From the Publisher

To those who live outside South Florida, it may seem like Palm Beachers live in a perpetual state of summer bliss, able to enjoy lazy days at the pool year round. Yet little do they know summer is actually the only time we do relax, after the whirlwind of the fall and winter social season is finally over. And thankfully for us, South Florida offers myriad indulgent ways to recharge our energy and health. One of the well-known spas in our region is Miami Beach’s Canyon Ranch, which offers programs that can help clients achieve a healthy weight for life, address their stress, pursue optimal living, manage pain and more. There’s something for everyone, and the sublime surroundings certainly make the healing process euphoric. The Hippocrates Health Institute takes a bit of an unconventional approach to getting well. Thousands have made the pilgrimage to the West Palm Beach center over the past 60 years for help with healing from everything from cancer to premature aging. Offering yoga, ongoing health education classes and more, HHI is a wonderful place to fine-tune your personal wellness program. Eating healthy is also key to a life of wellness, and we are blessed with a variety of indigenous nutritious food sources in South Florida. Yet despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, our community, sadly, is also home to food deserts—areas where healthy foods are difficult to obtain. More than 22,000 residents in Boynton Beach and Riviera Beach have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Resources like Feeding South Florida, which employs a mobile food pantry to bring fresh fruits, vegetables and bread to affected locations, are curbing this problem one family at a time. Jason “Farmer Jay” McCobb is also changing the landscape of Palm Beach County one garden at a time. An advocate for sustainable gardening, he is passionate about teaching others how to grow their own food. I found Farmer Jay on Facebook and have been following his posts about his amazing boxed gardens, which he constructs for clients all over the county. Follow me on twitter @PBIsales Whether you opt for a relaxing day at the spa or kick-start a new diet, I hope you enjoy the lazy days of summer with health, happiness and not a care in the world.

From the Editor

More than any other season, summer punctuates the need to fine-tune our bodies, inside and out. How else to enjoy all the sunshine, leisure time and endless travel? This is why we dedicate our July/August issue to wellness and whole-self health. With informational and inspirational content, we celebrate the mindful approach to well-being, which includes everything from fitness regimens to healthful food choices to the art of relaxation and leisure. We begin with an homage to superfoods—the nutritional powerhouses packed with health benefits. With the help of nutritionists and diet experts, we’ve identified “The 10 Healthiest Foods on the Planet,” listing the virtues of each and adding practical information on how to incorporate them into your diet. If you are inspired by what you read on page 60, log on to palmbeachillustrated.com/ toptenfoods for recipes that will make it even easier to add a daily dose of nutrients to your table. In Palm Beach, fitness is a year-round endeavor, but in the summer the opportunities are even greater. We take a look at the best exercise programs out there to make it easy—and fun—to stay in shape. Whether your idea of fitness involves gruff, military-style coaches or Zen solitude, you will find an option that suits your style in “Fit Palm Beach” (page 64). And if you’re already thinking up a string of excuses (not that we ever would), turn directly to page 66 for creative ways to stay motivated. Wellness, of course, involves more than healthy bodies; it also requires us to reset our attitudes via good old-fashioned fun. For this, we have two words: “Road Trip!” Pack the kids and the dog into the Range Rover and head out on the highway—but first, consult our quintessential guide to driving destinations in Florida and the South. From New Orleans to Naples and from Disney to the Delano, we’ve got the drive market covered. Come along for the ride, starting on page 48. Here’s to your health!

Back In The Swing Again, Thanks To The Foshay Cancer Center.

“I’m so grateful I found out about this treatment option.” -Jill Preston

Jill Preston loves the outdoors. She grew up in the sun, spending her summers at the beach. Those years of summer sun resulted in a skin cancer on her forehead. Surgery was recommended, but Jill’s sister urged her to get a second opinion. Fortunately, that second opinion brought her to the Foshay Cancer Center. It was decided that superficial electron beam radiation therapy was the best treatment option for her. Mexican Royalty By Paul Rubio

The 20-mile corridor uniting San José del Cabo to the east and Cabo San Lucas to the west possesses an astounding natural beauty where desert and ocean collide. Past the pockets of gimmicky hotels and all-inclusive motels, this aquamarine crossroads known as Los Cabos harbors some of the most luxurious resorts in the Americas. Here, we explore the trio of showstoppers that form Mexico’s celeb-studded Holy Grail of luxury travel.

This and opening page: Capella’s restaurants and suites embody Mexican coastal elegance.

sea and mountain A stunning feat of architectural and engineering ingenuity, Capella Pedregal proves the age-old adage of good things come to those who wait. Building the hotel’s grand entrance—which includes a near quartermile tunnel through Pedregal Mountain to an oceanfront promontory—took 10 years alone. This was followed by a series of high-design, boutique low-rises, erected either into the mountainside or along unspoiled beachfront, where all units face ocean panoramas and feature private plunge pools to soak in the scene. Next came 10 overwater pavilions anchoring the 12,000-square-foot Auriga Spa, inspired by the phases of the moon—ever-present in Cabo’s lucid skies—and a collection of slick infinity-edged swimming pools, enveloped by sand and surf. Today, this former quixotic fantasy is a jet-setter’s reality (though a firm pinch is necessary to confirm it’s not a dream). Capella Pedregal’s 96 suites and villas embody Mexican coastal elegance. From the dramatic, studded mesquite wood doors to the handcrafted dark wood furnishings and

colorful textiles, the decor is a blend of Mexican majesty and international chic. The seaward-facing arrangement ensures a front-row seat to the many splendors of this tract of Pacific Ocean: breaching humpback whales; charismatic dolphins riding the waves; endless vistas of the natural arches composing the iconic Land’s End; incredible hues of orange, red, pink and purple painting the sky at sunrise and sunset; and sublime stargazing come nightfall. Adding to this “once upon a time in Mexico” reverie is supreme service across the board, from an in-house personal assistant to the welcoming wait staff, eager to fulfill any request. With a culinary team led by Executive Chef Yvan Mucharraz and Food and Beverage Director Marco Bustamante of French Laundry and Per Se fame, respectfully, the resort’s four restaurants fall nothing short of experiential. In particular, signature restaurant Don Manuel’s focuses on reinvented Mexican cuisine in an elegant hacienda-style setting while El Farallón recreates a traditional outdoor fish market with fresh catch prepared to order on the seasprayed boulders of Pedregal’s foothills. During non-peak hours, Capella’s restaurants transform into classrooms for a variety of culinary programs. Muddle, swizzle, invent and sample at the signature cocktails class with the resort’s lead mixologists. Strap on an apron and prepare to feast on your assignment at Capella’s cooking classes, where the syllabus includes making ceviches, tamales, moles and salsas. (capellapedregal.com)

windows on paradise The resort that wrote the book on Mexico luxury travel has penned a new chapter. With the addition of 12 luxury villas, starting at 4,500 square feet and packing a palpable “wow” factor, Las Ventanas al Paraíso, a Rosewood Resort, delivers a new incarnation of seaside opulence. These immaculate waterfront sanctuaries truly have to be seen to be believed. Blending the use of indoor and outdoor space, floorto-ceiling glass panels open onto a full-sized swimming pool and Cabo’s downy sands. Dive in directly from the master bed or the dining room table, descending the shallow steps that lead to an in-house swim-up bar and a duo of umbrella-capped lounge areas. Never miss the panoramas of sea and sky, as natural light illuminates these vistas through French windows while skillfully placed raised mirrors reflect endless expanses of blue. Relax in the open-air bathroom that includes a hydrotherapy circuit of a steam shower, an outdoor shower and infinity bathtubs for two. Frolic on your own swathe of beach while a 24-hour butler serves homemade guacamole and margaritas at your whim. From beginning to end, this new chapter is an unrivaled experience. Guests arrive to

modern hacienda Perched along a serene micro-peninsula at the tip of the prestigious Palmilla resort community, the One & Only Palmilla redefines the concept of barefoot luxury. Its genesis was a private beachfront hacienda for the mid-twentieth century’s rich and famous; 10 years ago, it blossomed into 250-acre glory. Today, 12 one- to three-story casas—all inspired by the original colonial farmhouse— immortalize Mexico’s golden-age glamour. The resort houses 172 rooms and suites, while the palmbeachillustrated.com | July/August 2014

haute hacienda that started it all has been transformed into a sprawling communal area replete with posh restaurants and bars and a multitiered pool deck. Accommodations all face the ocean blues, strut sprawling terraces and patios and offer the brand’s signature butler service. In late 2013, the resort elevated 24 units to the next level of decadence with the introduction of lagoon pools and terrace tubs. To complement these new private plunge pool suites, the resort also upped the ante on its double beachfront excess. Sixteen full-service beachfront cabanas were added on Turtle Beach, while on Pelican Beach,

the new Pelican Beach Grill was christened the resort’s eighth food and beverage outlet. Prior to recent additions, the One & Only Palmilla was already established as one of the world’s finest resorts. Its destination spa champions a mantra of “Unwind, Restore and Elevate” through the dexterity of top industry professionals and offers specialized services such as pedicures and manicures from the famed French podiatry clinic of Bastien Gonzalez. The “Mexiterranean” cuisine by award-winning Executive Chef Larbi Dahrouch at Agua by Larbi Restaurant and the eclectic flavors at Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Market Restaurant constitute pure foodie fantasia. The 27-hole, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course—immersed in ocean and desert—is often named one of the world’s best (and most beautiful). Though the resort is rightfully exalted, it never rests on the laurels of its existing excellence— though it certainly could—and travelers are richer for it. (palmilla.oneandonlyresorts.com) «

