The next- generation Escalade / ESV. Is the arrival of the most anticipated generation of Cadillac’s crown jewel worthy merely of an introduction, or more of a coronation? We would argue the latter considering the level of design, craftsmanship and detail that transformed it into the epitome of luxury. The charge of taking an American icon and elevating it to new heights of perfection, perfection that existed solely in the hearts and imagination of the world’s finest designers and artisans was as exhilarating and monumental as the vehicle itself. Welcome to the Cadillac of Escalades.

From the Publisher

Philanthropy is woven into the fabric of our community. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that also gives generously to help charities promote their causes. It is such a pleasure to see the positive ripple effect of philanthropy throughout the years. There are so many noteworthy charities in Naples—and our annual Naples Charity Register is just one way we applaud them. This year, we decided to give that magazine a fresh face and asked local artists to help us do it. Then, we asked our readers to vote on the stunning art that beautifully illustrates the cover. For those of you receiving this issue in the mail, you’ll notice this year’s Charity Register has been included, along with our Fifth Avenue South shopping guide and the Journal of the Naples Botanical Garden. (It certainly has the “thud factor,” as we say in the industry. My apologies to the mailmen/women!) As season shifts into high gear, here are a few of the exciting charitable events happening this month that we are proud to support. We start off with a bang with the grand reopening of the Naples Botanical Garden. The Eleanor and Nicholas Chabraja Visitor Center and adjacent gardens have been designed specifically to enhance the visitor’s experience. The new restaurant, Fogg Café, is managed by Lurcat Catering and boasts a multipurpose indoor space capable of hosting traveling exhibits, art shows and lectures. The theme for the annual Hats in the Garden fashion show this month is “Couture et Fleurs: Runway fantasies inspired and created from nature,” which is sure to delight attendees. Our four-legged friends will also have their day (every dog does!) at the sixteenth annual Humane Society “Ride Along the Riviera” Tea & Fashion Show November 11 at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. A lighthearted day of fun for an excellent cause. And on November 14, the Immokalee Foundation will host its annual Charity Classic Celebration Dinner & Auction at The RitzCarlton, Naples. (I am going to be spending a lot of time at the Ritz; I know, tough job, but somebody has to do it!) This event includes an amazing evening of heartstring-tugging stories that reveal how the foundation has empowered underprivileged children in our community through educational programs, putting them on the right path to success. I hope to see you there!

culture of community

VANESSA ROGERS / Hair & Makeup: Philip Douglas

As the social season shifts into high gear, the excitement and anticipation for what’s ahead always seems to be slightly veiled in overwhelm. With so many events on the calendar, how do you fit them all in? We all know that’s impossible to do without double booking (which is more stressful than fun), so we must choose. The silver lining is that no matter what your taste, there is something for everyone. One of the most-anticipated events of the season is this month’s Hats in the Garden, the main annual fundraiser for the newly expanded Naples Botanical Garden. If you ever wondered how the garden went from a simple plot of land to the much-beloved community gem that it is now, then turn to “Rooted in Tradition,” beginning on page 68. You will marvel at the devotion the Kapnick family has for the garden, which is evident in the countless ways they have helped it grow over the years. But it is more than a story about a garden; it’s about devotion to family and community. And as we focus on culture in this issue, we’re here to help you sort through the season's many events, exhibits and performances to figure out which ones you want to star on your calendar. For a preview of what’s to come in indie films, on stage, and in the art world, head straight to “Coming Attractions,” our annual cultural preview that starts on page 76. We also take you inside the studios (and creative processes) of four highly esteemed Naples-area artists in “Brush with Genius,” beginning on page 88. Finally, we offer a nod to the Native-American culture and its custom of giving thanks. Turn to Insider on page 39 for an inspiring Thanksgiving tablescape that reminds us of the importance of gratitude not just during the holidays, but all year long. Editor’s Pick: Love this feather-adorned Whisper wine bag from Z Gallerie, a fun way to present a bottle of wine at a dinner gathering. aqua is my favorite, though you can see all three shades on page 54.

Spiced Cranberry Sauce The traditional Thanksgiving feast isn’t complete without the sweet tartness of cranberry sauce. And while nothing beats tradition—mom’s is always best—here, we’re offering a spicy twist on the classic to make it the most-passed side dish on the family table. Ingredients 2 cups fresh cranberries 2 cups medium-bodied red wine, like Pinot Noir 1 cup sugar 1 tbsp. fresh grated ginger b/c tsp. ground cloves In a medium saucepan, bring cranberries, sugar, wine, ginger and cloves to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, simmering about 10 minutes, until the cranberries burst and sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature before serving.

A Culture of Styling and designs by Matthew Huddleston and Louis Boutier, 50Fifty Creative Services Photography by Vanessa Rogers

Though the origins of Thanksgiving revolve around a complicated history between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe at Plymouth Rock, the powerful sentiment of gratitude has remained steadfast through the centuries. Gratitude is at the heart of the Native American culture, which focuses its customs on giving thanks throughout the year. In this vibrant table setting, we place a gift at each plate, from a traditional bracelet to a leather-bound journal. The suggestion is that dinner guests would arrive with small tokens to express thanks for each other. The table’s centerpiece features traditional holiday vegetables, from gourds to radishes, that are visually complemented by yarrow, a classic western American flower that grows wild in more arid climates, and waratah, an eye-catching red exotic flower. In this Thanksgiving tablescape, a nod to vibrant Native American culture and its year-round custom of giving thanks.

this scene the inspiration is a lovely painting reminiscent of colorful Native American blankets by Naples artist Lynda Fay Braun (lyndafaybraun.com). She spent many years in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the painting is one of her favorite pieces. The Native American influence continues around the table with traditional headdresses, colorfully striped candles, and a sprinkling of individual feathers that create movement and a splash of color in the chandelier box above a quiet foundation of cream-colored linens. The idea is to find unique ways to celebrate a traditional holiday through the things that inspire you, says Matthew Huddleston of 50Fifty Creative Services. And wrap it all up in a spirit of gratitude, of course. As the famous Native American proverb states, may we always “give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way.” —Teri Evans 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Neapolitans, get ready to unleash your inner da Vinci. The recently opened Painting with a Twist teaches guests how to paint while enjoying a fun night on the town. Local art instructors guide customers, who can bring along beer and wine, in a step-by-step creation of a work of art during a two- to three-hour class. Owners Lynn and Morgan McGregor, a local mother and daughter, are already basking in the studio’s success. “We knew Painting with a Twist would be a hit, but we didn’t think it would happen so quickly,” Morgan says. “It’s clear people here have been itching for a new night out.” Inspired by a friend who launched a studio in her hometown in Michigan, Lynn decided to move to her winter home in Naples and open one with her daughter. “I have a degree in fine arts, and my daughter has hers in advertising. With these two combined, we have a dream team,” Lynn says. In tune with the community’s commitment to charity, Painting with a Twist teams with a local nonprofit once a month to support and spread awareness for the organization’s cause. “We call this program Painting with a Purpose. We create an event solely for the month’s nonprofit, and 50 percent of the proceeds goes directly to it,” Morgan says. (paintingwithatwist .com/naples) —Anna Bjorlin

The savvy residents of Old Naples and beyond head to Trinity-by-the-Cove Church in Port Royal every November for festive early holiday shopping. The annual Christmas Market, now in its fiftyninth year, is organized by the Women of Trinity, which donates all proceeds from the bazaar to benefit Collier County and global charities. Among new vendors to check out during the November 15 event: Fancy Fascinators, Astratta Art Rock That T, Elaine Murphy Art, Kathleen’s Top Dog Kitchen, Chez Boët, Naples Wine Collection and Stella & Dot. Mary Cooper, one of the event chairs (who sells unique jewelry at the market she creates under her brand Mary’s Beads), has some advice for newbies. Stop first at the Golden Elephant Booth to browse oneof-a-kind attic treasures, and next at the Women of Trinity’s Gourmet Booth for jars of homemade mango chutney, fig and lemon jam, and hot pepper jelly. Last year’s market took in nearly $30,000 that helped support nonprofits dedicated to mental health, shelters and exceptional service needs. Women of Trinity will donate all funds raised this year to charities that target physical health and development. —Kat Smith

