From the Editor

We all know to savor the moment, but in the frenetic pace of our society, it isn’t always possible. I’ll admit to rushing from one gala to the next, or double-booking cocktail parties, just to fit it all in—and I’ll bet I’m not the only one. In that flurry of activity, it’s easy to forget to notice the nuances of the social circuit: the beautifully crafted centerpieces, the epic taste of that chocolate dessert, the ovation-worthy speech of an award recipient, and even who wore what. This is why every June we present a comprehensive look back at the season. This fun yearbook, compiled after reviewing thousands of photos, has become one of our most popular issues, and it’s no secret why. Who doesn’t enjoy reliving those moments—the laughter, the dancing, the dazzling decor, the celebrity appearances—that made the past season so remarkable? Our special package is an edited presentation of the most impactful images, captured by our talented social photographers, of 201617. With everything from big anniversaries to presidential visits, this season has been nothing if not interesting. The photos tell that story best, so turn to page 46 and enjoy the trip down memory lane. This year, I’m excited to unveil a new tradition: PBI’s Best Dressed award, to be presented every June to the individual who, in our opinion, wore it best during the season. In a town full of fashion statements, it was hard to single out one. We asked a small (and anonymous) stable of fashion influencers and tastemakers to nominate their choices, and we chose the top candidate for a glamorous photo shoot. As our cover reveals, this year’s award goes to Raysa Fanjul. Raysa’s style has long been elegant and timeless, but in recent years we’ve watched it evolve into a confident, even fearless, signature. We are intrigued by her mix of serious and fun, classic and edgy. We are obsessed with her exuberant use of color. And we love that she finds such joy in fashionable self-expression. Read all about her style, and see the images shot by fashion photographer Navid, on page 40. Whether you’re reading this in the comfort of your living room or on some fabulous beach, enjoy the look back. We certainly have.

It’s been a long day, and there’s still more excitement to come. Swing home and pack a quick bite for a relaxing picnic on Palm Beach, or opt for a gourmet alternative with to-go delicacies from C’est Si Bon (open until 6 p.m.), also on the island. Sink your toes into the sand on the beach or spread out a blanket by the giant kapok tree nestled just off the Lake Trail. Both spots are kid-approved. (561-659-6503, csbgourmet.com)

Northwood Village is dotted with doors no larger than a cellphone thanks to artist Nickie Hennevelt. Inspired by similar projects in cities like Atlanta, Hennevelt installed her first tiny door in 2015 as a way to engage area creators, businesses, residents, and visitors. Today, more than 20 individually designed doors are scattered throughout Northwood and downtown West Palm. On June 30, join Hennevelt for a tiny door hunt at Northwood’s monthly Art Night Out. For even more unexpected art, take a dive to a submerged museum. The Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management department oversees a plethora of artificial reefs, many of which boast beautiful statues. Explore the shores of Ocean Reef Park on Singer Island and say hi to Andrea the Mermaid, designed by Tom McDonald in honor of a local three-time breast cancer survivor. McDonald is also responsible for the shark sculptures nestled on the west side of the Phil Foster Snorkel Trail in Riviera Beach. (561233-2400, discover.pbcgov.org/erm)

WALKS OF LIFE In March, the City of West Palm Beach Art in Public Places program brought art from the walls to the streets when it installed a new mural, entitled Walks of Life, at the intersection of Fern Street and Tamarind Avenue. Designed by visual arts students from Dreyfoos School of the Arts, this technicolor masterpiece aims to slow down traffic and make the area safer for pedestrians. It was created using paint tested for street durability and is expected to enliven the asphalt for up to three years. (561-822-1521, wpb.org)

Erin Manning, executive director of the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, begins many mornings taking in Whitehall through the lens of a visitor. She delights in the views from the south portico: the ancient coconut groves, the undulating water that separates the island from downtown West Palm Beach, and the pavilion reminiscent of Gilded Age railway palaces. She feels connected with Henry Flagler as she moves into the library where he spent much of his time, and continues her own education upstairs alongside museum-goers in the Flagler-Kenan History Room. “Seeing this place wake up every day is such an exciting thing,” says Manning. “[The Flaglers] would invite people to be in the music room [or] the drawing room, and to have incredible meals and experiences, and we’re still able to do that. Hopefully, we will be forever.” On June 5, visitors can roam Whitehall free of charge as part of Founder’s Day, an annual remembrance of the museum’s founding in 1959. For Manning, the event represents her mission to welcome as

