From the Publisher
Life does not get much better in Naples than in November. Although we don’t experience what some might consider the true version of fall, our own version (and the only one I know) is not too shabby. We enjoy the cooler, crisp days, finally taking the top down on our convertibles and relaxing on a Sunday afternoon without worrying that the leaves are piling up in our yard. It is also a time when Neapolitans see a flurry of activity as merchants and charities scurry to get out their “save the date” notices, and our calendars start to fill up. One of the first major events of the season is the fabulous Hats in the Garden luncheon. Of course, there’s the stress of what to wear to go with that hat (I know, tough job I have!), as it’s a super-stylish fundraiser for the Naples Botanical Garden. I am always amazed at the turnout of beautiful women, more than 550, and no two with the same topper! As this year marks the tenth anniversary of the event, we share with you the vision of “The Fab Five” (page 82), the women behind what is arguably the most coveted ticket in town. Beyond the hats, there is so much anticipation this season. Some of the other not-to-be-missed events this month are the Community School of Naples’ Angel Ball on the 9th, The Immokalee Foundation’s Charity Classic Ball on the 16th, and the new Naples Zoo Children’s Gala, also on the 16th. Turn to this month’s calendar section, page 197, for more details on these Naples Illustrated-sponsored events and much more. Then, for more up-to-the-minute details on events happening around town, head straight to the Going Out Guide on our website, which is continuously updated. Even better, go to naple sillustrated.com/enews and sign up for On the Town, our weekly e-newsletter, and let the event suggestions come straight to your inbox every Wednesday, starting with a weekly “5 Things to Do.” As publisher, some of my responsibilities include advertising sales and sponsorships, so I have a finger on the pulse well ahead of the actual publication date. The upbeat vibe I am getting from everyone when it comes to the outlook for this season is more refreshing than it has been in years. I look forward to seeing you around town!

After you flip through “Millinery Milestone in the Garden” on page 82, head over to Naples Botanical Garden for a first-hand look. One of my favorite blooms is the Calico flower, a stunning ornamental vine native to Brazil, which I spotted entering the Butterfly Garden. 24

Every year around this time, there seems to be a sense of surprise in the air. It’s a time when we start to ask each other the same rhetorical question: Where did the year go?! Then the dance begins to squeeze every ounce of celebration from the two months that are left before we have to turn the page. Of course, there is no shortage of exciting events to choose from around town this season. And we’re here to help you figure out how to fit it all in—or escape it all, if you prefer. For starters, you’re sure to find “Just the Ticket” on page 62, where we serve up a curated view of the cultural season, including the film festival’s coming attractions, Pulitzer-prize-winning plays on stage and the stunning art exhibits coming to some of the best galleries around town. If you’d rather opt out of all the hustle and bustle (even for just a day), our “Marco Island A to Z” guide on page 92 may be just what you’re looking for. Or, consider cruising out of town by turning to “Sea & Shore” on page 53 and experience a luxury escape on the water that offers seamless butler service among its many pampering amenities. When we near the end of the month, though, it’s time to head indoors, remember what we’re grateful for and serve up a family feast for Thanksgiving. And when it comes to decor for this holiday, it’s all about the table. So, we thought we’d freshen up the traditional centerpiece with three stylish twists to the holiday tablescape. Make sure your table is the “Center of Attention” by turning to page 34 for inspiration. I wish I could pick a favorite, but all three looks seem equally inspiring—and we hope you think so, too.

Looking for a new twist on a seasonal sipper? In this cocktail from its fall menu, Tommy Bahama eschews the standard pumpkin spice and nutmeg for a dose of New England with a splash of maple syrup. 2 parts Kirk and Sweeney 12 Year Rum 3/4 parts fresh lime juice 1/2 part maple syrup 1 part ginger beer 1 dash Angostura bitters Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass except the ginger beer. Add ice and shake with a Boston shaker to blend and strain over fresh ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish with an orange peel. MARK LYE
Golf pro, former TV analyst … and Naples’ ace in the hole. While Mark Lye is widely known in golf circles, he’s also taking a big swing in the charity circuit in town. The golf pro spent 18 years on the PGA Tour and was a long-time analyst for The Golf Channel before moving his family to Naples and joining Old Collier Country Club three years ago as director of membership. Today, he takes part in about a dozen charity golf events each year across the country. Among his charitable efforts close to home, Lye started the Lucas Cup Pro-Am Golf Tournament earlier this year, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He named the tournament after his son, who has juvenile diabetes. And this month, Lye is participating in the Immokalee Foundation’s Charity Classic Pro-Am Golf Tournament. —Melanie Hembree NI: Golf has taken you around the world, why choose Naples to settle down? ML: We love the climate and the Midwest attitude here. This is the best part of Florida.
033-Insider Opener-1113.indd 33
What are some of your favorite things to do in Naples? I have a boat and fishing is my passion. Aside from Old Collier, what are the mustplay golf courses? Augusta National is my favorite. Next one on the bucket list for people that haven’t played it is Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Then there’s Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, California. Do you have a go-to golf shop in Naples? Pure Performance Golf Labs is the best at assembling golf clubs and they’re good people. That’s where I have taken my stuff for the last three years. What advice do you have for avid golfers? You can practice hard and get everything down, but it’s all about attitude. I have seen guys with awful golf games win big tournaments because they have a non-defeatist attitude. That is what it’s about, no matter what you do in life. You’re not going to hit great shots all day—it’s about maneuvering around the bad ones because everyone’s going to get them. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | NOVEMBER 2013

Whether your holiday style leans to the traditional, trendy or tropical, these stylish tablescapes provide an inspirational spin on the Thanksgiving centerpiece.

