v FROM THE PUBLISHER

The Luxury Lifeline n the past few months, various experts have declared that the turbulent economy of the past few years is finally beginning to settle down. Some have even announced that “luxury is back.” But in my opinion, true luxury never left. Luxury never has been defined simply by what’s big and expensive and conspicuously consumed. Instead, it is, and always has been, a reflection of such timeless virtues as superior quality, uniqueness, personalization and anything else that’s in limited supply and therefore available to a select few. And even though most of us have made some concessions in our acquisition habits lately, our standards and our taste for the very best things in life have not changed. Instead, we have refocused our interests on products and experiences that are worth the investment. For example, according to a recent report in Fortune magazine, business at Hermès was up 10 percent at the end of last year—and there’s still a waiting list for the highly coveted Birkin handbag, a hand-stitched item that takes months to make, keeping supplies scarce. Likewise, Britain’s Ultratravel magazine cites an increase in international bookings for “authentic” vacations, such as privately guided ecological visits to Africa, Asia or Antarctica to see vanishing natural wonders. Even something as simple as thank-you notes—an elegant touch in an otherwise impersonal world—are on the rise, according to one researcher who sees an uptick in stationery sales and use of postal services. This brings up another interesting point: While we appreciate, and indeed seek, luxury, we have not forsaken the things that really matter, such as our civic duties, philanthropy and interpersonal relationships. Overall, luxury spending is expected to grow worldwide this year, according to recent research conducted by Bain & Co. That’s certainly good news, and it reinforces the role Palm Beach Illustrated plays as the most vital source for information about how we live in this community. As retailers slowly bring more luxury goods and services to market in these days of cautious optimism, aiming for your attention while you weigh decisions about future acquisitions, we’ll continue to serve as a trusted adviser, as we have done for so many years, by offering a selective mix of fascinating editorial and relevant advertising content that fits your unique interests. We trust you’ll continue to find value on every page of every issue of this magazine. To paraphrase the famous saying, luxury often is a necessity. But we’ll humbly suggest that information about luxury—true luxury—and celebration of its many aspects is just as necessary. That’s exactly why we’re here.

“The Palm Beach 20,” the annual signature feature we introduced three years ago, seems to get better and better, which is a testament to Palm Beach’s intriguing cast of characters. Though I am constantly asked, “Isn’t it hard to come up with 20 fascinating people every year?,” in fact the only difficulty is in narrowing down the field of potential subjects. Simply put, our neighbors are among the world’s most interesting, successful and powerful people. When you turn to the feature on page 72, you will see what I mean. Among our subjects this year are Burt Reynolds, the legendary actor who, to this day, captivates on screen and stage; the design duo of Mark Badgley and James Mischka, who dress the most fabulous women of show business and society; cover subject Nacho Figueras, an accomplished polo player, model and alpha male; golfer Ernie Els, who works tirelessly to help children with autism; celebrity chef Todd English; and Aussie singer and actress Olivia Newton-John and hubby John Easterling. The original photography, I hope you will agree, brings these fascinating personalities to life. The impact of this issue does not stop there. The March issue also marks our annual look at spring style. On page 114, we interpret the season’s hottest runway trends for the Palm Beach lifestyle. With pieces that are so chic and utterly wearable, “From Runway to Reality” is an indispensable resource for styling your spring and summer wardrobe. Our fashion feature, “Treasure Island” (page 92), can best be described with one word: Wow. Photographer Richard Reinsdorf captured our vision of “castaway chic” perfectly. Shot against the rugged backdrop of Blowing Rocks Preserve, the story is a visual feast of environment, mood and, of course, spectacular fashion presented in layers of texture and pattern. One of my favorite spreads in this issue is “The Envelope, Please,” a whimsical and creative tabletop pictorial inspired by this year’s Academy Award nominees for Best Motion Picture. Fashion Director Katherine Lande has assembled a host of accessories for the well-dressed table, and styled them to showcase the essence of each film. Turn to page 108 for this fun presentation. Enjoy the issue!

v GEORGINA BLOOMBERG

KATHY RUSSELL/JAMES PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY

Accomplished equestrian Georgina Bloomberg is in a groove. The 27-year-old splits her time between Wellington; North Salem, New York; and Manhattan, while studying at New York University and practicing for equestrian competitions. Daughter of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Georgina also has the charity bug. In 2006 she founded Rider’s Closet, a program that collects used riding clothes and gear and donates it to intercollegiate riders, and is involved with the Equestrian Aid Foundation and the Young Rider Program. ■ WHAT ARE YOUR RIDING GOALS? My goal is to win Olympic gold, the World Championships and the World Cup within the next few years and then quit while I’m ahead. I have never wanted to be one of those riders who try to have the longest career or show that they can still do it at an older age. ■ THEN WHAT WILL YOU DO? I would love to start my own riding clothing line. I am working with Ariat, a company that makes the best boots and riding clothing. I also plan on starting my own magazine that will focus mostly on the show-jumping world but will be well rounded in riding fashion, interviews and other features. ■ WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNTS? I’m trying to cook more at home [but] I love Echo in Palm Beach; that’s my favorite restaurant. For lunch I like Il Bellagio in CityPlace. It’s a beautiful setting and the food is amazing. CityPlace reminds me a little of home. You don’t have to drive anywhere and you have a huge selection of shops and restaurants on every block. For a night out, I love Players Club [in Wellington] since all of the horse show crowd goes there. —Lola Thélin