&

many people as possible into the remarkable environment Flagler once called home. Manning has spent her entire career in museums, most recently as the executive director of the Historical Society of Princeton. Since starting at the Flagler in February 2016, she’s embraced her focus on the Gilded Age and Flagler in particular. She’s now looking for ways to incorporate Flagler’s best qualities—his entrepreneurialism and charitability—into the museum’s present and future. In terms of philanthropy, Manning has introduced a program entitled Flagler’s Spirit, with the goal of opening up the museum to individuals who might never have the chance to visit. In November, the Flagler hosted a Thanksgiving dinner in its Grand Ballroom for foster children from KidSanctuary Campus. Next, Manning is planning on-site picnics in conjunction with Feeding South Florida. Manning hopes to devote similar efforts to fostering entrepreneurs who share Flagler’s drive and creativity. She’d love to see the museum become a hub for innovation, whether that be hosting conferences or being a home base for think tanks. “There are opportunities down the road for us to welcome people who have ideas and collaborate with them,” she says. “How great would it be for innovators of the world to convene here?” After all, as Manning notes, that’s what the Flagler is all about. (561-6552833, flaglermuseum.us)

Escape HIGH LIFE

A new private villa enclave—and the bespoke services that come with it—emerges on Providenciales’ windswept North Shore

Escape

Beach Enclave North Shore villas sit 65 feet above the coast. Villas have pocketing doors for indoor/ outdoor living‚ four or five bedrooms‚ and private pools‚ and are attended by a butler.

For the past decade, the stock of Providenciales has been rising. The Turks and Caicos’ most populous—and most popular—island has become home to ultra-chic resorts by some of the biggest names in the hospitality industry, Aman and Gansevoort among them. Yet not every luxury accommodation on Provo has a splashy brand behind it. The newest, and arguably the most compelling, offering is brought to you by Beach Enclave, a name you might not have heard—but will. What sets this property apart is, for starters, its location on Provo’s secluded North Shore. Perched on a coral stone outcropping

34

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

65 feet above the coastline, Beach Enclave villas are elevated in more ways than one. They guarantee sweeping views and privacy, as the North Shore is sparsely developed, and resemble residential masterpieces rather than traditional hotel rooms. The nine villas have four- and five-bedroom plans in addition to wide-open living spaces inside and out. Lofty ceilings, spare modern decor, and organic finishes rendered in a sun-bleached palette inspire a sense of serenity, an ability to exhale. This induces a desire to throw open the glass doors and step onto broad wood-plank decks, take a dip in the pri-

vate pool, or follow a path of stone steps down to a solitary beach. The water is so inviting, it’s hard not to explore aquatic pursuits. They’re plentiful here. Fishing, from reef to deep sea, yields wahoo, tuna, mahi-mahi, and bonefish. Since the world’s third-largest barrier reef is located in the Turks and Caicos, the snorkeling and diving are stellar. The Princess Alexandra National Park (visittci.com), with its abundant coral and marine life, lies just offshore the resort. It’s tempting to stay out there, in the delicious sunshine and ultramarine ocean, until the deepening sky signals time for a sundowner. That’s the magic hour in the Turks and Caicos, and at Beach Enclave North Shore, the enchantment is ratcheted up a notch by a private butler who sees to your every whim, including mixing up coconut mojitos as you recline on a suspended daybed. Cocktails lead to dinner by a personal chef who’s colonized the kitchen to prepare delights like snapper, lobster, or conch caught in the local waters, crab cakes, pigeon peas and rice, the freshest salads, and dreamy desserts with

an island twist. It’s a feast every night, should you choose to dine in. Restaurants around Provo are worth sampling too, particularly Da Conch Shack (daconchshack.com), which is famous more for its toes-in-the-sand vibe and the kick of its rum punch (“Fuzzy Happy Feeling: Free,” the menu promises) than for its culinary prowess. The conch, served curried, frittered, cracked, and stewed, is by far the best thing to order. By day, you can even watch the conch divers come out of the water with their catch. It doesn’t get fresher than that. Whether dining alfresco at the villa or out on the town, the best postprandial activity is a walk on the beach by starlight, followed by conversation by the poolside fire pit. Everything, from the whistle of the breeze through palm fronds to the softly illuminated surf below, conspires to convince you this is your own private paradise. And for a few days, it is. (beachenclave.com) «

