Seeing you through the next century: Manero ChronoPerpetual.

Perpetual calendar, every possible date complication, flyback chronograph function and tachymeter scale – the complexity and functionality of the Manero ChronoPerpetual is hard to match. An impressive timepiece, whose date will require no correction until the year 2100, when the Gregorian calendar calls for the omission of a leap year. www.carl-f-bucherer.com

2013 MKZ

When did luxury lose focus on the individual and start seeing us all as one? When did it swerve from a singular vision and head for the middle road? We’re not sure who led this detour, but a new road starts here with the 2013 MKZ by the Lincoln Motor Company. Now with an innovative pushbutton shift designed to create an elegantly open and very personal interior cabin space. Get to know the MKZ at Lincoln.com.

v FROM THE PUBLISHER

Join the Conversation

ach week, I get reports about Palm Beach Illustrated, Weddings Illustrated and our other publications “trending on Twitter,” going up another “100 likes” on Facebook or being “retweeted” by a national fashion designer or noted photographer, and items on our websites being pinned and repinned on thousands of Pinterest pages. At first, I thought, “That’s nice.” Now I’ve learned it’s more than nice; it’s huge. As someone who most often uses the Internet only to search for a travel destination or a movie review, I didn’t immediately understand how our Web pages are driving business—readers and advertisers—to our print pages. While our websites and other new media products such as eNewsletters have grown tremendously in the past year and become a nice business on their own, they also have strengthened the demand for our traditional print magazines. (Pardon me if I pause here and shout, “Hallelujah!”) Most of us in the magazine business have seen the digital age as an opportunity, not a threat. Unlike newspapers, which saw much of their classified advertising move online and then accelerated their own decline by giving away their print content online, many magazine executives have steadfastly believed people will want beautiful glossies with exciting content on their coffee tables, at the beach and on their night stands for many, many years to come. Adding digital platforms to our business has only helped our physical-media side. Despite tablet devices becoming almost ubiquitous, traditional magazine audiences are growing, even among the mobile device set. While that’s not true for all magazines (news weeklies are an obvious example, and business-to-business magazines are another), luxury lifestyle titles filled with large, gorgeous photography of fascinating people, exotic locations, mouthwatering food, incredible fashion and sparkling jewels are benefiting from the extension the digital products give them. Our team keeps explaining, “It’s all about being a part of the conversation.” Many of us who didn’t grow up with a smartphone keypad in our hands and don’t think anyone can truly have 500 “friends” have had to accept some new definitions for words like “conversation” and “engagement.” What we do in our pages, and with separate content on our websites, is being “talked about” in ways we never dreamed. It is prompting more and more people to become engaged with our brand and amplify our message, quite literally, to every corner of the planet. Each day in this enterprise and in this age is exciting. If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with our magazine. Consider doubling your enjoyment and joining us at palmbeachillustrated.com and weddingsillustrated.net as well as on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. We don’t want you to miss any part of the conversation.

v EDITOR’S LETTER

Power Points ecause our community is populated by some of the world’s most influential people, it makes sense to devote the first issue of 2013 to power. That, of course, comes in many forms, from mighty machines to the ability to alter perspectives or effect change. In this edition of Palm Beach Illustrated, we cover the multiple facets of power. Our cover model, Kristy Hinze Clark, is more than a beautiful face. The Australian supermodel and television personality has been well-known Down Under for years; now she’s making a splash in the Palm Beach area, too. Married to one of the most powerful men on Earth (Netscape co-founder, and billionaire, Jim Clark), Kristy is quietly forging her own path as a philanthropist and entrepreneur—she recently launched her own company of adorable doggie accessories—while maintaining a grounded attitude. She is admirably devoted to Jim and their toddler daughter, Dylan. Read more about the charming Aussie in “A Breath of Fresh Air,” on page 66. Few individuals have impacted the popular culture landscape as photographer Annie Leibovitz has. Annie, who landed onto the scene in the 1970s as a shooter for Rolling Stone, has captured some of the most iconic portraits of celebrities and less known, though no less impactful, personalities. As Palm Beach prepares to receive her during a gala to launch her exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art, we present a few of her most memorable images. Turn to page 98 for an introduction to the “Master of Arts.” And what would a “power issue” be without a look at the world’s hottest supercars? Our resident automotive expert, Howard Walker, dubs these demonic machines “hypercars” for their extreme brawn (1,350 horsepower? Really?) and blistering speeds (more than 200 mph, in most cases). Take a look at Howard’s top 10 hypercars in “Power Brokers,” on page 82. I hope you will join us as we kick off 2013 in style. Enjoy the issue!

Q 3 v NATALIE COLE

Nine-time Grammy award singer Natalie Cole will unleash her vocals January 19 at the Sunrise Theatre and January 23 at the Kravis Center. The daughter of Nat King Cole, Natalie stepped into her own spotlight with her 1975 debut album, Inseparable, which featured the No. 1 hit single “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).” Her career soared with her 1991 album, Unforgettable … With Love, in which she sang a duet with her father’s 1951 recording of “Unforgettable.” Diagnosed with Hepatitis C, Natalie has written books inspired by her struggles and supports awareness campaigns. —Jennifer Pfaff n Can you share an unforgettable memory you have with your father? Going to the movies with my dad to see It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World back in the early ’60s—very funny movie. Dad laughed so hard that he literally fell in the aisle of the movie theatre! n What quote inspires you? I cannot give just one quote—there are too many to list, but one that I like very much is the Serenity Prayer. It is the inspiration for many members of the Bill W Club and Alcoholics and Addicts Anonymous: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” n What’s one of the proudest moments of your career? The proudest moment of my career, I believe, is yet to come.

Mexican hospitality and cuisine are the primary ingredients of a sublime visit to The Ritz-Carlton, Cancún. By Herbert Pérez-Vidal

A jewel amid the fray of Mexico’s popular tourism destination, The Ritz-Carlton, Cancún is more than a luxury hotel: It is an opportunity to step into a a bygone era of refinement and graciousness. And when the innate hospitality of Mexico is added to the equation, the experience becomes truly memorable.

Clockwise from top: The resort sits on Caribbean shores; roasted duck from The Club Grill; the Viking Culinary Center; an oceanfront suite.

