FROM THE EDITOR
Producing lifestyle magazines during the COVID-19 pandemic has been an interesting endeavor. Since “lifestyle” looks nothing like it did pre-coronavirus, we, like all media, have had to pivot from our typical content to stories that address our new normal. Both in print and online, we’ve told you where to get the best takeout, what to cook (and sip) at home, how to stay fit during quarantine, and what your neighbors are doing to help those most affected in our community—all while continuing to inspire you to daydream about everything that awaits after we emerge from the crisis. This issue falls under that category. If this massive global disruption taught us anything, it’s that circumstances may change on a dime, but the human spirit prevails. People still fall in love, vow to be together in sickness and in health, and get excited about their new life as a couple. While weddings may be on hold (or on Zoom) for a while, lovers continue to dream of and plan their special day, now made even more meaningful by the realization that bringing together friends and family is not a given but a privilege. Our Wedding Issue celebrates the love stories of two couples, including cover subjects Alex and Roberta Benedict of Boca Raton. Alex and Roberta met at Lynn University and knew right away they would be each other’s forever. What they didn’t know was that they would have a fairy-tale wedding, with bride and mother-in-law working together to turn a floral-rich vision into reality. Their gorgeous “Fantasy Garden” at The Breakers was idyllic enough to launch 1,000 Pinterest boards. See for yourself on page 30. In addition to real weddings, we have a wonderful roundup of trending gowns (page 36), a story devoted to DIY projects for perfect nesting (page 44), and a showcase of sexy swimsuits to wear on honeymoon vacations—or staycations (page 52). As of press time, we were still in quarantine and thinking of creative ways to help our readers get through this crisis. If you’d like to see what we’ve been up to, check out palmbeach illustrated.com or any of our social channels, where you’ll find our #QuarantineCuisine e-cookbook, cocktail recipes and live mixology through “SIP with PBI,” and ways to nominate local heroes for a well-deserved weekend at Eau Palm Beach.

INSIDER By Skye Sherman
Instead of discarding flowers after an event or once they were past their prime, Angela Compton, founder of the floral design studio The ALTARnative, sought ways to utilize them holistically. The Boynton Beach–based creative began drying flowers and crafting arrangements, crowns, organic potpourri, bath salts, and bath bombs. “My goal was to shed light on sustainable floristry practices, to honor flowers and their beauty throughout all stages of their lives,” she says. Eventually, Compton gravitated toward flower-dyed garments, especially silks, intimates, and loungewear. Today, she specializes in bouquet preservation: extracting color from aprèswedding flowers and using it on fabrics to generate a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Her usual medium? Kimonos, slips, maxi dresses, scarves, and kaftans. Compton explains that her process starts with treating the fabrics with a mordant that will help the natural dye from the flowers adhere to the fibers. Then, “the flowers are placed sporadically or intentionally to create either an abstract or patterned design,” she says. “The garment is rolled and tightened with string or bands and allowed to steam for hours or, in some cases, days.” Her romantic preservation work isn’t just for the woman in white. A handdyed silk scarf makes a sentimental gift for a bride’s mother or new mother-inlaw, and Compton’s dyed garment collections often appear in local boutiques and pop-ups. (altarnativedesign.com)

INSIDE SCOOP Place treasured moments close to his heart with a photo-lined tuxedo jacket ($475 for liner) from Tux Shop in Palm Beach Gardens. The process is simple: Email images and they’ll craft a pattern to the size of the jacket’s panels. “While some companies create and ship the liner, Tux Shop takes the time to make a personal collage for each groom, remove the existing lining, and sew in the new lining,” says owner Susan Damon. (tuxshoppalmbeach.com)
TREND REPORT
Wedding professional Stefany Allongo notes that, with approximately 9,000 weddings held every year in Palm Beach County, getting married here is as popular as ever. To help couples orchestrate their special days, Allongo, who made her foray into the industry as a planner in 2009, launched Married in Palm Beach, an online resource showcasing premier local vendors. PBI caught up with Allongo for a rundown on what’s hot in the world of weddings. (marriedinpalmbeach.com) 18
ORGANIC MOMENTS PHOTOGRAPHY
SENSE OF PLACE
Trending: Sustainability. As environmental consciousness has become more prevalent in our everyday lives, it has naturally progressed into the wedding industry. Ways to go green: Upcycle a family stone into a contemporary setting for engagement rings; use recycled stationery for everything from save the dates
to thank-you cards; repurpose flowers from the ceremony for the reception—they’re perfect for the sweetheart table, welcome table, or dessert display. Up next: Micro weddings. Couples invite no more than 40 guests and use their wedding budget to throw an over-the-top event for their nearest and dearest.