Fashion designer JASON WU is only 27 years old but he’s already had a phenomenal career. When he was 16, he freelanced for Integrity Toys, creating miniature outfits and patterns for dolls. Within a year Wu was the creative director and now is a partner. Wu studied at Parsons The New School of Design in New York, and in 2006, he launched his ready-to-wear line, financed by his toy company earnings. Since then, he has received industry accolades such as the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award for Women’s Ready-toWear in 2008 and was a finalist in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund for 2008. But the icing on the cake came in January 2009 when First Lady Michelle Obama wore his white one-shoulder chiffon gown to the inaugural ball. Wu’s feminine, colorful and somewhat quirky creations are a red-carpet staple for young actresses from Natalie Portman to Diane Kruger, and are sold at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and small boutiques nationwide. —Lola Thélin

Southern California’s Grand Del Mar offers modern amenities with Old World class. BY ROBERT RAGAINI

A gleaming white fountain splashes in front of an arched portecochere and a dramatic, terra-cotta villa that spreads its arms around an Old World–style courtyard. Inside the lobby, dark wood beams frame stenciled recesses in lofty ceilings, and black marble arches lead to a lounge with rich, heavy furniture and hand-carved limestone fireplaces.

Guests at The Grand Del Mar can enjoy biking and hiking in the neighboring canyon preserve, or a round of golf on the Tom Fazio-designed course.

58

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

A balcony overlooks a decorative pool and a swath of fairway of a 380-acre Tom Fazio-designed golf course. Are we in Boca Raton, or a hotel in Palm Beach? These Spanish, Venetian, Portuguese and Moroccan design elements might lead one to think so, as the inspiration for The Grand Del Mar is the architecture of Addison Mizner, whose design philosophy defined the Mediterranean ambience that has prevailed in South Florida’s resort areas since the 1920s. The deep cleft and sheer cliffs of the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve leave no doubt, though, that we are in Southern California, near San Diego. The Grand Del Mar offers a host of reasons to visit. Hollywood types come for golf and pampering by the congenial and efficient staff; families are charmed by the guided outdoor programs, indoor high-tech facilities for kids, and the separate family pool. Then there are the luxurious accommodations. For the ultimate stay, the hotel’s two presidential suites provide dual master bedrooms, spacious terraces with fireplaces, deep soaking tubs and Pratesi linens. Butlers’ pantries accommodate private chefs from the Del Mar’s gourmet restaurants, and long tables seat several dinner guests. Besides golfing on the stunningly beautiful golf course, cooled by Pacific breezes and surrounded by the canyon preserve, the hotel offers access to a long list of outdoor activities. The naturalist-led walk in the adjacent reserve is a must, while kayaking behind

a guide from a local tour operator into caves carved out of sandstone cliffs is a fun way to spend a few hours. Guests may be tempted to spend the whole day by one of four heated pools, where they find music via underwater speakers and a friendly outdoor pool bar featuring flat-screen televisions and cool cocktails. Visitors also can play tennis or take classes and work out in the fitness center.

For more citified activities—such as shopping—a shuttle ferries guests to the stores in the charming town of Del Mar. La Jolla is even more popular, with its large selection of fine boutiques and restaurants. And the symphony, opera and museums of San Diego are only a half-hour away. A hard day of playing or shopping calls for some intense downtime. The Grand Del Mar boasts a world-class spa, popular with women and men alike. Be sure to try the tension-melting, Stony Silence massage; it’s an hour and a half of pure bliss. Or book some delightful treatments for you and your special someone in the posh couple’s suite. The Grand Del Mar’s six dining venues draw serious food lovers. The crown jewel is Addison, the only five-star and five-diamond restaurant in Southern California. Chef William Bradley offers sophisticated dishes, like onion soubise with black truffles, foie gras pot de crème and a sensational loin of lamb wearing a coverlet of parsley mousse. The sommelier recommends appropriate wine pairings for each course. Although The Grand Del Mar is refreshingly young (it opened in October 2007), the fusing of its gracious elements creates the feeling of genuine Old World opulence. thegranddelmar.com ◆

GERMAN CON BRIO Audi squeezes a Lamborghini V-10 into the engine bay of its R8 supercar. The result? Magnifico.

