Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery Can Change Your Life Dr. Elizabeth Fox answers frequently asked questions. Plastic surgery is cutting-edge, exciting and life-altering. People are taking better care of their health and therefore living more productive, fulfilling and longer lives. This is why it is important that your outward appearance projects the vitality and youth that you feel on the inside. Join us on this rewarding journey and discover the difference plastic surgery will make in your life.
Q:
Dear Dr. Fox: The other day I picked my kid up from school and I heard one of his friends ask if I was his grandma. I was shocked, but took a long, hard, objective look at myself in the mirror. I don’t think I’m ready for a facelift yet, but I notice that some of the lines around my mouth and nose have definitely gotten deeper over the last few years. Is there anything other than a facelift that can be done about this?
A:
Surprisingly, not only is this one of the most common problems people come to see me for but it is also the easiest to address. You’ve probably noticed that many of the celebrities in Hollywood don’t seem to be aging at the same rate you are. It’s not because they’re not, it’s because they’re doing something about it. There are many types of fillers that you’ve heard of like juvederm, restilyne, collagen, etc., but in the case where you’re not ready yet for an early facelift, what I suggest is either radiesse or fat injections. Radiesse can be done quite easily in about half an hour with immediate results that last for about one year. Alternatively, if you are seeking a permanent solution, a fat injection is a very practical choice. From a cost perspective, fat injections are definitely more cost-effective than yearly fillers.
Q: A:
Dear Dr. Fox: As I am quickly approaching 60, I have wanted to take better care of myself. I’ve started exercising and have lost some weight, but now that I’ve lost the weight, it seems like I look older. Can you explain this to me? This is more common than you think. What has happened is that not only have you had a reduction in volume, but also a reduction in the supporting structures of your skin, or both. In order to improve this you need to elevate the tissues back to their previous locations and you have to reduce the excess skin. You may also need to restore volume in some areas of your face, be it Radiesse or fat injections, to reestablish a youthful appearance. This would be called a vertical facelift. As long as you elevate in the correct direction (vector) you can actually look better than before you lost your weight. Your goal should be to achieve a more youthful look, not the obvious plastic surgery look that you may have seen with some of the personalities on TV. When the right patient is coupled with the right surgeon the results can be remarkable.
Q: A:
Dear Dr. Fox: I had a facelift a number of years ago and I know that I’m going to need another one someday, but I’m trying to decide when is the best time to have it redone. I’m 72 right now. Well, this is the age that you now need to make a decision as to whether or not you are ever going to have another facelift. If you have decided to have one someday, then why not have it done when you can most enjoy it instead of waiting until you’re older? It may be more practical to optimize your appearance as young as you can. By deciding for surgery now, you will be able to enjoy the benefits for many years to come. The facelift experience today is much different that it was even a decade ago. I’ve see secondary facelifts heal in as little as a week. Any touch up that needs to be done later in life shouId be handled by fillers or fat injection.
Q:
Dear Dr. Fox: I’ve had three kids and after 12 years of marriage I now find that I’m only comfortable being with my husband with the lights off. How involved is a breast augmentation and does it help in my situation?
A:
What you are describing may actually be two problems. The first is that when you are breast feeding, your breasts enlarge and are heavier. As such, gravity will work on you. After you stop breast feeding the milk producing tissue goes away and you are left with a volume deficit as well. A simple breast augmentation is a great solution if you only have volume-loss issues. If you have both volume and gravity issues, then a breast lift with a breast augmentation can help you recapture the body that you had before you had kids. I have had many patients tell me that their husbands derived the benefit from the increased comfort and confidence of their new bodies.
I hope that I have answered all of your questions. Please direct any plastic surgery questions to: www.elizabethfoxmd.com or join us at our next seminar

Introducing the Brunello Cucinelli Men’s Collection at Marissa Collections.
From The publisher
For the Greater Good riving around town, it’s easy to spot numerous local landmarks bearing the names of those who provided the financial backing to help make them possible. A museum here, a hospital wing there … indicators of great generosity surround us. Without the kindness of these benefactors, some of these structures might never have broken ground at all. Still, my thoughts also turn to those who choose to give without fanfare or in smaller amounts. For every grant to fund construction of a library, there are countless others giving just-in-time donations to food banks and free clinics. Our community wouldn’t be the same without both styles of benevolence. When I talk with CEOs and board members of nonprofit organizations, as I frequently do on social occasions or at formal fundraising events, many of them share quiet concerns that affluent donors sometimes feel obligated to wait on the sidelines until there’s an immediate need for a sizable contribution to build a children’s camp, outfit a performing arts school or do anything else of a scope that might merit naming rights. They insist this reticence usually isn’t about ego, but more about a belief that only a handful of people have the resources to step in when the stakes are huge. They pick their spots. I can appreciate that line of reasoning, but there is another, equally valid approach. Americans are generous people. Last year, philanthropic giving in the United States totaled $290.9 billion, with more than 72 percent of that figure coming from individual donors. This fall, however, looks to be particularly critical for nonprofit organizations across the board. The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently reported that two out of three Americans are feeling pressure to cut back on charitable giving for the foreseeable future— which could be a sign of trouble for organizations, many of which had just begun to recover from declining donations in 2008 and 2009 with a modest 2 percent increase in 2010. Considering this, now might be a good time for more of us to diversify our giving strategies. It can be just as impressive—and certainly have an appreciable impact—to distribute our generosity among several good causes rather than make one major contribution to a single recipient. That said, I’d like to offer some words of encouragement during this month of Thanksgiving: We all can make a broad difference in these uncertain times with relatively minimal effort. We don’t have to fund buildings to substantially affect our community—although there’s certainly a place for that type of giving—but we can, and should, take equal pride in benevolence of any magnitude.

