that rival opulent spas, the Mercedes-Benz 2014 S-Class takes automotive luxury to a lofty new level. By Howard Walker For today’s spa service, would you prefer the hot-stone treatment or deep-tissue massage? How about a little aromatherapy? We have a choice of four designer fragrances; the Nightlife Mood aroma is very popular. If it’s a little bright, you have the choice of seven ambient light colors, with five levels of brightness. And would you care for a few soothing tunes? We have a great selection of Enya, and we’ve just installed a top-of-theline Burmester sound system—it’s German, you know—with 24 speakers and surround sound. Just amazing. So kick back, relax and sink your head into our puffy suedecovered pillows. In case your elbows get a little chilled, we have lovely heated armrests. If all this sounds like a day at Canyon Ranch or the Ritz-Carlton, you’re right—and wrong. It’s actually what you can experience inside the hedonistic, pleasure-centric cabin of the 2014 MercedesBenz S550. The strategy arm at Mercedes quite smartly deduced that while buyers at this lofty end of the luxury sedan market might say they want sexy styling and lots of neck-snapping performance, what they really want is luxury. Which is why this new S-Class doesn’t look much different from its predecessor and even carries over its twin-turbo, 4.7-liter V-8 engine and transmission. But what has changed is the car’s 56

chaise lounge comfort, the front passenger seat folds origami-style so at least one rear seat rider can stretch out and snooze. As for the hot-rocks massage, it’s awesome. It’s like having toasty-warm golf balls rolled up and down your spine. A built-in heating element combines with air bladders that slowly inflate and deflate. While it may not quite match the finger-work of Helga and her smooth, heated river rocks, it’s a good substitute. And you really can change the interior aroma courtesy of a builtin atomizer that Mercedes marketeers call Air-Balance. But comfort isn’t just about plush leather, massagers and nice scents. One amazing technical innovation with the new “S” is its

cheesily titled Magic Body Control. While it sounds like something you’d buy on QVC for three easy payments of $19.99, it takes driving comfort to a new level. Two tiny stereoscopic cameras mounted in the rear-view mirror read the road surface about 100 feet ahead of the car. They send the data to the car’s hydraulic active dampers, which can relax or stiffen the suspension to absorb the bump. The system is at its most otherworldly when encountering those six-inch-tall, speed-reducing road humps—something Brits call “sleeping policemen.” Normally, colliding with one at 30 mph would have your head ricocheting off the roof. With Magic Body Control, the suspension turns to marshmallow the millisecond it hits the bump, and the car glides over. Yet all this doesn’t mean this new Mercedes flagship has gone all fat and flabby. The new lightweight aluminum body is stiffer
than before and now has near-perfect front/rear-weight balance for sharper handling. While the big twin-turbo V-8 remains—it was only introduced last year—it gets an extra 26 horses, raising output to an impressive 455 hp. If that isn’t enough, wait a few months and there’ll be a thundering S63 AMG on offer. Talking of upcoming models, no fewer than six very different S-Class versions are in the works, including a two-door CL coupe, a possible four-door convertible and a Maybach-replacing Pullman über-luxury model. Add to those Mercedes’ usual AMG, V-12, hybrid and diesels. All this, plus that perfume-radiating atomizer. Why am I sensing the sweet smell of success? «

In Southwest Florida, we know a thing or two about outdoor living. But even in a land where alfresco diversions are ubiquitous, there are still some sun-soaked spaces that can leave us dazzled. Visit a few that put the “out” in outstanding. By Elizabeth Kellar

The front entry of this Olde Cypress home is clearly fabulous, but it has a cool secret, too: There’s some serious technology at work. To combat low-lying water and direct it away from the home and garage, the circular driveway functions like a sieve, with some 200 feet of linear drainage channels hidden below it. The decorative lattice pavers do more than whisk away the excess water, though; they also help to absorb and deflect heat. Framing this dramatic space and adding symmetry is a water feature, while faux-painted garage doors, climbing vines and custom urns lend a unique layered look.