Charmer

From the end of the American Revolution until South Carolina’s succession from the Union in 1860, the South operated almost autonomously within the greater United States, pioneering the distinctive fashion, culture, etiquette, architecture and lifestyle now referred to as quintessentially “Southern.” Though heavily destroyed during the Civil War, the spirit of the South’s cultural and social capital, Charleston, never surrendered. And while the hoop dresses and bayonets have long disappeared, Charleston honors both the glory and pain of its historic past while adapting to modern times like a gracious Southern belle. ROAD TRIP BY Foreverjoy designs

Miles from Palm Beach: 523 Why go: Charleston is one of America’s most charming and historic cities, flaunting a surprisingly liberal edge. The city center buzzes with college students, foodies, tourists and families traversing the quaint and colorful streets of Rainbow Row, the tranquil waterfront and the residential alleys wrapped in grand live oaks and Spanish moss. Beyond Downtown’s borders, greater Charleston revels in the beautiful beaches, historic monuments and plantation homes that define its Southern beauty. Try this: Meeting Street is downtown Charleston’s principal thoroughfare, where romantic carriage tours and fascinating ghost tours recount the city’s

sordid and splendid past while sweetgrass basket weavers construct bespoke souvenirs from the Low Country. Museum Mile (charlestonmuseummile.org) teems with cultural heritage and senior docents, eager to disclose the many stories of Charleston’s antebellum homes and historic places of worship. Where to sleep: Belmond Charleston Place (charlestonplace.com) is the city’s premier hotel, blending eighteenth-century style with modern elegance. The hotel’s iconic chandelier sways between two grand staircases, leading to suites and rooms that continue the antebellum fairy tale. The glass-enclosed rooftop pool and award-winning spa reign as the city’s superlative retreats. The familyfriendly Wild Dunes Resort (wilddunes.com) occupies the entirety of Charleston’s Isle of Palms, with plentiful green space and beachfront peppered by two hotels, vacation rentals and condominiums. Resort-style amenities abound, including six dining outlets and oceanfront pools at the community’s Grand Pavilion, a great place for the kids to socialize. For foodies: The Charleston Grill (charlestongrill.com), a AAA Four-Diamond restaurant and the Mobile Four-Star award winner, presents a seasonally inspired menu of “Pure, Lush, Southern” and “Cosmopolitan” dishes complemented by one of the nation’s best wine lists. Or, for a funky night out, head to Sullivan Island for the eclectic Poe’s Tavern (poestavern.com). The bustling eatery serves farm-to-table bar food in a kitsch setting that pays homage to Edgar Allan Poe, who served at Fort Moultrie between 1827 and 1828. Top attractions: Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens (boonehallplantation.com) is one of the nation’s oldest working plantations, open for tours of its original slave cabins, the colonial revival plantation house and antebellum structures. Out on Sullivan Island, the restored armaments at Fort Moultrie (nps.gov) reveal a living chronicle of American seacoast defense, beginning with the American Revolution and ending with World War II. do ld, Orlan r o W y e n Walt Dis

It wouldn’t be a road trip if it didn’t include Walt Disney World. We know what you’re thinking: Again? Thankfully for us jaded types, the Disney experience keeps evolving for the better. Case in point: Disney’s new “magic bands,” cool little bracelets that store all information for your trip, including accommodations, park tickets, dining reservations and even Fast Passes, pre-planned via My Disney Experience (mydisneyexperience.com). The bands replace paper Fast Passes, tickets, room keys and even cash. They don’t call them “magic” for nothing. And of course, there’s always something new happening at the parks. Our picks: the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the newest family coaster at Magic Kingdom, and the Princess Fairytale Hall, where Rapunzel, Cinderella, the sisters from Frozen and, on occasion, other princesses dwell, ready to pose with adoring fans. (disneyworld.disney.go.com) Miles from Palm Beach: 167 Why go: If you have little kids, you already know the answer to this. If not, consider the stats: The 40-square-mile destination is a veritable land of enchantment with four theme parks, 36 resorts, 63 holes of golf, a sports complex, two spas and a shopping and entertainment district. Try this: For busy individuals or those who have no patience for queues, the VIP Tour Guide service is an absolute must. A plaid-vest-clad cast member escorts VIPs to all attractions, ensuring they never have to wait, and can even secure hard-to-get reservations, such as dinner with Winnie the Pooh and friends at The Crystal Palace. Sometimes, access means passing through “backstage” areas, which only adds to the experience. (407-560-4033) Where to sleep: With its grand lobby and savannah views, the Animal Kingdom Lodge exposes families to the wonders of Africa. Opt for a savannah view room and watch antelopes, giraffes and zebras roam beyond your balcony. We also recommend going for the Kilimanjaro Club experience, which entitles you to a Sunrise Safari through Disney’s Animal Kingdom before the park gates open. The animal viewing is best in the early morning—and in privacy. (disney world.disney.go.com/resorts/animal-kingdom-lodge) Where to eat: Character dining is to children what the Oscars are to adults. This necessitates reservations at Cinderella’s Royal Table or The Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom or at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Epcot. Among those, Cinderella’s offers the finest dining experience, but no one will pay attention to the food anyway. —Daphne Nikolopoulos

The roughly 200-mile belt known as the Florida Panhandle has been lauded as a top vacation destination for its gorgeous beaches, yet its rural qualities have always hindered its image as a luxury escape. In recent years, however, Florida’s northwestern cities have drawn much-deserved positive attention; Tallahassee, for instance, is coming into its own as a hip city, shedding its reputation as just a blasé university or government town. Miles from Palm Beach: 414 (Tallahassee), 525 (Panama City Beach), 537 (Rosemary Beach) Why go: Panhandle cities are hidden gems of exquisite homes, sleepy fishing villages, national parks, oyster shacks and funky beach towns. Try this: Based in Panama City Beach, Island Time Sailing takes visitors on a catamaran cruise around Shell Island and then snorkeling with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. (islandtimesailing.com) Where to sleep: The suites at Tallahassee’s Hotel Duval (hotelduval.com) boast varnished tree-trunk stools, oversized rain showers and a digital in-room concierge. The Panhandle’s first true luxury hotel, Rosemary Beach’s 55-room boutique hotel The Pearl (thepearlrb.com), is also the first in the country to feature Apple TV in guestrooms. For foodies: Indulge in the seafood dishes and raw bar at the iconic Boatyard (boatyardclub.com), an 11-year-old institution relocating this summer to a larger home on Grand Lagoon at Treasure Island Marina. Firefly (fireflypcb.com) in Panama City Beach uses a 1,800-degree broiler to produce top-notch cuisine in a seductive ambiance. In Tallahassee’s emerging Midtown district, the New Orleans-inspired resto-lounge Wine Loft (thewinelofttallahassee.net) matches handpicked wine selections with succulent small bites. Top attractions: Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park (floridastate parks.org), where some of the original Tarzan films were shot, houses miles of protected forest, the largest and deepest freshwater spring in the world and diverse wildlife including turtles, birds and deer. In Tallahassee, the Goodwood Museum and Gardens (goodwoodmuseum.org) still operates as a working plantation and is open to detailed tours. Miami, Florida

Palm Beach’s sexy, artsy, multi-culti sister to the south, Miami is hotter than ever with these newest must experiences. Miles from Palm Beach: 69

URBAN COOL: COMO Hotels & Resorts, a Singapore-based brand with which luxury travelers are familiar, has opened its first U.S. property on Collins Avenue in Miami. COMO took over the old location of The Traymore and transformed it into the Metropolitan, an urban concept with hip accommodations, a gin bar, a private dock and a rooftop spa, all designed with COMO’s minimalist aesthetic. The COMO Shambhala Urban Escape spa is a destination in itself. It features the brand’s signature Asian therapies and an outdoor hydrotherapy pool overlooking the ocean. Shambhala cuisine, focused on living foods, is offered at the spa and as an option at the Traymore seafood restaurant. (como hotels.com/metropolitanmiamibeach) —D.N.

