Editor’s note

Time flies...

© LILA PHOTO

A

s I sit here writing this issue’s editor’s note, I’m realizing that this time two years ago I was wrapping up my very first issue of Stuart Magazine as editor in chief. I had already worked on a couple of issues that were in the works when I came on board, but the July/August 2020 issue was the very first one I put together from start to finish. I remember being so excited to get started when I became editor that January. There were so many people I couldn’t wait to meet, so many ideas I wanted to discuss, so much I planned to do.... And then, COVID. Suddenly, I found myself holed up in my home office, Zooming and texting and emailing. Instead of going out in the community and getting to know people in person, I was joining any Facebook group I could find pertaining to Martin and St. Lucie counties to see what people were up to. Planning photo shoots became less about brainstorming concepts and more about handling logistics like subjects who weren’t comfortable being around their friends yet, let alone an entire photo crew. But we managed, and I enjoyed every minute of it. And guess what? I recently learned that Stuart Magazine has been named a finalist for “Best Overall Magazine” in its category for Florida Magazine Association’s annual Charlie Awards! It’s a huge honor to be nominated, and I’m so proud of our entire team for pulling together during tough times and creating the publication we are today. (Congrats, everyone!) Looking forward, I’m just as excited about the future of the magazine as I was two years ago—perhaps even more so as I’ve since been able to be a bit more social and meet so many of you. The magazine recently hosted an informal advisory board meeting, bringing together various members of the community to discuss all of the important things happening in the area, and I want to thank you all for taking the time to be there with associate publisher Tanya Lorigan and me. (Special thanks to our account executive Kathy Breen for planning such a fantastic event, and to the Elliott Museum for hosting.) All of your thoughts and ideas are incredibly appreciated, and I hope you will continue to reach out to me about anything you’d like to put on our radar. I hope to meet more of y’all soon. Until then, enjoy the issue and happy summer! Peace and blessings,

Publisher’s note

I

look forward to summer every year—things tend to slow down a bit, especially my calendar, as there are not as many events to attend as there are during season. It’s a time to reset, organize, and read all those books that have piled up, as well as start planning for next season. What are you up to this summer? My husband and I have several trips planned, including two weddings in July. Many of our friends’ children are grown and starting their own lives, and I look forward to celebrating those special moments. Our two kids will join us to visit family and friends at the end of August, but we’ll also be home quite a bit. I’m also excited to go on a few staycations and to visit our local museums and conservation areas. Switching gears, I’d like to share some details about an event Stuart Magazine hosted in late May at the Elliott Museum. We organized an advisory board, bringing together several local community leaders to discuss important issues in town and to meet the magazine’s editor in chief, Michelle Lee Ribeiro. We plan to host more of these forums in the near future, with different community members, and we look forward to meeting you all and learning about what’s going on in your worlds. A special thank you to the Elliott Museum and its team for hosting this special day and providing a wonderful lunch. The catering was delicious, and meaningful partnerships were formed. For those of you who attended and read this, thank you again for your time and contributions. I’d like to wish our business owners and readers a lovely summer, and I hope you enjoy our July/August issue. Next month’s issue will feature our editorial team’s inaugural Ones to Watch list, plus it will also include a special advertising section for weddings and party planning. Please contact me if you have any questions about advertising in a special section or elsewhere in the magazine or on the website. Speaking of stuartmagazine.com, make sure you sign up for our weekly Insider’s Guide newsletter to keep up with everything that’s happening around town. Thank you for your readership and for supporting Stuart Magazine. I hope to see you around town. Have a great summer!