POSH POSTSCRIPT In a world of overflowing in-boxes and mundane junk mail, Dear Annabelle is a breath of fresh air. With a nod to tradition and a playful wink, the stationery line embraces the tangible and the timeless. New Yorker and Palm Beach regular Marcie Pantzer launched her cheeky collection of luxury paper goods in an effort to spread joy through meaningful connection—and swoon-worthy snail mail. “Dear Annabelle was born out of my deep love for letter writing,” explains Pantzer. “Our products are designed to delight and inspire, mixing classic motifs with playful, laugh-out-loud touches.”
Named after one of Pantzer’s four children, Dear Annabelle celebrates the craft of correspondence with high-quality notecards, notepads, place cards, and more. “In our modern, digital era, I feel it’s important to tap into practices that make us feel grounded, happy, and loved,” says Pantzer. “Sending or receiving a handwritten note is exactly that.” Want to write to your fiancé? Reach for Dear Annabelle’s Je T’aime notecards, emblazoned with sentimentalities. The Sweetheart Sayings notepads make for great additions to welcome bags, while adorable place cards help wedding attendees find their way at receptions. (dearannabelle.com)

FANTASY GARDEN College sweethearts celebrate their love with an ethereal, blossoming wedding at The Breakers
By Cathy Chestnut Photography by Chris Joriann

hen Roberta Zaccagnino and Alexander Benedict began discussing their nuptials, they envisioned a hip, modern ceremony and reception. But like in many storybook tales, a fairygodmother figure set the pair on a more enchanted path. Unbeknownst to Roberta and Alex, the groom’s mother, Lisa Benedict, met with the team at The Breakers during the initial planning stages to learn about the resort’s options. When she reported back to Roberta, her future daughterin-law was thrilled. “She surprised us,” says Roberta. “This had been my dream forever. [The Breakers] has such an oldworld feel and so much history.” The young couple was smitten with the classical, Mediterranean ambience of The Breakers, an elegant landmark that had appealed to Roberta ever since

Alex’s mother, Lisa Benedict (above), was instrumental in helping Roberta plan the big day. Roberta’s favorite buds inspired the watercolor garden design Happy Menocal Studio illustrated for the save-the-date cards, invitations, and the couple’s emblem.

she was a child. Although she grew up in the rural community of Cooperstown, New York, Roberta would visit her grandmother in West Palm Beach and later relocated to Palm Beach County to attend Lynn University. It was there, in the college’s cafeteria, that she first connected with Alex, who was raised in Boca Raton. He invited her to a party, and it didn’t take long before they became inseparable. They now reside in Boca Raton, where Roberta is a visual stylist for Bloomingdale’s at the Town Center at Boca Raton and Alex is an insurance agent. 32
The pair quickly found that they shared an affinity for the same movies, music, and outdoor activities, making it easy for them to connect with one another and build a strong foundation of friendship. “We do everything together,” says Alex. “I knew pretty early on—after a couple of months of dating—that I was going to end up marrying her. With her, I didn’t need to put on a mask; I didn’t have to show a certain side of me. I could just be myself, flaws and all.” His family took to Roberta, too. Roberta’s mother is deceased, and she considers Alex’s mother to be her own. His parents “love Roberta to pieces; they call her daughter,” he notes. “I have a very loving, warm family, and Roberta is a part of our family. That love is really evident.” A few years into their relationship, Alex and Roberta’s love led them away from Florida. After Roberta graduated in 2016, the couple left

