In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.
This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other world-renowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

Forbes Best in State Wealth Advisor: Ranking algorithm based on industry experience, interviews, compliance records, assets under management, revenue and other criteria by SHOOK Research, LLC, which does not receive compensation from the advisors or their firms in exchange for placement on a ranking. Investment performance is not a criterion. Barron’s Top 100 Financial Advisors rankings are based on data provided by thousands of advisors. Factors included in the rankings were assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, length of service, quality of practice and client retention. To be named a Barron’s Hall of Fame Advisor the advisor has to have been named by Barron’s for the last ten years consecutively in any of their rankings. In Tom Moran’s case from 2010-2019 he was named to Barron’s Top 100 Financial Advisors ranking. FROM THE PUBLISHER
The holidays are here at last! I used to find this time of year very stressful, trying to get everything done and hoping Santa didn’t disappoint with his gift selections. He was, after all, delivering to two young ladies who did not always agree with “his” taste. I’m not sure if it’s the changes in the world over the last year and a half that have transformed my attitude, but I am totally chill now. The reset button gave me the opportunity to remind myself what the holidays represent. Now, with my family scattered all over the nation, I look forward to precious time with loved ones, cherishing every minute I can steal with them. An additional spark has been added to our holidays this year as we are blessed to be gaining a new family member in 2022. Our daughter Alleigh is marrying her longtime love, Brian Phillips, a delightful, patient, loving young man we are proud to call a son. A parent’s hope that your children will find a partner who loves them as much as you do, treats them with respect, and makes them happy is not an easy one to fulfill, but Brian checks all the boxes. This issue of Naples Illustrated contains two beautiful couples who opened their homes to our team and allowed us an up-close look at how they celebrate the holidays. Rochelle and Chris Shucart both run their own businesses and yet make great efforts to ensure their son, Carsten, is exposed to some of the magical traditions Rochelle grew up with. Also committed to keeping the magic alive are Leslie and Mike Gentzle, who put a wonderful spin on Christmas with their Floridian-style decor. An admitted perfectionist, Leslie appreciates the importance of including their children in the festivities and allows them to decorate their own clubhouse. Beverly Fanning has a nickname of “Miss Bev,” and after I read about her and all she has done for people in need, I think I will call her Santa Claus. She has touched so many lives with her contributions. She digs deep to seek those most in need and changes their course forever. I had the opportunity to meet Beverly Fanning recently (at a fundraiser, of course), and she is truly an inspiration. I plan to take a page out of her book and pay it forward in the new year. Happy Holidays!

INSIDER NAPLES CULTURAL SCENE
Grammy and Emmy Award winner John McDaniel Left: McDaniel on stage with Broadway performer Jason Danieley in Naples
MATTHEW SCHIPPER
John McDaniel fondly recalls some of his first professional gigs at the Naples Di ner Theater in the early 1980s. It no longer exists but the pianist, composer, producer, and conductor went on to lead The Rosie O’Donnell Show band for six years and earn a Grammy and two Emmy Awards, among other impressive achievements. By happenstance, McDaniel, 60, is returning to Naples these days to collaborate with Gulfshore Playhouse Founder/Producing Artistic Director/CEO Kristen Coury. Together, they developed an original Broadway Cabaret Series, special to Naples, which McDaniel returns to emcee. “I’ve always had a soft spot for Naples,” McDaniel says. “Wow, has it changed. It was much more rustic as I recall.” Today, he says, “Naples audiences are smart and savvy. They get all the jokes, which is fabulous.” McDaniel teamed up with another Broadway powerhouse— actor, singer, and concert performer Jason Danieley—for a performance for Gulfshore Playhouse’s Next Stage Capital Campaign Celebration in April. The outdoor concert was held on the future campus of the 40,000-square-foot Baker Theatre and Education Center at the corner of First Avenue South and Goodlette-Frank Road. The celebration honored supporters who helped Gulfshore Playhouse inch closer to its $60 million goal. That evening, Jay and Patty Baker announced their second $10 million matching challenge grant for the project. “I almost fell off the piano bench,” McDaniel recalls. “It was so great to be there and feel the love from the audience. They were rapt.

You could almost feel people whipping out their checkbooks.” In short order, Gulfshore Playhouse reached a $54.3 million milestone. An invitation-only groundbreaking party has been planned for December 1. McDaniel and Coury met through a mutual friend, a casting director in New York City. “We met on Zoom,” he says, “and we really hit it off. It’s extraordinary what she’s done there.” As an award-winning Broadway producer,
McDaniel is impressed with the strong arts patronage in Collier County and by how the art scene has evolved in sophistication. The Naples cultural scene “seems to be really on the rise, alive and growing,” he says. “It’s great that folks recognize how important the arts are to our lives—especially the live arts. They’re vital to the human experience, but we need that support. The arts can never be funded purely on sales. We need donors to exist.” —Cathy Chestnut NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2021

INSIDER THE GOODS
Treasure Hunt
David Webb, Cartier, Bulgari, Breitling: Visitors to La Maison Yamron step back in time and into bespoke beauty at the year-old estate jewelry boutique at Waterside Shops. Yamron opened the 1,100-square-foot La Maison last December to showcase luxurious estate jewelry. The brand is renowned for its ability to preserve and celebrate vintage design, high-value gems, one-of-a-kind pieces, and family heritage, and for creatively repurposing specific items (remember dress clips?) for the modern age. “I’m in the perfect environment because we get to see some world-class pieces here,” says gemologist Melissa Stein, who’s been drawn to estate jewels for more than two decades. One of the most striking, she notes, is long gone: a suite of custom-designed pieces by David Webb (a designer to First Lady Jackie Kennedy in 1962). But there’s always something special on display, such as a Tiffany 5-plus, cushion-cut emerald and diamond ring. The three-stone ring’s style is referred to as “past, present, and future,” with the two diamonds set in platinum and the emerald set in 18-karat gold. “Green is a warmer tone, so it’s set in a warm-tone metal,” Stein explains. “It’s the best emerald any of us has seen.”
Clockwise from left: Cartier Art Deco clip; Art Deco dress/fur clip with a 5-carat Old European–cut diamond; a pair of rose and yellow gold daytime dress clips with cabochon sapphire finials.
Two 1920s, bejeweled Art Deco pieces are also eye-catching: an 18-karat white gold, diamond, and onyx jabot pin and a diamond, carved emerald, and ruby-beaded dress clip by Cartier. Women originally used dress clips to secure the foundations under their dresses or to fasten their fur coats. But they’re making a resurgence once again and are being worn in fun ways by both women and men, says Stein. Each day is a bit like Christmas for Stein, as people come in to switch out their jewelry wardrobe or transform a treasured family heirloom into an updated piece or several pieces for children and grandchildren. “It’s a lot of fun,” she says. “It’s a little bit of a treasure hunt. You never know what’s going to come in.” (yamron.com) —Cathy Chestnut
WHEEL FUN
VINTAGE PROPS Patti Genko, the force behind Bubbles Mobile Bar, remembers serving at her first event in Naples—a New Year’s Eve party at a local golf club in 2019. “We served Prosecco on tap at that first event and the events manager called us ‘the best prop ever,’” she recalls. Though they do not dispense spirits, she was inspired to add more prop options to her stable: first vintage 1960s Italian Vespa scooters and, most recently, whimsical bicycles. One is a 1970 black-and-silver Western Flyer bicycle built for two. The other two are new beach bikes that Genko wrapped herself; she also added wicker baskets, pink seats, silk flowers, and ribbon streamers. They are called “Pink Roses” and “Garden Party” because “they are inspired by tropical gardens and the Florida lifestyle,” she says. The bikes “can be rented separately for props, or photo, engagement, and wedding shoots, bridal showers, or business promotions,” she says. “They draw attention and make people smile.” (bubbles mobilebar.com) —C.C. 44 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

CURATING Contemplation
ship that contributed to the heroic stature of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter. But it’s only a tiny snippet of the Bakers’ collecting interests. So, we are hoping that, by showing “Love in All Forms”—fin art from the Bakers’ private collection—at Henry, Graham, the same time, folks and Theodore will come away with a McNeil at Artis—Naples richer understanding of who the Bakers are as collectors. They are a household name around town and are so incredibly philanthropic in so many ways. But they are also interesting and fun people, and these exhibitions reveal that. Exhibits can take years to put in place. Normally, a new museum director must wait about three years to get their projects on the calendar. Due to The Baker Museum being closed for two years after Hurricane Irma repairs and expansion renovations, it really opened space on the calendar, and I was able to choose a lot of the exhibits, which was exhilarating and challenging. I am especially thrilled to be showcasing two female solo artists: street photographs
taken by Helen Levitt in the 1940s in New York City, showing children playing on the street with no shoes and torn clothing and grandmothers sitting on their front stoops—ordinary people presented in an extraordinary way. And later in the season, Pam Longobardi’s “Ocean Gleaning.” In Naples, we all care about the environment. Longobardi has intricate works assembled with 500 individual pieces stuck to the wall with pins and large, 3D sculptural installations. Her pieces are incredibly beautiful, and then you get up closer to them and see what her medium is—found ocean plastic—and it arrests you even more. What is your family’s favorite place in the area so far? Certainly, the place we have spent the most time in is Fleischmann Park because my kids play baseball. The excitement I feel for the “Baseball Heroes” exhibit comes from my whole family being baseball fans. I actually enrolled our boys in Little League here before I even enrolled them in school because I didn’t want to miss that cutoff!

