From the Publisher

The holiday season is upon us, bringing a healthy dose of shimmer, sparkle, and shine. As we prepare to send this December issue to press, I am struck by the sheer number of baubles, bangles, and beads that appear on nearly every page. From the spectacular Graff statement pieces adorning our cover model to the gorgeous jewelry feature on page 114, this issue is a veritable feast for the eyes. Jewelry, of course, is more than eye candy. Engagement and wedding rings signify the joining of couples and families. The gift of a unique timepiece or gemstone can make any anniversary, birthday, or holiday all the more special. In my house, jewelry is literally what brought me and my wife together 24 years ago. Before my career in magazines began, I toiled in retail advertising at Jordan Marsh Stores in Boston. My wife, Lauren, was then the merchandise manager for the fine jewelry departments. Conference room small talk over pearl stud earrings sparked a romance that led to 22 years of marriage. Add in some retail consolidation plus her transfer to Burdines in Miami, and our winters are now considerably warmer and sunnier in South Florida. Holiday wishes are also about bringing people together to do good for one another. This season, Palm Beach Illustrated is pleased to join with several area organizations to celebrate milestone events. The Festival of Trees at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens marks its tenth year of captivating decor, on display December 2-14. Then, on December 13, the fifteenth annual Archival Evening to benefit the Historical Society of Palm Beach County will recognize the contributions of Richard and Pat Johnson. If foodie treats are a favored festive pleasure, then attend the tenth anniversary edition of the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival December 8-11. This tasty happening features the Palm Beaches’ top chefs, restaurants, and purveyors, all of which are sure to spice up your seasonal celebrations.

From the Editor

In my 13 years working for Palm Beach Illustrated, I’ve always looked most forward to producing the December issue. The reason is twofold: I’m a sucker for holiday traditions, and I love a good challenge. Let me unpack that second statement. In the magazine business, nothing happens in real time, so editors must compensate for that fact to produce a seasonally relevant issue. For example, I always insist on having a Christmas-at-home story, which poses a dilemma: How—and when—to produce it? One solution would be to shoot it a year earlier at Christmastime and hold it, but we’d lose the freshness factor that makes such stories so compelling. The other solution? Ask someone to deck the halls and host a holiday party in the fall. For years I’ve been opting for the latter and have been pleasantly surprised at how many wonderful hosts and hostesses think this is a good idea. Like others before her, interior designer Angela Reynolds graciously agreed to pull out her Christmas trees and ornaments in the middle of October (it would have been earlier if it weren’t for Hurricane Matthew) and decorate her gorgeous country home in Jupiter Farms. She then planned a holiday menu and transformed her barn into a rustic-chic dinner venue for about a dozen guests. Even on a warm fall night, Angela’s guests were transported to a Scandinavian countryside with such wintry elements as fur, birch branches, white holly berries, handmade pottery dishes, and even faux snow. The scene was positively magical, which surprised no one familiar with Angela’s aesthetic (she has, after all, designed homes for such star clients as Celine Dion and Elin Nordegren). See for yourself in “Country Christmas” on page 96. Another interesting December-issue tradition is the lively debate behind our cover. Since our pages feature all the beauty, warmth, and glamour of the holidays, the cover has to convey all these concepts—and look festive, too. Our fashion editor, Katherine Lande, secures the most elegant eveningwear, including haute couture looks such as the Zuhair Murad caped jumpsuit featured on our cover, and our location (this year the Kravis Center) portrays high-impact drama and opulence. Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing. Our committee was torn between the cover you hold and another, equally dramatic option, and it took 30 minutes of deliberation and a tie-breaker vote to come to a final decision. It takes a lot of thought and effort to give you a December issue worth cherishing— and it’s our privilege to do it. I wish you and your family a season full of love and joyful memories.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, beat shortening and peanut butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Beat in granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda until combined. Beat in egg, milk, and vanilla. Add cocoa powder and flour and combine. Shape dough into 20 balls and place two inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 9-11 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool on cookie sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Place cooled cookies on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave candy coating for two minutes or until melted and smooth, stirring every 30 seconds. Spoon melted coating over each cookie to resemble snow. While coating is still sticky, add a peanut butter cup for a top hat and decorate with sprinkles to create snowman faces. Let stand until set.

SEA-SON’S

Greetings

ROBERT STOLPE

In South Florida, everything is better when done seaside—especially holiday celebrations. In December, these illuminated boat parades will bring merriment and wonder to area waters: Martin and St. Lucie counties, December 3 and 10: The Treasure Coast will add sparkle to the sea with a series of boat parades; participation is free. Martin County residents can view the flotilla December 3 before it makes its way north to St. Lucie County December 10. (772-692-7599, miatc.com) Palm Beach, December 3: This annual parade, presented by the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, will be led by a fireworks display as it travels up the Intracoastal from North Palm Beach to the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. (561-863-0012, palmbeachboatparade.com) Boynton Beach, December 9: Now in its forty-fifth year, the Boynton Beach Holiday Boat Parade presents stunning ships that will float south beginning at the Lantana Bridge. Guests are encouraged to bring a new toy to donate to Toys for Tots. (561243-7250, catchboynton.com) Stuart, December 10: Sponsored by Meridian Marina & Yacht Club and The KC Ingram Show, this holiday happening imbues downtown Stuart with unparalleled energy. Dubbed the Martin County Christmas Boat Parade, the flotilla will take off south of Sandsprit Park and travel up the St. Lucie River. (772-221-8198, meridianmarina.com) Lake Osborne, December 16: One of the newest additions to the scene, this grassroots boat parade began last year and promises to return in 2016 to light up Lake Osborne, located in central Palm Beach County. (facebook. com/lakeosborneboatparade) Boca Raton, December 17: View Boca’s fortieth annual boat parade from bleacher seats at Silver Palm Park or Red Reef Park. Boats will take off at C-15 Canal and will have the opportunity to win $10,000 in cash and prizes. (561-393-7807, myboca.us)

The Boca Raton Holiday Boat Parade is one of the county’s oldest annual holiday events. The 2016 parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. on December 17.

