FROM THE PUBLISHER

As we reflect upon the COVID-19 pandemic, our hearts are filled with gratitude for those on the front lines, particularly those in health care—the doctors, nurses, and medical staff who are working tirelessly, putting themselves in harm’s way to care for those who are ill. Palm Beach County’s world-class medical community is a blessing to us all. Heroes in many forms have emerged during the coronavirus crisis. Thank you to the employees of our grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, and other essential retail locations who have kept their doors open, shelves stocked, and patience intact as we inquired, again and again, when the next shipment of hand sanitizer would arrive. To those behind the scenes—the truck drivers, the mail carriers—who continue to operate business as usual so that we can maintain some sense of normalcy, we salute you. We already knew teachers were our heroes, but we are reminded of their commitment to our children during stay-at-home quarantines. The creative ways they have engaged students with online learning and the stories of caravans of educators driving through neighborhoods to show their support and comfort our kids are simply amazing. A message to those in the restaurant industry: We are here for you and will be waiting in line when you reopen. In the meantime, thank you for your dedication to serving your wonderful cuisine via takeout. Food is a reason we gather and share special moments with friends, colleagues, and family. We count the days until we can grace your dining rooms and patios again. Small and local businesses are the backbone of our economy. They have supported Palm Beach Illustrated for nearly seven decades, and I encourage all of us to continue to support area shop owners and their staff as we emerge stronger together. Many in our community are truly alone during this crisis, cut off from family, friends, and support systems. If you have the ability, please find a cause that speaks to you and make a difference with your donation, talent, and time. And thank you to our readers, who have contacted us with information, direction, and supportive messages while we readied this issue for press. Our team, too, is affected by the current situation. This magazine was written, designed, and edited at dining room tables, in home offices, and on laptops from points all over Palm Beach County and beyond. I hope that by the time you are reading this letter, the travel bans will have been lifted, hugging and handshakes will once again be welcomed, the phones will be ringing, orders will be placed, and you will be able to buy toilet paper anywhere! In the interim, let us know how we can support you.

FROM THE EDITOR

Show of hands: Who has learned a ton over the past few weeks? During this unprecedented threat to our health, and to everything we hold dear, we’ve had to quarantine, learn to live alone together, make do with a lot less, and generally figure things out as we went along. But we’ve also had to stop and think about our actions. Was everyone around us safe? Did a friend or neighbor need our help? Were there supplies we could share with someone in need? If there was one positive thing about COVID-19, it was this coming together of community. Every cloud, as they say, has a silver lining. No one knows this better than moms. As schools and businesses were shuttered, moms had to get extra resourceful to keep children healthy, happy, and engaged. On Instagram, I watched my friends map out days to precision so as to maintain a sense of normalcy. Moms and kids cooked together, decorated T-shirts, worked on puzzles, invented new games in the backyard. At our house, we tasked our 11-year-old twins with helping renovate our garage apartment. They frowned at first, but when they got into a rhythm, they had a huge sense of accomplishment (and some extra spending money). It’s amazing how much you can do, and how creative you can get, when the daily routine gets disrupted. In this issue, our cover story focuses on some extraordinary moms who not only keep a lot of balls in the air but do so with style. These supersmart career women, including cover models Beth Aschenbach and Danielle Norcross, are accomplished in their own right, so it’s no surprise that they also excel at parenting. Meet them—and their little ones—in “Super Moms” on page 42. As we contemplate a post-coronavirus world, nothing is timelier than self-care and integrative wellness. We have assembled tips and strategies for physical, mental, and emotional health—apropos anytime, but even more so in the face of the pandemic that has changed our world. Turn to “Inside Insight” on page 48 for inspiration. Be well, friends!

Here’s a colorfully good reason to take a scenic drive or southerly ride on Brightline to Miami: Marie Robinson Salon. Renowned for her head-turning hues that frequently grace the catwalks and splash across the covers and pages of beauty bibles like Bazaar, Elle, and Vogue, the celebrity colorist Marie Robinson opened her eponymous salon with her husband, business partner, and hairstylist Abell Oujaddou in 2017. Nestled inside the Aventura Mall on Biscayne Bay, the 2,500-square-foot space has become the go-to spot for beauty insiders and entertainment A-listers. The salon features a sleek, residential-imbued design aesthetic with a living room-style waiting room and vibrant works of art. Powered by Robinson, Oujaddou, and their team of accomplished colorists, stylists, and makeup artists, the salon delivers a comprehensive menu of services, ranging from restorative hair treatments to modern cuts and customized chromas that gorgeously enhance the client’s personal appearance. Shuttling between the South Florida outpost and flagship salon in New York City, Robinson is a color wunderkind who meets regularly with her Hollywood royalty clients, including Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Ryan Gosling, and works with stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Emma Stone, who seek her skills when career-making tress transformations are required. Robinson — who trained alongside some of the most-recognized names in the hair industry, including stylist Danilo and balayage expert Christopher Robin — has customized her salons to serve as creative incubators for trendsetting talent. If you’re hunting for the perfect color, cut, glamorous extensions, or a healthy, mane-perfecting treatment, look no further than Marie Robinson Salon.

Lisa Kaw in COLOR

West Palm Beach artist Lisa Kaw’s work stands out not just for her distinct collage-like style—think vibrant colors, bold lines, and mixed patterns—but for its infectious joy. “My art celebrates the happy things in life,” says Kaw. “Sunshine, rainbows, cacti with mustaches.” Kaw, who has painted two murals at Rosemary Square, recently transitioned from acrylics to digital art and now relies solely on an iPad, Apple Pencil, and Procreate. Between licensing her work for canvas prints at Abacoa’s Ready2HangArt and selling on WayFair and Overstock, creating is her full-time gig. Fortunately, our tropical surrounds provide constant inspiration. “Up north, everything turns gray in the winter, but here the party swings into high gear,” she says. “The other day I wore a giant toucan ring with a crazy toucan purse and didn’t even stand out.” Next on Kaw’s docket: expanding into textiles, stationery, and beyond. “I’d love to roll into Target one day and grab a Lisa Kaw notebook, wrapping paper, rug, and pillows.” (instagram.com/lisakaw)

LOCAL LOVE

We celebrate four fantastic “MOMPRENEURS” who make their mark as creators— of children, yes, but also designer sweets, big-budget events, and more

FRANCESCA COVIELLO

Mother MAKERS

JENNY KIKER Job: Owner and artist, Living Pattern (livingpattern.net) Mother of: One boy, Mick Xander Creative superpower: My plants speak to me—they tell me how to paint them. Career highlight: My art being featured in my favorite modern furniture and home decor brand, West Elm. Motherhood win: Having a baby who likes to be worn in a wrap while Mommy paints. I don’t go a day without: Drawing and painting, if His Majesty (my son) allows. When I get an evening alone, you can find me: Asleep

«

Job: Owner and cake designer, Southern Belle’s Cakery (sbcakery.com) Mother of: Two girls, Elizabeth and Emilia Creative superpower: Cake decorating and design Career highlight: Turning my love for baking into a thriving business. Motherhood win: Even during all of life’s chaos, my girls are the ones who stop me in my tracks and remind me to take a deep breath and appreciate what truly matters. How I balance work and motherhood: Telling my girls (and husband) if they ever want to eat cake again, they’ll stay out of the kitchen! We have some sticky fingers in our house—their weakness is my buttercream frosting. I don’t go a day without: Coffee and being thankful for my family and business. All I want for Mother’s Day is: A massage!