BEYOND THE SHORE Beach Enclave North Shore is the first in a series of villa communities presented by the developer. Beach Enclave Long Bay, with five residential villas on a hyper-exclusive beach, will debut late this year. In 2018, BE will arrive in Grace Bay, Provo’s most popular beach. All Beach Enclave villas are privately owned but serviced and operated like a resort. Generous dining rooms (top left and below) allow for in-villa dining and entertaining. A fitness center (left) provides wellness options, and water sports abound.

The Break of Dawn Drop the top in ultimate style and luxury with the exquisite new four-seat Rolls-Royce Dawn By Howard Walker As I’m gliding along in Rolls-Royce’s new Dawn drophead—Florida sunshine illuminating my face, wind whipping across my earlobes— the buttery vocals of Canadian crooner Michael Bublé start playing in my head. Scary, I know. But this particular Bublé megahit so perfectly captures the thrill of driving this $340,000 rolling masterpiece that it could be its official anthem. So, let your hair down and sing along with me: “It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life. And I’m feeling good.” I’m definitely feeling rather good right now. No one is piloting a Dawn for mere transportation, daily rush hour commutes, or runs to Publix. This is a high-days-and-holidays kind of a car. It’s the ideal mode of transportation when shopping along Worth Avenue or ferrying friends to lunch at The Breakers. And what a truly spectacular way to travel. Gently toggle a switch and the Dawn’s massive six-layer-thick cloth top performs a whisperquiet ballet of unlatching and motoring majestically rearward in just 22 seconds. There’s no need to pull over, either; this dance can be done while purring along at up to 31 mph—a necessary feature when you feel the urge to lower the roof at a red light that instantly turns green. PBI ’s BEST DRESSED 2017

RAYSA

FAN JUL BY LIZ PETONIAK PHOTOGRAPHY BY NAVID

Confident fashion choices, a keen eye for mixing classic with edgy, and a penchant for fun define Raysa Fanjul’s impeccable style. She talks to PBI about dressing the part—and owning it.

or a recent birthday fête, Raysa Fanjul wore a vibrant hot-pink-and-orangestriped gown with a high-low hem by London-based designer Emilia Wickstead. In the not-so-distant past, she might have gravitated to a chic LBD or other classic look. But by her own admission, her style has evolved beyond archetypal or safe fashion choices. Her new signature is fresh, unexpected, and unapologetically her own. “My fashion sense has always been on the classier side,” she says with a sly smile. “I haven’t been trendy. For example, I wore Ralph Lauren all the time. Beautiful yet classy. But as I’m getting older, I’m becoming a little edgier.” The birthday dress, she recalls, “had pockets, which I absolutely adore. It was flowy, airy, and made me feel so comfortable. I could dance all night.” “Comfort” could refer to physical ease, or to feeling good in one’s own skin. In this case, it’s both. And it was evident the night of the party, when Raysa was as radiant as the sparklers atop her cake. Longtime friend Annie Falk recalls the evening— and the statement. “Guests were all wearing white and Raysa was floating around the room, the dress flowing, leaving a wake of color everywhere she went,” she says. “It was quite a show stopper.” Indeed, Raysa has become skilled at playing with proportions, silhouettes, and color combinations, and interpreting her own mix of formal and casual looks. In the process, she’s liberated herself from convention and found her edge, forging an iconic— and very personal—sense of style.