NI: Your love of museums began as a child in Boston, visiting the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. How did this parlay into a career? McNeil: My first love, before museums, was books. I was that kid who would be reading under the covers with a flashlight until all hours. I was an English major [at Georgetown University, where she minored in art history]. My first museum position was an internship in the publications department at The National Gallery in London when I was in grad school [earning a master’s degree in art history from The Courtauld Institute of Art]. So that opportunity married my two interests. Curating is a form of storytelling. True. There is an infinite number of stories that can be told through any number of objects, and it is up to a curator to decide which direction to take. For me, it’s important that the art’s narrative gives people the opportunity to pause, reflect on their lives and the lives of others, and see the world through a different lens. What is The Baker Museum’s biggest exhibition of the season? That would be “Baseball Heroes,” the private collection of Jay Baker, which started years ago when his wife, Patty, gave him baseball memorabilia as a Christmas gift. We are looking at the idea of teamwork and sportsman-
RUSS BRYANT
Courtney McNeil, the newest museum director and chief curator of The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples, believes that “art’s narrative gives people the opportunity to pause” and “see the world through a different lens.” McNeil took on the high-profile job in January and relocated from Savannah, Georgia, with her husband, Ryan, and three young sons, Graham, 9, Henry, 7, and Theodore, 5. She is the first female in this position at The Baker Museum and had an open exhibition slate to fill upon her arrival. McNeil was formerly chief curator and deputy director for curatorial affairs at Telfair Museums. Find out about her inspirations and what’s in store at The Baker Museum this season. Lakeside HAVEN A custom home in Talis Park’s Isola Bella is a private resort wrapped in nature By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Diana Todorova Photography

After a lifetime of frequent countrywide moves for career relocations, Jeff and Cindy Babka were ready to put down roots. After retiring from their careers as a chief financial officer and an elementary schoolteacher, the couple looked at beach homes and houses in Old Naples, but nothing matched their expectations. The pair was residing in a Talis Park penthouse in North Naples when they began yearning for the privacy a single-family residence affords. While exploring the lay of the land, they discovered the community’s newest neighborhood, Isola Bella (“beautiful island”), where they found a commanding 4,414-square-foot estate. “This home checked NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2021

every box a¾ nd then some,” Cindy says. “There is a little island in the water in front of the house with a large tree. A pelican we named Irvin comes every night at sunset to sleep and leaves at dawn. It’s magical.” To reach the private 4.5-acre isle with only 17 homesites, visitors and residents drive or walk across a Tuscan-inspired bridge fabricated with imported Italian stone. The romantic, Italian-styled entry streetscape foreshadows the barefoot luxury that lies ahead.
Shades of black, cream, linen, and gray and natural elements such as wood, stone, and water have starring roles throughout the living room. 58
LIKE A DREAM The custom, four-bedroom home was built by Seagate Development Group and designed by Cynde Thompson, senior interior designer for Theory Design, Seagate’s in-house design company. After buying the home, the Babkas leased it back to Seagate as a model home for a year before finally moving in. “It was worth the wait,” Cindy says. “We sold our condo fully furnished and wanted to just have to bring clothes, bedding, and dishes. It was like a dream for us.” A soothing waterfall wall leading from the driveway to the front door of the two-story, West Indies–inspired residence sets a relaxing tone upon arrival. “The water feature gives the home a welcoming, inviting

feel and provides privacy from neighbors,” says Thompson, the interior designer. Made from hurricane-rated metal and 10 panels of glass, the cleanly framed front doors bring in plenty of natural light. Inside the spacious foyer, a Steinway baby grand piano makes an impressive focal point. It came with the house and, though they are not musicians, the Babkas are inspired by the baby grand. “We both love to entertain,” she explains, adding they will invite friends to play at gatherings and are planning to take lessons themselves. Directly across from the foyer is the spectacular 180-bottle wine room where the couple will store their collection, which includes her Veuve Clicquot Champagne and his Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines from Southeastern France. “It truly is a spectacular piece of artwork, and at night, it lights up,” Thompson says of the wine vault. Casual enough to kick back and set your feet on the coffee table without losing its sense of elegance, the living room is cloaked in various shades of black, cream, linen, and gray. Natural elements including wood, stone, and water interweave with the eye-catching white oak plank-wood flooring. “Sometimes to define a space—or to keep the flooring from being boring—we lay the wood on a 45-degree angle, like we did in the living room,” notes Thompson. The large open kitchen is ideal for Jeff, who likes to cook and interact with family and friends while preparing his gastronomical specialties. A modern take on a traditional country kitchen, the generous space boasts floating shelves, neutral gray quartzite countertops, and high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. Sophisticated, leather-wrapped chairs complement the maple tabletop dining table—with a glass chandelier with movable black metal arms overhead—in the casual dining space. “We kept the chandelier simple but interesting,” Thompson says. “Chandeliers are kind of like earrings for a dress and really make a difference.”

From left: A soothing waterfall leads from the driveway to the front door; the estate’s outdoor living area and amenities rival a posh resort.
Part computer room, part guest room with a sofa sleeper for grandkids, the multifunctional office boasts the ultimate luxury of access to a second-floor terrace. “We want every room to be used,” says Thompson. Fun and sexy, the powder room features a trough sink with black and white art that pops off the striking black grass cloth walls. “Powder rooms are what guests see and families use all of the time,” Thompson says. “They are really important spaces.” The outdoor living area follows the rest of the estate, with amenities equal to a posh resort. Frameless glass railings surrounding much of the outdoor area—the latest in architectural technology—add safety
without eclipsing the view. Not surprisingly, planning for the home was based on the site’s natural amenities and views, according to Seagate Chief Operating Officer James Nulf. “The goal was to envision what the outdoor living lifestyle would be like for the homeowner and create a space that would be as close to the lake as possible,” he says. The Babkas live in their Naples residence more than half of the year, leaving in June to summer at their home in Newport, Rhode Island. Simply thrilled with their latest accommodations, Cindy jokes, “All of our friends love it. I know it’s going to be tough to get our guests to leave our home.” «

CLOSET COUTURE Dreams become reality with luxe CUSTOM-CREATED spaces By Liza Grant Smith Once upon a time, our closets were uninspired, utilitarian spaces we used to store our clothes. Today, they have the potential to become the stuff of Carrie Bradshaw legends. With the right accents and accoutrements, your humdrum closet can transform into a luxe destination for dressing and fashion obsessing that is guaranteed to deliver a jaw-dropping moment on the home tour you give party guests. The key to raising the cachet of your closet? Capitalize on these tips from H.L. Burkley, owner of Inspired Closets Southwest Florida in Naples. (inspiredclosetsswfl.com)

Add stylish accents. Closets revel in neutrals, but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Burkley suggests letting the details dial up the swankiness of your closet. “The addition of glass cabinetry, unique stone countertops, chandeliers, upgraded handles, and accent colors are all ways our clients glam up their closet decor and take that wow factor to the next level,” Burkley says. The mere choice of the hardware material (brass versus brushed nickel versus matte black) can change the entire vibe of a closet. And using glass doors offers the additional benefits of preventing the space from feeling too closed in and adding a level of accountability to keep your clothes organized.
62
2
Incorporate pieces to make it a livable space. If you want your closet to function as a room, be sure to add elements of a room. Burkley suggests an island, seating bench, or built-in vanity with custom lighting. And while these fashionable pieces will surely add to the visual pop, don’t overlook their functionality. Is the bench actually comfortable and is the island the right size and height for its intended use—whether that be laying out your fashion wares, displaying personal items, or serving as the resting spot for a cocktails and canapé spread? Don’t be afraid to add artwork to available wall space. This is no longer a place you’re just passing in and out of. You want it to invite you to stay a while and enjoy.

Lighting is paramount. Lighting is what pulls all the components of your closet symphony together, so be sure to consider the placement and types of lighting that meet your vision. Illuminating the individual shelves and compartments helps showcase your wardrobe and creates an upscale look akin to what you might see when shopping in a designer fashion house. Burkley echoes this sentiment. “Beautiful overhead cabinets with glass fronts and integrated lighting allow our clients to display their prized handbags or collectables, while the integrated lighting in our popular ‘Shoe Shrine’ takes shoe storage to a whole new level. And all of our integrated lighting uses turnable LEDs, so you can adjust your lighting to the mood or task at hand, from soft, warm settings to white-hot, all using the same dimmer.”
4
Color inside the lines. Don’t be afraid to play with color. “Grays and natural wood grains are trend-
ing right now, even blending the two for extra impact,” advises Burkley. “Some of our new interior finishes, like charcoal, navy, and new natural, help our customers blend established colors in their home with ‘now’ colors.” Or you can use the composition of your wardrobe to deliver results. “A well-accessorized closet that is organized by color, size, and/or type makes an impact when you walk in,” he says.
5
You do you. Having a Pin-worthy closet is great, but if it doesn’t reflect who you are and how you would best utilize it, then your customization project will fall short. This applies, in part, to creating a space with the type and variety of shelving and compartments to best house your unique wardrobe. Work with a closet design professional to formulate the perfect division of space to showcase your particular
fashion addictions—whether they be handbags, shoes, or watches. The second component is the utilization of the space. Visualize how you would actually spend time in it. For some, it might be catching up on emails at a small desk, applying makeup at a table vanity, or lounging on a couch reading a book. Make sure your closet’s life mirrors the one you have.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!
Dinner For DOZENS Tips for organizing a meaningful, stress-free GROUP GATHERING By Steven Stolman | Photography by Rob Rich Clockwise from above: A transformed barn is an ideal venue; Prosecco pours welcome guests; takeaway market corn puddings served in the host’s own white ceramic lasagna pans.

