TIME TO BREATHE

After six months of party-hopping and social shenanigans, May signals, at last, the wind-down to summer. This transitionary month between high season and low-key bliss catches us in a wistful mood, enjoying quiet time with friends before everyone disperses and getting excited about the carefree days ahead. Sisters Beth Aschenbach and Danielle Norcross certainly have gotten into the spirit. The blogging duo behind Palm Beach Lately traveled to Harbour Island for a postseason taste of genteel Bahamian life à la India Hicks. Having known these ladies for some time, I had no doubt they would be island insiders within 48 hours. Indeed, they have discovered everything from where to get the best lobster quesadilla to the top spots for envy-inducing Instagram pics. They share their insight (and charming photos) in “Bahama Bound” on page 52. As you gear up for summer, you’ll need a few good toys. Whether they have four wheels, two wings, or a single, powerful VTEC engine that takes you from road to water, the thrill rides curated by our automotive editor, Howard Walker, promise to leave their pilots breathless. Check them out in “The Fun Factor” on page 62. In this issue, we also invite you to meet five of our community’s most interesting upand-comers. In “Palm Beach Rising,” we feature men and women who have achieved success early—and show no signs of letting up on the throttle of advancement. Our cover subject, Paige Bellissimo, is a perfect example. A competitive show jumper, she suffered an injury last year but already is training to get back in the saddle. Given her determination, we wouldn’t be surprised if she conquered the circuit next season. Our other subjects also have slayed their chosen professions, from ballroom dancing to aquaculture. Read their compelling stories beginning on page 42. Enjoy the issue! Editor’s

SPECIALIZING IN FIRST EDITIONS, THE RAPTIS INVENTORY INCLUDES BETWEEN 4,000 and 5,000 BOOKS AT ANY GIVEN TIME, RANGING FROM THE NUREMBERG CHRONICLES PRINTED IN THE LATE 1490S TO ADAM SMITH’S 1776 ECONOMIC MAGNUM OPUS WEALTH OF NATIONS TO A FIRST EDITION OF TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR HARPER LEE. “IT’S AMAZING TO ACTUALLY OPEN UP THE PAGES AND SEE THE BOOKS AS THEY WERE WHEN THEY FIRST ENTERED INTO THE WORLD,” SAYS RAPTIS, WHO TRAVELS EXTENSIVELY IN ORDER TO AUGMENT HIS OFFERINGS. “I’VE BEEN TO 75 COUNTRIES AND ALL CORNERS OF THE GLOBE SEARCHING FOR BOOKS.” WHILE THE RAPTIS RARE BOOKS COLLECTION IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING, HERE ARE FIVE FIRST EDITIONS WE’D LOVE TO ADD TO OUR DREAM BOOKSHELF. Moby Dick by Herman Melville, 1851, $65,000. Melville’s tale of captain Ahab’s white whale flopped upon release, and he eventually gave up writing professionally in order to earn a living as a customs inspector. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, 1885, $10,000. Ernest Hemingway once described Twain’s Huckleberry Finn as the book that inspired all modern literature. Etiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage by Emily Post, 1922, $5,000. A must-read for any natty Palm Beacher, Post’s guide to proper decorum was an instant best-seller, one that has been updated throughout the decades to address modern etiquette issues. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925, $100,000. The Great Gatsby barely made a blip on the literary radar during its initial release, but its fate turned around during WWII when it was distributed to soldiers as a free paperback. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein, 1974, $20,000. Every copy of this collection of kid-friendly rhymes is a gem, but the first edition available at Raptis Rare Books features an additional poem handwritten by the bard himself.

Timepiece cognoscenti are making a beeline to Investments in Time in Palm Beach. Horology honcho Peter Planes III, a regular on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, opened this bijoux shop in February to share his expertise and inventory of rare clocks, wristwatches, pocket watches, and collectibles. “There’s not much jewelry a man can wear, and a watch is reflective of his personality,” says Planes. In addition to timepieces, Planes also carries unusual sports memorabilia, including glittering accessories owned by such icons as baseball great Joe DiMaggio and heavyweight champ Joe Frazier. Insider About Face
Artist Olga Sweet revels in the challenges of portraiture. Originally from Moscow, Sweet specializes in works in oil and graphite that accurately depict a subject and also imbue a unique artistic essence. “I am attracted to the difficulties of the genre, both the technical difficulties of creating a likeness and the challenge of creating an aesthetically sound piece of art,” she says. Though based in Connecticut, Sweet frequently follows her clients to Palm Beach and is active in the county’s philanthropic scene, donating her skills and services to area charities like the Neil S. Hirsch Boys & Girls Club in Wellington. She recently spoke with PBI about the art of portraiture and factors to keep in mind when commissioning a portrait. (olga-sweet.squarespace.com)
Portraits with
a Purpose
When Perry Cohen went missing at sea in July 2015, he was just two weeks away from starting classes at Jupiter Community High School’s magnet program at the Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. In honor of Perry’s love of the ocean and interest in environmental sciences, his family has channeled their grief into action by partnering with Jupiter High to create the Perry J. Cohen Wetlands Laboratory. Nick Korniloff, Perry's stepfather and the founder of Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art fair, and Ryan Ross, a close family friend and owner of Arcature Fine Art in Palm Beach, are using their connections in the art world to help raise funds and awareness for the project with Portraits for Perry. Through this program, portraits by renowned artist Al Baseer Holly can be commissioned for $10,000, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the Perry J. Cohen Foundation to support the establishment of the laboratory. Artist Shepard Fairey designed a unique logo for the foundation and will
22
also paint a large-scale mural at the lab. “Perry really wanted to work in this field,” says Korniloff. “We thought this would be a great way to give back to the community that has done so much for us.” Fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger (pictured above) has already commissioned a portrait, and several other celebrities have jumped onboard to show their support for Perry. The goal is to open the facility, which will cost an estimated $400,000, to coincide with what would have been Perry’s high school graduation. (pjcf.org) —Jane Moore
Artist Olga Sweet has painted portraits of Prince Harry (left) and polo star Nacho Figueras (below).
PBI: What do you love most about portraiture and the challenge of painting people? Sweet: I really like faces. Trying to depict something very special about a person [by painting them] is such a puzzle. Portraits get a bad reputation with modern or avant-garde artists because people tend to think of very traditional portraits, which can be so boring. You go to university halls and they’re all the same. [But there are] a million ways to paint a person. However, sometimes this can stray too far from the goal of paying tribute to a person. An artist isn’t just exercising his imagination, talents, and technical ability. There’s a fine line between finding your own style of painting and having the responsibility of painting the person who commissioned the portrait. How should sitters go about choosing their clothing? It depends on what you want the final result to be. Is it a formal portrait? Or, is it a portrait just for [you]? Then consider your favorite pieces of clothing and what items make you feel more like you. Will you allow your subjects to pose with pets? I have such a respect for pets because they’re a huge part of our lives. I’m delighted if someone wants to have a pet in a picture. I think kings and queens have their spaniels and corgis, so why not? I’ve painted several portraits of people, particularly children, with pets. They can make a portrait less stiff. However, several photographs of the pet can help because they don’t always sit too well. What advice do you give people prior to a sitting? Women should have their hair down and wear little makeup. But other than that, just be happy. There’s no special preparation. It’s a very exciting time, and adults are usually as excited as children because it’s such a gift to be painted.