St. Matthew’s House and Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs recently joined forces. Certified trainers from Guardian Angels teach clients of St. Matthew’s Justin’s Place program to help train assistance dogs. The mission of Guardian Angels is to rescue, raise, train and donate skilled service dogs, while St. Matthew’s Justin’s Place program acts as a road to recovery for individuals struggling with substance abuse. After training, the dogs are paired with disabled veterans. “This partnership helps us with the expense of training, raising and donating the dogs, and it speeds up the process,” says Carol Borden, founder and executive director of Guardian Angels. “I already see an enormous difference with these men. I think, most important, it’s because they are finding a purpose once again.” —A.B. 42

Desert Hideaway

With laser focus on privacy and service, Amangiri beckons as a peaceful haven to discreetly unplug By Teri Evans

As a cool breeze ushers in daybreak, dramatic rock formations frame one of the most exclusive resorts in the American Southwest. Hidden on 600 acres in Canyon Point, Utah, Amangiri (amanresorts.com/ amangiri/home.aspx) sits at the end of a scenic, two-mile-long road that winds to a crescendo of anticipation.

Amangiri’s Desert Lounge, also available for private dining (left), and the private terrace of a suite with resting mattresses and a fireplace.

The long approach is ultimately rewarding. As you enter the resort, narrow walkways mimic the feel of a slot canyon. The property blends in with the desert landscape to avoid competing for attention with the monumental nature that surrounds it. Known for its unparalleled focus on privacy and service, Amangiri is a peaceful haven for those looking to discreetly unplug and explore nature’s rugged beauty. The property is

ideally located in the Four Corners (where Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah meet), a region that has a rich concentration of national parks and monuments. Amangiri has only 34 suites, some featuring private pools and a sky terrace with an outdoor bed beckoning you to slumber beneath a sky full of stars. Each suite has a private courtyard entrance leading to a modern interior that includes an expansive combined bedroom and living area, writing desk and soaking tub with landscape views. Amangiri is nirvana for high-spirited explorers. The resort can arrange a myriad of customized excursions, including scenic helicopter tours, private tours of nearby national parks, watersports activities and countless one-of-a-kind trail adventures. Two daily group hikes offer a taste of the property’s trail system, including a popular morning trek to Ulrike’s Cave that, along with a false mine shaft nearby, appeared in the 1996 film Broken Arrow, starring John Travolta. After a day on the trails, the 25,000-squarefoot Aman Spa is the best way to get lost in pure indulgence. To truly decompress, the resort touts its Desert Dream experience, which combines a cranial-sacral massage (targeting the head, spinal column and sacrum) and flotation therapy to inspire a meditative state, then finishes with a relaxing aromatherapy massage. The facility also

Off the

beaten Path Amangiri offers countless private excursions for exploring canyon country and will custom-build an itinerary for all guests. Here, we highlight a handful of the most celebrated activities, on and off the property, to satisfy the interests of nearly every traveler. Adventurous hikers … try the popular Hoodoo Via Ferrata guided hike that will take you high above the property’s Hoodoo Trail, offering stunning views of freestanding sandstone towers known as hoodoos. The most powerful part of the hike is crossing a 600-foot-deep gorge via the narrow 232-foot suspension bridge. Water-sports enthusiasts … explore nearby Lake Powell (lakepowell.com), the second-largest man-made reservoir that stretches nearly 2,000 miles and straddles Utah and Arizona with breathtaking slot canyons along the way. Venture on your own or take Amangiri’s private tour and enjoy the picturesque scene by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Archaeology buffs ... dig for dinosaur bones at real fossil excavation sites, guided by a paleontologist. The exclusive tour includes three hours of exploration, plus a lesson in dinosaur history at the Paleontology Center in nearby Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument. Shutterbugs of all levels … must visit nearby Antelope Canyon, the most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest and just a half-hour drive off the property. The petrified sand dune on Navajo Nation offers a breathtaking spectrum of shapes and colors that change as shafts of light beam into the narrow pathways. There are several cash-only public tours available (navajotours.com), or skip the crowds and take the resort’s luxury private excursion, which also includes a visit to Rattlesnake and Owl slot canyons. High-spirited explorers … take in a bird’s-eye view of the dramatic landscape in a hot-air balloon flight, which launches right from Amangiri. The spectacular scenery includes Lake Powell, Navajo Mountain, the Vermillion Cliffs and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

includes a yoga studio, expansive water pavilion and full-service gym. Once you’ve roused up an appetite, Amangiri’s executive chef, Shon Foster, is eager to anticipate your every culinary whim in the restaurant’s open kitchen, featuring regional new American cuisine that also pays homage to the Asian roots of Aman resorts, Amangiri’s parent company. Do not miss the mouthwatering dish simply titled “mushroom,” a delicious array of wood-fired foraged mushrooms enveloped in rosemary, espresso, cheddar and herbs, and topped with a sunnyside up hen egg. The dining experience is often interactive. At harvest time, guests are encouraged to pick fruit from the plum, apple and almond trees that dot the pathways to the suites. The pastry chef will cheerfully prepare a dessert with your bounty.

Aman Spa at Amangiri spans 25,000 square feet with five luxurious walnut-lined, candlelit treatment rooms (one double, four single) and serene landscape views.

Amangiri’s restaurant offers panoramic views of surrounding plateaus and the swimming pool, which wraps around a rock escarpment.

The dining room offers sweeping views of the desert landscape, including the main swimming pool, which wraps around an enormous rock escarpment within a sunken courtyard. With its latest S63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz has created the world’s most thrilling performance sedan. It can even drive itself. By Howard Walker The shimmery chrome lettering on its prodigious rump brands this four-door projectile as S63. But such abbreviated nomenclature sells this wicked Mercedes-Benz sedan short. This car is more worthy of the badge S63 ICBM, as in “Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile.” This is a continent-crossing car. New York to L.A.? It wouldn’t break a sweat. Paris to Istanbul? Maybe a stop in Monaco for lunch. Sydney to Perth? Be home in time to sizzle a shrimp on the barbie. Mercedes-Benz claims it has an official top 62

speed of 186 mph. But given free rein, drivers surely have no problem seeing 200-plus on the speedo; this four-wheel-drive leviathan covers ground with such ease and in such eerie, stealthy silence that 150 mph feels like 50 mph. The S63 also offers the benefit of being able to drive itself. Drivers can take their hands off the wheel for 10 seconds, and the car’s Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with steering assist and lane guidance capability will keep them perfectly centered in the lane. It will also lock onto the car in front and keep an inch-perfect

distance from it—even if it comes to a halt. But sadly, after 10 seconds, the system hands back control; the fear of possible, and probable, mega-expensive legal claims keeps Mercedes from giving the system the green light. So what gives the S63 such ballistic performance? That would be the AMG handbuilt, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 boasting a mighty 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Peterbilt 18-wheelers have less mechanical muscle. When mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and channeling those ponies to

each of the four wheels, that huge V-8 can jet-propel the S63 from standstill to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. That’s an insane feat, especially considering this stretched-wheelbase sedan measures just more than 17 feet nose to tail and tips the scales at a whopping 4,400-plus pounds. Make no mistake, this Merc’s off-the-line thrust is a match for anything Space Mountain, Universal Studios or Wet ’n Wild can provide. It incites the same neck-jerking, teethclenching and eyeballs-to-the-back-of-thehead experiences. Just don’t hurl your hands in the air and squeal like a 12-year-old. But the big Benz also pampers as proficiently as it propels. Take the car’s Road Surface Scan system. Using cameras in the front bumper, it detects bumps, dips or potholes in the road ahead and instantly adjusts the air suspension to deliver a magic carpet ride. Then there is the cabin. There are oceanview Miami penthouses with less glitz, glam and gorgeousness than this. The S63 boasts door-to-door quilted nappa leather—even on the dash—and sexy satin brushed metal with high-tech carbon fiber trim.