FOREVER BETTER
From The Editor
MAP QUEST eople who have been in Naples for a long time already know what an incredible place they have chosen. Although Naples shares its moniker with an Italian city and has name familiarity in other places, in some ways it doesn’t have the instant celebrity recognition worldwide of other Florida destinations like Palm Beach, Miami or Orlando. Some would argue that that’s okay, as it leaves more to enjoy for those of us who have discovered Naples’ rich natural beauty, award-winning shopping and friendly residents. Sharing, though, is what Naples is all about. Philanthropically, Naples is on the radar of many of the nation’s biggest nonprofit groups, which look to the success of the Naples Winter Wine Festival and other events. It seems that each year another national charity opens an office in Naples, or puts a fundraiser on the community’s already crowded social calendar. To keep up, consult our annual Naples Charity Register. It features listings of the area’s charity events, along with stories on corporate generosity; what’s new and innovative for the upcoming season; how funds raised benefit nonprofits; profiles and advice from some of the area’s charitable givers; and style notes for gala-goers. In addition, we will feature updated information on events in each issue of Naples Illustrated, as well as on our website, naplesillustrated. com. Throughout the year, we introduce some of the area’s philanthropists in Giving Back, this month featuring Joe and Dee Zednick, page 136. Culturally, the community has always sought to provide rich art, music, dance, theater and museum offerings through homegrown initiatives. The Naples Philharmonic Center, the von Liebig Art Center, and centers in Marco Island and Bonita Springs have risen from the area’s intense interests. Last year, the Naples Botanical Garden opened, the culmination of a small group’s dream to create a world-class garden. It will be joined in 2012 by two new top-drawer destinations, the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s expanded and renovated campus. Add to those openings the annual offerings of theater, music, art and dance, and Naples provides noteworthy cultural experiences. Check out what’s on the horizon in our annual seasonal preview, page 70. In addition, we keep the community calendar updated on our website and within our monthly pages. One could ponder which came first: Naples’ myriad creative outlets, or the area’s abundant creative souls. No matter; Naples is blessed with both. Artist Jackie Morelisse has been infusing her own creative pursuits with connections to the area’s cultural landscapes, resulting in bright, happy environments, ranging from her own home to the area’s stages and children’s projects. See some of her creations on page 78. With all of the season’s galas and cultural events, it’s no wonder that fashion is entwined beautifully in both. The latest designs are stylishly interpreted at fashion landmarks throughout the community, with many lending a hand to charities. See photos from the season’s first party, Fashion’s Night Out at Waterside Shops, page 28, plus fall fashion for women on page 60, and men, page 84. As always, it’s an exciting season ahead. This issue provides a condensed preview. Keep Naples Illustrated, the Naples Charity Register and naplesillustrated.com as your navigational tools all year.

YouFit’s concept is simple; it offers a workout in a nonintimidating atmosphere at a reasonable price, with no contracts or salespeople in sight. YouFit doesn’t offer amenities many don’t use, like babysitting, pools, classes or instructors, so the monthly fee is just $10 ($19 for all-clubs access). The gym features top-line weight machines, cardio equipment and free weights. Berks notes that YouFit clubs are very green, and not just in the lime hue of the decor. After being inspired by the film An Inconvenient Truth, Berks designed YouFit with highly energy-efficient lighting, maintenance-free building materials and shock-absorbing floors created with recycled tires and Nike “grind” (a.k.a. old sneakers), investments that will pay off in the long run. —K.S. 34 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
On the Whole Transcendent Fitness, Naples, centers on holistic health, not just exercise, because factors like water consumption, hours of sleep, and toxins in the body significantly affect the quality of a workout. Clients keep a journal of energy levels, eating habits and sleep patterns to help the staff customize workouts, recommend behavior modifications and create an appropriate nutrition program. Transcendent Fitness offers extensive personal training programs based on individual fitness needs geared toward total body transformation and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. As head trainer and owner Micah West says, “Through exercise we create stress for the body. The body then has to adapt to the stress, or it breaks down.” The fitness studio also offers group kettlebell classes and Naples Beach Body Boot Camp. —Saxon Eastman