BY HOWARD WALKER

62

Think of it in loose terms as a mixing of a little Gewürztraminer and Asti Spumante. Audi’s latest iteration of its sensational R8 supercar— the new R8 V10 5.2 FSI Quattro—is the best of both. It’s what happens when you take an R8—one of the most gorgeous creations to roll on four wheels—and swap its Audi-built V-8 with a hot-tempered Lamborghini V-10 spark-ignition engine that is similar to the Lamborghini Gallardo V-10 engine. Bellissimo! Why would Audi do that? Because they can. You see, the burgeoning Audi AG owns Lamborghini. So, in exceedingly oversimplified terms, it was just a matter of Fritz calling up Luigi, ordering up a batch of V-10s from the Lamborghini parts store, and modifying them to fit. It’s not as if the R8 was in desperate need of an injection of increased power. Its standard 4.2-liter V-8 has at its disposal a corral of 420 thoroughbred horses that can thrust the aluminum-bodied R8 toward the horizon with the urgency of the starship Enterprise going into warp speed. But for those select few sports car aficionados who live by the mantra that too much power is never quite enough, the 525 horsepower from the Lamborghini V-10 is just what the good doctor ordered. And it’s an absolutely intoxicating combo. Where-

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

as the V-8 is all big biceps and aural muscle, the V-10 screams to an insane 8,700 rpm redline, hitting the high notes like Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma. For the stopwatch clickers, those extra 105 horses and two additional cylinders mean the difference between hurtling from standstill to 60 mph in a breathtaking 3.7 seconds, instead of a slightly less breathtaking 4.4 seconds. Not that from behind the wheel you’re going to no-

tice the difference; V-8 or V-10, your body is still going to be compressed into the back of the seat and your eyelids peeled back like you’ve been riding an F-16 on full afterburner. And, of course, with the R8’s standard Quattro all-wheel drive, there’s no smoke-belching burn-outs as the rear wheels clamor for grip. With all four 19-inch Pirellis gripping at the blacktop like Velcro on velvet, the R8 just lunges off the line. Yet despite this overserving of Italian horsepower, the R8 is a pussycat to drive—well, more like a cougar on caffeine. It happily chugs along in rush-hour traffic, or does the run to the grocery

store. And unlike so many hard-core supercars, the R8’s suspension soaks up lumps and bumps like a Lexus. Its cockpit, too, is the height of civility. It’s easy to climb in and out of without needing a course in limbo dancing. And there’s no shortage of legroom or headroom for the vertically enhanced. And in true Audi fashion, the quality of the fixtures and fittings is amazing—the simplicity and clarity of the instruments, the tactile beauty of its steering wheel and knurl-edged gear shifter. Gorgeous. Speaking of gears, you have the option of a six-speed manual shifter or a six-speed R-tronic manual-automatic. Unless you’re desperate for the car to do the shifting for you, stick with the manual. You can read a chapter of War & Peace in the time it takes for the automatic to change gears, whereas the manual has the precision of flicking on a light switch. To have a little Italian soul in your Teutonic Audi will cost you $146,000 for the six-speed and $155,100 for the R-tronic, while the V-8 six-speed costs $114,200 and $123,300 for R-tronic. But make no mistake: When the tachometer needle spins toward that soaring red line and you feel the punch of 525 Italian stallions, it’ll have you singing like Luciano. ◆

Nacho Figueras is known locally as one of the hottest players on the polo scene, but his reputation reaches internationally. As the spokesmodel for Ralph Lauren Polo fragrances, guest on television shows such as Oprah, Martha and Gossip Girl, and one of the world’s most handsome men, according to a Vanity Fair poll, Figueras has one of the most recognizable faces on earth. He takes his celebrity in stride, using it to promote his first love: polo. Figueras, who lives with his family in his native Argentina and in Wellington, began playing polo professionally at age 17 and now is a six goaler playing on the 20-goal The Wanderers/Isla Carroll and 26-goal Black Watch teams. He is singularly dedicated to the sport, focusing in equal parts on winning and on bringing more spectators fieldside.

The Lady of Luxe Kara Ross Photographed by Michiko Kurisu at the Ross residence, New York

Jewelry designer Kara Ross does not think small. One of the hottest names in the world of haute baubles, she’s known for grand, modern and geometric statement pieces with colorful gemstones, and that suits her international clientele just fine. Ross launched her eponymous luxury accessories company in 2003, added a handbag line in 2007, is launching a belt line for fall/winter 2010 and is collaborating with Saga Furs. The part-time Palm Beacher, who visits the island on weekends, serves on Georgetown University’s board of regents, the Museum of Modern Art’s photo acquisition committee and is very involved with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Despite a busy schedule, Ross always makes time for her four children and husband, Stephen. Every summer the family takes a vacation boat ride to a new destination with guests in tow.