For chilling by the pool with all the comforts of home within easy reach, there’s nothing quite like a cabana. This cozy Port Royal charmer creates splendid poolside living with a full bath, wet bar and independent audiovisual system. The exterior louvered mahogany doors close to provide privacy as needed or open entirely for casual entertaining, while the custom mahogany ceiling and delicate windows reflect the classic European provincial villa style of the main house. The cabana’s location offers a wide view of the property’s extensive landscaping, which was designed with an eye to elegance. A royal palm colonnade at the back of the residence is repeated along the water, while a lush tree canopy conjures a tropical feel on one side of the property. 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Enter the lush environs of this Old Naples property, and you’ll spot several botanical beauty spots, including bamboo, flower and Mediterranean gardens. But the real revelation is this tranquil seating area, which overlooks the home’s swimming pool. Added in 2012, this garden getaway is positioned for optimum shade, making it an ideal place to settle your senses and soak up a bit of natural serenity. The furniture was selected with a nod to the home’s classic interior, creating a gracious cohesiveness between indoor and outdoor living. What’s more, the space is eco-friendly: The pavers are custom concrete, including sand and reclaimed natural shell, made locally by Earthsurfaces.

This outdoor expanse takes all the clean refinement of contemporary design and folds it into the natural backdrop of Little Hickory Bay. The result is a pool that combines sleek lines with environmental ambience, while faithfully reflecting the aesthetics of the house. There’s only one bend in this geometrical pool, and it follows the home’s roofline curve. A graceful synthetic wood bridge leads guests to a seating area and beyond to the nearby bay and boat dock. The pool’s water feature bubbles with five fountains and is strategically placed by a fire pit, which creates a dramatic scene by night.

INSIDE OUT Photography by TOM HARPER
Stylish outdoor entertaining can create a bit of uncertainty, but this Mediterra home serves up the answers. Oversized pocket doors slide back and vanish completely when guests arrive, conveying the sense that the interior and lanai are simply one flowing, airy space. Enhancing this illusion is the porcelain floor tile, which appears uniformly throughout the interior and exterior; the pool decking is of a similar hue to create more continuity. Both indoors and out, accents from the same color palette add depth while emphasizing the spatial relationship. Finally, the black galaxy granite used for the interior and exterior fireplaces add a sightline between the two areas, tying it all together. Cindy says … WHITE SPACE The eye must have a resting space as it travels interior design. Don’t clutter with accessories—allow design to “breathe.” Rooms often have too much going on, so edit the unnecessary, unimportant and unused. BALANCING ACT Angled furniture and groupings rarely work and throw off a room’s balance. Placing a cabinet on a wall opposite a window balances weight in
e
legance. Sophistication. Balance. Simplicity. These are the cornerstones embraced by nationally acclaimed interior designer Cindy Christensen, A.S.I.D., who skillfully and judiciously works her magic into luxury home makeovers. Publications including Veranda, Better Homes & Gardens, Chicago Tribune, and Miami Home & Decor, along with cable channel HGTV, have showcased her natural gift for reinventing a home in a whirlwind one-day luxury makeover. Featured often on HGTV’s Decorating Cents, Christensen was one of the original designers who spearheaded the concept of home makeovers. Within the confines of a single day, she refashions a dwelling with the ease and grace of a sorceress. From intimate spaces to grand-scale projects, she tackles basic design challenges such as scale, proportion, balance and flow. Her style palette includes shades of white, which she weaves throughout a project; she dismisses the idea that an achromatic interior is boring, flat and unimaginative. Christensen (above) replaced a heavy wooden Chinese table with a lighter Swedish drop-leaf design (left), which highlights the white and cobalt porcelain bowl.

a room. Hang large mirrors over chests of similar size to counterbalance weight and add light and space. SIZE MATTERS Typical nightstands are too small and too low for beds and bedrooms. Instead, choose matching tables to balance weight and height. HIDE AND SEEK Shuffle furniture around while carefully editing your collection, and store unused items in closets instead of bureaus. EYE CANDY Design with fresh flowers, natural fabrics and old woods. this gives rooms a visual softness. Add white to your bed using machine-washable fabrics for a crisp, clean effect. Select one style of art for your home, because similar items are easy on the eyes. GO PRO Stay within one style or theme; many people mix styles and call it eclectic, but this is difficult to achieve and should be left to the experts. Hire a professional for makeover advice or staging, or even to revive a home with quick tips.