LOBSTER LIKE A MAINE NATIVE
CHATHAM BARS INN
CHATHAM BARS INN
Built in 1914, the Chatham Bars Inn provides an authentic setting and hands-on experiences, like its Great White Shark Expeditions (above).
Maine lobster isn’t just a meal at the swish Camden Harbour Inn (camdenharbourinn. com) but rather a two-day, ocean-to-table experience. Through the Inn’s “Lobster Like a Maine Native” package, you’ll start with a journey out to sea on a working lobster boat to master tricks of the trade from local fishermen, including measuring and selecting the day’s best for imminent lobster feasts. Return to the kitchen of the inn’s signature fine-dining restaurant, Natalie’s (nataliesrestaurant. com), to don an apron and study the finer details of preparing these delectable crustaceans under the tutelage of executive chefs Chris Long and Shelby Stevens. Learn the secrets to a dreamy, creamy lobster bisque (spoiler: there’s no actual cream), a juicy lobster roll, and shell-on presentations before finally gorging on your personal creations. Once you’ve emerged from your lobster coma the next day, prepare to do it all again— this time with an innovative, five-course, wine-paired lobster tasting menu. Work off the shellfish indulgences with strolls along Camden’s boat-laced harbor and small downtown or retreat to a sumptuous suite above the restaurant; this is, after all, the nicest hotel in Maine. Splurge on the Royal

MEET CAPE COD’S FIERCE LOCALS For the third year in a row, legendary Cape Cod property Chatham Bars Inn (chatham barsinn.com) has added an unlikely activity to its family-friendly roster. A partnership with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (atlanticwhiteshark.org) allows Chatham’s guests the opportunity to shadow great white shark researchers as they tag and identify the ocean’s apex predator, which, thanks to a rebound in the gray seal population, has made a comeback off the shores of Massachusetts. Scientist Lindsay Graff hosts this riveting expedition, which will run Mondays and Thursdays from July 3 to October 19 (weather permitting) and foster a newfound respect for the misunderstood kings of the seas. Prep for the trip by downloading the conservancy’s Sharktivity app that monitors great white sightings and movements and promotes peaceful coexistence between shark and man. If this adventure sounds intense, there’s always canoeing, kayaking,

EMBARK ON A DISTILLERY TOUR Trending now in New England: small-batch distilleries producing America’s newest concepts in liquid greatness, from beet root vodka in northern New Hampshire to apple brandy and moonshine in southern Connecticut. As of 2017 the region’s distillery count had surpassed 60, with more than half open for tours and tastings (most by appointment only). Each seems to have its own fascinating backstory and a strong personality at the helm, but two must-visits on any distillery road trip are WhistlePig Farm (whistlepigwhiskey. com) in Shoreham, Vermont, and Privateer International (privateerrum.com) in Ipswich,
Massachusetts. At WhistlePig’s 500-acre farm and distillery, witness all components of rye whiskey production—from grain to glass— and reserve a stay overnight to be a part of the late-night distillation process. At Privateer, visitors can engage with some very passionate rum makers and taste a great deal of highquality amber rum, with the ability to return to a posh Boston hotel only 45 minutes away. « WhistlePig specializes in rye whiskey, like the 14-yearaged Boss Hog.
WHISTLEPIG
Salem’s history may be rooted in witchcraft, but its modern renaissance is no hocus-pocus. Downtrodden buildings that once played a role in American history are being revived as coffee houses, cool stores, pop-up shops, galleries, and boutique hotels, resulting in a burgeoning city that brims with new-fashioned creativity and old-fashioned panache. Book a room at The Merchant (themer chantsalem.com), the eighteenth-century home of famed sea merchant Joshua Ward that has been reinvented as a design-forward, 11-room hotel, part of the growing Lark Hotels brand collection. Ponder centuries past while keeping warm in front of the main wood-burning fireplace that dates to 1784 and features an iron hearth forged by Paul Revere. Don’t forget to ask the staff about the time George Washington crashed at his fellow Freemason’s pad after the American Revolution. When exploring the city, be sure to browse the maritime and American decorative art collections at the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States, the Peabody Essex Museum (pem.org). Afterward, step outside to snap images of Patrick Dougherty’s iconic sculptural installation, Stickwork. Sample some of Salem’s many ethnic eateries and include the requisite stop at Bambolina (bambolinarestaurant.com) for artisanal neo-Neapolitan pizza baked at 925 degrees

King of the Hill Land Rover goes for minivan-like versatility with the new Discovery
By Howard Walker Land Rover’s sleeker, go-anywhere 2017 Discovery could crawl up the side of Kanchenjunga. It could plough its way through an Amazonian swamp. It could tackle a Sahara sand dune like a determined dromedary. Quite simply, it’s the world’s most luxurious, most capable minivan. Yep, a minivan—because just like those family-friendly carriages, this Discovery comes with three rows of seats that could easily fit seven stretched-out adults. To the squealing delight of every preteen (and their tech-obsessed parents), it also offers a 3G Wi-Fi hot spot that can accommodate up
to eight devices. It has nine USB ports and six 12-volt charging outlets. It’s basically a rolling Radio Shack. And like any good minivan, it comes with ample space to stow stuff. The center console can hide four iPads away from prying eyes. It’s right next to the chiller compartment for water bottles and peanut M&Ms. Getting back to seating, this latest Discovery sets a new standard for flexibility. The second row features three pews, and there are two more in the back. Each can power fold, either at the touch of a button, a tap of the touchscreen up front, or from a smartphone app. The only thing missing is a pair of power-sliding side doors—but that would be way too soccer momish. Do all these elements suggest that Rover’s replacement for the much-loved LR4 has gone soft in its tire tracks? Not a chance. Two days of challenging, downright scary, off-road driving through the Zion and Grand Canyon national parks in Utah and Arizona proved the Discovery is even more capable than its square-edged predecessor.