What do you do when the guest list grows beyond the confines of your home? The answer is to think outside the box—or, as was the case for this simple but heartfelt dinner for 50, inside the barn. Indeed, sometimes the most unlikely settings can inspire the most delightful gatherings, without breaking the bank. While many shudder at the idea of hosting hoards for dinner, there are times when it’s required; think rehearsal dinners or milestone birthdays and anniversaries. But there are also folks blessed with so many friends who all know each other that entertaining everyone in one fell swoop is a total joy. In the iconic film The Wizard of Oz, the Tin Man is told: “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” For those who are loved by lots, a big gathering can be a wonderful way to return all that affection. For this late-summer dinner, the venue was a soaring barn on the grounds of the Southampton History Museum, on the east end of Long Island. Little had to be done in the way of decor beyond going with the flow: rented country-casual blue gingham tablecloths and matching

napkins, plus candlelit lanterns brought from home. The florals were inexpensive pots of seasonal flower purchased that morning from a local supermarket. Any big-box building supply store with a garden center would offer the same selection. The key is to think local. If you’re doing this in Southwest Florida, chrysanthemums would look silly, but bougainvillea, hibiscus, or orchids would be lovely, and they can go home with you afterwards. Don’t have access to a barn? Maybe it’s a tiki hut, slat house, or party tent (the most trusted inclementweather insurance policy). The menu for this dinner could not have been easier or better received. It began with pigs in blankets with mustard (a surefire crowd-pleaser), followed by a buffet of crispy fried chicken, St. Louis–style barbecue ribs, hearty corn pudding, and grilled seasonal vegetables. In lieu of a caterer, I ordered takeaway from a market in advance. The chicken and ribs came in foil containers for easy reheating and transferral into my serving pieces. A few days before the dinner, I brought my own white ceramic lasagna pans to the market for the corn puddings. The desserts came from a much-loved local bakery famous for its lemon squares, raspberry crumble bars, and blondies, all cut into bitesize pieces and served on tiered étagères procured from the same party rental company that provided the tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, flatware, and glassware. If rentals are budget busters, there are plenty of stylish disposables on the market—chic plastic stemless wine glasses and bamboo plates and flatware are all available online. However, I draw the line at paper dinner napkins. Buy a bunch of inexpensive cloth ones instead. You’ll use them again. The key to pulling this whole shebang off can be summed up in one word: staffing. I was fortunate enough to have been made aware of a crackerjack team of local guys and gals who handled the setup, tended 68
the bar, warmed and plated the food in an adjacent kitchen, circulated throughout the evening pouring wine and clearing glasses and plates, and, best of all, cleaned the whole thing up, returning the venue in better shape than before. If there’s one aspect of entertaining where one should never skimp, it’s staffing. The last thing a host wants is to be left with an unwieldy mess after the last guest has departed, or worse, having to fill in as an extra bartender or busboy. It’s a lot more meaningful to mingle with your guests in a relaxed, gracious manner. Since most of us haven’t gathered in groups for what feels like an eternity, now that things are (hopefully) looking up, don’t be shy. Hosting a big shindig doesn’t have to be expensive or backbreaking. Just keep it simple, serve generous amounts of food and drink that you love, have lots of help, and enjoy the experience. «

Rwanda’s Rebirth
Majestic mountain gorillas, new ultra-luxe safari lodges, and a triumphant return of the Big Five—Rwanda is trending as Africa’s latest safari hot spot By Paul Rubio

y heart pounds and my legs shake as I scramble up a muddy, 65-degree slope in the thick of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It’s been an arduous three-hour ascent through mist-shrouded forest, blanketed in stinging nettles and prickly thistle plants, but the reward is near. I am just minutes away from consummating a wildlife lover’s ultimate dream: face time with the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The excitement is palpable. I’m glued to my guide, Jolie, as something scurries through near-impenetrable thickets above. Our tracker machetes a narrow path forward and six members of the Agashya family come into view. Jolie vocalizes a series of guttural groans, informing the gorilla troop that we come in peace. Within seconds, the dominant silverback—one of three silverbacks in this family of

I’ve never felt more alive. Soon enough, the silverback returns to the other gorillas, and we officially commence our single precious hour observing the family, a time limit set by the Rwandan government to minimize human-gorilla interactions. In that hour, I forge a lifetime of memories, enamored by young blackbacks wrestling and tumbling down the slopes, elders foraging for food, and an inquisitive newborn sneaking a glimpse of the commotion from his mother’s clutch. I watch my greatest Planet Earth fantasies unfold in real time—and this live show doesn’t disappoint. The following day brings a search for the Amahoro family, another of Rwanda’s 20 known gorilla troops, through the jungled thicket of northern Rwanda’s volcanoes. The physical journey to reach them is less difficult than the previous one, but the emotional journey is equally poignant. As recently as a few years ago, such epic gorilla experiences were the extent of Rwanda’s safari footprint. But so much has changed in so little time. In the last decade, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” has risen above a rocky past to become the African continent’s biggest success story in terms of safety, economic growth, and as an exemplar of wildlife tourism and conservation. Case in point: I’m on a two-week custom Rwanda safari with outfitter Micato Safaris (micato.com), often named the world’s top safari company. My national itinerary includes not only gorilla trekking but also chimpanzee trekking, a Big Five safari, and luxuriating in some of the newest—and best—lodges on the entire African safari circuit. Prior to arriving in Volcanoes National Park, I had basked in the glory of Rwanda’s secret, enchanted forest: Nyungwe. Following my mandatory one-day quarantine in the capital city of Kigali, Micato arranged a helicopter transfer to western Rwanda and a stay at the One&Only Nyungwe House (oneandonly resorts.com), a stunning 22-room

of the national park, strewn with 21 freestanding lodges and suites. Each unit is a masterpiece in transitional indoor-outdoor design, framed in elaborate woodwork and adorned in modernist furnishings and patterned soft goods that define African chic. Winding pathways lead to a boutique spa, multiple restaurants, and experiential venues, including the past residence of famed wildlife expert Jack Hanna and a boma used for dance performances. On the opposite end of the national park, the eightsuite Singita Kwitonda Lodge also wows as a series of minimalist, jewel box–like sanctuaries, hewn from volcanic rock, river stone, handmade ceramic tiles, and oven-red clay bricks made by surrounding communities. Suites and common areas maximize volcano views through wide glass expanses and exude romance in the mist thanks to private heated plunge pools, outdoor fir places, and cozy nooks (don’t miss sampling a few glasses of South African reds in the wine cellar). Singita’s vegetable garden yields pristine ingredients that the lodge’s chefs theatrically prepare in an interactive kitchen. While

Here, the search for smaller primates headlines the daily agenda thanks to an impressive 13 species, including Earth’s largest troop of Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys (more than 500 strong), thriving populations of L’Hoest’s monkeys, and two families of chimpanzees. There’s also exceptional birdwatching, with more than 300 species represented, including 28 endemics like the red-collared mountain-babbler and the breathtaking Rwenzori turaco. More than action-packed wildlife spotting, One&Only Nyungwe House promises an exotic African escape steeped in wellness, culture, and style. The infinity pool, spa, and dining areas are positioned such that the sights and sounds of towering forests and undulating tea hedges continuously feed the soul. Stilted, tree-top guest rooms and suites house outdoor salas, idyllic for pairing jungle immersion with morning coffee and evening wine. Interiors reflect Rwandan charm, underscored by grand displays of agaseke (traditional Rwandese basket work) and imigongo (a geometric art form exclusive to Rwanda). From Nyungwe, I venture north to Volcanoes National Park alongside my personal Micato driver and safari director—such personnel plus a private 4x4 are standard on a Custom Micato Safari—and begin an extended stay in prime gorilla real estate, splitting my time between One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (oneandonlyresorts.com) and Singita Kwitonda Lodge (singita.com). Gorilla’s Nest is arguably One&Only’s most luxurious (and priciest) property to date, a 35-acre garden oasis near the foothills

gorilla trekking initially anchored my stays at both properties, each merits classification as a restorative nature retreat, not just a posh base for bucket-list wildlife outings. Riding high from epic primate trekking and unparalleled pampering, I round out my Micato Rwanda journey by heading east to Akagera National Park, near the border with Tanzania. Much of the 433-square-mile park was destroyed during and after the civil war in the 1990s, but by 2010 the Rwanda Development Board and the African Parks Network were rehabilitating the land and restoring Central Africa’s largest protected wetland to its former splendor. With the 2017 reintroduction of the black rhino, Akagera officially regained Big Five status. Nowadays, it’s entirely possible to enjoy a quintessential East Africa safari and witness the fruits of conservation in action at Magashi, a haute tented camp by Wilderness Safaris (wilderness-safaris. com). Given the mix of savannah, montane, and wetland habits, expect excursions by both 4X4 and boat, in search of water-loving species

such as hippos, crocs, and fish eagles along with savannah superstars like elephants, lions, and leopards, which have adapted to a diet of catfish from Lake Rwanyakazinga as a main source of protein. Notwithstanding the country’s new identity, mountain gorillas—and our intrinsic desire to observe them—will continue to anchor safaris in
Rwanda. This up-close wildlife encounter truly merits labels like “life changing” and “once in a lifetime.” However, new itineraries by the likes of Micato Safaris, primate walking safaris in the west, and classic savannah experiences in the east—complemented by a boom in ultra-luxury lodging—collectively showcase Rwanda’s rebirth into today’s ultimate safari destination. «

