elcome to a new season of both celebration and thanks! The COVID-19 pandemic cut short our last season and certainly restricted our Club activities. The support of Club members enabled us to open gradually with all safety precautions in place. Because our operations were significantly better than our budget, we were able to compensate our staff during this difficult period. Our board and management want to stress that they have made Naples Yacht Club the safest location to dine in Naples. This issue of Waypoints contains the schedules for the 2021 season. You will find the complete cruise, entertainment and event, Speaker Dinner Series, and Ladies Book Club schedules. If the COVID-19 virus is not contained by the time we resume activities in the fall, we will have contingency plans in place if we cannot gather as usual. We have been—and will continue—pre-recording the Ladies Book Club presentations and Speaker Series lectures for members who are apprehensive about gathering at the Club. Your activities committees have an exciting year planned, so mark your calendar now and make reservations early so that you don’t miss anything. This fall, the board will be asking you to participate in a brief survey (as we did in the summer) related to our pandemic-restricted activities. We need to know what has gone right and what you think could be improved. There were many difficult decisions that had to be made. Restricting

guests and reciprocal activities were among the most controversial. This made recruiting new members exceedingly difficult because the potential new members could not come to Naples Yacht Club to enjoy our activities and camaraderie. The board felt that it was wiser to provide a safe environment for our members rather than trying to increase our revenue. The board is committed to continuous improvement, so your feedback will help us navigate change. Please participate! On behalf of our board and staff, I would like to thank each of you for supporting your Club during this difficult time. Chef Michael Katz has created a Harbor Provisions Menu that has been very well received, and since reopening, our members have been coming to the Club to be together safely and to enjoy our fine cuisine and ambiance. Our waitstaff, donning masks and gloves, has been genuinely pleased to see members’ familiar faces. Our membership is not as large as some of our competition, but we are fortunate that our members show a strong loyalty to Naples Yacht Club—so thank you. Remember, this is your Club, so come frequently and enjoy it!

Light banter between Brenda O’Connor and Mike Mooney

Brenda: Mike, as Ronald Reagan once famously said, “Well, there he goes again…” I am thinking that, what seems to be the umpteenth year in a row, we have something that is an obstacle to us just having a good time! First, we had Hurricane Irma. Then, we had to deal with construction for two years. And then, of course, we’ve had to adjust to the novel coronavirus. Mike: I had almost forgotten Hurricane Irma. And last year, until mid-March, was such a blast that I had almost forgotten about the construction situation. Makes you want to say, “Enough, already.” Brenda: I was thrilled when we finally had a safe opening in May and got to spotlight the cuisine from our new executive chef, Michael Katz. Before we could open, he had stepped up and recorded some cooking videos that inspired us and made us anticipate the possibilities once we could open. Mike: Yes, that was great. And Sally worked with the Ladies Book Club to film and produce the last two book discussions and posted

004_YC_Manager Message_20.indd 5

them on our website and YouTube channel so our members could view the presentations at their leisure and have fun. The May book club meeting was safely hosted in-person in our ballroom and featured, once again, cuisine ideas from the book. The ladies had a great time! Brenda: At that luncheon, we really impressed them with our white-glove, er, blue-glove and mask service. Mike: Well, you know, we were sending a message to all members: We are the safest place in town! And, I might add, the tastiest cuisine as well. Chef Michael did a terrific job; he made what sounded like a mundane beef stew look like it came from a Michelin 3–star restaurant. Brenda: Come on, it was just stew! Well, it did look like tenderloin to me, now that you mention it… Mike: Darned right it was, and the sauce was yummy! And don’t forget dessert. The apple cake was terrific. I saw a lot of empty plates

coming back to the kitchen. And nobody left right away. The ladies stayed and socialized, even if the tables were separated by the mandatory six-foot rule. Brenda: You know, that’s what we are really about: Good cuisine, safely and pleasantly served in our comfortable environment, with great camaraderie that makes you realize what a special place NYC truly is. Mike: You got that right! And, to borrow from the Marines: We adapted, we improvised, and we overcame. I am really looking forward to this season. We may have some limitations like we have in past years, but we will continue to adapt to whatever challenges come our way to provide our members with premier experiences. After all, we are Naples Yacht Club, where we “honor traditions, and commit to excellence.” Brenda O’Connor Executive Director, Membership Mike Mooney, CCM, CCE General Manager

Anchored by Tradition Naples Yacht Club is a welcoming home away from home. What makes it so special?

