BROWARD CULTURAL DIVISION All great cities of commerce are also great cities of culture. There are no exceptions. — Rosa Sugranes, CEO and president, Iberia Tiles Corp.

a& e 14

Today, the Broward County arts and culture industry finds itself at the center of a “perfect economic storm.” In the midst of challenging economic times, the creative industries of Broward County have continued an upward trend, with a 21 percent increase in 2009, and a new vision for the future of arts and culture is being born—in a 2020 Community Cultural Plan. Some say that seeds are best planted in fallow land—land left for a while to rest and re-energize—and this may be that time for many in this global economy. Naturally, the arts have not been spared, resulting in reduced funding and contributions from earned income, corporations, individuals, foundations and all levels of government. The vision, however, is strong and the torch continues with works of public art coming to fruition and an economic recovery stimulus package awarded to the county’s Cultural Division for use by cultural organizations to save jobs. Indeed, these are not resting times. Time and time again, studies show that arts-centric businesses are the fastest growing segment of the nation’s economy and include museums and collections; performing arts; visual arts/photography; film, radio and TV; design and publishing; and art schools and services. Currently, Broward County has more than 5,500 arts-related businesses and 21,000 employees within these businesses and ranks fourth in number of artists in the workforce nationwide. The county’s nonprofit sector generates $153.95 million in local economic activity and supports 4,258 full-time nonprofit jobs. Nonprofits spend $66.65 million in labor, wages, supplies and services, and this generates $84.56 million in local resident household income and delivers $14.64 million in local and state government revenue. Recent research also shows that creative-based jobs are going to be the jobs of the future, so although we may be in a financial crunch now, it is vital to continue planning the long-term vision for our creative sector. Taking stock and regrouping while designing a vision for the future is a dynamite combination— prudence and hope wrapped into a creative seed. The 2020 Community Cultural Plan will be the community’s cultural blueprint for the next 10 years. This strategic plan will embrace our diverse population throughout three component plans focused on the creative economy, cultural tourism, and public art and design. The Plan will provide a comprehensive needs assessment, vision, drafts of legislation, policy framework, recommendations, strategies, funding requirements, viable funding sources, evaluation instruments and benchmarks. The planning process will be assisted by hundreds of volunteers in the community, with the steering committee chaired by BankAtlantic President Jarett Levan. Emerging themes presented in committee include public funding, diversity, leadership development, audience development and marketing, stability of arts organizations, collaborations among cultural institutions, and the structure of the Broward Cultural Division. The arts and culture industry is gearing itself toward a bright future with leadership vision and sterling artistry. It is a great time to be a part of this community. Mary A. Becht Director

Destination Culture RIVERWALK ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT

Its reputation as a seasonal “sun and sand” destination only begins to define contemporary Fort Lauderdale. With an extensive mix of year-round entertainment options—music, art, drama, dance, history and more—as well as galleries, shopping and fine dining, today’s Fort Lauderdale is a international destination for anyone seeking a uniquely refined cultural experience. Many of the area’s top arts and entertainment organizations are clustered along the scenic New River in the downtown city center, creating a vibrant destination known officially as the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District. You’ll find it rich in attractions that will keep you busy from morning to night, including these five institutions that help define the District.

