From the Editor The holidays inspire joy and reflection, whether we’re celebrating at home with loved ones or at one of countless festive events around town. It’s also a time when many are comforted by the gravitational pull of family traditions, while others will start new ones they hope will be followed by generations to come. In “A Festive Feast,” starting on page 60, Naples chefs share their favorite dishes for you to savor (and perhaps add to your traditional holiday meal). From delicious starters to a regal main course and new twists on popular sides, it is certainly a feast for the eyes. Of course, we couldn’t forget scrumptious desserts for a sweet ending. Every recipe is available online, so you can flip straight to the feast and then log on to start planning your own festive meal. In this Holiday Glamour issue, you’ll also find fashion and decor inspiration for the season, as well as gift ideas for just about everyone on your list. Haven’t yet found the perfect present for family and friends? Turn to “Toy Land,” beginning on page 76, for gift ideas that are sure to please everyone from tiny tots to tweens and fashionistas to power players. If you’re also hosting your own soiree (or two or three) this month, welcome guests with a grand entrance and elegant entertaining accoutrements, which you’ll find in Abode on page 107. Aside from the parties, the holidays are always known for being a season of giving, a time when we painstakingly search for the right gift because we know it will bring a smile to our loved one’s face—and as a result, brighten our own with the delight. Many Neapolitans will also donate time or money to several charities (not just during the holidays, but all year long) simply because it brings them joy to give back—whether it’s for family, friends, or the less fortunate in our community. That’s the true spirit of Christmas.

Protecting the River of Grass

HIAASEN: NO SURRENDER

The Everglades provide economic and recreational benefits to the state’s residents, as well as the water supply to one in three Floridians. The ecosystem is also home to 67 threatened or endangered species. As a result of development over the past century, the ecosystem has shrunk to less than half its original size, while agricultural pollutants have had a negative impact on indigenous plants and animals. Since 1993, the Everglades Foundation has led efforts to restore and protect the greater Everglades ecosystem. To support the cause, the Foundation presents “An Evening With Carl Hiaasen” December 4, featuring a lecture and book signing at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. (evergladesfoun dation.org)

With acerbic—and very funny—storytelling, Miami Herald columnist and novelist Carl Hiaasen skewers those he sees as behaving badly. The native Floridian’s satirical tales feature colorful antiheroes who battle equally colorful corrupt officials, medical miscreants, and other morally objectionable types. As humorous as his writing is, Hiaasen is serious about bringing to light those whom he believes inflict irreparable damage on the Sunshine State. He’s published 14 novels for adults, and a handful for young readers. His most recent young adult book, Skink: No Surrender, features his iconic character Skink, the eccentric, ex-Florida governor who lives in the swamp dining on road kill. We talked with Hiaasen, who will appear December 4 in Naples for the Everglades Foundation, about his passion to protect Florida’s natural riches. —Kat Smith NI: When were you first compelled to write about the diminishing natural environment in our state? The critically acclaimed and wildly popular British period drama series, Downton Abbey, will bid its final farewell after its sixth season. The show’s legions of fans are champing at the bit for the premiere of the final season later this month. Many of them plan to dress for the occasion at a special event, “Tea, Champagne & All That Jazz,” at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. If you wish to channel strong-willed Lady Mary Crawley, her younger, fun-seeking cousin Lady Rose Aldridge, or other members of the Crawley clan, Audrey’s, Naples (audreys-naples.com) has you covered, with an expansive selection of period fashions in its vintage showroom. Every year, shop owner Quenby Tilley brings in additional garments and accessories from the era to assist the many Downton Abbey devotees who wish to be styled for the show’s premiere party. The secret, she reveals, is culling pieces from different eras. “You don’t have to dress head-to-toe authentic vintage to make it look the part,” Tilley says. “You can literally shop the 1920s from several different eras.” In one vignette, pictured above, Tilley pairs original 1920s gowns (increasingly rare finds) with gorgeously ostentatious jewelry, headgear, and embellishments that span the decades, but resonate the period’s style. The Dowager Countess of Grantham would surely approve. —Liza Grant Smith

In recognition of the U.S. National Parks Centennial Celebration, the calendar features a dozen breathtaking images shot in Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, Key Biscayne National Park, and National Seashore Cape Canaveral. Each is accompanied by a story from Butcher, who passionately champions preservation of South Florida’s wetlands. (clyde butcher.com) —K.S.

