From the Publisher

Each February, our region becomes the place to be for any cultural pursuit. This month welcomes the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show, where you can go home with a rare work of art or attend a lecture by a renowned expert. The Kravis Center is also staging major productions, including the Tony Award-winning War Horse. And in Miami, the South Beach Food & Wine Festival presents the culinary talent of acclaimed chefs such as Rick Bayless, Michelle Bernstein and April Bloomfield. With all these goings-on and then some, we are awash in significant events international movers and shakers want to attend. This is also the time of the year to head to Wellington for the Equestrian Sport Productions’ fifth annual FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge. Presented by Fidelity Investments, the relaystyle equestrian jumping competition is an exciting event that awards more than $1.5 million to local nonprofits. Thirty-four teams—consisting of two junior or amateur riders and one Olympic or world-class rider—are each randomly paired with a Palm Beach County charity to represent. All prize money goes to the charities, and no one leaves empty-handed: Each is guaranteed at least $10,000, and to date more than $4.2 million has been donated. Held February 1, the Great Charity Challenge is a fun afternoon for the entire family—and the community. We are proud to be the exclusive magazine sponsor of two worthy events being held this month. On February 15, The Everglades Foundation will host its annual ForEverglades benefit at The Breakers. We have long admired this organization, which works tirelessly to restore the Everglades. A number of key restoration projects underway statewide will help transform the River of Grass into a healthier ecosystem that provides recreational, economic and environmental benefits for Florida residents. And on February 27, the bidding will commence at the Center for Family Services’ Old Bags Luncheon, also at The Breakers. There are many fabulous new bags attendees can bid on to support the center’s programs that assist children who have suffered from abuse or homelessness. Comedian Darrell Hammond, best known for his impersonations on Saturday Night Live, will be there to share his personal story. Read our exclusive interview with him on page 35. Clearly, this is the month to get out and buy yourself a bauble (or two), connect with friends and family at feel-good events and continue to support the myriad charitable causes in our backyard. Have fun!

LOVING EVERY MINUTE

couple’s inspiring story, as well as gorgeous photos of them shot locally at the Hanley (her parents’) residence, starting on page 70. We also explore a different kind of relationship—that of artist and muse—with a story on Jane Holzer, whose surreal rise to fame in the 1960s is chronicled in this month’s exhibit, “To Jane, Love Andy,” at the Norton Museum of Art. For those who remember—or at least have read the stories about—“Baby Jane” and the man who propelled her to stardom, Andy Warhol, the exhibit is a must-see. And our profile of Holzer, written by Hollywood biographer Scott Eyman, is a must-read. Turn to page 78. Since we’re devoting the issue to the passions driving connoisseurship, we cannot ignore one of the most enduring desires of all—automobiles. We feature something for everyone: automotive guru Howard Walker’s insightful roundup of collectible classic cars (“For the Love of Classics,” page 92), and a visual indulgence juxtaposing racecars and fashion (“Jump Start,” page 82). The latter, shot at Palm Beach International Raceway by L.A. photographer Richard Reinsdorf, is certain to spark a zeal for fast machines (including a super-rare 1956 Ferrari 290 MM) even in those without a fondness for the newest embroidered mesh dress by Valentino. There is plenty more to love—our guide to the area’s top romantic tables for those getting ready to pop the question (page 108) and advice on planning a romantic dinner at home (page 126), for example—with more Valentine’s Day content on palmbeachillustrated.com and on our social media channels. Enjoy!

It’s about time a raw/vegan café, market and juice bar came to downtown West Palm Beach! I’m loving Bee Organics (behind Bradley’s, on Datura) for green juices and quick, healthy lunches— the marinated kale and quinoa salad is a favorite.

It’s February, the month of love and romance. What better time to celebrate the passions that fuel us and bring us joy? We begin with our cover story on Nicole and Matthew Mellon. Anyone who’s spent time with these two knows they are madly in love—and, as our article suggests, “Two of a Kind.” Their personalities are perfectly aligned, as are their talents. And now they are putting both to productive use with the launch of their new clothing line, Hanley Mellon, and the relaunch of their tastemaker website, hanleymellon.com. I invite you to explore the

This Valentine’s Day, replace the cake and cookies for a more hands-on dessert: chocolate-dipped strawberries, fondue-style. An important tip: When choosing the right chocolate, know your audience. Semisweet chocolate is perfect for those who enjoy sweet tastes. For those who savor the earthiness of dark bittersweet chocolate, we recommend Theo Chocolate’s Pure 70% ($4 for 3 oz.)—it’s organic, fair trade and made with non-GMO cocoa. Ingredients 16 oz. chocolate of your choice 1⁄2 cup heavy whipping cream 3 tbsp. favorite liqueur (Chambord, Frangelico and Amaretto are good choices) Optional: 1⁄2 cup caramel Place all ingredients into a fondue pot and stir continuously over low heat until melted and smooth. Keep from bubbling— this will burn the chocolate. Then, dip away. Great dipping options include fresh strawberries, sliced bananas, pound cake and marshmallows.

Insider 3Q

DARRELL HAMMOND

Darrell Hammond has worn many faces: Bill Clinton, John Travolta, Sean Connery, Jay Leno and Donald Trump, to name a few. Known for his versatile and accurate impersonations, Hammond was the longest-running cast member on Saturday Night Live, performing on the show from 1995 to 2009. Yet off camera, the comedian struggled with serious issues of addiction and trauma as a result of childhood abuse. Hammond detailed his journey to recovery in a bestselling book that is now being adapted into a Broadway play, and he will share his story at The Breakers on February 27 for the Center for Family Services’ Old Bags Luncheon. Tickets cost $350, and proceeds support the center’s efforts to help children who suffer from domestic violence, sexual abuse or homelessness. Chris Matthews. He’s not just a colorful guy; his personality lends itself to delivering snappy, quick one-liners that get the kind of explosion that makes you feel like you’ve done your job as a comedian. Hands down one of the funniest dudes I’ve ever met in person. As a child, what or whom did you turn to for hope or happiness to get through difficult times? I was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. [and] his words “truth crushed to earth will rise again.” It made me hope that one day it would be safe to tell my story. In your opinion, what can be done to change the culture of childhood abuse? Promoting the idea that mental illness is not an airborne virus. It comes from somewhere specific. Whenever you see a monster, you should look for the other monster who created him/her. Monsters cannot make themselves.

Water Flight It looks like a scene from a James Bond movie: someone being propelled high above the Intracoastal by a stream of water, flying through the air while connected to a thick hose. It’s the thrilling experience of a jetpack ride, and it’s happening at the West Palm Beach waterfront courtesy of Relentless Watersports, which set up shop late last year. Licensed flight instructors coach participants through a 20-30-minute water jetpack flight for $179-$249 Tuesday through Friday or for $199-$279 on weekends. The team also offers private choreographed nighttime shows featuring jetpacks with LED lights—a unique entertainment option for waterfront home parties. (410-390-2384, relentlesswatersports.com)

Jetpack experiences are also available in Riviera Beach.

The Hope Designer Showcase features rooms arranged by Scott Snyder (top) and Bruce Bierman (right), along with three other designers.

love and romance, palm beach-style Four local couples share personal anecdotes from their own love stories Steve and Karen Weagle (as told by Steve) There wouldn’t be a Mr. and Mrs. Weagle if it wasn’t for my wife. We had a six-month courtship even before our first date. I was a shy 20-something working in a mall photo store, and I noticed this cute country girl coming in frequently to pick up photos or buy film. Through mutual friends, we found out we were attracted to each other, but I was way too shy to make the first move. After almost half a year of waiting on me to ask her out, she had enough and called me. She’s never let me live it down. Steven Stolman and Richard Wilkie (as told by steven) Since Wisconsin does not recognize same-sex marriage, our plan was to get married at the marriage bureau in Lower Manhattan and then fly to Milwaukee for our reception. Hurricane Sandy blew those plans out the window. With Lower Manhattan flooded and power out in so much of the area, the only marriage bureau open was in the Bronx by Yankee Stadium. So, just like TV’s Rhoda Morgenstern, we took the subway to our wedding. The most wonderful deputy clerk, a grand gal who looked like Whoopi Goldberg, asked us, “Would you like me to read from the script or speak from the heart?” Of course we chose “from the heart” and I cried like a baby. After she pronounced us married, she said, “And Top to botnow you may hug me!” tom: Karen Once we got to Milwaukee, everything fell into place. and Steve Weagle; Steven The city positively sparkled, surprising our jaded East Stolman and Coast friends who thought they were going to NoRichard Wilkwheresville. We wouldn’t have done it any other way. ie; Monique and Harvey Oyer; Vesna and Laurence Leamer. 38