WHERE TO SLEEP: Despite the onslaught of newbies along Collins and Ocean avenues, the hotel that defined South Beach glam two decades ago remains at the top of the Miami Beach food chain. Constant nips and tucks have maintained the Delano’s youthful glow, attracting a global who’s-who to Philippe Starck’s electrifying fantasyland, rife with Alice in Wonderland furnishings and white-on-white design schemes. Ask the concierge for the unpublicized (and complimentary) “ethos tour,” where you’ll learn the intricacies of Starck’s vision and tour the hotel as a living museum: without a doubt one of Miami’s coolest insider experiences. (morganshotelgroup.com/delano) —P.R.

WHERE TO EAT: On the sixteenth floor of the trendy Epic Hotel, Area 31 (area31 restaurant.com) doles out succulent selections from the marine region of its namesake. Executive Chef Wolfgang Birk perfects ocean-to-table cuisine with crudo dishes such as the grouper ceviche with shaved green papaya and tarragon as 52

well as fresh seafood prepared in one of four ways: tomato/olive/caper, red pepper sabayon, salsa verde or lemon/sea salt/chili. Add the excitement of an open kitchen, jaw-dropping rooftop views of the Miami skyline and a top-notch master sommelier to the mix, and you have the recipe for a fabulous Miami evening. —P.R. italian accent: Chicago celebrity Chef Tony Mantuano, of Spiaggia fame, makes his Florida debut in South Beach with Lorenzo (lorenzomiami. com). The authentic Italian cuisine does Mantuano’s homeland proud, featuring hot and cold antipasti including the sublime balsamic glazed tri-color carrots and to-die-for arancini, savory pizzettas from the Italian wood-burning oven, grilled meats and fish, and house-made pastas and gelatos. Dine alfresco on Collins Avenue to people-watch or revel in the art deco-meetsItaly pizzazz of the dining room. —P.R. A Taste of Peru: Disciples of Peruvian food know Gastón Acurio’s name. Acurio is practically synonymous with la cocina Peruana, both in his native Peru and stateside, where he has opened La Mar Cebicheria (San Francisco) and Tanta (Chicago). And now, La Mar by Gastón Acurio, at the Mandarin Oriental Miami, brings his signature novo-Andean and Asian-Peruvian fusion cuisine to our fair state. The experience is worth the drive from Palm Beach. Here are three tastes to try as you sit by the bay and marvel at the Brickell skyline: 1. Cebiche: Classico if you are a purist; nikei if you prefer an Asian spin. 2.Tiraditos: Peruvian-style sashimi with various versions of leche de tigre (tiger’s milk), the concoction the fish marinates in. 3. Anticuchos: Skewers, the popular Peruvian street food. If you are adventurous, opt for the corazón (heart). (mandarinoriental.com/miami) —D.N.

TRY THIS: If you’ve always wanted to learn the fine art of pastry, you may as well study with the best. Antonio Bachour, executive pastry chef at the St. Regis Bal Harbour, certainly qualifies. Don’t expect the basics here. In a recent class, the charismatic Bachour began with a demo on mixing and piping macarons. Talk about baptism by fire. The twohour class continued with painted chocolates—a rigorous process yielding miniature works of art—and turtle-shaped cake pops, a hit with the younger set. Fall classes ($100 per person) are held September 6 and November 8. Naturally, you’ll sample the goods—and take some home. (stregisbalharbour.com) —D.N. FOR KIDS: Miami, a haven for kids? Absolutely! With attractions like the Miami Children’s Museum, Zoo Miami, the Miami Seaquarium and the new Museum of Science opening in 2015, there is a ton for youngsters to do. The best place to base is undoubtedly Key Biscayne, where the pace is quiet and the beaches are most child-friendly. The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne has a program geared toward kids’ natural curiosity. In partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, the Ritz Kids program offers environmentally focused activities that help children learn stewardship for the planet and preservation of marine life through art, discovery and storytelling. Plus, there is a huge clubhouse (and a second one on the club level) with all sorts of activities for young explorers. As a bonus for Mom and Dad, summer Weekday Escape packages (through September 31) include a $500 resort credit. (ritzcarlton.com/keybiscayne) —D.N. PALMBEACHillustrated.com | JULY/AUGUST 2014

Family-Friendly Regarded as a luxury resort that goes to great lengths to cater to families, Sea Island is steeped in tradition. In 1928, shortly after the Cloister opened, President Calvin Coolidge planted the first commemorative live oak tree. Over the years, five more U.S. presidents and other luminaries followed suit, and the trees serve as living reminders of the property’s rich history. As you enter the resort, the stately decor—ornate chandeliers, heavy drapery and dark wood furnishings—are reminiscent of days gone by. The diverse accommodations include the Cloister, with five miles of private beach, an acclaimed spa and a dizzying array of resort activities; the Lodge, a golfer’s hideaway resembling an English country manor; and the Cottages, vacation rentals for those who prefer a little extra privacy. on the Planet

Eating well is a skill cultivated throughout life. Want to live to be 100? Want to look great? Want to feel alive? Then you must consume a nutrient-rich, fresh and fortifying diet. With this in mind, we went on a mission to find the 10 healthiest foods on the planet. Goodbye, trendy tastes; move over, health crazes—these foods have stood the test of time and possess the necessary attributes to be deemed the healthiest. How did we narrow it down to 10? We consulted with local nutritionists and dieticians and then married their advice and expertise with scientific research and nutritional information. Of course, there are many foods we could have included (where are the chia seeds?!), but these 10 simple, whole and unprocessed foods—presented in no particular order—will help jump-start your healthy eating routine.

Healthiest Foods

6/2/14 9:00 AM

“Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there,” explains Courtney Burke, a certified nutrition consultant and healthy eating specialist at Whole Foods in Palm Beach Gardens. While leafy green vegetables are awesome as a whole, kale is among the best—as evidenced by its deep green color. “The color of your food can tell you so much about its nutritional benefits,” says Rebecca Berman, a registered dietician and licensed nutritionist at Palm Beach Dietetics.

Benefits: Indole-3-carbinol: This natural substance protects DNA and has antioxidant benefits, notes Elyse Marrone, a registered dietitian nutritionist and past president of the Palm Beach Dietetic Association. Alpha-linolenic acid: ALA is “an essential fatty acid that supports healthy brain function,” Burke explains. Lutein and zeaxanthin: These carotenoids promote healthy eyes and protect against macular degeneration. How to incorporate: “Kale isn’t just for salads—it has a variety of uses and is surprisingly simple to incorporate into your daily diet,” Burke says. She recommends adding it to a morning smoothie, tossing it into a soup or lightly steaming it for a side dish.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

KALE

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has many healthy recipe ideas, including this broccoli and avocado soup, available on palmbeachillustrated.com.

2

Broccoli

As a member of the healthful cruciferous family, broccoli boasts a number of minerals and antioxidants. “All the cruciferous vegetables in general, like cauliflower, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage—that whole family—are excellent for you,” Berman says.

Benefits: Sulforaphane: Many studies indicate that this compound has anti-cancer benefits. Folate: A form of vitamin B, folate helps make red blood cells, synthesize and repair DNA and prevent anemia. Eat it because: The phytonutrients in broccoli have anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for detox diets. “A lot of people don’t realize that inflammation is actually the cause of a lot of conditions,” Berman says. “A lot of diseases start with having inflammation in your body.”

4

AvOcado

3

“Avocados are the complete package, containing fiber, protein and over 20 essential nutrients,” Burke says. In addition to omega-3 fatty acids, this fruit has monounsaturated fat, potassium and vitamins A, C and E.

Benefits: Potassium: An avocado has more potassium than a banana. “Potassium is considered an electrolyte and it’s really important for muscle function,” Berman says. Monounsaturated fats: These healthy fats decrease the risk of heart disease and improve blood cholesterol. How to incorporate: The recommended serving size is B/f of the avocado, or one ounce; this contains 50 calories and all of the vitamins and minerals.

Blueberries

Though all berries have health benefits, blueberries are at the top of the pack. “Blueberries are in a different class because of that deep blue color,” says Dr. Fatma Huffman, head of Florida International University’s dietetics and nutrition department.

Benefits: Anthocyanin: This flavonoid provides the blueberry’s vivid color and has anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. Vitamin C: The nutrient can lower the risk of many types of cancer as well as cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin A: This is essential for healthy vision. Eat it because: The abundance of antioxidants makes this fruit beneficial to combat diseases like heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration. “The antioxidants found in blueberries help to protect cells and promote healthy aging,” Burke says.

This gluten-free grain is the overachiever of functional foods and a better choice than its carby cousins. “You’re getting more fiber, good antioxidants, more protein and better blood-sugar control, so it’s a win all around,” Marrone says.

Benefits:

6

Protein: “Quinoa is a complete protein, containing all of the essential amino acids,” Burke says. Protein repairs cells, makes new ones and is vital for growth, especially during childhood, adolescence and pregnancy, according to the National Institutes of Health. Magnesium: One of the amino acids contained in the grain, magnesium builds bones and regulates heartbeat. Eat it because: Every vegetarian has been asked, “But where do you get your protein?” Quinoa has a protein content of 15 percent and also contains fiber and iron, making it ideal for vegetarian diets.

