v FROM THE PUBLISHER
Sunny Side Up y nature, I am an optimist. Yes, I tend to see the proverbial glass as half-full and I believe dark clouds often have silver linings. I don’t ignore reality, but I do think it’s better to live your life expecting the best—mainly because the alternative isn’t nearly as fun. My experiences suggest you probably share this viewpoint. One of the joys of publishing this magazine is developing personal relationships with our readers and business partners, and perhaps the most common characteristic I see in people who are frequently described as “successful” is a healthy, positive outlook in most matters. I was reminded of this recently while reading an essay in BusinessWeek titled “Only the Optimists Survive,” in which management expert and author Warren Bennis writes: “Limits, constraints and reduced expectations are the conventional prescriptions for our time. True leaders, however, are able to see beyond an anemic zeitgeist in order to sense opportunities that can employ and house a multitude. Optimists have a sixth sense for possibilities that realists can’t or won’t see. That gives the optimist the ability to ‘define reality’ for others in a compelling way. … This is not sentimentalism: It is the essence of creative pragmatism. It is good because it works.” Those words really resonate these days. We’ve been through some challenging times lately, but I am hopeful—because if history is any indication, challenging times often lead to successful ventures. During the past 150 years or so, many of the world’s best-known brand names—in industries as diverse as garments, packaged food and electronics—were born amid turbulent economic periods. Why? In almost every case, it was because creative, optimistic people found new solutions for old problems and fresh products to stimulate a stale marketplace. I’d never suggest confidence and a smile are everything necessary to produce the next Brooks Brothers, Armour Foods, Sony Walkman or Google, but they don’t hurt. And they certainly beat passively waiting for, and maybe fearing, what comes next. As many of us take advantage of the summer’s slower pace to recharge our batteries, I hope you’ll also take inventory of the factors that have led to your own success, and that you’ll decide now is the right time to pursue some of the opportunities available to those optimistic enough to see them—whatever they may be.

v EDITOR'S LETTER
All the Best n the summer, when the social season quiets down, my thoughts often turn to the treasures and pleasures found close to home. It’s only natural. This is the time of year when the pace is a little less frantic, and there is more time to visit that new flower shop or order the custom cupcakes everyone’s been raving about. To celebrate the wonderful experiences found in our own backyard, we present “The A-List” (page 51). This carefully vetted compendium is our own little black book filled with a few of our favorite things in fashion, beauty, dining, culture and simple pleasures. Some of our picks are widely loved, while others—such as the aforementioned cupcakes, at Café L’Europe—are well-kept secrets waiting to be discovered. This year, we have even asked our favorite burger bar, the aptly named Grease, to create a custom burger reflective of Palm Beach and worthy of the A-List. They have come up with an amazing concoction. Turn to page 56 for the details. Better yet, drop by Grease and try one. And since summer gives us the perfect excuse to spend some lazy days at resorts, on the golf course or on the water, fashion also is top of mind. Our fashion feature, shot at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Naples, is a vintage postcard of old Florida, but the looks are gloriously au courant. Check out “Retro Resort,” on page 64. Our nod to summer fashion doesn’t stop there. On page 78, we present our favorite accessories for all the leisure activities of summer. Whether you are driving, boating, golfing or strolling, here or abroad, consult “Style & Leisure” for wardrobe musts for summer play. Perhaps the best part of this time of year is making new discoveries and acting (and shopping and eating) locally. That gets an A in my book.

v JAMES FERRAGAMO James Ferragamo understands the importance of quality, beauty and business. He is, after all, the grandson of shoe maestro Salvatore Ferragamo. When James joined the family business in 1998, he’d already received his MBA in finance, and worked at Saks Fifth Avenue and Goldman Sachs. Today, the 37-year-old serves as the director of women’s handbags and leather goods. James, who resides in Florence, Italy, spoke to PBI about his role at the luxury goods business.

n How do you explain Ferragamo’s strong South Florida following? Our customers in Florida understand and appreciate the qualities that define our brand: style, quality, craftsmanship and innovation. Our brand easily fits into the luxurious yet relaxed Florida lifestyle, as it does the Mediterranean lifestyle. n What are some recent collaborations? Ferragamo has consistently been involved with wardrobe on films. This has always been the case throughout our history since my grandfather started out in Hollywood designing shoes for films. In all, we have collaborated on more than 50 films since 1920. When it comes to big collaborations, such as the one we had with Australia, we look for projects that are authentic to the brand, and always the opportunity to work with visionary filmmakers. [Also] we just collaborated with [designer] Yohji Yamamoto on a special shoe collection for the fall season. n What is the best fashion advice you can offer a woman? Women should have passion for the products they are wearing and feel confident in them. To me, the most fashionable women seek products with longevity, luxurious details and fine quality. —Lola Thélin

