Traditions are good. Having grown up in a family of seven—large by today’s measures— Christmastime is filled with treasured memories for me. Our home was always bustling with excitement at any given moment. Santa was always right on the mark (with the exception of the oranges and nuts in our stockings), and would leave a small gathering of gifts in certain designated areas for each of my siblings. We would all get up before the sun and gather at the top of the stairs, anxiously waiting for my parents’ approval to race down and open presents. I remember my dad would playfully tease us and say, “Wait a minute, I need to brush my teeth!” or “Wait a minute, I can’t find my slippers!” All the while I knew he was behind the door trying not to let us hear him laughing. They would finally come out to give us the green light and the mayhem began. We would wrap up the morning with an egg casserole provided by our neighbor. Then, after being sent back several times to “try again with the outfit,” my mother would manage to get us all out the door for church for the true celebration. Now my siblings are married with families of their own and are spread all around the country. We still try to plan at least one holiday as a family, and we’ve added a few new traditions. We now have the family member who is the host of the holiday hand out gifts like Santa. We still do the casserole, although now have quite a few variations. My husband and I also hide clues around the house for our daughters to track down a special gift from us. Our girls are now 21 and 22, yet as each Christmas Eve rolls around, we are reminded that they still expect it. It makes me smile just thinking about it. Traditions I do miss in this era of social media are holiday cards and personal handwritten notes. I was starting to feel like people forgot my address, as each year the number of cards were declining, until it finally registered what was going on. I assume since the launch of Facebook people don’t feel the need to send photos of their kids and family updates since they now have the option to post “up to the minute” status of every aspect of their lives. But I still like cards ... and casseroles. And I will always treasure traditions.

The holiday season is one of the most exciting times of the year. Though our celebrations are amid sun and sand rather than snow, there is no question the Christmas spirit of Neapolitans certainly matches that of our far-flung neighbors to the north. There are so many festive events to put on the calendar this month that it’s nearly a blur. And we’re here to help you organize it all. You’ll find this issue sprinkled with entertaining advice and unique ideas for the best season yet. If you’re hosting a soiree, Jay Strongwater, designer of bejeweled home decor, shares some thoughts on page 31 about setting the holiday table and how candles can make any event special. Then turn to “Finds” on page 46, where we focus on the most glorious candles, whether you light them when entertaining or offer them as a glowing gift. Of course, it’s not quite the holiday season without the quintessential wreath, and you’ll find fresh twists on that holiday fixture on page 32. As you flip through the issue, you’ll also discover NI’s 12 Days of Christmas peppered throughout our pages (starting on this one, see below), as we thought we’d put a Naples twist on the traditional Christmas carol and its gift suggestions. And while the holidays are filled with celebrations, they are also a time for reflection. So, aside from our festive features (with more elegant party tips and delicious cookie recipes), we chose to reflect on the past year with the “N-List: Year in Review.” We combed through every issue from 2013, and on page 92 you’ll find our favorite trends and themes to revisit in wine and spirits, health and fitness, beauty, and food. We hope you enjoy it all—and then, beyond all the revelry, take time out from the hustle and bustle to reflect on your own special moments of the past year with the family and friends you hold dear. I know I will.

JAY STRONGWATER Setting the holiday table: “For color, I love golds mixed with creams and whites. There’s something fresh about it. And there should be a sense of fantasy. Why not set up a topiary on the dining room table and hang a few ornaments from there?”
Every bejeweled piece of home decor designed by Jay Strongwater exudes a sense of whimsy. With a background in high-fashion jewelry, the New York-based designer now focuses squarely on home decor, never missing a chance to add glittering detail to his creations. “What I find fascinating is being able to create something with your hands,” Strongwater says. “Growing up, that’s what I loved to do.” Today, he is known for elevating ordinary items—like the picture frame or table clock—to extraordinary status. In an interview, he shares insight on setting the holiday table, decor advice for seasonal parties and what he’s working on next.
Party decor advice: “If you lower the lights and add a lot of candles, it says something special and unique is happening. For holiday displays, I like to mix old and new pieces for a sense of depth and history. I put lights in the garland and add lots of ornaments. We also bring out a large glass apothecary jar and fill it with [gifts] in wrapped boxes—how wonderful it is that when guests leave they can reach in and pick out a little holiday gift.”
Inspiration for his latest creations: “A lot of times one piece leads to another, like we had the idea for a tree of life—a carving of a tree with little frames hanging on the branches. We then took the same idea and built upon that as inspiration for our new menorah (pictured, top right) in the holiday collection. I was also inspired seeing beautiful, old decorative Chinese pieces in museums, which was an influence in another new collection called Chinoiserie (pictured, above).”
&
What’s next: “Textiles; working in fabric is new for us. We start with drawings we’ve used for a picture frame or candlestick and see how we can interpret them with silk threads on velvet, doing embroidery work and adding beads and crystals.” Looking ahead: “I would love to work our way into personal accessories, whether it’s embroidered scarves or beautiful evening handbags. I also want to do more furniture, which is something our collectors find fascinating and I enjoy doing. It’s a challenge.” —Teri Evans

Dressing up the holiday wreath, one of the mainstays of the season, is a way to celebrate tradition and make a festive statement right out of the gate. For a twist on nature, Grace Lakes Florist, Naples, created a mosscovered wreath (left) with echeveria cactus and other succulents, dried lichen, aloe, fresh curly willow and holiday adornments. Owner April Wood also turned on the Southern charm with a wreath (above) of fresh miniature magnolia leaves, preserved hydrangea, natural cotton boughs and gold-encrusted magnolias to last through the season.