Harvey and Monique Oyer Harvey and Monique were introduced to each other by

a mutual friend via telephone. She was in Milan; he was in West Palm Beach. “We spent hours and hours on the phone and fell in love with each other without ever having met face-to-face,” Harvey says. “We fell in love with each other’s souls, not each other’s looks,” Monique adds. What a pleasant surprise it was for Harvey when he first laid eyes on the lady with whom he had developed a heart connection—she was a 5-foot-10, gorgeous former runway model. And Monique was happy and relieved to find that Harvey Eugene Oyer III, the man who had charmed her over the phone with his kind heart, brilliance and wit, also happened to be young and devilishly handsome. They’ve been inseparable since. Laurence and Vesna Leamer (as told by Laurence) Thirty years ago, I was a member of the Shoreham Club during the summers in Washington, D.C. One day after taking my daily swim, I was sitting with half a dozen of my friends, all of them women. The tennis pro came swaggering up, escorting a highly attractive young woman. “This is Vesna Obradovic, visiting from Belgrade,” the pro said. “I’m giving her a lesson after I finish with my present client.” “Hello,” my women friends said in unison. “Hello,” Vesna said in an accent that sounded like Zsa Zsa Gabor on steroids. Vesna’s parents were divorced. Her father lived in Belgrade, where he was president of Philip Morris in Yugoslavia, and her mother lived in Washington, where she did a nightly program for the Voice of America. Vesna had never dated an American and was thinking only of returning to Belgrade when she took one look at me and had the strangest thought: She would end up marrying me. “Do you know your T-shirt is inside out?” she asked. There stood my destiny: I could get up, run away and live a life of inside-out T-shirts, or I could make polite chatter, get her phone number, ask her out and reform my bachelor ways. We’ve been married all these years, and my T-shirts are rarely inside out.

Power Woman Who: Belgian-born fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg, founder of DVF The Look: Garments that convey female confidence and strength Known for: Creating the signature jersey wrap dress in 1974 Personal Backstory: Before launching her label, she was married to the late Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, also a fashion designer, and raised by a mother who survived the Auschwitz concentration camp.

There is nothing more inspiring than a woman who knows her own strength.

By Jennifer Pfaff You created the iconic wrap dress 40 years ago. Why do you think it has had such lasting power? You know, I had no idea the wrap dress would become such a phenomenon. It was such a simple little dress, but it was a dress that allowed women to go to work and still feel like a woman. It gave them independence and confidence when that was exactly what they needed. But really, I think it is a dress that is all about the woman, and that is what has made it timeless. Tell us about your latest collection. Spring 2014 is called Oasis, and it is all about finding serenity and beauty in the unexpected. The colors are black and white with pops of bright blue and dreamy sunset neutrals. The silhouettes are also important, from a corset and flare skirt combo to chic tunics over pants and sleek column dresses that flatter the body. Your garments exude qualities you possess: glamour, sexiness and confidence. How do you harness these qualities in your personal life, and how do you convey them in your aesthetic? Thank you. I think it is really the confidence that leads to glamour and sexiness. It is all about joie de vivre and being true to yourself. So I try to be true to who I am and hope that it comes through in my life and my designs. Do you have a muse? I am inspired by all women. I have never met a woman who is not strong. And there is nothing more inspiring than a woman who knows her own strength. What’s your must-have fashion for spring? The corset top is really important, and the column dress. And something black and white, like a zebra-printed tunic.

Who has had the biggest influence on your life? My mother, Lily. She was a very strong woman and she always taught me that fear was not an option. She was a Holocaust survivor and she was not meant to have a child, but then I was born. It was really a miracle. She told me that she survived in order to give me life. So that has been my flag to carry, and it has always kept me going. It has made me more willing to take risks and to fail, which is so important because your failures are really your lessons.

Where traditional meets avant-garde are the hotels of the Maybourne Group. Here are five reasons why they should be central to your London experience. By Daphne Nikolopoulos

London is all about tradition. And about cutting-edge innovation. That dichotomy, the English capital’s most charming quality, is celebrated in the three ultra-luxe hotels of the Maybourne Group—the Berkeley, Claridge’s and the Connaught. Though all three have been fixtures on London’s social scene since the nineteenth century, they constantly reinvent, artfully blending the old with the new. Within their luxurious confines, you may rub elbows with titled society in an authentic art deco lobby or enjoy a gin-tonic in a hypermodern bar, all while being looked after by some of the most intuitive professionals in the business. What follows is our curated, and highly subjective, list of the top five Maybourne experiences now.

THE MAP ROOM, Claridge’s—During

1 56

THE FASHION TRUNK, the Berkeley— If you are staying in one of the signature suites of this Knightsbridge gem, you must request the Fashion Trunk. Moments later, a sumptuous white leather steamer trunk will be delivered to your doorstep. Open it and gasp: Inside is a trove of vintage accessories, including a By Walid Victorian feather and pearl brooch, a 1960s Courrèges bracelet, 1940s mother-of-pearl cufflinks for the gents, a Christian Dior brooch and earring set from the 1950s, and a stunning fox stole with jet beading, circa 1970. There are some 20 items in all, each more delicious than the next, curated by Atelier-Mayer. Incredibly, this service is free. Choose the accessories you want, wear them out on the town and return them to their luxuriously lined drawers—or, if you fall madly in love, add them to your folio. (the-berkeley.co.uk)

the era of British exploration, something as seemingly ordinary as a map was utterly romanticized. It was not simply an arrangement of countries; it was an instrument delineating a journey and whispering the promise of adventure. Some things never change—nor should they. As a nod to the golden era of travel, Claridge’s has unveiled the Map Room, a 24/7 space that is part business center, part first-class travel lounge and part explorer’s club. The showpiece is—what else?—a full-wall map crafted of inlaid macassar and walnut veneers. It presides over sexy red carpet, a high-backed salon sofa, plush reading chairs and walls stacked with books and literary magazines. One is meant to do business here, but the space invites much more than that. The spark of an idea here, a rush of creativity there … It all seems to flow while ensconced in the Map Room’s luxurious womb. (claridges.co.uk)

The Linley-designed Map Room showcases the firm’s signature marquetry work, as well as lipstick-red accents and provocative lines.

THE LINLEY SUITES, Claridge’s—Restyling London’s art deco gem requires a skilled hand. The Claridge’s heritage, which marks it as one of the city’s most storied hotels, must be honored even as its spaces are rethought for the present and future. That task could have gone to none other than David Linley—furniture genius, royal family member and longtime friend of the property. Linley has redone 11 of the suites—some art deco, some traditional—with remarkable sensitivity to the past. The deco suites, inspired by the hotel’s legendary redesign in the 1920s, are true expressions of the era, featuring such original pieces as marble and silver fireplaces, vanity tables and inlaid wood headboards, as well as stunning silver fluted columns, silver ceiling details and etched glass accents. “Dripping with decadence” is not hyperbole. The deco suites are designed in blue-andcream and lilac-and-silver color schemes.

055-Escape-0214.indd 57

THE MARTINI TROLLEY, the Connaught— There are martinis, and there are martinis. The latter is not a simple swill crafted by shaking together gin and dry vermouth; it is a study in subtlety and form, more a ceremony than a mere cocktail. And where can such a martini be found? Only at the Connaught Bar, that stalwart of British tradition, so iconic it was named World’s Best Hotel Bar by Tales of the Cocktail in 2010. A martini here is a bespoke beverage, made to order tableside by a white-gloved mixologist who understands the nuances of the perfect drink. He wheels over a black lacquer trolley with various gins (and, if you must, vodkas) and a selection of bitters—yes, bitters. The original martini recipe, dating back to the 1850s, consisted of Old Tom gin, orange curacao, Boker’s bitters and a dash of sugar. Time and evolving palates changed many of the ingredients, but the addition of bitters remains an integral part of the experience, according to the Connaught. You are asked to sniff seven different bitters (lavender, coriander, cardamom, ginger, grapefruit, licorice and vanilla) and indulge your mood. The ingredients are stirred—not shaken; sorry, Bond—with silver utensils in a Japanese crystal mixing jar and served in crystal stems. Truly perfection in a glass. For a bit of country in the midst of the city, head to the Bamford Haybarn Spa and its open-air, rooftop pool.

5

THE BAMFORD HAYBARN SPA, the Berkeley— That profoundly British experience of pausing from city life to take in the splendors of the country does not exist only outside London. With the arrival of the Bamford Haybarn Spa at the Berkeley, that privilege can be had even in the midst of endless appointments and choked traffic. Lady Bamford, of Bamford and Daylesford fame, is known for her allegiance to natural products, sustainability and organic farming. She’d long wanted to bring her vision to London, so when the rooftop of the Berkeley came available she seized the

opportunity. The setting couldn’t be more perfect. With its open-air pool and garden, the seventh floor offers a breath of fresh air and a welcome dose of quiet simplicity. The spa underscores Bamford’s connection to nature with organic products, mindful treatments and even a retail area that sells gorgeous (and color-free) cottons and cashmeres. After a treatment (the hot and cold jade massage alone merits the hop across the pond), a swim in the heated pool is de rigueur—but if you can’t manage that, opt for a light lunch with a view of the Knightsbridge rooftops. Either way, rejuvenation is assured. «

Jet Set JASON ARBUCKLE

Best of British Before he settled in Florida, Jason Arbuckle lived in London for nearly 15 years while working as design director for renowned book publishers and fashion magazines in the city. After taking time off to traverse the globe, he chose Palm Beach as his home base. The former graphic designer still travels regularly to England to find new markets for J. Falkner, the stationery company he founded on the island in 2011.