Job: Design professor, Palm Beach State College; owner, Gather & Seek and The Station (gatherandseek.com; thestationwpb.com) Mother of: One girl, Cora Creative superpower: Art directing an extremely talented team at Gather & Seek and The Station. Career highlight: Opening The Station and bringing opportunity to like-minded creatives in West Palm Beach. Motherhood win: Eating while breastfeeding at the same time (without dropping food on Cora). How I balance work and motherhood: Finding the new rhythm. In this first year of motherhood, it seems I have to get used to shorter periods of “focus time,” and tell myself it’s okay that I’m not accomplishing my entire to-do list in the same way. All I want for Mother’s Day is: A pool day followed by baby snuggles.

ERICA ROURKE PHOTOGRAPHY

DANIELLE ZELAYA

KATIE ARBOGAST Job: Owner and creative director, 59 & Bluebell (59andbluebell.com) Mother of: One boy, Grey Creative superpower: Snapping my fingers and bam— the average room is turned into a magical wedding. Career highlight: My first wedding at The Breakers Motherhood win: Bedtime routine and bath time are my favorite, so I love when I can be home to tuck him into bed. How I balance work and motherhood: The honest answer? I don’t. The true balance doesn’t exist, in my opinion. My good friend Janderyn Makris of Earth and Sugar gave me the best advice: It’s not a balance, it’s about making the most of the time you have together. I don’t go a day without: A Cuban coffee and kissing those smushy cheeks.

Florida Fangirl

When Grandview Heights resident Amanda Mizell, aka The Flohemian on Instagram, found herself gallivanting around the Sunshine State for her 9-to-5 in pharmaceutical sales, she squeezed her work trips into something a bit juicier. Coast to coast and Keys to Panhandle, Mizell showcases offbeat, authentic Florida, from roadside stops to natural wonders to long-standing institutions. Her new website is a repository for her insight into all things Florida—complete with road trip guides, a Google Map with hidden gems, a roundup of the best key lime pies, and more. Next, Mizell plans to curate an online “souvenir shop” with Florida-made products and art, plus themed Airbnbs throughout the state. Here, she outlines three local hits. (theflohemian.com)

SUMMER READS

From society scandals to history stranger than fiction, these new Florida-related titles belong in your beach bag

Bubble in the Sun Christopher Knowlton This nonfiction narrative examines how the wealth and excess of Florida’s 1920s land boom, concentrated in South Florida, brought on the Great Depression. 26

1

Naked Came the Florida Man: A Novel Tim Dorsey You’ll laugh out loud at the antics of Serge A. Storms and his stoner sidekick, Coleman, on their cemeterythemed road trip from Key West to Lake Okeechobee. The Last Train to Key West Chanel Cleeton The latest installment of historical fiction about a Cuban sugar baron family who fled to Palm Beach during the Revolution is set along the Overseas Railroad as the Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 barrels toward the Keys.

3

Blowing Rocks Preserve “Visit in three phases: a calm day during low tide so you can ‘spelunk’ the shoreline; snorkel the rocks; and then in high tide and high winds so you can see what Blowing Rocks is really about.”

The Banyan Tree Tunnel on SE St. Lucie Blvd. “A completely underrated drive. Nearby, Gilbert’s Coffee Bar is dedicated to Florida history, and their horchata iced coffee is to-die-for.”

A Palm Beach Wife Susannah Marren Steeped in gossip, glamour, and galas, this addictive novel features an uppercrust woman whose husband loses their fortune overnight.

Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America’s Xanadu Les Standiford Part biography, part travel writing, the newest nonfiction from a prestigious Florida historian examines Henry Flagler’s transformation of Palm Beach from wild jungle to chic sanctum.

Eyewear designer Edward Beiner understood style from an early age. Beiner’s father was a jeweler in Brazil, so he was familiar with the design process. His own love of accessories and eyewear in particular took off after he visited an optical boutique in Toronto. “I saw the level of intricacy that goes into designing a true quality frame, and I had such an appreciation for the artistry,” he says. After earning degrees in history and optics from Ryerson University, Beiner opened his first store in Miami in 1981. Over time, he expanded to 11 Florida outposts, including locations on Worth Avenue and in The Gardens Mall. At once dedicated to quality and innovation, Beiner recently launched a 3D-printed line and continues to craft glasses with the same attention to detail he appreciates in his collections of watches, shoes, and classic cars. A Miami resident and Palm Beach regular together with Daniela, his wife of 34 years, and their two sons, Beiner also has a home in Park City, Utah. —Skye Sherman

The WRIGHT Stuff

With its new G 90 FLAGSHIP, Genesis redefines what a true LUXURY SEDAN should be By Howard Walker

Architectural rock star Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities.” With that philosophy in mind, I’m sure Wright would have loved this flagship 2020 G90 from Genesis. After all, it positively brims with life’s luxuries without skimping on all those necessities—such as wheels. And much as Wright strived to achieve during his prolific 70-year career, the G90 makes one heck of a design statement. Okay, let’s get that 800-pound gorilla out of the way first. Naturally, I’m referring to the grille. Love it or loathe it, it does command as much attention as a Mack truck in a china store. And that’s exactly the point: 38

PRICE: FROM $73,195 ENGINE: 3.3-LITER TWINTURBO V-6 POWER: 365 HP TORQUE: 376 LB-FT TRANSMISSION: 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC 0-60: 5.4 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 155 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 205/75 INCHES WEIGHT: 4,800 POUNDS WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE, REGARDLESS OF PRICE, THERE ARE FEW MORE LUXURIOUS WAYS TO GET FROM POINTS A TO B.

Genesis wants this new G90 to get noticed, to stand out from the crowd, to start a conversation. Not that in-your-face grilles are anything new in the automotive world these days. BMW’s swollen kidneys on the latest 7 Series have become almost comically ginormous. Lexus’ spindle on the LS? It’s about as subtle as a plane crash. Ditto the chrome-infused maw on Audi’s A8. But I do like the diamond-pattern surface of the G90’s twinkling-chrome grille. It’s a motif repeated throughout the car, from the leather stitching inside to the headlights to the 19-inch alloys. And what awesome wheels they are. Complex, ornate without being cheesy, and total head-turners, they look like something you might spy on a $200-grand Mercedes-Maybach. In keeping with its flagship status, the G90 is a whopper. Stretching 205 inches bow to stern, it’s up there in size with such driveway hoggers as the Lexus LS, BMW 7, and Audi A8. But in the G90, almost every inch is dedicated to enhancing the comfort of those lucky enough to be ensconced inside. Take the rear seats, for example, which are nothing less than fully reclining La-Z-Boys. Slip off your Guccis, close your eyes, and

