FROM THE EDITOR
“The road is life,” American novelist Jack Kerouac once said. Anyone who’s ever gone on a significant road trip knows this is true. I had my moment in the ’90s, traveling across Africa in a beat-up truck. I was a backpacker, so I didn’t mind such inconveniences as sleeping in tents on the roadside, improvised meals (I reached culinary bottom when I ate, in the absence of anything else, an onion sandwich), and getting stuck in the mud in driving rain. There were far greater things: an encounter with a silverback in the forested wilds of Uganda, a luminous sunset over the vast plains of the Amboseli, feeling the mist of Victoria Falls from the precarious seat of an ultralight. Though the world has changed and some of those experiences are not repeatable (tent on roadside = bad idea), this five-month-long journey opened my eyes to the infinite possibilities of the road. Just as full of the promise of discovery, and considerably more luxurious, is the “Road Trip” we propose on page 48. This feature has become a summer tradition, and its latest iteration will take you to exciting destinations like Nashville, Tennessee, where you can fulfill a bucket-list wish with a live concert at the Grand Ole Opry; to Highlands, North Carolina, where the epic mountain views share top billing with the burgeoning epicurean scene; and to historic Winter Park, Florida, the refined college town that’s also home to priceless Louis Comfort Tiffany treasures. If anyone can appreciate the rigors and rewards of life on the road, it’s Hannah Selleck. This month’s cover star, the daughter of actors Tom Selleck and Jillie Mack, is a professional equestrian who travels the world to compete. In the winter, Hannah joins the ranks of the top riders showing at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, and she’s become a fixture not only in the horse circuit but also around Palm Beach. Read all about her equestrian lifestyle, dedication, and work ethic, for which she credits her famous parents, in “Riding High” on page 42. Wherever the road takes you this summer, stay mindful and present. The journey will be all the more memorable.

Tired of traffic? Rise above it all by taking to the skies… and the seas. Tropic Ocean Airways—a seaplane charter company offering private flights, scheduled trips, and dock-to-yacht services—turns bodies of water into runways, making it easy to fly south to Miami or east to the Bahamas in style. The amphibious seaplanes can land on nearly any runway or protected harbor, from Palm Beach Inter-
national Airport to the waterfront outside your home to direct yacht pickup. Whether you opt to island hop between remote Caribbean locales or fly a few hundred feet above the bumper-tobumper congestion on I-95, Tropic Ocean Airways gives travelers the freedom to roam on their own terms. Weekend getaways to South Beach will never be the same. (flytropic.com) PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2019

INSIDER GAME ON
Golf Croquet 101 The National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach has expanded its summer golf croquet league to make room for more participants. Five weeks of play for teams of family, friends, and coworkers begins July 8. Golf croquet is the easiest version of the sport to learn, so beginners are welcome, and the summer league keeps it light with creative team names, fun hats, and matching attire. Here, PBI shares the basics so you can shine at the awards ceremony and the lobster dinner scheduled for August 13. (croquetnational.com) HOW TO PLAY Team ball colors are either blue and black or red and yellow. Order of play—visible on the peg in the center of the court—is dictated by the color of the balls. The game begins in the fourth corner, and players try to hit their ball into scoring position while the opposing team works to hit their balls out of scoring position. The first team to score seven points wins. PRO TIPS Strategize to score two wickets with one ball in successive turns, or to get an opponent’s ball out of the jaws
GOLF CROQUET
of a contested wicket. If you really want to impress the audience, practice your jump shot and score by hitting your ball over an opponent’s ball. CODE OF CONDUCT In keeping with long-standing tradition, players should wear white. Heels of any kind are discouraged. Despite the competitive nature of the game, genteel behavior is required on the green at all times. Players should be clever but are expected to call faults on themselves if they misstrike their ball. In croquet, good sportsmanship is as important as winning.
DICTIONARY ONLY SPECTATING IF YOU ARRIVE TO WATCH AFTER A GAME HAS STARTED, YOU MAY ASK ONE OF THE PLAYERS FOR THE SCORE BETWEEN SHOTS. DRINKS ARE SERVED TO SPECTATORS AND PLAYERS ALIKE.
BLOB: Accidentally failing a wicket and landing in the jaws. FIRST COLORS: The traditional colors used in croquet (blue, red, black, yellow). JAWS: Area of the wicket between the uprights. JUMP SHOT: A shot where the ball is hit hard into the ground, causing it to jump up, usually over another ball to score a difficult angled wicket. MALLET: Used to hit the balls; typically 36 inches long. STAKE: The most common name for the peg in the middle of the six-wicket court or on either end of the nine-wicket or backyard court. WICKETS: The metal or wire openings set in the lawn through which points are made; referred to as hoops in Commonwealth countries.
CANDY CRUSH
A world of pure imagination awaits behind the bright yellow and purple walls of West Palm Beach’s Bulk Candy Store. Family-owned and -run for more than 25 years, the store’s most recent addition is a six-room display depicting the evolution of candy, from ancient Egypt’s quest for honey to today’s mass-produced gummies. Visitors can explore it all on 40-minute guided tours held weekdays and Saturdays. Afterward, attendees can shop and taste a variety of candies and more than 50 kinds of gourmet popcorn in flavors like Jolly Rancher, dill pickle, and pizza (surprisingly good). Pricing for the tour begins at $8.95 and reservations are required. Kids in search of a sugar rush and adults who appreciate nostalgic penny candy and global goodies will enjoy the visit equally. FASHION on the Fly After a near-miss involving a baggage claim delay and a connecting flight, Bethany Sharp and her husband, pro racecar driver Scott Sharp, vowed to stick to carry-ons for their frequent travels. This decision brought Sharp’s passion for pairing every event with the perfect outfit to a halt. As a result, she began planning to have her trip wardrobes waiting for her upon arrival. Soon, Lady Jetset, a travel concierge service that rents high-end designer wear, was born.
ANDREA GRAEVE PHOTOGRAPHY
Bethany Sharp, pictured below with her husband, Scott, and daughters, Selah and London
“We ship your travel wardrobe to your destination ahead of time so you can skip the hassle of packing and hauling it all with you,” explains Sharp, a resident of North Palm Beach. “I like to say it’s the Uber Black of shopping and packing. It’s not for the classic black dress that does make sense to buy, keep, and wear again—it’s the fabulous trending ruffle gown that makes everyone in the room do a double take. What makes wearing that incredible dress on vacation even better is being able to leave it hanging in your closet for someone else to dry clean and ship back.” Lady Jetset operates in a similar fashion to other rental wardrobe companies by allowing users to make selections from an online catalogue. And the service works for more than just travel getaways; Lady Jetset can dress you for nine days in Fiji or do same-day delivery in Florida for a one-night look. (ladyjetset.com)
Q&A: PHILIP NICOZISIS
AROUND THE WORLD After a yearlong odyssey to 12 cities across four continents, accompanied by 48 others in his “tramily” (traveling family), vegan evangelist and real-estate-guru-turned-digital-nomad Philip Nicozisis returned to Palm Beach with stories to tell. He penned Have Laptop, Will Travel, a memoir being cast as the male version of Eat, Pray, Love. PBI caught up with Nicozisis for insight into his bucket-listing abroad. (havelaptopwilltravel.co) PBI: What is a digital nomad? Nicozisis: A digital nomad is a locationindependent professional who can run [his or her] business from a smart phone or laptop. As long as there’s WiFi, [he or she] can be anywhere in the world performing work duties. The idea is that work and travel don’t have to be separate; a digital nomad can do both at the same time. The company Remote Year organizes teams of digital nomads to travel together. 22
What was it like sticking to a vegan diet while traveling? Eating vegan around the world was easy. I used the HappyCow app—which is like Yelp for vegans—to find vegan restaurants. The spices of India and Thailand are so savory. The fresh greens and exotic fruits of South America are unparalleled. The colorful root vegetables of Japan, and the way they artfully present the plate, are haunting me to go back. Everywhere around the world, the vegan
trend is catching on. And it’s more than a trend; it’s not going to go away. Did you always plan to write a book? From the beginning of the trip, my mom kept encouraging me to write a book. About halfway through my journey, it occurred to me that my travel experience was a story that should be told. I didn’t expect it to become an international bestseller, but it’s striking a chord in people. What’s personal is universal.
Philip Nicozisis ran his real estate business remotely while traveling.