FLOWER POWER
Remco van Vliet is a flower and event designer from Holland who serves as event designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the designer of the bouquets in the museum’s Great Hall. His love of floral design is so great he started the Dutch Flower School, and he appears often at garden clubs and botanical gardens. Van Vliet will speak at the Naples Botanical Garden’s Hats in the Garden November 9. —Kathy Becker
Christian Oth
n NI: Why is it important to share your love of flowers? RV: America doesn’t have a flower school. I grew up in Holland, a third-generation designer. We studied seven years to be a master florist, the same as doctors or surgeons. In Holland, everyone gives everyone flowers. In America, you bring wine when you are a guest, half of which you drink yourself. n Do you garden? I live in Manhattan, so I don’t have a garden. In Holland I would help with my mother and my grandmother. I work with my brother at his home. It’s like meditation. I like raking leaves into big piles. It gets my mind off the craziness of the city. n Would you like to pass your love to the next generation? I have a five-year-old son. The flower business is hard, hard work—just dealing with Mother Nature. Just this morning, I didn’t get several hundred roses I was expecting. It’s a very stressful business. If my son wants to take over the business one day, that’s great. If my son wants to pursue a different profession with less stress, I’ll support him in whatever he chooses.

Beginning in 1971 with the ironically named Wurst Place, chef Tony Ridgway took his love of food and people and built a long, happy relationship with Naples. His 40 years of success in the volatile restaurant industry is remarkable, especially in an area where change has been one of the few constants during the last four decades. “I’ve been a major player in the restaurant growth in Naples,” Ridgway says. “We were setting trends before Naples knew what food trends were. I’d like to think we’re still setting trends. One major achievement that is confirmed by our loyal customers has been to never sacrifice quality.” His early entrée on the scene, the Chef’s Garden on Fifth Avenue South, moved to the space where Ridgway Bar & Grill and Tony’s Off Third are now on Thirteenth Avenue South. In the 1980s Chef’s Garden and the more casual Truffles upstairs were the place to see and be seen among the social set. Like all of Ridgway’s ventures, the restaurants thrived, dishing up creative cuisine and pouring interesting vintages from an unusually astute selection of wines. Sukie Honeycutt, who arrived on the scene in 1979 and has been a partner of Ridgway’s since 1981, added her finely tuned wine sense. Her innovations included adding a wines-by-the glass list before it was common. Her wine acumen continues to grow through her travels and relationships with the world’s great winemakers, and has been key to the restaurants’ sophistication. Today, in addition to Ridgway Bar & Grill and the Tony’s Off Third wine and pastry bar next door, Ridgway and Honeycutt operate Bayside Seafood Grill & Bar in the Village on Venetian Bay. They continue to innovate and update, recently starting up a virtual wine shop on TonysOffThird.com, and adding an outdoor bar in the courtyard next to Ridgway, with live entertainment Thursday through Saturday. As for future restaurants, though, Ridgway says, “Sukie and I continually turn down new projects. Why open something new when you can easily add sales by working to improve what you have? … Things don’t always have to be new, they can simply become better. We are looking to find ways to get the younger generation to Third Street. We need to educate people that quality is worth the effort.” Ridgway’s fortieth anniversary calls for major celebration. There will be festivities at Ridgway and Tony’s Off Third on November 4, and on November 5, the block will be closed off for a street party, where the food and fun are guaranteed to be first-rate. —Kat Smith

Shelly Stayer has long been infatuated with cupcakes. She began working on perfecting her technique after first baking cupcakes in an ice cream cone for a party in Wisconsin 15 years ago. “No one would eat them because they thought they were ice cream and it was cold out,” she recalls. “My kids each ate six, they felt so bad.” Grace Bolen, a Wharton Business School graduate and former software consultant, gave up her high-travel career to perfect her cupcake prowess in her hometown. Put the two together, mix well, and you get Grace & Shelly’s Cupcakes, opening soon on Fifth Avenue South. Stayer partnered with Bolen—who started Gracie’s Cupcakes in Naples in 2009 and another store in Fort Myers last year—to indulge her cupcake obsession while taking the business to the next level. “We are expanding to more locations, doing delivery and creating new items,” Stayer says. The cupcakes already have been named the official dessert of the Golisano Children’s Museum. Stayer spent the summer scoping out retail spaces, while Bolen worked on perfecting the 110-calorie Twiggy cake pop. —Kathy Becker

There’s more to enjoy at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar than succulent steaks and an impeccable wine list. The restaurant regularly holds special events including wine dinners, hands-on cooking demos, themed nights and more. “Have fun. That’s what it’s all about,” says Operating Partner Al Romeo. Highlights this month include the latest in the Fleming’s lunchtime cooking class November 9, dedicated to holiday fare. Attendees watch and participate as Chef Partner Dave Gossett and his team show how to create several dishes, all of which the class gobbles up with a glass of wine selected by Wine Director Will Mattrey. Also, Mattrey has planned a wine dinner November 16 with some twists. A surprise guest is scheduled, and the winemakers from Dierberg Winery and Three Saints Wines will educate and interact with guests via Skype about the wines being served. Another unusual element will be the absence of that California mainstay, Cabernet Sauvignon, because Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah are in the starring roles. —K.S.