Broward Center for the Performing Arts Set against the tropical backdrop of the New River, with a commanding view of downtown Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Center is home to 700 events annually and the anchor of the Riverwalk A&E District. From classical to jazz, pop favorites to grand opera, and the best of Broadway, there’s something for everyone. It is consistently ranked among the top 10 venues in worldwide ticket sales. The Center is a leader in developing educational arts integration programs and fostering alliances that build strong communities. The Center also manages Parker Playhouse, Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University and Miramar Cultural Center/Arts Park. 201 S.W. Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale Under the auspices of Nova Southeastern University, the Museum is one of Florida’s most important cultural showcases. This striking facility, located in the heart of the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, specializes in exhibitions that draw crowds from around the globe. As a center for gatherings, the Museum Café is an ideal spot to enjoy Illy coffee or a glass of wine after exploring a new exhibition. In addition, the Museum’s Studio School offers 10-week art courses for adults and students. Classes in painting, drawing, design, art history, and musical theatre are all taught by professional artists. Complimentary general admission is available on the third Thursday of every month. 1 E. Florida Grand Opera Celebrating its 69th season of presenting world-class performances, Florida Grand Opera is one of the state’s leading companies, producing classic repertoire rich in romance, drama and adventure as well as lesser-known works from the great composers. Its operatic legacy thrives in its Young Artist Studio, a residency for talented young singers. Internationally recognized as a top training program, the Studio selects eight professional singers, from hundreds who apply each year, who serve as ambassadors of opera and the “face” of Florida Grand Opera in the community. 221 S.W. Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale fgo.org | 954-728-9700

Fort Lauderdale History Center Go back in time at the Fort Lauderdale History Center, which brings history to life and preserves it for the enrichment of present and future generations. Located on the New River, its four historic buildings include The New River Inn (1905), The Philemon Bryan House (1905), The Acetylene Building (1905), and The King-Cromartie House Museum (1907). The site includes a replica of Broward County’s first schoolhouse and the Hoch Heritage Center, a research library featuring historic photographs and extensive material on Fort Lauderdale. Exhibits are offered throughout the year. Experience life as it was a century ago. 219 S.W. Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale oldfortlauderdale.org | 954-463-4431

Historic Stranahan House Museum Built in 1901 by Frank Stranahan (the “Father of Fort Lauderdale”) and wife Ivy (the city’s first school teacher), Stranahan House was the epicenter of the area’s activity. Initially designed as a trading post for Seminole Indians, it also served as a community center, post office and bank for local businessmen. Though originally the largest house on the New River, it’s now dwarfed by development along its banks, but has been preserved as a charming museum. Tours offer a glimpse into Florida’s pioneer life and are supplemented by memorable seasonal events such as “Ghost Tours” in October and the Victorian Christmas evenings that take you back in time. 335 S.E. SUPERCITY Fort Lauderdale takes center stage for pro football’s biggest game of the year and many of the events leading up to it. BY JASON DAVIS

SUPER HISTORY 2010 MARKS THE RECORDSETTING 10TH TIME FOR A SUPER BOWL TO BE HELD IN SOUTH FLORIDA. (NEW ORLEANS IS NEXT, WITH NINE.) HERE’S A LOOK AT THE PREVIOUS GAMES.

20

If there ever were a perfect example of truth in labeling, it is this: The organizers of the biggest two-week period in professional football call themselves the “South Florida Super Bowl XLIV Host Committee.” Look at the logo they’ve created for the occasion— right there, underneath the big, chunky Roman numerals. See? Not Miami, but South Florida. It’s an important distinction that exceeds geographic boundaries. It is a clear, deliberate statement that the big game, and all that surrounds it, belongs to the entire region. Though the game itself is Miami’s domain—because that’s where the stadium is, Land Shark Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins—just about every other significant aspect of the Super Bowl belongs to Fort Lauderdale, with the Riverwalk A&E District an obvious gathering point for football fans and party lovers alike. It is the home for the NFL’s traveling headquarters, with every high-ranking league official, from Commissioner Roger Goodell on down, holding court. It is the home for the international media center, with some 3,500 reporters from around the world filing daily stories with FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., datelines. It is the home for the players, lodging in officially designated luxury hotels near and along Fort Lauderdale Beach. It is the home for league-sanctioned ancillary events, including one of the biggest charity events of the year. It is, in short, the home for everything that makes the Super Bowl, well ... the Super Bowl. And it’s a chance for all of South Florida to shine, says