Seasonal getaways require more than a cheerful wardrobe—they also demand an equally fun bag to carry it all from point A to point B. Designer Christian Louboutin knows this all too well, and once again released a limited-edition traveler inspired by his worldwide quest to discover unique crafting traditions. This year, he found himself in Portugal, energized by
the sun-drenched coastal towns and the brightly painted streets of Lisbon. As a result, the Portugaba handwoven artisanal travel tote ($1,990) employs time-honored techniques from local artists and features playful embellishments, embossing, and beads that nod to the country’s affinity for colorful ceramic tiles. Turn the page for more exotic picks.

Experience central China’s natural and man-made marvels aboard the SANCTUARY YANGZI EXPLORER By Paul Rubio

rom the Amazon to the Irrawaddy, upscale river cruising is opening access to locales once limited to backpackers willing to rough it off the beaten path. In China, the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer fills this niche, presenting a luxury-spiked voyage through the most scenic stretch of the 3,915-mile Yangtze River, the longest in Asia. Between the port cities of Yichang and Chongqing, the all-balcony, 38-cabin, 24-suite vessel snakes through the narrow canyons and mountainous splendor of central China’s Three Gorges. And whether choosing the three-night itinerary upstream or the fournight itinerary downstream, both the destinations and the journey leave lasting impressions. Throughout it all, travelers are exposed to the striking contrasts of today’s China—the good and the bad. Start with an excursion to the Three Gorges Dam Project near Yichang. The world’s largest hydroelectric power structure and its turbine, lock, and ship-lift excess is an

engineering wonder that makes the Hoover Dam look like child’s play. However, between construction and reservoir flooding, it has displaced 1.3 million people, forever altering the physical, cultural, and ecological landscapes of central China. This change is most palpable when ogling the juxtaposition of drab, Tetris-stacked monoliths comprising “new cities” against the sparkling bridges connecting both sides of the Yangtze. On an excursion along the Shennong Stream, a smaller ferryboat ventures deep into Avatar-like scenery, where high among the mist-shrouded limestone cliffs lie hanging coffins of the Tujia people, an ethnic minority that calls this region home. A traditional sampan (open-air wooden boat) ride follows, led by the last generation of local fishermen who delight through song and storytelling in hopes of keeping their customs alive. Another day, cruisegoers are privy to a guided market tour in Fuling—try a hundred-year egg, if you dare—succeeded by a visit to a national library for a heritage-rich afternoon. Look forward to tea ceremonies, cal34
ligraphy demonstrations, the sounds of the Chinese zither, and bian lian (facechanging) performances that reflect a China of yore. The journey, too, mirrors a theme of contrasts. With the largest room product on the river and a trustedbrand backing, the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer is regarded as the most luxurious cruise on the China market. The ship was even dry docked in 2017 for a refurbishment to reflect modern Chinese design with textiles, artwork, and furnishings sourced from area vendors. While the refresh is most visible in the guest rooms and dining room, worn hallways, paint-chipped exteriors, and several dowdy common spaces reveal an incomplete facelift. Not to say this isn’t the finest ship on the Yangtze—it is. But, it’s nowhere near the league of the high-end river cruise products found in Europe, the Amazon, or the

Mekong, so set expectations accordingly. In addition, the ship caters mainly to Chinese tourists, most of whom have booked on an à la carte basis. This can create some confusion for both staff and passengers who’ve reserved sailings marketed through the United States and Europe in which all meals, beverages, and excursions are included. What the ship sometimes lacks in overall finesse, it makes up for with onboard programming. Rise and shine daily to tai chi lessons, make dumplings with the chef, and attend lectures on Chinese arts and crafts, foot reflexology, and traditional medicine. Opt for multiple treatments in the surprisingly affordable spa, where the therapists are remarkably dexterous. Commentary is also excellent when it matters most. Guests are called outside for the separate breathtaking crossings through the Xiling, Wu, and Qutang gorges to learn about their historical importance while admiring the natural grandeur sandwiched between emerald cliffs. It’s times like these that the ship’s imperfections disappear, when the jaunt down this river less traveled begins to surface as one that makes the trek to the other side of the globe totally worth it. Book at The Peninsula Beijing and go into travel-planning cruise control, letting the in-house team map out an agenda that highlights the best of Beijing. Spend your first day savoring the amenities at this allsuite beauty. The lobby—underscored by a colossal gold-trimmed, marble staircase—is a high-ceilinged architectural stunner peppered with intricate sculptures and colorful artwork. The spacious suites are kitted out in dark, handsome furnishings that channel au courant Chinese glamour. Set in a replica of a nobleman’s courtyard home and serving the apex of Cantonese cuisine, Huang Ting is quite possibly the superlative dining experience in the entire city. The only coequal for this accolade is the hotel’s other restaurant, Jing, which specializes in contemporary French gastronomy with Asian influences. Once jet lag subsides, venture beyond the hotel with excursions curated by The Peninsula Academy. A Window on Chinese Contemporary Art offers a taste of
Beijing’s cutting-edge artsy pulse through stops at two studios and one-on-one time with rising artists. To indulge in classic Beijing, visit bucket-list juggernaut The Great Wall of China or take a guided rickshaw tour through the lost-in-time hutong lanes of the Hou Hai district. (peninsula.com) «