One of the resort’s calling cards is its invitation to culinary enthusiasts, beginning with the various dining venues supervised by Executive Sous Chef Michael Grau. Dining on the beach en plein air is an experience not to be missed. Guests are seated in a private, thatched-roof casita with gossamer curtains and candlelight. In this romantic setting, it seems natural to indulge in fresh seafood, such as a presentation of chilled steamed lobster, jumbo shrimp and fresh oysters with king crab legs “sprouting” vertically from a coconut shell in the middle of a large platter. For a laid-back experience, the Caribe Bar & Grill offers alfresco dining overlooking the water. On the menu: brick-oven “Mexican pizzas” on crisp flour tortillas, hamburgers, specialty margaritas and more. Meals can be enjoyed at the restaurant, poolside, on the beach or, best of all, in private cabanas. These beach villas are the same structures that at night are transformed into the dining casitas. 54

The pride of this Ritz-Carlton property is the Culinary Center, where guests enjoy the dishes they prepare themselves in a kitchen fully equipped with Viking appliances. Everyone has to sign a release form, but the chef always checks out students’ knife skills and offers proper instruction. During a class attended by five guests, Chef Rory Dunaway (who recently transferred from Cancún to the new Ritz-Carlton in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico) proffered his own version of a margarita everyone helped make. Later, the group dined on the finished plates of fish and shrimp ceviche, chicken enchiladas and churros for dipping in chocolate sauce. “This offers guests a chance to experience something they—not the chef—created,” Dunaway says. For guests seeking the ultimate in fine dining, Fantino provides the ne plus ultra. Designed as an art nouveau dining emporium, the restaurant transports visitors back to the age of refinement. Chef Gregorio Oy presents Mediterranean cuisine, like a five-course sampling menu that starts with quail and foie gras followed by a superb rack of lamb. The wine list, impressive enough to excite any oenophile, offers an appropriate selection for each course. A tequila tasting is a must for any trip to Mexico, and The Ritz-Carlton provides its own experts to guide those wishing to learn about

the process of making tequila while sampling numerous varieties. Resort guests can get a taste of Yucatán culture by signing up to visit a local market with one of the chefs, who relate their expertise about local products during the excursion. Destination Services, located on the Ritz property, provides touring services. Must-see locales include the Mayan archaeological sites, like Chichén Itzá and Tulum, and Xcaret, an eco-park where visitors experience via music, dance and elaborate costumes the history of Mexico in Xcaret Espectacular. The spectacle is truly breathtaking, rounding out an experience that is nourishment for both body and soul. u

diversions v day trip Changes in Latitudes Fancy something different for dinner? Jet over to Sunset Key for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Clockwise from above: waterfront dining at Latitudes; a charming, Key West-style cottage; aerial island view. 56

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Left to right: Tables overlook the water (and sunset) at Latitudes; the restaurant patio; Aura Jets aircraft have exemplary safety records.

Remember the old saying about the $5,000 cheeseburger? It still holds, but thanks to a partnership between Aura Jets and Latitudes, the beachfront restaurant of Sunset Key, you don’t need your own jet to experience it. Launched in October, the Jet Set Dining program is, in a nutshell, an opportunity to have dinner on the charming island off Key West and be back home by 10 p.m. It begins with a 40-minute Champagne flight in one of Aura’s private aircraft, leaving from Jet Aviation in Palm Beach or the Boca Raton Airport. A driver meets guests on the tarmac of Key West International Airport to transport them to the docks, where a boat awaits (or is en route, in which case more Champagne is poured) to shuttle them to Sunset Key. Alighting on the 27-acre island is an immediate attitude adjustment. Maybe it’s those metal-roofed gingerbread cottages, or the sailboats docked offshore, or the sun dipping toward the western horizon. But more likely it’s the table set up on the sand beneath the palms, a few feet from the water. Torches line the perimeter and, on cool nights, fire pits add ambience—and an extra measure of warmth. That’s the table reserved for the Jet Set Dining experience. There is no preset menu for the program, so indulgence may take many different forms. Some may choose a decadent feast consisting of local seafood classics— coconut-crusted grouper, yellowtail snapper with Florida clams, butter-poached Florida lobster tail—and others may opt for cocktails and dinner by the bite. The smallplate menu features such items as lobster fondue and Key West shrimp with a Bloody Mary shooter. Of course, that cheeseburger is always an option. As the song suggests, a “huge hunk of meat” tastes better in paradise. Jet Set Dining is available for parties of two to six people and is priced from $5,000. PRACTICAL MAGIC

Rarer and more exclusive than any supercar, Mercedes-Benz’s sensational E63 AMG Wagon has the power to move you. BY HOWARD WALKER

Behold the unicorn, the mythical four-legged beast of European folklore so adored and revered for its rarity, purity and grace. Legend has it this exotic equine creature, with its pointy, spiraling horn, could be captured only by a virgin maiden and never tamed. Ladies who were, shall we say, economical with the truth were skewered by that impressive horn. While some time has passed since the last recorded unicorn sighting, there is a modern-day version of this fantastical filly. It’s called the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon. Like the unicorn, chances are you’ll never see one in captivity. You can’t even walk into a Mercedes showroom and take a test drive; they’re available only by very special order and delivered after the handing over of $92,400 with your first-born. Yet they do exist, and for a few brief, fleeting days, I held the keys to a snowy-white example that, just like the wild unicorn, kicked, snorted and refused to be tamed. 58

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Here is the five-door wagon version of Mercedes’ E63 AMG sedan. These days, Americans love wagons as much as a root canal, preferring instead the lofty, high-command driving position and oversized footprint of an SUV. They just don’t know what they’re missing. For here is the perfect melding of searing-hot sports sedan and versatile, carryall wagon. It’s powered by a weapons-grade 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 handcrafted by the power-meisters at AMG that spews out a massive 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Spend the extra $6,550—and why the heck wouldn’t you?— on the optional AMG Performance Pack, and that power output soars to a monstrous 550 horsepower and 590 pound-feet. To put that into perspective, a Lamborghini Gallardo offers a piffling 513 ponies. What this translates into is Exocet missile-like performance. Floor it from standstill, and this asphalt-hugging family-hauler will lunge to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds—and probably do so in the length of the average Starbucks drive-through. Don’t lift, and the speedo will kiss the 186 mph marker. Ooh, and what a soundtrack this beast plays. It’s a deep, throbby, Guns N’ Roses-like bellow amped through a quartet of shiny

“squircle” tailpipes. Think Godzilla gargling with roofing nails and you’ll get the picture. Want to impress your kids when you pick them up from school? Hit the “race start mode” on the center console, keep your left foot hard on the brake, floor the throttle, then step off the brake. The rear tires will light up like Catherine wheels on the Fourth of July, engulfing the car in acrid smoke before depositing two huge tramlines of black rubber. Juvenile, I know. Devilishly entertaining? You bet. There’s a seven-speed AMG automatic to take care of shifting, with beautifully crafted metal paddle shifters for do-it-yourself gear swaps. Select Sport or Sport+, and the gears hold on longer and the revs go higher. And boy, is this fun through the twisties. The steering feels meaty and precise, and I love the salami-thick wheel with its racecar-style, squared-off lower section. With three suspension settings, the sports sedan offers its pick from comfy, no-roll sporty or let’s-head-

to-the-track firm. Inside the 63 is a masterpiece of Teutonic cool, with lashings of taut black leather, brushed metal and high-tech carbon fiber. And front seats don’t come better than these—I love the power side bolsters that boost side support during hard cornering. At the press of a button, the tailgate powers skyward—albeit rather leisurely—doing a neat party trick of raising the load area cover with it. The load space is vast and practically proportioned with nice square sides, and the rear seats are split and easily fold flat to double the amount of load space. A 42-inch flat screen slides in with no problem. Trust me, you don’t need a towering SUV. This could well be my idea of the perfect car. Compact yet spacious, versatile, practical, stylish and obscenely powerful. And, of course, as rare as that unicorn. u

