CULTURAL PREVIEW: DON’T MISS OUR ANNUAL 12-PAGE GUIDE TO HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON’S ARTS AND CULTURAL OFFERINGS. CHECK OUT “CURTAIN CALL,” BEGINNING ON PAGE 60.

VANESSA ROGERS / HAIR & MAKEUP: PHILIP DOUGLAS

As we approach Thanksgiving and the whirlwind of the holiday season, this year we begin it with a greater-than-ever focus on gratitude. When Hurricane Irma devastated many areas of our community less than two months ago, we learned what our town was made of. Residents rallied with nonprofits to seek out those most in need and provide them with food, water, shelter, heavy lifting to clear debris, and, in several cases, demolition work for homes that were condemned or flooded. Seemingly every hour on Facebook, there were volunteer opportunities and drop-off locations posted to aid those with critical needs, from Everglades City to Immokalee. First responders worked around the clock for weeks. Businesses did their best to reopen as soon as they could, and several restaurants operated on generators to offer the public complimentary meals when few people had power. Many also became much closer to their neighbors, checking on them to see if they needed supplies or even just a word of encouragement. The entire community came together with a united purpose and a generous spirit that inspired hope and warmed our hearts. This incredible outpouring of support reminds me of what Mr. Rogers famously said when he would comfort children on his iconic PBS show during scary events. He told them to “look for the helpers.” You didn’t have to look hard for the helpers in our community after Irma, which was deemed one of the strongest storms in history. The hurricane may have destroyed homes and buildings, but it could not touch our community’s spirit, drive, and determination to come back stronger than ever. Let’s not wait for Thanksgiving to give thanks to everyone who is making a difference in this town we love. When we raise a glass this social season, let’s also raise the level of gratitude we have for our community and each other.

GRIT, GRACE, & GRATITUDE As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s time to reflect on our blessings and count each one. This year, there is an even greater sense of gratitude as the community rebuilds after Hurricane Irma. We asked several local leaders to share their most memorable and grateful moments during and after the storm. — Anna Bjorlin “I’m grateful for Naples’ beauty and landscaping. When you see it every day, you don’t realize or appreciate what a beautiful town we live in, and one of the biggest things I noticed coming back was just how hard the trees were hit. Now that our town has been so damaged and hurt, it makes me want to see it grow and flourish even more. During the storm, the ceiling fell into my living room, and even though my fiance’s boss offered to put us in a hotel room, we declined. We spent more than 12 days without power and it was hot and difficult, but we wanted to stay on the property and take care of the horses and our dogs.” —Missy Saracino, Associate Director, Naples Therapeutic Riding Center

I’m grateful for my students and team members who made it through this, and the outpouring of support in our community. Times like these can really bring out the best in people. We have a great network of nonprofit organizations, and we all banded together to meet the needs of each other and the community. Even those without power were out there helping deliver food or water or finding someone a place to stay.” —Steven Kissinger, Executive Director, The Immokalee Foundation “I’m grateful for the heart and resilience of the great people of Naples and Marco Island. When the wind speeds get so high, ambulances can’t come out. My most memorable moment was when a father drove his 7-year-old daughter to the hospital during the height of the storm after she suffered serious internal injuries from a large piece of furniture falling on top of her. Seeing the determination of that father and the strength of the girl during the entire ordeal is why we do what we do.” —Dr. Hunter Brown, Emergency Medicine, Physicians Regional Healthcare System

I’m grateful for the performance of my management team on a 24/7 basis during a crisis. After that, it’s water and electricity. I’ll never forget witnessing the intensity of the hurricane’s winds. We lost water for about 15 hours after Irma and I was prepared to evacuate the hotel; we were taking water from the hot tub on the roof to flush our toilets, and if that had continued for much longer, we would’ve had to close.” —Phil McCabe, Owner and General Manager, Inn on Fifth “I’m grateful for our ability to communicate. We take for granted how easy it is to call someone on a cell phone and know they’ll pick up, or send an email that everyone gets. Our school district includes schools across the state, so staying in touch with everyone was extremely difficult during the storm. We had to keep lists of who could get texts, who could get emails, if they were at home or at work. You really appreciate it so much more once the power is back on and you can stay in touch with the rest of the community.” —Kamela Patton, Superintendent, Collier County Public Schools

“I’m grateful for my staff members. We needed people onsite at the DLC throughout the storm, and those workers were literally taking their lives into their own hands to care for and protect our clients. When the first band of heavy rain and winds came in, four spots in the center started taking water on at the same time, and then it was all hands on deck. I worked a mop and one of our doctors worked a squeegee. A couple rooms took in a couple inches of water and we didn’t know if the water would continue rising, but we got it under control.” —Scott Burgess, CEO, David Lawrence Center

I’m grateful for time spent with family. You get so busy from day to day, constantly trying to fit everything into your schedule, and the storm really put into perspective the importance of making time for family. During the storm, I was in the emergency operations center. After it passed, we had 30 to 40 calls pending because ambulances can’t leave when winds reach 45 miles per hour. We made a log of calls, prioritized them based on medical need and emergency, had our dispatch center call people back, and then we went out. After the storm, I was without power for 10 days, so I spent time with family members who did have power. It was so nice to be able to share that level of bonding and interaction you tend to take for granted on a daily basis.” —Tabatha Butcher, Chief , Collier County Emergency Medical Services

Animal Endeavors Naples Zoo’s inaugural Black and White Ball, held on November 10, kicks off a series of firsts for the nonprofit. The zoo will break ground this month on its new $2.6 million animal hospital, which is among several projects moving forward after it quietly raised about half of its $25 million capital campaign goal over the last three years. Jack Mulvena, the zoo’s president and CEO, and Jay Hartington, a zoo board member, talk to NI about the expansion and what’s to come. —A.B. NI: WHERE ARE YOU IN THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN? MULVENA: We have completed close to $4 million in improvements. We are using our upcoming Black and White Ball, which sold out in a month, as our official fundraising launch. NOW THAT YOU’VE PASSED YOUR HALFWAY MARK, WHAT’S NEXT? MULVENA: After the animal hospital comes a new visitor entrance and education center. Our current entrance was built when attendance was under 100,000, and now it’s over 400,000, so we’re bursting at the seams. There is also tremendous demand for educational and summer camp programs. Once we get the education facility built, we’ll double the number of children and adults we serve. HARTINGTON: About $2 million will also go to new exhibits, like a flamingo-

spoonbill exhibit, plus attractions like a South American trail, a play area for kids, a museum to talk about the zoo’s rich history, and major upgrades to the giraffe and alligator areas. HOW ARE YOU REACHING THE COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT? HARTINGTON: We have a couple of big donors, of course, but we want to give everyone the opportunity to chip in. Later in the campaign we’ll be reaching out to local schools to talk about what we’re doing so the children can get behind it. We’d also like to create a little competitive spirit between local businesses, where they’re affiliated to different donation requests and exhibits.