“To dispel the myth on makeovers, very simply and quickly, a home can be reinvented through changing up a room by shuffling things around in lieu of an entire home remodel project,” says Christensen. “So often, the number one mistake made by clients is that there is just too much going on in one space,” she says. “For best visual impact, eliminate what is not working—even if you love it and it was an inherited family piece. Simply moving furniture around and using pieces you love to complement a space instead of taking away from your home’s design can instantly enliven a room.” Whether she is staging a home for sale or simply reenergizing it with a clean, unified style, Christensen has a keen instinct for what works. “The beauty of the luxury makeover is that I draw a plan with the client’s existing furniture, carefully editing according to flow and balance, and depending on the scale of the client’s budget, I purchase pieces that create the biggest impact,” she says. Christensen glides from room to room, moving furniture and accessories around in a design ballet to achieve the best effect. Christensen’s process entails gathering design images from clients of their

In the dining room, Christensen created continuity with a table skirt and topper. An antique chair was added, while the existing ones were livened up with large pillows. The white canvas art connects to the fabric for a unified feel. Antique sconces change the space from small and fragmented to broad and expansive. lovely, were too heavy in her Naples home and were removed. “As a makeover specialist, I create unique, custom looks and give clients immediate gratification,” Christensen says. “Many people combine different styles in their home and call it eclectic; I help them define the style that emerges above the rest.” « NAPLESillustrated.com | OCTOBER 2013

A Royal
Affair
At her family’s sprawling estate in Port Royal, Jena Tipping married longtime sweetheart Bradley Crone in a rustic vintage paradise. We take you inside the nuptials for a glimpse at how the bride’s dream team pulled it all together. By DOROTHEA HUNTER SöNNE Photography by AUSTIN TRENHOLM
ISLAND TIME The wedding party crossed a red bridge to get to the island in the middle of the property’s lake where the ceremony took place, while guests looked on. Crystal chandeliers were a significant design element in the reception, including a striking piece that hung from the center of the altar constructed by Grace Lakes Florist.
BLUSHING BRIDE As the couple shared an intimate moment under a regal Tabebuia tree, Crone looked stunning in her blush-colored Monique Lhuillier gown. She tailored many of the wedding’s decor decisions to complement the dress.

CRYSTAL PALACE In total, 12 crystal chandeliers adorned various sections of the tent because the bride felt it embodied the essence of her rustic vintage look. Two were hung below 8-foot rings of 500 white dendrobium orchids and 350 white hydrangeas. The rings were built months in advance, and the team at Grace Lakes Florist worked from 4 a.m. onwards the day of the wedding to weave in the fresh blooms.