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

you’ll be at grandma’s house before you know it. Select the Ultimate package, and those rear loungers will come equipped with cooling and massage functions; the right seat will even boast an extendable footrest. Overall, the cabin’s quality and craftsmanship verges on Bentleyesque. There are acres of quilted Nappa leather, brushed-aluminum accents, and truly gorgeous open-pore wood. Genesis engineers also strived to create a pin-drop-quiet oasis by installing triple-sealed doors, insulated acoustic glass, and layer upon layer of sound-hushing materials. Out on the street, the big G throws off any pretensions of sportiness with a single-minded focus on noise-canceling refinement and silent running. The two engines available—a range-topping, 5.0-liter, 420-hp V-8, plus a 3.3-liter, twin-turbo, 365-hp V-6—are both kings of calm, propelling the G90 at triple-digit velocities with barely a murmur. Our Porto Red tester came with the turbine-smooth V-6, and in the 600-plus miles I shared with it over one blissful week of driving, I never lusted after the V-8. For all its refinement, the V-6 packs a mean punch. Mated to an alert,

l

FOLLOW HOWARD WALKER’S THE WHEEL WORLD BLOG ON PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM

super-smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic, it will rocket the G90 from standstill to 60 mph in a brisk 5.4 seconds. Yes, there’s a Sport setting to sharpen throttle response, add weight to the steering, and adjust the front seat side bolsters for added support. But, when it comes to highend long-distance travel, leave it in Comfort for an ultra-serene ride. To many, the real appeal of this flagship Genesis is going to be its competitive pricing. The range starts with the 3.3T at $73,195, with allwheel drive adding $2,500. The big 5.0 V-8 stickers at $76,695—many thousands less than the German competition. Add the fact that Genesis has snatched the top spot in the 2020 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study, and the new G90 has a lot going for it. Frank Lloyd would probably agree that this could well be the “Wright” choice. «

Smokin’ HOT

PBI hitches a ride in Cigarette Racing’s 2,700-horsepower, 59-foot TIRRANNA SPEED MACHINE

By Howard Walker

I

’m feeling the need for speed. So, let’s take a ride in Cigarette Racing’s crazy-fast Tirranna AMG Edition, a beauty that boasts six 450-hp Mercury Racing outboards totaling 2,700 hp. That all translates to a top speed of 80 mph. Oh, yeah. I’ve come to opening day of the 2020 Miami International Boat Show to take a drag off of this latest $3.3 million Cigarette. Conditions, however, fall far short of stellar, with a stiff easterly filling Biscayne Bay with some frisky whitecaps. This is going to be wild. Behold the Tirranna and it seems huge. It is, in fact, the biggest Cigarette ever, measuring 14 feet across and almost 60 feet from pointy bow to broad stern. These are the dimensions needed should you require enough room to party with 25 of your closest friends. Miami-based Cigarette Racing introduced the Tirranna (a name derived from the Australian aboriginal term for “running water”) to mark its fiftieth anniversary. The version I’ve come to experience is the one-off Mercedes-AMG Edition, the latest installment in Cigarette’s 13-year bespoke-car-boat partnership with Mercedes’ AMG performance division.

For 2020, the big Cigarette took its inspiration from Mercedes’ own box on wheels: the 577-hp Mercedes-AMG G 63. Both the Tirranna and the G 63 share similar exterior war paint and parallel interiors. Should those aforementioned parties turn into sleepovers, the Tirranna is equipped with a forward settee that transforms into a queen bed, as well as a separate shower and a small galley. Up top, the bow offers seating and loungers for up to 12; the back deck can accommodate another 10, in addition to eight seats behind the center console. The time has come to fire up those Mercury Racing 450R V-8 outboards. Jim Secord, Cigarette’s chief test driver, is gracefully guiding this 40,000-pound heavyweight out of the narrow Miami dock. “It may be 59 feet, but this is probably the easiest boat in our range to maneuver,” Secord says while giving quick bursts of the bow and stern thrusters in order to spin the Tirranna around on its axis. The swells are rolling in, but they’re no match for the Cigarette’s Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizer. This $100-grand option will save the day— and your margarita—should you ever host a cocktail soiree on board.

PRICE: $3.3 MILLION LENGTH: 59 FEET BEAM: 14 FEET DRAFT: 2 FEET, 8 INCHES POWER: 6 X MERCURY RACING 450R V-8 HORSEPOWER: 2,700 TOP SPEED: 80 MPH WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE IT’LL GIVE 25 OF YOUR FRIENDS THE THRILL RIDE OF THEIR LIVES.

Secord mashes the throttles forward, lifting the needle-like bow as we race from 50 to 60 to 70 mph. He indicates that 70 is the boat’s comfort zone, though they’ve recorded 80.5 on flat water. As you might expect with 2,700 hp, fuel economy isn’t the Cigarette’s best quality. With a 1,000-gallon tank, you’re looking at an Amex-card-melting $4,000 per fill-up. The good news is it will cover around 600 miles—or one round trip from Miami to Nassau, with ample fuel left over. But what’s most remarkable about the boat is the smoothness of its ride and how easily it slices through two-to-three footers. That, and its refinement. Even with all six Mercs thundering at full throttle, the only sound audible from behind the helm is the light roar of the wind. Of course, in keeping with the party-boat theme, there’s also a 29-speaker JL Audio Marine radio for those in want of a more raucous soundtrack.

taste

Back at the dock, I ask Cigarette Racing CEO Skip Braver about the most probable buyer he envisions for this one-of-a-kind superboat. “It’s likely to be a family guy who likes enjoying life with friends and family and will use it more as a day-boat for heading to lunch or hanging on the hook at the sandbar,” he shares. We’ll have to agree to disagree. To me, this Cigarette is all but ideal for those with the desire to sprint over to the Bahamas at warp speed, or roughly 80 mph, give or take. «

THE Dynamic

Duo

The day begins in earnest after breakfast for Danielle Norcross and her husband, Jason, who homeschool their three children: witty Elsa (9), spunky Emery (7), and silly Gavin (4). Danielle tackles the morning shift, while Jason spearheads afternoon projects so Danielle can work on Palm Beach Lately, the blog–turned– lifestyle company, she started in 2012 with her sister, Beth Aschenbach. Although Danielle’s constantly juggling projects—such as Palm Beach Lately’s collaboration with clothing brand Vineyard Vines—she keeps her kids and husband front of mind. “Our family and home are our foundation for life, so we invest a lot of time in them,” she says. For the Norcross bunch, Palm Beach is their playground. They sometimes venture “off campus” for lunch at Sant Ambroeus and after-school activities range from soccer and dance to swimming and mini-golfing—with Emery capturing memories on her Instamax camera. The occasional sleepover at The Colony, where Danielle and Beth created a Sisters Suite with Serena & Lily last year, breaks up their routine, which always involves lots of family and cousin time. Over at the Aschenbach residence, Grace (4) is up early after dreaming of the next batch of goodies she and her mom, Beth, will make thanks to inspiration from Kids Baking Championship. Baby Edie (7 months) is eager, as always, to be a part of the mix and come along for whatever excursion is on tap. Today it’s a bicycle ride along the Palm Beach Lake Trail before popping into La Muse, the Worth Avenue jewelry store their dad, Lawson, owns. On other days, the itinerary might include a stop at LoveShackFancy to make bracelets with the cousins or trips to Pizza Al Fresco so Grace can get her pasta fix. Regardless of the specifics, Beth abides by a mommy motto to always “go with the flow,” she says. “With kids, something is bound to pop up and change the plan.” This mantra even extends to their family dynamic, which is constantly evolving as Beth’s girls grow up and grow into their personalities.

THE Go-Getter

Molly Mele counts any day that doesn’t start before 7 a.m. as a big win. Her two boys, Johnny (5) and Archer (2), follow divergent circadian rhythms, with Archer opting for late nights and Johnny preferring early rises. For all their differences, however, the brothers share many qualities, such as boundless energy and a fondness for music. “Both kids love a good dance party,” notes Molly. After prepping her crew, Molly and the boys hit the road. With this group, the journey is just as fun as the destination. Carpool karaoke, featuring sing-alongs to hits by The Beatles and others, enlivens their drive to The Breakers, where they spend the afternoon playing in the waves, collecting seashells, and planning a family beach cleanup for the following weekend.