On the Radar The season brings interesting new eateries. Osetra Champagne Caviar Bar was opened on Fifth Avenue South by Milos Simovic and Anthony Chinaglia (upgrading from his previous place, Mr. Five), serving fine wines, seafood, chocolates and other delicacies, plus caviar. Osetra will serve luxe fare until 2 a.m. More to watch for: L’étoile on 11-11-11 in North Naples, offering fine French cuisine; Pate’s House of Prime Rib, serving the hearty cut from a custom trolley and classic sides like Yorkshire pudding in an English pub atmosphere at Coastland Center; and the second Toast of Naples, serving breakfast and lunch in the Shoppes at Vanderbilt. Fabrizio Aielli of Sea Salt will debut Barbatella on Third Street South, a Mediterranean-influenced, rusticflavored restaurant that will evoke the spirit of Italy’s culinary regions. —K.S.

Viva la Revolución Tequila, Mexico’s signature spirit, wins over America.
Tequila Don Julio
By Mark Spivak
52 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
There’s a revolution brewing in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and it has nothing to do with social unrest or affairs of state. Jalisco is where tequila is produced. In the area surrounding the town of Tequila itself, the soil is perfect for the cultivation of blue agave. The agave plants are shredded and pressed, and the juice is first fermented and then distilled to make one of the world’s most popular spirits. Tequila suffered from a negative image until very recently. It was the drink of college fraternity houses and low-end bars, and most of the tequila consumed in this country was of inferior quality. The white, unaged version was frequently downed in shot form, accompanied by a pinch of salt and a slice of lime, and a great deal of the “aged” tequila sold in America was actually flavored with caramel to
simulate the appearance of barrel aging. In the superior category of tequila (those made with 100% agave), there are basic gradations: blanco or plata (unaged), reposado (two months to one year in barrel), añejo (one to three years) and extra añejo (more than three years in cask). Tequila’s status has changed radically in the past decade as a result of the appearance of super-premium brands such as Patrón. Its white tequila, Patrón Silver, is double-distilled and then filtered to produce a clean, fresh taste. It is targeted toward upscale vodka drinkers, and with a price tag of $40, it’s not likely to show up in fraternity houses anytime soon. Other white tequilas aimed at the same market niche include Herradura Blanco ($35) and the triple-distilled Sauza Tres Generaciones Plata ($45). There’s been a considerable change in the
extra añejo category as well. It’s not unusual for tequila lovers to spend $80 to $100 for these bottles, and some of the top examples rival the best cognacs in price and complexity. José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia ($130) is aged five years in a combination of French and American oak; each bottle is dated, numbered and sealed in wax. Don Julio Real, made in a special still and aged for three to five years, sells for $350. Cuervo’s top blends, such as the 1800 Colección ($1,600) and 250 Aniversario ($2,500) can compete with the top spirits in the world. These tequilas are best savored in a snifter, without additions or distractions. Locally, the tequila revolution has arrived with the opening of two new restaurants. Blue Agave Tequila Bar & Grill, in Naples Towne Centre, is a partnership between Judy Barney and Executive Chef Arturo Perez Jr. Barney is co-owner of Arturo’s Italian Res-

taurant on Marco Island, along with Arturo Perez Sr. The mix of classic Mexican cuisine and Tex-Mex provides a background for the selection of more than 50 different tequilas, which cost from $8 to $35 per shot. There’s a creative choice of margaritas as well. Located on Vanderbilt Beach Road, Agave Southwestern Grill is the latest concept from Don and Angela Smith, the couple behind Angelina’s Ristorante in Bonita
Springs. The menu combines elements of Mexican, Spanish and Native American cuisines under the direction of chef Thomas Rieman. More than 150 tequilas are offered, which are displayed throughout the restaurant and featured in a striking 12-foot tequila tower. The menu provides information on the aroma and taste of the spirits, and provides a unique overview of tequila for novices and connoisseurs alike. u

pursuits First Class SEEING GREEN The first St. Regis in the Caribbean brings a new level of luxury to Puerto Rico. By Daphne Nikolopoulos
Ecotourism has become such an overused term that it is refreshing to come across the real deal—a resort, for example, that has committed to the rigors of becoming an Audubon Internationalcertified Gold Signature Sanctuary, protecting a fragile ecosystem while offering guests the topmost luxury. The green vision of the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort in Puerto Rico goes well beyond asking guests to reuse towels or offering energy-saving lightbulbs. The resort, which opened last year on the island’s pristine Bahia Beach, has been designed, constructed and maintained according to Audubon International’s strict standards regarding wildlife conservation—a big deal considering the breadth of the site’s native species of avifauna, sea turtles, manatees and fish—and habitat enhancement. The resort’s intricate Natural Resource Management Plan addressed everything from storm-water capture to the creation of an on-site plant nursery to perpetuate reforestation of the 483-acre property. Walk around the grounds, and you feel like you are in a nature preserve.