Nearly all of the linens came from Nuage Designs and Wildflower Linens and were customized for the bride. The high tables for the cocktail portion of the evening were blanketed with fabric that had cloth rose petals sewn to it, and in the main tent elements like Paloma lace runners (the lace pattern itself is a rose motif) were de rigueur.
“The choice was natural,” says Jena Tipping Crone, recalling the decision to have her April wedding in Naples. “I’m from Canada, but this is my second home.” The site of her nuptials is one of the most recognizable in town. The rolling 14.5 acres decorated with Eastern-accented buildings, including a large pond with black and white swans gliding about, has been in her family since her mom was a teenager. When its owner, her grandfather, prominent Canadian businessman Michael DeGroote Sr., learned of her engagement, he happily offered to open the gates this year for her expected 165 guests. “Getting married there was sentimental—it meant so much more than any hall,” says Crone, who met her husband, Bradley Crone, when she was a student at Florida Gulf Coast University. “My grandfather was generous enough to say I had the lay of the land, so I could put my full vision in place.”
SUGAR, SUGAR The Kakes by Karen team sculpted multiple strands and bands of sweet faux pearls throughout the four layers of the Almond Amaretto cake, plus hand-painted “lace” with café latte dust. The asymmetrical but balanced design came from Crone. “I just knew it would work,” she says.
COCKTAIL CULTURE The signature cocktail—limoncello, peach schnapps, peach lemonade, soda water and fresh lemon—was created at Crone’s bridal shower. Guests formed groups to create recipes, then Crone blind-tasted them to determine a winner.

STAGED FOR FUN The head table was on the opposite side of the dance floor from the stage where the band played. When CTO High Voltage left the tent at 12:30 a.m., most guests stayed for at least an hour longer, and the newlyweds and their inner circle lingered until 3. “Our goal was that we wanted all of our family and friends there, and we wanted everyone to have fun,” Crone says. “I think we accomplished that.”
FLOWER POWER Two arrangements—one perched high in a clear vessel and one close to the table with a crystal candelabra featuring high tapers—switched from table to table, but the basic elements stayed the same. White, ivory and blush roses intermixed with Manzanita branches and other soft-hued blooms. “For me, traditional centerpieces look too perfect. I wanted mine to cascade without looking messy,” Crone says.
LUMINOUS LOOK Acrylic chairs were chosen to stay consistent with the crystal look and infuse a modern touch. The event planner also used rectangular acrylic tables for the bridal party and close family. At the head table, the white orchid centerpieces were draped in strands of pearls. Votives in vases of varying heights with coils of ivy dotted the lace runner.

ALL SET Everything at the tables except for the flatware—the chargers, dishes, bowls and goblets—was premium Riedel glass. On top of the plates were custom-designed place cards that opened up to reveal a message to guests: A donation had been made to a children’s charity in each person’s name. For the American guests the funds supported St. Jude’s, while donations on behalf of the Canadian visitors went to Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario.
SEEING CLEARLY Circular menus fit directly under the peek-a-boo chargers, so between courses attendees would not have to guess what was coming next from Chef Sebastian Mazzotta. Highlights included butternut squash bisque with basil oil topped with cumin- and coriander-grilled shrimp, and prime sirloin with Malbec reduction served alongside roasted cipollini onions, steamed broccolini and a crab and corn saffron-infused risotto.

ARRIBA, PARTYGOERS! The nightcap included customized bottles of Patrón XO Café (a coffee liqueur with premium tequila) and hangover kits, including sleep masks and eye-cooling pads. Says Short, “I sometimes look back at the pictures and think, I still don’t believe I did that! The wedding represented everything you want to do as an event planner, but you don’t always have the chance to.”
Once the location was set, Crone’s grandfather introduced her to Margaret Short, a go-to in Naples for spectacular soirees. Short then quickly assembled 15 vendors (all local except the musicians), and they got to work on Crone’s self-styled “rustic vintage” theme for what they endearingly coined “the royal wedding,” a triple entendre for the neighborhood’s name, family involved and sheer scope of the task at hand. “This was the best wedding I’ve done, including my own—don’t tell my husband!” Short says. “I loved it because it wasn’t flashy. It had this simple, elegant feeling, but there was nothing simple about it. Everything was customized, and paying attention to the little things makes the biggest difference.” «

LOUNGE APPEAL Throughout the night, guests flowed back and forth between the tent and a bistro-light-covered outdoor area next to it. The bride wanted an eclectic mix of vintage sofas and armchairs to keep with her theme, and the company Party Time Rentals wound up buying many of the pieces just to fit her needs. The lounge also featured a cigar roller and a photo booth as more entertainment options.
ESTATE PLANNING Rather than have a typical cocktail hour, the newlyweds opted for an hour and a half, and guests mingled throughout the western end of the property. The award-winning Anna Wilson Trio from Nashville crooned country- and jazz-inflected tunes within earshot of the main house, and closer to the beach was a field of lawn games with croquet, horseshoes and a monogrammed cornhole set.