GOLF CLAP Kenny G.’s love of golf extends to Palm Beach County. He is a regular at The Honda Classic and makes an annual sojourn to PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens to support and play in the philanthropic golfing event. Of course, there is a plethora of local spots to get swinging. Here are a few that stand out for all the right reasons: Best Nineteenth Hole: At most golf courses, the nineteenth hole is a place to enjoy cocktails after a good round. But at the private Old Palm golf course, an actual Hole 19 serves as a way to settle contested wagers. Palm Beach Gardens (561-472-5120, oldpalmgolfclub.com) Most Natural: When designing the private Emerald Dunes golf course, Tom Fazio worked with the existing landscape, complementing natural dunes with native grasses and adding paths made from coquina shells. West Palm Beach (561-687-1700, emeralddunesclub.com) Prime Public: One of only two Nicklaus Signature municipal courses in the country, the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course (pictured) at the North Palm Beach Country Club is nestled along the Intracoastal and available for public use. On December 2, Kenny G arrives at the Kravis Center for an evening of contemporary jazz hits and festive holiday music. Kenny G (the “G” stands for Gorelick) picked up the saxophone at age 10 and landed his first professional gig in 1976 as a member of Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. He broke out from behind the music stand to become a thriving solo artist, selling tens of millions of records worldwide. Today, he’s a pop culture icon as famous for his curly locks as he is for his sax skills. Kenny G recently spoke with PBI about his musical style, admired artists, and passion for golf. (561-832-7469, kravis.org) PBI: You’re synonymous with the saxophone. Do you collect the instrument? Kenny G: No, I’m not a collector at all. I have my high school saxophone, my soprano, that I still play. I also have my alto and my tenor, both [of which] I got just out of high school. Those three saxes are the same ones I play everywhere. I do have a couple other saxophones as spares that I found along the way. They presented themselves to me and were of the same era—the 1950s—that my saxophones are from. Also, I have my own saxophone line I created because I thought the design they did back in the ’50s was so good that I wanted to recreate it in a modern way. I sell them at my shows and try to give good prices so that kids can afford them. What did you listen to growing up and how did it influence your style? I listened a lot to R&B music when I was going to high school. I listened to more jazz when I went to college. I think the two styles of music came together somehow. Anybody who has their own style, there’s nothing conscious about it. It just happens because you have a perspective that feels right to you. Later on, you realize, “Oh, wow, it’s very unique.” But I wasn’t really thinking about it like that in the beginning. I was playing in a way that sounded good to me and felt normal. If you could collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Honestly, if I could get Stan Getz to do some music with me I would do it because I could learn a lot from his playing. If I could get John Coltrane to be standing next to me then I could learn a lot from him, too. So if you’re asking me dead or alive, it’s going to be a duet where I’m going to learn a lot. One of your other hobbies is golf. What appeals to you most about the sport? Anybody who gets into golf loves golf. It’s just one of those things where it’s up to you to hit a good shot—and you can. Then the same person can hit a really crappy shot minutes later. And then you hit a great shot. It’s just the quest to repeat something and be great at it. It relates to music in that way. The problem is playing a saxophone is a lot easier than playing golf.

Très Chic Trees

Now in its tenth year, the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ Festival of Trees has become a holiday season must-do. While most Christmas trees boast artificial snowflakes and bejeweled ornaments, the trees at the 2016 festival (December 2-14) will fit the theme of Celebrating Design Through the Decades. “Our goal is to represent as many decades as possible,” says design chair Jennifer Garrigues, who plans to create a Downton Abbey–inspired tree as well as one reminiscent of the Stone Age, complete with antlers, cave paintings, and references to The Flintstones. Guests can also spot trees designed for the disco ’70s, the mod ’60s, and the roaring ’20s. This unique theme was chosen as a complement to the gardens’ current photography exhibition, “Eye on Photography: A Survey of Contemporary Themes,” which depicts the evolution of aesthetics as captured on film. WALK ABOUT Palm Beach’s signature thoroughfare, Worth Avenue, is full of life this time of year. Beginning December 7, the avenue’s remarkable past comes alive with the return of the Historical Walking Tours of Worth Avenue. Led by local historian Rick Rose, the tours take off from 256 Worth Avenue at 11 a.m. every Wednesday through April. They last approximately 75 minutes and cost $10, with net proceeds donated to an area charity. Marley Herring, owner of Marley’s Palm Beach Collection and president of the Worth Avenue Association, describes the tour as a celebration of Worth Avenue’s unique history. “Rick Rose is such a wonderful storyteller that the events almost come to life,” Herring says. “Picture Addison Mizner with Johnnie Brown on his shoulder, the Kennedys walking on Worth Avenue, or the Duke and Duchess of Windsor having cocktails at Ta-bóo.” Think you know Worth Avenue as well as Rose does? Test your own knowledge with these five trivia questions. (561-659-6909, worth-avenue.com) 44 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

GIFT OF ART Finding the perfectly eclectic gift for the art lover in your life can be challenging. The hunt just got easier thanks to the new West Palm Beach Arts Festival, taking place at the Armory Art Center December 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The idea for this inaugural arts bazaar came from the desire to attract more visitors to the modest ceramics sale the Armory used to host each holiday season, explains executive director Tom Pearson. With at least 120 artists scheduled to participate in this festival, Pearson hopes to see a flood of attendees, many of whom will be visiting the Armory for the first time. “Every time I give a tour for someone who has never been here, they’re amazed at our resources and facility,” Pearson says. “People don’t know the depth of what we do here.” In addition to local, national, and international art vendors, the festival will include live music, food trucks, and demonstrations of skills taught at the Armory, such as printmaking, stone carving, and sculpting. Want to give the gift of art instruction? Class registration will be available, too. (561-832-1776, westpalmbeachartsfestival.com) Armory Art Center

efore the musical Hamilton came to Broadway, few people had heard of Nevis. For years, the volcanic Caribbean island had kept a blissfully low profile, known only to a few discerning travelers who, quite frankly, preferred to keep it all to themselves. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote Hamilton and starred in the title role, has brought Nevis, Alexander Hamilton’s birthplace, into the spotlight. Miranda spent extensive time on the island researching its most famous native son and gathering inspiration for the work. It’s hard not to be inspired by Nevis. The 36-square-mile isle comprises one-half of a nation—the other half is St. Kitts—in the Leeward chain of the West Indies and is marked

by its prominent volcano, Nevis Peak, which almost always sits beneath a halo of clouds. The volcanic soil renders the island fertile, so color explodes on the sloping hillsides. Springs dot the landscape, further branding Nevis as the quintessential tropical idyll. It’s the kind of place in which you want to get lost and play out a modern Cast Away fantasy. But why do that when you can stay at a Four Seasons (fourseasons.com/nevis)? The resort proper has been around since 1991 and its charming cottages are beloved by patrons who’ve been coming to the island for years. But those who desire a more exclusive, private experience head straight for the new Villas at Pinney’s Beach, developed by Four Seasons Resort Estates (fsrenevis.com). The three- and four-bedroom villas are