The Plantation House
It’s almost hard to believe that within this pristine paradise is an iconic luxury hotel with such amenities as a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, a Remède Spa and golf by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The St. Regis Bahia Beach, the first St. Regis in the Caribbean, was built with two things in mind: the environment and the guest experience. As is typical of the St. Regis, the latter is uncompromised. The guest rooms and
suites offer Kodak-moment views of Bahia Beach and the El Yunque National Forest. The famed butler service, which is central to the St. Regis experience, allows suite guests to travel without staff, as everything is seen to by a personal butler. St. Regis butlers seamlessly take care of the small details, such as packing and unpacking, pressing, drawing a bath or delivering morning beverages along with a wake-up call. The Jean-Georges restaurant, Fern, nods to native cuisine but elevates it. Situated on the second floor of the Plantation House, with floor-to-ceiling doors that open up to a balcony overlooking the Atlantic, the restaurant is a modern interpretation of regional cuisine. The team of chefs, under the supervision of the master, procures locally sourced fish and produce, and prepares them in the haute-cuisine fashion Vongerichten has become known for.

One of the biggest surprises is the spa. At first glance, the building looks modest. It isn’t the kind of grand sanctuary with soaring ceilings and massive water features we see in so many luxury resorts—but the feeling it imparts is incomparable. The seven massage villas are situated around a courtyard with a reflecting pool and lush garden. Doors open to embrace the outdoors for a feeling of utter peace and relaxation. The Remède treatments are based on Puerto Rican traditions. One of the most blissful is Queen Loiza’s Royal Treatment, which incorporates a sugar scrub, an invigorating Vichy shower, and a cellulite-reducing and circulation-stimulating massage with 24-karat gold shimmer oil. The St. Regis Bahia Beach is a jewel among its surroundings. And, considering how breathtaking the surroundings are, that’s saying a lot. stregis.com/bahiabeach u

CALLING 911 An all-new Porsche 911 arrives in February, but the king-of-the-hill Turbo S will keep on delivering the biggest thrills. BY HOWARD WALKER
Think of it as the automotive equivalent of wisps of chalkywhite smoke wafting from the Vatican chimney. For the millions of Porsche fans around the globe, the arrival of an all-new Porsche 911 is nothing less than a religious experience. If you are a Porsh-a-ista, you’ll already know the new specs by heart—15 more horsepower for the Carrera S, bringing the tally to a nice round 400; the world’s first seven-speed manual gearbox; 14 percent better fuel economy; and all four wheels pulled, Play-Dohlike, farther apart for even greater glued-to-the-asphalt handling. Grown men are already waiting expectantly in line, like teens queuing for Lady Gaga tickets, to be first to have this seventhgeneration 911 in their driveway. Early cars arrive in February with a sticker starting at $82,100. But for all the salivating and heart-palpitating expectation, I hate to break the news that, despite its extreme-ish makeover, this newcomer still isn’t the ultimate 911. For me, that honor continues to go to—drum roll please—the big-bang 911 Turbo S. 58 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
A week spent in the company of this sultan of speed only reinforced the true awesomeness of this 530-horsepower, twin turbocharged, all-wheel drive $162,000 firefox. But with the arrival of the all-new 911, isn’t this Turbo S yesterday’s hero, relegated to littering up dealer lots, waiting for fire sale discounts and free-iPad-with-every-one offers? That’s not the way Porsche engineers work. They take their sweet time developing new models, so the current Turbo S is slated for at least another year’s worth of production. For someone not known for exactly embracing change—I still have a Motorola Razr flip-phone and like my chinos with pleats—that’s just fine with me. For here is one of the most volatile, most exhilarating rides you could ever ask for. Work it right, making use of its bottle-rocket “launch control” software to catapult you off the line, and you can run zero-to-60 in a stupid-fast 3.1 seconds; any faster and you’d risk detached retinas and your “outie” turning into an “innie.”
Yet this is only half the performance story. Come up behind a slo-mo SUV or languid Lexus on a long stretch of two-lane blacktop, pull back twice on the sevenspeed twin-clutch PDK’s paddle shifters, floor the throttle and feel the warp-speed, beam-me-up-Scotty thrust of 516 poundfeet of torque. But I lie. There’s actually a third half—if that’s possible—to the Porsche’s performance story: everyday drivability. Unlike so many hard-edged supercars where daily driving is like going 10 rounds with Sugar Ray Leonard, the Turbo S is a pussycat. Just leave the automatic in “drive” and it’ll glide contentedly in stop-go traffic with hardly a peep from the flat-six nuclear powerplant hanging out the back. The steering is light and precise, the ride won’t beat you up and on the highway, you’ll average 25 to the gallon.
increases the turbo boost and delivers even quicker transmission shifts. Ask it nicely, and it might even mop your brow. Of course you need a proper racetrack to come even remotely close to exploring the handling limits of this magical machine. Don’t worry. Your average interstate on-ramp will let you revel in the Turbo’s all-wheel drive traction and the standard
Porsche Active Suspension Management system that makes minute millisecond adjustments to the suspension to optimize the handling. Yes, you can wait till next fall for the allnew Turbo S to land. And there’s no doubt it’ll be worth the wait. But with a car this good, life’s too short to wait around. Instant gratification is a wonderful thing. u
And the cozy cabin is a masterpiece of simplicity and style. Here, seats hold you like a big hug from an old friend, and the driving position is as close to perfection as you can get. Then there are all the little touches of luxury, like gorgeous two-tone leather and Alcantara trim, a thumping Bose surround sound stereo and a timing chronograph smack in the middle of the dash that I’d give anything to wear on my wrist. But if you’re searching for Turbo S nirvana, find yourself a piece of twisting blacktop—and you may have to go to Georgia to find it—punch the “Sport” button and enjoy. The button pushing instantly stiffens the shocks, sharpens the throttle response, NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | november 2011 59