Personality: The mix of old and new makes London the most exciting city in Europe now. Marvelous old heritage sits next to the latest trends in fashion, design and architecture. Soundtrack: Emeli Sandé’s cool, rich voice is heard from cafés to clubs. Fashion essentials: A cool pair of boots that won’t be shy around rain for the day and something skinny in the evening. London fashion is still tailored very slim. Local dish you dream about: It’s worth the fight for a table at the Ivy just to have the sticky toffee pudding. (the-ivy. co.uk) Best way to spend a free morning: Experience London’s hipster ’hood, Shoreditch. Fortify yourself with a great English breakfast at the Albion Café, then stroll nearby Redchurch Street for the trendiest stores in London. (albioncaff.co.uk) A must-do experience not in the guidebooks: Hop on a “Boris bike” (the city bikes are nicknamed after the mayor). London streets may look intimidating, but there’s nothing better than taking a bike for a spin; the city suddenly opens up to you.

BORIS BIKE

Best seat in town: Go high up in the London Eye Ferris wheel and spy Buckingham Palace’s enormous private garden. (Sure, it’s touristy, but everyone should do it once.) If you prefer to be more grounded, get an outdoor table at Scott’s in Mayfair, where London’s power brokers gather to smoke between courses. (scotts-restaurant.com) Hometown good to sample and stockpile: Get thee to Fortnum & Mason’s for the most charming packaging in town. The tea caddies and biscuit tins, with designs reminiscent of old Empire, are perfect presents for friends back home. (fortnumandmason.com) Guilty pleasure shop: As a stationery and leather-goods junkie, I’m a kid in a candy shop at the original Smythson’s store on New Bond Street. Plus, they monogram on site, making it especially hard to leave without one of the trademark Nile Blue boxes. (smythson.com) Unwritten rule the locals live by: The famous English frostiness is just a façade. Maggie Smith is playing a role—real Londoners are much friendlier.

Sunset View

A tiny private isle off Key West may well be the quintessential Florida Keys experience By Daphne Nikolopoulos

It’s evening, coming up on 7:30. Not that any of us is wearing a watch. Here, you tell the time by gazing at the sky—the wisps of pale gold that slowly turn saffron, then umber until the horizon is ablaze in color—and by the frenzied clicks that accompany the spectacle as all cameras point west. On Sunset Key, everything stops for the nightly event for which the island is named. At Latitudes, the island’s surfside restaurant, no one seems to pay attention to the Florida lobster tail or coconutcrusted grouper. One by one, we all rise from our chairs and shuffle across the sand to capture the Kodak moment, mesmerized by the panorama. The sunset has long been a ritual in Key West and, by extension, on the private island 500 yards off its coast—though the two experiences couldn’t be more different. In Key West, the onset of dusk is the start of the party, complete with outlandish performances, tchotchkes and boisterous revelers. On Sunset Key, the view is just as good, but there are no cats jumping through rings of fire—just picture-perfect clapboard cottages, beaches where seagulls outnumber people and dinner tables perched on the sand. As the curtain falls on nature’s nightly show, the island turns magical. Tiki torches encircle the beachfront tables at Latitudes, casting a warm glow onto the idyllic scene. With the soft sigh of the surf as the soundtrack, it’s even easier to appreciate

Chef Todd Holender’s haute island cuisine, which is heavy on local seafood and tropical fruit—a sensuous reminder that we are dining in an archipelago of ancient coral cays. By day, Sunset Key is equally charming. The cottages on this 27-acre island are the essence of barefoot chic. Designed in the Key West tradition with broad overhangs, metal roofs and lap siding, they are perfect for the indoor-outdoor lifestyle so typical of the tropics. Our cottage has a private plunge pool with a gorgeous view of the bay and all the islets scattered within it. We don’t usually hang out in hotels when we travel, but this four-bedroom, 2,500-square-foot paradise is so perfectly appointed, we find ourselves quite at home within its white-picket-fenced confines. We literally have to remind ourselves there is an outside world with activities to be sampled. So we drag ourselves to Key West, mostly because the kids want to feed the sharks, and

062_WEEKENDER_0114.indd 63

board an Extreme Adventures catamaran. We immediately realize this was an excellent decision. Captain Ken steers the boat to the sharks’ lair, and we watch them circle round. They look menacing but they’re misunderstood, he assures us as his first mate puts a fish head on a line and lets them have at it. A healthy person could jump in, he says, and the sharks would treat him as one of the pack. We take his word for that one. Later he spots a school of dolphins and goes in for a closer look. The baby among them breaks away and comes to the boat, right to where the children are. It does a few tricks to the delight of its eager audience and takes off again. We could watch these intelligent, playful creatures frolic for hours. After a day on the water, we return to the secluded bliss of Sunset Key and head to the pool bar for a cheeseburger. It shouldn’t come as a surprise: It really does taste better in paradise. (westinsunsetkeycottages.com) « palmbeachillustrated.com | FEBRUARY 2014

a snaking piece of mountain blacktop, the 10-inchwide rubber out back is never going to relinquish its immense grip. That is, unless you hit “Track” mode—one of five adaptive driving modes—which eases control of the back end and allows you to channel your inner hooligan. Providing the motivation for this new Kentucky flier is the latest iteration of Chevy’s inimitable small block V-8. Direct-inject and continuously variable valve timing mixes with old-tech pushrods to crank out 460 horses and 465 pound-feet of muscly torque. You don’t buy a ’Vette for low fuel economy, but Al Gore would approve of the V-8’s ability to shut down four of its cylinders on light throttle openings to return an econobox-like 29 to the gallon on the highway. A four-cylinder Corvette— now that’s a first. Choose between a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters or an all-new seven-speed stick with so-called “Active Rev Matching” that blips the throttle on downshifts. Either way, you’ll have a blast. The true icing on the cake is the interior. After six generations of Playskool-plastic awfulness, this is a welcome change. The cabin is awash in buttersmooth leather with contrast stitching, leather on the dash and soft, nicely textured plastics. The new seats are a body-hugging revelation. Here is, without doubt, the performance bargain of the decade. A base yet still superbly equipped 1LT Stingray coupe will set you back just $51,000, or $56,000 as a convertible. Even loaded with every bell, toy and whistle, you’ll struggle to spend $70-grand. As for that testosterone issue, if you experience problems lasting longer than four hours, you can always turn off the motor. «

Matthew and Nicole Hanley Mellon are partners in love, life and a very fashionable business By Paige Bowers | Photography by Navid

Sometimes a marriage of tastes and temperaments begins at someone else’s wedding. Just ask Matthew and Nicole Hanley Mellon, who met almost eight years ago at a friend’s nuptials. They were seeing other people at the time, but each showed up to the event alone. “I used to be rational about relationships,” Nicole says of that first meeting. “But after I met Matthew, I left this wedding and thought, ‘I just met the guy I’m going to marry.’” Matthew felt the same way about Nicole, but their mutual spark didn’t lead to immediate wedding bells. So Matthew, a descendant of the famed Mellon banking family, and Nicole, the daughter of an investment firm head, struck up a two-year-long friendship that led to their engagement in Hong Kong in 2008. Now married, the couple and their two toddlers divide their time between New York City and Palm Beach. Theirs is a rich—but not necessarily expensive—life they detail on hanley mellon.com, which offers curated fashion and lifestyle ideas that are sophisticated but unfussy, just like they are. This fall, they’ll launch their first Hanley Mellon line of clothing, which will include 10 pieces that can be styled 50 different ways.

Matthew and Nicole share fashion and lifestyle tips—along with personal snippets from their life—on hanleymellon.com.

“Matthew and Nicole have such a deep, mad love for each other. They see things beyond what the rest of us can see, and so their collaboration is such a natural progression.”

Like all other aspects of their life, the Mellons’ clothing line is a perfect collaboration of their individual strengths: Nicole’s style sense and Matthew’s business expertise.

the idea of a big wedding, but we never took the time to plan it.” Enter Easter vacation, 2010. “We were staying at Harbour Island in the Bahamas, and I remember we went to dinner and it was so beautiful, and I asked the maître d’ how hard it would be to arrange a wedding on the beach,” Nicole recalls. “The maître d’ said people did it all the time, so the next day we went and did the paperwork and then hopped in the golf cart and looked for a priest. All of our families had Easter plans, so we did the ceremony at Diane von Fürstenberg’s house. Matthew’s daughter, Araminta, was there with her mother, so she was a part of the ceremony. Alex von Fürstenberg was there and a bunch of other people from Miami came over. It was all off-thecuff, but at the end of the day, it was just what I wanted.” The couple moved into an art-laden apartment in The Pierre Hotel in New York just as they became parents. Nicole was working as a stylist for Ralph Lauren and eventually branched out to launch her own clothing line, Hanley. The couple’s whirlwind courtship and engagement led to a whirlwind marriage. “We were going to elope, and then Matthew wanted to ask my dad and we got traditional about it,” Nicole says. “We toyed with

Nicole Hanley Mellon has long been connected to Palm Beach, where her parents now reside. She and Matthew live in New York.