Q: What is your design inspiration? A: For me, design is inspired by three key factors. One is the fashion industry; textiles, color and fashion trends lead to interior design trends, which is why we are proud to bring the innovation of Ralph Lauren Home to our design center in Mercato. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel, from Manhattan to Malibu, from Paris to Milan. Europe is the cutting-edge source of design trends, but the more exposure you get to different customs and countries, the deeper your creative well. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Design is transitioning into a cleaner look and feel. Backgrounds are becoming much more light and neutral, using layers of texture. A punch of color comes with accessories, pillows, area rugs and art. Bringing in nature

and incorporating outdoor living is important. Bigger outdoor kitchens, patios and outdoor luxury items will continue to be the rage. The integration of technology with a refined design aesthetic is in demand, which is why Design West now offers the ultra-premium home cinema line brand Bang & Olufsen at our showroom in Mercato. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: We specialize in high-end residential interior design, floor planning, furniture, custom cabinetry, accessories and installation. From the concept stage through the entire building process, we provide turnkey design and project management. We have individual designers with varying styles and ideas. Collaborating as a cohesive team allows us to achieve award-winning results and provide outstanding value. This unique team approach results in creative solutions in tune with each client’s desires. Ruffino Cabinetry Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Our design inspiration changes from project to project. There are many factors that help in determining the final design, such as the homes architecture, surroundings and, most importantly, the client’s own taste.
Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Luxury cabinetry suited for every room in the home. From custom-tailored kitchens to monumental wardrobes, bathrooms and libraries, Ruffino Cabinetry is capable of taking on any request.
Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Clean and understated detailing is what most clients seem to be gravitating towards. EBL Interiors Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Our design inspiration has been the combination of the clean lines that originated in Europe in the 1960s and today’s manufacturing technology behind the premier building products we offer in our showroom. The latest kitchen designs by Snaidero or EP Porte’s line of distinctive interior doors from Italy illustrate my point perfectly. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: We see two majors trends. We have already seen the kitchen as part of the great room, but the future is the full integration of the kitchen with the living room— making it a seamless space. The other is the use of stylized doors. A door should not only provide privacy but also be part of a home’s architectural fabric.

Debbie DeMaria, ASID, IDS Vogue Interiors
Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Vogue’s award-winning designers view interior spaces as broad canvases offering endless possibilities for creativity. Our inspiration starts with our clients. We create designs that reflect their unique personal styles and aspirations. With that in mind, a piece of art, a swath of fabric, an architectural detail, textural elements or a unique color can inspire a complete design. We believe a well-designed room should please the eye, stimulate the mind, be welcoming and excite. Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: Homeowners are trending to open living spaces featuring transitional designs with contemporary twists, light wood tones and architectural details such as geometric ceiling designs. Neutral backgrounds that work with different furnishings and collected items are preferred, along with pops of color from fabrics, artwork and accessories. Various colors are being brought to life by mineral tones, especially metallic and sleek textures. Also prevalent are the vibrant tones of sea colors, golds, grays, taupes and tangerine. Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Whether it’s a commercial project or a private residence, Vogue’s licensed interior designers work with remodel and new-build clients and contractors from concept through completion to create and execute compelling designs. For more than three decades, Vogue has created luxurious, comfortable spaces in which to live, work and play—places where people feel warm, welcomed and at ease. We believe a glimpse into a home or business should be aesthetically pleasing, effortlessly functional and extraordinarily experiential.