Scott and Kathleen Kapnick with Wilson, the couple’s miniature labradoodle

When Scott and Kathleen Kapnick returned to the United States from Europe 12 years ago, they settled in New York City. But it wouldn’t be long before the couple would feel a strong pull to make a home in Southwest Florida as well. Scott’s parents lived in Naples and his father, Harvey, had just signed on to lead a major project here—the creation of the Naples Botanical Garden. Everything changed when Harvey died of a heart attack shortly afterward in 2002. Scott and Kathleen’s attention would shift to Naples to help carry out Harvey’s vision of turning a fledgling garden into a renowned community gem. Harvey didn’t start the garden, but he was approached by its eight founders to help take it beyond the idea stage, where it had lingered for several years. The founders needed a catalyst, and as a former chairman and chief executive officer of Arthur Andersen, the elder Kapnick had a knack for building partnerships, raising funds and thinking strategically. His first strategy? Telling the founders that the five-acre garden they proposed wasn’t going to cut it. Although he was born in rural Michigan, Harvey had lived in large cities with expansive green spaces, and he knew that if this garden were going to succeed, it needed to be something grand. After joining the garden’s board of directors, he found a 170-acre plot south of Old Naples and purchased it with $5 million of family money in 2000. “I think my father felt that Naples was on a path to pave [over] everything and that this was a good way to secure a great space that could be built out as a garden,” says Scott, who is chief executive officer of Highbridge Capital Management. “I think he also believed that it could be a jewel in Naples’ crown if it were done in a way that was really first class.” After the land was purchased, an existing strip mall and parking lot were transformed into a garden experience that would give the public a taste of what was to come once the land was fully developed. But after Harvey’s sudden death, the momentum on the project slowed to a standstill. “There was a huge void in leadership because Harvey really was the driving force behind what was going on,” says Brian Holley, the garden’s executive director. That’s why the board flew to New York to recruit Scott to assume his father’s place on the board of directors.

Landscape architect Robert E. Truskowski designed the Kapnick home’s textured gardens to give the feel of a collector’s garden at a large Caribbean estate. Truskowski also worked on the Caribbean garden at the Naples Botanical Garden.

The Port Royal home was built with neutral-hued Florida keystone.

It was an offer he couldn’t refuse. “I knew that this garden was important to my father, that he had gotten a lot of people to support his vision and that it wasn’t going to happen if I didn’t get involved,” Scott says. “I wanted to see this garden completed.” Right off the bat, Scott Kapnick and the board recruited Holley as director and a team of internationally renowned landscape architects to work on the garden’s design. Then in 2006, the Kapnicks donated $10 million to the garden’s capital campaign, following that with another $3 million gift. These would not be the only donations they’d 72

make; among other things, they often match challenge grants from other donors. Outside of Scott’s board involvement, Kathleen has volunteered countless hours and served in many integral roles, ranging from former co-chair of Hats in the Garden, the garden’s main fundraiser held each year in November, to serving on the Sustaining Leadership Council that generates interest in and donations to the organization. The Kapnicks still marvel at how the Naples Botanical Garden has evolved from a huge tract of land into many cultivated tropical gardens, walking trails, a nature preserve, and

countless educational programs. From school tours to therapeutic horticulture programs, and partnerships with conservation groups and culinary schools, the garden has shown that it is more than just a pretty face. In October, the garden underwent a major expansion with the Eleanor and Nicholas Chabraja Visitor Center, a sustainably designed complex that includes a restaurant, expanded gift shop, seating areas and space for exhibits, art shows and lectures. Kathleen and Scott Kapnick are co-chairing the center’s opening gala, scheduled for January 8, 2015. “We’ve achieved what we have so far

mostly with private capital,” Scott says. “So this event will be a big thank you for those who have donated their time, effort and capital to helping us achieve what we have over a ten-year period. It’s rewarding for me to see all of this happen, and be involved in something that will be here for generations to come.” Scott and Kathleen had been vacationing here with their children for many years. The couple first met as law students at the University of Chicago, married after earning their degrees, then moved to Manhattan and after that Europe, where they raised their four children. Each spring, the family visited Harvey and Mary Kapnick for a month-long vacation at their home in Naples. “To our kids, Naples was America and our roots here go back to their babyhood,” Kathleen says. “Scott’s parents always made our visits so special. Anything they could do to entertain [the kids], they did.” After Harvey and Mary died within two months of each other in 2002, Scott and Kath

leen purchased their Port Royal home, and ultimately needed to tear it down in order to build a larger and more modern one out of Florida keystone. Still, there are nods to Harvey throughout the Kapnicks’ home and its gardens. The couple’s living room has sunset views, because in Harvey’s old home, the family used to have cocktails in the living room as they watched the sunset. Scott’s home office has a view of the water, just as his father’s did. The Kapnicks also went to great lengths to design a breathtaking garden for their home. Landscape architect Robert E. Truskowski designed the Kapnick home’s textured gardens that are anchored by a simple, but eyecatching combination of black mondo grass and black and silver bromeliads. Truskowski infused the black and silver scheme with unique tropical plantings, such as orchids, to give the feel of a collector’s garden at a large Caribbean estate. Several large trees are strategically placed

068-feat kapnick-1114.indd 75

at focal points around the home, including a large Russian olive tree placed at the right of the entryway as an anchor. Colonnades of Royal Palms also enhance the home’s linear architecture. An orchard of lemon, lime, and grapefruit trees is nestled between the main and guest house, while a starfruit tree and mango trees are among the surroundings elsewhere on the property. “But [Truskowski] never planted anything in a way that would hide the house,” Kathleen says. “He wanted the house to be seen and the architecture to be respected.” Truskowski added: “You see a lot of homes in Naples that are blocked off with high walls or fences. We tried to handle that transition from the street to give back this nice garden that could be viewed from the house and passersby.” Truskowski simultaneously worked on the Caribbean part of the Botanical Garden, on a design that includes steel drums, Bahamian chattel houses, hammocks and green

spaces where children can play. Scott thinks his father would be proud of the progress. “He would be happy, but he’d probably say it took us too long,” Scott says with a laugh. “He’d be really proud of what everyone has done to support the vision and get it done in such a wonderful way. There are some guys on this board that he recruited who would not have even been involved in this if it hadn’t been for him. So it’s very emotional for them and for us, too.” Although they live in Naples part time, the Kapnicks have poured their heart and soul into the community as if they were fulltime residents. “We think it’s important to be involved in the community,” Kathleen says. “When we moved back to New York, we didn’t expect to lose Harvey [and his wife Mary] as soon as we did, we didn’t expect to buy their place or be on the board of the garden. But life happens, and the more you get involved in Naples, the more you want to be involved.” « NAPLESillustrated.com | NOVEMBER 2014

Marquee Moments at Artis—Naples

P

Planning a schedule filled with more than 300 Broadway shows, exhibitions of never-before-seen artwork, concerts ranging from Motown to Handel and more is no easy feat. “Crafting the season is a mind-boggling yet magical puzzle,” says Artis—Naples President and CEO Kathleen van Bergen. The most talked about show of the Broadway Series is sure to be The Book of Mormon arriving at Artis—Naples for a limited six-day run beginning January 13, 2015. The first musical from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone is a nine-time Tony Award winner. Since its debut in 2011, The Book of Mormon has remained one of Broadway’s hardest-to-get tickets, consistently selling out shows on both sides of the Atlantic. A word of caution: The show’s irreverent brand of humor and explicit language are intended for adults—leave the kids at home. The Broadway hits continue when Pippin takes the stage March 24, 2015, four decades after first delighting audiences with slick Fosseesque choreography and high-flying stunts. The revival, featuring captivating acrobatics by the award-winning Montreal-based Les 7 Doigts de la Main, will dazzle audiences. The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra opens its Masterworks series with a welcome concert for new Musical Director Andrey Boreyko, who will handle his role in Naples while also serving as musical director for the Orchestre National de Belgique in Brussels and the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker in Düsseldorf, Germany. In his first season, Boreyko draws musical talent from all corners of the globe, including