behind family and friends to relocate to Long Island, New York, so Alex could attend law school. It wasn’t for him, and they didn’t like Long Island. “We toughed it out,” he says. “She had this whole life in South Florida and gave it all up to come with me so I could pursue something I wanted to do.” From the move, he recognized her deep commitment, and two months after they returned to Boca Raton in late 2017, he popped the question.
030_The Breakers Wedding_0620.indd 33
Once the duo set their hearts on the wedding location, Roberta longed to “embrace the romance of the hotel” by creating a fairy-tale garden to complement the blue-sky fresco ceiling within The Breakers’ opulent Mediterranean Ballroom. With a blooming landscape in mind, Roberta bought a botanical book and chose flowers that became integral to her wedding aesthetic, serving as the launching point for the watercolor invitations and save-the-
date cards by Happy Menocal Studio, as well as the chosen buds for the big day. “I wanted to do something ethereal,” she says. Fortunately, Lisa was ready to assist. Over a year and a half of planning, she and Roberta worked together on orchestrating the details. For example, Lisa designed an illustrated map of Palm Beach to include in the gift bags—jute totes festooned with a pineapple stencil made by Pretty in Paper—for visiting guests. “The closeness they have is so nice,” says Alex. “They have a lot in common and discovered a lot during the planning process. They are collaborative geniuses.” All of their preparation came to fruition in PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2020

Clockwise from top left: Always Flowers created jaw-dropping centerpieces; Roberta and Alex’s emblem graced the dance floor; tulips, roses, and hydrangeas greeted guests at the place-card table; an ice sculpture made a perfect display for The Breakers’ sushi hors d’oeuvres; guests dined on dishes such as lobster thermidor, artichoke soufflé, filet mignon, and grilled branzino.
a whirlwind of lush greenery, over-thetop pink florals, pops of gold, and candlelight reminiscent of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Unlike the Shakespearean play, however, Alex and Roberta’s wedding went off without a hitch. From the Friday rehearsal dinner at Bice, to the May 4 ceremony and reception, to 34
an oceanfront Sunday brunch, the weekend translated to pure bliss for the couple and their 210 guests. The only threat was a common one: the specter of rain. As a result, the ceremony shifted from outdoors to the Circle Ballroom, beneath the Venetian crystal chandelier and domed ceiling. A courtyard cocktail reception was also moved inside. In the end though, it only rained for 10 minutes during the ceremony—and Alex and Roberta were rewarded with a silver lining the next day. The send-off brunch on Sunday was supposed to be held in a courtyard, but the staff surprised the party with its primo Ocean Lawn, a relaxing scene set to a soundtrack of crashing waves. “It was so special,” says Roberta, choking up as she describes the weekend a year later. “I had no words for it for days. It was indescribable. People say something always goes wrong, [but] it was so magical.” Some of the couple’s most cherished memories from their wedding day included their first look and the intimate signing of the ketubah (the Jewish wedding contract) surrounded by family before the public exchange of vows, which Roberta touchingly ad-libbed. “What she said to me really took my breath away,” Alex says. “I was like, wow, this really is my best friend.”

Clockwise from above: Roberta and Alex made some of their favorite memories on the dance floor; lush centerpieces and lots of candlelight set a romantic tone for the reception; the bride dances with her father; The Breakers’ pastry team crafted a sevenlayer cake covered in fondant flowers.
Their time on the dance floor was also a highlight for the newlyweds. While guests enjoyed pre-reception cocktails, Roberta and Alex danced together in the empty Mediterranean Ballroom to Earth, Wind, & Fire’s “September”—in honor of the month in which they met— setting an energetic tone for the rest of the evening. Alex had planned it as a surprise. “It was our first official dance as a married couple,” says Roberta. “It was so surreal and one of the best moments ever.” After guests settled in, the couple shared their public first dance to “1, 2, 3, 4” by the Plain White T’s, a nostalgic touch for Roberta and Alex who attended one of the band’s concerts while still students at Lynn University. The dancing continued into the late hours. After the reception, the group relocated to the Magnolia Room for a Cinco de Mayo–themed after-party with sombreros, maracas, and ’90s hip-hop and mellow club music by Rock with U. The festivities didn’t cease until 3 a.m. “From the first look through the night, we were on that high with each other,” Roberta reflects. “It was just us and being in the moment. Nothing could stop us. We were together and that was it.” «

