From the Publisher

Every year, the first two weeks of December are challenging. It’s not because I’m overwhelmed with work—although there’s a lot going on. It’s from over-partying. The swirl of events this month is not for the faint-hearted. There are luncheons, galas, committee meetings, dinners in private homes and holiday parties. As my mother always says: “Oh, you poor dear—another evening at The Breakers!” At least for all this partying, we are fortunate to have a plethora of exciting stores to find the perfect outfit. From Saks Fifth Avenue to Neiman Marcus, the mix of highend names in our area is impressive. World-renowned Worth Avenue alone has almost every designer around the globe represented. Be sure to stop by the newly renovated Valentino, where you are guaranteed to find your dream dress. For the gentlemen, Guy La Ferrera in The Shops at Boca Center has always been the place for apparel from popular Italian designers. Gents, you can also find sharp looks at the recently opened Brioni in Palm Beach and Hugo Boss in The Gardens Mall. This year, we are excited to sponsor Nat King Cole Generation Hope’s President’s Society Dinner and Auction being held at the Sailfish Club. Daughters of the incomparable Nat King Cole, twin sisters Timolin and Casey Cole created the charity to help keep music alive in public schools. They believe all children have the right to a musical education. On December 11, we will co-host a fabulous holiday brunch at Anne Fontaine in the Town Center at Boca Raton. If you’re not familiar with Anne Fontaine, the brand is known for its exquisitely tailored white shirts and ornamental collars and bibs. As we all enjoy ourselves and hold family close this holiday season, take a few moments to remember those less fortunate. Consider helping to make this a better time for others by volunteering at a facility or fulfilling someone’s wish list with items they can’t afford. I know I will. Happy holidays to all!

From the Editor

The festive season is upon us. You can see it in the children’s smiles when Santa Claus comes to town (or, in the case of Palm Beach, drives up in a Ferrari convertible). You can hear it in the Advent music sung by church choirs and in the Hanukkah zimriyah performed so joyfully by young singers. You can smell it in the gingerbread baking and in the wood smoke wafting from fireplaces. And you can feel it in the warm embrace of family. More than any other season, I love the holidays—and I like to make them last longer and longer every year. (This year, together with my family and friends, I started celebrating before Thanksgiving with a lovely Nutcracker-themed event to benefit Quantum House.) And why not? Any occasion to spread cheer, kindness and love should be celebrated to the full extent. In keeping with that sentiment, this month’s issue is dedicated to the magic of the holiday season. From sparkling jewelry tied up with bows (page 48) to a curated guide to locally sourced gifts (page 52) to musings on vintage Champagnes with which to usher in 2015 (page 112), we cover the spectrum of celebrating in Palm Beach. A feature of which we are particularly proud this month is “A True Original,” starting on page 72. Fashion Editor Katherine Lande and I have been talking about doing a story on haute couture for years. At last, thanks to Katherine’s tenacity, it came together for our December issue. We were able to source amazing couture looks from top designers such as Chanel, Elie Saab and Naeem Khan, whose metal-studded and feathered creation graces one of two covers this month (the other being the beautiful Ariana Rockefeller). Gratitude goes to The Breakers for providing the opulent backdrop, to photographer Navid for bringing the story to life with his keen eye and unfailing style, and to the entire crew, because a production of this magnitude really does take a village. I sincerely hope you enjoy this special issue of Palm Beach Illustrated. Let’s all spread a little love this holiday season.

Insider 3Q Wynonna Judd

Country star Wynonna Judd started her career as one half of The Judds, the chart-topping mother-daughter duo that sold more than 20 million albums and garnered five Grammy Awards. When she began performing solo in 1992, her debut album, Wynonna, went quadruple platinum, and the hits have been coming since, with seven more albums and multiple industry awards. Now 50, Judd has publicly experienced her share of ups and downs—including rocky relationships with her mother, Naomi, and sister, Ashley, as well as witnessing her husband and drummer bandmate, Cactus Moser, suffer a motorcycle accident that caused him to lose his left leg—yet she still rocks her signature sass, flaming red hair and sparkly stage presence. On tour with her band, The Big Noise, Judd will perform songs from her holiday album December 11 at the Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts in Fort Pierce. Tickets start at $55. (772-461-4775, sunrisetheatre.com) —Jennifer Pfaff What’s your show like today? I’m just singing about what’s real to me, and the music that’s coming out is surprising even me. … My shows are a combination of a lot of different subjects, and I’ve summed it up to be a tragic comedy. One minute you’re laughing, and the next minute you’re crying—because I am. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently? I wish I hadn’t been so busy thinking about what’s next. That doesn’t allow you to fully live in the moment. I don’t know that I looked around as much and took it all in. My mother was the one who was the historian—she would stop and take the pictures. Do you have any holiday traditions? We bundle up and take a walk into the woods, and we read the Christmas story. My mom used to do it at night, because it was much more dramatic. [We also] say what we’re thankful for. I’m pretty surprised at the things that come out of these kids’ mouths. It’s a moment to stop and be grateful. … It keeps us grounded, no matter how successful we become.