AIR FORCE Capable of gliding up to 520 miles on a single charge, the 2022 Lucid Air is a true game changer By Howard Walker I’ve gazed at the future of four-wheeled luxury, and it’s got a plug attached. Right around now, Lucid Motors out in Casa Grande, Arizona, is ramping up production of its groundbreaking all-electric Lucid Air fourdoor luxury sedan. You might have seen the headlines. The flagship Air Dream Performance Edition will deliver a staggering 1,100 horsepower. That’s enough to catapult it from standstill to 60 mph in an eyewatering, heart-palpitating 2.5 seconds. That’s not just supercar fast, it’s hypercar fast. Yet, take the long and winding road to grandma’s house and the battery will give a real-world, EPA-approved, best-in-the-industry range of 520 miles. That’s LA to San Fran on a sin76
gle charge. Range anxiety? What range anxiety? While this highfalutin halo model stickers at $170,500—the initial run of 520 sold out faster than tickets to an Ariana Grande concert—there are plenty more affordable, less acceleratively unnerving versions to choose from. Take, for example, last year’s starter Lucid, the Air Pure, which boasts 480 horses, a still-impressive 406mile range, and a price tag of $78,900. That’s a nontrivial $12 grand less than the equivalent Tesla Model S, or more than $23,000 less than the brand-new electric Mercedes EQS, which has a range of 350 miles—almost 60 less than the Lucid. This is all in addition to Lucid’s staggering ability to fast charge. Plug it in and you can add up to 300 miles of battery in 20 minutes. In a se-
rious rush to pick up the kids? Just 60 seconds of 350-volt, fast-charger juice can deliver 20 miles of range. What this carmaker has produced with its Lucid Air is the luxury sedan of the future. See it in the metal or, in my case, on the floor at the Lucid Studio showroom in West Palm Beach, and you can’t help but be impressed. Size-wise, the Air is almost a perfect match

But gaze at it in profile and savor that low, arching roofline, the pinched waist, and those muscular haunches over the wheels. The contrasting roof frame color makes all the difference. It comes with some impressive design features too. The stunning glass roof is more like a canopy on a fighter jet, with the windshield flowing seamlessly to a roll-over beam behind

While there’s no built-in sunshade or Mercedesstyle electrochromic darkening, I’m told the glass has a special coating to reduce heat and soften sunlight—pretty essential here in the Sunshine State. The choice of interior materials is first-class, with lots of open-pore wood, glove-soft napa leather, satin metal, and even a linen-like fab-
ric made out of recycled plastic bottles. No, it doesn’t have the mile-wide glass screens you get in Mercedes’ new EQS. But the 34-inch 5K display curves beautifully in front of the driver and has crystal-clear graphics. This roomy sedan comes with stretch-out space in the back and the option of rear seats that individually recline. It’s practical too, with that high-lifting, low-load-height trunk lid revealing a two-level area with more than 26 cubic feet of room for luggage. And don’t forget there’s 9.9 cubic feet in the front trunk as well. Lucid plans to build fewer than 600 cars this year, stepping up to 20,000 in 2022. That being said, I’m expecting the Lucid brand won’t really take off until it rolls out its highly anticipated Gravity electric SUV, which is due to arrive in the second half of 2023. Tesla should be scared. Very scared. «

Exploring the OUTBACK
Outback Yachts’ new Outback 50 blends trawler style with cruiser performance—and it comes with a wonderful back deck By Howard Walker Andrew Cilla knows boats. For 40 or so years he headed up Fort Lauderdale–based top yacht brokerage Luke Brown Yachts. And full disclosure here, I came this close to buying a 55-foot Fleming trawler he had listed back in 2011. So, when Cilla decided the time had come to sail off into the sunset, he knew exactly what he wanted in the boat of his dreams. It would need to be in the 50-to-60-foot range. It had to be fast, but not too fast, with a 20-knot top speed. It should have trawler-style lines and be comfortable, economical, and easy to maintain. And it needed to have great outdoor space, with a big back deck for lounging. With the help of acclaimed Sarasota marine architect Michael Peters and John Olson, president of West Coast–based Offshore Yachts, Cilla 78
designed and built his dream yacht, named it the Outback 50, and launched the first example— for himself—at the end of 2019. What did he do once he’d obtained the keys? He cleared his desk at Luke Brown, packed a bag, threw the lines from his slip at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, and set off on a sixmonth “escape” cruise, all the way up to Northeast Harbor in Maine. Since Cilla’s cruise north, the highly respected Kha Shing Shipyard in Taiwan has built another three Outbacks, each with a base price of around $1,380,000. But what’s with that Outback name? It comes from the yacht’s 16-foot-long shaded rear deck and Cilla’s passion for heading “out back” to the deck for a little R&R. And this is arguably the
NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

yacht’s best feature in what is a multitude of best features. It offers space for a large dining table, a couple of Jet Skis, a small flotilla of kayaks, or a collection of loungers for just kicking back and taking in the view. Cilla’s other key requirement was that the rear deck be open at the stern. While there’s a folding stainless rail across the back for safety, it can be removed to open the cockpit up to the swim platform and the water. Fold back the huge glass doors between the cockpit and saloon, and the largely uninterrupted space flows from the helm station all the way to the stern. Below decks there’s a comfy master cabin in the bow and a twin-bed guest cabin, though only one head and shower, so it will work well for a cruising couple with a kid or two. Up in the salon there’s a nicely equipped galley alongside the helm station, which has its own sliding side door for access to the decks. A small sofa and a mirror-varnished fold-out table are ideal for indoor dining, while a levitating

TV takes care of movie nights. The interior of the boat is pretty narrow—the yacht’s overall beam is just 15 feet, 6 inches—but that’s how Cilla envisaged the 50, with a slender hull for economical performance and easy marina docking. Climb the cockpit steps up to the flybridge and, again, the space is huge. There’s room for a 10-foot inflatable boat with a crane for raising and lowering. Forward there’s a central helm, with a first-mate seat alongside and an L-shaped
sofa behind. From up here, the 360-degree visibility is outstanding. Standard power comes from a pair of fuelsipping 320-horse Volvo D4s with shaft drive, though the optional 425-hp Cummins, similar to those fitted to Cilla’s 50, are the ones to have, providing 18-to-20-knot cruising and 24 flat out. Throttle back to a lazy 8-knot trawler speed, and the 550-gallon tanks should take you more than 1,000 miles. The Outback 50 is a great looking, thoroughly well-planned, and swift trawler. eslie Gentzle knows the most wonderful time of the year need not be the most ostentatious. You’ll never spot an inflatable snowman in the backyard of the interior designer’s Imperial Golf Estates home—nor animatronic reindeer, oversized candy canes or gingerbread men, or light displays synced to the strains of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Instead, above her front door, a simple garland welcomes guests. Adorning it: starfish, sea grapes, and two large ribbons made of twine. “I do not like cold weather. I do not like red. I do not like green. I do not like fluff,” says Gentzle. “I like very natural stuff in my decor—oysters and rope, for instance. I want it to feel like it’s 100 years ago, we’re living on the beach, and decorating with whatever we can find there.” A fourth-generation Floridian, Gentzle grew up in Leesburg and studied at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa before moving to Naples in 2005. “I’ve always loved the beach,” she says. “That’s what drew me down here. And that’s what inspired my style.” Understated yet festive, Gentzle’s Christmas decor softens the over-

NATURAL BEAUTY When Gentzle married her husband, Mike, in 2008, she purged everything she had from college and her single years. In 2011, they purchased a 1980s ranch house, which they completely remodeled over the course of 10 months in 2020. “Last year was our first Christmas in the house as we originally imagined it,” she says. Their vision was an open, airy space that exudes tranquility with a soft palette of blue, taupe, ivory, and white—shades that mimic the seashore. In the family room, their tree is decorated in the same color scheme, which helps it blend effortlessly with their year-round decor, including a television console with dis-
tressed white tin doors, salmon-colored throw pillows, and an armchair upholstered in a sea-life pattern. Gentzle continues the marine theme subtly with her ornament selection. Blue crabs, sailboats, coral, starfish, and shells mix with more traditional motifs—angels, Christmas trees, and a manger—made from materials resembling driftwood. She collected the assortment at various places and times over the years. “Some came from the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, where we go every other year to see the lights,” she says. “But I’m always on the lookout. If I see something in July that I think would look good for Christmas, I snag it.” Gentzle got many ornaments and other accessories from Peddler’s Wagon in Eustis, just outside her hometown. “It has cool, eccentric pieces you wouldn’t find anywhere else,” she says. As much as Gentzle loves nature, the tree itself is artificial. “I’m a perfectionist,” she says. “I need to be able to bend and shape branches.” At the same time, she doesn’t want visitors to detect it’s a fake. “That’s my main qualm about tree skirts,” she says. “You can always tell [a tree is artificial] because there are no needles collecting on them.” In NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2021