A Breath of Fresh Air From supermodel to supermom, Kristy Hinze Clark leads a charmed yet productive life in Palm Beach. By Linda Marx | photography by NAVID Shot by Palm Beach Illustrated on location at the Clark residence, Palm Beach

“I have developed an almost irrational devotion to animals and their protection and humane treatment.”

n a cool Palm Beach morning, Kristy Hinze Clark arose earlier than usual to care for Dylan, her one-year-old daughter. While the nanny was off, Hinze Clark was happy feeding, changing and playing with the beloved little girl who has changed her busy life from an international supermodel to a doting supermom. “I am so happy being a mother,” says Hinze Clark, 33, who married Jim Clark, co-founder of Netscape, nearly four years ago. “Jim and I are completely overjoyed. Every day, our baby grows more and more beautiful; she looks like Jim. My life is so great.” And, now, so different. The gorgeous, humble and down-to-earth Hinze Clark was discovered at age 14 in her native Australia. She became one of the most famous models in the business after being the youngest Australian to land a one-year exclusive contract with Vogue. Later, as a Ford Model, Hinze Clark was a cover girl for Sports Illustrated, GQ and dozens of other publications as well as a runway model and the face of many international fashion advertising campaigns. More recently, she has appeared on the tenth season of the CW Network’s America’s Next Top Model, was the host and head judge for Project Runway Australia and starred in several music videos for Latin crooner Marc Anthony. She remains the face of Australia’s Sportscraft, a luxury clothing and accessories brand, a gig that regularly takes her home to Sydney. But marrying Clark in 2009, and becoming a mother two years later, has given Hinze Clark the stability and flexibility to pursue other areas of interest. She adopted three miniature schnauzers—Brando and Ava, both 3, and Elwood, nearly 2—and supports two dogs from Fur Angels Rescues in Miami: Suzi, nearly 2, a Chihuahua mix, and Runner, 3, a schnauzer mix. Inspired by her four-legged family members and love of fashion, Hinze Clark launched Legitimutt, a line of winter coats, puffer jackets, warm-weather polos, custom collars and raincoats for dogs. “I could think of nothing more creative than working with three of my best friends as models,” she quips. “The

idea actually came to me while I was looking for something to do while pregnant with Dylan. I was studying online for a degree in environmental biology, but I had baby [on the] brain and found it hard to concentrate on college work. Designing dogwear seemed like the perfect solution.” Because she couldn’t find quality petwear that wasn’t kitsch, Hinze Clark created fashionable, functional outerwear for Legitimutt, like raincoats that also keep dogs’ undersides dry and pants that can act as an incontinence aid. The collection is available at Woof Gang Bakery in Palm Beach, online (legitimutt.com) and at a recently opened retail store and showroom in Miami’s Design District. Through the company, Hinze Clark has been able to further support animal rights causes. She donates some Legitimutt proceeds to animal shelters around the world and has purchased spots on local TV news to raise awareness for Fur Angels. She also hosted a photo shoot for the shelter in her store, which led to the adoption of five little dogs. “The love from my dogs has opened my heart as never before to the importance of the animal world,” she says. “I have developed an almost irrational devotion to animals and their protection and humane treatment. Dogs everywhere are supremely important to me as beautiful, loving, loyal and cognitive beings. I am doing everything I can to make their lives better.” Being around dogs is nothing new to Hinze Clark. Born in the coastal city of Gold Coast, Queensland, she and her three siblings grew up on a dairy farm in the company of corgis, schnauzers, boxers and Rottweilers. Also a devoted horse lover, the Australian tomboy spent her days riding, running and participating in other sports activities. “When I got to be a teen, friends of my parents suggested I be sent to a deportment school near our farm to learn how to act more feminine and ladylike,” she laughs. She did enroll in the school, a move that launched her career when the head of school asked a local modeling agency to attend Hinze Clark’s graduation to see the beautiful girl with the sparkling smile and engaging personality. Her career exploded from there. In 1994, Hinze Clark posed for her first photo shoot, an Australian Vogue cover that ran the following year. Soon after, she caught the attention of palmbeachillustrated.com | JANUARY 2013 69

Neal Hamil, then the business partner of New York modeling powerhouse Eileen Ford. He flew to Australia to meet with Hinze Clark and was blown away by her charm and beauty. “Kristy was, from the moment I first met her, so very special—not only as a rare, true and undeniable beauty, but this huge radiant light beamed from within her,” says Hamil, who has represented her ever since and now runs Legitimutt. “I instantly saw her destiny and knew she was bound for greatness. After that first meeting, I tagged her ‘the Thunder from Down Under.’” At 16, Hinze Clark moved to New York and went on to work with every important fashion photographer, stylist, editor and designer in the industry. She traveled all over Europe and the Far East, always chaperoned by her grandmother, mother or older brother. “It was exciting and daunting because I wasn’t aware of the power of Vogue,” says Hinze Clark, who had to quit high school and study by correspondence. “It was a great adventure, but I found it hard to stay thin. Starving myself is not natural for me, so I had to work out a lot.” Commuting around the world from New York became her way of life until September 11, 2001 destroyed her sense of place. She relocated to Paris for two years, then returned to New York as an Elite Model after Hamil changed companies. In 2005, friends introduced her to Clark at the New York restaurant Cipriani Downtown. She was immediately smitten with the handsome computer genius and sailing enthusiast. “I liked his amazing sense of humor,” she remembers. “He also had the most amazing voice. I was mesmerized.” They dated for four years, during which he brought her to Palm Beach to enjoy Il Palmetto, the oceanfront mansion he bought in 1999 and restored. She adored it, as well as the beauty and tranquility of the whole area. “I loved Palm Beach right away because the weather is like Queensland, so I felt very much at home,” she says. In addition to their homes in Palm Beach and Southampton, the Clarks spend time on their sailing yachts, the 295foot Athena—the fourth-largest sailing vessel in the world— and the 136-foot Hanuman (both are on the market for a combined $113 million). Their wedding was a four-day affair onboard the Athena at Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island and Virgin Gorda. The bride wore an Oscar de la Renta gown with her hair pulled back for what she describes as 70

a relaxed celebration. “Jim and I are both calm and enjoying each other—and being with our close friends and family.” Life in Palm Beach is much the same. She works on dog fashions from her office, continues to study for her college degree, rides and jumps horses, plays golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach and Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, practices yoga and, most importantly, walks Dylan along Lake Trail. At night, the couple favors the Palm Beach Grill, Buccan and Chez Jean-Pierre. Yet their ideal evening is spent dining at friends’ homes or hosting a barbecue for close friends like Bill and Bridget Koch. “Kristy never ceases to amaze me,” Bridget Koch says. “She is a great mother, daughter, wife and animal rights supporter. Whatever she does, she seems to excel at it with an incredible sense of ease. I consider her a very close friend.” For charity, the Clarks put their resources where their interests lie. In addition to animal rights groups, they support the Perlman Music Program, a training program for gifted classical musicians headquartered on Shelter Island near their Southampton residence. They are also active in various environmental organizations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature. Their love for travel may eventually take them to the exotic marine life and coral reefs of the South Pacific for diving, a passion they share. And they haven’t ruled out the possibility of giving Dylan a sibling. “I really would like to have another child,” Hinze Clark says. “We are homey. We love to entertain. POWER No longer does the term “supercar” reflect the awesome power of some of today’s highest-performance sports cars. They’re nothing less than hypercars.