Two’s Company International Fine Art Expositions (IFAE) brings not just one, but two prestigious art fairs to the area in 2012. The second annual Naples International Art & Antique Fair will showcase 60 to 70 of the world’s finest art, antique, and jewelry dealers in the newly renovated Naples International Pavilion. Last year’s exhibitors came from not only Naples and Palm Beach, but from France, Germany, Italy and Israel as well. Additionally, last year’s fair made multimillion dollar sales and earned a spot as one of the top art fairs in the United States. If one fabulous fair isn’t enough, IFAE is also presenting Art Naples, a contemporary art fair that features more than 45 international art dealers varying from established museum-collected artists to promising newbies. In addition to a high-quality lineup of galleries exhibiting, the fair also offers a daily lecture and panel series. This year’s Naples International Art and Antique fair is February 24-28, with a preview February 23. Art Naples is March 23-26, with a preview March 22. (ifae.com) —Megan Goldman

ARTS CENTER H H H H H
MOST WATCHED One of the biggest changes on the cultural scene in Naples is spotlighted at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts. After 29 years, Myra Janco Daniels, the founder and CEO of the Phil, retired. Daniels began supporting a fledgling chamber orchestra, and built her dream into a $127 million arts complex that includes a resident orchestra, a performing arts hall, an art museum and an arts education center. Succeeding Daniels is Kathleen van Bergen, who since 2008 served as artistic and executive director of The Schubert Club in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Schubert Club presents concerts at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and manages a museum dedicated to the evolution of the keyboard. Van Bergen was also vice president of artistic planning for The Philadelphia Orchestra, and vice president and director of artistic administration for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. She has a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the Eastman School of Music and an executive administration degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. NI asked her for some reflections during her first weeks on the job. NI: What strengths do you bring to the position? What is your vision for the Phil? KV: My strengths include a commitment to collaboration, both internally and externally, and a belief in the power of the arts to shape the community. My vision for the Phil is that it touches every member of our community. Your background is music, while Daniels’ strength is in art. Will that affect future plans?
Kathleen van Bergen, new CEO of the Philharmonic Center for the Arts
Having spent more than 10 years working for some of our country’s greatest orchestras, I am looking forward to celebrating the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and sharing its relevance with our community. Future plans for the Phil may involve selecting a few points during the season to align the performing arts with the visual arts. After all, we consume art through many entry points, and one of the most exciting aspects of the Phil’s programming is its diversity. How do you take the Phil’s legacy into the future? I am excited to lead an organization with a great legacy, yet one that is still so young. Leading an organization into the future is a balance of respect for the past and a vision of relevance for the future. It can be very rewarding work to help define the role of the arts in the community, and I am honored to accept the responsibility. This year, the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida will mark 10 years of bringing history to Naples residents and students. As part of the museum’s tradition of education, it will present three exhibits in 2012. Featured January 5-31 will be Faces of Anne Frank: Past and Present, featuring the artwork of Myra Roberts, who attempted to capture the sorrow of Frank’s life in her oil paintings, as well as stories from Southwest Florida Holocaust survivors gleaned from Fort Myers-based journalist Ella Nayor. The second exhibit, Painting the Irena Sendler Story, February 6 to March 2, tells the story of former social worker Irena Sendler, who provided aid to many sick and dying Jews in the largest ghetto in Warsaw. The third exhibit March 12-April 6, Desaparecidos: A Tribute to Argentina’s Disappeared, will feature the photography of Sylvia Horwitz, who photographed images of mothers protesting the kidnapping of their children during Argentina’s Dirty War. The Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center (CAPA) has been bringing community arts groups to the stage since 2004. Now the arts support group hopes to create a permanent home, raising funds to build a performing arts center to create an affordable, accessible and available flexible space for artists. Bayshore will begin its season with the Second Annual Jazz Series, Jazz in the Park, featuring popular local jazz artists the third Sunday of each month November through April at Sugden Regional Park. Also coming up is CAPA’s Erich Kunzel Concert Series, named in honor of the group’s late former president, who conducted both the Cincinnati Pops and the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. The monthly concert series starts in December and continues through May at Edison State College Collier Campus. Also, January 28 and 29, CAPA will present the Festival of Arts at Sugden Regional Park. Headlining the festival will be Naples’ own Casey Weston, a recent finalist from the initial season of hit TV show The Voice. Festival highlights include a variety of food vendors, an art show of juried artists, and musical performances. Proceeds from all events will go toward the future construction of the Cultural & Performing Arts Flex Center. (bayshorecapa.org) —Saxon Eastman