FASHION PHILOSOPHY Amid the glitz and glam of Palm Beach, Raysa describes her personal style in one word: simple. “Less is more for me,” she says. “Comfort is very important. I like to feel like myself at all times through the clothes I wear. From that stems confidence.” She cites The Row, Naeem Khan, Emilia Wickstead, and Valentino as her favorite names to wear. Her choices (take an ankle-grazing, hibiscus-print shirt dress from Saint Laurent paired with the house’s star-emblazoned white leather sneakers, for example) reflect an elegant but playful simplicity. Raysa is graceful, down-to-earth, and never overadorned. By day, that translates to sneakers, skinny jeans, a big sweater or an A-line blouse, and fun sunglasses. By night, she exhibits a more experimental side but always employs an editing eye.

often wear color to black-tie events, but the tone of red was unlike any other.” She kept the accessories simple: minimalistic earrings and a silver Edie Parker clutch. The dress spoke for itself, and for Raysa, too. It loudly announced her as a woman having a blast with fashion. “The way she accessorizes and puts it all together is incredibly chic,” says Falk. “She always looks elegant, in an effortless way.”

Opal blue dye top ($451), Makensie blue dye pants ($436), Alexis, shop-alexis.com

For inspiration, she looks to effortlessly chic icons like Audrey Hepburn and Victoria Beckham. “Audrey’s the classy element. Victoria’s got that edge. She just rocks everything.” Raysa’s most personal muse? “My daughter Raissa. She has a fabulous element of style.” ON THE SCENE A prominent philanthropist, Raysa works with Catholic Charities, Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, and St. Jude, and also sits on the board of Mission International Rescue Charities and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. With so many endeavors and a giving spirit, Raysa has many opportunities to 44 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

bring her fashion A-game to galas and other functions. No matter the occasion, she arrives in head-turning feminine frocks that bridge timeless and current qualities. “This is a town of entertainment,” she says. “There are a lot of causes and galas. I support and love them all, and I will always try to look my best when I’m there.” One shining moment this season took place at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s fire-and-ice-themed Winter Ball, where Raysa donned a flirty tulle Naeem Khan gown. “The dress was tailored and wrapped in blush pink and red embroidered flowers,” she says. “I felt extra special that evening. I don’t

SHOE FETISH A peek into Raysa’s closet reveals her true obsession: shoes. From floor to ceiling, an entire wall is devoted to footwear. And though she doesn’t discriminate among stilettos, flats, and sneakers, each pair is more fabulous than the last. “Shoes for me are it,” she says. “They’re my favorite part of an outfit.” There are perfectly arranged Christian Louboutin pumps; shiny, metallic Jimmy Choo sandals for evening; her staple scalloped Chloé flats, which lend a dash of femininity and are easy to wear all day; and a spectacular pair of Christian Dior black satin sandals with a gold heel and a crystal buckle. “They’re more of a work of art than a shoe,” she says. There’s a shoe for every mood and for all of her travels, she says. “If I’m here in Palm Beach, I will wear black, closed-toe Valentino flats with an ankle strap. They’re blinged out to the max. If I go to Miami, I will take my red pom-pom Aquazzura stilettos. In the Hamptons, I’ll go with my grey Supergas, which I live in. I’ve become a sneaker junkie lately.” ALL IN THE FAMILY Among the color-coded racks in Raysa’s closet lie family heirlooms (her mother’s watch and miniature mother-of-pearl bible) as well as framed photos of her with her husband, sugar giant Alfonso Fanjul, and her daughter, Raissa Herrera. Raissa, a stylist who also works for the popular contemporary line Alexis, frequently shares new brands with her mom and recommends pieces to add to her wardrobe. “She’s instilling me with these fun, edgy elements; I learn so much from her,” Raysa says. “But, whatever I’m wearing, I always try to own it. If you stay true to yourself, that will always shine through.” «

Dinner with Friends

Alex, Camilo, and Felipe Celis are channeling their love of food into flavorful community events. In August 2015, the brothers opened Celis Produce on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, stocking the shop with organic fruits and vegetables from national, regional, and area farms like Loxahatchee’s Gratitude Garden and Kai Kai in Indiantown. Then, in May 2016, they launched a bi-monthly dinner party series dubbed Supper with Celis. Hosted at intimate venues, these culinary get-togethers include a pre-meal mixer, a three-course dinner, and wine pairings. The next supper will take place June 7 at Kitchen in West Palm Beach, where executive chef Matthew Byrne will cook up seasonal ingredients from the Celis market. Space is limited, and ticket proceeds will benefit a local charity. (561-410-5735, celis-produce.com/supper-with-celis) —Kerry Shorr

Chef Christian Quiñones (below) invites guests to experience the cuisine of his native Puerto Rico at Latin pop-up dinners, held in the Bistro Ten Zero One garden at the West Palm Beach Marriott. The next meal is scheduled for June 22.