Naples style maven Marilyn Hellman found that the 1,000 square feet of her original Marilyn’s Distinctive European Fashion was too small to meet her needs. She's tripling in size and moving a couple of doors away to 375 Fifth Avenue South. The extra room will allow for a wider selection of dresses, sportswear, unusual hats and other accessories. In addition to more luxurious dressing rooms, the shop will accommodate a 24-foot runway for fashion shows wired for lights and sound. “We will also have extra room for our popular public and private seminars,” Hellman says. She expects the new shop to open early this month, just in time for holiday shopping. (marilynhellman.com) —K.S.
Bring your camera and head to the Naples Christmas Parade on December 10. The route begins on Broad Avenue, moves onto Third Street South and then Fifth Avenue South and wraps up on Eighth Street South. (239-213-7120) At the Village on Venetian Bay enjoy a festive Snow Show, holiday carolers and more on December 7, 14 and 21. Snow show starts at 7 p.m. On December 12, the annual holiday Boat Parade returns to light up Venetian Bay, plus carolers, a magician and a face painter for the kids. (239-403-2202) Finally, gather the family on December 31 for a spectacular New Year’s Eve Celebration with music on Third Street South followed by fireworks at the Naples Pier. When you give this idea of movement to a product, it seems like, at least for me, it gives a kind of soul to the product.
By Jennifer Pfaff Your furniture designs are inspired by speed and movement. How is this conveyed in your aesthetic? When you give this idea of movement to a product, it seems like, at least for me, it gives a kind of soul to the product. It’s a little bit like when you take a picture of someone running. The picture is frozen, but you can see the person is making an effort; there is a dynamic attitude and idea of movement. How did you transition from vehicle to furniture design? I feel like designing anything is just a question of time and meeting the right
people. I was never trying to make connections. I’ve always met someone by accident, and it just so happened the person liked my work. This is what happened with Roche Bobois, when I met the owner, Francois Roche. He was really convinced—more than I was—that I would be able to design very nice pieces of furniture.
What Roche Bobois designs are you proudest of? The collection Speed Up is something that I’m quite proud of because, first of all, it really represents my style in the world of furniture. The second thing is it is still in production and yet still a very successful collection. This has given me a lot of satisfaction, to know I can make something creative, personal and emotional, and there are people who like it and want to live with it and be part of it.
Have you found designing furniture challenging? I think a chair is something that is quite hard to design because it’s directly connected to the body, and therefore it has to be pleasant to use. It’s not that easy to design a very beautiful and modern chair that is at the same time very comfortable. It’s the same for a sofa or an armchair.
What’s next for you? I feel really ready to design other things, like shoes for ladies. To me, it’s an important element of an outfit. It’s such an erotic piece—and such a technological piece—and so aerodynamic. The leg of a woman is full of very sensual curves and nice shapes, and I think the shoe should be an extension of the natural sensuality of the body of a woman. «

Escape
Castaway MODERN By Jennifer Pfaff
Few flights are as scenic as this. The eight-passenger Tradewind plane hums above an azure ocean, passing over the occasional rocky landmass. Now and then, a rainbow appears—then disappears as quickly as it is spotted. Suddenly, it comes into view: an island blanketed in green, dotted with red roofs and outlined by clusters of white sailboats. They are lured to the same place we are, a

dichotomous destination at once remote and popular, carefree and luxurious. St. Barths, officially Saint BarthĂŠlemy, is part of a collection of islands in the Caribbean belonging to France. Named for Bartolomeo, the brother of Christopher Columbus, who discovered it in 1493, the eight-mile island has been a French property since its settlement in 1648, with the exception of a nearly 100year period when it was owned by Sweden.

Its Swedish heritage is subtly revealed in the island’s historic architecture and landmark names, including its capital city, Gustavia. In modern years, St. Barths has been a secluded playground for affluent travelers since David Rockefeller purchased property on the island in 1957. Like Naples, its high season is winter, particularly New Year’s, when vehicles crowd the narrow, curvy roads that hug the mountainous terrain. Getting there is part of the adventure. It starts with a heart-pounding rush from the quick-

drop landing at Gustaf III Airport, whose short runway begins at the base of a steep hilltop and ends by the ocean. Wary fliers can opt for a ferry ride from a nearby island, like St. Maarten. St. Barths has a handful of exclusive resorts, but to experience the ultimate luxury escape there is no better stay than in a villa. These private rental homes could be anything from a one-bedroom cottage to a five-bedroom modern mansion with living-room-sized closets. The plethora of options means visitors can find a vacation home that perfectly complements their needs and taste, whether they desire a mountaintop house with a working office, a beachside location with a garage, a chic Asian abode with a koi pond, or a West Indies family home with a state-of-the-art kitchen. Sibarth Villa Rentals manages more than 260 of the island’s villas. A family-owned company founded in 1975, Sibarth has served celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Tom Hanks, Steven Seagal, Johnny Depp and Russell Simmons. It is the only one on the island that provides a 24-7

Traditionally, Caribbean works have dominated the art scene in St. Barths. Many villas hang the paintings of Antoine Heckley, known for his window-view depictions of the island. Yet the artistic landscape is becoming edgier. American street artist Alec Monopoly's iconic graffiti is seen throughout Gustavia. Space SBH, a popular gallery in the town, shows works from contemporary artists such as Dominique Rousserie. Based in St. Barths, Rousserie uses natural island finds, such as goat skulls and feathers to create tropical pieces with a modern twist, like a discarded turtle shell that shows a map of the island, carved using dental tools. The artist, who has exhibited at Art Basel, also experiments with futuristic materials. The Smoking Room, for instance, is a laser-cut aluminum iridite submarine sculpture. (dominiquerousserie.net)