andell Golman is a vivacious woman who knows what she wants. When it came to her wedding, her decisiveness paid off where it counted most: in her choice of groom, venue, and attire. An Emmy Award–winning television producer, Randell currently serves as the content producer for Benzinga, a financial media company based in Detroit. However, her romance with her now-husband, Chad Gans, defied geographic boundaries. She met Chad at a restaurant in Chicago, where they lived at the time, and took it as a sign when she later learned that their mothers—both of whom have homes in Palm Beach County—were close friends long before the young couple ever crossed paths. “We had no clue,” Randell says of their mothers’ friendship. She notes that she and Chad had vacationed in Florida separately, but once they paired up, it became a spot they could share together. “It was one destination both of our families were at, so we could all get together for dinners, nights out, pickleball, and days at the pool. Immediately, our families bonded.”
040_FourSeasons_0620.indd 41
Both Randell and Chad’s wedding parties were 15 strong, and they all wore black jumpsuits and tuxedos of their own choosing. The ceremony took place on the Four Seasons’ oceanfront pool deck.
Randell and Chad, who works as director of acquisitions for a large real estate company, currently reside in Beverly Hills, Michigan. With their mutual Florida connection in mind, they chose the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach for their wedding festivities. The weekend-long event included a Friday evening poolside gathering, a bridal workout, an oceanside ceremony, and a black-tie reception, with off-property jaunts for the rehearsal dinner at E.R. Bradley’s Saloon, as well as rounds of golf for the guys. It all wrapped up with a Sunday Funday by the pool, featuring Don Juan PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JUNE 2020

1942 tequila and tacos. During the wedding cocktail hour, competing Detroit and Chicago food stations, representing the respective hometowns of the groom and bride, were a hit. “Almost everyone would have to travel for our wedding, so we wanted to make it a fun-filled, full weekend of nice, warm weather and a vacation where everyone could be at the same resort the whole time,” Randell says. “As formal as it was, in my mind, it was more casual. It was elegant and simple but beautiful.” Randell aimed for that same blend of elegant 42
simplicity in her bridal attire. The self-proclaimed tomboy has long gravitated toward jumpsuits as they speak to her sartorial sensibility and flatter her petite figure. “I grew up with three brothers,” she notes. “I love sports, and I am athletic—not outdoorsy like going camping or fishing, just a guy’s girl. I played boys’ hockey and boys’ soccer growing up. I don’t dress too femininely. I just am not a girly-girl by any means.” Given her background in media production, Randell had a hunch that her hunt for a jumpsuit would make a great narrative on Say Yes to the Dress, and she appeared twice on the TLC reality show’s eighteenth season. Randell and her bridal entourage, including mother Cidney Golman and future mother-in-law Beth Gans, made the sojourn to Kleinfeld Bridal in Manhattan, and the experience was captured on the show. In keeping with her signature style, Randell was determined to find a jumpsuit to wear for her walk down the aisle, while the rest of the group was gunning for a gown. Bridal designer and expert Randy Fenoli excavated the store’s inventory and came up with only one jumpsuit—a sequined, Studio 54–esque number that didn’t go over well, not even with Randell. Luckily, designer Hayley Paige was at Kleinfeld’s that day and worked with Randell to create a custom jumpsuit in her popular Marrakesh fabric. “She’ll be the chicest bride yet,” Paige announced after presenting a sketch of her vision, dubbing it “The Randell.” In the end, Randell came to a decision that pleased herself, her family, and her fiancé, opting to wear a Made with Love gown for the ceremony and later changing into the bespoke jumpsuit for the reception.

“I wanted her in a dress for the whole thing,” says Chad. “Obviously, she wanted to be in a jumpsuit, so we made our first compromise. She was classy walking down the aisle, then got to change into a fun outfit for the party.” The couple also gave their bridal party some freedom to express themselves. As an ode to her de facto wardrobe essential, Randell had her bridesmaids select black jumpsuits in a variety of cuts. While Chad donned a custom Label tux, his groomsmen picked their own tuxedos. “It’s a little more modern,” Randell says. “Everyone’s personality could come through. It was a big, loving group, and that’s what’s most important to us.” Because Randell sported two bridal outfits, she and Chad were able to have two first looks. She unveiled the jumpsuit right before the reception kicked off in the Four Seasons’ Royal Poinciana Ballroom, which was bedecked in a black-and-white theme, complete with a GG logo, echoing the Gucci insignia, that the couple created of their initials. Earlier in the day, Randell and Chad shared an official first look before the ceremony and forged a memory that will last a lifetime. “We spent all day apart prepping for our I dos, and it was so amazing to finally get to be alone together to see each other,” says Randell. “It was outside the hotel in the gardens and at some point, the sprinklers came on,” she adds with good humor. The day, however, “was more than we even dreamed feasible.” «