Hanley, came first, followed by a daughter, Olympia Drexel. Now, the couple begins their days early, usually depending on what time the children get up. “Sometimes it’s 5:45 a.m., but this morning it was 7:30 a.m.,” Nicole says. “So we’ll spend time with them before our days start. Then I’ll spend an hour journaling and, when I’m feeling disciplined, exercising. I do try to carve out time for myself to reflect and get my head together.” Matthew, meanwhile, will start his day with yoga or some other exercise before reading The Wall Street Journal. Once the children are at school, the couple’s day consists of back-to-back meetings. Nicole often works in the Garment District, while Matthew meets with various congressmen or regulators about his ventures in the Bitcoin space. “I’m a typical entrepreneur in the sense that I never turn down a meeting and I feel like I never leave a meeting without learning something,” Matthew says. “I like connecting people, creating visions and pushing deals forward.” Near the end of the day, Nicole picks up the children and works from home for a while before tucking the kids in at night. When Matthew and Nicole aren’t watching Homeland or, as Nicole says, “taking a breath from a very long day,” they’re making the rounds at opera, ballet or theater performances, taking in art exhibits or getting involved in various causes throughout Manhattan, usually in the museum or education sphere. This fashionable couple’s collaboration has been years in the making. They had originally planned to launch their own clothing line around the time the recession hit, but they shelved the idea until the economy improved. In the meantime, Nicole 74

started experimenting with a website featuring looks she had styled. “My voice started to grow over time and so did my confidence in my choices,” she says of hanleymellon. com. “Then Matt started weighing in and including some of his photography, so it became sort of about our life, too. It has been an incredible journey, just even from a self-growth perspective, and it has helped me solidify my thoughts on certain things, whether it’s an article of clothing or a life choice.” As readers began paying more attention to the couple’s writings, Nicole says she and Matthew decided to turn hanleymellon.com into a more formal site, which they redesigned and launched in late 2013. Now, readers are treated to a gallery of Nicole’s styled outfits as well as her musings on how to take toddlers to a museum, where to find the best coffee and the art of hanging pictures in a room. “I’m proud to have put together a site that was beautiful and that relayed the sort of experience that I would like to have on the Internet,” Nicole says. “And once we sent out the first email blast that said, ‘Here we are,’ it sort of took on a life of its own.” At a time when celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow are curating lifestyle content and offering related ecommerce on sites such as Goop, the Mellons say they are cutting through the Internet’s noise to offer another style sensibility, one that includes the rare voice of a male from time to time. When their clothing line launches, the Mellons hope this sensibility will speak to consumers, especially girls-on-the-go who need to be ready for any event. “Nicole is incredibly talented,” Matthew says. “She has a gift and has taken the time to grow this organically and to really connect to the customer through the site.” It’s a collaboration born out of a connection of likeminded souls. “I feel so blessed,” Nicole says. “My parents have this incredible marriage, and I remember telling my mom once that I feared marriage because I thought I’d never meet my soul mate. My mom told me that I may not, and that what she and my father have is rare. Now, I know I’ve met my soul mate and I’m just so grateful for every day.” « 76

Life can change in an instant; it can change in fundamental ways that only become clear in retrospect. Take, for instance, an afternoon in New York in 1964. Jane Holzer was crossing 59th Street, right in front of Bloomingdale’s, when she encountered an artist named Andy Warhol. They had never met before, but after a mutual friend made the introductions, the young man from Pittsburgh forged ahead. “You wanna be in the movies?” Warhol asked. “Well, it beats being a boring Park Avenue housewife who shops all day,” Holzer replied. As meetings go, it wasn’t quite up there with Picasso and Dora Maar, but it was close. At the time, Holzer was a Palm Beach kid and young wife who had created a stir when Diana Vreeland assigned David Bailey to photograph her for British Vogue. Soon after working with Warhol, she was known as Baby Jane Holzer and became as much an icon of fashionable New York as Jean Shrimpton was in London. Just short of 50 years later, Holzer still has the luxurious mane of hair that was her signature feature when she was Warhol’s first superstar, was profiled by Tom Wolfe and appeared with Edie Sedgwick in Ciao Manhattan. “To Jane, Love Andy: Warhol’s First Superstar,” an exhibit devoted to Holzer and Warhol, opens February 2 at the Norton Museum of Art. There are the expected photographs of Holzer by Bailey as well as by Bert Stern, Jerry Schatzberg, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. But there is also couture worn by Holzer, the movies she made with Warhol and a selection of

Warhol paintings from premium private collections. “Theirs was a rich and fortuitous connection,” says Cheryl Brutvan, the Norton’s curator of contemporary art. “Right through 1966, Warhol was also earning greater recognition. They were having parallel careers; her success fed his success and vice versa.” In the beginning, Holzer couldn’t comprehend how famous Warhol would become. “His studio, which he nicknamed The Factory, was covered in silver foil—even hanging from the pipes,” she says. “When I walked in for the first time, Andy was painting flowers on the floor. I liked his work immediately, although I couldn’t have told you why, exactly. I do know that I thought it was pretty. What’s not pretty about Four Flowers?” Holzer remembers Warhol as usually at The Factory, “thinking or figuring things out.” The work segued into the parties. One of Holzer’s favorite memories of the latter involved a rather heavy nude woman clothing herself in plastic wrap. It may have been performance art, or simple exhibitionism. Either way, very proper maids moved around her serving tea sandwiches, and Holzer thought it was hilarious. Holzer became one of the coterie of Warhol celebrities who gathered at The Factory, were relentlessly publicized in Interview magazine and gradually became underground superstars—Bizarro-world versions of Liz and Lana, giving heightened, campy versions of Hollywood performances in parodic melodramas often directed by somebody besides Warhol, who increasingly functioned as an impresario.

I’ve always bought art through a totally emotional process. Is that smart? Probably not. But the thing is to have art that you love. I buy what I love.”

Holzer was comfortable working before still cameras, although she always felt photographers “put you in god-awful, uncomfortable positions.” Movies were a different matter. “Sometimes my gut would be twisted,” she says. “Andy had all kinds of ideas; some I agreed with, some I didn’t. He’d say things like, ‘We’re going to Larry Rivers’ house. You’re going to make out with Larry. Then you’re going to make out with his wife. Then you’re going to make out with his entire family.’ “Andy was a very kind person, but he was a voyeur. Some of the people around him gave me the creeps. But there wasn’t a bad body count. Edie died, but you could see that coming.” Holzer tells a story about shooting a scene in a halfway house. Everybody else showed up at 11 a.m., but Sedgwick dragged herself in at about 5 in the afternoon, stoned and feeling great, oblivious to everyone else’s anger. Worse: She photographed like a dream. Holzer still owns the Palm Beach house her parents built in 1952, a cool, modest home with wormy chestnut ceilings, terrazzo floors and coffee table books piled high on a library table. When it’s orchid season, the house is bathed in hundreds of them—in trees, in ground containers—everywhere. 80 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Holzer’s father, Cal Brookenfeld, was a real estate investor who came to Palm Beach in the 1930s and helped found the Palm Beach Golf Club. Holzer was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in 1940 and raised on the island until it was time to run toward New York, toward authenticity. The foundation of her fortune are four buildings on Worth Avenue originally purchased by her father. She still owns them, hovering over them like a proud mother. Warhol did more for Holzer than make her an underground star; he gave her an interest in the art world. “I couldn’t afford to buy a Renoir or a Manet, but I immediately loved Andy’s work,” she says. “I’ve always bought art through a totally emotional process. Is that smart? Probably not. But the thing is to have art that you love. I buy what I love.” Warhol would send her to Leo Castelli’s gallery, where prices for his artwork began around $200. “And Leo would let you pay in installments,” Holzer says. “After I bought Andy, I bought a Franz Kline.” What would Warhol think about the tens of millions of dollars his work brings today? “Are you kidding? He’d be thrilled about the prices and so proud,” she says. As has usually been the case, Holzer’s luck carried over into her new enthusiasm. “I wasn’t trained in art; I didn’t go to art school. I

078-JANE-0214.indd 81

wasn’t raised in an artistic environment; when my mother wanted some paintings, she’d have a Palm Beach gallery send over an assortment, and she would choose something that went with the walls,” Holzer says. “But that’s not buying art; that’s decorating. I can assure you that all of those paintings are now in the basement. There’s no passion in that. “Looking back, I could have bought fakes, but I always made a point of buying only living artists and from dealers I knew. Those were my rules.” Even after Holzer drifted out of Warhol’s creative orbit, the working-class kid from Pittsburgh and the heiress from Palm Beach remained close friends. In a way, they still are—like the man said, death ends a life, not a relationship. “He was at every birthday party of my son’s. He flew down here when I opened Sweet Baby Jane’s,” an ice cream parlor Holzer owned, she says. “He loved Palm Beach, especially the area around Oleander [Avenue]. “What people don’t understand about Andy is how grounded he was. He never spent more than he had; financially, he was very conservative. He worked in soup kitchens. He established tabs at Max’s Kansas City for food for young artists, but he wouldn’t give them cash because he was afraid they’d use [it to buy] drugs. He was responsible.”