Call it a comeback. Paul Andrew, designer at Salvatore Ferragamo, has resurrected a shoe from the archives that was ahead of its time: the “F” wedge with a silk ankle strap ($895). Inspired by the profile of a ship’s stern, Ferragamo created the “F” heel in 1947 for the era’s bolder women. With curves that mimicked the lines of a cursive “F,” the shoe was an instant success and became known as the invisible heel for its light and transparent fit. Andrew reimagined the design from an original drawing to produce an updated version that embodies the marriage between technology and artisan tradition. Read on for more style revivals.

TIM WYNN OWNER, WYNN’S MARKET

MICHAEL CARONCHI

A member of a generations-old Naples family, Tim Wynn runs Wynn’s Market (wynnsonline.com) in Naples, one of the few independent grocery stores that is rich in history. In 1948, Tim Wynn’s grandfather first opened Don Wynn’s Sunshine Super Market on the corner of Fifth Avenue South and Seventh Street. Nearly 70 years later, the market is still family-run. After taking the helm from his father in 1990, Tim also launched Wynn’s Catering, a homedelivery service, and a fine bakery department featuring Wynn family favorites based on his mom’s recipes. He also takes a team to New York every two years to study the latest retail food trends at the Specialty Food Association’s annual Summer Fancy Food Show. —Anna Bjorlin

Left: Wynn Market’s popular coconut cake is a family recipe by Tim Wynn’s mother.

NI: What is trending in the food industry now? Wynn: With baby boomers getting older and millennials tending to be more health-conscious, the focus at this year’s trade show was gluten-free and non-GMO foods. Specialty cheeses, charcuterie, and craft beer are also in high demand, so we’ll bring in a lot of new items and healthier alternatives. We’ll also be adding superfoods like kale and quinoa into our salads and offering store-made pâtés and terrines that will be free of preservatives.

What is your most popular family recipe, particularly for the holiday season? Our coconut cake is our number-one seller during the holidays; we make hundreds of them and even have to stop taking orders. We first rolled the cake out about 25 years ago. The original recipe was my mother’s, then we had it fine-tuned by one of our bakers. Our Fit for a King cake, another of mom’s recipes, is a favorite as well. The base is a yellow cake, followed by pecan pie filling as the next layer that’s topped with a brown sugar crust and buttercream icing. The top layer bakes like a meringue and becomes light and flaky with a nice golden brown crunch on top. It’s a touchy recipe to make; no one would attempt it while my mother was alive, but now it’s a special we feature just a few times during season. 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

A new home mimics Old Naples style, down to the most masterful detail By Mary Thurman Yuhas photography by naples kenny

White millwork, including the custom coffered ceilings, and smoked hickory, wide-plank wood floors, underscore the cottage context.

N

aples’ storied beach cottages are highly sought after for their charm and inspired, cozy lifestyle. A Midwestern couple relocating to Naples wanted all the colorful, beachy allure of a cottage, but the cozy aspect appealed less to them. The solution? Commission a new build with the aura of yesteryear and all the modern conveniences. “The clients wanted an old Florida cottage without sacrificing space, so the goal was to build a sizeable house that didn’t look monolithic,” says Matthew Kragh, principal of Naples-based MHK Architecture & Planning. “We used a mixture of roof lines to break down the scale of the home so it appeared cottage-like.” Located in the heart of Old Naples, the two-story, L-shaped house is one block from the Gulf of Mexico and an easy walk to Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South, downtown’s main thoroughfares. Because the 5,300-square-foot, four-bedroom residence is situated on one of the largest corner lots in the area, Kragh was able to spread out the footprint to create a less massive appearance. Dormers on the second floor add character and de-emphasize the home’s height, and carefully planned landscaping further minimizes its girth. White concrete Hardiboard exterior siding mimics natural wood panels, enhancing that cottage feel. Exterior features, including the ma-

A butler’s pantry (above) provides extra space for storage and serving. The adjacent dining room (right) connects to an outdoor living room with a stone fireplace and summer kitchen. Shutters, varying roof lines, and an ample wraparound porch infuse Old Naples charm into the home.

hogany front door, louvered shutters, and a huge wraparound porch with a daybed swing, reinforce the look and lifestyle. As a bonus, Kragh says, “All materials in the home are climatically responsive to Southwest Florida’s most extreme weather conditions.” Inside, an arched ceiling in the entry forms the spine of the house. With the exception of the laundry room, vaulted wood ceilings are in every room, humanizing the scale while masterfully delineating spaces. Custom features abound in the residence. Case in point: the egg tempera painting by Donny Finley over the fireplace. The husband wanted a television. The wife didn’t. The compromise was a lift that backs the painting out of the wood frame and up into the wall as the TV slides forward into the frame. The process repeats in reverse when the set is not in use. One of the best examples of cottage style is the dining room. Cheerful and

sunny with a large window overlooking lush landscaping, the room is decorated in blue, white, and yellow with dark wood accents. A porthole window alludes to the style’s seaside roots, as do mounted fish and nautical art. The white-painted horse is an heirloom from the wife’s family. Offering the best of Southwest Florida’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle, the dining room sliding glass doors open fully to the outdoor living room and beyond. Pocketing glass doors integrated with roll-down screens open completely to the pool area. “One room flows into another,” Kragh says. “It is amazingly liveable.”

The outdoor staircase leads to the bunk room (above), a perfect spot for children. Opposite page: The master suite is a softer representation of the home’s palette of blue, white, and natural tones.

As a nod to the area’s heritage, reclaimed wood was used in the outdoor living room, in the backsplash behind the grill, and above the stone veneer fireplace. Behind the fireplace is a sitting area with a fountain and fire pit, underscoring the notion that everything is interconnected. Just off the lanai—making it unnecessary to walk in the house with a wet bathing suit—is a door that leads to a powder room with mosaic tile wallpaper. Another powder room features a vanity from an antique piece that served as a side table in the owner’s previous home. Reusing and upcycling items is one of the hallmarks of cottage design. In the husband’s office, the color scheme tends more to the masculine without departing too much from the light, cheerful vibe of the rest of the home. Custom-stained antique pine built-ins with wormwood cabinets and marble desktops lend warmth, while the custom coffered tongue-and-

groove ceiling brightens things up. The soft, easy-breezy ambience is beautifully captured in the master suite. At the end of the entry hall, two antique French doors lead to the commanding space. A vaulted, trussed ceiling conveys the cottage aesthetic, while painted and distressed woods make the furniture look like it has been loved through many generations. No luxury was omitted from the enormous master bathroom, which boasts built-in cabinetry, a walk-in closet, and a walk-in spa shower. This residence is everything the owners desired: all of the charm of an Old Naples cottage imbued with the latest technology, lighting control, and impact-glass windows. It was a win-win for the client and the architect. As Kragh tells it, “This home now is one of the models MHK uses to create a classic Florida cottage with a larger square footage base.” «

Turn the Tables

Entertain guests with a modern spin on traditional dining room decor By Liza Grant Smith

A WARM WELCOME Troy Beasley of Beasley & Henley Interior Design set the tonal temperature to warm and focused on sleekness for this Naples dining room. “The goal was to create an amazing dining room that is modern, warm, and welcoming for a retired couple and their visiting family,” he says. “The colors are calming, and the chic seating is comfortable and unintimidating.” The artwork and table lend a modern vibe, and the double chandeliers give the space an unexpected glam accent. Beasley & Henley Interior Design, Naples (239-7741005, beasleyandhenley.com)