In 2011, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida celebrated raising $38.5 million to support and endow Conservancy programs. Part of that funding covers renovation and construction of new LEED-certified buildings, including the newly renovated Nature Center set to open in January 2012. New buildings on the campus include the Eva Sugden Gomez Environmental Planning Center, and the von Arx Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. Renovated buildings include the Dalton Discovery Center, the Eaton Conservation Hall and the Ferguson Interactive Learning Laboratory. In addition, the public entrance to the Conservancy will be changed. This new entrance, Smith Preserve Way, opens access to the Conservancy Nature Center from Goodlette-Frank Road. All of the campus renovations are expected to be completed by the end of 2012. (conservancy.org)
The Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples will open in February 2012, a stateof-the-art children’s museum first envisioned in 2002 by Allyson Loos. Exhibits were created through “Dream Catching” sessions with area children, and through the vision of children’s museum specialist Mary Sinker and exhibit designer Jack Rouse Associates. The museum’s centerpiece is a realistic banyan tree with a tree house and cubbies in the roots. Other play and learning experiences span farm to beach. Innovative exhibits include “water,” where “fish” will scatter upon movement, a real frozen igloo, trees that will morph through the seasons, ending in raking leaf piles, and an Everglades exhibit with sounds, smells, mist and a moving alligator. In addition to being fun, exhibits were created to meet Florida’s Sunshine State curriculum standards, and are accessible for all. Museum programs will include community festivals, summer camp, after-school programs, art classes, field trips, outreach programs, parenting workshops, preschool groups and more. The museum itself will be a LEED-certified green building, with wind turbines, solar panels, live green roofs and other green building features. (cmon.org)

Joint Venture In any community, collaboration can lead to great success. Opera Naples teams up with TheatreZone to present Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern classic Show Boat to Naples November 5 and 6. Steffanie Pearce, founder and artistic director for Opera Naples, and Mark Danni, the producing artistic director of TheatreZone, have been contemplating collaboration for years. They both moved from New York to Naples around the same time 10 years ago, and have been searching for a project. When Danni’s wife, a Broadway dancer and choreographer, suggested Show Boat, they knew they had found the perfect choice. Set against a musical score by Jerome Kern, classic songs such as “Ol’ Man River” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” address racial plot themes while retaining a lighthearted air. The show will be staged in the Naples High School Auditorium. In addition to Show Boat, Opera Naples’ season includes the familyfriendly Hansel and Gretel December 16 and 18, performed by participants in the young artist program; Don Giovanni January 20 and 22; Faust February 24 and 26; and Eugene Onegin May 14 and 17. Artist Jackie Morelisse celebrates inventiveness—in her home, her charitable pursuits and her own art. Her garden features two sculptures she made recently after taking a welding class. In her car are giant papier-mâché flowers donated to her by an out-of-business event planner, which are destined for a children’s theater costume warehouse she’s creating. Her Naples lakefront home showcases art, her own and the work of other artists she admires. The decor also features treasures she and her husband, Henk, collect in their travels to exotic locations like Costa Rica, Bali, the Dutch Antilles, and other places that inspire her own paintings. Indeed, Morelisse finds inspiration all around her, including her recycling bin. In October, she created giant recycled “science experiments” for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Boo at the Bronx Zoo. During the summer, she taught children’s set design and recycled art classes for the Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs. For Gulfshore Playhouse, where she has designed costumes and original paintings in previous seasons, she created

a set with recycled material for the group’s STAR student program’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. “I like what I do to have importance,” she says. “I like to be useful, to have meaning.” To that end, Morelisse is decorating actor Tim Conway’s martini glass for the November 10 Celebrity Martini Glass Auction to benefit the Naples International Film Festival. On behalf of the von Liebig Art Center, she will embellish a giraffe to be auctioned to benefit the Naples Zoo in 2012. For the Bonita Springs Literacy Council, she will sell jewelry she made using beads she found during her travels. Morelisse’s use of recycled materials grows out of her desire to be happy and healthy. “I like color; I like happy,” she says. 82 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