Rooms with a (point of) View

Gregory Ross

“Waspyneedlepo chic” int pillo ws

e soul” rbet for th “Lemon so

By Liza Grant Smith

If “happy chic” was the look the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa was going for when redesigning its suites, the Manalapan hotel made the right decision by entrusting Jonathan Adler (left) with the task. The cheery designer, whose personality matches his bright, peppy decor, is not only skilled at mixing patterns and injecting a room with joyful elements, but he’s also a part-time Palm Beacher—meaning he understands the town’s tropical yet sophisticated resort spirit. Adler chatted with PBI about how he blended both styles for an eyecatching design that is instantly recognizable. How did you inject a sense of Palm Beach into the guestrooms? There are a lot of traditional elements that really say Palm Beach. There’s a bit of waspy chic via needlepoint pillows and some preppy colors. There is a little bit of Slim Aarons glamour and luxury. There’s a nod to Chinoiserie, which feels like traditional Palm Beach. There’s also a real feeling of being in the most glamorous and luxurious cabana in the world. That’s the spirit of Palm Beach, but then I made it new by making it a little more crisp and a little more bright. How did you decide the color scheme? In American hotel rooms, the walls are always dark or heavy. Yet when you go to Capri or Santorini, you walk in and see that blue floor and white walls and you feel like you’re on vacation. So [the room design] had to have a blue floor and white walls to channel that [island] spirit. I knew that it also needed to have a pop of yellow, because yellow is the color of the sun and fun and optimism, and I really wanted the room to feel like lemon sorbet for your soul. What are some fun surprises you incorporated? We have real Slim Aarons photos, and we worked with Donald Robertson to create a custom piece of art that channels the spirit. There are also lots of really nifty pillow designs. I use pillows for perfect punctuation, including my favorite, which is the little Palm Beach needlepoint pillow with the bikini bottom. The body Jonathan’s favorite piece: a pagoda lamp in on the bikini is the perfect level of tan. “Eau turquoise” Everyone should compare that to their bodies before they leave—if it matches, they must have had a great time!

App

When the crowd gathers December 13 for the Palm Beach Opera’s second annual free concert at the Meyer Amphitheatre in downtown West Palm Beach, expect to see attendees looking down at their phones—and that’s just what PBO wants. Last year, the company developed an app that coincided with its Opera @ the Waterfront concert, presenting English lyrics and trivia tidbits about each song as it was performed. This year, armed with a $30,000 grant from Opera America, PBO has expanded the app to include the concert program, artist bios and more, in addition to real-time translations—so don’t put your phone away during this performance. I like the ease and sophistication of [Palm Beach]—the natural beauty is inspiring.

How did Palm Beach influence your own spring/summer 2015 line? Palm Beach plays into the collection as the ultimate backdrop for dressing casually. I like the ease and sophistication of this town— the natural beauty is inspiring. What’s your favorite piece in the collection? The denim shirtdress. I like to take denim and do something different and unexpected. What is your design philosophy? Uncomplicated and thoughtful; an edited and essential designer’s point of view on casual living. How is designing for your line different from designing for Bottega Veneta? The brands are so separate in their execution that I don’t find it difficult to separate the design process. However, they are complementary in the sense that Bottega Veneta will provide you with the “extraordinary,” while Tomas Maier will provide you with the “necessary.” How do you balance your workload? I like to work—it gives me energy. My workload at Bottega Veneta is greater than at my own brand; however, [BV] is much more established in terms of structure and support. At Tomas Maier, we are just re-beginning, and of course new things require nurturing.

&

Who is the Tomas Maier woman? Read the designer’s answer at palmbeach illustrated.com/ tomasmaier

Your father was an architect. How does architecture influence you as a fashion designer? Architecture—like landscape design, furniture design, industrial design and fashion design—are cousins. You try to make something that has design integrity and lasts. Imminent inspiration in beautiful design and architecture as a discipline teaches me that lines and proportion are as relevant to a dress as they are to a building. How do you like to spend your time in Palm Beach? In Palm Beach, we keep it pretty low key and simple: drinks with friends, a walk on the beach or dinner at one of the good restaurants in town. I am a creature of habit and often end up at the Palm Beach Grill.

Wine Lover

Not sure what to give the oenophile on your list? Domenica and Dave Frankland can help. The husband and wife duo own Vinoutlet, the wine shop in the south end of Palm Beach that opened in February. Tap into their advice below for what to gift a wine lover. (561-410-5370, vinoutlet-pb.com) Best wine for holiday gifting? For the traditionalists, a Bordeaux or Burgundy. For those feeling adventurous, try Trebbiano, Brunello or Barolo imported directly from Italy. No matter the occasion, you can’t go wrong with a great bottle of Champagne like Dom Pérignon, Krug or lesser-known gems Jacquesson and Delamotte. Must-have items for a wine lover? A wine decanter. There is wider recognition today that young wines are best decanted. For friends on the go, Fyxation’s leather beer and wine caddies ($39.95-$59.95) provide a fun and practical gift, as the grain-leather caddy attaches directly onto a bicycle (414-973-9083, fyxation.com). True Fabrications’ cooling pour spout ($18.99) and cooling wine glasses ($24.99 for two) are also huge hits, especially with Florida’s heat (800-750-8783, truefabrications.com)! Local place to take an oenophile this season? In Palm Beach: Café Boulud (561-655-6060, cafeboulud.com) and Bistro Chez Jean-Pierre (561-833-1171, chezjean-pierre.com). In West Palm Beach: La Sirena (561585-3128, lasirenaonline.com), which offers a lengthy list of interesting and unusual wines.

The Tawe/Swansea Valley in Brecon Beacons National Park

Imagine a land where blue-gray waters caress historic beaches that give way to greenery-dusted valleys and mountains. Days start with the promise of plucking cockles out of velvet sand before discovering ruins rooted in wildflowers, then visiting parks speckled with sheep and sitting down to a farm-totable feast. In Wales, the grand landscape isn’t a privilege—it’s a birthright. It’s no wonder artists have long flocked here to capture its interminable beauty and romantic spirit. On December 23, British landscape arrives in West Palm Beach with “Pastures Green: The British Passion for Landscape.” On display at the Norton Museum of Art to April 5, the exhibition features roughly 65 works from the National Museum Wales and illustrates the evolving theme of landscape art in Britain through oil paintings, watercolors and photography. But Wales isn’t solely defined by its topography. A country of more than three million

residents, it both possesses its own identity and embraces its place within the United Kingdom. Above all, Wales offers a diverse vacation, whether you long to get lost in nature or find yourself amid cultural thrills. Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, is a marriage of old and new. A college town boasting three universities, it has a vibrant food and nightlife scene housed in centuries-old buildings. The Welsh language, once waning, now thrives and can be heard on the tongues of babes and their grandparents. Even shopping corridors mimic this theme; step inside one of six historic shopping arcades to find the juxtaposition of old infrastructure and new commerce. The National Museum Wales (museumwales. ac.uk) anchors Cardiff’s cultural attractions. In addition to landscape works, it houses the Davies Sisters Collection, the largest collection of

Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and sculptures outside Paris; Rodin’s bronze version of The Kiss, images from Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series and Renoir’s La Parisienne are among this impressive grouping. Children will enjoy the natural history floor, which spans fourand-a-half-million years of Welsh history. From the National Museum, stroll to Cardiff Castle (cardiffcastle.com). Wales has more castles per square mile than anywhere else, with a recent count of 641. Cardiff Castle stands apart for its impeccable condition and opulent interiors. Originally a Roman fortress, the castle was constructed following the Norman conquest around 1100. In the mid-1800s, it became the property of the Third Marquess of Bute, who hired “art-architect” William Burges to transform the interior to an homage to Gothic splendor. Each room is a work of art, ensconced in gold, carvings and all imaginable—and unimaginable—forms of luxury decor. South of the castle, experience another facet of the city’s history at Cardiff Bay (cardiffbay. co.uk). Sailors from more than 50 countries settled here, and it’s now a hub of tourism and local activity. The café at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre is a picturesque spot to have tea before visiting the architecturally intriguing Senedd, also known as the National Assembly building (assemblywales.org). Cultural highlights include the Wales Millennium Centre (wmc.org. uk), home of the Welsh National Opera.

Cardiff Bay represents a sliver of the Wales Coast Path (walescoastpath.gov.uk), which, at 870 miles, is the world’s longest continual coastal byway. Whether you go by car or foot, travel east to Swansea. Known as Wales’ second city, Swansea feels worlds away from Cardiff, even though you can hop on the M4 and arrive less than an hour later. To explore the beaches of Swansea Bay is to step into the Victorian era, complete with fog-dense horizons and salt-swept bathhouses. Stop by Langland’s Brasserie by the Sea (langlandsbrasserie. co.uk) and savor a traditional Welsh meal of cockles and laverbread—not bread at all but a seaweed puree—as you take in the iridescent ocean view and the rugged Mumbles headland. Sufficiently sun kissed, travel into central Swansea and visit Wales’ biggest covered market. Order a batch of Welsh cakes before heading to central Wales and a drive through Brecon Beacons National Park (brecon beacons.org). Established in 1957, it covers 520 square miles and is composed mostly of palmbeachillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

Old Red Sandstone that forms four regions of hills sliced by river valleys. This area is a wilderness fan’s Eden, perfect for hiking, biking, fishing and kayaking or, for those of simple pleasures, basking in one of the most glorious views in all of the United Kingdom. Brecon Beacons also has many small towns, all of which have their own identities and attractions. In Crickhowell, indulge in the British country-scape and stay at the Gliffaes Country House Hotel (gliffaes hotel.com), a nineteenth-century estate with a Downton Abbey aura. Drive on to Abergavenny, the gastronomic capital of Wales with a foodie scene that includes an annual festival and the lauded Hardwick Restaurant (thehardwick. co.uk), before continuing on to Llanthony. Here, you’ll discover the treasure that is Llanthony Priory, a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery. Today, half of the estate stands in stunning ruins and the other has been converted to a hotel (llanthonyprioryhotel.co.uk). Lastly, visit Hay-on-Wye (hay-on-wye.co.uk), the secondhand book capital of the world. A must for bibliophiles, Hay-on-Wye has charm to spare, with narrow, cobbled streets and 39 bookstores. If you miss the annual literary festival in May, don’t fret—simply spend the afternoon browsing books before tapping off the evening with a pint at The Blue Boar. When your Wales adventure comes to a close and England beckons, there are many routes from which to choose. Opt to leave through Chepstow, tucked along the River Wye, and enter into Gloucester. Cross the river by bridge and, with Chepstow Castle at your back and England at your feet, start planning your next visit. (visitwales.com) «

AMERICAN BEAUTY

Ferrari is building just 10 of its glorious F60 America roadsters for U.S. collectors. Even at $2.5 million apiece, they’re all sold. By Howard Walker 66

Money, so the old adage goes, can buy anything. But even if you had a spare $2.5 million, you couldn’t buy Ferrari’s latest creation, the F60 America. That’s because only 10 of these 730-horsepower V-12-engined superroadsters are being built. And even before the car was unveiled at a swanky party on Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive in October, they’d all been sold—gone, literally, in 60 seconds. There had been no advertising, no test drives, no sales pressure. Just a whispered phone call suggesting the buyer might want to have his Gulfstream whisk him to Italy to take a look at something very special. Discretion is key: Buyers are chosen by Ferrari for their unlikeliness to instantly sell the car for what would be a guaranteed humongous profit. Expect to see the names of drivers who have been quietly collecting Maranello’s finest for decades, like Ralph Lauren, Walmart heir Rob Walton, Wall Street investor James Glickenhaus and former Microsoft Corp. President Jon Shirley, whose 1954 Ferrari 375MM Scaglietti took the coveted Best in Show title at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

What will they get for their rumored $2.5 million investment? Rarity. To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of delivering its first cars to the United States, Ferrari has created a bespoke convertible version of its thundering F12 Berlinetta grand touring coupe. History is repeating itself. In 1967, original U.S. Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti cajoled Enzo Ferrari into creating an open-top version of the 275 GTB4 coupe for his convertible-loving U.S. clients. Girl

From her name to her spirit, Ariana Rockefeller epitomizes American royalty. But she also is intent on forging her own legacy.