It was a mutually productive relationship. Holzer gave Warhol entrée and class, and he gave her a sense of daring mixed with a groundbreaking aesthetic that was pure New York. “Palm Beach is like Switzerland. It’s the safest place imaginable,” Holzer says. “If your alarm goes off, the police are here in minutes. In New York, they don’t even bother to respond. Where else but in Palm Beach do they cover the flowers when there’s a danger of frost?” Today, Holzer’s Palm Beach house is an extension of her life in New York; her son and two grandchildren are often in residence, a function of the family’s closeness. After the birth of her child, she had a decision to make, and chose family over modeling and acting. She remains passionate about Warhol and about art. “My stock market is real estate and art. I develop it, I marry it, I keep it close,” she says. “My worst deal? Easy—buying on the Lower East Side when I could have bought another place on Worth Avenue.” And has she ever considered what her life would have been like if she had crossed at 58th Street instead of 59th? “I can’t even begin to think about how different it would be,” she says. “That was my lucky moment—a life-changing moment.” « palmbeachillustrated.com | february 2014

FOR THE LOVE OF

Classics

Why invest in art that merely hangs on a wall when you can own a drivable masterpiece? Now is the time to invest in, and enjoy, a classic automobile.

M

odern cars are just that: modern. Climb in, turn on, drive away. With a few exotic exceptions, the experience tends to be as exhilarating as piloting a washing machine. No wonder we text too much behind the wheel. But owning a classic—now that’s different. Daydream for a second about the hedonistic, grin-inducing joy of cruising on South Ocean Boulevard in a lipstick-red ’65 Mustang convertible with the sun on your face, wind in your hair and Windex-blue Atlantic at your side. If you have the urge to own a classic, you’re not alone. Demand for collector cars, especially those lovingly restored in top condition, has never been higher. And neither have the prices.

92

The collector car world is still abuzz at the news that a classic Ferrari 250 GTO race car, one of just 36 built between 1962 and 1964, changed hands in October for a staggering $52 million. Before that, at the August RM classic car auction in Monterey, California, one collector bid $27.5 million for a rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider. Even the humble, pint-sized 1958 Fiat 600 Jolly ragtop at RM’s Amelia Island auction in the spring sold for an unbelievable $110,000. Whether you’re looking for a classic as a solid-return investment or simply want a hot car to cruise around in during the weekend, you won’t be disappointed with one of these models.

Pony Ride 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible What’s not to love about the early Mustang convertible? Still affordable and easy to maintain, with pretty much every part still available (including entire body shells), it’s the perfect beach cruiser. Prices run anywhere between $25,000 and $75,000. A lovely pale yellow ’65 sold at Auction America’s Fort Lauderdale sale last March for just $26,500.

Star Quality 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet The 1960s four-seat Mercedes-Benz convertibles have long been a favorite of Palm Beachers, providing perfect roomy transportation for friends and family to The Breakers for lunch. A hugely appealing model is the 220SE, with its economical six-cylinder power. Around $60,000 buys a nicely restored model, while this 220SE sold recently at auction for $82,500.

Luxe Deluxe 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud Is there a more elegant way to cruise through Palm Beach to your yacht than behind the wheel of an early-’60s RollsRoyce Silver Cloud sedan? Stately, refined, classy and ohso-British, the Cloud is the Rolls-Royce in which they say the only thing you can hear while driving is the ticking of the clock. Around $50,000 or so will buy a well-maintained model. As for the joy of owning it—priceless.

94

Rolls-Royce

No car epitomized the shagadelic ’60s in England more than the E-Type. Although it was undervalued for so long, prices are now rising quickly, reflecting the car’s immense appeal. Gorgeous to look at and a delight to drive, the E should continue to appreciate in value. While this golden beauty sold at auction in July for $104,500, a roadster in good condition can be had for around $80,000.

Rock ‘n’ Roll 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible Is there a more perfect Florida cruiser? Fifties Caddies were the undisputed kings of American luxury cars, with their acres of chrome, huge V-8 power and Barcalounger-style seating for five. Yes, they’re big and bulky to drive but hugely fun to just glide in around town. Prices start around $60,000.

Beach Baby To witness just how super-heated the collector car market is now, cast your eyes on this delicious 1958 Fiat Jolly. Last year, this surrey-topped, wicker-seated, no-door beach cruiser sold at RM’s Amelia Island auction for a staggering $110,000. Back in the ’50s, Fiat’s yacht-loving chairman, Gianni Agnelli, asked his designers to build him a tender for his vessel. So many of his friends wanted one, the Jolly was built in limited numbers. Before being sold to its new owner, this car spent most of its life in Florida. 96

The GOld Standard 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider At the RM auction in August in Monterey, California, this stunning 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sold for $27.5 million, making it the most expensive road car ever sold at auction in the United States. It’s one of only 10 North American Racing Team Spider dropheads built between 1967 and 1968, powered by a 300-horsepower, four-cam V-12. And the good news? All the proceeds went to charity.

The Racer 2005 Ford GT

The world was shocked and awed when Ford recently decided to celebrate its 1960s victories at Le Mans with its GT40s by building a modern-day version of the racing machines. Between 2004 and 2006, Ford hand-built 4,038 hip-high GTs powered by a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8. It was Detroit’s first true supercar. Originally priced at around $150,000, prices have soared to over $200,000 and they’ll only continue skyward. This 2005 model sold at auction in April for $231,000 and was worth every cent.

Ferrari. Just the mere mention of the name will give any car lover goose bumps. But prices have long been going through the roof, leaving less appealing models like the Mondial and boxy 308 GT4 Dino to be snapped up by misguided bargain hunters. The most sensible Ferrari to collect these days is the easy-to-maintain 360—the Spider, rather than the coupe. Around $80,000 will buy a good convertible. MODERN Makeover Georgia couple D’Lana and Mike Nixon update their Palm City home to better fit their social lifestyle

By Linda Marx Photography by daniel newcomb

D’Lana and Mike Nixon hired their longtime Atlanta designer, Stephen Pararo, to open and modernize their Palm City home. The foyer leads to a 2,000-square-foot living space with beautiful water views and an open rhythm. The art introduces colors Pararo used throughout the house. palmbeachillustrated.com | February 2014 101

Pararo expanded the master bedroom (above) by onethird and added a tall upholstered headboard. Mike wanted the adjoining bathroom (below) "to look like the European spas he has visited,” Pararo says.

The Nixons (above) enjoy casual entertaining, which is easier now that the kitchen is connected to the living and dining areas (top). Mike’s office (opposite page) is masculine but bright.

or years, D’Lana and Mike Nixon’s seasonal life in South Florida had been confined mostly to Boca Raton. The Georgia couple has been escaping to South Florida since the 1990s. From late spring through the December holidays, they reside in Hawks Ridge, the exclusive golf club they own in Ball Ground, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. They had been spending the remainder of the year in Boca Raton until a friend suggested they venture a little farther north. “Golfer Chi-Chi Rodriguez loved Palm City and encouraged us to look at it,” D’Lana says. D’Lana and Mike took his advice and began to explore Palm City and socialize with residents. Drawn to the area’s pristine beauty, down-to-earth attitude and low-key lifestyle, they decided to purchase a two-story, 6,500-square-foot home in

the late ’90s. “We weren’t as happy in Boca Raton because we prefer a more casual and quiet life,” D’Lana says. “So we made a change.” In Palm City, Mike balances work with play. The Nixons own TCI Contracting, an Atlanta-based company that sells and installs building products, including insulation and gutters for residential and commercial application. An arts supporter, Mike also has served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Encore Park for the Arts in Alpharetta, Georgia, and was instrumental in brokering a deal with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to build a stateof-the-art amphitheater for the performing arts, which opened in 2008. He spends the day working in his book-lined home office, then plays golf with friends at the Floridian, the newly renovated waterfront golf club and spa.

The Nixons’ dining table can seat 12, with additional seating at the black granite bar. In the kitchen, Pararo created more cabinet space, warming drawers and a carbon fiber faucet and made clever use of granite and wood. “My goal was to keep the kitchen clean” by hiding the appliances, he says.