Rodney Barreto, chairman of the host committee. “There’s a reason why South Florida hosts so many huge events attracting people from around the world. Besides our brilliant weather and beautiful scenery, no community is as unique and diverse as ours,” says Barreto, who also served as host committee chairman in 2007, when South Florida last hosted a Super Bowl. “This is an amazing opportunity for us to show the world that South Florida is not only one of the world’s finest communities, but it’s the premiere Super Bowl destination. Not just for this year, but for years to come.” More than just the promise of a great football game, the Super Bowl has an impact in ways that other sports events simply don’t. Besides the nightly celebrity-studded parties that captivate residents and visitors alike—the 2007 Super Bowl in South Florida was the most lavish to date, with spending on parties and other activities estimated at $195 million by PricewaterhouseCoopers—hosting a Super Bowl leaves a legacy in the community, the effects not seen until well after the final gun. Economic Impact: Leading up to the game, officials projected more than 150,000 visitors to the area, cumulatively pumping $350 million or more directly into the cash registers of hotels, restaurants, retailers, entertainment venues and other businesses. And with the addition of the Pro Bowl—the NFL’s annual all-star game—at Land Shark Stadium on the Sunday before the Super Bowl for the first

time, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated another $100 million for the region, adding that it’s difficult to predict a figure because the Pro Bowl had been held in Honolulu since 1980. (In December 2008, the NFL announced that the game would alternate between Hawaii and the mainland going forward.) “This is the perfect time for our economy to have the Super Bowl,” says Nicki E. Grossman, the CVB’s president and a member of the host committee. “It’s a trough for local small businesses to feed so they can participate in the victory of having the Super Bowl in town.” Community Service: In an effort to directly and positively influence youth in indigent neighborhoods, the league in 1993 established its Youth Education Towns—educational and recreational centers constructed in Super Bowl cities to serve as a lasting benefit of hosting the game. For 2010, the NFL has committed $500,000 toward funding the YET Center at Fort Lauderdale’s Lester H. White Boys and Girls Club, which was built when South Florida hosted the 1999 Super Bowl. YET Centers are designed to meet community needs, providing educational assistance, job training, technical training, life-skills development, and recreational outlets with such facilities as libraries, classrooms, technology laboratories, physical fitness centers and recreation fields. SUPERCITY

THOUGH THE SUPER BOWL AND THE PRO BOWL WILL BE PLAYED AT LAND SHARK STADIUM, THIS IS FORT LAUDERDALE’S MOMENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT, TOO, WITH THE TEAM HOTELS, LEAGUE HEADQUARTERS AND MAJOR EVENTS PLANNED HERE.

22

Super Bowl in Minneapolis, with one top chef from each NFL city serving up their specialties alongside an alumni player from each team in a food-tasting extravaganza to raise money for local and national hunger organizations. It’s considered one of the league’s premier events, staged on the eve of the Super Bowl, with nearly $7 million raised. The league designated the Broward County Convention Center as the site for the 2010 edition, with ticket prices starting at $500. Allen Susser, of Chef Allen’s in Aventura, and Earl Morrall, who quarterbacked the Dolphins to an unbeaten season in 1972, represent South Florida. To be sure, there are other events with impact—details often aren’t finalized until the last minute—associated with the Super Bowl, but chief among all of them is the game itself, played by the NFL’s top two teams after a 16-game regular season and three rounds of playoffs The worldwide atten-

tion a host community receives is unsurpassed; the 2009 Super Bowl in Tampa was the most-watched program in American TV history, with 151.6 million U.S. viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, and was broadcast to 230 countries in 34 languages. And while residents of a host city are encouraged to snap up as many tickets as possible for the preliminary events, the reality is that tickets to the Super Bowl itself are nearly impossible to obtain. According to the NFL, nearly 75 percent of the tickets are distributed to the league’s 32 teams—the host team gets 5 percent of the allotment for use or sale—with the remaining 25 percent going to the league, corporate sponsors, media, charities and the host committee. But take heart—veteran Super Bowl observers will tell you the best seat in the house for the big game is the best seat in your house, or perhaps a sports bar, with other football fans. Watching it on television means you can see replays, get sideline analysis and enjoy the often-entertaining commercials. Besides, after two weeks of parties and special events in Fort Lauderdale leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, you’ll probably enjoy spending a little time on a couch or a bar stool, anyway.