Walnuts

If you’re going to go nuts over one nut, make it the walnut. It has more antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids than any other nut, Burke says. “Just one serving [one ounce or 14 shelled halves] of walnuts contains 90 percent of the recommended daily value of omega-3s,” she says.

Benefits: Omega-3 fatty acids: These polyunsaturated fatty acids promote and maintain good health, prevent heart disease, and attack and reduce the risk of stroke. Vitamin E: According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin E may help stop development of plaques in arteries, a common cause of coronary artery disease. Eat it because: Omega-3 fatty acids support heart health, but a study in the journal Neurology also found they may protect against premature aging of the brain and middle-age memory problems. 62

Quinoa

Wild Salmon

Like walnuts, wild salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids. “The omega-3 fatty acids are key; you really want to get between one to two grams a day if you’re healthy,” Marrone says. Wild salmon also has protein, vitamin D and minerals including calcium and iron.

Benefits: DHA and EPA: These omega-3s “promote healthy brain function, especially in children,” Burke says. Protein: Protein is a building block for our bodies. “It’s needed for hair, muscles, skin, organs, energy—it does a lot of important things,” Berman says. Iron: The mineral supports metabolism and is essential for normal cellular functioning. How to incorporate: Our nutrition experts agree that to reap these benefits, you must consume wild salmon, as opposed to farm raised. Compared to the latter, the former is higher in omega-3 fatty acids. And, as Marrone notes, farm-raised salmon has 40 times the amount of PCBs, the synthetic chemical compound polychlorinated biphenyl.

Coconut Oil

Though once discouraged for its relatively high calorie count and saturated fats, coconut oil has recently gained positive attention as some studies now indicate it might increase good cholesterol. However, always opt for virgin or refined coconut oil—never hydrogenated.

Benefits:

8

&

Visit palmbeachillustrated.com /toptenfoods for recipes, more eating tips and a few foods that made honorable mention.

Green Tea

Lauric Acid: This medium-chain fatty acid can improve levels of HDL, or “good,” cholesterol. It is also good for the gut, according to Marrone. Beauty: A natural moisturizer, virgin coconut oil can be used as body lotion or on the scalp for hair health. Energy: Coconut oil is “converted very quickly into energy, so for athletes it’s a great fat,” Marrone says. How to incorporate: Coconut oil can be used in place of butter in vegan baking recipes. And, given its high smoke point, it works well for sautéing and cooking.

Green tea is hailed worldwide for its health benefits. “There’s a lot of research on green tea because there are some phytochemicals, some antioxidants,” Huffman says. Like many of our super foods, it is rich in antioxidants, but what sets it apart is its concentration of epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.

Benefits: EGCG: This potent antioxidant has been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease and can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. “It’s very good for blood flow in general and any condition that’s related to having good flow,” Berman says. Catechins: These polyphenols, the most potent of which is EGCG, may be relevant to cancer prevention, according to the National Cancer Institute. Drink it because: Green tea has been used to prevent cancers including breast, stomach and skin, according to NIH. If you have a genetic predisposition for these cancers, consider incorporating green tea into your daily diet. turmeric is grown in both asia and africa, but some U.S. farmers are starting to grow it due to the high demand.

Healthy Treats

With such an allegiance to healthy eating, you deserve to indulge once in a while. Try one of these health-enriching options: Red wine: Many studies have cited the hearthealthy benefits of red wine. “Resveratrol is what we’re looking at for the benefits,” Marrone says. It is believed this antioxidant reduces LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, thereby preventing blood clots and reducing the risk of heart disease. As with all indulgences, portion is important; a serving size is one four-ounce glass for women and two four-ounce glasses for men. Dark chocolate: This sinfully delicious treat might not be so sinful. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which have positive impacts on vascular health. And, of course, chocolate makes you feel good. “When you eat chocolate, it actually produces endorphins in your body, which has mood-elevating effects,” Berman says. When choosing a chocolate, make sure to select one with a high cocoa content, as the benefits lie in the cocoa.

Turmeric

10

The Asian spice turmeric has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, to treat everything from heartburn to stomach ulcers. Recent studies have indicated turmeric possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. “Turmeric supports a healthy immune system and contains important enzymes that aid in digestion and detoxification,” Burke says.

Benefits: Curcumin: An active ingredient in turmeric, this antioxidant has shown anti-cancer effects in laboratory studies and is anti-inflammatory. How to incorporate: Turmeric can be enjoyed beyond traditional Indian recipes. Burke suggests steeping turmeric root in hot water with lemon and honey to make a calming tea. « PALMBEACHillustrated.com | JULY/AUGUST 2014

FIT David Scarola

Palm Beach From practicing yoga in the Atlantic Ocean to cycling along A1A, Palm Beachers are finding fun ways to stay in shape. Looking for a new workout? Warm up to these local fitness trends. By Jennifer Pfaff

Yoga variations A centuries-old niche discipline, yoga has erupted in recent years into a mainstream exercise focused on fitness of the mind, body and spirit. “It’s a combination of strength and flexibility, but you have a deeper sense of well-being because of the connectedness within it,” says Connie Beaudoin, who opened her Parasutra yoga studio in Palm Beach in 2006. In South Florida, yogis are discovering their mind-body connection in studios, the ocean and even the air. Tasha McWilliams combined her passion for yoga with paddleboarding and last summer launched Tasha’s Yoga Boarding, conducting private sessions in the ocean, the Intracoastal or clients’ homes. “If people are nervous, I’ll ask them: How big is your pool?” McWilliams says. Given the unique setting, some poses are modified for the paddleboard, like standing positions that are instead taught lying down. McWilliams says the lessons can improve in-studio practice because the board’s instability forces participants to concentrate on their breath and core for balance. Placing their hands in the water, or even falling

in, adds a refreshing feeling to the experience. “Physically, it’s easier than most people imagine. But mentally, people hold themselves back,” McWilliams says. From the sea to the air, yogis can take flight at the Bamboo Garden Yoga studio in Delray Beach, where Defy Gravity Yoga instructs aerial yoga classes, which involve performing poses in silk hammocks suspended from the ceiling. “It’s a little bit of Cirque du Soleil and traditional yoga,” says instructor Lisa Midlarsky, who says the practice can decompress the spine, release chronic tension and help with circulation. “You tone yourself upside down and do poses you’d never be able to do on the ground,” she adds. “But the biggest thing about it is it’s fun. Unlike regular yoga, laughter is encouraged.” No matter the variation, yoga can help practitioners tone, gain strength and flexibility and destress. Beaudoin says the yoga mat can also be a place of healing for various injuries, which is how trainer and Bamboo Garden instructor Joy Moates-Homan discovered the discipline. “There’s a place for all yoga in everyone’s life,” she says. “Do it all, and get the best thing for your body.”

Pure Barre

Barre fitness is a total-body workout designed to make participants more toned and flexible through dance- and Pilatesinspired movements focused on the core and abs. “You’ll feel it, and the results are fast,” says Stefanie Ellis, an instructor of Xtend Barre, a worldwide program that originated in Palm Beach County.

Barre Programs Shimmy over, Zumba. Dance fitness has taken a more graceful turn toward workout classes that marry ballet with Pilates. Known as barre fitness, the exercise has grown in popularity thanks to nationwide programs like Xtend Barre, Pure Barre and Pop Physique, all of which are offered locally. While each program varies slightly, a typical barre class is held in a dance studio and incorporates floorwork, movements at a ballet barre and combinations with equipment such as bands, light weights and exercise balls. The classes are fast paced and set to music, and the movements usually differ every time. Devout participants build strength and flexibility and develop a long, lean dancer’s body. “Every single angle of your body is worked in one hour,” says Stefanie Ellis, owner of the Xtend Barre studios in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. “It’s not like you have to leave and work out your arms or abs; it’s all in there.” 66

All Xtend Barre instructors are certified in Pilates, but that doesn’t mean students have to be, Ellis assures: The movements can be modified for individual abilities, regardless of any dance or Pilates background. Pure Barre participants burn between 300 and 600 calories per class, estimates Melissa Hirsch, who owns four studios in Palm Beach County. Ellis recommends taking three to four barre classes per week, and Hirsch predicts students see physical results after 10 classes. Barre classes are often capped around 20-25 people—the majority of whom are women, simply because most men have never held an interest in ballet, Ellis points out. “It’s really fun for a lot of women who always wanted to be a ballerina but never went that far,” she says. Hirsch says she has students who tell her Pure Barre is their new happy hour. “It’s more than a workout; it’s really a lifestyle,” she says.