Keep on TRUCKIN’ The professional chefs at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, Geoff Novins and Taso Banos, approached club leadership with a plan to expand the BGCCC culinary program. They proposed starting a food truck to be funded by individual, corporate, and grant donations. The goal: to give club youths experience in cooking arts and entrepreneurship while bringing delicious food to the people of Naples. Two years later, the shiny new Blue CanTEEN has rolled out, serving freshly made meals created from locally sourced ingredients. We’re not talking burgers and dogs here; dishes include items like a just-caught mahi filet on a bed of mixed-bean salad, and perfectly crunchy grouper tacos. The menu changes with the availability of fresh ingredients, but all items are priced at $6 or $7. The truck will be hitting various area farmers markets, festivals, and other stops all week long. Victoria Maxwell shares a message of hope.

Spreading Hope With

Humor

Mental illness isn’t usually associated with a laugh fest. Yet Victoria Maxwell (victoriamax well.com) doesn’t see that as such a stretch. The Canadian actress-turned-writer and public speaker effectively uses humor to educate and advocate for people affected by mental disorders. During her acting career in the ’90s, she had roles in projects starring Johnny Depp, John Travolta, and David Duchovny. When diagnosed with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and psychosis, however, she directed her energy into recovery. That ultimately led to the launch of her company, Crazy for Life Co., and to writing an award-winning one-woman show of the same name. “It dawned on me that my experiences

might be something people want to hear about,” she says. “What I saw was that there was a huge hunger for family members, as well as people with mental illness, to see themselves reflected, to have hope and humor around what can be a really challenging time.” Through her speaking engagements, she educates health-care professionals about the “insider’s experience,” and is often hired to help companies understand what their employees affected by mental disorders may be going through. Maxwell pokes fun to make people think in a different way. Her story engenders empathy and compassion, and helps others realize that people with mental illness and their family members are not so different. She will bring her message and disarming humor to the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Collier County Hope Shines Luncheon, December 8 (namicollier.org). Attendees will be inspired by her story. “When I wasn’t getting any treatment, it was very difficult. I had a hard time managing day-to-day life. Once I got good treatment, my life started flourishing,” she says. “The biggest thing is knowing that people who have mental-health issues do recover. Not just that they can, they do.” —Kat Smith

HOLIDAY SPIRIT

A hidden jewel, the Naples Preserve sits unassumingly at the corner of U.S. 41 and Fleischmann Boulevard, offering 9.5 acres of nature with two protected Florida upland habitats, pine flatwoods and oak-rosemary scrubs. Take a breather from hectic holiday shopping and contemplate the wildflowers, butterflies, birds, gopher tortoises, and other critters. An annual holiday celebration takes place December 11, 12, and 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. “The Hedges Family Eco-Center on the grounds will be festively decorated with trees and table-top displays with an environment/conservation theme, all contributed by local organizations,” says Ron Echols, a long-time volunteer at the preserve. The evenings will feature musical entertainment and light refreshments. Additional highlights include sunset boardwalk tours and special animal guests. (239-213-3020) —K.S.

Casual, Colorful Elegance WHO: Tamara Comolli, jewelry entrepreneur and founder of the Tamara Comolli Fine Jewelry Collection UPBRINGING: Born in Germany and raised in France, Germany, Gibraltar, and Spain STYLE: Boho-chic and luxurious hippie jewelry collections featuring symbolic shapes and colorful gemstones LATEST COLLECTION: Tulip Rings, with fallcolored gemstones WHAT’S COMING UP: Twentieth anniversary at Marissa Collections

Fine jewelry should be the epitome of the person wearing it. It should not look staged; it should portray the unique personality of the person.

BY ANNA BJORLIN NI: Did you grow up knowing you wanted to design jewelry? Comolli: It was a hobby for me early in life, but my parents told me there was no way I could turn it into a profession. I had to finish high school and go to university first. So I studied economics and jewelry stayed a hobby, but I was basically not allowed to turn it into a business until later, after my professional career in consulting and marketing. Finally, I decided to do it by myself. But I’m very grateful they forced me to get the professional background because I’m not sure if I could have managed to succeed in growing a company and making it an international brand without it. How did you develop your aesthetic? I wanted to create a collection you could build on. I noticed there were so many designs in the world of jewelry, but it was very difficult for clients to stick with a favorite because the new collections could not be combined. What is your connection with Naples? I first met Marissa Hartington from Marissa Collections more than 20 years ago in New York City, where my jewelry was on display in a showroom. She invited me to have a trunk show in Naples, and that’s when I fell in love with the city. I lived there for eight years and I could still go there every day. It’s so me—it’s laid-back, relaxed, and colorful, the epitome of my jewelry. Do you have a special interest in the Golisano Children’s Hospital, the beneficiary of this month’s event at Marissa Collections? We do charity work for children all over the world, and in December we feature one piece where 10 percent of the revenue is allocated for charity purposes, so this is a great opportunity to really show our support for the children.