lieu of a traditional skirt, she uses a wicker tree collar from Target. A candle lends that nostalgic evergreen scent. The dining table is set with a burlap runner, accented by deep blue goblets and napkin rings. As a centerpiece, she placed a giant clamshell above a mound of succulents and silver balls. The shell holds four pillar candles representing the four weeks and themes of Advent: hope, love, joy, and peace. “It’s important to me that my children [Jack, 11, and Weston, 7] know Christmas is really about Jesus, not Santa Claus,” she says. Gentzle’s nativity scene also emphasizes the reason for the season. Hers is a modest version, featuring only the Holy Family and the Three Wise Men in front of a trio of mirrors. “When we moved back in after the renovation, I knew I wanted a nativity scene that matched the rest of the house,” she says. The mirror idea came from a magazine. “It was a little out of the ordinary and I loved how it looked like windows from a church,” she says. “I kept my eyes open and found some at Hobby Lobby.” The fig rines wear ivory gowns with platinum-colored accents. After an exhaustive search, Gentzle finally found them “on Amazon, of all places.” In the kitchen, she places a row of cyclamens 88
on her windowsill—“that’s my one pop of red,” she says—below one of her favorite DIY decorations, her take on Florida snowflakes. She wrapped a tension rod with greenery and hung pearly, hand-beaded starfish from it. “I am very thrifty,” she says. “I can’t stand spending a lot of money on things I can make.” QUALITY TIME While Gentzle designs and executes the look for the front and interior of her home, her sons have complete freedom to decorate their playhouse in the backyard however they like. “We went to Dollar Tree and Walmart and let them go wild picking out decorations,” she says. Their picks: colored lights, red tinsel, garland, glitter bows, and a gingerbread mailbox. That whimsical playhouse gets a lot of attention the first Saturday of December when the Gentzles host their annual backyard potluck and movie night. For the last five or six years, about 25 neighborhood families have turned out to socialize, watch The Polar Express on a big inflatable screen, and snack on s’mores prepared with marshmallows toasted over a campfire “A friend who has since moved away suggested the movie night,” Gentzle says. “She
had the screen, and we had a fenced-in yard. After they left the area, we purchased our own screen to keep the tradition going because it was so much fun.” Another treasured tradition she has with her sons includes making simmer pots for neighbors and other family friends. “I don’t like purchasing gifts,” she says. “I prefer giving something homemade, plus I love the experience with my boys.” Her recipe: oranges, cloves, cinnamon, and little clips of pine needles. “Just add a little water and simmer on the stove all day,” she says. “It makes your house smell like Christmas.” On Christmas Eve, the family worships at Moorings Presbyterian Church, then enjoys a home-cooked meal starring Gentzle’s grandmother’s prime rib, capped by decorating Christmas cookies. “It’s a low-key but lovely holiday,” she says. «

Clockwise from above: Rochelle and Chris Shucart share a moment with their son, Carsten, before friends arrive; Carsten assists with the preparations; Rochelle dresses Carsten for the evening.
Every winter, the Shucarts go Christmastree shopping and select not one but three evergreens. “It’s definitely our son’s favorite tradition, because he gets to pick out his own little tree,” says Rochelle Shucart, adding that 8-year-old Carsten loves having it in his bedroom. The family also enjoys a number of local traditions that weren’t around when Rochelle was growing up in Naples, such as the Naples Christmas Parade. But Rochelle fondly recalls attending the Christmas play at her local church with her parents, and she looks forward to soon giving Carsten the same kind of magical candlelit holiday 98
experience in church. “But a Christmas tree in my room I did not have. So he’s already one-upping me on that,” she jokes. Rochelle says that she’s grown up alongside the town and has delighted in watching it become a great place to raise kids, with more activities, sports, and places designed for children. She has noticed many young families moving in, some of whom she meets through her profession, photographing expectant mothers and newborns. The influ of these new families is helping expand her eponymous photography business. Prior to establishing her firm, she loved working with her family in their plumbing

company. Yet she felt drawn to doing something on her own and started the business in 2011. After shooting weddings for a few years, she wanted to be able to stay home on weekends with her family. So she switched her focus to babies and hasn’t looked back. “It’s literally the best time of anyone’s life to capture,” Rochelle says. “When families see their first family portrait together holding their infant, the feedback is so touching.” She also loves working with mothersto-be. Not everyone feels pretty when they’re expecting, she says, yet many women tell her they feel beautiful after a photography session. “It’s another rewarding part of the job,” she adds. Her husband, Chris Shucart, also runs his own local business—but he went in the opposite direction in working with family. After years in the construction industry, he decided to start a real estate company, JCS Realty Group, alongside his father, James Shucart. The plan was for his dad to stay with the business for three years. That date came and went, and they recently celebrated the company’s seventeenth anniversary. “I honestly feel as fortunate as I could ever be that we get to spend as much time together as we do,” says Chris. The Shucarts agree on the importance of family time. They believe that their Midwestern roots (Rochelle’s parents left behind the snow in Ohio and moved to Naples a few years before she was born, while Chris’s family came from St. Louis) helped tie them together. Philanthropy also looms large in their relationship. Rochelle assisted with organizing the American Cancer Society fundraiser where the couple first met in 2007. “I enjoy giving back to my own community, where I was born and raised,” Rochelle says. Chris, too, focuses on making a difference, and they’re dedicated to supporting a range of local causes together. The couple attends several charity events each year. They were particularly

moved by one held by the STARability Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to connect people with disabilities to the community through recreational and life-skills classes, sports, and other programs. The participants, Rochelle says, are Naples residents who deserve the same opportunities as anyone else. Feeling inspired to become more involved, she co-chaired the foundation’s annual fundraiser in February. It raised $1.2 million despite having been reimagined as a virtual event and hosted within smaller, simultaneous gatherings because of the pandemic. Rochelle and Chris also support
the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, a great resource for kids that didn’t exist when she was growing up. In addition to these and other causes they contribute to, Chris plans to increase his involvement with Captains for Clean Water and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida to help preserve the area’s water quality. “It goes back to my passion for fishing and making sure that the waters around Florida are clean now and clean for our kids and future generations,” he says. Though they have witnessed many changes in Naples over the years, some things remain the same. They regularly so-
cialize with their friends Laurie and Grant Phelan, who live down the street and have known Rochelle since middle school. When their husbands met, Laurie recalls that the two men “clicked instantly.” Both couples attribute their friendship in part to their shared values. Chris notes that raising kids while running a family business is another thing they have in common. Despite their busy schedules, the Shucarts and Phelans make time for dinners and traveling together, with recent trips to the Kentucky Derby and Deer Valley Resort in Utah for skiing. Both families engage in a variety of sports, including volleyball and horseback riding for the Phelans’ four kids and lacrosse for Carsten. The Shucarts profess a love of the outdoors in general, from boating and fishing (though they don’t have time to fis as often as Chris would like) to skiing and running half marathons. “One of the things we enjoy a lot is traveling,” adds Chris. While the pandemic prevented them from hitting the road much during the past year, they did take the opportunity to explore New England landmarks they hadn’t yet seen. “We don’t even have to leave the country because there are so many places in America that we haven’t visited,” Rochelle says, noting that it can be easy for Americans to take this land for granted. The Shucarts also travel all over Florida for Carsten’s lacrosse tournaments. Be-

sides playing lacrosse, the second grader loves fishing with his dad and skiing, and he recently started viola lessons at school. With COVID-19 curtailing not only last year’s travel plans but many holiday traditions as well, Rochelle says they’re looking forward to the festive season this year. They usually hold Thanksgiving at their house, complete with decorations that celebrate autumn even in the midst of Southwest Florida’s perpetually sunny, warm weather. With both of their families living in Naples, Chris says the opportunity to spend more time together over the holidays makes everything more special. He and Rochelle plan to return to hosting a holiday gathering for family and friends with their three trimmed trees and other Christmas decorations helping bring the season to life. “I feel like everyone’s ready for the holidays,” says Rochelle. “They want to get together, they want to see each other. I think this year, it’s going to be great.” «

A Heart for
PEOPLE Beverly Fanning supports scores of causes to give a much-needed dose of care to PEOPLE IN NEED By Marianne McNee Photography By Pure Fotografica Makeup By Emma Loudon Schofield
T
he cornerstone of Beverly Fanning’s philosophy on life can be summed up by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s famous quote: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Through her Beverly B. Fanning Foundation, the Naples resident supplies love and caring as well as capital, volunteer services, and material goods, all with the goal of easing someone’s burden and improving lives.
“My foundation gives me the opportunity to extend my charitable giving and volunteering to organizations, events, or causes that I want to support—where I have a personal connection or wherever I see a need,” Fanning says. “Giving makes me happy. When I give to charities, I like that they know it’s from me, that I care about them. I do not take donations to my foundation; it is strictly funded by me. I enjoy working with charities that I’ve connected with

on different levels.” “Miss Bev,” as many of her most ardent fans know her, is a true Southerner, having grown up in Bristol, Tennessee, which is officially designated the Birthplace of Country Music. During her teenage years, she participated in walkathons and conducted door-todoor fundraising. After college at East Tennessee State University and a brief career in sales, Fanning married and settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where she lived for 39 years. During that time, she served as president of her sons’ elementary Parent-Teacher Association and high school athletic boosters organizations, honing her already prodigious volunteer, fundraising, and organizational skills. As the boys got older, Fanning continued to volunteer and support several charities, including the Atlanta Union Mission for the homeless, the Atlanta Police Foundation, Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, Samaritan’s Feet International, and many others. Occasionally, her family would vacation on the Paradise Coast. “As my children grew up, we often
visited Marco Island, so I knew I liked the area,” says Fanning. “About six years ago, I bought a condo in Naples. On visits, I’d open up my hurricane shutters and notice how peaceful everything was. After some life changes, I decided to make Naples my permanent home. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I absolutely love living here.” One of her secrets to feeling at home in a new town is to participate. “It’s true that you have to make the effort to get out and get involved with organizations to feel part of any community. There are so many opportunities in the Naples area to help, so many organizations doing great work. Everybody is willing to pitch in and mesh together.” As with many Neapolitans, she has taken up golf with a passion. She is a member at Tiburón Golf Club and Pelican Marsh Golf Club, and is also active in the LPGA Amateur Golf Association. While out on the course, Fanning often meets new people and learns about organizations or programs that might need a helping hand.
Fanning considers herself lucky to see her close family often—her older son, daughter-in-law, and grandbaby live in Atlanta, and her younger son lives in Naples.