The Hollywood Legend Burt Reynolds Photographed by Aaron Wells at the Reynolds residence, Jupiter

He’s one of the most recognizable actors in the world, and one of the most versatile. Burt Reynolds tackles both dramatic roles, like his award-winning turn as Jack Horner in Boogie Nights, and comedic parts, like the iconic Bandit in Smokey and the Bandit, with the power of a linebacker. He brings that power and a true love of the craft to the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre in Jupiter, teaching courses in film acting, and putting on productions with his Underthe-Bridge Players. “I always felt like I had to give something back, and what I have to give back is knowledge of film, how to get the job, how to go read and hopefully how to act on the set,” he says.

Palm Beach County has gotten a little wilder, thanks to celebrity chef Todd English. His Wild Olives by Todd English just opened up in the Shops at Boca Center and in CityPlace. With his Figs restaurant already at Macy’s in Palm Beach Gardens, could the chef be planning a move down here from Boston? No, but, he says, a lot of his customers from up North are here in the winter, so he wants them to enjoy the handcrafted pasta dishes, flatbreads and other rustic Mediterranean delights he offers at his other restaurants. Just don’t ask which of his creations he prefers. “That would be like asking me to choose my favorite child,” says the father of three.

Harvey Oyer III and Monique McCall are the quintessential family, juggling careers and social involvements and chauffeuring a daughter to her many activities. Oyer is a partner in Shutts & Bowen and recently was named one of the country’s best lawyers in The Best Lawyers in America. He also serves on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, the South Florida Science Museum and the Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The fifth generation Floridian also is the author of a children’s book series called The Adventures of Charlie Pierce. Fiancée McCall, a singer and former model, recently released her third CD, Reckless Heart, a country music compilation that she recorded in Nashville. When time permits, the family escapes to their cattle ranch in Okeechobee for peace and quiet.

The youngest player ever to appear on a winning U.S. Open team (in 1998, at age 14), Nick Roldan has become a phenomenon on the polo field. With championships in the C.V. Whitney, Monty Waterbury, Joe Barry Memorial and Ylvisaker Cup, among others, the 27-year-old now is the highest rated American polo player (along with Mike Azzaro), at nine goals. He has played on the United States’ 2009 Westchester Cup team and has saddled up with Britain’s Prince Harry. This year, he is playing on the 20-goal Bendabout and 26-goal Grand Champions teams at International Polo Club in Wellington. Roldan, whose aim is to reach the ranking of 10 goals, has achievements off the field, as well: He recently landed a modeling contract with the Wilhelmina agency.

Mark Badgley (right) and James Mischka have long been known for dressing celebrities like Madonna and Kate Winslet for the red carpet. Their glamorous gowns also have gained a following among the Palm Beach social set. Now the design (and life) partners have a major presence on the island: Last year they opened a boutique on Worth Avenue, and moved into an apartment around the corner from their new store. For years, Badgley and Mischka had a place in Wellington, where Badgley boards and shows horses in the equestrian circuit, an avocation he has cultivated since high school. When they are not designing for their couture or readyto-wear lines, the two enjoy relaxing at their farm in Lexington, Kentucky, and spending weekends in Palm Beach. Their passions include entertaining friends at home (Mischka reportedly is an amazing cook), interior design projects, riding horses (Badgley) and collecting vintage cars (Mischka). The Open Book Parker Ladd Photographed by Robert Nelson in studio

Parker Ladd reads about 100 books a year, and skims another 50. He then selects his favorites and prepares interviews for Palm Beach’s Author Breakfast Series, which he created six years ago as a spinoff of A&E’s Open Book, a show he hosted for seven years. Chances are he could probably do all of that work in his sleep, having spent 24 years as a publishing executive with Charles Scribner’s Sons in New York, and 20 more with the Association of American Publishers. In addition to the breakfasts, Ladd serves on the POSH Palm Beach committee and is the vice president of Literacy Partners, an organization he cofounded more than 32 years ago, and is involved with the library programs in Quogue, New York, where he spends his summers. When it’s time for fun, Ladd is known for playing a mean game of bridge and hosting dinner parties with his longtime partner, fashion designer Arnold Scaasi.

Yvonne Boice Zucaro has many starring roles—businesswoman, philanthropist, chairman of the Palm Beach International Film Festival, crusader for women around the world, and, most recently, newlywed (she married World Trade Center Palm Beach founder Al Zucaro in 2009). The Boca Raton resident is the owner of the Shoppes at Village Pointe and Fugazy International Travel, and recently was named Outstanding Business Leader by Northwood University, and Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year by the National Association of Fundraising Professionals. “What blesses one, blesses all,” she says. “There are so many ways to give, not only financially, but also your time and expertise. That, many times, is worth more than dollars.”