Russia’s Mariinsky Orchestra, and pairs the Naples Philharmonic with stars including Chris Botti and record-setting six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald for memorable performances. In his second year as artistic director of The Baker Museum, Frank Verpoorten has a clear vision: secure the recognition the museum deserves in Florida and beyond. The foundation, he says, is already in place. World-class facility? Check. Exceptional staff? You bet. NAPLESillustrated.com | NOVEMBER 2014

A permanent collection of more than 3,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art? Double check. To ensure the community recognizes these strengths, the museum is in the process of seeking accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, the governing body of museums in the United States. Looking ahead, its fifteenth anniversary season will be comprised of seven exhibits that highlight the museum’s permanent collection and give Naples art lovers the opportunity to experience some of the most sought-after traveling exhibitions. “What you’re going to see this season is, as usual, a very ambitious exhibition, as well as exhibitions that we generate from our own collection,” Verpoorten says. The exhibit “100 Years of American Abstractions” showcases 50 artworks from the museum’s permanent collections, some of which have never previously been shown at the Baker. Featured artists include Dale Chihuly, Willem de Kooning and A.E. Gallatin. Verpoorten is most excited about what he calls this year’s “blockbuster” event, “God and Heroes: Masterpieces from the École des Beaux Arts, Paris,” featuring 140 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and more dating from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth

centuries. “This is a very ambitious exhibition with a lot of work that has rarely left France,” he says. “Until World War II, Paris was the center of the art world. Generations of American artists made their pilgrimage to study at the École, and the focus of the exhibit is all the epic themes that were a part of the students’ instruction.” The exhibition, opening February 19, provides the chance to view works from masters including Rembrandt and François Boucher. Many of the works come from the collections of prestigious venues like the École des Beaux Arts and the Louvre, providing a rare chance to see these works so close to home. Photography lovers will want to mark their calendars for a presentation of the documentary-style work of Weegee composed of more than 400 pieces from a private collector of the renowned photographer’s images of the realities of life in New York City. In the spring, “Florida Contemporary” returns again to bring together the works of the state’s most respected painters, sculptors, photographers, graphic artists and local rising talents. Perfect 10

Above and right: Scenes from TheatreZone’s first nine years of performances, which have included musicals, comedies and dramas featuring a stellar roster of visiting Broadway and TV stars.

Right: During its tenth anniversary season, TheatreZone will present special events featuring Andrea McArdle and Shirley Jones.

TheatreZone opens its tenth season in January by looking back. Mack & Mabel was the first show the group ever presented, and Artistic Director Mark Danni felt reintroducing it this season was the perfect way to welcome a year filled with celebration of the past and future. He even met with the show’s composer, Jerry Herman, for his blessing of Danni’s concept. Performances of Sweeney Todd, Brooklyn—The Musical and They’re Playing our Song round out the anniversary season. For one night only, Academy Award winner Shirley Jones will take the stage as part of TheatreZone’s annual fundraiser. Taking place on November 9, the performance will follow a preshow reception and live auction that includes the opportunity of a walk-on role in one of TheatreZone’s season 10 productions. The 10-year anniversary season will also include a gala performance in tribute to the past decade. A concert featuring songs from the past nine seasons of TheatreZone shows will be capped off by an appearance from Andrea McArdle, the actress who played Broadway’s original Annie and a longtime friend of the theater company. Looking ahead, TheatreZone is focused on cultivating the next generation of performers. Following a collaboration in October in which the theater company partnered with Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music for performances of Godspell, Danni plans to work even more closely with FGCU students. “It means so much to me that we have been able to please and entertain for the past nine years,” he says. “It means we are doing a good job.” (theatrezone-florida.com)

The Naples Players brings both laughter and tears with late fall performances in Blackburn Hall at the Sugden Community Theatre. The Spitfire Grill tells the tale of a recent parolee looking to start again, while the Rogers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma! will have audiences singing along. God of Carnage and The Last Romance take on the more serious subjects of love, loss, prejudice and parents behaving more childishly than their kids.

Center STAGE One of the much-anticipated highlights of Gulfshore Playhouse’s 2014-2015 season comes straight from its inaugural New Works Festival. The Butcher by Gwydion Suilebhan will make its full-production debut February 28, 2015. The play, a finalist from the 2013 festival, depicts the powerful story of two strangers from dramatically different religious backgrounds who witness an event that makes them question their firmly-held beliefs and the cultures that have defined their choices. Artistic Director Kristen Coury and the playwright spent the summer refining the production in New York City. “That’s the beauty of working on a new play; you have the ability to work directly with the playwright and to influence the direction,” Coury says. Suilebhan will join audiences for a series of in-person discussions following the show’s opening. There is a different kind of conflict taking place in Body Awareness, which focuses on the struggles of a nontraditional American family. The play, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker, runs November 1-16. During the holiday season, theatergoers will marvel at Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, which offers a fresh twist on the much-beloved Christmas classic, when it takes the stage December 6-21. Another hilarious production sure to be an audience pleaser is the Tony Award-winning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which focuses on the complicatedly funny lives of three middle-aged, single siblings. (gulfshoreplayhouse.org)

Marco Island’s Showcase The Marco Players (themarcoplayers.com) opens its 2014-2015 season on November 5 with the familiar Sunset Park, a popular comedy/drama written by veteran TV show writers Marley Sims and Elliot Shoenman. In the spring, the retelling of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, styled in the vein of the popular Housewives reality show franchise, is sure to bring hilarity to the stage when performances begin on select dates from April 16-May 3, 2015. Meanwhile, Island Theater Company (theateronmarco.com) will serve up a handful of comedies and musicals, including Frankenstein–A New Musical on February 26-28, 2015, when last season’s cast return for encore performances. It’s followed by the classic comedy Arsenic & Old Lace from April 9-18, 2015.

THE GREAT Outdoors

The Naples Art Association has added new opportunities to live up to its motto of “Imagine! Discover! and Create!” New this year are one-day make-and-take workshops for crafting everything from paintings to jewelry, while the Intuitive Art and Yoga course is designed to strengthen the body and creativity. Back by popular demand, the Art Connects lecture series brings art lovers, historians and artists together to dive deeper into the creation and science of art. Topics range from the intersection of art and technology to violin with Jeff Leigh, a violinist with the Naples Philharmonic. The natural beauty of Florida will also be highlighted through a series of presentations spotlighting the state’s natural splendor. Works to be displayed include realistic etchings of Florida’s native birds by Tampa artist John Costin and the Members’ Gallery of works inspired by Mother Nature created by the members of the association.

The natural beauty of Florida informs the work of artist John Costin, whose art to be featured at NAA includes Snowy Egret, left, and Pensive Great blue, Above. 82

Cultural Connection Naples’ newest museum, RAMA: The Russian American Museum of Art, may only be a year old, but it represents a lifelong dream for Olga Arkhangelskaya and her daughter Leeza Arkhangelskaya. The owners of Gallery on Fifth are excited to finally see their dream come to reality, but RAMA is about more than visual art. “Our main motivation in having the gallery and now the museum is to bring cultural experiences to the people of Naples,” Leeza says. Founded in November 2013, the museum follows the same mission as the gallery to mix classic and contemporary works from both Russian and American artists. Over the course of the year, the mother-daughter team is working to build the permanent collection and raise funds for a permanent space dedicated to RAMA. Two brunches scheduled for February 22 and March 22, featuring the musical performances by local musician Kat Epple, playing a collection of flutes from around the world, and the electric violin and vocals of Paul and Renata Rozmus. The progression of RAMA is exciting, but Gallery on Fifth has plenty to celebrate. The fifteenth anniversary season begins with the exhibit “We the People: Everyday Life in Soviet Ukraine & Contemporary Southwest Florida,” opening November 29. It highlights everyday life, juxtaposing specially commissioned works by contemporary artists Marcus Jansen, Juan Diaz and Daniel Venditti—all Florida natives— with historic paintings from Soviet masters. The message is simple: “We are people. We have the same struggles. We have the same dreams; be it right here, in Southwest Florida or in the Soviet Union,” Leeza says. (artorg.net)

Multimedia show “Discover Da Vinci & Michelangelo, Side by Side” comes to CFABS in February.