CLASSIC Design Tip:
Create this on a smaller scale using a series of tumbling pots. Select fruits, flowers and vegetables with hues that are similar to the colors of the room.
This twist on the traditional cornucopia is a tipped-over iron urn filled with burgundy-green and green hydrangeas, sunflowers (plucked of their yellow petals), romantic antique roses, sedum, geranium foliage, liquid amber fall leaves, a mixture of root vegetables and fruits, including pomegranates, figs, plums, black grapes and apples.
MODERN For a streamlined look, hot-chocolate calla lilies are grouped in simple acrylic containers with the stems drenched in shallow water for hydration. The deep plum color of the lily is a surprising take on the classic colors of autumn. The flower, chosen as much for the beauty of its stem as its bloom, is complemented on the table by plums and wasabi peas, which are delightfully unexpected decorative elements. 34
Design Tip:
Use white linens and flatware with acrylic containers across the table, so the flowers remain the star attraction.

Design Tip:
Think beyond the usual tropical flowers to include exotics for a unique look.
TROPICAL
White porcelain monkeys brimming with orange dahlias represent the gathering of the Thanksgiving harvest. The centerpiece is complemented by ceramic containers of orange brain celosia and puffs of green trick dianthus. Raffia baskets stuffed with Key limes and clementines add coastal flair, as do the miniature date palms above them. The bamboo lanterns were painted white and strung with bark-covered wire. —Teri Evans

Stephanie Plum, the regular-Jersey-girl-turned-bounty-hunter created by Naples resident and author Janet Evanovich, returns November 19. That’s when Evanovich’s next book in the Plum series, titled Takedown Twenty (Random House Publishing Group), hits bookshelves and e-readers. The plucky heroine takes on Salvatore “Uncle Sunny” Sunucchi, a mobster on the lam whom Evanovich envisions as “a cross between Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos and Turk Sollozzo from The Godfather.” We suspect Stephanie will have her work cut out for her. “Mob bosses are not so easy to bring down,” says Evanovich. —K.S.

Modern Drama Who: Georgina Chapman, co-designer of Marchesa with Keren Craig The look: Stunning evening wear inspired by vintage silhouettes with a modern flair the backstory: Founded in 2004 by best friends Chapman and Craig. the two brits, both 37, met while studying at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London Seen on: The red carpet on stars including Jennifer Lopez, Sienna Miller, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz and Jessica Alba.
By Linda Marx How do your designs capture the spirit of your muse, the late socialite Marchesa Luisa Casati? She was a living work of art and was so daring and dramatic in the way she dressed—an ideal I strive to achieve in each collection. Her outfits often looked more like costumes than clothing. I trained as a costume designer in school, so I create through that lens and adapt for the modern-day woman. What daily activity influences your collections? For our recent Spring collection, I was taken by the spirit of India in the 1960s, especially as captured by The Beatles’ White Album and the band’s relationship with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I utilized a vivid color palette and featured traditional Indian beading and embroidery techniques throughout.

What inspired theMarchesa Voyage, your new sportswear collection? We wanted to capture the essence of our brand but at a more accessible price point. … Marchesa Voyage is a glamorous, effortless and seasonless global lifestyle, whether a woman is traveling to a remote island, going to work or running errands on the weekend. Since you travel extensively, what items can you not leave home without? My down pillow and Frette pillowcase, and my fragrance, Marchesa Parfum d'Extase because the rollerballs are perfect for traveling. I love to take pictures so I take my Canon. Inspiration can strike at any moment! How do you balance work and family? I am very lucky to have an incredible support system, including my mother, who recently moved to New York to be closer to us. I also have the luxury of bringing [my children] India and Dashiell to work with me. India loves playing with fabrics and beading. «

Road Warriors

During the holidays, many pet owners head out of town. And if you plan to fly off with Ruff or Fluffy in tow, Heidi Ganahl, founder and CEO of dog boarding, training and day care franchise Camp Bow Wow (campbowwow.com) offers these helpful reminders: ● Always check your airline’s requirements about the size of carriers, not all are the same. ● Make sure your pet gets used to the carrier long before your flight. Place him or her inside each day, gradually increasing time until it becomes familiar. ● Even if your furry pal is tiny, do not try to sneak a pet on the plane. ● Feed fido no less than five or six hours before your flight, and water no less than two hours before, to avoid sickness. ● Make your pet feel at home by stashing familiar blankets and toys. Isel Tiziano, owner of Camp Bow Wow, Naples, also warns against pet sedatives since they can impair perception and actually increase stress. When traveling to a cold climate, remember your pet needs a coat and booties, too, to prevent frostbite. If your canine companion must stay behind though, Camp Bow Wow has a web-cam that lets you monitor your furry friend from anywhere in the world with just a few clicks on its iPhone app. Camp Bow Wow’s app lets you keep an eye on your buddy from afar.