Late-night food lovers, we have good news. It’s time to eat, drink and be merry. It goes without saying that a great meal is an essential part of any great night on the town, whether you’re going to a concert, a theater performance, a museum exhibit or something else. But maybe you’ve been working under the impression that dining after dark goes straight to the waistline, so you cut back once the sun goes down. Relax. It’s just a myth. Independent studies released during the summer of 2009 by Johns Hopkins University and Oregon Health and Science University showed no actual difference between day and night when it comes to the pleasures of the table. Science is squarely on your side, so feel free to go ahead and sample everything Fort Lauderdale’s best restaurants have to offer. The only real issue you might have to address now is, where do you want to go? Fortunately, restaurants in the Riverwalk A&E District and those nearby offer

what seems to be an unlimited number of options for exceptional late-night dining. Variety is one of the hallmarks of Truluck’s, located at Fort Lauderdale’s upscale Galleria shopping center. The restaurant is known for its wide array of seafood dishes as well as a vast wine list. “There really are no set rules,” says general manager Scott Gardiner when asked about the types of dishes guests frequently seek once the evening is in full roar. “You’re just as likely to see someone ordering the king crab or our Naked Fish,” a simple, grilled catch in a lemon-garlic-butter sauce. Other favorites include East and West coast oysters, crab claws, calamari, Hawaiian wahoo, halibut and blackened grouper. Carnivores, meanwhile, relish the juicy steak Oscar and Niman Ranch sirloin. Likewise, Shooters Waterfront Café enjoys a reputation as a must-do for indoor/outdoor dining and live entertainment. Its position overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway makes it an attractive destination for post-theater crowds looking for a casual bite to eat

and something to drink before calling it a night. Late-arriving crowds overwhelmingly seek lighter fare, says Lauren Davila, a manager at the restaurant. “Dishes such as peel-and-eat shrimp and appetizers always are popular,” she says, adding that burgers and pasta dishes also have their share of fans. For nearly 30 years, 15th Street Fisheries at Lauderdale Marina has given guests a dock house environment and tried-and-true tastes. It’s an excellent place to relax while watching boats pass by. Each level of the two-story restaurant has its own menu. Downstairs, moderately priced standards such as clams, oysters and sandwiches lead the way. Upstairs is more refined, with a panoramic view and elegant seafood dishes. Also on the waterfront, celebrity chef Todd English’s da Campo Osteria is still generating a buzz more than a year after its November 2008 overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. The menu features a range of inventive Italian dishes that emphasize Tuscan cuisine from a wood-burning oven. And speaking of restaurants with a pedigree, the sizzling Steak 954 is the first South Florida venture for Stephen Starr, the man behind Buddakan and Morimoto in Philadelphia and New York City, who appropriately compares dining out to “attending a theater production, where the players, props, backdrops, lighting and rapport are integral components of an overall dramatic effect.” Such flair seems naturally conducive to a post-entertainment crowd. Oys-

ters, seafood-coconut ceviche, tuna and Kobe beef sliders appeal to those seeking something light. Meantime, Trina Restaurant and Lounge allows guests to embark upon a tantalizing journey of the Mediterranean with the flavors of southern Europe, northern Africa and the Middle East. Executive chef Farid Oualidi’s menu seems to be designed with latenight bites in mind, featuring such favorites as bouillabaise, lobster and scallop risotto, sea bass and imaginative brick-oven flatbreads. Looking for something even later? Shula’s on the Beach has one of the latest dinner menus around, serving until 11 p.m. daily, and a bar offering libations until midnight (1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). It’s part of the Shula’s family of steakhouses and is revered for its exceptional beef selections, including the fashionable Steak Mary Ann. But what if you’re not part of the dine-late crowd? A number of restaurants have recognized the demand and have created pre-theater, prix fixe menus. One of the more popular ones is at The Grill Room on Las Olas. The restaurant offers sophisticated ambiance, attentive service and an extensive wine list, along with a “Pre-Theater Menu” offered seasonally. The three-course dinners feature soup, salad or appetizer, a choice of entrees, and dessert. When you’re on the town for an evening’s entertainment, food and drink are always a must. To that, we say, enjoy ... no matter what time it is.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT, ESTABLISHMENTS SUCH AS SHOOTERS WATERFRONT CAFE, TRINA RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE, AND THE GRILL ROOM ON LAS OLAS OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERY PALATE.