COCKTAIL CORNER

In 1508, Ponce de León settled in Puerto Rico and introduced Spanish cuisine to the Taínos Indians, whose diet consisted mainly of fruits, vegetables, and fresh fish. Today, the island’s cocina criolla, or Creole cooking, is suffused with complex global flavors drawn from many countries, including West Africa and the United States. For a true taste of the Caribbean, head to Bistro Ten Zero One at the West Palm Beach Marriott. On June 22, Puerto Rican–born executive chef Christian Quiñones will host a pop-up dinner in the herb garden, where guests can sample savory dishes like lump crab cake on yucca salad (pictured) as well as garlic shrimp mofongo, an African-inspired recipe made with mashed green plantains, olive oil, garlic, and crunchy pork skin. Admission costs $10 and covers a cocktail, an amuse bouche, and live musical entertainment. (561833-1234, bistro1001.com) —K.S. 66

When chef Laurent Godbout and his wife, Veronique, established a branch of their Montreal restaurant in Palm Beach, they fused their northern sensibilities with tropical flavors. At Chez L’Épicier, the couple highlights maple syrup in dishes ranging from a foie gras and ham appetizer to a maple pudding cake. Syrup has also found its way into the cocktails with the Maple Crème de la Crème, a mix of Crown Royal and passionfruit puree topped with maple foam. Even though the tapping of maple trees is associated with Canadian winter, this particular libation spans all seasons. “The cocktail works in spring and summer because it’s not heavy,” says general manager Alex Finley. “The bright acidity of the passionfruit really shines through, and both the whiskey and the pepper provide a contrast with the maple syrup’s sweetness.” (561508-7030, chezlepicier.com/palmbeach)

Potable vinegars, including McClary Bros. (above), are flooding the market.

Sweet and Sour The next ‘it’ elixir, vinegar, is booming in popularity across the country

BY MARK SPIVAK

Vinegar is officially trending. Like many other superfood fads, its health benefits (including a potential positive effect on blood sugar levels) are widely touted. The idea is far from new. In the Colonial era, vinegar-based syrup was combined with spirits, water, or soda to make a concoction called a shrub. The libation was a variation on punch, with the vinegar extending past its shelf life. Shrubs have made a roaring comeback in the current cocktail culture explosion: Bartenders love them because they’re easy to make and result in a drink that’s tangy, vivacious, and refreshing. Currently, it’s difficult to find a serious bar in a major city that doesn’t offer one. 72

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Beyond the craft cocktail world, potable vinegars are enjoying wide commercial success, too. Detroit-based McClary Bros. showcased its products on a 2015 episode of Shark Tank. The company based part of its marketing strategy on the intention to sell to chain restaurants, indicating just how widespread the practice of drinking vinegar has become. McClary Bros. didn’t get a deal from the sharks, but it did experience a significant bump in sales following the program. Some of its most popular flavors include Lemon & Ginger, Pineapple & Fennel Seed, and Michigan Apple Pie. Chef Andy Ricker, proprietor of the Portland-based Pok Pok restaurants, has been

serving drinking vinegars for more than a decade. After finding them in an Asian market, he reportedly realized the combination of flavors perfectly complemented his Thai dishes. He now sells nine signature flavors (plus seasonal varieties) under the label of Pok Pok Som, all made with fresh fruits, herbs, spices, and organic sugarcane vinegar. On the other end of the scale, Wal-Mart has been selling a line of fruit vinegars made by the French company A L’Olivier, which has been making oils and vinegars since 1822. If companies such as McClary’s, Pok Pok Som, and A L’Oliver are the couture of drinkable vinegar, then old-fashioned apple cider vinegar is the ready-to-wear. Nutritionists generally recommend adding one or two tablespoons to a large glass of water and drinking it after meals; avoid consuming it straight, as the acidity will cause throat irritation and damage tooth enamel. The vinegar is anti-glycemic and supposedly helps break down starches while aiding digestion. Look for the cloudy, unfiltered type, such as the widely available Bragg organic apple cider vinegar. It may be one of the fashions of the moment, but is drinking vinegar really good for you? Many experts seem to think so. stimulate genes that are responsible for breaking down fat. Virtually all vinegars have the same potential health benefits, but balsamic and red wine vinegar deserve special mention. Both are derived from grapes, which are rich in nutrients and polyphenols. Resveratrol, in particular, has garnered huge amounts of publicity as the ingredient that gives wine its cholesterol-fighting ability. Then, too, there are the sensory benefits of aged balsamic vinegar: A teaspoon or two drizzled over pasta, roasted meats, or fresh fruit may or may not lower blood pressure, but its magnificent taste does make the world seem like a better place. «