3/24/17 7:20 AM
This fifth-generation model has had a pretty comprehensive makeover. Instead of resembling a moving pod on wheels, it has a sleeker, rounder shape that looks a little too much like a pumped-up version of the smaller Discovery Sport. In a quest for better aerodynamics, the rear end has become a tad too tall and pinched. The tailgate is as big as a barn door. But there’s a whole mountain of substance behind this smoother style. The lightweight monocoque body structure is now 85 percent aluminum, allowing the Discovery to shed 1,000 pounds compared to the LR4. Jenny Craig is sending congratulatory notes as we speak. And the improved four-wheel drive system is simply the best and most capable available in any Land Rover or Range Rover model. Couple that with the optional (but must-have) air-suspension and there’s no wall-of-death incline, sandy river bed, or muddy ditch the Discovery can’t tackle. Most mortals will pilot this multitasking SUV on-road, where it’s just as impressive. Choose between the standard 3.0-liter, 340-horsepower, supercharged V-6 or the optional 3.0-liter, turbo-diesel V-6 packing a stumppulling 442 pound-feet of torque. Both are mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic. Both will exceed expectations. Gas or diesel-propelled, this Discovery is a joy to drive. It’s insanely
&
follow howard walker’s the wheel world blog on palmbeachillustrated.com
quiet and refined. It’s zippy, too; think zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds for the gas V-6. What’s more, its cabin now oozes luxury from every pore. The quality of the leathers and cloths, not to mention the fit, finish, and tactile beauty of the controls, made me question if I was driving a top-end Range Rover. While the base SE kicks off at $49,900, the loaded First Edition launch models are sold for a whisker under $74,000—and there are only 500 to be had. Beyond the cost, just think of this amazing Discovery as the new, official vehicle of the all-action American family. Taking the kids to summer camp is going to be so much fun. «

PAIGE BELLISSIMO
the localist
While her father, developer Mark Bellissimo, is a prominent figure in Wellington, Paige Bellissimo is forging her own path by combining a passion for horses with philanthropic diligence. In 2010, the Boston College grad founded the Great Charity Challenge, a relay-style jumping competition that has generated more than $10.7 million for 200-plus Palm Beach County charities. Additionally, Bellissimo serves on the leadership council for the foster care organization Place of Hope, volunteers at The Soup Kitchen in Boynton Beach, and is creating a young professional committee for Brooke USA. When it comes to the family business, Bellissimo has a hand in future plans for the International Polo Club as well as the Tryon Resort and International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, which she says will be like “Disney World for equestrians.” Despite sustaining an injury last year, she plans to return to the competitive show-jumping ring once she’s strong enough—but she’s already riding for fun atop her two horses, Bear and Zindora.
42
Why she chose show jumping: I love the thrill of it, and the connection with the horse is really special. What drives her passions: Giving the grants for the Great Charity Challenge. We try to visit as many of the charities we benefit as possible, and it’s amazing to see what they do with the money. Biggest charitable wish: That no child would ever go hungry. On her love for Palm Beach: I’m definitely solar-powered. I love being outside. Favorite eateries: Pizza Al Fresco and Bricktop’s Local escape: The water swings at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa Bucket list trip: New Zealand Binge watches: The People v. O.J. Simpson Recent read: Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance Guilty pleasure: I’m a chocoholic. I think I have it with every meal. Woman’s best friend: My boyfriend and I share a mini Bernedoodle named Toby. Dream dinner guest: Comedian and actress Kate McKinnon Life motto: Be the change you wish to see in the world.

JACOB JENNINGS
the dancing king Although Jacob Jennings was on track to become a professional opera singer, he decided to switch gears to pursue competitive dancing and instruction while in his freshman year at Old Dominion University in Virginia. His focus on ballroom and Latin styles led him to train under world champions in Chicago before relocating to Boca Raton, where he now resides and works as a freelance teacher, striving to help his students feel comfortable in their own skin—and while doing the Samba. In 2016, United States Dancesport ranked him the third best overall instructor, making him the top American-born teacher in the country. He channels his talents to benefit causes close to his heart, competing in Boca’s Ballroom Battle for nonprofits like the George Snow Scholarship Fund. Jennings also supports Best Foot Forward and Tri-County Animal Rescue, where he and his partner adopted their dog, Sherlock, and cat, Miss Wiggles. He’s recently embarked on a new adventure into South Florida’s luxury real estate
042_PBRISING_0517.indd 45
market as a realtor associate for Douglas Elliman and a certified home stager with his own company, UpStaged Home Design. Next goal: I’m not going to stop until I’m in Forbes magazine. Greatest misconception about real estate investment: It’s so much more than flipping houses. You don’t need a lot of money to get started—you just have to be smart about it. The perfect dance requires: Good music, a balanced relationship with your partner, and an open mind so you can let creativity flow. That’s the recipe for anything in life. Go-to happy hour spot: El Camino in Delray Beach Favorite movies: Singin’ in the Rain and Lion Local escape: The pool at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach His idea of real estate heaven: Don’t we live in it? Really, it’s wherever makes you smile that day and gives you that feeling of home and nostalgia. What he’d title his autobiography: One Step at a Time Quote that inspires him: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY 2017

You don’t need to be the busiest of all your friends to make progress.”
NICOLE KIRCHHOFF SARGENT
the water bearer
A lover of the outdoors and especially the ocean, aquaculturist Nicole Kirchhoff Sargent began considering the importance of marine baitfish species after completing her Ph.D. at the University of Tasmania and working on commercial bluefin tuna farms in Australia. Although South Florida is the largest market for live marine baitfish, no such farms existed in the area until Sargent returned home to Jupiter and founded Live Bait Advantage in 2013. Now, her facility in Stuart supplies many local bait-and-tackle shops while she continues her conservation efforts and research on seldom-studied species. Her enthusiasm for these creatures helps her to inspire the many students she tutors, mentors, and advises, and to create artistic—albeit scientific—illustrations she shares with classrooms and museums. Sargent also gives back by donating her time to the Boy Scouts of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County Fishing Foundation, and her high school alma mater, the Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. She and her husband, Nick, reside in West Palm Beach and will welcome their first child in June. Life motto: Don’t confuse busyness with actual results. Tips for taking action against coastal water pollution: Stop using fertilizers, ensure there’s no runoff coming from your yard, and clean up after your pets. Most prized possession: A notebook I carry with me that I use to write down all of my research ideas. I lost it once and nearly panicked. Dream dinner guest: Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. She was a woman in an extremely male-dominated field who fought her way through. Sometimes it feels like that same type of fight when I walk into a bait shop. It’s a hard culture to break. Noteworthy residents inside her 250-gallon salt water aquarium: Designer clown fish from a colleague’s farm in Maine and a few species native to Florida Bucket list item: Swim with the whale sharks and see the Christmas crab migration in the Indian Ocean Favorite eatery: Captain Charlie’s Reef Grill in Juno Beach Tastiest fish: Hogfish, tripletail, and snapper On her playlist: Alt-J Next goal: Finding property to expand my business. There’s a lot of demand, but space is very limited. I’d like to be able to supply all of the bait shops in the tri-county area within the next year. 46 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