Exercise

Excuses

Debunked

Just try to talk your way out of a workout with our fitness experts’ responses. 1. “I don’t have time.” Treat working out like a business engagement and write it down, Hirsch suggests: “You don’t cancel meetings with others, and you shouldn’t with yourself.” You can also do an exercise DVD at home, Ellis adds, and you can break it up into intervals that fit your schedule. 2. “I’m too tired.” “That shows you need it more than ever,” Moates-Homan says. Exercising increases energy levels by releasing endorphins. It also regulates sleep patterns, Leveille says. 3. “I’m self-conscious.” Gym-goers aren’t paying attention to anybody else but themselves, trainers assure. “Don’t have a sense of competition with anyone else but yourself,” Ellis says. If you can’t get past it in a group setting, work one-on-one with a private instructor, Beaudoin suggests. 4. “I don’t want to spend time away from my kids.” Exercises like yoga can be practiced with children— even at home with a DVD. Some studios also offer child care, Ellis points out. And know that by exercising, “you’re teaching them by example—and ensuring you’ll be there as long as possible,” Hirsch says. 5. “I’m too old.” “Age is nothing but a number,” says Leveille, who modifies exercises for older clients. Likewise, MoatesHoman instructs yogis in their 80s. “Yoga especially helps with the aging process,” she says. “It keeps us strong, supple.” 6. “I never see results.” That raises concerns about commitment, Beaudoin says. “I’ve never not witnessed results and changes in people when they are consistent,” she says. Give it time, Leveille adds: “Every six to eight weeks, your body adapts to whatever you’re doing.” Hirsch recommends recording body measurements. “The scale may not move, but the composition of your body weight will change,” she says. 7. “I’m not motivated.” Partner with a friend, and put something on the line, McWilliams suggests: “Tell each other, ‘I’ll do this five times a week. If not, I have to buy you a $25 gift card.’” MoatesHoman recommends paying upfront for a block of classes. “If we spend the money, we’re more likely to be there,” she says.

High-intensity interval training A burst of intense exercise. A brief cool-down period. Repeat. That’s the concept behind high-intensity interval training, a workout that aims to oscillate the heart rate through repetitive exercises that activate different muscles. “It maximizes your fat- and calorie-burning efforts in the smallest amount of time,” says Rachel Leveille, the head trainer of Orangetheory Fitness’ Jupiter location. “It not only increases endurance but also strength and your health overall.” HIIT programs—practiced in gyms like Orangetheory Fitness, YOLO Strong Gym in West Palm Beach and Hard Exercise Works throughout South Florida—focus on creative workouts that incorporate equipment such as kettlebells and medicine balls, differing the regimen every time. An hour-long session could start with a short run on the treadmill, then brief strength training with dumbbells, followed by squats and abdominal exercises, with rests in between. The next day, participants might run sprints, jump rope, use a rowing machine and do push-ups. By switching up the routine, “your body will never hit a plateau,” Leveille says. “Your body will never get used to what we’re doing. You’re always going to see continual results.” Orangetheory gym-goers wear heart monitors and work out with the goal of reaching their maximum heart rate for 12-20 minutes. By doing this, the program claims, participants can burn between 500 and 1,000 calories in an hour, then lose an additional 200 calories from an afterburn that lasts as long as 36 hours. Though the workout is challenging, the intense part lasts for only a few minutes at a time, notes Marlene Whitaker, owner of YOLO Strong Gym. “It’s ideal for busy people,” she says, adding some clients don’t stay for an entire class but still reap the benefits of a full workout. As intimidating as a HIIT program may seem, no fitness background is required. “We have people who condition for marathons in my class and those who have never worked out a day of their lives,” Leveille says. “Everybody is doing the same workout, but the benefit is having a personal trainer who is willing to push you or guide you.”

064-FITPALMBEACH-0714.indd 67

Devotees of highintensity interval training notice an increase in cardiovascular endurance within five classes and physical results after two weeks, Orangetheory Fitness trainer Rachel Leveille estimates. “It’s mostly building lean muscle while simultaneously burning fat, which is very hard to do,” she says.

Outdoor endurance As the home of such popular races as the Palm Beaches Marathon and Run Fest, the Motivation Man I½ ron/Olympic Triathlon and the Susan G. Komen South Florida Race for the Cure, Palm Beach County is an outdoor obstacle course many tackle by foot or bicycle tire—and often in encouraging crowds. Founded 15 years ago to promote running in South Florida, the Palm Beach Roadrunners consists of 200-350 members who participate in group runs and training. The open-membership club also organizes the local Run 4 the Pies, Classics by the Sea and Shamrock Run races. Members range from recreational athletes to some of the county’s top runners, and “nobody looks down on anybody else—some people just [run] a little faster than others,” says Gary Walk, president of the nonprofit group. One advantage of running in Palm Beach County is the year-round warm weather, says Walk, a Pittsburgh native (although he acknowledges running in the summer must be done early in the morning to avoid the heat). The scenery, he says, is another bonus: Walk runs along A1A in Juno Beach, close to the turquoise Atlantic Ocean. “I look out at the sunrise, and I just can’t believe I’m here,” he says. The same benefits are true for cycling, says Bill Bone, a Palm Beach attorney and triathlete. “Here Clockwise from bottom left: Yurbuds earphones; the Fitbit Flex wristband; screenshots from the Hot5 Fitness app.

The invitation-only Bill Bone Racing Team includes members like Mark Hassell (far left), the former lifeguard supervisor of Palm Beach for nearly 27 years, who has completed 14 Iron Man races. “Cycling has become one of the most popular family-style sports,” says founder Bill Bone (left), who has finished 25 sprint triathlons. “You can start when you’re in your twenties, but we’ve got people riding well into their sixties and seventies. You can ride your whole life.”

in Florida, it’s one of the most popular sports because of the weather and the flat terrain,” he says. In 1989, he founded the Bill Bone Racing Team, one of the state’s oldest cycling teams. Like the Roadrunners, Bone’s group consists of amateur and professional cyclists who ride and train together throughout South Florida. “There’s not a day you can drive down A1A and not see a Bill Bone jersey out there,” says Mark Hassell, the group’s treasurer. Bone and Walk also speak of the support and camaraderie members of their respective clubs gain. A real estate lawyer, Walk credits running for helping him forge business and social connections with people of all backgrounds. “It’s a great equalizer,” he says. “It cuts across all spectrums and all levels of society. … When you lace those shoes up, everybody’s equal.”

No food says “all-American summer” more than a hot dog right off the grill, and in Palm Beach County, the dogs are high-class hot. At the Palm Beach Grill, the Silver-Service kosher hot dog is a whimsical menu staple. Presented on a poppy-seed bun made that day, it comes with a pageantry of diced tomatoes, sauerkraut, fresh coleslaw mixed to order, hand-cut French fries and half of a deviled egg. We recommend ordering as an appetizer—The hot dog can be served sliced into smaller bites to share. Hailing inspiration from New York City public schools, Aaron and Stephanie Merullo three years ago launched PS 561, a school bus-style food truck that dishes out hot dogs— just like the carts on every street corner of the Big Apple. The menu features gourmet toppings and combinations such as the Doug E. Fresh—bacon, cheddar, barbecue sauce, sautéed onions and the truck’s special 561 sauce, a cilantro-cream mixture—plus traditional condiments for purists. Based in Lake Worth, the bus is a regular at the Food Truck Invasion and Gourmet Truck Expo events and is also available for private catering. And for those who prefer the filet mignon of franks, Kobe beef dogs are ready to order at Burger Bar in Palm Beach Gardens, HotDogOpolis in Boca Raton and BurgerFi locations in West Palm Beach and Delray Beach. —J.P.

A Vintage Find The next time you find yourself admiring the SLEEK, glass-enclosed wine wall at HMF at The Breakers, see if you can spot the 1907 bottle of Pereira D’Oliveira Reserva Malvazia Madeira nestled among the labels. The 107-year-old Portuguese vintage is the oldest of the restaurant’s 12,000 wine selections, costing $130 a pour. The average wine consumer might overlook Madeira—“most people think it’s a drink for Grandma,” jokes Virginia Philip, the resort’s master sommelier—but true oenophiles appreciate its sweet flavor, which comes from the Malvasia grape. “It has a caramel note to it, but it’s not overly heavy,” Philip says. The wine cellar at HMF contains 12,000 bottles, including a rare 1907 Madeira.

Madeira is served slightly chilled and is best paired with dishes like crème brûlée, vanilla ice cream or cheese, but Philip recommends enjoying a glass of the 1907 on its own, savoring every sip. (561-290-0104, hmfpalmbeach.com) —J.P.

It’s the Law!

Regulating the consumption of alcohol never sounded so … bizarre By Mark SPivak

Approval ratings for the U.S. Congress may be at an all-time low, but even that legislative body’s flaws are outdone by other state and foreign lawmakers’ foibles. If you doubt this is true, consider these 10 strange alcohol-related laws that are (or up until recently were) on the books.