View Tamara Comolli’s latest designs at Marissa Collections’ December patron event for the March 2016 Golisano Children’s Hospital Luau of Life. Comolli will also appear at Marissa Collections in February to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of her jewelry in Naples. (marissacollections.com)

Do you have a favorite piece? My current favorite piece is the signature bracelet—it’s a beautiful bracelet featuring our brand symbol, the drop, and it lays perfectly on the wrist. What do you like to do in your free time? Believe it or not, sitting on the beach is my favorite thing to do. I can sit there for an hour and just look at the ocean; it relaxes me. There’s water everywhere my stores are located, and no matter how cold it is, if you put me on a beach, I’ll go and swim.

living in the moment comes naturally. Days rarely stray from lounging under a thatchedroof beach cabana or ambling along the island’s contiguous lagoon. If visiting between May and September, the height of whale shark season, an experiential snorkeling encounter with the world’s largest extant fish is a must. Development exists solely across Holbox’s westernmost section. There, the hotels span the entire 1-mile width of the island and sandy roads lead from a Main Square to lanes of small shops and Caribbean-style wood shacks housing tour operators and no-shoes-required restaurants. Holbox’s unpaved highway ends at its easternmost structure, the boutique ho-

tel Las Nubes de Holbox (lasnubesdeholbox .com), where the upstairs master suites grant the best ocean views and superlative flamingo encounters. Slightly closer to “town,” the 12room Casa Sandra (casasandra.com) champions a delightful barefoot sophistication without tarnishing the old-school Mexican bucolic charm. Its exterior showcases iconic Mexican architecture, with whitewashed walls and a thatched-palapa roof, but its interiors, clad in hand-embroidered pillows and tapestries, imbue this paradisiacal boutique hotel with a familiar tinge of luxury.

Mexico City

Mexico’s capital bursts with the passion, colors, and flavors of the country’s 31 diverse states, offering a welcome urban retreat from the typical beachside circuit. While there’s no shortage of places to flash your pesos in the world’s eighth richest city, the wealth of free historic and cultural spectacles are the true highlights. Chapultepec, Mexico City’s Central Park equivalent, is peppered with worldrenowned museums such as the Museo Nacional de Antropología (mna.inah.gob.mx), home to the Aztec calendar stone Piedra del Sol and the fairy tale–like Castillo de Chapultepec. Teotihuacán, one of the largest pyramidal structures built in the pre-Columbian Americas, is just a short drive from the city center and is an impressive, lesser-known site that easily rivals Mexico’s more famous ruins. Mexico City is a mosaic of neighborhoods, or colonias. The boutiques, galleries, bistros, and cafés of chic districts like La Condesa, La Roma, and Polanco buzz with the country’s growing bourgeoisie. Come nightfall, check out the city’s highdesign eateries. For an evening of sophisticated dining, sample haute Spanish cuisine at Tezka (tezka.com.mx) in the Zona Rosa neighborhood or head to Polanco’s La Tecla (latecla.com.mx) for pursuits in creative modern Mexican gastronomy. San Miguel de Allende

The rogue city that helped launch the Mexican War of Independence is now making history as the country’s most glamorous destination. San Miguel de Allende, an eighteenthcentury colonial town in the heart of Mexico’s central highlands, sparkles with UNESCO World Heritage grandeur, captured in its colorful streets, stunning gardens, neoclassical monuments, neo-Gothic churches, and ba-

roque-style homes. Influenced by the region’s architectural customs, the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende (rosewoodhotels.com/en/sanmiguelde allende) was built like a traditional Mexican hacienda, with expansive rooms that surround either a central courtyard or aromatic fields of lavender. Arched domes lead from one building to the next, each corridor lined with art and ending at a different modern marvel. She racked up arrest after arrest and her life spiraled out of control. When Nichole entered the Collier County Drug Court program, she made the best choice of her life. She spent the next 15-months surrendering completely to the treatment process. She did the work and learned the tools. While in Crossroads Residential, she embraced the equine and art therapy, and yoga classes and flourished. Now sober for two years, Nicole has her son back and is expecting her “second chance”. High Road