EMILY PANTELIDES
the communicator
Leaving her position as morning news anchor for WPEC CBS12 is one of the biggest risks Emily Pantelides ever took. It’s also proven to be one of the most rewarding leaps of faith for the entrepreneur, who grew up in Athens, Greece before moving to the U.S. with her mom and sister. Employing her expertise and connections from more than 10 years working at news stations, she launched Pantelides PR & Consulting in 2014. Since then, she’s racked up a dossier of clients that includes the Florida Panthers, Jupiter Medical Center, the American Red Cross, Alfred Angelo, and Tri-County Animal Rescue—one of many local charities she’s involved with. Pantelides, mom to 3-year-old George and baby Alexandra as well as two rescue dogs, serves on the board of directors for Big Dog Ranch Rescue, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, and March of Dimes. Though she hasn’t looked back, Pantelides couldn’t say goodbye to TV completely; she still hosts segments for CBS12, including Food Trippin’, Spotlight on Business, and the new Extraordinary People, where she highlights those making a difference in the community.
042_PBRISING_0517.indd 49
PR wisdom: When you’re doing good PR, it doesn’t matter who you’re doing it for. Whether your client is a funeral home or an animal rescue, it’s the same principles of good coverage. Next goal: To continue providing a supportive working environment for women with kids. Recent read: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee Tastiest dish: Avocado toast with a side of smoked salmon at Table 26’s brunch Alternative career path: Ballet dancer Keeping faith: If you follow God’s will for your life, you can never go wrong. BRANDON PHILLIPS
the soul rider
When professional polo player Brandon Phillips arrived in Wellington in 1995, 120th Avenue was just a dirt road where he and his fellow riders would exercise their horses. Today, Wellington is flourishing on the global equestrian stage—and Phillips has evolved along with it. The 5-goaler plays for Postage Stamp Farm, which earned wins at the 2017 Ylvisaker Cup and will head north to the Greenwich Polo Club this summer. With 12 horses in his string and more than 20 years of pro-play experience, Phillips still loves being around the ponies and thrives off the aggressive team-sport mentality, which stems from growing up playing hockey in Canada. Yet, he touts the success of Polo for a Purpose, the annual charity exhibition game benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as his greatest achievement. Having overcome a stage-four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis at 14, Phillips sees his involvement as a way to inspire a new generation of polo fans.
Best part about giving back: It’s great helping kids who are going through things that I’ve gone through and showing them there is light at the end of the tunnel. Even if it’s just for the day for that event or if they come to ride with me, it takes their mind off everything they’re dealing with. Next goal: To raise $1 million with Polo for a Purpose next year and to keep doubling the amount each year. Horses’ names: Bono Bon, Jasmine, Honey Badger, to name a few Favorite movie: Slap Shot Dream dinner guest: Michael Jordan Tastiest dish: Strip steak at Oli’s Fashion Cuisine in Wellington Polo lesson: You’re only as good as your last game. Life motto: Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing—especially when the game is your life. Pros of being based in South Florida: The weather and the accessibility. The International Polo Club is the second biggest facility in the world when it comes to the stadium. Dream achievement: Win the U.S. Open «

arbour Island has long topped our travel bucket list. Famous for its pink sand beaches brushed with turquoise water, this quaint-meets-glam Bahamian escape is a favored backdrop for Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoots and a coveted Instagrammer’s paradise. Colorful homes, Serena & Lily–like resorts, and an India Hicks–inspired lifestyle tempt a new generation of fashion bloggers, talented designers, and in-the-know jet-setters looking to experience a picture-perfect getaway. The only way to know if a place lives up to the hype is to experience it firsthand, so we recently hopped over for 48 blissful hours. We packed our itinerary with a range of activities, from visits to local haunts to the very best in luxury relaxation. Come along as we share our guide to haute places to stay and what to eat, see, do—and wear!—on Harbour Island.

Getting There:
Nestled off the northeast of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, Harbour Island is fairly easy to get to from almost anywhere in the country. We flew out of Fort Lauderdale into North Eleuthera Airport. Then, we took a five-minute taxi ride to the dock and boarded a ferry for a brief lift straight into Harbour Island. Following a stop at the Government Dock, we picked up the golf cart we booked in advance to navigate the island during our stay—an absolute must.
Lovely Lodging: The many homes
on Dunmore Town’s harbor side are in close proximity to the island’s best restaurants and shops—and are perfect for families with small children. We rented one using vrbo.com, which has an inventory of enchanting dwellings with names like Chatterbox, Jewelbox, and Coral House, a property currently being renovated by blogger Chassity Evans of Look, Linger, Love (looklingerlovecom). We also highly recommend staying at The Dunmore (dunmorebeach.com), particularly in one of the guest cottages designed by Amanda Lindroth, who is known for blending Palm Beach glamour with island ease. There’s also the boutique Bahama House Inn (elevenexperience. com) and the eclectic Ocean View Club (ilovetheoceanview.com).
FRIDAY Island Vibe:
When we arrived, we noticed a sign that read, “Welcome to Harbour Island: Home of Friendly People.” All of the residents and staff 54

throughout the island made good on this promise, greeting us with big smiles and eagerly helping in any way possible. When we met our photographer, Paola, she gave us a warm embrace and said, “Welcome to Briland,” the locals’ endearing name for their home.
Downtime at The Dunmore: An otherwise
private resort, The Dunmore is open to the public for lunch (11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and dinner (6:30 to 9 p.m.). In addition to the cottages, Amanda Lindroth was also responsible for the decor at The Dunmore’s indoor/outdoor restaurant, where she blended historic and modern references using shiplap, seagrass, rattan, and orange-striped textiles. Hint: The corner booth is posted all over Instagram. Resort guests can also enjoy the heated swimming pool that overlooks the ocean or kick back on the sea-hued armchairs under the open-air cabana. It’s also fun to sway in the hanging swings scattered around the property.
Clockwise from top: The pool, restaurant (also opposite page, inset), and powder room at The Dunmore exude a fresh take on the British Colonial style. Opposite page: Beth, in a Grace Palm Beach swimsuit, escapes to the ocean’s edge.
Island Delicacy: After getting some sun, we
hopped on our golf cart and traveled across the island to Queen Conch. We peeked into the colorful shack to watch the chef make fresh conch salad before finding a table on