There is nothing more attractive to a frazzled parent of young kids than pushing a button to call a butler and have him arrange nanny service, show tickets, dinner reservations or lobster tail and rosé Champagne à deux. When that happens on a cruise ship, it isn’t just attractive; it’s a godsend. Seamless butler service is the calling card and distinct advantage of Crystal Cruises. with 10 minutes’ notice), and watch them shine (she was there in nine). It is an integral part of shutting out all worldly pressures and tedious details so you can journey in carefree bliss. And it truly is bliss, beginning with the accommodations. The almost-500-square-foot Penthouse Suites have a separate living room with a big mahogany desk (if you must work) and bar area stocked with complimentary beverages, plus a huge veranda that is a must during those early-morning approaches to ports of call or sunsets at sea. The appointments are equivalent to those of a luxury hotel: Egyptian cotton linens, featherbeds, down pillows (or nonallergenic alternatives) and silk brocade bedding. Don’t be surprised if, between the luxe cocoon of the beds and the gentle movement of the ship, you have the best night’s sleep you’ve had in a while. At 982 square feet, the Crystal Penthouse is more like a chic apartment with amenities like floor-toceiling windows, a library, an exercise room and a powder room with a crystal pedestal sink. This year, Crystal also launches its new PURE staterooms for allergy sufferers. Serenity, one of two Crystal ships, will be in dry dock this month so 70 of its staterooms can be transformed through deep disinfection with nonchemical cleaners and installation of air purification, bacteriostatic barriers, allergy-friendly bedding and antimicrobial sanitizers. Sensitive or not, guests will definitely be able to breathe easier and feel better for those fascinating excursions. And these, of course, are a highlight of cruising. One of the unique Crystal offerings, available on both the Serenity and its sister ship, Symphony, is its collection of shore adventures. Here’s a short list: private cooking lessons with a Michelinstarred chef in Taormina; rainforest zip lines in Hawaii; gorilla tracking in Uganda; trekking on Mount Kinabalu in Borneo; volunteering in an orphanage in Cambodia as part of the line’s Voluntourism Adventures program; and trekking in the Chilean Andes. There are more than 2,000 options and the ability to customize a private adventure. Almost anything is possible. 54

Try the salmon tartare with sevruga (left) or the mushroom broth served in a Japanese tea kettle. Once every sailing, the Palm Court on the Lido Deck presents a Mozart Tea, with servers dressed in eighteenthcentury Viennese costumes offering things like mini Linzer and Sacher tortes, and rumspiked hot chocolate. Ask to meet the cheese sommelier. These individuals, all certified by the International Cheese Academy (yes, there is such a thing) in Austria, will help you distinguish between an erborinato and an époisses.

Gone are the days when cruising meant soft vacationing for sedentary types. With this cruise line, at least, you can be as active as you want to be and have experiences that are well beyond the ordinary—without sacrificing luxury and the convenience of unpacking only once (which, by the way, your butler will be happy to do for you). It’s especially great for showing young children new places and feeding their short attention spans with diverse, meaningful experiences in small bursts. Crystal’s Junior Activities Directors are terrific with kids. They not only lead programs

(anything from making their own T-shirts to competing in mini Olympics), they also accompany them to the age-appropriate shows in the evenings for an enriching cultural experience. It’s fun to watch them from across the room, all dressed up and sipping Shirley Temples, their eyes glued on a concert pianist or a Broadway revival. Enrichment is offered for adults, too. In addition to standard themed cruises, 2014 brings a new array of fascinating options, including Extreme Thrill Seekers (March 10, Singapore to Cape Town), with expert shark divers, deep-sea treasure hunters, shore adventures and more. Blade Runner BMW’s radical new i8 plug-in hybrid supercar is set to deliver electrifying performance. By Howard Walker In 1968, the acclaimed (though wacky) sci-fi scribe Philip K. Dick posed the eternal question Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? His novel was the basis for the Harrison Ford cult movie Blade Runner. Had Dick been around 45 years later to experience the unwrapping of BMW’s phantasmagoric lithium-ion-juiced i8, he might have rephrased the question and inquired Do Androids Dream of Electric Supercars? Dick would have gotten a serious kick out of climbing behind the wheel of this new i8. He dreamed of a world of futuristic flying cars zooming between skyscrapers, of sleek two-seaters with the kind of styling not dissimilar to the look of this radical new BMW. But this i8 isn’t some wild blue-sky concept designed for the babyboomer Android set. It lands here in the United States this spring with a $135,925 sticker—that’s before any cash-back offers—begging the question: What’s so special about that Ferrari 458? In addition to its jaw-descending styling, the i8 offers zero-to-60 mph acceleration in a mere 4.3 seconds, yet the ability to whirr in zero-emis58