luxury IN THE ROUGH Bentley unveils its new Bentayga, the world’s fastest, most luxurious, and most expensive SUV By Howard Walker Checking the options boxes when purchasing a new car always delivers a frisson of excitement. Do you stick with the stock 18-inch rims or spend the extra couple of grand for the 20s? Do you go with the $800 stereo or upgrade to the $1,500 model with more bells, watts, and whistles? Of course, I want it all. Slightly more consideration might be required when filling in the lengthy extras list for your new $229,100 Bentley Bentayga, the world’s fastest and most expensive SUV, heading to showrooms this spring. You’ll love the platinum Breitling dashboard-mounted clock, but you could upgrade to the optional Breitling Mulliner Tourbillon ticker for $234,000. Naturally, it’s a horological marvel. The tourbillon mechanism is what the watch industry quite rightly calls a “complication,” meaning it improves the precision of a watch by counteracting gravity-induced disturbances. In short, it makes it as accurate as a $10 digital Timex. 58

NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

This clock, however, is aesthetically superior—to say the least. Its case is handcrafted from solid 18-karat white or rose gold. You can also choose between an ebony or white mother-of-pearl face, both adorned with eight chunky diamonds. The party trick of this ticking pièce de résistance is how it winds. In the same way the mechanical watch on your wrist requires movement to keep it accurate, the Bentley clock has a self-winding mechanism that spins the entire clock three times every 15 minutes to keep it on time to a fault. That $234,000 price tag covers only the clock. Given the myriad other accoutrements, you’ll probably want to hire armed guards to protect your investment when the Bentley is parked. As for the Bentayga itself, you’re looking at a mechanical masterpiece equal to anything Breitling creates. Powered by a 600-horse-

power, twin-turbo, 12-cylinder engine, this 5,300-pound penthouse on wheels almost defies physics when it races to 60 mph from rest in four seconds or hits its top speed of 187 mph. Because SUVs are designed to play in the mud, the Bentayga’s complex 4x4 system has settings to tackle everything from mud, snow, grass, sand, and even that pesky, crunchy gravel on driveways leading up to Downton Abbey– style English country mansions.

POWER FILE It can also wade through water 20 inches deep, clear rocks that are more than 9 inches high, and tow a 7,700-pound trailer without breaking a sweat, perfect for when your showjumper needs transporting to Wellington. See it in the metal and it looks somewhat like Bentley’s Continental GT on steroids. It’s a handsome beast, though a bit predictable in its shape. Thankfully, it’s a million times easier on the eyes than the regrettable EXP 9F concept Bentley showed the world in 2012. Ultimately, it lacked the elegance, class, and distinctive style of, say, a long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography. The Bentayga awes when you open the door. This is Bentley at its bespoke, handcrafted finest: exquisite veneers, quilted leathers, and shimmery stainless-steel fixtures and fittings.

PRICE: From $229,100 ENGINE: 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 POWER: 600-hp TORQUE: 664 pound-feet TRANSMISSION: 8-speed automatic 0-60: 4 seconds TOP SPEED: 187 mph LENGTH/ WIDTH: 202.4/78.7 inches WEIGHT: 5,340 pounds WHY WE LOVE IT: Because no carmaker has ever built an SUV this expensive, this fast, and this luxurious.

The 22-way adjusting front seats deliver unparalleled comfort, while the individual rear pews (a bench is optional) power 18 different ways. Want tunes? The 18-speaker, 1,950-watt Naim audio system will happily oblige. This being Bentley, just ask and it shall be delivered. The company’s Mulliner bespoke

division will install a custom hamper set for picnics, crafted by royal furniture maker David Linley (grandson of King George VI) and complete with a Champagne chiller as well as custom china and crystal flutes. Speaking of the British Royal Family, Her Majesty will receive the very first Bentayga off the production line. It will join her Bentley State Limousine in the royal lockup. As for the Bentayga name, the jury is still out. According to Bentley, it comes from Roque Bentayga, the 4,642-foot mountain peak on Spain’s Canary Islands. At least it’s better than the Bentley Canary. «