82

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

BY HOWARD WALKER

Back in the ’70s, the world’s most powerful performance cars, like Ferrari’s he-man Daytona or Lamborghini’s Miura, packed a heady 350 horsepower. Today, you can buy a Ford Mustang with 650 horsepower and a Chevy Camaro with 550 horsepower. For our Power Issue, we look at 10 of the most potent hypercars available. Are you ready for 1,350 horsepower?

King of the Hill

POWER FILE Engine: 8-liter quad turbo W-16 Power: 1,200 horsepower at 6,400 rpm Torque: 1,106 pound-feet at 3,0005,000 rpm Transmission: 7-speed automatic 0-60: 2.5 seconds Top speed: 255 mph Price: $2.3 million

BUGATTI Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse What you have here is quite simply the world’s fastest, most powerful production convertible money can buy. With an insane 1,200 horsepower delivered by Bugatti’s 8-liter, 16-cylinder, quad-turbo nuclear reactor, this latest Veyron can warp from standstill to 60 mph in an incomprehensible 2.5 seconds. While this same engine punched a Veyron Super Sport coupe to a record top speed of 267.81 mph last year, in the interest of follicle protection, Bugatti rightly tames the Vitesse’s top speed to a Hair Club For Men-approved 255 mph. Alas, with the carbon fiber hardtop removed and abandoned at home (there’s no place for it inside the vehicle), the car’s aerodynamics go to pot, so you won’t go much faster than 233 mph. But let’s not forget at that speed, the world screams past at a staggering 341 feet every second. Rumor has it this $2.3 million Grand Sport Vitesse—French for “speed,” which seems a little redundant—is the grand finale of the car that changed how we define sports cars when it debuted back in 2003. Grab yours while you can.

The Texas Tearaway HENNESSEY Venom GT Spyder Usually, when a gentleman of a certain age drops $1.1 million on an outrageously quick supercar, your first thought is probably divorce or midlife crisis—or both. But when the sexagenarian is Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler, you think, “That’s cool.” Tyler drove off into the Malibu sunset in the very first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, a new targa-topped version of Texasbased Hennessey Performance Engineering’s insanely fast, obscenely powerful 1,244-horsepower Venom GT supercar. While the Venom is loosely based on the tiny-tot Lotus Elise, it’s as different as night and day. It’s nearly three feet longer and almost six inches wider, and its wheelbase stretches nearly 20 inches to accommodate Hennessey’s manic twin-turbo 7-liter Corvette-based V8. And this new carbon-bodied Venom GT Spyder defines “manic.” Tipping the scales at just 1,244 kilos—that’s 2,743 pounds—and with John Hennessey’s mantra of “one horsepower for every kilo of weight,” the car’s performance is mind-blowing. Off the line, 60 mph comes up in just 2.5 seconds, while top speed— still estimated right now—should be in the region of 275 mph. Our two-word recommendation for Mr. Tyler: heart medication.

POWER FILE Engine: 7-liter twin turbo V8 Power: 1,244 horsepower at 6,500 rpm Torque: 1,200 poundfeet at 5,500 rpm Transmission: 6-speed manual 0-60: 2.5 seconds Top speed: 275 mph (estimated) Price: $1.1 million

POWER FILE Engine: 6-liter twin turbo V12 Power: 720 horsepower Torque: 737 pound-feet Transmission: 7-speed automated manual 0-60: 3 seconds Top Speed: 225 mph (estimated) Price: $1.3 million

Italian stallion PAGANI Huayra Its chassis is made from titanium-infused carbon fiber. Its 720-horsepower V12 engine is handmade especially for the car by Mercedes’ AMG division. It has eight exhaust tailpipes. Oh, and it’s built by a company you’ve probably never heard of. This is the Pagani Huayra, pronounced “why-ra” and loosely meaning “God of the winds” in Quechua. An Argentine businessman-cum-car-designer named Horacio Pagani lovingly bolts it together in Modena, Italy. Pagani has been building midengined, scissor-doored supercars since the late ’90s. His first was the wild-child Zonda, of which more than 200 were built. 84

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

The Huayra takes the Zonda to the next level of driving thrills, using active aerodynamics—little flaps at each corner that, much like a F-16 fighter jet, move independently and alter the down force. Important stuff when you’re blasting into a sweeping righthander at the Nürburgring at 175 mph. And the Huayra does blast. With its midmounted 6-liter AMG twin-turbo V12 with a full head of steam, it’ll reportedly streak from standstill to 60 mph in around three seconds and won’t quit till the speedo is kissing the 225 mph mark. If you have $1.3 million burning a hole in your chinos, Mr. Pagani will happily put you on the waiting list for his new baby, though deliveries stateside won’t start until the summer.

POWER FILE Engine: 5-liter twin turbo V8 Power: 1,140 horsepower at 7,100 rpm Torque: 885 pound-feet at 4,200 rpm Transmission: 7-speed automated manual 0-60: 2.9 seconds Top speed: 273 mph (estimated) Price: $2.5 million

Super Swede KOENIGSEGG Agera R Count from one to 21. Now imagine searing from zero to 186 mph, standing on the brakes and slamming back to zero in 21.19 seconds, to be precise—a new Guinness World Record. Now that’s supercar performance. The Koenigsegg Agera R, Sweden’s newest and finest, shattered this production car record with ease. This $2.5 million carbon-fiber projectile is the creation of Christian von Koenigsegg. Since the early 2000s, he’s been cranking out amazing speed machines considered by supercar aficionados as some of the most sophisticated and technically advanced in the business. The Agera R is a true performance blunt instrument. It gets its

considerable power from a longitudinally midmounted, race-spec 5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 developed in-house by Mr. K. Depending on what kind of fuel you put in its tank—it’s happy to run on ethanol—the big V8 can crank out an almighty 1,140 horses and more than 800 pound-feet of axle-bending torque. Foot to the floor, that translates to zero-to-60 sprinting in 2.9 seconds and a flat-out top speed claimed to be in the region of 273 mph. In the words of those other Swedish legends, ABBA, “Mamma Mia!”