There’s so much technology and advanced thinking in this new BMW it could have been funded by NASA. Case in point is its lightweight and super-strong carbon-fiber body structure, made of cloth and fibers that came out of a joint venture with Boeing. Then there’s the glass. As part of BMW’s laser-like focus on shaving weight, the i8 features so-called “thin glass” for the window between the cabin and the engine compartment. It’s the same chemically hardened stuff—wafer-thin Corning Gorilla Glass—used for the iPhone screen. As expected, most of the chassis and suspension components are

Breaking Ground
The season begins with signs of growth. In the coming year, Collier and Lee counties will be home to a few new performing arts spaces. The Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center (Bayshore CAPA) is one step closer to its new state-of-the-art performance space in the Bayshore Triangle in Naples. The process has begun to select property to house the planned 700-seat theater, 150-seat multiuse “black box” and an outdoor amphitheater. Meanwhile, January will herald the arrival of the Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center in Bonita Springs. The 27,000 square-foot flexible event space will include a 650-seat theater, broadcast center, culinary test kitchen, café and more.

Silver Season Under the new Artis—Naples moniker, which includes The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, Kathleen van Bergen, president and CEO of the cultural campus, shares highlights of what is to come for its twenty-fifth anniversary. NI: What can audiences expect this season? KVB: We have the best across many genres—from Lang Lang to Bonnie Raitt, from Renée Fleming to Jay Leno, and from Wynton Marsalis to Pilobolus! In The Baker Museum galleries, we create and present equally exciting variety and depth this season—from exquisite costumes made of paper to an unseen look at Egypt and a retrospective of Hanneke Beaumont. There is something for everyone. What new elements are you looking forward to? One highlight of the performance season is the commissioning of new music for the Naples Philharmonic. This season, we will bring two pieces to life: one work by Los Angeles-based composer Nicholas Jacobson-Larson, and the second work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. In the visual arts program, The Baker Museum will expand beyond the walls of our galleries by placing sculpture in a handful of locations around town. In addition, German artist Lothar Nickel will create a sculpture from marble on the grounds of Artis—Naples.
How does Naples stir excitement during season? From superior beaches to gorgeous golf courses, great shopping and dining to a remarkable array of cultural activities, we truly live in one of the most fabulous cities. As host to more than 300 events annually, whether through a concert, performance, exhibition, or education and community event, I invite you to explore all that we offer. (artisnaples.org)

Opening Acts
In March, TheatreZone presents the musical Chess on stage at the G&L Theatre at the Community School of Naples (above) .
In an apparent nod to the cultural appetite of Neapolitans, award-winning playwright Suzanne Bradbeer chose Gulfshore Playhouse to debut her new drama, The God Game. Presented in partnership with the Capital Repertory Theatre beginning January 16, the play tackles the tough questions of what is public and private in politics. Following the premiere performance in Naples, the play will open in Albany, New York, in May. (gulfshoreplayhouse.org) In another first, TheatreZone offers the first regional production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind. TheatreZone’s Artistic Director Mark Danni first saw the musical in London’s West End and seized the opportunity to bring it to Naples. TheatreZone is also bringing back Chess this season, which it first presented in 2007. Opera star Michael Amante joins the cast of the romantic musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (of ABBA fame) and lyrics by Tim Rice. (theatrezone-florida.com)

Shades of Light and Dark Marco Players From humble beginnings in hotels nearly four decades ago, Marco Island’s nonprofit community theater has grown significantly and should not be overlooked this season. The 83-seat, black-box style space is so intimate that audiences can nearly see the beads of sweat on an actor’s brow. This season there are four diverse shows including Apartment 3A written by Hollywood star Jeff Daniels. (themarcoplayers.com)

There is a lot of demand on people’s time and money. Collaboration makes the entire arts community stronger. It gives the artists the success they deserve. — Beverly Dahlstrom, Marco Players
Cast of Blame it on Beckett
Island Theater Company Three comedies and a holiday special are sure to delight the entire family at this community theater on Marco Island. Blame it on Beckett opens this month, followed by a Christmas production, Three Wise Men and a Baby in December. The season picks back up in March with Frankenstein, A New Musical, which sheds new light on a character we all thought we knew. (theateronmarco.com)
Naples Players Marking its sixtieth anniversary last March, the Naples Players showcases some award-winning standouts this season. Our Town, a Pulitzer-winning play and Thornton Wilder’s most frequently performed work, opens later this month. The heart-tugging love story revolves around marriage, family and the importance of savoring the moments we often take for granted. Then, for comedic relief in the spring, The Drowsy Chaperone is certain to lighten one’s day. The crowd-pleasing musical has won five Tony Awards. (naplesplayers.org)
The Barber of Seville
Opera Naples Four timeless productions—from the humorous classic The Barber of Seville to the dramatic Nabucco—provide a variety of options for patrons of Opera Naples. If you missed the October performances of Medium, there’s still a trio of productions to enjoy. Next, in February, is I Pagliacci exploring life as a circus performer, with circus acts sprinkled into performance. The production is in collaboration with Circus Sarasota. (operanaples.org)