This season, the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs offers more—more space, more performances and more popular classes and lectures. The 29,000-square-foot main building off Bonita Beach Road boasts the Hinman Auditorium, a 400-seat theater and dedicated exhibition and classroom space. The added space equals permanent homes for a variety of workshops and classes, including the Master Artists Program. Cheers to no more waiting lists. A separate auditorium and film center hosts the popular “Films for Film Lovers” foreign film series. Expanded performance space means a more robust performance schedule as well, and the Center for the Arts is taking advantage of its new home. The Hinman Auditorium will host performances by the CFABS Community Players adult and youth programs, musical performances from acts including Florida’s Finest Tenors and The Mikado Opera, and lectures such as “Discover Da Vinci & Michelangelo, Side by Side,” an interactive multimedia experience of the work of two of the Renaissance’s finest talents. Gallery Walk Sitting at the intersection of contemporary craft, fine art and design is newcomer Thomas Riley Studio. Pushing furniture into the category of art and sculpture, the studio seeks “people, processes and work that tell a story and offer something beyond just an aesthetic appeal,” says Creative Director Chad Jensen. Now in its second season, community engagement is a central part of Thomas Riley Studio’s mission, and a scheduled gallery talk series allows the audience to interact one-on-one with artists. Color is a major focus of the season; a collaboration with Michigan’s Wasserman Projects (owned by part-time Naples resident Gary Wasserman) brings a solo exhibition of German colorist Peter Zimmerman. Other season highlights include new works from glass artist Joshua Wojick and abstract artist Kim Keever. Così Fan Tutte will inaugurate Opera Naples’ new Performance space in February.

New Beginnings Opera Naples’ new home, the David and Cecile Wang Opera Center on Linwood Avenue in Naples, is one of many brand new aspects of the 2014-2015 season. The recently renovated building now houses administrative offices, rehearsal and performance space and a chorus room. And this is only phase one. Phase two, set to begin next summer, will add permanent high-tech lighting and sound systems to the space. Così fan Tutte, the inaugural performance in the 264-seat theater, premieres February 5 under the direction of newly appointed artistic director, Maestro Ramón Tebar. Already well known across South Florida, Tebar has worked with Miami-based Florida Grand Opera and the Palm Beach Symphony. Carol Shaw, CEO of Opera Naples, is confident Tebar’s vitality and deep connections within the musical community will invigorate Opera Naples for its tenth season.

From chamber music to the blues, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy great tunes all season long. Maestro William Noll begins Classic Chamber Concerts’ twentieth season with a performance of Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major” and a work commissioned especially in celebration of two decades of bringing chamber music to the audiences of Southwest Florida. While the concertos are from the masters, Classic Chamber Concerts showcases young talent. At just 24 years old, violinist Nadir Khashimov has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Russia and the United Nations Orchestra, among others. The virtuoso brings his considerable talent to Naples to perform an evening of Mendelssohn along with the Fifth Avenue Orchestra. Khashimov will also share his skills with music students throughout the region via the Classic Chamber Concert’s Excellence in Education program. This initiative provides interested students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and appreciation of classical music. (classicchamberconcerts.org) For those who prefer B.B. King to Brahms, the Bonita Blues Festival brings more than 10 bands to Bonita Springs’ Riverside Park March 6 and 7. This year’s lineup includes Lurrie Bell’s Chicago Blues Band, Albert Castiglia and Southern Hospitality for a two-day event filled with food, fun and, of course, the blues. (bonitablues.com) Looking for a great way to spend a Saturday with some of the finest tribute bands around? Head to Bayfront in Naples for the Rockin’ On The Bay concert series. Now in its third year, there’s even more music as Rockin’ On The Bay expands to Coconut Point mall in Estero on the second Saturday of every month from January to May. (rockinonthebay.com)

Kid’s Corner

Not just for adults, the cultural riches of Southwest Florida are primed for sharing with children of all ages. ● Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples The Loos Gallery at C’mon is one of the few fine art collections in a children’s museum. Rotating featured collections include work from Naples’ finest galleries, including the Harmon-Meek Gallery and Gallery on Fifth. ● The Baker Museum The first Wednesday of every month, Make-and-Take workshops let little artists create their own piece of art. Led by a Baker employee, a hands-on craft based on a featured exhibit is designed just for small hands to take less than 45 minutes to create. ● The Naples Philharmonic A performance of the classic children’s tale Peter and the Wolf is a great way to introduce the whole family to the orchestra. Young music lovers aged 3 to 9 (along with curious adults) are invited to attend the Magic Carpet series in which kids can get up-close-and-personal as members of the Naples Philharmonic demonstrate their instruments. ● The Naples Players Registration opens in December for the spring productions of the community theater troupe’s KidzAct. Classes culminate in professional-caliber performances in front of a live audience. On the lineup for spring are Zombie Prom Atomic Edition, High School Musical, Jr., Disney’s Mulan, Jr. and the Bard’s classic Twelfth Night.

Scenes from Human Capital, which examines how two families, linked by their teens' relationship, twist love, class and ambition.

The spotlight turns to indie filmmakers when the annual Naples International Film Festival opens this month to celebrate the art of cinema. Over four days, 40 full-length and short films and documentaries take over Silverspot Cinema at Mercato. The festival’s opening night film and party on November 6, features Song One, which first debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and stars Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway. The music-themed story focuses on an artist’s struggle and explores how music inspires the soul. First-time filmmaker Kate BarkerFroyland will also be on hand for a talk-back with the audience after the screening. Other highlights include Human Capital, Italy’s entry for the 2015 Academy Awards, and Ernest & Celestine, a 2014 Oscar nominee for best-animated feature and the delightful story of an unlikely friendship between a bear, Ernest, and a young mouse named Celestine. For theatergoers who prefer documentaries, Slingshot, which focuses on inventor Dean Kamen and his work to solve the world’s safe-water crisis, has garnered several audience awards at numerous film festivals. Meet four accomplished local artists as we step inside their studios to learn what inspires them and how their passion for art has shaped their lives By Chelle Koster Walton | Photography by Vanessa Rogers

Walt Spitzmiller Among the collectors of his paintings Walt Spitzmiller (waltspitzmillergolfart.com) counts golf legends Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer, as well as The PGA Tour. The latter commissions the Bonita Springsbased artist to portray Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, including this year’s honoree, Jack Vickers. Spitzmiller’s career began 30 years ago, and he quickly rose to become the nation’s number one sports magazine illustrator—the “last of a breed,” he says, in the tradition of Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle. His art combines journalism and representational painting. Although writers would accompany him on assignments for Sports Illustrated and various golfing magazines, his criterion for his often nostalgic work is that it should tell a story on its own. Spitzmiller’s love of golf lured him and his wife from Connecticut to the Naples area 10 years ago. His studio at the Sunshine Plaza in Bonita Springs is open by appointment. Most recent work: Painting for the Jack’s Majors project—a collector’s coffee-table book portraying Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors victories. Some favorite artists: Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington. On being a magazine illustrator: It takes a special mentality to do that; you have to be a storyteller. Biggest challenge: The pressure of painting under tight deadlines. 88

“My career has been a passport that has taken me to more places than I’d ever have thought … But I’m most comfortable in my little world.”

“My style has become more powerful and expressive over the years and my formats larger. I think that is the reaction of my South Florida surrounding. I am interested in how nature exhibits both chaos and calm, constantly evident on micro, macro and universal levels, seemingly at odds and without purpose. 90 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Mally Khorasantchi Mally Khorasantchi (mallykhorasantchi.com) was nine years old when she declared to the audience at an art award ceremony in her native country that she intended to become a malerin— the German word for painter. She studied with a number of German artists while developing her talent in Düsseldorf. Khorasantchi says she was inspired by the art of Gerhard Richter, Agnes Marti and Sigmar Polke, as well as the work of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Following Mally Khorasantchi two solo exhibitions of her work in Düsseldorf, in 1992 Khorasantchi moved to Florida, and she became an American citizen in 2006. This year the United Arts Council of Collier County honored her with a Stars in the Arts award, one of her most humbling moments, the artist says. Through November, her work is on exhibit at the Florida Capitol Building’s twenty-second floor gallery in Tallahassee. Her North Naples studio is open “by chance or appointment.” How she characterizes her art: Large-scale, colorful abstractions from nature. What she’s working on now: My “Oasis Series.” They are actually of palm trees. I call them Oasis—a place where you can find refuge, calm and peace. How her studio fuels creativity: It is my sacred space, minimalistic. That really allows me to immerse into my creative process. What’s playing when she works: Energetic music to keep me alert so I can concentrate. Sometimes I’m on my feet up to seven hours painting nonstop.