ideal homes away from home, complete with high-end finishes, floor-to-ceiling windows, vaulted ceilings, modern furnishings, and private plunge pools. The plan is equally suited to relaxing and entertaining: The great room, kitchen, and pool area are separated from the two-story bedroom wing by a courtyard. The feeling is residential, down to the golf cart parked in the driveway and reserved for guests’ use. The villas are situated along the golf course and in the shadow of Nevis Peak. Though it seems counterintuitive to not have a beach view, the emerald world beyond the private deck is nuanced with tropical breezes and sunset vistas that more than make up for the lack of sand between your toes. Farther up the hills is a collection of privately owned island homes in the FSRE portfolio, most of which are offered as vacation rentals. This is, perhaps, the ultimate luxury, as these multimillion-dollar estates offer

For most travelers to Nevis, it’s easier to fly into St. Kitts and take a launch to the island. To make the process easier, Four Seasons has partnered with YU Lounge, a chic terminal akin to a private-aviation or first-class lounge. YU allows guests to sail through immigration and wait for transfers in comfort while enjoying a glass of Champagne and light bites. (yulounge.com)

everything a second home does: massive square footage, smarthome features, lush landscaping, pools, and entertaining areas overlooking sprawling hillside and water views. If you happen to fall in love with the lifestyle, FSRE offers several ownership options as well. Villas and estates have the added benefit of Four Seasons housekeeping and resort privileges, such as dining and spa. An enclave of gingerbread cottages, the spa is tucked inside a secret garden that immediately encourages a relaxed vibe. After a treatment (we recommend the Nature’s Getaway, which includes a coconut scrub, a prickle pear wrap, and a warm ginger oil massage) and a long soak in the volcanic stone Jacuzzi, lunch is served alfresco amid verdant surroundings. The spa menu of bento boxes and fresh juices is the perfect mix of delicious and virtuous. The Four Seasons offers several dining experiences worth indulging in, including the beachfront Mango that recalls Saint-Tropez PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2016

chic, but the one that can’t be missed is Dive and Dine. During lobster season, scuba-certified guests are encouraged to dive for their own dinner. Nothing tastes finer than a lobster caught earlier that day with the guidance of a Nevisian dive master who truly knows the local waters and grilled to perfection by a Four Seasons chef. Another dining must is Sunshine’s (sunshinesnevis.com). This locally owned, beachside eatery claims to have the best food on the island, and that’s not an exaggeration. Start with a Killer Bee (emphasis on killer), Sunshine’s famous rum punch, and progress to a familystyle dinner with garden salads, barbecued chicken, and the freshest fish, marinated and simply grilled. The vibe is totally relaxed and hyperlocal, and you never know when you might spot a celebrity in the considerable crowd. If Alexander Hamilton is Nevis’ most noteworthy figure, Sunny (short for Sunshine) is probably the most colorful. Sunny and his team surely gave rise to the term “Nevis nice,” which truly describes the attitude throughout this gem of an island. «

The Lodge at Glendorn offers cozy accommodations nestled on 1,500 acres, where guests can enjoy outdoor pursuits like curling, crosscountry skiing, or happy hour around the campfire.

Winter Enchantment This year, skip your favorite ski resort and veer off the beaten path to discover one of North America’s secret winter wonderlands: The Lodge at Glendorn. This luxurious, Relais & Châteaux–pedigree lodge encompasses a whopping 1,500 woodsy acres on the outskirts of Allegheny National Forest (nestled near the New York/Pennsylvania border, 90 minutes south of Buffalo), functioning as a self-contained, activities-driven destination exclusive to 16 cabins and suites. The family estate dates to 1927, when oil titan Clayton Glenville Dorn and his son, Forest, built a single, log and plank–sided cabin overlooking trout-rich Fuller Brook stream. As the Dorn family expanded, new generations built their own sequoia-wood cabins over the vast acreage, each with a design reflective of its respective decade. Now, 16 units (and a fabulous, full-service spa) later, this collection of multigenerational accommodations has been transformed into an upscale resort that tells the story of a single family’s history. Cozy cabins are just one part of the modern-day Glendorn narrative. Outdoor pursuits also play a central role, with 18 miles of hiking paths, 4.5 miles of privately owned banks for fly-fishing, and unspoiled surrounds that transform into one massive, snow-blanketed playground come mid-December. As the foot trails transition to extensive networks 74

for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and snowmobiling, the frozen lakes solidify as ice-skating rinks, sporting grounds for curling, and fields for ice fishing. Glendorn is a fantastic four-season destination and, as such, other activities like skeet shooting, sporting clays, and nature tours by jeep are offered year-round. But it is extra special during winter. Whether recharging with hot chocolate, cookies, and hot toddies in one of the estate’s warming cabins, telling stories in the snow around a bonfire, or coming together as a family each evening to discuss the day’s icy adventures over lavish, multicourse meals, Glendorn is the place to pen an unforgettable chapter in your own family’s history. Some Like it Hot

With its heat-reflecting seats, the 2017 MercedesBenz SL550 roadster is one cool customer By Howard Walker Remember that scene in the 1979 romantic comedy 10? You know the one I’m talking about: A love-struck Dudley Moore hops across the beach toward a cornrow-braided Bo Derek, barbecuing the soles of his feet on the hot sand in the process. For me, the automotive equivalent is sliding into the leather seat of a convertible that’s been left—top down—stewing in the midday Florida sun. Especially if you happen to be wearing shorts. There are no expletives to adequately express the pain of fricasseed thigh flesh. And grabbing hold of the wheel to provide leverage to extract yourself doesn’t help, not when it’s also as hot as the inside of a lava-spewing Mount Etna. This all-too-common experience is why I’m nominating the 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL550 as the Official Convertible of the Sunshine State. How come? Its hip-caressing seats and thick helm feature heatreflecting leather designed to stay cool when broiled from above.

