hen we initially set out to produce a resource guide of Palm Beach County’s most prominent business leaders, 100 seemed like a reasonable number. However, as we researched the area’s largest companies and industries, it quickly became clear that 100 would only begin to scratch the surface of the Palm Beaches’ top talent. There’s no place in the world like our slice of South Florida. It boasts unique industries, such as the equestrian universe in Wellington (read about its economic impact on page 9), exporting (find facts on the active Port of Palm Beach on page 10), and a robust scientific research community making groundbreaking discoveries (we dive in on page 12). And of course, when considering the beauty of this paradise we call home, it’s no surprise that we enjoy a thriving tourism and hospitality industry. Or, that hedge fund managers with billions in assets are opting to ditch the frigid Northeast for our shores. Beginning on page 16, you’ll discover our sampling of the need-toknow men and women who are making a difference in their respective fields and in the community. Those who were selected run the gamut of born-and-bred Palm Beachers to transplants. Some employ hundreds or even thousands. They hail from diverse backgrounds and are well-traveled, well-educated, and philanthropic. In the inaugural issue of The Palm Beach 100, these leaders share wisdom collected from their extensive careers and personal experience. We hope that their words will impact your outlook on business in the Palm Beaches as well as your own future endeavors.

There is no “quick fix” to the issues facing our community. Instead, progress comes from the collaboration between leaders and residents. This fall, the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties hosted the second year of On the Table, a civic engagement initiative where thousands of people from all backgrounds participate in conversations about how to cultivate a stronger community. Private homes, local restaurants, farms, and hospitals are just some of the locations for both public and private tables. Anyone can host a table and the conversation can go in any direction. The intimacy and diversity of each discussion makes On the Table a unique gathering. Often times civic engagement initiatives are built on the idea of fixing problems and discussing the downfalls of a community. Eric Aquino, the lead on the 2019 project, believes that the key to On the Table’s success is its way of disarming people. “With On the Table, the first question right off the bat is ‘What do you love about your area?’” Aquino says. “We are building from a place of strength and it galvanizes people around what they love, more so than just what is going wrong.” More than 3,500 residents participated in the project’s first year. Aquino hopes to achieve an even greater community representation as the event gains steam. (yourcommunity foundation.org) —Chloe Krammel

The Scientific Method These local research institutions are transforming Palm Beach County—and the world—with cutting-edge research and futuristic innovations developing right in our backyard By Chloe Krammel Scripps Research Since its founding in 2004, Scripps Research, Florida has contributed an estimated $3 billion economic impact in Palm Beach County—and that’s without accounting for its many spinoff companies. Located across 30 lush acres in Jupiter, Scripps houses dozens of principal investigators working to understand disease and develop effective treatments. Explains Dr. Douglas Bingham, executive vice president of Florida operations, “What we wanted to do with the Florida campus is evolve a set of tools for scientists to use to translate the discoveries we made—and are going to make—relating to what causes disease in order to create therapies to cure or mitigate the symptoms of the disease.” Pioneering studies from the Florida campus include how the Zika virus crosses the placental barrier and harms the fetus, and how to protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. (scripps.edu)

Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience “Insight must precede application” is the guiding philosophy at this research institution. With headquarters in Munich, Germany, Max Planck Florida is the first and only institute of its kind in North America. Researchers have the freedom to pursue curiosity-driven research at the highest levels, resulting in continuous international recognition of this campus. Recent developments include a partnership with Zeiss, a leading imaging technology company, which will help researchers discover insights into the inner workings of the brain, and groundbreaking research on the Rab protein’s impact on memory. Says Dr. David Fitzpatrick, Max Planck Florida’s CEO and scientific director, “The world-class science, the unique training environment, the strong institutional collaboration, and the loyal support of our local community, together, create a powerful synergy that will continue to drive our

From lab techs to professors, Florida Atlantic University brings an edge to South Florida’s life sciences consortium. Doubling as both an educational and research institution, FAU has programs that span the sciences and mathematics. Cutting-edge studies include the use of marine natural compounds as potential treatments of breast cancers and the use of artificial intelligence to detect and manage Alzheimer’s. With the budding life sciences job market, FAU has integrated research from neighboring institutions into its undergraduate programs to better prepare the next generation of employees. The university also focuses on the clinical needs of Palm Beach County. “We are Palm Beach County’s medical university,” says Dr. Gregg B. Fields, executive director of FAU’s Institute for Human Health & Disease Intervention. “We belong to the community. We have an obligation to do cutting-edge research that can benefit the people [who live] down here.” FAU uses its research and academia to solve the final puzzle piece for the local science gateway: populating the region with the talent necessary to support this growing industry. The Palm Beach 100 WEALTH REPORT

Libra Rising Facebook is launching a new digital currency—but is the world ready? Cryptocurrency is nothing new—it’s been in circulation since the 2009 launch of Bitcoin—but the digital asset’s volatility has prevented the masses from embracing it. That could change in 2020 when social media giant Facebook plans to make a new currency called Libra available to users of Facebook and its other holdings, such as WhatsApp and Instagram. Facebook is a founding member of the nonprofit Libra Association, which is developing the virtual money along with other companies and academic institutions. What makes Libra different from other cryptocurrencies, says Honghui Chen, professor of finance at the University of Central Florida, is that it will be less volatile and also more convenient to use via Calibra, an online account that Facebook describes as a “digital wallet.” Through social media, users will be able to view their balance in Calibra depicted in their local currency. They can spend, transfer, send, and store the digital money in their Calibra account and also

By Judy Martel

use it with partners in the Libra Association. Facebook is seeking to reduce the volatility of Libra by not tying its value to an algorithm or a single currency, but rather to a more stable asset or group of assets. One possibility is to value each unit based on a basket of international currencies, says Chen. The other is to peg the value to so-called “stable coin,” which itself is tied to a relatively stable asset, such as gold or government-backed legal tender. Social media’s global reach—some 2 billion users worldwide in the case of Facebook—makes it an ideal platform for international commerce, but there are concerns about security and privacy in the wake of Facebook’s recent lapses. Chen believes that because the Libra Association comprises a group of entities, it creates more layers of security. To further address privacy concerns, Facebook is setting up Calibra as a separate business entity and says it won’t share spending data with other holdings unless users grant permission.

But global regulatory concerns still loom large for the association and could delay its planned midyear launch. Some companies have already pulled out of the association, and France and Germany are reportedly pledging to block Libra in Europe. If the association is successful in launching Libra, the question about what Facebook gains from developing a new currency remains. Getting into the digital currency game before its competitors could allow Facebook to strengthen its brand and potentially increase its number of users if they join because of Calibra. Among other tech giants, Amazon offers its own digital wallet for customers, but Chen says he wouldn’t be surprised if it creates a digital currency in the future. Apple Pay is a successful online payment system, but it is hardware dependent in that it requires an Apple device. However, being first has its risks. Because Libra is new and untested, Chen advises caution. “I can see the system improving as it grows—but test the water and add money little by little as you feel comfortable.”