hat started as a seed planted by Cristina Pardo in 1997 has grown into a flourishing family business in Palm City. Blooming Freedom, a wholesale delivery plant service and 5-acre garden center, marks its twenty-fifth anniversary this year and has been passed down to the next generation. Pardo’s daughter, Linda Gallucci, and Gallucci’s husband, Nick, now lead the business and have recently completed a rebrand with the help of the family team (which includes Pardo and her mother, husband, and niece). An oasis for wholesalers and retail customers alike, Blooming Freedom specializes in orchids, bromeliads, and succulents and offers wholesale plants via a boutique truck that travels to florists throughout South Florida. “Clients say it’s an experience,” says Gallucci. “It’s not just a truck with trays of plants everywhere. Everything is

aesthetically organized by color and size.” Last fall, the Galluccis launched an on-site community market with local vendors, which they plan to host on a regular basis, setting the foundation for Blooming Freedom’s future. “I want to expand it into a mini venue,” says Gallucci. “We’ll be a place where people come not only to find plants they love, but also to host micro weddings, baby showers, and other events.” bloomingfreedom.com —Holly Martinez JU LY/AU GU ST 2 0 2 2 | STUART

ater-skiers looking for a change of scenery should check out the Hobe Lake Ski Club. The private, members-only club in Hobe Sound offers open, crowd-free waterways perfect for cruising. “It’s waterskiing the way it should be—on a pristine site with great coaching and boat

driving and the best equipment available,” says owner Ed Hickey. The club is located on a private lake and offers world-class, individual lessons from 12-time Belgium national champion Wim DeCree and U.S. national champion Megan Lambert. “The best thing about our site is there are no other boats on the lake,” says Lambert. “Plus, the lake is one of the best settings in the world, with palm trees all around. It’s paradise.” The lessons range from beginner to advanced, for all ages and abilities. If you’re new to the sport, Hickey says this is a great place to give it a go. “We have almost 100 percent success with getting all of our beginner skiers up on the skis during their first lesson,” he says. “Come here and give it a try.” hobelakeskiclub.com —H.M.

lace of Hope, a Palm Beach Gardens– based nonprofit that offers housing and support services to children, youth, and families in need, is expanding its reach in the Treasure Coast community. The organization has acquired an 11-acre property on Stuart’s Cove Road, previously owned by the Samaritan Center for Young Boys & Families. In phases, Place of Hope intends to build a community center on the grounds, using it as an outreach program for

local families who provide foster care to children. There are also plans to build a family-style foster care neighborhood on the property, as well as a transitional-living community to serve former foster youth, homeless families, and young adults experiencing homelessness. “It’s a solid home base for us on the Treasure Coast,” says Charles Bender, Place of Hope founding CEO. “We’re committed to providing more resources to the community.” placeofhope.com —H.M.

ven though the heat is a year-round thing here in Florida, we’re now in the height of summer. Preparing for sweltering temps means you’ll need a hot new swimsuit, a comfy beach towel, and a way to tote that chilled rosé! Let’s start with sunscreen. I love this ISDIN powder version. Toss it in your bag and you can be confident that you’ll be protected all day long. Bonus: It also works wonders for oil blotting. Remember your favorite jelly shoes as a kid? Relive those memories with an updated take. These chunky rubber Prada sandals are perfect for summer. One of my other favorite trends from the runway is large, chunky earrings. I love these pavé hoops by The M Jewelers. I’m also a big fan of these white leather earrings from the hottest brand around, Bottega Veneta. Pair them with this asymmetrical color-block Beach Riot swimsuit—a total stunner. Beach towels don’t get any more chic than this pink gem by LoveShackFancy, and this lip float from Funboy will make lounging in the pool both relaxing and fun! Of course, a summer day is nothing without rosé—sip it poolside in style in this very cool tumbler from S’well. Enjoy these special moments of summer! xoxo, Emily

A Life’s Purpose DOLPHIN RESEARCHER NICOLE MADER HAS DEDICATED HER LIFE TO MONITORING AND PROTECTING THE PRECIOUS SEA LIFE IN OUR LOCAL WATERWAYS H O L LY M A R T I N E Z

River Lagoon, studying water conditions and how they affect the dolphin population. It’s important work to be sure, as many local dolphins suffer from issues including seriously compromised immune systems, skin disorders (like lobomycosis), and a high mortality rate for newborn calves. And all of that, she says, is a direct result of environmental pollution in the waterways caused by things like discharge from Lake Okeechobee, fertilizer and Nicole Mader photographs the local dolphin population from her 17-foot Mako boat.