F

rom memorable on-the-water excursions to friendly terra firma gatherings, Naples Yacht Club members revel in the Club’s vibrant ambience, honored traditions, special events, and social clubs that offer something for everyone—boaters and non-boaters alike. What do members celebrate about NYC? For starters, its world-class clubhouse, gourmet dining, affable staff, boating amenities, and prized proximity to beaches and shopping. When asked what really sets NYC apart, members consistently return to the same reason—the people. “We belong to many clubs in many places in the country, and there’s nothing that has a special feel like Naples Yacht Club,” says Lindsey Thomas, who served as Commodore in 2011. “When new people join, it’s amazing how quickly they become involved. Almost everyone volunteers for a committee or offers to help, and they’re all tied around a common theme of good cheer and brotherhood. It turns out to be a wonderful environment.” The Club’s selective vetting process ensures a membership accomplished in business, community, voluntarism, and philanthropy—attributes that nourish a culture of engagement. “We’ve enjoyed our time at the yacht club in so many ways that it’s hard to describe all of them,” says Charlie Brown, who has lived in Naples with his wife, Elise, since 1985. The Browns finally joined the Club about eight years ago because they could no longer justify not jumping into the action. “We had a boat behind our house. We didn’t need to join,” he

6

says. “We just loved the parties and the people we met there.”

A Magic Combination

Whether they’re discussing kingfish, KingFishers, or knitted tiles, members are drawn to the Club’s common conviviality found at the dock, in the Main Brace, and at “clubs within the Club” that indulge a wide range of interests: vintage cars, bridge, bocce, books, and mahjong. David Lawson says the Club atmosphere deftly weaves a sophisticated, knowledgeable boating tradition with festive, inviting social activities. “The essence of what makes the place different from other yacht or social clubs is the way it combines those two things,” says Lawson, a North Carolina native who has lived all over the world and joined NYC with his wife, Emiliana, about three years ago. “It makes it quite appealing to both sets of people,

and you end up with this organic overlap. I belong to a range of clubs, but this one I feel most connected to.” Club staff rolls out the red carpet in making each member feel special and in planning events that honor the Club’s traditions and special place in Naples’ history as the first private club— established before the city became incorporated. “Every big tree in the forest has great roots,” Brown notes. “And our Club has great roots.” In January, when Charlie and Elise Brown celebrated their 80th birthdays, the staff, in typical fashion, threw a grand party at the Club. “It was quite a show,” says Brown. The Club’s Annual Fleet Review & Commissioning Ceremony is a long-standing yacht club tradition, but Thomas says, “I’ve never been to a club that did it quite to the nines as we do,” he says. Its walkable proximity to downtown Naples and the beach—and its picaresque

location on Naples Bay—make the Club a rare find, Lawson says. Despite its enviable amenities, the Club is embraced as a casual, down-to-earth second home. “I think it is just very welcoming,” says Toni Mueller. Shortly after Mueller and her husband, Charlie, joined in 2017, she got involved with the Women on Water Committee and book and mahjong clubs. “We’ve had so many fun activities the past couple years,” she says. “It’s been really great.” When it’s time to make Club changes or upgrades, they are driven by members. “We want to know what they want, what they like,” says Melanie Sabelhaus, who serves on the House Committee. “We feel like family. It’s like walking into your living room or dining room when you walk into Naples Yacht Club. It’s fabulous.”

Cruising Camaraderie

Drawn to cruising companionship, Sabelhaus joined NYC with her husband, Bob, in 2004 after Hurricane Charley wiped out

006_YC_Member Services_20.indd 7

their Useppa Island home. The Club’s extensive cruising program—which includes lunch, overnight, and even international trips—is key to fostering a communal culture. “The cruises are the highlights because of the friendships, the camaraderie, and the water experiences,” she says. “You’ll have all kinds of different boats, all kinds of different people, joining the cruises. That was the way we met most of our friends, who are now our very good friends.” For boaters, nautical knowledge and yarns

are exchanged at the weekly Boaters’ Lunch and along the dock, where members offer a hand to tie up or cautionary tale. On the water, “something is always going wrong, and you end up with a great story as a result,” Lawson laughs. “There’s a great camaraderie amongst the group. It’s a very collaborative culture.” 