Ariana Rockefeller is a gorgeous enigma wrapped in a sophisticated anomaly. She’s as comfortable in a T-shirt and flats as she is in a fringed Stella McCartney gown. She feels just as at home astride her horse as she does sitting on the board of her grandfather’s charity. She adores the bustle of New York but devours the relaxed vibe of Palm Beach. “I’m just kind of a simple girl,” she says, her signature giant smile beaming. At 32 years old, the great-great granddaughter of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller at once honors her family’s heritage and works to forge her own legacy. “For members of my family, it’s very important that we have something to call our own,” she says. “Ariana has actually spent most of her life building a body of experience totally her own,” says friend and Palm Beach resident Elisabeth Munder. “She worked at the United Nations, did oceanographic research in Brazil and is generally much more interested in finding challenging experiences than resting on her family’s laurels.” A few other items that fit that bill: her palmbeachillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

horse-riding dedication and accomplishments, her burgeoning clothing line and her strong sense of charitable responsibility. Though a fan of the island, Ariana spends most of her time in Palm Beach County in Wellington. No surprise there—she’s been riding since she was a toddler. “For me, it’s all about learning,” she says. “I put my horse first.” Her current horse, Chogun II— whose name emblazes the bracelet resting on her wrist—accompanied her to Wellington last year for four months to participate in the show-jumping circuit of the Winter Equestrian Festival. “I found my niche in show jumping specifically,” she says. “As I progress, I’ll jump higher and, one day, I would love to do a Grand Prix.” The first glimpse of Ariana’s innate humility comes when she talks about her horse. A gift from her grandfather, 99-year-old David Rockefeller, Chogun II has become a tried-and-true companion. “You have to have a partner in your horse,” she says. “It’s so incredibly humbling, because they don’t care how expensive your saddle is or where you come from.” When not in Wellington, Ariana rides at the Old Salem Farm in North Salem, New York five to six times a week. “I am mostly in riding clothes. I usually show up in the garment center still in my gross riding pants,” she shares with a smirk. Beyond her day-to-day garb, her equestrian passion finds its way into her clothing design in the form of prints and the line’s overall sensibility and ease. Similar to her recent exploration of show jumping, Ariana has found her footing in the fashion world by focusing on her keenly American aesthet-

ic. “There are so many ways you can find your niche in the horse world, just like in the fashion world,” she says. As a young girl, Ariana was as obsessed with fashion as she was with horses. “I was always interested in aesthetics and details and the way things were presented and put together,” she says. She would pay close attention to the lovely clothing her parents’ friends wore and tediously plan her own themes and looks for different seasons. In 2011, following a graduation from Columbia University, a marriage to Matthew Bucklin and a brief move to Los Angeles, Ariana finally took the leap and established her eponymous clothing line. “I’d been trying to talk her into it for a long time,” Bucklin confides. “I was happy when she finally decided to do it.” Inspired by her carefree-chic style, Ariana’s line embodies the classic Americana lifestyle she leads. “The way I design clothing is very much my style,” she says. For her first capsule collection, she focused on pieces she and her friends would want in their own closets. “That’s the amazing part about being a designer—you get to design things that you’ve dreamed of,” she says. “Ariana’s personal style is effortless Americana,” Munder says. “Classic but never staid, she infuses simple styles with glamour and a dose of high fashion.” “Ariana knows what she likes; there’s never a question,” adds Rob Younkers, design director of her brand. “So many designers look to this American lifestyle, and they’re influenced by it. But who better to design it than the girl who lived it?” Every aspect of Ariana’s collection is affected by her

upbringing. “She’s got this amazing family heritage—how could it not inspire you?” Younkers asks. Begin with her prints, all of which are custom created and have become the catalyst for her design process. One of her family’s Picasso paintings inspired a chevron print used in her first collection. “It was really about that print but also those primary colors and those rich tones that really always affected me and inspired me,” she says. Art, after all, is an intricate part of her family’s heritage. Ariana studied visual art in college, and her great-grandmother Abby Aldrich Rockefeller helped establish the Museum of Modern Art in 1929 with her personal collection as the base. Even though she never met Abby, Ariana closely relates to her. “I have a little of my great-grandmother’s adventure in me,” she says. “She definitely walked off the beaten path, and I’m a little bit the same way.” By honoring her family’s love of the arts in her fashion line, Ariana hopes she is carving out her own space in the Rockefeller legacy. “In my own small way, I am pursing my dream and giving something creative back,” she says. “My clothing line is my version of that.” When it comes to philanthropic giving, Ariana believes it is part of her familial and civic duty to help those less fortunate. “The motto in my family is, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected,’” she says. “It’s important to never take things for granted and always try and find ways to make things better for everyone. And that’s part of the American heritage that I’m a part of.” She is involved with the ASPCA and

In addition, she sits on the board of directors of her grandfather’s charity, the David Rockefeller Fund. Established in 1989, the fund focuses on four areas: the arts, criminal justice, the environment and community. “It’s all about community service,” Ariana says. “It really helps [me] learn more about philanthropic giving.” A tradition of philanthropy is just one aspect of the family history with which Ariana is proud to be associated. For her, however, the Rockefeller name is not defined by one person, one endeavor or one field, but by her family’s role in perpetuating the American dream. “My great-great grandfather saw the American dream,” she says. “You see something and you work hard, and you see a place where you can contribute great things and make a lot of money—that literally is the American dream. From that, the rest of my family worked to give back and create these amazing institutions and hospitals, all for the benefit of society. I’m so proud to be a part of that.” For this American heiress, it’s not about separating herself from her name and family legacy but making that legacy her own. A famous last name “can make people have expectations or judgments,” she admits, “but I think that’s shaped me in terms of really needing to be confident in who I am. Yes, I have my last name, but I’m also a lot of other things.” Indeed she is—equestrian, philanthropist, designer, traveler, wife, friend and, yes, Rockefeller. «

Reasons For Sentimental

Nat King Cole and JFK had a historic relationship. This month, the crooner’s daughters revive those rare moments.