18

stormwater runoff, and plastic trash. “The dolphins don’t leave the Indian River Lagoon,” explains Mader. “They travel 50 miles or so up and down, but they don’t go into the ocean. They stay here. So whatever we do to our waterways, we do to the dolphins. They’re our neighbors, and we need to treat them as such.” Born and raised in Martin County, Mader has been interested in aquatic wildlife since she was a child, attending Jensen Beach’s Environmental Studies Center and spending time on the water with her father, a boat builder. After graduating from the University of Florida, she started her career working as a dolphin trainer in the Keys, where she was eager to work with marine life—if still a bit green. “When I was in the Keys, people there were protesting the collection of wild dolphins for captivity,” she recalls. “At the time, I didn’t fully understand it, but now I’m on the other side doing research and am very against any type of captivity. It’s amazing how far I’ve come.” After migrating back up north in 1991, she volunteered with the Jupiter-based Wild Dolphin Project, studying Atlantic spotted dolphins in the Bahamas and working closely with other organizations as well throughout the years. Now she has returned to her home turf of Martin County. “It was a full-circle moment coming back here and focusing on the

Atlantic bottlenose dolphin population in the southern Indian River Lagoon,” says Mader. “What’s going on with Lake Okeechobee, the discharge, and how it has polluted our waterways, I really wanted to document that over time because the best way to study any population is over the long term.” Mader’s research involves collecting data to monitor the local dolphin population. By photographing their dorsal fins (each dorsal fin is as different as a human fingerprint), she can track them over the years. Her collection of data helps to understand abundance, birth and death rates, home ranges, behaviors, and more. At every dolphin sighting, she checks the water’s salinity, temperature, and turbidity every half hour. She also has a strong passion for educating others on what she has learned about the harm being done to marine life and how locals can make small changes that add up to a big impact. “Dolphins are intelligent beings, and they live in harmony with their environment without destroying it,” she says. “I really want to bring to light what people do to our waterways, like throwing trash away inappropriately. We’ve had many dolphins wash up on the beach that have been stranded or killed by ingesting plastics or getting entangled in monofilament.” Mader is heavily involved with the

community’s waterways in other ways as well, including as a board member of the Environmental Studies Center and the Rivers Coalition. For the past 11 years, she has led River Kidz, a Stuart-based nonprofit that teaches children the importance of advocating for clean waterways. She also serves on the board of Massachusettsbased Ocean Alliance. “I’m proud that I have stayed consistent with my deep concern for our local environment and waterways,” says Mader. “I try to spread the word with the kids and by being on various boards…. I have such love for my town. Every little bit counts. If you do the right thing, it draws people to do the same.” ❖

3 Ways to Get Involved Mader offers advice to those who are interested in advocating for local marine life

• Contact local, state, and federal legislators to advocate for laws and policies that protect marine life and wildlife and keep waterways clean. To locate your local representatives, visit house.gov.

• Attend monthly Rivers Coalition meetings at Stuart City Hall; the next meeting is July 28. (riverscoalition.org)

• Support local organizations like the Florida Oceanographic Society (floridaocean.org) and the Environmental Studies Center (martinschools.org/o/esc) by volunteering your time or donating what you can financially.

For Sunspots It’s all fun in the sun until those dark spots show up. Reduce the appearance of surface skin damage with just the right facial. Pure Bliss Day Spa in Jupiter offers the HydraFacial, a gentle treatment that targets dead skin cells. The skin is exfoliated, extracted, then treated with an antioxidant-rich serum packed with peptides and hydrating hyaluronic acid. You can also add boosters tailored to after-sun therapy, including Britenol (with alpha-arbutin and bearberry extract to brighten and balance) and potent vitamin C (to minimize dark spots). purebliss-dayspa.com For Dry Skin An afternoon at the pool or beach is no doubt relaxing, but all that chlorine and salt water can spell trouble for your skin’s moisture levels, leaving it tight and flaky. It may sound counterintuitive, but a good salt scrub can help bring things back to normal. The Botanical Crush Scrub at Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa in Jensen Beach is infused with mineral-rich salt to exfoliate dry, dead skin, plus aromatherapy oils for a total sensory experience. After the scrub, an organic moisturizing oil is applied to replenish hydration. hutchinsonshores.com/spa-menu