personal concierge to cater to guests’ every whim, whether it’s reserving a rental car, arranging a romantic setting for a marriage proposal or just ensuring Nutella is in the kitchen pantry. Truly, staff will heed any request—“so long as it’s legal,” assures Sibarth CEO Ashley Lecour. The personalized service begins immediately upon arrival. A Sibarth driver greets you at the airport with bottled water and whisks you to your villa. You’re hungry after a long day of travel, which is why Sibarth has prestocked the fridge with charcuterie and cheeses, breakfast items and Champagne. A shelf in the bedroom holds your favorite novels at your request, and the bathroom is outfitted with Hermès products. A hallway closet is brimming with
plush beach towels, sunscreen and beach bags. You’ve never felt more at home despite being so far away from it, and that’s the point. Island activities revolve around simple yet luxe relaxation, such as lounging by your private infinity pool while listening to mourning doves coo. Painting watercolors of the natural scenery is a way to bond with the family, while children are entertained by chasing lizards among cacti. Of course, the main draw in St. Barths is its velvet-sand shoreline, which is never far. Petit St. Jean is a popular spot, as the lake-like water is ideal for children. La Saline has choppier waves, and Gouverneur Beach is a picturesque alcove with rocky cliffs. The tiny island has always protected its slice of paradise. Laws designate green zones—areas that cannot be built upon—ensuring this idyllic destination will never become too commercial. Traffic lights don’t exist. And the panoramic views of blue sky blurring into miles of Caribbean Sea make all who visit feel disconnected from reality—a sensation many vacationers long for and the reason for coming here. Gustavia offers more sightseeing, including a thriving nightlife. Peek inside historic churches, wander by the fish market, admire vessels at the harbor and shop. Anything goes in St. Barths as far as fashion is concerned—you can dress up or go barefoot for a week—as illustrated by the eclectic mix of high-end and casual boutiques. Restaurants, like everything else on St. Barths, operate on island time, but the local NAPLESILLUSTRATED.com | DECEMBER 2013

French-Caribbean cuisine is worth the slow service. Eddy’s, an island institution since 1995, serves standout Creole dishes like goat curry and wahoo sautéed with ginger. Stop at a local boulangerie for croissants in the morning, and enjoy lunch on the beach at La Gloriette, a casual joint in Grand Cul-de-Sac. In the evening, dine at Maya’s Restaurant, a waterfront establishment in Gustavia that incorporates local produce like chayote to create a different menu every day. Complement your meal with Planter’s Punch, a fruity, rum-based cocktail that is the island’s unofficial drink. Most restaurants also offer complimentary after-dinner rums in
flavors like passion fruit, vanilla and ginger. When it’s time to bid the island adieu, the flight presents a different view—or perhaps a different feeling. As the plane flies away, St. Barths resembles the island from Castaway. The difference, however, is you didn’t want to be rescued. (sibarth.com) «

Though its location on Ocean Drive might suggest late-night parties and throngs of beautiful people hanging about, The Betsy is much more than that. The historic hotel on the street’s quieter north end has focused on year-round cultural programming since it reopened in 2009. And this Betsy is no dilettante: Every arts and letters program held here has an air of authenticity and an emphasis on true enrichment. For Art Basel, when the international art set descends upon Miami Beach, it is only logical The Betsy should pull out all the stops. A number of exhibitions will be hosted throughout the hotel, with many artists in residence, starting the week prior to the event. For collectors and the art-curious, this will be one of the main places to see and be seen. Here’s a taste of what to expect: ● “William Kentridge: 20 Works from ‘Universal Archive’” (Lobby Salon)—Kentridge, originally from South Africa, has exhibited his drawings and prints, and premiered his animated films, on a world stage. ● “Christopher Cozier: Commissioned Works in the Light Boxes” (B Bar)—The Trinidadian artist, who will be in residence during Basel, works in various media, including video, performance, drawing, printmaking and installation. He also is an accomplished writer and considered among the Caribbean’s most important voices. ● “Habits” (Annex Galleries)—Curated by Saul Ostrow and Lidija Slavkovic, this installation of works by emerging New York and Miami artists will focus on the formation of habit in artistic practice. Both Slavkovic and Ostrow will be in residence during Basel and will host the conversations. ● “The Girls of Baltimore” (Underground Gallery, Rooftop, Ocean Court, Betsy Soapbox)—This project embracing folk art, ethnic traditions, pop culture and social justice is curated by Leslie King Hammond, who will be in residence during the event. In the Garden
Even Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is getting in on the Basel action. On December 1, Brazilian artist Hugo França will debut his functional design pieces at the garden—a perfect setting, considering the organic nature of França’s work. The artist uses reclaimed wood from felled or dead trees to create furniture objects that transcend function to reach the realm of visual art (above). His sculptural chairs are particularly compelling. Through May 31. (305-667-1651, fairchildgarden.org)
Art lovers headed to Miami for Art Basel are in for a bonus this year: The much-anticipated, brand new Pérez Art Museum Miami will open its doors December 4, the day before Basel begins. After a $220 million renovation, the city’s beloved art museum will be unveiled with a new look—and a new name, thanks to an endowment from art collector and real estate mogul Jorge Pérez. He donated $20 million in cash and $20 million of his private collection, a gift that resulted in the museum’s name change. “I felt an obligation to give more to the arts,” Pérez says. “And I felt that my collection should be public, to enhance the education of others.” PAMM will focus on the works of artists from North America, South America and the Caribbean in a permanent collection titled “Americana.” The museum’s 2013-14 lineup includes a kickoff exhibition by famed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei; “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” will run from opening day through March 16. Leann Standish, PAMM’s deputy director for external affairs, urges visitors to make a day of their visit and take advantage of the museum’s waterfront location, including its hanging gardens around the first-level terrace and an outdoor café overlooking the water. MODULAR LIVING AS ART La Maison au Bord de l’Eau (house on the edge of the water), a concept house by French architect/designer Charlotte Perriand, raised many eyebrows when it was introduced in 1934 as part of a competition for L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui magazine. For years, the innovative dwelling for holidaymakers, which focused on modular design accessible to the mass market, remained at the conceptual stage—until now. Louis Vuitton is bringing the concept to life as part of Design Miami. On December 3, the home

will debut as a design satellite at The Raleigh Hotel and will remain open until December 8. The team at Louis Vuitton constructed the structure using archival drawings and sketches from the Perriand architectural firm. Perriand’s work also has inspired LV’s Spring/ Summer 2014 collection, titled Icônes. Her simplicity, use of color, modern design aesthetic and ideas on modular living inform the super-graphic collection, whose launch will coincide with the unveiling of La Maison. —D.N. For Shirlene Elkins, it could very well be Christmas in July. Or August. Or September. She’ll snap up presents for friends and family throughout the year, as she always has the holiday in the back of her mind. By the time most people start taking out their Christmas decor the day after Thanksgiving, Elkins has already finished. In the more than 20 years she and her husband, Bob, have lived in Naples, one thing that’s a given is they’ll throw a fantastic soiree (or, if their friends are lucky, several). Here’s how Elkins, a local philanthropist and former owner of a Washington, D.C., catering company, puts her best holiday foot forward—and you can, too.