SHAPE SHIFTER Krista Watterworth Alterman of Krista Watterworth Design Studio employed circular pieces and creative problem solving in this Deerfield Beach bungalow. “Using round elements where there are a lot of angular and straight lines gives life to a space and creates balance,” Watterworth says. “The homeowners wanted a sleek, midcentury modern look but presented a unique challenge as the husband is quite tall and wanted pieces that would be comfortable for him. Luckily, Eames had just come out with a larger version of its iconic chair, [which] fit perfectly in the space. [Also,] the wife is originally from Texas and wanted some rustic elements in the home. Rustic does not usually go with midcentury modern, but the round teak balls work well here and add the organic vibe [she] wanted.” Palm Beach Gardens (561530-3983, kristawatterworth.com)

It’s one thing to sell high-end properties. It’s another to successfully champion their authentic value. Laurie Nugent does both. Waterfront Properties & Club Communities’ specialist at PGA National Resort and Spa, home of the Honda Classic, Laurie is acknowledged as the go-to expert for properties in the upscale golf community. With 196 PGA sales since 2010, Laurie continues to sell properties at the highest prices in PGA National, setting records in a number of the communities. “Sticking to what I know has served my clients well,” Laurie says. “Having focused exclusively on PGA National properties for more than 17 years, I am intimately familiar with all aspects of real estate and life at the resort.”

staff, a pervasive lead capture website, international brand recognition, and the marketing guidance of Founding Broker Joan Thomson, Laurie is free to focus her time and energy on selling. For Laurie’s sellers, this means a smooth process from start to finish. “Selling our home with Laurie was completely hassle free,” said PGA resident Dr. Steven Ressler. “She was actively engaged, interested, upbeat and available to us at a moment’s notice. The listing price she chose was spot on. Our closing went flawlessly on a Wednesday, and the next day Laurie had time to show us condos. We found one on Friday, made an offer on Saturday, and by Sunday our offer was accepted. All of this happened seamlessly because of Laurie’s knowledge and expertise. She has hands of gold. Laurie is everything you could want in a real estate agent.”

Laurie’s intuitive grasp on property locations, the community “One of the reasons sellers and buyers choose to work with me culture, the residents’ personalities, and all amenities – including is because I’m available to them,” the private members’ club, resort, Laurie says. “From beginning to and spa—makes her an indispenend, they know I can be extremesible resource to sellers, buyers “Having focused exclusively ly hands on with showings and and other professionals involved on PGA National properties communication because of the at key points in the transaction. support I have back at the office.” for more than 17 years, I am “Appraisers, inspectors, realtors intimately familiar with all It’s this support that drew Laurie and investors often turn to me to Waterfront in 1999 and keeps for insight into the market’s and aspects of real estate and her around all these years later. particular residences’ authentic life at the resort.” “Rob and Joan are geniuses,” she value,” she says. “I have history says. “I became successful by folhere, right down to being able to lowing their system and doing evname the houses that have been erything the Waterfront way. Take