For Summer Hair Woes Sun exposure, frequent hair washing and hat-wearing, and sunscreen application can put the hair and scalp through the wringer. That’s why it’s important to give your noggin some extra love during the summer months. Fusion Salon & Spa in Port St. Lucie offers a Scalp Benefit Facial to remedy things like flakiness, irritation, and more. The gentle but invigorating scalp exfoliation reduces flaking by 41 percent, relieves irritation, eliminates excess oil caused by sweating, and slays sunscreen buildup near the hairline. And all that extra attention means shinier, healthier hair. fusionwest.net/hair

try a body wrap like the Tahitian Noni Wrap at Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa. The noni fruit is lauded for its positive effects on joint health and immunity, as well as its antioxidant properties. The treatment harnesses these antiinflammatory benefits to alleviate soreness and soothe overexposed, sun-damaged skin via a cocoon-style wrap for optimal absorption. Take things a step further with a redness-reducing silver ion face mask plus a warm coconut milk scalp and body application. jupiterbeachresort.com/spa ❖

For Activity-Induced Aches After a day in the hot sun spent surfing, wakeboarding, or biking, a full-body treatment is in order. To calm overheated skin, throbbing joints, and sore muscles,

or a young family building a life together in Jupiter, the ocean certainly plays a role in leisure activities. For Will and Alyssa Claunch and their young children, 2-year-old Walker and 1-year-old Reagan, a lifetime of adventure lies ahead on their newly acquired SeaVee 322z center console. The Claunches have a solid background in boating, and both say it was an important aspect of their upbringing. For Will, a native of Palm City, fishing on his family’s bay boat provided a solid boating base and, more importantly, a love of fishing.

Alyssa takes sailing seriously, and growing up in Mystic, Connecticut offered her opportunities to sail the northeastern Atlantic. The couple always knew the boating life was something they wanted to share with their own kids someday. On the quest for the perfect boat—

one that would offer something to each member of the family—a few conditions would need to be met. For Will, a vessel that was well appointed for serious fishing was important, though not at the expense of his family’s comfort and safety. A large enough center console with adequate freeboard to allow the kids plenty of mobility without fear of anyone climbing out or falling overboard was paramount. A vessel large enough for blue water fishing and Bahama crossings was also a requirement—which meant they needed storage availability and would be challenged by the rising cost of fuel. They decided a boat in the 30- to 34-foot class that could be powered efficiently with just a pair of engines would be perfect. They also agreed to forego permanent forward and aft cockpit seating in favor of adding marine beanbags forward, as well as a removable cockpit bench that would allow for maximum fishing room as needed and the ability to add temporary seating as necessary for family cruising and sandbar days. After careful consideration, the layout of the SeaVee 322z

proved to be ideal for the family. The soft SeaVee ride would be comfortable for the kiddos as they discovered the ocean with their parents. The meticulous rigging and top-quality hardware stood out. The deck space was roomy and open. Matching 16-inch Garmin MFD units with a 48-mile radar unit would be ideal for navigating to the Bahamas. A pair of aquarium live wells could handle highvolume bait while also providing entertainment for the kids. And a JL Audio sound system would be perfect for sandbar Sundays. The Promise of PORTUGAL DISCOVER A HISTORIC WINE REGION, EXPLORE CHARMING VILLAGES, AND STROLL ANCIENT CITADELS WHILE SAILING ALONG PORTUGAL’S DOURO RIVER by

deep into colorful neighborhoods, with stops at tucked-away restaurants for local fare and ever-present Port wine. Lisbon is one of Europe’s most elegant metropolises. Its inlaid stone sidewalks, hand-painted building tiles, and yellow cable cars that climb its eight steep hills create a romantic ambience rarely expressed in capital cities. The second weekend of every month—as well as the fourth weekend from May to October— artisans, cobblers, and antiques dealers ply their trades under a canopy of trees on Avenida de Liberdade, the city’s main street directly outside the Tivoli hotel. After your time in Lisbon, you’ll travel to Porto, Portugal’s second largest city and the birthplace of the country’s signature wine. This is also where you’ll officially board the ship at the dock at Vila Nova de Gaia. Here—and daily—Viking passengers must make difficult choices about tours, as each is carefully selected to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, historians, gastronomes, and curious travelers. Those who embark on the roughly 3.5-mile Porto City Hike will come across medieval streets originally settled by the Romans, stone homes and restaurants built in the seventeenth century, and the Church of Saint Francis with its magnificently gilded interiors. History, food, and Port dominate this Douro Valley sojourn, the only region in the world in which Port wine is made. Apple, orange,

