Palm Beach County Medical Society and Palm Beach Illustrated are pleased to announce the results of the inaugural “Exceptional Physicians-Exceptional Care” program. The voting process, which was approved by the PBCMS Board of Directors, invited all board-certified physicians who practice in Palm Beach County to vote for any boardcertified physician practicing in our County to whom they would refer their own patients or family members. This year’s process resulted in more than 200 physicians being honored by their peers, 34 of whom received the “Exceptional Physician” designation.

nama-stay For a stay-cation that is at once rigorous and relaxing, check out the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa’s Float and Fly Yoga Retreat, held July 17-20. During this long weekend, participants will practice stand-up paddleboard yoga led by international teacher Amelia Travis. In the evening, instructor Kerri Verna will lead inversion yoga and AcroYoga classes, which include exercises such as forearm stands and headstands. In between, yogis can enjoy the Eau Spa, which has garnered accolades from such publications as CondÊ Nast Traveler and Town & Country magazine. (561-540-4960, eaupalmbeach.com)
Retreat participants will experience paddleboard yoga, a modified yoga technique taught by Amelia Travis.
Rowing Revolution
Looking for a fun and refreshing water activity to try this summer? Then pick up an oar and give rowing a shot. As a recreational exercise, rowing reaps many aerobic benefits regardless of age or fitness level. It targets almost every major muscle group, yet is still considered a low-impact exercise that provides a full-body workout. In addition to gatherings for master rowers, the North Palm Beach Rowing Club hosts learn-to-row courses during July and August. Participants are taught the fundamentals of rowing, including terminology, care and use of equipment, basic techniques and safety rules. (561-691-0912, npbrc.com)
Fitness fun The Kids Fitness Festival of the Palm Beaches returns to the Palm Beach County Convention Center from July 16-17. This annual festival gives local youth the opportunity to dabble in more than 40 sporting activities, including archery, soccer, bowling, squash, field hockey, tennis and surfing. Professionals from each sport will be on hand to lend coaching support and lead clinics, and local mascots will appear to cheer on the kid athletes as they tackle the rock wall and dominate the bounce house. Skinny on Easy Raw The Sugar Substitutes In a raw diet, refined sugar should be avoided. Most raw “baking” recipes substitute refined sugar with a healthier, all-natural ingredient. Common substitutions include raw honey (which is not vegan), maple syrup and processed dates. To make your dates sugarsubstitute ready, combine them with water in a food processor until smooth. The amount of water to dates depends on how thick or loose you prefer the final syrup to be. A good starting ratio to keep in mind is one cup of pitted dates to two cups of water.
Buzzworthy
Summertime means the height of mosquito season. This year, skip the DEETbased repellents and choose a chemical-free alternative. Lemon eucalyptus is a potent and natural bug repellent, as specified in an article published in the Malaria Journal. The synthesized version of oil of lemon eucalyptus, referred to as PMD, is an approved insect repellant by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and can be found in such products as Off! Botanicals. Though pure lemon eucalyptus oil has not received the same distinction from the CDC, it has long been used as a repellent, contains 85 percent citronella and can be effective for around two hours. In Boca Raton, Lisa’s Herbs and Oils hand pours custom blends of essential oils, including lemon eucalyptus. (954-415-1871, lisasherbsandoils.com)

Balance Research Roundup
Kendall Nettles
Kirill Martemyanov
Two Jupiter research institutions are making headlines for scientific studies, advancements and initiatives. At the Scripps Research Institute, scientists have unveiled the mystery behind resveratrol’s healthy properties and also identified a protein that plays a crucial role in memory. Resveratrol—a compound found in grapes, red wine and blueberries, to name a few— is heralded for its apparent health benefits and anti-inflammatory properties. Associate professor Kendall Nettles led the study that identified how the compound achieves its healthy attributes, discovering it controls the body’s inflammatory response by binding with the estrogen receptor without stimulating cell proliferation. Also at Scripps, scientists led by Kirill Martemyanov have shown that a protein complex, RGS7, is vital to learning and memory formation. In conjunction with another protein, RGS7 works within the hippocampus, the section of the brain that converts short-term memory to long-term, to regulate a signaling system necessary for cognitive development. Without this process, deficits in learning and memory occur. Marte-
myanov believes these findings could be used in therapeutic applications. (561-228-2000, scripps.edu) At the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, a number of researchers have been awarded grants to further their studies. The Whitehall Foundation has provided Dr. Hiroki Taniguchi with the funds to study chandelier cells, which appear to play a role in brain disorders such as schizophrenia and epilepsy. “If we understand the precise function of chandelier cells in neural circuits, we may be able to use this information to develop new diagnostics and treatments for brain disorders,” Taniguchi explains in a statement. Additionally, Dr. Hyungbae Kwon was awarded a grant to research autism spectrum disorder, specifically the study of the proteins neuroligins, which may be associated with neural communication disruptions prevalent in an autistic brain. All of these findings and initiatives illustrate the wealth of scientific riches to be found in Palm Beach County. (561-972-9000, maxplanckflorida.org)