Aging Gracefully Without Surgery
Dr. Layne D. Nisenbaum
“The desired result is to make patients look better, more restored and youthful, not different.”
Firming, filling and tightening are the mainstay of rejuvenation and restoration of the skin. As we age, our skin loses its collagen and elasticity. Genetics play a role but prior exposure to the sun eventually takes its toll on the surface and deeper tissues. Fortunately, laser, light and injectable products can help restore years of damage from “fun in the sun.” Light-based treatments, such as photo rejuvenation, intense pulse light and radiofrequency devices, have been shown–when properly administered–to reduce pigmentation, increase tone and tighten the face, neck, chest, abdomen and extremities. IPL (photo rejuvenation), Thermage® (radiofrequency) and Fractional Resurfacing do work! Treatments must be customized to the patient’s skin type to determine the proper settings and treatment protocol. Patients do not have to experience pain, discomfort or significant downtime to get visible results. Combined modality treatments are often recommended after a customized assessment is made, ussually during the initial cosmetic consultation. Injections using fillers, volumizers and muscle relaxers help to restore volume that is lost due to age. The skin appears smoother, plumper and less lined. There are many injectable substances to work with these days, each with unique properties that can be mixed and matched to the patient’s problem areas. Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm® Ultra and Ultra Plus, ArteFill and Sculptra™ are just some of the safest and most natural appearing fillers. BOTOX® and the newest FDA approved Dysport® are indicated for “frown lines.” The best use of the above listed procedures is where science and art come together. The desired result is to make patients look better, more restored and youthful, not different. Body treatments have come a long way from the invasive procedures of days past. With the advent of SmartLipo™, neck, abdomen, thigh and back fat can be melted and tightened simultaneously. Loose skin under the arms (bat wings) responds incredibly well with the smallest incisions. Ninety percent of the smart-lipo procedure is really laser. It is this component of the treatment that contracts the collagen causing skin tightening. For those patients with cellulite and in need of body toning, LPG’s newest Endermologie® lipo-massage is ideal. Customized skin care regimens and products complete the process with at-home instructions individualized to each patient’s unique needs. Remember, your lifestyle and budget are always paramount. A treatment regimen does not have to be all or none. It is always about you and your goals and realistic expectations.

diversions first class v ITALIAN BEAUTY The Hotel Caruso Belvedere beckons visitors to the beautiful Amalfi Coast. by ROBERT RAGAINI
Genivs Loci/courtesy caruso ravello
In 1893, the Pensione Belvedere occupied just five rooms of an eleventh-century palace overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Ten years later, thanks to an article in the New York Times, the hotel and its owner, Pantaleone Caruso, were famous. So famous, in fact, that when the great opera tenor Enrico Caruso first arrived in America, his cousin, the hotelier, was better known.

Clockwise from top: The panoramic view from the heated infinity swimming pool. The entrance to the hotel is “guarded” by two thirteenth-century stone lions. The dome-shaped vaulted ceiling of a deluxe junior suite is decorated with frescoes. The spa offers many treatments, including an open-air massage.

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
A parade of noteworthy guests soon discovered the renamed Hotel Caruso Belvedere, which now occupied the entire palazzo. Wealthy Americans rubbed elbows with King Farouk of Egypt, author Virginia Woolf and conductor Arturo Toscanini. After World War II, Caruso’s sons entertained ballerina Margot Fonteyn, Humphrey Bogart, Jackie Kennedy, Greta Garbo ... the list goes on and on. They came, and come still, for the splendid views, the lemon groves and vineyards and for Ravello, one of the Amalfi Coast’s loveliest villages. They come, of course, for the hotel with its eighteenth-century frescoes, its lavish suites, the terrace framed by Norman arches and the two stone lions at its entrance. These are emblematic of treasures
Ravello’s seafaring merchants brought home. The lions guard a portal that dates back to the 1200s and is rumored to have once belonged to the church of Saint Eustachio in Pontone. Every part of the Hotel Caruso is worthy of a postcard, from the infinity pool at the edge of a ledge that drops 1,100 feet to the famous Amalfi Drive, to the rooms with ancient arches and ultra-modern bathrooms. Huge suites, columned, irregularly shaped, open to terraces and private gardens. Painted ceilings embellish intimate public spaces. Alfresco dining at night reveals the pinprick lights of villages along the coast. Some guests choose to just check into the hotel and stay there, strolling the lush, fragrant gardens. They succumb to the top-of-the-world pool, and the spa offers more treatments than can possibly be experienced. For those guests that want to explore, the Hotel Caruso has devised personalized itineraries for maximum pleasure with minimum stress. From a helicopter, guests can gaze down on Amalfi’s medieval alleyways, or search for the Blue Grotto while hovering above Capri. Then it’s off by launch to discover secret coves and hidden beaches, perfect for private picnics. Ravello itself is a pageant of Italy’s past. At the thirteenth century Villa Rufulo, fountains lead to a panoramic view. Across town, the Villa Cimbrone’s gardens offer
serious competition. The cathedral, private villas and boutiques are a continual treat. Farther afield, adventurers can hike up Mount Vesuvius, an all-day excursion. Of course, sustenance is required for even a restful vacation. Sun-dried pasta and brick oven pizza are found at the hotel’s informal Poolside Bar, while the open air Belvedere Restaurant provides more extensive repasts. In the Caruso Restaurant, Chef Mimmo di Raffaele creates such specialties as buffalo carpaccio with sweet and sour marinated vegetables, risotto with savoy cabbage and crisp cuttlefish, and Amalfitan fish with lemon leaf, chicory hearts and walnuts. Traditional sponge cake is flavored with Amalfi lemons and caramelized raspberries. With dinner, guests can enjoy a bottle of the hotel’s Gran Caruso, a crisp, local white wine, or perhaps a bit of limoncello
liqueur, flavored by the rinds of Ravello’s lemons. These enhance profiteroles, marmalades, baba au limone, even linguine with lemon. A nightcap before retiring? Not many cocktail bars have frescoes from the 1700s. The Hotel Caruso makes a writer wonder how many synonyms there are for the word “beautiful.” In this case, not enough. hotelcaruso.com u