1

In Ohio, you are prohibited from feeding alcohol to a fish—eliminating one of the prime entertainment sources for pet koi and making the wild variety harder to reel in.

2 3

Alaska goes further, forbidding citizens from giving booze to a moose. Once again, this may make hunting more complex, but it also removes the threat of being charged by a drunken, enraged (and very large) wild animal.

In Pennsylvania, a man who wants to buy a bottle of alcohol (any type) must have a note of permission from his wife—a very sobering thought, indeed. We have no idea if this is being enforced, but if you’ve ever tried to purchase wine or spirits at a Pennsylvania state liquor store, you know it’s not beyond the realm of possibility.

4

Fanciful laws aimed at alcohol purveyors and imbibers can be found all over the nation, including, from top to bottom: Alaska, Ohio, New York and Texas.

In Texas, bar patrons are not allowed to consume more than three sips of beer at a time if they are standing up. Customers who have already hit the floor are, presumably, exempt.

5

Not to pick on Texas, but in the Lone Star State, the entire Encyclopedia Britannica was banned because one of the volumes contained a recipe for homemade beer. It’s unknown whether this law was passed because of pressure from latter-day Puritans, neo-Prohibitionists or the beer lobby.

6

In New York, customers can buy wine, corkscrews, glasses and other accessories at any liquor store, but the State Liquor Authority forbids these shops to sell wine gift bags. Violate the law and the store is subject to a $10,000 fine. It’s unclear whether this cuts down on the giving of wine as gifts, but they’re probably not selling a great deal of Crown Royal, either.

7 88

The European continent, too, has some odd rules. Women are not allowed in the obscure wine region of Mount Athos, Greece, and have been prevented from visiting for more than 1,000 years.

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

088-POUR-0714-2.indd 88

6/2/14 2:58 PM

Mount Athos is the site of a monastery that makes wine, and the presence of women is believed to be a distraction for the celibate monks. Over the centuries, women have snuck in from time to time, most notably Helena of Bulgaria, who was brought there in the fourteenth century to escape the plague. Since she was carried around in a carriage the entire time and her feet never touched the ground, it didn’t count as an official visit.

8

9

At Trinity College in Dublin, any student taking an exam can demand a glass of wine at any point—but only if he or she is wearing a sword.

In Germany, sparkling wine (known in that country as Sekt) must be kept in a cage in a wine cellar under lock and key, and the wine is subject to a luxury tax by the government. The law has been in effect since 1902 and was originally intended to help fund the German Navy. If you’ve ever had Sekt, you’re under no illusions that anyone would attempt to steal it.

10

Curious statutes are found outside of the States, too, including Mt. Athos, Greece (above) and Dublin, Ireland (below).

The prize for the world’s strangest wine law goes to a statute passed in 1954 that forbids flying saucers from taking off or landing in the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This regulation inspired Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Randall Grahm to create his famous Rhône-style blend, Le Cigare Volant (translation: The Flying Cigar), and the law has definitely kept the Martian population in Southern France under control. «

Palm Beach County Medical Society and Palm Beach Illustrated are pleased to announce the results of the inaugural “Exceptional Physicians-Exceptional Care” program. The voting process, which was approved by the PBCMS Board of Directors, invited all board-certified physicians who practice in Palm Beach County to vote for any boardcertified physician practicing in our County to whom they would refer their own patients or family members. This year’s process resulted in more than 200 physicians being honored by their peers, 34 of whom received the “Exceptional Physician” designation.

nama-stay For a stay-cation that is at once rigorous and relaxing, check out the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa’s Float and Fly Yoga Retreat, held July 17-20. During this long weekend, participants will practice stand-up paddleboard yoga led by international teacher Amelia Travis. In the evening, instructor Kerri Verna will lead inversion yoga and AcroYoga classes, which include exercises such as forearm stands and headstands. In between, yogis can enjoy the Eau Spa, which has garnered accolades from such publications as CondÊ Nast Traveler and Town & Country magazine. (561-540-4960, eaupalmbeach.com)

Retreat participants will experience paddleboard yoga, a modified yoga technique taught by Amelia Travis.

Rowing Revolution

Looking for a fun and refreshing water activity to try this summer? Then pick up an oar and give rowing a shot. As a recreational exercise, rowing reaps many aerobic benefits regardless of age or fitness level. It targets almost every major muscle group, yet is still considered a low-impact exercise that provides a full-body workout. In addition to gatherings for master rowers, the North Palm Beach Rowing Club hosts learn-to-row courses during July and August. Participants are taught the fundamentals of rowing, including terminology, care and use of equipment, basic techniques and safety rules. (561-691-0912, npbrc.com)

Fitness fun The Kids Fitness Festival of the Palm Beaches returns to the Palm Beach County Convention Center from July 16-17. This annual festival gives local youth the opportunity to dabble in more than 40 sporting activities, including archery, soccer, bowling, squash, field hockey, tennis and surfing. Professionals from each sport will be on hand to lend coaching support and lead clinics, and local mascots will appear to cheer on the kid athletes as they tackle the rock wall and dominate the bounce house. The Skinny on Easy Raw Sugar Substitutes In a raw diet, refined sugar should be avoided. Most raw “baking” recipes substitute refined sugar with a healthier, all-natural ingredient. Common substitutions include raw honey (which is not vegan), maple syrup and processed dates. To make your dates sugarsubstitute ready, combine them with water in a food processor until smooth. The amount of water to dates depends on how thick or loose you prefer the final syrup to be. A good starting ratio to keep in mind is one cup of pitted dates to two cups of water.

Buzzworthy

Summertime means the height of mosquito season. This year, skip the DEETbased repellents and choose a chemical-free alternative. Lemon eucalyptus is a potent and natural bug repellent, as specified in an article published in the Malaria Journal. The synthesized version of oil of lemon eucalyptus, referred to as PMD, is an approved insect repellant by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and can be found in such products as Off! Botanicals. Though pure lemon eucalyptus oil has not received the same distinction from the CDC, it has long been used as a repellent, contains 85 percent citronella and can be effective for around two hours. In Boca Raton, Lisa’s Herbs and Oils hand pours custom blends of essential oils, including lemon eucalyptus. (954-415-1871, lisasherbsandoils.com)

Balance Research Roundup

Kendall Nettles

Kirill Martemyanov

Two Jupiter research institutions are making headlines for scientific studies, advancements and initiatives. At the Scripps Research Institute, scientists have unveiled the mystery behind resveratrol’s healthy properties and also identified a protein that plays a crucial role in memory. Resveratrol—a compound found in grapes, red wine and blueberries, to name a few— is heralded for its apparent health benefits and anti-inflammatory properties. Associate professor Kendall Nettles led the study that identified how the compound achieves its healthy attributes, discovering it controls the body’s inflammatory response by binding with the estrogen receptor without stimulating cell proliferation. Also at Scripps, scientists led by Kirill Martemyanov have shown that a protein complex, RGS7, is vital to learning and memory formation. In conjunction with another protein, RGS7 works within the hippocampus, the section of the brain that converts short-term memory to long-term, to regulate a signaling system necessary for cognitive development. Without this process, deficits in learning and memory occur. Marte-

myanov believes these findings could be used in therapeutic applications. (561-228-2000, scripps.edu) At the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, a number of researchers have been awarded grants to further their studies. The Whitehall Foundation has provided Dr. Hiroki Taniguchi with the funds to study chandelier cells, which appear to play a role in brain disorders such as schizophrenia and epilepsy. “If we understand the precise function of chandelier cells in neural circuits, we may be able to use this information to develop new diagnostics and treatments for brain disorders,” Taniguchi explains in a statement. Additionally, Dr. Hyungbae Kwon was awarded a grant to research autism spectrum disorder, specifically the study of the proteins neuroligins, which may be associated with neural communication disruptions prevalent in an autistic brain. All of these findings and initiatives illustrate the wealth of scientific riches to be found in Palm Beach County. (561-972-9000, maxplanckflorida.org)

Technology permeates every facet of our lives, including doctor’s visits. Seeing the need for a stronger marriage of technology and health care, Boca Raton entrepreneur Daniel Cane co-founded Modernizing Medicine. The company’s Electronic Medical Assistant services cloud-based records to individual practices and is available for iPads. “EMA allows physicians to have a more efficient and personal appointment with a patient,” Cane

Daniel Cane

explains. We spoke with Cane about the features of EMA and how technology is changing the patientdoctor relationship. (561-880-2998, modmed.com)

&

To learn more about the features of EMA and the future of medical technology, visit palmbeachillustrated.com/modernizingmedicine

Mod Med How are advances in handheld technology affecting the medical experience for patients? So many patients have iPhones and iPads, so they are accustomed to the technology. They do their banking, order their movies, etc., using mobile platforms on a daily basis. Health care is behind the times compared with other industries, and it will take some getting used to now that effective applications such as EMA are beginning to change the landscape. What guiding philosophies regarding doctor-patient interaction did you take into account when designing EMA? The first was that we wanted to develop an EMR system that could save physicians time. … Secondly, we hoped to create a system allowing physicians to focus more on their patients, instead of writing in charts or turning their backs to patients to type into a computer. What do you see as the greatest benefit to incorporating electronic medical record systems into doctor’s offices? It saves doctors time. This enhanced efficiency frees up more time for doctor-to-patient dialogue and improves the quality of their interactions.