Audi’s new long-wheelbase A8 L is pure ease and joy. Did we mention it has a FOOT MASSAGER?
By Howard Walker The crystal ball and tea-leaf readers of the world will readily tell you the über-comfy luxury sedan is heading the way of Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory. Oh, you didn’t hear that two of television’s most popular shows ended this past spring? Oops, sorry for the spoiler. It seems fewer of us are buying majestic 7 Series BMWs in preference to the three-row X7 SUV. Sales of Cadillac’s lovely CT6 sedan pale in comparison to the Escalade. Mercedes’ tasteful S-Class? A fraction of what the XXL-sized GL-Class sells. But there’s still something appealing about a sleek, low-to-theground high-end sedan. It might come down to ease; there’s a simple pleasure in a ride that doesn’t require a ladder to climb into nor a captain’s license to maneuver through the Trader Joe’s parking lot.
Feast your eyes on Audi’s newest flagship A8—the redesigned, fourth-generation 2019 A8 L quattro—and tell me you don’t love its classic, black-tie look and restrained, dignified elegance. Okay, I’ll relent: Audi may have gone a little overboard on the “restrained” bit. Positioning this new Audi alongside its predecessor is a bit like seeing the Hemsworth brothers together. Is that Liam? Or maybe Chris? No, definitely Liam. Heck, I don’t know. Every body panel has been changed, though you might not immediately know it. What’s hard to miss, however, is that enlarged angular front grille, the bigger wheel openings covering gorgeous 20-inch rims, and the resculpted rear end. And trust me, you’ll want to splurge on the “dynamic lighting package,” which comes with a rear-end light show worthy of Las Vegas on the Fourth of July. Using new OLED technology, the full-width rear lights respond to you locking or unlocking the car by performing a choreographed dance that’s pure Disney. HIGH Born of Hollywood royalty, equestrian Hannah Selleck proves beauty, brawn, and brains are a formidable trifecta—in the saddle and beyond BY JUDY MARTEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUAN LAMARCA Shot on location at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach

At 8 a.m., as the sun lights up the purple-tinged Santa Monica mountain range, Hannah Selleck is where she is most at ease and in command: astride a horse. The early riser has already made the 40-minute commute from her home in West Los Angeles to her farm near Thousand Oaks, California. Against the valley’s cinematic backdrop, she concentrates on putting the mare through its paces in a combination of fluid grace and precise timing. The 30-year-old daughter of actors Tom Selleck and Jillie Mack has been a competitive equestrian show jumper since the age of 14, but her love of all things horses began a decade earlier when she was only 4. In addition to a rigorous competition schedule that keeps her on the road for much of the year, including in Wellington in the winter, she also runs a boutique horse-breeding operation, Descanso Farm, near the family’s 65-acre ranch in Ventura County. “Riding is always my priority,” says Selleck, who has the composure born from the confidence of identifying and mastering her life’s passion early. Years of hard work and dedication have culminated in qualifying for the grand prix level of competition and a stack of international medals, including top-five finishes in St. Moritz, Switzerland; Belgium; the Netherlands; and the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix at the 2015 Longines Masters of Los Angeles. When she’s not competing, she’s training horses on her farm. “For me, it’s always work,” she says. “It’s not like idle trail riding. We’re always working for a goal and we prepare for weeks for that one to two minutes in the arena. I’m always thinking about what we need to do to improve.” Selleck supervises a staff that includes a head groom and someone to help exercise the horses, but she is fully in charge, even down to managing the considerable logistics required for each competition. Her proficiency in a tough, international sport is not lost on those who know her best.

As [athletes], we always have goals and sometimes we forget to enjoy life.” “On days of competition, she is calm and disciplined in how she trains, prepares mentally, and executes her performance on course,” says Ariana Rockefeller, a fellow equestrian athlete and businesswoman who met Selleck on the circuit six years ago. “While the zeitgeist is telling society to be likeable, I truly have high esteem for Hannah because she is independent,” adds friend Julia Loomis, a documentary filmmaker based in Manhattan. “Yes, she’s spontaneous, optimistic, determined, witty, and extremely bright—qualities that are the best influence. But most impressively, she understands self-worth.” Today, the busy equestrian is back in the ring after breaking her leg while competing in Calgary last June. When a horse refused to jump and quickly turned, Selleck’s foot got stuck in the magnetic stirrup, resulting in a shattered tibia and fibula. She endured six hours of surgery followed by aggressive physical therapy, and was forced to the sidelines for seven months. Her return to the show ring this spring was rewarded with a second-place finish in the small tour grand prix at San Juan Capistrano, California. In a field where one fall can ruin a career, Selleck takes this latest setback in stride. “I consider myself to be very lucky with injuries in this sport,” she notes, pointing out that she’s sustained many broken bones in her 25 years of riding, none of which previously required surgery. This most recent forced hiatus provided an unanticipated opportunity to refocus, she says. “For the first time, I feel like it’s given me more balance in life. I’ve tried to take away that feeling. As [athletes], we always have goals and sometimes we forget to enjoy life.” Back in the saddle, she arranges transport for up to four of her horses for each competition. Her main mount, Barla, is a 15-year-old Oldenburg mare that she bought as a 7-year-old. The other three are horses she’s bred at her farm. During season at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington—which covers about 12 weeks in the winter and early spring—Selleck rents a home to be near the action. She typically rides every day except for Mondays and, to maintain her peak athletic form, she runs or attends spin classes and works with a personal trainer two to three times a week. “My last season in Wellington, I started to get into boxing and really enjoyed it,” she says. Though leisure is a scarce commodity, Selleck makes sure to carve out a little me time and escapes to Palm Beach when she can. She cites