Where the Art Is This month, the art universe will collide with the Magic City. The result: an art fair no collector can afford to miss. NI guides you through the divine madness of Art Basel. By Susie Stanton Staikos The contemporary art world shines a spotlight on Miami Beach this month when Art Basel returns for its fourteenth year. From December 2 to 6, thousands of visitors will enter the Miami Beach Convention Center to view works from 267 galleries representing 32 countries. “Fairs have changed the way collectors look at and consume art,” says Glenn Scott-Wright, director of London’s Victoria Miro Gallery, 2014 Art Basel attendees view a work from Galleria Continua

York’s Armory Show, Horowitz admires Art Basel’s focus on and dedication to quality as well as the high-level audience it attracts. “Art Basel is willing to think differently about how art fairs function in today’s global context and to continually evolve the fair,” Horowitz says, pointing out last year’s introduction of Survey, a sector dedicated to historical projects by respected artists who have been overlooked by the market.

LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN It all begins with two invitation-only opening days: a private viewing Dec. 2 and the Vernissage party preview Dec. 3. The doors open to the general public at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3 and at noon on subsequent days.

There are many ways to enjoy this important show, but even the most seasoned fairgoer can find navigating Art Basel Miami Beach challenging. Make the most of your visit with NI’s

Art Basel will showcase more than 200 galleries from near and far. Among the first-time exhibitors to check out are Brussels’ Vedovi Gallery, known for its secondary market of post-war and contemporary European and American art, and Mazzoleni Art, based in London and Turin, which will display works from prominent twentieth-century international artists. Also look for wider programs from regulars Andrew Edlin Gallery of New York, Kerlin Gallery of Dublin, and Mendes Wood DM of São Paulo. “Our booths are known for their beauty and being visually appealing,” says Sarah Gavlak, owner of Palm Beachbased Gavlak Gallery, which represents young and mid-career artists, particularly those whose work is more accessible. “I am not afraid of ‘pretty’ and ‘pleasure’ in art. In fact, I prefer it.”

Among the Galleries participants, 27 are selected for the Kabinett sector to present curated exhibitions within a designated space of their booths. These mini shows can highlight historical pieces, a group of artists under one theme, or an up-and-coming artist. Four Kabinetts worth catching: works by Michael CraigMartin—known for conceptual installations and colorful, contemporary paintings—from London’s Alan Cristea Gallery; the Parisian Galerie 1900-2000’s display of Appropriation works by Richard Pettibone, father of fashion designer Claire Pettibone; a collection of pieces by Dr. Lakra, a tattooist who creates art using found objects, from Mexico City’s Kurimanzutto; and pieces by Joseph Kosuth, known for conceptual displays and neon signs, on view by Italy’s Lia Rumma. The latest artworks to hit the industry are on view in the Nova sector: The 34 galleries here display pieces created within the last three years, and no more than three artists are exhibited in each Nova showcase. Don’t miss São Paulo’s Galeria Leme, where Aki Sasamoto, Luciano Figueiredo, and Sandra Gamarra will convert the booth into a fictitious museum that challenges the artist’s position within the art world.

The Positions sector brings to light new talent by allowing 16 emerging artists to display one major project. Discover the works of creators like Dan Bayles, a Los Angeles artist who paints semi-abstract landscapes; He Ziangyu, of Berlin and Beijing, who explores social concerns through his work; and Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz, a Berlin-based duo whose film examines historical moments.

Having debuted last year, Survey presents 14 historical projects across a variety of art themes. This year, visitors can view exhibitions of top artists like the late American watercolorist Charles Burchfield, on display by New York’s DC Moore Gallery; Peter Campus, a seminal American artist in the canons of new media and video art, from New York’s Cristin Tierney Gallery; Gianni Colombo, the late Italian artist known for his kinetic art, at London’s Robilant + Voena booth; Dorothy Iannone, known for her autobiographical erotic-themed works, from Berlin’s Peres Projects; and Wang Jinsong, who trained as an ink artist and has become one of China’s leading photographers of social commentary, from the Beijing Art Now Gallery.

Survey

Art isn’t something to just look at; it’s also something to talk about. Art Basel offers two programs for visitors to hear from professionals across the industry. A series of Conversations takes place daily, allowing artists, curators, critics, and collectors to offer guidance on their respective fields. In a more informal setting, Salon consists of short presentations in the form of talks and performances from Art Insiders.

Artists to Watch

Art basel Miami Beach is a hub for showcasing the work of emerging artists. Here, a few notables, some of whom will be showing at the fair— and in the United States—for the first time.