he calendar says fall, but the thermometer insists it’s still summer. Our advice for beating the heat: a visit to Norman Love Confections, Naples, or Artisan Gelato by Norman Love, Fort Myers, for some frozen bliss. We’re nuts for the simply brilliant interpretation of the ice cream sandwich. The built-to-order frozen treat combines delicate crispy French macarons with dense, creamy Italian gelato in a distinctly American goody. “All the cookies taste the same,” says pastry chef John Cook, so choosing one color over another is merely for the visual appeal. Customization comes via the filling. The dark pink macarons may look fab flanking a slab of cherry vanilla gelato, but they can be filled with any flavor, such as straciatella, peanut butter or mango—or a fruit sorbetto for a dairy-free dessert fix. —Kat Smith

On Tap Naples Beach Brewery looks to quench the Paradise Coast’s thirst for local craft beer. By Stephen Brown
One Saturday afternoon in August, more than a dozen people had already gathered inside a small, nondescript brewery just minutes after it opened for the day. The Naples Beach Brewery, with its popular beer tastings and tours, has quickly emerged as a buzz-worthy standout among Neapolitans. Located in Naples’ industrial district and wedged between shutter manufacturers, the no-frills microbrewery is the first of its kind in town. When owner Will Lawson first opened in November 2012, he sensed it wouldn’t take long for the tours to catch on. Lawson first moved to Naples a decade ago from Michigan, when he noticed the lack of craft beers in local stores and around the Paradise Coast. He recalls feeling burnt out at the time, working at a golf course and dreaming of opening his own business with no idea what it would be. That Christmas, his wife bought him a home-brewing kit and the amateur hobby morphed into an allencompassing passion. Four years later, Lawson attended a prestigious brewing school, Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, which included a five-week stint in Munich. He ultimately returned to Naples with his wife to turn his passion for beer into a business— and fill the niche opportunity he spotted years earlier. “Naples has a sophisticated population,” says
“I have absolutely seen a desire for craft beer in Naples,” says Lawson, but in terms of a working brewery “it is a relatively new idea.”
Lawson, “and sophisticated people enjoy these types of craft beers. We’ll get people from their 20s to 60s and even 70s because they’re curious.” Today, the microbrewery is packed on tour days, supplies dozens of local bars and restaurants with its unique brews and plans to expand in 2014 to keep up with demand. Tours, including tastings, can take up to an hour as Lawson walks patrons through the brewing, fermentation and storage process. A Bavarian wheat beer, dubbed the Naples Beach Weizen, is one of six beers on tap. The unfiltered brew pours a hazy straw color, while the traditional Bavarian yeast strains give the beer a fruity, slightly sweet smell and taste. Other brews include rye, dark, amber and red ales—but the one that has bubbled up as most popular is the Mango Ginger Tripel, made with crystallized ginger and mango chunks. The flavor profile is deliciously balanced, not too sweet as one might suspect, and registers the highest in alcohol content (7.75 percent). It’s also the most expensive and complex to brew so it’s only available for tastings and not sold commercially yet. But that will change in the fall of 2014, when Lawson plans to open an estimated 5,000-square-foot facility—nearly four times the size of the current location. «