Apparently, there’s a special pigment added when the hides are being treated that can reflect infrared rays, keeping the leather cooler by as much as 36 degrees. That’s a lot. Think of it as SPF50 for your upholstery. But does it work? You bet. I tested the SL in sweltering conditions, leaving it out in 90-degree heat while I sat inside an air-conditioned Starbucks. When I returned, I braced myself for the inevitable scalding, but while the leather was toasty, it was definitely manageable. After five minutes with the ventilated seats on max, all was pleasant. This solar-resisting leather technology isn’t new, but it’s just one of a million reasons this new-look SL deserves a place in your driveway. The “new look” is the key feature of this latest iteration of Mercedes’ evergreen roadster, now entering its sixty-fourth year of continuous production. For 2017, the Mercedes stylists changed pretty much everything

Designer Angela Reynolds hosts an elegant holiday party in her enchanting farmhouse

COUNTRY

CHRISTMAS 2

BY LINDA MARX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JERRY RABINOWITZ

96

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Growing up between Palm Beach and Richmond, Virginia, interior designer Angela Reynolds experienced the best of both worlds when entertaining for the holidays. In Palm Beach, Christmas was informal and casually chic. Richmond, on the other hand, was formal and sophisticated, with dinners presented on a 14-foot Georgian table dressed with Baccarat crystal and treasured antique flatware. “My mother and I loved to put on beautiful holiday parties, but [our entertaining] was a dichotomy,” says Reynolds, who now lives in a 3,400-square-foot farmhouse in Jupiter Farms with her children, Chloe and Oliver. “I like both styles of entertaining, but I am more of an informal person.” Reynolds honed her knack for decor at Inchbald School of Design in London. She remained in the city to open a design studio and antiques business on New Kings Road before returning to the United States to live and work in Palm Beach County.

Among other high-profile clients, Reynolds has designed the Jupiter Island home of singer Celine Dion (“down to everything including toothbrushes”) and the Juno Beach home of Elin Nordegren, Tiger Woods’ ex-wife and a noted philanthropist. Her design work includes decorating her clients’ homes for the holidays, and she strives to create surroundings that suit their preferences. When it comes to her own home, Reynolds favors vintage-chic elements such as Christmas trees aglow in white and silver ornaments. “I like to keep a chic and elegant vibe with lots of white, silver, and crystal, so everything looks magical,” she says. Reynolds calls her own “fabulously imperfect white farmhouse with a sweeping porch” a great space for a Christmas party. With snowy white oak floors and expansive windows offering an abundance of light, the home was a brilliant backdrop for Reynolds’ most recent holiday dinner party. Guests arrived in the twilight hours, entering the rustic property via a stone pathway that evoked a mid-century Christmas card, complete with miniature trees, glowing wood lanterns, and a vintage truck overflowing with festive red gift boxes. The magic continued in the house, where the living room sparkled like a snow globe. Reynolds nestled a ninefoot tree alongside a fur throw and decorated with white, silver, crystal, and mercury-glass ornaments from Pottery Barn. She finished the picture by placing candles inside the Calacatta marble fireplace and surrounding it with lanterns. Guests took note of the attention to detail and warm ambiance. “The decorations are so luxurious, making me want to touch them because they are pretty, soft, and romantic,” jewelry designer Stephanie Kantis remarked as she walked through the room. Local culinarian Maude Eaton, owner of For the Love of Food, served as chef for the evening, welcoming revelers with Champagne and a selection of appetizers, including prosciutto di parma with gorgonzola and baked flatbread, Turkish honey served over goat cheese with edible flowers, and warm Mediterranean olives. While most hosts view the kitchen as a place of preparation, Reynolds sees it as an extension of the celebration. The home’s original one was too small, so Reynolds got creative. She knocked down a few walls, made the old kitchen the new family room, and turned two former communal areas into her culinary playground. The resulting open floor plan supports Reynold’s casual entertaining style and allows her visitors to share in the cooking and dining experience. At this holiday happening, guests chatted and milled around

Interior designer Angela Reynolds invited friends into her Jupiter Farms home, outfitted in country-chic Christmas decor, to enjoy a laidback holiday dinner. Maude Eaton provided the evening’s eats, which began with crudites, cheeses, and prosciutto di parma served in the kitchen and family room amid a glittering holiday village.

A vintage truck, dressed with greenery and holiday packages, set the mood.

The evening started in the family room (right) before guests were ushered to the barn for dinner. The table setting (opposite page) included reynolds’ own antique silverware, custom salad plates by Sara Lerner, Moser stemware, and additional plates and silverware from Pottery Barn.

“I collect Christmas accessories and my children absolutely love the holidays,” says Reynolds. the family room and kitchen, both decorated with a Christmas village accented with snow, penguins, reindeer, and more lanterns. The spirited scene combined the look of an elegant country inn with a convivial atmosphere. “I collect Christmas accessories and my children absolutely love the holidays,” says Reynolds, who chose a smart pleated red knit Ferragamo dress with mink and black suede Ferragamo heels for the evening. “The open look of the kitchen is my specialty even though I am not much of a cook. I love to have my guests circulating around while Maude works her food magic.” Eaton enjoyed her tasks and even joked that she and Reynolds can read each oth-

er’s minds. “It took 15 minutes to create our Mediterranean-inspired menu,” she said at the party. “Angela and I have the same ideas [and] we like to please people. I bring an elaborate menu to the table with ease and joy.” For dinner, guests were escorted to the barn, located down a short walkway illuminated with dozens of candles. Inside, the decorations recalled a winter wonderland with snow drifts set against birch branches, antique jewelry, more candles, and garlands Reynolds created with greenery, magnolia branches, and white holly. “It is such a picture of effortless glamour,” guest Marla Degraeve said of the tableau. “The decorations are subtle and refined.” A large rust and silver chandelier— outfitted with crystal threads and fleece hearts—illuminated the reclaimed barn wood table, which was appointed with a metallic runner from Donghia. Reynolds’ talents extend to floral displays, so she constructed a romantic arrangement with white roses and sprigs of winter berries. The setting featured a mix of contemporary pieces with Reynolds’ own antique silverware. Colorful custom salad plates from local ceramicist Sara Lerner and Moser stemware from the Mozart Collection rounded out the unique table. Eaton commenced the dining with foie gras brûlée and brioche accompanied by

a vichyssoise with lemon zest and chive essence and a radicchio and sorrel salad with a blood-orange vinaigrette, served with velvety Amarone wine. The main course was cast iron–roasted rack of lamb with pomegranate molasses; roasted heirloom beets, carrots, and baby potatoes dressed with a white balsamic reduction; a Persian cucumber yogurt salad with dill and mint; and saffron-scented couscous with pistachios and dried cherries. The guests loved the food and praised the hostess while Reynolds gave credit to the chef. “Maude takes food and makes it her own,” Reynolds said before the duo presented a white coconut cake from Sweet Endings and vanilla bean macarons with silver dragées by Patrick Lézé. As the evening came to a close, Reynolds’ friends thanked her for a wonderful Christmas party filled with fine food and a positive energy. “Whenever I come to Angela’s home, she makes everyone feel so welcome with her warmth and personality,” said guest Peter Robbins. That night, as with all her parties, Reynolds accepted the accolades as a sign of a job well done and friends made happy. “I love to entertain,” says Reynolds, who has never forgotten her childhood holiday meals. “Our culture has lost the joy of home entertaining because so many people go out. I love to have people over.” « 102 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