MEMBER SERVICES

Stay Local, Go Global with Reciprocity Naples Yacht Club is one of the 13 charter members of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. As a result, members can visit other member clubs, have a berth for their boat with the first night’s dockage free, and bill charges for all activities through their own club. Being a member of a club of our status provides the opportunity to spend a little time enjoying the amenities and dining at other renowned properties. In the summer, NYC typically enjoys reciprocity with several prestigious, regional clubs. Each spring, we provide a list of clubs where you can enjoy dining, golf, and other amenities. Reciprocity privileges can take you even farther. The council has sponsored cruises to the Dry Tortugas, Bahamas, and Everglades. Professionally organized tours to Monte Carlo, Greece, Denmark, Germany, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and the St. Lawrence Seaway have taken yachters across the globe. If you are traveling outside of Florida and wish to visit a yacht club in your destination city, please contact NYC’s reservationist. We have reciprocity with many clubs around the country and around the world. We

will be happy to contact clubs and make arrangements for your visit whenever possible. Typically, home club members have priority for reservations, as is the case at NYC; however, in most instances, we are able to make your preferred arrangements for your visit. Reciprocity works both ways, so we often welcome members of visiting clubs. Please take a moment to say hello when you see a new face in our clubhouse!

Founded in 1947, Naples Yacht Club has the proud distinction of being the city’s first and oldest private club. The Club was founded by three yachtsmen and today boasts a membership of 550. The clubhouse location on Naples Bay was preferred by members who agreed it provided decent protection from hurricanes. The property was donated

The clubhouse has undergone several renovations through the decades. The third phase of a long-running masterplan, a $10 million renovation, was unveiled in 2019. The first Commodores’ Ball was held in 1961. Our Blue Gavel Scholarship Fund for local, deserving students to attend college or vocational school has granted more than 550 scholarships totaling $600,000.

Weathering the Storm Naples Yacht Club staff has rallied to fulfill members’ needs since the pandemic’s onset

N

aples Yacht Club was at the height of a rollicking season—kicked off by the Welcome Back Gala celebrating the grand clubhouse renovations—when the coronavirus pandemic slammed the brakes on the remainder of the year’s social activities. By early April, NYC quickly pivoted operations and strategized ways to provide extra TLC for members. “We have to give members the Club on their terms. We had the realization that members really are depending on us to keep their space open for them,” says general manager Mike Mooney. These are a few of the ways staff rose to the challenge:

comprehensive missive. “Our members told us they liked how concise we were and what we were telling them,” he says.

A Special Touch: Handwritten Notes

Each of the Club’s 550 members received a personalized, handwritten note in the pandemic’s early days. The effort was launched by Brenda O’Connor, executive director of membership, who divvied up members among staff. “Note-writing is kind of a lost art,” says Mooney. “I had so many people comment that they really appreciated getting a note from the Club. It made me realize that you can send emails all you want but taking time to write notes is really meaningful.”

Meet You at the Dock

As New England states began grappling with high infection rates, many seasonal Naples residents decided to stay put. Many NYC members continued to seek freedom on the water, so NYC’s marina stayed open to provide fuel and docking assistance. The hours of

operation were shortened to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with only one staff member on duty to reduce potential contacts. NYC also discontinued reciprocal boater visits until early June “so it was only our members in the harbor,” says Mooney. “When the rest of the Club was shut down, and some other private marinas were closed, our harbor was still open. We wanted to keep some level of service for members who wanted to get on the water. There were a lot of them—and they appreciated it.”

Conscious Communication

While some clubs sent daily emails with ever-shifting updates, the NYC team decided not to bombard members with “white noise,” says Mooney, so the team sent out one weekly,

it together couldn’t be thwarted. The birthday boys and their wives, Jane Francoeur, Ginger Cornog, Diana Wingard, and Marie Wilson, met with a couple of other friends in the north NYC parking lot for a brief, outdoor COVIDstyle party, featuring bouquets of balloons festooning their convertibles. The parking-lot party culminated with a parade through Port Royal and old Naples, with the car caravan being led by Wingard, whose name was drawn out of a hat to do the honors.

14

For the Speaker Dinner Series, U.S. Senator Rick Scott from Florida graciously agreed to give his talk virtually at the last minute for 120 member households that tuned in. Along with Scott, former Collier County Emergency Medical Services Director Dr. Robert Tober agreed to join the event to answer members’ ques-

tions about the medical aspects of the novel coronavirus. “It turned out to be incredibly popular,” Mooney notes. Scott called O’Connor later that evening to say he was impressed with the Club’s quick, flexible response, and that he enjoyed the format. Both Mooney and O’Connor say virtual events are certain to be incorporated into future series. For the Ladies Book Club virtual meeting in April, executive chef Michael Katz prepared three Cuban dishes from the famed Columbia Restaurant—Spanish bean and chorizo soup, the 1905 Salad, and fried plantains—in a pre-recorded video to complement the selected novel, Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton. NYC also arranged for Ladies Book Club Committee hostess Carol Girardin to prerecord her presentation about the book, which included a lively introduction, historic photos, authentic Cuban music, a member’s personal connection to the Cuban Revolution, and de rigueur questions to prod fellow readers.