Bice as a go-to lunch spot, Imoto or HMF for dinner with friends, and Cucina for its nightlife. Her beauty routine includes regular visits to Frédéric Fekkai Salon on the island, as well as massages at The Breakers when she has a day off. Though most often in riding clothes, she relishes dressing up on occasion and favors the clean, classic lines of Ralph Lauren. Off-duty, she says, “you can always find Lululemon in my suitcase.” Whether living out of that suitcase or at home in California, she keeps up with her global group of friends through long phone calls or in-person visits when possible. “We have this little game of playing ‘Where in the world are you?’ and try to coordinate,” says Loomis, a fellow jet-setter. “In fact, last time I saw Hannah was for my engagementannouncement party when she flew to New York just for the night.” Though on the surface, Loomis reflects, she and Selleck are opposite, they have much in common. “She is outgoing and the life of the party; [I’m] a bit reserved and introverted,” Loomis says. “But we also have passions for culture and dance, her mother being a former dancer.… When PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2019

we are together, we can go from casual, quiet dining to the American Ballet Theatre gala, to dancing, to a film. I think we just try to cover as much as possible until Hannah has to wake up at dawn to ride.” With both a British and American passport and most of her mother’s family living in England, Selleck considers it something of a second home. “The English countryside is so stunning, especially from horseback,” she says. “It is so exhilarating, galloping over miles of land, jumping the natural obstacles like ditches, gates, and hedges.” She’s close with her family on both sides of the pond and says that without the love and support of her parents, she probably wouldn’t be where she is in the highly competitive and expensive equestrian sport. “From a young age, they always encouraged me to follow my passion, and my passion is the horses,” she explains. “Once I finished university [at Loyola Marymount] and decided I wanted to pursue my passion, my father said he would help support me but that I had to turn professional, letting go of my amateur status, and work for top professionals in the sport in order to learn my craft. I did just that and apprenticed under some of the industry’s best. Now I have my own breeding operation, which my dad encouraged me to start when some of my top mares retired.” It’s not always easy to stand out as an individual when your family name is as well-known as Selleck’s. Rockefeller, the great-great granddaughter of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, understands this all too well. “As a fifth-generation member of the Rockefeller family, I have a great sense of pride for the accomplishments and contributions my family has made to society,” she says. “It has been impressive to see how [Selleck] has managed her career as an equestrian athlete, a representative of a famous name, and as a business owner of her breeding and training operation.” Selleck also makes it a priority to give back to the sport that shaped her life, acting as an ambassador for Brooke USA, a charity committed to improving the lives of horses, donkeys, and mules in the developing
world. She hopes one day to travel to Guatemala as part of that mission. “We teach better care for equines,” she explains. “People in developing countries rely on animals like donkeys for income. Better care for equines helps people.” Although she wants to have a family one day, Selleck says for now she leads “a bit of a gypsy life,” and it suits her. “I plan on competing as long as I enjoy it, and I don’t see that going away anytime soon,” she continues. She also wants to keep growing her business. “It’s very exciting to finally see the horses we’ve bred going in the ring and successfully competing. My goal is to see all these horses make it to the top level of the sport.” While she’s also considering earning an MBA, Selleck knows that her first love will always be her true love. “I want to keep going on the journey and see where it takes me,” she says. But whatever that future brings, she adds, “horses will always be part of my life.” «

Urbanites have long found respite from the summer heat in Highlands, a charming town located in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and sought out for its cool temperatures, unaltered beauty, and unlimited outdoor pursuits. Highlands’ foremost accommodations are intertwined in the town’s history. Part of what now stands as the Old Edwards Inn & Spa (oldedwardsinn.com), a Relais & Châteaux property, was once Central House, Highlands’ first boarding house circa 1878. As summer guests continued to flock, the hotel changed hands and underwent a few expansions until Palm Beachers Art and Angela Williams took ownership in the early aughts and invested in its restoration. Today, Old Edwards’ Historic Inn matches the feeling of a cozy mountain lodge with old-world sophistication. Oriental rugs and antiques from Angela’s travels outfit the suites, many of which boast fireplaces for curling up next to on a brisk night. The resort also encompasses multi-bedroom cottages ideal for families and estate rentals like the Rockwood Lodge manse with scenic surrounds. Those seeking a truly remote retreat should stay at the affiliated Half-Mile Farm (halfmilefarm.com), a renovated 1880s farmhouse on 14 idyllic acres just outside the center of town.

First, discover a bird’s-eye view of town and share a golden-hour picnic atop Sunset Rock, an easy half-mile hike starting across from the Highlands Nature Center. Next, prepare for a more challenging 2-mile loop up Whiteside Mountain, thought to be one of the oldest in the world with granite dating back more than 390 million years. After pursuing peaks, chase waterfalls—Highlands is brimming with them—including Bridal Veil Falls, visible from U.S. Route 64, and Dry Falls, nestled another mile or so down the road. Those who prefer admiring nature at a distance can play a round of golf at the Old Edwards Club, an impeccable course with vistas of faded blue peaks. Naturally, these rigorous activities should be matched with relaxation in equal measure. Nashville’s allure has long been rooted in country music, but it’s currently in the midst of a renaissance propelled by its rebranding as a hub for all genres and creatives. As one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, Nashville balances past with present, glorifying its euphonious traditions at music venues and attractions, while also welcoming new businesses, restaurants, art, and experiences. All of these factors inform the Music City of today, a locale that pulsates with the spirit of the great artists of yesteryear and promises to captivate audiences for decades to come. Nashville is composed of neighborhoods, all of which have something to offer in terms of sightseeing. Make your home base downtown, where accommodations are plentiful and the nightlife is booming. As with most outposts of this boutique chain, Hotel Indigo Nashville (ihg.com/hotelindigo) takes cues from its direct environment. Located in a former bank in Printer’s Alley, this hip hideaway boasts interiors influenced by the district’s printing legacy, as well as daily live music that’s also omnipresent in the surrounding streets. A couple blocks away rests the city’s grand dame, The Hermitage Hotel (thehermitagehotel.com). This five-star property opened in 1910 and quickly became a beacon for visiting politicians and celebrities. Its Beaux Arts decor is on display in its lobby decked in Tennessee marble and topped with a painted skylight. While its name derives from Andrew Jackson’s estate, management takes the definition of hermitage (a place of rest and seclusion) to heart by outfitting its 122 guest rooms with custom mattresses.

The sleek locomotives are impressive inside and out. They were, after all, designed by the talented team at the famed Rockwell Group. Though the aesthetic is that of an all-business-class jet, there are, in fact, two classes. Volkswagen I.D. Buzz All you tie-dye hippies and children of the ’60s, rejoice: Volkswagen is bringing back the legendary microbus. And this time, it’s going to be an eco-friendly, all-electric version. Reaction to the VW I.D. Buzz concept van at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show was so passionately positive that Volkswagen execs have finally given the go-ahead to a production model that’ll land at dealerships in 2022. Just like VW’s upcoming Buggy, the I.D. Buzz will have its batteries mounted under the floor powering a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, with the option of another electric motor up front to make it all-wheel drive. Depending on battery size, VW is talking about a zero-emission range of between 200 and 340 miles. And as with the original, it’ll be an ideal beach hauler, with space inside for up to eight and room on the roof to carry as many surfboards as you need. Roll on 2022, dude.