“
YOU CAN DONATE TO DIFFERENT CHARITIES THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO SUPPORT. IF EVERYBODY’S MONEY GETS ADDED IN, IT MAKES A NICE DONATION FOR PLACES. HERE IN NAPLES, THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO PITCH IN AND HELP.”
“Playing golf, I met someone who works closely with Special Equestrians of Fort Myers, which got hit hard during the pandemic,” Fanning says. “She asked me if I had any extra funding. So I got on the phone, did my homework, and made a donation. I did the same thing for Naples Zoo. During the pandemic, without visitors, they needed a donation to cover the costs of taking care of those beautiful animals. Every little bit helps these important places.” A lot also happens away from the links, of course. Two years ago, Fanning became involved with the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), the organization raising money for area at-risk and underprivileged children through the Naples Winter Wine Festival every January. During the festival, NCEF community partners get a chance to meet the kids who benefit from the programs NCEF supports. At the 2020 event, Fanning met some young people from Rob’s Cottage, a Youth Haven group residence for homeless teens, who were dressed in their “dream career” uniforms. She spotted a young man sporting a Philadelphia Eagles football outfit “You have the wrong bird on your jersey,” Fanning, a dedicated Atlanta Falcons fan, remarked to Vonte Parris. He had just finished his senior football season at Golden Gate High School in Naples. Over the next six months, Parris and Fanning stayed in close contact. They collaborated with Laquentin Cotton, Youth Haven’s associate director of group home
operations, to secure a spot for Parris on the post-grad football team of IMG Academy, a Bradenton-based prep school for student athletes. After one year at IMG, he received several offers to play college ball and is now enrolled at Morgan State University in Baltimore, where he is pursuing his educational and athletic goals. “Miss Bev is truly one of a kind,” says Cotton. “She has a heart for people and a heart to transform lives. There is no price tag that can be put on genuine love and support, and then desire nothing in return. She’s still in day-to-day contact with Vonte. Because of Ms. Fanning, he has an opportunity to change the course of his life.” In addition to the organizations mentioned above, Fanning currently supports many other worthy charities, including St. Matthew’s House, the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Artis—Naples, Naples Botanical Garden, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society Bucket List Bash, Jingled Elves, Beverly’s Angels (no relation to Fanning), The Immokalee Foundation, Birthplace of Country Music (a nonprofit organization that seeks to perpetuate, promote, and celebrate Bristol’s rich musical heritage), the Tiger Woods Foundation, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, and others. In 2020, Fanning joined forces with T-Michaels Steak & Lobster House, Naples to offer free dinners to local area heroes on Veterans

In addition to using her time on the golf course to meet new people and learn about programs and organizations that might need a helping hand, Fanning looks to strengthen her golf game every week, significantly improving her handicap after playing for just two years. In her downtime, she likes to walk on the beach and ride her bike around Naples, often visiting the weekly farmers market on Saturday.
Day and, in a separate effort, to provide meals to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and front-line hospital workers at Physicians Regional Medical Center during the pandemic. Ty Ernst, owner of the restaurant, says T-Michaels could not take on these initiatives without help from community-minded supporters. The restaurant, Fanning, and another Naples resident, Bruce Upchurch, covered the costs for these programs. “Our Veterans Day dinner has become such a big event that we do it over two days now, providing more than 1,800 dinners to veterans,” says Ernst. “Ms. Fanning came in and let the vets know how much they are appreciated and really cheered them up.” She was also a key contributor, he adds, “to the gratefully received filet mignon dinners brought to the sheriff’s office and front-line hospital workers during COVID-19. I’ve never met anyone as humble and genuine in my whole life who gives as much as she does.” The Beverly B. Fanning Foundation’s mission is to fill urgent needs, either with goods, capital, or services, along with restoring people’s faith that caring, opportunity, and relief are at hand. “I would encourage those who need to find ways to be involved to reach out to organizations where they may have interests and offer help,” Fanning says. “Start the new year off making a difference.” «

Tyler Herro hates false narratives. And the main one that has plagued the 21-year-old Miami Heat guard since his breakout rookie season in 2019 is that he spends more time partying than he does on his game. Social media is partially to blame for that. One picture of him at a Jack Harlow concert and you’d think that all he does is spend his days seeing the rapper perform his song “Tyler Herro.” Forget the hours of practice Herro had put in prior to that concert—and now that he’s a father, the sleepless nights and diaper changes that are all part of early parenthood. Forget that he runs youth basketball camps, has given out backpacks to underprivileged schoolchildren in the Miami area, and showed up with teammates and coaches after the Surfside condominium collapse to hand out food and water to first responders. Some people just seem to fixate on him being a flashy manabout-town. Herro has grown up a lot over the past three years—and quickly too, because the NBA doesn’t care how young you are or how good you were in college. It expects you to play hard and put on a show just like the veterans do. And as Herro enters his third year of play, he’s eager to prove that his first year was no fluke. In the off-season, he gained 10 pounds of muscle and worked with one of the league’s premier trainers in hopes of helping the Heat make another playoff run. “I’m trying to prove myself,” Herro says. “It’s my third year in the NBA and I really want to show people what I can do.” At press time, Herro’s work seems to have paid off. He scored at least 24 points in four of the five preseason games in which he played, and led the league in scoring for that period with 112 points. Granted, it’s not the regular season, but it is a sign of what fans might see from Herro and the Heat.

“
WHETHER I’M STARTING OR COMING OFF THE BENCH, I WANT TO HELP THIS TEAM GET TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.” “You can expect a very good team this year,” Herro says. “We’ll be one of the best teams in the league for sure. We have a chip on our shoulders, and we’re trying to prove ourselves. Whether I’m starting or coming off the bench, I want to help this team get to the championship.” For Herro, moments like this are something he dreamed about when he was growing up in suburban Milwaukee. As a third grader, he was focused on playing in the NBA, and stories abound about him as a scrawny little boy who never backed down from a challenge on the court. He grew (as did his legend) and eventually the number of haters determined to see him fail did too. People turned on him when, as a high school player, he opted to play for the University of Kentucky instead of going with a Wisconsin program. He got death threats. People called him a traitor and a snake. Some even threw toy snakes at him as he played. But he played on. “It’s hard for me to understand why people hate Tyler,” says Travis Riesop, his high school coach. “Maybe the way he carries himself makes him seem cocky and that rubs people the wrong way. Maybe it’s because he’s a good-looking guy and people are envious.” The hate seemed to motivate Herro to play even harder and better until he left for his lone year as a Kentucky Wildcat in Lexington, where opposing fans booed him even more. They booed him because there was no denying how good he was—and because he was good, he wound up in the NBA at age 19, playing in Miami, where the expectations are high and the temptations are plentiful for any young person with a newly flush bank account. In that first year, he soared, but in his second, he came down to earth. The fans—his own—turned on him and tweeted at him to hit the gym. Frustrated, Herro sought out super-trainer Drew Hanlen of Pure Sweat Basketball. Among other things, Hanlen worked with Herro on his

jump shot mechanics and on creating more scoring opportunities. Part of that involved tweaks to Herro’s footwork, shiftiness, and pace. So far, Hanlen says he’s seeing good results. “You hear stories about Tyler being Mr. Miami, but the truth is all summer long all he cared about was improving his craft,” Hanlen says. “He would spend hours every day watching film and would come in two hours early just to watch Brad Beal [of the Washington Wizards] work out because he is mimicking some of the things he does. That just shows you the level of humility he has and how much he craves improvement.” Mindset helps. In a preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets, Herro had an off-night, scoring just seven points. But Hanlen says he kept playing hard and finding ways to contribute to the Heat’s 104-103 win. “I don’t think people recognize how much the mental side of the game matters,” Hanlen says. “Building up his confidence was something that will allow Tyler to take a big leap forward. He really worked his ass off to become different, not just look different.” Right now, Herro’s confidence is sky high. In the preseason, he says, once again, that he’s set on being an All-Star—and that he’s determined to do what it takes to get there. “I feel like I’m in the same conversation as the young guys coming up in the league who can be All-Stars, superstars one day…,” he told Bally Sports. “I feel like my name should be in that category too. I put the work in and I’m just continuing to get better every single day.” Twitter erupted as soon as these words came out of Herro’s mouth, with people calling him everything from “drunk” to “not even in the same league” as some of the players he mentioned. But who could fault a young man who single-mindedly pursued his childhood dream, accomplished it, and continues to set the bar higher for himself? Love him or hate him, Tyler Herro keeps pushing himself and those around him. If you’re a Heat fan, you know by now that Tyler Herro talks his talk. But he can back it up. It’s what makes him one of the most exciting players in the league—and it’s a big part of what he hopes will make the Heat a serious contender for this year’s NBA championship. «

YULE LOVE IT For the past two decades, Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop in Naples has been the last word in cookies, tarts, pastries, specialty breads, and holiday cakes, such as this Christmas indulgence. “I’m constantly looking for inspiration,” says Elizabeth Mikkelsen, who relies on her baker husband, Paw, to bring her ideas to life. “This rich chocolate cake is layered with a peppermint-flavore candy cane mousse. Drip cakes are popular right now, and the ombre buttercream cascading down the sides contrasts with the dramatic red colors. The snowflakes, chocolate bark, and fondant lollipops create a winter wonderland.” Mikkelsen advises customers to order well in advance, since “Christmas is our busiest week of the year.” (mikkelsenspastryshop.com)

