HIGH ROAD

Healthy and Wise

Wellness may be what everyone strives for, but, as everyone who’s ever seen a wellness wheel or followed #wellnesswednesday on Instagram can attest, it has become something of a cliché. Authentic wellness goes beyond the trends and the gloss of social media: It captures an equanimous state of being that springs from joy and contentment, which come from respecting your body and loving your life, with all its ups and downs.

It’s not often that you come across someone who radiates true wellness, but I certainly felt it when meeting Daphne Oz. It’s not because she eats all the right things or is a perfect size 4. Daphne is just happy in her skin, and it shows in her exuberance and sense of humor. So when she gives advice about anything from life hacks to parenting, you want to listen. She’s so real that she inspires you to live better.

In this wellness-themed issue, we talked to Daphne about juggling family (she has four children under the age of 8!), a career as a prominent television host and author, and a busy social life—and maintaining a balance through it all. Though she makes it look effortless, she’s the first to admit it’s not easy, and sometimes a reset is required. She tells us her strategy for resetting and finding balance—a topic she addresses in her new cookbook, Eat Your Heart Out—in “The Land of Oz,” on page 82. Don’t miss it.

There are many ways to achieve well-being at home—just ask the professionals of the home design industry. In “Building Impact,” we explore the links between habitat and health, and the new trend of building for wellness. Healthy solutions for the home have never been more relevant. Through practices like biophilic design, sustainable and safe construction materials, dynamic lighting to work with the body’s circadian rhythms, and areas dedicated to physical and mental health, the new health-forward buildings actually help us live better. Turn to page 100 for more.

There’s much more to discover in the issue, from the story behind adaptogens and how to incorporate them in your life (“Living with Ivey,” page 50) to the latest in self-care rituals (page 106) and the best sneakers for fitness and style (“The Edit,” page 58). The pages are packed with information that I hope you’ll find useful in your own wellness journey.