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz was inspired by the beloved VW bus that first emerged on the scene in 1950. But while that version only offered 30 hp, this new model boasts 369 hp from a duo of electric motors. Another bonus is the battery, which can regain roughly 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes using a patented VW fastcharging system. That translates to more time on the road and lounging at the beach.

Smart EQ Fortwo Prime Cabrio

Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric, drop-top Smart cabriolet might not be good for too many things—a range of just 57 miles sees to that. But as far as Florida beach cruisers go, it’s just about perfect for zipping around Palm Beach. Much of its appeal comes down to its charming, cartoonish look, from its smiley-face grille to its wide-as-it-is-long stance. As a city car it’s a delight to drive; step on the throttle and it scoots off the line like a spooked gecko before whirring along in near silence. See that prime beachfront parking space and you’re nabbing it, courtesy of the Smart’s minuscule 9-foot length and astonishing 22.8-foot spin-on-a-dime turning radius. Inside there’s room for two and a teeny trunk that will swallow a couple of beach bags. Sadly, Mercedes will stop importing Smarts to the United States by the end of this year, but there will be plenty on dealer lots for the foreseeable future. Grab one while you can.

Volkswagen I.D. Buggy No doors, no roof, no worries. That’s the idea behind Volkswagen’s new, take-it-to-the-beach I.D. Buggy, a contemporary spin on the VW-based dune buggies of the swinging ’60s. But instead of an old Beetle motor, this one is bang up-to-date with electric power. While Volkswagen is calling the Buggy a concept, word is there are firm plans to have it in production within the next couple of years. Using Volkswagen’s innovative MEB electric skateboard chassis, the Buggy comes with a 62kWh battery pack and a 200-hp electric motor. That’ll get you from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and up to 155 miles on a single charge. VW designers have captured the look and feel of the original Meyers Manx beach buggy, with its sweeping curves, angled windshield, and lack of doors. The entire interior is made from waterproof materials for hose-it-out cleaning, with a basic canvas top to protect against that stray shower. Better start stocking up on those Beach Boys 8-track tapes. PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2019

Originally designed as a military vehicle for the British army, the modern Moke has taken on a chic life all its own. The electric version is supremely customizable and available in an array of colors as well as camouflage. Prices for a new Moke start at $17,975.
Full disclosure here: This is my personal 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. I’ve owned it for more than 20 years, and for 20 years it has been the best beach cruiser on the planet—and the biggest head-turner. If your budget can’t accommodate a $300,000 lime-green Lamborghini convertible, a $20,000 ’76 Eldorado convertible will garner just as many dropped jaws and selfie snaps. This car is so huge—stretching more than 18 feet—it practically warrants its own zip code. You don’t so much park it as dock it, preferably with the help of several small Smart cars acting as tug boats. But nothing compares to the way I feel driving this thing top down, six passengers squeezed on the two big Barcalounger-like bench seats, and a little Jimmy Buffett on the stereo. While a monster 500-cubic-inch, 8.2-liter V-8 powers this beast, it surely runs on molasses because it’s so whisper-quiet and refined. We won’t talk about fuel economy, however. Purchase a restored or well-looked-after example for around $20,000, and every trip to the beach will become a joy ride.
Fiat 500 Spiaggina In 1958, the Fiat 500 Jolly was the coolest, cutest beach cruiser money could buy. Italian playboy and Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli commissioned Turin coachbuilder Ghia to slice the top off a pint-sized Fiat 500 and create a runabout for him to carry aboard his 82-foot sailing ketch, the Agneta. Ghia went on to forge another 400, and potential owners can expect to spend up to $100,000 for an original. Or you could order a brand-new Jolly from Garage Italia Milano, owned by Agnelli’s charismatic grandson, Lapo Elkann. Based on the latest Fiat 500, the 500 Spiaggina—a name derived from the Italian word for beach—is brimming with la dolce vita. Taking cues from a classic ’50s speedboat, the windshield has been cut down, the front seats replaced by a bench covered in two-tone, waterproof leather, and carpeting has been updated with nautical cork decking. And don’t forget the built-in spray shower for a quick spritz before aperitifs. 68

Moke America During the 1960s, the British-made Mini Moke was the must-have accessory of le jet set. Brigitte Bardot used hers for scooting around Saint-Tropez, and you simply weren’t part of the St. Barth’s fold unless you were behind the wheel of one. Most of these open-top runabouts eventually rusted away or were left abandoned in beach bar parking lots before collectors started rescuing them. Today, an original might cost you $25,000 and up, but you can also buy a new one built in Sarasota and powered by zero-emission electric motors. Moke America’s modern-day incarnation is classified as an LSV, or low-speed vehicle, designed for streets with a 35-mph limit. With its 10 batteries fully charged, the e-Moke has a top speed of 25 mph and can run 40 miles before needing to be plugged in. With seats for four and a range of wild colors, from sunshine yellow to Barbie pink, this silentrunning Moke makes for a fun beach cruiser.

WaterCar Panther Is it a car that thinks it’s a boat? Or a boat that wants to be a car? Amazingly, the California-built WaterCar Panther is pretty impressive at being both. On land, it looks and drives like a stretched Jeep Wrangler, capable of speeds up to 55 mph. When it comes time to tread water, the Panther will splash right in and part the waves at up to 44 mph. Power comes from a rear-mounted 3.7-liter 305-hp VTEC Honda V-6 that drives either the back wheels or a marine water jet. Not enough might? One owner had the company install a 500-hp 6.2-liter Corvette V-8. Once in the water, pull back on a lever to make the wheels retract into the glass-fiber body and engage the jet drive—a feat achieved in 15 seconds. The whole family can enjoy this wet-and-wild roadster, but remember to bring lifejackets just in case. Prices start at $139,000. PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2019