the wooden deck that rises up over the bay. This is a great spot to sit back, listen to island tunes, and soak up the ocean views.
Evening Scene: Most of the restaurants on the
island don’t open for dinner until 6:30. Put on a Lilly Pulitzer dress and go to Rock House (rockhousebahamas. com), a luxury British Colonial–style boutique hotel and restaurant overlooking the bay. We suggest sitting on the terrace to take in the sunset vistas or poolside on the back patio for a more intimate option. Regardless of the table, be sure to order the crispy “almost boneless” chicken with a frozen Goombay Smash.
SATURDAY Saddle Up: The next morning, we wanted to be
adventurous so we met at the beach in between Pink Sands and Coral Sands resorts to ride horses. While we grew up riding in Wellington, trotting along a Bahamian beach is something we’ve always wanted to do. We booked it the day before through Marty, who wears a

cowboy hat and can be seen all over the island. He met us with two chestnut brown horses named Star Boy and Tex in tow. Both were very sweet, and we bravely opted to ride without saddles, although they are available. Our nervous jitters turned to happy giggles as we rode on the powdery sand, leading Star Boy and Tex in and out of the gently lapping waves as the sun crept above the sea.

tablishment, Arthur’s Bakery specializes in baked goods like donuts, sticky buns, and breakfast sandwiches. We enjoyed chatting with owner Robert Arthur about working for Walter Cronkite in New York City many years ago. He retired to the island but is now busier than ever. Everyone comes here, even the local kids on their way to school. They’re so cute in their uniforms, and so polite! They took the time to hold the door for us and addressed us with a gracious “Yes, ma’am.”
Island Hot Spot: One wardrobe change later, we were dying to check out Sip Sip (sipsiprestaurant. com). When we saw its location directly on the Atlantic Ocean, we immediately knew why this is the place to

eat on Harbour Island. The lobster quesadilla costs $45 (gasp!) but is absolutely out of this world and worth every bite.
Shop Talk: After spending the morning beachside, we went
down to the bay for some retail therapy. We couldn’t miss Palm Beachbased Island Company’s new blue-shuttered outpost across from the Government Dock (islandcompany.com). Next door, we popped into India Hicks’ store, The Sugar Mill. Celebrated for her island lifestyle brand (and for her royal ties; she’s Prince Charles’ goddaughter), India lives on Harbour Island with her husband and children (we spotted her having breakfast at The Landing the next day). At The Sugar Mill, we found her coffee table book, India Hicks: Island Style, beautiful tassel necklaces, and a curated collection of boho clothes and shoes. Our shopping trip wouldn’t have been complete without buying straw bags emblazoned with “Briland” and “Harbour Island” from the nearby Straw Market.
Night Cap: We met a group of friends for dinner at Coral Sands
(coralsands.com) and dined on the outdoor terrace with palm trees all around and an oversized, black and white–checkered floor under our feet. Then, we moved inside to the candlelit bar and lounge area to play pool. Almost all the resorts on the island have a domestic vibe, with comfortable sofas, well-worn furniture, and personal snapshots that would be at home in any stylish living room.
SUNDAY Morning Motivation:
Given our late night out, we were ready for a pick-me-up—and Cocoa Coffee House delivered just that. Located in Dunmore Town on the second floor of one of Valentine’s Resort and Marina’s vibrant buildings (valentinesresort.com), Cocoa offers fresh fruit açai bowls and smoothies, served with a healthy dose of sunshine.
Fresh Catch:
Our husbands had requested to rent a boat so they could catch fresh fish. Luckily, they were able to charter one from

a chummy commercial spear fisherman right at Valentine’s. He guided them to the best spots around the island, and in just a few hours they were catching grouper, snapper, and lobster.
Spa and Fitness:
Before heading back to reality, we had to indulge in a little R&R at The Dunmore’s poolside pavilion. We took part in an outdoor cardio workout, followed by an alfresco massage that had us totally melting into the table. For those not staying at The Dunmore, we recommend booking a treatment with The Island Spa, whose therapists will come to you. We were bummed when our trip came to an end, but thrilled to take so many memories home with us. Harbour Island lived up to every expectation. The gracious residents, historic charm, blush-sand beaches, and electric-blue water infuse this locale with a special essence we want to experience again and again. We left with an appreciation for a more rustic version of paradise and the realization that coming home to our own island, the slice of heaven we call Palm Beach, isn’t too shabby either. « For more photos and musings from Danielle and Beth’s Bahamian journey, visit their blog, palmbeachlately.com.

Icon A5 Head up, up, and away in the seaplane that acts like a Miata The Jetsons may have promised a future of flying cars, but that just isn’t going to happen. Here’s the next best thing: the Icon A5, a carbon-fiber seaplane that costs less than a Ferrari and is probably easier (and safer) to control. Priced at around $200,000, the A5 is the brainchild of former fighter pilot Kirk Hawkins, whose company is building this two-seat sports car for the skies in Napa Valley. The A5 is classed as a no-frills Light Sport Aircraft that requires only 20 hours of training to pilot. Powered by a 100-horsepower Rotax engine spinning a rear-facing propeller, the A5 has a top speed of 138 mph and can fly for up to 450 miles on a tank of pump gas. Takeoffs and landings can be done from water or runway thanks to retracting wheels, and the wings fold back so it can be towed home on a trailer. Lunch in Bimini, anyone? (iconaircraft.com) 62

Polaris Slingshot Transformers meets Star Wars in this part-motorcycle, part-sports car There are many ways to get from point A to point B, but the craziest means might just be behind the wheel of the Polaris Slingshot. Classified as a three-wheeled motorcycle (you’ll need a motorcycle license and a fullface helmet), it packs all the thrills of a big Harley with the safety and stability of a Lotus Seven two-seater. A GM-sourced, 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter Ecotec four-banger mated to a 5-speed stick powers the single rear wheel. And no surprise here: It’s quick, lunging from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and hitting a top speed of 130 mph. With no windshield to speak of (though a small one is optional), that feels like 300 mph. Drivers sit semi-reclined, elbows seemingly inches from the blacktop. Weather protection? If it rains, head for the nearest underpass. But if you’re looking for a fun vehicle for a Sunday morning spin, the Slingshot is tough to beat. And with pricing from $22,000, it won’t break the bank. Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 2 Mr. Schwarzenegger, your Mercedes monster truck is ready Having trouble clearing those pesky speed bumps in your gated community? Boy, do we have a vehicle for you. Feast your eyes on the Mercedes-Benz G550 4x42—as in 4x4 squared. It’s the most-capable G-Class ever, which, considering the amazing capability of the standard G, is saying something. By jacking up the suspension by nearly 8 inches, this G-Squared now has 17.7 inches of ground clearance and can ford streams almost 40 inches deep. Want to be the first to drive to the top of Mount Everest? Not a problem in this beast. And it certainly has the muscle to get there, courtesy of Merc’s latest 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that packs a 416-horsepower/450 pound-foot punch. Its sticker price is almost as high as its ground clearance—a whopping $226,000. Stepladders to climb into it are sadly not included. (mercedes-benz.com)