LICENSED TO THRILL
Aston Martin’s thundering DBS flagship will leave you shaken and stirred
BY HOWARD WALKER
48
Two things a new owner of Aston Martin’s magnificent $274,000 DBS super car should know before taking delivery. Firstly, it doesn’t float. You may remember reading in the papers about the unfortunate driver who was delivering a new DBS to the set of the latest James Bond escapade, Quantum of Solace. When he lost control of the 510-horsepower, 191mph projectile, he crashed through a wall and dunked the car into the chilly waters of Lake Garda in Italy. Unlike 007’s famous white Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me, which turned into a submarine when it dived into the briny, the Aston sank like a rock. The second piece of valuable advice for every new DBS owner: Never lose the ignition key. Why? A replacement will cost you a cool $2,000. That’s because this chunk of stainless steel and sapphire is nothing
PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
less than a piece of automotive jewelry. So much so that Aston doesn’t even call it a key—it’s an ECU, short for Emotion Control Unit. In the metal, this new DBS looks beyond beautiful. It’s tough-guy Daniel Craig in a Brioni suit, with fine cloth stretched taut over powerful muscles. While the car is based on the less-expensive DB9, it sits lower, is wider, and features bold, carbon fiber body add-ons similar to those used in Aston’s Le Mans-winning racecars. Climb aboard and there’s more exquisite handstitched leather and suede here than in any Coach handbag store. In fact it takes seven complete hides to upholster every DBS cabin. You sit low and tight in form-fitting bucket seats looking at gauges that wouldn’t look out of place on a leather band on your wrist. And when you turn on the stereo, you’re treated to a breathtaking 13-speaker, 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen
sound system featuring the most beautiful, sculpted metal tweeters that levitate from the corners of the dash. But forget about sharing the Aston experience with friends—the DBS is strictly a two-seater, with teeny rear seats best suited to pre-teens, your favorite designer briefcase or Hermès Kelly bag. Firing up the big 6-liter V12 is a piece of pure theater. You take the crystal key, insert it into its docking station on the dash, and watch as it starts to glow red, indicating the car is ready for action. Now push the key for two seconds and listen to the deep, barrel-chested whooomph as all 12 cylinders explode into life. It’s the kind of noise that raises all those little hairs on the back of your neck, and sends small household pets running for cover. The big V12 is developed from the engine that powers Aston’s DB9 sports car, but comes with an
additional 60 horses in keeping with its flagship status. While the original DBS was only offered with a rather clunky, shift-it-yourself sixspeed manual, this latest version we’re driving comes with a brilliant new sixspeed Touchtronic automatic. You can leave it in drive and let the transmission deliver rapid-fire shifts for you. Or you can punch the “sport” button and use the gorgeous magnesium-alloy paddles behind the steering wheel to do your own shifting. Either way it’s driving nirvana. If you’re in a hurry, the DBS can lunge from standstill to 62 mph in a mere 4.3 sec-
onds. Keep the pedal to the metal, and the lunging won’t quit till the speedo is showing 191 mph. And if you thought the noise at start-up was music to your ears, wait till you hear it as the tachometer needle passes the 5,500-rpm mark. That’s when invisible by-pass valves open and let the full fury of the exhaust blast through creating a sound that makes Dale Jr.’s NASCAR stockcar seem hushed. Need to stop in a hurry? With ceramic rotors the size of Domino’s extra large pizzas, the DBS halts with the effectiveness of hurling a ship’s anchor out the back. This is a magical car to drive. Blisteringly fast, sensational through the turns, yet easy, relaxed and very forgiving. It’s rare, too, with fewer than 300 copies headed to the United States this year, accompanied by a waiting list as long as the Quantum of Solace script. u

NIGHT MOVES Some of the area’s most popular residents are also the most elusive, only hitting the beach under cover of darkness. No, they are not worried about sunburn. This time of year is when loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles make their way up the beaches to lay their eggs. Each year, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center of Juno Beach offers opportunities to see this amazing nesting process. The perfect activity for families.