visual arts Local Visions DeBruyne Fine Art presents works from four diverse artists who share a love for Naples. Kicking off the season January 16, “Pure Magic” features E.J. Paprocki’s paintings showcasing the beauty of the Everglades and New York City. Donny Finley tells a personal story with his collection titled, “Visions in Art 2014.” Finley says, “When I was a small boy, my dad was a jail keeper and my mother cooked for the inmates. In the yard, the only place to look was up at the sky,” he recalls. “I would lie on the grass to see the faces and shapes in the clouds. This show was inspired by those creative visions instilled in me as a child.” (debruynefineart.com)

This season, 13 different exhibitions from architecture to costume arts call visitors to The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples. The museum also offers the opportunity to watch a master at work. Over the course of three to five weeks beginning in early January, Lothar Nickei will transform a chunk of marble into a work of art before the public’s eyes. The finished sculpture, commissioned by the museum and underwritten by Friends of Art, will then become part of the permanent collection. The Baker Museum also showcases the first ever exhibition focused on the Duchamp family, artists who contributed significantly to the early phases of modern art. Developed along with prominent scholar Francis Naumann, “Duchamp Brother and Sister” features the work of four members of the Duchamp family: Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp. (artisnaples.org/baker-museum) Lothar Nickei will be The Baker Museum’s artist in residence.

Looking ahead
Totem Plantain, Joan Sonnenberg
The Naples Art Association at The von Liebig Art Center in Naples is looking to its 60-year history as inspiration for the future. This season the focus is on getting back to basics, the core mission of education and the economic impact the arts have on the community. “The roots of the community are firmly in culture and the arts,” says Aimee Schlehr, executive director. “As the city grew, the arts scene grew with it. We are trying to remind people how important this is.” Highlights include an exhibition of works by Joan Sonnenberg, as well as Clyde and Niki Butcher, whose exquisite black-and-white photographs of nature are always a crowd-pleaser. O
On a balmy morning in June, five ladies gathered for a tea party on the lushly land scaped grounds of the Naples Botanical Garden. But it wasn’t simply the scones that brought Leslie Fogg, Jane Berger, Kath leen Kapnick, Karen Scott and Vicky Smith together. They are united by a longtime love of the garden and a deep devotion to its last ing success. In fact, that devotion has earned these ladies a collective nickname among garden insiders. They are known as the “Fab Five.” All have chaired the garden’s signature fund raising event, Hats in the Garden, which marks its tenth year this month. Ask the Fab Five about the beginnings of Hats in the Garden, and they’ll credit Jane Berger. Ask Berger, and she’ll credit her lucky charm: Carlton Varney. In 1996, Berger sat next to the famed inte rior designer on an early morning flight from Dublin to New York. The tired twosome struck up a conversation, and Berger revealed her wish to launch an event in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, similar to the popular lun cheon at New York City’s Central Park Conser vancy. Varney boldly promised his support, and the rest is history: He attended Berger’s Columbus inaugural luncheon as well as the inaugural Naples Hats in the Garden. Today Hats is a sold-out event with a wait ing list. Kapnick has chaired two Hats gather

ings and describes the day as being “like the Easter parade in November.” Society loves a chance to show its loveliest side, but there’s something about this particular party that’s special, she says. “There’s no other event in town where you get to see so many ladies so beautifully turned out,” Kapnick says. “And as it becomes better known, people realize how much fun it is, not just to spend some time in the garden, but to see what [hats] people are wearing. Some are homemade. Some are the latest Parisian fashions. But it’s always a fashion show, whether or not we’re having a fashion show.” Fogg still recalls the first Hats in the Garden. Forget glitz and glamour; in those days, all you needed to shine was a glue gun. One of Fogg’s craftier friends even took an old hat, snipped off the brim and added empty pillboxes to create her own “pill box hat.” Now ladies don the most magnificent millinery they can find, and the luncheon lures the hottest names in haute couture, including Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta. For Fogg, who currently serves as a co-chair of the garden’s capital campaign with Vicky and David Smith, the garden continues to captivate even after a decade of involvement. And the event helps sustain it. About 30 percent of the garden’s annual operating budget is derived from money raised by Hats in the Garden and the contributions of the Sustaining Leadership Council, notes Meghan Gorman, the garden’s associate director of development. “They really are the backbone of the garden,” Gorman says of Hats supporters and the Sustaining Leadership Council. And so are the friendships that have blossomed over the years. It was a decade ago when Fogg

invited Scott, her friend, to what was then just a little luncheon called Hats in the Garden. Unlike others in the Fab Five, Scott had no experience with botanical gardens, but the invitation piqued her curiosity. Initially, Scott was simply looking for a volunteer opportunity to meet new people and occupy her time, but it grew into a lasting passion. Since then, Scott has co-chaired three of the luncheons along with Vicky Smith, including the tenth annual Hats in November. This year’s event journal will offer a look back at many of the past decade’s highlights, including memories from event attendees. “Ten years later, it’s this great event that has helped to build something spectacular in our community,” Scott says. “That little thing turned out to be something big.” «