The Striker Jozy Altidore Photographed by Chris Brunskill

Jozy Altidore’s soccer career is only beginning, yet the 20year-old already has made national and international headlines. The forward player, who grew up in Boca Raton, learned to play soccer from his father and began his professional career with Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls in 2006. Altidore, who has Haitian roots, has been supporting friend and musician Wyclef Jean’s foundation Yéle Haiti to help victims of the recent earthquake. Currently playing for Hull City of the English Premier League on loan from Villarreal of Spain, he’ll join the U.S. men’s team in Amsterdam this month to play an exhibition against the Netherlands. Although the U.S. roster for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will not be announced until May, Altidore is expected to be a major component of the team. 84

Pro golfer Ernie Els strives to be the best on the links. He and his wife, Liezl, also are striving to create The Els Center of Excellence in South Florida, which will help children with autism by bringing together education, medical and professional treatment, and research. Their son Ben is autistic, which has prompted them to join the fight against the disorder. “We’ve seen some centers around the world,” Els says. “This one, we want to make it the best, and really get the right people involved and give the kids the best care we can.” Ernie is focusing on the U.S. leg of the PGA Tour this season, giving him more time at home in Jupiter with Liezl, Ben and daughter Samantha.

The third time around is the sweetest for Sam and Libby Edelman. The pair hit fashion gold first with Esprit and then with their own eponymous line, famous for popularizing leather ballet flats. Now they are back with two shoe labels—Sam Edelman, which was named 2009 Brand of the Year by Footwear News, and Libby.Edelman, which will soon expand to include jewelry and handbags. And there are talks to expand both labels even further, with apparel and other accessories. When they are not making fabulous footwear, the couple loves riding and training with their horses at their Wellington stables. The Fashion Phenom Josie Natori Photographed by Gregory Ross at the Natori residence, Palm Beach

Josie Natori singlehandedly revolutionized the fashion world when she launched the Natori Company in 1977, creating elegant and sensuous lingerie and sleepwear. As the CEO and president, Natori used her nine years of experience as an investment banker to expand her company to offer collections of fragrances, home, eyewear, readyto-wear and accessories. The selfproclaimed Palm Beach addict purchased a home here two years ago and says the island’s way of life inspired the easy, versatile dressing concept of the Natorious readyto-wear collection. Natori serves on the boards of Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Women In Need and Asian Cultural Council, works with the Ellis Island Foundation and is the doting grandmother of a baby boy.

“You look familiar.” Larry Feldman, CEO of Subway Development Corp., heard that a lot as he was making sandwiches at his first Subway franchise in Washington, D.C. Probably because he also was the deputy minority council for the House banking committee. “I would do congressional hearings in the morning, then at noon, I would run across the street, take off my jacket, put on my apron, and the lobbyists would come in,” he says. Now, 32 years later, the Boca Raton resident is set to open his 1,100th Subway franchise, has developed the upscale Subway Café and continues to encourage corporations to get more involved in giving back to charities.

The three-year-old tournament has raised approximately $1.2 million for Lynn Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Center at Boca Raton Community Hospital and University of Miami’s Sylvester Cancer Center. This past January, with the help of Boca Raton Foundation’s Go Pink Challenge, the tournament unveiled the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel MammoVan, named in honor of Pressel’s mom, who lost her breast cancer battle in 2003. Now in her fifth year on the LPGA Tour, Pressel recently took part in the 2009 Solheim Cup win against Europe.

The incomparable

The dapper and discreet designer lets PBI inside his world.

Mr. Maier

By Lola ThÉlin | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREGORY ROSS

If fashion designer Tomas Maier wanted to, he could go out every night to extravagant affairs in New York and Milan and rub elbows with the who’s who of the fashion and celebrity worlds. Maier, however, often chooses to keep a more low-key profile in Gulf Stream, a town south of Palm Beach. Maier and his partner, Andrew Preston, arrived here in 2006, drawn by the scenery and the promise of a peaceful life. “I wanted to live somewhere with a beautiful climate and be more outdoors. I’d lived in Paris for 20 years and it’s so focused on the inside,” says Maier. “Miami was a good city, and I lived there for a while, but at some point I got interested in something a little bit more quiet and serene.”