Peerless Pie

Running a restaurant is a risky endeavor, but opening one offers its own set of challenges, from determining the concept to picking a name you won’t regret. The latter was easy for chef Lindsay Autry and her partner, Thierry Beaud, who named their new CityPlace restaurant, The Regional Kitchen & Public House, after the regional flavors Autry weaves into her Southern-meets-Mediterranean cuisine. The menu is influenced by some of Autry’s lifelong favorites, like a summer tomato sandwich reinvented into a flavorful tomato pie. She built on the simple flavors she loved as a child by incorporating slow-roasted tomatoes, sharp cheddar cheese, herb aioli, and caramelized sweet onions into a savory pie crust. Regardless of what you order, make sure your come hungry because if there’s one thing

INE FLIGHTS HAVE BEEN POPULAR FOR YEARS, AND THE TREND IS EXPANDING AS RESTAURATEURS OFFER GUESTS THE CHANCE TO SAMPLE SMALL TASTES. WHILE WE MAY OVERINDULGE AT TIMES—CALL IT THE WHITMAN’S SAMPLER EFFECT—A FLIGHT ALLOWS US TO BROADEN OUR HORIZONS AND VENTURE OUTSIDE OUR COMFORT ZONE. HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST LOCAL EXAMPLES. —MARK SPIVAK Spirits: If you’re a fan of tequila, El Camino in Delray Beach offers nearly 200 varieties in its formidable tequila book, along with a comprehensive selection of mezcal. All are available in one- or two-ounce pours, giving customers the option of designing their own flight. “We function as a tour guide into the world of tequila,” says general manager Josh Perfit. Even better, El Camino offers flights of rare products such as Del Maguey and Vago, although those vary according to availability and supply. The cost varies as well: A trio of Mezcal sampling at El Camino blanco hovers around

Visitors to City Oyster can sample beers from some of South Florida's top breweries, like Funky Buddha and Due South.

$15-$20, while a sampling of Del Maguey sells for $35. (561-8655350, elcaminodelray.com) Beer: With 16 draft lines to choose from, Delray’s City Oyster is a beer lover’s dream. The undecided may pick four tastes of four ounces each for $6.25. Selections are heavy on local breweries such as Saltwater, Funky Buddha, and Due South, but visiting New Yorkers will appreciate sips from Brooklyn and Long Island. “The bar is extremely busy,” says bar manager Ted Downey. “So drawing draft beer into a fourounce glass can be a challenge at times, but it’s a nice option for people who don’t know what they want and would like to taste a range of beers to find out.” (561-272-0220, cityoysterdelray.com) Wine: City Cellar Wine Bar & Grill in West Palm Beach’s CityPlace has long offered flights, but recently the experience has become more refined. Now, the selections change monthly and are tailored to winemaker visits or designed to reflect the menu’s large selection of cheese and charcuterie. Flights consist of three pours of three ounces each, and range from $14-$17. “We’ve done regions such as Argentina, Italy, and New Zealand, or categories such as certified organic,” says general manager Michael Ignatowicz. TOQUE TALK In August, the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Resort & Spa appointed chef Gustavo Calderon to helm its roomwith-a-spectacular-view restaurant, 3800 Ocean. Originally from Mexico but with experience in Florida kitchens, Calderon spent the last four years working in some of The Ritz-Carlton’s best restaurants. He’s skilled at cooking on the fly, a talent on display at the Kitchen Table, an improvised five-course menu served inside 3800 Ocean’s kitchen. PBI sat down with the seasoned gourmand to talk all things food. (561-340-1795, marriott.com) —K.S. PBI: You’ve worked in some of the world’s finest kitchens. What made you want to return to Florida? Calderon: I’ve always had a love for Florida and have lived in Miami, Orlando, and Naples. As soon as I stepped foot into Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island, I had a great feeling and positive vibes. The ocean views also helped. What can Floridians expect from your cooking? My vision is to take them on a culinary journey through Latin American, Asia, and the Mediterranean. Diners can expect to see fresh, local produce and plenty of seafood

on my menus. Where do you source your creativity? From my Mexican-Colombian heritage and traveling around the world. I love to recreate and put my own spin on dishes from places I’ve visited, like baba ghanoush from Lebanon and samosas from Bahrain. What’s your pantry staple? Perhaps this is a different take on a staple, but common sense is the most important thing to have in the kitchen. Overthinking is our worst enemy. Less is more and simplicity is key. COCKTAIL CORNER

Blood and Sandals In 1922, Rudolph Valentino starred in Blood and Sand, a silent drama about a famous matador who becomes distraught and reckless, then dies in the ring. A cocktail of the same name came along a few years later and was made of blended Scotch, sweet vermouth, Cherry Heering, and blood orange juice—resulting in a red hue reminiscent of the bullfighter’s untimely demise. Brandon’s Palm Beach at the Tideline Resort, reinvents the cocktail with a riff called Blood and Sandals. It substitutes blood orange juice with standard orange, replaces Cherry Heering with juice from Filthy cherries, and adds sparkling wine. “We’re on the beach, so we wanted to make the drink more refreshing,” says lead bartender Ivan Ramirez. Blood and Sandals ¾ oz. Dewar’s White Label ½ oz. orange juice ½ oz. Carpano Antica vermouth 2 brandied cherries Splash of sparkling wine Muddle cherries, then add them to a shaker with ice and remaining ingredients. Shake until frosted on the outside, then double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish: The original version calls for a flamed orange zest. Brandon’s uses one to add another layer of flavor to the drink, but omits it from the final presentation. Their cocktail is garnished with orange slices accented with aromatic bitters and dehydrated in house. —M.S.