Satisfying Harbor Provisions

If you haven’t tried an hors d’oeuvre tray from the Harbor Provision Menu for entertaining on your yacht or at home, check out what you are missing. To meet members’ needs, trays laden with cheese and crackers, shrimp, or veggies can be customized for preference and size. Executive chef Michael Katz arrived in April and brought his knowledge and experience of best practices for running a sanitized dining room. With confidence, NYC began offering Harbor Provisions Menu pick-up meals for members before reopening the dining facilities. To accommodate more member requests, Harbor Provisions Menu expanded to include basic groceries, household items such as dish

detergent, bundles of citrus, paper towels, and ever-elusive toilet paper. For members whose visiting families were unable to return to their northern homes, the Club provided provisions such as a gallon of milk and batches of hot meals to feed grandparents and grandchildren alike. When one member prepared to head back to Maine and mentioned there was a daunting shortage of toilet paper there, the crew at NYC loaded a supply of this prized booty on his boat.

Looking Ahead

“We give members what they need; we just had to figure out how to do it,” says Mooney. In June, NYC sent out a survey to gauge how members feel about using the Club this year and to provide ideas and suggestions for moving forward operationally. As always, Mooney, O’Connor, and the rest of the crew will continue to pivot as conditions dictate. “I believe that we did a good job of trying to make connections with our members during that most difficult period—I wish we could have done better, really,” Mooney says. But then, O’Connor nudges him with, “We were better than good.” After reconsidering, he agrees. “We were better than good. We were proactive. We learned a lot. A lot of things that we did out of necessity will become part of the fabric of our social activity and programming.” 

On the menu: fresh Florida fare, updated classics, and rich, unexpected flavors prepared the Chef’s Way

W

ithin two days of donning his toque blanche at Naples Yacht Club, Michael Katz embraced one of his first tasks as executive chef. The Ladies Book Club was planning a last-minute virtual discussion and he graciously agreed to video his preparation of three Columbia Restaurant dishes complementing the book Next Year in Havana. It is this kind of intimate involvement— preparing exquisite food and engaging directly with members—that he loves most as a chef. Katz, who appreciates NYC’s unrivaled prestige and waterfront location, says he felt “an instant connection” when he met with NYC leadership. “The Club has a philosophy that if we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it right,” he says. “It was just a perfect match for me, and it’s been a pleasure every single day to step through the door.” Katz is a New York native whose first career stint in Southwest Florida spanned more than a decade. He returned to the area in 2018 after eight years as an instructor for the esteemed Culinary Institute of America (CIA). As part of the interview process, Katz reviewed the menu with a singular mission: to shine the light on Florida cuisine, while emphasizing local and sustainable ingredients. “The conversation we had was, ‘Honor the classics; take us into the future,’” he says. Expertise in regional classics and innovative approaches has become second nature for Katz through his extensive culinary experience. A graduate of the CIA in Hyde Park, New York, and an American Culinary Federation– certified executive chef, the classically trained Katz is a farm-to-table and ocean-to-table specialist with advanced expertise in butchery and farming. He has studied international cuisine under world-class chefs. “I got to see trends before they were trends, because we created a lot of them,” he says of his time at the CIA. Katz also plans to use his wealth of connections to hire the best for NYC. “I helped graduate thousands of students; they’re all over the planet.”

016_Chef Michael Katz_NY_20.indd 17

Most recently at Quail West, Katz has held numerous Southwest Florida positions including executive chef and food and beverage director at Gasparilla Inn & Club in Boca Grande and executive chef at Lely Resort and The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. He went on to teach at the CIA’s campuses in San Antonio, Texas; Hyde Park; Napa, California; and Singapore. Katz left Southwest Florida in 2010 for the CIA instructorship with the desire to push his knowledge beyond his extensive skills. “When I graduated from the CIA in 1993, I said to friends, ‘I wish I could go do that whole thing again.’ And I was blessed to do it like 30 more times when I taught for the school,” he says. “Every chef thinks they know a great amount—

and that includes me—but there was just so much more to learn. I got to work with more master chefs at the CIA than one could ever hope for in their entire career.” At NYC, Katz has made some menu adjustments and crafted several unique dining experiences. Mostly, he has favored skillful

enhancements. For the traditional “local catch” one evening, Katz took a basic grouper dish that typically comes with rice and vegetables and paired it with a spinach pesto risotto, scallops, and a passionfruit butter sauce. Along with traditional lamb chops, Katz has added a Chef ’s Way version, pan-seared with a sauce of rosemary, Parmesan cheese, garlic, and lamb stock built in the pan. Katz proudly credits the dish to one of his beloved mentors, chef Joseph DiPerri, one of his CIA instructors who later became a cross-training peer in Hyde Park. “It’s a fun talking point at the table,” he says of the menu item. Sharing nuanced delights—in the front and back of the house—is part of what Katz loves about NYC. His changed-up Chef ’s Way approach will keep diners returning for new twists on favorite classics. “I cook on the line. I’m actually preparing food. I enjoy that process,” he says. “As soon as I’m finished, I take my apron off and go out into the dining room, and I try to visit every single table. At this stage in my life, I’m confident enough to be able to enjoy feedback from the membership. That helps me grow. It helps me refine the menu.” 