Technology permeates every facet of our lives, including doctor’s visits. Seeing the need for a stronger marriage of technology and health care, Boca Raton entrepreneur Daniel Cane co-founded Modernizing Medicine. The company’s Electronic Medical Assistant services cloud-based records to individual practices and is available for iPads. “EMA allows physicians to have a more efficient and personal appointment with a patient,” Cane
Daniel Cane
explains. We spoke with Cane about the features of EMA and how technology is changing the patientdoctor relationship. (561-880-2998, modmed.com)

To learn more about the features of EMA and the future of medical technology, visit palmbeachillustrated.com/modernizingmedicine
Mod Med How are advances in handheld technology affecting the medical experience for patients? So many patients have iPhones and iPads, so they are accustomed to the technology. They do their banking, order their movies, etc., using mobile platforms on a daily basis. Health care is behind the times compared with other industries, and it will take some getting used to now that effective applications such as EMA are beginning to change the landscape. What guiding philosophies regarding doctor-patient interaction did you take into account when designing EMA? The first was that we wanted to develop an EMR system that could save physicians time. … Secondly, we hoped to create a system allowing physicians to focus more on their patients, instead of writing in charts or turning their backs to patients to type into a computer. What do you see as the greatest benefit to incorporating electronic medical record systems into doctor’s offices? It saves doctors time. This enhanced efficiency frees up more time for doctor-to-patient dialogue and improves the quality of their interactions.

Makes Sense
Let’s be honest: Undergoing your annual mammogram is not exactly a day at the spa. At least, not until now. The new SensorySuite, designed by GE Healthcare and available at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute, brings a spa-like environment to the exam room with the goal of alleviating stress or discomfort. Patients choose from three surroundings—garden, waterfall or beach— that simultaneously stimulate sight, smell and sound to distract from the task at hand. BRRH is the first Florida location to offer the SensorySuite experience—which, given its emphasis on comfort, could help lead to better breast screenings and overall health. (561-955-5000, brrh.com)

Average is Beautiful Step aside, Barbie. Artist Nickolay Lamm is giving young girls a more realistic representation of the female body with the Lammily doll. Lammily is based on the dimensions of an average 19-year-old girl, as specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her down-to-earth style and minimal makeup make her a more apropos and healthy playmate and model. And, because she has articulated wrists, knees, elbows and feet, she can run, jump, play and kick—or at least pretend to. Since raising more than half a million dollars through crowd funding, Lamm has been developing the first-edition Lammily dolls, which are available for preorder with a November delivery date. Eventually, the artist hopes to expand the line to include many ethnicities and healthy shapes, all stressing the message that average is beautiful. (lammily.com)