Festive BUBBLES

Find a Champagne house that suits your taste buds BY MARK SPIVAK

Few wine preferences are as personal as Champagne, and with good reason. Most major producers have a distinct house style that runs through their product line. Some makers will emphasize either Chardonnay or black grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier), while others will be light or heavy on dosage (sweetness). These individual styles can lead consumers to reach consistently for a particular make of bubbly. The following recommendations are based on tastings done in the past year, with a few personal favorites thrown in. Your palate may differ, but remember, if you’re drinking Champagne, life is pretty good. NON-VINTAGE BRUT These Champagnes offer the best introduction to a house style, and are the easiest bottles to find on a retail shelf. Most contain reserve wine from a number of older vintages, and sometimes have more complexity than their vintage counterparts. Top Picks: Laurent-Perrier Brut ($45) contains nearly 50 percent Chardonnay. Crisp and focused with vanilla accents and lilting lemon flavors enhanced by mouthwatering acidity, it pairs well with a variety of fish and shellfish dishes. At the other end of the scale, Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut ($45) weighs in with 45 percent Pinot Noir and 25 percent Pinot Meunier. The black grapes provide a rich, creamy texture along with considerable ripeness and depth, making it a good match for more substantial entrées. VINTAGE BRUT If we compare NV to a choral arrangement, vintage Champagne is an aria sung by a soprano— there is no room for error, and both the pitfalls and potential rewards are significant. Top Pick: Champagne production in 2005 had all the requirements for a vintage year—a hot summer, moderate rainfall, and an early harvest. Charles Heidsieck Brut 2005 ($95) is full-bodied, tart yet generous, with a faint 132 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

suggestion of red fruits paired with flavors of honey, vanilla, and citrus. The wine cries out for Dover sole. BLANC DE BLANCS When properly made from exceptional grapes, Champagnes composed exclusively of Chardonnay can fairly be described as voluptuous. They stand out in a blind tasting for their opulence, generosity, and richness of fruit. Top Pick: Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2006 ($160) is the flagship of the Taittinger range and it is nothing short of luscious. The creamy flavors of citrus and melon coat the tongue, giving way to a complex and layered midpalate that entices you to take another sip. ROSÉ Rosé Champagne has traditionally been a rarity, and not by accident. Most houses have kept production intentionally low, resulting in short supply and higher prices. Top Picks: Non-vintage Perrier-Jouët Blason Rosé ($75) is dry and well-balanced with haunting flavors of wild raspberry. The finish is long and succulent, with good acidity highlighting the red

berry flavors. For a special experience, try Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Rosé 2008 ($90); it is rich, ripe, and meaty with a range of earthy red fruits, a perfect match for salmon, tuna, poultry, and game. LUXURY CUVÉES The tête de cuvée is the ultimate expression of a house’s style and is a wine to be savored on special occasions. Top Picks: Forgo the familiar names in favor of a pair of sleepers from the 2002 vintage still widely available: Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d’Or ($105) and Pommery Cuvée Louise ($140). Palmes D’Or, a 50-50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, is rich and full enough to stand up to a wide range of foods. The Pommery is refined and elegant, with just a touch of tropical fruit to separate it from the pack. «

Shoe Salon and Boutique

Crisp nonvintage bruts like LaurentPerrier pair well with fish, while Philipponnat Royale Réserve is made from black grapes and therefore better suited to heavier entrées.

Cape Cod Calling Inspired by her own experiences on Cape Cod, Lisa Michael of Lisa Michael Interiors infused this Delray Beach home with the spirit of the posh peninsula. “Quintessential Cape Cod architecture is rooted in practicality and classic American style,” Michael says. “Like the quaint homes along the coast, this Florida residence was designed to exude a timeless JESSICA GLYNN PHOTOGRAPHY

appeal while maximizing comfort.” From the dining nook to the living room, nautical references and weathered finishes abound. A blue and white color palette bounces off wood elements, like the hand-painted ceiling by Dana Donaty Designs and the reclaimed dining table from ACP Home Interiors. SEE AND BE SHEEN For this Royal Palm Beach living room, Marilee Bentz of Marilee Bentz Designs Inc. kept it cool with a demure color palette and silver highlights. “Our clients desired the formal living room of their new South Florida home to be sophisticated but welcoming, elegant but comfortable, and to create a wonderful first impression,” Bentz says. “We achieved this by using a cool palette of silvers, grays, and whites along with dark wood tones to balance the room and add warmth. The addition of smokedmirrored tiles around the ribbon fireplace, crystal elements in the light fixtures, silver fabrics, and metallic accents provides sparkle day and night. The large area rug, silver-dusted sheer drapery, upholstered walls, and luxurious fabrics create a comfortable and pleasant space for our clients to entertain.” Lighthouse Point (954-599-6900, marilee bentzdesigns.com)

Agent Spotlight JACKI OJAKIAN & ABE KAMOR Private Clubs Specialists By Bella Group

“Which house?” The question is as old as the real estate profession. Modern private club living adds another crucial question to the mix, “Which house, in which community?” Starting with the second question first, Waterfront Properties’ Private Clubs Specialist Jacki Ojakian sounded less than daunted. “Within thirty minutes, I know.” Ojakian’s Club Community team member, Abe Kamor confirmed, “She’s not kidding. Within thirty minutes of meeting a client, we know almost without exception which club community is going to best suit that person’s desires and lifestyle.” This seeming “sixth sense” continues to prove advantageous for sellers and buyers alike.

Both Abe and Jacki quickly point out their successful matching of people and communities isn’t magic. “The truth is, people tell you what they want in a community. They often tell you the community they think will fit their needs.” Jacki continued, describing private communities as having distinct personalities, she stated, “The magic is familiarity. Abe and I both know the communities in our market extremely well.” She went on to say, “The community a person thinks will be the most conducive to their lifestyle, isn’t always the ideal community. The real skill is knowing how to present communities in a way that shows a prospective client the heartbeat of the club. That’s a combination of the club’s resident culture, properties, amenities, fellow residents, the social opportunities and the club’s management and staff. And, that’s just for starters.” Bucking a nationwide trend, locally golf continues to be a huge draw for private club living. Abe Kamor put the figure at about 80% as the number of buyers he sees who cite golf as their top, or among their top, priorities in a community. “Jacki and I are both golfers. So, when someone says, ‘I want to live in this club,’ because so and so pro golfer lives here, our follow up questions are always geared to understand our client’s golf game.” He described how the cache of a club’s touring residents is quickly overshadowed by the comparatively average or poor golfer’s inability to find suitable playing partners, or to get around on a course that’s too long or tough. It goes both ways. “You sometimes see very good golfers considering clubs where they will have the same difficulty finding suitable playing partners within the community.” Jacki continued, “The disconnect could be as simple as age. Whatever the reason, if a client purchases in a community that doesn’t fit, and it certainly is not always predicated on golf, we’d view that as an epic failure on our part.” Choosing and purchasing in the wrong club community is a costly mistake not quickly or economically remedied. We work really hard to help clients avoid those mistakes.”