At home in any posh setting, the Bugatti Chiron sports a two-tone exterior and an interior fitted with aluminum alloy, fine leather, and a handcrafted center console.
Singer Porsche 911 An old school favorite that drives like a modern machine For sports car aficionados, the classic Porsche 911—with its aircooled motor—ranks as the Holy Grail of driving nirvana. But they’re all getting on in years; the last air-chilled 911 came out of the factory in 1998. So what if you really want an old 911 but need it to drive like a new 911? Well, you call the crew at Singer Vehicle Design in Sun Valley, California, who, for around $500,000, will restore, revive, and painstakingly transform any 1989 to 1998 911 into a masterpiece of bespoke, handcrafted awesomeness. Every component is improved, honed, and updated with laser-like attention to detail. Founded back in 2008, Singer has thus far delivered about 50 reimagined 911s to wealthy enthusiasts around the world and has orders for another 80 in the books. Get in line now. Bugatti Chiron Everybody needs a 1,500-horsepower, $2.6-million hypercar Few experiences deliver the mind-warping sensation of rocketing from standstill to 60 mph in just under 2.5 seconds. In lieu of calling Ringling Brothers and asking them to fire you out of a circus canon, we suggest spending $2.6 million on a new Bugatti Chiron. This supercar is the long-awaited replacement for the Veyron, which ended production in 2015 after 10 years and 450 examples. Whereas the final Veyrons made do with a mere 1,200 horses, the Chiron amps up the power from its 8.0-liter quad-turbo to a staggering 1,500 horsepower. Bugatti says it has restricted the Chiron’s top speed to 261 mph, but word on the street is it should be good for 288 mph. Now that’s hyper. (bugatti.com) PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY 2017

WaterCar Panther is it a car? Is it a boat? No, it’s both. Why battle traffic driving to your favorite waterfront watering hole when you can cruise there in a car that thinks it’s a boat? Welcome to the WaterCar Panther, an amphibian roadster that’s so much fun it should come with a government warning. Built by Fountain Valley Bodyworks in California, the four-seat, $155,000 Panther can hit speeds of more than 55 mph on land and splash through the water at an equally impressive 45 mph. Power comes from a rear-mounted Honda VTEC V-6 cranking out 250 horsepower that propels either the rear wheels or a water jet. To float the boat, drive down a boat ramp or off the beach. Once in the water, pull a handle and the wheels retract into the glass-fiber body and the jet-drive engages—all in 15 seconds. (watercar.com)
Made from stainless steel and marine vinyl, the Panther’s seats can withstand all water conditions.
Garia Mansory Currus Golf Cart A hole in one to shame all other fairway rides Forget about those mini Hummer look-alikes or blinged-out Caddy Escalades. If you want to fly along the fairway, and look fly at the same time, you need a golf cart with real pizzazz. Danish golf cart maker Garia teamed up with German car customizer Mansory to create the wild Garia Mansory Currus, a carbon-fiber roadster that looks like an extra from one of the Fast and Furious films. With its menacing matte body, black-painted wheels, cut-down windshield, and leather bucket seats, this is the cart Darth Vader would drive if he swung a club instead of a light saber. Powered by a 15-horsepower, three-phase motor juiced by lithium batteries, it could hit a top speed of 37 mph if U.S. regulations didn’t restrict it to 25 mph. It can be yours for about $60,000. Seabreacher Think of it as the Ultimate Diving Machine Ever wonder what it’s like to be Flipper? Then take a ride in a Seabreacher submersible. With its dolphinshaped body and punchy 260-horsepower water jet, the California-built Seabreacher can zoom across the water at 50 mph. And here’s the cool part: It can hit 25 mph beneath the waves. Twin levers and foot pedals let you turn, twist, and perfect awesome trickery, like going vertical and doing 360-degree barrel rolls. It’s not a submarine, so you can only dive 5 to 6 feet for 5 to 10 seconds. The good news is you don’t need a license and, according to Seabreacher, anyone who has tamed a jet ski can become proficient after a day or two of practice. Driver and passenger sit tandem beneath the watertight canopy, and (thankfully) the Seabreacher is unsinkable and self-righting so lifejackets aren’t required. Prices start at around $80,000. (seabreacher.com)
Lotus Motorcycle CO-1 Evel Knievel would have loved this two-wheeled rocket ship When a Vespa scooter won’t cut it, consider the outrageous Lotus Motorcycle C0-1. Former Bugatti stylist Daniel Simon (the mastermind behind the Light Cycles in the movie Tron: Legacy) designed this limited edition, $130,000, carbon-fiber crotch rocket. German race car constructors Kodewa and Holzer Group are handling the build. Power, all 200 horses of it, comes from a 1,195cc KTM V-twin motorcycle engine mated to a 6-speed gearbox with braking by Brembo. But it’s the 12-piece, carbon-fiber aero bodywork that sets the C0-1 apart. Just 100 will be built with most already accounted for. At the Mecum classic car auction in Monterey, California, last summer, an unridden C0-1 got a high bid of $190,000. Hopefully the Lotus acronym of “Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious” won’t apply here. Martin County night owls are flocking to Ian’s Tropical Grill in Stuart for its inventive take on classic comfort dishes, like s’mores made with sriracha marshmallows and Castronovo chocolate. Owner and executive chef Eric Grutka has shown off this provocative cooking style in Max’s Harvest’s Chef vs. Chef competition, at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and on The Food Network’s Cooks vs. Cons. Grutka doesn’t offer an after-hours menu, choosing instead to allow nocturnal chow hounds to order almost any of the daily rotating dinner items for half off between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. every Thursday, and 10:00 p.m. onward on Fridays and Saturdays. Suffering from a midnight craving? Try Grutka’s famous osso buco “crack wings” or the just-caught Florida fluke sashimi served with pickled Asian parsnips, Fresno chilies, yuzu meringue, and black lava salt (pictured). Taste From biscotti and coffee to oysters and Chablis, some combinations are timelessly enjoyable. The quintessential dinner-and-a-show outing falls under that category, and several local venues successfully fuse the culinary and theatrical experience. During season, The Colony’s Royal Room Cabaret sets a dinner club precedent with intimate performances paired with a nostalgic menu that recalls the ’50s and ’60s. Tavern at The Wick Nestled inside The Wick Theatre, the Tavern at The Wick pays homage to Tavern on the Green in Central Park, an eatery famed for its opening night fêtes. Earlier this year, the theater welcomed executive chef Marc Cela, who previously cooked at Café L’Europe, Scallops saffron The Mar-a-Lago Club, and his family’s restaurant, L’Anjou. He brings a love of French continental and country fare to the Tavern, changing his dishes frequently to complement the current show. The fourcourse chef’s tasting menu offers an overview of Cela’s unabashedly classic style, with items like vichyssoise and chocolate soufflé. Following the feast, take in one of The Wick’s Broadway-style productions, including Beehive: The ’60s Musical, running through May 14. Boca Raton (561-995-2333, thewick.org)