It is never too early The minute you decide to host a holiday gathering, start planning it. If you’re considering catering, Elkins recommends having a company come to your house to write up a proposal. Even if you end up going the DIY route, she says, those meetings can be very helpful. To guarantee that wow factor everyone is after, Elkins says party furniture and linens are a must—and if renting, focus on the linens. “No one sees the tables, but everyone looks at the linens,” she says.

CMYK Picking a theme is a fun way to inspire decor. For Elkins, the more whimsical, the better—and she has a weakness for Santas.
Start with a bold statement Make sure the first impression of your party is unique and festive. For example, you can have someone at the door passing out a signature drink. “It gets guests right in the mood, as soon as they get out of the car,” Elkins says. Like eggnog? Put your own twist on that. Like candy canes? Get in the spirit with a minty concoction. It’s a deliciously easy way to make a bold impression.

Go beyond the bouquet While fresh-cut flowers always look beautiful, consider adding groups of potted plants to get an authentic look with major seasonal staying power. Last year when Elkins had the idea for poinsettia centerpieces, her husband suggested she buy way more than necessary and use extras as decor. She brought home 100 plants and lined the foyer, creating a garland effect. For the party, she moved a few onto the round tables and arranged them with candles.
Break the party into pieces If your guest list is too large for much one-on-one attention, try hosting backto-back dinner parties that offer your guests a choice of dates and then assign them to a night. That way, you entertain two intimate groups while keeping most of the prep work and effort in the same time period. “I’m a firm believer that good things come in small packages, and lately, I’ve liked that idea for parties, too,” Elkins says. Another option is to throw a progressive dinner with friends where guests move from one house to another in a single night. Each host then
062-feat shirlene-1213.indd 65
only has to focus on hosting one aspect of the party, whether it’s appetizers, the main course or dessert.
Think outside the (gift) box Since it’s the season of giving, rather than handing out favors, consider the other kind of giving Naples is known for. Make a donation in everyone’s name to charity. Better yet, print on the party invitation that in lieu of a Secret Santa, guests should bring a gift to be donated to a local nonprofit, such as The Salvation Army of Collier County. If you must send people home with a wrapped package, Elkins encourages putting yourself into it. “Anyone would love homemade chutney or fudge. A treat like that for each guest strikes the right note.” «

A collection of iconic Christopher Radko glass ornaments adorns the tree. Elkins has been a collector for decades.

Board a riverboat and sail to gaily decorated German villages for a twinkling yuletide, Old World-style. By Robert Ragaini
A-Rosa holiday cruises stop at quaint cities with festive markets.
082-feat germany-1213.indd 83
Every year with the arrival of Advent, or the month leading up to Christmas, the cities along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers in Germany become enchanting magical towns chockfull of traditional festivals, foods, drinks and music. Christmas markets pop up in these riverfront villages, filling the crisp, cold nights with twinkling lights and a high-spirited atmosphere. Choosing which of the many villages to visit—not to mention driving on the autobahn—can be daunting, so a great way to enjoy the sights is cruising with luxury and ease. We were delighted to find that the cruise line A-Rosa (a-rosa.de/en) added the Silva to its fleet in 2012 with amenities designed with North American travelers in mind. Different from standard cruise ships, riverboats are typically long and narrow. The Silva, at 443 feet long and 37 feet wide, offers cabins that are relatively spacious, with 312-square-foot NAPLESillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2013

To help make traveling even more carefree, A-Rosa cruises are truly all-inclusive. ● Round-trip air, from North America, plus transfers, gratuities, port charges and taxes. ● Open bar throughout the ship, stocked with everything from coffee and tea to wine, beer and cocktails. ● Complimentary port excursions. ● Open dining with buffet meals during the day and a fine-dining menu at dinner. ● Bicycles to use on shore excursions.
balcony suites, 226-square-foot junior suites and two-bed cabins of 156 square feet. Plus the dining room is large and bright. Another element that makes the Silva exceptional is SpA-Rosa, with massage rooms, a relaxation area, a salon and a gym. It also has a steam room and sauna with a one-way picture window offering sweeping views of villages, forests and meadows, often sparkling with white snow. The company offers seven-, eight- and 14-night holiday cruises with itineraries designed to dazzle travelers with the sights and sounds of Germany, Austria, Hungary and other European countries during the holidays. The Silva’s Christmas Market itinerary includes stops at Frankfurt, Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim and other places in and around Germany. These traditional markets have roots dating back to the fourteenth century, when fairs were set up to sell food and supplies for the long winter ahead. Today, with vendors’ stalls dotting the quaint streets and squares, revelers take in twinkling lights, evergreens and other customary decorations as the scents of roasting chestnuts, baked apples and gingerbread waft through the air. Clockwise from top left: A snowy scene on the river; the A-Rosa Bar; a cabin in the Silva; another ship in the A-Rosa fleet; the Silva dining room.

While at the Christmas markets, visitors can skip the usual holiday shopping at the mall back in the States and buy local handcrafted goods, such as wooden figurines, toys, marionettes and carvings, as well as candles and lambskin slippers. As all the walking and browsing in the cold air whets the appetite, there are many tasty treats—such as sizzling sausages (a.k.a. wursts) ranging in size from a couple of inches to over a foot long, deliciously complemented by German beer, or better yet, steaming mugs of hot mulled wine spiced with cinnamon and cloves. Following a day of shopping and sightseeing, it’s a treat to stroll “home” to enjoy a fine dinner, then relax in the ship’s cozy lounge for a nightcap before turning in for a restful sleep. Visions of sugarplums may invade your dreams as you anticipate your stop at the next town’s festival. In 2012 the A-Rosa Silva was named Cruise Guide magazine’s River Boat of the Year. While the ship is new, it does have something in common with the centuries-old Christmas markets—it induces gemütlichkeit, a sense of well-being and cheerfulness that pervades the holiday season. «
This month’s Christmas market cruise aboard the Silva visits eight cities along the Rhine, all bedecked with holiday shine.