A family photo of Nat King Cole (far right) with then-Senator John F. Kennedy during a dinner for the politician’s reelection, circa 1958. The silver box was a memento from the Kennedy Foundation Dinner in 1964. It is inscribed: “Nat King Cole, The Best Friend a Song Ever Had.”

he Honey Fitz Presidential Yacht was said to be one of the few places where President John F. Kennedy Jr. was at his happiest and most relaxed. Vintage pictures and home movies tell the story best. There’s the photo of a sun-kissed and windblown Kennedy reading The New York Times and smoking a cigar on the boat’s deck. There’s the doting image of the president snuggling his young daughter, Caroline, who’s wrapped in a blanket and resting her head on his chest on a breezy afternoon. And finally, there’s the home video of children skipping and playing around the boat as adult laughter fills the background. Although five U.S. presidents used the Honey Fitz, it is the Kennedy family who gave it its timeless allure, whether it was in the waters of the Potomac River or the Intracoastal Waterway here in Palm Beach. But its Camelot-era charm was nearly lost to history until two years ago, when its current owner decided to restore the boat to its former glory. Now, the storied presidential watercraft is available for private functions such as the Nat King Cole Generation Hope President’s Society Dinner and Auction that will take place at The Sailfish Club in Palm Beach on December 4. “When I heard the yacht was being restored and would be available for charity events, I had to look into it,” says Casey Cole Hooker, who cofounded Generation Hope in 2008 with her twin sister, Timolin Cole Augustus. “We were very fortunate to be able to host this event there.” The exclusive event will begin with a cocktail reception and tour of the Honey Fitz, where guests will see rare presidential memorabilia such as photographs, correspondence, a desk Kennedy used while on the boat

and a burgee flag from the Eisenhower era. The Cole family will also be sharing never-before-seen heirlooms from their own past, including Nat King Cole’s wedding photographs, correspondence with notables such as Kennedy and several awards. The reception will be followed by an intimate dinner and an auction. Although the auction items had not been finalized at press time, the Cole sisters said they would at least include one trip and family memorabilia. All of the proceeds from the evening will benefit Generation Hope’s music education programs in underprivileged schools. “As his children, this takes us back to a special time that will never be lived or seen again,” Hooker says. “It was difficult to look at some of these items and realize that it’s what’s left of our legacy and our parents.” Timolin adds: “But our parents would love this and support it wholeheartedly. They would love that this is going to a wonderful cause.”

Although there are legions of rumors about the celebrities who may have set foot on the boat during Kennedy’s time, it is unknown whether Nat King Cole ever visited the president on the vessel. The boat’s current captain, Paul Ocepek, says to his knowledge, the boat kept no guest logs, so anything current staff members know about the boat is gleaned from old photographs given by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston or knowledge from the yacht’s former staffers. What is certain is Nat King Cole was a prominent supporter of Kennedy’s senatorial and presidential bids, and the young politician from Massachusetts was always grateful for that backing, especially given the racial unrest in the 1960s. “The letters we will display on the boat from President Kennedy to our father show appreciation for his support during a sensitive time when African Americans couldn’t be seated with white Americans in a restaurant,” Hooker says. “Politically, the breakthrough in their relationship was special.” Casey and Timolin’s older sister, Carole, of-

ten told a story about the time Kennedy, who was then a senatorial candidate, showed up for her cotillion ball. “It made the cover of Ebony,” Hooker says, adding the magazine will be displayed on the boat December 4. “My sister was 17 years old then, and the article talks about how she looked up at my mother when Kennedy walked in and their mouths were agape because it was such a surprise. Kennedy realized the lengths my father had to go to in order to show up and support him in light of the time. So he thanked my father by showing up at my sister’s cotillion. That was pretty amazing.” Ocepek, a Palm Beach native who was hired by Honey Fitz’s owners three years ago, says he is constantly educating himself about the boat’s lore. “Last year, the man who captained the boat for JFK gave me a Xeroxed copy of the personal scrapbook from the three or four years he spent at the helm,” Ocepek says. “What I learned from him was just how family-oriented President Kennedy was and how much this boat meant to him as a getaway and a place where he could feel peace and enjoy time with his family and friends.” Among the things Ocepek says Kennedy enjoyed on the boat: a cocktail called the Bullshot,

The young politician from Massachusetts was grateful for Nat King Cole’s backing, given the racial unrest of the 1960s. which was a shaken mixture of 1½ ounce of vodka, 3 ounces of chilled beef bouillon and dashes of Worcestershire, Tabasco, salt and pepper to taste. The president also smoked four to five cigars a day, usually an exclusive brand such as H. Upmann, which was made in Havana and therefore harder to procure after 1962, when Kennedy signed the Cuban Trade Embargo. “Kennedy spent more time on this boat than any other president,” Ocepek says. “It was a floating White House and family getaway where he could relax and the kids could be kids. So when guests come aboard the boat today, they’re almost a little bit shy and really try to be gentle with everything because of its rich history.” The boat was originally commissioned in 1931 by businessman Sewell Avery, who 94

was enlisted by J.P. Morgan and Co. during the Great Depression to return the Montgomery Ward department store chain to profitability. Avery loved sailing and sought a large craft on which he could cruise the waters of Lake Michigan in his spare time. Defoe Motor Works fulfilled his dream with a 93-foot-long boat hewn from military-grade fir and white oak that the financier named after his daughter, Lenore. “When Avery first built the boat, it had 1,000-horsepower engines and could travel at speeds of 26 knots, which is fast even by today’s standards,” Ocepek says. The boat also had a salon, upper sun decks, a formal dining room that sat eight, a master stateroom, a galley, crew quarters and bathrooms.

The cole family will share neverbefore-seen heirlooms, including wedding photos and correspondence with president kennedy.