BIG TIME THE PERFECT WATCH—AT ANY SIZE—IS ESSENTIAL FOR STAYING FASHIONABLY ON SCHEDULE FOR ANY EVENT.

BY BEN SCHILLING

Watches hold a special place in the fashion world. Nothing else simultaneously serves the seemingly contradictory roles of “usefulness” and “bling” the way a timepiece does. Luxury brand names remain the gold standard for watches, even as styles and tastes change over time. That’s due in large part to the leading makers’ commitment to the precision mechanics of their timepieces—a concern that equals or surpasses physical aesthetics, experts say. The most coveted watches are prized because they work and look great for that night on the town. Oversized watches—the kind that you might have trouble hiding underneath a sleeve—are still very much in vogue, according to an informal survey of area jewelers. Manufacturers are happily producing so-called “big bang” watches for eager shoppers these days; men’s watch heads, for example, routinely exceed 40 millimeters (approximately 2 inches). This has been the case for at least five years, says Ed That’s no surprise to Robin Levinson, owner of Levinson JewDikes, owner of Weston Jewelers on Main Street, and he has a suspicion why. “The Baby Boomer genera- elers on Las Olas Boulevard, who confirms the ongoing trend totion is getting older, so companies are making bigger ward “big.” But, she adds, it may not work for everyone. “We try to watches so people can read them without their glass- place the right watch with the right person,” she says. “The visual aspect, of course, has to match the individual, but it’s also impores,” he says with a slight chuckle. Dikes says Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, tant to find out what they’re about and what their criteria are.” Brands such as Panarai, Jaeger-LeCoutre, Franck Muller, Bulgari, IWC, Hublot and Breitling are popular brands for his clients, and he is seeing a move away from heavy, diamond- TW Steel are mainstays, Levinson says, adding that her clients gladly laden watches and toward the “simple, understated buy more expensive timepieces—even splurging on limited-edition items—because they know the quality is an excellent investment. elegance” of tourbillon-based timepieces, with perhaps Along those lines, Patrick Daoud, owner of Daoud’s Fine Jewone exception: pro athletes, who are “somewhat more elry on Sunrise Boulevard, says collectors are getting creative when outgoing” and still prefer something “kind of blingy.” it comes to obtaining their next timepieces—pre-owned watches are big business. “Value is where it’s at,” he says, and classic brands such as Cartier, Rolex and Patek Philippe have constant demand at every price point. So what does a watch say about its owner? “I’m not sure you can make that kind of a call,” Daoud says. “The watch you wear depends on the application. Rolex has a ‘sporty’ look, but you might want something else to go to the theater.” Watch aficionados who visit Bal Harbour Shops are familiar with the retailers that have a presence there, including Graff, Chopard, Fendi, Van Cleef & Arpels and Piaget—whose Black Tie, Limelight, Dancer and Creative watch collections seem appropriately named for arts-and-entertainment audiences. 26