NARCISO RODRIGUEZ CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF DESIGNING ELEGANT, TIMELESS PIECES FOR TRULY GLAMOROUS WOMEN. BY MICHELLE M. HAVICH

PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
When we talk about the season, we’re thinking social, awards and night-on-the-town season. Each year, as numerous red carpets are rolled out, from Hollywood to Palm Beach, the question on everyone’s lips is, “Who are you wearing?” For women who like to make a best-dressed impression while keeping it simple, the answer is easy—Narciso Rodriguez, who is famous for his ability to make women like Julia Louis-Dreyfus and First Lady Michelle Obama look fabulous and elegant without going over the top. For Rodriguez, a woman is at her most beautiful “when she’s at her most natural, when they aren’t heavily made up and kind of comfortable
with themselves and with what they wear and in their skins,” he says. “And a man too, for that matter. That’s the reality of fashion. I think you feel good and that’s the most important thing.” It is that belief that has kept the designer a favorite of celebrities like Louis-Dreyfus, who frequently sports Rodriguez’s designs to award shows and premieres. And when it comes to getting red-carpet ready, Rodriguez is all about the personal touch, creating ongoing working relationships with the women who choose his gowns. “I work a little bit differently,” he says, when asked if he sends gowns to publicists for awards shows. “I’ve dressed Julia in the past, so it’s more a one-

Citing Christobal Balenciaga and Coco Chanel as his style icons, Rodriguez is a very hands-on designer. This precision and attention to detail is evident in the finished product.
on-one relationship. I don’t really create gowns to send to the Oscars. There are people that I respect and love to work with and they like to work with me, so it’s an easy collaboration. It’s much easier for me for Julia to call me and say, ‘Can you make me something?’ “It’s wonderful because it’s more of a personal endeavor. We’ve cultivated a relationship and a friendship. I always think that if a woman feels good then she looks good, and if she’s as gorgeous as Julia, I feel really good about the collaboration.” Rodriguez, whose clothes are available locally at Saks Fifth Avenue in Palm Beach, recently celebrated the tenth year of his eponymous fashion label, which includes clothes and shoes for women, as well as scents for both men and women. He marked this anniversary with the release of Narciso Rodriguez (Rizzoli), a coffee table book he put together with Betsy Berne, who has written for The New Yorker, Vogue and the New York Times Magazine. Contributions from actress Rachel Weisz, New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, among others, also are included in the pages. Those expecting to see page after page of fabulous fashion will be a little shocked when they open this tome. Pictures of busy streets and colorful, crowded beaches take the place of runway shows and models. But it’s a perfect reflection of the creative style of this New Jerseyborn designer who once aspired to be an architect. “I didn’t want to do a catalog of 10 years of fashion shows, or 10 years of beautiful images from magazines,”
he says. “It really was more a glimpse into my design process and how I think of life and design and how I travel and shoot pictures and see people. Whether it was the beautiful body of a girl jumping into the surf, or action shots of people moving on the streets, the pulse of the city in the morning or at night. I document everything with my camera and I always have sketchbooks.” Included is the dress that Rodriguez is probably the most famous for creating—the now iconic wedding gown that his good friend, Carolyn Bessette, wore when she married John F. Kennedy Jr. The book is dedicated to Bessette, and Rodriguez’s voice cracks a little when talking about her. “Carolyn was the inspiration for that dress,” he says. “She was a very beautiful woman and a great inspiration to me in my work and in my personal life. I had this great bond with her ever since we met at Calvin [Klein]. We worked together at Calvin. She was it. I love her a great deal and she was very close to me. It was fun to design my best friend’s wedding dress. If that is the one thing that people remember my work by, I’m very proud of that.” Rodriguez puts that emotion into the book, so the whole thing reads like a personal journal of the designer’s life and career. The goal was to make it one giant sketchbook with his sketches intermixed with shots of models trying on half-created dresses, fashion shots and the chaos of the street. Or the beach. Or graffiti on a building. Anything that catches the designer’s eye, he draws inspiration from. “I’m a
person who has always lived in the city, and I’m very much about the city and how the city moves and how people move within the city. The architecture of the city, and so many great architects whose work I’ve admired, have influenced me and my work,” Rodriguez says. “I photograph buildings as well as life on the street, whether it’s a village in Italy or [New York City]. I’m very curious about how things are built, which really translates into the work, because I am always building and constructing in my own way.” Rodriguez’s early desire to be an architect is obvious in the way he constructs a dress or a gown, the lines of each piece clean and simple, without frills or frippery. The book represents that with images of his boards, covered in pinned up squares of fabric to represent the building blocks of a design. And, as with many construction projects, sometimes the design is never really “finished.” “A collection could be in the works for years,” he says. “The collection that we just presented, parts of it have been ideas I’ve been evolving from past seasons, and ideas I’ve had that I’ve never made happen. … For me it’s never done. It’s a thought process that’s continuous. I think there’s a consistency to design when you think like that.” Rodriguez relived past collections last year to create pieces used in the fashion show scene at the end of 2008’s The Women, starring Meg Ryan. In the film, Ryan’s character transforms from the wronged wife of a philanderer into a strong, independent woman starting her own fashion line. It was fitting that a designer famous for dressing just such a woman was tapped to create the collection. “It was clear that they wanted to present a woman that was strong, that the work be
sort of iconic and bold and have that great Jungle Red influence here and there,” he says. “It was a great collaboration working with things from my archives and maybe changing something I made in the past or remaking something in Jungle Red.” In looking back on his work, Rodriguez says that some of his personal favorites among his collections were sometimes not the most loved by critics, but his style has always been evolving. He is always working and loves what he does. “When you get into ruts of like ‘I have to sketch,’ that’s when it becomes a chore. I’m constantly sketching. I was just in a spin class and I was sketching,” he says, laughing. “I think everyone was a little shocked when I just stopped and picked up my sketchbook and started to sketch.” But did he still pedal? “Slowly. I wasn’t jumping up and down.” Rodriguez’s designs have become more intelligent over the years, with more substance, attention to detail and a timelessness that defies trends. He certainly is a man who knows his audience. “I think the women who appreciate my work and are loyal see that I am very serious about design and the design process and making them look good,” he says. “Things are quite streamlined, and there’s no nonsense to it. They’re smart girls. They don’t get caught up in fashion trends. They’re not necessarily looking to a designer to give them a look. They have their own look.” And it is a look that will only get better. “I never like to say I’m going to do this, this and this in the next five or 10 years,” he says. “The reality is life changes, we change, the economy changes. It’s like a roller coaster. And change is good.” u
Rodriguez is known for the simplicity of his designs, which flatter everyone from Hollywood celebs to Palm Beach’s social elite.