After some arts and crafts at home, they might meet dad, photographer Nick, at Coyo Taco, a casual taqueria in The Royal Poinciana Plaza where the boys can run around in the adjacent courtyard. As she remains engaged with her family, Molly is also earning a graduate degree in elementary education at Florida Atlantic University, with the goal of starting her own tutoring and literacy-assessment company. She hopes to infuse her passion for philanthropy into this endeavor, too, envisioning a volunteer component that would allow her to offer services to some of the area’s Title 1 schools and less-fortunate families at no cost. Adds Molly: “This plan is definitely in its infancy, but I am passionately looking forward to getting this all going.”

THE Fighter

Having fought for so many years to get pregnant and then watching her son, Fred, fight so hard when he was born at only 29 weeks, Christine Pressman needs only that first smile after the 16-month-old wakes up to jump-start her day. Wiping the remnants of fresh fruit puree off of Fred’s face, Christine, clad in a simple dress by Isabel Marant, reaches for a circa1990s soft nylon Prada purse she has converted into a diaper bag, and the family heads out for a walk over the bridge into Palm Beach to enjoy the public gardens. While Christine continues to pursue a career in real estate at Douglas Elliman, her mornings with Fred are a top priority. “Right now, everything is a new and fun adventure,” she says. “Palm Beach is full of so many gems to see and take children to.” Fred is a true socializer, schmoozing with people and dogs who greet him during his walk, and lovingly embracing his giant stuffed bear, which he believes is real, upon their return home. Christine describes her approach to parenting with husband Gene as relaxed and joyful. But the family’s current state, as well as Fred’s wonderful disposition, belies their son’s difficult entry into the world. Fred spent five months in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in New York City, where the Pressmans also reside. On his first Valentine’s Day, he met his “girlfriend,” Lucy, a fellow NICU resident. Though they’ve since graduated home, Lucy and Fred love to FaceTime as much as possible. “Both children get so excited to see each other,” remarks Christine.

THE Queen

Bee

When it comes to balancing life with her three daughters and husband, Todd, Brandie Herbst truly believes that teamwork makes the dream work. While she can never get her night-owl girls to go to sleep on time, she can always count on them to set and clear the dinner table— and to throw an impromptu dance party, fueled by a breakfast of Nutella pancakes and mixed berries. Brandie’s pint-sized girl squad stars rock princess Paisley (9), eclectic and confident Minty (8), and playful Capri (4). For her part, Brandie encourages her daughters to strive, both to the benefit of their family and to grow individually. “My parenting style is tender, tough, loving, and authentic,” she says. “I want my girls to be strong, self-sufficient, and true to themselves.” While her days with the girls are filled with excursions around the island, including bike rides and walks on the beach—dogs in tow—Brandie tries to keep up with her love of interior design as well. She takes on projects as time permits and also flexes that creative muscle through party planning and involvement in local charities such as Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center. Come evening, the Herbsts can be found dining at City Cellar—one of the restaurants comprising Todd’s Big Time Restaurant Group—or eating at home. Afterward, the entire family frequently piles onto the sofa to watch a movie. With three very vocal opinions to contend with, choosing a flick is never easy. But Brandie welcomes a certain amount of loving dissension within her troop, taking it as a sign that her mission to raise strong-willed girls is succeeding. «

INSIDE INSIGHT As COVID-19 spread throughout the United States, it brought with it a wave of restrictions on how we interact with one another. As everyone has adjusted to social distancing, there’s been a more fervent reliance on technology as a means of staying connected and a refocus on life welllived at home. Here, we present helpful advice and innovative tech tools that make it easier to foster a sense of well-being—mentally, emotionally, and physically—during times of crisis. BY MARY MURRAY WITH ABIGAIL DUFFY

N

o one has been immune to the impacts of the coronavirus. Whether you’re dealing with a job loss, a sick loved one, or the rescheduling of a milestone event, this pandemic has been a major source of anxiety. “There is so much uncertainty during global crises such as the recent coronavirus pandemic,” says Dr. Rachel Needle, a licensed psychologist and executive director of Whole Health Psychological Center in West

Palm Beach. “It is something we have never dealt with in our lifetime, and there is still so much unknown about the virus itself. This creates anxiety and a feeling of being unsafe.” When it comes to discussing the pandemic with children, Needle says open communication is paramount. “Ask them what they know, answer questions, share facts, and correct any misinformation using age-appropriate language. Model healthy coping and expression of feelings, and even tell them how you handle your stress.” She encourages parents to limit media exposure and to respond gently if a child seems upset or is acting out. During difficult times, it’s also important to speak positively to ourselves, employing affirmations that can reframe the situation and how we respond to it. Needle offers a few suggestions: “I am healthy today. I have control over my life. I am happy. I am at home with my family. I choose to be calm. I am at peace. I am strong and will persevere.” (wholehealthpsych.com)

STRESS RELIEVERS Dr. Rachel Needle outlines eight strategies to help mitigate anxiety

1

“Accept and acknowledge your negative emotions, without judgment. Don’t avoid them or they will get stronger. Practice mindfulness which is staying in the moment, on purpose, without judgment.”

2 3

“Structure your day with a set schedule and routines. They will be new routines. Plan activities and set goals.” “Practice physical distancing rather than social distancing. Schedule video conferencing calls with friends. Fitness instructors are doing online group classes, and Netflix has come out with a feature (netflixparty.com) where you can watch a movie with friends.”

4 5 6

“Take care of yourself. Get outside if you can, even go for a walk if that’s an option. Exercise. Boost your immunity by staying healthy.” “Shift your thinking. Let’s think about this as a time that can foster growth, resilience, and a new appreciation for life.” “Help others. Find small ways to give back, i.e. helping a family in need with groceries, checking in with elderly neighbors, or supporting local restaurants.”

INNER CALM

One way to practice mindfulness is to set aside time for meditation. Susie Levan, a South Florida–based author, meditation teacher, and life coach, has made two of her guided meditations available online at no cost. Entitled “Meditation for a Peaceful Heart” and “Meditation for Healing Stress,” Levan’s free meditations feature relaxing music by Grammy-nominated artist Steven Halpern. “Meditation is training your mind to focus and redirecting your thoughts,” Levan explains. “Meditation helps you feel grounded no matter what life throws your way. As we all meet the challenges of this moment, you will find strength and equanimity with meditation.” (gettingtoforgiveness.com)

HELPING OTHERS

Many Palm Beach County philanthropic organizations have risen to the challenges presented by the recent pandemic, resulting in numerous ways to give back. Feeding South Florida has an active COVID-19 Response Fund that helps to feed those impacted by the coronavirus. Additionally, the organization’s Palm Beach County branch is hosting sorting and packing volunteer opportunities at its Boynton Beach headquarters. (feedingsouthflorida.org/covid19) In response to the pandemic, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County has launched the Farm to Family initiative. To help farmers and families stay afloat, the organization has partnered with Kai-Kai Farm, Holman’s Harvest, Old School Bakery, and other local businesses to fill boxes with fresh produce and other food products. A $30 donation covers the cost of one box, which can feed a family of four for one week. (bgcpbc.org)