MEMORY MAKERS CONCIERGES AT THE AREA’S FINEST HOTELS STAND READY TO SERVE ALMOST ANY GUEST REQUEST. II LUGANO HOTEL

BY DAVE SZYMANSKI

The word “concierge” is said to have originated in Old World France, where a palace’s comte des cierges tended to the needs of visiting nobility. Meaning “keeper of the candles,” the phrase has evolved into one word that refers to a person whose job is to provide superior levels of service. At top hotels throughout the world, sophisticated travelers depend on concierges to serve in a variety of capabilities—as an invaluable source of local information, a trusted confidante, and, sometimes, miracle worker. Most requests they receive are routine—dinner reservations, theater tickets or information about local cultural activities, for example—but others are more challenging. Either way, they love their work and they’re ready to help. When you check in, they listen and look beyond their hotel property to make every stay one to remember for years. We recently spoke with head concierges at some of Fort Lauderdale’s leading hotels about what they do, why they do it, and some of their favorite stories. 28

Otto Rizvani | Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Rizvani has been a concierge for 10 years and has been with the Westin since its March 2009 opening. He recently won a TripAdvisor.com award for service. • Favorite memory: “When I came here, we had just opened. About two months in, a gentleman was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. We didn’t have anything set up around the pool. So I worked with staff and we set up a table, with candles, champagne and strawberries. She said yes … thank God.” • Most unusual request: “Someone asked for a boat to rent for a night scuba [dive]. I provided the information, including the safety information, but I’m not sure if they went at night. I arranged a scuba outing for another guest and they successfully went three days in a row at 8:30 a.m.” • About his job: “What we do is take someone, a stranger, in a different place, take their experience, ‘own’ it and make it a bigger and better experience. It’s not just our hotel, but the whole area. There’s scuba, kayaking, parasailing. It could be all over the coast. Or

Florida. Not just Fort Lauderdale. I love my job. It’s the best job in the world.” Rafael Bruce Riverside Hotel Bruce has been a concierge for two years, all at the Riverside. He twice has earned in-house honors for customer service and has had Mobil and W FORT LAUDERDALE AAA standards training. • What he loves: “The best part is the networking—the network you build and the amount of people you know that you can tap into and make your guest’s stay better. You [usually] know someone who can enhance the situation. It’s the enhancing of service. For example, if I send someone to a restaurant and make a reservation, if I know the manager, I can have the manager greet them like a VIP. At Bova Prime, one of my local favorites, the manager will acknowledge them and make them feel special. It makes a difference.” • Favorite memory: “I like to explore and experience fine dining and nightlife and that helps me build up feedback from venues that I can use with guests. Sometimes you are the hero because you help them out of a situation. For example, a couple from Wales came to our hotel and said they missed their cruise while waiting for their luggage. They only missed the first day. I arranged for a way to get their luggage. I arranged for them to get a trip to Orlando to pick up the cruise from there [and] I got them a hotel there. They e-mailed me and told me to come to the UK and be their guest. We made a difference in someone’s life.” Alana Bobkowski | Il Lugano Hotel Bobkowski has been with Il Lugano since January 2007, is a member of the South Florida Concierge Association, and treasures thank-you cards. • What she loves: “Meeting people. Doing the unexpected. For example, a lady stayed with us and we heard her sister recently passed away. We [sent to her room] wine, fruit and cheeses. She came crying to me. It was more than she expected … a gourmet display.” • Favorite memory: “A family came for Christmas. They were displaced from their home [and they asked] us to create a Christmas theme in their room. We went to stores, bought a tree and wreaths, and hung stockings. We really went for it. They were beyond surprise. That was great fun.” • Most unusual request: “We had a guest from Canada who lost her passport. We had to really think out of the box and get her home. We got her to and from Miami. We called the Canadian consulate to get her a passport. We do things like that.” • About her job: “We are a close-knit group. We work seven days a week, 24-hour days. If you mention a birthday or anniversary, we love going the extra mile. And we feel great when those guests come back to see us.”