DISH v COOL AND SWEET Of the many ways to combat the summer heat, stopping for a refreshing Italian sorbetto is one of the best. At Dolce de Palma in West Palm Beach, owner Anthony de Palma makes his every other day, using fresh local ingredients combined with fruit bases imported from Italy. On the days when he’s not concocting sorbetto, he’s making (you guessed it) gelato. Delightful flavors like Blood Orange, Lemon, Mixed Berry, Pistachio and Peanut Butter are only part of his repertoire. SUMMER SIPPING Cool cocktails for hot nights BY MARK SPIVAK
The ritual of the summer cocktail seems imbedded in our DNA. Perhaps it’s an outgrowth of the pleasantly lazy feeling of having time on our hands—the leisure to nap in a hammock, read a book or invent a drink that reflects our enjoyment of the moment. This summer, blood oranges seem to be as hot as pomegranates were last year. Solerno, a blood orange liqueur from Sicily, is turning up in cocktails in urban lounges as upscale as Manhattan’s Plaza Hotel. It may be served on the rocks, mixed with sparkling wine, or used to enliven traditional drinks such as the margarita. If you’re more adventurous, consider X-Rated Fusion Liqueur. Described by the manufacturer as “a sensuous blend of ultra-premium French vodka and rich blood oranges, mingling with mangos and passion fruit,” it’s used to make concoctions such as the X-Rated iced tea, pink lemonade or Latin lover. 98

If you think you’re seeing more mai tais, scorpions and piña coladas than ever before, you’re not hallucinating. The tiki lounge is back, and Polynesian pop is all the rage across the country (we have a head start, of course, since it never really went out of style in Florida). To take advantage of this trend, SKYY vodka has added a pineapple-flavored vodka to its line of Infusions offerings, which already includes passion fruit, raspberry and citrus. SKYY Infusions Pineapple is featured in cocktails such as the hula dancer’s delight and toasted coconut colada. One of the more interesting spirits to appear recently is p.i.n.k. vodka, which happens not to be pink. P.i.n.k. (the meaning of the acronym is known only to the producer) is a blend of Dutch vodka, caffeine and guarana, which also stimulates the nervous system. Lest you think this is an adult version
of a Monster, an ounce of p.i.n.k. contains the same uplift as half a cup of coffee, without the sugar and carbohydrates found in energy drinks. Described as having a “playfully naughty side,” it’s used to make the p.i.n.k. screwdriver, the p.i.n.k. Mary, and—of course—the p.i.n.k. flamingo. Few beverages have been as popular as tea the past few years, and the makers of Zen Green Tea Liqueur are capitalizing on it. Made by Suntory in Japan, Zen incorporates the taste of matcha green tea leaves. James Labe, America’s first “tea sommelier,” has created a series of cocktails that combines Zen Green Tea Liqueur with a number of different teas including jasmine pearl green (Zen Blossom), Earl Grey (Zen Awakening) and mercy oolong (Zen Goddess). It’s a painless shortcut to enlightenment. There are many new and different ways to make use of the contents of your liquor
cabinet. Grand Marnier may conjure up images of winter nights and roaring fires, but a little bit will also enhance the flavor of a margarita, and it may be substituted for rum to make a striking version of a mojito. Even better is the Orange Crush, in which the flavors of the liqueur are enhanced by orange chunks, lemon juice and Angostura bitters. Slipping a shot or two into your sangria will provide both an amplified taste sensation and inspired dinner conversation. Consumers often regard the creation of new cocktails as blueprints that must be followed exactly. In reality, the reverse is true. Mixologists come up with new recipes the same way we do—by trial and error. The moral? Stock a supply of your favorite beverages and cocktail components, feel free to experiment and keep that hammock handy. ◆