Gallery: SIM Galeria, Brazil Where: Positions Key work: Le Carnaval des Animaux (installation), above and left Why: Pocztaruk presents 18 aquariums, each consisting of two glass globes connected at the neck. In each aquarium, one globe contains a male betta fish, and the other a female. The tension created by separation creates a drawing in space brought about by the ensuing fish ballet. Pocztaruk proposes that when an animal and an object are dislocated from their original contexts and a “drawing” is created, the design introduces an artistic proposition.

Gallery: Arredondo\Arozarena, Mexico City Where: Positions Key work: Untitled (The disappearance of the symbol), below Why: Irízar uses the Phrygian cap, a significant image from Mexico’s history, to discuss the creation and disappearance of political symbols in the collective imagination. The unraveling, and ultimate absence, of the object sets the debate on democracy and the political engine in motion behind the images and symbols that circulate through the repetition of history.

By abstracting scenes and repeating them in different qualities and versions, Cytter proves images can have myriad meanings.

Andrew Brischler Gallery: Gavlak, Palm Beach, Los Angeles Where: Galleries Key work: Dreams (colored pencil, acrylic, graphite, and oil stick on panel), right Why: Brischler’s use of color, abstract forms, and symbolic words is indicative of his critical position on American pop culture and conservative politics, particularly as they relate to sexual orientation. Gallery: hunt kastner, Prague Where: Positions Key work: Solo installation of new painting and mixed media ´ abstract paintings and works on paper Why: Novotny’s concentrate on the emotion arising from a work’s formal structure and the process of execution. In his newest work, the artist has been experimenting with sheer-fabric canvas, focusing on the mystery of the barely visible.

Gallery: Simone Subal Gallery, New York Where: Positions Key work: Multimedia presentations in photography and sculpture of cement relief, steel, and ceramic Why: Olson’s work challenges conventional perception by shifting the focus between the center and the periphery. Her photographs, often centered on contorted images of her body, demonstrate a similar focal complication. The sculptures also allude to perceptional problems by presenting various perspectives that blur the continuum of vision.

Comfort foods with modern flair, a convivial vibe, and a well-chosen selection of craft beers and wines make The American Gastropub, or TAG (tagswfl.com), a welcome addition to Coconut Point mall’s dining scene. Executive Chef Jay Bucklin and his team spin pub fare by adding an unexpected dimension to the familiar while focusing on what’s fresh and seasonal. For the winter, dishes like a confit pork belly with butternut squash panzanella salad, toasted pumpkin seeds, and cranberry vinaigrette will be added. The menu features lighter items, too, since they are always in demand in Southwest Florida. One standout is an eye-pleasing grilled Caesar Cardini salad, elevated by bright notes of preserved lemon in the dressing and savory bits of pan-roasted garlic and thyme croutons. Handcrafted cocktails are also mixed with only fresh, seasonal ingredients. This month, the mixologists are concocting quaffs using cider and beer with warm flavors like cinnamon, apple, and cranberry. During this busy time of year, shoppers will be happy that TAG serves lunch and dinner every day, plus breakfast and brunch on Sunday. (tagswfl.com) —Kat Smith

Looking for a quick and muy delicioso break from the frenzy of the season? The recently opened Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria, located on U.S. 41 in the Park Shore Plaza, has you covered. The casual, family-friendly eatery serves authentic Mexican classics, like tamales, quesadillas, and addictive chips with salsa. The New Orleans import, which first opened during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, provides counter service in a cheerfully decorated dining room, although if you sit at the bar, a server will bring your order. Speaking of bars, Felipe’s focus on all fresh ingredients, freshly prepared, carries over to the restaurant’s handcrafted Latin American cocktails. Online ordering and the Felipe’s app are also available to help busy customers save time. (felipestaqueria.com) —K.S.

Crowd Pleasers Mix up these drinks to step out from behind the bar and into the revelry By Mark SPivak

Top: D’Amico & Partners Beverage Director Ross Kupitz mixes it up at The Continental.