PBI: When it comes to the feng shui of a home office, how can you make the most of the energy within that room? Rollins: I think people feel better in edited, clutter-free, and clean spaces. Most of the time, productivity feels better when we are in a cozyfeeling but free-flowing space, with the ability to see around the overall space. I like to see who is entering and exiting the room around me, even if it’s just the dog. What are your top tips for eliminating clutter in an office? Touch it once and get rid of it, either filed or thrown away. As we become more digital, so much more can be digitally filed, eliminating the need for paper. Another thing is to select desig-

nated spaces for everything and adhere to using them, whether baskets, bins, or files. Take 10 minutes at the end of each day to clean spaces, reorganize, and plan for the next day. If someone doesn’t have a dedicated room for an office, where else could they set one up? People don’t always use their dining rooms daily, and they can easily do double duty as a library/ office. There’s already a table, so I advise skirting it and adding lamps, and there’s plenty of space for nearly concealed storage. A guest room can be quickly converted, or even consider taking over a closet within a space such as a guest room. California Closets and Ikea make modular systems that can be great options. What considerations do you make when it

comes to decorative pieces in a home office? It’s a personal decision, but something living is always nice and a good day brightener. Good lighting is key, [as is having] plenty of out-of-sight outlets, even if it’s just an extension cord power strip. I’m not an overhead-light lover and strongly prefer lighting from sconces, bookcase and art lighting, and lamps. Art, no matter where it is placed, should be reflective of the taste of the owner. Pieces that make you feel pleasantly comforted will always have a home.

FITNESS 2.0 As gyms close, many fitness fans have turned to online workouts to get in a sweat session at home. Franklin Antoian, a Delray Beach trainer and founder of iBodyFit, has long provided virtual workouts to his clients. Here, he provides words of advice for how to get motivated and be successful during at-home workouts. (ibodyfit.com)

1. Anything is better than nothing. Even a 15-minute treadmill walk or a quick body-weight workout each day can keep the weight off and your heart strong. 2. No equipment, no problem. Some of the best athletes train with just body weight. 3. Do something you enjoy. If you really do not like the treadmill, try jumping rope for cardio. 4. Mix it up. If you have always wanted to try yoga but are uncomfortable in a studio setting, try some yoga poses in the privacy of your home. 5. Create a gym circuit in your home. Structure a workout with 10 to 15 of your favorite at-home exercises using any equipment available—some resistance bands, dumbbells, or mini bands. Perform one set of each exercise for 60 seconds each. 6. Challenge yourself to stay motivated. Keep track of your workouts and aim to beat your reps, sets, or time every week or month. 7. Focus on your goals. Just because you are training at home doesn’t mean you should neglect your goals. If you would like toned arms, legs, abs, etc., be sure to include exercises that will train these muscle groups. 8. Don’t overdo it. Some body-weight or at-home exercises can be more challenging than gym exercises. Know your limits and err on the side of caution.

TRY THIS ELBOW PLANK WITH TOE TAP: From an elbow plank position, lift your right leg up as high as possible while keeping your leg straight. Lower and repeat using left leg.

SIDE LUNGE TO BALANCE: Step to your right, lower your body toward the floor by bending your right leg, push off your right leg, and balance on your left leg. Repeat on other side. HALF SQUAT/ARM RAISE: Bend your knees slightly, raise both arms above your head, arch your back, lower, and repeat. CROSSED-LEG CRUNCH: Lie flat on your back, bend your knees, lift your legs up, cross them, and perform a basic crunch. PUSH-UP TO STAR: From a push-up position, rotate your upper body to the right, and point your left arm toward the ceiling. Lower back to a push-up position and repeat on other side.

Heat olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Add minced onion and cook, stirring, until soft, about 4 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 2-4 minutes until golden brown. Increase heat to medium, add pureed tomatoes, and season lightly with kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld, about 1520 minutes. Remove pan from heat, add basil, and set aside. Meanwhile, bring water to a boil in a 5-quart pot and season with salt. Add spaghetti and cook, stirring occasionally, until about 2 minutes before tender. Check the cooking time on the pasta box; usually spaghetti takes 7-8 minutes for al dente. Once cooked, drain pasta, reserving 1/2 cup pastacooking water. Heat skillet over high heat. Stir in reserved pasta water to loosen sauce and bring to a boil. Add pasta and cook, stirring, until sauce coats pasta, about 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat. Add cheese and toss until it melts. Landscape architect David Font designed the home’s gardens, which are reminiscent of a seventeenth-century royal retreat with a modern twist. More than 50 varieties of native plants complement dramatic sculptures, like the piece on the right, that the homeowners purchased from the previous residents.

ome homes are mausoleums of “good taste,” while others are slaves to trends or pioneers of the digital age. The French Regency–style mansion of Edouard Louis and Elizabeth Anne de La Tour d’Auvergne Lauraguais manages to present as impressively grand, but boasts an underlying refinement and solidity that makes it appear as if it has harbored generations of tradition. Yet it wasn’t always this way. Only completed in 2004, the home, located in the upscale St. Andrews Country Club community in Boca Raton, sat empty for 10 years before the de La Tours purchased it. Gil Walsh Interiors worked with the couple over four years to renovate the interior, with the goal of merging Edouard and Elizabeth’s styles—he’s more classic, she’s more contemporary—into a harmonious union that reflects their emphasis on family as well as their taste. The result is an estate that exemplifies the same subdued, timeless elegance that also defines the couple. “We really fell in love with the architecture of the house,” says Elizabeth. “We already lived in St. Andrews and wanted a bigger lot. We thought this house had a lot of potential, but it [had] totally different decor inside. We decided if we did this, we’d have to do a lot of work.” Elizabeth is no stranger to renovation, having redesigned most of the homes she and Edouard have lived in, and enjoys the process. The goal was to tone down the bright gold accents, open up the flow, and declutter the entire interior to suit their lifestyle. “The home was French Regency on the outside but wasn’t really speaking French on the inside; it was more Hollywoodextravagant,” explains Elizabeth. Edouard likens it to environs conducive to large-scale business entertaining rather than family living. “There was a huge built-in bar along one wall of the living room, with a bust of Caesar,” he recalls. The bright red walls also struck a discordant note. “This wasn’t a house for reds,” says Elizabeth. “I wanted a soft color palette.” The couple sought a richly layered, sophisticated aesthetic that would showcase their extensive art collection and a cu-

As exemplified in the foyer (left and above) and living room (below), much of the design was based on antique Persian rugs that the Gil Walsh Interiors team purchased specially for each room. During the process, they brought in many options, sourcing inventory from all over the country, including the Doris Leslie Blau and Nazmiyal Collection in New York City.

rated selection of oriental carpets, but also exude a comfortable family vibe. For help gutting and refashioning the entire interior, they engaged Walsh, well-known for uniting various design penchants, and her senior designer, Ashleigh Wilson. By mutual agreement, Elizabeth took the lead on the interior. “She did everything, with the help of Ashleigh and Gil,” says Edouard. “I know what he likes, and we wanted to do a fusion of both our styles,” says Elizabeth. “Ed [is] more traditional. I can be more daring, and I needed someone who can mix styles.” Over the course of several meetings, Wilson distilled the couple’s tastes down to their essence, resulting in a design that adheres to the

architectural integrity of the home but with a more classic, clean look. “They don’t like a lot of clutter,” Wilson explains. “They also had definite ideas, which simplified the process.” For Edouard, the home’s French architecture felt reminiscent of his family’s residence in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he grew up. The couple has lived in Florida for most of their married life and came to St. Andrews from Weston because it was a more convenient location for their children’s 58

activities and because Edouard loves to golf. They like it so much that they’ve now owned four homes there. “St. Andrews is the place,” he says. “[It has] a little bit of everything, except the ocean.” As with any major renovation, the couple encountered some unique challenges. One was the cabinetry in the gallery off the family room, where they wanted to display a collection of Han Dynasty–era Chinese warriors and porcelain. “I removed the guts of the cabinetry and redesigned it, then completely refinished it,” says Wilson. The Chinese warriors had not been out of their crates in eight years because the couple had no place to feature them in their former home. “We were concerned about the fragility,” Wilson continues. “I had an art expert open the box so I could measure them and make sure the new design would accommodate them. Then I added special lighting behind them and had the art expert place them on the shelves.”