The tradition of expertly prepared authentic Italian cuisine continues at Vic & Angelo’s new location. BY MARK SPIVAK
Long before we had Northern Italian restaurants in America, there were many places like Vic & Angelo’s. They were generally neighborhood restaurants that were busy and crowded. The tablecloths were a pattern of checkered red and white, and Chianti bottles functioned as makeshift lamps. They served the classic dishes of Southern Italy, and did them well. Vic & Angelo’s Delray Beach location comes out of that tradition, although marbletopped tables have replaced the checkered tablecloths of old, and the Chianti bottles are 100 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED
full and offered for sale. What you get at Vic & Angelo’s are large portions of Italian comfort food, zesty and expertly prepared. Be advised that this is not a place for an intimate, romantic rendezvous. The restaurant is full on most evenings, and tables are packed tightly together. Depending on the night, disco, classical or Italian music plays in the background, reverberating off hard surfaces of tile and brick; the occasional freight train rolls by on the adjacent Atlantic Avenue tracks. It adds up to a convivial atmosphere, in which you’re likely to
fall into conversation with your neighbors. A grilled artichoke ($12.50) is an excellent way to begin the meal. The tasty artichoke is cut into large pieces, stuffed with herbed breadcrumbs after grilling, and served with a dipping sauce of herb-infused mayonnaise. Other traditional appetizers include calamari (grilled or fried) and an Old School Meatball, accompanied by tomatoes, peppers, basil and whipped ricotta. Among pastas, the Linguine & Clams ($19.50), offered either in red or white sauce, is a delight. The white version is
packed with an abundance of garlic and sprinkled with hot pepper flakes. Plump, tiny clams garnish the dish, and the pasta is cooked to perfection. Entrées span a range that includes dryaged steaks and chops, burgers made with grass-fed beef, and fresh seafood. Tender veal scaloppine ($24.50) is served in an intense reduction of veal stock, accompanied by creamy Parmesan risotto and garlicky porcini jus. Daily specials such as silky, sashimi-grade tuna ($34) are spectacular, lightly grilled and placed on a bed of sautéed vegetables and white beans. Pizzas also are a good choice here—fired in a coal oven at 900 degrees, the thin crust emerges crisp and delectable. The wine list encompasses several hundred selections; except for a handful of options from California, they are all Italian, and most of them have been chosen to match the food. While prices tend to be high, there are bargains to be found, such as the Borgo Conventi Sauvignon from Italy’s Collio region ($35) that accompanied our dishes. The open wines are served by the quartino (8.5 ounces), perfect for sharing or topping off a glass. Open less than a year, Vic & Angelo’s has become wildly popular, and reservations are imperative on weekends and during the season. Culinary Director Glen Manfra has been the driving force behind many successful Italian restaurants in the area, and has delivered quality and significant value in Delray. ◆

HOT TIMES IN THE CITY
Il Bacio has opened its doors in downtown Delray Beach. Billed as a restaurant and ultra lounge, this is the first South Florida venture by restaurateur Steven Pellegrino, and couples quality food with a hip nightclub vibe. Italian for “the kiss,” Il Bacio is open for both lunch and dinner, and the menus feature cold and warm tapas, pizzettes and small entrées. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available, including VIP cabanas and private booths. Nightly themed entertainment comes in the form of DJs or live bands performing on the outdoor stage. Our favorite? Polyester Wednesdays, where we can dance the night away to our favorite ’70s and ’80s hits. 561-865-7785
GOING GREEK As the weather is getting hotter, we love to beat the heat with a cold drink while sitting outside. Ouzo Blue in PGA Commons fits the bill with a variety of specialty cocktails, including the tongue-twisting Grey Goose Zeus Juice and the Spartan’s Last Stand. We enjoyed our beverages with fresh pita bread with hummus and tzatziki, and an order of dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) from their meze menu. The full menu features traditional Greek dishes served with interesting and flavorful twists. For a special treat, enjoy the Seafood Platter for two, which has prawns, mussels and calamari, and a whole snapper that is filleted tableside. Stay later for the belly dancers, where table dancing is encouraged. Palm Beach Gardens (561-776-3188, ouzoblue.com)