104 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

ing it all into his internal computer. “What you see, places you go, people you meet, I don’t write it down,” he says. “It all goes into the brain. I imagine it and it comes out at the right time.” Maier has further expressed his creativity by opening the third branch of his namesake store on Via Mizner in Palm Beach (the other two are in Miami and the Hamptons) in 2007. The store not only carries Maier’s designs and collaborative pieces, but also his favorite movies, tomes, candles, teas and other hardto-find items. “I like to have something that is unique. You come here and it’s a shopping experience. You won’t see it anywhere else. I’m an individualist,” says Maier. Obviously, Maier is one who enjoys being busy, juggling projects and products simultaneously. In 2001, he accepted the position of creative director for Milan-based leather-goods company Bottega Veneta, and is credited for resurrecting the company from near bankruptcy. Almost every month, the designer leaves

Maier has a long history of fashionable endeavors. Throughout his career, he has designed menswear at Sonia Rykiel and served as Revillon’s creative director. He designed women’s wear for Hermès for nine years before launching his eponymous label with Preston in 1997. “For both of us, it was a new departure,” says Preston, who is the COO of Tomas Maier. “Self-financed and fully controlled by the two of us, it was a leap of faith, as we both believed strongly in our product even though it did not fit any of the classic definitions of fashion.” The label, which is based in Delray Beach, is what Maier calls clothing for the time off. “It’s for that time where you don’t have to wear conventional dress code. It’s not for work or an evening out.” Discreet fashion at its finest, the line is impeccably constructed with quiet simplicity. “I design casual clothes so I’m in casual places,” Maier says. “It’s funny because you walk here and there’s all of this fancy stuff,

For me, Palm Beach is all about a certain casualness, a sophistication and Quality.

but it’s not how I live in Palm Beach at all. For me, Palm Beach is all about a certain casualness, a sophistication and quality.” Maier was born in the Black Forest of Germany, the son of an architect. His design aesthetic—clean, quality design and no unnecessary elements—was shaped by his upbringing, childhood home, architects (“their rigor and discipline”) and people he’s worked with. “If I couldn’t be a designer, I’d be an architect,” says Maier. “I’d spend my afternoons after school in my dad’s office. [We’d] look at plans and go to architecture sites and I learned about the process—drawing, measuring something, digging a hole, putting in the foundation and the wall. Everything comes together a year and a half later, and that’s, in a way, what I do.” Maier uses that architect mentality in his designs— “no fuss, something that is well constructed and built to work”—and absorbs inspiration wherever he goes. If he is curious about a specific building or an art gallery, he’ll fly there just to see and experience it, soak106 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

the comforts of his beach home and jets off to Milan to work on the Bottega collections. “If I work on only one project, then I’m too impatient,” he says. “It’s more fun to move from one to the next and by the time I come back, things have moved ahead and so on. That’s how I work and why I’m also traveling, working at different workshops and ateliers and on different product categories.” The designer travels a minimum of two weeks out of every month for work, so when he’s home, he opts for peace and quiet with Preston and their two dogs. “There are always people around me at work,” he says. “I’d rather be removed and have time to think between meetings and projects. It’s peaceful here. It makes a difference.” Home is a 1960s Bermuda beach house, which is eclectically decorated with objects reflecting the couple’s international lifestyle and passion for photography, sculpture and contemporary art. Maier says he made many, many changes to the home, but refused to

tear it down. “I hate the craziness here of always tearing things down,” he says. “It takes away from the town’s character.” Instead, Maier restored the house and redesigned the interior floor plan. Doorways were enlarged, raised and lined up with doors on opposite sides of rooms to create a flow and allow for open communication. “Many times in these houses, people are so locked up in different areas,” he says. “How are these people even talking to each other? They must have walkie-talkies or intercoms. Or text, ‘Where are you?’” As for fun, Maier insists he finds that in his work: “I picked this. It was not pushed on me. On the contrary, my parents hoped that I’d become an architect and take over my dad’s firm.” But, he admits, a walk on the beach is just as good for the soul. u

Maier’s Palm Beach store is located in Addison Mizner’s former design studio, and offers home and lifestyle items handpicked by the designer. palmbeachillustrated.com | MARCH 2010 107

THE RISE OF CACHAÇA The national drink of Brazil is finding a home in the United States.

Cachaça is the national drink of Brazil. Nearly 1.5 billion liters are produced each year, making it the third most popular spirit in the world. Like some types of rum, cachaça is distilled from sugar cane, and is available in both light and gold versions. Lighter colored cachaça is mass-produced in column stills, is bottled without aging, and primarily is used in cocktails. The amber variety is made in small pot stills, like Cognac, and aged in various types of wood barrels before release. This type of artisan cachaça has become enormously popular in the United States over the past few years. “I wanted to introduce a truly premium cachaça to this country, one that reflected the Brazilian heritage in the right way,” says Matti Anttila, founder and owner of Cabana Cachaça. Anttila worked in Brazil after college and discovered the spirit. When he returned to the United States and couldn’t find it, he decided to create his own. “I found a distillery that was small, innovative and had great quality control. We spent some time refining the formula, and launched the brand in June 2006,” he says. A single-estate cachaça, Cabana is double distilled and aged for nine months in native Brazilian barrels. The result is a spirit that is rounder and smoother on the palate than most, with a refined taste profile and light citrus notes. It is typical of the small-batch cachaças that Americans have begun to find so intriguing. Connoisseurs seek out brands such as Rochinha, which has been made on the same small farm since 1902; aged in oak casks, it is available in five- or 12-year-old versions. GRM,