OCEAN VOYAGE Make waves in dining room decor with Corbett Lighting’s Dolce light ($3,260). This sea-inspired piece features champagne-colored capiz shells and crystal strands cascading from undulating iron frames. Wilson Lighting, Naples and Bonita Springs (wilsonlighting.com)

ON THE ROCKS Serve in style with Joseph Williams’ ice bar napkin rings ($25 each). Handcrafted out of natural selenite crystal, believed to promote mental clarity, these pieces bring harmony to modern tables. Neiman Marcus (neimanmarcus.com)

TIPPING THE SCALES Invite Kim Seybert’s Python placemats ($176 for a set of four) to slither in for elevated style with a wild side. The blue faux-snakeskin finish is fancy enough for formal affairs but cool enough for an impromptu ladies’ lunch. Clive Daniel Home, Naples (239-261-4663, clivedaniel.com)

REEF THE REWARDS Dive into underwater grandeur with Cristobal buffet plates ($175 each) from Raynaud. The coral pattern with gold accents reflects the artistic eye of its creator, famed interior designer Alberto Pinto. Saks Fifth Avenue, Naples (239-592-5900, saksfifthavenue.com)

GLASS HALF FULL The rounded globe and larger capacity of these Juliska Amalia white wine glasses ($68 each) allow rich Chardonnays and dry Rieslings to convey complex layers of aromas, while the signature swirl and berry accent add visual appeal. Gattle’s, Naples (239-2624791, gattles.com)

GOLD RUSH Spoon up sumptuousness with Michael Aram’s palm gold flatware ($110 for a five-piece place setting). Inspired by woven palm leaves, this stainless steel collection with a gold finish is the epitome of tropical elegance. Fabec Young and Company, Naples (239-659-5501)

CATCH THE PRIVATE SIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S PREMIER NATIONAL PARK Kruger National Park is the undisputed crown jewel of South Africa’s parklands and game reserves. But given the surfeit of lodges and public camps located within Kruger, there are days when vehicles seem to outnumber even the impalas. Enter Singita Lebombo Lodge (singita.com), a 13-suite, high-design safari lodge on the eastern edge of the park with exclusive rights to a massive swath of Kruger (33,000 acres to be exact). Singita’s concession extends through four eco-zones, with the lodge itself perched above the N’Wanetsi River. This euphorbia-dotted landscape happens to be prime rhino and big cat real estate

and home to two of the world’s 13 wild white lions; I was lucky enough to see one on my last safari. Twice-daily game drives are nothing short of exhilarating, but creating private moments with fauna is the true luxury. Add to the fold architecturally stunning open-plan suites, world-class amenities (like a full spa, a lounger-lined swimming pool, a stocked wine tower for oenophiles, and a glassenclosed, restaurant-sized kitchen), plus a food and wine program that would impress the most demanding of gourmands, and you quite possibly have the superlative safari experience in all of South Africa.

2.

EXPLORE SOUTH AFRICA’S WILDS ON FOOT While it may be the fifth largest in the country, Madikwe Game Reserve remains South Africa’s best-kept secret. The relatively young reserve is composed of reclaimed farmland along the South Africa-Botswana border and, in 25 years, has blossomed into thriving hill country where rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, and lions roam. At the core of this conservation narrative lies the five-villa Mateya Safari

Lodge (mateyasafari. com), which oozes classic safari glamour and celebrates the gamut of pan-African art through interior design, all the while offering one of the most riveting experiences in Africa: the walking safari. If willing, you can leave the Land Rover behind and head into the bush on foot, alongside Mateya’s expert rangers. Watching the shenanigans of an elephant herd from a vehicle is amazing, but witnessing this spectacle at eye-level—and completely exposed—well, that’s another experience altogether. Nature enthusiasts, scientists, and intellectual types will appreciate guides who impart near doctorate-level knowledge as part of the Mateya visit.

at Ulusaba (virginlimitededition.com/en/ ulusaba), Sir Richard Branson’s private safari concession (part of the greater Sabi Sands reserve), and prepare to saturate memory cards by day and luxuriate by night. Set high atop a rocky outcrop, the lodge delivers sublime panoramic views of the surrounding wildlife-speckled grasslands from en suite terraces, multilevel viewing decks, an outdoor pool, a spacious lounge, and even a state-of-the-art gymnasium. With an endless pour of fine wine, decadent snacks, and Michelin star–level cuisine never far from reach, Ulusaba equally pleases the sybarite less attached to the camera and more interested in the pampering aspects of safari.

Though dreamy, safaris entail intense days in the bush, and reaching South Africa requires

long-haul flights and jet lag adjustment. Consider starting on a relaxing note in the proximate Bazaruto Archipelago in neighboring Mozambique. Flight schedules on Airlink (flyairlink.com), the regional feeder airline under South Africa Airways, work well with U.S. arrivals into Johannesburg, getting you to the beach town of Vilanculos within hours of landing. From there, hop on a boat to Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort (bazaruto.anantara.com), a private paradise blessed with jewel-tone waters, a palm-laced coastline, towering interior sand dunes, untouched coral reefs, and underwater deserts. By day, amble along the beach for hours without seeing another human and later retreat to your villa for the sunset as dolphins dance in the distance and dhow boats return to the Mozambique mainland. Gorge on sublime seafood and request to “Dine by Design,” where private meals are served on a sandbar. You’ll soon be relaxed, recharged, and ready to take on the African bush. «

Singing the Blues A turn behind the wheel of Bentley’s extraordinary Bentayga SUV will leave drivers scrabbling for superlatives

aul Newman’s peepers were never this blue. The waters off Bora Bora? Not even close. Leonard Cohen’s famous raincoat? Way too dark. If you want to gaze at the most mesmerizing shade of Windex-blue mixed with the azure of Capri’s Blue Grotto, look no further than the hue adorning the latest Bentley Bentayga high-luxe SUV I’ve been driving. They don’t even call it blue. Its official, rather unimaginative title is Silverlake. But to me, it’s quite possibly the most breathtaking, lustinducing Pantone to ever adorn a vehicle. And I’m not alone in my thinking, judging by the frenzied attention of camera phone–toting pedestrians, selfie-seeking passersby, or the nice lady who rolled down her BMW window and screamed, “Awesome color!” from the middle lane of I-75—at 75 mph. Most auto enthusiasts know all about the Bentayga. It’s the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious, most fabulous SUV to ever roll out of any supermarket parking lot. Yes, a Bentley SUV. Still seems kind of weird. This is one handsome beast, with all the requisite honeycomb 58