VIKING RIVER CRUISES

s international travel and cruising slowly re-enter the realm of normal, a wide world of river cruises awaits—and one country inviting exploration by water is Portugal. In the years before the pandemic, Viking River Cruises unveiled the Helgrim, one of its baby Longships built to traverse Portugal’s Douro River and navigate its five narrow locks within a 10-day River of Gold itinerary. These 262-foot ships are more intimate than Viking’s famed Longships, with 53 staterooms that accommodate just 106 guests. The rooftop pool is a highlight, as is the Aquavit Terrace on the ship’s bow that makes for a convivial alfresco gathering place. A 36-person crew creates a luxury experience with attentive service, informative guides, and enhanced amenities. Viking’s promise to be “the thinking person’s cruise” is in full effect on its River of Gold vacation, which starts with two full days in Lisbon. Guests will see the Tower of Belém and enjoy guided tours of the Jerónimos Monastery and the Maritime Museum, where Portugal’s powerful trade history is brought to life with original Indian spices, maps, navigation tools, sunken treasure, and intricately carved royal ships. Walking tours also venture

almond, and olive groves decorate the hillsides, and the scent of vineyards and Port cellars permeates the air. Grape harvests run from September 15 to October 15, when travelers can visit grand estates and participate in picking, stomping, and fermenting. Outside of the harvest season, Viking guests can instead head to a nineteenth-century estate to partake in a private Port-blending class. Warning: Math is involved. A local sommelier sets up a tabletop lab within the family villa, where you will create a 750-milliliter bottle of Tawny Port by blending just the right amount of 5-, 10-, and 20-year Ports. As you mix, a memorable science project unfolds, with the serenade of a fountain, the aromas of bougainvillea, and the backdrop of gardens, vineyards, and stone steps setting a fairy tale scene. Cultural immersion is at the forefront of any Viking river cruise, and one of the most extraordinary tours offered to passengers is in Favaios. An excursion to this tiny village is available on the Pinhão leg of the cruise and includes a breadmaking demonstration, with bakers making their loaves The Jerónimos in ovens heated with wood and grapeMonastery in Lisbon vines. You’ll also visit the Bread and Wine Museum and have lunch at the Quinta da Avessada wine estate. If it sounds like you’re on the move with this trip, you are. Although nearly every guest room has a balcony from which to watch Portugal’s rolling hills, verdant vineyards, and grand estates glide by, only one day is reserved for scenic river cruising. The country’s law dictates that no ships can ply the Douro at night, thus the Helgrim and others dock every evening in another sleepy town. Late-dusk strolls through quiet hamlets lead to sunset views, hauntingly beautiful abandoned train stations, and unexpected invitations from locals hollering from tiny bodegas.

Back on board, regional tasting menus accompany classic culinary offerings. Diners can expect dishes such as a traditional Portuguese seafood stew known as cataplana, the famed jamón Ibérico, and desserts like pastel de nata, an egg custard tart. Service is on par with any Michelin-star restaurant, and open seating allows guests to change up dinner partners. Nightly sommelier recommendations include a revolving selection of the region’s best wines—with Port flowing freely and crew, guests, and local performers engaging in the evening’s entertainment. While the pandemic has made traveling abroad and by boat somewhat unpredictable, Viking River Cruises has taken precautions to help ensure the safety and health of its passengers and crew, including COVID vaccination requirements, noninvasive saliva PCR tests, new air purification technology, and complimentary PCR testing before outbound flights, if needed. Before your cruise, visit Viking’s website for the most up-to-date protocols. Travel has undeniably changed, but small-ship cruising within a bubble of luxury and safety checks grants more personalization and bigger adventures. And this is one trip to put on your bucket list for sure. vikingrivercruises.com ❖