LOCATION Understanding Jacki and Abe’s knowledge advantage comes down to the age-old real estate maxim: location, location, location. They’ve lived everywhere! Between the two, Jacki and Abe have lived in eight of the area’s prestigious private club communities. They chalk it up to life’s journey and a bit of wanderlust. “We’re no different than our clients. Our needs change over time.” When talking

community knowledge, they cite knowing the houses and sellers as a necessary given. “Knowing the management and knowing the various inner community club and foundation leadership is where we really serve our clients.” Jacki continued, “There’s so much nuance to what makes a club right for one person over the next.” The resources and knowledge Jacki and Abe bring to clients work equally well for sellers and buyers. On the seller side, Jacki said believing in a house and knowing why a house and a community work is paramount to bringing the correct buyer. Accommodating the buyer is all part of a much larger equation. “Ease of transaction is a hard to define phenomena. Basically, it’s doing whatever is necessary to see the transaction is completed efficiently.” She said the aftermath of the transaction is the most telling indicator of satisfaction. “When we get the call for a round of golf, that’s one way Abe and I know things went according to plan.” On the buyer side, it comes down to listening. “As I said, buyers tell you what they need and want in a community.” Jacki said the trick is listening past the statement. “There’s something at the heart of what the buyer is listing as their ‘must haves.’ Success comes from understanding the motivations behind the assertions.” Jacki and Abe have been with Waterfront Properties for 14 years and four years, respectively. They both describe the company as being incredibly supportive. Abe stated, “Jacki and I conduct a boutique, concierge business. The only way we can do this is to have the support, encouragement and resources of a strong team.” Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ Managing Partner Rob Thomson commented, “None of this is unique to Abe and Jacki. We devote the same resources to every agent’s business. Why wouldn’t we? Agents benefit. Sellers benefit. Buyers benefit. The secret sauce is truly global internet exposure, a worldwide referral network and professionals like Jacki and Abe who understand this business and what it takes to succeed.” Waterfront Properties’ local market dominance may be the worst kept secret. Jacki Ojakian and Abe Kamor are two big reasons why.

Unmatched global exposure. Rob Thomson | 561.346.1881 | waterfront-properties.com

Whole-body cryotherapy is gaining steam among people seeking relief from chronic pain, inflammation, stress, insomnia, and a host of other disorders and ailments. Defined as body cooling for therapeutic purposes, cryotherapy involves patients entering a narrow chamber where they are exposed to extremely cold temperatures for three minutes or less. The treatment stimulates collagen, flushes out toxins, revs up the metabolism, and releases endorphins. “It’s not a cure-all, but some people have discovered that they can address certain issues without the use of prescription drugs,” says Edison Keila, owner of Iceland Cryo in Tequesta. Safety First

December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and it’s a good thing. After all, you’ve been ruminating about the fine line between fun and an emergency room visit since your little ones handed you their Christmas lists. Want to know what toy hazards to avoid? Consult these points from toy safety watchdog World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) Inc. before heading to the store this holiday season. (toysafety.org) —P.B. • Beware of toys marketed on the internet without warnings, instructions, or age recommendations. • Watch out for projectile toys, including dart guns, slingshots, and pea-shooters, which can cause eye injuries and blindness. • Steer clear of toys with pointed tips and blunt or sharp edges that can crush, cut, or puncture a child’s skin. • Stay away from toys with strings longer than six inches, or toys that are to be strung across

cribs or playpens. Both can cause strangulation deaths and injuries in small children. • Think twice before buying realistic toy weapons such as guns, ninja weaponry, swords, or toy cleavers. All of these can promote violence in youth. • Be careful of toys with small parts as they pose a choking hazard. • Look out for toys that have toxic surfaces or components that can be ingested or cause skin irritations.

WAIST MANAGEMENT Rich, sugary foods and cocktails are as synonymous with the holiday season as ornaments and gift wrap. But these meals and drinks can leave behind an unwanted present—excess weight—if they’re not consumed in moderation. “The holidays will come and go quickly, and you don’t want to be feeling bad about the decisions you make,” says Jupiter-based dietitian Rebecca Berman. Berman understands that health and wellness goals can get lost in the holiday shuffle. She says the best way to get your diet back on track is to minimize your sugar intake. Cut back on, or just say goodbye to, the refined sugars found in cookies, sweets, and soda, as well as alcoholic drinks and starchy bread, rice, and pasta. “It’s also so important to drink a lot of water,” Berman adds. “Drink at least 12 ounces of water before each meal to help you fill up before you even take a bite.” Moderately portioned meals are also key. Portions can be a “tricky” thing to It begins innocently enough: an early morning scroll through your Facedetermine, Berman says, book feed, a scan of the headlines because it depends on what on Twitter, and then you’re off to you’re eating. In general, start your day. But when the amount she suggests filling half of of time you spend online increases, your plate with lean proit can be associated with a host of mental health problems, such as teins and the other half with depression, anxiety, and impulsive vegetables. Fruit—either a behavior. A recent study of 254 small piece or half a cup—is freshmen at McMaster University a good snack. in Hamilton, Canada, found that “Don’t lose sight of what’s mental health problems are more prevalent in those with symptoms important to you,” Berman of internet addiction. LIP REJUVENATION The old, the new and the newest from our practice: LIP FILLERS A great way to restore volume to the lips and eliminate the vertical lines above the red lip. They enable us to “customize” the desired volume and to compensate for asymmetries. LIP IMPLANTS A permanent and reversible option that uses soft silicone implants to enhance lip volume and contour. They come in different sizes and can be placed in the upper and the lower lip. A very safe and effective procedure for a natural look. “SMILE” LIFT Gently elevates the corners of the mouth for an attractive look. Developed in our pracitce, takes only 20 minutes. LIP LIFT One of our favorites: lifts and enhances the natural shape and the volume of the upper lip. It also improves the fine lines of the upper lip. DERMABRASION The best option for eliminating the fine and deep lines of the upper and lower lip.