Admission to one of the most exclusive girl’s nights out this holiday season is finite but not exactly simple—buy a ticket and bake eight dozen cookies. Since 2006 Ursula Boyd and four of her friends have hosted a cookie exchange, a perennially sold-out fundraiser to support the financial aid fund for Seacrest Country Day School, a leading private academy in Naples. The party is held at a host’s house each year, and the guest list is cut off at 30. Moms wear cocktail dresses and relish a catered feast, live music, games, and, of course, cookies (everyone takes home nearly 100). The night was born as a way to have fun while giving back, but what it has done is drawn people closer. Helen Ruisi, Seacrest’s CFO, has been to all but one of the previous seven events. “I don’t know another word to describe it other than sweet,” she says. “People obviously put a lot of effort into the cookies. They’re labors of love—you think of memories and the people you’re baking them for.” We explore the sisterhood of five smart, sophisticated moms behind the annual cookie exchange and get a taste of their yuletide treats.

Snow Patrol
For Kari Wagner, the past few years have been an adventure in desserts. “My daughter and I like to create things. We’ll paint together, cook together. We have that commonality,” she says. The two experimented with potato candies and no-bake cookies for the first cookie exchanges she co-hosted, but had less-than-desirable results. “Those were awful, they looked awful—never doing those again,” Wagner says. But she knew she found a winner with the delicious peanut butter-chocolate melting snowmen. Wagner smiles as she recalls her daughter pointing out how the cookies were also appropriate because snowmen would indeed melt in Florida.

“They say if you marry a Greek man, you become Greek,” jokes Elaina Chintakis, who, with long dark brown hair and Italian roots, could easily fool anyone. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the story of my life.” This year Chintakis is making almond-accented kourabiedes, one of the first Greek cookies she learned to bake. Chintakis and her husband, Nick, joined the Seacrest community right around the launch of the cookie-swap fundraiser. It was the first school they toured and the last. Over the years, she’s been on the hosting committee and invited other friends to attend the event, many of whom are now devotees.

On a Roll
The cinnamon-and-chocolate rollups that Daryl Sissman bakes bring up fond memories, as she inherited the recipe from her grandma Rose. “She was always baking,” says Sissman, a first-time host and longtime baker. “She was very specific for how the dough should be cut and the right amount of chips that had to be placed perfectly on each triangle.” Sissman says it’s the heart behind this fundraiser that has made the biggest impression on her. “I’m part of this because I believe in the message and donating to the financial aid program,” she says. “The idea of community is very important to Seacrest. It’s a sense of togetherness.”

When Ursula Boyd and her family landed at Seacrest eight years ago, Boyd volunteered to work on the Gala for Treasures, the school’s largest fundraiser. At the time, she and two committee members were racking their brains for creative auction items when Boyd suggested a cookie-swap party. People could reserve a spot through the auction or purchase tickets later on. “We had 30 women sign up off the bat, so the school said, let’s start a tradition.” Boyd says the frosted confections she contributes to the event are softer than typical sugar cookies because of the sour cream in her great-grandmother’s recipe.

Shortly after Melissa Kruk moved to Naples from New Jersey in 2011, she met Ursula Boyd, who later approached her to join the crew of hosts. “All I heard was ‘meetings, eight dozen cookies and holiday time,’ and I thought, oh gosh,” she says with a laugh. “It is work, but it doesn’t feel like work because we have so
much fun.” Kruk bakes Italian pizzelles, based on a recipe from her friend Trudy. When Melissa’s husband was traveling a lot for work, she says Trudy would visit all the time. “On one early trip her carry-on was so heavy, I thought what the heck did she pack? It turns out she brought a pizzelle iron to make a fresh batch here.” The recipe has since become a Kruk family favorite.

YEAR IN REVIEW Beyond the holidays, December is a time to relish everything we’ve enjoyed throughout the year before we close the chapter and forge ahead. In our year in review, we bring you all the highlights of the past season, including decadent foodie trends, wines and spirits to savor, unique ingredients for your beauty regimen and local venues to get pampered and fit. Aerial Yoga Whisk yourself into a new workout regimen with AntiGravity Aerial Yoga at Emilie Bromley’s Naples studio (pictured left), which features a silk hammock to exercise in mid-air. The method was created by a former dancer in New York and has since soared in popularity. We liked its promise to be easy on the joints, plus the upside-down poses for spinal decompression are said to help alleviate backaches. (239-404-8127)

The beautiful scenery in Naples is a big draw for cyclists, and we tracked down a bevy of local spots to help you find your way. For rentals and other offerings, try Naples Cyclery (naplescyclery.com), Bike Route (bikeroutenaples.com) and Trek Bicycle Store (trekbikesflorida.com). Bonita Bike & Baby (bonitabikeandbaby.com) delivers rentals to your doorstep. And to discover new routes and local events, head to Naples Pathways Coalition (naplespathways.org).
The Art of Healing A massage method that gained traction this year among therapists is the Active Release Technique (ART), which uses specific motions to increase blood flow and decrease pain. Tabatha Petersen, Naples Massage & Neuromuscular (239-325-9410), Dr. Danny Porcelli, XOC Chiropractic, Naples (239-260-5907) and Talayna Fortunato, Elite Physical Therapy, Naples (239653-9586) are among those trained in the technique locally.
Salty Savior The air you breathe can affect your health, and a dose of salty air may be just what you need. The Salt Cave in Naples simulates the natural healing environment of a traditional salt cave in Eastern Europe. The process, called halotherapy, is said to be most beneficial for those who suffer from allergies, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections, emphysema and even snoring. Aside from halotherapy, services include salt scrubs, mineral body wraps and more. (saltcave.us, 239-403-9170)