Revology 1966 Mustang GT Convertible
8
Mustang convertibles have been cruising the beach ever since Ford’s iconic pony car first rolled off the production line in April 1964. Trouble is, those early Mustangs are getting on in years and they’re a mechanical mishap waiting to happen. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. One call to Orlando-based Revology Cars and you could be creating a 1966 Mustang convertible all your own. Revology doesn’t do restorations; instead, this small team of artisans builds brand-new cars, with modern components wrapped in a bodyshell identical to the original. The gorgeous, silver-blue Revology 1966 Mustang GT convertible shown here comes with Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 packing 460 hp. It has the latest smooth-shifting transmission, brakes, suspension, and safety features. As you might suspect, the price of such best-of-the-best craftsmanship doesn’t come cheap, so expect to pay around $175,000 for a well-equipped example.
The Vanderhall Venice Speedster is the ultimate solo traveler, but other models offer passenger seating, too. Visually, it’s a beautiful blast from the past, complete with Saxony Brown upholstery, a vintage metallic body, and a wooden steering wheel. 70 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Jeep Wrangler
9
If there was a template for the perfect beach cruiser, it would be Jeep’s rugged Wrangler. Any Wrangler, in fact. From a cheap and cheerful “beater” off Craigslist, to the shiniest 2019 version, the Wrangler is the most fun open-top four-seater on the market. But this latest model—the one Jeep aficionados lovingly refer to as the JL—is a huge step up in terms of comfort, refinement, and quality. While it boasts a taller body and a longer wheelbase, it looks the same as before; anything too radical would have caused Jeepsters to riot in the streets. Under the hood, the standard engine is still the 3.6-liter V-6, but now there’s also a highly appealing 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor with some serious muscle. Couple this with a smoother ride, better transmission shifts from a new 8-speed automatic, and a massive improvement in interior trim, and the latest Wrangler is hard to resist.

Vanderhall Venice Want to draw attention like a Meghan and Harry sighting at J. Crew? Then head to the beach in a Vanderhall. These blast-to-drive, open-top three-wheelers are the creation of Provo, Utah–based Vanderhall Motor Works. Imagine the thrill of riding a motorcycle but sitting securely in a glass-fiber body with your passenger alongside. These are true pieces of automotive art, with craftsman quality and stunning detailing. Power comes from a trusty General Motors 1.4-liter four-cylinder cranking out 180 hp and spinning the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic. And boy, are they fast. Zero-to-60-mph sprinting takes just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph. Prices kick off at around $27,000 for the single-seater Venice Speedster, but there are no fewer than seven Vanderhall models to choose from, including an all-electric version, the Edison. As a beach cruiser, it does, however, have one fundamental flaw: a shortage of storage. But a towel and a tube of sunscreen will fit just fine. «

IN SEASON
MAJOR KEY
ASHLEY MEYER
When the summer months bring Café Centro executive chef Jamie Steinbrecher key limes—a tinier, more sour version of the tropical citrus fruit—does he go the traditional route and make pies? Or perhaps a tart? No. He whips up key lime gelato instead, marrying the Italian dessert with a flavor synonymous with South Florida. The perfect refresher on the hottest of days, this simple combination of cream, sugar, and lime zest and juice arrives at the table topped with a raspberry coulis and graham crackers. “It’s unlike normal gelato,” says Steinbrecher. “I’m not a huge fan of sugary things, so I love that the tart key lime flavor sits above the sweetness.” West Palm Beach (cafecentrowpb.com) —Liz Petoniak

TASTE TRADITIONS
FANNING the Fire
Booming interest in the food of the American South has sparked a renaissance in barbecue. Take your ’cue from any of these authentic local spots. —Mark Spivak

West Palm Beach Daniel Spann mans the grill at this food truck that morphed into a take-out restaurant. Assisted by his brother, he turns out tender Memphis-style ribs, formidable smoked turkey legs, pulled pork (accompanied by a Carolina sweet mustard sauce), and smoked sausage. Pair your choice with collard greens or pigeon peas and rice, but be sure to save room for either the pecan pound cake or sweet potato pie. Off Tha Bone may still be under the radar but it won’t stay that way for long. (561-294-9717)
PIG-STY BBQ, Boynton Beach Pitmaster Bryan Tyrell’s credentials are impeccable. After growing up in Kansas City, he collaborated with mentor Jeff Stehney to win the American Royal World Championship two years in a row. His definition of true KC barbecue is simple: “In Kansas City we know how to smoke more than one animal.” As a result, Pig-Sty’s eclectic menu includes turkey, Carolina pulled pork, and Texas-style beef ribs. Everything is made from scratch on the premises, from the fresh-cut fries and onion rings to the ice cream created using seasonal fruits. (pigstybbq.com)
«
OFF THA BONE BBQ,
TROY’S BAR-BE-QUE, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton Barbecue is a family affair here, with pitmaster Troy Davis running the operation alongside his sons. St. Louis–style ribs are Davis’ specialty, and he’s obsessive about preparation, choosing his meat carefully and soaking it in a combination of vinegar and water. For his fire, Davis is looking for “no flames, just smoke.” He uses both charcoal and oak and bastes his ribs every 15 to 20 minutes until they fall off the bone. And if you want sauce, you have to ask for it: “A good rib doesn’t need anything on it.” (bbqtroys.com)
PARK AVENUE BBQ GRILLE, multiple locations Entrepreneur and restaurant veteran Dean Lavallee founded PA BBQ in Lake Park in 1988. Today, his eight locations specialize in Virginia Beach barbecue, an unsung style that is tomato-based, slightly sweet and slightly spicy, with a bit of vinegar in the background to supply acidity. Park Avenue’s inclusive menus feature four seafood items and a plant-based barbecue (“you need different bait for every fishing hole,” observes Lavallee). Purists can indulge in St. Louis ribs, brisket, or pulled pork, accompanied by a roll call of classic sides such as baked beans and collard greens. (pabbqgrille.com)
«
STUART’S FISH & PIG, Stuart Co-owner Ken Stuart intended to open a smokehouse specializing in fish dip, but customers kept asking for barbecue. “In the beginning we offered [a Texas-style] brisket one day each week, and it’s now our best-selling item,” he says. Stuart spent three decades in Tennessee and North Carolina, so he also has a soft spot for pulled pork with Memphis and Carolina-inspired sauces. Freshness is paramount at his 24-seater, which closes each day when the meat runs out. “With barbecue you either sell out or you sell leftovers, and we don’t sell leftovers.” (stuartsfishandpig.com) 74