Emily James Her artwork graces walls from The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, to the Hôtel du Louvre in Paris, yet Emily James (emilyjamesart.com) admits she did not make a conscious decision to become an artist. She says she was born that way—creating art since she could hold a crayon while growing up in Florida. James graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, where she now serves on the College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance’s Dean of Arts Advisory Board. Recently, she moved her studio on Fifth Avenue South in Naples to a larger one in Vergina Restaurant’s courtyard. The studio provides gallery space that’s open to the public. She has been busy creating art to display in the new studio, including an interpretive “Pool Reflections” series. On her artistic style: I am blessed to have a variety of styles and subjects that interest me. They go from playful, sunny seascapes to detailed portraits to serious collector pieces. How her surroundings stimulate creativity: I just love the charm and ambiance of our downtown, and especially the people here. I stay inspired. Words to live by: Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. Other passions: I love paleontology, and I once found a huge megaladon shark’s tooth!

“Art is my salvation. I turn to my art whenever I’m troubled by anything and when I’m not troubled. I hope that in a small or big way, I can make people look at something I did and realize how precious every moment is, that every day is a new gift.” Phil Fisher Phil Fisher (philfisherfineart.com) and his wife, artist Natalie Guess, have worked out of studios in Naples for about 15 years, formerly on Fifth Avenue South and, for the past five years, in Crayton Cove. Fisher’s favorite studio, however, is the outdoors. Trained in traditional techniques at Sarasota’s Ringling School of Art and art schools in Ohio and Mexico, he feels he did not really hit his stride as an artist until he let his feelings show in an impressionistic manner. Then he found his way to the water’s edge to paint en plein air. Unlike most plein air artists, he paints big, with broad, flowing strokes inspired by artist Emile Gruppé, who lived part-time in Naples in the 1970s. A defining moment: I was painting a palm tree, and this man looks over my shoulder, grabs a brush and says, “This is how I paint a palm tree,” with a few wispy strokes, and walks away… It was Emile Gruppé, my favorite artist. We never met again. Words to live by: Talent is not a gift, it is a product of hard work, determination and perseverance following failure. Art he collects: Works by artists who I meet along life’s path—not really known artists, ones who bring me a memory of places I’ve been. A favorite creation of his own: A portrait of Everglades champion Marjory Stoneman Douglas that hangs in my home. A copy hangs in her historic home in Coral Gables. «

THE ESSENTIALS: Stock up on key pieces every man should have in his wardrobe so you’re never out of style. Just what should be in your closet? View The Essentials Guide on mrporter.com. UPDATE OFTEN: Smaller on-trend purchases (like a tie or pocket square in a hip print) made throughout the year can help keep your everyday look fresh. KEEP IT CLASSIC: When in doubt, stick to the basics and subtly try a new trend with an accessory or smaller item. TAKE A RISK: Don’t be afraid to have personality with your wardrobe. Among things we love in November are the ubiquitous foods featuring pumpkin that hit tables this time of year. While a nutmeg-y sweet pumpkin pie is de rigueur for the Thanksgiving finale, Naples-based Kellie Akehurst, who runs personal chef business Culinary De-Lite (culinaryde-lite.com), prefers the golden squash in savory dishes. The chef created a creamy soup and pumpkin Parmesan sauce (pictured left, with pasta and grilled chicken), which she makes for clients and family. Fall’s most decorative vegetable is more than a perfect partner for spices from cinnamon, to curry, to chili powder, it also packs nutritional punch. That orange flesh delivers healthy antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, E, and B, and vital minerals. All this goodness amounts to just 30 calories per cup, for which we are certainly thankful. —Kat Smith NAPLESillustrated.com | November 2014

The Eating Bar

Grape Street

The vacant space adjacent to Osteria Tulia has been filled with the much-anticipatedBar Tulia, an Italian gastropub scheduled to debut this month in Naples. Chef and owner Vincenzo Betulia calls it an “eating bar,” similar to cicchetti bars in Venice, Italy and tapas places in Spain. The chef will manage the new bar while continuing to run the kitchen at Osteria Tulia. Betulia’s been hard at work, traveling, tasting and hunting down wine and cocktail “hidden gems,” as well as unique craft beers brewed locally and abroad, he says. The new bar features a custom-built woodfired pizza oven and refurbished vintage Berkel slicer, which hint at culinary delights in store. Guests will be able to dine at the new bar, or sip a wine or cocktail as they wait for a table at Osteria Tulia next door. “I’m offering a first-of-its-kind diningdrinking bar in Naples, and the only full bar on Fifth Avenue South that also appeases the late-night crowd,” he says. Bar Tulia will open until midnight daily. No reservations accepted, just walk right in. —Oscar Santiago Torres

The upcoming oenophile’s dream of a street fair, the Naples Grape Escape, began humbly as a small wine-tasting event organized by The Rotary Club of Naples inside Wynn’s Market about nine years ago. The gathering morphed into the popular annual Grapes & Apes at the Naples Zoo, where over four years, it ballooned to the point where one night and one venue could not contain it. “We wanted to have a true festival atmosphere this year, ” Rotary President Rich Ahrens says. For the first time, the wine, food and artisan beer fest will expand to four nights, November 13 through 16, with multiple events ranging from vintner dinners at some Fifth Avenue restaurants to Boost Your Wine IQ Education seminars, Beer Bashes, live bands and more parties. For the main event November 15, Grape Escape will take over six blocks on Fifth Avenue South. Four ticket price levels from elite—which includes goodies like premium wine tastings, cuisine from dozens of local restaurants, and priority seating for live entertainment—to general admission are available for Saturday’s soiree. The festival, presented by The Rotary Club of Naples and Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District, will benefit several charities, including Learn2Earn, a Rotary educational scholarship program for high school students, Meals of Hope, The Wheelchair Foundation, ShelterBox, Gift of Life International and Rotary International’s End Polio Now initiative. We’ll raise a glass to that. (napleswine.org) —O.T.

INCA’S TWO

The many fans of the authentic Peruvian cuisine at Inca’s Kitchen will be happy to discover that owner Rafael Rottiers has finally cut the ribbon on his second location in the Pavilion shopping center across from Mercato. In addition to more of what we love about the original Golden Gate location, the new restaurant will feature a ceviche bar not available at the first Inca’s Kitchen on Collier Boulevard. Rottiers also plans to make changes to the menu, offering fish and premium beef among other things that will highlight his Peruvian culture of food. —O.T.

InWith the New Time for that annual November celebration— not Turkey Day, the release of new wine By Mark SPivak

Many wine drinkers regard the third Thursday in November as a major holiday. On that day, amid much hype and public relations fanfare, the year’s Beaujolais Nouveau is released, sparking a worldwide race to see who can be the first to quaff it after 12:01 a.m. The French mark the occasion with festivals, fireworks and parties as well. The concept of Nouveau is far from new, though, in Beaujolais and elsewhere. Vintners in the region traditionally made a special batch of new wine to commemorate the harvest, and the wine has enjoyed a vogue in the bistros of Lyon, but it rarely traveled outside the area. In France, harvest workers receive an allocation of two liters of wine per day, and the wine is invariably Nouveau. (You may pick grapes at Château Margaux, but that

doesn’t mean you’ll get two liters of Château Margaux.) And throughout Europe, many consumers do their wine shopping by taking a plastic container to the local cooperative and filling it with recently fermented wine. In truth, consumption of new wine is more common than you might think. France: There is a long list of vins de primeur, or wines allowed to be sold in the same year they are harvested. More than 50 appellations, or wine-producing regions, make white, red or rosé for local consumption. Like Beaujolais Nouveau, most of these wines are fresh and enticing, and are generally inexpensive. In the Languedoc, for example, the new wine is released about a month before Beaujolais Nouveau, and is widely offered in restaurants and wine shops to celebrate the harvest.