It is no secret olive oil delivers a wealth of benefits in the kitchen, but its moisturizing properties are also a boon for your scalp. Whether in a conditioner, hot-oil treatment or finishing product, the oil is rich in vitamin E and can add shine, ameliorate dandruff and treat split ends. In March, Kiehl’s oliveoil-infused products debuted in Southwest Florida at Dillard’s, Naples. The line is also now at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom in Waterside Shops, Naples.
Though long prized for its calming effect, the benefits of lavender go beyond relaxation to include antibacterial and detoxifying properties. Our picks: Caswell-Massey lavender hand cream ($15, Gattle’s, Naples); Pura Botanica Lost in Lavender Botanic Bath Infusion ($40, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples) and Avalon Organics Lavender Luminosity Revitalizing Eye Gel ($21, Whole Foods Market, Naples)
Flawless Finish We showcased a new wave of multitasking creams this summer, loaded with silicone to soften the appearance of lines and minimize pores. Some to try: Repêchage Vita Cura Opti Lift Serum for a wrinkle-busting six-hour lift and Repêchage Hydra Dew Illuminating Cream Mask (Philip Douglas Salon, Naples); Suki Targeted Bio-Brightening Face Serum ($83, sukiskincare .com); and Merle Norman Expert Touch Finishing Spray to lock makeup in place (Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio, Naples).

Products we loved: Chanel 1932 with jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang ($230 for 200 ml, Nordstrom, Naples); L’Eau du Trente-Quatre by Diptyque, with citrus, lavender and a touch of spice ($100 for 50 ml, Saks Fifth Avenue, Naples); Dahlia Noir by Givenchy, a fresh floral with notes of rose ($84 for 100 ml, La Femme Perfumery, Naples); and Lemon Tart, Elderflower and Gooseberry concoctions from the Sugar & Spice Collection by Jo Malone ($60 for 30 ml, Saks Fifth Avenue). YEAR IN REVIEW
Chef’s Table In the quest for new haute gastronomy, the concept of the chef’s table has certainly evolved. Foodies will pay handsomely to witness a chef’s handiwork. In Naples, Sea Salt (seasaltnaples.com) offers its table to a minimum of eight people for eight courses at $150 per person (wine pairings extra). Chef Fabrizio Aielli will work with you to customize the menu, but part of the fun is the element of surprise.
Inventive Mac and Cheese
foodie trends
Gourmet versions of this childhood comfort food appear on menus across the Paradise Coast. Our picks: The shrimp mac appetizer at Verdi’s, Marco Island (verdisbistro.com) and Bistro 821, Naples (bistro 821.com). Meanwhile, The Capital Grille, Naples (239-254-0640) also elevates the dish using campanelle pasta and lobster meat.
Ideal Indulgence
Macaron Mania The macaron became the main attraction in local shops and cafés centered solely on the confections. Le Macaron (lemacaron-us .com) opened boutiques in Miromar Outlets, Estero, and Mercato., Naples. Local baker Marie Tascher sells her line, Gourmandises (239-595-5600), at the Third Street South Farmer’s Market. Or, take a macaron class at Normal Love Confections’ Fort Myers location (normanloveconfections.com), which starts again in March 2014.

When it comes to flavorful dishes, indulgence need not be sinful. That’s the idea behind fine-dining restaurants taking a page from the quick-serve spots and revealing calorie counts. For example, Seasons 52, Naples (239-594-8852), states that every delicious dish has fewer than 475 calories. The menu’s array has included typically decadent foods such as goat cheese ravioli and mini Key lime pie.
94
When the temperature spiked this summer we picked up a penchant for SnöBars (snobarcocktails.com), the refreshing 100-calorie grown-up popsicle with the exact alcohol content of cocktails they’re named after, such as a cosmopolitan. We found them at the Waldorf Astoria Naples. Feeling creative? Find recipes to whip up your own grown-up pops at naplesillustrated.com/grownuppops.

Bordeaux This year we examined the attractive, accessible bottles of Bordeaux on the scene, starting with the Cru Bourgeois of the Médoc. Sure bets from the 2009 vintage include châteaux Pibran (Pauillac), D’Angludet (Margaux), Lilian Ladouys (St. Estephe) and Potensac and Rollan de By (both Médoc). With a full-bodied profile, these wines tend to have high levels of Cabernet Sauvignon. Another favorite group is the second labels of the Classified Growths, typically with grapes from younger vines. Our picks from 2009: Les Tourelles de Longueville (Château Pichon-Longueville), Ségla (Château Rauzan-Ségla) La Croix de Beaucaillou (Château Ducru-Beaucaillou) and Les Pagodes de Cos (Château Cos d’Estournel).

Dessert Wines When you're ready to embrace dessert wines, the Wines of the Quarts de Chaume in the Loire Valley and the late-harvest Reislings of Germany’s Mosel region are honeyed gold. Along with the red wines of Médoc, the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes were ranked in France’s official Classification of 1855. The only property designated as a Superior First Growth is Château d’Yquem, which has been making wine since the early eighteenth century. For an extravagant splurge, a bottle of the 1881 will cost you about $120,000.
Whiskey Trails When the Derby came around we traced some of the world’s greatest whiskies. On the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, you’ll find Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve, with facilities off the Blue Grass Parkway. Of course, the American Whiskey Trail is larger in scope, ranging from George Dickel and Jack Daniel’s in Tennessee to the ultimate bit of Americana, George Washington’s restored distillery in Mount Vernon.

New York Wines This summer we relished the Empire State’s diverse wine regions, which include nearly 325 wineries. The Hudson River Valley and Catskills region has more than 40 properties, including Brotherhood, America’s oldest winery. The North Fork of Long Island is New York’s best-known region with 60-plus wineries. Palmer Vineyards and Pindar Vineyards are the labels likely found in wine shops around the country. Our pick for a New York state of mind: Paumanok Vineyards' crisp Chenin Blanc, and age-worthy versions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. —NI staff «

Buried Treasures
Brillat-Savarin called them “the diamonds of the kitchen. Exotic, heady and perfumed with hints of garlic and spices, white truffles are truly gems of the earth. They are traditionally uncovered by specially trained dogs in Northern Italy throughout the fall. Piedmont (specifically Alba) is the epicenter for white truffles, but these delicacies are also found in Tuscany, Abruzzo and along the Istrian Coast in Croatia. Because of its rarity and short season, the white variety of this exotic tuber is far more expensive than the black, with whole-
sale prices averaging $3,000 per pound in the United States. No need to head to Alba to savor the precious truffles. Chefowner Gianfranco Loreti of Ristorante Ciao (ristoranteciao .com) in Naples imports truffles from Italy to create aromatic dishes such as Risotto Al Tartufo Bianco (arborio rice with porcini topped with shaved white truffles) and Sacchettini Al Tartufo Bianco (pasta pouches filled with ricotta and chopped pear blanketed with Alfredo sauce and dotted with shaved white truffles). Magnifico!