breathtaking blast: FREE DIVING Learning to hold your breath is the cornerstone of free diving, where you dive sans equipment like a snorkel or scuba gear. In the short film Rebirth, French free diving champion Guillaume Néry reflects on the positive benefits of breath-holding. “When we stop breathing, whether it’s for 10 seconds or 7 minutes, we stop thinking and get in harmony with ourselves,” he says. “It’s a feeling of rebirth.” At Florida Freedivers in North Palm Beach, first-level students learn to suspend their breathing safely and correctly. “We have a technique designed to lower your heart rate, saturate your bloodstream with oxygen, and remove CO2,” says training director Matt Pasa. “We usually get a two- to three-minute breath hold from people just starting out.” Once students have mastered skills like kicking in a pool, they practice diving with a rope in open water approximately two miles from shore. There are many free diving sites around Palm Beach and Martin counties—including Fort Pierce Inlet State Park, where many species of oceanic fish gather to spawn, and Cato’s Bridge in Tequesta, an area that attracts vibrant sea life ranging from arrow crabs to giant French angelfish. flfreedivers.com

team play: DRAGON BOAT RACING Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, the adrenaline-fueled sport of dragon boat racing is carried out in large, ceremonial canoes carrying a steersperson and 20 oarsmen paddling in sync with a drum. The team that completes the distance in the shortest time takes bragging rights. Will Murphy, who captains the Blazing Paddles (pictured here), a coed team with bases in Tequesta and Hollywood, says the sport is very accessible because races are typically held in sheltered water and cover

Prior experience is not necessary to join the team. “Most of our teammates came to us with no paddling background,” says Murphy. “Motivation and being coachable are what’s important.” Training sessions are held at several locations across South Florida, including Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation in Jupiter on Sundays. Following an orientation, new members learn commands and paddling techniques on land before participating in boat drills along the Loxahatchee River. paddlebp.org

explorer’s delight: CAVE DIVING The ultimate thrill seeker’s sport, cave diving provides passage to some of the most inaccessible sites on Earth—and Florida ranks high on a short list of cave diving havens. Nestled along the Santa Fe River about two hours north of Orlando, Ginnie Springs has been dubbed the world’s top freshwater dive. The site’s Devil’s Spring System comprises three springs including Devil Spring, with 30,000-feet of complex passages. About an hour south of there is the state’s largest freshwater cavern, the Blue Grotto in Williston. A guided rope system leads divers to a 50-foot demarcation; more advanced divers can go to depths of 100 feet. Make a pit stop at the air bell, a submerged chamber with compressed air that allows divers to talk or take a breather—and be sure to wave hello to the grotto’s resident turtle, Virgil. Also in Williston is Devil’s Den, an ancient spring that dates back to 75,000 B.C., where remains of prehistoric man and extinct animals have been discovered. In Volusia County, Blue Spring State Park features a maze of cave passages stretching beneath a first-magnitude spring and manatee refuge. And Peacock Springs in Live Oaks is ideal for divers with stamina; it boasts one of the longest underwater cave systems in the country and nearly 33,000 feet of surveyed passages sheltering American eel and other aquatic life. Keep in mind that cave diving can be dangerous and requires certification to go beyond designated novice areas. ginniespringsoutdoors.com; divebluegrotto.com; devilsden.com; floridastateparks.org