Great Dane ZENVO ST1 50S The nightmare for any supercar owner is to roll up to the valet parker and find there’s an identical model right in front. That’s not going to happen if you sign on the dotted line for a $1.8 million Zenvo ST1. The teeny Danish car maker plans to produce a mere 15 of its 1,104-horsepower two-seaters for the world’s mega rich, and only three will end up in the United States. Why buy a Zenvo when you could buy a Bugatti Veyron? One word: exclusivity. If you have money to burn, chances are you want something no one else has. And it’s the exclusivity and low, low production that supposedly justify the car’s sky-high sticker. Not that there’s a lack of sophistication here. The car’s chassis is a racecar-like space frame of welded steel tubing clad with carbon fiber panels. Its monster supercharged and turbocharged V8, built in-house at Zenvo, is a 16-valve 7-liter not too dissimilar to the motor used in Chevy’s ZR1 Corvette. But boy, does it fly. The big V8 cranks out a massive 1,104 horsepower and 1,053 pound-feet of torque, lunging the featherweight 3,000-pound ST1 from rest to 60 mph in fewer than three seconds, to 120 mph in fewer than nine and on to a claimed top speed of 230 mph. No longer is Hamlet the most fearsome Dane.

POWER FILE Engine: 7-liter turbocharged and supercharged V8 Power: 1,104 horsepower at 6,900 rpm Torque: 1,053 pound-feet at 4,500 rpm Transmission: 7-speed manual 0-60: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 233 mph (estimated) Price: $1.8 million palmbeachillustrated.com | january 2013 85

Bella Macchina FERRARI F12 Berlinetta This beast is a beauty. While supercars can so often look like the manic creation of a 5-year-old with an Etch A Sketch, here is absolute automotive gorgeousness in the jaw-dropping shape of the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Every curve, every crease, every brushstroke is a joy to behold. And then, when you’re about to get all poetic about its style, you twist the key and fire it up. Yowza. Nestled beneath that sculpted hood is a new 6.3-liter, naturally aspirated V12 that conjures up an almighty 730 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of tire-frying torque. Here is quite simply the most powerful, naturally aspirated series-production car in the world, the most potent Ferrari road car ever built.

Automotive nirvana is this megamotor hitting its 8,700 rpm redline. The scream, the howl, the roar, the sheer wall of sound is enough to make a grown man, or woman, sob uncontrollably. All this power being transferred to the seven-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle translates into a three-second lunge to 60 from standstill and a top speed of 212 mph. Ferraristas still canonize Ferrari’s 651-horse Enzo supercar, but the F12 is quicker. As yet there’s no firm price tag on the F12, but we’re reckoning around $330,000 when it lands in the United States in the spring.

LAMBORGHINI Aventador LP 700-4 Always dreamed of flying a fighter jet but are afraid of heights? Here’s your dream come true: Lamborghini’s new Aventador. This 700-horse V12-engined projectile is nothing less than a road-going attack fighter. You even start it by flipping up a red plastic flap with your thumb and pressing the start button, just as if you were strafing the enemy. This replacement for the brutal Murciélago delivers even greater levels of performance and handling. Pedal to the metal and with all-wheel drive delivering power to the blacktop, the Aventador will explode off the line to 60 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, cover the quarter-mile in 10.6 and not quit till it’s low-level flying at 217 mph. Motivation comes from an all-new, super-lightweight 6.5-liter V12 that is deliriously happy to scream all the way to its 8,250 rpm redline. It’s coupled to a seven-speed automated manual that can shift gears in a blink-of-an-eye 50 milliseconds. But it’s the way the Aventador handles itself at the limit that really sets it apart from its predecessor. Compared to the Murciélago, the new carbon fiber chassis is some 150 percent stiffer, its suspension design and traction control systems way more sophisticated. If you can’t quite stretch to a Bugatti Veyron, this new Aventador runs a close second.

Aiming to be the world’s fastest SSC TUATARA In 2007, a little company from West Richland, Washington called Shelby SuperCars set a Guinness World Records production car speed record of 256.18 mph with its 1,183-horsepower Ultimate Aero, unseating the benchmark Bugatti Veyron. While Bugatti eventually grabbed back the record with its Veyron Super Sport, recording 258 mph, Shelby’s credentials as a bona fide supercar builder were established. Next year, Shelby SuperCars—now renamed SSC and no relation to Carroll Shelby—will introduce a new car that could well recapture the top-speed crown. Called the SSC Tuatara, it will pack a staggering 1,350 horsepower and have a targeted top speed of 276 mph. It’s powered by an SSC-designed and built 7-liter twin-turbo V8 that reportedly will rev to an insane 9,200 rpm, blast from standstill to 60 mph in an unthinkable 2.5 seconds and run the quartermile in 9.75 seconds. While the Ultimate Aero always looked a little “kit car-ish,” the Tuatara has been shaped by talented designer Jason Castriota, who has done terrific work at Pininfarina and Bertone. The plan is for the first SSC Tuataras to be delivered early this year, and while there’s no firm pricing yet, expect something over $700,000. All we can say is: Bugatti, beware.

All gone in sixty seconds ASTON MARTIN One-77 Before you ask: No, you can’t buy one. Well, at least not from the factory. But when everything these days has a price, if you make the right call to the right man and with the right wire transfer, you might just acquire one of the 77 Aston Martin One-77 supercars. If that fails, try eBay. What $1.8 million would buy you is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cars ever created. Think of an original Aston Vanquish on steroids, from its air-gulping grille to its vast blistered wheel arches to the gorgeous sweep of its roofline. And this is all about old-school, low-tech brute force. Under the hood is a massive, naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V12 cranking out a staggering 750 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Delivering all this grunt to the rear wheels—no fancy all-wheel drive here—is a positively retro six-speed, single-clutch automated manual. Dial up 4,000 rpm on the tach, foot off the brake and the One-77 will lunge to 60 in 3.5 seconds and continue delivering its tsunami of torque all the way past 200 mph. That’s probably the speed at which the Aston’s price will soar over the next decade. Talk about a terrific investment. 88

Cool Britannia MCLAREN 12C Spider Has it really been three years since McLaren pulled the wraps off its coupe-bodied MP4 12C? My, how time flies. But it’s time for the Brit supercar maker to deliver what its buyers really want: a droptop convertible version. The delicious 12C Spider—McLaren seems to have thankfully dropped the MP4 bit—costs an extra $23,950 over the Coupe, taking the price to $265,750. Nevertheless, this newcomer is expected to account for well over 80 percent of 12C sales. At the punch of a button, the electrically folding two-piece hardtop can be levitated or lowered in just 17 seconds and at speeds up to 19 mph. Top down is all the better for hearing the car’s screaming 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. And what an engine. For 2013, it received a welcome power hike, conjuring up an extra 24 horsepower to bring the tally up to 616 horsepower with max torque right at 442 pound-feet. Now when you bury the accelerator, 60 mph comes up from standstill in 3.1 seconds, while flat out it’ll run to 204 mph. But where the McLaren sets itself apart from the competition is in the truly phenomenal way it handles itself at the limit. Many high-powered go-karts don’t feel this agile. It may not look as pretty or feel as special as a Ferrari 458 Italia, but as a driver’s car, it’s second to none. u