D’Lana also hits the links and likes to take advantage of downtown Stuart’s restaurants and shopping scene, only a short drive from their home. “I don’t need to be around a lot of large shopping malls because we have them in Atlanta,” she says. “I prefer the unusual small stores in Stuart.” Together, the Nixons enjoy riding bikes and dining alfresco. Most of all, they do a great deal of entertaining in Palm City, hosting parties of all sizes—a passion that two years ago prompted a large undertaking: a comprehensive renovation. 104 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

100-NIXON-0214.indd 104

12/31/13 10:26 AM

For the project, the couple enlisted the help of their longtime Atlanta designer, Stephen Pararo, owner of Pineapple House Interior Design. Completed by Thanksgiving of 2012, the finished home now has a great room, five bedrooms (two upstairs), seven baths, his and her offices and an improved outdoor oasis, including a beautiful pool, a built-in whirlpool, a summer kitchen and a showpiece fire pit overlooking the St. Lucie River. “I wanted to modernize Mike and D’Lana’s Palm City home without pushing too far,” Pararo says. “I helped them when they first bought the house 15 years ago. But this time we removed the inside kitchen walls and combined the interior public areas into one large space ideal for entertaining.” Because the Nixons entertain frequently, Pararo knew combining the living room, dining room and kitchen into one grand 2,000-square-foot space would be a perfect fit for their lifestyle. Mike and D’Lana loved the idea. “The house was dated and needed to be opened up,” D’Lana says. “We wanted a bigger and better space to host our parties and to have overnight company.” Pararo transformed the sunken dining room into a stylish office for D’Lana. In the same area, he re

100-NIXON-0214.indd 105

moved the vaults and flattened out the ceiling, virtually stripping away the whimsy and modernizing the lines. By incorporating strong, linear architectural updates, he organized spaces and created focal points. Pararo chose a glass railing to separate the hallway from the living room and recreated the entranceway to look more commanding by installing 10-foot-tall doors. And he replaced the floor tile with wide, lightly distressed oak planks. Pararo removed the walls so the new, sculptural kitchen would be one with the great room. Similar materials—marble, mahogany and sandblasted granite—lend a cohesive look to the space. More counter surfaces and a double island further enhance the couple’s entertaining lifestyle. “We are casual people and like to have friends over to grill burgers or to have pasta,” D’Lana says. “Now we can all talk while we cook and not feel like we are cramped into one room.” The Nixons recently hosted their first big party since the home makeover. Seventy guests flowed through the house and patio area. As the evening closed on a romantic note around the fire pit and under the stars, the Nixons felt a sense of comfort and happiness—true second-home bliss. «

Pararo expanded the pool deck and upgraded the patio area with modern outdoor furniture, enhancing the views of the St. Lucie River and the couple’s outdoor lifestyle.

Crave it In The Breakers’ collection of worldclass restaurants, Echo is described as serving “resounding Asian cuisine.” The metaphor is apt, because some of the taste sensations resonate in the mind for years. On those occasions when we yearn for the best in the Chinese repertoire, we crave the restaurant’s Cantonese black cod. The dish takes its name from the layer of black beans on top. The cod is steamed with Chinese wine and augmented with ginger, scallions and toasted garlic. The remarkably moist and mild fish is enhanced by the coating of spiced beans and served on a bed of bok choy. The result is a triumph of yin and yang, a unique combination of delicacy and earthiness. Combine it with a wine from the intriguing list compiled by Master Sommelier Virginia Philip, and you’ll be satisfied—until your next visit. {GOURMET INGREDIENT}

Italian Nectar

Those fortunate enough to have traveled in Emilia-Romagna have been exposed to the joys of the Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale of Modena. Don’t confuse this with the stuff poured on salads—those tend to be nothing more than wine vinegars with caramel coloring and flavoring. The making of Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale is a time-consuming process; Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes are first reduced and then aged in wood for a minimum of 12 years. The result is a thick, pungent and flavorful syrup that is a delight with food. Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale is classified according to a leaf system. One leaf is suitable for salads and has a pronounced vinegar flavor. Twoleaf varieties are sweeter and best for marinades and grilled meats. A three-leaf Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale goes well with roasted fish and meats and can be used to enhance sauces. The rare four-leaf variety usually turns up in desserts or drizzled over Parmigiano-Reggiano. A good introduction to the elixir is the three-leaf from Acetum, which retails for $20-25. Sweet and unctuous, it will enhance just about any savory dish you prepare in the kitchen. The most unusual food pairing? Pour some over vanilla ice cream to conclude a meal. (acetum.it) —M.S.

Italian Stallion Get acquainted with Italy’s powerhouse red, Brunello di Montalcino By Mark SPivak

A vineyard near Montalcino, in Italy’s Tuscany region, where Brunello is created Top right: the ancient cellar at Tenute Silvio Nardi

One of the “three Bs” (along with Barolo and Barbaresco), Brunello di Montalcino stands at the pinnacle of the Italian red wine hierarchy. It is powerful, concentrated and capable of long-term aging, yet supple and elegant at the same time. Brunello is made from grapes grown in a cluster of vineyards near the town of Montalcino, south of Florence. Like its cousin, Chianti, it is a recently invented wine. Brunello was created in the middle of the nineteenth century by the Biondi-Santi family, which was the only recorded producer in the region until after World War II. Unlike Chianti, Brunello is a single varietal wine rather than a blend, made from a clone of Sangiovese called Sangiovese Grosso. Aroma and Flavor: Brunello typically offers an array of enticing scents on the nose: vanilla, leather, violets, chocolate and a profusion of berry aromas. On the palate, the wine is harmonious and well balanced, with good acidity and flavors of blackberry, black raspberry and black cherry. Hierarchy: The Brunello pecking order is simple. Most estates produce a normale bottling (usually released 50 months after harvest) and a riserva (available to the public one year later). Currently, the minimum aging requirements stipulate at least two years in oak and four months in bottle before release, although top estates customarily age the wine much longer. Expect to pay $60 and up for a normale and at least $150 for a good riserva. Why so pricey? The laws of supply and demand are the culprits. Land is scarce in the region, and total production in a good vintage seldom exceeds 25,000 cases. Demand is global, and U.S. consumers are competing with collectors across Europe and Asia. Even though as much as one-third of the Brunello produced comes to America, the majority of that wine is sold to restaurants rather than retail stores. Brunellogate: In 2008, the region was reeling with a fraud scandal. Italian authorities began investigating allegations that some producers violated purity regulations by secretly adulterating their wine with grapes from outside the region and using unauthorized varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2010, 17 people were indicted, including representatives from Castelgiocondo and Banfi, as well as the president and director of the Brunello Consortium. All but six of these worked out plea bargains. In the end, no fraud was proven, but more than 1 million liters (about 264,000 gallons) of Brunello were declassified.

Pour Clockwise from top: Castello Banfi; Manachiara Tenuto Silvio, Nardi and Castello Banfi Brunello; Brunello pairs well with veal.

Provocative Producer: The fig leaf goes to Natalie Oliveros, a.k.a. porn star Savanna Samson, winner of several AVN Awards (the adult film industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards). After leaving the world of pornographic films, she came out with a line of wines in collaboration with Brunello winemaker Roberto Cipresso. Oliveros is a partner with Cipresso in Fattoria La Fiorita, and many of their wines have won widespread critical acclaim. Top Producers: Some makers to look for include Biondi Santi, Il Poggione, Poggio Antico, Uccelliera, Altesino, Argiano, Lisini, Nardi, Caparzo, Casanova di Neri, Mastrojanni, Le Chiuse and Sesta di Sopra. HEAVENLY PAIRINGS: Match up a Brunello with grilled steak, lamb, duck, wild boar or other wild game; veal or other meats with wild mushrooms; earthy stews; and strong cheeses. The Next Best Thing: Many Brunello estates make a declassified wine called Rosso di Montalcino. Rosso is also made from 100 percent Sangiovese, but the aging requirements are shorter—at least six months in oak and a total of one year before release. Expect to pay $25-$30 for a good Rosso, which will provide an introduction to the category. Another option is Sant’Antimo, produced from vineyards just outside the Brunello region from foreign grape varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Noir. «

Nievera Williams Design envisioned and executed the garden and pool for this landmarked Palm Beach home, designed by Marion Sims Wyeth, paying special attention to the home’s Mediterraneanrevival architecture. Notably, the pool is located at the front entrance. “[We wanted] to design a pool and gardens that would be totally unexpected as you enter through the garden gate, says Keith Williams, partner and vice president of Nievera Williams Design. A variety of spaces create the feeling of individual rooms and are perfect for entertaining or relaxing poolside. Small bubbling fountains are nestled amid tall palms and lush low gardens, emitting soothing sounds. All of these elements work together to maintain a sense of arrival and a feeling of tranquility. Earn your Stripes A stylish dose of stripes is the perfect cure for decorating malaise By Liza Grant Smith

Striped Summer Escape Palm Beach/New York designer Celerie Kemble orchestrated striped success in this East Hampton bedroom. “The walls—cloaked in a soft, hand-painted acanthus stripe on grasscloth wallpaper from my collection with F. Schumacher—were juxstaposed by an iron poster bed from Henredon, gauzy white sheers and a tiny charcoal ticking stripe that appeared as an almost heathered colorfield at that scale,” she says. For Kyle and Rachel Pintarelli, the husband-and-wife team behind Rockstar Catering Company and Event Planners in Tequesta, every event is a labor of love. Kyle, the executive chef, oversees all of the fare while Rachel takes charge of the decor and planning. We asked the duo for food and design tips for setting the right mood for an intimate meal. (561-401-9409, rockstarcateringcompany.com) How would you craft the setting for a romantic dinner? Rachel: Create a private space. Turn your dining room table into a setting for two by removing the leaf extender and all extra chairs for a super-cozy feel. To take things to the next level, move away from the dining room table and find a unique setting—arrange a picnic-style meal in a room with a fireplace or opt for alfresco dining on the patio if the weather is right. [Also] lighting is key. If you have the option, dim the overhead lighting and add candlelight. Any entrée suggestions? Kyle: If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, try pan searing a great piece of fish. Top it off with a fresh salsa of heirloom tomatoes, red onions, capers and a little balsamic vinegar. What about dessert? Family Matters