“I’m not preaching. I’m not trying to change people, but to show better habits and ideas by doing things in a better way. I just don’t stand and do one thing all the time. I like to evolve.” Her home of 15 years has evolved too. Once a small one-story house, she and Henk have renovated through the years to add a second story. Cabinets were refurbished and niches added to display treasures. Several years ago, the couple built a separate studio for her workspace. “I have fun remaking things,” Morelisse says. “It’s the process. Something always changes when you come here.” One example is a shadow box she designed to display artifacts—like broken Delft pottery, old coins and tools—that her Dutch husband found as a child and kept in a jar. She surprised him by making his treasures artwork. When Morelisse returned from a trip to Egypt, she created her own interpretation of the art she saw. During a stint as an interior designer, she found some columns that she enhanced with faux painted mirrors and arches and added them to her dining room. Henk got in the spirit with a painting reminiscent of primitive cave art, while sculptures and paintings by others are also displayed. “I’m appreciative of other artists,” she says. “I’ve gone to art shows for years.” Her own art is changing as a result of experimentation with cubism, using multiple canvases and new media, including welding. In between her serious work, Morelisse finds entertainment in projects like crafting a crab costume out of orange bathrobes, or she raids her recycling bin to create fiveminute robots for her children’s theater and art classes. “With kids’ stuff, it’s more entertaining when it’s quirky and wrong,” she says. “One show, we made a big syringe out of water bottles with a straw. Where else were we going to get a syringe for a kids’ show?” u NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2011 83

The Naples International Film Festival is back, ready to unreel great films of 2011 from around the world. The festival will screen documentaries and short films and hold question and answer sessions with filmmakers November 3-6. NIFF kicks off with a red-carpet opening night film screening at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, and films will be screened at Silverspot Luxury Cinema at Mercato. For more information, visit naplesfilmfest.com. To benefit the festival, Neapolitan Brenda Melton has planned her second Celebrity Martini Glass Auction. Martini glasses decorated by renowned artists and signed by celebrities such as Bill Clinton, Prince Albert of Monaco, Loretta Lynn and Jane Seymour will be auctioned off to benefit the festival. A total of 45 celebrity glasses will be auctioned during a fabulous evening November 10 at the Philharmonic Center. —Saxon Eastman

Ready Oar Not The Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival November 3-6 brings residents and tourists alike out into Florida waters to enjoy some natural beauty. Presented by Canoe and Kayak magazine, the festival is rated in the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for 2011. It consists of a boatload of fun activities for participants to enjoy along the sandy shorelines of Southwest Florida. While the festival attracts many paddling enthusiasts, there are plenty of options for novices, including guided trips, demonstrations, and on-water instruction. Expert paddlers can compete in two races, the Calusa Classic and Calusa Dash, and there will be a catchand-release fishing tournament and stand-up paddleboard activities. In addition, land activities include green-themed events, speakers, a film festival, evening socials, live music and a photo contest with cash prizes. All-inclusive wristbands must be purchased for $60 to enter the event. Make a vacation—or staycation—of the event; many area hotels and campsites have partnered with the festival to offer special accommodations and transportation. GIVING BACK
DREAM TEAM By Christina Wells
Joe Zednik enjoyed his round of golf with Tiger Woods in the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open Pro Am at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The Bonita Bay resident’s donation to The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito, California, secured the opportunity to tee it up with Woods. While Tiger as a teammate may be a singular event for Joe, he and his wife, Dee, repeatedly support organizations that benefit young people. “We take an active role offering our time and financial support,” Zednik says. “Our goal is to help young people see a dream and then find a way to achieve it.” Zednik, a retired futures and options trader and current hedge-fund manager, serves as a member of the board and executive committee for the Immokalee Foundation as well as chair of its Charity Classic Celebration and Pro Am Golf Tournament. He also mentors two young men in the foundation’s program. Zednik handles the organization’s involvement with Take Stock in Children, a statewide mentoring and scholarship program for low-income and at-risk youth. Zednik also published a fine art photography book designed to showcase Immokalee’s positive side in fulfilling the American dream. In the couple’s former hometown of Chicago, he serves on the boards of two charter Catalyst Schools in the city’s poverty-challenged west side. “These schools, organizations and programs focus on children and the holistic education of children,” Zednik says. “They offer opportunities to mentor and tutor.” Dee, a retired Kraft Foods executive and psychotherapist, sits on the Immokalee Foundation’s scholarship committee and mentors two female participants. She serves as a tennis coach for the Special Olympics and works on behalf of Planned Parenthood. She supports several global animal preservation initiatives. In 2008, she participated in a mental health mission in Rwanda that assisted genocide victims. “I believe in being passionate about anything I do,” she says. “Joe and I are committed to initiatives that allow young people to access education and opportunity.” u