NYC Wine Society The mission of the Naples Yacht Club Wine Society is to promote the discovery and enjoyment of wine, food, and the art of the table through education, fellowship, and tasting experiences catered to members’ level of wine expertise. The Wine Society is designed to be a friendly and unassuming experience that’s fluid in nature to ensure that it continually evolves as the NYC has since 1947. It also is intended to be a value-added bonus to our membership when dining at the Club. Our wine list represents our dedication to delivering a diverse, easily navigable, and value-driven wine selection. Our pricing structure is a one-time markup, which makes ours one of the most reasonably and competitively priced lists in the area. Any bottle in the $100-plus range is marked up at an even lower percentage. This makes some of our higher-end wines a phenomenal value. In most cases, we are well below the Naples market and other membership clubs. Members can rent personal wine vaults to store wines purchased from the Club. (There is currently a waitlist for vaults, but we encourage you to add your name to it.) Our conditioned storage accommodates approximately 1,500 bottles, in addition to bulk and house wines. Car Club

Revvin’ it up In 2018, a small group of members with an interest in cars thought it would be fun to arrange activities to bring together members with similar interests. It led to visits to local car collections, driving trips to points of interest and car events, discussion meetings, and, of course, our very own car show at the Club. Our first car show was a big hit and even more successful in 2019. Both years, members

Stay in the Know There are many ways to get the latest information on clubs and events:

The Rudder Weekly email blasts Online calendar: naplesyc.com had an enjoyable time mingling among the cars lined up in our parking lot and were treated to a sumptuous alfresco lunch. The 2020 car show was cancelled due to the pandemic, but it won’t slam the brakes on the event this year. We plan to have another car show at the Club in March. Our members have plenty of sweet collector cars to exhibit, many that have not yet been featured at our Car Club show. We are also planning a number of activities: trips to car shows, Sebring International Raceway, Grand Concours at Amelia Island, and visits to local collections.

The Car Club is a very informal group that is open to all members. You need not be a collector to participate. All you need is an interest in things automotive and a desire to meet with fellow members. If you are interested, call the Club for more information and be on the lookout for future announcements.

Throughout the season, the group hosts fun activities, such as guided fishing trips, kayaking adventures, and educational workshops for women of the Club and their guests through this informal group. Most activities typically take place in the morning and are followed by lunch at the Club or a nearby restaurant, where participants often share photos and sightings from the trip.

Fishing

Bocce

A timeless tradition Bocce is more popular than ever in Southwest Florida, with many clubs and communities offering league and social play. The beauty of bocce is that anyone can play, no matter their athletic skill level, gender, or age. Bocce is a great way to socialize and to meet Club members. Games can be played as singles or in couples. One reason this ancient game of skill and strategy has been passed down through the ages is due to its simplicity. All you need is a bocce ball and court to play on, along with something to sip and nibble. We hope to have our opening event before Thanksgiving to discuss the games for the upcoming season and play a little bocce. Bocce is not just a great game to play with friends, it is a tradition—one that will likely continue to thrive at Naples Yacht Club.

30

Drop a line The Club’s fishing enthusiasts will find several opportunities throughout the season to take guided fishing trips with fellow members. Past destinations have been as close as Pine Island Sound and as far as Ninilchik, Alaska.

The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz By Erik Larson In the winter of 1940, as Germany’s brutal bombing campaign against Britain dragged on, Joseph Goebbels poured out his frustrations in his diary. “When will that creature Churchill finally surrender?” he complained. “England cannot hold out forever!” The Splendid and the Vile is the story of Winston Churchill’s first year as prime minister. Through the skillful use of intimate diaries and public documents—some newly released—Larson provides a fresh, fast, and deeply moving account of the turbulent 12 months of the German Blitz, stretching from May 1940 through May 1941.