Chef Andy Hunter knew early on he was meant to create in the kitchen. His mother even kept a school paper from kindergarten when he boldly stated his vision for the future: a rock star or a chef. And it’s no wonder Hunter’s masterful dishes at The Bay House in Naples are often influenced by family, particularly his mom. Growing up, Hunter was always in the kitchen when she cooked— and is still inspired to reinterpret her recipes in the restaurant. In this interview, Hunter opens up about his childhood craving, his secret food obsession and what he’s like in the kitchen.
MOST EXOTIC MEAL: My first day of culinary school they fed us antelope. It tasted like pork. FAVORITE DISH TO COOK: It changes from day to day. We have a sweetbread dish I’m pretty fond of. It’s a warm lobster salad with sweetbread croutons, goat cheese cobbler, frisée lettuce and brown-butter vinaigrette. PET PEEVE: I am ridiculously structured when I cook. Everything has to be in the right place. If anything gets moved, I have to move it right back. FAVORITE SIDE DISH: Pommes Anna, anything with fried potatoes. CHILDHOOD CRAVING: Gooey Butter Cake. It’s ridiculously sweet, but I used to beg my mom to make it for me. We actually have it on the menu here as a Gooey Brown Butter Cake. It’s served with vanilla ice cream, white chocolate truffles and marinated strawberries. SECRET FOOD OBSESSION: I love Taco Bell! I’ve been working in a restaurant since I was 16 and Taco Bell is always open. It’s true. —Alicia Hauser 98

Lara Kastner
Designer Martin Kastner’s sleeve for Kim Crawford
Newton Vineyard’s eco-chic Puzzle Tray
A number of high-end wine and bar accessories have hit the scene just in time for the holidays. If you’re agonizing over what to get the imbiber who has everything (yourself included), consider one of these smallproduction gems. Classic cocktails are all the rage, and simplicity is back. The global popularity of the gin and tonic has never been higher. Fans of the drink won’t be able to live without the Bombay Sapphire Limited Edition Gin Wheel, a concept developed by the design firm AvroKo. This is the ultimate lazy Susan for the discriminating host or hostess. A base made of brushed stainless steel supports a revolving circular container of handcrafted, exotic walnut housing glassware, high-end bar tools, coasters, cutting boards and aluminum tongs, plus space for a variety of creative garnishes to customize drinks, from Thai lemongrass to Vietnamese black peppercorns. The mini G&T bar is complete with a liter bottle of Bombay Sapphire that fits perfectly in the middle. It’s available for $500 from thefutureperfect.com. Since its founding in 1977, Napa’s Newton Vineyard has been a pioneer in sustainability and ecological awareness, so it’s not surprising to see those principles extend into everything it does. Since 2009, winemaker Chris Millard has partnered on an annual series of “Eco-Chic” art objects. The 2012 creation was the Puzzle Tray, designed by the Chicago-based team of Bruce and Stephanie Tharp, named for the winery’s famous red Meritage blend. Only 112 of the handmade walnut trays, which simulate the layout of Newton’s vineyard map, were produced. The blocks of the tray become serving areas for cheeses, hors d’oeuvres or glasses of wine, and a corkscrew is contained in a “hidden cave”; $499, from newtonvineyard.com. We may have sent men to the moon, but it’s still tough to figure out how to keep a bottle of white wine cold outside the fridge. Fortunately, the Kim Crawford Cooling Sleeve ($149) has come to the rescue. It was

created by Martin Kastner, famed designer of “wine couture,” whose inventions have graced tables at Chicago’s Alinea and Le Bernadin in New York. The sleeve consists of custom-made circular gel packs wrapped around a series of moving metal links. When placed on the bottle (of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, of course), it automatically adjusts to the diameter. “I wanted a tool that brings excitement to the table,” says Kastner. The functional yet elegant design is bound to achieve another of his goals—to “spark conversation among friends who come together to enjoy a glass of wine.” The sleeve is available in a limited edition of 400 from kimcrawfordwines.com. It’s a dilemma as old as wine itself: How to enjoy a glass at home without committing to an entire bottle? If you love red while your partner enjoys white, it’s not easy to find a solution. Thanks to Greg Lambrecht, an inventor of medical devices, the answer may be at hand. Lambrecht spent 13 years perfecting the Coravin wine-access technology, which permits oenophiles to tap into bottles for a taste while keeping the remainder in perfect condition. Here is how it works: Simply put the device on the bottle, and it pushes a needle

through the cork. As wine comes out, argon gas is inserted to keep the wine fresh. Even wine critic Robert Parker approves. “Coravin is the most dramatic and transformational device ever developed to enhance our enjoyment and preservation of wine,” he says. The early results have been remarkable. The Coravin 1000 System, which includes the 1000 device, two pressurized capsules containing argon and a storage base, is $299 and can be purchased at coravin.com. «

Clint was a happy kid with a loving family and dreams of being a firefighter. But mixing with the wrong crowd led him down a destructive path that escalated to a devastating addiction to opioids and cocaine. After a drug arrest, his life began to unravel. The ensuing financial burden and mental, physical and emotional pain of nearly losing their son tore his family apart. When he was admitted to DLC for detox and Crossroads residential treatment, he was a 28-year-old broken man with a bleak outlook on life, but he was committed to his recovery.