grilles up front and huge 21-inch rims at each corner. That being said, the lines are just a tad predictable; it’s as if the designers took a bunch of Bentley styling cues, threw them in the automotive blender, and stuck with what came out. Ultimately, it lacks the elegance, class, and fluidity of, say, a long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography. But open the hefty door, slide behind that two-tone leather wheel, and prepare to go giddy with excitement. The entire cabin is nothing less than a masterpiece of interior glam, where purple-blue leather graces the dash and chalky-cream hides cover the seats. Architectural Digest rarely features New York penthouses this sumptuous. The real beauty is that everything is customizable. Bentley’s “your wish is my command” Bespoke department will install any color combo of leather, wood veneer, and carpeting buyers can dream up. Want to get creative? A call to Bentley’s Mulliner division can lead to everything from one-of-a-kind leather luggage to stone veneers for the dash to a custom basket for alfresco picnics, crafted by royal furniture maker David Linley, nephew of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Local arts organizations are taking their show on the road and bringing in new audiences as part of an ongoing effort to extend their reach to underserved communities and non-traditional venues. The new So Much Drama program—a collaboration between Naples Philharmonic musicians, Gulfshore Playhouse actors, and Collier County Public Schools (CCPS)—introduces high school juniors to the performing arts at Artis— Naples. This year, the inaugural program will culminate in a special performance, April 26-27, of Starcrossed, which depicts the Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet with a dramatic mix of theater and music. It’s the first education partnership between Artis—Naples and Gulfshore Playhouse, as well as the first field trip to Artis—Naples for eleventh-grade CCPS students, according to Bonnie Thayer, director of education and community partnerships at Artis—Naples. “We expect great success and plan to continue offering the series as an annual performance for high school students, each year with a new program,” Thayer says. In Marco Island, Gulfshore Opera performs a Very Verdi Concert on January 19 at Rose History Auditorium at the Marco Island Historical Museum (colliermuseums.com). Get ready to be captivated by arias, duets, and musical scenes from powerful moments in popular Verdi operas. On February 8, its Grand Opera Nights tour visits the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island with a reception at the Marco Island Center for the Arts (marcoislandart.org). Professional, costumed soloists will stage scenes from great works such as Carmen, Merry Widow, and West Side Story. Naples Botanical Garden (naplesgarden.org) also partners with Gulfshore Opera (gulfshore opera.org) for two Classic Cabaret performances on January 24, when professional artists in residence will perform an informal concert of popular songs with a jazz combo.

Q&A

BRYCE ALEXANDER

Bryce Alexander became artistic director at The Naples Players (naplesplayers.org) in October 2016 after a stint in Denver at a semi-professional theater company for actors with disabilities. NI: What’s your vision for The Naples Players? Alexander: Integrating professional quality and community engagement with inclusive theater, and to be able to show the rest of the country what you can do. We are connecting with a [new] set of audiences by implementing sensory-friendly elements for children and adults specifically with disabilities. How do you accomplish that? We started with sensory-friendly classes. We made it a welcoming environment and took away financial strain with scholarships. This season, we will progress to sensory-friendly performances for two of our shows—December 19 for Miracle on 34th Street and April 3 for Music Man. We keep theater lights on at all times during those performances. We limit audience capacity, regulate temperature and decibel readings, and don’t have a lot of actors entering the stage. We have sensory guides that list potential stimulating elements and what time they’ll happen. It’s sort of the opposite of what a big performance should look like, but it’s very impactful. What else are you planning this season? Besides those two shows, we have six more, all with great diversity. The theme this year is finding community harmony and what it means to fit in. For the first time, we’re doing free performances of Taming of the Shrew outside on the plaza. They will include workshops that discuss gender roles and violence, and how to be what we call “upstanders” in the community.

ROMANCING THE ARTS Put an artistic twist on date night this season with red-hot performances focused on fanning love’s flames, whether through chemistry, comedy, or both. As part of its Taste of Opera series throughout Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties, Gulfshore Opera inspires a romantic mood on February 13, with a Valentine sampling at Shangri-La Springs in Bonita Springs. Lovely music in a windowed garden setting follows an elegant, organic dinner. (gulfshoreopera.org) Through November 12, Marco Players presents Sex Please, We’re Sixty. Hilarity erupts at a bed-and-breakfast where a studly neighbor apparently keeps the women returning year after year. On the flipside, Center for the Arts Bonita Springs stages the farcical No Sex Please, We’re British April 11-14. The play ran for more than 6,000 performances to sold-out audiences in London. (themarcoplayers.com) Set in the sensual Havana of yesteryear, TheatreZone’s Copacabana centers on the

infatuation of a bartender with a showgirl, depicted with big drama and splash through Barry Manilow’s eponymous hit. Performances are scheduled for March 8-18. (theatrezone-florida.com) World-renowned soprano Renata Scotto (pictured below) directs an Opera Naples production of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore at Wang Opera Center February 23-24. Performed in the Italian bel canto tradition, The Elixir of Love is a romantic comedy that resolves the dilemma of two starcrossed lovers. Then, on May 10, Opera Naples teams up with the Naples Philharmonic at Artis—Naples to present The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart’s classic masterpiece of love that takes comedic turns. AT A GLANCE

s part of its Broadway series, Artis— Naples hosts An American in Paris, January 16-21, during its first national tour. The award-winning musical follows an American soldier who travels to Paris to embrace its alluring magic post-World War II. On January 25, the venue also presents Model for Matisse, an award-winning film that documents the friendship between painter-sculptor Henri Matisse and his muse, Sister Jacques-Marie. A filmmaker’s Q&A follows the screening. Two art exhibitions at the Baker Museum also shine a spotlight on Matisse; through January 31, “French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850–1950,” showcases some 65 works from the Brooklyn Museum’s European collection, while “Expressions: Matisse and Modern Art” focuses on works by contemporary artists who have helped define avant-garde style, many of whom drew inspiration from Matisse. On a more serious note, Gulfshore Opera takes audience members on a Vocal Tour de France at Artis—Naples on January 31. The performance surveys the best of French vocal music traditions from the court of Louis XIV to the Parisian cabarets of the Moulin Rouge. Gulfshore Playhouse takes on Moliere’s classic comedy Scapino during a February 17 to March 18 run. Adapted to modern plot lines by associate artistic director Jeffrey Binder, it follows a crafty servant enlisted in a hilarious scheme to help two men whose girlfriends’ fathers are rival mafia bosses.

With two international festivals and comprehensive series making a name for the area as a film lovers’ mecca, Naples is at the forefront of a nationwide trend, says David Filner, vice president of artistic operations at Artis—Naples. “It is, nationally, my sense that people are more interested in quality films than they ever have been,” Filner says. “There may be fewer people at the multiplexes because they are looking for quality over blockbusters. The population in Southwest Florida certainly reflects that.” Upon acquiring the prestigious, 9-year-old Naples International Film Festival (NIFF) this year, Artis—Naples expanded its already robust calendar of screenings, movie lectures, and combination orchestra-film events. This season’s big music-film collaboration presents the unforgettable classic and romantic drama Casablanca January 9-13, with the Naples Philharmonic performing Max Steiner’s beloved score. “We are using film to bring in a wider audience,” Filner says. “Film is a multidisciplinary art form—there’s music,

acting, costumes. It fits what we’re doing at Artis—Naples.” The venue hosted its first NIFF in October, and Filner plans to use Artis—Naples’ monetary resources and artistic dimension to grow the festival in upcoming years and deepen the presence of film throughout the season with more performances and educational programs. The Bonita Springs International Film Festival, January 25-28, is also expanding in its third year, from more than 50 films last year to more than 70 at the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs. The center is also continuing its year-round Films for Film Lovers Series every Monday evening in the Moe Auditorium & Film Center.