CRUISING

The cruising season was cut short, but still provided memorable adventures

Departures

’T

ween Waters: The quaint island of Captiva was host to a dozen of our members in October for the annual cruise to ’Tween Waters Island Resort. This cruise, which commonly serves as a preamble to the busy NYC cruise season, entails all of the traditional cruise activities on a smaller scale: a docktail party, bocce tournament, dinner with music from the Hatboys, and dancing into the night. Boca Grande: The Boca Grande cruise was packed with activity and fun. Members enjoyed a docktail party on the first night as the sun dipped below the horizon. Then they set out in golf carts to explore the island’s dining scene. The next morning, members enjoyed a chilly and early start to their day with a rousing game of bocce. After lunch in town, they were off to the races to see who could complete the Boca Grande scavenger hunt first. Dinner at the Eagle Grille, followed by a gentle lullaby rocking from side-to-side waves, wrapped up the cruise. Legacy Harbour: On a short journey north to downtown Fort Myers, NYC members set sail for an educational visit. Some cruisers chose to partake in a private tour of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates or the River District walking tour, where they gained a deeper understanding of the rich history that Fort Myers holds. An evening of conversation and laughter ensued under the starlight at the Veranda Restaurant. South Seas: With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love was in the air, especially the love for boating. Even before docktails began, NYC members were already gearing up their competitive spirit with a contest on the putting greens. The competition continued the next day with a traditional game of bocce. Mimosas and bloody Marys fueled the athletes as they rolled their way to victory. A delightful dinner at the Captiva Island Yacht Club wrapped up the South Seas cruise and unknowingly became the final dinner of the 2019-2020 cruising season. All participants ended the night in good spirits and plan to pick up where the good times left off this fall.

Sea Treks Being on the water is a multisensory experience that brings boaters and sailors to new levels of awareness and appreciation

T

hese days, life on land can sometimes feel boxed-in, limited by the same routines. Ancient seafarers discovered that heading out to sea meant adventure, challenge, and often, reward—and it’s been a crucial facet of the human experience ever since. Here, Naples Yacht Club members reflect on some of the joys and lessons they discover on the water.

Adventure Awaits

Amy and I spend the majority of our free time on the water in our mid-sized, Downeast-style motor vessel. Boating is a hobby we can share, and it brings us closer together. We find our time on the water to be relaxing, restorative for our spirit, and a welcome diversion from the stresses of everyday life. We love to frequently entertain our family and friends with casual harbor and coastal cruises. The soothing sounds of the boat moving through the water, the caress of an ocean breeze, and the glow of a low-hanging sun on the horizon all create a wonderful environment for a memorable social gathering. We also cherish our time alone on the

boat, in particular our weekend cruises and overnights when we can enjoy the journey and the destination. These excursions capture our gypsy spirit and give us an incredible sense of freedom and adventure. On these longer trips, we feel more connected with the sea and have developed a healthy respect for its power and ever-changing conditions. The sobering challenge of navigating fog and darkness by instrumentation brings us as much exhilaration as the uplifting sight of a dolphin pod surfing the boat’s wake on a bluebird day. The ultimate joy after a long day of cruising is reaching our final destination and the sense of accomplishment it brings. The marinas we travel to are always welcoming, filled with a quiet energy, and populated with fascinating people from all walks of life. Among the pageantry of sailing and motor vessels at dock, we’ve found that our fellow weekend cruisers and live-aboards are a fun and social group to be around. Enjoying a refreshing sundowner with newly minted friends and sharing stories of our respective journeys is a marvelous way to end a day on the seas and expand our horizons. — Bill and Amy Kremer

Family Memories

Boating has been an important part of our lives for the 47 years that we have been married. It has been a fun form of family time, relaxation, and adventure, all rolled up together. All three of our children got the boating bug. Our youngest daughter was strapped into a car seat in the cockpit of a Sabre 42 sailboat; our son crewed with me on the shakedown cruise of our Eastbay 49 from Fort Lauderdale to Westport, Connecticut; and our oldest daughter became a sailing instructor during summers in college. Pat and I are anxious to continue the adventure, exploring coastal Florida, the Keys, and the islands, with our new friends at NYC. Hopefully, our children and grandchildren will be signing up for some of the fun, too! — Dick and Pat Del Bello

Boating is an expensive commitment to an experience based on safety, technology, the environment, and social fun. Every boating trip provides a diverse multisensory and intellectual experience. I am a U.S.C.G. licensed captain who really enjoys the activities which define the boating experience: trip planning, pre-trip boat checklist, on-board passenger hospitality, constant review of alternative courses of action in the event of uncertain conditions, challenges of weather and tides, and monitoring the boat equipment and engine and other boats on the water. The sense of freedom and accountability makes each trip unique. — Rusty McKee