The federal government requisitioned the boat in 1942 for use in the war effort, and its high-performance engines were replaced with ones that slowed its speed to 10 knots. After the war, the boat became a presidential yacht under President Harry S. Truman. The only change made to it at that time was the addition of a second salon in the rear of the boat. “Mechanically and structurally, it’s still pretty much the same boat,” Ocepek says, adding he and his crew handle 90 percent of the maintenance, from painting to varnishing the mahogany and teak brightwork. “There’s no hydraulic steering and no autopilot. The operation is vintage 1931. People are fascinated by that, about how in this modern era of technology, you have this vintage equipment that works great.” «

December is local foodies’ favorite time of the year for one big reason: the Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival. Now in its eighth year and taking place December 11-14, the festival unites culinary stars like Robert Irvine and Marc Murphy with some of Palm Beach’s best chefs for exclusive experiences throughout the county, such as private dinners, kids’ cooking classes and the annual grand tasting and chef competition at 150 Worth. Two of this year’s events we don’t want to miss: Watch Sandwich King Jeff Mauro belt out karaoke December 12 at Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach in Manalapan (he can cook and sing?), then return the next night for a street-food competition hosted by Marc Summers that pits a team of Miami chefs against Palm Beach favorites Clay Conley, Tim Lipman, Lindsay Autry, Darryl Moiles and Dean Max. Who will win? (561-389-1222, pbfoodwinefest.com) —Jennifer Pfaff

Comfort Food

5 Dives We

Finding comfort food is easy; the trick is to locate a place that never stopped serving it. These five eateries combine atmosphere and value with classic home-cooked goodness. —Mark Spivak

Howley’s

The Green Owl Restaurant, Delray Beach: Founded in 1981, the Owl has survived long after many trendy restaurants have come and gone. The secret? Large portions of high-quality food at prices that make you think you’re back in 1981. Plan your visit carefully, because the Owl closes at 3 p.m. on weekdays and at noon on Sundays. Eat at a table or the old-fashioned counter, occupy your time while waiting for your order by counting the owls (there are nearly 300 of them) and don’t gossip— the motto is, “What happens at The Green Owl goes all over Delray.” (561272-7766)

Howley’s Restaurant, West Palm Beach: This restored, vintage diner was opened by Patrick Howley in 1950 and now offers something for everyone. Meatloaf and fried chicken coexist on the menu alongside seared ahi tuna, and breakfast is served all day. The local mantra: “Cooked in sight, must be right.” (561-833-5691)

Scully’s (also right)

Scully’s Restaurant, Boynton Beach: Kid-friendly, dogfriendly, indoor or outdoor seating, open from dawn until late in the evening, nightly prime rib, affordable prices—what’s not to like about Scully’s? If nothing else, drop by for a Scullyburger: seven ounces of freshly ground beef served with fries, cole slaw, pickle, lettuce, tomato and onion, starting at $6.99. (561-733-4782, scullysrestaurant.com) Gun Club Café salad

Gun Club Café, West Palm Beach: Located down the street from the county jail, this self-described “American diner with a Southern flair” has been serving sizable breakfasts, homemade soups and chili, and overstuffed sandwiches to a loyal clientele for nearly a quarter-century, and you won’t find anything on the menu for more than $10. Finish with a piece of freshly baked pie. (561-471-0879, gunclubcafe.com)

Green’s Pharmacy and Luncheonette, Palm Beach: If you doubt Palm Beach is a small town at heart, cross the threshold of Green’s. The place looks pretty much the way it did in 1938: a combination of formica counters and booths, an active milkshake machine and a room full of what used to be described as “sundries.” One bite will tell you why JFK used to sneak away from his Secret Service detail for a burger, fries and shake. (561-832-0304)

Local goods Finding artisanal products created locally is always a treat—and they also make fitting holiday gifts for foodies. Stock up on four of our favorites, found at area green markets, coffee shops and other outposts. —J.P. 1. Heat seekers can test their threshold with Bruce’s Ghost Pepperz products, made from the bhut jolokia, or ghost pepper—one of the hottest chili peppers on the planet. Based in Wellington, Bruce’s creates (very) hot sauces, spice rubs, jam, a spicy Bloody Mary mix and more. (561-309-3719, bruces ghostpepperz.com) 2. Also in Wellington, Anna’s Italian Biscotti is hand baked in small batches using no preservatives or artificial flavors. Can’t decide what to try? Sign up for the Biscotti of the Month club. (561-714-4106, annas italianbiscotti.com) 3. Even kids love Alyssa’s Healthy Cookies, whose oatmeal, almond and gluten-free baked goods are made in Jupiter. (561-4012873, alyssascookies.com) 4. A favorite among rawfood devotees, Chunkie Dunkies’ treats out of Riviera Beach are organic, vegan and free of dairy and gluten. (610-5743362, chunkiedunkies.com)

“Grown-Up” cookies and milk: brown-butter chocolate-chunk cookies with a Bailey’s milk shake

Baking at Buccan In the spring, Buccan stealthily hired its first pastry chef, Antonia Grandberry. In the months since, Grandberry has slowly incorporated her unique style of cooking into the Palm Beach restaurant—a butterscotch carrot cake here, a bourbon sundae there—until taking command of the pastry kitchen this fall. With Southern roots and a willingness to push the boundaries of flavor profiles, Grandberry is creating an array of desserts that tiptoe the line between Southern classics and haute cuisine, encouraging diners to loosen their belts and request the dessert menu. We caught up with Grandberry in Buccan’s kitchen to see what’s baking this season. (561-833-3450, buccanpalmbeach.com) —Stephen Brown PBI: What ingredients can we look forward to this season? Grandberry: I tend to gravitate toward pumpkin, spic-

es (nutmeg and cinnamon), apples, pears, caramel and hazelnut— and I love Southern inGet Grandberry’s gredients like pecans and bourbon. Any recipe for bourbon-bacon way I can incorporate crackerjack at palmbeach illustrated.com/grandberry those into my desserts, I’m all for it. What baking tips do you have for home cooks? Never use margarine—use unsalted butter, not salted, and always use pure vanilla extract. If you’re making something from scratch, use the best ingredients you can find; don’t cut corners to save money. And you really want to use full fat—buttermilk is little more expensive, but it is worth it to spend the extra money and extra time.

Cocktail Corner Spiked Eggnog

George Washington drank an eggnog libation frequently, although his version was closer to rocket fuel than a convivial cocktail. For the ambitious DIY home mixologist, here’s a modified version of our first president’s recipe found in the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Start the process early in the month, because the eggnog has to rest one week for maximum flavor. —M.S.