The 2017 NIFF included filmmaker Q&As and a screening of La La Land with a live orchestra.

nspired by the exuberance of the Renaissance era, we step back in time with a dinner party designed to illustrate visions of grandeur. “I’m always looking for layers and movement and this [scene] is very ornate, with lots of gold and Baroque-period styling,” says Steven Bowles of Steven Bowles Creative, who conceptualized the party theme. The dining table centerpieces showcase the rich colors of fall, including burgundy dahlias, dark red peonies, red amaranthus, salmon-colored ranunculus, hydrangeas in antique red and green, and even pheasant feathers for a touch of old-world drama. Flower risers hold up the curly willow branches and create height to display the bursts of blooms. The table is draped with ornate fabrics and layered with magnolia leaves, weeping eucalyptus, and wheat—as well as fruits and vegetables

like lemons, artichokes, and apples. It is a simple yet creative idea that anyone hosting a dinner party can replicate in their own way. “It’s not about what you use, it’s how you use it,” Bowles says. “Forage some branches and place them down the middle of the table to create a runner and add fruit to that.” Votive candles hang above the table to further illuminate the dining experience. “Candles are never out of style,” Bowles says. “In a pinch, you can use candles as a centerpiece. Try a tall candle for the center and mix votives with pillar candles. Place the candles down the middle of the table or bunch them together in different areas.” Keeping with the rustic theme, the main course of this soiree is simple, fragrant, and stunningly visual. Wild quail is served atop spinach and wild rice with a mix of grains, figs, raspberries, seeds, and nuts. “When you think Renaissance, you think game hens of some fashion, and I thought quail would go nicely,” says chef Jay Wolfson of Prestige Catering. The table is layered in galax leaves, while the stand is wrapped in Spanish moss and curly willow branches. “The idea was to make the table and chairs look like they were growing from the earth,” Bowles says. “I wanted the elements to enhance what was naturally beautiful.” The woodsy bar vignette serves sangria complemented with white peaches, raspberries, citrus, and pomegranate seeds. Bowles added shelving and a wooden back to a garden arbor. “I wanted to make the bar more than just a place to get a drink,” says Bowles, who weaved in different types of branches to create a garland arch around the front frame. “You have a brief amount of time to capture someone’s attention,” he notes. “You want to engage their mind and touch their senses.” —Teri Evans

READY TO ROAST

Taste Taste BY CHELLE KOSTER WALTON

Oven-roasted onions, asparagus, beets: Who doesn’t love them? A newer local trend adds fruit to the roaster. “A favorite food memory was a dish in France with roasted fresh peaches and ice cream,” says Tony Ridgway, chef and longtime Naples restaurateur, who operates Ridgway Bar & Grill and Tony’s Off Third. “The great thing about roasting [is] it offers a different flavor dimension. I am intrigued with the notion of roasting fruits and vegetables and have been experimenting with it to add that [element] to the menu.” For home cooks preparing a traditional roast chicken with roasted vegetables, Ridgway offers a tip: Be careful to space the vegetables apart, so you’re getting the roasting effect rather than a steaming effect.

CHEF BROOKE KRAVETZ

MICHAEL CARONCHI

Pancakes were too easy for Brooke Kravetz to make for her second-grade sleepovers. Stuffed crepes? More of a challenge, more her style. Every mom wanted her recipe. And just like that, she unknowingly started moving toward a future career in the culinary arts. Kravetz got sidetracked by a vision to become a doctor, but part-time kitchen gigs eventually trumped her jobs in hospitals, labs, and medical offices. Cambridge School of Culinary Arts in Massachusetts and a certain cookbook furthered her aspirations and inspirations. In 2015, she moved to Naples and worked as executive sous-chef at Sea Salt. In May 2017, she took the position of chef de cuisine at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort’s Baleen restaurant, and quickly began making a solid impact on the menu. Her style takes classic flavor pairings and presents them in fresh ways.

Food hero: Thomas Keller. I picked up his The French Laundry Cookbook and cooked every recipe in it. He really influenced my style. Cooking as sport: I grew up playing sports and soccer in college. It’s the same adrenaline rush and team spirit. And the kitchen has that slightly competitive atmosphere to improve your timing and quality. Every day is training. Foodie travels: I studied a summer in Florence. It became my favorite city. In the past few years, I have toured France—Paris, Lyons, the French Riviera, and Nice. Last year, I traveled all of Europe. The Central Market in Italy was most inspiring. In her fridge: I love pickles—regular ones from the store and all the different veggie pickles I’ve made. Favorite Naples restaurants: Sea Salt and Bar Tulia. Italian is still my go-to; my mother is half Italian. Also, the tacos at Molcajetes. Common cooking mistake: Not heating the pan before adding the oil and ingredients. My mom does it all the time. You end up sweating or steaming the food and losing that nice crispness and caramelization. Latest food passion: Gulf seafood. I grew up with halibut, monkfish, and cod. I especially love golden tilefish. It’s so mild and tasty—and sustainable.

LOCALS SWARM

THE BEVY

The Bevy (naplesbevy.com) wears its “Sip + Socialize” tagline proudly with a U-shaped bar that dominates architecturally and reinforces its mission to encourage mingling at this latest hot spot. A local, after-work crowd begins to gather for happy hour in the sleek new building on Twelfth Avenue as soon as the doors open at 3 p.m. Open-sided dining rooms with topiary walls and arches, and sky-lit ceilings flank the centerpiece barroom. The crowd spills into these spaces when the bar and its communal table fill up or it’s time for a sit-down meal. The Sergeant Pepper martini (green chili vodka and prickly pear liqueur) and other clever craft cocktails create buzz, but the deviled oysters (cornmeal fried and placed atop deviled eggs with a candied bacon garnish) and honey-glazed pork belly tacos are just as enticing. At The Bevy (short for “beverage”) the food is far from an afterthought.

SEAFOOD AQUA The restaurant’s look is fresh and airy, just right for the seafood-centric menu. 862 Fifth Ave. S., Naples (239-213-1111, aquafifth.com)

FAVORITE GROWERS

THE LONGSTANDING FARM-TOTABLE MOVEMENT IS STRONGER THAN EVER IN NAPLES, WHERE CHEFS CONSISTENTLY TURN TO FARMERS THEY KNOW AND TRUST TO SOURCE PRODUCE, EGGS, AND MEAT. WE TALKED TO A HANDFUL OF AREA CHEFS TO FIND OUT WHICH LOCAL FARMS THEY RELY ON—AND WHERE YOU CAN FIND THEM, TOO.