Makes Sense

Let’s be honest: Undergoing your annual mammogram is not exactly a day at the spa. At least, not until now. The new SensorySuite, designed by GE Healthcare and available at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute, brings a spa-like environment to the exam room with the goal of alleviating stress or discomfort. Patients choose from three surroundings—garden, waterfall or beach— that simultaneously stimulate sight, smell and sound to distract from the task at hand. BRRH is the first Florida location to offer the SensorySuite experience—which, given its emphasis on comfort, could help lead to better breast screenings and overall health. (561-955-5000, brrh.com)

Average is Beautiful Step aside, Barbie. Artist Nickolay Lamm is giving young girls a more realistic representation of the female body with the Lammily doll. Lammily is based on the dimensions of an average 19-year-old girl, as specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her down-to-earth style and minimal makeup make her a more apropos and healthy playmate and model. And, because she has articulated wrists, knees, elbows and feet, she can run, jump, play and kick—or at least pretend to. Since raising more than half a million dollars through crowd funding, Lamm has been developing the first-edition Lammily dolls, which are available for preorder with a November delivery date. Eventually, the artist hopes to expand the line to include many ethnicities and healthy shapes, all stressing the message that average is beautiful. (lammily.com)

Ilana Jacqueline

Michael Price Photography

PalmBeach Surgical Associates Boca Raton resident Ilana Jacqueline is bringing a voice to rare diseases through her blog Let’s Feel Better. Jacqueline was diagnosed with the chronic illnesses Primary Immune Deficiency Disease at 19 years old and Dysautonomia at 22 and began blogging shortly after the latter diagnosis. Having written for local and national publications and websites since she was 14, the bubbly millennial found blogging about her rare diseases to be a natural and necessary therapeutic release. “I tried explaining everything to my family and my friends, and had a lot of people who just didn’t understand,” she says. “They either didn’t believe that I was really sick or would say things like, ‘Feel better.’” As Jacqueline notes, living with rare diseases can be an isolating existence. “When you have a rare disease, you just feel so alone. … It’s hard to get support when you can’t put a label on something,” she says. On her blog, she shares her day-today experiences with her own diseases in hopes of connecting with those suffering from the same illnesses or other, more common ailments. “Even though I have rare diseases, there are so many daily situations that I know people with anything from Crohn’s Disease to arthritis to HIV go through every day,” she says. Presented in a personal, diary-style narrative, Let’s Feel Better focuses on Jacqueline’s struggles as well as her advice and coverage of new research and treatments. Her tone, which she describes as “tentatively hopeful and amused by the terrible things that happen,” is at once perspicacious and entertaining, full of pop-culture references, hysterical GIFs and witty asides. “It makes me feel great [to know] people are either learning or connecting or just laughing even when they’re having really bad days,” she says. Beyond her own blog, Jacqueline is also working on a memoir and is the managing editor for the blog at the Global Genes Project, a rare and genetic disease advocacy organization. With Global Genes, Jacqueline is able to help other patients tell their stories. “All I want is for other people to come out and blog about their diseases,” she says. “Hopefully, that helps patients who need to see that there are other people like them.” (561-542-1105, letsfeelbetter.com)

For Body: Just in time for summer travel, the Entrain app has arrived to help curb jet-lag woes. Entrain uses lighting schedules to help users adjust their circadian clocks to the outside hour. Enter your typical hours of light and dark in your current time zone, then select the time zone you’ll be traveling to and when you’ll be leaving. The app will provide a schedule of when to be in periods of light and dark leading up to your departure so by the time you leave, your body will be ready for London, Rome or even Tokyo. (entrain.org) For Mind: The mental benefits of meditation are undisputed, but it can be difficult to get started. The Mindfulness Mediation program, available via the Mental Workout app, provides meditation novices with the tools to get in the zone. Designed by meditation expert Stephan Bodian, the program offers instructions on such topics as sitting positions and breathing, as well as six guided meditations varying from five to 40 minutes. It also includes deep relaxation exercises, tips for mindful traveling, inspirational talks and an eight-week meditation plan. (800-940-0160, mentalworkout.com) For Health: With the First Aid App by American Red Cross you’ll be ready to tackle whatever first-aid emergency life throws your way. The app is stocked with expert advice on how to handle common crises like allergic reactions, burns and asthma attacks. And, because the info is preloaded, users don’t need an Internet connection to access the tips and instructions. Videos and step-by-step instructions walk you through tasks, while interactive quizzes let you to test your new skills. (800-733-2767, redcross.org)

Balance Jill Botnick

There are many ways to shave off a few swings from one’s golf game. In Palm Beach, Squeeze Pilates applies the principles of Pilates to golf in its Pilates for Golf program. “Pilates helps golfers to hit the ball farther and straighter while reducing the risk of injury,” explains instructor Jill Botnick. We chatted with Botnick about the philosophies and benefits of Pilates for Golf, which is available by appointment seven days a week in group and private settings. (561-804-9977, squeezepilates.com) How do Pilates principles apply to golf techniques? The principles that are incorporated in a Pilates program are core strength, flexibility, lengthening the spine, alignment and posture, stability, balance and focus. All movements in golf initiate from the abdominals, and Pilates strengthens the deep core muscles, which in return give the golfer more power in his swing. What are the prime benefits of the workout? Pilates builds core strength, and the core must be engaged through the entire golf swing. The core includes the muscles from

the upper torso to the hips. It works the deeper abdominal muscles that give the golfer more stability needed when hitting the ball. Can Pilates for golf address injuries acquired while golfing? When Joseph Pilates started teaching his method of body conditioning in New York, one of his goals was to rehabilitate injured dancers. The same principles can be applied to golf injuries.

Daniel C. Morello, MD, FACS Bonnie marting, dnp, arnp Anushka Spa, Salon & Cosmedical Centre

When selecting a specialist in Medical Aesthetics, what are the key criteria? The ideal medical aesthetics practitioner devotes his or her entire focus to that specialty alone and has a proven record of excellence and acclaimed results in the field. It can take many years to develop the skill to help patients look their best without looking overdone. Many providers today want to add some of these treatments to their existing practice, whether it be internal medicine, ophthalmology or even dentistry. Anushka’s medical team boasts Dr. Daniel C. Morello, FACS, world-renowned plastic surgeon and past president of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Bonnie Marting, DNP, ARNP, who received her specialty aesthetic training at John Hopkins University and has more than 17 years of aesthetic experience. Today, Marting is a regional trainer for BOTOX, Juvéderm, Restylane, Dysport, Sculptra and Voluma. What are the latest developments/innovations in your field? One of the latest innovations in this field is Voluma by Allergan. It’s a relative of Juvéderm but has the capacity to lift and sculpt better than any of the other fillers available in the country. While Sculptra can lift and restore youth over time, Voluma is more immediate and can leave the patient “party-ready” the same day. What differentiates your practice From other specialists in the field? As an educator and a trainer in the medical aesthetics arena, I see firsthand the misconceptions and errors made by practitioners early in their career. Maturing into a good provider is a practice that takes time, experience and care. We offer an approach that minimizes fear and eases discomfort to provide not only great results but also a wonderful experience from the first phone call to the actual treatment. Plastic Surgery

What are the latest developments/ innovations in your field? Plastic surgery is constantly evolving. The newest advances in plastic surgery include contoured gel implants for breast surgery. We are employing advanced fat-grafting techniques and new volumizing fillers to treat facial aging. These techniques can give nearinstant improvement. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? I have an artistic eye and a perfectionist mind-set. But what really distinguishes my practice is the time I spend truly learning and understanding my patients’ needs and desires. Every patient is different, and taking the time to learn these differences helps me provide my patients with the best care for their individual needs. What is your favorite pastime? I have three wonderful children, ages 8, 6 and 2. My favorite pastime is spending time with them. I love to incorporate them into my hobbies. It is great to see them learning to do the things I enjoy: fishing, gardening and craftwork. Together, we have built toys, furniture and a wagon. It is amazing to teach your own children to build things with hand tools and see how quickly they learn. Office Contact: Terry Snyder 1500 N. National Pain Institute

What does National Pain Institute do to treat Fibromyalgia patients? We have had great success treating fibromyalgia in a stepwise, multimodal approach that incorporates a micronutrient intravenous infusion. What are the latest developments/ innovations in your field? The latest developments in pain management involve cranial nerve stimulation, which is minimally invasive and has been achieving great results in controlling chronic pain. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? We are using the latest advances and treatments for chronic pain. Our procedures are performed in a hightech, state-of-the-art surgical facility. With a full nursing staff, we use a multimodal approach to treat pain and improve function. Office Contact: 5365 W. Jacob d. steiger, md Steiger Facial Plastic Surgery