Ingredients 1 pint brandy B/c pint rye whiskey B/c pint Jamaica rum B/e pint sherry 1 dozen eggs 12 tbsp. sugar 1 quart milk 1 quart cream Mix liquor ingredients. Separate yolks and whites of eggs. 6 Alternative New Year’s Eve Bubbles When it’s time to let the cork fly December 31, think before you pop. While Dom Pérignon and Roederer are go-to bubblies, why not end the year with something new? (561-833-3605, theblindmonk.com) —J.P. If you always order dessert: Enjoy Moët and Chandon, one of the sweeter Champagne varieties. If you avoid mainstream trends: Sip on Billecart-Salmon, a Champagne estate producer with an earthy flavor. If you’re a foodie: Pour a glass of Cava, which has brighter acidity and pairs well with different foods. If you like Prosecco: Have you tried Sommariva? Hunt says it’s not as sweet as typical Prosecco and has an overall minerality. If you’re holding a stein: Order a bière de Champagne, which is a beer that has undergone the champenoise fermentation process, the method to produce Champagne. If you prefer mixed drinks: Whip up a Champagne cocktail. For the holidays, Hunt suggests the Poinsettia: Champagne with three ounces of cranberry juice and a half-ounce of Cointreau or triple sec orange liqueur.

Pop a Good Year Ring in 2015 with a special treat: a bottle of vintage champers By Mark SPivak

Champagne lovers tend to gravitate toward either end of the spectrum, choosing nonvintage brut or rosé for everyday consumption and the occasional luxury cuvée (Dom Pérignon, Cristal or La Grande Dame) for life’s special moments. Vintage Champagne, somewhere in the middle, frequently gets overlooked. It is true the luxury cuvées are vintage-dated, but beyond those, it’s rare to see enthusiasts popping a bottle of bubbly that contains grapes from a single year.

Far fewer vintage bottles are available, of course, because most of a producer’s grapes will go into making the nonvintage bottling. In addition, most nonvintage offerings are pretty good these days, as they are carefully sourced and blended and acquire depth and balance from the inclusion of reserve wine from older years. Simply put, a vintage year needs to be almost spectacular to be listed on the label. One year that falls into that category is 1990, but vintage bottles from that year are

hard to find. Among other recent vintages, the standouts are 1998 (excellent in both quantity and quality), 2002 and 2003 (notable for their ripeness), 2004 (good balance of fruit and acidity) and 2006 (aromatic, with a great deal of finesse). Given many vintage Champagnes start in the $60 range—compared with $40 to $50 for the nonvintage version—why not treat yourself when you find one that has been carefully stored? Following are some of the notable buys on the market worth seeking out.

CV-Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte

Nicolas Feuillatte: France’s best-selling Champagne is also popular in this country thanks to its remarkable price-to-quality ratio, whether you choose the entrylevel bottle or the declared vintage. The current standout is the 2004 Blanc de Blancs ($60), a wine made exclusively from Chardonnay, filled with bright flavors of lemon, apple and pear. As it ages, this Champagne becomes rich, unctuous and honeyed, infused with flavors of vanilla and bread dough.

The vintage bubbles from Nicolas Feuillatte, the top-selling Champagne in France, are a good value.

The 2002 PiperPiper-Heidsieck: Founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck Rare Heidsieck, Piper is one of the oldest Champagne houses. It would be an is also the best known of the three Heidsieck Champagnes. appropriate pick for a special (The other two are Charles Heidsieck and Heidsieck Monocelebration. pole.) The 2004 Brut ($65) is crisp yet delicate, with refreshing citrus flavors and pinpoint acidity. Even better is the exceptional 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Rare ($180), blended from 17 select vineyard sites and matured for more than seven years in the house’s cellars. Beautifully concentrated, it combines exotic flavors of kiwi and passion fruit with intense minerality and purity.

Moët & Chandon: The world’s leading Champagne brand has a lot to offer in the vintage category. The recently released Grand Vintage 2006 ($70) is fresh and full-bodied, with mouth-watering acidity and flavors of citrus and vanilla paired with a hint of red fruits. The Grand Vintage Rosé 2004 ($85) offers an explosion of fresh raspberry and wild strawberry in the mouth, framed by strong suggestions of tannin. Moët & Chandon, the most popular brand on the planet, offers a number of vintage wines.

Still craving that luxury cuvée? Consider the Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque (formerly known as Fleur de Champagne, or Flower Bottle). The 2002, 2004 and 2006 vintages sell for $150. This is rich, profound Champagne that can accompany a meal, displaying great depth of flavor in its layers of brioche, vanilla and toast. Chardonnay fans will appreciate the ripe, succulent Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 1995 ($170), released after 10 years of cellar aging. And if you are lucky enough to experience the 2000 Dom Pérignon Rosé ($375), filled with haunting flavors of strawberry and red raspberry, you’ll likely remember it to the end of your days. «

Artsy Accents

For this Palm Beach residence, Adelene Keeler Smith juxtaposed sweeps of white with pops of color and metallic accents to create a mood of cool exuberance. “My goal was to infuse timeless tradition with modern [notes] to create an energetic, spirited interior, Smith says. Confetti colors and bold blacks perk up the white fabrics and surfaces. Reflective materials, including silver accents and an acrylic table base, add a touch of glimmer by day or night. The finishing touch is the curated artwork, which grounds the cool interiors with a sophisticated, collected look. Treatment Translated The Spanish language and Latin American culture is an intricate part of South Florida’s communal identity. To address the unique needs of Spanish speakers, the Lucida Treatment Center in Lantana has developed one of the nation’s only multicultural and bilingual substance-abuse and mental-health treatment programs. Comprising a team of Spanish and English speakers, the programs offer individual care that focuses on family and culture as an important component of recovery. The drug-rehabilitation program acknowledges the unique characteristics of Hispanic culture, particularly the role of the family, and includes family members throughout the treatment process. Fitter You