4/2/20 11:20 AM

Moving on to the dining room, Elizabeth says they changed the decor but left much of the room intact, even purchasing the table and chairs from the home’s previous owners. “The hardest part for me and for Gil was the color issue,” she adds. “I like muted colors, blues, and some deep reds. If you look at the carpet, it can just look all beige.” Walsh and Wilson solved the issue by maintaining the subdued palette but picking out accent colors to bring drama to the room. “There’s beauty in contrasts, and if you keep furnishings and colors in contrast it creates an artistic composition and is the secret to really good design,” says Walsh. “We pulled minor colors from the oriental carpets and put [them] on the walls and then pulled in pops of color from the carpet. The carpet looks mostly beige and gray, but there are small bits of russet or blue that we incorporated into other elements in the room.” Being that this is a family home, Edouard and Elizabeth also sought input from their two grown sons for the upstairs bedrooms. “It’s part of the process of understanding the family,” Wilson notes. “Who likes modern and who likes classic? One son, who was more artistic, also needed the room to function with a work space able to accommodate his large

computers.” She extended the desk area with built-in cabinets and shelves that look like they’ve always been there. The couple also requested a bedroom to be decorated in sweet pinks for their two granddaughters. Outside, on a tour of the gardens, Edouard takes the lead, rambling along paved pathways punctuated with dramatic sculptures purchased from the former owners and potted trees strategically placed to lead visitors on a pleasant stroll. “Ed loves his gardens,” says Elizabeth, as Edouard names off a few of the 50 species of native trees and plants. Huge pots of purple bougainvillea line the walkway to a separate building called a folly, which was reconfigured into an office. Further on, with nary a neighbor’s house to obstruct the peaceful scene, Edouard points out gardenias, a blood orange tree, three Poinciana trees that provide flaming color in the summer, and three gumbo limbo trees, one of which was upended during Hurricane Irma in 2017 and subsequently righted with a crane. Adjacent to the pool, a shaded area with a built-in barbecue and casual seating provides “a nice place to have a cup of coffee in the morning,” says Elizabeth. swathed in plush blankets where the dogs love to curl up, Elizabeth and Edouard settle in and reflect on the project. “If I had to say I had a favorite room, it would probably be this one,” says Elizabeth. “I like to sit here and look at the art and just feel it. I can’t describe it very well, but it’s just peaceful. Each piece of art has a different feel for me, and when I look at each one, I remember the very first time I saw it. I don’t really look at the artist—if a piece speaks to me, I buy it. I think that’s the beauty of art. It’s not the price and it’s not the artist; it’s if I can communicate with it.” Elizabeth says she loves to “fix” homes. “It’s becoming a hobby, but this one has been the most exciting because it showed the biggest change. When you see the house from the outside, it’s very dramatic. Some people see it as a castle, but we don’t see it that way. This is a home to be lived in, not a showcase. It’s a big house, but at the same time it’s cozy and easy to navigate.” The soft color scheme reflects “the way we think we are,” she adds. “We are not flashy; we’re very low-profile. We wake up in the morning and are happy here.” «

iffany Marks Isaacs and Cori Lee Seaberg are close friends who share core values and have cultivated a wide variety of pals in Palm Beach, New York City, and the Hamptons. The ladies frequently choreograph the good life with their husbands, Simon Isaacs and Jeffrey Berman, by engaging—over a glass of fine wine or Champagne—a circle of peers with diverse interests and common goals that encompass a fondness for sumptuous food, healthy living, and invigorating discussion. “I love bringing different people together for interesting conversations,” says Tiffany, CEO of Lana Marks, the fashionable handbag and accessories company founded by her mother, Lana Marks, the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa. “We are all busy with work and family, but we like to lead a balanced life.” Cori is a cofounder and partner of Out East, a New York–based wine and lifestyle company with operations in Provence and Champagne, France, and a name inspired by the vernacular reference to the Hamptons. Despite leading demanding professional lives, Cori and her husband, Jeffrey, general partner at the real estate technology venture capital firm Camber Creek, prioritize carving out time for

revelry and relaxation, exemplifying Out East’s state-of-mind motto: “You can be ‘Out East’ anywhere.” In the same vein, Tiffany and Cori recently hosted a festive cocktail party with the goal of sampling Out East’s Côtes de Provence rosé and introducing the brand’s first Champagne, À L’Est, a brut produced in Épernay, France. Together with their husbands, the women welcomed an eclectic group of 20 guests into the Isaacses’ art-filled West Palm Beach home, which had been decorated to evoke a Provençal theme. “We like to share wine with different people, enjoy their company, and explore new situations,” says Cori, who has formed Out East partnerships with environmental and animal-welfare organizations such as the Surfrider Foundation, Project Zero, and Animal Rescue Fund. “It’s all about community and meeting new friends to mix with our general Out East–minded family.” Cori and her business partner, Out East cofounder Patrick Mitchell, travel to France annually to meet with their winemakers and 64 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

participate in harvest and bottling activities. They launched the Champagne in September, more than a year after the release of the rosé. The Out East brand is now available in several states, including Florida, New York, and Texas, as well as in Dubai. “I love having our own wines and learning the history and heritage,” says Cori. “We aim to continue being socially responsible as we grow.” To illustrate the party’s theme, Tiffany and Cori worked with Robin Bergland of Renny & Reed on the lovely floral arrangements. The displays featured olive branches, hydrangeas, garden roses, Italian ranunculus, vegetables, and berries. “I used hues of pinks and reds to match the colors of the house and to coordinate with the French-hillside-winery vibe where rosé wine originates,” says Bergland. Even though the hostesses are originally from different areas, they both have backgrounds in luxury fashion and practice an entertaining philosophy steeped in extensive preplanning. Tiffany was raised in Palm Beach and has previously lived in Atlanta, Miami, New York, and London, while Cori is a Southern belle from Little Rock, Arkansas. “We come from different parts of the world yet have similar taste and styles,” says Tiffany. “We are both detail-oriented and plan ahead so that our entertaining is effortless and we can spend time with our guests.”