Unforgettable Journeys

When we are docked at various marinas, people ask all sorts of questions about our boat—the size and make, how fast it goes, how many it sleeps, how we got the boat from Florida to Michigan. It’s all about the physical attributes of the boat. What they don’t ask about is what makes the boating all worth it—all the other elements that create the journey. Most important of these are the friendships we have made with other Naples Yacht Club boaters, and the camaraderie we share with family and guests who travel with us. This time spent together, the sights we take in when cruising, and the excitement of never knowing what the next turn of events might be due to weather, obstacles, and changing seas, make it an unforgettable experience. The independence and calmness I feel when I’m out on the open seas is unmatched by any other type of transport. Naples Yacht Club has been a big conduit and contributor to all the positive aspects of boating for us. — Jack and Ann Anderson

Schooled by the Seas Six life lessons sailing taught me By Jane Devine

“Sight-seaing” with Sophie

We traveled on our Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht from June 21 to October 15 in 2019, all the way to Bar Harbor, Maine, and back to Naples. Yes, that is almost four months on the water! This was our first time experiencing a trip like this: just the two of us and our standard poodle, Sophie. We loved experiencing each coastal town, big and small, along our journey. Each had something different to offer that we enjoyed. We experienced fabulous museums, our country’s rich history (especially naval history), and amazing restaurants. Our family flew into different cities and spent some weekends with us, so we didn’t feel like we missed out spending time with them. We love the freedom of traveling by boat: sleeping in our own bed each night, not having to eat out three times a day, and being able to bring Sophie. We love the camaraderie of other boaters, each with their own explorer’s spirit. Spending time on the water is precious to us. — John and Carolyn Moisson

The lessons one learns about and from boating—whether sailing or power—will forever stick with you, enriching the rest of your life, and contributing to your personal and professional growth. Each lesson you learn is imprinted on your brain, as tools to apply to your business, relationships, family life, and individual goals. Some important sea-inspired truths worth sharing:  Boating teaches you how to steer. This leadership skill can enable you to run a business and be directly in control of your enterprise and the direction you wish to take.  It’s essential to be part of a crew. Every well-skippered boat (family, business, or group of friends) typically has a well-oiled team that assists in making snap decisions and works in tandem to navigate difficult waters.  There are captains for a reason. Mentorship is valuable and it’s impossible to learn how to sail by yourself.  Follow the leader, to a point. You can follow other boats for the safest solution, but breaking away and carving your own line can produce the win and the best winds. Good equipment helpswhen you know what you’re doing. Fancy equipment in the hands of a less-skilled or inexperienced sailor will never compare to having a maestro at the helm to take a boat to its best performance.

Sailing can be the most exhilarating, satisfying, and happiest times you can spend with family, friends, business associates, and competitors.

Nirvana is an apt name for our vessel. Come aboard!

An Epic Challenge NYC member John “Hap” Fauth is a gale force behind American Magic, the United States’ only team of America’s Cup contenders

J

ohn “Hap” Fauth is a familiar face around NYC—and in the international yacht-racing community. As CEO of the United States’ 2021 America’s Cup challenger syndicate, American Magic, Fauth has been laser-focused on bringing the Cup back to the States while upping the ante on sailing yacht innovation and design. With four years between each America’s Cup challenge, Fauth has been absorbed with fundraising for the multi-million-dollar endeavor, the design of the team’s foiling monohull design called the AC75, and the cliffhanging competition at multiple tiers that boils down to mere seconds. “You can race the same course on the same day, and the wind and currents will be different. We win races by five seconds—by half a boat length,” he says. “It’s competitive as hell.” It’s called the “challenger syndicate” because “there’s always been a group of gentle-

men who have put a team together to race in the AC. All the way back, J.P. Morgan was the helmsman,” he explains of the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport, dating to 1851. “As it’s gone along, it’s become a younger man’s game.” The equipment for the younger crew manning the fast, highly responsive AC75: Kevlar suits and custom life vests, helmets, and bulletproof goggles for taking on 50-plus-knot speeds. The current Cup holder, called “the Defender,” is Emirates Team New Zealand from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Challengers in the America’s Cup World Series who have made their way to this level of battle need to win 11 races in the Prada Cup Challenger finals. The winner will go head-to-head with New Zealand in the 36th America’s Cup, based in Auckland, N.Z. and scheduled for March 6 through March 21. Syndicates represent clubs, not boat owners or captains. American Magic is

representing the New York Yacht Club, where Fauth is a longtime member and trustee. The venerable yacht club “held the Cup for 132 years. It’s part of the club’s DNA, so we want to bring it back and start the legacy again,” Fauth says. The other competitors are Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team and the British Ineos Team UK. (Luna Rossa is the “Challenger of Record” because it launched the first challenge to New Zealand following its 2017 victory, and it has a hand in the writing the series rules.) American Magic worked closely with dignitaries and through official channels after New Zealand closed its borders in the wake of COVID-19. It was touch-and-go until mid-