Award season is upon us, and that means it’s time for red carpets, flashy gowns and acceptance speeches. In celebration of Hollywood, PBI asked four Palm Beach designers to create tabletop displays inspired by their favorite films. Here, we present their interpretations of movies old and new, all in homage of cinematic glamour. 90

Lars Bolander was inspired by the bright colors of the 1956 classic The King and I for this tabletop display. Buddhas, Burmese monks and the king’s guards watch over a rich setting of vibrant blues, greens, browns and fuchsias. Authentic Thai umbrellas hover over a table set with Thai dinnerware (complete with chopsticks) and centerpieces of heliconia and ginger lilies in bamboo vases. A textile and tiebacks from India, a pair of painted silk horse prints and bamboo chairs evoke the mood of old Siam, so central to the theme of The King and I.

This question propelled Sean Rush to create a tabletop that fit the scene at Rick’s Café Américain, the bar owned by Humphrey Bogart’s character in the 1942 romantic masterpiece Casablanca. Mary Mahoney took cues from the 2011 Steve Martin comedy The Big Year, which tells the story of three men who embark on a year of birdwatching around the world in a competition to count the most bird species. Running with an avian theme, Mahoney has layered an eclectic mix of bird and leaf prints. Gold and silver chargers from Anna Weatherley and Buccellati, respectively, sit under hand-painted owl plates and Rothschild Bird dinner plates by Herend. Cheeky pieces, like the Cenedese Scavo ducks, counterbalance delicate, elegant objects like Saint Louis crystal goblets, reflecting the mix of humor and sentimentality prevalent in the film.

The exhibition includes 39 of Leibovitz’s works, which will be added to the Norton’s permanent collection. Not all are of celebrity subjects. Some iconic portraits of well-known figures like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Andy Warhol are present, but many of the images are less familiar. The intent was to show the scope of the artist’s work and contemplate the quieter moments of her genius in addition to the portraits that cemented her reputation. —Daphne Nikolopoulos

Florida is one of the top five states for honey production, with more than 250,000 bee colonies creating the sweet stuff, according to the Florida State Beekeepers Association. About 14,000 of those hives belong to Wendy Goldstone and Richard Spinale, a beekeeper of more than 30 years, who together established the Bee Unique store on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach. They curate six kinds of raw honey: clover, wildflower, saw palmetto, cinnamon, orange blossom and tupelo. Collected straight from the hive, raw honey is said to contain a number of health benefits, including antioxidants and antibiotic properties. (561-379-4404, beeuniquehoney.com)

Starry Nights The Naples Winter Wine Festival blasts off to the stratosphere, putting the fun in fundraising. By Mark Spivak

For the thirteenth annual Naples Winter Wine Festival, the chairs and trustees of the festival’s founding Naples Children and Education Foundation chose “When Stars Align” as the theme for the three-day weekend bash touching down January 25-27. Most events, including the charity auction Saturday for more than 500 people, will be centered in a tent erected on the lawn of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. The theme fits perfectly, as the shining lights of the epicurean and wine-making universe come together so harmoniously with the glittering minds behind NCEF to create a blockbuster lineup of dining, bidding and giving. The festival has become the largest philanthropic wine event in the world, raising $107 million since its inception in 2001. The gen-

erosity of the bidders has become legendary. Best of all, the proceeds from the auction go directly toward helping underprivileged and at-risk Collier County children. NCEF conducts studies to determine where the dollars raised will be used most effectively. “We’ve set up a free dental clinic for kids in conjunction with the local University of Florida dental school,” says Bob Edwards, a festival trustee serving as chair along with his wife, Terry. “Last year’s focus was eye care, and we were able to provide two pairs of glasses for each participating child. We discovered there were entire classrooms where no kids could see the blackboard.” From an emotional standpoint, the key moment of the weekend is the Meet the Kids Day Tour and Luncheon, which takes place Friday. Attendees interact with the recipients of NCEF’s funding and hear their life stories face to face. “Sometimes they’re so difficult that you have a hard time listening,” Bob Edwards says. “You can go from laughter to tears very quickly.” The culinary constellations will burn bright at Friday’s series of vintner dinners, inti-

mate affairs for roughly 30 guests each, held in the trustees’ homes. Celebrated chefs come to Naples to prepare the lavish meals, and festival goers are assigned to the dinners in advance. Michael Anthony of Manhattan’s Gramercy Tavern is this year’s Chef de Cuisine. Returning veterans such as Tony Mantuano (Spiaggia, Chicago), Lee Hefter (Spago, Beverly Hills), Julian Serrano (Picasso, Las Vegas) and Michael Tusk (Quince, San Francisco) represent some of America’s highly regarded and sought-after tables with multiple James Beard Foundation awards. They will be joined by other dynamic personalities, such as Kelly Liken (Restaurant Kelly Liken, Vail, Colorado), Vitaly Paley (Paley’s Place, Portland, Oregon) and Barbara Lynch (Menton, Boston). The vintner selection is star-studded as well. A sampling of what to expect: Old World luminaries Piero Antinori of Marchesi Antinori (Florence, Italy), Laurent Ponsot of Domaine Ponsot (Morey Saint Denis, France) and Marc Perrin from Château de Beaucastel (Orange, France). Complementing them are principals representing some of the best estates of Napa Valley, including Kistler Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Shafer Vineyards, Staglin Family Vineyard and Darioush.

The lots feature extraordinary one-of-a-kind experiences, like exclusive excursions to the wine country in Italy, France and California and a cruise through the Greek isles on a 150-foot yacht. As if a private dinner for four couples hosted by Domaine Serene vintners Ken and Grace Evenstad were not an irresistible attraction, this package also includes a visit with William Shatner and the meal prepared by renowned chef Vitaly Paley at the Evenstads’ Oregon home. In addition to three nights at the private Domaine Serene Winery Hill House, the experience includes a tour of the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, to see the legendary Spruce Goose— the largest airplane ever constructed to move troops and material across the Atlantic during World War II. The chance to step inside the cockpit is also on the agenda.