Julio Feliciano | W Fort Lauderdale Feliciano has been with W since April 2009 and a concierge for three years overall. He is an active member of the Gold Coast Concierge Association. • What he loves: “The diversity of all the requests that I get from guests. Every guest has a different request with a different story and wish to fulfill, which makes the job very exciting every day. We have a ‘Whatever/Whenever’ service philosophy [and that] opens the doors for some really amazing requests and gives us a chance to put our creativity to the test.” • Favorite memory: “We had a guest who was coming to the hotel to celebrate his anniversary and really wanted to surprise his wife. He’d asked us to fill the entire room with balloons, and I mean the entire room, from floor to ceiling. We ended up placing more than 1,000 balloons into the suite so that it looked like it was filled with large translucent bubbles. He was very grateful that we could help him give her such a great surprise.” • About his job: “We try to make dreams come true for our guests, whether it’s helping to coordinate grand gestures or just the sweet, simple things to make their experience a real ‘wow.’ As ‘cool hunters,’ we’re basically liaisons between guests and the city to get them to the best happenings around town and in our hotel.” Paul McGannon | The Atlantic Hotel McGannon has been a concierge for more than four years—more than three at The Atlantic. He was the hotel’s 2008 employee of the year. • What he loves: “Fort Lauderdale is an amazing destination. I love welcoming people to our beautiful city and showing them a great time. I live to travel, and the people you meet along the way that truly know and love their home will leave you with incredible memories. Experiencing the best of any destination provides a memory that will last forever.” • Favorite memory: “A family had stayed with us for a few days prior to leaving on a Christmas-week Caribbean cruise. An hour [after leaving], the father called with a hysterical teenager in the background. His daughter had left her formal dresses in the closet, the boat was due to depart in 45 minutes, and they would need the gowns for Christmas dinner and the other formal nights. I jumped in the hotel car and rushed to Port Everglades, arriving 15 minutes prior to departure with the gowns in hand, handing them off to a beaming father.” • Most unusual request: “A frequent guest called a month prior to arrange VIP tickets to [an auto race at] Sebring. He wanted to go up for the day, rent a golf cart, and spend the night at a local hotel. Most of the hotels in Sebring were completely booked. Golf carts were only available for VIPs. ... I called one of the local hotel managers, who finally agreed to release a room. Unfortunately, the room pricing and terms were [expensive], so the next and only option was to rent an RV. My guest rented an RV, drove up to Sebring for the day, and after lots of convincing the track manager that they were VIPs, they were given a private golf cart and VIP access to the track for the day.”

SHALL WE DANCE? THE ANNUAL FLAMENCO IN THE SUN FESTIVAL GIVES VISITORS A DELICIOUS TASTE OF SPAIN.

AT THE 2009 FESTIVAL, “FLAMENCO 24 HORAS” BY PAOLA ESCOBAR (LEFT) USED THE TRADITIONAL ART FORM TO EXPRESS CONTEMPORARY REALITY.

BY ERIC ALDER

It is impossible to escape flamenco’s magical spell. Hands clapping. Heels stamping. The seductive rhythm of the acoustic guitar. Passionate singing. Dresses twirling. Even after one quick look, you think to yourself, “Now that is art.” Summer in Fort Lauderdale makes room for this sultry, centuries-old spectacle each year during Flamenco in the Sun, an annual celebration of the art and culture with roots in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Now in its eighth year, the festival salutes myriad aspects of Spanish culture, from cuisine to mixed media. But flamenco—collectively, by tradition, the baile (dancer), the cante (singer) and the guitarra (guitarist)—remains at the heart of the experience. Flamenco traces its genesis to the Middle Ages, arising from the unique mix of Gypsy, Moorish and Sephardic people who lived in Andalusia. What they created has influenced the entertainment of many other cultures, particularly those in Latin America and the Caribbean, over time. “I think people are attracted to flamenco because it is very fresh, very visual, very beautiful and very complex all at the same time,” says festival co-director Damaris Ferrer. “It’s very ‘in your face.’ ” And it continues to evolve. In the modern era, flamenco has proved to be malleable enough to incorporate classical and contemporary dance styles with other musical elements, such as jazz and Middle Eastern music. Its inclusive nature makes it readily accessible to today’s audiences, says Ferrer, a performer herself and the director of Bailes Ferrer, a nonprofit dance troupe she established in 1995. Indeed, accessibility is the buzzword for Flamenco in the Sun. Not only does the festival present all facets of the art form— from traditional to experimental—but, with support from the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District in 2009 after five years presenting in South Florida and New York, it has expanded to celebrate all dimensions of Spanish culture, including gallery exhibits, cooking demonstrations, concerts, fashion, films and photography. At its home at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, there are educational opportunities aplenty for adults and children alike, including master classes and workshops in dance, guitar, percussion and more. “The idea is to offer something for everyone, a good mix of affordable and free events, which creates a lot of opportunities for the public to get involved,” Ferrer says. “I think we really achieved a nice balance [in 2009]. It was awesome. And we’re looking forward to what we can do in the future.”