Italy: Vino Novello is the Italian version of Beaujolais Nouveau, and there are many similarities. The wine is bright and exuberant, low in alcohol, and released several weeks earlier than its French counterpart on November 6. The vivid fruit flavors result from a fermentation technique called carbonic maceration. With this method, the berries are kept whole and crushed under their own weight in a sealed container filled with carbon dioxide, which is responsible for the wine’s freshness. In Beaujolais, 100 percent carbonic maceration is mandatory, while Italian Novellos customarily are at least 30 percent wine created with this technique. Merlot is the most common variety used, although Teroldego (a grape common in Trentino-Alto Adige) is popular as well. Vino Novello has never really

The Beaujolais region (top) releases Nouveau in November. Spanish makers like Campo Viejo produce Vino Joven, young wine not aged in oak barrels like others.

doubtedly the Dry Table Wine from Charles Shaw (aka “Two-Buck Chuck”), sold exclusively at Trader Joe’s. It’s a blend of Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Valdiguie, a French variety similar to Gamay, the grape of Beaujolais Nouveau. It may be inexpensive (inside of $4 at last glance), but like the French Nouveau, it has its place—and a following. «

gained a following in the United States, despite attempts to market it as an alternative to Beaujolais. Spain: New wine is referred to as Joven, which translates as “young” and basically means wine that has seen little or no time in oak barrels. Joven may come from any recognized region but is most closely associated with Rioja—ironically, an area that made its reputation on oak aging. Joven may be released at any point after harvest until the spring of the following year, and generally is best consumed within a one-year window. It’s readily available in this country from wellknown producers such as Artadi and Campo Viejo, and typically sells for less than $15. United States: While Americans are fond of oak-aged wines, Nouveau is gaining ground. On December 6, the Fenn Valley Winery in Michigan will host its twenty-third annual Nouveau Festival. The featured wine is a dry red blend in the Nouveau tradition. The best-known new wine in the States is un-

Spain’s Artadi also produces and bottles Vino Joven, which is best consumed within one year of release.

As the temperatures start to dip a little, one of the best ways to relish the cooler fall breezes is to head outdoors for a hike on the Paradise Coast. From scenic, shady walks to solitary slogs through verdant swamps, the trails around Naples offer beautiful and diverse pathways that offer many ways to connect with nature. Johnny Molloy (johnnymolloy.com), an experienced hiker with a goal of backpacking in the wilderness of every state in the nation, has written 55-plus books based on his personal experiences. His latest guide, Day Hiking Southwest Florida (University Press of Florida, 2014), includes some of the best hikes to see the natural beauty in and around Naples with a renewed sense of wonder.

“I think the Naples-Fort Myers area has as good a representation of hiking opportunities as anywhere in the country, if not better,” says Molloy, who has spent his last 15 winters in the Sunshine State. The hiker-author shares insight on several treks in our area that outdoor enthusiasts of all levels can enjoy, from just over one-mile walks in Clam Pass Park and Rookery Bay to a 12-mile adventure through the Bird Rookery Swamp Loop. Whether you’re a weekend warrior looking to explore untamed wilderness or the casual enthusiast in search of a leisurely stroll, grab your compass (and GPS) and pack your sunscreen, hat and plenty of bottled water. Let the adventures begin! Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Balance Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary (2.2-mile loop, corkscrew.audubon.org) Hiking time: 3 hours The raised-platform boardwalk of this sanctuary takes you through a magnificent old-growth cypress swamp filled with wildlife and trees more than 500 years old. “Without a doubt, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. Aptly named, it truly is a sanctuary; you get to see Southwest Florida the way it used to be,” Molloy says. After passing through the Blair Audubon Center, the boardwalk takes you to the right of Lettuce Lakes, past the Plume Hunters Camp and right into the heart of the swamp.

Author-adventurer Johnny Molloy’s guidebook, above, covers Southwest Florida, including Clam Pass Park, right, and several other destinations around naples for hikers of all levels.

Clam Pass Park (1.2 miles there-and-back trail, excluding beach walking, colliergov.net) Hiking time: 1–1.5 hours This year-round beach destination’s trail winds through a mangrove forest and ends at the beach. In this straightforward hike, the trail crosses a bridge over the tidal stream before passing beachfront facilities, where you can choose to eat at the restaurant or hop on the passenger tram to take you back to the start. “Since you walk a boardwalk and end up at the beach, Clam Pass Park is great for both exercise and people-watching,” Molloy says, “and there aren’t many hiking trails that include a restaurant and passenger tram.” Rookery Bay (1.4-mile loop, rookerybay.org) Hiking Time: 1.5 hours

At the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Snail Trail loop brings hikers to the Kirkland homesite. Then, Molloy recommends, keep right on the Catbird and Slash Pine loops before resuming the Snail Trail, which eventually leads back to the visitor center. There are also water pathways for boat touring, canoeing and kayaking, as well as the opportunity to view an aquatic preserve. “The Rookery Bay Hike is unique because it includes an aquifer recharge zone where the land is preserved, and there’s an old-time homesite where you can see how the original settlers of that area lived 150 years ago,” Molloy says. Barefoot Beach Preserve (3-mile balloon loop, colliergov.net) Hiking time: 2 hours This hike takes you along Saylor Trail before ending at Wiggins Pass, where, as its name suggests, you can go beachcombing along

the shore and even catch a glimpse of aquatic wildlife, including dolphins, crabs and sand dollars. The best place to start is at the south end of the beach preserve, towards Wiggins Pass. Saylor Trail will bring you past the education center before looping back around. “This hike gives you a big overview of the ecosystems of Southwest Florida—you get that beautiful coastal maritime forest, the mangrove woods, and you can experience that coveted beach effect,” Molloy says. Sabal Palm Trail (3.5-mile double loop, flor idaforestservices.com) Hiking time: 2 hours “The Sabal Palm Trail is especially nice because it’s very near Naples and civilization,” Molloy says, “but it’s isolated enough to provide some solitude and wild enough that you might even see some bears back there.” The Sabal Palm’s multiple trails feature a richly diverse habitat, with pine and cypress forests,

open meadows and viewing platforms for a closer look at various bird species. Sabal Palm Trail leads to a four-way intersection offering a nice spot for a picnic. If you turn left at this intersection, you’ll reach an elevated logging berm heading west before the trail brings you back around. Collier-Seminole Adventure Trail (7.4-mile loop, including spur to backcountry campsite, floridastateparks.org) Hiking time: : 4.5 hours The wild Everglades surrounding this trail promise swamp slogging for experienced hikers, diverse wildlife, and an array of environments, from pine-palm forests to hardwood hammocks. For the best experience, Molloy says to veer off the main loop, which brings you across two service roads before leading to a backcountry campsite. A boardwalk takes you on a hike along a mangrovelined stream.

“This trail is the best way to experience Florida as it used to be; you take a single-track path over natural surface,” Molloy says. “It’s also your best bet if you want to go backpacking, since there’s a campsite as well as a boat and kayak launch site.” Bird Rookery Swamp Loop (12-mile loop, crewtrust.org) Hiking time: 7 hours The longest trail in the Naples area, this loop features remote terrain with untamed cypress-maple swamps to explore. Molloy suggests heading north once the boardwalk ends. The loop passes an elevated berm where you cross a slough. Staying on this route leads southward past an iron gate before looping around and back to the boardwalk. “This trail is nice if you want to tackle a long walk and get deep into the swamp, because there are elevated logging trams for you to walk on,” Molloy says. More than Skin Deep A pioneer in modern cosmetics, Lydia Sarfati built her empire from the ground up, from an improvised salon in her home in the 1970s, to her mega business, Repêchage, a company creating and distributing luxury skin-care products worldwide. Along the way, the entrepreneur, consultant and author created unique treatments in a first-of-its-kind day spa in Manhattan, which drew fans among New York’s glitterati and attention from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and The New York Times Magazine. In 1980 Sarfati began developing and manufacturing her own lines, bringing seaweed-extract-based treatments to the United States. The much-honored titan of the skin-care industry shares insight with NI on keeping skin gorgeous and healthy. Repêchage is sold exclusively in Naples at Philip Douglas & Co. (philipdouglas.com) —Kat Smith

The skin is the largest organ of our body, yet many tend to neglect their skin below the neck.