When selecting a specialist in Plastic Surgery, what are the key criteria? Whether you are seeking a facelift, rhinoplasty or Botox, choosing a facial plastic surgeon is an important decision. Finding a surgeon with excellent credentials and board certification ensures a physician is qualified to treat you. You must also establish a good relationship built on confidence and trust with your physician. Always view before and after photos of patients who have had similar procedures, and speak to some of the doctor’s patients. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? Our practice is dedicated purely to facial plastic surgery. Focusing and specializing on just the face and neck, we combine the most advanced techiques and the latest technology to achieve the best possible results. How do you keep up on the latest advances in your field? Dr. Steiger attends and lectures at national and international facial plastic surgery meetings. He is also continually evaluating new technology, from new lasers and devices to surgical instruments and medications, that allow for the most effective results with as minimal downtime as possible. Charles A. Messa, III MD, FACS Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center

When selecting a specialist in cosmetic surgery, what are the key criteria? The most important factor is choosing a plastic surgeon with experience, advanced training and board certification. The physician should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have documented experience in cosmetic surgery through membership in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. What are the latest developments/ innovations in your field? Scientists can now sequence the human genome and identify single genes, isolating stem cells to be programmed to become any type of cell in the body. Such achievement has the potential for curing diseases and repairing damaged tissues. The use of adipose derived stem cells for soft tissue augmentation and facial rejuvenation is going to revolutionize treatment for contour deformities, breast reconstruction and restoration of loss of facial soft tissue volume with aging. What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field? My practice is unique in the fact that our entire office is dedicated to each individual patient’s utmost satisfaction and wellbeing. Patient welfare, safety, and attention to detail in patient care are my priority. I treat each patient as if they were a member of my family. The Art of Ikat Designer Sallie Giordano shows how ikat can be used as a focal point in a room: “This beautiful house belongs to a couple who is very serious about collecting art, so many of the principal rooms have very subdued palettes to let the art shine,” she says. “Since this room is surrounded by windows with very little wall space, we wanted to use a fabric that would work as a painting itself. This colorful ikat does just that.” Leta Austin Foster and Associates Inc., Palm Beach (561-655-5489, leta austinfoster.com)

Marketing THAT WORKS Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ advanced marketing makes an impact on buyers and sellers by Nila Do Simon

PROMOTION

It’s a question every brand asks itself: How effective is our marketing? For Waterfront Properties and Club Communities, the proof of its success is easy to see.

agents can connect with other Realtors around the globe to market their properties on a worldwide level—just another advantage the company offers its clients.

When Andrea Weinberg became a Realtor, she wanted to present buyers with the home of their dreams and align herself with a company that understood the importance of marketing the right home to them. She was able to do so with Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ advanced marketing system.

“Rob is a tremendous entrepreneur, a tremendous marketing person, just a dynamic individual with a great deal of experience that he applies to the company,” says Michelle Brand, a Realtor who has more than 13 years of experience. She, too, says the website has enhanced her relationship with buyers, who need the service of a real estate expert who can deliver trusted guidance. As Brand puts it, “With the website, we can connect with buyers who want real estate expertise from us.”

Working with Waterfront Properties, the area’s leading luxury real estate firm, Weinberg admits the company’s strong Web marketing and presence has been a major game-changer. “I did not receive any buyer leads or mentoring from my previous company,” says Weinberg, a former associate in the corporate world with an MBA degree. “Now, with Waterfront Properties, I’m constantly receiving leads from potential buyers. My sales were only $18,000 in one year with my old company, versus sales of more than $7 million in my first year at Waterfront. And I owe a lot of it to Waterfront’s marketing.” For Weinberg, the leads she receives from Waterfront Properties’ website allow her to work with buyers directly and efficiently. When buyers scan the website, they can enter their ideal home characteristics, which Waterfront Properties agents then use to locate that perfect home. These marketing leads have impacted home buying throughout the entire company. “When a buyer looks for something on our website, I connect with them,” Weinberg explains. “I set them up with an automatic search for any new properties that come to the market that might be of interest to them. The good news is that Waterfront Properties has all these incredible listing agents who are the leaders in the area, so if a buyer wants a certain square footage, Intracoastal views and whatever else, I can connect internally with a Waterfront agent. I can then call the buyer and let them know about properties that aren’t even on the market yet.” Jeanette Horn, too, has championed Waterfront Properties’ website and Web presence. The five-year real estate veteran says as the digital age and client behavior develop, so has Waterfront’s marketing strategy. “Here’s the difference between us and other companies: Waterfront is continually adding to its marketing strategy based on technology, statistics and how people are buying,” Horn says. “We are not only doing print ads, but Waterfront has discovered that statistically people are using the Internet as well. So real estate is available anytime, all the time, for buyers on the Internet or in print.” The importance of marketing has not been lost on Waterfront Properties’ managing partner, Rob Thomson, and his mother, Joan Thomson, the company founder. Both are globally recognized as leading real estate marketers through the prestigious Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate, an invitation-only organization composed of the world’s topgrossing Realtors. Through that organization, Waterfront Properties

Every marketing material Waterfront Properties has employed—from its state-of-the-art website to its company polo shirts with a carefully stitched Waterfront logo—has made an impact on buyers, Brand says. John Nugent, the leading Singer Island condo Realtor, has been with Waterfront Properties for nearly 15 years, witnessing the impactful changes the company has made to its marketing philosophy. “It’s totally different from when I started,” Nugent says, referring specifically to the importance of search-engine optimization, which is the process of affecting how visible a website or a Web page is when searching for it on the Internet. “They’ve always been a huge marketing company, and now Waterfront Properties has been keen enough to concentrate on SEO development.” Nugent credits the work of Marketing Director David Abernathy and his advancement of SEO in the company’s Web-based presence. For buyers on the Internet searching for homes in the Singer Island area, Nugent’s name and home listings are among the first found. And that’s the case for all communities serviced by Waterfront Properties agents. The Web marketing has made a huge difference in Nugent’s relationship with buyers. In addition to the effective marketing in print publications, Nugent says, “I probably get hundreds of registered Webbased leads a year to add to a database of 3,000 buyers.” For Isabel Stephenson, who has nearly 23 years of real estate experience in northern Palm Beach County, she remains impressed with Waterfront’s motivation to succeed in a fluctuating digital world. Each Waterfront Properties tool Stephenson uses has “revolutionized the way we do business.” One such program has allowed Waterfront Properties buyers to sign contracts paperlessly and submit them electronically—an option that has proven essential when multiple offers are on the table. “Time is of the essence when other buyers are interested in the same property, so to be able to get a contract to the selling side faster than others is absolutely essential,” Stephenson says. She adds, “Rob Thomson and David Abernathy have always tried to refine and upgrade the system. They are always looking for the next thing for us to give our buyers and sellers, and the buyers and sellers could not be more thrilled with what Waterfront Properties offers them.”

Agenda Left: Jane Goodall; center: Buzz Aldrin; bottom: Don Shula. All portraits by Robert Weingarten.

Face Off

The Norton Museum of Art challenges visitors to reimagine the practice of portraiture with the exhibit “Living Legends: The Montage Portraits of Robert Weingarten,” on display beginning July 17. The collection comprises “portraits” of 26 prominent figures, including former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, primatologist Jane Goodall and composer Stephen Sondheim. Here’s the twist: None of the subjects actually appears in the final pieces. Rather, Weingarten puts a spin on traditional portraits by weaving together images that capture the essence of that subject. Each legend provided Weingarten with personal information about his or her background, interests and experiences so the artist could illustrate the person’s identity and what each holds dear on the inside, instead of focusing on the outside. Paper Portraits Through August 31, the playful and intriguing work of artist Kyoko Hazama will be on display at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in the exhibit “From A Quiet Place: The Paper Sculptures of Kyoko Hazama.” The petite paper figures are symbolic self-portraits of the artist at different ages throughout her life. Constructed solely out of paper, each delicate and intricate sculpture can fit in one hand. Many vignettes include animal figures, which can be interpreted as representations of real people from the artist’s life who have protected her as she transitioned from a child to an adult. Florida View the work of Florida’s up-andcoming artists in the sixty-third annual “All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition” at the Boca Museum of Art from August 10 to October 25. Following a threemonth call to artists, guest juror Trong Gia Nguyen selected around 100 works of art from a pool of roughly 1,600 submissions that included paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. Last year, Geoff Hamel (shown) was awarded best in show and received $1,500 for his three submissions. This year, $4,000 will be distributed amongst a best-in-show winner and five merit award recipients during the exhibition’s opening night. (561-392-2500, bocamuseum.org) —J.B.