EXPERT ADVICE LEAH MULLER of Vero Beach–based Leah Muller Interiors shares simple first-home DIY projects. (leahmullerinteriors.com) Fireplace facelift: “Paint the stone or brick around the fireplace white. Make sure it’s the same white as your trim color, but it doesn’t need to be the same finish; consider a matte or high-gloss finish instead for a contemporary look. I’d also suggest painting the inside of the fireplace to remove old soot marks. Consult your local paint supply store for the appropriate fire-retardant paint.” No fireplace? “Add a linear gas fireplace. Using a remote control or single switch, you can turn flames on and off instantly. The long narrow style provides a contemporary look and coordinates with almost any noncombustible material surrounding: ceramic tile, glass tile, stone, porcelain, brick, and concrete.” Highlight: “Replace your ceiling fan with ambient lighting; the junction box is already there. We’ve been installing lots of oversize lighting in living rooms for a stylish accent. We’re specifying lighting from raffia and seagrass textures to two-tone metals, all in an extra-large scale.” Potential pitfall: “Be careful of your ceiling heights—you’ll need to make sure the light fixture is the appropriate size for the room.”

Updating bathroom cabinets with a new paint color can have a big impact, says Muller. “This project requires patience and may take two or three weekends because it’s best to use oil-based paint, which takes time to dry. Oil-based paints do well with a natural long-bristle brush, not nylon; try Purdy or Wooster brands. I recommend a soft gray-blue color in a satin finish, like Benjamin Moore’s Glass Slipper 1632.” Get the look: “To avoid brushstrokes, purchase high-quality brushes. Low-quality brushes show paint strokes, period.”

“Upgrade to an energy-efficient, multifunction showerhead and match the finish to the faucets,” advises Muller, who prefers polished chrome fixtures in bathrooms. “The finish is clean and sparkles quickly after cleaning. EXPERT ADVICE
SEAN DAIGLE, design consultant at Downsview Kitchens in Juno Beach, gives PBI his take on trends and can’t-go-wrong choices. (downsviewkitchens.com) Hub of the home: “Fifty years ago, it was one person working in a kitchen in the corner of the house; now the kitchen is a hub of the home. Everybody wants it open to the rest of the house to feel like part of the living space. It’s become less of an afterthought and more of the middle of the home.” First things first: “I always tell clients [to] start from the ground up. Pick what you love first with floors, cabinet colors, countertops, and then finish with the backsplash and the hardware; that’s the jewelry of the kitchen that you put on at the very end.” Dreaming of a white kitchen: “A white kitchen is always classic. White is one of those things that just never goes away. I try to stay away from trends because I want a kitchen that, in 10 years, looks like I just put it in.”

TASTE
IN SEASON
JUICY FRUIT In the summer months, nothing tastes more refreshing than biting into a ripe watermelon. This Florida crop hits its prime in June and yields myriad savory and sweet bites for relief from the heat. Some ideas to use it up: Run chunks of watermelon through a juicer for a thirst-quenching beverage or, better yet, a cocktail mixer. Create a light salad with watermelon cubes, chopped pistachios, fresh mint, feta cheese, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Veering on the spicy side, try grilling large slices slathered
000_TASTEOPEN_0620.indd 63
in olive oil and honey and top them with a pinch of paprika and cayenne pepper, a sprinkling of cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice. Or, cool down with frosty popsicles. Here’s how: Purée watermelon chunks, lime juice, agave, and coconut milk in a blender; the fat in the coconut milk keeps the watermelon from separating. Spike it with vodka, tequila, or rum, if desired. Pour into molds and finish with additional layers of coconut milk and puréed kiwi before freezing. —Liz Petoniak