The flurry of the holiday season is one of the most exciting times of the year, but it can also be the most stressful. Find some relief without breaking a sweat by trying Tai Chi, a low-impact exercise class that is based on an ancient Chinese martial art. Often referred to as “meditation in motion, the class includes a series of gentle movements performed slowly, with a focus on deep breathing. Naples Botanical Garden is the serene backdrop for Tai Chi on the Water Garden Stage Thursday mornings. (239-6437275, naplesgarden.org) Or, you can head indoors for Tai Chi with Dr. Joel Ying on Tuesday mornings at Love Yoga Center, Naples, which also offers a halfhour meditation class and a full-hour integrative relaxation class. Mane Event
Philip Douglas shares three hairstyle trends inspired by the fashion runways:
When it comes to color, rich titian hues, amber browns and buttery soft blondes are dominating this season. ● Textured layers just past the shoulder with a long, sideswept fringe plus a boost of sexy volume are the way to go if you have long locks. ● Shorter styles are also on trend in close silhouettes with bold colors and strong sculptured lines. —K.S. ●
To keep locks healthy and looking gorgeous all season long, a good hairbrush is essential. We asked mane man Philip Douglas, who has been styling celebs and Neapolitans for years in his namesake salon in Naples, for advice on making the right choice. “My favorite line of brushes is the Bio Ionic brand,” he says. “They are plastic-bristled, come in all shapes and sizes, and are remarkably gentle. They are negatively charged and infused with minerals that add shine, banish frizz and maintain moisture levels in any type of hair.” For fine, thin or fragile hair: Use an oval-domed, boar-bristle brush, which is gentlest on the hair and scalp, protecting against breakage. Boar bristles also help distribute natural oil throughout the hair. Aside from general styling, this brush is also good for smoothing flyaways. Looking for volume? Go with a round boar-bristle brush to shape the style and control frizz.. For thick, coarse or curly hair: Sturdy brushes with boar and plastic bristles (or all plastic) are best. One caution with plastic: avoid the double bristle (one long, one short) as well as bristles with a little plastic ball on the end, which can be damaging. Looking to straighten your locks? A large padded flat brush with medium-firm plastic bristles will cut volume. Large round brushes also help control volume while creating a straight, smooth style. Never detangle wet hair with a brush, says Douglas. Use a large, wide-tooth comb, such as a hand-cut, polished, vulcanized rubber comb by Philip Kingsley (philipkingsley.com). —Kat Smith
NI: Are all grains alike? Perlmutter: All grain foods contain carbs, but the ones that also contain the inflammatory chemical gluten—that’s wheat, oats and barley—deliver a double whammy. Of course, there is a place for, say, a half a cup of wild rice that has some carbs, but we try to limit carbs to 60 to 80 grams a day. What is the best diet for the brain? One that is lower in carbs and higher in good, natural fats like olive oil, nuts, seeds, grass-fed beef, wild fish—not modified fats, trans fats or hydrogenated fats. Impeccable brows frame the face for a subtle yet crucial element to looking your polished best. For gorgeous arches, visit Saadia Persad at Blush Aesthetics Studio, Naples. She is a master of the threading technique. The method is simple: a thread is twisted and pulled along an area of hair to be removed. It precisely catches and lifts one hair or several out from the root. The process is more comfortable and less irritating than waxing, plus it is chemical-free, so it can be done even if skin has been exposed to Retin A and other anti-aging products. While Persad says she focuses her artistry on beautifying eyes (threading, brow and lash tinting, lash lifts and extensions) she offers organic facials and other skin treatments, too, in the cozy, Hollywood glam-styled spa. The classic musical West Side Story hits the stage at Artis—Naples, bringing the star-crossed saga of Tony and Maria to life more than 50 years after its Broadway debut. This revival pays tribute to the musical’s originators— Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This version incorporates direction from Laurents and includes the totality of the original production’s score, along with the “Dream Ballet” that was cut from the movie version. Performances will be December 26–29. (artisnaples.org)

Soviet-Era Art Show
Don’t miss the opportunity to view 20 paintings from the vast collection of Soviet-era socialist realism artworks owned by the late Jurii Maniichuk and his wife, Rose Brady. The Gallery on Fifth at Mercato (artorg.net) in Naples will display these works in the exhibit “Rescued from the Flames,” December 11 through January 12. These pieces have never been exhibited in the United States and have not been seen since they were shown in the Soviet Union just prior to the country’s collapse in 1991. Most were acquired directly from the artists or their heirs by Ukrainian-American lawyer and collector Maniichuk in the 1990s when he worked in Kyiv, Ukraine. By collecting the paintings, Maniichuk likely saved them from destruction as Socialist realism paintings were largely discredited at that time. Tickets for the opening preview and reception December 11 are $20, $5 for students. (RSVP to GalleryOnFifth@artorg.net.)

When an animal is rescued, its needs are often critical and always immediate. That’s when Pat Murphy is called on most at Humane Society Naples. She might as well be on speed dial. Murphy has fostered nearly 250 kittens (often requiring round-the-clock bottle feeding), volunteered more than 10,000 hours, and become a major financial supporter of HSN. “When I see any little kitten or animal neglected, it hurts me to the core,” says Murphy, a part-time Naples resident who began volunteering in 2000 after she retired as an analyst with an investment management firm in Boston. Over the summer, Murphy and her husband, Jim, were the first to take part in HSN’s new charitable gift annuity, which allows donors to support a nonprofit while receiving a fixed payment for life. The couple has also made major contributions to HSN’s Spay/ Neuter Assistance Program and provided donations to name both of the kitten rooms. “What a horrible decision it is for people to have to make, when they come in with a sick or injured animal and have to put them down because they can’t afford to help them,” says Pat Murphy, who also brings kittens to local nursing homes for weekly visits. “I want to help people who come into situations like that.” Murphy, who has eight cats, ended up adopting some of the kittens she has fostered through HSN, a no-kill shelter, adoption center and vet clinic. One of them (aptly named Miss Daisy) was rescued from a car engine, while another had a paw amputated after being stuck in a drainage culvert. Murphy named him Miracle and couldn’t bear to let him go. Ultimately, she says, being part of the turnaround is what makes it all worthwhile. “Working with fosters is probably the most satisfying thing I have done,” says Murphy, also a member of HSN’s board of directors since 2006. “I’m having the time of my life.” —Teri Evans