062_ISAAC_0520-4.indd 65

When she was growing up, Tiffany’s parents often threw dinner parties for friends and business associates. “Mom and I differ in style,” says Tiffany. “She is more formal than I am, yet I learned a lot from her elegant, tasteful, and thoughtful presentations.” Cori’s former career in high-end retail— including wholesale roles with Christian Dior Couture, Chloé, and Gucci—informed her acu-

men for quality, aesthetics, and presentation, which she handily translates to entertaining. She, too, absorbed cues from her mother’s attentive hospitality. “Tiffany is welcoming and inviting, and I grew up with that in my own home,” she says. “My mother always displayed freshly cut flowers and made sure guests had what they needed [to feel] comfortable. I also remember her beautiful presentations, like PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY 2020

And in great Southern style, she made me write thank-you notes.” As guests arrived at the Isaacs home, they were able to view pieces from Simon’s modern art collection, which includes a pink sculpture by Italian artist Fidia Falaschetti, Nathan Coe photography, and a blue and yellow Roy Lichtenstein. “Tiffany does about 95 percent of everything when we entertain,” says London-bred Simon, owner of Simon Isaacs Real Estate. “I do the alcohol. Did I mention that I love the Out East rosé because it is light, non-acidic, and goes down well?” Jeffrey agrees that a party is only as good as its

Champagne, and that he, too, refers to his wife when it comes to fetes. “I am a support system for Cori in everything we do, including entertaining, which we enjoy a great deal in Manhattan and in the Hamptons, where we pack our homes to the gills,” he says. Attendees chatted with the hosting couples and met new friends while sipping their Out East beverages. “I love the taste of the rosé, which is dry, light, and refreshing,” says Carling Pinckney, who grew up in Palm Beach and now serves as business development manager for Gunster, a corporate law firm. “Coming to Tiffany and Simon’s house is great because they make me feel like I am part of the family.”

Pinckney, her husband, Tom, a private wealth manager, and the rest of the crowd discussed work, charity functions, travel plans, and family while munching on appetizers crafted to emulate an evening in Provence. Nosh Catering displayed some goodies atop a tempting grazing table, a mix-and-match of charcuterie and cheeses such as St. André triple crème from France, Port Salut, Morbier, aged Manchego, Tillamook extra sharp cheddar, and Rogue Creamery’s Smokey Blue. The array was augmented with fruit, crudités, and assorted Italian breads, crostini, and crisps. Passed 66

After connecting with friends old and new, and drinking in the art, food, and fine wine, the crowd began saying their goodbyes—fully sated by friendships within a distinguished com-

munity of young couples who share in each other’s success and generosity. “This spectacular evening together with the divine dining centerpiece is a fitting reflection of Tiffany and Simon’s ‘wow’ factor,” says Christina Macfarland, a great-great-granddaughter of Henry Morrison Flagler and a board member of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. “They are overflowing and sparkling with imagination, beauty, and joy. As a couple, they are a perfect pairing with Cori and Jeffrey and all that Out East aims to conjure up and celebrate.” « PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY 2020

CAJUN Craving Fans of New Orleans’ signature Cajun and Creole dishes no longer need to travel to get their fix. Located at Downtown Palm Beach Gardens, Voodoo Bayou delivers an authentic take on the city’s cuisine, infused with a regional Southern touch and playful riffs. “We thought a lot about what’s missing in the area and did strenuous research in New Orleans,” says executive chef Peter Bartalini. “The menu represents owner Curtis Peery’s favorite dishes from the area. We kept it mostly traditional but put a twist on a few things.” Patrons will recognize plates

like the shrimp and crawfish étouffée, oyster po’boy, and jambalaya. Voodoo Bayou’s shrimp and grits, however, receive an indulgent update with the addition of smoked pork belly, crispy leeks, and a bacon bourbon beurre blanc. And, cocktails like the Frozen Bourbon Milk Punch (akin to a vanilla milkshake, but better) ameliorate Bartalini’s pillowy beignets—deep-fried choux pastries doused in powdered sugar. Voodoo Bayou, a sister restaurant to Calaveras Cantina, offers curbside pickup and delivery. (voodoo bayous.com) —Liz Petoniak

WAKE-UP CALL Coffee gives us the superpowers we need to forge through the day. Visit these local roasters and cafés for a quality cup, whether you prefer to brew at home or order to go. —Mark Spivak and L.P.

Family-owned since 2017, Perk combines a healthy food menu (think vegan dishes, yogurt bowls, wraps, and hummus flatbreads) with coffee from nearby Pumphouse Coffee Roasters. It also serves matcha, kombucha on tap, and specialty lattes such as collagen and honey lavender. Organic wine and local craft beers round out the offerings. Originally from Los Angeles, the owners describe their venture as “a twist on our take of a Californian-Floridian coffee shop and local eatery.” Takeout available. (perkcoffeetequesta.com)

Brothers Christian and Alex La Clainche view their role as similar to that of craft brewers: They’re “breaking the rules and using innovative techniques” to deliver the very best from their hand-selected, single-origin coffees, currently available online for purchase. The aromas and flavors fan out from their Jupiter-based roasting facility to a wide range of retailers and cafés throughout Palm Beach and Martin counties. In addition, the brothers’ coffee is poured at Cones and Coffee in Jupiter for grab-and-go. Their motto? “If you hate bad coffee, we should be friends.” (pumphousecoffeeroasters.com)

LA BOULANGERIE BOUL’MICH, Boca Raton

Boul’Mich, the nickname given to Boulevard St. Michel in Paris’ Latin Quarter, represents the cultural melting pot that permeates this addition to the Town Center at Boca Raton. The Miami-based chain bills itself as a French café with Latin flair, complete with a menu that bridges European and South American favorites. Croque madame and pain perdu coexist with guava and cheese croissants and chorizo empanadas, while the coffee will satisfy international cravings. Unique beverages like the Bombon, which layers condensed milk, espresso, and foam, and the decadent Nutccino, a Nutella-flavored cappuccino with the hazelnut-cocoa spread decorating the rim, make La Boulangerie Boul’Mich a standout. I NEED COFFEE, Jupiter Do good chefs make good coffee? Chef David Schroeder of Lake Park’s Brick & Barrel has partnered with childhood friend Brian Stutz to put that question to the test. The beans are from Crux Coffee, the pastries are from Aioli Bakery, and the mugs are produced by Avenue Pottery. Stutz specializes in pour-over coffee, a three-minute process designed to deliver the greatest flavor possible. The name comes from Schroeder’s professed mantra: “I have two young boys at home … I always need coffee.” Delivery and takeout available. (ineedcoffeejupiter.com)

OCEANA COFFEE, Tequesta When Scott Angelo moved to Jupiter, he discovered how hard it was to get coffee that lived up to his standards. Along with his wife, Amy, he founded Oceana Coffee in 2009. All of their specialty, fair-trade, and organic beans are roasted to order in small batches; although they roast more than 50,000 pounds each year, inventory remains low and the beans are consistently fresh. They work closely with wholesale partners to create custom blends, and they focus on educating both staff and consumers about the glories of a well-made cup. Order coffee beans, ground coffee, coffee and espresso beverages, and breakfast and lunch bites to go online. (oceanacoffee.com)