As the largest barrier island within the Ten Thousand Islands area, Marco features beaches that are consistently ranked among the nation’s best. ART in Marco Island ranges from casual
gift shops to serious collections. At the top of the list is the Elizabeth Evans Gallery (elizabethevansgallery.com). Founder Diana Evans Gratz has created a gallery of fine art photography (think Iran Issa Khan and Greg Lotus) where discriminating art lovers fawn over exhibits such as Bryan Bogater’s “Forgotten America” collection. Marco Island Center for the Arts (marco islandart.org) also hosts events, workshops and classes, while showcasing the work of many artists at the Lauritzen & Rush Gallery and La Petite Galerie.

The beach at Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort (marcoislandmarriott .com) is a wide berth of sand that beckons on lazy afternoons between lunch at Quinn’s on the Beach and drinks at sunset. Public beaches like South Marco Beach and Tigertail Beach (tigertailbeach.net) draw water babies and sun worshippers. Family-oriented Tigertail features the famous Sand Dollar Spit (once a detached island) where you can go shelling, fishing and birdwatching to spot everything from herons and egrets to ibis and terns. Is the firm privately or publicly held? A. Q. Do the owners and employees of the firm invest their own wealth alongside that of clients? A. Q. Are the firm’s client relationship managers paid for sales or service? A. Q. Are the firm’s portfolio managers paid based on assets under management or on long-term performance? A. At Bessemer Trust, wealth management is our only business, and we’ve been doing it for over 100 years. We’re privately held and always have been. We don’t have to answer to some parent company’s short-term earnings objectives or cross-sell products for them. We have no hidden agendas. What’s more, our owners and employees literally invest their own wealth right alongside that of our clients, so you benefit from a lot of very careful thinking. Our client service teams have no financial incentive to recommend one manager or asset class over another. They are entirely focused on serving our clients’ needs. And our portfolio managers are compensated based on long-term performance, not on short-term returns or assets under management since such incentives can taint judgment. Compare that to the answers you get from other wealth management firms. To ask a question that’s been on your mind, call us. And make it a tough one. We like those. Minimum relationship $10 million. Portfolio performance is not a criterion because most advisors do not have audited track records. Barron’s Top 1,000 Advisors (2010-2013): The rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 of the nation’s most productive advisors. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Wealth management and investing in the global economy Harnessing the power of the global economy As the U.s. economy continues to grow at a slower pace, and as yield becomes increasingly harder to find, investors are searching for more ways to boost growth in their portfolios. That’s why looking outside the U.S. is so important right now, not only in terms of diversifying your assets, but also in diversifying your portfolio to help protect against another potential downturn in the U.s. economy. the stephens Group can help you identify opportunities that give you the best exposure to the global marketplace while at the same time helping to minimizing your risk. Global perspective, local presence Group Principal, Jason E. Stephens, Senior Vice President, has seen firsthand the enormous economic potential that an energetic, entrepreneurial workforce can have abroad when regulation is loosened. On a recent visit to south America, Jason experienced the potential boost that Brazil will receive from hosting the World Cup in 2014 and then the Summer Olympics in 2016. There are a multitude of infrastructure projects in this region including in surrounding countries that make Latin America an exciting region to keep an eye on. Also, consider Europe, which is starting their recovery from the global meltdown. Many European equities yield over 4%1 and with the potential of an economic recovery mirroring the U.S., Europe could be a great investment for a portion of your assets. On a local level, Jason’s team includes fixed income specialist and municipal securities principal Richard B. Marchisio and senior portfolio manager and equity specialist Russell L. Roth. Together, they bring nearly a century of combined experience.

Turkey is just a prelude to the sweetest slice of the Thanksgiving holiday. That would be pie, of course. Try these picks for the classic dessert.
Dolly’s Produce Patch, Bonita Springs. Road Trip Naples Food Tours (naplesfoodtours.com) hits the road for its third season November 1. Owner and food lover Elaine Osbond had toured the culinary landscape in many cities in her global travels. When she noticed a similar attraction was lacking in Naples, she started her own. The tours, from 2 to 5 p.m., accommodate up to 14 people, and are filled mostly by private groups. The schedule runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for groups, while individuals can sign up on Wednesdays or every third Saturday. The bus stops at a changing list of five or six restaurants and specialty food shops for tastings. “I assumed it would be all tourists, but I have had mostly locals,” says Osbond, noting that many told her they had never heard of some of the places, even though they’ve lived in Naples for decades. —K.S.