Of course, there will be spectacular lots dedicated to fine wines. Last year’s highest earner was donated by vintner Prince Robert of Luxembourg, president of his family’s Bordeaux estates, which sold twice at $550,000 each. It included eight rare Château Haut-Brion bottles from 1935 to 2009, plus six bottles each of the 2010 vintage of Haut-Brion Blanc and Rouge. The one wine lot every serious oenophile will want to own is the 64-bottle vertical collection of Château Mouton Rothschild. One of the five Bordeaux first growths, Mouton pioneered the concept of the artist’s label in 1945 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild commissioned painter Philippe Jullian to design a special label commemorating the end of the war. Every vintage of Mouton Rothschild since has featured a painting by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol. As

art collectors, Bob and Terry Edwards were intrigued by the concept and assembled the ultimate combination of wine and art. The Mouton lot will have one bottle of every vintage from 1945 through 2009, displayed in a hand-built, temperature-controlled case created by the Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild in the shape of a dining room table with a glass top that allows guests to admire the labels as they have dinner. While the excitement of the festival and auction attracts so much attention, the true center of this universe will always be the Collier County children and their families, whose lives are so positively changed by the dollars raised. That’s the real star power. u

French Accent In the world of haute cuisine, Palm Beach’s Café Boulud is the crème de la crème. By Mark Spivak

Lobster salad; smoked salmon.

108 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

When Café Boulud opened in July 2003, it brought a new and exciting dimension to Palm Beach dining. Daniel Boulud may not have been spending the winter at an island condo, but the kitchen was in the hands of Zach Bell, one of his longtime protégés. Like its Manhattan namesake, the menu was divided into four distinct parts: La Tradition (classic French and country cooking), La Saison (the rhythm of the seasons), Le Potager (inspired by the farmer’s market) and Le Voyage (world cuisine). Bell departed toward the end of 2011 and was replaced by Jim Leiken, who had worked in Boulud’s New York restaurants since 2001. Leiken has brought a light and graceful style to the menu, an aura of elegance compatible with the decor and service. Dinner at Café Boulud today is a delightful experience, and no one in Palm Beach is doing it better. Begin with one of the classics, such as the signature smoked salmon—so light and fluffy you may find yourself reflexively reaching for a bagel—or a trio of roasted red, golden and Chioggia baby beets. An appetizer of ricotta agnolotti ($19) is perfectly cooked al dente and garnished with corn, smoked mozzarella and tomato confit. A Thai version of lobster bisque ($16) is spicy and satisfying, infused with lime, mint, basil and fried ginger; the texture is augmented with rice noodles. For a seasonal entrée, a whole Maine lobster ($41) is grilled and shelled, accompanied by wild mushrooms and fava beans and scented with chicken stock and tarragon. Grilled loup de mer, or Mediterranean sea bass, arrives with eggplant baba ghanoush, crushed zucchini and fried artichokes.

palate v taste A dry aged rib-eye steak ($48) is expertly cooked and remarkably tender, topped with savory porcini butter and served with pommes frites cooked in the traditional duck fat. Desserts stand alone. The seasonal classic Peach Melba ($11) features fresh Georgia peaches, raspberries and a raspberry beer sorbet, sitting atop a whole-wheat cookie stuffed with raspberry jam. The mint chocolate pavé is a dark chocolate terrine oozing chocolate, infused with the flavor of mint and served with a chocolate sorbet. If that’s too rich, try a trio of house-made ice creams: pistachio, chocolate and calisson (also seasonal) that will transport you to Provence. Just when you think you can’t handle another bite, a basket of warm madeleines materializes, dusted with powdered sugar, escorted by a small tray of mignardises. Compiled by sommelière Mariya Kovacheva, the wine list is a collection of

nearly 500 carefully chosen gems, with the bargains clearly marked in the Sixty Under $60 section. You may indulge in a bottle of Domaine Leflaive Montrachet for $2,596, but you can also enjoy a delicious Whispering Angel rosé from Château D’Esclans for $36. An excellent selection of wines by the glass is available as well. Service is gracious and relaxed, beginning with the greeting at the door and extending throughout the evening. If staffers feel the pressure of maintaining an experience at this level, they don’t show it. As with many other aspects of the restaurant, there are tempting choices in seating. The main dining room is warm and comfortable, decorated in rich autumn tones and framed with modern art. In good weather, though, the lush courtyard is the place to be. In season, especially, you’d be wise to reserve—in more ways than one. u

Is this the same Sinclairs Ocean Grill? Where are the dustorange walls and white tablecloths? They’ve been replaced by contemporary white and mahogany furnishings, tall pieces of driftwood and touches of aqua for a sophisticated look inspired by the beach—an appropriate muse, considering the restaurant, located in the Jupiter Beach Resort, is the coastal town’s only oceanfront dining location. The renovations, which were completed in the fall, include the addition of a bar and an expanded seating area partitioned by translucent curtains. The adjacent Sinclairs Lounge received a similar makeover, while the outdoor terrace, which overlooks the breezy Atlantic, was given a covered roof. The new decor complements the updated menu, which was reworked to focus on seafood dishes like yellowtail snapper with a tomato basil relish in a white wine caper sauce. Starters include lobster crab cakes with a mango chipotle aioli and a “microsalad” of baby greens. Anchovies appear in the Caesar salad, which is doused in a generous portion of dressing, as any good Caesar should be. For dessert, we recommend the trio of crème brûlée. Most portions are small, so you may have to order several, but it’s not hard to find something for everybody, including gluten-free and vegan plates, as well as desserts. The wine menu offers 50 selections plus Champagne, and proceeds from the restaurant’s signature drink, the “Tapatini,” go to the AIDS fund. (561-333-7331, redtapasbar.com)

At most barbecue restaurants, the flavor is found in the sauce bottle. Bobbi Sue Bar-B-Que puts the flavor focus where it should be: on the meat. Texas native and self-trained chef Shannon Miller perfected his cookout concept growing up in the heart of barbecue country, bringing an authentic cooking style to Clematis Street’s new barbecue joint. The slow-cooked ribs, for instance, have more texture than fall-off-the-bone varieties, requiring a bit of a tug, and are seasoned with a slew of spices (can you detect the hint of coffee beans?). While the smoked meat is flavorful bare, those who still want a bit more tang can dress it in one of four house sauces—always served on the side. (561-838-9099, bobbisuebbq.com)

We Believe that “ROI” Should Stand for more than “Return on Investment.” Let’s start with Return of Investment. In an uncertain and quickly changing economy, the security of your assets becomes paramount. Which is precisely what your financial planners should be thinking. As fiduciaries, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of responsibility and trust. Your interests come first — always. Which is why we never take a commission, insist that our clients maintain complete access to their money and assets, and implement only customized financial planning and investment strategies.