102 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Part of the joy of the holiday season is entertaining groups of family or friends, but those get-togethers can also be challenging—particularly for the amateur bartender. Each of your guests is likely to have his or her own drink preference, and making cocktails individually for 15 or 20 people can easily take up the bulk of your evening. To get some expert advice, we consulted with Ross Kupitz, beverage director for the D’Amico & Partners family of restaurants (Campiello, Café Lurcat, Masa, and The Continental). Develop a seasonal strategy. “Because we have endless summer in Florida,” says Kupitz, “people don’t necessarily gravi-

tate toward brown spirits such as rye or bourbon. But most of us do shift toward winter spices such as clove, cinnamon, and ginger, as well as flavors such as cranberry, apple, and maple. The challenge is to manipulate those flavors and still have a refreshing drink.” Think punch. There’s a good reason why punch has been popular since the seventeenth century, when it was brought back to England from India by employees of the British East India Company. The libation is easy to prepare, allows guests to help themselves, and virtually guarantees a stress-free evening for the host. Making punch, traditionally a blend of alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and spices, is far from rocket science. When in doubt, fall back on the old rule: “One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, and four of weak.” “A Champagne punch is perfect for the holidays,” says Kupitz. “It’s festive, easy to make, and it appeals to people who might not drink Champagne by itself.” One of his favorites is

Pour a sparkling punch that can double as a Champagne cocktail. Begin by making a syrup: Add one cup of water, a half-cup of sugar, one cup of fresh or frozen cranberries, three to five cinnamon sticks, and three to five cloves to a saucepan. Bring the ingredients to a boil, simmer for 10 minutes, and add two cups of blood orange puree. The cooled syrup can be used to make individual cocktails, or poured into a punch bowl with Champagne or a bottle of sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or Cava. Eggnog Adaptation. Eggnog is one of the few elements of the Christmas ritual designed for adults, and has been with us since the Colonial era. Kupitz’s favorite variation on eggnog is the Tom and Jerry cocktail. “My uncle used to make this every year at Christmas,” he says, “so the drink brings back childhood memories for me. It’s very versatile; you can make it one at a time, or do up a batch and hold it in a Crock-Pot or double boiler under low heat.” For a medium-size crowd, begin by separating six eggs. Beat the whites until slightly frothy;

add a half-cup of regular sugar, one cup of powdered sugar, and one teaspoon of cream of tartar, and beat until stiff. Add the same amount of sugar to the yolks along with a 7-ounce jar of marshmallow cream, and also beat until stiff. Fold the whites and yolks together. Keep warm in a double boiler or Crock Pot. Ladle the mixture into coffee cups and add 1.5 to 2 ounces of your spirit of choice and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg. “I like to use a reasonably good cognac or bourbon like Courvoisier VS or Maker’s Mark,” he says, “but a less expensive brandy will work. If you like a bit more spice and kick in your holiday drinks, I’d suggest using a high-proof rye whiskey, like the 100-proof Rittenhouse.” The Tom and Jerry works very well for groups because you can customize the drink by adding the amount of liquor each guest wants. «

Leave complex cocktails to the pros, like Chad Bromley and Barry Larkin at The Continental (below), and opt for a sparkling punch or eggnog.

Investing Overseas

Looking to buy a second home in a foreign land? Arm yourself with more than just a colorful brochure. By Judy Martel

W

hether they long for the hills of Tuscany or the beaches of Panama, many Americans who dream of buying a second home abroad wonder if the combination of a strong U.S. dollar, a volatile stock market, and weak foreign economies are sounding the wake-up call to buy. Kathleen Peddicord, author of How to Retire Overseas: Everything You Need to Know to Live Well (for Less) Abroad (Plume), believes investors are looking at a window of opportunity. “I’d say it’s the best time in our lifetimes to be buying property in many very appealing places,” says Peddicord, who founded the website Live and Invest Overseas (liveand investoverseas.com) and has called three foreign countries home during her 17 years abroad. But investing in foreign real estate is not without its hassles and costs. Be sure to understand not only the vagaries of another culture, but also the political and economic situation, and all fees and taxes associated with buying and living abroad. Otherwise, homeowners could end up with serious cross-cultural buyer’s remorse.

116 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The Allure of Investing Abroad Peddicord believes buying property abroad offers investors a tangible asset they can use and enjoy, as well as portfolio diversification—a valuable advantage in today’s wobbly economic market. “There are lots of problems and uncertainties in the world,” she says. “How can you protect yourself against any of it? The only way is to be diversified so that you’re not at the mercy of any one country, any one economy, any one currency, or any one political administration.” The return on investment for foreign property has been positive this past year, Peddicord adds, especially for rental properties, which are plentiful in many areas. Buy right, she says, and homeowners can expect a net return in the range of 5 to 8 percent before taxes—and even more in areas where real estate is appreciating.