The New Deal A quick guide to one of the favorite fall rituals for wine connoisseurs— the release of the year's Beaujolais.
By Mark Spivak
Beaujolais is more than Nouveau.
Few of us wine drinkers understand exactly why we do it, but it has become one of the rituals of fall: On the third Thursday in November, the release date for Beaujolais Nouveau, people around the world engage in an intense competition to be the first to taste the bottling. Let’s look at just what led to the annual celebration of the wine’s official release. Beaujolais Nouveau basics: For centuries, many wine estates have been making some form of new wine to give to their harvest workers. After all, it’s cheaper than having them drink the prime stuff. Beaujolais Nouveau is harvested, fermented and immediately bottled without aging. In France, it’s illegal to sell it after January 1.
Taste profile: Beaujolais is known for its vivid flavors of fresh berries, and Nouveau is no exception. It is light in texture and alcohol content and goes down easily. It’s a red that appeals to white wine drinkers. Nouveau makes a good aperitif and pairs well with an assortment of finger foods, fish and white meat dishes—including that Thanksgiving turkey. Stylish sipping: Beaujolais Nouveau always enjoyed some popularity, first in the bistros of Lyon and later in Paris. It became fashionable more widely after World War II. However, many observers trace its worldwide popularity back to the late 1970s. California wine was on the rise, and sales of French wine were declining in America for the first time. Winemaker Georges Duboeuf is often credited with the idea of making the Beaujolais Nouveau release a global event, and he succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. The good: From a consumer point of view, Nouveau is a no-brainer. The wine is almost impossible to dislike. From the standpoint of producers, it’s a cash cow—a wine that allows them to rake in immediate income without expensive oak aging. To a winemaker or wine geek, Nouveau also provides the first clue as to what the Burgundy vintage will be like. The bad: At first, the stepped-up marketing of Nouveau was a bonanza for the region, but after a few years, problems began to emerge. Many consumers got faulty impressions—that all Beaujolais was Nouveau; that they only ought to buy it in November; that Beaujolais wasn’t a serious wine; and that they should never pay more than $10 for it. In fact, the top Beaujolais from the 10 crus are some of the most glorious wines produced in France. In a good year, these wines easily rival the best Burgundies,

to seek out The hopes of Beaujolais producers are high this year after a disappointing 2012 harvest that was plagued by rain. The most reliable Nouveau in the United States comes from the large négociants, or wine merchants, who blend wine from dozens or hundreds of different growers. Our recommendations: Georges Duboeuf: King of Beaujolais, offering consistent quality. Louis Jadot: Venerable Burgundy estate expanded south into Beaujolais in 2000. Mommessin: Producing Beaujolais since 1865. Henry Fessy: Small production focused on quality. —M.S.
though it would be hard to convince the average American wine drinker of that. Nouveau damaged the market for real Beaujolais in the United States, effectively tossing the region into a tailspin from which it still hasn’t recovered. The myth: Many mistakenly believe Beaujolais doesn’t age well. In fact, top crus, such as Moulin-àVent or Brouilly, don’t reach their peak before four to six years, and can last far longer than that. When I visited Mommessin, I tasted 15- and 16 year-old examples of Brouilly that were bright, fresh and pristine. So go ahead and race to the Nouveau kickoff, but later slow down to savor some serious Beaujolais.«

Josh’s teachers always complained he couldn’t sit still, picked fights, defied authority and didn’t follow directions. It got worse when he discovered marijuana and wouldn’t take his medications. This chemical irregularity led to violent outbursts, legal troubles and depression. Discipline only incited threatening behavior that caused him to be brought to the Crisis Stabilization Unit. His family doubted he would ever graduate. But with the help of the Education Day Treatment Program – a unique partnership with DLC and the Public Schools that helps kids with learning disabilities and behavioral health problems - he thrived on the low class size, self-paced learning model and team effort between the teachers, therapists and family. His Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Josh is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

Holiday Hors d’oeuvres As our social calendar quickly expands, the challenge is keeping our waistline from expanding with it— thanks to the hidden saboteurs in the holiday hors d’oeuvres. While traditional rolls have generally fallen out of favor at most catered events, there is still no shortage of diet-busting temptations. “Cheese and cream are the items people still love and have a hard time saying no to,” says Fred Gardner, owner of Matthews and Gardner catering company in Naples. “And it’s the cheese in the hors d’oeuvres that probably contributes the most calories.” Of course, most events will offer a few healthful bites, too—you just have to hold out for them. “Make an effort to walk through the event with your eyes first, then choose,” says Ana Howe, owner of Here’s Howe Catering in Naples. “I like to stick with protein like grilled chicken or salmon and no bread. Plus, lots of veggies and fruit—period.” And if you’re the party host, consider a creative twist on lighter fare. For example, Howe’s tuna tartare is her most popular item, while Gardner of-
FITNESS FUSION A little inspiration goes a long way to keep workouts on track during season when we're too busy or tired to make it to the gym. Mix it up and stay motivated with these hybrid classes:
Savor This Grilled chicken, shrimp ceviche, and satays are the way to go when watching your waistline. But beware of dipping sauces, which are often mayonnaisebased—even if you can’t see it. Opt instead for red: think salsa or cocktail sauce.
fers bite-sized salad wraps that include cucumber, carrot and avocado wrapped in rice paper for an alternative to the standard veggie platter. “Everybody knows what healthy foods are, they just have to control their temptations,” Gardner says. Easier said than done, of course!
Skip That mini quiches and tiny French cheese puffs are hard to resist, but remember those bite-sized indulgences are made with cream and cheese, which can pack a wallop of calories if you have more than one. And who can stop at one?