LIBBY VOLGYES
The familiar ice cube has evolved into one of the ultimate refinements in the craft cocktail revolution. Mazie’s, the West Palm Beach restaurant devoted to new interpretations of old-world dishes, offers one of the most elaborate ice programs in the area. “We think of ice the same way other people think of comfort foods,” says general manager and co-founder Jason Lakow. “It’s hard to do simple things really well.” Mazie’s uses an indirect freezing method that is both time-consuming and expensive. But, it’s a quest Lakow deems necessary because he feels that 95 percent of all commercial ice contains enough oxygen to ruin quality spirits in a cocktail. At Mazie’s, the water is first boiled and then frozen in a

orks have been the preferred method of sealing wine and spirits bottles for centuries. After the Industrial Revolution replaced mouth-blown glass bottles with the cheaper machinemade versions, corks became uniform in size and even more popular. Over time, they’ve evolved to represent part of the mystique of the wine-drinking experience. It’s no wonder then that screwcaps were immediately viewed as the red-headed stepchildren of the wine world when they first appeared. Many consumers looked down on them, associating the screwcap with subpar libations, such as Boone’s Farm, best enjoyed in convenience store parking lots. That image gradually changed as quality wine from Australia and New Zealand flooded the American market; before long, some unassuming California wineries were also adopting alternative closures.
The issue of cork taint accelerated the acceptance of the screwcap. No one seems to know exactly where this fault came from, but it rendered wine undrinkable. Napa’s PlumpJack Winery (which also owns two other esteemed properties: Odette and Cade) estimated that as many as 8 percent of wine bottles sealed with cork were ruined by taint. In 2000, PlumpJack took the radical step of bottling half of its 1997 Reserve Cabernet in screwcap and half in cork. For the first time, consumers were offered the opportunity to pay $150 for a wine with a screwcap closure, and it paved the way for other top estates to follow suit. (PlumpJack continues to bottle half of its Reserve output that way, along with a portion of its estate wine.) The jury is still out on the question of how well screwcap wines age relative to their cork counterparts. The University of California at Davis conducted a study on 600 bottles of Cade Sauvignon Blanc, and after

five years found little difference between the bottles sealed with cork, synthetic cork, and screwcap. There have been numerous informal tastings of the 1997 PlumpJack Reserve Cabernet that compare the two closures side by side after intervals of 10 to 15 years. In every case where the wines were tasted blind, participants found the screwcap version to be fresher and more vibrant. I recently had the opportunity to sample the 2016 estate Cabernets from Cade ($110), Odette ($155), and PlumpJack ($145), all bottled under screwcap. The deeply colored, mountain-grown Cade had a fragrant nose redolent of boysenberry jam. It was rich and concentrated in the mouth, with a panorama of dark berry flavors and hints of crushed herbs. The addition of 12-percent Petit Verdot and 7-percent Malbec added to the wine’s texture and stiff tannins. Odette, from a 45-acre vineyard in the Stags Leap district, was virtually opaque and nearly black. The cool, refreshing nose yielded whiffs of minerals, anise, black plums, and mint. Despite its fierce concentration, it was also graceful and balanced, with supple tannins and a fine herbal edge. Good acidity offset the wine’s viscous texture, and the exceptionally long finish resonated with an assortment of black fruits. The nose of the flagship PlumpJack Cabernet was clean and fresh,
with recessed aromas of dark berries and new oak. On the palate, notes of ripe blackberries mingled with mocha and baking spices. The medium-bodied texture was accented by pinpoint acidity, and the wine was an absolute pleasure to drink—far more so than many Napa Cabernets at the same or higher price. While we don’t know how these wines will age, there’s much to recommend now. We’ve come a long way from the convenience store parking lot. «

It was a match made in renovation heaven when designer Leah Logue met broker Scott Carey eight years ago. The two have since married and now work together to breathe new life into homes in need of a facelift, with Logue, owner of Logue Decorators, handling the aesthetics and Carey taking care of the construction and real estate portion through his company, Palm Group Realty. For their most recent project, the couple overhauled a historic Southland Park property built in 1924 and updated in the 1960s. They wanted to make the kitchen the heart of the home, reengineering it with an eye toward functionality and creating enough
083_HOME_0719.indd 83
space to suit the needs of a modern family. For the decor, they opted for a “tuxedo” theme with black cabinetry and white countertops. The end result, while new and fresh, still speaks to the home’s Mediterranean accents and Spanish Revival roots. “Our goal was to create an open, inviting, and functional space reminiscent of the 1920s,” Logue explains. “To achieve this, we incorporated materials from the era with a modern application, including subway tiles, hand-painted Spanish mosaic tiles, polished brass hardware, a cast-iron sink, globe pendant lights, and the brassand-black European gas range.” (logue decorators.com; palmgrouprealty.com)

ROW House Now South Floridians can merrily row, row, row their boat sans water thanks to Palm Beach Row. Fatherand-son team Ken and Blake Rothmel opened the North Palm Beach studio earlier this year with the goal of providing high-energy, personalized, expert-led indoor rowing sessions. “In our row room, we have implemented several sensory enhancements to help you focus on pushing yourself further than you ever thought you could,” explains Blake, whose wife, Danielle, also works at the studio. “When the doors close to isolate you from the outside world, you can expect low-level lighting, pumped-up music, LED-lit rowers, and accent lighting that changes color based on the current intensity of the workout, as well as ceiling-mounted misters that instantly cool the entire space after a hard effort.” Worried you don’t fit the athletic profile? Blake notes that Palm Beach Row’s 45-minute group classes are suitable for all ages, body types, and

fitness levels. “A good portion of our clientele have started their fitness journeys with us because we offer personal guidance through what can be a challenging workout in an ‘all are welcome’ atmosphere,” he says. “Our classes are designed with a ‘set your own pace’ workout style where we encourage you to honor your body and just do what you can, which is more and more every class.” (palmbeachrow.com) PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | JULY/AUGUST 2019

BALANCE Q&A: ANGELA IRISH
NOTHING BUT BEAUTY Certified aesthetician Angela Irish was distraught at the prevalence of harmful ingredients such as parabens, petrochemicals, and sulfates in skincare products—so she launched her own line. Based in West Palm Beach, OZNaturals offers all-natural products made using a cold-process method that results in a smaller carbon footprint. Irish started the company six years ago, working under the guiding principle to provide customers with a collection that is clean, effective, and affordable. Here, she discusses the inherent issues of skin-care additives and her contribution to the industry. (oznaturals.com)
«
PBI: Why are additives in skin-care products such an issue? Irish: So many toxins can be found in skin-care products due to the FDA’s lax restrictions. For example, sulfates, often used for lathering, are known to be skin, lung, and eye irritants. When combined with other chemicals, they can form nitrosamine, which is a known carcinogen. Parabens, which are used in preservatives, are also known carcinogens that have also been linked to endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity. It’s a real problem that the public needs to be aware of in order to protect themselves. What is cold-processed skin care and what sets it apart from other methods? Cold processing is so unique because we are making the products at room temperature instead
of using high heat, unlike most other skin-care brands. Heat degrades some vitamins and herbs, which can destroy the key ingredients. We want the percentage of efficacy to remain as intended so that the end product is more potent and ef-
fective for the consumer. Cold processing also allows us to produce without the use of petrochemicals, which are known carcinogens and can be irritating, drying to the skin, and can clog the pores as well. How should consumers go about selecting OZNaturals products best suited to their skin? OZNaturals products can be used by all ages, skin types, and complexions. This is also something we’ve done with purpose. We wanted to be the brand that is all-inclusive and serves the majority of people and their needs. Because our products are so gentle, natural, and effective, it’s actually easier to choose the products you need. Beyond that, we have a skin type quiz on the home page that helps guide you further in making the best choices.