The Raw Deal There’s no better way to start the day than with a cold glass of juice. When that juice is 100 percent raw and organic, made from local produce and delivered to your door, you have the recipe for not only a bright day but a healthy life as well. OnJuice uses a cold-pressed process to extract crucial nutrients from fruits and vegetables. Pressed only when you order, OnJuice is delivered within hours of production, ensuring freshness and the greatest benefits possible, including improved digestion and nutrient absorption. But how does it taste? Well, with intriguing flavor combinations such as watermelon, cucumber and honeydew, or apples, carrots and cinnamon, your taste buds will love you—and so will your waistline. Healthy New Year A new year means new resolutions. This year, resolve to kick bad habits and replace them with better ones. If quitting smoking is at the top of your list, take advantage of the services offered by the Florida Department of Health. The Florida Quitline is a toll-free telephone service that provides counseling sessions and nicotine replacement therapy. If you feel the pang of addiction with your morning coffee or before bed, fret not; Quitline services and an online coach are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (1-877-U-CAN-NOW, quitnow.net/florida) Looking to drop a few pounds in 2013? Take advantage of the outdoor fitness park in Lake Worth. The Tropical Ridge Fitness Park, located at 211 N. H St., opened in late 2012 and offers free use of $65,000 worth of outdoor exercise equipment. Those aged 14 and older have access to chin-up bars, a cross-country ski machine, an elliptical walker and a chest press. Finally, if you have vowed to eat better, sample the goods at Francesca’s Terra Verde Farm Club. Each week, Francesca Golub, a former chef and food writer, and her team collect freshly harvested fruits and vegetables from local farms. Members of her club then place orders for produce and meat (hormone- and antibiotic-free, of course) and pick them up at Francesca’s Jupiter location. Unlike supermarkets, Francesca’s guarantees the carrot you’re eating tonight was in the ground fewer than 48 hours ago. Annual membership for the club is $50 the first year and $15 each year after. Delivery services and home-cooking classes are also available. (561-401-9123, terraverdefarmclub.com) Francesca Golub

laser technology Laser procedures are growing in popularity as an alternative to plastic surgery. In Palm Beach County, many dermatologists are offering specialized laser treatments for everything from wrinkles to redness. u Dr. Diane Walder, a dermatologist based in Bay Harbor Islands with an office in Delray Beach, offers a number of laser treatments. Laser genesis uses a single wavelength to treat fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin texture, redness and scars. By heating the upper dermis of the skin, the laser stimulates collagen regrowth, resulting in improved overall skin appearance. u Limelight, also offered by Walder, is a device that uses a spectrum of wavelengths to target vascular and pigmented cells while leaving healthy ones untouched. This process can be done on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands and legs and is an effective treatment for photoaging, damage caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. (305-8662177, dianewaldermd.com) u In Boca Raton, Dr. Jacob D. Steiger, employs a variety of procedures that utilize the Excel V laser. In 15-30 minutes, the Excel V laser can treat numerous skin conditions by using a wavelength that targets vascular lesions. In addition, the Excel V Laser can aid in post-surgery bruising, lessening the downtime following surgical procedures. (561-499-9339, drsteiger.com)

Veggie Vindication A popular school nutrition education program is taking its healthy eating lessons outside the classroom. Veggiecation, taught in elementary schools throughout the United States and Canada, has developed an At-Home Kids’ Culinary Package so parents can teach their children about smart eating choices from the comfort of their own kitchens. The kit costs $23.99 and includes a family recipe book, kid activity books, an audio CD and “I Tried It” stickers to reward children when they eat their vegetables. veggiecation.com

Give Life

Since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor

Month. Blood donations are often in short supply during the winter months, so this is the perfect time to help. In Florida, donors must be 17 years old (16 with parent permission) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Community Blood Centers of South Florida and Florida’s Blood Centers both have donation centers throughout South Florida. When you donate blood, you are helping community hospitals treat emergency patients, victims of traumas and people with cancer and other chronic illnesses, among others. To make an appointment or learn more about donor eligibility, visit cbcsf.org and floridasbloodcenters.org.

Shedding New Light

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter

have made great strides toward explaining how genetic mutations found in childhood can lead to severe cognitive and behavioral problems. A study led by Gavin Rumbaugh (left) found many children with severe intellectual and behavioral impairments possess mutations in a protein that plays a crucial role in development. This discovery shows, for the first time, a causative link between abnormal synapse maturation during development and life-long cognitive problems. Scripps is now looking to determine the optimal time to repair these mutations, which may be very early in life. (561-228-2000, scripps.edu)

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I realized that this wasn’t a dress rehearsal. Thanks to 3D mammography, I’m thankful to be here with my daughter to see her grow and build a beautiful life.” — Lori Cote, Breast Cancer Survivor, Mother, Businesswoman

Do you know your risk for breast cancer? At the Margaret W. Niedland Breast Center, 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) is available. This leading edge technology increases the detection of cancer, allowing radiologists to look at the tissue in three dimensional slices, one millimeter at a time. 3D mammography is provided at no additional cost. To learn more about 3D mammography, visit jupiterbreastcare.com/tomo. To schedule an appointment, call (561) 263-4414 and ask for 3D mammography.

This interactive exhibit is a history lesson in disguise, allowing viewers to explore the timeline of American fashion through touchscreen displays. A supplementary exhibit titled, “Draw and Shoot: Fashion Illustrations and Photographs from the Collection,” which captures fashionable moments on camera or paper, complements “IMPACT” like a pearl necklace to a Chanel suit. 1. What is the history of Palm Beach? Palm Beach was established by Henry Morrison Flagler in 1894 when he opened the Royal Poinciana Hotel. The population is 10,468 and the town is one of the most popular destinations for wealthy vacationers, royalty and celebrities.

2. What is the architectural style most prevalent on the island? The town was largely built in the 1920s as the newfound wealth for the new kind of American royalty. The opulence of the era was reflected by a few architects who were quickly embraced by high society. Two of the most celebrated architects were Addison Mizner, whose Venetian-inspired buildings still exist, and Maurice Fatio, whose style celebrated the Italian Renaissance. Other noted architects were Marion Sims Wyeth, Howard Major and John Volk. 3. What is the average price and sale activity for the third quarter, and what should sellers and buyers expect? Compared to the prior year’s third quarter, the number of sales in the third quarter jumped 45.5 percent to 64 units. The number of sales to date is at its second-highest level in more than six years. Median sale price increased 3.3 percent from the prior year’s quarter, while the average sale price and average price per square foot increased 6.5 percent and 27.7 percent, respectively. The overall outlook is positive, as homes are on the market two months fewer than last year. This indicates sellers and buyers are moving closer together on price and expectations. 340 royal Poinciana Way, Suite 322a, Palm Beach 561-655-8600 | ellimanflorida.com SPECIaL PrOMOTIOnaL FEaTurE palmbeachillustrated.com | JANUARY 2013 183

Traviata Tryst On January 18, the Palm Beach Opera opens its 2013 season with La Traviata. Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece flopped when it premiered in 1853 (casting an overweight actress to play a woman dying of consumption didn’t help), but it became one of the most beloved operas of the modern age. In Palm Beach, Joyce El-Khoury and Sarah Joy Miller share the role of Violetta, while Georgy Vasiliev and David Miller both portray Alfredo. We’re confident the Palm Beach Opera’s interpretation will be better received than Verdi’s premiere. —Mary Gibble 184 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