COCKTAIL CORNER Mint Julep Salad
Even for those who don’t hail from the Bluegrass State, the Kentucky Derby is one of the year’s best excuses to throw a party. No Derby bash is complete without a Mint Julep, and Chris Marshall, owner of Hampton Forks, takes a novel approach to the classic cocktail. Marshall’s rendition incorporates a salad made from the hostess’ favorite fruits and vegetables, or whatever fresh ingredients are currently available. “The finished cocktail is layered like a parfait, with the green syrup on the bottom, salad in the middle, and the bourbon poured over crushed ice on top,” says Marshall. (631-276-1197, hamptonforks.com)
Mint Julep Salad 1/2 cup water
1 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups chopped mint 1 ripe mango 4-5 medium strawberries Juice from one lime Crushed ice 2 oz. In a blender, add simple syrup and chopped mint with two to three ice cubes and puree completely. Pour through a fine mesh strainer. Makes about 1 cup. To make the salad, dice mango and strawberries. Mix with lime juice. In a chilled rocks glass, add 1 oz. mint simple syrup, 2 tbsp. fruit salad, and crushed ice (in that order). Pour bourbon over ice. Top with more ice or club soda, if preferred. Pour Named after Nicolás Catena’s youngest daughter, the Adrianna Vineyard produces Malbec, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc.
Argentine Dream BY MARK SPIVAK
Winemakers in this South American region excel at more than Malbec Argentine wine has had success on the world stage for the past several decades. A large part of its popularity is due to Malbec, a grape variety native to the Bordeaux region where it seldom ripened properly. Transplanted to the warm climate of Argentina, the grape blossomed to create a full-bodied, ripe, and satisfying wine. Many Americans came to rely on Malbec as their go-to red, due to the reasonable price and lack of vintage variation. Even so, few connoisseurs welcomed the idea of spending $100 or more on a bottle of Argentine wine. Triple-digit price tags were traditionally reserved for Bordeaux, Burgundy, or California Cabernet. In recent years, a cluster of high-end bottlings has convinced consumers that wine from Argentina can compete with the best on the planet, and the focus has expanded beyond Malbec into white wine varieties. Bodega Catena Zapata, Adrianna Vineyard: Although Nicolás Catena planted Malbec near Mendoza when he established his winery in 1902, his descendants perfected the art of growing the grape at high altitudes. The Adrianna Vineyard is situated at nearly 5,000 feet, in a cool climate with limestone soil from an ancient riverbed. The Fortuna Terrae Malbec ($140) is a formidable offering; flavors of black raspberry, plum, and black currant sparkle on the palate, framed by supple tannins and the 82
vineyard’s signature mineral base. While Chardonnay isn’t normally associated with Argentina, Catena Zapata is changing that perception. The Adrianna Vineyard White Bones ($100) is complex and distinctive, with mouth-watering acidity and a memorable palate imprint. The same can be said for White Stones ($100), which displays richly concentrated flavors of lemon and stone fruits. Either wine might easily be mistaken for a top-flight white Burgundy. Paul Hobbs, Viña Cobos: Napa/Sonoma superstar Paul Hobbs first went to Argentina in 1989 and hatched the dream of producing great Argentine red

Susana Balbo, Dominio del Plata: Argentina’s first female winemaker to receive her enology degree in 1981, Susana Balbo established her own winery in 1999 after working as a consultant in her home country and around the world. Her signature Malbec, Nosotros ($110), comprises a selection of fruit from her finest parcels in the Uco Valley. Recently, Balbo has drawn attention for a cutting-edge white blend and an unusual barrel-aged Torrontés.
Achaval-Ferrer: In a short time since its founding in 1998, AchavalFerrer has established itself as a connoisseur’s source for Malbec. The operation has been described as a group of friends farming a collection of old vineyards, a collaboration of wine lovers from Europe and Argentina who came together to blend the styles of the Old and New Worlds. Achaval-Ferrer is highly regarded for its single-vineyard Malbec (Finca Mirador, Finca Bella Vista, and Finca Altamira, $100-$110), sourced from low-yielding vineyards that are nearly 80 years old and crafted by Santiago Achával and acclaimed Tuscan winemaker Roberto Cipresso. «

With a TWIST
Margaret Kaywell of Kaywell Interiors put a modern spin on traditional elements in this Palm Beach abode. “This [home] was designed specifically to capture and embody a fresh, youthful approach to classic styling,” Kaywell says. Whether lounging alfresco or attending an indoor dinner party, visitors will discover a welcoming retreat with contemporary allure. The dining room features Chippendale motifs and brocade fabrics realized in clean shapes and soft colors. Square lanterns from Circa Lighting illuminate a mahogany table. A silver banana leaf tray with capiz shell balls contributes to the sense of place. The pool and pavilion complement the home’s traditional lines, while minimalist furnishings nod to the contemporary aesthetic. Palm Beach (561-632-0405, kaywellinteriors.com) —Mary Murray

THE MATCHMAKER
Jaime Schwartz Waterfront Properties & Club Communities’ Hobe Sound Specialist Lots of people say they’re matchmakers. We can agree, however, there are very few successful amateur matchmakers. As with most things, doing it right usually requires a professional. Jaime Schwartz is every bit the professional matchmaker. She connects friends old and new with her old friend – Hobe Sound, Florida. Sellers and buyers in the town confirm she does indeed get it right.
“At every turn, Jaime put us at ease and added value to our transaction,” said Ilene Boorman, who recently relocated to Hobe Sound from Washington D.C. “From narrowing in immediately on the neighborhood and home we were looking for, to connecting us with a fantastic insurance agent, Jaime made everything easy for us and the seller.”
“The matchmaker tag is a great description,” Jaime says. “I know this area. I know the homes. This is a relatively small town so I’ve gotten to know the communities within the community. Market knowledge is a big factor in how I connect sellers to buyers.” This is not an oversimplification on Schwartz’s part. A 10-year real estate agent, the last and most productive two