Baked Treats FOR ALL The holidays can be particularly difficult for those on special diets. Few people know this better than Ruth Wardein, owner of Epiphany Gluten Free Bakery, the only bakery in Naples to specialize in 100 percent gluten-free products. “When my father went glutenfree, I didn’t want him to be excluded during special occasions and family gatherings,” she says. “Later on, when I developed celiac disease myself, I decided to help others and not have them feel left out.” She founded Epiphany in 2010, working out of her home kitchen, and opened her own store seven years later. She turns out dozens of items daily, ranging from breads and bagels to pizza crust, Danish, brownies, and desserts like tiramisù and trifles. Some of her best-sellers include soft and chewy gingerbread cookies, sour cream coffee cake, and a variety of breads, including almond poppy, ginger carrot, and pumpkin spice. In addition to gluten-free, Epiphany produces baked

goods that are dairy-free, nut-free, vegan, paleo, and keto-friendly. Epiphany offers cookie decorating classes in December. Specialties for Christmas morning include take-and-bake cinnamon rolls and quiche. According to Wardein, the best compliment someone can pay is that they can’t tell the difference between her products and regular baked goodies. “If people have an alternative source for tasty and healthy food, it’s much easier for them to stick to their diet,” she says. “Food is emotional. Holidays are a time for coming together, for feasting and happiness, and everyone should be able to participate.” (epiphanyglutenfree.com)

A Place TO SAVOR
Clockwise from bottom left: Carpaccio di manzo; tuna tartare; Anthony Quattrochi with his fiancée, Brandy Wong.
Anthony Quattrochi doesn’t just want you to have dinner at T42 in Estero. He wants you to have an experience. Although he’s worked in restaurants since he was 16, he was most deeply impressed by the years he spent at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, where he worked every food and beverage position in the resort. “I came to realize that hospitality boiled down to just treating people like people,” says Quattrochi. “You want to give them great service and exceed their expectations, but in the end it comes down to respect.” When he opened T42 in February, those were his guiding principles. The restaurant con-
cept is built around the communal enjoyment of small plates, many of which are based on traditional Italian dishes and American bistro classics. They include charcuterie assortments, flatbreads, crostini, sliders, and pasta alongside more elaborate seafood and meat offerings. “Our format encourages guests to try a range of foods and flavor profiles,” he says, “without committing themselves to an entrée they may not even finish.” On the liquid side of the menu, Quattrochi has also been an innovator. He sources his own line of private label wines from different regions in Italy and serves proprietary T42 spirits as well. Markups are low, and wines are priced to sell: house wines cost
$9 per glass or $30 per bottle, and nothing on the reserve list exceeds $100. He is building an exclusive Wine Club, which he will cap at 300 members who will eventually have private access to the restaurant one night each week. Top local musicians provide live entertainment and guests are encouraged to savor and linger. “It all comes down to making people feel at home,” he says, “and bending over backward to provide a great experience.” (t42bonitasprings.com)

WHAT’S BREWING The popularity of craft beer continues to boom in Southwest Florida. Enthusiasts are likely already familiar with Naples-based Riptide Brewing Co., Bone Hook Brewing Co., and Naples Beach Brewery, but beer lovers will also want to check out lesser-known entries on the ale trail. As recently as 2011, Fort Myers lacked a single local brewery. There are now six to check out, including Millennial Brewing Co. (millennialbrewing. com), sponsor of the city’s annual Oktoberfest celebration. Two others have been around nearly as long: Point Ybel Brewing Co. (pointybelbrew.com), a Germaninspired small batch brewery with 20 rotating taps, and Fort Myers Brewing Co. (fmbrew.com), where long-time home brewer Rob Whyte turned his passion into a thriving business. Newer kids on the block include Crazy Dingo Brewing Co. (crazydingobrewing.com), a “farm to pint” operation
Local breweries are far more than a place to drink beer. Most are kid- and pet-friendly, and they provide a place for family, friends, and strangers to come together in a spirit of camaraderie.
located in Southern Fresh Farms; Coastal Dayz Brewery (coastaldayzbrewery.com), based in downtown Fort Myers; and the deceptively named Palm City Brewing Co. (palmcitybrewing.com), home to 15-20 seasonal taps of IPAs, porters, sours, and pale ales. In Cape Coral, Big Storm Brewing Co. (bigstormbrewery .com) houses both a coffee roaster and a distillery in addition to a taproom with a full-service kitchen. Scotty’s Bierworks (scottysbierworks.net) turns out a selection of classic, European-inspired brews.

EAT + DRINK REINVENTION
Comfort Food, French Style When Hurricane Irma handed lemons to chef Sebastien Maillard, he made his own batch of delicious lemonade. Maillard was the proprietor of the popular French restaurant Le Lafayette when the storm ripped through Naples in September 2017. Visiting the location afterward, he was initially encouraged. “The exterior looked fine, and I thought we’d be able to reopen in 10 days,” recalls Maillard. “But then I went inside, and it was devastating—the ceiling had collapsed, and there was debris and water damage everywhere.” He bounced back in short order, opening another venue—Bistro La Baguette—on Tamiami Trail in East Naples. Initially intended to be temporary, the restaurant morphed into his new home when he was unable to resolve the repairs with his landlord. His sister, Valerie, runs the dining room along with his partner, Juan Camarena. “Fortunately, we were blessed with very loyal customers. When we opened on December 1, we were booked for the entire season.”

Maillard attributes his long-time success to the French comfort food he learned to cook as a child. Originally from Cannes, he was trained by his mother and father (from Normandy and Brittany, respectively) as well as his grandparents. He began working in restaurants at age 13. His menu is a roll call of such classics as escargot, foie gras terrine, sweetbreads, and bouillabaisse. “I’m old-fashioned,” he admits, “so I cook the traditional dishes I learned growing up. I want to represent my country and my heritage in the best possible way.” New at Bistro La Baguette is a farmers market, held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition to cheese, pâté, pastries, and local produce, the restaurant sells some of its more popular dishes, like cassoulet and beef Bourguignon to go. From above: Vérité’s Knights Valley Vineyard in Sonoma County, California; Adamvs is a sought-after selection for the holidays.
The holidays seem to demand indulgence—if not now, when? Looking back on the last year, these are the bottles I would reach for without hesitation.
CHAMPAGNE: The 2018 Cristal from Louis Roederer ($290) is still widely available, and it’s a beauty. It exhibits tropical hints and flavors of lime, vanilla, tart green apple, and red fruits. This Champagne makes an aggressive statement on the palate and can easily be matched with main courses of poultry, veal, or seafood in generous sauces. (louis-roederer.com) If you’re looking for an exercise in hedonism, try the 2007 Cuvée Nicolas François ($175), the luxury cuvée from Champagne BillecartSalmon. The acidity is mouthwatering, the texture is infused with glorious whispers of wild strawberries and red raspberries, and the finish is extraordinarily long. It has been described as intense, energetic, and powerful—all terms that fit this deep and rich Champagne perfectly. (champagne-billecart.fr) CALIFORNIA CABERNET: Denise and Stephen Adams, owners of two Bordeaux estates,
are making remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. While their flagship wine, Adamvs ($350, pronounced “adam-us”) is available in tiny quantities, Quintvs ($200) and Téres ($120) can be purchased on the open market as well as through the winery’s mailing list. These wines are complex and savory, delicious to drink and with no rough edges. California Cabernet doesn’t get much better than this. (adamvs.com) SENSUAL RUM: Ron Abuelo dates to 1908, soon after Don José Varela Blanco arrived in the newly formed Republic of Panama from Spain. At the top of the range is Centuria ($145), a family reserve matured in bourbon barrels with an average age of 30 years. The Ron Abuelo XII Años Two Oaks, Selección Especial ($75) is a blend of rums aged between eight and 40 years; sumptuous on the palate, it has an opulent texture, an intriguing balance between sweetness and spice, and a finish that seems to go on indefinitely. On the entry level, Ron Abuelo makes a 7 Year Reserva Superior ($27) and a 12 Year Gran Reserva ($41), with the latter a significant bargain for a high-quality añejo rum. (ronabuelo.com) NEW WORLD BORDEAUX BLENDS: Pierre Seillan, a sixth-generation winemaker practicing

his craft at Château Lassègue in Saint-Émilion, came to Sonoma and collaborated on Vérité with the late Jess Jackson. Each of the three wines—La Muse (93 percent Merlot), La Joie (84 percent Cabernet Sauvignon), and Le Désir (82 percent Cabernet Franc)—is stunning in itself, with great depth, pinpoint acidity, and appealing freshness. Vérité is sold through a mailing list, and after-market prices hover in the $350-$400 range. (veritewines.com)
THE BEST OF WASHINGTON STATE: Alex Golitzin, a Russian émigré and the nephew of the legendary André Tchelistcheff, established Quilceda Creek in 1978. Two of their wines are available to the public: the “CVR” Red Wine ($85), a blend of Cabernet from four designated vineyards, and the benchmark Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($200), which is drinkable now or capable of aging gracefully for decades. (quilcedacreek.com)
GEORGIA ON MY MIND: Once you get over the shock of paying $150 for a bottle of California Sauvignon Blanc, Georgia from Lail Vineyards is a memorable experience. Grown on a dry-farmed, three-acre site in Yountville, it is fermented and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. While the pedigree is California, the style brings to mind Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. (lailvineyards.com) «