A clear favorite of several restaurateurs, Inyoni Organics (239-980-3605) sells produce at farmer’s markets in Naples and the Purple Spoon Culinary in Bonita Springs. Owner Nick Batty took over his father’s ornamental pineapple farm and converted it into an organic operation growing a wide variety of produce. Batty’s still known for his sweet summer pineapples, but The Bay House chef Andrew Hunter also buys everything from “the most beautiful baby lettuces” to French breakfast radishes. “During his growing season, we make sure to talk twice a week, and I buy whatever he has available because I know it will be delicious,” Hunter says. Chef Alexander Bernard at Alexander’s Restaurant favors Batty’s sprouts, turnips, and cucumbers. He also relies on Oakes Farm’s (oakesfarms.com) seasonal crops, Jackman Ranch

96

including zucchini and tomatoes, which are sold at its retail outlets, Oakes Farms Market and Food & Thought in Naples. For citrus, Lisa Boet at Chez Boet favors South Naples Citrus Grove (naplescitrus. com), which operates a retail store during season and also sets up a stand at local farmer’s markets. Chef Jim Sleep at Angelina’s in Bonita Springs sources eggs from Circle C Farm (circlecfarmfl.com) in Bonita Springs. This first-generation family farm offers everything from grass-fed beef to free-range chicken to local honey. It hosts farm tours, foodie events, and tastings that are open to the public. “We currently use their eggs on our menu every day,” Sleep says. “But we use other meat items and their honey for wine dinners.” Chef Jason Goddard at Barbatella is a fan of the Wagyu beef at Jackman Ranch (jackmanwagyubeef.com) in Clewiston, when he can get it. “I went out to the farm, had the hayride, walked the fields, and liked what I saw,” he says. “They have a 100 percent grass-fed French variety of meat.” As demand continues to grow for locally sourced, organic, and non-GMO food, area chefs say strengthening their relationships with their farmers makes all the difference.

THREE CHOICES... ONE LOCATION FUJIYAMA OF JAPAN – STEAKHOUSE & SEAFOOD Our Hibachi-style cooking has become a favorite in Naples for many years. Specializing in the finest cuts of beef and the best seafood we can find right here on the Gulf, you will quickly be mesmerized by this great and entertaining style of cooking. Everyone gathers around the Hibachi Grill and the show begins (The lighting of the Volcano is a site to see). It begins with our homemade oriental broth, salad using an oriental-based mayo, and everyone gets a grilled shrimp appetizer with 2 dipping sauces. There is white rice, fried rice, and almost any special request you might have is welcome. When well-marbled meat, fresh seafood, and vegetables that come to us from the farm are combined with this demonstration style of showmanship cooking, it is a combination that can’t be beat. Reservations on weekends are “highly” suggested … but we can almost always squeeze in a twosome.

Our Chef team hails from Tokyo, so we started with the best thinkers. Then we went to the very best seafood suppliers for our made-from-scratch crab cake, king crab leg, and dumplings, also known as pot stickers. And for the fanatics who crave fresh sea urchins ... we have them. All our Sushi rolls are prepared, sliced, and rolled right before your eyes. The display case is indicative of … FRESH & THE BEST. Come join us, if you like seafood, especially spicy calamari. We prepare only the best for you. If you LOVE SUSHI, then you’ve found a new friend and a new home.

HAROLD’S PLACE

239.263.7254

naplesharoldsplace.com

We are a long-standing Naples tradition! Opening as a simple little beer joint with 5 items on the menu in 1982, Harold’s Place has blossomed into a popular eatery for locals and visitors alike. Known for its burgers, and winning that Best Burger Award going back to the early 1990s, the menu and the location grew. While still specializing in great burgers, we’ve added a Grouper Sandwich amongst an array of specialties on the menu that folks in Columbus still come here just for that, or so we’d like to think. Home to the Ohio State Alumni outings during football season, we also host Karaoke on Sundays, plus 6 or more festivals annually. We raise money for Charity, as Harold’s gives back its very best to its fans, customers & the community. One visit and you’ll understand our motto: “Dedicated to the Sheer Joy of Eating & Drinking.” One visit and you’ll become not only a fan, but a new friend as well.

The New Noodle

Yabba Island Grill’s Vegetarian Lasagna

Gluten-free, low-carb, and raw food trends have spurred the popularity of noodles made from vegetables as an alternative to pasta. Local restaurants have embraced this concept in creative ways. At The Café (thecafeon5th.com), the Paleo-Bolognese tops raw vegetable noodles made from cabbage and carrots with homemade beef Bolognese sauce, parmesan cheese, and pesto. Fresh zucchini noodles create layers in the Vegetarian Lasagna at Yabba Island Grill (yabbaislandgrill. com), along with spaghetti squash, roasted eggplant, mushrooms, arugula, homemade lemon ricotta, and vodka sauce. For the Naples area’s three Delicious Raw (delraw.com) locations that serve food, executive chef Scott Boyd mills his own dried black bean flour to puree with cooked black beans for the “spaghetti” in the Vegan Pad Thai Bowl, finished with bean sprouts, napa cabbage, peanuts, red chilies, and fresh cilantro.

The Prosecco Paradox This Italian sparkling wine is captivating taste buds worldwide—here’s why BY MARK SPIVAK

Twenty years ago, Prosecco was virtually unknown outside of northern Italy, where it was a main ingredient in the Bellinis at Harry’s Bar in Venice. By 2013, however, global sales of Prosecco eclipsed Champagne. It’s stayed on top ever since, leaving vintners in Reims and Épernay scratching their heads in confusion. There are several reasons for Prosecco’s surge in popularity. Foremost among them is price: At $10-$15 a bottle, it’s a fraction of the cost of the average nonvintage Brut Champagne, making it easier to entice consumers to try the category. Prosecco’s extra dollop of sweetness also appeals to novice wine drinkers. Most wines that become consumer sensations earn their reputations on high-quality brands and are then overproduced to the point of mediocrity. But Prosecco has reversed this pattern. Better examples are now coming onto

the market, and the cost of trading up is negligible. In some cases, it’s possible to snag Champagne quality at Prosecco prices. In the heart of the Prosecco-producing region (that stretches between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the province of Treviso) there’s no better location than the hill of Cartizze. Here, 140 growers own 260 acres of vines, planted at 1,000 feet. Land can cost more than $2 million per acre—an unheard-of price in Italy—and the wine made on this hill carries the designation of Prosecco Superiore DOCG. It’s the Montrachet of Verona. One of those landowners, Mionetto, introduced Prosecco to the states in 2000 and remains the largest exporter. The Mionetto saga began in 1887, when Francesco Mionetto established his winery in Valdobbiadene. While its product line offers something for everyone, the Cartizze DOCG Dry ($20) stands at the top

of the pyramid. It’s plump, ripe, and mediumbodied, displaying pleasant flavors of lemon, lime, melon, and vanilla that expand on the palate and linger on the finish. This classy Prosecco is nicely balanced between acidity and sweetness, making it charming to drink by itself or as an accompaniment to finger food and lighter first courses. David Noto, who gave up a career on Wall Street to make sparkling wine in northern Italy, exemplifies the new wave of Prosecco production. With 10 generations of winemaking tradition in his family, Noto couldn’t ignore the call and launched Altaneve in 2013. His vineyard sites are carefully selected, his grapes are hand-harvested, and his vinification techniques are modern and precise. Noto’s entry-level wine, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG ($32), yields flavors of stone fruits, vanilla, and citrus balanced by pleasant acidity. While dry, the palate presence is generous and the finish is long and opulent, with a core of tropical fruit