Paddle Yoga + Paddelates The popularity of stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) has inspired even more challenging versions that blend in yoga or Pilates. Originating in Hawaii, SUP is similar to surfing, except you stand on the board and row with a canoe-type paddle. Naples Paddleboard (naplespaddleboard.com) offers Paddle Yoga on Saturdays, while Sweetwater Paddle Sports in Bonita Springs (sweetwaterpaddlesports .com) holds classes every day. If Pilates is more your passion, Paddleboard SWFL (paddleboardswfl.com) teaches a Paddelates class in Estero and Fort Myers. Beginners are welcome, but if you’ve never been on a board before, try a standard paddleboard lesson first. —Kailah Casillas piloxing Combine the core focus and flexibility benefits of Pilates with the cardio endurance of boxing, and voilà—you have Piloxing, a hybrid workout created by Viveca Jensen, a Swedish dancer and trainer. Neapolitans will find it at Paramount Fitness, a Naples fitness studio that only offers group classes. “It’s a low-intensity, full-body workout that uses body weight and weighted Piloxing gloves,” says Paramount owner Mike Pollara. The workout includes basic kicks and punches without striking anything, plus Pilates mat exercises. (pfnaples.com) —Kat Smith

Dan Rosenfeld (pictured far right) was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 11. One day he got a headache and crawled into bed with his mom, and the next thing he remembered he was in the hospital being told he had epilepsy. Since then, Rosenfeld has battled the disease, which affects the brain and causes seizures. After learning he wasn’t a candidate for brain surgery, he instead got a vagus nerve stimulator, which is similar to a pacemaker but for the brain. “Three months after my procedure, I said, ‘I have to do something different because there’s nothing being offered for people in my community,’” Rosenfeld says. He partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida to organize Walk the Talk for Epilepsy, raising $100,000 in the past three years to help people locally as they fight the disease. The fourth annual walk is at North Collier Regional Park November 2. (epilepsy.kintera.org/SWFL) —K.C.

Two to consider: ● The Jewish Federation of Collier County’s Annual Community Hanukkah Celebration, which includes a candle lighting and a concert by the Naples Klezmer Revival Band, November 27, at Mercato. Make A Date Published annually since 1998, artist John Bartoldus’s 2014 Naples Calendar features a dozen new frame-worthy illustrations of local scenes, a handy compilation of some of the city’s popular dining destinations, arts events noted by month, and a humorous monthly quote. “I am inspired by what inspires my customers,” says Bartoldus. “People in high-rise buildings like waterfront scenes; folks in Old Naples like cottages and scenes of Fifth Avenue; while most of our full-timers like off-thebeaten-path places like the Naples Zoo and park scenes like the gazebo in June.” What makes this date minder extra helpful is that funds raised from sales will support the programs of The Friends of the Library. Purchase it for $14.95 at Collier County library branches. —Kat Smith

Giving BACK
Painting a Brighter Future By christina wells As owners of the Harmon-Meek Gallery for more than three decades, William and Barbara Meek are deeply rooted in the Naples community, where they share a sweeping passion for art with a philanthropic brush. The couple established the Harmon-Meek Fund to provide art programs for disadvantaged children through the Boys & Girls Club, Grace Place and Youth Haven. “We have always felt strongly about exposing children to fine art,” says Barbara Meek, who operates the gallery with her husband and two daughters, Kristine and Juliana. “Bill’s appreciation for art comes from his parents taking him to art museums across Europe while his father, an Army officer, was stationed abroad.” William, or Bill, as his family calls him, has since organized three fundraising events that generated more than $300,000 for the Naples Art Association, while also initiating the permanent art collections found at Artis—Naples, The von Liebig Art Center and Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples (C’mon). “The gift of your time and talent allows a nonprofit to spend donation dollars on mission-related programs rather than fundraising,” says Bill, who worked with American Master artists or their widows to secure donations of 60 works of art valued at more than $1 million. It became the foundation for the Modern American Masters collection that started the venue now named The Baker Museum. ROLAND SCARPA
The couple’s commitment to philanthropy has also inspired their daughters. Kristine Meek serves on the Naples Zoo board of directors and committees for The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, C’mon and The League Club. Juliana Meek is on the board of the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida and has served on the gala committee for David Lawrence Center. “You can’t teach someone to be philanthropic,”
says Barbara, “but you can set an example.” «
The first annual Visionaries of the Visual Arts Award and Benefit Dinner presented by Harmon-Meek Gallery will be held January 14, 2014, at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. The event will honor three individuals for contributions to the visual arts in Southwest Florida. Proceeds benefit at-risk youth and local children’s art programs.