Wouldn’t it be great if Saturday Night Live came with a gourmet dinner? No, that’s not wishful thinking. Indeed, it is essentially what you’ll enjoy with Laffing Matterz at the Broward Center, a unique comedy-and-dining experience that now makes its home in the Abdo New River Room. It is a three-hour proposition taking place Thursdays through Sundays, featuring fresh, award-winning fare followed by fresh, always-topical comedy. Start with Executive Chef John Eustace’s menu, which includes favorites such as beef tenderloin, Dijon-tarragon chicken, crab-stuffed shrimp, vegetarian ravioli, Chilean sea bass as well as nightly chef’s selections. Desserts range from cream puffs in hot fudge to Key lime pie. For the nightcap, get ready for a menu of satire that leaves nothing sacred: the absurdities of South Florida living, construction on Interstate 95, cosmetic surgery, national politics and everything in between. Relying heavily on musical spoofs in the tradition of Capitol Steps—except with original songs instead of parodies—the cast of multitalented entertainers serves up surprises at every performance, which means audiences can attend several times a year and not see the same show. The result is a combination that has won numerous honors, including fivestar ratings from Trip Advisor and recognition as “Best Dinner Theater” by the Broward-Palm Beach edition of New Times, which also deemed it “a classy date” and “full of creative men and women who create hilarious cultural and musical satire” with “delicious food” and “extraordinary service.” Laffing Matterz ran successfully elsewhere in Fort Lauderdale for more than three years before relocating to the Broward Center. Audiences now may choose seating at tables of four, six, eight and 10—making it perfect for couples, friends, coworkers, families and groups. It’s also known as a great event for celebrations of all kinds. “The Broward Center is one of the premier entertainment venues in the region, and we are delighted to call it our new home,” says Rita Wells, who, with husband Mark, is one of the creative forces behind the troupe.

GETTING AROUND IT’S EASY TO EXPLORE THE RIVERWALK ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT.

“The District” refers generally to the area of downtown Fort Lauderdale beginning at Avenue of the Arts (to the west) and continuing along the Riverwalk, Himmarshee Boulevard and Las Olas Boulevard almost as far as the Intracoastal Waterway (to the east). It is located near Fort Lauderdale’s famous beaches and only minutes away from major highways, Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Whether you come by car or cab, arrive by water taxi or Sun Trolley, a fantastic experience is in store. Once you’re there, getting around is easy. Most attractions are within an easy walk. Alternatively, just wave and the Sun Trolley will stop for you and take you to your next District destination. Or, for a real Riverwalk treat, travel by rickshaw from place to place. 74

TRAVELING BY CAR • FROM INTERSTATE 95: Exit Broward Boulevard east. Right on Avenue of the Arts (Southwest Seventh Avenue). Left on Himmarshee Street (Southwest Second Street). Parking available in garages along this street before and after railroad tracks and at Las Olas Riverfront. Right on Southwest Second Street. Parking available in garages along this street before and after railroad tracks and at Las Olas Riverfront. To access Las Olas Boulevard, continue on Andrews Avenue past Southwest Second Street and turn left on Las Olas Boulevard.