For Boca Raton resident Rick Berks, bringing fitness to the masses has been the focus of his career. After establishing and building the Planet Fitness brand throughout the 1990s, Berks opened his first Youfit Health Club, a fitness haven for workout novices, in 2008. This year, Berks opened his third location in Boca Raton, bringing the national Youfit count to 83. PBI chatted with Berks about the fitness field and how he stays in shape. (888-968-3481, youfit.com) How has Youfit evolved since its inception? In 2008, we didn’t have as wide a variety of equipment, and I think it limited our attractiveness to the fitness user. We were trying to walk a fine line between being geared towards fitness and yet not being that attractive to the bodybuilder. Since then, we’ve realized we can do both. We’ve gone to bigger clubs, we’ve added a much wider variety and array of equipment to keep it interesting and we’ve added group-exercise classes in a lot of our clubs. [Also,] you see a lot of specialty-type workouts, and we’ve started incorporating some of those in our clubs as well. What shifts in the fitness field are you most excited about? The participation of a wider group and array of people is happening as we speak. There are a lot of people who in past years would never have opened the door to a health club [who now] find our clubs much more inviting. They bring their friends, and they don’t feel like they have to go out and buy some pretty outfit—we’re not the muscles and makeup crowd. What are your favorite ways to stay fit? In order to really stay fit, you have to do some combination During the holiday season, sometimes you need a moment of Zen ASAP. Touch Therapy

Following the death of her daughter, Angela, to breast cancer, Delray Beach resident Ronna Levy—a breast-cancer survivor herself—founded Angie’s Spa, a nationwide volunteer organization that provides hospital grants for cancer patients to receive free therapeutic massages. This year, Angie’s Spa is sponsoring six centers, including the Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. A grant of $8,000, awarded in September, will allow the Lynn Cancer Institute to provide massages to men and women receiving chemotherapy, radiation and invasive surgery for all forms of cancer. Easy Raw

Like many professional football players, Hall of Famer Joe Namath experienced his share of concussions and symptoms associated with traumatic brain injuries. Now, Namath is working with Jupiter Medical Center to find new ways to treat TBI at the Joe Namath Neurological Research Center. The center, which opened in the fall, revolves around the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat TBI and its symptoms, which include mental impairment, confusion and slowed response. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy stimulates healing by allowing oxygen to flow into injured areas; this technology is already being used by JMC to treat diabetic wounds and foot ulcers. Namath himself underwent this therapy for six months and saw improvements in brain

The former football star is joining with JMC to raise $10 million so 100 patients can take part in a clinical trial of the therapy, which could affect more than 1.7 million Americans who suffer from TBIs each year. WATCH IT

In September, Apple unveiled the next frontier in personal technology: the Apple Watch. In addition to many communication features, the watch is ideal for tracking health and wellness. Fitness fanatics should opt for the Apple Watch Sport design—one of three models—that comes in either a space gray or silver anodized aluminum case and a flexible sport band. The internal technology allows users to measure daily stats through the Activity and Workout apps. The Activity app tracks calories burned, activity output and how often users stand each day; this data is displayed in a bold graphic, making the information easily digestible. The Workout app provides fitness goals and includes pacing barometers for workouts. In conjunction with the iPhone Fitness app, the watch allows users to visualize data over the long term and set personal goals. The Apple Watch is slated for release in early 2015, and prices start at $349. (800-692-7753, apple.com/watch)

HEART BEAT Though music therapy has gained attention only in the last centu-

ry, music has long been used as a healing agent for physical and mental anguish. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music’s healing influence is mentioned in the writings of Aristotle and Plato, and medical dissertations chronicling the role of music appear as early as the 1700s. Realizing music’s potential in therapeutic settings, Dan Cohen founded the nonprofit organization Music and Memory, which provides Alzheimer’s and dementia patients with personalized playlists on donated iPods. Previously incommunicative patients are able to tap into memories by experiencing music from their childhoods, thereby allowing them to become more present and their families to reconnect through shared experiences. Since handing out his first iPod in 2008, Cohen’s work has touched the lives of elderly patients in care facilities in the United States and Canada, including at MorseLife in West Palm Beach. Looking to get rid of last year’s iPod? Donate it to Music and Memory and give the gift of muDan Cohen with a Music sic. (musicandmemory.org) and Memory Patient

Agenda Kjng of the Castle

The four-time Tony Award-winning musical Camelot gallops into South Florida at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on December 2 and the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce on December 3. Musical duo Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe repurposed the classic tale of chivalry, brotherhood and betrayal for the stage. Will true love prevail in the love triangle among King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot, or will unequivocal passion between two star-crossed lovers dominate the hearts of those involved? Watch as King Arthur’s kind heart and incessant optimism catch up with him and challenge the prosperity of his kingdom. (561-832-7469, kravis.org; 772-461-4884, sunrisetheatre.com) —Jessica Bielak

What’s Black griping about lately? Find out at palmbeachillustrated.com/lewisblack

From politics to social media, just about everything makes Lewis Black angry—and that’s what makes him so funny. Known for his humorous rants and ever-annoyed stage personality, the comedian sheds light on current topics through wisecrack commentary that brings him to the edge of a mental breakdown, every time. Be prepared for him to lose his temper at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on December 13. Tickets start at $39. (561832-7469, kravis.org) —Jennifer Pfaff PBI: What memories do you have from performing in West Palm Beach? LB: Twenty years ago, if not longer, I was the opening act for Ellen DeGeneres at the [now-closed] Carefree Theater. Then I started performing at the Improv downtown, and West Palm Beach went from being some sort of a sleepy town to a city. It boomed—I take full credit. You had a past career as a playwright. Does the theater still play a big part in your life? I spent the last 12-plus years rewriting a play, and [now] it’s being produced all over the country. It’s called One Slight Hitch. It’s a farce and romantic comedy about a young girl on her wedding day. Are you working on any other projects? I’m doing the voice of a character in a new Pixar film coming out in June called Inside Out. It’s really exciting. Pixar has some of the most creative people on Earth. It’s astonishing. Watching them work was like being inside Beethoven’s brain when he was composing a symphony.