Build Your Own BAR CART If you’re quarantining, there’s some good news: While bars may be closed, liquor stores are open, meaning now is a great time to learn about mixology. Here’s a guide to everything you need to make quality cocktails at home. —Mark Spivak
CRATE & BARREL
STOCK THE ESSENTIALS
MIX THE DRINKS Long drinks: While nothing might seem easier than making a Scotch and soda or a vodka tonic, remember that the amount of mixer will determine the strength and flavor of the drink. Four ounces of mixer to 2 ounces of spirits will yield a tasty drink with roughly 12 percent alcohol by volume. Short classics: One of the ironies of mixology is that the simplest drinks are the hardest to make properly. When mixing a martini
Spirits: Bottles of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey. Depending on your taste, the whiskey can be sweet (bourbon), spicy (rye), or astringent (Scotch). Liqueurs: One bottle each of sweet and dry vermouth, one herbal spirit such as Campari, and an orange-based liqueur such as Cointreau Mixers: Club soda and tonic Bitters: One bottle of Angostura Fruit: Oranges, lemons, and limes Equipment: A two-part Boston shaker, a Hawthorne strainer, a juice press, a bar spoon, and a double-sided jigger (either .5 and .75 ounces, or 1 and 1.5 ounces). We assume you have knives, cutting boards, and ice. Don’t
worry about glassware; it’s not wine, and it will all taste just fine regardless of the glass. Books: A basic guide such as Dale DeGroff’s The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks or The Joy of Mixology: The Consummate Guide to the Bartender’s Craft by Gary Regan
lTIP: THE AXIOM “GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT” RINGS TRUE, SO BUY HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS ACROSS THE BOARD. SEEK OUT MIXERS SUCH AS FEVER-TREE AND Q TONIC. MAKE YOUR OWN SOUR MIX USING FRESH FRUIT AND SIMPLE SYRUP. YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU THE NEXT MORNING.
or Manhattan, follow directions as precisely as you would if baking. There’s no margin for error, and this is where the quality of the ingredients will really shine through. Punch: Looking for the ultimate quarantine libation? Punch can be made in large batches, and it only improves over time. Remember the adage: “One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak,” i.e. one part lime juice, two parts sweetener, three parts rum or another spirit, and four parts water. Unlike with a short drink, feel free to improvise until you find a mixture that suits your taste, and use fresh fruit to get a dose of vitamin C. Toddies: A hot toddy may not cure the coronavirus, but it’s good for whatever else may ail you. Mix 1.5 ounces whiskey in a mug with hot water, add several teaspoons each of honey and lemon juice, and garnish with a cinnamon stick. For a cold toddy, use rye whiskey, oranges, lemons, cinnamon sticks, cloves, honey, Earl Grey tea, and bitters; serve with ice.
lTIP: KEEP A
SEPARATE ICE TRAY FILLED WITH BOTTLED OR PURIFIED WATER.

FARM FRESH
RETURN TO ROOTS PAPPHOTO
Diners have grown accustomed to seeing Swank Specialty Produce at their favorite restaurants. Nowadays, Jodi and Darrin Swank are coming up with creative ways to get their farm-fresh ingredients to the public. Their Swank Sacks, part of their community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, have exploded. Participants pay $60 and receive an average of 10 pounds of food—enough to feed a family of four for one week. The sacks are available for pick up at the farm or select Whole Foods. “We’ve gone from 10 sacks per day to over 30,” says Jodi Swank. “We plan to continue supplying them through the summer.” Swank has also kicked off its own farmers market. Held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., it features a dozen vendors selling locally produced and sourced foods. Swank’s

open-air, 8,500-square-foot pole barn allows for 30 socially distanced shoppers at a time. “This crisis is a great opportunity to introduce people to foods they’ve never eaten before,” says Jodi. “We really value the support we’re receiving from the community and hope that people will become used to fresh ingredients free of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. As difficult as things are, we may come to a new appreciation of the value of healthy living.” Loxahatchee (swankspecialtyproduce.com) —M.S.

TASTE OFF THE VINE
ALSACE Escape
Underrated and unappreciated for far too long, Alsatian wine is starting to SHINE By Mark Spivak
NORBERT HECHT PHOTOGRAPHE

The unique terroir of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht’s grand cru Rangen de Thann vineyard produces exceptional wines. 68
ike the Sphinx, the Alsace region of France possesses a few riddles. Foremost among them is this: Americans fall in love with the wines when they visit the area, enjoying them in restaurants and while touring estates. When they return home, however, their newfound appreciation too often becomes a distant memory. Part of the problem is that 90 percent of Alsace wine is white, and the United States, like many other places, retains a red wine culture. When most of your peer group drinks full-bodied reds, your perspective changes. And for Americans who haven’t spent time in Alsace, it’s difficult to recreate the magic. As a border region between France and Germany, Alsace has belonged to both countries at various times. The wines bear some similarities to those made in Germany, although the Alsatian versions exhibit higher alcohol levels and are mostly fermented fully dry. At the top of the quality scale sit the four noble varieties: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Gewürztraminer, all of which make for excellent sipping in the summer. To experience the best of Alsace, seek out the following producers. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht: ZH represents the shining jewel in the Alsace crown. The Humbrecht family boasts a viticultural history dating back to 1620. The current domain was established in 1959 with the marriage of Léonard Humbrecht to Geneviève Zind; Léonard’s son, Olivier, leads the charge today. Year in and year out, they turn out stunning wines from the grand cru vineyards of Rangen, Brand, Hengst, Goldert, and Clos Windsbuhl. Single vineyard selections retail in the $60-$80 range. Maison Trimbach: Pierre Trimbach, the twelfth generation in a legacy dating back to 1626, oversees winemaking at this family estate. Try the Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile ($68) or the Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle ($48). First among equals is Riesling Clos Sainte Hune ($215), a beauty capable of aging for decades under the right storage conditions.