high-flying fun: KITESURFING Harnessing the wind with a large, steerable kite connected to your waist while your feet are strapped to a board is the art of kitesurfing (or kiteboarding). winging it: WING FOILING Avid winger Gwen Le Tutour and champion kitesurfer Damien LeRoy are the duo behind a mega-popular YouTube channel that offers educational videos on wing foiling and other water sports. Currently, youtube.com/ damienleroyyoutube boasts more than 21,000 subscribers. “It’s probably the biggest YouTube channel in the wing foiling industry,” says Le Tutour (pictured here). “When we started, winging was exploding, and a lot of people were trying to learn the sport. But because it was so new, there weren’t many resources.” The Jensen Beach resident has even passed on his passion to his sister-in-law Kelly Adams, owner of Bunkhouse Coffee Bar in Jensen Beach. A combination of prone foiling and windsurfing, wing foiling (or “winging”) uses a handheld, inflatable wing to create enough momentum to push a foil board with a separate wing beneath it. Once it reaches a certain number of knots, the foil’s wing elevates the board above the water. Compared to some water sports, winging is relatively simple to become proficient at and mixes in a low-impact workout that strengthens your buns and back. Another advantage is you can sail in light winds and when waves are soft. Le Tutour says Jupiter’s beaches are great for

winging, but warns: “It’s the ocean, so you’re going to get some waves.” He suggests Stuart Causeway Park for beginners as the water is calmer. Jupiter Kiteboarding and Next Level Watersports offer winging lessons in Jupiter and Stuart, which include equipment, incidentals, and boat and Jet Ski support. jupiterkiteboarding.com; nextlevelwatersports.com

nighttime encounters: BLACKWATER DRIFT DIVING Ever wonder what creatures swim up from the ocean floor at night to feed? You’ll certainly find out on a blackwater drift dive! Lucky for you, the Gulf Stream, a northward-pushing current running 40 to 50 miles wide off the coast of South Florida, is home to some of the best blackwater diving in the world. Pura Vida Divers in Singer Island offers this unique experience, which is essentially scuba diving at night in epipelagic environments. In the company of a divemaster, participants

sticks attached to the floating apparatus cut through the darkness and attract all forms of curious and rarely seen aquatic life including octopus larvae, fluorescent eels, and squid (pictured at right). Back on the boat, divers can share their experiences and identify the spectacular underwater wildlife they witnessed in a “creature ID book.” Because of the dive’s complexity, PADI Advanced Open Water or Night Diver certification is required. puravidadivers.com

pet appeal: SUP WITH YOUR PUP From crushing calories to diminishing stress, stand-up paddleboarding provides a low-impact workout with body and brain-nourishing benefits. SUPing is even more fun when Fido is planted at your feet—like Hobe Sound resident Kim Shae Barnes and her dog Ella, pictured here on the Indian River near Sewall’s Point. Rent a board and paddle around on your own or sign up for lessons with a seasoned pro. Salty Dog Paddle, a volunteer-staffed surf and SUP nonprofit that aids injured dogs and marine life, offers board rentals and private eco-excursions around Jupiter Island. Certified instructors with canine-handling training conduct lessons that launch from Coral Cove and the Harbourside Place Marina. Before entering the water, all dogs receive balance training and are fitted with canine life jackets with coiled leashes attached to the paddleboard. Samantha Dishman, Salty Dog Paddle’s national development director, recommends renting a paddleboard before the lesson and having your pup practice sitting and lying on it at home to get used to the board. Salty Dog also offers kayaking lessons with your furry friend and rents doggy surfboards too.

or those who delight in the unexpected, everyday life can sometimes underwhelm with the number of true surprises it delivers. That is why one Stuart groom decided to take the reins in the wedding planning and gift his fiancée a day filled with unexpected surprises. Creating and delivering “wow” moments might seem daunting to many, but for Joseph Napoli, it is truly old hat. While many people in the community know Napoli as the owner and face of the tenured Joseph’s Jewelry store in Stuart, they may not be aware that he spent much of the ’80s showcasing his skills as a professional magician at local venues like The Breakers. Now he planned to infuse that magical, awe-inspiring spirit into the celebration of his nuptials. “Since I used to be a performer, I’m always about the wow factor,” he says. Napoli first met his new bride, Palm City native Lisa Bebout, a decade ago when she came into his store to help a friend pick out an engagement ring. The two kept in touch on social media and eventually started dating. When Napoli decided to propose in the fall of 2020,