The Thomson family sees three generations enter the luxury real estate field. by Nila Do

Rob Thomson

Lorea Thomson

Brittany Boyer

Rachel Thomson

When Joan Thomson started her real estate career more than 40 years ago, she couldn’t have predicted that generations of Thomsons would soon flood into the same industry. As the matriarch of Waterfront Properties, the area’s leading luxury real estate firm, Joan had no idea her own family members–two of her sons, four grandchildren and spouses–would soon be very special members of another family: a real estate family. The Waterfront Properties group includes nearly 100 members, each of whom have a keen sense of understanding that their own family now has expanded to include fellow Realtors, buyer specialists, brokers and more. And that’s exactly the culture that Joan implemented from day one. “I remember in those days I always carried a bag of quarters and had to use payphones,” Joan laughs, referring to the pre-cellphone days. The frequent payphone scavenges worked out for Joan, who developed a strong reputation on Jupiter Island and beyond. Though the business initially was founded on the idea of working with waterfront properties on the ocean, Intracoastal and riverfront, Joan quickly incorporated high-end gated communities to her repertoire. And thus, Waterfront Properties and Club Communities was born. “I developed my own approach to things,” Joan begins. “I didn’t want to show property when a buyer called about property in such-and-such place that I didn’t know anything about. So my idea was to specialize and focus.” And so began the birth of an idea that has propelled Waterfront Properties as one of the world’s top real estate companies in the luxury market. The idea of agents specializing in specific areas has been a cornerstone approach to Waterfront Properties, one that has seen the company achieve vast accolades from the invitation-only organization, Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate. These days, Joan’s progressive, out-of-the-box idea to specialize has been furthered by her son Rob’s global marketing approach. With Internet

marketing that reaches every corner of the world, Waterfront Properties has made its clients and their properties forefront in the global market. The idea of working in real estate came to Rob Thomson almost unexpectedly. The youngest of Joan’s sons, Rob remembers being in the passenger seat of his mother’s car when she would have to pull over to make a phone call or show a home. “As a kid, I used to think this was the world’s worst job,” Rob admits. “My mom was constantly on the go, always stopping at a payphone and meeting with a client.” But eventually Rob had a change of heart. He saw how fulfilling finding a home for a family could be, and how selling a property at the right price could make a client feel. “I realized how lucky I was to be able to go to the ‘Joan Thomson School of Real Estate,’” Rob says. “I was able to go at this in baby steps because she was always there to guide me and to walk me through it and teach me all the different stuff she knew.” As the managing partner of Waterfront Properties, Rob carries his mother’s nurturing nature to the rest of the team, providing daily lunches to the team from Shipwreck Bar and Grille, as well as fresh fruit snacks. “We were watching the staff work so hard and saw them often working without lunches. We thought that was crazy,” Rob says. “So we wanted to be able to provide them with healthy meals so they wouldn’t have to worry about lunch, and as a show of thanks for their hard work.” The agents in the Jupiter corporate office, which houses most of the company staff and a large number of agents, some of whom are in training and will work in one of the other offices, benefit by the daily lunches also. Rob’s next oldest brother, Paul, also is a Realtor at Waterfront Properties, specializing in Palm Beach Gardens, Juno Beach, the Bear’s Club and Frenchman’s Creek. And for Paul, he credits his mother’s approach to the real estate business as the key factor in such a familyoriented company.

“At the typical real estate company, everybody keeps their cards close to their chests,” Thomson explains. “You really want to hide things from any other agent in the company for fear they are trying to knuckle in on your business. But here at Waterfront Properties, Joan started this culture of territories, where there is no competition within your own company. Everybody wants to help everybody else here.”

Rob’s daughter Sarah never thought she would go into the family business, much less encourage her fiancé, Carlos Diaz, to go into it, too. “I think everyone has a rebellious side to them where they say that they’re never going to work with family,” Sarah jokes. “But I couldn’t be any happier now that I’m on board.”

For Lorea Thomson, Rob’s wife, being a part of the Waterfront Properties family and having her children involved in it has achieved a greater goal for her.

Her father told her that if she wanted to try the real estate business, she could start with administrative tasks. Slowly those tasks evolved into sitting with a team on open houses, assisting that team, and eventually earning her real estate license. Four years later, Sarah hardly remembers those “rebellious” days of not wanting to work in the family business.

“I think it’s really rewarding because I feel like it builds a legacy for our kids,” says Lorea, who writes content and blogs on the company’s website. “To see something come from something that started so small and become something that has been so wonderful is really exciting for our family.”

Part of that is owed to the welcoming environment created at Waterfront Properties. As Sarah puts it, it really is a family here, and not just one filled with Thomsons.

Lorea says she and Rob want to set good examples for their children and to show them how a company and the individuals in it can rally together to benefit an entire community. Through their non-profit organization, Charities for Children, the Thomson family and Waterfront Properties have donated toys, bikes and so much more to needy and cancer-stricken children in Palm Beach County.

The New Guard For the newest generation of Thomsons, being in the family business has been a unique learning experience for which they’ve been grateful. But it hasn’t always been that way. Ask Brittany Boyer. Despite being Rob Thomson’s daughter, Brittany is upfront in admitting she didn’t get the favoritism most would expect as the boss’ daughter. Instead, she started at the bottom, proving herself along the way.

“When I was a kid, some of Dad’s friends who I thought were age-old friends would always come over to the house,” Sarah says. “I would call them my ‘uncle’ and ‘aunt.’ But as I got older, I learned that they actually worked with my dad. I had no idea. But that’s just who my parents are. They like to incorporate their full lives with the people they work with, as if everyone is family.” And that’s exactly how Sarah’s fiancé, Carlos, felt when he started working at Waterfront Properties. After coming on board during the summer and earning his real estate license, Carlos has put his full energy into the business as a buyer’s agent. And the best part about it? He has an entire family who is encouraging him to succeed. “It puts a smile on my face knowing that,” Carlos says. “This is not only a work environment, but a personal and welcoming environment where everyone including Rob and Joan are so happy when you are doing well.”

“You have to work even harder because you’re a Thomson,” says Brittany, who is currently Waterfront Properties’ SEO content creator and social media coordinator. “My dad and grandma have done a great job of teaching all my siblings, uncles and cousins who work here that there is no special treatment.” Working from the ground level up undoubtedly has made Rachel Thomson, Brittany’s sister, appreciate the family business in a way few others could. From filing paperwork to cleaning the office, Rachel has done it all. And as she is applying for her real estate license, Rachel can look back on the countless hours she spent at the office, learning trade secrets and more, to use in her future career as a real estate agent. “I think doing all those little tasks really made us kids respect the company as a whole and everyone within it,” Rachel says. “I watched my dad at work, and it has helped me a lot and given me a chance to absorb what he knows.”

QUOTE/UNQUOTE The team shares its thoughts about Waterfront Properties “Working as a team has really cemented our family culture at Waterfront. The values of our family have really become the values at Waterfront.” – Rob Thomson “What makes this such a successful family business is that when you come to work, you’re here to work. There’s definitely a strong will to succeed here. Everybody rallies together, and they are here to support each other.” – Brittany Boyer

For Travis Thomson, Rob’s nephew, the chance to work with his uncle and grandmother has made a huge impact. In his own words, “it has made us even closer.” Travis worked literally side by side with his grandmother Joan for about a year, sharing the same office and learning the trade through her example. Today Travis is a top producer in Abacoa. “I consider it a huge benefit to learn from my grandmother,” Travis says. “Working with family has brought our relationship to a whole new level. Seeing them every day, I got to know Joan and Rob so well, and it has brought us closer.”

Marilynn Berke Interior design associates Q: What is your design inspiration? A: Inspiration always comes directly from our clients. The final design should match their needs and lifestyle perfectly so they will be truly happy within their personal space. Their happiness is always both goal and inspiration. It’s amazing, too. There’s nothing like the sense of comfort from seeing one’s interests and tastes reflected in an interior design.

Q: What is your area of specialization? A: Having worked on vastly different projects all around the nation, spanning various motifs and trends, I simply can’t imagine specializing in one particular area. If there is anything we specialize in, it’s personalization. To me, that’s the most wonderful thing about design. Every client is unique, and capturing that individuality in style and translating it into design is truly an amazing thing.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry? A: The industry has come to favor a transitional/ contemporary look that can be splendid, but it’s not necessarily for everyone. I always tell my clients to go with whatever they are comfortable with, regardless of trends. Many choose to adapt the clean, uncluttered modern sensibilities, but add light textured fabrics with accents of color. Personal is always the best way to go.