CHEF TALK JOHN BELLEME, Henry’s Chef John Belleme is a true family man. This South Florida native and father of four, credits his father, cookbook author and health authority John Sr., for his Asian cooking influences. As the new executive chef at Henry’s in Delray Beach, Belleme is stirring up some exciting comfort food favorites, but this isn’t his first time working with restaurateur Burt Rapoport, whose Rapoport’s Restaurant Group owns Henry’s, as well as Clematis Social, Opus 5 and Bogart’s. Belleme has been creating outstanding dishes in Rapoport’s family of restaurants for nearly 17 years. In fact, in addition to his new role at Henry’s, Belleme will continue to manage the kitchen at Opus 5. (561-638-1949, henrysofbocaraton.com)

of time in Japan and even speaks the language, a little. I lived with my father in 1976 as a young teenager in Boston, in what you would have to call a macrobiotic commune or what was referred to at the time as a “macrobiotic study house.” Part of my responsibilities was to help plan and prepare dinner for the occupants and guests, 2530 people at a time. It was very interesting and the kitchen was the only warm room in the house. I could go on and on about my experiences in the commune but what’s most important is it’s where I got my start in cooking and most of the cuisine was Japanese as well as other Asian influences. I believe a lot of the Asian influences in my cooking goes all the way back to the culture I experienced with my time in Boston at the study house. ■ HOW DO YOU PLAN TO PUT YOUR OWN TAKE ON HENRY’S COMFORT FOOD? RESIDENTS ARE LARGELY MIDWESTERN, UNPRETENTIOUS PROFESSIONALS, MOSTLY ENTREPRENEURS, WHO ARE ACTIVE OR RETIRED CEOS. AMONG THEM ARE A FEW LAID-BACK CELEBRITIES WHO DO NOT WANT TO DEPRIVE THEMSELVES OF EXTRAVAGANCES, BUT CRAVE DISCRETION.
Sophistication coupled with charm permeates the streets, shops, galleries, bistros and restaurants. Naples has had a careful evolution. Unlike other cities that have gained rapid growth and great popularity, Naples has neither exploded nor blown up. Rather, it has evolved—matured like fine wine. That down-to-earth quality does not depreciate the luxury or culture thriving in Naples. There are plentiful upscale stores, fine art galleries, elegant dining, exquisite bistros, deluxe resorts, and an extensive selection of other cultural activities. Part of the sophistication of Naples is derived from its rich culture. In addition to offering more than 100 art galleries, the Patty & Jay Baker Naples Museum of Art contains 15 galleries with entrance gates by Albert Paley and a ceiling created by glass artist Dale Chihuly. The museum also offers lectures and educational programs. The Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts is an exceptional 1,222-seat hall that hosts more than 400 performances and visual arts events, including Broadway shows, symphonies, and ballets. It is also the home of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Downtown, the von Liebig Art Center, situated next to Cambier Park, features contemporary American art in addition to works from visiting exhibitions. Lectures and workshops are available as well. Gulfshore Playhouse is a local group that offers live theater performances at the Norris Center, while the Sugden Community Theatre hosts a community theater troupe, The Naples Players. The Naples Jazz Society and Classic Chamber Concerts play there as well. Art galleries are located throughout the city. Functional art, photographs, landscapes, SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
portraits, jewelry, oil paintings, acrylics, sculptures, watercolor scenes and hand-blown glass comprise just some of the inventory. Four Winds showcases Native American jewelry and artwork, and Galerie du Soleil offers a wonderful experience for artist exhibitions and private gatherings, as well as spectacular paintings, drawings and sculptures. Third Street South may be enough of a reason to visit Naples or motivate you to extend your stay. This elegant shopping area offers formal to casual retail stores, fine art galleries, antique shops, home furnishings, great restaurants, gift stores, jewelry boutiques, bookstores, ice cream and more. Stores like Tommy Bahama are alongside boutiques unique to Naples, such as Tickled Pink, Fancy Nancy’s and Kathryn’s. Marissa Collections carries top designers, including Michael Kors, Valentino and Oscar de la Renta, and Gattle’s offers linens and accessories. Third Street maintains world-class sophistication, while it also is the Main Street that most of America is missing today. Park your car and spend the day strolling along the landscaped streets and grab a bite at one of the charming eateries, such as SeaSalt and Campiello, or indulge at nearby restaurants on Fifth Avenue South, like Bistro 821. The finest hotels are minutes away and the Gulf is just down the sreet. Throughout the year, there are special events downtown that offer live music, sidewalk fairs and art shows. Farther east on Fifth Avenue South is Bayfront. Situated on Naples Bay, the brick paths and European architecture offer casual restaurants, fine dining, upscale shops and art galleries. Tin City, in the same area, is reminiscent of Naples’ nautical and fishing history. For more shopping, Mercato in North