NI: What sparked your interest in skin care? Sarfati: When I was a young girl I used to chase after boys to try to pop their pimples! I’ve always had an interest in skin care, which led me to pursue a career in aesthetics. Fortunately, I made the right choice. Today skin care is one of the fastest growing segments in the beauty industry, and Repêchage is in more than 40 countries.

What is the number-one ingredient for perfecting complexions? Seaweed! Seaweed is composed of 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids, 42 trace elements and minerals that the body needs to maintain proper balance and function. Seaweed has antioxidant properties that help to restore aging skin and repair skin damage from sun exposure and environmental pollutants.

What one thing is tops to keep skin healthy? There is no one answer. The skin is a multifaceted organ, which needs a daily regimen, including cleansing, toning, using a serum, and a sun protection with zinc oxide. It’s crucial to repeat these steps each morning and night, along with a rejuvenating cream and exfoliator!

Lydia Sarfati Speaks Repêchage founder and CEO Lydia Sarfati will share beauty secrets with attendees of Humane Society Naples’ annual tea November 11 at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. Themed “Ride Along the Riviera,” the afternoon includes fine foods, a silent auction and a glamorous runway show featuring day and evening looks from Escales Paris and Marilyn’s Distinctive European Fashion, as well as chic attire from Pucci & Catana Luxury Pet Boutique modeled by furry, four-legged models. Proceeds benefit the society’s mission of caring for orphaned pets and finding them “fur”-ever homes. To register, visit hsnaples.org/events. —K.S.

Which of your honors or achievements are you most proud of? I am most proud of my manufacturing facility in New Jersey. In particular, seeing the level that we are at today and the quality we are able to provide our clients. Additionally, I am extremely proud of my two books, Success at Your Fingertips—How to Succeed in the Skin Care Business and The Lydia Sarfati Book of Skin Science. What is the latest from Repêchage? Most recently, we launched our Vita Cura Triple Action Body Collection to focus on anti-aging from the neck down. The skin is the largest organ of our body, yet many people tend to neglect their skin below the neck. With this in mind, we launched an entire collection versus a

one-size-fits-all product, knowing that different areas of the body have different concerns. Our Body Soufflé can be used for all-over hydration; Nutrí Crème for super dry areas or areas commonly exposed to the sun (elbows, knees or décolleté); Body Oil for delicate areas of the body; Body Contour Cream, for contouring and toning the stomach and thighs; and Foaming Seaweed Bath, a detoxifying bath treatment. Beautiful skin doesn’t mean just the face! As you will be the featured speaker at the Humane Society Naples tea fundraiser this month, we wonder if you have a soft spot for homeless pets. When I was growing up in Poland, our house was near a river. As a child, I took it upon myself to take care of homeless dogs in the area. I would bathe them in the river and feed them. I actually took in one, and named her Almi. Unfortunately, we had to leave her behind when we were exiled from Poland in 1969. I was so heartbroken, and to this day, I’ve never had another dog because they remind me too much of that heartbreak.

Looking for more GROWTH AND INCOME? Here’s why dividends may be the answer. U.S. companies generated $1.75 trillion in free cash flow in the last 12 months — nearly double the amount from 10 years ago.2

40%

of total stock returns come from dividends.1

Many are using this extra cash to raise dividends — companies have paid $350 billion in dividends over this time.3

Payout ratios are still near 50-year lows, suggesting plenty of room to rise.

A Long Term Perspective Takes Knowledge, Long Term Performance Measures Success. Listed by Barron’s among the Top 100 and Top 1,000 Advisors and ranked the #1 and #2 Advisor for Southwest Florida for the past four years.

5801 Pelican Bay Boulevard, Naples, FL 34108 239.254.2200 | www.MoranEdwards.com Barron’s Top 100 Advisors (2010-2013): Criteria was based on thousands of filtered nominations from investment, insurance, banking and other related firms, which were narrowed down by quantitative and qualitative criteria as well as by examining regulatory records and talking with peers, supervisors, clients and the advisors themselves. Portfolio performance is not a criterion because most advisors do not have audited track records. Barron’s Top 1,000 Advisors (2010-2013): The rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 of the nation’s most productive advisors. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Investment performance isn’t an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients’ risk tolerance than by an advisor’s investment-picking abilities. Into the Fold

An exhibit dedicated to the intricacies of origami fascinates viewers with the twists and turns in contemporary examples of the ancient Japanese art. The traveling exhibition, “Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami, was organized Two Books, Miri Golan by the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, and International Arts & Artists, Washington, D.C. The show covers history, representation of natural and supernatural subjects, geometric forms and conceptual constructions, and the impact of the art form on science, industry and fashion. The exhibition is on display at the Center for Visual Arts Bonita Springs through January 4, 2015. On select Saturdays, including November 8 and 22, the art center offers free Family Activity Days, during which kids and grownups can experience a quick guided tour and then complete their own project. Forest Foray In the midst of its sixtieth anniversary, Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has a new reason to celebrate. This month, it will become part of the national OldGrowth Forest Network (OGFN), which works to preserve ancient forests so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. To mark the special designation on November 16, there will be a special 2.25mile walking tour of the ancient forest highlighting Corkscrew history, ecology, story-telling and the landmark cypress trees. Corkscrew’s old-growth bald cypress forest is the first Florida forest awarded the network's recognition. What’s more, Sanctuary Director Jason Lauritsen selected a dozen distinctive trees to be designated Landmark Cypress along the boardwalk and serve as an outdoor classroom of sorts. The selected trees were each given a unique name with a historic, natural or poetic characteristic. Each one also has an educational sign to inform visitors about the tree's crucial role in the forest and how it got its name. (corkscrew. audubon.org)

Giving BACK

education Matters

A

Alan and Beverley Horton know the power of education first-hand. He graduated from Yale University, then became a journalist and executive at The E.W. Scripps Company Newspaper division. After graduating from Vassar College, she became a computer science engineer and later a celebrated educator. Together, the college sweethearts have spent nearly 50 years committed to ensuring all children, regardless of background, receive a quality education. The Hortons came to Naples in 1987 when Alan became editor of the Naples Daily News. With a master’s degree in education, Beverley served as a substitute teacher at Naples High School and began the first mentoring program there for troubled students, a program that continues today. “She’s the one who spurred my interest in getting so involved in civic matters and charity in Naples,” Alan says, “because of her passion for children and making sure that no child fell through the cracks.” Alan was transferred to the Scripps headquarters in Cincinnati a few years later, but Naples stayed with them, and they returned when Alan retired in 2004. Understanding that the best communities are those that invest in their children, Alan became a founding member of The Education Foundation—Champions for Learning (formerly The Education Foundation of Collier County). In 2009, Alan launched Connect Now, an initiative to bring the public into educational decisions and discover what parents wanted from their schools. Partially funded by the Hortons, Connect Now conducted focus groups. The result, a statement of aspirations, was presented to the school board and later became part of the strategic plan that is still in use today. Their dedication earned them recognition from Champions for Learning, which honored the couple with the Golden Apple award in 2012. Currently, Alan chairs the Community Foundation of Collier County and remains a senior advisor for Champions for Learning, focused on school readiness and early education. “If children aren’t ready for kindergarten, the chances of them catching up and being successful throughout their school years decreases dramatically,” Alan says. “Because of the wealth and thousands of concerned citizens in this community, we have an opportunity to show the nation how to deal with the issue of education.” «