Premium cachaça has arrived in the United States partly due to the influence of Leblon, a brand created in Brazil in 2005. vested in the company, which helped catapult Leblon into the mainstream. In part, the cachaça craze can be traced to the popularity of the caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. The drink is essentially a mojito without the mint. To make one, muddle half a large lime together with two teaspoons of sugar; add several ounces of cachaça and a cup of ice, and shake vigorously. The caipirinha is turning up at clubs around the nation and is a fixture of Brazilian restaurants, where it is sometimes prepared on carts that are rolled through the dining room. Traditionally, Brazilians used industrial cachaça in their caipirinhas, but the booming cocktail culture in this country is changing the pattern, as more Americans prefer to make their cocktails with smoother, aged cachaça. Purists drink it from a snifter, and find it to be as satisfying as premium rum, tequila or Cognac. ◆

Michelle Bernstein’s new restaurant at the Omphoy Ocean Resort more than lives up to the famous chef’s reputation.

SIGVISION

Malaysian Curried Snapper is served on a banana leaf with gunga pea rice and heart of palm slaw.

126 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Michelle Bernstein has garnered many accolades in her career as a chef. She won a James Beard Award in 2008 and defeated Bobby Flay in Food Network’s Iron Chef America. She presides over two successful restaurants in Miami, Michy’s and Sra. Martinez. Not content to rest on her laurels, she has ventured north and opened her latest establishment, Michelle Bern-

stein’s at The Omphoy, in the new Omphoy Ocean Resort, the first oceanfront hotel to open in Palm Beach in several decades. Bernstein brings a dramatic new sensibility to Palm Beach, which is both unusual and refreshing. Her ingredients are pristine, her flavors are bold and assertive, and she blends elements of the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Asia and the American South into a seamless whole. Her restaurant is located on the second floor of the Omphoy, with views of the ocean framed by large picture windows. The interior is modern, dark and peaceful, enhanced by backlighting and mirrors, watched over by two stone Buddhas that sit at the rear of the room. Among the Signature Starters, Spinach and Feta Croquetas ($7) are fried to perfection on the outside, juicy and flavorful within, and accompanied by a sweet, rich fig marmalade dipping sauce. Calamari a la Plancha ($15) arrive in a porcelain dish, rather than on a wooden board, but are still delicious. Served over a scampi-style risotto, they are enhanced with an herb oil and toasted garlic. Seafood occupies pride of place among the entrées. Cioppino ($34) is a fish stew prepared with a fiery tomato broth, Maine lobster, stone crabs, bay scallops and panisse. There’s a Salt Crusted Fish of the Day, and if Mediterranean dorade is offered on the night of your visit, grab it—the fish is moist, flaky and succulent. Malaysian Curried Snapper ($28) offers just the right

amount of intense but well-modulated heat, offset with gunga pea rice and heart of palm slaw. For carnivores, there’s a filet mignon and New York strip, but the Braised Short Ribs ($34) are worth seeking out. Tender and almost totally devoid of fat, the meat is presented in its natural juices over a potato purée with leafy greens. The wine list is just as interesting as the menu. The several hundred selections have been carefully chosen, and are completely non-commercial; there are nearly 30 wines

by the glass, and each is worthwhile in its own way. A bottle of Betts and Scholl Riesling from Australia’s Eden Valley ($50) is bright and vivacious, a nice match for the cuisine. There’s an extensive list of craft beers and designer cocktails, and diners even have the option of sampling premium sake by the glass. Service is remarkably professional and totally unruffled. The front waiters are knowledgeable and personable, and create a homelike feeling in a busy dining room.

The management team takes the time to chat with guests at each table. Make a point of beginning or ending your meal on the outdoor terrace, one floor below the dining room, where you may sip an aperitif or nightcap while watching the surf lap the shore. Above all, make sure you reserve—this is a new and popular destination, and the combination of superior food and moderate prices has made it rightfully appealing.

Executive Chef David Rodriguez at the Oriente at the Costa d’Este Beach Resort is unveiling a new winter menu, full of new Cuban-inspired dishes with influences from Spanish, Latin and Creole traditions. The Ceviches list has been changed to include Nantucket Bay scallops with sunchokes, radish sprouts and toasted culantro seed, and Bacalao (saltfish) with tricolor peppers, cilantro, citrus and extra-virgin olive oil. New entrées include Sarsuela, an authentic Catalan seafood pot served with sofrito and white rice; and Lechón Asado, slow roasted marinated pork, yucca fufu, sautéed greens, sour orange and black bean broth. Your tastebuds will samba with joy. Vero Beach (772-410-0100, costadeste.com)