An intriguing new trend is simmering in the world of the cocktail culture—sous vide spirits infusions. What’s it all about? Here’s the 411. What It Is: Best translated as “under vacuum,” the sous vide method is simple. An ingredient is sealed in an airtight plastic bag and cooked in a water bath under low temperatures (usually 110-130 Fahrenheit) for a long period of time (as many as several days). The result tends to be a more intensely flavored food cooked consistently throughout. The venerable Troisgros in France is generally credited as the first restaurant to use the method commercially, and today it would be difficult to find a commercial kitchen without a sous vide machine. Why Use It: Because it works. Foods cooked sous vide are generally more richly flavored, if slightly lacking in texture. Its Effect on Spirits: For the current generation of cutting-edge mixologists, flavor is king. Bartenders who use the sous vide method to infuse spirits say the liquor has a richer, more vibrant taste. The technique is in its infancy and not yet widespread, largely because the equipment can cost several thousand dollars, so it’s not likely to be a toy many bar owners will buy. Is It Far-Fetched? Not at all. Infused spirits have been around for quite some time, but they reached their peak of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. It was rare to walk into a watering hole and not see a large glass container perched on the bar, filled with any fruit that was handy and plentiful marinating in five or 10 gallons of vodka. Many of these glassencased concoctions were beautifully arranged. Eventually, 122 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Who’s Using It: Some of the best bars in America, including The Aviary in Chicago, owned by revolutionary Michelin three-star Chef Grant Achatz. One restaurant that has incorporated the technique seamlessly into its cocktail program is Soma Sushi in Houston, part of the Azuma Group. The story is that one day, Beverage Manager James Watkins was struggling with a traditional spirit infusion when the chef looked at him and said, “Why don’t you just sous vide the damn thing?” In South Florida, mixologist Charles Steadman uses the method extensively at Lantana Jacks Bar & Grill in Lantana. He created a grapefruit-infused tequila for a Salty Chihuahua (a twist on a Salty Dog), a candy corn vodka for Halloween, and a Bloody Mary made with bacon, pickled onion and jalapeño-infused vodka. It’s a brave new world. «

such homemade infusions disappeared from bars because it’s tough to sell several gallons of pineapple or tangerine-flavored vodka. And companies like Van Gogh started making flavored vodkas that are less expensive and more convenient. Upsides and Downsides: Flavor aside, there are two main benefits to using a sous vide machine to infuse spirits. Unlike the old days when a large glass vessel was required, the new equipment can make small batches of an infusion, which leaves lots of leeway for seasonal cocktails and momentary inspirations. Also, unlike sous vide food preparation, which takes days, spirits infusions can be achieved in hours. Sous Vide Supreme, a company that claims to make “the world’s finest water oven,” offers models ranging from $319-$749, but buyers will have to spend another $799 for the firm’s ChamberVac Sealer. The process is far more labor-intensive than buying infused spirits, but customers will be spoiled in no time by the intensely flavorful results.
The Sous Vide Supreme is one of the top appliances—and one of the most expensive.

Balance Benefits of
F
Greens, Tees
By Jacob Steiner resh air, exercise and fun are great for your health, but what’s even better is when you can help improve the well-being of others at the same time. That’s why the 17th Tommy Bahama Coconut Classic, hosted by the Garden of Hope and Courage, is a winner all around. It tees off October 22 at the exclusive, tranquil and scenic Hideout Golf Club in Naples. The tournament, which will raise dollars both for the Garden and the Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County, is primarily intended for amateurs, says Garden of Hope and Courage Executive Director Amy Lane, although “we have had some pros who have participated in the past, including Peter Jacobson, Tom Lehman and Bobby Clampett. They’ve participated as friends of the charity,” she says. The festivities begin the night before with a special dinner featuring live music and a silent and live auction at Tommy Bahama, Naples. The party is included in the ticket price for the tournament, and players may bring guests for $75 each. The auction lots include golf and travel packages, special Tommy Bahama giveaways and more. According to Lane, last year’s tournament was a sell-out and raised $50,000 to support the Garden and the Children’s Advocacy Center. (gardenofhopeand courage.org)