David Noto’s Altaneve

that invites you to take another sip. It’s unlike any other Prosecco on the market, and it’s nearly impossible to stop drinking it. For those who want to find out exactly how good Prosecco can be, open a bottle of Altaneve Z ($32). Dry yet luscious in the mouth, with hints of citrus, stone fruits, and minerals buoyed by good acidity, it makes an elegant

and memorable statement. The finish is long and mouthwatering, and it pairs well with fish, shellfish, poultry, and other white meats. Speaking of poultry, turkey is one of Prosecco’s most natural food matchups. The rich, off-dry texture makes it a good choice for the holidays, and a graceful addition to the Thanksgiving table. «

VOGUE INTERIORS WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG TERM SUCCESS? For me, there is one truth about interior design: A person’s home is their own. Their home’s colors, textures, furnishings, features, and finishes reflect who they are and define a style that is uniquely theirs. Achieving the homeowner’s personal vision of the spaces in which they live is the truest measure of success for a designer. At Vogue Interiors, every step of the design process is focused on understanding and executing each client’s unique vision. WHAT QUALITY SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD? In my experience, many designers love introducing new trends, and some of those trends can ultimately define a particular style. However, trends are fleeting and typically shift within a matter of months. So, while Vogue Interiors’ designers are intimately knowledgeable about the latest trends in every facet of interior design, our intention is not to create designs that are trendy. Instead, we work with our clients to create designs that are all about them. WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? I have been involved with interior design for more than three decades. My single greatest source of inspiration has always been my clients. Knowing they have put their trust in me to create the spaces where they live their lives is an honor, a privilege, and a huge responsibility. Whether a client is building a new home or remodeling, fulfilling their trust and appreciating what is important to them is what drives me every day. 24520 Production Circle, Suite 5 | Bonita Springs, FL 239.498.7500 | vogueinteriors.com

ZEHR CENTER FOR ORTHOPAEDICS WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR LONG TERM SUCCESS? The practice of orthopaedic surgery requires an intense ability to listen to what a patient believes is their problem. Successful physicians are those who listen carefully, and who have the breadth of knowledge to diagnose and treat the problem presented to them. I have over 30 years of training and practice treating a vast array of problems. I would like to believe that I was able to provide the highest level of care because I listen! WHAT QUALITY SETS YOU APART FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD? My ability to stay laser-focused on a specific surgical procedure, while treating the patient as a whole. I honed this approach during my early training and practice in the treatment of skeletal cancer problems. Because bone and muscle cancers can occur anywhere in the body, treating this type of problem requires a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and personality. Although I no longer treat oncology patients, this early training gives me a distinct advantage. WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOU TO SUCCEED? I did my early training at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where the faculty was flush with some of the greatest orthopaedic surgeons in the field, many of whom played a role in my education. One in particular was fond of telling his students “Be a good doctor! He meant put aside all the trappings of a successful medical career, and just focus on the facts and make good decisions. I strive to be a good doctor!

In Home We Trust

Including a primary residence in a living trust can be a complicated endeavor

R

By Judy Martel

evocable trusts are valuable, popular tools for those who want to streamline an estate plan. Although they’re designed to hold title to all assets, there are some serious drawbacks to titling a primary residence in the name of a trust, says Jani Maurer, professor of law at Shepard Broad College of Law at Nova Southeastern University. The main advantages of revocable trusts (also called living trusts) over wills alone include minimizing the likelihood of a court guardianship proceeding if you’re ever incapacitated, as well as generally avoiding delays and costs of probate. They can also provide more privacy because, unlike wills, trusts are typically not public record. The creator of the trust is usually the trustee who, during life, can change the terms of the trust at any time, provided he or she is mentally capable. While you can generally maintain Florida homestead benefits (such as real estate tax reductions and creditor protection) when you title your primary home in the name of a living trust, you also open your-

self to complications under Florida homestead laws, probate and real property laws, and title insurance requirements.

THE RIGHTS OF SPOUSES AND CHILDREN Married couples in particular are advised not to put their principal residence in a living trust because state homestead law protects surviving spouses and minor children. Trusts can complicate matters, explains Maurer. “While a single person who dies and is not survived by a minor child is free to gift his homestead to whomever he chooses, the same is not true for [someone] survived by a spouse or a minor child,” she says. A person who is the sole owner of his homestead and has minor children may not gift his homestead at death. Instead, if there is also a spouse, he or she is entitled to a life estate (the right to live in the home for life). Furthermore, all of the decedent’s children (both minors and adults) share the home equally after the spouse’s death. If the sole owner of a homestead dies and is survived by a minor

child and no spouse, all of the decedent’s chilWhen it comes to dren share the homestead equally under the placing a home into a living trust, it’s best to law. If the sole owner dies and is survived by a hire a professional to spouse but no minor children, he or she can gift guide the process. the homestead to the spouse. However, for the gift to be valid it must be the entire home—not a life estate or other lesser interest. “Provisions in a will or trust that violate these rules are of no effect,” Maurer says. A surviving spouse who does not want a life estate in the homestead has the right to claim one-half interest in the home instead.

HOW TO AVOID RESTRICTIONS

HOMES THAT DON’T QUALIFY FOR HOMESTEAD

In all cases, Florida law trumps any written bequests in wills or trusts. However, there are legal ways to avoid restrictions on the ability to gift a homestead solely owned by a decedent upon death. Surviving spouses can waive homestead rights with “informed consent,” Maurer says. This is typically accomplished through a written contract (two examples include prenuptial or postnuptial agreements) in which the spouse acknowledges his or her rights under Florida law and voluntarily waives them. There are other solutions available for titling a homestead residence that could accomplish your goals with minimum fuss or cost. Consult an attorney to explore the options and ensure your needs are met.

Although not advisable for primary homes, consider putting a vacation or investment home that doesn’t have homestead protection into a living trust, especially if the home is located in a state with more expensive or complicated probate procedures. But you may want to first evaluate other strategies to avoid probate or provide creditor protection, such as a limited liability company or a Florida land trust. If you’re thinking about retitling a home into a trust or any other estate-planning vehicle, hire a professional to guide you. “This is much more complicated than people think,” Maurer says. “It’s not something you should do yourself on documents downloaded from the internet.” «

BAND Together Suspension training is experiencing a renewed boost in popularity after several professional athletes, including most recently New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, revealed that a TRX (Total Resistance Exercise) training regimen has helped keep them in the game, and stronger than ever. The training tool was originally conceptualized in the late ‘90s by Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick, who was trying to come up with ways to stay strong and fit during deployment. The versatile TRX device features a series of bands, straps, and handles that leverage gravity and your body weight to perform countless exercises—everything from squats to lunges, push-ups to planks. Interested in trying it out? Locally, Addicted to Fitness (addictedtofitness.com) and Core to Core Fitness in Naples (naplescoretocore.com) offer TRX classes, and other gyms incorporate TRX devices for use in personal training and rehab from injuries. —Anna Bjorlin