MARGARITAS
MOJITOS
The facts: Frozen margaritas are often made with sugar-saturated mixes loaded with calories and artificial ingredients. The fix: Order tequila with fresh lime juice and a touch of pure stevia over ice. Or, try a Paloma, composed of tequila, fresh lime and grapefruit juices, and club soda, poured over ice and served in a salt-rimmed glass.
The facts: Rum is already slightly more calorie-heavy than other liquors, and the traditional mojito recipe calls for simple syrup or sugar—the amount of which is at the bartender’s discretion. The fix: Ask for a sugarless mojito and make up for its absence by requesting extra mint or adding muddled fruit like raspberries for natural sweetness.

2
PIÑA COLADAS The facts: You may love piña coladas (and getting caught in the rain), but this umbrella drink is packed with calories, sugar, and saturated fat thanks to the coconut cream typically used to make it. The fix: Try vodka and pineapple juice to satisfy your pineapple craving, or a mixture of light rum, coconut water, and pineapple juice over ice.

FIT TO TRAVEL Departing home does not mean a departure from your fitness goals. Throw one of these travel-friendly exercise tools into your suitcase and keep in shape wherever life takes you.
IN-FLIGHT Skin Saviors
JUMP FOR JOY
Wondering why your face looks as jet-lagged as you feel after a long plane ride? The first culprit is humidity. While the ideal relative humidity for preventing dry skin is 60 percent, an airplane hovers around 20 percent. Making a bad situation worse, skin often tries to combat super-dry air through increased oil production, leading to an oily T-zone and, potentially, acne. Secondly, regardless of the actual cruising altitude, commercial aircrafts are typically pressurized to around 7,000 feet—the equivalent of standing on top of a mountain. This results in decreased blood flow to your skin, causing it to appear dull. Don’t give up your glow without a fight. Before you board your next flight, pick up these three must-haves at Sephora. (sephora.com)
IT’S A DEAL No equipment? No suitcase space? No problem. Featured on Shark Tank, FitDeck playing cards ($10-$15) aim to disrupt humdrum workout routines by creating a new circuit of exercises with each shuffle. Choose from eight titles in the no equipment category and deal out a workout that requires nothing more than your body mass. (fitdeck.com)

Movie MAGIC
COURTESY OF THE DWIGHT M. CLEVELAND COLLECTION
Since its inception, film has been a marriage of art and commerce. With the rise of theatergoing came the need to attract audiences—and thus the movie poster was born. Beginning July 12, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach will explore this commercial art form in “Coming Soon: Film Posters from the Dwight M. Cleveland Collection.” Cleveland, a Chicago real estate developer, has spent decades building his catalogue, a hobby spurred by his love of art as opposed to a passion for movies. This exhibition is the first deep dive into his collection and the first significant museum show dedicated to classic film posters. “The overall narrative is the entire history of movie posters—what they were created for and how they changed over time because of how movies developed, how society developed, and how the ability to reproduce images changed,” says co-curator Matthew Bird. The exhibit features 215 posters and is broken into sections based on printing techniques, poster size, foreign films, subgenres such as Western and Sci-Fi, and a chronological overview from the turn of the century to the 1980s. For his part, Cleveland has always been drawn to the aesthetic qualities of

these posters and in the hunt for acquisitions. Sometimes those are born out of happy accidents—as when he was alerted to a treasure trove of posters used as insulation in a home in Indiana—or are the result of intense internet sleuthing. Either way, Cleveland lives by one mantra: “Buy what you love. I have always stuck with that, and it’s a great strategy for anybody who’s a collector.” (norton.org)

JAZZ IT UP Prepare to discover your newest musical addiction when Douyé takes the Arts Garage stage July 12. Born in Nigeria, Douyé grew up with an innate love of singing, one she channeled into performing in her church choir and belting out favorites from her father’s record collection. Although she’s previously dabbled in R&B, her latest album, Daddy Said So, is all about jazz. It features sultry interpretations of the standards her late father introduced her to as a child, from the gorgeous Gershwin-written “Someone to Watch Over Me” to the Spanish-language bolero hit “Bésame Mucho.” Listeners will be tempted to herald Douyé as a modern-day Billie Holiday—especially when she sings Holiday’s “Body and Soul”—but this songstress boasts a vocal styling all her own paired with a passion for musicianship and a thirst for creative compositions. LABOR OF LOVE
JEN SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY
The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival returns for its twenty-ninth annual Shakespeare by the Sea production July 11-14 and 18-21. This year, the company will stage what is arguably the bard’s most well-known play: Romeo and Juliet. The tragic tale set in Verona, Italy, follows two teens from feuding families who find themselves in the throes—and eventual downfall—of love. Written between 1594 and 1596, Romeo and Juliet was an instant success in Shakespeare’s day and continued to gain popularity in the centuries that followed. In recent history, the drama has been interpreted as a musical (West Side Story) and in popular film adaptations, most notably the Baz Luhrmann–directed iteration starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the title roles. The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival will introduce the world to two new star-crossed lovers, with performances scheduled for 8 p.m. at Seabreeze Amphitheater in Jupiter’s Carlin Park. This month, I want to share some of the items I feel good about using on a daily basis. Wildflower Beauty is one of my go-to brands. Owner Jessica Krammer handpicks everything and her collection is downright decadent. The matcha tea line smells good enough to eat—and you literally could because all of her creations are safe to ingest. Speaking of eating, consumers are used to wrapping food in plastic, but it can actually leach chemicals. Instead, reach for Bee’s Wrap, a reusable alternative made of organic cotton and beeswax. There’s always a candle burning in my home, but I only recently discovered that not all are created equal. Opt for those made from soy and cotton wicks, like those by Antique Candle Co. Finally, to learn more about food and the industries surrounding it, pick up a copy of Vani Hari’s new l FOR MORE FASHIONABLE book, Feeding You Lies. It will BUYS, WATCH THE “EMILY’S PICKS” change the way you eat, shop, SEGMENT ON CBS12.COM. and look at the world.