Ilana Jacqueline
Michael Price Photography
PalmBeach Surgical Associates Boca Raton resident Ilana Jacqueline is bringing a voice to rare diseases through her blog Let’s Feel Better. Jacqueline was diagnosed with the chronic illnesses Primary Immune Deficiency Disease at 19 years old and Dysautonomia at 22 and began blogging shortly after the latter diagnosis. Having written for local and national publications and websites since she was 14, the bubbly millennial found blogging about her rare diseases to be a natural and necessary therapeutic release. “I tried explaining everything to my family and my friends, and had a lot of people who just didn’t understand,” she says. “They either didn’t believe that I was really sick or would say things like, ‘Feel better.’” As Jacqueline notes, living with rare diseases can be an isolating existence. “When you have a rare disease, you just feel so alone. … It’s hard to get support when you can’t put a label on something,” she says. On her blog, she shares her day-today experiences with her own diseases in hopes of connecting with those suffering from the same illnesses or other, more common ailments. “Even though I have rare diseases, there are so many daily situations that I know people with anything from Crohn’s Disease to arthritis to HIV go through every day,” she says. Presented in a personal, diary-style narrative, Let’s Feel Better focuses on Jacqueline’s struggles as well as her advice and coverage of new research and treatments. Her tone, which she describes as “tentatively hopeful and amused by the terrible things that happen,” is at once perspicacious and entertaining, full of pop-culture references, hysterical GIFs and witty asides. “It makes me feel great [to know] people are either learning or connecting or just laughing even when they’re having really bad days,” she says. Beyond her own blog, Jacqueline is also working on a memoir and is the managing editor for the blog at the Global Genes Project, a rare and genetic disease advocacy organization. With Global Genes, Jacqueline is able to help other patients tell their stories. “All I want is for other people to come out and blog about their diseases,” she says. “Hopefully, that helps patients who need to see that there are other people like them.” (561-542-1105, letsfeelbetter.com)

For Body: Just in time for summer travel, the Entrain app has arrived to help curb jet-lag woes. Entrain uses lighting schedules to help users adjust their circadian clocks to the outside hour. Enter your typical hours of light and dark in your current time zone, then select the time zone you’ll be traveling to and when you’ll be leaving. The app will provide a schedule of when to be in periods of light and dark leading up to your departure so by the time you leave, your body will be ready for London, Rome or even Tokyo. (entrain.org) For Mind: The mental benefits of meditation are undisputed, but it can be difficult to get started. The Mindfulness Mediation program, available via the Mental Workout app, provides meditation novices with the tools to get in the zone. Designed by meditation expert Stephan Bodian, the program offers instructions on such topics as sitting positions and breathing, as well as six guided meditations varying from five to 40 minutes. It also includes deep relaxation exercises, tips for mindful traveling, inspirational talks and an eight-week meditation plan. (800-940-0160, mentalworkout.com) For Health: With the First Aid App by American Red Cross you’ll be ready to tackle whatever first-aid emergency life throws your way. The app is stocked with expert advice on how to handle common crises like allergic reactions, burns and asthma attacks. And, because the info is preloaded, users don’t need an Internet connection to access the tips and instructions. Videos and step-by-step instructions walk you through tasks, while interactive quizzes let you to test your new skills. (800-733-2767, redcross.org)

I am
living proof. To read more of Pete’s story, visit wellingtonlivingproof.com When my heart stopped and I lost consciousness in my wife’s car, she didn’t miss a beat. She drove me straight to the ER at Wellington Regional. Her quick thinking and the hospital’s response saved my life. Wellington’s sophisticated cardiac treatments prevented any disabling effects to my brain and other organs. Sadly, most people with sudden cardiac arrest die, but not me. I’ve got a lot more living to do!

Balance Jill Botnick
There are many ways to shave off a few swings from one’s golf game. In Palm Beach, Squeeze Pilates applies the principles of Pilates to golf in its Pilates for Golf program. “Pilates helps golfers to hit the ball farther and straighter while reducing the risk of injury,” explains instructor Jill Botnick. We chatted with Botnick about the philosophies and benefits of Pilates for Golf, which is available by appointment seven days a week in group and private settings. (561-804-9977, squeezepilates.com) How do Pilates principles apply to golf techniques? The principles that are incorporated in a Pilates program are core strength, flexibility, lengthening the spine, alignment and posture, stability, balance and focus. All movements in golf initiate from the abdominals, and Pilates strengthens the deep core muscles, which in return give the golfer more power in his swing. What are the prime benefits of the workout? Pilates builds core strength, and the core must be engaged through the entire golf swing. The core includes the muscles from

the upper torso to the hips. It works the deeper abdominal muscles that give the golfer more stability needed when hitting the ball. Can Pilates for golf address injuries acquired while golfing? When Joseph Pilates started teaching his method of body conditioning in New York, one of his goals was to rehabilitate injured dancers. The same principles can be applied to golf injuries.