years at Waterfront Properties and Club Communities, Jaime Schwartz is the mainland Hobe Sound waterfront and luxury real estate specialist. Jaime has already earned a reputation as an efficient taskmaster who sellers revere for her almost uncanny ability to pair the right properties with ideal buyers. “Jaime was professional, eager, and insightful throughout the process,” said seller Jeff Young. “She got us more money for our house in a quicker time than we could even imagine.” Waterfront Properties’ Managing Partner Rob Thomson counts Jaime’s enthusiastic outlook on all things Hobe Sound as one of the key factors paving the way for her success. He commented, “It starts with attitude. She’s selling an area she knows and loves. Jaime’s enthusiasm for everything about Hobe Sound is a tremendous asset to sellers because she helps buyers get excited about the community, too.”
decision was easy.” Waterfront is known to expend over a million dollars each year on vital Internet and process technology systems. “Our vast Internet presence is a big part of how we find buyers for our sellers’ homes. Just as valuable is Waterfront’s process that extends throughout the entire progression of the transaction. Being process driven, nothing is left to chance,” Schwartz said. Jaime has drawn a blueprint for success. By specializing in her community and
Jaime is a married mother of two. Her family leads an active lifestyle, boating, fishing and most recently mountain biking as members of Club Scrub at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. “I get funny looks when I tell people about mountain biking in Florida. But, it’s a great workout and you are truly ‘outside.’ It’s just another, in a long list, of this area’s hidden gems.” Asked about the keys to her fast rise, Schwartz spoke at length about the guidance and training she receives on an almost daily basis. She singled out Founding Broker Joan Thomson. “Joan knows what works. And, she shares her knowledge freely.” Schwartz also looked within. “I’m a person of my word. I’m resilient. I’m going to do the work to make good on my promises.”
“Jaime was professional, eager, and insightful throughout the process,” said seller Jeff Young. “She got us more money for our house in a quicker time than we could even imagine.”
Thomson cited Schwartz’s work ethic and proficiency with data and technology as her greatest strengths. In addition to being a significant tool for her sellers and buyers, Jaime’s penchant for research and data is what brought her to Waterfront Properties and, she says, will keep her here “until they run me out.” “I spent six months researching real estate companies before deciding on Waterfront. Once I understood the company’s model and agent resources, the
leveraging the tools at her disposal, she has created a hyper-efficient system that filters down to sellers and buyers. “It’s about time. Because I have the Waterfront marketing machine behind me, I don’t have to expend time looking for leads. Our lead generation system does that.” She concluded, “I get to spend my time promoting my sellers’ properties and helping buyers understand their authentic value.”
“Jaime has been a great addition since day one. She told us where she wants to be in this profession and she’s doing the work to get there,” Rob Thomson said. “We’re going to give her the support and tools she needs, and let her do what she does best.” Matchmaking. –by Bella Group

With the rise of squash in the collegiate community, a new generation of players is hitting the court. Professional squash player Damian Walker, a three-time national champion and instructor, is capitalizing on this renewed interest with the Palm Beach Squash Club. Located inside the developing Warehouse District in West Palm Beach, the newly founded club boasts a singles and doubles court in an upscale, industrial setting. Walker plans to cap membership at 75 people. For those who’ve never played, there are key differences between squash and other racket sports: The court is indoors; squash balls require more force to hit; and the racket is slightly smaller than a tennis racket. The quickness of the game paired with the technical and tactical aspects make it an addictive and effective workout. “From a health aspect, squash is both a cardiovascular and an aerobic activity because of those fast spurts of energy over and over,” Walker says. An hour of hard hits and lunging for the ball works the glutes, hamstrings, lower back, obliques, arms, and shoulders. “Squash is a game for life,” Walker adds. “Whether you’re 7, 25, or 65—everyone can play.” (203-253-3287)

WHAT PROBLEMS OF THE EARLOBES DO YOU CORRECT IN YOUR PRACTICE? STRETCHED EARLOBE HOLES - often the result of wearing heavy earrings. A 15-30 min procedure resolves this problem. “PIXIE” EAR DEFORMITY - the earlobes are stretched following a previous facelift procedure. Correction restores their natural shape and volume. GAUGED EARLOBES - the earlobes are extremely stretched due to the so-called “gauging”. Before correcting this, the gauges should be off for at least 3 months. LOSS OF VOLUME - Filler injection or minor surgery can restore their youthful appearance. All procedures are performed under local anesthesia, with rapid recovery and predictable pleasing results.

The Journey, Amelia Costa
Word
Play
Words can have serious ramifications. In fact, a single word can trigger the brain to release neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin that fuel our emotions and cause us to feel everything from ecstasy to despair. In “Mark My Words,” a mixed media exhibition on display at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County through May 27, visitors can observe the powerful effect of words within the artistic narrative. The collection features photography, sculpture, illustration, and other works by 15 local artisans including: Joel Cohen’s arresting photograph, American Flag; Amelia Costa’s sculptural and poetic piece, The Journey; Raymond Neubert’s vibrant ink on wood, Beauty, which challenges the value of feminine clichés; and Dana Donaty’s Champagne Dreams, peppered with witty phrases plucked from podcasts and e-books. Why does Donaty feature words in her work? “People look passively at art,” she says. “Words slow them down. There’s a whole world to be seen if you just take the time to look.” Lake Worth (561-4712901, palmbeachculture.com)

The Mating Game in “Amazing Butterflies”
In Franz Kafka’s seminal work, The Metamorphosis, a luckless salesman gets a taste of the bug’s life when he becomes one. In South Florida Science Center and Aquarium’s new interactive exhibit, “Amazing Butterflies,” on display May 6 to September 29, pint-sized entomologists can look inside the wondrous world of lepidopterans and experience the larval journey from the cocoon to the chrysalis. Along the way, guests will navigate through a maze of didactic activities, like walking in caterpillar “legs,” sitting inside a giant pupa pod, and descending down a butterfly zip line. Matthew Chevallard
When Matthew Chevallard couldn’t find affordable, customized, velvet smoking slippers, he did the next best thing and created his own. In 2005, the footwear entrepreneur launched a line of luxurious slipper-shoes, named Del Toro after the Torino football fans of his native Italy. Women’s and children’s shoe collections followed, as well as strategic collaborations with the Walt Disney Company, Mexican-American artist Eduardo Sarabia, and Italian sneaker manufacturer Superga. His classic slippers and sneakers have garnered a loyal fan base of celebrities like basketball star LeBron James and fashion influencer Olivia Palermo. Local shoppers can snag some Del Toros at Grace Boutique on the island and Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton. When not designing, Chevallard, a Miami Beach resident, enjoys playing with his three dogs and spending weekends at his mother’s Palm Beach home. —Kerry Shorr