PAPICHULO TACOS Order takeout from this bright spot on U.S. 1 to jump-start your own Cinco de Mayo fiesta. Head chef Carlos Sanchez, a native Californian, makes his own tortillas and smokes his meats in-house in order to bring even more authenticity to his Bajastyle street food. While he’s been known to get creative with taco fillings (he’s served duck, short rib, coconut shrimp, and alligator, to name a few), his takes on the classics, like carne asada with chimichurri sauce, queso fresco, sweet peppers, and radish, are just as tantalizing. TO TRY EL FOGONCITO This family-owned and -operated hidden gem serves authentic Mexican recipes that have been passed down for generations. In the kitchen, Gabriel and Margarita Montes make everything from scratch daily, including tacos, tamales, and slow-cooked Mexican stews on the weekends. El Fogoncito, which translates to “the little fire,” is also renowned for its signature dish, molcajete azteca: chorizo, veggies, grilled cactus, ranchero beans, and green salsa served in a lava rock and topped with queso fresco and onions. The best warm-weather cocktails follow the low-proof trend of the moment. Composed of top-quality ingredients and featuring minimal alcohol, they are classics that never seem to go out of style. FRENCH SPRITZ: Move over, Aperol spritz, because this supercharged version of the St-Germain cocktail is poised to surpass you in popularity. Combine club soda, Champagne or sparkling wine, and St-Germain with Suze, a French liqueur distilled from macerated gentian roots. PIMM’S CUP: Invented in 1820s London, Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is a 25-percent gin-based liqueur infused with a secret blend of herbs and citrus. Mixed with club soda, Sprite, or English lemonade, it’s usually served with a bouquet of garnishes: apples, cucumbers, oranges, lemons, strawberries, and mint. Wimbledon attendees consume 80,000 pints each year at the annual tennis tournament, and it tastes just as good on your front porch. NEGRONI SBAGLIATO: Sbagliato means “mistake,” and legend has it this drink came about when a bartender reached for a bottle of Spumante instead of gin. Proceed as you would for a Negroni (equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, and sparkling wine in place of gin) and you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing cocktail and a clear head. MICHELADA: For the ultimate beertail, combine a 12-ounce Mexican beer with the juice of two limes, two teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, two teaspoons of Tabasco, a teaspoon of Maggi (if you can find it), ice, and coarse salt. Add your favorite tomato-based juice (V-8, Clamato, etc.) to taste. Rim the glass with salt as you would for a margarita. The pinch of salt in the drink itself will ensure balance. DIPLOMAT: For the essence of simplicity, mix two parts dry vermouth with one part sweet, and add dashes of maraschino liqueur and orange bitters. The trick is to only use bottles from the top shelf: Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth, Dolin or Noilly Prat Original Dry, and Luxardo maraschino. Top it off with club soda for a variation called the Addington.

3/31/20 12:36 PM

SANGRIA: If you’ve only had lousy sangria, rest assured it was made with lousy ingredients. A foolproof formula includes one bottle of decent Rioja (Crianza is fine), one cup brandy, one cup Cointreau or triple sec, one cup orange juice, one cup lemon juice, and club soda to taste. Marinate your favorite fruits in the mixture for the better part of a day. Those who prefer white wine can use a Spanish vino from Rueda or Jumilla. For something with a boozier kick, the best summer libations are the mojito, Bee’s Knees, mint julep, and paloma. Consider the Martinez as a middle ground. This nineteenth-century forerunner of the martini follows the pre-Prohibition practice of de-emphasizing the main spirit in favor of the supporting ingredients. Use an ounce of gin (preferably Old Tom), an ounce of sweet vermouth, and dashes of Curaçao (or maraschino) and bitters; think of it as a Manhattan with gin in place of whiskey. « TKTR=t=ñ=QKTRKéÇÑ===N===NNLONLOMNV===OWPSWMM=mj

DESIGN

When introduced to this project in Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, Barbara Brickell, principal of Barbara Brickell Designs, was confronted with an uninspired outdoor space that juxtaposed neutral tile flooring against expansive and plain exterior walls. Brickell knew this would never work for her clients, given their Caribbean roots, love of whimsical colors, and penchant for a modern contemporary style. By installing artificial grass in a geometric pattern, Brickell brought warmth and dimension to what had been a cold, flat area. Additionally, by echoing the green of the golf course behind the home, she immediately increased the perceived size of the backyard. The most distinctive features are the two works of art adorning the walls. While many avoid outdoor art because of potential weather issues, these pieces, one made of metal and the other of ceramic tile, are designed to withstand the elements—proving you don’t have to speak in a monotone when using your outside voice. BALANCE By Liza Grant Smith

WELLNESS

BUZZ Worthy When it comes to health advantages, raw honey is the bee’s knees. In contrast to the honey you may find on grocery store shelves, raw honey is unfiltered, unheated, and unprocessed, which preserves all its enzymes, amino acids, and pollen. As a result, it is naturally antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory and can be used for a host of natural medicinal purposes. Some seasonal-allergy sufferers utilize raw, locally cultivated honey in an attempt to become less sensitive to the pollen they are inhaling in their own backyards. And while drinking hot tea or warm water with lemon and honey is an age-old—and effective—remedy for sore throats, using honey as a cough suppressant has begun to gain traction. Richard and Wendy Spinale have found success and personal satisfaction from introducing people to the power of raw honey with their company, Bee Unique Everything Honey & More. Their blended raw honeys offer extra boosts thanks to the addition of hive byproducts royal jelly, propolis, and bee pollen (to ramp up the antioxidant and antiviral oomph) and natural powerhouses like turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon. BALANCE TOP TIPS

PLAY IT SAFE After the tragic drowning death of their 2-year-old son, Jake, South Florida parents Keri and Roarke Morrison created the Live Lake Jake Foundation to raise awareness for childhood drowning prevention, provide self-rescue swim lesson scholarships, and offer financial and emotional support for families who have lost someone to drowning. With drowning being one of the leading causes of injuryrelated deaths for children aged 1 to 14, the foundation offers these safe swim tips for summertime pool sessions:

Each May, the Live Like Jake Foundation hosts its annual 5K run/walk. Check with the nonprofit for updates.

Keri, Roarke, Julia, and Josie Morrison

• Stay vigilant when a child is near water. Drowning happens when there is a lapse (not lack) in supervision. • Designate a water watcher. This can be done in 15-minute shifts, so there are always eyes on the water. • Install a pool fence that is 4 to 6 feet tall and has a self-latching and selfclosing gate.

• Erase all temptation of entering the water. Remove all pool toys when the pool isn’t in use and move poolside furniture that smaller children could climb on. • All caregivers should learn CPR. If there is an emergency, you will be skilled in what to do and can move quickly. • Remove dog doors that could be easy exits for small children. • Add alarms that will sound when doors or windows are opened and when the child touches water. • Swim lessons—even for infants—can serve as an added layer of protection and save children’s lives. • Most importantly, if a child is missing, always check the water first. PAMPER

TAKE A BREATHER There’s nothing like going for a walk in clean mountain air for invigoration. Now, thanks to the Pure Air Bubble, the walking part is not necessary. Guests at North Palm Beach’s Wellness Jar can take a bubble nap (sleeping is optional) in a zero-gravity chair in an atmosphere where they can breathe 99.995 percent pure air. In contrast to pure oxygen, pure air is composed of 78-percent nitrogen, 21-percent oxygen, and 1-percent other components—similar to the air you breathe outside but without the impurities, pollutants, and allergic agents. “Breathing in our Pure Air Bubble not only feels great, it’s beneficial for your lungs,” says Dr. Bonnie Gasquet, Wellness Jar’s medical director. “It helps the airways of your lungs to dilate 96

more fully and improves their cleansing action. And, much like exercising releases feel-good endorphins, the same thing happens when you are breathing in really fresh air. If you’re feeling especially stressed or nervous, taking in a few breaths of fresh air may leave you feeling much more refreshed and relaxed than you were before. In contrast, breathing in stale air will not supply your body with enough oxygen to keep your cells fueled and functioning properly.” Whether you opt for a stand-alone treatment to relax with the massage and warming function of the chair, or as an add-on to one of the medical spa’s IV therapies, the experience is yours to create. Try it weekly or whenever you’re feeling sluggish. (wellnessjar.com)