Dreams of flying are common, but it’s rare to experience the sensation in real life. With the assistance of silk hammocks hung from the ceiling, aerial yoga grants that same feeling of freedom. Practitioners of aerial yoga perform traditional poses while completely suspended, making it more challenging to stay upright, thereby working deep core and micro-muscles that often go unused. Gravity also affects the body, providing effortless spinal decompression and improved circulation. “When you allow aerial yoga’s zero-compression inversions to change the flow of movement, there’s nothing left to do but open up,” says Lisa Midlarksy, owner of Defy Gravity Yoga. “Many of us are often in a constant state of contraction; by lengthening our bodies we can realign the spine and give space in areas that may place pressure on a sciatic nerve.” At her Boca Raton studio, she offers a variety of aerial classes, including a beginner introductory course and a “playtime” for perfecting tricks. Classes follow a yoga flow structure of moving through flexibility, strength, inversion, and floor work. No prior yoga experience is required. Midlarsky says, “Aerial yoga is ideal for anyone with an open mind.” (561-866-6001, defygravityyoga.com)

Hydration Nation Once reserved for hospital stays and professional athletes, intravenous hydration drips are making their way into the mainstream. The trend, which recently appeared as a story line on Showtime’s Billions, reflects the demand for those seeking an edge on everything from improving performance in the workplace, to boosting the immune system, to recovering from a hangover. Locally, these services are available at RevitalIV, founded by Dr. Matteo Rosselli, director of inpatient anesthesiology at Jupiter Medical Center. The IV hydration wellness center aims to remedy ailments tied to acute dehydration (such as stress, jet lag, and migraines) by administering a specially formulated blend of fluids, vitamins, minerals, and supplements. During the appointment, a registered nurse or physician sorts through symptoms to determine the appropriate treatment, as well as add-ons like B12 shots or an injection of the powerful antioxidant glutathione. The IV is safely set up in a private room and dispensed while the client reclines in a lounge chair. The process takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the effects of feeling energized and refreshed begin immediately. Prices start at $99 for the basic hydration treatment. WHAT TYPE OF LINES AND WRINKLES DO YOU TREAT IN YOUR PRACTICE?

Watching local competitive weightlifter Laura Eiman clean and jerk a 75-pound weight over her head, it’s hard to believe that before age 60 she’d never touched a barbell. That all changed when Eiman, a lifelong cardio athlete and entrepreneur, resolved to change her life by becoming stronger. After relocating to Florida, she joined CrossFit 1401 in West Palm Beach and enrolled in an Olympic weightlifting class. With the guidance of coach Nadia Frye of the West Palm Barbell Club, Eiman placed fourth in the country in masters weightlifting just eight months after her first competition. Today, she affectionately calls the barbell her best friend and is determined to help fellow baby boomers become the best versions of themselves. PBI spoke with Eiman, who’ll compete in the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic this month, about the benefits of strength training and making healthy living a priority at any age. (lauraeiman.com)

Elastic Creases - These involve most frequently the cheeks, the upper lip and the base of the neck. Sun exposure and smoking may make this type of wrinkle worse. Don’t smoke, minimize sun exposure and use sunscreen to prevent this kind of wrinkling. Dynamic Expression Lines - Wrinkles that are caused by facial muscle movement. Commonly referred to as frown (or smile) lines and “crow`s feet”. These wrinkles respond best to Botox in the upper face and fillers in the lower face. Gravitational Folds - Due to the effects of gravity, they become increasingly obvious as skin begins to fold and sag. The location of these wrinkles is related to the thickness of the skin. Our research shows that thicker skin and good facial volume may prevent the formation of gravitational folds. Cosmetic surgery procedures are the most effective remedy for this kind of lines. My best skin-saving advice is to minimize sun exposure, wear sunscreen and not to smoke. Moisturizers can help temporarily “fill in” and plump wrinkles but if you are looking for more permanent results you may want to consider a cosmetic surgery procedure.

LEARN EIMAN’S TIPS FOR LIFTING WEIGHTS SAFELY AT PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED. COM/LAURAEIMAN.

PBI: What did CrossFit and training for weightlifting competitions do for you physically and mentally? Eiman: We all know endorphins can help you out of a tough day. But, [strength training has] given me tremendous confidence. My body is stronger than it’s ever been now at age 63. It’s never too late to become stronger through strength training, [which] can be lifting two soups cans in a physical therapist’s office recovering from a shoulder injury. It doesn’t [have to] mean lifting a 100-pound barbell over your head. What misconceptions about strength training should we be aware of? A lot of my fellow baby boomers feel discouraged. They say, “I have too many injuries, I can’t strength train.” But, strength training can reverse injuries, protect against injuries, and help you regain a quality of life you never thought possible. And you don’t have to lift heavy weights. A U.S. Marine can get an amazing workout just using his or her own body weight. What insights have you gained from your journey? That anybody can do this stuff. You can do whatever you want. Do you want to walk the dog around the block without getting winded? Do you want to do a triathlon? I hope I can inspire people to put their limitations aside, get their doctor’s approval, and start on a great program of their choice.