Balance Saving soles
Step Up!
Repurpose your dust-gathering shoes by putting them on the feet of those in need: Charity Soles4Souls (soles4souls.org) gathers footwear from shoe companies and conducts collection drives around the country. recycling company Shoes for the Cure (shoes forthecure.com) rounds up new and used shoes for the less fortunate, as well as for surface material to build running tracks and tennis courts with the goal of “curing” the environment of the negative effects of waste. Swing by Estero’s Foot Solutions to drop contributions in bins for both causes. —M.K.
Choose the Right Shoes
We’re guilty of giving the occasional cold shoulder to comfort and strapping on those chic (and secretly numbing) high heels. But when it comes to exercise, choosing appropriate, comfortable shoes is a must. Chris Cole, a licensed pedorthist and the owner of Foot Solutions, Estero (footsolutions .com), shares his top tips for finding the right athletic footwear to help keep body and sole injury-free. ● Meet your feet: Before choosing a shoe, have a health professional assess your foot and gait mechanics with state-of-the art scanning technology. ● Know your sport: Every sport has its own requirements. Runners, for instance, need lightweight shoes with cushioning impact. For tennis players, shoes with great foot support are best for quick side-to-side movements. ● Re-create workout conditions: Foot swelling is common during exercise, so hit the shoe store right after the gym, court or road when your feet are largest to get the right size. For the perfect fit, try shoes on with the socks normally worn during workouts. ● Never settle for less: Make sure you can fully extend your toes when standing. Shoes must be comfortable from the moment you put them on because they won’t stretch. —Mina Kang

Sweet Salvation Looking for a healthy alternative to satisfy a runaway sweet tooth? Give Yonanas a try. This dessert-making machine transforms frozen fruit into a yummy treat without the added sugar and fat of ice cream. We’re not talking smoothies or sorbet—the machine blade grinds and emulsifies, creating a creamy texture similar to soft-serve ice cream. Bananas are the recommended base fruit for their consistency. “This type of treat is a great snack or dessert option for anyone, but would be especially fun for kids,” says local nutritionist and dietician Leslie Deason of Healthy Concepts Nutrition & Fitness. Yonanas offers numerous recipes online, and the maker can be purchased locally at Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and Best Buy, or online at Amazon and shop.yonanas.com. —O.L.

everyman Dutch-born artist Hanneke Beaumont’s enigmatic sulptures evoke universal questions about our existence. Deliberately nondescript, the figures could represent the everyman, pondering, “Why are we here?” The Baker Museum just opened a retrospective of more than 20 of her works in terracotta, bronze and iron, titled “Connected and Disconnected: The Sculpture of Hanneke Beaumont.” Some largescale drawings are also on display. Giving BACK
Jean Ann Lynch
Family Friend By christina wells
“We live in a
beautiful community and I am grateful every day that I can give a little back.
”
ROLAND SCARPA
One of the most basic and critical needs for babies is a clean diaper. Newborns can go through up to a dozen a day, and many moms don’t think twice about simply tossing a few more in the diaper bag. But for the working poor, the stark reality is one out of three moms can’t afford clean diapers, according to the latest study in the Journal of Pediatrics. The research just underscores Jean Ann Lynch’s mission. The Naples winter resident founded Baby Basics in Ridgewood, New Jersey, more than two decades ago while doing volunteer work for a church. The organization provides diapers and guidance to low-income, working families who do not receive government assistance. “What touched my heart was the fact that these people were working hard but still could not provide clean diapers for their children,” says Lynch, who also spent nine years as a teacher working with children from preschool to elementary school. Nearly a decade ago, Lynch expanded the program to Collier County, where 315 babies receive diapers at nine distribution points every month. So many people responded to the idea that Lynch went on to oversee the creation of new programs in Massachusetts, Vermont and Florida. She even put together a start-up kit for people interested in creating their own Baby Basics program. Currently, there are 14 programs operating in a dozen states, providing diapers to more than 900 babies every month. Since 1994, Baby Basics has distributed 2.5 million diapers to Southwest Florida families in need. “We live in a beautiful community and I am grateful every day that I can give a little back,” says Lynch, noting it’s a family affair. While Lynch currently serves as volunteer president of Baby Basics of Collier County, her two daughters, Alicia and Jennifer, are co-presidents of Baby Basics of Boston. Her husband, Dick, is president of Baby Basics National Development Corp., an umbrella organization for all the programs. And Lynch is not done yet. Her goal: a Baby Basics program in every state. “The best gift you can give to your community is the gift of yourself coupled with a vision and desire to make changes in the lives of those around you,” she says. «