Why It’s Better

Not That

GLUTEN-FREE CRACKERS

Crackers are often nutritionless vessels that are easy to overindulge in when snacking. However, a popular breed of crunchy wafers made from whole grain brown rice, quinoa, flax, and sesame seeds offers a healthier choice. Mary’s Gone Crackers ($4-$5, depending on the retailer) provide an organic and gluten-free canvas for avocado slices, and are widely available at local grocery stores and markets. Mary’s Gone Crackers (marysgonecrackers.com)

PLAIN CRACKERS

WILD-CAUGHT TUNA

TUNA IN OIL While oil helps keep tuna moist, it also leaches omega-3 fatty acids. Choose high-quality tuna like Tonnino Tuna fillets in spring water ($8), which are wild-caught and hand-jarred. The company also allows you to trace the origin of its tuna with a traceability code posted on the bottom of every jar. Tonnino Tuna (tonnino.com)

SALSA VERDE

DRIED MULBERRIES

LOCAL HONEY

BEAN OR LENTIL PASTA

Toss packaged dips in favor of fresh ingredients. But if you’re in a time crunch, salsa verde is a smart premade option. Trader Joe’s Salsa Verde ($2) has no preservatives or thickening agents, and contains fresh tomatillos—a good source of vitamin C. Trader Joe’s, Naples (239-596-5631, traderjoes.com)

While many dried fruits contain added sugar, dried mulberries are naturally sweet and full of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C. Sprinkle them on salads, yogurt, or in smoothies for added flavor and texture. Find Tarla Ecofarm's organic dried mulberries ($3) at Wynn’s Market. (239-261-7157, wynnsonline.com)

Remember the agave craze? Don’t be duped again—stick with raw local honey. Filled with pollen that provides seasonal allergy support and antioxidants, it’s the only sweetener with added health benefits. The local honey from Walker Farms in north Fort Myers ($5-$50) is available at Oakes Farms Market in Naples. (239-7320144, oakesfarm.com)

Compared to white-flour and even whole wheat–flour pastas, the new wave of bean- and lentil-based noodles packs more fiber and protein as well as fewer carbs. The gluten-free organic black bean rotini ($3) from Trader Joe’s looks like squid ink pasta and boasts a whopping 15 grams of fiber. Trader Joe’s, Naples (239-596-5631, traderjoes.com)

Unparalleled, Customized Laser Cataract Surgery {BEAUTY HACKS}

ROOT OF THE MATTER During the rush of the social season, there isn’t always time to spend an hour or more at the salon for a simple root touch-up. Whatever your reason for putting off your next visit, here are a couple of beauty hacks to get you covered in 10 minutes or less. Madison Reeds’ Root Reboot ($25) delivers a two-week extension on your next salon appointment by covering roots in 10 minutes—with no foul odor, no ammonia, and no parabens. It gradually washes out and won’t interfere with your underlying color, so you can head back to your favorite stylist (when you have a moment to catch your breath) with no repercussions. For those with really stubborn grays, leave it on an extra 10 minutes and you’re done. For a full-on hair emergency with just seconds to spare, brush on Madison Reeds’ Root Touch Up ($30) powder for a fast fix in eight shades to match every hair color. Formulated without parabens found in other popular powders, it offers root coverage that extends until your next shampoo. The powder is available locally at Ulta Beauty and Sephora stores or online. Celebrating our 55th Season in Naples

Harmon-Meek Gallery has proudly served the Naples community since our first season which began in January 1964. A family-owned gallery, with two locations in Naples, directly representing 40 American artists and artist estates, each of which meet a strict criterion of having works in the permanent collections of art museums. Kristine Meek (left), director of Harmon-Meek Gallery, displays solo exhibitions that change every two weeks. Juliana Meek (center) director of Harmon-Meek|modern, exhibits group shows that change monthly during season.

Agenda Personal Portraits After visiting an orphanage in Belarus more than a decade ago, American painter Nick Kosciuk was struck by the abandoned children living there, quickly becoming an advocate for them through his oil paintings that capture their beauty and vulnerability. Since then, Kosciuk has taken numerous trips back to Belarus, bringing donations from his art sales to the orphanages and returning to the United States with stories of the children and hundreds of photographs he uses as reference material for his works. You can view his latest paintings at East West Fine Art’s exhibit, “A Butterfly Has Three Lives—Portraits of Children by Nick Kosciuk,” from November 16 to December 7. The painter will make an appearance at the gallery’s opening reception on Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m., to talk about his interactions with the children and their influence on his work. Agenda Night Moves

FRESH FLAVORS Although previously held in May, Taste of Collier, a 34-year-old Naples tradition that includes sampling dishes from a variety of local restaurants, will take place this year on November 19 at Bayfront Naples. “We changed the date mostly for the restaurants, to give them a break at the end of summer while kick-starting the beginning of season,” says Nicholas Jankowski, director of events. This year will also feature new vendors, such as Deep Lagoon Seafood and Texas Tony’s Rib & Brewhouse, along with old favorites like Royal Scoop ice cream. The nonprofit event not only celebrates local restaurants, but also raises funds for Paradise Coast charities and culinary programs, including The American Culinary Federation and Pro Start Programs. Tickets cost $5 per person, with free admission for children 10 years old and younger. (tasteofcollier. com) —Kaylee Livingstone

Sense of Place 1

Eleanor Chabraja

1. Great escape: It is a toss-up between Italy and Greece. In Italy, the Amalfi coast is breathtaking; I love spending time in Ravello and Positano. The art in Florence is a feast for the eyes, and the food in Italy is incredible, no matter where you are. In Athens, dining on the rooftop of the Grande Bretagne Hotel Best advice she and seeing the Acropolis lit at night is magical. received: Be mindful 2. Revered contemporary artist: Caio Fonseca. He is American and thankful for all the born with a classical music background that is reflected in his blessings in your life. abstract paintings. 3. Favorite jewelry designer: Elizabeth Locke, Verdura, Van Cleef and Arpels, and Roberto Coin are the ones I seem to go to. I like pieces that are classic but with an edge. 4. Best read: Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy: Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, and Edge of Eternity. I love historical fiction, and this sweeping saga of the twentieth century is spellbinding. 5. Beauty product she can’t live without: Chanel eyeliner. 6. Go-to hostess gift: I usually make a trip to Gattle’s, where I buy beautiful scented soaps. 7. Favorite nonprofit: Naples Botanical Garden. Harvey Kapnick, who donated the land for the Garden, was a very dear friend of ours. He would be so proud of what it has become. 8. What few people know about her: I am a kitchen-gadget junkie. No matter how many cabinets I have in my kitchen, I manage to fill them. I also have five coffee brewing systems: Moccamaster, Keurig, Nespresso, French press, and the coffee cone. Collecting cookbooks is another one of my obsessions; I have shelves and shelves of them. 9. Sweet craving: The stracciatella or pistachio gelato at Barbatella.

Though she spends summers in Lake Forest, Illinois, and Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, she maintains a strong commitment to Naples. The Naples Botanical Garden’s visitor center was named after Chabraja and her husband, after the couple made a $5 million donation to the nonprofit. She also serves as chair of this year’s Hats in the Garden on November 8.