Its Les Princes Abbés range represents excellent value at the $20-$25 price point. Among the grand crus, they’re known for Rieslings from Spiegel ($30), Saering ($35), and Kitterlé ($45) as well as their Gewürztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles Cuvée Anne ($90). Domaine Paul Blanck: Frédérick and Philippe Blanck took over from their father in 1984 and now meticulously farm 86 acres of vineyards in a sustainable and chemical-free fashion. Their wines span from the Classique series for everyday drinking ($20-$25) to the grand cru Rieslings of Furstentum ($30) and Schlossberg ($35). Hugel: Alsace is famous for dessert wines, and this is where Hugel excels. When conditions permit, Hugel makes a Vendange Tardive (late harvest) Gewürztraminer ($80) and Riesling ($110), as well as an extremely sweet Sélection de Grains Nobles from Gewürztraminer ($180). Pierre Sparr: Yet another historic estate (this one dates to 1680),
From left: Grand cru grapes from Domaines Schlumberger; balanced and elegant, Domaine Weinbach’s collection of wines showcases Alsace’s appeal.
Pierre Sparr produces a reliable line of entry-level wines, several regional sparklers (a Crémant d’Alsace Brut Reserve and Brut Rosé), and both Pinot Gris ($30) and Gewürztraminer ($45) from grand cru Mambourg. Domaine Weinbach: Catherine Faller and her two sons currently run this estate, which Capuchin monks founded in 1612. The vines are farmed biodynamically from four grand cru sites and two historic vineyards. Weinbach is most noted for its Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine ($70), Gewürztraminer Cuvée Laurence ($45), and Riesling Clos des Capucins Cuvée Theo ($40). «

WELLNESS
Green GIANT Once relegated as a costar to various dips, celery has recently taken center stage. “Celery juice is a powerhouse of nutrients, specific salts, and anti-inflammatory benefits packed into a very low-calorie drink,” says Alexis Schulze, co-founder of Nekter Juice Bar. “Of all the health ‘fads’ to emerge, this one is really a no-brainer.” Full of vitamins K, C, and B6, as well as potassium, manganese, folate, calcium, riboflavin, and magnesium, celery juice is also loaded with electrolytes, making it a natural choice for a sports drink. Nekter’s nationwide locations, including one in Delray Beach, offer a freshly made, pure celery juice called Celery Refresh and a Celery Detox blend for easy take-out and online ordering. The 16.9ounce bottle of Celery Detox, which would take roughly two full heads of celery to make at home, is enhanced with lemon and mint to improve flavor. Drink it anytime for a nutritional boost or first thing in the morning to reap its purported digestive and detoxing benefits. (nekterjuicebar.com)

BALANCE WARM-UP
Today’s unpredictable environment doesn’t mean you have to abandon your fitness goals. That being said, a change in societal norms has necessitated a shift in how we achieve those goals. Many local fitness professionals are now offering online classes and training that provide personal interaction and challenges. Get up off the couch and discover ways you can get in shape right where you are.