Daniel C. Morello, MD, FACS Bonnie marting, dnp, arnp Anushka Spa, Salon & Cosmedical Centre
When selecting a specialist in Medical Aesthetics, what are the key criteria? The ideal medical aesthetics practitioner devotes his or her entire focus to that specialty alone and has a proven record of excellence and acclaimed results in the field. It can take many years to develop the skill to help patients look their best without looking overdone. Many providers today want to add some of these treatments to their existing practice, whether it be internal medicine, ophthalmology or even dentistry. Anushka’s medical team boasts Dr. Daniel C. Morello, FACS, world-renowned plastic surgeon and past president of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP, ARNP, who received her specialty aesthetic training at John Hopkins University and has more than 17 years of aesthetic experience. Today, Marting is a regional trainer for BOTOX, Juvéderm, Restylane, Dysport, Sculptra and Voluma. What are the latest developments/innovations in your field? One of the latest innovations in this field is Voluma by Allergan. It’s a relative of Juvéderm but has the capacity to lift and sculpt better than any of the other fillers available in the country. While Sculptra can lift and restore youth over time, Voluma is more immediate and can leave the patient “party-ready” the same day. What differentiates your practice From other specialists in the field? As an educator and a trainer in the medical aesthetics arena, I see firsthand the misconceptions and errors made by practitioners early in their career. Maturing into a good provider is a practice that takes time, experience and care. We offer an approach that minimizes fear and eases discomfort to provide not only great results but also a wonderful experience from the first phone call to the actual treatment. Plastic Surgery
What are the latest developments/ innovations in your field? Plastic surgery is constantly evolving. The newest advances in plastic surgery include contoured gel implants for breast surgery. We are employing advanced fat-grafting techniques and new volumizing fillers to treat facial aging. These techniques can give nearinstant improvement. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? I have an artistic eye and a perfectionist mind-set. But what really distinguishes my practice is the time I spend truly learning and understanding my patients’ needs and desires. Every patient is different, and taking the time to learn these differences helps me provide my patients with the best care for their individual needs. What is your favorite pastime? I have three wonderful children, ages 8, 6 and 2. My favorite pastime is spending time with them. I love to incorporate them into my hobbies. It is great to see them learning to do the things I enjoy: fishing, gardening and craftwork. Together, we have built toys, furniture and a wagon. It is amazing to teach your own children to build things with hand tools and see how quickly they learn. Office Contact: Terry Snyder 1500 N. Jacob d. steiger, md Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery
When selecting a specialist in Plastic Surgery, what are the key criteria? Whether you are seeking a facelift, rhinoplasty or Botox, choosing a facial plastic surgeon is an important decision. Finding a surgeon with excellent credentials and board certification ensures a physician is qualified to treat you. You must also establish a good relationship built on confidence and trust with your physician. Always view before and after photos of patients who have had similar procedures, and speak to some of the doctor’s patients. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? Our practice is dedicated purely to facial plastic surgery. Focusing and specializing on just the face and neck, we combine the most advanced techiques and the latest technology to achieve the best possible results. How do you keep up on the latest advances in your field? Dr. Steiger attends and lectures at national and international facial plastic surgery meetings. He is also continually evaluating new technology, from new lasers and devices to surgical instruments and medications, that allow for the most effective results with as minimal downtime as possible. Charles A. Messa, III MD, FACS Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center
When selecting a specialist in cosmetic surgery, what are the key criteria? The most important factor is choosing a plastic surgeon with experience, advanced training and board certification. The physician should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have documented experience in cosmetic surgery through membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. What are the latest developments/ innovations in your field? Scientists can now sequence the human genome and identify single genes, isolating stem cells to be programmed to become any type of cell in the body. Such achievement has the potential for curing diseases and repairing damaged tissues. The use of adipose derived stem cells for soft tissue augmentation and facial rejuvenation is going to revolutionize treatment for contour deformities, breast reconstruction and restoration of loss of facial soft tissue volume with aging. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? My practice is unique in the fact that our entire office is dedicated to each individual patient’s utmost satisfaction and wellbeing. Patient welfare, safety, and attention to detail in patient care are my priority. I treat each patient as if they were a member of my family.