June, when team members received border exemptions from the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. American Magic personnel and their family members underwent strict entry requirements, including quarantine. Fauth, along with Doug DeVos and Roger Penske, are the principal backers of the $160 million syndicate, which includes $34 million of in-kind contributions. They have created two foiling monohull racing yachts, Defiant and Patriot, both built in Bristol, Rhode Island, to meet this year’s race regulations. Patriot was transported by air from Bristol to Auckland in late August. If all goes well for

Patriot in practices and races, the vessel will undertake the final America’s Cup challenge against New Zealand if the syndicate advances. The American Magic syndicate totals 145 paid team members, Fauth says, which includes 40 designers and 40 boatbuilders, up to 25 sailors with backups for each of the 11 onboard crewmembers, coaching staff, and ground crew. Getting to Auckland was a massive logistical operation. Thirty-seven shipping containers will serve as a mini village for a variety of purposes, such as a press room, a kitchen to feed 100 people three meals a day, and an electronic simulator for the sailors to practice. Some will house workshops for sail-making, metal machining, and carbon-fiber repairs that will be pressed into action daily. “When you’re going consistently at 40-knots-plus, stuff breaks,” Fauth says, noting the 75-foot vessel weighs 1,200 pounds, and is hoisted out of the water following each practice and race. “It’s about efficiency and durability. Hopefully, efficiency equates to speed, and durability

suggests you will stay on the racecourse and not have to drop out because of a broken item on the boat. You can’t win if you don’t finish.”

Carving a Path to the Cup American Magic needs decisive wins in key regattas to advance and face off with the kiwis. Here is the schedule:

The Prada Cup (January 15-February 22)

36th America’s Cup (March 6-21)

A Chess Match on the Water

Fauth, 72, grew up on the waters of New York’s Great South Bay between Long Island and Fire Island. He began racing at the age of 7, and his father dropped his golf game to spearhead a Blue Jays team and racing committee at Babylon Yacht Club in West Islip, N.Y. He has extensive experience in high-level races with his own custom racing sailing yachts, including his Bella Mente Maxi 72. For Fauth, sailing “has always been about interpreting the majestic nature of water. The dynamics of sailing is a three-dimensional chess game. It’s not only you and the wind, it’s you, your crew, your boats, and the tide— what’s happening on the water. It’s a geographic equation. You’re having to think and perform at three different levels, at least.” He and his wife, Geren, bought a Port Royal home on Naples Bay in 2005 and joined Naples Yacht Club in 2007. Behind their Galleon Drive home is the 30-foot Intrepid, which the family uses for sunset cruises, jaunts to Boca Grande, and fishing trips. The Fauths also have property in Rhode Island and Colorado. Fauth spends a lot time in Minneapolis, Minn., where the privately held investment firm he founded in 1982, the Churchill Companies, is headquartered. They have three grown children, who all grew up on the water, and six grandchildren.

044_YC_Americas Cup_20.indd 47

In March, Fauth, DeVos and American Magic’s skipper and executive director, Terry Hutchinson, held a fundraiser at NYC. It was attended by 80 members, who got to hear first-hand about the behind-the-scenes excitement of this international endeavor. He was happy with the feedback and the generosity. “Everyone really enjoyed it,” he says. “It was all good.” 

FAIR WINDS

Private Signals A creative, nautical tradition

The private signal is a small, customdesigned and crafted flag that represents its owner, so it incorporates whatever the owner wants to express. The creative possibilities are endless, ranging from a monogram to a family crest or business logo.

s you dine in the Boaters’ Grille, have you ever wondered about those fanciful burgees—or private signals—festooning the walls? Maybe you’ve wondered about the multitude of framed flags adorned with often-enigmatic symbols and images, such as a pizza pie, dog’s paw, or a stein of beer.

As a proud member of Naples Yacht Club, you can be a part of this tradition. If you want to create a burgee (pronounced b r-jē), NYC has a select company that will facilitate your vision. Simply identify an image, symbol, or design element that represents you. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind: e

Avoid small lettering or design elements because your burgee will typically be seen from a distance.  Choose a simple color palette. Most burgees have four colors or fewer. 

Once you have the design in mind, contact NYC, and we will provide you with the contact information for a recommended company and designer to make it happen. We have more than 85 on display, and we can make room for more, so feel free to join the tradition.