BALANCE By Erika Klein
FITNESS
How BOUT It
Boxing can be intimidating. Billy Lyell, owner and trainer at The Sweet Science Boxing and Fitness in Naples, understands the common hesitation. “The big one is, ‘I don’t want to get punched in the face,’” he says. But, he adds, “boxing’s for everyone.” The full-body exercise helps to improve strength, speed, balance, and coordination on the physical side and self-confidence and grit on the mental end. “Confidence breeds more confidence,” Lyell says. “You see people where they’ll get started and a year later, they’re just a whole different person.” He currently has gym members aged 7 to 83, and he also runs a Rock Steady Boxing class for people with Parkinson’s disease. These classes, which focus half on physical exercises and half on boxing skills, address balance and general wellbeing. That translates to benefits like falling less frequently and managing stairs more easily. According to Lyell, one woman who first came to the studio with a walker progressed to balancing on Bosu balls (halfdome exercise balls) a year later. “Nothing’s impossible,” he says. “Just work hard, don’t put any limitations, and believe in yourself.” (thesweetsciencenaples.com)

BALANCE WELLNESS
TO ALL a Good Night Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone. Up to one-third of people in the United States deal with insomnia, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. It’s also the most common condition that Dr. Christopher Mendello, a board-certified sleep specialist in Naples, sees in his practice. He says that inadequate sleep, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome are also frequent complaints. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams), typically seen in older adults, is another problem he encounters. Lack of sleep is linked to conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Still, Mendello notes that there’s no set amount of time that people need to sleep; it’s different for everyone. “Don’t get hung up on, ‘I don’t get eight hours of sleep,’” he says. “It’s basically [you] need enough that [you’re] not tired.” If you’ve tried unsuccessfully to solve your sleeplessness, it may help to see a specialist. In the meantime, the doctor shares a few tips for improving sleep. » SET A SLEEP SCHEDULE. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. “When you start
changing those times significantly between days,” says Mendello, “your brain doesn’t know what to do. And before you know it, you can’t fall asleep.” » BED IS FOR SLEEPING, NOT SCROLLING. Avoid using your smartphone, other devices, or electronics in bed. “Bed is for two things that start with ‘s,’” he says. “And one ‘s’ isn’t ‘smart device.’” Watching television in bed is also a habit to break. » RELAX YOUR MIND WELL BEFORE BEDTIME. Often, “you hop in bed and now the room’s dark and you’re like, ‘Oh, now I can start focusing on problems,’” Mendello says. He recommends taking a few minutes during the day to think about daily life concerns and how to solve them so you can focus on sleeping once you shut your eyes. » EXERCISE (BUT DON’T WALK). A workout can help you sleep better, but it needs to be work. “Exercise doesn’t mean going for a walk,” says Mendello. “If you’re not huffing and puffing,
PSYCHOLOGY OF GIFTING
«
If you have trouble deciding what to get a loved one for the holidays, consider turning to science. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Marketing Research found that givers sometimes choose a gift they believe signals a close relationship with the recipient rather than selecting something from the person’s gift list. However, not picking something off the recipient’s registry does not necessarily make for better gifting. “You have to really know who you’re giving the gift to,” explains Naples-based Mary Armbruster, a licensed mental health counselor. That might mean “not giving something that you think is special, and
then it’s not exercise.” Physical activity can also help you lose weight, which may improve conditions like sleep apnea. » GET PROPER NUTRITION. If you have restless leg syndrome, make sure you’re getting enough iron and magnesium, and melatonin can help with REM sleep behavior disorder. For other sleep issues, avoid stimulants like caffeine and nicotine for several hours before bed, and don’t drink alcohol. While Mendello says it can help you fall asleep, it also leads to fragmented rest, meaning you wake up even more tired. Booze can also worsen sleep apnea. » ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES. Mendello says people often ask whether holistic remedies like chamomile or CBD oil can help. “My answer is maybe, maybe not,” he says, explaining that more research is needed. “If you think you sleep better, great, that’s all that matters.” (nppms.com)
instead just giving the person what they want.” Another study, cited in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin in 2018, found that practical gifts led the recipient to feel closer to the giver compared to higher-quality gifts. And in 2017, a Journal of Consumer Research study found that gifts of experiences strengthened relationships more than giving material objects. While this research is helpful to consider, Armbruster says it still comes down to knowing the person and avoiding projecting your own preferences onto your gift. What if you’re not close to the person, and they don’t have a registry? She says, “Get out of the way of your own gift giving and really, truly think about what the other would like.”

To gain confidence in creating a delicious holiday meal—and learn healthy cooking skills you can take into the new year—try taking a class. Local chef Steve Rose of Naples Private Chef offers in-home and outdoor classes for children and adults. He’s noticed in his classes that many young people lack rudimentary skills. “They don’t teach home economics anymore” in school, he says. “So you’ve got a lot of people, both male and female, who have no clue how to cook.” As a result, he says his basic cooking classes—which cover topics like knife skills, handling meat, and meal preparation—are his most popular. He’ll also often teach participants how to make healthier versions of their favorite restaurant foods. “We’re taking the complete mystery out of it, and they get confidence,” Rose says. “They come for more classes, and they build their repertoire of foods that they can make.” Rose teaches specific dishes, too. His specialty is paella, but he’s also adept in Italian and Greek cuisines as well as holiday meals and desserts. Here, the chef shares a recipe for a sweet treat. (naplesprivatechef.com)

Good Bones Bone health often deteriorates with age, but diseases like osteoporosis aren’t inevitable, says Dr. Cade Copeland, a family and pediatric chiropractor and owner of LifeStrength Health Center in Naples. “[Just] because osteopenia and osteoporosis are very common doesn’t mean they are normal,” he notes. He explains that older people often move less and the body adapts, contributing to bone issues. Nutrition and exercise can improve these conditions. Copeland points to calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, and vitamin D as main components for strong bones. You can obtain these nutrients through eating vegetables like brussels sprouts and chard, and getting appropriate sun exposure. For exercise, he recommends tennis. If you sit frequently, walking will benefit you. If you use a walker, you can still move around. (lifestrengthhealthcenter.com)
SKIN CARE
No Rough Stuff Exfoliating is a common part of skin care regimens, but sometimes it can do more harm than good. Dr. Vivian Wong, a board-certified dermatologist at Skin Wellness Physicians in Naples, says she doesn’t recommend many over-the-counter products—particularly in the case of physical exfoliants, which can scrape off the top layer of cells. “I know they feel great on the skin; it feels like your skin is really clean after the exfoliation,” she says. “But if the particles are too big, it actually can cause injury.” Chemical exfoliants tend to be gentler, but they come in different formulations and may be too strong. She recommends discussing your skin with a dermatologist to find the best solution for you, and if you choose to exfoliate, limit it to twice per week followed by a moisturizer to rehydrate your skin. Here, she recommends some good exfoliants. (skinwellnessflorida.com)
«
Micro-Exfoliating Scrub is a gentle physical exfoliant from SkinCeuticals. It exfoliates and hydrates your skin, and cleans and smooths your face.
«
LHA Toner, also from SkinCeuticals, uses lipo-hydroxy acid as a chemical exfoliant to help clear pores for smoother, more even skin. It’s ideal for oily skin and reducing breakouts.

ARTS ANGELS
Curtain Rises on Sugden Community Theatre Reimagination The cultural scene in Naples is growing at a lightning-fast clip. As Gulfshore Playhouse’s new campus begins to rise, The Naples Players have kicked off a $15 million capital campaign to renovate and expand the Sugden Community Theatre on Fifth Avenue South. By the time the “Upholding the Arts” campaign was officiall announced in late September, the nonprofit community theater had already reached 60 percent of its fundraising goal thanks to the generosity of local arts angels. In addition to prior commitments, Jay and Patty Baker have pledged $2 million in matching funds. The couple has chosen to name the main performance hall the Kizzie Theater. Many other lead benefactors i¾ ncluding Henry Price, Tanya and Denny Glass, David Byron and Vicky C. Smith, John and Joanne Fisher, Terry Libby, and Bob Brady and Kathleen Callahan w ¾ ill be

honored throughout the theater. David Corban Architects is leading the project. The plan includes upgrading all existing theater spaces and building a new theater for The Naples Players’ educational programs. “It will be renovated and reimagined from top to bottom,” says Bryce Alexander, executive artistic director. The Sugden Community Theatre has “been largely untouched since opening in 1998, yet our programs and community reach continue to grow exponentially.” Alexander says the revitalization could not happen without dedicated philanthropists who share a passion for live theater. “You don’t look very far in Naples without seeing an example of generosity and shared vision. People love Naples, and they continue to invest in our community. Because of that, it just keeps getting better and better.” (naplesplayers.org)

the managing partner of Porsche Naples, grew up in San Diego, California. He moved to Naples with his wife, Lily, two years ago, drawn to the area by “the opportunity to buy the store of my dreams and open my wife’s law firm.” The couple now resides in Naples with their two daughters, Hanna, 14, and Emily, 11, and three pets (an English bulldog, a miniature poodle, and a bearded dragon). Kao’s parents have also relocated to Naples full-time as of last year. While reflecting on what he enjoys most about his business, Kao says: “I love developing people and watching their careers grow and flourish.” His nonprofit passions keep his focus on children, especially the less fortunate. “I also dedicate a lot of time and attention on student athletes, sponsoring their events and necessities such as uniforms and equipment,” he says. He and his family have very much adapted to the Naples community. “I love the small coastal town feel where everyone knows each other,” Kao continues. “I love the beach. This reminds me of where I grew up.” Below, Kao’s top spots in town to…