SUNNY SIDE UP

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not also make it the yummiest? Brothers Leonardo and Luis Espin have brought Eggsotic at the Garden Club to the island. Guests can expect the same delicious breakfast and lunch menu that has been a popular draw to their West Palm Beach Eggsotic Bistro location. The Palm Beach restaurant also is open for dinner. We love the brothers’ take on a Philly cheese steak. Wrapped in a crêpe, seared top sirloin is served with blue cheese, caramelized onions and mushroom duxelles. The true menu winner is the light and satisfying Sicilian Benedict—two perfectly poached eggs served with steak ham, fresh tomatoes and basil and covered with homemade hollandaise sauce. You’ll wish you had the appetite for two, and you’ll have a hard time not ordering the dish over and over again. The menu also features omelets, French toasts and breakfast wraps, as well as salads and sandwiches, all prepared fresh. Palm Beach (561-623-7553)

BY THE SEA Bold and innovative are two words to describe the menu at the Atlantic Grille in the newly opened Seagate Hotel & Spa in Delray Beach. Executive Chef Adam Gottlieb has put together a wonderful array of contemporary dishes including panseared sea scallops with shiitake, pancetta, asparagus and artichokes (shown), and a Maine lobster “pot pie.” The spicy seafood bouillabaisse gets an Asian kick with a curry broth and Thai basil. While the menu is heavy on signature seafood dishes, including handmade lobster tagliatelle, there also are meat dishes to satisfy the hungriest carnivore. UN PEU DE LA CAUSERIE BY ORVILLE BULMAN, 1963

agenda

CULTURE v ISLAND SCENE When Orville Bulman painted his first works of Haiti in the early 1950s, they were based on imagination and a few pictures of Haiti he’d discovered. The self-taught artist, who wintered in Palm Beach, made his first trip to the Caribbean island in March of 1952, and the residents, style and sense of living became lifelong muses. His whimsical paintings of graceful women and men with their playful children had an international appeal and helped transcend color barriers. Several of his works are being offered by Edward and Deborah Pollack Fine Art in Palm Beach. edwardanddeborahpollack.com —Lola Thélin PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2010 145

The Festival of the Arts Boca returns with a tribute to Russian artistry in dance, music and film with the help of the Russian National Orchestra, Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky of the American Ballet Theatre, and Rus s i a n - i n s p i r e d films Anastasia and Dr. Zhivago. For the literature program, several distinguished American writers are speaking. On top of our must-see list is hisDoris Kearns Goodwin torian Doris Kearns Goodwin, who will give a lecture and interview husband and author Richard Goodwin on March 8. PBI spoke to Goodwin about her latest adventures. PBI: What is the topic of your next book? GOODWIN: It’s going to be about Theodore Roosevelt and the muckraker journalists. They were a group of journalists at the turn of the twentieth century that were at McClure’s Magazine, and Ida Tarbell is there, Ray Baker and Lincoln Steffens. I’m also including Roosevelt’s relationship with Polk, who’s his successor, because they once were great friends and allies and

The Count de Hoernle Amphiteater in Boca Raton

then broke apart in 1912 when they ran against each other. What fiction books do you read? When I’m writing on a particular subject, I read the fiction that relates to that era as part of my research. But the truth is at night when I go to sleep I read mysteries. I’m now into Ann Perry. What do you do for fun? The main thing we do every night, since our kids are now grown, is go to a restaurant where there’s a bar and all of our friends gather night after night after night. It’s a huge relaxation. The other thing that takes part of my time is baseball. We have season tickets to the Red Sox. We go to dinner ahead of time and then go to the games. What will you discuss during your lecture? I’ll probably talk about presidents at war and look at the difference of the ways presidents have studied problems of war. I’d be able to [discuss] Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson and Lincoln. The fourth annual 10-day festival runs March 5 to March 13. Performances and lectures are held at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater at the Centre for the Arts in Mizner Park in Boca Raton. Call for ticket information and prices. FINALE v PERSONAL STYLE Fashion designer ISAAC MIZRAHI is a man of many talents. He has designed costumes for screen and stage (including The Women, for which he won a Drama Desk Award in 2002), authored books on style, hosted television programs and even starred in his own off-Broadway show, Les Mizrahi. Isaac, who designs ready-to-wear for women and is the creative director for the Liz Claiborne brand, recently began offering his lifestyle collection, IsaacMizrahiLive!, on QVC. Colorful, authentically stylish and a little irreverent, he has become an icon in the world of fashion. Who else would design a dress completely out of Alaskan salmon skin (he did this for the Smithsonian’s CooperHewitt, National Design Museum last April)? —Daphne Nikolopoulos 1 1. ASTAIRE CASE His Spring 2010 collection was inspired by the Fred Astaire movies of the 1950s. “He was so dapper,” he says. “His movies are very iconic for me.” 180 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