Help & Hope Ensure your donation after a disaster does the most good By Judy Martel Whether man-made or natural, disasters like the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando or the earthquake in Ecuador trigger a visceral reaction to donate money. Using websites like gofundme.com, organizations can instantly solicit money following a tragedy. Before you “click and give,” make sure you know where your money is going.

FOLLOW THE MONEY Twelve days after the Pulse shooting, the Miami Herald reported that more than $6 million was raised through a GoFundMe campaign, but Eileen Heisman, president and CEO of National Philanthropic Trust, says it pays to be cautious of any website set up to respond to a specific crisis. “You have pop-up restaurants, but there’s no such thing as a popup charity,” she says. “Many are legitimate, but you want to know who’s at the other end of the site and what they are doing with the money.” With no way to really verify where the funds go when using a crowdfunding site, Heisman recommends donating to tried-andtrue community foundations like the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders instead. Unlike websites, established charitable organizations have to be accountable: They must file tax returns and be transparent with how the money is spent. “Transparency and clarity are very important,” Heisman says. While these organizations might not be able to tell you exactly what your $50 or $100 donation was spent on, they can specify the types of activities they support and provide information regarding their general budget. If you’ve chosen an organization with goals that match yours and that is equipped to deal with 172 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

the specific type of disaster, then you can be confident your money is being spent well.

MAXIMIZE YOUR CONTRIBUTION Heisman offers a few tips for giving in response to a disaster that will protect you and make the most of your contribution: Don’t give immediately. It may seem counterintuitive, especially because the need is urgent, but the best way to maximize your donation is to do nothing right away. “Don’t respond in the first 24 or even 48 hours,” Heisman explains. Allow yourself time to determine what type of help is needed and research the possibilities. “I don’t blame people for wanting to do something immediately, but I think the most important thing at first is to just pause,” she says. Do a little research. The internet, along with most community foundations and local newspapers, are great resources for sleuthing information about charities so you can separate the legitimate from the ineffective or fake. “I would kick the tires of any charity I was considering,” says Heisman. Check out charitystar.org and charitynavigator.org, both of which specifically track and evaluate charities. Consider staying local. Community foundations will often set up a fund to respond to a local disaster, so not only do you know they’re legitimate but they are often

the most-informed about the availability of resources and also have an established network. “They know the number of hospitals and clinics and other resources in the community and have the staff in place to direct victims’ families and make the phone calls,” she says. Divide and conquer. Breaking your gift into two or more smaller donations is sometimes more effective than giving all at once. Heisman recommends donating shortly after the disaster and then waiting 10 days or longer. Given some time, you’ll be able to determine if the initial charity spent your money appropriately and also assess whether another organization has stepped in to solve some of the longer-term issues related to the disaster. Listen to your gut. Finally, if you have any doubts or questions, don’t make the gift. “Step back and do more research to make sure your money is going to a legitimate organization,” she says. “Otherwise, you’re throwing it away.” At the end of the day, it comes down to whether or not you can trust the charity. “I think people care about how their money is spent, but most give impulsively and feel better immediately but don’t think about the outcome of their gift until later,” Heisman says. “People want to help and, as a whole, we feel responsible for each other as a community.” «

Shanghai Sensation COLUMBIA ARTISTS MANAGEMENT INC./CAMI

Since tumbling onto the stage in 1959, the Shanghai Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China have wowed audiences with their feats of acrobatic skill such as adagio, wherein performers use one another’s bodies to create unusual shapes through balance and support. The troupe will present their newest wonder, Shanghai Nights, at the Old School Square Pavilion in Delray Beach on December 4 and then at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce on December 5. Directed by Liu Junke and choreographed by Zhao Shuangwu and Iryna Koval, Shanghai Nights follows a boy as he pursues a phoenix through mystical landscapes, meeting high-chair climbers, aerial spinners, and a cast of magical characters along the way. Agenda

Madame Kazan Lainie Kazan is famous for her roles in films like Beaches and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but the actress has a soft spot for singing. She started her music career as Barbra Streisand’s understudy in Funny Girl, eventually taking over the role on Broadway. Kazan returns to the Colony Hotel December 27-30 to treat audiences to an evening of Great American Songbook standards, love songs, and Latin melodies. PBI spoke to Kazan about her career and legacy. (561-655-5430, thecolonypalmbeach.com) —K.S.

PBI: You’ve done it all—movies, television, and Broadway. What do you love about singing? Kazan: Singing is like something from the heavens. It’s an intimate form of communication and it thrills me to express myself that way. When I play a role, I take a part of myself and I magnify it. But when I sing, it is all who I am. What would you consider your greatest professional achievement? Working on The Dean Martin Show. I adored him and he adored me. We had a blast together. We were never romantically connected—it was just a friendship, but what a friendship. Not only did I love singing with him, [but] I’d go into his dressing room and there’d be The Duke [John Wayne], Ethel Merman, presidents. Everybody would be there. What are your favorite songs to sing when you’re feeling happy or in a blue mood? When I’m sad or longing, I sing “The Man that Got Away.” That’s been a staple of mine for many, many years. When I’m happy, I sing about joyous love, hope, and falling in love. I sing songs from Judy Garland’s albums like “The Trolley Medley” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” What’s your greatest nonmusical talent? Acting and teaching. This is my fifth year teaching at UCLA. I teach “Acting for the Singer.” I love it. They built me an Art Deco theater, and I put on these great shows. I think that’s my next horizon, to be a full-time professor, because it takes another kind of energy.

Still, Clare Benson

Once every two years, the Norton Museum of Art awards one rising photographer the coveted Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers. For its 2016-17 iteration, the museum invited four seasoned shutterbugs to each nominate one up-and-comer worthy of international acclaim. Their work—including photographs, videos, handmade books, sculptures, and one seismic installation formed from 1,000 images—is on display through January 15. On January 5, one lucky artist will take home top honors and a cash prize of $20,000. (561-832-5196, norton.org) —K.S.

If Dr. Mehmet Oz follows any philosophy, it’s this: There is nothing bad about feeling good. For 30 years, the Cleveland-born cardiologist and media personality has encouraged others—including Oprah Winfrey—to lead healthy, productive lives. He’s authored seven best-selling wellness books, hosts a seven-time Emmy Award–winning television show, and teaches surgery at Columbia University. In 2010, he co-founded Sharecare, an app that provides users with health and wellness assistance, like finding a doctor. In his downtime, he enjoys living the good life with his wife, Lisa, at Louwana, their Addison Mizner–designed oceanfront estate in Palm Beach.