The Guide: Olivia Figueroa, a Palm Beach–based certified personal trainer, fitness model, and former ballet dancer, highlights the importance of form and lines as the fundamentals of her training style. The Workouts: After an initial consultation to assess her clients’ individual needs and goals, Figueroa offers three options: access to her online membership that includes a library of workouts, barre classes, grocery lists, and recipes; weekly customized personal training plans with regular check-ins for additional guidance and structure; and virtual training via FaceTime and Zoom for those who prefer one-on-one instruction and accountability. Figueroa recommends a full hour of online training at least four times per week. (livfitnesstraining.com)
The Guide: Jacquelyn Quesada Bevilacqua’s unique Studios Etc. in Palm Beach incorporates Labarre, Labarre Pilates, and Momentim Cycle. The Workouts: Because a large portion of her clientele travels during the summer, Bevilacqua has been providing virtual private instruction for more than five years. She leads personalized 30-, 60-, and 90-minute sessions, created in consideration of a client’s needs and injuries, over FaceTime, Zoom, or Skype, depending on the client’s tech accessibility and preference. No equipment? No worries. Bevilacqua will personally loan and deliver any mats or props you might be missing. (studiosetc.com)

The Guide: Fitness Hub Studios, the West Palm Beach gym known for hosting more than 100 engaging classes each week in its studios, has taken the fitness fun online. The Workouts: Choose from more than 20 classes, including Zumba, Power Abs, Spartan HIIT, and even Belly Dancing, live-streamed every week to your living room. To participate, join the Fitness Hub Family Facebook page and click on the Events link. A desktop computer,
laptop, or tablet is preferred for viewing. Necessary equipment (like a yoga mat, light dumbbells, or a chair) will be listed for each class, as well as the day and time it is offered. (fitnesshubfl.com)
The Guide: Tribe Studio, a group fitness boutique, has historically offered a variety of cutting-edge classes in its Jupiter studio, many of which members can now access online. The Workouts: Tribe has compiled a curated selection of its most popular classes that require minimal equipment for its private Facebook group, The Tribe Studio Collective. These 60-minute offerings include everything from cardio, resistance band, and foam roller workouts to Pilates and yoga. Classes are live-streamed daily but can also be accessed in the library, so clients can work out on their own schedule. (tribestudiopalmbeach.com)

STEAM Steaming prepares skin by loosening up clogged pores and enhancing circulation. Try holding your face over a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes or performing your facial immediately after a shower.
«

CLEANSE Wash your face with your preferred cleanser, such as Alastin’s Gentle Cleanser ($45). Gently massage it into your whole face for 30-60 seconds and then rinse with warm water.
EXFOLIATE OR APPLY A MASK For problematic skin, use an exfoliator without gritty scrubs to prevent irritation and further breakouts. Try Revision’s Black Mask ($45) for acne or ZO’s Exfoliating Polish ($67) for congested skin. For sensitive or dry skin, a calming, nourishing mask will add moisture.
STEAM WITH A TOWEL Wet a small towel with hot water and drape it over your face to absorb the steam. Gently clean off excess product, but be careful not to scrub and cause irritation.
TONE A good toner will remove remaining oil, dirt, and debris and also soothe, nourish, and hydrate skin while restoring its delicate pH balance.

MOISTURIZE Skipping moisturizer will make naturally oily skin go into overdrive, clogging pores and making skin more susceptible to infection and premature aging. Select a hyaluronic acid–based moisturizer for oily skin or a more nourishing one for dry skin, such as iS Clinical’s Youth Intensive Créme ($225).

MINDFULNESS
HOLD YOUR
PEACE
Finding peace in everyday routines has never been more important. Here, Dr. Barbara Winter, a Boca Raton–based psychologist, whose specialties include advanced training in mindfulness, shares techniques for self-soothing. (drbarbarawinter.com) PBI: What does mindfulness mean today? Winter: Meditation is a large part of mindfulness, [and that is] focused concentration. There is also the practice of loving kindness that extends our compassion and love to ourselves. These are phrases we can say, preferably with our awareness of breath, such as “may I be safe,” “may I be happy,” and “may I live with ease.” We then can extend the phrases to others who have been afflicted with pain. But mindfulness today extends to everything. There is “everything mindful”—mindful eating, mindful brushing of the teeth, and now we can practice mindful handwashing. It is about being in the present moment. How can people find peace in routines and everyday activities?
Routines ground us. Rituals stay in our memory, of our bodies and our minds, and we define ourselves by them. Meditation, mindfulness, and loving kindness practices can be done daily. We can find the space in our day to stay present, experience gratitude and loving kindness, and be free not from pain but from suffering. A daily practice builds consistency l FOR MORE MINDFULNESS TIPS, and resilience and opens your heart. VISIT PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED. What are some simple exercises COM/BARBARAWINTER or techniques to try? Try mindful eating. It provides a space to be present in our day. Take that pause and use all of your senses to focus your attention on that activity.