OAK MEDIA

Atrophic Rhytids - They are fine lines on the face that are almost perpendicular to each other and tend to disappear when skin is stretched. These wrinkles are associated with loss of collagen and elasticity. They can be prevented by using sunscreen. Microneedling, moisturizers, fillers are good treatments for this problem.

Water lily

Agenda

Wonderland

The Elegant Water Lotus, David Zeller

Tickled Pink, Shelley Stang

The ancient Egyptians believed water lilies symbolized rebirth and possessed therapeutic properties. Today, these fragrant freshwater botanicals help detoxify Florida’s shallow-water habitats and provide shelter for aquatic wildlife. On June 17, floral enthusiasts can observe them up close at McKee Botanical Garden’s thirteenth annual Waterlily Celebration. Home to one of the largest outdoor water lily collections in the United States, the 18-acre garden boasts nearly 500 blooming plants and more than 100 varietals, such as Indian Goddess, Plum Crazy, Ultra Violet, Wanvisa, and Chaz. Arrive early for a self-guided tour and the chance to spot one of the night-blooming varieties that open between dusk and mid-morning. Other activities include repotting demonstrations, a plant sale, and the water lily photo contest on display in the Hall of Giants. Guests at the celebration, which lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., can vote for the People’s Choice Award, with winners chosen from adult and youth divisions. Architect Frank Gehry once quipped, “You can look anywhere and find inspiration.” For his visually arresting Toys Are Us series, ceramicist and Stetson University art professor Dan Gunderson finds afflatus in children’s toys. Drawing from his seismic collection of garage sale novelties and vintage bric-a-brac, Gunderson assembles vibrant, figurative patterns and then photographs them from overhead. His one-man exhibition, “Dan Gunderson: A View From Above,” on display June 17 to September 3 at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, showcases more than 30 digital works including Carney, made using plastic insects, Disney characters, and super hero figurines. FUNNY GUY

Before succeeding Jon Stewart as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in September 2015, Trevor Noah worked as a radio DJ, a game show host, and a stand-up comedian. Born to mixed-race parents during South Africa’s apartheid years, Noah used his knack for linguistics (he speaks numerous languages, including Xhosa and German) to earn acceptance from his peers and to distract from his light-colored skin. Today, he employs his softspoken wit to muse on prickly topics ranging from health care to President Trump’s Twitter feed. On June 3, Noah will head to the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach to share personal, often hilarious stories that explore subjects like coming to America, working for the satirical news show, and having a name with no meaning. The ranking of America’s Top Women Wealth Advisors, developed by Forbes’ partner SHOOK Research, is based on a ranking algorithm that includes telephone and in-person interviews, client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations, and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC, which does not receive compensation from the advisors or their firms in exchange for placement on a ranking. Irene Lummertz

LILA PHOTO

Brazilian jeweler Irene Lummertz has bijoux in her blood. Her fascination for rare stones stems from accompanying her gemologist father to Paraiba’s colorful mines. In 2005, she traded Washington, D.C.’s West End for the tropical splendor of Palm Beach and began selling her jewelry collection at local boutiques like Mary Mahoney. She opened her first storefront off Worth Avenue three years later, and relocated to the island’s swanky Esplanade mall last December. Today, she travels to Brazil often to source raw gems like amethyst and tourmaline and to visit with the artisans who turn her bespoke creations into 18-karat gold-set masterpieces. When she’s not traveling, Lummertz enjoys spending time with her husband and son at their homes in Palm Beach and Washington, D.C. —Kerry Shorr FAVORITE FASHION DESIGNER Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel CURRENTLY LISTENING TO Frank Sinatra IN HER CARRY-ON Hermès cashmere scarf LOVES TO VISIT Paris.