With miles of sugar-white beaches and exquisite sunsets, it is no surprise The Travel Channel recognized Naples as “Best All Around Beach in Americaâ€? in 2005. Ten miles of public beach are available to swim, picnic, sunbathe and view manatees and dolphins. The Naples Pier lured the first tourists to the area for fishing, and it is still a popular draw today. Visitors can fish at no charge. Everglades National Park offers an interesting kayak-fishing excursion. Arrangements for charters can be made for more extensive fishing trips including deep-sea and shallow-water types. The beautiful Waterside Shops and The Village on Venetian Bay offer a vast selection of upscale stores, boutiques, cafĂŠs and restaurants at the north end of Naples. The stores at Waterside offer items as exquisite as the surroundings. The modern architecture and fountains provide a perfect setting for designer stores that include Cartier, DeBeers, Ferragamo, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. accommodations on seven miles of beachfront. The Ritz-Carlton, Naples provides a luxurious experience as well. It offers three miles of sandy beaches, private balconies overlooking the Gulf, seven restaurants, a sumptuous spa, and myriad activities, including tennis and golf. Guests can enjoy the 36-hole Tiburón Golf Club at The RitzCarlton Golf Resort, Naples, located about three miles away, with shuttle service provided. The Bellasera Hotel and the Inn on Fifth are elegant, sophisticated boutique hotels with close proximity to the Gulf. The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club is not only beautiful, but also historic. It has been under the direction of three generations of the Watkins family since 1946, who have spent millions in renovations to make it the deluxe resort that it is today. Summer is special as the hotel offers the SummerJazz on the Gulf free concert series on the Watkins Lawn.
Although Naples is cosmopolitan, its essence is tranquil. Eighty percent of the land in Collier County is protected, and includes the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, sanctuaries, preserves, parks and forests. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Naples Zoo are terrific examples of the area’s ecological wonders, and both attractions are ideal for kids. In the late 1800s, Kentucky U.S. Senator John S. Williams and publisher of the Louisville Courier-Journal, Walter Haldeman, envisioned developing the land. Following their arrival, Naples was elevated to “resort town” stature. Significant changes took place in the 1920s, thanks to Barron Collier, who purchased more than one million acres of land and later donated $1 million to help develop the Tamiami Trail linking Naples
He loves our golf course. She adores our spa. And they both look forward to dinner by the Gulf. and Miami in 1928. Naples’ popularity grew as magazine articles waxed lyrical about the attractive weather and abundant fish and game. Development did not soar, however, until after World War II, when U.S. servicemen who had been stationed in Collier County returned to the area. Within 30 years, the population of Collier County more than tripled. Insurance monies from Hurricane Donna in 1960 generated construction and growth snowballed. The growth trend is still taking place in Naples today. Naples is getting younger. According to the Economic Development Council, the age group 35-54 is the largest in Collier County and 75 percent of the population is under the retirement age. To paraphrase an advertising slogan: This is not your grandfather’s Naples; but it is still a place of natural beauty, history and culture.

Clockwise from top: Cabaret performers Johnny Rodgers, Tony DeSare and Sheera Ben-David are part of the Colony Hotel’s Royal Room summer lineup.
SHOW STOPPING STARS There’s no need to go to Manhattan to experience jaw-dropping cabaret. The Colony Hotel is bringing back the season’s favorite performers with its summer lineup every Friday and Saturday. “Music and fun, that’s what the Colony is offering every weekend in Palm Beach,” says Rob Russell, the hotel’s entertainment director. “From some of Manhattan’s top cabaret performers in the Royal Room to Motown Fridays and Saturday Night Cast Parties in Polo, there’s going to be good times for everyone as part of The Colony’s House Party weekends, [which lasts] through Labor Day.” Award-winning artist and songwriter Johnny Rodgers will perform July 3 and July 10-11. After a six-year hiatus, he makes his return to the Royal Room fresh from his role in Liza’s at the Palace on Broadway. Avery Sommers, known for her big voice and roles in Broadway shows including Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Chicago, will perform July 17-28, July 24-25 and July 31. On August 14-15 and August 21-22, singer and pianist Tony DeSare will please the crowd with his infectious take on classic standards. Back by popular demand, the saucy Sheera Ben-David will perform August 28-29 and September 4-5. A favorite for her comic numbers and ability to change the energy in a room, this is an act you won’t want to miss. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for dinner. FINALE v PERSONAL STYLE
1
ZAC POSEN was born into a creative family. His father is an abstract painter, his mother made belts in the ’60s and his grandmother was a pianist. As a child, Zac studied voice, dabbled in the violin and created dresses for his school friends. The 28-year-old designer established his eponymous clothing line in late 2001. His collections, which capture a woman’s strength and femininity, were an immediate hit with celebrities, fashion editors and fashionistas. While New York City is his home and the home base for his company, South Florida is also sentimental for Zac. “I do have a large community of very close friends that live in Boca Raton. Some of my best and oldest girlfriends live here.” —Lola Thélin