Each box includes a curated selection of full-size nourishing products that are “luxurious, comforting and indulgent,” Tara says. Selecting from a range of high-end beauty, health and home items, the MonthlyExpress team tests every product multiple times before sharing it with members. “We speak with highly reputable industry experts who travel the world to find out what may be hiding out there that we must have,” Tara says. Subscribers receive a beautiful box brimming with goodies around the fifteenth of each month—just in time for Valentine’s Day. Hint, hint. (800-400-2470, monthlyexpress.com)

Fitness Find

If you’re looking for the next big fitness craze—one that is not only trendy but also challenging— then look no further than Core Evolution. Located in Palm Beach Gardens, the studio opened in November and is the exclusive purveyor of the Lagree Method in Palm Beach County. This workout routine was founded by celebrity fitness trainer Sebastien Lagree and is most akin to Pilates with its focus on building strength, endurance and flexibility while also providing muscle, core and balance training. One key aspect separates Lagree from Pilates: the Megaformer. When you step inside Core Evolution’s 1,400-square-foot facility, you’re greeted by a sea of Megaformers—large, and slightly intimidating, machines. Don’t let the tough exterior fool you. The Megaformer is what makes this workout so effective: It helps you transition smoothly from one position to another and provides constant resistance through a system of springs and pulleys. Whether you’re stretching atop, lying on or standing next to the machine, you’re channeling your core stability while simultaneously working every muscle group. Your muscles may quiver, but that just means it’s working. Core Evolution offers 50-minute sessions in group and private settings. And really, 50 minutes is all you need on the Megaformer. In that time, you can burn between 500 and 700 calories as well as jumpstart your metabolism and improve your postural alignment. You might be sore the day after your first class, but persevere and you will reap the amazing benefits. (561-345-4446, coreevolutionpb.com)

real men Wear Pink Breast cancer is not just a woman’s cause. Just ask the Men in Pink, an allmale group committed to promoting the mission of Susan G. Komen South Florida. One local personality, Rocco Mangel of Rocco’s Tacos fame, has taken on the challenge full force. In November, Mangel presented Susan G. Komen’s South Florida and Central Florida chapters with $20,000 and $10,000, respectively—all proceeds from his “Tacos & Tatas” campaign, which donated a percentage of proceeds of funds from Taco Tuesday sales in October. In 2014, Rocco hopes to increase his efforts tenfold and get others involved with the Men in Pink. Rocco spoke with PBI about his involvement with the organization. (561-514-3020, komensouthflorida.org) How did you first become involved with the Men in Pink and Susan G. Komen South Florida? I get on the bar and I pour tequila [at Rocco’s Tacos]. My girlfriend’s mother is a breast cancer survivor, and I know a lot of people who are breast cancer survivors. I figured that October is breast cancer month, so why not raise money when I pour the tequila? Instead of pouring it for free, I’ll take donations. How would you like to see the group grow? I just think there needs to be more awareness for the Men in Pink. I don’t think that people really know what it’s all about. It needs someone to headline it. Hopefully, I can put my best foot forward this year and get some really good committee members to put together events and make the awareness happen. HOW CAN OTHERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAUSE? Time is money. This year, particularly, I saw a lot of outpouring when I did my breast cancer fundraiser—it really touches a lot of lives in so many different ways. Any way that somebody can give is good; it doesn’t necessarily have to be monetary.

Each brunch takes place at Anushka Salon and Spa and begins promptly at 11:30 a.m. Remaining dates for the season include February 8, March 22, April 26 and May 10.

For the last four decades, Anushka Blau of Anushka Salon and Spa in West Palm Beach has sought to rid women of that dimply demon, cellulite. Heralded as the “anti-cellulite maven” by W magazine and the “cellulite exorcist extraordinaire” by Vogue, Blau recently revitalized her signature program. The Better Body Boot Camp is a five-week, holistic approach to eliminating cellulite and is customized for every client. The program consists of 10 treatments, including SmoothShapes (a procedure that combines laser and light energy with mechanical massage and vacuum) and detoxifying body wraps. Dark chocolate—a Valentine's Day favorite—has been found to be beneficial to heart health. The cocoa bean is packed with flavonoids, a class of plant nutrients with antioxidant qualities. According to the Cleveland Clinic, flavanols—the primary flavonoid in chocolate— have a positive impact on vascular health. A report published in the journal BMJ shows a correlation between chocolate consumption and decreased risks for cardiovascular disorder and stroke. When choosing a chocolate for your health, aim for a dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 65 percent. Then, sit back, relax and indulge. Your heart will thank you.

Super foods can be found in a number of surprising places—like in your backyard pond. Spirulina is a blue-green algae rich in protein, antioxidants and other nutrients such as vitamin E and zinc. Typically, spirulina is consumed in a powder form. Vero Beach resident Michael Haggerty has come up with a more unique means of consumption: Pond Yum! popsicles. Don’t let the quirky name frighten you. Haggerty sources his spirulina from a microbiologist and then flashfreezes it raw, keeping all the living cells intact and resulting in a yummy treat. Pond Yum! comes in flavors such as ginger, mint chocolate, maple pecan and chocolate dipped, for those not fond of the fresh taste of algae. (772-7662306, heropops.com)

Gary Gregory, John Couris, Dr. M. Narendra Kini and Paul Chiapparone were influential in the partnership.

Dreamy. Introspective. Hazy. Provocative. These words describe the work of contemporary American painter and new media artist Kimberly Brooks. By blending images of recognizable figures with flowing abstraction, the artist layers representations of haute couture and glamour with tones of mystery and wonder. Based in Los Angeles, Brooks has established a national presence, and her work has been showcased in institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. From February 6 to March 6, ArtHouse429 in West Palm Beach will host a solo exhibition titled “I Notice People Disappear,” which features works inspired by eighteenth-century British India and expressed through Brooks’ unique aesthetic. Palm Beach lost a local legend in August when Palm Beach Pops Maestro Bob Lappin passed away. On February 4, the Pops will honor his memory with “The Music Lives On,” a one-nightonly tribute concert at the Kravis Center. Tickets start at $29, and proceeds benefit Lappin’s Youth Music Education Program. (561-8327469, kravis.org)

Beginning February 27, the Lake Worth Playhouse presents One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The play, adapted from the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey, brings to the stage the controversy of institutionalization during the 1960s, with sobering—and, at times, humorous—results. (561-586-6410, lakeworthplay house.org)

His Name is Mandy Patinkin Whether you know him best as Saul Berenson in the Showtime series Homeland or as Inigo Montoya in the 1987 cult classic The Princess Bride, Mandy Patinkin has been entertaining audiences for decades. In anticipation of his February 5 concert performance at the Kravis Center, we caught up with the showman to talk shop, hidden talents and what fans can expect from his “Dress Casual” tour. (561-832-7469, kravis.org) What’s in store for concertgoers at the “Dress Casual” show? Lots of new material that we’ve been working on, like Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, and always Sondheim and Randy Newman, and a guaranteed eclectic mix of anything and everything we’ve been working on. We’re planning a new CD of material that we’ve been working on over the years but have never recorded, so I’m sure I’ll want to be oiling up many of those songs as well. Of all your acting roles, which has been your favorite? The one I’ll do next. I’m always excited about the unknown and what’s around the corner, and everyone and everything that I have yet to experience. If you could pick just one gig for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why? The live concert venue. There is nothing that beats being with a live audience, and the reservoir of material to choose from is endless. What’s a little-known talent of yours? I’m fearless in a true crisis. When disaster strikes, I get extremely calm and I’m at the ready for anyone who needs me.

Room with a View The definition of “art” no longer refers solely to paintings, music and theater but has expanded to include many different mediums of expression. Interior design, for example, is the discipline of creating visual art that also serves as a functional living space. The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County honors this creative profession in “Interior Design: The Florida Room,” on display through March 29. The exhibit features vignettes of eight interior designers’ interpretations of the quintessential Florida room. “Interior design is part of our arts industry, and in this region of the country, their work has a major economic and artistic impact,” notes Rena Blades, president and CEO of the council. CAPRI

HOTEL BEL-AIR

Design muse I am inspired by what Tom Ford did in the ’90s and early 2000s at Gucci and YSL—wearable sexy clothes. I also look to Hollywood and the great films and costume designers. Favorite piece in her collection That’s like asking who your favorite child is! The dress that is the most “Mary Alice” is the Minnie, with the crystal mesh sleeves. Regularly flies to Capri and Palm Beach, because my family is there Must-watch reruns I still love Grey’s Anatomy. I also loved Gossip Girl for the amazing clothes and Mad Men. Last read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-andRock ’n’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood. It’s about the film industry in the ’70s. Favorite tunes Zac Brown Band Valentine’s Day plans At the Hotel Bel-Air [in Los Angeles] with my husband. It’s where we got engaged. Favorite spot in Palm Beach My family’s house. Eastover is the original Vanderbilt estate and is the most incredible piece of architecture. Best bite Nobu Malibu is my favorite restaurant in the world. I love the artichoke salad and the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño. Daily beauty Sunscreen. I have fair skin and use Dr. Jessica Wu’s sun care products.