A House for the Ages While foreign currency rates can work for or against property owners at any time, Peddicord says, they won’t hurt in the long run if buyers avoid regions with chronically unstable or volatile economies, such as Argentina.

In relatively stable regions, she suggests buyers target high-end areas and homes with character. “Something historic and charming will hold its value when cookie-cutter inventory doesn’t,” she says. For a long-term return on investment, buyers should also stick to markets that don’t cater specifically to foreigners seeking investment rental property, she adds. Spain’s coast, for example, has seen a real estate boom and bust dependent on tourism. “Buying into a location that is 100 percent supported by foreign demand means you could have a hard time selling if that foreign demand disappears,” she says.

The Cost of Paradise U.S. buyers venturing into the overseas real estate market discover not only the language and the culture are foreign; fees and expenses are different, too. One of the biggest surprises for U.S. buyers is the transfer tax, which ranges from 1 to 10 percent of the purchase price, Peddicord says. Most

countries charge the tax, and typically the buyer pays it. “On the plus side,” Peddicord adds, “property taxes in most countries are less than you might expect and usually less than you’re used to, wherever you’re living in the States. Some countries have no property tax; [for example,] Croatia.” In some regions, such as Latin America, nonresident foreigners generally cannot obtain a mortgage. While it is possible in Europe, Peddicord says, terms of the mortgage will not be the same as with a U.S. loan. For instance, 30-year mortgages don’t exist outside the United States. In addition, bureaucratic red tape could add costs or delays to plans for buying or renovating, so buyers should use their own attorney to help with the purchase process, Peddicord advises, rather than one hired by the seller or developer.

Follow Your Passion While using the brain to invest in an overseas home is a smart financial move, buyers shouldn’t ignore their hearts, especially if they plan to live there, Peddicord says. “I recommend people not make a move to run away or to escape from something, but to embrace new opportunities,” she says. “The idea of launching a new life in a new country … of starting over someplace sunny and exotic with white-sand beaches or Old World culture—that’s sexy.” «

Frozen Fun

What better way to celebrate winter than with a festive figure skating show? The Florida Everblades Figure Skating Club hits the ice for its annual holiday show December 12 at Germain Arena. The show theme is “Holiday Movies on Ice,” with numbers featuring medleys from favorite holiday movies, such as A White Christmas and Elf. The show will highlight more than 35 young athletes. “Many people don’t realize that we have kids in this community who are so dedicated to this sport—they’re in the rink almost every day of the week, and we don’t get to see them perform very often,” says FEFSC board member Lynda Rowley, whose daughter has been skating in the holiday show for the past eight years. It’s a fun outing for the whole family. (fefsc.org) —A.B.

Sense of Place Philip Douglas

Favorite Quote: “It’s the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter!”

— Marlene Dietrich

VANESSA ROGERS

, the celebrity stylist-owner of eponymous Philip Douglas Beauty, is widely known for hair and makeup expertise. He recently won a U.S. competition to be the first American in 30 years to participate in the prestigious La Bioesthetique International Stylist of the Year Awards. Douglas also directs his passion toward supporting the Naples community. He spent more than a dozen years volunteering with the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Good program, for which he received the Hope Award. Earlier this year, Douglas and husband Doug Olsen received the Jim Dellas and Cheryl Deering Animaltarian Award for volunteer service with the Humane Society Naples. 1. Best local cultural attraction: Naples Philharmonic at Artis—Naples; however, it will always be “The Phil” to me. No matter what we are seeing, it is always a great experience. 2. Best locally made product: Norman Love chocolates. I am a chocoholic. 3. Favorite scent: Kilian Prelude to Love, Invitation

1 Words to live by: Always be true to oneself.

2

7

4. Treasured books: Two for the Dough by Janet Evanovich, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, and Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynn Truss, a [funny] book about punctuation. I learned a lot about those little marks on paper. 5. Esteemed charity: The Humane Society Naples, a no-kill shelter, where Doug Olsen and I have chaired the annual tea for the last five years. We have four pups currently, and a total of seven adopted dogs from the HSN. 6. Favorite designers: For men’s clothing, it’s Robert 5 Godley, who designs Psycho Bunny; for women, Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. 7. Favorite skin-care product: Borghese’s Fango Active Mud for Face and Body

Biggest obstacle he has overcome: I have always been very shy. I have read books, bought videos, and practiced in front of a mirror, studied other people, and then just go out there and do it!