he resurrected his magician’s prowess. He created the illusion of a table levitating in the air; on top of the floating table was a jewelry box that held a halo engagement ring with a center diamond encircled by smaller diamonds. The box was wrapped in a jewelryrepair envelope for work he had done for Bebout before they started dating. Something had told him to keep the envelope, and on this day, it added to the romantic atmosphere. While they share a business mindset and a dedication to community involvement, Napoli is the more rightbrained creative of the two. Bebout, a wealth strategist at Key Private Bank, describes herself as more organized and efficient. The counterbalance in the relationship works and is also what led to Napoli’s decision to take the lead in their wedding planning. The couple, who reside in Hobe Sound, visited The Mansion at Tuckahoe in Jensen Beach and fell in love with it. Then Napoli got to work. He enlisted the services of event planner Cindy Morley of Eventful Moments and her team of VIP vendors to create a wedding that would be beyond anything Bebout would be expecting. The bride welcomed Napoli’s decision to take the lead in planning. “I’m used to being the one who makes all the decisions and runs so many things that it was nice to step back and trust him that it was all going to work out,” she says. “He wanted to create a fairy-tale

day for me, and that just speaks volumes as to the kind of man he is and how much he cares.” Napoli kept the details secret for as long as possible to build anticipation. “When we arrived on the morning of the wedding, I covered her eyes and brought her upstairs,” he says. “I wanted her to be blown away when she came downstairs.” Napoli’s key to a successful evening was to break down the venue into multiple experiences that would be revealed as the night progressed. The ceremony itself was held upstairs and limited to the closest people in the couple’s lives, including their children from previous marriages. Bebout debuted a stunning sweetheart lace-embellished mermaid Pronovias gown paired with a 10-carat diamond necklace and chandelier earrings borrowed from Joseph’s Jewelry and a 3.5-carat

yellow diamond ring worn on her right hand (a wedding gift from Napoli). After the ceremony, the newly married couple joined 130 guests for a cocktail hour in the Mansion’s center room to begin the celebratory portion of the evening. Napoli requested that the window-covered back wall of the room be masked with drapery to prevent guests from sneaking a peek at what would come next. As the cocktail hour ended, the back doors opened to reveal the next destination—a tent adorned with chandeliers, pleated liners, and rose-hued up-lighting that would serve as an enchanting milieu for the reception. Napoli knew that floral decor was particularly important to Bebout, as her family owned a chrysanthemum farm in Palm City in the 1970s. He chose hydrangeas, her favorite flower, to create elegant towering arrangements on a center table below a gorgeous chandelier. Beautiful white-on-white

arrangements, some adorned with fairy lights, were also spread throughout the space. In addition, he had the florist, South Forty Floral & Events, create a silk arrangement of the same floral combination to rest on the sweetheart table that the couple could take home as a memory of their special night. “The best part of the night was seeing Lisa’s face when she walked into the tent,” recalls Napoli. The food offered up its own theatrical moment in the form of a flaming pasta station where ignited vodka was added to a hollowedout wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano and then mixed with penne and sauce for a deliciously exciting dish. With food plentiful, drinks flowing, and the DJ cranking out songs

destined to get people on their feet, the atmosphere was buzzy and enjoyment was high. As the evening wound to a close, the DJ asked guests to clear the tent, and the newlyweds were left alone for one final dance, to Elton John’s “Your Song,” before heading to their departure. As guests held sparklers and lined the pathway to the couple’s ride, Napoli gave his bride one more surprise: Fireworks exploded against the night sky, a fitting end to a celebration that had already delivered its fair share of extravagance and excitement. As they prepare to start the next chapter of their lives together, Bebout says seeing the thoughtfulness that Napoli put into their wedding day fills her with joy and excitement for their future. “Getting married the second time, and at our age, it was more about what we wanted our day to be rather than meeting everyone else’s expectations,” she says. “It was so nice that I could just enjoy my day. Joe really knows what I like and was able to translate his vision into what he knew would be an amazing experience full of surprises for me.” And given Napoli’s nature, those surprises are sure to continue for years to come. ❖

pursuit.

From their first day at Benjamin, students learn to find deep gratification through the pursuit of knowledge, but even more rewarding is the feeling of putting their intelligence, strengths, and skills to work in real ways, to achieve real results. They learn that focus, determination, perseverance, and a positive attitude make up the foundation that their personal history of success will be built on.
